By President Vladimir Putin | 80 years have passed since the beginning of the Great Patriotic War.
The attack by Nazi Germany was unprecedented in terms of its destructive power. On June 22, 1941, the Soviet Union (USSR) faced the strongest, most mobilized and skilled army in the World with the industrial, economic and military potential of almost all the conquered countries of Europe working for it. Not only the Nazi, but also their satellites and military contingents of many other states of Europe, took part in this deadly invasion.
The most serious military defeats in 1941 brought the Soviet Union to the brink of catastrophe. Combat power and control had to be restored by extreme means, nation-wide mobilization and intensification of all efforts of the State and the People. In summer 1941, millions of citizens, hundreds of factories and industries began to be evacuated under enemy fire to the east of the country. Manufacture of weapons and munition for the front was launched in the shortest possible time. The Soviet people did something that seemed impossible, both on the front lines and the home front. It is still hard to realize, understand and imagine what incredible efforts, courage, dedication these greatest achievements were worth of.
The tremendous power of the Soviet People, united by the desire to protect the native land, rose against the powerful, armed to the teeth, and cold-blooded Nazi machine. It stood up to take revenge on the enemy, who had broken and trampled peaceful life, as well as people’s plans and hopes.
The Nazi ‘strategists’ were convinced that a huge multinational state of the Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics would be brought to heel easily. They thought that the sudden outbreak of the war, its mercilessness and unbearable hardships would inevitably exacerbate inter- ethnic relations, and that the country could be split into pieces.
But from the very first days, it was clear that the Nazi plan had failed. The Volga region and the Urals, Siberia and the Far East, the republics of Central Asia and Transcaucasia became home to millions of evacuees. Their residents shared everything they had and provided all the support they could. Friendship and mutual help became a real indestructible fortress for the enemy.
The Soviet People and the Red Army made the main and crucial contribution to the defeat of Nazism. These were heroes who fought to the end surrounded by the enemy at Brest, Bialystok and Mogilev, Uman and Kiev, Vyazma and Kharkov. They launched attacks near Moscow and Stalingrad, Sevastopol and Odessa, Kursk and Smolensk. They liberated Warsaw, Belgrade, Vienna and Prague. They stormed Koenigsberg and Berlin.
On April 28, 1942, the US President Franklin D. Roosevelt said in his address to the American nation: “These Russian forces have destroyed and are destroying more armed power of our enemies – troops, planes, tanks, and guns – than all the other United Nations put together.” Winston Churchill in his message to Joseph Stalin of September 27, 1944, wrote that “it is the Russian army that tore the guts out of the German military machine…”.
The years 1941-1945 turned into one of the most dramatic periods in our history. The lives of almost 27 million people were taken away. It was the bravery, sacrifice and resilience of the entire Soviet people and the glorious Red Army strengthened with the gallant and essential support by the Allied Forces that made it possible to defeat Nazism. The Victory over the Third Reich when the Nazi surrendered to the Soviet troops in Berlin in May 1945 was crucial for ending the Second World War. It provided the conditions for establishing the United Nations and contributed significantly to the process of decolonization and to shaping the modern relations between the nations.

Tinashe Sambiri|Pressure group Tajamuka has urged all progressive forces to support MDC Alliance leader President Nelson Chamisa as he is the man who can defeat the Zanu PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa in the 2023 Presidential Election.
Tajamuka also took a swipe at political pretenders and stomach politicians.
Tajamuka leader Promise Mkwananzi described President Chamisa as a dedicated and stable leader.

By Dorrothy Moyo | Former President Robert Mugabe’s son in law Simba Chikore has been acquitted of criminal abuse of office charges he was facing over the national airline, Air Zimbabwe.
Chikore was the national airline’s Chief Operating Officer into the time of the 2017 coup when his father in law was removed from power.
In his ruling, Harare magistrate Ngoni Nduna said the Supreme Court had already made the same finding in matters that were previously heard in the upper court.
Chikore, was represented by lawyer Jonathan Samkange and Brighton Pabwe.
He was accused of flouting tender procedures and awarding security tenders to undeserving companies during the time he was leading the national airline in 2017.
Mdc Alliance KwaZulu-Natal District successfully launched a branch in Inanda, South Africa.
21 June 2021
Mobilisation and recruitment intensify in the Mdc Alliance South Africa Province as KwaZulu-Natal District successfully launched another organic branch in Inanda on Sunday under the astute leadership of the Secretary General Mr Mukudu. Inanda branch was launched after Mdc Alliance Namibia also opened another on the 12th of June in the Northern part of Namibia. This is in line with the party’s #Agenda2021 where social democrats are expected to converge for complete change in the motherland. The successful launch revealed the great zeal in the diaspora to win Zimbabwe for change.
The district leadership did not struggle to gather social transformers in South Africa because the Zimbabwe citizenry exhibited their comprehension on the dire need to mobilise, recruit and radicalise everyone to achieve Constitutional Democracy in the fatherland. The elected pragmatic Chairperson of the main wing leader Dennis Hlaisi and Vice-Chairperson leader Mike Mujaji displayed their enthusiasm and revolutionary energy to urge all Zimbabweans to cross the borders to Register to Vote, Go and Vote in 2023 and consequently get ready to defend the will of the masses. The need to defend the vote becomes a very fundamental strategy after social democrats in Zimbabwe became serial victims of massive rigged elections in Zimbabwe.
Moreover, this opens a novel chapter for KwaZulu-Natal District as the recruitment and mobilisation drive ahead of the harmonised 2023 elections had already kick-started in most districts in the Mdc Alliance province of South Africa. #CitizensConvergenceForChange has commenced to bear fruits and Zimbabweans in the diaspora are getting more and more united under the astute and able leadership of President Advocate Nelson Chamisa Wamba Dia Wamba. Leaders in Inanda were mandated to grow the party branch and encourage members to take party in the serious national issues. The main wing was supported by the Youth Assembly Commander Kudakwashe Tembo and team who vowed to champion complete socio-economic liberation of Zimbabweans who are languishing in abject poverty caused by Zanupf’s failure to improve people’s livelihoods.
The Youth Commander made it very clear that it is the moral obligation of the Youths to save Zimbabwe from these insensitive Zanupf Satanists who continue to loot and steal the national cake with impunity. The Youths shall soldier on with the launched #OneMillionCampaign as well as the #6Million voters by 2023.
In a nutshell, Mdc Alliance Namibia is inspired by visibility activities in KwaZulu-Natal District in South Africa as the vibrant Secretary General promised to pay a courtesy visit to the newly launched branch to inspect progress in the branch. The only plea from the membership was the issue of membership cards to escalate recruitment and mobilisation. I hope the party shall respond urgently to the critical issue of party cards since our people are craving to be properly identified as social transformers in the political behemoth. Mdc Alliance Namibia is also waiting patiently for the party cards to be available so that recruitment and mobilisation can continue unabated.
By Simba Chikanza | A suspected soldier and several armed robbers pounced on a Beitbridge bound Boundary bus last night.
The development was confirmed by local papers, MasvingoMirror and TellZim who revealed the victims are currently hospitalized at Masvingo General Hospital.
https://youtu.be/j4OI61SIMLk
While a comment from the local police was awaited at the time of writing, a source cited by ZimEye at the time narrated her ordeal in the following words:
Good morning to you God’s people. I’ve encountered a problem: I came from Bindura last night, and got to Mbudzi at just after 8pm.
I boarded the bus called Boundary from Mbudzi traveling back to Beitbridge. This bus’ operators announced they are going for recess at Mvuma. When they got to Mvuma people got their foods and so forth. After that, while we were inside the bus as we were approaching the tollgate, it emerged there were several armed robbers on the bus, numbering up to 6. They had guns and they had knives; and they redirected the bus into the nearby bush. They kept going to the driver ordering him to turn this way and that way. They were ordering the driver to follow a certain soldier. The bus had traveled a bit into the forest when it was ordered to switch off its lights.
At that point, everyone was searched. We were beaten up. We got sprayed on, on our eyes. We got sprayed from around 1pm. Up to now it is after 2 and our eyes are still itching badly having been sprayed on. Up to now we are still feeling the pain, since others were stabbed.
The armed men were pointing a gun at anyone forcing them to release money.
After that they repeated their search. If you say you don’t have money you will be punished with beatings. It was so difficult today on the 21st June. And these men it seems they began began their plot back in Mbudzi in Harare, where they also got into this bus.
They were also being followed by a small car behind us. When we had turned into the bush, the car that was following us from behind then followed on, it parked outside and these people began searching us. After they began searching they punctured one of the tyres and quickly left.
We then traveled out of the bush. We got up to the tollgate. After leaving the tollgate, 5 km between there and Masvingo, that’s when the bus started moving on its rim; and the driver tried to control the bus. It was now traveling on its rim. Right now we are here where the breakdown happened. We rang the police station; they haven’t responded. There are people here who are bleeding who are still to be checked.
Tinashe Sambiri|The MDC Alliance has released a statement condemning the destruction of vendors and informal traders’ stalls in Harare Metropolitan Province.
The MDC Alliance has described the Harare demolitions dubbed Operation Murambatsvina 2 as callous and insensitive.
Below is MDC Alliance Secretary for Local Government, Sesel Zvidzai’s statement:
Suicide remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide, according to WHO’s latest estimates, published today in “Suicide worldwide in 2019”. Every year, more people die as a result of suicide than HIV, malaria or breast cancer ̶ or war and homicide. In 2019, more than 700 000 people died by suicide: one in every 100 deaths, prompting WHO to produce new guidance to help countries improve suicide prevention and care.
“We cannot – and must not – ignore suicide,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization. “Each one is a tragedy. Our attention to suicide prevention is even more important now, after many months living with the COVID-19 pandemic, with many of the risk factors for suicide ̶ job loss, financial stress and social isolation – still very much present. The new guidance that WHO is releasing today provides a clear path for stepping up suicide prevention efforts.”
Among young people aged 15-29, suicide was the fourth leading cause of death after road injury, tuberculosis and interpersonal violence.
Rates vary, between countries, regions, and between males and females.
More than twice as many males die due to suicide as females (12.6 per 100 000 males compared with 5.4 per 100 000 females). Suicide rates among men are generally higher in high-income countries (16.5 per 100 000). For females, the highest suicide rates are found in lower-middle-income countries (7.1 per 100 000).
Suicide rates in the WHO African (11.2 per 100 000), European (10.5 per 100 000) and South-East Asia (10.2 per 100 000) regions were higher than the global average (9.0 per 100 000) in 2019. The lowest suicide rate was in the Eastern Mediterranean region (6.4 per 100 000).
Globally, the suicide rate is decreasing; in the Americas it is going up
Suicide rates fell in the 20 years between 2000 and 2019, with the global rate decreasing by 36%, with decreases ranging from 17% in the Eastern Mediterranean Region to 47% in the European Region and 49% in the Western Pacific.
But in the Americas Region, rates increased by 17% in the same time period.
Although some countries have placed suicide prevention high on their agendas, too many countries remain uncommitted. Currently only 38 countries are known to have a national suicide prevention strategy. A significant acceleration in the reduction of suicides is needed to meet the SDG target of a one-third reduction in the global suicide rate by 2030.
LIVE LIFE
To support countries in their efforts, WHO is today releasing comprehensive guidance for implementing its LIVE LIFE approach to suicide prevention. The four strategies of this approach are:
limiting access to the means of suicide, such as highly hazardous pesticides and firearms; educating the media on responsible reporting of suicide; fostering socio-emotional life skills in adolescents; and early identification, assessment, management and follow-up of anyone affected by suicidal thoughts and behaviour. Banning of the most dangerous pesticides: a high-impact intervention
Given that pesticide poisoning is estimated to cause 20% of all suicides, and national bans of acutely toxic, highly hazardous pesticides have shown to be cost-effective, such bans are recommended by WHO. Other measures include restricting access to firearms, reducing the size of medication packages, and installing barriers at jump sites.
Responsible reporting by the media
The guide highlights the role the media plays in relation to suicide. Media reports of suicide can lead to a rise in suicide due to imitation (or copycat suicides) – especially if the report is about a celebrity or describes the method of suicide.
The new guide advises monitoring of the reporting of suicide and suggests that media counteract reports of suicide with stories of successful recovery from mental health challenges or suicidal thoughts. It also recommends working with social media companies to increase their awareness and improve their protocols for identifying and removing harmful content.
Support for adolescents
Adolescence (10-19 years of age) is a critical period for acquiring socio-emotional skills, particularly since half of mental health conditions appear before 14 years of age. The LIVE LIFE guidance encourages actions including mental health promotion and anti-bullying programmes, links to support services and clear protocols for people working in schools and universities when suicide risk is identified.
Early identification and follow-up of people at risk
Early identification, assessment, management and follow-up applies to people who have attempted suicide or are perceived to be at risk. A previous suicide attempt is one of the most important risk factors for a future suicide.
Health-care workers should be trained in early identification, assessment, management and follow-up. Survivors’ groups of people bereaved by suicide can complement support provided by health services. Crisis services should also be available to provide immediate support to individuals in acute distress.
The new guidance, which includes examples of suicide prevention interventions that have been implemented across the world, in countries such as Australia, Ghana, Guyana, India, Iraq, the Republic of Korea, Sweden and the USA, can be used by anyone who is in interested in implementing suicide prevention activities, whether at national or local level, and in the governmental and nongovernmental sectors alike.
“While a comprehensive national suicide prevention strategy should be the ultimate goal for all governments,” said Dr Alexandra Fleischmann, suicide prevention expert at the World Health Organization, “starting suicide prevention with LIVE LIFE interventions can save lives and prevent the heartbreak that follows for those left behind.”

