Mai Charamba Blows Open On 8-Year Hiatus

Fans have been clamouring for a new record from Olivia Charamba, popularly known as Mai Charamba, for so long that even a new riff will send them in a frenzy.

The multi-award winning Zimbabwean gospel artiste has been working on new material recently, and said she hoped to have it out by midyear, leading to hope that we may finally hear something.

But there was something else preventing her from fully focusing on her new material that she has not spoken about until now.

While she admits that her personal life has made it difficult to concentrate on the album process in a similar fashion to previous efforts, she revealed to the Daily News on Sunday that the main problem is that she is a stickler for perfection.

Mai Charamba, who rose to prominence as a solo artist with her 2000 debut album, Amen, last released an album in 2009. Her last album was The Gospel.

She says she does music as a passion and calling, not as competition.

“Ever since I started recording as a solo artist, I have never been in a rush to release new albums because I usually want to take my time.

“I believe my music is timeless and is always appealing, thanks to my husband who God has vastly blessed with a gift that contributes to this.

“My motherhood and music career started off at the same time and this also set the pace for my releases,” she said.

Having last released an album eight years ago, Mai Charamba has taken all the time she needs.

“I will release my next project in two to three months’ time,” she said.

She said that her band has finished the hard part which is the song writing process and are now working on piecing the songs together before forwarding to their front man producer, who will then work his magic.

“My husband features on the backing vocals and since I have been quiet for some time, I do not think I should engage anyone on a collaborative note for now. It’s not necessary,” she said.

As a backing vocalist, she has performed with her husband, Charles, from his debut album Tinashe Akatendeka in 1997.

“On the albums I have recorded, I was very consistent but never had stipulated times for releases since inception.

“I don’t really regret the hiatus but I think it is an injustice to my followers and so I’m taking a corrective measure, that is, to release more frequently.

“Me being a top artiste or not, I don’t sing for the purpose of contesting with anyone,” she said.

Olivia Charamba (nee Maseko) was born on August 14 in 1973. She started singing in the Salvation Army choir in the 80’s.

In 1995, she moved to join the Apostolic Faith Mission and that is where she met her husband and started her professional career.

She has also been a pastor since 2004 when she graduated at Living Waters Bible College.

“We do counselling and offer consultancy to up-coming musicians. I also enjoy doing a bit of tailoring, gardening, a bit of farming and other activities. I also do spend a lot of time with my family.

“It’s all about scheduling but I usually prioritise my family whenever there is a clash of events.

“My eldest child is now 18-years-old and starting university soon. She is very musical and very passionate about it and we are very supportive.”

She also revealed to the Daily News on Sunday her other source of income besides music.

“I thank God music has remunerated me very well but I don’t sorely survive on it. I have other investments that are capable of sustaining me.”

She is also a farmer, a road safety ambassador for the Zimbabwe Traffic Safety Council.

On musicians she admires, she said: “I have been impressed by a number of them though I can’t mention names. I’m inspired by most of them because of their resilience and consistency in the music industry,” she said.

Mai Charamba blasted music piracy — the copying and distribution of music for which the composer, recording artist, or copyright-holding record company did not give consent.

“I don’t have anything to regret, if I had my own way, I would eradicate piracy for the benefit of most upcoming artistes because most of them are not well r-sourced,” she said.

Zimbabwe does not have a dedicated anti-piracy organisation, following the closure of the Anti-Piracy Organisation of Zimbabwe (Apoz).

Besides a thriving black market for music, proprietors of shops, factories, office, surgery, bottle stores, nightclubs, hair salons, gymnasium, discotheque, play pirated music in public without a copyright license, blatantly infringing copyright laws.

Copyright legislation in Zimbabwe is divided between the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Regulations (2006) and the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights Act (2000), which prescribes that any person found guilty of infringing the provisions of the copyright law is punishable by imprisonment for a period of two years or a fine. – Daily News

MAWARIRE PRISON: Missing the Point at Your Own Peril

By Brighton Chireka  I have been following the debates about Pastor Mawarire and the fact that he has been put in Chikurubi Maximum prison. This is a man that spoke about non violence and he came back on his own and did not resist being arrested and whilst he was away there was no arrest warrant that was put in place .

He left as free person and came back as a free person but now he is in prison – maximum prison for that matter .

The debate should be about him being guilty or not . Speculating about his desires is non of our business . We all have our secrets desires and ambitions so before we accuse others of ambitions let us face the facts first . Pastor Mawarire is a Citizen of Zimbabwe so he is free to go out and come back into the country freely without any fear like everyone.

Pastor Evan Mawarire is innocent and must not be in prison . I am not partisan . If ZANU PF does something good I will be the first to congratulate them and likewise if they messy up then we should raise the issue with them.

We must not have anymore innocent people rotting in our prisons . We had that during the Rhodesian era and sadly we are having it now in a free Zimbabwe !

Christian Crusader Alleged To Have Killed Zim Boy Faces The Music

John Smyth’s pastor has advised him to fly to the UK to face the consequences for allegedly beating 22 teenagers at Christian holiday camps.

And the lawyer’s pastor son‚ PJ Smyth‚ said: “These are horrific allegations‚ and if proven true it is right that my father face justice.”

In a statement on Sunday to the Cape Town congregation Smyth has been part of for two years‚ church elders said the former Justice Alliance of South Africa leader should also “admit‚ if necessary‚ to any accusation that holds substance and apologise‚ asking for forgiveness and mercy”.

The Wynberg church has asked Smyth‚ 75‚ and his wife‚ Anne‚ to stay away from its services and meetings until the allegations of “terrible misconduct” against the former part-time judge are resolved.

A TV documentary last week reported that Smyth left the UK for Zimbabwe in 1984 after a hushed-up report by a church charity said he administered savage beatings on boys who attended camps at Winchester College‚ Hampshire.

He arrived in South Africa in 2001 after the dropping of a culpable homicide charge linked to the drowning of a 16-year-old at a Zambesi Holidays camp for Christian teenagers.

Church-on-Main pastor Andrew Thomson told worshippers on Sunday that a “fair number of people … have had moments of counselling and group discipleship with John”.

Elders were available “should anyone feel the need to discuss the nature of‚ or content of‚ their experience. Similarly‚ if you think there is someone you would like to prompt us to follow up with‚ please do so.”

He added: “If our having had John as a leader of a discipleship group or his role in any form of ministry has led to hurt or risk to anyone‚ or to bringing the glorious gospel of Jesus Christ into disrepute in any way‚ for this we apologise”.

The church’s three Cape Town congregations have been invited to a members-only meeting on Wednesday to discuss the Smyths. Elders have offered counselling to the couple‚ who have left their Bergvliet home and failed to respond to numerous requests for comment.

PJ Smyth‚ in a letter to the congregation of Covenant Life Church in Maryland‚ US‚ said his father “disciplined me in a manner consistent with the laws and cultural trends of the UK at the time‚ not in a manner alleged in the recent reports”.

“During the time we lived in the UK‚ I was in boarding school from the age of 8 to 13. When I was home I never saw or heard anything that led me to suspect my father was engaged in the activities alleged‚” said PJ‚ who has just left Johannesburg after 10 years at the helm of several GodFirst churches.

“We moved to Zimbabwe when I was 13. My father told me that he felt called out of the legal profession into full-time Christian work. I attended a number of Zambesi Holidays camps and I was never aware of any abuse.

“During the early 1990s‚ when I was studying in South Africa‚ I was aware that a delegation of pastors and parents insisted that my father and the board of Zambesi Holidays make adjustments to camp life‚ which they did. I do clearly remember the tragic drowning of a fellow camper one year. It was devastating to his family and to all of us who knew him.

“In my twenties‚ I gradually became aware that there had been issues surrounding my father’s ministry in the UK. Nothing specific‚ but I remember hearing some of my parents’ friends say things like‚ ‘… of course those were difficult years for your dad’. However‚ I assumed that it was something relatively minor and it never occurred to me to press my father for detail.

“I believe that the civil authorities are given by God to help protect against wrong-doing. I am firmly committed to reporting any form of child abuse to the authorities.”

A Prophet Is Not Without Honour Save In His Own country

Rufaro Mufundirwa | Many a times, people begin to realise the importance of something after they have lost it, the same scenario that also happens in human relations.

One needs to attend a funeral to understand this. Mourners would be showering praises to the deceased. One person that some Zimbabweans will certainly treasure his existence, belatedly though is Cde Robert Mugabe. Zimbabwe will never be the same after God has allowed him to rest. However, there are a few who are conscious of this reality. Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa is one of the few Zimbabweans who know that the nation is abundantly blessed to have the calibre of President Mugabe amongst them. He revealed his consciousness of the centrality of President Mugabe in August 2015, in an interview with Baffour Ankomah, the Editor at Large of the London-based New African Magazine.

“I don’t think the next generation will be able to produce a person like him (President Mugabe). I don’t think we can get a person even in our generation who can fill his shoes to the extent that he has been able to remain an intellectual giant in leading our people and charting a course for the African people of this region, perhaps even continentally…Within the current African leadership, I don’t see many who can fill the shoes of the founding fathers. The only one I know without thinking much is President Mugabe. It will take a long time for this country to produce a man of his calibre, if at all we can….We will miss him dearly,” said VP Mnangagwa.

That was a candid assessment of President Mugabe by his deputy. Despite being one of the probable heirs to President Mugabe, VP Mnangagwa found himself among the myriad that cannot squarely fit in President Mugabe’s shoes. That on itself is a rare attribute of a leader. Indeed Zimbabwe will dearly miss the African iconic revolutionary leader.

However, they are not all Zimbabweans who know the blessings that Zimbabwe has in President Mugabe. Some even wish him dead. President Mugabe’s existence on this planet is treasured more beyond the frontiers. There are citizens of other countries who wish if he could be their President. Even Julius Malema himself who recently called President Mugabe to step down, once proposed that the United States of Africa must have the Zimbabwean leader as its president. This was, of course before he was corrupted by a few US dollars that he is taking delivery to assist the West in their regime change project.

One day Jesus told the people of Nazareth a statement that can be applied in Zimbabwe today. “A prophet is not without honour save in his own country,” reads the divine statement which was recorded in the books of Luke 4:24, Mathew13:57 and Mark 6:4. Truly, President Mugabe is not without honour save in his own country.

During the recent AU’s 28th Ordinary Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the bloc’s new chairman Alpha Conde could not hide his over-the-top adulation of President Mugabe. He extolled President Mugabe whom he said was a symbol of Pan-Africanism. “We want to thank President Mugabe who is the source of our pride despite what the western world thinks,” said Mr Conde, who is also the President of Guinea, to thousands of delegates at the close of the summit.

Mr Conde knows for sure that the continent benefits a lot from President Mugabe, one of the few surviving founding fathers of Africa. AU was founded by the likes of Kwameh Nkrumah of Ghana, Julius Nyerere of Tanzania, Modibo Keita of Mali, Gamal Abdul Nasser of Egypt, Sekou Toure of Guinea, Ben Bella of Algeria, Haile Selasse of Ethiopia and Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya among others. The bloc was formed to promote the unity and solidarity of African States; coordinate and intensify their cooperation and efforts to achieve a better life for the peoples of Africa.

It was also formed to safeguard the sovereignty and territorial integrity of member states and rid the continent of colonialism and apartheid. It is these objectives that President Mugabe, as a founding father, had reservations on the re-admission of Morocco in the bloc. Morocco invaded the Saharawi Arab Democratic Republic upon its independence from Spain. AU would do well if it gives an ear to the people who comprehensively know the founding principles of the union. It’s unfortunate that the new crop of leaders in Africa is not as principled as the founding fathers, who must be turning in their graves to see their predecessors putting monetary benefit above ideology.

“Tsvangirai Gunshots At Joshua Nkomo,” MDC Leader Probe Could Open

Shylene Mtandwa| Dirty things are now coming out about Gukurahundi and Morgan Tsvangirai must respond on the CIO statements which say he was part of the gun attacks on former Vice President Joshua Nkomo, Professor Jonathan Moyo says.

Tsvangirai is alleged to have participated in the Gukurahundi massacre during the time he was a ZANU PF commissar in the early 1980s.

Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko says Tsvangirai is a bad element in Matebeleland due to his shady involvement in the atrocities, an allegation the MDC leader has vehemently rubbished.

Writing in on Sunday morning ZANU PF’s Secretary for Science and Education Professor Jonathan Moyo said an official investigation should be convened to investigate Tsvangirai following Mphoko’s statements.

“This disclosure on Mr Tsvangirai’s Gukurahundi CV is new & very serious. It must be investigated!,” said Prof Moyo.

Mr Tsvangirai was ZANU PF’s political commissar during the Gukurahundi massacre.

Tsvangirai Was ZANU PF Commissar During Gukurahundi | SHOCK DETAILS

Ray Nkosi |MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai was ZANU PF’s district political commissar during the Gukurahundi massacre, shock details reveal.

The MDC leader has admitted being Robert Mugabe’s top aide in the Mash Central province during the time 22,000 Ndebeles were being killed.

Tsvangirai first made the admissions during his 2004 treason trial in which he swore he would never seek to end Mugabe’s life.

“I regarded Mr Mugabe as my hero and the hero of the liberation struggle,” Tsvangirai said in response to a question by his lead defence counsel, renowned South African human rights lawyer Mr George Bizos. CLICK HERE TO READ THE ORIGINAL ARTICLE.

Asked if he ever plotted to kill Mr Mugabe or overthrow his government, the 51-year-old former trade unionist replied: “No, my Lord.” Mr Tsvangirai – who said he was a district political commissar in the ruling ZANU-PF party in the 1980s – told how he fell out with Mr Mugabe over policies restricting trade union activities and the government’s handling of the economy.

VID Testing For All Cars

Parliament has recommended to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development that all cars must be inspected yearly at a cost of $50 per unit, as part of the commercialisation of the Vehicle Inspectorate Department meant to raise $126 million annually.

At the moment, inspection for fitness is limited to public service vehicles at a cost of $25 and $20 for heavy and light vehicles respectively, in line with Statutory Instrument 134 of 1998. Private cars are only inspected at VID when they are involved in accidents or when there is suspicion that they have defects.

Although such executive decisions are normally taken by the responsible ministry, parliament through its Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development has recommended the idea. The parliament used its oversight function, which according to the Standing Order of Parliament Category (c) states that the committee shall; “monitor, investigate, inquire into and make recommendations relating to any aspect of the legislative programme, budget, policy or any other matter it may consider relevant to the Government department falling within the category of affairs assigned to it, and may for that purpose consult and liaise with such department.”

In an interview, the chairman of the committee, Cde Dexter Nduna (Zanu-PF, Chegutu West) said this was a gap where Government can raise money.

“As a committee we are proposing that VID must inspect all motor vehicles in Zimbabwe, be they black on yellow plates or red on white plates which are private and public service vehicles. There are approximately 1,5 million vehicles that are on our roads and they have not been inspected, in fact a good number of them have not been inspected with a view of reducing road carnage,” he said.

Cde Nduna said Statutory Instrument 34 of 1998 allows the Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development to inspect public service vehicles while another statutory instrument can be put in place that there be a provision to inspect all vehicles to see their road worthiness. He said hence VID could charge as much as $50 for vehicle inspection on all cars.

“If the VID is commercialised, there is going to be $50 levied for all annual inspections for private vehicles, and with the vehicle population in Zimbabwe VID can easily raise revenue to the tune $126 million. It can use $40 million for recapitalisation and declare $60 million to the Government,” he said.

Cde Nduna said the money will add onto the $5 million the department was raising through Learners’ Licence Tests, $6 million from Drivers’ Licence Tests and $25 million from public service vehicle inspections. The move will raise the revenue by 600 percent to $126 million.

However, in an interview, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Dr Joram Gumbo said the idea was noble although his Ministry was still to deliberate on the issue.

“I have not received any communication yet but maybe the move is a noble one if done correctly and through the right channels. It should come to Government formerly and be discussed,” he said.

The committee also suggested that there should be computerisation and integration of the transport management systems linking driving schools, VID, Zinara, Zimra, Central Vehicle Registry, Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe and Zimbabwe Republic Police.

“In Government we have moved to have an electronic system whereby VID, Zinara, CVR and Zimra will come as one and officials can be able to check the status of a vehicle at one go, one can check if a vehicle is registered, free of debts with Zinara and even the police can see if there are any offences,” said Cde Gumbo.

Merging of Zinara and VID will see the two organisations leveraging on synergies with quick wins in activities such as enforcement of laws regarding overloading, unlicensed vehicles and drivers, fuel levy, unroadworthy vehicles and garage inspections, to name a few.

Nonetheless, if the proposals see the light of the day, there will be an increase in the number of fees motorists have to pay. At present motorists pay Zinara Vehicle Licensing fees of between $20 and $300 per quarter depending on the weight of the vehicle. To pay for the licensing fees, motorists also need to pay insurance with the cheapest pegged at $36 per quarter. In adddition, they pay the same parastatal between $2 and $10 for tollgates when using the country’s major highways depending on the weight of the vehicle. Motorists also pay a minimum of three cents per litre of fuel they buy levied as Carbon Tax.

Those with car radios are supposed to pay an additional minimum of $10 for radio licence to ZBC per quarter.

Motorists are also mandated to buy triangles, reflectors and fire extinguishers.

There are also plans to introduce tollgates in urban areas to raise money for road repairs and construction. – State Media

Mugabe’s ‘Twin’ Speaks Out

I was born in Chitendero Village, Kutama on May 8, 1924. This is the place where Robert Mugabe was also born.

I am related to him in that his father, Gabriel, was my cousin and referred to me as mukoma while I called Robert my son.

A sense of pride wells up in me each time I consider that I am one of President Mugabe’s remaining peers. You can search through Kutama in its entirety, but will not find another 93-year-old like me.

To the best of my knowledge, President Mugabe and I are the only nonagenarians left out of the lot born here.

I am told that I did not cry when I was born, and the resident Catholic priest baptised me on that day fearing that this was an indication that I would not live long.

But here I am — 93 and still going strong!

I grew up at Kutama Mission. In the early days, we were not allowed to interact with non-Catholics as the priest at that time, Father Loubiere, was intolerant and did not have cordial relations with the community.

He would not even allow us to interact with my grandparents because they were not Christians.

Robert’s father, Gabriel, worked at the mission as a carpenter alongside my uncle, Mr Paul Gono, and this drew Robert and I closer in those early days.

We spent a lot of time together, eventually becoming best friends; more like twins. We often ate from the same plate.

Robert was very intelligent, so was his brother Michael.

Father Jerome O’hea, Father Loubiere’s successor at the mission, greatly influenced our upbringing, making sure we followed Catholic traditions and never missed church services.

He was a man of many talents: a doctor, builder and an engineer.

He managed to spread the faith, and worked well with people of different faiths as well as other Christian churches like the Methodist.

We learnt a lot from this priest whom the people loved and was far much better than his predecessor. Father O’hea was a role model whom we adored as children. He was a larger than life figure and influenced Robert Mugabe in a very big way.

The way President Mugabe conducts himself shows that he has stuck to principles we took from Father O’hea who always emphasised doing what is right.

Robert and I also shared lighter moments with Father O’hea. I remember how we would sometimes hide from him or roll over weaved mats to dodge chores.

Never quite a drinker

Following Catholic indoctrination, many people felt encouraged to move from Kutama Mission to other areas to spread the Gospel. Gabriel moved to the Karigamombe area, while Robert remained behind in Kutama with his grandparents, Sekuru and Ambuya Shonhiwa.

Sekuru Shonhiwa was known as “Chigubhu” because of his love for traditional brew.

He had an adept way of imbibing the brew, enabling him to keep it for longer while the containers of his drinking partners’ had long run dry.

Despite this exposure, Robert never took to the bottle, but, instead, took many positives from his grandparents. He was, in a way, his grandparents’ keeper, and had many responsibilities at that young age.

The two of us were separated when he started school.

I was only able to start school when I was 15-years-old, leaving Kutama for Chishawasha. At the time, Robert was in Standard 5.

We used to interact often whenever I went back to Kutama during school holidays. He never forgot our special relationship and bought me a suit when he started working.

This was one of the special gifts I held dear because it was a sign of his great affection for me.

Our lives later took different turns when he joined politics while I joined the Rhodesia Civil Service as an extension officer.

I worked in Mutoko and Murewa for many years, and thus could not see him. All I could do was support what he was doing to liberate the country.

I was not surprised that he became a nationalist leader because he had shown signs of greatness during our formative years. He was disciplined, despite being exposed to alcohol.

He sticks to principle, having blended his grandparents’ and Father O’hea’s teachings.

Father O’hea taught us to love one another. One sees that in the President because he loves his family greatly.

Many people wonder how he has managed to live this long; I believe everyone is responsible for their decisions in life. He has never imbibed alcohol, even during our youth when our peers were drinking themselves senseless.

If he had, or had not followed the right path, he would not have achieved what he has. Above all, it is God who has given Robert and I long life.

As his “twin’’, I understand President Mugabe and his vision for Zimbabwe. He saw and experienced colonial brutality and does not want it repeated. He has carried self-discipline, wisdom and principle since our days together at Kutama.

It was when he fell in love with his books and kept on the right path that his greatness began.

Cde Johannes Chikanya shared these views with The Sunday Mail’s Chief Reporter Kuda Bwititi in Zvimba on January 30, 2017. – State Media

Barrow Nullifies Jammeh’s Working Hours Decree

The Gambia’s new president has scrapped the four-day week introduced by his predecessor Yahya Jammeh.

In a statement Adama Barrow said that public sector employees would now have to work a half-day on Fridays too.

Four years ago, Jammeh had said the country’s mainly Muslim population should use Fridays to pray, socialise and tend to fields.

However, under the new rules, the working week is actually officially shorter by three-and-a-half hours.

Official working hours are now 08:00 to 16:00 from Monday to Thursday and 08:00 to 12:30 on Friday – making 36-and-a-half hours a week.

Previously public sector employees were meant to work 40 hours a week, from 08:00 to 18:00, Monday to Thursday.

BBC Africa’s Umaru Fofana says the four-day week had its critics, but under the former government, publicly expressing criticism of official policy could lead to severe punishment.

“Now we have rejoined the civilised world,” Allieu Ceesay, a trader in Serekunda, The Gambia’s largest town, told our correspondent by phone.

The new directive comes less than two weeks since Jammeh went into exile in Equatorial Guinea – and within a week of President Barrow’s return from Senegal to assume power.

Jammeh had initially accepted defeat in elections in December, but then tried to have the results annulled.

Barrow went to Senegal for his safety as the regional bloc Ecowas intervened to end the crisis.

Regional troops were deployed to The Gambia when Jammeh’s term of office officially ended last month and his exit was negotiated by West African leaders. – NewsofAfrica

Tsvangirai Responds to Mphoko

Below was MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s response to claims by Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko that Tsvangirai was involved in the horrific Gukurahundi massacres of 1982-84.

Mphoko makes a fool of himself on national television

Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko yesterday embarrassed himself on national television when he alleged, with a straight face, that popular political leader Morgan Tsvangirai was once involved in an assassination attempt on national icon Joshua Nkomo and was also behind the Gukurahundi atrocities committed in the Tsholotsho area in Matabeleland North province in the early 1980s.

Here was a whole Vice President, with neither shame nor compunction, grossly maligning and besmirching an innocent citizen and making a sick joke out of a national tragedy on national television.

Zimbabweans in general and the people from Matabeleland and the Midlands provinces in particular, know that it was the Zanu PF government with Robert Mugabe at the helm that butchered and maimed innocent citizens in those provinces in a genocide that Mugabe himself has since admitted to, albeit dismissing it as having merely been “a moment of madness.”

Apparently appearing to be high on some illicit and noxious substance during prime time viewing last night, Mphoko shocked the nation with his unfounded and baseless allegations against the hugely popular MDC leader, allegations for which he will certainly have his day in court.

Next time, Mphoko’s minders must assist him to resist the temptation to parade himself in front of television cameras, particularly if he knows he has just smoked something illegal, toxic and dangerous as he appeared to have done yesterday. He may indulge in anything he fancies, but he must never make himself a national spectacle, humiliating both party and government by smearing an innocent citizen with blood in a desperate bid to make a murderer out of them. It was a cheap script that only an illicit drug addict could have the courage to muster and parrot on national television.

The people of Matabeleland openly told President Tsvangirai during his tour of the region last week that it was Mugabe and his Zanu PF government that had engaged in the senseless massacre of innocent Zimbabweans in a crime against humanity that Mphoko now sought to blame on Tsvangirai.

Mphoko’s charade in front of television cameras was a miserable, freshman’s attempt at spin by a semi-literate G40 kingpin who was clearly out of his depth.

He could have done better if he had sought the advice of some of his colleagues in the same faction who lost their parents during the senseless Gukurahundi period. At least they could have sat him down to impress upon him that this was no laughing matter; that Gukurahundi was too grave a matter to clown about.

It is now a matter of public record, as alleged by genuine war veterans, that Mphoko was flirting with and abusing under-age girls in Maputo both before and soon after independence and may have lost out on what actually happened in the country during that sombre political moment.

However, his absence from the country during this period gives him no licence to soil and humiliate himself by defaming Tsvangirai, whose only crime is that he has sought to engage the communities ravaged by Gukurahundi with the sole aim of hearing them out on what could be done by a new government to put closure to this sad and painful chapter of our national story.

Mphoko will soon be hearing from President Tsvangirai’s lawyers about his false and defamatory allegations. He surely owes the nation an elaborate substantiation of his fanciful allegations that do not befit the high office that he holds.

He will surely have his day in court.

Indeed, judging by his latest performance, what appeared all along to be a bastardized rendition of his name may be the apt version of what he truly is, after all!

Tsvangirai Wanted to Assassinate Joshua Nkomo: CIO Claims

The CIO agent and Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko says MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai was an intelligence agent who attempted to assassinate former Vice President Joshua Nkomo.

attacking…Phelekezela Mphoko

He also says the MDC leader was involved in the burning and killings in Tsholotsho.

Addressing the media in Bulawayo following a closed door meeting with the Zanu PF provincial leadership, Mphoko said Tsvangirai who has been touring Matabeleland Province canvassing for support and using the disturbances that took place in the 80s as a trump card is not the right person to handle the issue given his involvement in it.

Mphoko said Tsvangirai’s promise to the people of Matabeleland that he will solve the Gukurahundi issue is false as he was heavily involved in the disturbances that occurred in the region, the state broadcaster ZBC reports.

Mphoko said Tsvangirai was first involved in an assassination attempt on the late Father Zimbabwe Dr Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo in Masvingo before his involvement in the burning and killings in Tsholotsho.

Mphoko however did not reveal further details of the alleged assassination plot.

Mphoko appealed to the people of Bulawayo to remain resolute behind Zanu PF and not to be misled by Mr Tsvangirai into believing he could serve the interests of the people of Matabeleland.

Tsvangirai has labelled the claims nonsensical and embarrassing, CLICK HERE TO READ HIS RESPONSE.

He said the Zanu PF government is working on addressing the issues affecting the people and called on the people to be patient as government solves the challenges.

MUGABE OUT: Evan Mawarire’s Second Act

Simon Allison | I spent most of Thursday wandering in circles around the Harare Magistrates’ Court, aptly-named Rotten Row, waiting for police to bring Evan Mawarire to court. He never came.

After arresting him at the airport on his return to Zimbabwe on Wednesday, the police are taking full advantage of the 48 hours they can legally detain him without charge.

