By A Correspondent| Prophet Walter Magaya’s bid to secure the top position at the Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) appears to be in jeopardy after his alleged attempt to manipulate the election process was exposed.
Magaya, alongside former ZIFA vice president Gift Banda, reportedly held a secret meeting with ZIFA councillors from the Southern Region on October 10, 2024, at a private residence in Bulawayo. During the meeting, the duo allegedly campaigned for amendments to the ZIFA constitution, specifically to remove the requirement of five O-levels—a qualification Magaya reportedly lacks—aiming to clear the path for Magaya to contest for the presidency and Banda for the vice presidency.
Sources close to the incident revealed that Magaya and Banda urged the councillors to amend the constitution, eliminating clauses that could hinder their bids for the top roles in the ZIFA elections scheduled for January 2025. However, the exposure of the secretive meeting has now cast doubt on Magaya’s ambitions, as the revelations have raised concerns about underhanded tactics and manipulation.
The meeting was attended by prominent figures within Zimbabwean football, including provincial and regional chairpersons, as well as aspiring ZIFA board members. The fallout from these revelations could derail Magaya’s plans, with potential backlash from both the football community and the public.