Tinashe Sambiri|The MDC Alliance Namibia says Justice Erica Ndewere is an epitome of judiciary independence.
In a statement MDC Alliance Namibia described Justice Ndewere as a courageous Judge who refused to be manipulated by the Zanu PF regime.
See full statement below:
Justice Erica Ndewere is an epitome of Judiciary Independence, Mdc Alliance Namibia echoes.
20 June 2021
It is quite unfortunate that those who advocate for judiciary independence are victimised by the clueless regime for speaking truth to power. Mdc Alliance Namibia is absolutely infuriated that the objective Judge Erica Ndewere has been found guilty on two trumped up charges by the captured tribunal court which takes instructions from Zanupf morons.
Mdc Alliance Namibia Rundu Branch salutes Justice Erica Ndewere since she epitomises a serious resistance to judiciary capture.
Mdc Alliance Namibia has the conviction that Justice Erica Ndewere’s fight against judicial capture is a People’s fight for; 2.6 million voters whose will for complete socio-economic transformation was subverted by captured courts. We saw the Constitutional Court fight against the People’s Vote when they voted for the change that delivers. Our committed Judge was found guilty of supporting citizens who were unjustly convicted through summary over January 2019 stay away. The people of Zimbabwe are being jailed illegally for demanding justice and equality in Zimbabwe. Activists are denied their basic human freedoms through Zanupf-controlled courts.
By A correspondent- the Zimbabwe Consolidated Diamond Company (ZCDC) has failed to account for the use of money exceeding US$400 million, while also failing to properly account for 352 583.11 carats of diamonds worth about US$146.3 million which were in stock, raising the possibility that they could have been stolen.
In her 2019 report on state enterprises, Auditor-General Mildred Chiri said she doubted the company’s ability to continue operating due to losses while questioning some of the investments of the company.
The Auditor-General is worried that ZCDC may not be able to recover money it invested in companies that have since folded.
Diamond revenue has been a contentious issue with the late former president Robert Mugabe once claiming that revenue of up to US$15 billion had been stolen. Although the figure was largely doubted, it was seen as confirmation that indeed there was looting in the diamond mining sector.
Chiri said ZCDC was failing to conduct a stock count of the diamonds at the sort house, risking possible pilferage of inventories, which may go undetected.
“There was no evidence of a documented formal process of reconciling physical stock counted to theoretical stock. For instance, the following anomalies were noted in respect of diamond stocks which then necessitated post year-end adjustments to the financial statements which had been presented for audit,” Chiri said.
“In 2019, 297 660.41 carats of diamond stock held at MMCZ (Minerals Marketing Corporation of Zimbabwe) was not counted at the time of the stock count. These parcels were packed for customers and held at MMCZ. However, at year-end, during the stock count, these stocks were not included in closing inventories; and in 2018, 41 699.85 carats of diamond stocks held at MMCZ were excluded from the stock count. It was assumed at the time that these stocks had been sold to customers.
“An additional 13 222.85 carats were excluded from the final stock sheet in error.”
The Auditor-General also noted that at the time of the audit in April 2020, there had been a sale of diamonds to a local customer in September 2019, which has not been paid for or collected, eight months after the sale. She said this was in breach of tender rules which state that a customer should pay for their parcels within three days of winning a tender.
Chiri expressed concern that “possible pilferage of inventories may occur and go undetected.”
She also said material variances between physical stock and theoretical stock may go undetected. The audit was not able to verify the valuation (recoverability) of amounts owed by related parties with a balance exceeding US$300 million on the company’s statement of financial position.
“I was not able to verify the valuation (recoverability) of amounts owed by related parties with a balance of $304 258 953 on the company’s statement of financial position. Some of the amounts are owed by companies that have since closed down whilst ZMDC has not acknowledged the amount due. Management failed to provide persuasive audit evidence on how and when these amounts would be recovered. Consequently, I was unable to determine whether any adjustments to the above-stated amounts were necessary,” she said.
“I was not able to verify the valuation (recoverability) of amounts owed by related parties with a balance of $24 347 454 on the Company’s statement of financial position. The amounts are owed by companies that have since closed down. Management has failed to provide us with persuasive audit evidence on how and when these amounts would be recovered.”
Chiri said she could also not verify the valuation of the investment of US$20 295 856 and US$178 799 841 into DTZ- OZGEO Limited as the company failed to enable the office of the Auditor-General to assess the fair valuation.
In addition, the ZCDC management also failed to provide the Auditor-General with an impairment assessment for the investment in the subsidiary.
“Consequently, I was unable to determine whether any adjustments to the above-stated amounts were necessary,” Chiri said.
“I was not able to verify the valuation of accruals with a balance of $51 613 628 (US$51.6 million) and trade creditors with a debit balance of $82 686 279 (US$82.7 million) and the rights and obligations of the company thereon. Delays in the recording of invoices into individual supplier accounts meant that as at the time of our report, management had not provided me with sufficient and appropriate evidence to support these amounts.”
On the governance issues, Chiri noted that the mining company did not have independent directors as all board members in the interim had interests in other related parties.
The company also had some goods worth US$352 068 which were long paid for but not yet received, indicating possible deficiencies in the company’s supplier selection or capacity of selected suppliers to fulfil contractual obligations, according to Chiri.
Five carats of diamonds worth US$2 075 belonging to a producer also went missing at the MMCZ during a weight verification exercise.
“In addition, the CCTV video footages could not be retrieved as there was an internal control system failure,” the Auditor-General said.
The ZCDC paid board fees and allowances that were above the approved rates during the year under review, according to Chiri.
Msasa Park was left awestruck yesterday when a mother, her two-year-old daughter and their domestic helper, died in an inferno in the early house of yesterday morning.
The fire is said to have been caused by an unattended candle that was left on as the family went to bed. Three other children who were inside the house survived when they were rescued by an alert neighbourhood watch team that heard the screams.
They were rushed to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals where they have since been discharged.
Police said in a statement, the fire started when the family retired to bed after placing a lit candle on a plastic cup following a power cut.
“On 19 June 2021, a Harare woman (34), her daughter (2) and a maid died in a fire incident at their house in Msasa Park at midnight.
“The woman’s three children, comprising two boys and a girl aged 10, 6 and 7 respectively, escaped death by a whisker through the help of local security personnel and a passer-by.
“Initial investigations revealed that the fire started from a candle which was lit and placed on a plastic cup, following a power cut, before the family went to bed.”
When The Sunday Mail crew visited the scene yesterday, it gathered that the candle was in one of the children’s bedrooms before setting the entire house ablaze.
The deceased woman’s husband was in a state of shock and refused to speak to The Sunday Mail, referring all questions to his wife’s brother Kudakwashe Kutesera. The husband, believed to be working in Beitbridge, arrived yesterday on news that some members of his family had perished in the fire. Kutesera said the children went to bed before putting the candle out.
“From what we have gathered, the candle was placed on a plastic cup and we believe that is when the fire started,” he said.
“The fire started from the children’s bedroom before it spread throughout the house. Unfortunately, the mother died in the bathroom as she was trying to douse the fire with water, but was overwhelmed by flames and smoke.”
He said the woman had asked all the children to remain in their bedroom while she attempted to put out the blaze.
“Only two bedrooms were burnt as well as the bathroom and toilet and those who were in the other bedroom survived.
“While I am not sure where the maid was, the children were shouting through the window for help from the other bedroom only to be helped by the neighbourhood watch security,” narrated Kutesera.
He said the survivors and the maid, who had started working for the family only three days ago, were pulled out through a window.
“We suspect that the maid had inhaled a lot of smoke and unfortunately she died after being pulled outside.”
Msasa Park community was in a state of shock yesterday as news of the inferno spread. Neighbours were seen milling around the house as they sought to come to terms with what had transpired.

By A Correspondent- An unidentified woman was found dead at the corner of George Silundika and 10th Avenue in Bulawayo this morning. It is suspected that she succumbed to the cold weather.
There was a light drizzle on Sunday afternoon amid cold temperatures that dropped to about seven degrees at night.
Witnesses said the police were called to the scene early in the morning to collect the body.
“We knew her from around the city, she would go out of the city and buy some goods to sell. However, there was a time that her goods were stolen. I think it was three or so years ago and she was never the same again,” said one witness.
Vendors who sell their wares at the corner have since abandoned it saying the place has to be cleansed before they resume business.
Money-changers were seen milling around the scene going about their business.

Madzibaba Reginald who leads a sect worshipping near Graneville Cemetery went on to claim that the Covid-19 pandemic does not affect his followers and are yet to go for vaccination.
“We were yet to receive the message about the ban for churches to conduct services but we respect and follow spiritual orders more since human leaders also seek spiritual guidance,” said Madzibaba Reginald.
“Although we do not defy government orders as a church we follow spiritual orders and concerning vaccination, none of us here has been vaccinated.
“Since we were unaware about these Covid-19 restrictive measures, we usually give announcements to our followers after the service and we will inform them about this,” said Madzibaba Reginald.

Another shrine along Willowvale Road led by one Madzibaba Jeremiah was gathered while conducting prayers during the lockdown.
Several apostolic churches on Sunday defied the Covid-19 gatherings ban with some claiming that they follow spiritual orders
“We had gathered to inform our followers about the government orders and they complied,” said Madzibaba Jeremiah.
“These few people are here to receive prayers and leave the shrine,” he said.
One of the Johanne Masowe yeChishanu leader Madzibaba Moses urged some of his fellow leaders to comply with government directives to save lives from the pandemic.
“Our government has put these measures to save lives from Covid-19 that has taken lives across the globe so there is a need to comply with the restrictive measures set,” said Madzibaba Moses.
“Those who are defying the measures must face disciplinary measures since the measures have been put to save people’s health.
“I complied with the measures set and we will gather when the government says it is safe,” he said.