In July last year, I spent another Thursday doing much the same thing. But that day was very different. For one thing, Mawarire actually arrived, and was eventually acquitted, on a technicality, of all the charges against him. For another, I was surrounded by thousands of ordinary Zimbabweans who had come to show their solidarity with the inspirational, subversive pastor. More than anything else, it was their presence — a popular protest unprecedented in Zimbabwe’s recent history — that forced the government to let him go. It was that, or a riot.
Six months later, Mawarire’s citizen army were not out in force. There were a handful of close friends and associates present on Thursday, but nothing like the massive outpouring of support that shook the Zimbabwean regime so badly in July. After lunch, even the riot police gave up, concluding that their presence was no longer required.

There are some obvious, practical reasons for this. Mawarire himself opted for a low-key arrival, saying he did not want a “hero’s welcome”. Security precautions meant that very few people knew of his plans to return, which in turn means that no one has been organising and planning for the likelihood of his arrest. And security around the court itself has been tightened, with new fencing making it harder to get in and out.

But there is also a deeper malaise. Speaking to activists and civil society leaders, it is clear that Mawarire’s star has fallen dramatically in the six months that he has been away — and no one is quite sure what to do with him now that he is back.

This is, partly, a natural reaction: last year, from nowhere, Mawarire suddenly became the focus of national and international attention, eclipsing veteran activists who have fought longer and sacrificed more than he has. “There’s a lot of jealousy in these circles,” one activist confided in me.

There is also a legitimate fear that Mawarire is a destabilising influence; that his presence, and the possibility of him running for public office, could derail the delicate coalition negotiations that are currently happening between the major opposition parties. Because his return to Zimbabwe was shrouded in such secrecy, no one really knows what he intends to do, or how it will affect them. He is a wild card.

Mostly, however, the resentment towards Mawarire stems from a sense of bitter disappointment at his decision to leave Zimbabwe just days after his release from prison in July. Few of his supporters saw this coming, and many felt betrayed and angry, because in leaving, Mawarire immediately squandered the considerable political momentum that had been built up around him.
There is a sense — perhaps over-optimistic — that if he had stayed, the country would now be considerably closer to the kind of change that Mawarire preaches.

It didn’t help that while Mawarire and his family were safely in the United States, the regime intensified its crackdown on all forms of opposition, with record levels of assault, abduction and torture reported. While Mawarire was being feted in America, and showered with accolades, his comrades at home were suffering.

These criticisms are understandable, even if not always justified. After all, Mawarire had every reason to fear for his life, and in public statements has scrupulously declined to take individual credit for the movement that his #ThisFlag videos kick-started.

Despite the tensions, Mawarire remains a popular, influential figure, and he has plenty of people fighting on his behalf in the courts, in the backrooms of power, and on social media. But it is clear that his first objective on home soil — even while in detention — must be to win back the full support of Zimbabwe’s tightly-knit activist and opposition community.

It shouldn’t be hard. In returning to Zimbabwe, fully cognisant of the risks entailed, Mawarire has surely proved his commitment to the cause — and his willingness to sacrifice for it. And from a pragmatic perspective, the opposition movement needs him, even if he remains politically naive. With the exception of veteran leader Morgan Tsvangirai, there are few politicians or activists in Zimbabwe who can match his combination of name recognition and charisma.

In leaving Zimbabwe, Mawarire may have taken the wind out of the sails of the burgeoning resistance movement. But his return, and his immediate arrest, offers a chance to regain some of that lost momentum, building on the extraordinary commitment displayed by Mawarire’s comrades in his absence. With elections coming up in 2018, it is a chance that surely must be taken.

Jah Prayzah Caught In Andy Muridzo, Bev Sex Storm

Andy Muridzo’s decision to join Military Touch Movement (MTM), the music stable owned by Jah Prayzah, may have done him more harm than good.

Producer Tapiwa “Maselo” Jera is withholding nine tracks that Muridzo wanted to constitute the bulk of an album due for release on March 22.

It has also been claimed that Muridzo’s affair with raunchy dancer, Beverly Sibanda, did not end last year but was terminated the moment the singer signed for Jah Prayzah.

Sources close to both parties say for some reason, Bev was irked by Muridzo’s move and when she confronted her lover about it, he was rude and told her never to contact him again.

The situation with Maselo and Bev is said to be just the tip of the iceberg, as Muridzo’s heavyweight financial backers and diehard fans, who oiled the singer’s rise, are reportedly abandoning him in the wake of his decision to “sleep with the enemy”.

As the story of Muridzo joining MTM gets weirder every day, with a number of conspiracy theories being thrown around, we spoke to some of the parties involved.

Maselo — who produced Muridzo’s second album that carried runaway hits “Dherira” and “Chidhafudhunda” — confirmed he was withholding the songs he did with Muridzo until they resolved their issues.

“We were like partners (and) he just left. I have to know what exactly is going on,” disclosed Maselo.

The producer revealed the two had a heated telephone exchange last Tuesday over the music, which resulted in Muridzo telling Maselo to delete the files because he would start the album afresh.

Said Maselo: “At first he said to me let us go and finish the music at JP Studios. I told him that would not be possible since I have my own brand to grow. After his deal with MTM, stories started coming out and he approached me again, demanding the music.

“I then told him the terms of the new deal now that he was a signed artiste elsewhere seeking to work with another producer. He dismissed the terms, dropped the phone call and said to me ‘delete the music, we will start afresh’,” said Maselo.

Maselo said the new terms involved specific payments for each track they recorded together, but he would not divulge exactly how much he demanded from the artiste.

He said Muridzo came back to the negotiating table and by the time of going to print the two were still deadlocked with Maselo saying, “We still have not agreed on the way forward.”

The 25-year-old producer also gave a bit of background.

“When I started working with Andy, my wife also worked for him as a backing vocalist. We did the previous album based on friendship bordering on brotherhood. There were no contracts, I considered his music mine and he considered my studio his,” narrated Maselo.

“He is the only artiste who did not pay the stipulated amounts for recording a song or an album. He could do whatever he wanted in the studio and I gave him most of my time. So now that his brand and music are owned elsewhere, and it will not be benefiting me directly, there is no way we can continue to do each other favours.

“I had hoped that the more hits we produced, the bigger both our brands would grow, but I was obviously mistaken.”

Maselo spoke of “tell-tale signs” that Muridzo would dump him, he chose to ignore them as he thought success would bring them closer.

“When we finished ‘Ngarizhambe’ I could tell all was not well. He could not acknowledge me as his producer, even at the launch. Surrounded by all those people I just thought he would say ‘this is the man I worked with, my producer’. But no.

“Afterwards I played his lead guitar for a while in the band but after some ill-treatment from him, I quit. The way we parted ways was unhealthy but he still came back, apologised and said let’s do another album. We worked on this unreleased album last year from August to November — it is very good.”

Maselo’s studio, Maselo Pro, has artistes such as Progress Chipfumo, Baba Harare, Dino Mudondo, Jairos Chabvonga, Wanai and Bontoman.

Maselo continued: “When we started working together we would hire other producers’ studios. I would then take the files home and work on my laptop; that is how we produced all those hit songs.

“But now we had proper studio equipment, a comfortable place that was ours and all the time we needed to work on the music. I know for a fact that among the songs we did there are three or four hits. This was it, but if he is willing to let them gather dust in my studio, then so be it.”

Muridzo’s manager Gift Petro said there was a standoff with the producer, and accused Maselo of shifting goal posts when they joined Jah Prayzah’s label. He, however, expressed confidence that everything would be sorted out and when fans saw what the vision was, things would calm down.

Petro dismissed the notion that the Military Touch deal was doing them more harm than good, but admitted that a significant amount of control was now under MTM as they “own the vision”.

MTM wields so much power that Muridzo’s manager does not even know when his artiste’s album will be launched.

Said Petro: “The dates are subject to change. If MTM has a function that clashes with ours we might have to move the dates. Remember, MTM is now spearheading the release of this project, so their full force has to be felt.

“Take for example a woman who is single, works and lives a comfortable life. When that woman gets married you do not expect the standards to go down but actually go up. That is what is happening with Andy Muridzo, Jeetaz Band and MTM: our lives, our act and lifestyle can only get better now.”

Although he refused to show this publication a copy of the contract Muridzo signed with MTM, Petro gave more insight into the deal.

“We will record our music there. The stable will also distribute and market our music, and organise the majority of our high profile gigs, if not all. From all these things, the stable will get a certain percentage from the earnings,” said Petro.

He said MTM would organise gigs for any of their artistes, even without Jah Prayzah on the line-up, and still get a share of the gate takings. On the signing on fee, Petro said: “That is still being discussed.”

Responding to Bev’s claims that Muridzo impregnated her, Petro said the dancer needed help.

“She and others who do not understand why we have done this, thus they are doing everything they can to kill this relationship. (Prophet Walter) Magaya chaiye akamutadza Bev uya, munhu anotoda rubatsiro (even Prophet Magaya failed to deal with her, she needs help). All this is because people are fighting this deal,” he said.

Petro said even if Bev was pregnant, the way she was handling the matter was wrong. Bev’s manager Hapers Mapimhidze accused Jah Prayzah’s team of creating unnecessary troubles for Muridzo.

“Andy’s problems started when he joined MTM, but only because he was forced to destroy relationships, even professional ones, by his new handlers.

“As for their tiff (Bev and Andy), it was actually someone who claimed to be Andy’s lawyer who told Bev never to contact his client again when Bev tried to communicate with Andy as they normally do,” said Mapimhidze.

He added: “Right now as we speak our joint shows have all been cancelled. We were supposed to be having a show with Andy in Mutare on the 18th of this month but I have just been informed by the promoter that Andy’s managers have pulled the plug.

“Andy or the promoter are no longer in control of the band — Jah Prayzah’s team is now in charge of everything including monitoring who Andy cavorts with.” – State Media

Tsvangirai Draws The Line

Former Prime Minister Morgan Tsvangirai has reacted strongly to his deputy Thokozani Khupe’s public opposition to coalition negotiations between the MDC-T and other opposition parties, saying he will not allow his lieutenants to divide Zimbabwe on tribal lines.

Khupe last week told journalists that the MDC-T did not need an alliance with other opposition parties in Matabeleland because the party always performed well in the region.

The former deputy prime minister was reacting to revelations by ex-vice-president Joice Mujuru that her Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) was making steady progress in negotiations to form an electoral pact with MDC-T.

Tsvangirai, who has been on a countrywide tour to gauge support for the coalition in his party, told The Standard in an exclusive interview yesterday that Zimbaweans desperately wanted the opposition to close ranks and challenge President Robert Mugabe.

He said he might have to override those with dissenting voices in his party for the sake of the alliance in a pointed attack on Khupe.

The MDC-T leader said he had been given the mandate by his party to oversee negotiations and would do all he could to see to it that there was a united front to face Zanu PF next year.

In the interview with our chief reporter Everson Mushava (EM) Tsvangirai (MT) also spoke about his health and Mugabe’s refusal to retire.

EM: You have been in coalition negotiations with Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) leader Joice Mujuru for some time now. are you at liberty to disclose the status of your negotiations?

MT: No. It is too early, but I can tell you that it is a process that has been fully endorsed by my party and I have been given the sole mandate to ensure that an alliance for the opposition succeeds; I can tell you that it will succeed.

I am not at liberty to reveal [details] because we have made a commitment that we will not negotiate in the media.

Much as we would like the media to cover these stories, I always think it is something instructive that you do not negotiate in the media.

EM: There has been suspicion that disputes over who should lead the coalition will be the biggest threat to the prospects of forming an alliance. What could be your comment to that?

MT: I do not think leadership of the alliance is an issue that can stop the alliance. Remember, I outlined that we need an alliance agreement, we need a policy agreement and we need a post-election agreement.

So those agreements are very important because during the course of that, you will be able to ascertain who should lead this process for the success of the alliance.

Otherwise, if you just become dogmatic and bury your head in the sand for the sake of leading an alliance, it is not going to be helpful.

We want an alliance that will succeed. we do not want an alliance for the sake of an alliance.

We want an alliance that will address the apathy in the country, especially among the young voters and to ensure that the possibility of victory is assured before we even go into that election. That is going to be a game-changer.

EM: In your negotiations, you seem close to Mujuru and her ZimPF than any other opposition party, what could be the reason?

MT: I think it is a practical assessment of the asymmetrical distribution of potential votes. It is a yardstick. you remember that ZimPF has no Member of Parliament, but we believe they have a sizeable potential vote base and the political credibility and credentials that will add value to the alliance.

However, I have not excluded any political party from the discussions and I can tell you that we have discussed with Welshman Ncube, Jacob Ngaribvume and others.

All these political parties exist but we need to evaluate the potential of each political party and the value they are likely to add to the alliance. It is a very critical assessment that needs to be done.

EM: Other political parties have accused you and Mujuru of snubbing them in coalition negotiations. They accuse you of being complacent and that you see yourselves as the only parties that matter, can you respond to the allegations?

MT: First of all, we are not arrogant, otherwise why should we be talking to all these parties? We see the need for an alliance, the only problem is that some people feel that in an alliance-building process, we should be equal.

How do you say you are equal when you are not equal? It is a realistic assessment, but what I want to tell you is that we respect every party and we respect every leader.

The coalition is not about individuals, but it is about what the people on the ground have been crying for. I see that there are people who would like to put positions in the media, like we will not do this and that, now that is not the way to negotiate.

You negotiate on the basis of your strength, you negotiate on the basis of what you will bring to the alliance. It is a practical reality and it is not arrogance.

EM: Do you think opposition parties will form a coalition against Mugabe before the 2018 harmonised elections?

MT: The prospects are there and I must say, let us make a distinction between an alliance before the election and a post-election coalition because those two are different.

We believe that we can build a pre-election pact of individual parties working together to have one presidential candidate, one parliamentary candidate. in other words, the selection agreement we are going to craft out must not allow for divisions and splitting of votes.

If party “A” is stronger in an area, we must all support [that candidate]. That is the way to approach it, rather than have a self-serving exercise just because you are a party and therefore you are entitled to so many seats.

That will be counterproductive and problematic in the negotiations.

EM: Some observers say even a coalition cannot break Mugabe’s hegemony if the electoral playing field is not levelled. do you think so?

MT: I agree with that. The National Election Reform Agenda (Nera) was a good platform to campaign for conditions before positions, that is why we are clear that there are some minimum conditions, like a voters’ roll which is credible, questions of voter registration, the biometric voters’ roll, the avoidance of voter suppression through traditional leaders and food — all those things are very important if we are going to have a level playing field.

EM: You appointed two more vice-presidents last year after you disclosed your health status. Most people immediately thought the appointments were an admission that you have lost the battle against cancer? Would you mind disclosing your current health status?

MT: Contrary to the speculation at that time, you can see for yourself I am just as healthy as you are. I have just come from an assessment in South Africa. The scan showed positive results.

The doctor was very happy about the progress I am making and I thank God that I have gone through this process at a time other people were sentencing me to death. Premature determination!

I want to assure Zimbabweans that I am very well and on a speedy recovery and the doctor is very happy with the progress.

EM: There have been allegations of factionalism in your party. Some have gone to the extent of alleging that your party is divided along Zanu PF lines. Your comment on that.

MT: Well, if there is factionalism, what is it based on? It should be based on something and as far as I am concerned, there is no factionalism in MDC based on Zanu PF influence.

If there are individuals who want to be involved in Zanu PF factions, it is very unfortunate because as far as we are concerned, we have a very strong united position on how we are going to tackle the issues we are confronted with.

We cannot afford, as MDC, to be involved in factional divisive politics that has destroyed Zanu PF.

EM: Some people have proposed a transitional government for economic and political stability. What is your view on that?

MT: As the MDC, we are open to any solution to a political stalemate. In fact, in 2014 I called for a national dialogue because I realised where the country was going and that without national dialogue, there was no way you could pull this country through.

EM: Villagers from Matabeleland last week warned you that your lieutenants would threaten a coalition because of selfish interests that include preservation of posts? How are you going to deal with the problem?
MT: First and foremost, I want to say that the party has set out a policy and I am responsible for implementation of the policy. During my consultation, I was impressed with the input of the people.

I must say there will always be a minority with a different perspective because this is politics.
It is very unfortunate when people express their own personal views and not express the national policy position of the party.

However, as the leader of the party, I am there to ensure that my mandate to negotiate an alliance succeeds in line with the national sentiment. I cannot betray that.

I may have to override certain personal views because we have to look at the bigger picture which can bring change to the people of Zimbabwe.

There are people who are saying the MDC is seeking an alliance because it failed to dislodge Mugabe on its own. That is not true.

We have won elections before and I think an alliance may enhance our opportunity to have that transfer [of power]; not because of the vote, but because of the perception, then we do that and I want to ensure that we will make sure that alliance takes place.

EM: Some members of your party have proposed that a coalition should only be done in some regions and not others like the southern regions where the party has “scored success” since the 2000 elections, what do you say about that?
MT: I am not going to balkanise the country. During my trip to Matabeleland, I emphasised the fact that we want to build a society which takes into consideration that they have multi-ethnic and multicultural diversity so that people feel they are part of the same country without marginalisation.

I feel that the people of Matabeleland want to be part of Zimbabwe as well, so there is no way we can balkanise people and say these ones are like this and those ones are like that.

The issue of alliance building has nothing to do with regions and regional consideration. it is a national project. we will have balkanised the nation to the point where we talk of ethnic affiliation and that is an antithesis of the policy of the MDC.

One thing that struck me when I was in Matabeleland was the desire for the country to put a closure to these divisions.

They want to put a closure to Gukurahundi and all the other atrocities that may have taken place and they are the victims but they are the first ones to say we need a closure on this.

This is what has to happen and I agree with them, and I think the politics of ethnicity, while it will always characterise our politics because of the nationalists, I think we should move away from the politics of ethnicity and move to the politics of meritocracy with anyone in this country, saying I am a Zimbabwean and I want to contest for the presidency of the country and so on.

We are not going to approach the alliance discussions from an ethnic point, we are going to define it from a national perspective

EM: Considering that there is that minority in your party which has its own views on the proposed coalition that do not agree with your own views, don’t you think they will put spanners in the works?  How are you going to handle them?

MT: We always have spanners in the works in the political discourse of this country, but the fundamental issue is being able to achieve the goal of the liberation of this country.

I am informed by national interests, not personal interests. The broader objective of ensuring that we are able to deliver the people from the current system is what is going to occupy me when I meet other leaders.  I will say; how do you make sure that we achieve the bigger picture, not just the narrow personal interests?

EM: Of interest is that the people suggest positions contrary to yours are in the party’s decision-making body that mandated you to negotiate for an alliance. What do you think is the source of the contradictions?

MT: That is not the character of the MDC, the MDC always takes a policy position and I am responsible for implementing the policy position. I would urge all members of the MDC to use the organs of the party to express individual opinions because in the end when collective decisions are made, we are all bound by them despite our individual opinions.

We are all bound by what the highest organs of the party have decided but it does not mean that we suppress those individual opinions.

Of course, they should be expressed and we are very tolerant, but we would appreciate it if they used the right platforms to express their opinions.

We do not negotiate through the media and members are urged to avoid commenting on issues to do with the alliance outside our agreement.

After all, I am the chief spokesperson on the alliance building process so we want to make sure that whatever individual opinions are expressed on the right platform

EM: A lot of your party members seem uncomfortable coalescing with Mujuru’s party, claiming it is made up of people formerly from Zanu PF who once tortured them. what do you say about that?

MT: I am aware of that sentiment. I am aware when I go to some parts where violence took place during elections, but you do not negotiate with your friends. [Ian] Smith and [President Robert] Mugabe went to Lancaster, were they friends? You negotiate to end a crisis and that is my objective.

It means we have to negotiate with Mujuru’s group for the sake of putting this country forward. as I said before, you cannot build a future on past atrocities, you have to build a future by defining the parameters of where you want to take this country.

We are talking about how we can take this country forward, not backwards, otherwise if we do so, there are so many issues that are unresolved.

We will be busy discussing the past when we are supposed to define the future. Yes, I accept there will be those sentiments expressed against ZimPF for past misdeeds, but this is the time to bury that and move forward.

EM: What is your party’s position on taking part in next year’s elections in light of your boycott of polls demanding electoral reforms?

MT: First of all, let me clarify the position. we were fighting for “no reforms no elections” and I think there has been some significant movement in achieving the basics we want. Why do I say that? If you look at ZEC [the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission], there are moves to set up committees, nine of them that will look at voter registration. look at all the areas that we are concerned about so all those committees will go a long way in dealing with some of the omissions.

Secondly, I think that we will be taking some of the issues to court, like the refusal by ZBC to air opposition views and to open up the media space. We also know that Zanu PF’s character of violence may actually have an impact of suppressing voter choice but we are working on those areas, so yes, we are making progress which is not total but we think it can go a long way to mitigate some of the excesses and give us space to participate. Indeed, we are going to participate in the 2018 elections.

EM: In 2008, you claimed that you won the elections whose results were announced after more than a month. If you win in 2018, do you have mechanisms in place to protect your victory?

MT: There are lessons from the 2008 elections. You can win an election but cannot win power, so the critical thing is not just about winning an election but ensuring that we have put a mechanism that will allow smooth transfer of power.

It involves confidence-building measures that an election victory for the MDC, for those that are resisting change, must know that we have no intention of retribution or of vengeance, that we want everyone to believe that when we are in government we are setting a process of confidence for every Zimbabwean across the political divide.

It means that we are appealing; we are sending a message to those that will resist change because of past misdeeds.

This is why an alliance is very important; it will give confidence to those that are resisting change, that the future is for all of us.

Those confidence-building measures may assist us to unlock those resistances and I am engaging the war veterans and all institutions that may have been very reluctant and sceptical about an MDC government on policy direction that we are outlining.

EM: What is your message to President Mugabe today?

MT: Mugabe has to make a choice for the sake of his legacy. First, from the point that he is the founding president of independent Zimbabwe, he has to choose between being considered a hero or a villain. It is his choice. I have always said knowing him, I know he would like to have a very positive assessment of his legacy and he has to do the right thing, which I think is not to participate in the next election, open up the space, allow the Zimbabweans to make the next move of defining the future rather than being entrapped in the nationalist basket. It is time to retire.

EM: Some people have suggested that the main reason why he wants to stick around is that he is afraid of retributive action from the MDC if they win the election.

MT: I have no intention of engaging in retribution, regardless of the fact that we were victims.

Retribution creates victims, it begets violence, it creates retribution so it becomes a vicious circle.

What I can assure you is that there is no intention on our part to victimise his family or himself.

An old man of that age, I think it is unAfrican to continue pursuing that man to the grave.

My message is very simple, let go [and] don’t undermine your legacy, which we all want because we cannot rewrite history. – Standard

Sex Change For President Zuma | MALEMA BLAST

Female Zuma – graphic/caric

The EFF leader is once again pulling no punches on what he calls Zuma’s ‘desperation’ to escape accountability for alleged corruption.

If there were a possibility of President Jacob Zuma changing overnight to become a woman so that he could secure a third term, he would have already done that. That’s how desperately he wants to cling to his position, says Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) CIC Julius Malema.

Speaking to the Mail & Guardian, Malema said the president thought remaining in power was the only effective way of preventing him from facing 783 charges of corruption that have been hanging over his head for a decade.

The CIC says Zuma has not been honest about wanting a female president. In fact, his silence on the ANC presidency race is strategically meant to divide the ruling party. According to Malema, the many candidates who have been named or hinted at to be vouching for the top job are there because the president has not spoken to anyone about the actual possibility of succeeding anyone him.

By keeping quiet, he is creating confusion within the party, hoping he will be asked to remain in the top job as a unifying figure, says the CIC.

Last month, Malema tweeted: “#3rdTermLoading mmmmm my lips are sealed but don’t say I didn’t warn you South Africa…”

Malema is known for his sometimes cryptic tweets that can leave readers scratching their heads, but this tweet was a clear reference to the ANC’s elective conference set to take place at the end of 2017.

The CIC, however, is not the only one who is convinced the president wants a third term. There are memes that have been circulating on social media of the president in a photoshopped headscarf and shawl with the caption: “When they want a female president and you want a third term.”

Another one of a woman who looks like Zuma walking around at the popular Durban club Eyadini circulated on Twitter late last year, with most saying the president had been dressing up as a woman in the hopes of clinging to power. – Citizen

ZiFM Recruits Top Journalists

ZiFM Stereo, a subsidiary of AB Communications, has recruited veteran journalist Constantine Chimakure and well-known radio/TV presenter Tichafa “Tich Mataz” Matambanadzo to help steer its operations.

Chimakure, who has edited several newspaper titles during a long journalism career, has been appointed ZiFM deputy head of news and current affairs.

Other new staffers at the station are political reporter Moses Matenga, marketing officer Christine Midzi, and presenters Nonkululeko “Amard” Dube, Chidochemoyo Nhemara and Rebecca “Miss Becky” Muchenje.

In a statement last Friday, AB Communications group chief operations officer Mr Gilbert Muponda said the new recruitments were part of the company’s efforts to continuously improve and enhance its entertainment and news products.

Mr Muponda also said the company‘s regional radio stations, Hevoi FM and 98.4, would be launched soon.

He said, “We want to cascade this professionalism to the metro radio stations.

‘‘So, the arrival of Constantine and Moses will bolster the news and current affairs department at a time we are on the verge of launching new products among them a news website which will go live very soon.” – State Media

Econet Is Caught In Massive Tax Evasion Scandal?

State Media – Econet has been caught in a massive tax evasion scandal.

Telecommunications giant Econet Wireless and Zimbabwe Revenue Authority bosses allegedly connived to help the company evade taxes and externalise cash — a scandal involving $300 million.

The allegations are contained in a Zimra forensic audit report compiled by HLB Zimbabwe Chartered Accountants signed off in October 2016.

According to the report, Government could have lost about US$300 million in revenue between 2009 and 2013 after Econet allegedly imported dutiable goods without paying taxes.

To promote ICTs, Government allowed mobile network operators to import base stations duty-free. Econet allegedly took advantage of the exemption to smuggle dutiable goods which the company allegedly marked as “base stations”.

The company also allegedly externalised foreign currency by over-invoicing through its Mauritius-based sister company, Econet Capital.

Zimra board chair Mrs Willia Bonyongwe confirmed that forensic auditors had raised the red flag and investigations were underway.

She said, “Yes, there were observations to that effect and the forensic auditors recommended that we investigate the issues of over-invoicing, transfer pricing and customs duty evasion, among other things. I can assure you that the board will act on all issues raised by the forensic auditors and we actually have already started doing so.

“But some cases are more complex than others, requiring more time and more technical advice and investigations. And then the fact that Zimra officials involved are going through disciplinary hearings is another process altogether which affects the speed of implementing the audit findings.”

Mrs Bonyongwe said individuals and companies implicated in the report should “get an opportunity to clear their names to the public and to their stakeholders because the allegations are quite serious and Zimra should have followed them up conclusively”.

The report states that Econet Wireless hired clearing agent Mr Edward Matambanadzo to process its goods through his Paul Edwards Shipping Company (Private) Limited.

Auditors stumbled upon the scandal as Mr Matambanadzo battled to get Zimra to pay him for providing them with information on Econet’s alleged shenanigans.

Mr Matambadzo’s lawyers, C Nhemwa and Associates, wrote to suspended Zimra Commissioner-General Mr Geshom Pasi on February 7, 2014 raising the allegations but the matter was not pursued.

The letter reads, “Our client has instructed us to bring to your attention that in the process of carrying out its business of customs and freight forwarding, it came to discover that Econet Wireless Limited was fraudulently prejudicing the revenue authority of huge sums of money through illegal declarations and fraudulent clearances using a number of clearing agencies, including our client’s Paul Edwards Shipping Company (Private) Limited.

“On discovering this, our client approached your organisation with the relevant information and provided documentary and audio evidence which we believe has been useful in collecting revenue from Econet Wireless.

