Government says communities have a big role to play in the rehabilitation of released inmates.

This follows the release of more than 4 000 inmates under the Presidential Clemency.

Speaking to ZBC News, the Permanent Secretary the Ministry of Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Mrs Virginia Mabhiza said communities need to help government in the rehabilitation process of released inmates, adding that their release under the presidential pardon was important in light of the threats of COVID-19.

“We encourage communities to embrace the recently released inmates and help them in recovery and rehabilitation. They are human beings and let’s work with them. Most of them have reformed and let’s not discriminate on them,” she said.
The sanctity of human life is confirmed by the Constitution of Zimbabwe and the release of the inmates is testimony of government’s commitment to constitutional provisions.