The gang, which is being represented by Mr Langton Mhunhu of Mhungu Associates Law Firm, appeared before Chipinge magistrate, Mrs Elizabeth Hanzi, on Tuesday.
They are facing stock theft charges as defined in Section 114 (2) (a) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.
The Sibiya brothers pleaded not guilty and were remanded out of custody on a bail of $10 000 each.
Gurudza was remanded in custody after failing to raise the $10 000 bail. Enock also appeared before the same court last Friday facing charges of defeating or obstructing the course of justice.
He allegedly tried to stop witnesses from giving their statements to the investigation officers.
Prosecutor, Mr Thukani Zondwayo told the court that between September last year and May 30, the gang connived on four different occasions to steal stray cattle.
“David Sibiya would assign his accomplices to look for stray cattle around Chipinge. “During the night they would then drive the targeted cattle to a secluded place and slaughter them. The Sibiya brothers would then transport the carcasses to Sithabile Hlunhupi’s house in Gaza.
“Enock would look for buyers and the gang would share the proceeds equally,” said Mr Zondwayo.

Evans Rusike has been linked with a move to AmaZulu who will be playing in the CAF Champions League next season.
The Zimbabwean striker will be a free agent at the end of this month as his three-year contract, signed in 2018, with SuperSport United will not be renewed.
According to NewsDay, Usuthu have reignited their interest in the player and are pushing to add him in their squad for the coming campaign.
The Durban-based side was first linked with the player earlier this year but SuperSport decided against releasing him.
An unnamed source told the publication: “There are a number of possible suitors who have shown genuine interest in him, but Amazulu are the frontrunners in the chase for his signature. He might have struggled last season, but it was because he had just recovered from a serious injury.”
Rusike’s former club Maritzburg United was reportedly also keeping tabs on him but it’s unknown if the KZN outfit has remained among the potential suitors.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

By A Correspondent| Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) on Wednesday 16 June 2021 commenced disciplinary hearing proceedings against Peter Kudzai Mushonga, a 29 year-old prison officer, who is accused of insulting President Emmerson Mnangagwa and some traditional leaders.
Mushonga, who is represented by Kudzai Choga of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, appeared before a disciplinary tribunal held at Chinhoyi Remand Prison answering to charges of contravening some provisions of ZPCS regulations namely section 3(1) of the Prisons (Staff) (Discipline) Regulations for allegedly using traitorous or disloyal words regarding Mnangagwa and his government.
ZPCS is also accusing Mushonga of being guilty of an act, conduct, disorder or neglect of duty to the prejudice of good order or discipline as defined in section 46 of the Prisons (Staff) (Discipline) Regulations.
According to ZPCS, Mushonga insulted Mnangagwa and some traditional leaders, who were paying some respect to the statue of Mbuya Nehanda on 25 May 2021 by commenting on his Facebook account on 26 May 2021 that he wished if those people kneeling before the statue could go mad.
Mnangagwa presided over the unveiling of a towering statue in central Harare on 25 May 2021 honouring Mbuya Nehanda, a 19th century anti-colonialist heroine and a spirit medium, who was hanged by colonialists for leading a rebellion against white occupation while some traditional leaders knelt down before the statue and performed some traditional rituals.
During the disciplinary hearing proceedings, ZPCS brought in three witnesses who are all prison officers to testify against Mushonga, who denied the charge and argued that his Facebook account had been hacked. The disciplinary hearing will continue on Friday 25 June 2021.
The prison officer has already appeared at Chinhoyi Magistrates Court, where his trial on charges of undermining authority of or insulting President Mnangagwa will commence on 23 June 2021.
Mushonga is the latest prison guard to be hauled before a disciplinary hearing facing charges of being a traitor and being disloyal to Mnangagwa.
In 2018, ZPCS charged John Mahlabera, a 36 year-old prison officer in Chiredzi with insulting Mnangagwa through posting some political comments on social media.
Mahlabera allegedly posted a message on micro blogging site Twitter, which reads; “Come to Chiredzi my president”. The ZPCS said Mahlabera posted this message after an opposition MDC political party rally that was held at Jerera Growth Point in Zaka in Masvingo province, which was addressed by opposition party leader Nelson Chamisa.
ZPCS said by posting such a message on Twitter, Mahlabera showed loyalty to Chamisa and disloyalty to President Mnangagwa.
The ZPCS charged that Mahlabera’s conduct was disgraceful to Mnangagwa and the prison officer had no right whatsoever to act in the manner he did.

DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns have reportedly ended their chase for Zimbabwe international Divine Lunga and while shifting focus to his Warriors teammate Kuda Mahachi.
Lunga has been on the Masandawana radar for months and the Golden Arrows hierarchy has openly revealed the club will not stand in his way but reports in South Africa suggest that Abafana Bes’thende’s asking price for the former Chicken Inn star forced Sundowns to look for alternatives.
Both Kick Off and Soccer Laduma, renowned football publications across the Limpopo, are reporting that Sundowns are now on a mission to bring back Mahachi to Chloorkop.
Mahachi made 13 appearance for the Brazilians in the 2014/15 season after joining them from Highlanders but was loaned to Arrows the following season.
While at the KwaZulu Natal-based side, where he stayed for three seasons, the diminutive winger attracted interest from Orlando Pirates, sho signed him, but he could not live up to expectations and was eventually sold to SuperSport United.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

CAF president Patrice Motsepe has revealed that they are considering forming an African Super League.
The competition will be similar to that which had been planned for Europe but was scrapped after a backlash.
According to Motsepe, the concept of the proposed Super League is already in discussion and the confederation plans to learn from the failed European tournament in coming up with the best implementation.
The South African businessman said in a statement posted on CAF website: “We are assessing and in preliminary discussions to start an inclusive and broadly supported and beneficial CAF African Super League.
“We have been following the attempts by some top European clubs to form a Euro Super League and will learn from their experience and pitfalls.”
The idea of the African Super League was first mooted by Fifa president Gianni Infantino when Motsepe assumed office in March.
According to a report by Reuters, Infantino suggested the league would have 20 permanent member clubs, as well as others who would qualify via regional play-offs. He predicted it would bring in US$3-billion in five years.- Soccer24 Zimbabwe

The incident happened near Mushagashe Business Centre, 40 km from the city of Masvingo.
The injured passengers are admitted at Masvingo General Hospital after they were stabbed and stripped of their valuables.
According to The Mirror, the Boundary Express bus was attacked by six men armed with pistols, machetes and knives near Mushagashe Business Centre at around midnight just after the Masvingo-Harare tollgate.
The armed robbers stabbed several passengers before stripping them of their valuables.
The bus was coming from South Africa and it is parked at Masvingo Central Police.
A report written by the private consultancy Africa Risk Consulting (ARC) promises to reignite questions about the capture of Zimbabwe’s economy by cartels and politicians that were raised in the report on Cartel Dynamics published by Maverick Citizen earlier this year.
The nearly 50-page report, titled Zimbabwe Political Economy Stakeholder Map, was published in March 2021. It is circulating widely in Zimbabwe but is confidential and not available online. We have, however, confirmed its authenticity.
ARC is a reputable company with operations in many African countries that provides business intelligence informing the investment community. It says the report is based on “open-source research” into “extensive public records, research in subscription access, corporate compliance and legal databases, free-to-use and restricted access online media, local, regional and international news outlets, news media archives, social media, government and corporate websites and Africa-specialist journals”.
In a webinar several weeks ago discussing illicit financial transfers in Zimbabwe, former Zimbabwe Finance Minister Tendai Biti described the Cartel Dynamics report as “only scratching the surface of corruption”. However, unlike the report published by Maverick Citizen which focuses on five case studies of sectors of the economy that are alleged to have been captured by cartels (roads, fuel, agriculture, tobacco and mining), the ARC report focuses on what it calls “the most significant players”. It describes who it says “the key individuals are, their stake in the system, how they operate, and their main professional and personal affiliates”.
In the introduction to the report, ARC says that this is necessary because “Zimbabwe is rapidly moving toward a Russian-style oligarchical system. It’s becoming a regional hub for laundering illicit wealth that is fuelling violent conflict.” However, ARC suggests that putting its information into the public domain is in the public interest because “this system of governance hasn’t yet been consolidated”.
The report does not provide a detailed analysis of its findings; it notes that “the world is rapidly connecting the dots between the decline of democracy and rise of authoritarianism, kleptocracy, and corrupt transnational networks. The international community is increasingly aware of how these links manifest in Zimbabwe to the detriment of its people.”
Its “stakeholder map” is drawn under three headings:
Under each heading, it provides names, political connections and economic and business interests. The top nine listed under “business acolytes” are Kudakwashe Tagwirei; Nic Van Hoogstraten; Billy Rautenbach; the late John Bredenkamp; Zunaid Moti; Tafadzwa Musarara; Kamlesh Pattni; the Macmillan family and Simon Rudland.
Almost all of those named have extensive business interests in South Africa, as well as dual citizenship; in the cases of Moti, who it says “boasts of his close relationship with Mnangagwa, although he insists that it did not give his businesses any undue advantage” and Rudland who the report alleges (based on court papers) is worth $100-million and has “a complex web of companies in South Africa, Zimbabwe and reportedly also in Mozambique”.
Significantly, the economic areas linked to the nine correspond almost exactly with those identified in the cartel dynamics report published by Maverick Citizen in February: gold, tobacco, agriculture.
Allegations of corruption are not new to most of the “business acolytes” named. However, given his South African nationality and the location of the head office of the Moti Group in Sandton, Maverick Citizen contacted Moti for comment. His response was fast and furious.
Moti says he has not seen the report previously. On the issue of his relationship with Mnangagwa he says that “the relationship is limited to a professional one which originated because of President Mnangagwa’s understanding of the benefits a project like African Chrome Fields (ACF) would have to the economy of Zimbabwe”.
His response continues: “Meetings need to be held with all levels and departments of government in order to apply for permits and licenses, and this includes the highest level…”
“Mr Moti invested in Zimbabwe in the first quarter of 2014 prior to having any interaction with President Mnangagwa or Mr Chiwenga, and his interaction with them commenced with the introduction to them of the aluminothermic technology during the latter part of 2014, and more particularly in the beginning of 2015.
“Mr Moti is in the business of mining and beneficiation and would like to leave politics to politicians.”
Asked to respond to the more general allegations of grand corruption in Zimbabwe Moti responded as follows:
“… corruption is endemic in most parts of Africa, and it is an aspect that each government has to deal with independently and according to the degree and the depth of the corruption. Mr Moti’s involvement in Zimbabwe relates to mining operations and not politics …”
Finally, Moti included in his response a letter sent to Tara O’Connor, the Executive Director of ARC, stating that the report “will cause irreparable harm to my reputation and substantial economic harm to the Moti group” and demanding that the section of the report relating to Moti be retracted within 24 hours “failing which I intend pursuing legal action against you personally as well as ARC”.
This week O’Connor responded to Maverick Citizen’s questions about what ARC’s response to Moti would be, saying she was “not in any position to answer questions on a confidential report that we prepared solely for the use of [a] client”.
The political elite
When it comes to “the ruling political elite” the ARC list is headed by President Emmerson Mnangagwa whose personal fortune it says is “estimated at $500-million” with “substantive stakes in at least four national banks, several gold mines and equity interests in transport and agribusiness companies,” although represented by third parties.
Mnangagwa’s wealth contrasts grotesquely with an annual per capita income in Zimbabwe of approx $1,400 (estimated by the World Bank in 2019). A June 2021 Economic Update on Zimbabwe by the World Bank estimates that 6.6 million people are living in extreme poverty.
Vice President Chiwenga is second on the list and interestingly, Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube features third. He is described as someone whose “promise of an ‘ambitious anti-corruption strategy’ rang hollow to finance officials. Finance officials in Washington (US) claim that Ncube was given the political cover to promise a crackdown on grand corruption at the heart of the government to get much-needed money into Zimbabwe.”
The Reserve Bank Governor follows hot on his heels.
The report ends with an incomplete analysis of Zimbabwe’s “military and security elite”, in particular the Joint Operation Centre (JOC), a body which it says includes officials from the military, police and civil service and is “the ultimate decision making power within ZANU-PF.”
Approached for comment this week, Piers Pigou, of the International Crisis Group said the ARC report was important because there are tendencies afoot to want to “airbrush corruption” out of analyses of Zimbabwe’s economic performance and prospects. But doing so “bypasses the need for deep democratic and economic reform” and the introduction of meaningful accountability by political and economic elites. He hoped that ARC would stand by its findings, despite the pressure it might come under.
The ruling Zanu-PF party has been rocked by serious infighting ahead of provincial congresses, with clashes being reported in Mashonaland West, Mashonaland Central, Midlands and other provinces.
It emerged that the names of President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga were being dropped to cow rivals while promoting their horses, a situation that has also exposed deep-rooted factionalism in the party.
The fights are said to be serious enough that in Mashonaland West province the party acting national commissar Patrick Chinamasa read the riot act to curb a potentially explosive situation.
Chinamasa’s intervention was forced by fights over the alleged imposition of Abia Mujere by former provincial chairman Ziyambi Ziyambi, who was recently appointed to the politburo.
This has triggered objections from a camp said to be linked to Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs minister Mary Mliswa-Chikoka.
“The communication is to inform you that Cde Abia Mujere is, and remains the appropriate acting chairman for Mashonaland West province pending the conduct of provincial elections scheduled to take place countrywide at a date to be announced in due course,” Chinamasa said.
“This clarification should put to rest the dispute with some party members over this matter. The province is advised that no co-options for any vacant posts should be made without authorisation from the acting secretary for the commissariat.”
The letter was copied to the party chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri and secretary for administration, Obert Mpofu.
There have been fights in Mashonaland Central province where provincial chairman Kazembe Kazembe is reportedly blocking individuals who are preparing to challenge him in the polls.
There have been reports that Kazembe has been growing increasingly unpopular with party structures in the province and that he is using intimidatory tactics to hold on to the post of chairperson.
Insiders alleged that some of Kazembe’s tactics included waging in a smear campaign against his rival, Walter Makamba claiming that Mnangagwa did not like the businessman because he was alleged to be a G40 supporter.
Businessman Tafadzwa Musarara is also said to be interested in the party provincial chairmanship.
Kazembe, however, dismissed the allegations, saying no individual within the party had the power to block anyone from contesting in an election.
“What happened in the provincial co-ordinating committee is not unique (clashes). A lot happens in politics and everywhere. People gossip, drop names, assassinate each other’s characters, and do all sorts of things every day and everywhere,” he told NewsDay yesterday.
“We don’t condone such behaviour. I have also been a target of these dirty tricks where people create fake stories about me. Everyday you hear of people plotting to remove the chairman but I’m not moved. That comes with the terrain. I am focusing on working for the party and the people.”
In the Midlands, sources said there were serious fights over who should lead the province.
From the very first time I knew of you as First Republican President and the many occasions we met especially on the football field from 1983, one thing in your leadership remained constant, your love for Mother Zambia and your love for football.
It is with a heavy heart that I say goodbye to you President Kenneth Kaunda.
I am and will always be a proud member of the “KK11” a National Team that played in your honour and was aptly named after you.
May your dear soul rest in eternal peace, knowing the immense impact you made on all Zambians, Africans and the World at large .#KK #KK11 #kennethkaunda #Leadership #ZambiaMourns