“Apart from prejudicing the revenue authorities, Econet Wireless was also illegally externalising foreign currency through over-invoicing using a sister company registered in Mauritius and this matter has been reported to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe. We are instructed to inquire from yourselves as to what amount has been recovered from Econet Wireless as our client believes the prejudice for the revenue authority is in excess of three hundred million dollars (US$300 000 000.)”

Mr Pasi is directly implicated by auditors.

“Apparently, the Commissioner-General (Mr Pasi) also acted corruptly (showing favour to a client) by not causing an investigation against Econet to be carried out,” reads part of the audit report.

Zimra, through post-clearance conducted in 2013, discovered that it could have been prejudiced of US$15 million by Econet.

On December 3, 2013, Zimra wrote to Econet saying, “A post-clearance was carried out on some Econet Wireless ‘base stations’ importations which were cleared through Harare Airfreight Zimra office and Beitbridge Boarder Post.

“The audit revealed gross anomalies in the clearance which resulted in Zimra being prejudiced of USD15 884 943,46 in Customs Duty and VAT.”

Quizzed on the alleged tax anomalies by The Sunday Mail, Econet Wireless executive assistant to the group CEO Mr Lovemore Nyatsine said Zimra had advised the company of its intention to garnish US$67,9 million, which the mobile network operator then challenged in court.

Mr Nyatsine said, “The penalty of US$47 million that Zimra had imposed was set aside by the High Court. We imported base stations in exactly the same manner that our competitors did.

“Zimra sought to charge duty against Econet alone retrospectively without charging the same duty against our competitors. We have objected to that discriminatory treatment and our case is pending in the courts.”

Auditors explained that the anomalies were a result of Econet’s misclassifying of single components/units or parts of base stations as complete base stations.

HLB Zimbabwe Chartered Accountants said evidence presented by Mr Matambanadzo suggested that Econet imported 59 582 base stations when the actual number of base stations it owned was less than 2 500.

“This points to the fact that the 57 082 which were imported by Econet were classified as base stations when they were not base stations hence the 57 082 were imported duty-free to the detriment of the fiscus,” reads part of the audit.

The auditors said the 57 082 items were imported by Paul Edwards Shipping Company.

Mr Nyatsine dismissed the allegations as false.

He said, “Whoever did the audit for Zimra would have counted each base station component as though it was a complete base station hence the ridiculous quantity of base stations we are alleged to have imported. The number of base stations we own correspond with the number of base stations we imported.”

Forensic auditors further unearthed that Econet could have externalised US$6,3 million through a scheme involving transfer pricing within one month in 2009.

The matter was reported to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe which then conducted investigations as captured in a letter written by the chief inspector of the Exchange Control Inspectorate on June 17, 2016.

In the externalisation, it is alleged that Econet would overstate the prices of components it was buying from its sister company in Mauritius, thereby allowing it to move millions of US dollars out of Zimbabwe.

The audit report shows that on October 23, 2009, Econet Wireless Zimbabwe bought a PDH Microwave from Econet Capital for US$2 398 425. Auditors said the equipment was actually valued at US$1 343 231 by ZTE, implying potential externalisation of US$1 055 194 via that transaction.

On July 27, 2009 the company bought “various items” from its sister company for US$9 153 400 when the goods were really valued at US$5 117 472 – a difference of US$4 035 928.

Auditors said, “This potentially resulted in hundreds of millions of United States dollars which could have been externalised by Econet through the modus operandi illustrated above the exact quantum of which can only be determined by carrying out a full-scale audit on imports by Econet Wireless Zimbabwe – a posit that was not taken by Zimra executives.

“Zimra could have potentially suffered financial prejudice in that by inflating the values of assets imported, the value claimed in respect special initial allowances would also be inflated thereby understating profits and the corporate tax thereon.”

Econet’s Mr Nyatsine also dismissed these allegations, saying the matter was investigated and the firm had not been censured.

But HLB Zimbabwe Chartered Accountants insisted the matters raised required thorough investigations.

Zimra did not carry out a full-scale investigation because – according to a letter by the tax collector’s director of legal and corporate services, Mrs Florence Jambwa on July 23, 2014 – the allegations were not supported by facts “and as such we were not able to take any action on them”.

Auditors discorved that Mr Pasi had ordered Ms Jambwa to write the letter, possibly to cover up the scam.

Auditors’ interviews of Zimra loss control divisional heads showed no investigations into Econet’s dealings had ever been conducted.

The auditors said the issues raised by the whistle blower issue, Mr Matambanadzo, should be fully investigated.

They also recommended that appropriate action be taken against Mr Pasi for “acting corruptly”; Ms Jambwa for signing a letter with contents which misrepresented facts; Mr Tichawona Chiradza (commissioner, investigations and international affairs) for facilitating the letter which misrepresented facts; and Mrs Anna Mutombodzi (commissioner customs and excise) for failing to take action after receiving information from the whistle blower.

Mr Pasi could not be reached for comment. – State Media

Horror As Harare Residents Drink ‘Faeces Water’

Harare water is contaminated with faeces it has emerged.

The water in Harare should not be consumed without precautions as many of the city’s sources are now contaminated due to transposition of matter by rain water, new research shows.

The research by the Environmental Management Agency in suburbs like Hopley, Budiriro and Kambuzuma, established that the capital’s borehole water had faecal matter.

It also determined that boreholes near graveyards were susceptible to contamination when decomposing corpses come into contact with groundwater.

EMA spokesperson Mr Steady Kangata told journalists last week that “no water is safe enough to use without precautions”.

He implored residents to boil all drinking water regardless of its source, adding that only certified purified water could forego boiling.

“We have surveyed places like Hopley, Budiriro and Kambuzuma and from our surveillance, we have established faecal contamination of

boreholes. Most of these water sources have sewer bases; so contamination is at the point of extraction.

“People should boil water at the point of use, especially those who buy bulk water to fill their tanks. Most people think public boreholes are the ones that are contaminated, but private ones, too, should equally be monitored so that the quality of their water is known.

“If water is not potable, then use it for other purposes like laundry or irrigation. In Hopley, for instance, one finds that some houses are close to cemeteries where a grave can be as close as five metres from homes, and all that decomposition affects water.

“We are saying people should be more cautious, and this also means stopping this habit of buying water at road intersections because no one knows where that water would have come from.”

Zimbabwe Institute of Regional and Urban Planners president Mr Phineas Dohwe weighed in, saying: “Initially, boreholes were not meant for domestic use, but for irrigation and other purposes. However, they slowly began to be widely used as a resort whenever water shortages occurred.

“The best way to go about the entire matter is to de-commission septic tanks because water is being contaminated underground. There is need for the city to put in place reticulated sewer systems. People should stop depending on borehole water for domestic use; instead, the city has to supply water.”

Zimbabwe has experienced incessant rains since December 2016, and experts contend this is largely behind transposition of contaminants to potable water sources.

Many Harare residents have over the years relied on borehole water due to a general distrust of council supplies and, in some cases, lengthy spells without running water.

A typhoid outbreak that affected 200 people in December 2016 spurred residents to better examine their water and food sources.

Laboratory tests by Zimlabs were to later confirm the existence of Escherichia coli (E. coli) bacteria in borehole water samples taken around the city.

The bacteria can cause diseases like diarrhoea.

Two weeks ago, Health and Child Care Minister Dr David Parirenyatwa revealed that most boreholes in the capital’s low-density suburbs were contaminated.

Dr Parirenyatwa said, “Some think that because they stay in low-density areas they are spared from typhoid. However, because of the rains, dirt is being washed into those boreholes. Some also think they are safe because they use borehole water, but our assessments have shown that 95 percent of all boreholes from low-density areas such as Borrowdale are also contaminated.

“What we want to ensure is that piped water is safe so that our people are also safe. We have engaged in talks with responsible authorities, and we hope tap water is safe for consumption.” – State Media

Hubby Bashes Wife For ‘Bad Sadza’

A 30-year-old Harare man was last week arrested for hurling a plate of sadza at his wife and then severely assaulting her for preparing “a seriously bad meal”.

Tashinga Jairos of Budiriro suburb appeared before Mbare magistrate Ms Kudzai Zihove, charged with physical abuse as defined by the Domestic Violence Act (Chapter 5:16).

He was, however, pardoned after his wife withdrew the case before judgment.

Prosecutor Miss Tariro Rangwani told the court that on January 2, 2017, Jairos’ wife served him a plate of sadza and relish.

She was, nevertheless, unaware of what her husband would serve up a few moments later.

Miss Rangwani said, “As he ate the food, Jairos started complaining and shouting that the meal was badly cooked. The wife then told him to talk to her politely, but Jairos became violent and threw the plate at her.

“He then assaulted her all over the body with open hands, fists and stoned her in the back as she fled. She sustained a swollen face, a cut on the left ear and bruises on her right knee as a result of the assault.”

A report was made at Budiriro Police Station, leading to Jairos’ arrest.

In defence, Jairos said, “I admit to the allegations, but I only slapped her once on the right cheek.” – State Media

New Houses For Flood Victims – Broke Govt

Thousands of Zimbabweans whose homes were destroyed or damaged by recent floods will soon get respite as Government will help them reconstruct their houses.

A special committee will assess prospective beneficiaries’ properties and then determine whether or not one qualifies for support.

It will mobilise funds towards this grand effort, which involves donor agencies and other well-wishers.

Above-normal rainfall in different parts of Zimbabwe between December 2016 and January 2017 has left many people on the brink.

Meteorologists attribute the flooding to La Nina, a weather phenomenon that spews results in heavy rains and thunderstorms. According to the Civil Protection Unit, 76 people have drowned while lightning strikes have killed 10 and injured 96 this summer season.

The CPU estimates 1 050 houses have been damaged, leaving 73 families homeless. In addition, 68 small dams have breached and other infrastructure like roads, clinics and schools have been destroyed.

The unit’s latest situation report lists flooding as a “massive threat”, particularly to low-lying areas like Muzarabani, Middle Sabi, Chikwalakwala, Malapati, Gokwe and Tsholotsho.

Secretary for Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Engineer George Mlilo, told The Sunday Mail, “Flooding is still going on in several areas across the country, and we are unable, as yet, to ascertain the true extent, in monetary terms, of the damage that has been caused.

“But we will carry out a proper assessment once the rains have ceased. It is only then that we will be able to give estimates of the cost of flooding. There has been damage to roads, dams, clinics, schools and other infrastructure, and the appropriate ministries responsible for them will act on reconstruction.

“We will negotiate support from well-wishers and our development partners whom we expect to help in the mobilisation of funding for the work.

“While we are aware that the damage was not caused by any human fault, but an act of nature, we acknowledge that our people who were affected will need the support of Government in their reconstruction work. As Government, we will provide that support, but it will not be wholesale.”

The CPU situation report reads: “The situation is compounded by the fact that most of our national dams, especially the small and medium-sized ones, are now full, resulting in most of the rainfall received being converted to run-off.

“In Mashonaland Central province, Manyame River banks are collapsing, encroaching towards Tsetse division buildings. Distribution of grain and inputs has been hindered due to incessant heavy down pours.”

In Bindura, the report says, two children drowned in a dam after an ox-drawn cart they were aboard overturned.

A hailstorm damaged four teachers’ houses, classroom furniture and blew off classroom roofs at Shamva’s Chemhanza Primary School; while in Mount Darwin, a house belonging to a disabled couple that looks after orphans was destroyed.

In Masvingo’s Chivi district, nine homes in Ward 29 were destroyed as floods reached window level. Three bridges in the area were also washed away.

In Gokwe South, crops and fields belonging to 100 families were damaged, while two students from Chinatsa Secondary School in Marondera were killed by lightning.

The report also reads, “Mashonaland West province, Zvimba: All dams along Manyame River are spilling over. Five people were marooned whilst fishing and were air-rescued. Two people in a canoe were swept away, and one escaped whilst the other one drowned. The body is yet to be found. Twenty-five illegal settlers on Heydon Farm had their homes reportedly destroyed by heavy rains. The district (authorities are yet) to confirm.”

Other Sadc countries — particularly Mozambique — are grappling with La Nina-induced flooding.

In Angola, 1 800 houses in the capital, Luanda, were damaged while a significant number of others were completely destroyed.

A fortnight ago, media reports said seven people in South Africa died after being caught up in flooding. – State Media

Pasuwa Better than Reinhard Fabisch

“…all the other matches Pasuwa led such as in Cote D’ivoire where he drew, in Cameroon where he drew – all those are big teams. Even when he fought Algeria which has now withstood Senegal…”

The late Reinhard Fabisch might have turned the National Sports Stadium into a fortress causing them to beat some of the continental giants like Cameroon, Guinea and Egypt, but Kallisto Pasuwa has outshined him.

The touching image of Pasuwa and his blanket as the Warriors headed to Malawi by bus to kick-start their Afcon 2017 qualification campaign in June 2016 is iconic.

In its thousand words, that picture epitomises how much the former Dynamos coach loved his job and gave it his all, never mind his technical deficiencies.

His decision to turn down a jaw dropping offer from Tanzania to concentrate on the Warriors’ Afcon 2017 campaign was more than ample evidence of his dedication.

Hours before Zimbabwe played Malawi in the opening Afcon qualifier in Blantyre, Pasuwa revealed to The Sunday Mail Sport why he was prepared to keep slogging on despite a toxic operating environment.

“There is nowhere in the world where you will find the perfect environment, one thing I was taught at a young age is to make do with what is there. Being the national team coach is a dream come true and I have to make the best of this opportunity,” Pasuwa said.

But patriotism doesn’t win you matches and Pasuwa is paying the price for failing to step up to the plate at major tournaments.

Now as his lanky figure slowly slouches from the scene, Zifa start the process of hunting for a new coach.

However, with perennially empty coffers and a history of making shockingly absurd decisions, that exercise may deliver more pain relief for the Warriors’ long-suffering fans.

Zifa president Phillip Chiyangwa says he will announce “the way forward” after going through the Afcon head of delegation’s report and the High Perfomance Committee’s recommendations.

“I am accountable to congress so before I say anything I am under the football guidelines compelled to read these reports, make a few phone calls and then announce the way forward,” he told the state media.

Mr Chiyangwa also told ZimEye last week Pasuwa will remain in place although he could go following committee decisions.

He continued saying, “You will notice everywhere there is a war, Pasuwa being ambushed, people saying, “Batai munhu uyu!”

“I was in Johannesburg, I have only just arrived. I have not even seen the Head Of Delegation’s report… spoke to the Head Of Delegation (via phone) and he said to me ‘we are now flying back’.

“This is how things work: you wait for a briefing from the head of delegation, he is the one to tell me if there is anything else.”

Chiyangwa added complaining that Pasuwa is being attacked for his performance at this cup but people are disregarding his successes at other matches. “What about all the other matches Pasuwa led such as in Cote D’ivoire where he drew, in Cameroon where he drew – all those are big teams. Even when he fought Algeria which has now withstood Senegal,” Chiyangwa told ZimEye.

The ZIFA boss criticised people who “speak before they have thoroughly exhausted introspection into where Pasuwa came from.” – state media/additional reporting

Boy Drowns While Swimming With Friends

A 10-YEAR-OLD boy from Tshabalala in Bulawayo drowned on Thursday while swimming with his friends at a nearby dam in the neighbouring Sizinda suburb.

Proud Kondowe, who was doing Grade 5 at Maphisa Primary School is said to have left home at around 3pm with his friends after knocking off from school. A family spokesperson, Mrs Eunice Sibanda told Sunday News yesterday that when the friend realised that Proud had drowned he rushed to inform the parents.

“Proud and his friends went to swim at Itiye. His mother was not at home by that time. It is believed that when they arrived at the dam they started swimming. While they were still swimming, Proud drowned and one of his friends who saw him dashed home to seek help from adults. It’s a walkable distance but it was too late to save him, I assume that when the boy arrived at his home it was already late to save Proud,” said Mrs Sibanda.

Mrs Sibanda said the Bulawayo City Council should fence off the dam because most children were frequenting it to swim.

“Our children are not safe; the city council should fence off that dam or fill it up because soon it will be a death pool. The children go there to swim without the knowledge of their parents,” she said.

Proud will be buried in Bulawayo tomorrow. – State Media

Chinese Build New Parliament

Construction of the new Parliament Building in Mt Hampden will begin in June as experts finalise baseline and architectural surveys to establish site suitability.

Secretary for Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, Engineer George Mlilo, said, “We have a team of Chinese experts in the country who are conducting soil tests on the site ahead of the beginning of construction. The tests will seek to establish whether the soil type on the site is able to support the kind of structure we intend to construct.

“Once the tests are completed, which we expect anytime soon, then construction will begin. We expect proper construction work to begin by June this year.”

The new Parliament Building will accommodate 500 legislators compared to the current building which is overcrowded by 270 National Assembly representatives and 93 Senators.

The relocation of Parliament will spur Mt Hampden’s local economy as other structures and services such as banking halls, residential developments, shopping malls, hotels and Government buildings will also be built.

Zimbabwe has secured US$101 million for the construction of the building with the Chinese government availing US$90 million.

‘‘The other US$11 million will be injected by Zimbabwe’s Government for offsite infrastructure such as residential areas and shopping centres.

Urban planning expert Mr Percy Toriro said, “Zimbabweans must strategically position themselves to do infrastructure development work as either main contractors, or sub-contractors.

“There are a number of advantages that come with the new site. First, the proposed site is free from the congestion and other limitations associated with the city centre location. Second, there is an opportunity to come up with other developments in Mount Hampden since there is ample land for development …

“There is concern that the City of Harare has run out of land for development and this move opens up a new frontier for commercial, industrial, and other urban development land needs. Zimbabweans must now strategically position themselves to do infrastructure development work as either main contractors, or come in as sub-contractors. A development of that nature and magnitude presents lots of opportunities that we must be on the look-out for.”

The new Parliament Building is one of 12 mega-deals signed between China and Zimbabwe last year.

The deals cover key sectors such as infrastructure, telecommunications and energy.

In 2007, the Chinese government funded construction of a new parliament building in Lesotho at a cost of US$9 million through Shandong Yantai Construction Company. The building was completed in 2012. – State Media

Tsvangirai A Liar – Mphoko

VICE-President Phelekezela Mphoko says Bulawayo and the Matabeleland provinces should not be fooled by MDC-T leader Mr Morgan Tsvangirai’s claims that he will bring recourse over Gukurahundi.

VP Mphoko said this while addressing journalists after a closed door meeting with the local Zanu-PF leadership at Davies Hall, Zanu-PF’s provincial headquarters in Bulawayo.

Mr Tsvangirai has been to the Matabeleland region ill-informing people about matters related to the civil disturbances of the immediate post-Independence era that are commonly referred to as Gukurahundi.

Said VP Mphoko: “Tsvangirai was around a few weeks ago and said as MDC-T, they want to fix the Gukurahundi issue and said Zanu-PF has failed and he can do it. Let us not forget that when Cde Nkomo’s car was shot he (Tsvangirai) was at the forefront, when an officer in charge was killed in Tsholotsho he was there too. The same person wants to address the Gukuraundi issue now.”

VP Mphoko said MDC-T had been in existence since 1999 and since then had never delivered anything tangible for ordinary people.

“They have councillors in this city, they are doing nothing for the people, all they promise is lies,” he said.

VP Mphoko also urged people to support for Zanu-PF, saying: “Lina Bulawayo province, you have undecided people, you do not know what you want when it comes to elections. We have no problems with other provinces in the region and also in Mashonaland, but Bulawayo disappoints.

“You are the ones who suffer at the end of the day yet you do not know the power of your votes. You have adequate voting power which can change your lives but you just do not realise it.”

He said opposition Zim-PF leader Dr Joice Mujuru had also visited the region with empty promises. “We want Bulawayo to tell us what it wants and we will deliver as Zanu-PF. We want to give the people things that will change their lives for the better so they must open up and tell us,” he said.

The VP urged ruling party Members of Parliament to work hard to imrpove people’s livelihoods.

“There should be a difference between an MDC MP and our own. Zanu-PF MP’s have direct communication and relationship with the ministers so they should get access easier, opportunities are unlocked faster for the people. The MPs need to talk about it during Parliament and their concerns will be heard and addressed,” he said. – State Media

Dokora Wants Maths In Shona, Ndebele, Xhosa

ruinous…Minister Lazarus Dokora

After destroying the educational system, controversial Primary and Secondary Education Minister, Lazarus Dokora now wants to introduce Mathamatics in local languages.

Dokora says the approach means learners in, say Binga, will get Mathematics, Computer, Science and other lessons in Tonga, the district’s dominant language.

The Constitution lists Chewa, Chibarwe, English, Kalanga, Koisan, Nambya, Ndau, Ndebele, Shangani, Shona, Sign Language, Sotho, Tonga, Tswana, Venda and Xhosa as Zimbabwe’s official languages.

ECD has the following learning areas: Languages, Visual and Performing Arts, Physical Education, Mass Displays, Mathematics, Science, Family and Heritage, and ICT, the state media reports saying.

Dokora told the state media, “The medium of communication or instruction for infants or our ECD is supposed to be the mother language. This will ensure children feel at home during lessons and that they express themselves freely.

“If you look at the Nziramasanga Commission Report (on education review), these were some of the recommendations we adopted. What we took, among other areas, were the issue of language as a medium of instruction and increasing the number of years for primary education from seven to nine.”

Dr Dokora also said, “Some among us would have taken me to court if we had said children must learn (using) their mother languages without the backing of the Constitution. However, this is all constitutional. We want to ensure our children interact with everyone.

“Language must not be seen as a barrier to learning or communication. This new (curriculum) ensures children master skills at an early age, and we must be proud of ourselves. The same emphasis we are putting on mathematics or English is the same emphasis we are putting on sport. We all want to ensure our children eke out a living from this education, and we all know that we can’t all be academics.”

Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association secretary-general Mr John Mlilo said while the approach was commendable, Dr Dokora should ensure adequate teacher training first.

“Early Childhood Development involves a lot of playing; it’s important for the activities to be packaged in the language learners understand. The question is: If the medium of instruction is Venda, for example, do we have enough qualified teachers?

“The issue of textbooks at that level is not critical unless the teacher does not speak a particular language. So, we need more qualified teachers at ECD.”

Progressive Teachers’ Association of Zimbabwe secretary-general Mr Raymond Majongwe said, “The new curriculum is noble, but its implementation has been chaotic. Teachers are at sea; there is unbelievable chaos in our education sector at the moment.”

An analyst who preferred anonymity weighed in: “Ideas such as these are transformational. However, it is implementation and relevance that concerns some of us. The key questions we should ask ourselves are; are some of the recommendations made in 1999 relevant to our times? If other countries adopted certain things successfully, does that mean we can copy them and also get the same results?

“Where are the Mathematics or Science books that are written in Ndebele, Venda or Shona? If we are able to answer these questions satisfactorily then we are on the right track. Those countries that use their indigenous languages have such books translated to support the concept.”

Government introduced the new curriculum in 2016 to balance academics and vocational technical training.

The document was crafted around the recommended around recommendations of the 1999 Commission of Inquiry into Education and Training which was headed by Professor Caiphas Nziramasanga, with input from a cross-section of stakeholders.

It also includes emerging global education trends.

Countries like Germany, China, Cuba and Russia deliver lessons in their indigenous languages, and research indicates this accounts for their high education standards.

The Nziramasanga Commission pointed out that educational, technological and cultural attainments could be raised if instruction was in a learner’s first language. It implored Government to review the policy on indigenous languages to make them compulsory in schools.

At the time, only English, Ndebele and Shona were in the curriculum.

Part of the Commission’s report reads, “There is need for language policy that is clear and explicit. . .Indigenous languages facilitate participation by all in the process of development. Throughout the colonial era, indigenous languages were denigrated.”

Grace’s ex-Hubby Goreraza Speaks On Pastor Mawarire

Stanely Goreraza | People with small minds think little, like small children. The same people who think Evan Mawarire should be disqualified from adding his worth to the struggle to get power back into the hands of the people of Zimbabwe, where it rightly belongs. Some people arrogate themselves powers derived from delusion, making themselves captains of the struggle, who have the right to chose who can and who cannot lead the democratic struggle.

Small thinkers never see the big picture because all they see in their minds is small. When the picture of the struggle gets big, they get offended because that picture does not fit in their small minds.
There are alternative routes to a new Zimbabwe besides the MDC. Forces active for change in Zimbabwe should never be in competition but complementation for completion of the mission. That is why in the military we have armies, navies and indeed Air forces. They fight together in different theaters but for the same objectives and outcomes.

Morgan Tsvangirai can lead on the ground, and another in the sky and still another at sea. The moment they operate in competition they go to war with each other. What war will you win when you are also at war with yourselves?

The MDC needs to reprimand some of their very foolish senior leaders and the foolishness they display for the public to see.

The struggle is for all Zimbabweans and very much included is Evan Mawarire and his followers. All Zimbabweans have a role to play, small or big, every role must be played.

Why would the intelligence services create a movement which would shut down the country and have themselves and the president in a panic? People with little to no intelligence would push that thinking as it has little to no thought behind it.
Jealousy makes people insecure and envy makes them malicious. Before Evan came on board there was no action, only hand wringing and arm folding. He moved the whole country to a standstill with just a phone, and that standstill was passive action which shook the powers that be.

Those who now speak against him have big positions in big parties but all they do is post about Chelsea and Liverpool on social media.

Itai muchiita godo shoma. Go and watch football in England and let those who can and want to move Zimbabweans do so…

War Vets Bay For President Mugabe Nephew’s Blood

HARARE – In an ominous threat, angry war veterans have warned President Robert Mugabe’s nephew, Patrick Zhuwao — who is also Indigenisation minister — that they will haul him over the coals over his withering attacks on Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa once the nonagenarian leaves office.

The disaffected former freedom fighters also fired a broadside at Cabinet ministers Jonathan Moyo and Saviour Kasukuwere whom they claim are kingpins of the Zanu PF faction going by the moniker Generation 40 (G40), which is rabidly opposed to Mnangagwa succeeding Mugabe.

Speaking to the Daily News this week, the spokesperson of the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA)  Douglas Mahiya, warned of a future “revenge mission” targeted at the dreadlocked Zhuwao once Mugabe leaves office.

“Jonathan Moyo, Kasukuwere and Zhuwao don’t want to talk about their future because they are benefitting from the status quo when they did not take part in the liberation struggle.

“And Zhuwao must congratulate himself for being a Cabinet minister. The other two (Moyo and Kasukuwere) may speak but he (Zhuwao) is a foreigner and must shut up.  Mugabe’s last day and last term of office will also be his last.

“On the day that the president leaves, then Zhuwao must also run. After all, what has he done for the country? We are war veterans, we do not refer to Zhuwao at all besides that he is Mugabe’s nephew and he should stand warned,” the forthright Mahiya told the Daily News.

The vocal Zhuwao, who war veterans claim is Malawian, has had several run-ins with the disgruntled ex-combatants over the past two years.

But Zhuwao laughed off the threats to banish him from Zimbabwe, going on to describe the vets as cowards.

“I cannot comment on people who want to portray courage and bravery in the media but are scared to confront me. They talk through newspapers. Mbwende dzevanhu (cowards),” he told the Daily News in a curt response.

The fed up war veterans have publicly come out to back Mnangagwa to succeed Mugabe — who turns a mature 93 later this month — as Zanu PF’s seemingly unstoppable tribal, factional and succession wars get ever uglier.

They have also warned that blood may even flow in the country if Mnangagwa does not succeed the long-ruling nonagenarian who has studiously refused to name his Zanu PF successor, arguing that the party should rather follow what he sees as a more democratic process to manage his succession — doing so through a congress.