Tinashe Sambiri| MDC Alliance vice chairperson Hon Job Sikhala, who is also a legal practitioner has said Justice Erica Ndewere is a tough lady who refused to compromise professionalism to please Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa.
Mnangagwa fired Justice Ndewere last week and analysts say the Zanu PF leader wants to muzzle independent voices in the judiciary system.
“This woman must be proud of herself. The people of Zimbabwe are proud of her.
She is so brave that Mnangagwa quaked in his shoes and decided to fire her.
What should make her proud is that the people of Zimbabwe are fully on her side.
On Mnangagwa’s are only dogs and reptiles.
Very sad in Zimbabwe in our judiciary. One of the most impartial adjudicators in Zimbabwe who stood her against the forces of judiciary capture has been forced off the bench.
When you eliminate one, other great people of integrity will emerge. I am with you in pain,” Hon Sikhala wrote on Twitter.
By Dr Masimba Mavaza | Zimbabwe woke up to a report by Afro Barometer which was so negative to the efforts being made in the democratisation of Zimbabwe. The Afrobarometer round eight survey in Zimbabwe 18-06-2021 brought out some points which motivated me to explore this survey.
What exactly is Afrobarometer?
Afrobarometer is supposed to be a non-partisan, pan-African research institution conducting public attitude surveys on democracy, governance, the economy and society in 30+ countries repeated on a regular cycle. They claim to be the world’s leading source of high-quality data on what Africans are thinking. Afrobarometer is projected as the world’s leading research project on issues that affect ordinary African men and women. They are supposed to collect and publish high-quality, reliable statistical data on Africa which is freely available from and to the public.
Its secretariat headquarters are in Accra, Ghana, registered as a limited company by guarantee by the Registrar-General’s Department. This was Founded 1999.
The surveys are carried out by region through a partnership of the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD Ghana),the Institute for Justice and Reconciliation in South Africa, and the Institute for Development Studies at the University of Nairobi. The Institute for Democracy, Citizenship and Public Policy in Africa at the University of Cape Town and the Department of Political Science at Michigan State University are technical partners.
Afrobarometer surveys are conducted in more than 30 African countries and are repeated on a regular cycle.
Afrobarometer achieves this measurement through a series of face-to-face interviews with a random sample of 1,200, 1,600 or 2,400 people in each country.Because the instrument asks standard set of questions, countries can be systematically compared. Trends in public attitudes are tracked over time. Results are shared with decision makers, policy advocates, civic educators, journalists, researchers, donors and investors, as well as average Africans who wish to become more informed and active citizens.
The Afrobarometer was founded by America through Professor Michael Bratton of Michigan State University and Professor Emmanuel Gyimah-Boadi of CDD Ghana. The two had the support of another American paid Professor Robert Mattes of the University of Cape Town (while based at IDASA), Mattes is now senior advisor and a board member at Afrobarometer, and is on American payroll,Bratton is a former director of Afrobarometer and now senior advisor and a board member. Gyimah-Boadi was the executive director and is currently the Interim CEO and board chair of Afrobarometer and emeritus professor at the University of Ghana.
So it is clear that their opinion and survey is meant to please their sponsors and handlers. The fact that they rely on the funding of others it is expected for them to embellish the survey results to reflect the wish and the will of their sponsors.
The Africans are made to believe that Afrobarometer’s aim is to give the public a voice in policymaking by providing high-quality public opinion data to policymakers, policy advocates, civil society organizations, academics, news media, donors and investors, and ordinary Africans. But in actual fact the barometer feeds the handlers and investors with the negative information they collate against Zimbabwe. The outcome of their surveys are tailor made and if the country is already in the top ten priority of regime change project the Afrobarometer prepares the mind of people and poisons it with poison. By the time the regime change activists start fighting Zimbabwe the world has already been sold a dummy and the public opinion will have been set against the government. So the survey gurus are political activists and the list of their founders shows that they can never come out with anything reasonable on Zimbabwe. The Afrobarometer peruses their regime change goal by what they say on their website.
“Funding from a variety of organizations and institutions allows us to pursue this goal.”
Now the roiling 8 survey which issued a damning report on Zimbabwe democracy and meant to vilify Polad was funded by countries who pretend to love Zimbabwe yet they are enemies of our country.
Financial support for Round 8 has been provided by:
• Sweden
• Mo Ibrahim Foundation
• Open Society Foundations
• William and Flora Hewlett Foundation
• U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) via the U.S. Institute of Peace
Funders for previous rounds have also included the U.S. State Department, National Endowment for Democracy, UK Department for International Development (DFID), World Bank, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Duke University China Research Center, Transparency International, Institute for Security Studies, Royal Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (RDMFA), Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA), and Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).
Donations are supposed to help Afrobarometer give voice to African citizens but unfortunately they are helping Anyi African spirit to manifest in the minds of the West.
Afrobarometer like any other survey companies is supposed to use national probability samples designed to generate a sample that is a representative cross-section of all citizens of voting age in a given country. The goal is to give every adult citizen an equal and known chance of being selected for an interview.
Unfortunately when it comes to Zimbabwe the Afrobarometer only take its samples from towns. It is not a secret that the towns of Zimbabwe are predominantly opposition. So the Afrobarometer only carries a survey among the Oppostion members who are in towns and publish the results as authentic. The system itself is biased unfair and already designed to come up with an anti government opinion. It is this opinion they run with and publish world wide to tarnish the good image of Zimbabwe and its government.
Afrobarometer is supposed to use random selection methods at every stage of sampling; which means they are supposed to go to Uzumba Matamba pfungwe, Mutoko, Chiredzi and many rural areas. They should carry their survey in Muzarabani and each and every province in order to be fair human and indeed to give a none biased opinion.
They must be sampling at all stages with probability proportionate to population size wherever possible to ensure that larger (i.e., more populated) geographic units have a proportionally greater probability of being chosen into the sample. This the Afrobarometer does not do. They are aware that once they do this they will not get the results their handlers expect.
The sampling universe normally includes all citizens age 18 and older but Afrobarometer concentrated on few citizens. As a standard practice, they are supposed to exclude people living in institutionalised settings, such as students in dormitories, patients in hospitals, and persons in prisons or nursing homes. But most of their interviewees are students and obviously they are highly fed with opposition propaganda.
The system used by Afrobarometer when it comes to Zimbabwe excludes the distinctive ethnic or language groups. They are left out of the sample and only those in areas known to be pro opposition are the ones who are included in the surveys.
Zimbabweans must not be fooled by the name Afrobarometer. This is a well oiled system sponsored by the West to undermine the African governments and at this time their emphasis is on Zimbabwe. Again it should be noted that there is Eurobarometer.
Both Afrobarometer and Eurobarometer are cross-national comparative survey projects focusing on population sample surveys. This is a project and Zimbabwe is vilified by a Project. Other related projects are the Arabbarometer (Arab region), Asianbarometer (Asia) and Latinobarometer (Latin America). Each of the barometers is implemented independently although in each country, a national research team administers a country-wide face-to-face survey using standardized survey instruments to compile the required micro-level data under a common research framework and research methodology.
You can ask yourself why do the Americans sponsor this project. Why is the main sponsor a ministry of foreign affairs. The answer is not hidden in the cloud. It is clearly in the open.
Now coming the results of round 8. The opinion is meant to split the Zimbabwean’s commitment to the second republic. The opinion purports you show that
today, more people than at any other stage since Robert Mugabe’s ouster in a military coup in 2017, believe that there are defects in hits successor’s ruling machinery. The onslaught on Mnangagwa started just the day he was inaugurated. The opposition to Mnangagwa was motivated by the fact that the president has refused to give Chamisa a GNU he was praying for. When it comes to Zimbabwe the WEST wants the losing parties in elections to get ministerial positions. They want Zimbabwe to reward the losers. This became a major reason which caused Mnangagwa to be an enemy of the West. The opinion by the Afrobarometer sought to cause mistrust and to turn the people against their government. They allege that Grievances are widespread amongst the urban and the rural, women and men and the young and old albeit to slightly varying degrees. They claim that This social, economic and political discontent is breeding a silent social war. This on its on is a well elaborated effort to opinionated the Zimbabwean public to prepare for a none existent social war. The Afrobarometer in their comment contain that This is prompted by the government’s incompetence at the front leading to a weak social contract, economic hardships at home, food shortages, partisan institutions, and the ruling party’s growing illegitimacy..
In actual fact this is all bull. The opinions published by Afrobarometer are just a tick box expectations of their paymasters. What the Afrobarometer neglected to say is the fact that opinions do not directly translated into actual votes. They however boosted the MDC A by saying “there is no an alternative popular and overt electoral support for the resilient MDC Alliance-which despite state engineered weapons of mass destruction- has remained engraved in its social base and politically competitive.” The survey pretended to be setting the MDC A led by Chamisa & ZANU PF led by Mnangagwa on a collision track. But the truth is the opinion is designed to vilify ZANU OF and raise the awareness on MDC A whose popularity was falling after it split in several fragments.
The Afrobarometer claim that These two parties Chamisa’s and ZANU OF are the only statistically significant as per respondents.
The idea in the dark corners of Afrobarometer is to prop up Chamisa as an indomitable lion and an in defeat able champion.
Afrobarometer is shamelessly portraying a fallacy that
“The ZANU PF government’s rural legitimacy is evidently waning following the loss of urban legitimacy in the 1990s. The majority of the citizenry in the rural areas (62%) feel that the country is going in the wrong direction. However, this does not directly translate to the MDC A’s rural legitimacy.” This opinion must never be taken seriously it is only the fruits of a project regime change. The idlers is to feed the rural folks with falsehoods so that they will have their trust in ED shaken.
It should be clearly pointed out the handlers of the Afrobarometer are hoping that MDC Chamisa will make this is a big opportunity to harvest and harness the perceived growing rural discontent and articulate a vision based on the quotidian livelihoods concerns of the people and perhaps a wider vision of Development of Industries in Rural Areas.
Capitalising on this fake opinion the social media activists started insulting ZANU OF supporters as uneducated. It should be mentioned that free education for all was brought in by ZANU PF.
Powered by the President ED’s push to embrace the youth Zimbabwe now sees many youths joining ZANU PF and urging many youths to register to vote. ZANU PF government is gaining confidence across all demographic groupings. 61% of those above 56 years believe the country is going in the right direction. 67% of those who are 18-35 years and 71% of those between 36 and 55 years believe the same. The confidence for the ZANU PF government is largely shared among the older generation, the young generations and every other person in diaspora.
The problems raised in Midlands are not reflecting in the failure of the president. The president simply needs to be bold and re assign two divisive leaders in Midlands to different ministries and even put them in different provinces. Zimbabwe is for everyone so these two main godfathers and dividing factors of Midlands can be reassigned in the name of the party to other provinces or better still could be assigned to the head office. These two are cde July Moyo and cde Owen NCUBE. Their long dangerous methods and spreading of tribalism will not help us and this is what Afrobarometer used to vilify the wonderful province of Midlands.
The opinion by Afrobarometer is wrong and trying to demolarise ZANU PF. The opinion states that the government by and large is losing rural legitimacy, the data shows that the greater share of loyalty that remains is concentrated in Mashonaland provinces with less people, by comparison to other provinces, believing the economic condition is bad as follows: (1) Mashonaland Central (53%), (2) Mashonaland East (62%) (3) Mashonaland West (67%). All the other seven provinces have above 70% of people saying the economic condition is bad.
The opinion gives the MDC A ideas that “there might be a need for a targeted strategy to break the Mashonaland authoritarian axis of conditioned & structured politics.”
The shameless Afrobarometer gave the country no hope. They say Only 35% think the economic situation will improve. This is the power of the opinion. It appeals to your mind and destroys your thinking. We must know that the country needs hope. Hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen.
Hope is an optimistic state of mind that is based on an expectation of positive outcomes with respect to events and circumstances in one’s life or the world at large. As a verb, its definitions include: “expect with confidence” and “to cherish a desire with anticipation. ZANU PF is a hopeful party and our people know that we will get there.
We must never be mistaken opinion is the greatest tool in destroying a government. Most political issues are heavily framed in order to persuade voters to vote for a particular candidate this is what Afrobarometer seeks to achieve with Zimbabwe. They preparing Zimbabweans to be divided lot in opinion. Public opinion can be influenced by public relations and the political media and the social media. Afrobarometer gives that opinion a rare legitimacy. So that if the opposition loses elections they will claim that it was rigged and they will be relying on the wrong legitimated opinion Additionally, mass media utilizes a wide variety of advertising techniques to get their message out and change the minds of people. By its very nature, the democratic process spurs citizens to form opinions on a number of issues. Voters are called upon to choose candidates in elections, to consider constitutional amendments, and to approve or reject municipal taxes and other legislative proposals. Almost any matter on which the executive or legislature has to decide may become a public issue if a significant number of people wish to make it one. The political attitudes of these persons are often stimulated or reinforced by outside agencies—a crusading newspaper, an interest group, or a government agency or official. In this case Zimbabwe is being sold on an Afrobarometer wrapping paper.
The English philosopher and economist Jeremy Bentham (1748–1832) saw the greatest difficulty of the legislator as being “in conciliating the public opinion, in correcting it when erroneous, and in giving it that bent which shall be most favourable to produce obedience to his mandates.”
Zimbabwe must challenge and reject the regime change agenda coming through the Afrobarometer missopinion project.
This is a project fully sponsored by those who hate our country. What can one expect from such malcontents. Zimbabwe does not vote through fake opinions. The opinions of our Zimbabwean people do mater. We show our our opinion in the ballot box.
Zimbabwe will never be divided by a Neo colonialist opinion rigging project.
It is the wish of the founding President Kenneth Kaunda’s family to have his remains taken around the country.
This is according to Vice President Inonge Wina, who has since announced that government has agreed to respect the wish of the family.
In a statement issued, Mrs Wina said the programme for the Provincial visits, will commence in Choma, Southern Province on Wednesday June 23and end in Lusaka Province on Monday July 5 2021.
She said there will be no physical body viewing, however the entire procession including the church service will be carried live on TV.
“This arrangement will enable the millions of viewers at home to follow the proceedings and have a closer view of the remains of the late President. The Provincial Programmes shall include route lining where residents in the Provinces shall line designated routes to view the cortege and pay their last respects. However, in order to control anticipated crowds, the Military shall manage these Provincial Programmes to ensure orderliness and compliance to COVID-19 measures,” She said.
Mrs Wina said in each provincial capital, there shall be a short church ceremony conducted by the Military, in conjunction with the United Church of Zambia (UCZ) to which Dr Kaunda belonged.
She said he Military will be on hand to ensure compliance adding that physical attendance to the provincial church services will be extremely limited and short in nature.
The Vice President said both the route lining and church services shall be broadcasted live on television, radio and social media and so members of the public are encouraged to follow the proceedings on the various media platforms in order to avoid mass gatherings.
And Mrs Wina said Government has designated Friday, July 2, as the date for the State to accord Dr Kaunda a Ceremonial State Funeral to allow for the participation of international dignitaries.
She said the State Funeral will be held at Heroes Stadium here in Lusaka.
“Once again, the Government will ensure the strictest adherence to COVID-19 Guidelines by firmly restricting participation to the State Funeral to Heads of State, to be accompanied by one official. All the relevant COVID-19 measures, including social distancing, will be managed by the Military during the State Funeral,” she said.
Mrs Wina said Dr Kaunda will be put to rest at the Presidential Burial Site on Wednesday July 7, at a very private ceremony for family and selected invited mourners only and will be live on television, radio, and social media to allow Zambians and the international community to follow the proceedings.
She further said in respecting Dr Kaunda’s legacy, party regalia or party symbols of any kind, including party-branded face masks, will not be allowed at any activity during the period of mourning.
By A Correspondent- MDC Alliance activists Netsai Marova and Cecilia Chimbiri have been summoned to court to answer fresh charges of inciting public violence after they allegedly called for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s resignation during a protest last year.
According to the summons dated June 18, 2021, the duo is set to appear at the Harare Magistrates Court on July 13 this year.
It is alleged that on the February 19, 2020 at Morgan Richard Tsvangirai House, Marova, Chimbiri and several other MDC activists unlawfully demonstrated while waving placards.
The cards were written “ED enda”, “ED must go”.
They are also accused of singing derogatory songs.
Marova and Chimbiri have several cases that are pending at the courts and have been incarcerated at Chikurubi Maximum Female Prison in pre-trial detention on several occasions.
Jailed activist Makomborero Haruziviishe, and students activists Alan Moyo, Denford Ngadziore, who also have other pending matters of inciting public violence at the courts, are alleged to have been with the duo on the day the offence was committed.
The 26th June is the International Day in Support of Torture Victims
This would be a good time for Parliament to fulfil its constitutional duty to ensure that the Constitution is fully implemented by resolving that the Government should introduce a Bill against torture. All of us who share a common humanity must be concerned that torture should be eradicated, in Zimbabwe and throughout the world.
Attached is a Model Bill for consideration by the Government, Parliament and citizens. If anyone has comments to make that would improve the Bill, please send them to [email protected]
Existing Legislation Inadequate
In Chapter 4, the Constitution of Zimbabwe provides that no person may be subjected to physical or psychological torture [section 53], that the right not to be tortured may not be limited by any law and that no person may violate the right [section 86(3)]. This makes the right an “absolute” or “non-derogable” right, the violation of which is never justifiable under any circumstances.
It is sometimes suggested that these constitutional provisions and our criminal law render it unnecessary to take further steps to punish and combat torture. Past experience and our history give the lie to that suggestion – Zimbabweans cannot claim that torture does not occur here, and indeed it occurs to some extent throughout the world.
The Constitution itself recognises that general statements are not enough – which is why section 11 lays down that “the State must take all practical measures to protect the fundamental rights and freedoms enshrined in Chapter 4 and to promote their full realisation and fulfilment”.
Under the Criminal Law Code physical torture can be prosecuted as assault or, in serious cases, attempted murder. Other forms of torture, such as starving prisoners or detaining them under intolerable conditions, can be prosecuted as criminal abuse of duty on the part of the perpetrator [a crime for which the maximum sentence is 15 years’ imprisonment].
But to create a single clear crime of torture will indicate that the government is determined to eradicate it in all its manifestations.
The Need for a Comprehensive Act
A comprehensive Act penalising torture is needed to do the following:
1. To flesh out and give “teeth” to our Constitution, which in section 53 prohibits physical and psychological torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
2. To show that Zimbabwe accepts and takes seriously the universal norm that torture in all its forms is unacceptable.
3. To give weight to the international conventions that Zimbabwe is a party to, which prohibit torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, in particular the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.
4. To make all acts of torture a single criminal offence under the name “torture”, punishable as a grave offence, with acknowledgment of the fact that torture can never be justified.
5. To provide legal mechanisms for detecting it and providing redress for victims. This will not only help to eradicate torture but will also assist the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission carry out its function of protecting the public against abuse of power by public officers [section 243(1)(e) of the Constitution].
6. To lay down clear rules and instructions for the interrogation, treatment and custody of arrested persons and prisoners. This will give law enforcement officers authoritative guidelines to show them what is acceptable and what is not.
7. To support victims and ensure respect for their right to rehabilitation and redress.
What Should a Law Against Torture Contain?
An Act prohibiting torture should do the following:
· Define torture broadly to cover severe physical or mental pain or suffering inflicted by a public official, or inflicted with the consent or acquiescence of a public official, in order to obtain information from the person on whom it is inflicted or to punish, intimidate or coerce the person, or for a similar purpose. This is how it is defined in the Convention Against Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment [CAT].
· Criminalise torture as a standalone offence, providing appropriately serious punishments for it. Obedience to superior orders cannot be allowed as a defence.
· Ensure that the State’s courts have jurisdiction to try crimes involving torture which are committed outside the country, if:
· the perpetrator or the victim is a national of the State, or
· the perpetrator is found in the State and is not being extradited to the country where the crime took place.
· Provide for the arrest of suspected torturers and ensuring that they are brought to justice, either in the State where they have been arrested or in another State which has jurisdiction over them.
· Make crimes involving torture extraditable, i.e. ensuring that suspected perpetrators can be sent for trial in the countries where the crimes were committed.
· Prohibit the extradition of persons to any country if there are reasonable grounds to believe they may be tortured there.
· Provide for assistance to other States in the prosecution of perpetrators, for example by supplying evidence.
· Ensure that military personnel, police officers and all other law enforcement agents are trained to be aware that all forms of torture, or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, are prohibited.
· Require rules and regulations for the treatment and custody of arrested persons and prisoners to prevent all forms of torture and cruel, inhuman or degrading treatments or punishments.
· Enable victims of torture, or of any cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment, to lodge complaints and ensure that their complaints are properly and promptly investigated by the appropriate authorities.
· Enable victims of torture, or their dependants if they have died, to obtain redress including compensation and rehabilitation.
· Prohibit the use in court proceedings of statements extracted by torture.
Conclusion
This is what the UN Secretary General had to say about torture. Although he said it two years ago it is just as pertinent today:
“The prohibition of torture is absolute — under all circumstances. Yet this core principle is undermined every day in detention centres, prisons, police stations, psychiatric institutions and elsewhere …
Torture is a vicious attempt at breaking a person’s will. On this International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, I urge all States to end impunity for perpetrators and eradicate these reprehensible acts that defy our common humanity.”
By A Correspondent- The cost of living for a family of six surged by 13,4% to $40 680 this month, from $35 877 in April following relentless price hikes stemming from currency volatilities and market jitters triggered by an ad hoc law forcing businesses to peg prices at official rates, Consumer Council of Zimbabwe (CCZ) data showed.
Most Zimbabwean firms obtain their forex from the parallel market where rates spiked sharply following the introduction of Statutory Instrument (SI) 127 of 2021 early this month.
Black market rates have rocketed to $140:US$1, against about $85:US$1 at the foreign currency auction market.
Last week’s figure came as authorities began a ruthless crackdown on low-income earners’ vending cites in Harare and Chitungwiza, which will pile more misery on Zimbabweans who mostly survive on the informal sector, following massive de-industrialisation due to economic mismanagement.
“The cost of living as measured by the Consumer Council of Zimbabwe’s low-income urban earner monthly basket for a family of six increased from the end of April figure of $35 877,92 to 40 682,84 by June 9 2021, showing an increase of $4 804,92 or 13,39%,” the CCZ said.
“The food basket increased by $1 504,23 or 9,83% from $15 303,88 by end of April 2021 to $16 808,11 by June 9 2021.
“The price of detergents increased by $172,69 or 16,74% from $1 031,54 to $1 204,23,” the consumer watchdog said, noting that retailers ignored government pleas not to hike prices after the introduction of the SI.
“According to the recent survey, most suppliers and outlets did not reduce their prices in Zimbabwe dollars to align their pricing with the requirements of SI 127, instead they priced products higher in USD terms to make sure they get round about the same they were getting in local currency before SI 127 of 2021,” CCZ.
Under the SI, businesses were required to align their prices with the official exchange rate, but prices have shot up by about 40% since then, including in United States dollar terms.
“The food basket recorded an increase of 9,83% from $15 303,88 in April to $16 808,11 by June 9 2021,” CCZ said.
“The increases can be attributed to service providers who are consistently adjusting their prices to factor in exchange rate movements and transaction costs of buying forex on the parallel market,” it noted.
In May, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency said the average cost of living for a family of five rocketed to $28 853, with prices rocketing at a faster pace in Mashonaland Central, where consumers required $32 540 to fill up the family basket.
Bulawayo and Matabeleland North provinces required over $30 000.
At the heart of the price hikes was a switch by supermarkets to tracking parallel market rates in their pricing models, even after accessing foreign currency at the forex auction market.
Last week, several firms including the Zimbabwe Stock Exchangelisted National Foods were named in a list of forex abusers by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, which threatened to charge huge fines announced under SI 127.
Retailers have denied profiteering by manipulating a multiple pricing system currently obtaining on the market. But in a paper lodged with the Finance minister Mthuli Ncube spelling out its expectations for the upcoming midterm budget review, the Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers recently said that the sector had been held back by monthly fuel price hikes.
By A Correspondent- The Law Society of Zimbabwe (LSZ) has condemned social media attacks on its functionality at the weekend, saying they were meant to dissuade lawyers from executing their duty of guarding against constitutional violations.
LSZ said it had been a victim of social media attacks following its recent application at the courts, challenging the enactment of Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No 1) Act and Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendment (No 2) Act.
In a statement on Saturday, LSZ dismissed accusations that it was aligned to a political party and pledged to continue protecting the public from errant lawyers.
“In the past few months, the Law Society of Zimbabwe has become the target of attacks particularly since submitting an application challenging Constitutional Amendments No 1 and 2,” the LSZ statement read.
“It is clear from the provisions of the law that the Law Society has not veered from its objects amid inferences to the contrary by some characters that are aimed at soiling the image of the profession, the society and its membership. The decision to challenge the two amendments is within the remit of the Law Society’s objects of existence as provided for in section 53 of the Legal Practitioners Act.”
Their statement follows a series of tweets last Saturday by Presidential spokesperson George Charamba, who questioned the independence of the LSZ from political interference.
Charamba also accused it of being partisan, saying it was targeting indigenous law firms and favouring local white-owned firms while performing its regulatory mandate.
“A look at the so-called Law Society of Zimbabwe: Is it really a society of all lawyers? Is a society coercive? Whence comes its certification and regulatory powers? What is the mechanism for ensuring its so-called members are consulted regularly? How has it ensured the welfare of its members?” he tweeted.
“Why are spot-checks targeting indigenous law firms when some big white-originated firms have never been audited for years? Why does it associate with one political party when it claims to be a society of free professionals? Or like a political party, is it an association of politically like-minded people? Would all lawyers subscribe to this one party whose bidding the society does?”
But LSZ described Charamba’s accusations as mischievous and aimed at causing divisions within the profession for his personal benefit.
“While the Law Society can never be immune from constructive criticism, the poisonous social media rants from one individual is totally misplaced and a result of deficiency in information,” it said.
“There seems to be a clearly constructed narrative to create a schism or rift within the profession establishing opposing camps along racial or political lines. This we believe is aimed at weakening the unity of the profession and tarnishing the Law Society’s reputation and public standing as an independent professional body.”
By A Correspondent- A female ECD teacher from Chambuta Primary School in Chiredzi was recently flogged and injured by a parent who accused her of whipping his ECD A pupil.
Gilbert Mahutse, 36, of Kwai Village, Headman Masivamele, Sengwe area flogged Zadziso Machimbirike with a stick.
Mahutse appeared before Chiredzi Magistrate Misheck Brian Munyaradzi on Thursday and pleaded guilty as charged.
The State proved that on April 15 2021, Mahutse approached Machimbirike and assaulted her with a stick in front of her school children.
The court heard that Mahutse assaulted Machimbirike because she had assaulted his child.
Mahutse, however, pleaded for leniency arguing that he had since realised his mistake and apologised to the complainant. He also said that he was helping with hospital bills for the treatment of the teacher’s wounds Masvingo Mirror reports.