In the run-up to Zanu PF’s annual conference that was held in Masvingo in December last year, Zhuwao was also threatened with death after a self-claimed Mnangagwa loyalist, Frank Onismo Ziyambi, warned him via Facebook that he risked being killed for his withering attack on the Midlands godfather.

Zhuwao had at that time publicly attacked Mnangagwa and his Team Lacoste faction, including war veterans — describing the VP as “unelectable” and not worth supporting because of the tendency of his “excitable” backers to bully and threaten people.

Then, Mahiya responded saying that Zhuwao had “no moral ground” to comment on their activities as he was “not yet born” when they waged the war of liberation in the 1970s.

“Zhuwao doesn’t know anything … when we went to war he was not yet born. He is trying to personalise or making it (leadership of Zanu PF and the country) a family thing because you will never find justification when this issue comes from the nephew of the president.

“They want to separate us from the people, but we will remain with the people. We expect such a thing from Zhuwao considering his age. If it was not the determination of war veterans, he would never have had his dreadlocks and he would never have been a minister.

“We don’t see him occupying that position as justifiable. It’s part of what we think is nepotism. He doesn’t know about the revolution, he only knows this from books. He must shut up. People must not call people like Zhuwao comrades. It’s an abuse of the name,” Mahiya thundered.

In their latest attacks on the G40, the war veterans also ratcheted up their attacks on Moyo and Kasukuwere whom they described as cowards.

“G40, where are they coming from? They call us drunkards, that is not what we expect from a political commissar (Kasukuwere) but it is now clear that he is the one who is drunk. He sees everybody as drunk.

“Does he mean that we do not think and that his corrupt group that has caused so much suffering in the party and country is the only one that thinks?” the agitated Mahiya asked.

“Moyo, Kasukuwere and Zhuwao do not know anything about this country. Tovaisa pasi paana mujibha (we place them below the level of war collaborators). Their motive is to ensure that they will be at the helm after Mugabe.

“It is shocking that they do not want a member of their own party as a leader. Where is the integrity of the party going to come from?

“When I am speaking, I am speaking for the war veterans. Come on Kasukuwere, you don’t understand the organogram of a party in which you claim to be the commissar,” Mahiya added, further claiming that Mnangagwa had been chosen to succeed Mugabe in 1977 when he was elected special assistant to the nonagenarian.

“The problem is that the party has been joined by people who started at the top in the politburo and were never in the structures.

“Who will succeed Mugabe will be determined not by contemporary events, but by historical facts and Jonso (Moyo) and his friends cannot turn back the hands of time,” Mahiya said.

The disgruntled former freedom fighters, have also recently been ratcheting up their loud calls for Mugabe to retire now and pave the way for his long-time aide to take over the reins at both party and government levels.

They have also tried in vain to pressure Mugabe into sacking Kasukuwere and Moyo.

Since their fallout with Mugabe first burst out into the open in July last year, after they released a damning communiqué in which they savaged the Zanu PF leader before serving him with divorce papers, the ex-combatants have not missed an opportunity to attack Mugabe.

Their stunning fallout brought to an end a relationship that dates back to the days of Zimbabwe’s liberation struggle.

They have also claimed that Mugabe’s continued stay in power was now a stumbling block to the country’s development, adding rather contemptuously that the nonagenarian would be “a hard-sell” if he ever contemplated contesting the 2018 presidential poll.

Mugabe responded by warning the war veterans that they would be dealt with severely, including through the use of extra-judicial suppression methods that his former liberation movement incorporated during the country’s independence war — such as incarcerating dissenters in inhuman dungeons where they were forced to live like caged rats.

Immediately after this threat, police swooped on some of the ZNLWVA executive members who were arraigned before the courts, which eventually set them free. – Daily News

Grace Mugabe Caught In Tyre Theft Row

Grace Mugabe has been dragged into a tyre theft row after her Queen of Grace’s national secretary-general claimed his prosecution was aimed at tarnishing the first lady’s name.

President Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace, is the patron of Queen of Grace.

Ephraim Chizola, of St Martin’s in Harare, is standing trial for stealing three tyres.

The 34-year-old allegedly failed to return the tyres lent to him by a fellow Zanu PF political activist last August after he had a breakdown on his way to Harare.

Chizola, who is being tried by magistrate Yeukai Chigodora, has since had a warrant of arrest issued against him after skipping court on Wednesday.

He is denying the charges.

The Queen of Grace leader is being charged with theft as defined under section 113 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act chapter 9:23.

It was the State’s case that sometime in August 2015, Chizola had three tyre punctures and asked Miriam Manhenga, a member of an unnamed political group, for assistance so that he could proceed with his journey to Harare.

He promised to return with the tyres but never did, leaving Manhenga with no option but to file theft charges against him.

However, Chizola is claiming that Manhenga is trying to tarnish his reputation and the image of Queen of Grace and the first lady, who is the face of it.

He claimed that the litigation has high political interest rather than the desire to recover her tyres, further claiming that Munhenga was being paid to drag his name through the mud.

Chizola said he had the breakdown at the first lady’s service, and the litigation was therefore a personal attack on her.

Munhenga, however, insisted that there was nothing political about the whole issue.

She told the court that when she approached Chizola to ask about her tyres, he assaulted her with the assistance of his wife.

Munhenga said the first lady should not be dragged into the issue because the tyres were handed directly to Chizola. – Daily News

Drama As Bus Passengers Are Robbed at Gunpoint

In typical movies style, A AND A Logistics Bus Crew and passengers were robbed in Ngundu on their way from Beitbridge. The incident took place around 2am yesterday after four men, who were on the bus turned against the crew and fellow passengers. Three of the men had guns and they are said to have boarded the bus just like ordinary passengers before they assaulted, sprayed at and robbed bus crew and passengers of valuables.

The case was recorded at Masvingo central police station RRB number 2953597. Victims of the robbery narrated the spine chilling incident to H-metro yesterday. John Kudakwashe Svosve said: “I boarded the bus at the Beitbridge rank around 11pm and I think the bus left the rank around midnight for Harare. I was a standing passenger in the bus and some other passengers also came into the bus, they were four and they stood in front of me in the passage way. When they (the armed robbers) got into the bus, no
one suspected anything but as the bus left the rank, I think around 2am we had passed the Ngundu road block when one of the four said he had been called by people he was supposed to have gone with. And when the driver stopped the bus, three of the guys followed him.

“We thought the three were maybe going to relieve themselves then one of them fired shots aiming for the driver and it hit the windscreen, then they fired again. We had thought they were wearing woollen hats, it turned out that they were face masks and they started spraying us with some substances. Three of the guys had guns and of those only two came into the bus. Apart from the guns, they also had sjamboks and they ordered everyone to lie down as they demanded all valuables. People had to surrender cellphones and cash.

The robbers were however, assaulting everyone who was resisting,” said John who was trembling. He added, “I had to lie on the legs of people who were on nearby seats, I managed to save two of my smart phones, cash and my wallet after I hid them in the seat covers. I only remained with my simple phone which
is not a smart phone and only $2. They started moving in the bus with plastic bags, ordering everyone to put all the valuables into the plastic bag. Those who were resisting were being heavily assaulted and to show how dangerous they were, they dragged the conductor outside the bus where they started assaulting him. They stripped him naked and they came back into the bus and they continued to demand more. When they were done, they told the driver to start the bus saying if he was not to comply, they would deflate the tyres by
shooting at them that’s how we drove off. Unfortunately, we only saw a road block at the Chivi turn off and they told us to go to Masvingo police station and the cops managed to recover some cartridges,” said John.

John who looked traumatized said he was actually in physical contact with one of the robbers, “mumwe wacho ndatombenge ndagumahna naye,” When they were speaking they were using shona but with Ndebele accent, but then when they were leaving, they were now using Ndebele. When I saw them putting on their face masks I remembered the advice that we always get from the police that when there is an armed robber, you
should comply with all the demands so it was really traumatic. Pandatorerwa phone nyangu kambudzi ne$2 ndipo pavati mudhara unafamba nemari yakawanda, ndipo pavabva vandi sprayer mumaziso.

The substance which they sprayed on me is very irritating not only on the eye but even on the skin, as you can see, I still have the stains of spray. I’m still in shock because as you can see, I’m still trembling because they sprayed direct in my eyes. We thank God for life. When they told us to lie down, I lied down on pressing against one woman’s baby such that she told me to move. But I told her kuti ambuya ndikangosimudza musoro chete ndafa, hausimudzike musoro, asi ndanzwa tsitsi nemwana wandange ndakatsikirira, hapana zvandaiita. Pazoitawo amai vamwe vazokurumidza kufunga vazosimudza mwana uya uya mbichana mbichana,
inini ndichisimukirawo zvishoma.

Another victim, Tendai Karimazondo said: “When these men said they wanted to disembark, we thought they were relieving themselves but they dragged the conductor out and two started assaulting the conductor. The other two then sprayed the whole bus as
they also started assaulting people, I was so terrified that I gave them my bag which had a tablet phone. I really lost out because the phone was an order for my customer, it was valued R1000 and that customer has been calling me asking me about the phone”.
The driver of the bus said he was too traumatized to talk about his ordeal, as he only said “they aimed gun shots at me but I’m lucky to be alive. Ndini wavanga vachida kupfuura. The conductor of the bus Amin Madzi said he had been severely assaulted saying that he was lucky to be alive.

“Vandirova nechamboko, chavakaruka vega chewaya. Ndiri kurwadziwa asi ndotenda Mwari ndiri mupenyu,” he said.

Another woman said she almost jumped from the bus when the robbers had fired the two shots.
“They told me that if I was to jump off, they were going to kill me,” she said. Tsitsi Makumbinde said,” we boarded the same bus with these people in Beitbridge and we didn’t know that they were thieves, they were four. Just out of Beitbridge they instructed the driver to stop the bus, for some time I thought they was something wrong with the bus. Immediately, I saw those four men wearing masks they sprayed the whole bus
with an unknown substance and everyone started coughing uncontrollably. They had two plastic bags and they instructed everyone in the bus to hand over money as well as cell phones. I was left with mine because I hid it under the seat, but almost everyone surrendered their cellphones and money.

That is when they grabbed the conductor, stripped him off his clothes and assaulted him, it was so bad that we thought he was going to die. He sustained some injuries but he has not yet visited the hospital. The other men who were seated on the
back seat were also assaulted. Lastly, they enquired from the driver if he did not sustain any injuries and he told them he was alright that’s when they told him to drive us to Harare and they got off the bus,” she said.

Tsitsi added,” We reported the matter in Masvingo at Chivi turn off, they wrote a report for us and because we did not have any money we did not pay anything at any road block or toll gate. At the police station, we reported that a certain lady was spotted calling the four men advising them that the bus was about to take off at Beitbridge. The police said they will carry investigations. They (robbers) did not take any of our luggage they only took money and cell phones,” added Tsitsi. – State Media

WATCH VIDEO : Mawarire Death Scare

Horrifying video flashes of the death of Learnmore Jongwe were replayed this morning, after it was revealed that Pastor Evan Mawarire has been tormented with the same treatment, the late former MDC Spokesman received which led to his untimely death while in prison in 2002.

Evan Mawarire was last night pushed into the Chikurubi Maximum prison D Section, where he spent the night with convicted murderers. Learnmore Jongwe was murdered by a prisoner in disguise in a staged fake suicide act in 2002.

As ZimEye.com interviews Chikurubi Maximum Prison experts this morning, ThisFlag lawyer Fadzayi Mahere gave the below update.

“Pastor Evan Mawarire has been classified as a “D” Class remand prisoner and is being detained at Chikurubi Prison where convicted murderers are held instead of the normal remand holding centre.

This is not about Pastor E as an individual but it’s a battle for the soul of Zimbabwe. Are we a constitutional democracy – where free speech, free assembly, free conscience and political rights are respected – or not?

Do we speak out; do we choose apathy?

Do we hold onto disappointment that he chose family over fame – or do we rally behind what his incarceration represents for us as a country?

Police cells are awful.
Remand prison is inhuman.
Chikurubi serious crimes section is hell.

The injustice of his circumstances require unity on our part. This is offensive to the core.

Khupe Runs Scared

Rufaro Mufundirwa | It is likely that the negotiations on the coalition of opposition parties in Zimbabwe to corporately face Zanu PF in 2018 national elections, will go beyond the elections date as the battles of egos and tribalism continue.

The MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai wants a coalition where he will be the leader, a declaration that ZimPF used to contest before the Bikita West disaster of course. Now that ZimPF has proved itself in the recent Bikita West by-election that it does not have any support base of significance, the puzzle on who will be the boss was naturally solved. ZimPF will join the coalition as the underdog, meaning its leader, Joice Mujuru will settle for the vice presidency. As is now the political tradition in Zimbabwe that every political party has a Ndebele representative in the presidium, obviously that coalition will also have a second vice president from that region.

There is Thokozani Khupe, the MDC-T vice president who hails from that region. She has a chance of retaining her post in the coalition. However, it seems Tsvangirai and Welshman Ncube, the leader of the MDC, have buried the hatchet for the sake of the coalition. Thus, Ncube will come in also as principal of his own party. There has to be an incentive for Ncube to join the coalition and that can be nothing other than the vice presidency. But the coalition cannot have three vice presidents, meaning somebody will have to step down. In this case, the likely casualty is the honourable madam. This is so for two major reasons. Firstly, one party cannot have two members in the presidium. MDC-T will have Tsvangirai. Secondly, the gender element will have been catered for through Mujuru. Zimbabwe, as patriarchal as it is, cannot have two women in the presidium.

Madam Khupe’s thoughts have already raced ahead to these permutations. These are the possibilities that have caused Khupe to run scared of the coalition. She is emotionally against the coalition of the MDC-T with any other opposition party of significance. However, she is aware that even her leader is now supportive of the coalition and she cannot swim against the tide. Thus, she has decided to proffer a template of a coalition that she wants.

This week, Khupe said the coalition is only needed in Mashonaland provinces where the MDC-T has not been performing well. She said: “As a political party, you want a coalition because you will have realised a gap in your party and as the MDC-T, where is our gap? It is clear that our gap is in Mashonaland East, West and Central where we have consistently not done well.” It’s quite interesting to have a coalition that will only apply in certain parts of the country. A coalition formed on regional basis will be one its own kind. Madam Khupe has exposed her fear of the coalition, fear of Ncube in particular. She knows for sure that she will kiss good-bye to her post of ‘senior vice president’ once Ncube joins the coalition.

It never rains but pours for poor Khupe. Tsvangirai recently crowded her office by appointing Elias Mudzuri and Nelson Chamisa as additional vice presidents, an appointment that clearly shows she was not managing the duties of a vice president on her own. Tsvangirai fell short of expelling her but as a modestly educated lady; she can read clearly Tsvangirai’s intention. She only survived through a tribal ticket and she wants to use same to survive in the coalition.

However, madam Khupe forgets quickly. The year 2013 is not very far for her to forget that her party dismally performed in Matebeleland South and North provinces. So it’s not only in Mashonaland provinces that the MDC-T has “consistently not done well,” to borrow her words. She only wants to use Matebeland votes, perceived though, for power negotiations. The only sensible thing she said which deserves an accolade is her confession that her party has not been doing well in Mashonaland East, West and Central. She was not far from the truth. Her statement exonerates Zanu PF which her party has been accusing of rigging elections every time it was given a hiding. She has admitted that her party has not been doing well and that is the utmost truth.

“NIKUV” CIO Officer Assassinated In Cruel Murder

Peterson Ndlovu| A CIO officer who worked with the Israeli company, NIKUV was assassinated in a cruel murder.

Shupikai Mashereni who was also a ZNA ex officer had his life cut shot soon after engineering the rigging of the 2013 elections, his family has concluded.

cruel death…Shupikai Mashereni

After a ZimEye investigation which began in 2014, the Mashereni family has conceded that the late Zimbabwe Electoral Commission Director Of Information was killed soon after demanding his promised farm.

Mr Mashereni died under mysterious circumstances shortly after demanding from then CIO Minister Didymus Mutasa a 70 hectare Headlands farm promised before the July elections, in February 2014.

“We know what they did to him; it can only be evil to kill someone who is working for you,” a relative told ZimEye.

Mashereni died on Sunday the 23rd of February 2014 at South Medical Hospital in Chitungwiza from suspicious food poisoning. His work colleagues told ZimEye the man quickly died after turning purple black in front of them, another sign throwing doubt on the official explanation which says that it was food bacteria that caused his death.

ZimEye.com has in its possession impeccable digital electronic mail records proving how Mashereni many times battled Mr. Mutasa to obtain the promised farm shortly before his sudden death. In the serialised correspondences, Mashereni further revealed before and after the 2013 elections how the ZEC digitally adjusted figures in advance to ensure Robert Mugabe and his ZANU PF party win last year’s elections.

“We finished them a long time ago, they (MDC) were beaten up by birds of the air,” Mashereni would write before the election results were announced. Subsequently Mugabe won the elections out-rightly with more than 62% of the votes.

While in India, soon after he was kicked out of ZANU PF, Mutasa denied ever issuing land to either Mashereni or anyone else. He told ZimEye.com, “I don’t know absolutely anything about it…So kwandiri, I never gave promised anybody any farms,

“That’s not true, as I said to you again and again it’s not true,” he reiterated when asked to clarify what he meant.

Admissions.
But the State Media reports that Mutasa did indeed dish out farms to various people. Several issue letters issued by Mr Mutasa have been audited showing how using his influence Mutasa allegedly of a truth did parcel out farms in Headlands Constituency to a select group of people who included friends, politicians and close family members.

Said one source, “Most of the farms in the Headlands area are owned by Cde Mutasa’s close relatives. Even some of his relatives who are not resident in Zimbabwe have been allocated farms which they have never set foot on. One example is a farm called Homewood in Headlands which he allocated to his relative who is based in London, but who has never set foot on the farm….

“He has also given offer letters to a number of white farmers in Headlands,” said the State Media source.

Mutasa was once Mugabe’s highly trusted party official entrusted with top secrets and high profile intelligence operations, and he is now People First leader Joice Mujuru’s top aide.

Mother Has Sex With Daughter’s Boyfriend for Months

Washington – A mother from Alpharetta, Georgia, pleaded guilty Thursday to seducing her daughter’s boyfriend and having sex with him.

Kathy Tompa will spend 15 years in prison after she admitted she had a sexual relationship with the 15-year-old for months, WSB-TV reports saying.

Tompa was originally charged with child molestation and rape in May, but few details on the case were released.
In court, the boy’s mother told the judge that her son had to move out of the county because of the humiliation it caused him.

“She stole my son’s innocence,” she said. “She stole his childhood. I’m angry with her and I’m angry with myself.”

Tompa had been in contact with the boy since December 2015 through text messages, WSB-TV reported. At one point, she groomed the boy for a sexual relationship with her daughter before persuading him to have sex with her.

“She was advising him on how to kiss her daughter, how to touch her daughter, when would be an appropriate time to touch her buttocks, what would be the appropriate time and manner to remove her shirt,” Forsyth County Assistant District Attorney Heather Dunn told the judge.

WSB-TV reported that Tompa also helped the boy sneak out of the house and hide the affair from his parents.

Tompa has to pay a fine and the boy’s therapy services. She must also register as a sex offender.

AirZim Sues Agent Over Unremitted Ticket Fees

National carrier, Air Zimbabwe (AirZim) has dragged a local safari operator, Zimbabwe International Travel and Tours, to the High Court demanding over $17 885, which the firm allegedly failed to remit after selling tickets on behalf of the airline.

The national airline issued the summons sometime in December last year after efforts to have the cash paid failed to yield results.

In its declaration, AirZim said sometime in October last year, Zimbabwe International Travel and Tour, its agent, acknowledged, in terms of a deed of settlement, its indebtedness to the airline to the tune of $17 885, 62.

The cash was an outstanding amount in respect of manual ticket sales, which the firm had failed to remit.

“It was a term of annexure A that the defendant (Zimbabwe International Travel and Tours) would liquidate the sum of $17 885,62 through successive monthly instalments of $5 000 on the 30th of every month commencing on October 30, 2016 until the debt is fully discharged,” AirZim said.

“It was further a term of annexure A that if defendant fails to comply with any of its obligations under annexure A the outstanding amount would become immediately due and payable and the plaintiff would be entitled to institute legal proceedings against the defendant without notice to it for the recovery of the outstanding amount.”

AirZim also argues that its agreement with agents states that safari operators are responsible for costs incurred by the airline in enforcing the agreement.

“The defendant is, therefore, liable to plaintiff in the sum of $17 885, 62 and interest thereon at the rate of 5% per annum calculated from November 1, 2016 to date of payment in full,” AirZim said. In response to the claim, the safari firm disputed the amount owing, saying it had reduced the debt by $4 500.

The firm said part of the money was transferred into the airline’s lawyers trust account and the other part was paid directly to the airline.

The matter is still at the pre-trial stage. – State Media

‘Be Careful What You Wish For’, Tsvangirai Warned

MDC leader, Welshman Ncube has warned opposition parties against pressing the self-destruct button by throwing unnecessary conditions around the issue of a proposed coalition ahead of general elections next year.

The warning comes following pronouncements by MDC-T vice-president, Thokozani Khupe declaring that the country’s biggest opposition party, by parliamentary representation, does not need partners particularly in the Matabeleland region.

But MDC spokesperson Kurauone Chihwayi said the 2008 elections “taught” opposition parties not to be reckless lest they “snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.”

“Those responsible for prevailing on others to walk away from the 2008 coalition agreement need be careful that they are not seen today to be working against the clear public sentiment that we must all do everything in our power to give the people of this country a fighting chance to remove the ruinous Zanu PF regime from power in 2018,” he said in a statement.

Chihwayi said the proposed coalition should be constructed in such a way that it provides a winning platform for its presidential candidate.

“We would have thought that some basic common sense dictates that winning parliamentary seats in whatever parts of the country and in whatever quantities is wholly irrelevant, to the primary question of garnering the requisite number of votes for the presidential candidate, which is what is required to cause a change of government,” he said.

In 2008 MDC-T leader Morgan Tsvangirai defeated Mugabe, but failed to reach the required 50% plus one vote, only for the Zanu PF leader to force through a violent and blood-y run-off from which the opposition pulled out at the 11th hour.

Tsvangirai was tripped by Mavambo/Kusile/Dawn leader, Simba Makoni’s 8%.

Khupe on Thursday literally threw the cat among the pigeons after questioning the rationale of the proposed coalition stretching to areas in which the MDC-T already commands majorities.

“It is clear our gap is in Mashonaland East, West and Central, where we have consistently not done very well. So, when looking for a coalition partner, you must look for a partner, who is going to be able to cover
that gap,” she said, in comments critics say are aimed at ring-fencing the region she views as her political castle.

Khupe’s political star is waning following Tsvangirai’s decision to appoint two more deputies last year, a move seen as a vote of no confidence in the former deputy Prime Minister.

Tsvangirai has just concluded a 10-day consultative visit to Matabeleland and announced he had received overwhelming support for a coalition, especially with former Vice-President and Zimbabwe People First leader Joice Mujuru. There are reports of internal ructions over the proposed alliance within the MDC-T. – Newsday

Mugabe Told – Call Tsvangirai

KUWADZANA East MP Nelson Chamisa (MDC-T) yesterday proposed that President Robert Mugabe organise an urgent meeting with MDC-T leader, Morgan Tsvangirai to resolve the country’s deteriorating political and economic environment.

The opposition MP made the suggestion during the Second Reading Stage of the Finance Bill to pass the $4,2 billion 2017 National Budget.

“Mugabe must phone Tsvangirai for a meeting and include other political parties and MPs to discuss problems in this country, because we cannot continue to go and pass thin budgets that are inadequate in this country,”he said.

Chamisa’s statement came in the wake of other opposition MPs accusing Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa of overburdening the public with punitive taxes and fines to raise funds for government operations.

“Government must remove the burden of raising revenue from its citizens because I do not think billions of dollars can be raised through fines,” Thokozani Khupe, leader of the MDC-T in the National Assembly, said.

Glen Norah MP Webster Maondera (MDC-T) added: “The minister wants to raise level three spot fines from $20 to $30. That charge is too much and people cannot afford it.”

Meanwhile, National Assembly Speaker Jacob Mudenda read the riot act on MPs for truancy, saying he would compile a list of all MPs that absconded debate on the Finance Bill resulting in the motion falling out of the National Assembly Order Paper due to lack of a quorum.

Debate on the Bill was aborted last Thursday and on Tuesday due to lack of a quorum of 70 MPs in the House.

This resulted in Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa yesterday moving again that the Finance Bill be reinstated on the Order Paper.

When Mudenda threatened to name and shame truant MPs, Chamisa challenged him to do the same with bunking Cabinet ministers. – Newsday

Mawarire Has Mean Spirited Critics

Nomusa Garikayi | When Pastor Mawarire left Zimbabwe in the middle of his #ThisFlag street protests many people accused him of giving them the courage to protest against the injustices in the land but when the confrontation heated up he deserted the protesters and escaped to America. Some people called him a coward.

It is sad to note that the some of the Pastor’s critics are still calling him a coward even though he has returned to Zimbabwe and is now in jail. He has since been charged with “subverting a constitutional government” and could face 20 years in jail if he is convicted. (Considering Zanu PF blatantly rigged the 2013 elections and therefore per se cannot be a constitutional government – but that is another matter).

It must be state here and now that Pastor Mawarire did not commit any crime, the right to peace protest is a universally accepted democratic right. True, Zimbabwe is not a democracy, it is a de facto one-party state, but the more reason for the protest.

If Pastor Mawarire is convicted and sentenced to a lengthy jail term, maybe that will satisfy his critics. They will have had their pound of flesh!

Remember the money lender Shylock in The Merchant of Venice who agrees to loan Antonio some money but asks for a pound of Antonio’s flesh as a guarantee. When Antonio failed to repay the loan by the agreed day, the money lender refuses to be repaid thrice the agreed amount insisted on the pound of flesh! Shylock, the bloodthirsty, vengeful and inflexible!

I think Pastor Mawarire’s pay heed to Trevor Ncube’s humble, philosophical and introspective comment. “I will not judge Pastor Evan at all nor call him a coward. I say so because I myself have no guts to do what he has done & continues to do,” he tweeted.

Just to add to what Trevor Ncube said, what Mawarire achieved in those few weeks before he left for America, was more than what many of us will ever do in a life time! He gave hundreds of thousands if not millions of Zimbabweans hope, courage and a voice to say no to the tyranny of Zanu PF. This is why the regime is mad at him and would want him locked at Chikurumbi Prison a.s.a.p. and throw away the key.

Having given us the hope, courage and the voice; it was up to us to carry the protest forward and not stop until the regime addressed out concerns. We did not need Mawarire to hold our hands every step of the way!

I would not be surprised that the most vocal of Mawarire’s critics are in fact the mean- spirited Shylocks of this world. How many of those calling Mawarire a coward have ever said or done anything critical of the corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship much less took part in even one street protest?

Imagine having a flat tyre in a cold rain night. There are those who will never lift a finger to help and expect others to get out in the mud and cold and all the dangers of the night to sort out the problem. I think people like Pastor Mawarire are some of those people who will risk their own person comfort for the good of all.

As for Pastor Mawarire’s critics, they are the selfish individuals who, from the comfort of the car, will wind down the window to scream “Get on with it, I am freezing in here!”

Policeman Says Mugabe & Chihuri Are “Human Faeces”

attacked…Robert Mugabe

Terrence Mawawa, Gweru| A daring Zimbabwe Republic Police officer, Constable Comfort Kawere who wrote vulgar words on President Robert Mugabe’s picture, says Mugabe and Police boss Augustine Chihuri are both “human faeces”.