However, the couple is struggling to take care of the babies since the husband, 18-year-old Leonard Maenza, is not formally employed.
The teen mum had no idea that hers was a multiple pregnancy, neither did she have a scan or pre-natal care and check-ups.
She said it was a shock discovery that she was having not one or two, but three babies.
The teen mother gave birth naturally at Bindura Hospital on May 3 and together with her husband, Leonard, they are overjoyed.
But the couple has no financial means to look after the family adequately and they are relying on well-wishers.

By A Correspondent- The ruling Zanu-PF party has been rocked by serious infighting ahead of provincial congresses, with clashes being reported in Mashonaland West, Mashonaland Central, Midlands and other provinces.
By A Correspondent- Speaker of the National Assembly, Jacob Mudenda last Thursday said citizens were failing to hold Parliament and the Executive accountable by questioning the actions of their MPs when executing their oversight role.
Mudenda made the remarks in Bulawayo during a public lecture on Parliament’s role on public finance management, which was organised by the Lupane State University (LSU).
He said citizens should petition Parliament and demand accountability as it was their constitutional right to do so.
“I am happy that you are saying Parliament has not exercised its oversight role well. I agree, but at the same time, the problem comes back to you as citizens because you have been failing to engage Parliament,” Mudenda said.
“You should call your MPs and inquire on your Constituency Development Funds. Crying does not help, you should not only talk, but you must take action. The civic society organisations (CSOs) are good at criticising, but they do not offer solutions, they only talk from a distance.
“You should call the MPs and councillors to account. There were complaints earlier about the roads in Bulawayo, go and call your councillors. You are the ones that elected the councillors and the MPs. It is you citizens that pass the budget. If you come today and say we no longer want our MP, you use section 129 of the Constitution to recall MPs.”
Mudenda said CSOs should influence citizens to recall non-performing MPs and councillors.
“Your MPs and councillors have let you down, why have you not petitioned Parliament in terms of section 149 of the Constitution (on the right to petition Parliament)?”
The Speaker also challenged scholars to critique and analyse Bills before they are passed in Parliament.
“I exhort you, Master Degree scholars in the academia, to commit yourself in playing a pivotal role in enhancing public finance management. Visit our websites and download the gazetted Bills before Parliament and critique them,” Mudenda said.
“Intellectually offer your critical analysis of them in order to qualitatively improve the architecture of the laws. Attend parliamentary public hearings and make your inputs in the law-making processes.”
He said scholars should not blame the poor quality of laws on MPs, adding that they should take a leaf from Rwanda where all MPs hold a minimum of a first degree.
By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe is facing crunch time in its battle to curb rising COVID-19 infections and deaths as the third wave grips the country, medical experts said yesterday.
This comes after the World Health Organisation (WHO) on Friday warned that the situation will get worse in Africa as COVID-19 cases rise at a time when health institutions were failing to handle new admissions.
On Saturday, Zimbabwe recorded 10 COVID-19 deaths, which brought the number of people who succumbed to the virus last week to 40, with an average of five people dying daily.
Infections have been on the rise in the past week with 408 cases recorded on Friday and 293 on Saturday.
Zimbabwe has now recorded 1 666 deaths from 41 628 infections. Medical and Dental Private Practitioners of Zimbabwe Association president Johannes Marisa told NewsDay that the latest figures were enough warning for the country to improve its poor testing as the number of infections could actually be understated.
“We are in big trouble, not only in Zimbabwe, but in other southern African countries as well. The virus is affecting some countries, which were previously recording low cases in previous waves. We need to be very cautious. We may experience the worst fatalities of the pandemic since we were hard-hit in 2020, especially at a time when we do not have enough resources to deal with the Indian and South Af-rican variants.
“Due to extreme poverty, some are not even affording sanitisers and face masks. In Africa, we also do not have enough vaccines. There is poor health education on the pandemic, which is also another big challenge. There is also the issue of poor testing facilities and contact-tracing, which will worsen the situation,” Marisa said.
Community Working Group on Health executive director Itai Rusike said poor testing could result in a large number of cases be-ing unaccounted for.
“As the country witnesses a new spike in COVID-19 cases and deaths, with rapid testing, authorities can stay a step ahead by scaling up active case finding in challenging environments in urban and rural communities,” Rusike said.
“Testing is the first key line of de-fence against the virus as it allows for the isolation of cases to slow transmission and enhances provision of targeted care to those infected. Testing is also essential for the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines.
“The COVID-19 reality on the ground is worse than the official figures as a lot more people may be infected and moving around without knowing their status. This third wave is highly infectious and spreading devastatingly quickly.”
WHO director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Friday said COVID-19 infections in Africa had increased by over 52%, with deaths increasing by 32% in the past week.
He said African countries were likely to be overwhelmed by the surge in COVID-19 cases due to vaccine shortages.
“In Africa, cases have increased by 52% just in the past week and deaths have increased by 32%. And we expect things to only get worse. Vaccines donated next year will be far too late for those who are dying today or being infected today or at risk today,” he said.
Only 432 572 people had received their second vaccination jabs, while 701 348 had received their first jabs by June 19, 2021. The country has targetted to vaccinate 60% of its population, about 10 million people to achieve herd immunity.
Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights secretary Norman Matara said: “We are now in a wave where we are seeing rising cases, so it is everyone’s responsibility to make sure we contain the virus. On the part of citizens, we need to behave to avoid going out and avoid unnecessary gatherings. On the part of government, we need to intensify our testing so that we test as many people as possible to identify those with the disease and do the right thing.”
Progressive Teachers’ Union of Zimbabwe president Takavafira Zhou claimed that over 500 teachers were affected by the pandemic since the beginning of this year.
“We have more than 500 cases of COVID-19 infections among our teachers countrywide. Of these, there were 20 deaths this year alone that have been confirmed to us through our structures.”
He said when schools open during the pandemic, teachers must refuse to teach bloated classes, or even to mark books of pupils who have not been tested for the virus.
Government has indicated that schools will open on June 28 despite the surge in new infections.
By A Correspondent- A Plumtree woman was robbed of ZAR22 500 at gunpoint on Friday at her homestead in Ndolwane.
Sethi Ndlovu lost a large amount of money to robbers around 1am when the robbers pounced at her homestead and demanded money.
Sources close to investigations told Bulawayo24.com that the robbers were in possession of a pistol and hammers when they reportedly threatened to kill the complainant.
“At around 0100 hours, suspects entered the complainant’s homestead and opened her bedroom door. One of the accused lighted the complainant on the face with a torch. They were wearing face masks while holding hammers and a pistol”, said the source.
The source further alleged that the robbers took away ZAR2500 under the mattress and demanded more money while hitting Ndlovu with the hammer.
“The accused then demanded fuel from the complainant and she told them she does not have the fuel, then accused hit her once on her right foot and on the right arm with a hammer. They then searched the house and found ZAR20000 and USD$1100 and fled away using an unidentified car which the complainant heard idling outside”, the source added.
Ndlovu reported the matter to police before going to a local clinic where she was treated and discharged.
No arrests has since being made and efforts to get a comment from Inspector Loveness Mangena, Matabeleland South police spokesperson were futile.
Cases of armed robbery are on the rise especially in Matabeleland and recently police warned people to avoid keeping large sums of money at home.

By A Correspondent- A Chinhoyi man was grisly murdered and had his body left in a disused house.
John Fundo, 25, of Destiny was found dead in the wee hours of Wednesday morning.
Two suspects have since been arrested for murder while the other two are on the run.
Mashonaland West Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Magret Chitove told H-Metro that residents from Ruvimbo Phase 2, discovered the body of Fundo in an unfinished house.
Inspector Chitove said Fundo was found having difficulties in breathing and an informer made a report at ZRP Chemagamba.
ZRP Chemagamba and CID quickly reacted to the report and found Fundo dead.
Police made investigations and got information that Fundo was assaulted by four men.
The arrested suspects are MacDonald Mushove, 28, and Denford Matore, 27.
Fundo was found with a deep cut in his head and bruises all over his body.
Insp Chitove urged members of the public to preserve the sanctity of life.
“Whenever people have misunderstandings, they must resolve them amicably or invite the police so that the law follows its due course,” said Insp Chitove.
She underscored the need for the members of the general populace not to take the law into their own hands.
Insp Chitove said the suspects will appear in court soon.
“Fundo’s body was taken to Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital awaiting a post mortem.
“The police are still hunting for the two suspects who are still at large. Fundo’s next of kin has been advised,” said Insp Chitove.
Two South African soldiers aged 27 and 38 were on Friday evening arrested along with a 30-year-old foreigner when using an army vehicle to transport 12 crates of cigarettes worth R160 000 smuggled from Zimbabwe.
The army men and the foreigner, whose names are yet to be released by South Africa’s police services, are expected to appear at the Musina Magistrates Court soon.
Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the arrest yesterday.
The three were intercepted near Baobab Truck Stop along the N1 highway following a tip-off while on their way to meet a potential buyer.
“The police at Beitbridge received information about an army vehicle which was loaded with illicit cigarettes which were to be delivered to an unidentified buyer around Musina,” said Brig Mojapelo.
“They then reacted by staging a stop and search operation next to the Baobab Truck Park along the N1 road north of Musina. The army vehicle fitting the description given approached and the members pulled it over.”
Upon being stopped by police, the two uniformed soldiers and a civilian wearing an army jacket, disembarked from the vehicle.
Brig Mojapelo said the vehicle was then searched and 12 crates of Remmington Gold cigarettes valued at R160 000 were found packed in the back of the vehicle. The civilian was immediately arrested but the armed soldiers reportedly became confrontational and refused to be arrested.
“The police then confiscated the said vehicle. The soldiers were later brought to the police station by their commander and were then detained. They will be charged with possession of illicit cigarettes, defeating the ends of Justice and resisting arrest,” said Brig Mojapelo.
The undocumented foreigner will be charged with impersonating members of South Africa’s National Defence Forces and contravening a section of the Immigration Act.
Limpopo Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe commended her subordinates reacting swiftly to the tip-off and apprehending the suspects.
By A Correspondent- A bigamous policeman stationed in Victoria Falls allegedly stabbed his estranged wife 10 times, killing her on the spot.
Constable Bright Ndlovu (28) of ZRP Victoria Falls last Thursday followed Ms Muchaneta Siziba (21) to Kamativi where he ruthlessly stabbed her for allegedly refusing to reconcile with him.
Ms Siziba had fled to Kamativi to stay with her aunt after Ndlovu allegedly brought another woman to the matrimonial home last year.
Police sources said the body had multiple stab wounds and the intestines were protruding.
The couple stayed together in Victoria Falls before Ms Siziba left her matrimonial home after Ndlovu had married another woman.
She went to stay with her aunt in Tinde area of Kamativi. Ndlovu followed her last week Friday intending to beg her to return home and when she refused, he allegedly stabbed her several times in the presence of her aunt Ms Easter Dumbura Shoko.
Ndlovu fled from the scene and was arrested on Saturday afternoon at Pashu shops where he had stopped to buy food when an alert policeman spotted him. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi urged members of the public not to resort to violence to solve disputes.
“We are investigating a case where a member of the organisation stabbed his estranged wife and ran away. Couples should resolve differences in a peaceful manner and should seek guidance from elders, church or community leaders if faced with domestic disputes,” said Assistant Commissioner Nyathi.
Ndlovu is assisting police with investigations and is expected to appear in court today charged with murder.
According to police, Ndlovu and Ms Siziba had a misunderstanding sometime last year while they were staying together at Victoria Falls Police Camp which led to their separation. On Thursday last week Ms Siziba proceeded to her rural home in Tinde and Ndlovu followed her on Friday where he intended to meet and talk about reunion.
He reportedly spoke to Ms Shoko and also apologised to Ms Siziba and asked her to return to their matrimonial home but she refused, police said.
Ndlovu showed Ms Siziba’s aunt a list of things he claimed he had paid to the deceased’s father in Nembudziya, Gokwe as lobola after selling his car.
At around 8pm while in Ms Shoko’s bedroom hut, Ndlovu allegedly asked for Ms Siziba’s phone and she refused to give him.
A misunderstanding ensued and Ndlovu stabbed her all over the body.
Ms Siziba screamed for help and her aunt rushed outside where she picked a log and struck Ndlovu.
The accused allegedly fled leaving a bag containing his police uniform. Ms Siziba staggered out of the bedroom hut but collapsed and died in the yard.
She had deep cuts all over the body and intestines were protruding. A report was made to the police leading to Ndlovu’s arrest on Saturday.
Ms Siziba’s body was taken to Bulawayo for post-mortem.
By A Corresondent- Three teachers at Karoi schools succumbed to COVID-19 on Thursday last week as Zimbabwe is experiencing a coronavirus resurgence.
Karoi is among several districts in Mashonaland West province that have been declared COVID-19 hotspots by the Health ministry and is under localised lockdown.
One of the deceased teachers, Goodluck Tobaiwa Chambe, of Chikangwe High School was a principal marking supervisor under the Combined Science section.
Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) secretary-general Raymond Majongwe said it was sad that Chambe died without getting his dues for marking last year’s ZIMSEC examinations. Said Majongwe:
_We are not happy that the late Karoi teacher (Chambe) was yet to get paid by Zimsec. He never got his dues and this is how bad it is as people who offered services, but national institutions renege on making payments. The impact of COVID-19 is obviously felt as he could have used the funds to buy protective equipment and to get medical attention. This is a tragedy._
Zimsec public relations manager Nicky Dlamini consoled the Chambe family confirming examination markers were yet to receive their allowances.
Dlamini said:
_We are sorry for the family’s loss. Let me confirm that the payments for teachers, who marked Zimsec examinations, are currently being processed. Those that marked language papers were paid in May, the next batch of payments is being dispatched._
_COVID-19 affected many systems, not only Zimsec, but globally. It is unfortunate, but the payments were made in batches._
Majongwe said more teachers were likely to succumb to the pandemic and appealed to the government to immediately put in place measures to protect them.
He added that PTUZ views the premature reopening of schools as criminal as that has resulted in the loss of lives.