Kawere who is based at Silobela Police Station has also been interrogated by Central Intelligence(CIO) following the incident.

Kawere was last month drinking beer at a local bar and later went to the charge office, moved towards Mugabe’s picture on the wall, and wrote vulgar words. He likened Mugabe to human faeces. He also insulted Commissioner General Augustine Chihuri in similar fashion.

According to police sources, CIO operatives arrived at Silobela Police Station where Kawere was detained and took him to their offices and interrogated him.

Opposing Mugabe is virtually regarded as a taboo in Zimbabwe. Hundreds of people have been arrested and tortured while others have been abducted for challenging the veteran ruler.

“Kawere wrote vulgar words likening the President to human faeces. He arrived at the charge office in a drunken stupor, took a pen and wrote vulgar words on the President’s picture. He has since been arrested,” said a police source.

Midlands Police Spokesperson Joel Goko said the National Police Spokesperson was the right person to comment on the matter.

“I cannot comment on such issues. I will compile details and forward them to the National Police Spokesperson who can then comment on the matter,” said Goko.

No details about his scheduled appearance in court have been availed because the case is highly political in nature, it has emerged.

O-Level Pass Rate Goes Up

OVER 29 percent of pupils who sat for Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) November 2016 examinations passed. This represents a 2.10 percentage increase on the previous year’s results.

At a function to officially release the results in Harare yesterday, Acting Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Sithembiso Nyoni said: “School candidates who wrote five or more subjects in 2016 were 155 492. 46 587 obtained Grade C or better in five or more subjects, yielding a 29.96 percent pass rate compared to 43 518 who obtained Grade C or better in five or more subjects (in 2015) yielding a 27.86 percent pass rate.

The pass rates for school candidates show an upward trend in performance from 2012 to 2016.

“There was an increase of 2.10 percent from 2015 to 2016, resulting in 2016 candidates performing better than the 2015 cohort.”

Minister Nyoni said the results showed a notable improvement in pass rates for learning areas like Integrated Science, Chemistry, Human and Social Biology, Geography and other Arts learning areas like Sociology, History and Tonga.

“These improvements are in line with the ministry’s thrust in the teaching of Science, Technology, Arts, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM),” she said. Male candidates outperformed their female counterparts, unlike in Advanced Level where girls performed better than boys.

“The difference in performance was significant across the learning areas,” she said.

“The results we are celebrating today are quite unique in that we have a number of candidates who sat for 15, 16 and 17 subjects and obtained straight ‘As’. For this reason, it is worth celebrating.

“As we celebrate we acknowledge the dedicated service of our teachers and ministry staff who worked tirelessly to improve the results. It is important for the nation and our stakeholders to realise that these results are a product of quality assessment and monitoring by Zimsec to ensure security of examination papers. For this reason, allow me to commend Zimsec for a job well done.“ – State Media

Businessman Survives Armed Robbery Ordeal

A PROMINENT Bulawayo businessman survived a terrifying ordeal when three armed robbers raided his home in Hillside suburb and tied his hands and legs before getting away with $1 000 and property worth $1 400 .

Mr Rahmn Bhai Patel, the owner of DG Patel Fruit and Vegetable Wholesale Market at the corner of Robert Mugabe Way and 4th Avenue, lost the money and property to the gang that hit him on the head twice with the butt of a pistol.

The suspects covered his bleeding head with a sheet, tied his hands and legs with belts before they fled with the loot.

The incident happened on January 15 at about 10.30AM.

One of the assailants, Raphael Ngwenya (25) of Entumbane suburb, has since been arrested but his two accomplices Bhekani Ndlovu and Shakes Ndlovu are still on the run.

Ngwenya appeared before Bulawayo Regional Magistrate Mr Joseph Mabeza yesterday and was not asked to plead to an armed robbery charge.

He was remanded in custody to Monday.

The State, represented by Mr Tinashe Dzipe, alleged that Bhekani and Shakes went inside the house while Ngwenya stood guard in their getaway car — a Toyota Quantum with South African registration numbers.

“Ngwenya drove the car to Hillside suburb and parked it at corner Pembroke and Weir Roads. Shakes was the one carrying the gun. He and Bhekani proceeded to the complainant’s house. They jumped over a pre-cast wall,” said Mr Dzipe.

“They gained entry into the house through a kitchen door that wasn’t locked. Complainant was watching television in the lounge. Shakes approached him and struck him twice on the head with the pistol butt.”

He said the duo force marched Mr Patel into all the bedrooms demanding cash.

“Complainant gave them $1 000 cash he had in the house. He also gave them a Seiko wrist watch, Apple I-pad, Samsung S5 and Samsung Note 1 all valued at $1 400. Ngwenya sold two of the stolen phones to a computer technician in the city centre on January 21,” Mr Dzipe said.

He said Ngwenya was raided by police at his home in Entumbane suburb at 4AM on January 27.- State Media

Mushonga Challenges Journalist

PROPORTIONATE Representative MP Mrs Priscilla Misihairabwi-Mushonga (MDC) on Thursday asked Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda to rule if a journalist from our sister paper The Herald was not in contempt of Parliament after a report on her bringing flowers into the House.

The outspoken legislator gave Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa the flowers during debate in the Chamber on Tuesday, which she said should be delivered to a female official in his ministry.

Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga also gave Minister Chinamasa a T-shirt inscribed with his Shumba totem for him to wear.

Both presents were meant to show her appreciation of the ministry’s decision to remove duty on sanitary wear in the 2017 National Budget that Minister Chinamasa presented last year.

“The positive that I found in this budget was obviously the issue around sanitary wear,” said Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga during her contribution. “I just want to thank the Honourable Minister, after all these years begging him to do something about sanitary wear, we see that he actually did something about it.”

Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga commended Minister Chinamasa for introducing her to a lady in his Ministry, a Mrs Mhini, to discuss about the removal of duty on sanitary wear.

“So, I have a present for Ms Mhini, which I am going to ask the Honourable Minister to take to her, just to thank her and say, that is what we expect from all women,” she said.

“Mr Speaker Sir, I want to thank the Honourable Minister for accepting to do this. In a typical and traditional way of thanking our males and men, we normally use the totem. I have this T-shirt for him (Minister Chinamasa), it is called Mazvita and printed Shumba, thank you so much.”

Her contribution, which lasted almost 20 minutes, touched on various issues about Minister Chinamasa’s ministry and other legislators who spoke after her also gave complimentary remarks to him.

In her complaint to Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda, Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga took exception on why three legislators were quoted verbatim by The Herald when her contribution was paraphrased.

She also disputed that she had commended Minister Chinamasa on the work he is doing on the economy.

Adv Mudenda said he would want to study her complaint before making a ruling next week.

This was not the first time Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga brought aids into the House to create visual and interactive experience for fellow legislators.

In July 2015, she caused drama when she brought underwear and waved the used panties, before charging at Gokwe-Nembudziya MP Justice Mayor Wadyajena (Zanu-PF) whom she accused of undermining her on the floor.

She was ejected from the House for charging at Wadyajena, who had pulled her jacket and passed a comment.

Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga was protesting against the importation and sale of second-hand women’s undergarments, which she said exposed women to diseases.

In another stunt in December 2015, Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga brought an infant into the House when it was in session.

She sought to make her point while asking Parliament to appreciate the need to put mechanisms in place to cater for nursing mothers.

Mrs Misihairabwi-Mushonga also once brought samples of sanitary wear into the House to illustrate a point on the need to remove duty on them. – State Media

Floods Menace As 7-Ton Truck Swept Away, 2 Feared Dead

TWO people, one of them a teacher, are feared dead while nine others narrowly escaped death when a truck they were travelling in was swept away by a flooded river in Lupane District.

The incident happened at the Bubi River Bridge at about 6PM on Thursday .

The bridge is on a gravel road linking Daluka Ward 19 to St Luke’s area in Kusile Rural District.

The driver of the truck, a seven-tonner, which was coming from delivering food aid, allegedly missed the bridge and hit side pillars before the truck fell into the river.

The teacher, who could not be named immediately, was reportedly stationed at Zwangendaba Secondary – a few hundred metres from the scene of the accident.

The other victim is believed to be a local villager.

By last night, the two people were still missing but the nine other passengers and crew were all accounted for.

The truck was dumped by the water about 60 metres downstream.

The truck’s crew comprising of three people including the driver, were coming from delivering drought relief food in Daluka in the same district when they offered eight local people a lift.

The Chronicle visited the area yesterday and Bubi River was still flooded with villagers and school children failing to cross.

Villagers from either side of the river embarked on a search in the river while waiting for divers from the police Sub-Aqua Unit who arrived late in the afternoon.

Some villagers reportedly assisted a heavily pregnant woman cross the river to St Luke’s Hospital where she was due for delivery.

Acting District Administrator for Lupane, Mr Zachariah Jusa, who is also chairman of the local Civil Protection Unit, confirmed the incident.

“The accident occurred at around 6PM when the truck, which is part of those that carry drought relief food in the district, was returning to base. I was at the bridge in the morning when the truck crossed as I was doing routine checks to assess the situation. Unfortunately when they returned in the evening, I think the water level had risen as the bridge was submerged,” he said.

Mr Jusa said the driver missed the bridge after hitting a hump.

“I think the driver could have gauged that his truck would cross but hit a hump which caused the truck to swerve. That’s when he missed the bridge and the truck fell into the water throwing out the eight people who were in the back and the three crew members in front,” he said.

“I think it’s prudent that people don’t spread falsehoods as what has been circulating on social media that the bridge was swept away isn’t true.”

Yesterday, the river was still flooded and villagers said it was worse than the previous night.

Bubi-Lupane Dam downstream near Lupane Centre was also said to be full, contributing to the flooding in the area.

One of the survivors who was in the truck, Mr Bongani Moyo, said he was still in shock.

“It was so sudden. All was well as the driver tried to drive through but lost control when he hit a hump and that’s when we heard the truck hitting some pillars,” he said.

Matabeleland North Provincial Education Director Mrs Boithatelo Mnguni confirmed that a teacher was among those involved in the accident.

“The teacher taught at Zwangendaba High School in Lupane. I can’t give more details because the CPU and the police are dealing with the matter,” said Mrs Mnguni.

CPU acting director Mrs Sibusisiwe Ndlovu also confirmed the incident, saying they informed the police sub-aqua unit in Bulawayo after receiving the report.

“We received a report from Matabeleland North Province and we communicated with the sub-aqua unit in Bulawayo to attend to the incident,” said Mrs Ndlovu.

She warned people against attempting to cross flooded rivers.

Mugabe Birthday Bash Humiliation As Only $3 300 Is Raised

Matebeleland South has raised only $3 300 but pledges are said to be trickling in for this year’s 21st February Movement Celebrations to be hosted by the province.

The celebrations to mark President Mugabe’s birthday will be held at Rhodes Estate Preparatory School (Reps) at Matopo Research Station.

Yesterday committees tasked to spearhead the preparations for the event met in Gwanda and received the pledges. Ten cattle, 600 litres of fuel and 300 bags of 50 kilogrammes of mealie-meal were pledged and cash amounting to $3 300 was paid.

Addressing the committees, the Minister of Rural Development, Promotion and Preservation of National Culture and Heritage, Abednigo Ncube, urged members to work as a team so that the event becomes a success.

“The national executive chose Matabeleland South to host the celebrations so we should work as a team so that the day becomes a success. Business people from Matabeleland should donate in cash and kind for this noble cause. The date for the celebrations has not been set but our deadline for all pledges should be 15 February. All the pledges should be fulfilled before this date,” said Ncube.

Last week, Zanu-PF National Secretary for Youth Affairs,  Kudzanai Chipanga, said this year’s venue was in line with the youth league’s theme of promoting domestic tourism which they adopted two years ago. – State Media

ZRP Cops Battered By Kombi Driver

A KOMBI driver has attacked two cops manning a roadblock along the Mutare-Chimanimani Highway alleging that they stole his $21.

The kombi driver who had his shirt torn in the ensuing fracas was being handled by two of the cops. He accused the cops of stealing his money and insisted that he was going nowhere without getting back the cash.

His claims were confirmed by some of the people at the scene who said they saw the cops stealing from him.

However, on the other hand, the police officers, who had now arrested the kombi driver and were handling him by the belt, rubbished the theft claims.

Instead they accused him of resisting arrest as well as assaulting them. The commotion continued for close to an hour, making the busy highway impassible.

The kombi driver was subsequently taken to Mutare Central Police Station where he spent the weekend in holding cells.

On Monday, Benjamin Chigwedere (30) was hauled before the courts on allegations of resisting arrest and assaulting the two cops.

He denied both counts when he appeared before Mr Poterai Gwezhira. Allegations were that he assaulted Constable Everson Mark Marozva (32) and Sergeant Penelock Manjonhi after having been stopped at the roadblock.

Public Prosecutor, Mr Fletcher Karombe said constable Marozva who was in the company of Constables Mapforere, Mujera and Sergeants Mangundu and Manjonhi were manning a police roadblock at Fashu when they stopped Chigwedere who was driving a commuter omnibus.

“With the intention of arresting the driver for carrying excess passengers, Marozva stopped the commuter omnibus which Chigwedere was driving. The suspect however, shouted at the police officer using vulgar words saying the police were used to taking people’s hard earned money for free.

“Marozva tried to arrest the suspect for his conduct but he resisted and went on to assault the officer and tore off his police uniform,” said Mr Karombe.

It is further alleged that Chigwedere grabbed the handcuffs from Manjonhi and started hitting him on the mouth several times and on the chest with the handcuffs.

Marozva and Manjonhi sustained injuries and were taken to Mutare Provincial Hospital where they got treatment. Chigwedere was remanded out of custody and the matter goes for trial on February 14. – State Media

SATANISM: Chihuri Exposes Minister Dokora

Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo| Police Commissioner General, Augustine Chihuri has torn into and exposed controversial Education Minister Lazarus Dokora describing him as an overzealous and misguided official bent on Satanism.

Chihuri also accused the minister of imposing his personal beliefs on hapless school pupils. Last year Dokora banned the Bible in schools and voluntary club, Scripture Union, among other measures shortly before denying it all when confronted by ZimEye.com.

Dokora at the time even attacked state media editor, Fatima Bulla claiming she lied when she published the first news article, CLICK HERE TO READ MORE.

Most recently, Dokora has ordered the looting of all school development funds – emptying the bank accounts of struggling schools for the financing of a ZANU PF controlled bank account whose signatories are unknown.

Addressing cops at the Commissioner’s Service event held at ZRP Phoenix in Masvingo last week, Chihuri urged teachers and school heads to safeguard Christian principles and values. He said Dokora was dragging pupils into Satanism and idol worship.

Dokora was widely criticised for introducing the disputed National Pledge last year. School heads, parents and teachers staged protests at Dokora’s abrupt changes in the education system. Christian denominations also vehemently resisted Dokora’s policies.

Chihuri said:”I want to warn to teachers and school heads to resist the evil changes that are taking place in the education sector. Some of the initiatives promote idolatory.”

He added:”I hear these initiatives come from an overzealous man and please do not listen to him,” said Chihuri.

Dokora has been on record defending his policies claiming he is determined to upgrade the education standards in the country.

Dokora also claims he is a devout Christian.

Meanwhile Chihuri also attacked false prophets and urged Christians to open their eyes to avoid being deceived by emerging hypocrites. He said it was unfortunate the false prophets were grossly misleading the people.

President’s Son Killed By A Dog | GAMBIA UPDATE

Banjul – A dog that killed a young son of the Gambian president Adama Barrow has undergone a fatal injection, according to the veterinary unit of the country’s Ministry of Agriculture.

Seven-year-old Habibou Barrow was bitten by the dog on January 15.

He was pronounced dead while being transported to the hospital.

The president’s team confirmed that he had died as a result of dog bites, without explaining the circumstances of the tragedy.

“On Tuesday we administered an injection to the dog to “put him to sleep”, the anonymous Ministry official told AFP, in reference to an operation of euthanasia.

“We concluded that it was not prudent to let this dog continue to wander the streets,” the source said, adding that tests indicated that it was not affected by rabies.

“We carried out tests which showed that he was not infected with rabies,” he added.

The death of young Barrow occurred while his father, then President-elect was in neighbouring Senegal awaiting his investiture on January 19 this year. The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) flew Barrow out of the Gambia at a time that his predecessor Yahya Jammeh refused to cede power amid high political tension.

Meanwhile, President Adama Barrow revealed Wednesday the names of the first batch of some 10 ministers appointed Tuesday and swore them into office.

The ceremony was held at Kairaba Hotel, the temporary office of Barrow, who has yet to occupy the State House, or the presidential palace, which was “sanitised” by ECOWAS forces following the forced departure of Barrow’s predecessor Yahya Jammeh.

“This is a new Gambia. The new Gambia is a reality with these cabinet appointments,” Barrow said in the swearing-in ceremony he presided over. – Africa News/Xinhua.

Tragic Death of Mutare Teachers College Boss

RIP…J Muwandi

REST IN PEACE PAPA J.MUWANDI

I don’t know how to start it, but we have received the saddest news from the fast growing Mutare teachers college. The death of our dearest principal didn’t only shock a lot of people but the college and Zimbabwe at large has lost a visionary man, a principled man, and above all a man of integrity. I never had chance to meet him one on one but within the limits that I could see and listen to him, he had inspired me and changed my thinking direction and my behaviour of operation especially as a teacher. He was a man with a spirit of encouragement, a true mentor, brilliant, precise and straight forward!

His words to me were very clear, “always thank the Lord any ‘far’ you go…..” He was a man anyone could be proud of. I can’t try to study this but the ministry of Higher education and the ministry of primary and secondary education can surely act as my witness in this …ZIMBABWE HAS LOST A MAN OF PURPOSE. Who am l to judge the Lord’s decision, but God has struck and pierced the hearts of thousands students of Mutare teachers college! A lot of students (including different WhatsApp groups for the students of the college) have put on their profile pictures the photo of our dearest Father….we cry together …and we will always be together in spirit….we say may God our Lord let him pass through!

It might appear too political if I want to talk about the vision he always foresaw and told us ..the future Mutare teachers college…with him it was easy to understand the brand name ‘JEWEL OF EXCELLENCE’….He had a vision of a better institute ..a better college. He was a man of his words …it was clear in his face …his self…clear that he was a good leader anyone would want to copy from! I can’t tell how far much will those whom he worked close to will miss him, but am not sure if they will find any replacement equal to him.

We have no more words to say since we are shading tears every minute we imagine this scenario. This is the way of every human flesh, we are born to have a few time here on earth and depart, die and go back to the dust where we came from! Who can resist it, no one at all! Mr Muwandi we will one day meet, Sanai kuti chengeterawo pekugara, chasungwa pasi nekudenga chasungwa, u will enter the kingdom of God and purposefully serve as His angel forever till we meet!

Mawarire Let Down By Civil Society

By Shyleen Mtandwa| Civil society organisations have ignored Pastor Evan Mawarire at their own peril.

Zimbabwe could have realized political change last year if the civil society had joined #Thisflag social movement leader Mawarire, when he mobilized for peaceful demonstrations against President Robert Mugabe’s regime, Bella Matambanadzo a civil society expert has said.

Mawarire led a massive protest which paralyzed business in Harare on July 6 last year.

He led protests calling for the stepping down of President Mugabe, who stands accused of causing the untold suffering of Zimbabweans.

Addressing the civil society community, at a HIVOS stakeholders meeting in Harare this week, Matambanadzo, a civil society expert, blamed CSOs for ignoring protests which were initiated by social movements.

“Civil society missed the opportunity in 2016 by not collaborating with harsh tag movements a development which could have changed the country’s politics,” she said.

Matambanadzo said members of the civil society were “jealousy” of the emergency of social movements which they viewed as competitors in the struggle for democracy which most of them had been in for years.

“In my view, maybe the civil society thought that it (social movements) was a new thing on the bloc instead of celebrating and joining the new revolution or maybe they panicked and did not know how to respond to the new forces,” she said.

MUGABE BIRTHDAY BASH: Khupe Leads Boycott

MDC vice president, Thokozani Khupe, has joined the loudening chorus by opposition and civil society groups who are calling for a boycott of President Robert Mugabe’s 93rd birthday celebrations in Matobo.

The bash, organised by the 21st February Movement, will be hosted by Matabeleland South Province at the Rhodes Estate Preparatory School (Reps) in Matobo, where the Gukurahundi massacres took place between 1983 and 1987 when the national army’s Fifth Brigade unit crushed dissent by so-called “dissidents” — disgruntled former guerrillas and supporters of the late Joshua Nkomo’s Zapu — killing thousands.

Khupe’s sentiments are on the back of the Matobo Business Community this week calling on opposition parties and civil society groups to institute measures to block Zanu PF from holding the celebrations in the area.

“I have never seen such insensitivity because you can’t go and provoke people who are still bearing wounds and scars. What kind of disrespect is that?” Khupe queried.

“Instead of Mugabe apologising because of what happened during Gukurahundi where over 20 000 civilians were massacred, you (Mugabe) have the audacity of celebrating your birthday while other people are still buried in shafts like Bhalagwe,” she said.

Speaking at Nkomo’s memorial service on July 2, 2000, Mugabe admitted that “thousands” had been killed during the campaign, calling it an “moment of madness”.
Khupe called for a total boycott of the event.

“Those who are calling for a boycott are justified because honestly we cannot try and sanitise something which cannot be sanitised. People must not attend this unholy event. They must just stay away from this madness,” she said.

The former deputy premier accused some Zanu PF hardliners of misleading the nonagenarian leader, a development she said has contributed to many challenges the country has been battling for decades now.

“Some of the people in Zanu PF must advise Mugabe properly because it is not the right choice. Honestly, thousands of dead people have not been given a proper burial, for me it is just unheard of. It’s a sign of serious disrespect to that particular community. It’s a sign of being insensitive to issues at hand.”

Zanu PF youth secretary, Kudzai Chipanga, has declared that the ruling party would not be dictated to by the opposition.

“The issue around Gukurahundi was dealt with by our elders … Mugabe and the late…Nkomo. Matabeleland South is a Zanu PF stronghold with the party having won all seats in the province, Matobo included, where we have two Zanu PF legislators. As a party, we will not be driven by the opposition but our members,” Chipanga told State media.

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace in Zimbabwe documented at least 3 750 killings and speculated that the actual number could be double that, or higher, since its coverage was limited to the Tsholotsho districts of Matabeleland North and the Matobo districts of Matabeleland South.

Locals put the figure at between 20 000 and 30 000. In a unanimously adopted resolution in 2005, the International Association of Genocide Scholars estimated the death toll at 20 000. – Daily News

Mujuru Takes Bulawayo By Storm

Ray Nkosi | Zimbabwe People First President Joice Mujuru this morning brought Bulawayo business to a standstill, after she volunteered to leave the comfort of a guarded convoy of cars and walk in the streets of Bulawayo unguarded “to introduce herself to the ordinary people” in the city.

ZimEye.com can exclusively reveal that hundreds of excited people left their vending bays, offices and taxis to throng the streets doing some toyi – toyi march and singing IsiNdebele traditional revolutionary songs as they followed the former Vice President, mix and mingle with the people on the streets.

From the City Centre, Mujuru asked to be taken into Nkulumane High Density Suburb where she further walked around Sekusile Shopping Centre and made courtesy calls into a few houses in the township where she sought to speak to the people in the streets asking for their opinion on how they would want to see the country’s ills addressed.

Residents who spoke to ZimEye.com in the streets where Mujuru went through hailed the former ZANU PF stalwart for her humility and ability to open up and speak to ordinary people on the ground.

The residents who managed to get close to her praised her for openly asking the people to forgive her for the time she was associated with ZANU PF and asked to be accommodated into the fight for a new democratic Zimbabwe.

“I was almost in tears when I spoke to her and she said to me she apologises for being associated with the party that has brought our sufferings and wants to join us and work on new solutions for the country with all of us,” said Mr Thamu Sibanda a vendor at Egodini Terminus.

“Guaranteed she now has my vote,” said Sibanda.

Mujuru remains in the City overnight where she is expected to meet with the Bulawayo Province Executive Committee to sort out some factional fights affecting her party in the province. She is also expected to visit Binga in Matabeleland North over the weekend.

President Dos Santos Quits

Angola’s President Jose Eduardo Dos Santos is stepping down but will remain the leader of the ruling party.

He has been in power for almost four decades. Mr Dos Santos, president of the oil-rich country since 1979, announced in a televised address that the MPLA party’s candidate in the August election will be Defence Minister Joao Lourenco.

He has been accused of ruling with an iron-fist, and of nepotism after he appointed his daughter Isabel dos Santos as head of the state oil company Sonangol.
She has been named by Forbes magazine as Africa’s richest woman, worth an estimated $3.3bn (£2.3bn).

Representatives for Ms Dos Santos deny that her wealth is largely due to her father’s position as president. – Agencies

Fears For Mawarire

A Zimbabwean pro-democracy campaigner has warned that social movement activist and cleric Evan Mawarire may become victim of the country’s “subverted” legal system when he is expected to appear in court today (3 February).

Pastor Evan Mawarire, the face of Zimbabwe’s #ThisFlag protest campaign, who was detained at Harare airport on 1 February as he returned to the country after six months in exile, was detained at Harare Central Police Station. He was then handed fresh charges of “insulting” the Zimbabwean national flag, inciting public violence and subverting a constitutionally-elected government.

The priest is expected to appear in court this afternoon, as he reaches the expiry of the 48-hour police custody period limit.

IBTimes UK spoke to human rights and democracy activist Linda Masarira, who says she has herself been repeatedly dragged through courts over trumped up charges, ahead of Mawarire’s court appearance. Speaking outside the Harare Magistrates Court, Masarira, said supporters have been told there was no time set for the priest’s appearance in court. “Authorities said prisons were not bringing people to court today because they have no fuel,” she said.

“How did we get to a stage where a government organisation – prisons – is not sure to take prisoners to court? That is an infringement of prisoners’ rights, of their freedom of liberty. You are innocent until proven guilty,” Masarira said in an exclusive interview.

Under Zimbabwean law, the court is supposed to give the detainee bail, but the activist said she was “scared” magistrates would “find a reason not to give him bail”, suggesting court may deny the clergyman bail because of fears over his influence.

Pastor Evan Mawarire
Pastor Evan Mawarire, who said he has no political ambitions, has become the public face of a wave of protests in ZimbabweMUJAHID SAFODIEN/AFP/Getty Images

“I actually pray that they give him bail, but I know that even if they do, it will be so exorbitant. Remember, in June, when they gave bail for $1,000? In a country where there is no jobs, where is one supposed to get $1,000 from?”

The activist, who many describe as President Robert Mugabe’s nemesis, was released in late September after she was incarcerated on 6 July over her participation in anti-government demonstrations that rocked the African nation.

Masarira was arrested again in October last year alongside four other activists including Dzamara Patson, whose brother Itai, a journalist turned activist, has been missing since his abduction on 9 March 2015.

“The problem that we have had for a very long time in Zimbabwe is the absolute absence of the rule of law. We have Zanu-PF [Mugabe’s ruling party] in our courts and magistrates being told what to do. They can not make their own decisions.”

Zanu-PF party, which has been in power since the country gained independence from the UK in 1980, is accused of having repeatedly repressed political opponents and allegedly carrying out mass atrocities against civilians to consolidate power.

In this environment, “no one really knows what the outcome [for Mawarire] will be but the Zanu-PF is harassing and abusing the Pastor and trying to suppress his freedom,” Masarira said.

“I foresee them incarcerating him, because why would they come up with the charges of subverting a constitutional government, which carries a sentence of 20 years? They are just trying to frustrate people and quell [protests that they see as] a problem in Zimbabwe.

She added: “When [the people] find that someone who has been trying to protest – a protest leader to be precise – has been charged for 20 years, naturally people will go back to their homes and stop protesting for fear of being arrested. That’s what happened to me.”

Police officers, who charged the clergyman yesterday, claim Mawarire circulated several videos on social media encouraging Zimbabweans “to stage violent demonstrations to subvert the constitutional government of Zimbabwe and resultantly from August 2016 to January 2017 there have been violent demonstrations in the country where several property was destroyed.” – BT News

Mnangagwa Appoints Dabengwa Deputy ?| LATEST

Ray Nkosi | Cornered Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa, is reported to be courting Zapu leader Dumiso Dabengwa to deputise him in a post- President Robert Mugabe arrangement.

Local papers report that in a Team Lacoste leadership line up, Mnangagwa initially had Zimbabwe Defence Forces commander General Constantine Chiwenga and State Security minister Kembo Mohadi as vice-presidents.

Mnangagwa who might now be considering joining opposition politics as an option is reported to be  be entertaining dialogue with Zapu leader Dumiso Dabengwa, to come in as his other deputy, although officials say there is little chance that the former Zipra intelligence supremo will join Zanu PF, the reports further claim.

By joining opposition ranks, Mnangagwa would have effectively handed over the Zanu PF Presidency to First Lady Grace Mugabe, on a silver platter, she being his biggest challenger in the party at the moment.

Mnangagwa would also not be the first senior Zanu PF leader to join opposition ranks, he took over from Joice Mujuru who is building her own Zimbabwe People First party, which will challenge Mugabe in 2018 elections.

The reports further claim that the two Mnangagwa and Dabengwa, might not agree given their personal animosity towards each other due to the Gukurahundi detention and killings. Dabengwa was a victim of detention and torture in the 1980s when Mnangagwa state security minister until 1988.

The Mnangagwa faction which is trying all options also believes an extraordinary congress at which Mnangagwa would be catapulted into leadership is in their interest as it ensures he becomes a shoo-in for the presidency. They fear that if Mugabe wins elections, he would purge his ambitious deputy and puts someone. However, in a preemptive strike Mugabe is also reported to be working on a speedy cabinet reshuffle.

“For the Mnangagwa faction, they know that there may be a high risk that Mugabe may purge him and his associates under influence from Grace, should the president contest and win the elections. Mugabe is unlikely to make such a move before the elections as it will destabilise the party. But after the polls Mujuru-like purges can occur,” another senior party official said.

Officials said the G40 faction believes Mugabe’s prolonged stay in power would give them a chance to reverse the gains made by Mnangagwa in the succession race. Mnangagwa is considered a front-runner to succeed Mugabe as he has the support of most Zanu PF politburo and central committee members.

He is also controlling cabinet and has the support of the military and war veterans.

However, G40 faction has Mugabe’s backing and controls the party’s national structures and support base.

Owing to the uncertainty over Mugabe’s future, both camps have been conducting doing some scenario-planning to prepare for possible change and contingencies. – Independent, Agencies

Mawarire Arrested By 9 CIOs | LATEST COURT UPDATE

Shyleen Mtandwa | #ThisFlag Pastor Evan Mawarire who was arrested upon arrival at the Harare International Airport, is appearing in Court, with his lawyers telling the court that the Pastor was arrested by nine unidentified CIOs upon arrival, on Wednesday evening.

Mawarire is represented by lawyer Harrison Nkomo and Advocate Fadzayi Mahere.

Mawarire has been charged with subverting a constitutionally elected government, which carries up to 20 years in prison. He also has an additional charge of abusing the Zimbabwe flag which carries a fine not exceeding $200 or imprisonment for a period not exceeding six months or both such fine and imprisonment.

A warned-and-cautioned statement that was circulating on social media yesterday showed, the State alleges that from July to December 2016, Mawarire incited the public to revolt against Mugabe through public videos. He is also accused of organising a demonstration against Mugabe at the United Nations in New York all in a bid to end the Zanu PF leader’s rule illegally.

His lawyers told the court the nine men refused to identify themselves. Among the state’s case against Mawarire is that he embarrassed President Robert Mugabe, when he led demonstrations in New-York last September.  The state is also seeking to hold Mawarire in custody until 17 February to allow for further ‘investigations.’ More to follow,,,

Joyce Mujuru -A Biblical Saul : A Critical Paradigm

By Don Chigumba | Hon. Joyce Mujuru declared during her recent interview with Fadzayi Mahere that she is a biblical Saul. This article seeks to disagree with Mujuru’s claim. Everyone including Christians and non Christians know that Saul was an evil man just like the perpetrators of the Gukurahundi who slaughtered 20,000 innocent Zimbabweans in Matabeleland from the early 1980s to 1986. Saul was later converted when God appeared to him in form of lighting on his way to Damascus.

The narratives of Saul’s conversion educate us that evil people are there to stay and God has no power to kill them. That is why the evil leaders of ZANU PF including Joyce Mujuru (who killed 20,000 innocent Zimbabweans in Matabeleland)  are even blessed and having life expectancy of above 92 years. I am still hopeful that one day they will see God via lighting on their way to Chimoio and Nyadzonya.

I was shocked to hear Joyce Mujuru claiming that she is a biblical Saul. I thought she made a mistake by depicting her personality to that of biblical Saul. My feeling is that Joyce Mujuru resembles ‘a biblical Judas Iscariot’, a position which I will defend in this article. There is a world of difference between Mujuru and the biblical Saul and it is therefore difficult for me to agree with Mujuru’s wishful thinking.

Four reasons why Joyce Mujuru is different from the biblical Saul:

Number One – Joyce Mujuru with the help of her evil colleagues (from ZANU PF) murdered 20,000 innocent Zimbabweans during their ‘moment of madness’ in Matabeleland.  They even broke the record set by Adolf Hitler. According to the evidence on the ground, the figure of the victims of the biblical Saul is not clear but strong evidence is pointing to a conclusion that Saul murdered less than 1000 innocent Christians in order to protect his god. Basing on figures given above, claiming that Joyce Mujuru is a biblical Saul (in murdering innocent people) is like believing that Robert Mugabe is the son of God.

Number Two – Saul was an evil poor person while Joyce Mujuru is an evil and corrupt rich person. She even failed to disclose the source of her family’s wealth. Her husband Solomon Mujuru is said to have benefited unnecessarily from government tenders and had no record of paying taxes to the government. I urge Joyce Mujuru to provide evidence against these claims.

Number Three – Saul was converted (saw God via lighting) on his way to Damascus, the event was a turning point in his life and he effectively became an ambassador of Christ. There is no evidence that Joyce Mujuru was converted, the Joyce Mujuru of yesterday is the same Joyce Mujuru of today. Some may want to argue that she saw God’s lighting the morning when the copse her husband Solomon Mujuru was found  in a house that he grabbed from the former white commercial farmer. However, there is no evidence to support the claim because the media did not report on such an event.

Number Four – Saul changed his name to Paul soon after the conversion and he saw God. Saul apologized before the world and God. Instead of apologizing before the Zimbabweans, Joyce Mujuru is even refusing to admit her evil role in ZANU PF government during the moment of madness. She claimed that she was not responsible for all atrocities committed by ZANU PF. Joyce Mujuru should learn from Saul in order for her to become the biblical Saul.

Joyce Mujuru is similar to the biblical Judas Iscariot because of her love of free and corrupt wealth. The MDC-T should be careful, having coalition with such persons is like a coalition between Satan and God.

The results of the just ended Bikita election exposed the political weakness of Joyce Mujuru. She was advised to push for reforms before the election but she refused the advise. Her party was humiliated and she cannot be a trusted flag bearer. There is no evidence to support the claim that Joyce Mujuru has strong support base in Zimbabwe. Even if elections are to be held today, ZANU PF will win because the electoral process is not even.

While in London, Joyce Mujuru declared that she would contest against ZANU PF ‘with or without’ reforms because she thought, venturing into politics is a romantic affair. Just like what happened to Saul on his way to Damascus, what happened to Mujuru in Bikita by-election should teach her a great lesson in politics. I once said that only God and ZANU PF know the electoral processes in Zimbabwe and I thought that Mujuru was listening.

Mujuru and the rest of the opposition parties should concentrate on electoral reforms even at the cost of blood. Time is ticking away and the opposition has nothing to offer on electoral reforms. MDC-T should not concentrate much on Mujuru coalition, they should focus on election reforms. Even if MDC-T is to have a strong coalition with Jesus Christ, they will still loose election to ZANU PF thieves. Mujuru is there to disturb MDC-T’s focus on electoral reforms and that is how ZANU PF project works.

MDC Response to Anti-Coalition Sentiments

Kurauone Chihwayi | The basic argument of the anti coalition individuals is patently false. There is no opposition party which has all the seats let alone all the votes in the Southern Provinces of the country. As of today ZANU PF holds all the 13 seats in Matabeleland South. So where is the 100 percent victory there? ZANU PF holds 6 of the 10 seats in Matabeleland North. Again where is the 100 percent? Even in Bulawayo where the MDCT won all the seats in 2013 in terms of vote counts the MDC had 20 967 votes and ZANU PF polled a total of 30 290 votes. Again where is the 100 per cent?

The 2008 elections taught us that when we do not act wisely and in the national interest we can snatch defeat from the jaws of victory. Those responsible for prevailing on others to walk away from the 2008 coalition agreement need be careful that they are not seen today to be working against the clear public sentiment that we must all do everything in our power to give the people of this country a fighting chance to remove the ruinous ZANU PF regime from power in 2018.

Notwithstanding the brickbates thrown at us, the MDC remains committed to working with all those willing to work with others to build the broadest coalition possible against ZANU PF. The votes that will count the most are the votes for the coalition Presidential candidate who must garner every possible vote to reach the 50% plus one threshold required in our law.

We would have thought that some basic common sense understanding will reveal to anyone involved in our politics that winning Parliamentary seats in whatever parts of the country and in whatever quantities is wholly irrelevant to the primary question of garnering the requisite number of votes for the Presidential candidate which is what is required to cause a change of government.

BLOOD ON FLOOR: As Mugabe’s Health Takes A Tumble, Zanu PF Factions Ready To Knife Each Other At Special Congress

Ray Nkosi | There is blood on the floor as Zanu PF factions go into another deadly final showdown.

There are media reports that President Robert Mugabe’s health has taken another tumble, with his ruling Zanu PF party gearing for a special congress to appoint his successor, before he closes his eyes forever.

This is another opportune moment for the warring factions in the party, one led by Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa and another aligned to Mugabe’s wife Grace, to either find a middle way out through a compromise or one of them is totally vanquished from the political scene.Analysis

Indications in other reports are that Mugabe who has been away on leave, will in his typical Machiavellian fashion out of political expediency to save his young wife Grace, soon engineer a cabinet reshuffle which will decimate Mnangagwa’s faction and powers weakening him in the succession war matrix, ahead of the Congress. Mugabe has special powers to do what he wants with Zanu PF out of Congress.

Mugabe also has a way of silencing internal dissent as was shown at the last Zanu PF conference in Masvingo when he all but silenced internal opposition. Party leaders went to the conference deeply divided as they tore into each other, but came out subdued, with an emboldened Mugabe telling the party structures, “We came with grievances. We put our heads together. We came here knowing there were issues. Now we have to go back to our provinces and stop bickering. Lets stop fighting among each other. Let us follow the party’s constitution.”

“We are happy that this conference went well. There was no bickering. That is what we call THE ZANU PF way. I am happy that this was a very peaceful conference, there was no fighting or name calling at all….This is the Zanu-PF way . Ndatenda, ndatenda, ndatenda. Ndatenda kusingaperi,” Mugabe said as he closed the conference in Masvingo.

Meanwhile, a local weekly paper The Independent, reports that ZANU PF is likely to hold an extraordinary congress this year which will either confirm Mugabe as the party’s candidate in next year’s presidential election or elect a new leader amid revelations the nonagenarian’s health is fast deteriorating as shown by his recent holiday shuttles to Singapore for medical attention.

The Zimbabwe Independent yesterday confirmed from the state-of-the-art Gleneagles Hospital and Medical Centre in Singapore that Mugabe visited the facility during the festive season.

“The President of Zimbabwe came here a couple of times for medical attention in December and last month,” a doctor at the hospital told the Independent this week. “He set to back for reviews and further attention.”

Officials said that due to the veteran leader’s worsening health woes, the two main factions in the party — one led by Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the G40 group which has coalesced around First Lady Grace Mugabe — want an extraordinary congress this year for different reasons.

“The Mnangagwa faction wants the extraordinary congress so that a new party leader may be chosen before elections next year, while the G40 faction is praying that Mugabe is strong enough to stand because they don’t have a candidate. The G40 faction also wants vice-presidents be elected so that Mnangagwa may be removed from his position,” a senior Zanu PF leader said.

Insiders said the Mnangagwa faction is confident that Mugabe will not be able to stand for elections because of old age and deteriorating health, and hence the need for a special congress.

The faction also believes an extraordinary congress at which Mnangagwa would be catapulted into leadership is in their interest as it ensures he becomes a shoo-in for the presidency. They fear that if Mugabe wins elections, he would purge his ambitious deputy and puts someone.

Sources said Mnangagwa’s team, which includes Zimbabwe Defence Forces commander General Constantine Chiwenga and State Security minister Kembo Mohadi as vice-presidents, is pushing for Mugabe to go before the end of the year to allow the new leader to prepare for elections.

Sources said there could be changes, however, as some of his backers believe the team could be seen as too militant, reinforcing widely held views that Mnangagwa is a strongman. This has led to the possible inclusion of Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa, who is seen as reformist and has good relations with multilateral institutions, as deputy president.

Mnangagwa is also said to be entertaining dialogue with Zapu leader Dumiso Dabengwa to come in as his other deputy, although officials say there is little chance that the former Zipra intelligence supremo will agree given their personal animosity towards each other due to the Gukurahundi detention and killings. Dabengwa was a victim of detention and torture in the 1980s when Mnangagwa state security minister until 1988.

Zimbabwe Democracy Institute director Pedzisayi Ruhanya, in an article titled Zimbabwe Probable Scenarios and Possible Outcomes: 2017 and Beyond, said the most likely scenario “but also the worst-case scenario” is where Mugabe is in charge throughout the period under consideration.

“It is essentially a status quo scenario, but marked by the intensification of the ongoing governance maladies in both the party and government with the attendant policy incoherence and even immobilism,” he said. “At a practical level, however, and given Mugabe’s advanced age and increasing frailty, he is not likely to have the physical and mental stamina to be fully and always in charge. This is actually already happening and will be accelerated during this period. In a way, by the end of the period, it will resemble the ‘wheelchair scenario’ where Mugabe will be governing from a wheelchair. This is what both the First Lady and war veterans alluded to in November last year.”

Ruhanya said there was also a possibility of Mugabe standing and winning elections before serving until the party’s 2019 congress where he retires and anoints a successor.

“The successor is most likely to be a compromise figure, that is, neither G40 nor Lacoste, but someone accepted (or at least not hated) by both. This will mean the status quo will continue until 2019 and then the successor takes over. Given that Mugabe will still be alive, though progressively unwell, the successor will tread carefully, only making incremental changes especially in the economic arena, by seeking to normalise the situation,” he said.
Ruhanya said there was also a possibility that Mugabe would die in office anytime.

“This is a State House-to-Heroes Acre scenario and, should this happen, whether before or after elections, the chief beneficiary is most likely to be Vice-President Emmerson Mnangagwa,” he said. zimbabwe independent

Mugabe ‘Death’ Prophet Missing | LATEST

Pastor Patrick Mugadza, who was arrested for prophesying that President Robert Mugabe would die this year on the 17th of October has failed to appear in court. Below is a statement by activist Linda Masarira.

https://youtu.be/LZ_h9VCeAkk?t=10

Linda Masarira |This regime strives on frustrating activists. We waited for Pastor Patrick Mugadza at Rotten row magistrates in the morning and he was nowhere to be found until we were told that prisons has no fuel so no prisoners are coming to court. My mind rushed back to the days when I was in prison and missed nearly 6 court remand dates because there was no fuel.

With my colleagues Nasper Manyau, Mandowa Manezho, Sten Zvorwadza and Makomborero we decided to go to remand prison and enquire why they were denying Pastor Mugadza access to the courts. It is not his fault that ZPS has no fuel and the weird part is when we were at remand prison the court truck left for court with three prisoners.

At prison we were initially denied to give Pastor Mugadza food we had bought for him. They said they were only accepting bread and not sadza from outside because of the cholera and typhoid outbreak. Ironically sadza they cook outside the gate prepared by prisoners is apparently safe enough and can be bought and given to remand prisoners.

We made noise demanding to see their health licence as we had bought sadza at Montague Spar with a food health licence. The Officer In Charge then requested for the receipt and allowed for the food to go through.

Now the court truck is here at rotten row magistrates court and Mugadza is not there? Is this the states way of frustrating activists? We shall respond don’t push us to the limits.

Gillian Died Of Head Injuries

A mum-of-four who was found dead in a car outside a Lidl supermarket had died from head injuries, a post mortem has revealed.

Gillian Zvomuya was discovered outside the Kitts Green branch of Lidl in Mackadown Lane at around 4.45am on Monday.

Police initially said the victim died as a result of stab injuries, but a post portem examination has revealed that she died from head injuries. However, police confirmed that Mrs Zvomuya also suffered injuries from a “bladed article” in the attack.

Tributes have been paid to Gillian, who has not been officially named by police as the victim.

Posting a tribute on Facebook, one of her friends said: “I am still in shock. I can’t believe u are gone. Why, why, what about the kids?

“May you (sic) soul rest in peace my friend. God has taken one of his angel. What a way to die.”

Another friend posted on Facebook: “RIP Gillian…gone so soon …so shocked and hurt.”

Police initially said the victim was attacked with a “bladed weapon” and pronounced dead at the scene.

“Tragically the woman was pronounced dead at the scene and the man was arrested on suspicion of her murder.

“While her identity is yet to be confirmed, at this stage we believe her to be the arrested man’s wife.”

Detectives also examined the couple’s home and spoke to neighbours and obtained CCTV footage. – Birmingaham Mail

2 Missing As Floods Wreck Havoc In Lupane

Villagers in Ward 19 in Lupane are still searching for two people that went missing after the 8-tonne truck they were travelling in was swept away as it crossed a flooded river.

The incident occurred around 5pm this Thursday (yesterday).

According to some of the people that were in the truck, the driver missed the bridge and the truck hit pillars before it over turned.

The 10 passengers that were at the back of the truck then jumped off and some were rescued, with injuries and taken to St. Lukes Hospital for treatment.

There are fears that the two missing people could have been killed by crocodiles and children have stopped going to school until the water levels drop.

Members of the police sub-aqua unit and the civil protection unit are still to attend to the incident.

Meanwhile, villagers this morning assisted a pregnant woman in labour to cross the flooded Bubi River to St. Lukes Hospital for delivery. – State Media

Mugabe Under Fresh Scrutiny As Top UK Envoy Visits

A top UK envoy began a two-day visit in Zimbabwe on Monday to gauge its progress in its re-engagement with the international community and assess the human rights situation, a rare visit by a top UK Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) leader in a decade.

Karen Pierce, UK FCO chief operating officer, is expected to press Zimbabwe to adhere to its international commitments under the Lima Plan.

Zimbabwe’s Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa last year proposed an arrears repayment plan at the IMF/WB annual meetings in Lima in Peru where consensus was reached with creditors on a repayment strategy which entailed the clearance of the country’s $1,8 billion arrears.

Britain, Germany, France, US and others are part of the Paris Club — a forum where Zimbabwe’s debt to the international financial institutions (IFIs) is discussed and agreementis reached on how to manage that ballooning debt.

While in Zimbabwe, Karen, the most senior FCO visitor to Zimbabwe for several years, will meet with influential Zimbabwean women and representatives of the business community, as well as a call on the deputy Foreign minister Edgar Mbwembwe and members of the opposition. During her visit, Pierce — who has previously served as ambassador in Afghanistan, ambassador to the UN in Geneva and deputy permanent representative to the UN in New York – will gain more insight into the operations of the British Mission in Zimbabwe.

“We are excited to be hosting one of the FCO’s most senior officials and to share with her some of our successes as the Britain Mission in Zimbabwe,” UK Ambassador to Zimbabwe Catriona Laing said yesterday.

“She will also have a chance to meet with the business community, learn about the British Mission’s impact on Zimbabwe’s development and meet government and opposition figures. “Karen’s visit is particularly important because the UK, driven by our manifesto commitment to stand up for human rights and the rule of law, wants to see Zimbabwe return to a more normal relationship with the international community.”

Presently, multilateral financial institutions are barred by law from extending loans to Zimbabwe because of outstanding debts. Clearance of the arrears is anticipated to pave way for lines of new capital.

Zimbabwe — saddled with an external debt of over $7 billion — has just settled the IMF’s $124 million in arrears accrued since 2000, but still owes another $600 000 to the AfDB while an additional $1 billion is characterised as WB debt.

To honour these arrears, Zimbabwe is borrowing from the Afrexim Bank in Egypt while it clear the IMF arrears by drawing rights of about $130 million from the Breton Woods institution.

Relations between the UK and Zimbabwe have moved to a new level in the past two years as London seeks to revive relations with a key ally in southern Africa, but the socialist nation’s zero-tolerance approach to its detractors remains a sticking point.

The UK has been intensifying efforts in building stronger ties with Zimbabwe in reducing poverty, helping in health, education, environment, energy and recently has been giving cash transfers to help the most vulnerable, including older people, vulnerable children and people with disabilities — to boost its influence.

Through the Department for International Development (DFID), the UK has also made an additional £40 million contribution resulting in a total contribution of £55,6 million ($73,3 million) to Zimbabwe’s drought mitigation.

Diplomatic ties between the UK and Zimbabwe soured during the turn of the century over charges that President Robert Mugabe’s ruling Zanu PF party had rigged elections and used violence to cling to power.

Mugabe, Africa’s oldest leader who has held power since independence in 1980, insists London treats Zimbabwe as its colony and seeks to maintain influence in the mineral-rich country. British conglomerates have also divested from Zimbabwe during the 2000-2008 period at the height of an economic crisis, put off by Britain’s frosty ties with its former colony after Mugabe’s often-violent grab of commercial farms belonging to white farmers. – Daily News

Racism, Patriotism, Republican – Where Do We Draw The Line?

By Patience Rashai | During the first Presidential debate night, the Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton asked viewers to remember that her opponent had started his career with a 1973 lawsuit brought against him by the Justice Department; “because he would not rent apartments in one of his developments to African-Americans, and he made sure that the people who worked for him understood that was the policy.”

Today Trump’s yester activities come into question, what really was his policy then and worse off now that he is the United States President. His approach begs the question, is Trump a racist? And how safe are Muslims, Africans, African-Americans, Homosexuals, Immigrants, Refugees, from Trump’s wrath?

Trump is a republican harboring the American conservatism ideology, which opposes the former modern liberalism. The Republicans Party’s platform involves support for free market capitalism, free enterprise, fiscal conservatism, a strong national defense, deregulation, and restrictions on labour unions. In addition to advocating for conservative economic policies, the Republican Party also thrives on social conservative (particularly in its opposition to abortion and same sex marriage), and seeks to uphold traditional values.

These virtues best describes a republican, something which Trump is eager to uphold!

Last Friday, hardly a fortnight after his inauguration, President Trump released a statement barring immigrants from seven Muslim – majority countries namely: Iraq, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia, and Yemen, from entering the United States for at least the next 90 days.

He also went ahead to suspend the United States Refugee Programme for 120 days, specifically banning Syrian refugees until further notice. He further reduced the number of refugees to be admitted to the States this year to 50 000 from 110 000 and specified that refugees from religious minority and fleeing religious persecution should be prioritized above everything else.

Why would he ban immigrants for the next ninety days? Isn’t this a trial balloon lick to taste the waters and assess how the world will react to his move before permanently barring these other minority states that have nothing to offer to America without justification?

Another point to note is that the new Trump policy seems to persecute Muslims and not Christians; clearly this is a case of religious persecution guised as an effort to make the United States a safer hub.

Trump should have a moral obligation to at least uphold his nation’s rule of law and observe The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965 which outlawed discrimination of immigrants based on national origin.

Clearly Trump’s policy is a deviation from the mindset on the meaning of human rights which America is forever preaching to Zimbabwe as they continue justifying their move on the imposed illegal sanctions on our land.

After all, is seclusion of other states guarantee for America’s safety from terrorism or this move is merely Trump’s way of reaffirming American dominance over other smaller nations?

Notably though is the fact that President Trump’s ban isn’t ostensibly based on security concerns as he proclaims. The ban surprisingly excludes countries such as Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Pakistan, whose citizens have been responsible for some of the most serious terrorist plots against the United States since 2001. The truth is that these countries are difficult to push around since they either pose a threat to America or America stands to benefit something from them. Pakistan has nuclear weapons, Saudi Arabia is a major source of oil, and the United Arab Emirates is a major source of investment by Americans.

Reports have it that Trump’s company has a golf club in Dubai and a possible hotel venture in Saudi Arabia, how convenient!

Zimbabwe’s former Permanent Representative to the United Nations Mission in New York, Boniface Chidyausiku was also quoted criticizing this discrimination of nationals.

“Discrimination of nationals on the basis of religion or other grounds is inhumane in this 21st century and building of walls against other nations does not work as we now live in an interconnected global village” he said.

This is just but the beginning of Trump and American hypocrisy. Since time immemorial, Americans have been well known for bulldozing their way through smaller states.

Who then will school America, or the world is just going to be on halt awaiting American hegemony to be imparted as the pace setter for the rest of the world to blindly follow.

Where are human rights and democracy?

Mnangagwa Fired Any Time

The new Zanu PF constitutional arrangements allow President Robert Mugabe to fire his deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa at any time. Mnangagwa’s future in Zanu PF hangs in the balance, as his boss starts a cabinet reshuffling process.

The local weekly paper The Independent reports that Mugabe, who effectively started work on Wednesday this week when he chaired a cabinet meeting, is mulling a reshuffle that might see Mnangagwa losing control of the Ministry of Justice and several ministers shunted around or removed.

Senior government officials told the Independent this week that several ministers could be affected by the reshuffle, which is expected to take place in the first quarter of the year. The reshuffle would be informed by the state of the economy, performance by ministers, factional realignments and succession considerations, among other issues.

Officials said Mugabe was eager to realign the balance of forces within Zanu PF and government so that he reasserts control in the wake of the ever-intensifying succession battles, which are causing conflict and fragmentation ahead of next year’s elections.

Officials say he is also worried about the state of the economy ahead of general elections next year. Poor performance by several cabinet ministers is also said to be of grave concern to Mugabe.

“The biggest casualty might be Mnangagwa, who is likely to lose control of the justice ministry although he will retain the vice-presidency. He will also continue overseeing the ministries under his purview,” a senior government official said. “Former Justice deputy minister Fortune Chasi is being considered as a candidate to take over the ministry.”
Chasi was fired from government in December 2014 for supporting former vice-president Joice Mujuru’s ambitions to succeed Mugabe.

He was a subject of vitriolic attacks by First Lady Grace Mugabe during her “meet-the-people” rallies which set the stage for Mujuru’s ouster and unprecedented purges of her
supporters.

Chais has however made peace with the First Lady and attended some of her rallies.

Government officials said while there are many factors which spurred Mugabe to contemplate removing Mnangagwa from the Justice ministry, the trigger is the fallout over Chief Justice Godfrey Chidyausiku’s succession.

Mugabe is reportedly not happy Mnangagwa clandestinely put Chidyausiku on early retirement and appointed Judge President George Chiweshe – his ally and favourite candidate – as acting chief justice without his knowledge.

Mnangagwa also fuelled the crisis yesterday when he challenged the shortlist, which includes Deputy Chief Justice Luke Malaba, Justice Rita Makarau and Justice Paddington Garwe, given to Mugabe by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) to appoint Chidyausiku’s successor from.

Grace and her faction want Makarau as the next chief justice.

Chiweshe was appointed acting CJ notwithstanding the fact that Section 181(1) of the constitution states “if the office of Chief Justice is vacant or if the office holder is unable to perform the functions of the office, the Deputy Chief Justice acts in his or her place, but if both offices are unable to perform their functions, the next most senior judge of the Constitutional Court acts as Chief Justice”.

Chidyausiku, seen by some as a stumbling block to Mnangagwa’s succession ambitions, left under intense pressure and slipped away for about two months until he met Mugabe by chance at a funeral and bounced back.

Mugabe asked Chidyausiku about his work, but was shocked to learn that he was no longer at work purportedly in line with a directive from the executive. Mugabe then ordered Chidyausiku to report back for work. If he stripped of the Justice ministry, Mnangagwa will remain in charge of the tourism, mining, agriculture, public service, higher education, sports and small and medium enterprises ministries.

Sources said ministers likely to be moved from their current portfolios include Mines minister Walter Chidhakwa, Energy minister Samuel Undenge, Indeginisation minister Patrick Zhuwao, Higher Education minister Jonathan Moyo, Tourism minister Walter Muzembi and Information minister Christopher Mushohwe.

Mugabe is also reportedly not happy with the lacklustre performance of War Veterans minister Tshinga Dube, Psychomotor minister Josiah Hungwe and Rural Development minister Abednico Ncube. Dube has presided war veterans’ revolt against Mugabe’s leadership.

The sources said Moyo could be moved the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund saga under investigation by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and the need to take him back to resuscitate the dysfunctional Information ministry ahead of elections.

Mushohwe is being criticised internally largely because of complaints that under his tenure the public media has been captured and become factional. There have been complains about this in cabinet.

Although he is related to the president, Chidhakwa is said to be under fire because of the fiasco surrounding the consolidation of diamond mining companies. The plunge in mining revenues, especially from diamonds, since Chidhakwa took over the ministry is a major cause for concern to his boss.

At their peak diamond mining companies contributed about US$50 million a month to Treasury, but the new Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company is now contributing a paltry sum of less than US$100 000 a month. Officials also said there was a likelihood former mines minister Obert Mpofu could make a return to the ministry, although his tenure was marred by allegations of corruption and looting.

“Undenge could be moved because of the scandals at Zesa where he was fingered in a series of dodgy deals, while Mzembi could be on the way out as there is a feeling he is looking for a way to jump ship,” one official said.

Mzembi is campaigning to become the United Nations World Tourism Organisation secretary-general.

Mugabe is also reportedly unhappy with how his nephew Zhuwao has been handling indigenisation issues.

Although there was talk last year that Finance minister Patrick Chinamasa could be replaced by former Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor Gideon Gono, government officials said Mugabe was content with him as he spears the Lima re-engagement plan.

Other ministers who are likely to continue in their current positions include Transport minister Joram Gumbo, Home Affairs minister Ignatius Chombo, Local Government minister Saviour Kasukuwere, Information Communication Technology minister Supa Mandiwanzira and Sports minister Makhosini Hlongwane. Defence minister Sydney Sekeramayi is also likely to remain in his position, they said.

If the reshuffle goes ahead, it will be the third time since he controversially won elections in 2013. In 2014, he reshuffled cabinet after axing Mujuru and several ministers over unproven allegations of plotting his ouster and assassination.

In his last reshuffle in September 2015, Mugabe, under pressure from the Mnangagwa faction, moved Moyo from the Information ministry to Higher Education. The Mnangagwa accused Moyo of abusing the media to attack and denigrate the vice-president.

Government officials said Mugabe wanted to reshuffle cabinet last year, but stopped after being advised that frequent changes would give an impression that he was at sea over what to do.

“The need to improve government ahead of the elections and the desire to reassert control and manage the succession dynamics ahead of the elections will however force him into a reshuffle this time around,” another official said. – Independent

Shock As Archbishop of Canterbury’s ‘Delightful’ Friend Accused of Killing Teenager in Zimbabwe

A former friend of the Archbishop of Canterbury who left Britain amidst child abuse claims was later charged with killing a teenage boy in Zimbabwe.

Hampshire Police yesterday launched an investigation into claims that John Smyth QC, described by the Most Rev Justin Welby as a “charming and delightful” man, forced young men to endure savage sado-masochistic beatings after grooming them at Christian holiday camps in the late Seventies.

Channel 4 News will tonight report that Mr Smyth, who left Britain after the abuse claims emerged, went on to face charges of killing a 16-year-old boy who was found dead in a swimming pool at a Zimbabwean holiday camp.

The barrister was also accused of swimming naked with Zimbabwean teenagers, showering with them in the nude, and encouraging them to talk about masturbation.

One alleged victim told the broadcaster that Mr Smyth administered savage beatings with wooden bats, in a chilling echo of the allegations made against him in Britain.

Mr Smyth, 75, was the head of the Christian charity the Iwerne Trust in the late Seventies, when he ran holiday camps for boys from elite public schools that were also attended by the Archbishop.

On Tuesday Archbishop Welby issued an “unreserved and unequivocal” apology after it emerged that the barrister and part-time judge had not been forwarded to police after the British abuse claims were reported to the Christian charity in 1982.

Mr Smyth moved to Zimbabwe in 1984, where he founded Zambesi Ministries, which recruited boys from that nation’s leading schools to take part in holidays similar to the Iwerne camps.

In 1997 he was arrested over claims that he had killed Guide Nyachuru, a 16-year-old boy whose body was discovered at the bottom of the camp’s swimming pool in December 1992. The case of culpable homicide was subsequently dismissed.

He also faced charges of injuring the dignity of five other boys who said they had been subjected to savage beatings.

Court documents from the time state: “The particular allegations are that [Mr Smyth] made the complainants walk naked to the swimming pool at night; that he took showers with them in the nude; that he talked to them about masturbation and told them to be proud of their ‘dicks’; as Jesus Christ had one; and that he assaulted them on their ‘rear bare buttocks’ with a table tennis bat.”

The case against Mr Smyth collapsed in 1998, after he successfully persuaded Zimbabwe’s Supreme Court that prosecutors had overstated the claims and failed to follow proper procedures.

A lawyer involved in the case told The Telegraph he had been “shocked” after the barrister privately admitted showering with the boys, and said he had warned Mr Smyth to stop.

Channel 4 News has tracked down boys who attended the camps, who insist that the allegations are true.

Rocky Leanders, one teenage camper, said Mr Smyth had encouraged boys to talk about masturbation and told them to “just feel free to embrace your body and love your body”.

He told the broadcaster the barrister told the boys to swim naked, adding: “John took part in the activity. He certainly went in the pool. He was at various places throughout still naked, watching that we all went out and all came back in.”

Later the boys claimed they were subjected to beatings with a table tennis bat and a jokari, another type of wooden racquet. Mr Leanders said he recalled one boy being beaten so hard that the table tennis bat broke. He said: “I remember I could barely sit down because my bum cheek was so sore.”

Mr Nyachuru’s sister, Edith, said that had Church authorities reported Mr Smyth to the police in Britain in 1982, “my brother wouldn’t meet the fate he met”.

Approached by Cathy Newman, the Channel 4 newsreader, Mr Smyth said Mr Nyachuru’s death was “a very unfortunate drowning incident”.

He said he had not left Britain because of abuse claims, but because “God called us to Zimbabwe”.

The Archbishop yesterday pledged to co-operate fully with a police investigation into his former friend.

In an interview yesterday, he repeated his “unreserved and unequivocal” apology to the alleged victims. He insisted he had “never heard anything at all” about the abuse claims, and had never encountered beatings in his religious life.

It has emerged that two friends of the Archbishop have known of the abuse claims since they first came to light, although a spokesman said neither informed him of the allegations.

A 1982 report into the claims, commissioned by the Iwerne Trust, was carried out by Mark Ruston, the vicar of the Round Church in Cambridge, with whom the Archbishop lodged during the late Seventies, in his final year at university.

The Archbishop has said his friendship with the Reverend Ruston was “extraordinary privilege” and he was “inspired” by him.

A second friend of the Archbishop, the Reverend David Fletcher, was the trustee of the Iwerne Trust who led the investigation into the incidents.

Rev Fletcher opted not to pass the claims to police. He said: “My top priority was that John Smyth should be stopped and second that the men he beat were cared for.”

A spokesman for the Archbishop said he “has not seen the Rev David Fletcher more than once or twice casually since the late 1980s”.

More Mugabe Birthday Bash Humiliation

Ray Nkosi | The ZANU PF national youth leadership has attacked the Matabeleland South provincial organising committee of the 21st February Movement, for falling under public pressure, by moving the venue of President Robert Mugabe’s 93rd birthday celebrations from its original site at Matopo National Park to Rhodes Estate Primary School.

Very reliable sources within the provincial organising committee told ZimEye.com in confidence that the national youth committee led by Kudzai Chipanga blasted the provincial organisers, describing them as being spineless at a briefing before the national committee met with the provincial committee to check on the progress in the preparations for the $2 million bash.

The sources claim that Chipanga and his colleagues in the youth National Executive Committee said that it was a serious weakness on the side of the local team to bow to pressure groups who were castigating ZANU PF for holding the bash at the park where thousands of people killed during the Gukurahundi atrocities of the eighties effected by ZANU PF lie buried in shallow graves and disused mine shafts.

The upset sources who are in the provincial organising committee claim that the mood in the organising team is very tense as there are clear factional fights within the team. The people who are said to have fronted the shift of the venue are said to be linked to the Emerson Munangagwa camp and pushed for the change of venue at the summit of the preparations to first exhibit a rare weakness within ZANU PF and secondly to distract the preparations and spoil the function.

The sources also claim that Chipanga and his crew further blasted the committee for moving the venue from the perceived Gukurahundi site to a colonialism depicting site inside Cecil John Rhode’s Estate.

At the progress review meeting Chipanga is further said to have told the local organising committee which had complained of shortage of funds to “go out to every business person in the province and get money from them.”

The provincial committee is said to have promised to visit fiery Minister of Provincial Affairs for the province Abednico Ncube to get a letter signed by him demanding for donations from the business people. According to the sources a hurried fund raising dinner will also be held in Gwanda within the next few days where business people will be forced to buy expensive dinner tables to raise funds.

The sources further revealed that so far local ZANU PF farmers recently resettled in the province have been pushed to contribute a total of 66 head of cattle of a budgeted 100 which will all be slaughtered at the birthday bash set for February 25.

Mugabe Ditched By Chief

Terrence Mawawa, Chivhu | Prominent Traditional leader, Chief Mutekedza has been threatened by state security agents for inviting Zim PF members to a meeting he chaired.

Chief Mtekedza also invited Zim PF supporters to his Zunde Ramambo project.

The move did not augur well with members of the dreaded Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) who warned him to desist from associating with Mujuru’s party. Zanu PF is panicking after it emerged traditional leaders are deserting the ruling party to work with Mujuru’s party.

Despite factional battles rocking Zim PF the party has gained ground in many rural constituencies. Sources told ZimEye.com Zanu PF Provincial Chair for Mash East,Bernard Makokove assigned CIO operatives to investigate Chief Mtekedza. Chikomba Central MP Felix Mhona also warned the Chief to distance himself from Zim PF programmes. A defiant Chief Mtekedza said he would continue to work with all villagers in his area regardless of their political affiliation.

“I am a traditional leader and I have to work with all people despite their political differences.I cannot stop the villagers from participating in the Zunde Ramambo Project,” said Chief Mtekedza.

He added:”I am very bitter and I want Mhona to apologise to me.I am not of afraid of some individuals who are threatening me.I will not stop people from doing voluntary work because of political affiliation.” Traditional leaders have played a leading role in campaigning for Zanu PF and Mugabe.

Econet Defies ZSE, As EGM Goes Ahead

Econet Wireless says its extraordinary general meeting to consider a proposed $130 million capital raise will go ahead as planned on Friday, setting itself on a collision course with the Zimbabwe Stock Exchange which directed the company to postpone it until ‘certain technical issues’ are clarified.

The rights issue has generated some controversy largely due to its requirement that shareholders pay abroad to subscribe, a move that analysts say would disadvantage pension funds and other minorities who might not be able to follow their rights.

Econet says it needs to raise the cash offshore to pay off its external debt, which it has increasingly struggled to amortise due to Zimbabwe’s foreign currency crisis.

ZSE chair Caroline Sandura said in a statement issued late on Wednesday the bourse asked Econet to defer its vote on the transaction.
But Econet countered with its own statement in which it said it had, along with the central bank, put up a facility to allow local shareholders to participate in the rights offer.

It said a rights offer account has been opened with Econet’s wholly-owned subsidiary Steward Bank, where local shareholders would deposit the proceeds of the rights offer in accordance with the timetable published in the company’s circular dated 17 January 2017.
The underwriter, Econet Global, will pay the equivalent of the amount contributed by the resident shareholder to the international receiving bank, Afreximbank.

“Those resident shareholders who follow their rights by paying into the designated local account shall be deemed as having discharged their obligations as set out in the Rights Offer Circular and shall be entitled to the issue and allotment of their Rights Offer shares,” said Econet.

“In the circumstances, members are advised that the extraordinary general meeting shall proceed as published in the circular,” it added, saying members should disregard “any notice to the contrary not coming from the company.”

ZSE’s Sandura is yet to respond to the latest move by Econet. – Sources

Chinamasa Rules Out Rand Adoption

Government will not adopt the South African rand, nor will it reintroduce the Zimbabwe dollar until macro-economic fundamentals are addressed, legislators heard yesterday.

Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa said it was not prudent for the Government to adopt the rand as its official currency when it had no control over its exchange rate.

Minister Chinamasa said this in the National Assembly while responding to concerns by lawmakers during a debate on the Finance Bill.

The Bill seeks to give legal effect on several fiscal measures he announced in the 2017 National Budget.

Dangamvura Chikanga MP Cde Esau Mupfumi (zanu-pf) had implored Government to use the rand and the local unit.

“On the currency issue, we are not going to adopt the rand because we are not involved in the decision making of its value, whether it depreciates or appreciates,” said Minister Chinamasa.

“If it appreciates, we become the most expensive country. The route we are taking is that we are working on addressing macro-economic fundamentals such as raising exports, increasing reserves like three months cover and so on. We will not reintroduce our own currency until we address these fundamentals.”

Glen Norah MP Mr Webster Maondera (MDC-T) complained about the hiking of the level of fines for various crimes, saying it fuelled corruption, especially at police roadblocks.

Mr Maondera said it was not prudent to raise funds at a time when several people were struggling to make ends meet.

He said there was no money in bank,s making it difficult to pay the fines.

Minister Chinamasa said it was strange that legislators were against measures Government was taking to combat crime.

“These are people breaching the law,” he said.

“You must be on my side and not on the side of those breaching the law and say ‘No do not touch them,’ and yet you are legislators, we should be putting our heads together.”

Minister Chinamasa castigated lawmakers complaining about several levies and taxes being imposed on people, saying if Government did not do that, it would not be able to provide services, including paying salaries.

“Do not protect sources of taxes,” he said. “Citizens’ first obligation is to pay taxes so that you can sustain your Government for it to pay for education, health and all that you are complaining, that it is being underfunded.

“Who should I tax? I cannot tax foreigners, but whoever is earning, that is the thing we need to understand.”

Meanwhile, Speaker of the National Assembly Advocate Jacob Mudenda warned legislators against creating a quorum crisis because they would have walked out of the Chamber.

He said they had a constitutional duty to discharge in Parliament. – State Media

Mawarire Arrested, But Will The Charges Stick?

Nomusa Garikayi | When President Mugabe denounce Pastor Evans Mawarire as a “man of cloth” worshipping “dog” he must have thought then that Mawarire had turned tail and left Zimbabwe for good and he, Robert Gabriel Mugabe, was having the final word on the matter!

“So beware these men of cloth, not all of them are true preachers of the Bible. I don’t know whether they are serving God. They spell God in reverse,” said Mugabe, six months ago. “The Mawarires, if they don’t like to live with us, let them go to those who are sponsoring them, to the countries that are sponsoring them.”

Those were very harsh words; even those of us who know Mugabe to be corrupt and murderous tyrant given to speaking harshly even when there is no need for it, were taken aback by the harshness of those words. After all what crime had Pastor Mawarire and his #ThisFlag followers committed; voicing their concern about the misrule and corruption that had left millions out of work and destitute is should not be a crime. In Mugabe’s Zimbabwe that is a very serious crime as others like Itai Dzamara, who was abducted never to be seen again, would readily testify.

Mugabe must have spoken those harsh words to remind all those Mawarire had inspired to join in the street protest that swept the country like grass fires of what happened to Itai Dzamara could happen to them too. As for Pastor Mawarire, Mugabe was convinced he roughing up he got had scared him to turn tail and run never to comeback.

The big story is that Pastor Mawarire has returned to Zimbabwe!

“Zimbabwe is home for me and my family. That’s the place where we have a right to be without acquiring a visa, we are citizens of Zimbabwe,” Mawarire told the reporter, Simon Allison.

“The president of Zimbabwe made comments to the effect that I was not welcome in Zimbabwe, but he doesn’t get to make that decision for me. I have not committed a crime, I’m not a fugitive, I’m a citizen, and an upstanding citizen for that matter.”

Old age has taken its toll on President Mugabe; forget all the macho talk him being “as fit as a fiddle”. Physically, he has shrivelled up; no amount of Botox body-filler can hide the fact there is little of the original frame left to hang it on. Mentally, old age has turned Mugabe from Grumpy into the character Sleepy, in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. He now dozes off at the drop of a hat; even when he is standing up!

The news that Pastor Evans Mawarire was coming back to Zimbabwe must have forced Mugabe to sit bolt up and to stay wide-awake for many hours!

Of course, the authorities arrest Pastor Mawarire when he landed at Harare International Airport; after all the grandstanding and harsh words from Mugabe; they had no choice but arrest him or lose face. Now the tyrant has to come up with a charge serious enough to make punishment worth the regime’s while (nothing short of five-year jail term will do) and make the charge stick!

“He has been charged with subverting a constitutionally elected government,” Mawarire’s attorney, Harrison Nkomo, told VOA. “The same charges as last time [following his July protest]. I do not know what they are trying to do, so we will deal with it when we get to court”

The standard charge serious charge against his critics and opponents is for Mugabe to accuse them of plotting to assassinate him; that is what he accused Joice Mujuru and before her Morgan Tsvangirai. He failed to make the charge stick in both cases for lack of evidence but that has never deterred Mugabe from making such wild and unfounded allegations.

Charging Mawarire of holding a peaceful public protest will result in a few weeks in jail sentence at most, hardly the five years with hard labour Mugabe wanted.

The regime ended up with a lot of egg on its face last July when the Magistrate dismissed all the charges brought against him; Mawarire won that round. Unless the regime “jazz up” the charges against Mawarire there is no doubt that Mawarire will once again win this round by a unanimous decision!

Khupe Challenges Tsvangirai On Coalition Deal

FRESH fissures have rocked the opposition MDC-T leadership, with party leader Morgan Tsvangirai and his deputy, Thokozani Khupe, giving discordant views on the proposed grand coalition to contest against President Robert Mugabe’s Zanu PF in next year’s elections.

With Tsvangirai having declared that a coalition deal, particularly with Zimbabwe People First (ZimPF) leader Joice Mujuru, is as good as done, Khupe yesterday literally threw the cat among the pigeons, arguing the MDC-T may not need partners in the Matabeleland provinces.

Khupe, one of Tsvangirai’s three deputies together with Nelson Chamisa and Elias Mudzuri, in a move that seems to ring-fence her area of influence, suggested that the proposed alliance should only be confined to Mashonaland, as MDC-T structures in the Matabeleland region have consistently won against Zanu PF since the turn of the millennium.

“I am not against any coalition, but for me, the question that we must ask ourselves is why we want a coalition as a political party,” she said yesterday.

“As a political party, when you want a coalition, you would have realised a gap in your party and as the MDC, where is our gap?

“It is clear our gap is in Mashonaland East, West and Central, where we have consistently not done very well.

“So, when looking for a coalition partner, you must look for a partner, who is going to be able to cover that gap.”

Khupe argued that any coalition pact with other parties in Matabeleland would only result in a poor showing in the next elections.

“You can’t look for a partner, who will come and disturb, where you have won consistently since 2000. Where you have gotten 100%, what will that person do? What value are they going to add? On a coalition, you must want value addition to what you already have,” she said emphatically.

“You don’t want someone, who will come and disturb what we already have. What we don’t have right now is Mashonaland and that is where we need a strong coalition partner and that is the only way we are able to remove Zanu PF.”

Khupe’s remarks, while flying in Tsvangirai’s face, seem to buttress a stark warning issued by the MDC-T president’s spokesperson, Luke Tamborinyoka, on possible internal plots to derail efforts to forge a coalition, as he claimed there were others who wanted to scupper the process “for subjective motivations driven by selfish and personal interests to do with positions”.

“I can only promise one thing to the people of Zimbabwe: Never mind the sceptics — and there are many of them around — Mugabe will contest against a united opposition in 2018,” Tamborinyoka wrote for NewsDay.

“Yes, the people are speaking and we are listening. Future generations will not forgive us if we let slip this chance to consign misgovernance to the dustbins of history.”

In an interview, Tamborinyoka maintained that Tsvangirai had the sole mandate to discuss coalition issues, but pointed out that party organs and members had a right to express their opinions.

“We are a democratic party, so our members are free to express their feelings,” he said.

“But, I must say that the MDC’s executive organs have given our leader, president Tsvangirai, an exclusive mandate on issues of the coalition.

“We are not going to be dragged into discussing issues of nuances and strategy in the media. We will not negotiate in the media.”

Tsvangirai is said to have courted the Welshman Ncube-led MDC, but negotiations have seemingly stalled, as the MDC-T’s Matabeleland structures are sceptical of a reunion with their former secretary-general.

In 2007, a unity deal between the two parties failed, as the MDC-T’s Matabeleland structures once again refused to join hands with the MDC, a decision that later proved fatal, as Tsvangirai missed the Presidency by a whisker in 2008.

Tsvangirai has just concluded a 10-day consultative tour of the Matabeleland region, where he claims to have received a mandate to forge an alliance with other opposition parties and select a single candidate to challenge Mugabe in the 2018 presidential race. – Newsday

Mudenda’s Son Faces Jail

SPEAKER of Parliament Jacob Mudenda’s son, Donald McKenzie, was last week issued with summons for civil imprisonment after a local property owner, Mark Lorenco, stepped up efforts to execute judgment to recover rent arrears amounting to over $22 000.

Lorenco, who is cited as the plaintiff in case number 7544/14, is represented by a local law firm, Mapendere and Associates, and the matter has been set down for hearing in the Motion Court on February 15 this year.

Part of the summons reads: “If you (Mudenda) fail to pay the sum specified above ($22 444,73), you must appear before the Magistrate Court at Harare … to explain why you have not paid it and to show cause why an order of your imprisonment should not be made on account of your failure to pay.”

Court papers show that, Mudenda was sometime in 2015 ordered by Harare Civil Court resident magistrate, Brighton Pabwe, to pay the money together with an order evicting him from Lorenco’s business property at Number 37 McLaughlin Road, Kensington in Harare.

Lorenco had approached the court seeking an order compelling the Speaker’s son to pay rent arrears, as well as electricity and telephone bills. The property mogul also wanted the court to force Mudenda to vacate his property, which he rented for a company called Dynamic Success (Pvt) Ltd.

His lawyer, Elias Mapembere, confirmed he had sought the court’s intervention, accusing Mudenda of being evasive.

“We have since applied for civil imprisonment against Mudenda. The predicament we are facing right now is that he cannot be found. We, at one point, sent the messenger of court to attach property at a house in Bulawayo, but it later turned out the said property was a family house,” Mapendere said.

According to the court papers, sometime in March 2013, Mudenda and his company entered into a lease agreement with Lorenco for a property in Kensington, Harare.

The Speaker’s son later accrued rental arrears amounting to $10 900, for which, in spite of proper demand, he allegedly refused, neglected or failed to pay. – Newsday

Evan Mawarire To Explode Zimbabwe Into Gambian Glory ?

The US returnee Evan Mawarire could soon make Zimbabwe Gambian-glorious, Zimbos said this week as the preacher touched base in Harare.

EVAN-MUGABE

A LIVE ZimEye program on file which concludes that Mawarire’s flame contrary to the the present negativity, will only burn brighter, correlates with those statements as the clergyman this week revealed he is considering entering active politics.

Mawarire whose journey as the article below narrates is at the centre of 3 revivalists, the first one was religious, the second one political and the last one is both political and religious.

Mawarire’s political path seems to ring true of a Shakespearan line, “Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon them.” Mawarire himself does not seem to be totally in control or aware of his fast unraveling political path, the expectations and responsibilities that come with it. Take for instance a strange development which saw Mawarire being the only person in the whole country who could imitate Mugabe’s “Salad” accent. He would appear at weddings shouting like the 92 year old tyrant: “Government refuses to accept the sanctions imposed by the United States and their allies on our land…” while poking laughter into revelers at weddings. He even graced the wedding of spin doctor Prof Jonathan Moyo’s daughter. Moyo works for Mugabe the latter who led Southern Africa’s political revival from 1975 to 1981.

Then bang!  – suddenly came May 2016 when Mawarire en-flamed Africa’s first political revival typical of the famous Welsh Revival 1903-4 when the whole Welsh nation was gripped by “a love for God” to the extent that thieves, murderers and crooks became extinct and police officers were retrenched as there was no more crime in the land. That revival was led by another Evan whose surname was Roberts. From Evan Roberts, to Robert Mugabe, and now to Evan Mawarire – the story seems to tell more than meets the eye what Zimbabwe is awaiting with the sudden rise of Evan Mawarire. For now the recent weeks have seen many corrupt ZRP cops hit by the #ThisFlag campaign begin to confess “their sins” and seek public clemency. More to follow in PART 2

PSMAS Suspends 5 “Corrupt Executives”

Premier Service Medical Aid Society (PSMAS) has suspended five executives for allegedly siphoning millions of dollars at the height of the mega salaries scandal under former group chief executive officer, Dr Cuthbert Dube.

The five are head of communications and stakeholder relations Ms Mavis Gumbo, head of marketing Mrs Anna Mtengwa Mangwiro, Mr Richard Mutasa (head of risk and audit), company secretary Mr Cosmas Mukwesha and head of managed care, Dr Nicholas Munyonga.

They are expected to appear before a disciplinary hearing in the next 14 days to answer to charges of swindling the medical aid society.

The five were exposed by an audit instituted to look into the salaries scandal at PSMAS after the expulsion of Dr Dube, who was reportedly taking home more than $500 000 per month in salaries and allowances.

The society has already instituted legal proceedings against other executives who have left.

They are Dr Dube, former finance director Mr Ernest Gwinyai, former operations director Mr Enock Chitekedza, Mr Raphel Paradzai and Mrs Juliana Sabarauta.

They were all implicated in the audit report for defrauding the society through, among others scams, not paying tax, masked transactions, board fees and allowances for non-PSMAS business.

PSMAS board chairman Mr Jeremiah Bvirindi confirmed the latest suspension of the five executives yesterday.
He said the board recommended that management implements the findings and recommendations of the audit report.

“We have now completed studying the report and we resolved that we pursue the criminal cases in terms of the PSMAS code of conduct. This resulted in senior managers being suspended pending their appearing before a disciplinary hearing,” said Mr Bvirindi.

“We are not saying they are guilty. They are still innocent until they are proven guilty before the disciplinary hearing.”

The five executives were served with suspension letters on Wednesday and are expected to appear before a disciplinary hearing within 14 days.

Asked why it had taken the board so long to implement the audit report, Mr Bvirindi said they were still new and needed to put structures and policies in place.

The new board also needed to study the audit report, consult financial and legal experts and implement measures accordingly, he said. – State Media

Shock As Man Kicks Son to Death

A 30-year-old Chinamhora man who wanted to kick his wife in a domestic row, but kicked his six-month-old son instead, killing him instantly, yesterday appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing murder charges.

Chamunorwa Mavhunga of Ngwandangwanda Village was remanded in custody to February 15 by the magistrate Mrs Rumbidzai Mugwagwa.

She advised him to apply for bail at the High Court. He is being charged for contravening Section 47 of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act Chapter 9:23

Prosecuting, Mr Sebastian Mutizirwa told the court that on December 6 last year, Mavhunga had an altercation with his wife, Ndakarevei Madyo, who was holding their baby boy in her hands.

He alleged that Mavhunga then started assaulting Madyo with booted foot and clenched fists, before striking her with stones.

Mr Mutizirwa alleged that Mavhunga then kicked the baby to the ground. After noticing that he had kicked the baby, Mavhunga disappeared and went to an unknown destination.

Mavhunga was later arrested by the police at Arda Nijo in Borrowdale, Harare, following a tip-off. – State Media

O’Level Results Out

The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) will today release November 2016 Ordinary Level results.

Zimsec public relations manager Ms Nicky Dlamini confirmed the development to The Herald yesterday.

“We will be releasing the November 2016 Ordinary Level results tomorrow (today),” she said.

There was an overall increase in pass rate of 5,48 percent in 2015 as compared to the previous year. The November 2015 pass rate was 27,76 percent for school candidates while private candidates scored 12,01 percent.

The pass rates were based on candidates who passed five or more subjects with a Grade C or better.

Zimsec director Mr Esau Nhandara last year announced that the examination board had, for the first time, downscaled pass rates by recognising Grade E as a pass.

He said candidates who obtained a Grade E would be given a certificate grade while those passing with Grade C or better would be considered to have passed the subject with a credit.

As parents and pupils prepare to collect the results, there are fears that some schools may not be accessible due to the effects of flooding in some parts of the country.

There have been reports of several schools and access roads being damaged by the floods.

According to the Civil Protection Unit in its January report, 38 schools had been affected by the rains and several dams had been breached, posing danger to people. – State Media

Police Warn Pirate Taxis, Kombi Drivers

Police yesterday warned pirate taxi and kombi drivers that they risk having their vehicles impounded if they are found with touts hanging at the back or on the doors of their vehicles.

In a statement, chief police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba said they had noted with concern such unacceptable behaviour.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police has noted with concern the unacceptable behaviour by some touts, who cling precariously on the back of commuter omnibuses and doors of small vehicles that are used by illegal transport operators (Mushikashika) to ferry passengers while these vehicles are in motion,” she said.

She said police have recorded incidences where some touts had fallen and were eventually run over.

“Clinging or hanging out of moving vehicles is illegal and against public safety.

“The so-called touts are tarnishing the image of the transport industry and the country at large,” Snr Asst Comm Charamba said.

She urged commuter omnibus operators to rein in their drives and conductors against such acts.

“Stern action will be taken against offenders and commuter omnibus operators will be held responsible for this uncouth behaviour by their crews.

“Any vehicles found on the road with anyone hanging and clearly exhibiting carelessness and life-threatening behaviour will be impounded,” she said.

In October last year, the ZRP said they were pressing for the enactment of a law that deals with pirate taxis.

This came after 123 unlicensed drivers were arrested countrywide last year after being involved in road traffic accidents.

The current legislation does not have deterrent measures against the pirate taxis and errant commuter omnibus crews.

The unlicensed drivers were arrested between January 1 and September 30 last year.

They faced charges of driving without driver’s licences, negligent driving and culpable homicide.

The officer commanding national traffic, Senior Assistant Commissioner Fellie Chikowero-Mjanga, said there was need for a new law to deal with the pirate taxis and omnibus crews.

She said the force had noted that deterrent measures could instil discipline among motorists.- State Media

Grace Hits Campaign Trail

Zanu PF women’s league has said it will soon meet to finalise a planned campaign to mobilise support for 92-year-old President Robert Mugabe ahead of the 2018 elections, a senior official has said.

The league’s secretary for finance, Sarah Mahoka, told journalists that now that President Robert Mugabe’s wife, Grace — leader of the women’s wing — is back from a month-long annual holiday, they can “meet as national executive to map the way forward”.

“…she (Grace) will rest a while before we come together as the national executive, probably next week or the other, to also allow provinces to conclude their on-going provincial coordinating committee meetings countrywide,” the First Lady’s ally said.

“Our focus this year is to make sure that we mobilise our supporters to rally behind…Mugabe, who is our candidate for the elections next year,” Mahoka said.

“We will mobilise all women to come forth and defend our president,” she added.
While Mahoka declined to give details of other important programmes the women’s league will be pursuing, the outspoken Hurungwe East legislator told the Daily News in a separate interview that they will also emphasise their desire to regain one of the ruling party’s two vice president posts by pressing  for constitutional changes to that effect.

She said following complaints by Mugabe over non-implementation of Zanu PF conference resolutions, the women’s league is going to vigorously pursue all its resolutions including the one calling for the re-introduction of a woman vice president that was adopted in 2015.

“The president made it clear that he was not happy with a situation where the party makes resolutions that are not implemented, Amai (Grace) said we should start implementing all our resolutions now by making sure that the women’s quota clause is incorporated in the party constitution,” Mahoka said.

The league, which was the only organ given the chance to outline its own resolutions to the Masvingo conference, made the issue of representation in the presidium, consisting of the party’s president and his two deputies, very clear.

Its deputy secretary, Eunice Sandi-Moyo, told the December 2016 Zanu PF conference: “We are concerned with lack of implementation of party resolutions made in 2015 in Victoria Falls.”

“We made it clear that we wanted the constitution to be changed to allow an earlier provision that one of the two VPs should be a woman. This has not been implemented.”
Observers say the move by the women’s league is aimed at ousting Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who they do not want to succeed Mugabe.

Zanu PF is divided along factional lines, with the Mnangagwa faction fighting a war of attrition with the rival G40 faction that is believed to have coalesced around Mugabe’s wife. – Daily News

Mawarire In Court Tomorrow

Evan Mawarire who was arrested last night on his arrival from the United States of America is expected to appear in court tomorrow morning.

News hounds from both the local and international media houses flocked to Harare Magistrates Court today expecting to get the latest update on Mawarire’s story following his arrest yesterday evening but Mawarire was in no show as he is said to be still in police custody.

His lawyer Harrison Nkomo said his client was not on the police wanted list when he left the country as he had been acquitted on the charges he faced.

Nkomo added that Mawarire faces two charges relating to subversion and another relating to incitement.

Expectations are tomorrow morning Mawarire will appear before a Harare Magistrate to answer to the charges raised against him by the state.

Meanwhile, the controversial return of Pastor Evan Mawarire has been described as a foiled stage managed mission orchestrated by his Western handlers to try to cause disharmony and portray a bad picture of Zimbabwe ahead of the 2018 harmonised elections.
Pastor Mawarire returned yesterday from his self imposed exile but was immediately arrested on arrival at the Harare International Airport.

“The controversial return of Pastor Mawarire has nothing to do his so called fight for democracy by a pastor-cum political activist, but a calculated stage managed ploy by his sponsors which should be treated with the contempt it deserves,” says a legal practitioner James Makiya.

Political analyst Mr Psychology Maziwisa says the fictious landing of Mawarire can best be described as an unholy search of unnecessary attention and unacceptable.

Pastor Mawarire was arrested yesterday at the Harare International Airport and police is quoted saying the controversial pastor was on a warrant of arrest. – State Media

Congo’s Main Opposition Leader, Etienne Tshisekedi, Dies at 84

KINSHASA (Reuters) – Democratic Republic of Congo’s veteran opposition leader, Etienne Tshisekedi, has died in Brussels aged 84, his party said on Wednesday.

Tshisekedi stood up to Mobutu Sese Seko, who ruled the country then known as Zaire, for more than three decades before Mobutu was overthrown by Rwanda, Uganda and other forces.

He was also the main civilian opponent of Laurent Kabila, who took power in 1997, and his son, President Joseph Kabila, who has ruled since 2001.

Tshisekedi was set to take the top post in a transitional council agreed in December under a deal to pave the way for Kabila to leave power in 2017 and refrain from running for a third term as president.

His death deprives the opposition of its principal figurehead as talks over implementation of the December accord falter. His son, Felix, is tipped to be named prime minister in a forthcoming power-sharing government.

“The information is confirmed. The (party) president is dead,” the spokesman for Tshisekedi’s Union for Democracy and Social Progress (UDPS) party, Augustin Kabuya, told Reuters.

A pivotal figure in Congo, whose history has been marked by foreign intervention, civil war, coups and authoritarian rule, Tshisekedi’s stalwart activism meant he could draw huge crowds.

His death comes at another inflection point in the country’s history following Joseph Kabila’s failure to step down when his constitutional mandate expired in December.

Dozens have died since 2015 in anti-government protests over alleged efforts by Kabila to cling to power and international powers fear tensions could spark a resurgence of civil wars that lead to the deaths of millions between 1996 and 2003.

As word of his death spread in the capital Kinshasa, clashes broke out near his house in the Limete district between stone-throwing UDPS supporters and dozens of police, who fired teargas and made several arrests, a Reuters witness said.

Tshisekedi served as a minister under Mobutu before founding the UDPS, the first organized opposition platform in Zaire, in 1982.

He was named prime minister four times in the 1990s as Mobutu contended with pro-democratic currents in the country, but Tshisekedi never lasted more than a few months as he repeatedly clashed with the charismatic autocrat.

He finished runner-up to Kabila in the 2011 presidential election. International observers said the vote was marred by fraud and Tshisekedi’s supporters have referred to him ever since as the “elected president”.

“A baobab (tree) has fallen,” Albert Moleka, his chief of staff during the 2011 election, told Reuters. “The baobab protects you from the rain and the sun … people like that can’t be replaced.”

Tshisekedi returned to Congo’s capital, Kinshasa, last July to a hero’s welcome after two years in Brussels for medical treatment. The UDPS said he returned to Brussels last week for a checkup.

#ThisFlag Mawarire Now A Politician

Pastor Evan Mawarire introduces himself as a politician in-the-wait.

#ThisFlag Pastor Evan Mawarire has come out to reveal that he has considered entering politics. Mawarire arrived back in Zimbabwe yesterday and is currently in police custody, being held on several charges which border on treason. In an interview held with a South-African publication before travelling back to Zimbabwe, Mawarire spoke to the Daily Maverick below is what he says;

Mawarire is also considering running for public office. When he spoke to the Daily Maverick initially, from the United States, he was adamant he did not want to take that route. But by the time we met up in Johannesburg, his thoughts had evolved: “The more I think about the options, the steps going forward, I realise you can only shout about potholes for so long. You start to realise where change comes from. So at some point we have to start saying that for those that have the ability, the passion, or the buy-in from the people, it may be time to throw your hat in.”

Mawarire has also got over his initial disgust at the whole idea of getting involved in the ugly, messy business of electoral politics. He just didn’t like what politicians represented in Zimbabwe – the corruption, the greed, the naked ambition. “It’s the same as when you watch your father beat your mother, you say I will never be a husband. But then, when you grow up, you say you say will be a different kind of husband.” Mawarire, in other words, wants to be a different kind of politician.

ZRP Boss Caught Having Sex Junior Cop’s Wife

Terrence Mawawa, Gutu |A Zimbabwe Republic Police Sergeant, Amos Mandiwadzira ran amok and assaulted fellow cops after being caught having sex with a junior police officer’s wife. Mandiwanzira(42) went berserk and assaulted Constable Liberty Kashiri who had accompanied Constable Brian Chikono to the latter’s house.

Chikono is married to Madeline Makonese who had a secret affair with Mandiwanzira. The case was heard before Gutu Magistrate Edwin Marecha last week. Chikono was accompanied by Kashiri and other police officers to his house in Gonville , Mupandawana. Upon arrival at the house Chikono broke the door and found his wife having sex with Mandiwanzira. Kashiri stood at the door to stop Mandiwanzira from running away.

However,  Mandiwanzira assaulted Kashiri and pushed him as he tried to run away. “Mandiwanzira became violent when Chikono caught him in a compromising position. He assaulted Kashiri and tried to run away from the scene. However he was caught before he escaped,” the court heard. Mandiwanzira was apprehended after a group of police officers teamed up with Gonville residents to stop him from fleeing.

“Mandiwanzira became violent and he was only apprehended when police officers-including Chikono teamed up with Gonville residents,” read part of the state outline. However Magistrate Marecha has recused himself from the case.He also said he would refer the case to another court. The magistrate did not state the reasons for recusing himself.

Mnangagwa Plots To Bar Moyo From Politburo Meetings

The factional fights in the ruling Zanu PF get more nasty, with Prof. Jonathan Moyo in the letter below exposes some of the shenanigans that have been taking place behind the scenes, by the Emmerson Mnangagwa led faction to among many moves, bar him from attending Politburo meetings.

PRESS STATEMENT

My attention has been drawn to a media statement by successionist elements in the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA), first reported by ZBC News on Saturday evening, 30 January, 2016 and subsequently carried by NewsDay and the Daily News on Monday 1 February, 2016.

The Statement declares support for scurrilous and unprecedented political attacks on Cabinet Ministers, including myself, who are also Politburo members by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Media, Information and Broadcasting Services, George Charamba. In particular, the statement threatens to physically bar me from attending the next Politburo meeting and purports to bar me from accessing the 16th Floor of ZANU PF Head Quarters, which 16th floor does not exist except only in their ignorant minds.

Apparently, the said statement was issued after a provincial meeting of ZNLVVVA held on Saturday, 30 January, 2016 at Dzivarasekwa Presidential Barracks which was chaired by John Guta and officiated by ZNLWVA National Chairman, Chris Mutsvangwa and its Secretary General Victor Matemadanda.

It is extraordinary and indeed scary that the Dzivarasekwa Presidential Guard Barracks was used as a venue for a meeting whose purpose was to plot and threaten physical harm against a Cabinet Minister and Politburo member appointed to both offices by His Excellency, the President. This was a gross and unacceptable abuse of a State facility. The fact that this unprecedented abuse of a State Barracks was officiated by Chris Mutsvangwa – a Cabinet Minister and Politburo member – not only raises eyebrows about (what) else was plotted but also clearly demonstrates the extent to which Chris Mutsvangwa has gone rogue in pursuit of not just a factionalist agenda but also a desperate successionist plot.

It should be remembered that ahead of the 2015 ZANU PF’s National People’s Conference, the same Chris Mutsvangwa availed his Ministerial office to a shadowy youth group from which it made violent statements barring Cdes Saviour Kasukuwere, Patrick Zhuwao and myself from setting foot at the National Heroes Acre. Abusing a Government Ministerial office for that outrageous purpose was bad enough but abusing Dzivarasekwa Presidential Guard Barracks in pursuit of a successionist plot is just going way too far.

For the record, I wish to state that it is false and insulting to His Excellency, the President, to claim that he sent George Charamba to savage his Cabinet Ministers and Politburo Members on public radio with all of primitive insults such as “uneducated fools”; “little men” among other unprintable epithets. Cabinet Ministers and Politburo members are not civil servants but are Presidential appointees with whom His Excellency the President has direct communication as their boss.

In the same vein and for the avoidance of doubt, I reiterate that only a blithering idiot will say or believe that I am working with Joice Mujuru‘s People First project which exists only in the media.

Finally, nobody should make the mistake of thinking for a moment that they can block me from attending a Politburo meeting called and chaired by President Mugabe. That can never happen. Only the President can stop anyone from attending any meeting he convenes or chairs. For anyone else to seek to do that under any pretext whatsoever will be tantamount to usurping the President’s prerogative and authority, something which is not different from a successionist attempt at a coup.

20 Years Prison For Mawarire

The Zimbabwe pastor who fled to the United States after launching the popular #ThisFlag protest movement faces up to 20 years in prison for organizing protests against President Robert Mugabe in New York.

Evan Mawarire was arrested at Harare International Airport on his return home Wednesday. He is yet to appear in court.

Mawarire has been charged with subverting a constitutionally elected government, which carries up to 20 years in prison.

Lawyer Harrison Nkomo says the charges arise partly from his role in organizing anti-Mugabe protests during the U.N. General Assembly in September last year.

Mawarire is accused of organizing Zimbabweans “to converge in New York to confront the president of Zimbabwe,” according to a police statement seen by The Associated Press and confirmed by his lawyers Thursday. – Fox News

Zanu PF Unleashes Terror Campaign In Mwenezi

Terrence Mawawa, Mwenezi |The ruling Zanu PF party has launched its campaign for the Mwenezi East by-election in a violent manner it has emerged. Sources in Mwenezi revealed to ZimEye.com that Zanu PF held several meetings at the weekend and villagers were intimidated ahead of the by-election.

The by-election will be held to replace the late Zanu PF MP for the area,Joshua Moyo who died in December. “Zanu PF is intimidating villagers here.Party officials addressed a meeting in ward 13 at the weekend. They said people will be assaulted if they do not vote for the ruling party.

They also instructed village heads to submit names of all members of opposition parties. They forced business people to close their shops at the weekend. The terror campaign has already started here.

Fear has gripped the Mwenezi Community,”said a local villager. Zanu PF Provincial Political Commissar Jeppey Jaboon confirmed the ruling party had launched the campaign for the Mwenezi East by-election and denied there were cases of intimidation in the area. “I was in Mwenezi on Sunday for a meeting and we are finalising matters. We are not looking back.We will win the seat at all costs and let me tell you that Zanu PF is not afraid of Bhasikiti who wants to contest on a Zim PF ticket,”said Jaboon.

Zanu PF’s Beauty Chabaya won the Bikita West by-election following a violent campaign and intimidation of villagers. Opposition parties say the Zanu PF wins elections through rigging ,violence and intimidation of perceived opponents.

ZACC Plots Against Moyo

SHOCKING details of a plot to nail Higher and Tertiary Education Minister Jonathan Moyo over the alleged abuse of funds from the Zimbabwe Manpower Development Fund (ZIMDEF) emerged this week as the dog-eat-dog factional fights in the ruling party spilled to its youth wing, the Financial Gazette can exclusively report.

The Zanu-PF Politburo member was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) in November last year for alleged abuse of office and misappropriation of more than US$400 000 of ZIMDEF funds.

Moyo, along with his deputy, Godfrey Gandawa, are facing several allegations, among them, abusing ZIMDEF money to acquire bicycles for traditional leaders in Tsholotsho North, a constituency under Moyo, and influencing the Fund to release 100 000 litres of fuel worth US$118 500, which was said to have been diverted to the black market.

Both ministry officials denied the charges, arguing that they never used the money for personal gain, but for charity and to fund Zanu-PF activities.

Moyo confirmed last year to have donated, through ZAIMDEF, 100 000 litres of fuel coupons towards the one-million-man march, staged by the party’s Youth League in May, in solidarity with President Robert Mugabe, who was facing protests at the time from former liberation war fighters, disenchanted with his rule.

Following his arrest last year the Higher Education Minister could not be arraigned before the magistrates court after he successfully approached the Constitutional Court (ConCourt) seeking relief on the basis that ZACC had no powers to arrest and detain him.

In its ruling the ConCourt suspended his arrest until a determination of his application challenging the consttutionality of the arrest. The court is still to make a ruling on the application

The Financial Gazette can reveal that the Zanu-PF Youth League is currently divided right through the middle over ZACC’s investigations.

A faction campaigning for Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa to succeed President Mugabe now stands accused of sinking to desperate depths to nail Moyo who, lately, has not been hiding his disapproval of Mnangagwa ascending to the top office in the event that the current holder retires.

In an unsigned letter to the ruling party’s secretary for administration, Ignatius Chombo, members of the Zanu-PF Youth League, who signed off as “worried youths”, alleged that the party’s head of the secretariat, Dickson Dzora, was putting pressure to bear on them to “mislead” ZACC investigators into believing that the fuel coupons never reached their office at the party’s headquarters in Harare.

They specifically alleged that Dzora had been attempting to push his agenda through Blessing Mupaya, the league’s national director.

Dzora, who denied the accusations this week, is also being accused of promoting factionalism by coercing party youths to align themselves with the Team Lacoste faction to secure their jobs because its kingpin was most likely to succeed President Mugabe.

Team Lacoste and Generation 40 (G40) are the two camps in Zanu-PF. The former is campaigning for Mnangagwa to succeed the incumbent while the latter favours the status quo.

The “worried youths”, said Dzora was working closely with Goodson Nguni, a known Mnangagwa ally who works as the commissioner in charge of investigations at ZACC.

“Comrade secretary (Chombo), I (sic) bring to your attention serious interference by Mr Dzora and abuse of office to promote factionalism. Mr Dzora is working with Mr Nguni to promote factionalism. They are using Vice President Mnangagwa’s name and they are pressuring us as the Youth League secretariat to say we did not get any funding from ZIMDEF and Professor Moyo to support our programmes,” reads part of the letter, copied to the party’s national political commissar, Saviour Kasukuwere; secretary for youth affairs, Kudzai Chipanga; secretary for security, Sydney Sekeramayi; Moyo and Gandawa.

The letter also accuses Dzora of being an ally of former vice president, Joice Mujuru, who was expelled from Zanu-PF on allegations of attempting to topple President Mugabe from power, unconstitutionally.

“Mr Dzora is offering us money and paying us to lie that Tongai Kasukuwere and Chipanga are covering up for Professor (Moyo), but the truth is that we got assistance from ZIMDEF…He is also saying we will get good jobs once VP Mnangagwa takes over from President Mugabe. As such, we are now divided since some are co-operating with Mr Dzora and Nguni in their plot to destroy Professor Moyo and Dr Gandawa accusing them as sponsors of President’s programmes and G40,” further reads the letter.

But a section of the Youth League believes the wing’s leadership was attempting to mislead ZACC and protect some of their colleagues who might have abused the fuel coupons sourced from ZIMDEF.

This group is arguing that while Moyo and Gandawa confirmed donating 100 000 litres of fuel coupons during the million man march organised by party youths in support of President Mugabe in May last year, there was no record at their offices showing that the donation reached its intended destination.

The furore has since claimed the scalp of Mupaya, who allegedly lost his job after informing ZACC investigators that he penned the letter to Chombo on behalf of the youths under duress.

Mupaya’s “confession” was said to have angered Chipanga; secretary for finance Tongai Kasukuwere; secretary for commissariat, Innocent Hamandishe; and secretary for administration, Xavier Kazizi, who then allegedly instigated his dismissal.

Mupaya confirmed to the Financial Gazette that he had indeed lost his job, but refused to shed more light.

“Please sir, I do not want to talk about that issue, thank you,” he said before terminating the phone call.

Kasukuwere, Hamandishe and Kazizi all declined to comment, referring questions to Chipanga.

“I do not want to comment on that matter. Talk to Chombo or (Dickson) Dzora who are in charge of party employees,” Chipanga said over the phone from his farm in Headlands.Efforts to get a comment from Chombo were futile.

Although Chombo has been ducking appointment requests from the Financial Gazette for the past two weeks and ignoring calls and messages to his mobile phone, sources close to him confided that he had received the letter, but decided to ignore it.

Dzora, who is said by sources to have strongly defended Mupaya, sought to downplay the issue, charging: “There are no such problems here. Where did you get that?”

Kasukuwere, Moyo and Gandawa confirmed receiving the letter from the “worried youths” yesterday while Sekeramayi, who is the secretary for defence in the Politburo promised to give his response after the Cabinet meeting. He was yet to do so by the time of going to print.

“It was delivered to my office secretary who signed for it. I only advised that it should be filed. I could not do anything about it since it was not addressed to me,” said Kasukuwere.

In an emailed response, Moyo said: “Yes I got a copy of the letter early last month and passed it on to my lawyers for their attention.”

In a telephone call Gandawa said: “I saw the letter and filed it.”

The Financial Gazette understands that things came to a head during the wing’s January 19 meeting to prepare for the 21st February Movement celebrations to mark President Mugabe’s 93rd birthday to be held in Matabeleland South’s Matobo district.

During the closed door meeting one of the youth delegates is said to have demanded transparency and accountability regarding donations that would be made towards the celebrations while citing the alleged case in which 100 000 litres of fuel donated by ZIMDEF for the million man march could not be accounted for.

Chombo, who had been invited to preside over the meeting, had to cool down tempers after youths started exchanging harsh words.

ZACC spokesperson, Phyllis Chikundura, refused to disclose details of the investigation, evasively saying: “ZACC is not doing anything about the alleged report. I hope this helps you in the article you are writing.”

She ignored further probing by the Financial Gazette.

Mawarire Plotted To Remove Mugabe’s Regime – Police | LATEST

Ray Nkosi | #ThisFlag Pastor Evan Mawarire was yesterday arrested at the Harare international airport as he touched down in Zimbabwe.

Pastor Mawarire was charged late last night with subverting a constitutional government in contravention of Section 22 (2) (b) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

His lawyer Harrison Nkomo is reported to have seen him this morning, at Harare Central Police Station, where he is detained. Below is a full legal brief by Lawyers for Human Rights;

PASTOR MAWARIRE CHARGED WITH SUBVERTING CONSTITUTIONAL GOVERNMENT

ZIMBABWEAN police on Wednesday 01 February 2017 charged Pastor Evan Mawarire with subverting a constitutional government after arresting the clergyman upon his arrival in the country from the USA.

Pastor Mawarire was arrested at Harare International Airport on his return home and detained at Harare Central Police Station before he was charged with subverting a constitutional government as defined in Section 22 (2) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

According to a warned and cautioned statement, which was recorded from Pastor Mawarire on Wednesday evening, Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers alleged that the clergyman incited Zimbabweans from “all walks of life either locally or internationally” to revolt and overthrow a constitutionally elected government.

The ZRP officers charged that Pastor Mawarire, who is represented by Harrison Nkomo and Sharon Hofisi, a member of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, circulated several videos on social media platforms inciting Zimbabweans “to stage violent demonstrations to subvert the constitutional government of Zimbabwe and resultantly from August 2016 to January 2017 there have been violent demonstrations in the country where several property was destroyed.”

The police officers alleged that on 15 September 2016, Pastor Mawarire incited some Zimbabweans living in the USA and “all over the world” through social media to converge in New York on 22 September 2016 to “confront” President Mugabe, who was attending the United Nations General Assembly and order him to “immediately” resign from his position accusing him of destroying the country.

In July 2016, ZRP officers arrested and charged Pastor Mawarire with inciting public violence at a time when Zimbabweans staged crippling anti-government protests before prosecutors altered the charges to attempting to overthrow a constitutional government. However, Harare Magistrate Vakai Chikwekwe set free the clergyman after ruling that ZRP officers had violated his constitutional rights in arresting and detaining him and that it was also unconstitutional for prosecutors to bring fresh charges against the clergyman while in court.

In September last year, President Mugabe told his ruling ZANU PF party supporters upon returning from New York that Pastor Mawarire was a “great shame” and a “disgrace” for “allowing himself to demonstrate against the country” during the United Nations General Assembly.