By A Correspondent- A self confessed witch in Chimanimani was last Friday caught red handed at a fellow villager’s homestead hardly a fortnight after she was trapped while trying to snatch a newly-born baby.
Enesis Kaisa allegedly ‘crashed’ at her unidentified target’s homestead before she could get into the hut where the intended victim was sleeping in.
Unlike in the recent incident in which she was caught stark nak_ed, this time she had her clothes on.
Chief Saurombe confirmed the incident which happened in Chiutani Village.
He said Kaisa now faces banishment from the village if she is found guilty when the case is brought before his court this weekend.
“This is unacceptable. Just as we were finalising the first case in which she was caught trying to kill someone’s baby, she is at it again. She will appear before my court this weekend and Chief Muusha is also expected to be present. We will co-preside over the matter.
“She ran out of luck because most villagers here are now protecting their homesteads through miteyo (witch traps). I think she was not aware of this development. If she is found guilty, we will banish her from this village but she will have to pay for her sins first. We do not condone such behaviour,” said Chief Saurombe.
The court heard that Kaisa was found lying at her target’s homestead in the wee hours of the morning. She however confessed ignorance on how she had arrived there.
Concerned villagers took the matter to Chief Saurombe’s court.
In the recent case in which she was caught at Esnath Muyambo’s homestead while trying to snatch a newly-born baby, Kaisa was ordered to pay a fine of two beasts after she was found guilty.
Kaisa confessed that she had been on a mission to kill the baby, further revealing that she had been sent by another villager.
“Muyambo’s grandchild was the target in that case, but she is safe,” said Chief Saurombe.
By A Correspondent- In a macabre real life drama that has left Chiutani villagers in Chimanimani and surrounding areas weak-kneed, an elderly woman has revealed that she has been forcing her granddaughter to breastfeed a snake.
The matter came to light last week on Saturday at Chief Saurombe’s court when Gogo Dalice Dzamura was summoned to answer to the witchcraft allegations that were being levelled against her by her granddaughter, Portia Dzemura.
Portia is in her early 20s.
Gogo Dzemura admitted to practising witchcraft and forcing her grandchild, Portia, to breastfeed a snake.
She, however, did not reveal why she was forcing Portia to breastfeed the reptile.
Chief Saurombe found her guilty and ordered her to pay a fine of three goats on Sunday.
Three traditional healers and exorcists will conduct cleansing ceremonies for both Gogo Dzemura and Portia.
During the court session, Portia was in tears as she narrated her ordeal.
Her mother spoke of how her daughter is now an outcast in the community due to the case.
“It is a strange and sad development. We have heard of witchcraft cases before, but this one is extraordinary. We hope that this matter will be put to rest so that my daughter can be freed from this bondage.
“She is a young woman who looks forward to getting married and having a family of her own. Most men are now shunning her because of this. Those who were close to her are now distancing themselves from her,” said Portia’s mother.
In an interview, Chief Saurombe said the case is strange, scary and unheard of.
“Portia approached our courts revealing that she was being forced to breastfeed a snake which appears and disappears. She revealed that milk oozes out of her breasts when the snake is about to breastfeed. This is the first time I have heard of such a case in my area.
“Gogo Dzemura has confessed to practising witchcraft and causing misfortunes in the village. She says she was forcing Portia to breastfeed the snake.
“Portia is a troubled woman as the society now views her as an outcast,” said Chief Saurombe.
By A Correspondent- A 16 year old woman has given birth to triplets in what the community has embraced as a blessing from God.
However, the couple is struggling to take care of the babies since the husband, 18-year-old Leonard Maenza, is not formally employed.
The Herald reports that the teen mum had no idea that hers was a multiple pregnancy, neither did she have a scan or pre-natal care and check-ups.
Ruvarashe fell pregnant last year after dropping out of school in her Form 3 grade due to challenges with school fees.
She dropped out during the Covid-19 lockdown.
She said she met Leonard and eloped in August. After she fell pregnant, Her husband was assisted by his relatives to pay lobola.
Ruvarashe said they did not have marital problems and were happy in the home.
Leonard survives on piece jobs and the challenge, according to the wife, is taking care of the babies.
Ruvarashe’s aunt Miss Anna Chisoni, who is staying with the teen mother, said the biggest challenge was on milk, soap and clothes for the babies.
The father, who has no cell phone, was said to be wandering around looking for piece jobs to buy milk for the babies and food for the wife.
His mother Beauty Maenza said Leonard is her only son and she is happy to have three grandsons, Takunda, Tinotenda and Tawanda.
Ward 6, Councillor Oliver Mukombwe said he will facilitate the employment of Leonard at Bindura Municipality when vacancies arise.
Women Coalition of Zimbabwe (WCoZ) provincial chairperson Ms Mandi Piyasi who mobilised milk, clothes and soap for the babies, said the rate at which teen pregnancies have risen in Mashonaland Central province was alarming.
“Teen pregnancies are a deterrence to achieving gender equality. It is high time families embrace sex education to ensure our girls are well-informed of the ills of engaging in sex and unprotected sex early,” she said.
By A Correspondent- The ministry of Health and Child Care which is headed by Vice President, Constantino Chiwenga has been exposed after it has been discovered that two provincial hospitals are keeping expired drugs.
According to the state media, a report by the Auditor-General’s Office has revealed that some of the drugs have expiry dates of as far back as 1995.
The expired drugs — which were being held in reserve at Masvingo Provincial Hospital — had expired between 1995 and 2019, while Marondera Provincial Hospital did not take heed of a directive to dispose of expired drugs worth $ 7 140 in 2019.
In addition to putting the lives of patients at risk, the hospitals allowed the drugs to expire at a time patients were in need of them.
According to Auditor-General Mrs Mildred Chiri’s report for the financial year ended December 31, 2019 on Appropriation Accounts and Fund Accounts, which was recently tabled in Parliament, the two hospitals breached Section 90 of the Public Procurement and Disposal of Public Assets Act.
The Act requires disposal of all obsolete, surplus and unserviceable assets.
Expired medicines are supposed to be destroyed “twice a year in normal circumstances”, with the quantities expected to be minimal.
“The report notes that keeping the expired drugs in storage opened loopholes for theft and corruption.
“Failure to dispose of the dangerous drugs and expired drugs may result in pilferage which pose danger to the public.
“Also storing expired drugs deprives the pharmacy of the much-needed storage space,” adds the report.
Mrs Chiri said she was not provided with application letters for disposal of the expired drugs.
“It was also not clear whether the hospital had applied for such authority after the board of survey was conducted.
“Marondera Provincial Hospital was granted authority to dispose of expired drugs worth $7 140 on July 26, 2019.
“However, as at the time of my audit, the expired drugs were still at the hospital.”
The report recommended that the Ministry of Health and Child Care should engage the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe for the board of survey to be conducted.
“Management should make efforts to have the expired drugs destroyed as soon as the authority has been granted.
BY A CORRESPONDENT| The Harare Magistrates Court has summoned Augur Investments Managing Director Michael John Van Blerk’s medical doctor to appear in court to clarify on his sickness which has stalled his trial on charges of malicious damage to property.
Van Blerk is jointly charged together with City of Harare officials Hosiah Chisango and Engineer Isaiah Chawatama as well as Samuel Kadye and Mandla Marlone Ndebele from Augur Investments.
Last week, Van Blerk’s lawyers said he was unable to navigate the stairs at the Harare Magistrates Court due to illness.
They also brought a letter from a medical doctor from Parirenyatwa general hospital dated 4 June 2021 which indicated that Van Blerk was not fit to stand trial.
“This letter serves to notify you that Mr Van Blerk Michael John is currently being followed up for depression. He is currently not fit to stand trial and will not be able to follow through court proceedings. He needs to stabilize first on medication,” said a Dr Muzvidziwa.
It is the State case that Van Blerk and his co-accused connived to destroy a shoe house built by Harare businessman George Katsimberis claiming that he did not have approved plans.
Katsimberis denies the claims and has insisted that he followed all the procedures.
During the hearing on an application for exception by Katsimberis last week, state prosecutor Michael Reza confirmed that stamps and signatures on architectural designs were authentic.
Last week, Van Blerk’s legal counsel successfully convinced the court to separate him from his co-accused citing inability to appear in court.
Now the court wants to hear from his doctors who will be expected to answer on when he is likely to be fit for trial among other questions.

By A Correspondent-Rodwell Khomazana a nine-year-old Zimbabwean boy who was mauled by a hyena last month will this week undergo 20-hour long plastic surgery by a group of South African Plastic surgeons who have offered to reconstruct his face for free.
The innocent boy lost his nose, left eye, most of his upper lip, bits of his forehead and other parts of his face when he was attacked during a night-time church service outside Harare on May 2.
Doctors in one of the city’s main public hospitals did the best they could to patch him up and stabilise his condition but lacked the resources to fully repair his ravaged face.
Unable to afford specialised surgery only available abroad, his mother contacted medics in neighbouring South Africa, who agreed to operate on him for free in a private Johannesburg clinic.
“When she mentioned the story of this poor child mauled by a hyena I couldn’t say no,” plastic surgeon Ridwan Mia told AFP earlier this week.
Rodwell was flown to Johannesburg on Saturday and greeted by hospital staff singing South Africa’s national anthem.
Many wore white T-shirts printed with “Team Rodwell” and a drawing of the boy.

They clapped and cheered as he was wheeled into the building, a green hooded sweater pulled over his head and his face covered in white bandages.
A peephole had been cut over his right eye, through which he watched cartoons on a smart tablet.
“HUGE INJURY”
Mia and his team will perform exploratory surgery on Monday, after which they will schedule a complex operation expected to last around 20 hours.
They will use tissue from other parts of his body to reconstruct his jaw, nose, mouth and cheeks. He will also be fitted with a prostatic eye.
“Unfortunately he will have multiple scars on his face,” said Mia.
“What we are hoping to do is a procedure where we minimise … the scarring,” he explained.
Rodwell “will never have a completely normal, unscarred face”, he warned. “But we want to give him something that will at least allow him to be functional and enjoy the things that other kids do.”
‘When she mentioned the story of this poor child mauled by a hyena I couldn’t say no,’ plastic surgeon Ridwan Mia told AFP AFP/GUILLEM SARTORIO
Donations will cover the costs of hospitalisation, which is expected to last at least a month with several touch up procedures.
A hotel has offered to accommodate the child’s mother during that time.
Mia said leftover money would be used for therapy to help Rodwell overcome trauma.
He noted psychological support would be particularly important for him to accept his new eye.
Doctors hope Rodwell will eventually “feel like a normal boy again”, Mia said.

Kazembe has since launched a smear campaign against Makamba since the businessman announced his interest in the position.
Makamba told Newsday he was ready to submit his curriculum vitae so that he intensifies the fight.
“I am just hearing that I was barred from contesting, but surprisingly, I have not yet submitted my CV and I have no problem with the executive,” he said curtly.

Unvaccinated people are dominating the present run of Covid-19 positive cases, with most infected people showing symptoms and most clusters of infection being initiated by someone who became infected outside Zimbabwe, says Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care Dr John Mangwiro.
While the vaccines were helping, he said, vaccinated people needed to keep wearing face masks, sanitising and observing social distancing.
With the Ministry of Health and Child Care pushing vaccination, progress can be maintained since Zimbabwe was set to take delivery of another large batch of vaccines this week as the Government steps up efforts to speed up the vaccination programme.
Said Dr Mangwiro: “The positive cases we are getting are mostly those who are not vaccinated, and we are finding out that most of them are asymptomatic. The hotspots are mainly Mashonaland West, Bulawayo, Manicaland.
“Mass vaccination in border towns had been critical with low cases in those areas. Fortunately, our border towns like Victoria Falls where we had our first mass vaccination and the uptake was good. I was talking to Dr Mamvura, the District Medical Officer for Victoria Falls, and his cases are quite low, about six. Also Plumtree did a massive campaign to vaccinate, and so figures are very low.”
Statistics from border towns, Dr Mangwiro said, showed that most of the new cases were imported, meaning they came from other countries and not from within.
“You can see that vaccination is an advantage and we encourage people to get vaccinated.”
Zimbabwe has been vaccinating its citizens using the highly rated Chinese-made Sinopharm and Sinovac vaccines, which have both been granted emergency use authorisation by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and a combined 1,7 million doses of the two vaccines has formed the mainstay of the Zimbabwean vaccination effort.
In addition, India has donated 37 000 doses of Covaxin while 25 000 doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine were procured by a mining company.
Research conducted by the Gamaleya National Research Centre of Epidemiology and Microbiology and the Russian Direct Investment Fund revealed that the Sputnik V Covid-19 vaccine showed a 97,6 percent efficacy.
Added Dr Mangwiro: “More vaccines are expected in the country this coming week and we encourage people to get vaccinated and keep up the pressure and momentum on vaccination.”
He encouraged those that have already been vaccinated to continue adhering to the prescribed protocols such as wearing face masks, staying indoors unless it becomes extremely necessary to go out, washing hands, sanitisation and maintaining social distance, to minimise chances of them getting infected.
Zimbabwe introduced a new range of restrictions recently and the Government encouraged people to adhere to contain the spread of coronavirus.
“Let us continue to take care, to social distance and listen to what has been directed by President Mnangagwa, if there is a lockdown let us listen, if there are restrictions let us listen. We get very worried if there is business as usual in some areas,” said Dr Mangwiro. -Herald
State Media – Most Zimbabweans would vote for Zanu PF in any elections from now with measures taken by the Government to curb the spread of Covid-19 also resonating with the population, a survey by Afrobarometer reveals.
This comes at a time when the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has projected 6 percent economic growth this year, buoyed by the bumper harvest, increased energy production and resumption of greater manufacturing and construction activities.
It also comes at a time when the Second Republic led by President Mnangagwa is carrying out extensive infrastructural development that seeks to ensure that no part of Zimbabwe is left behind in terms of development.
Against this backdrop, many people have been moving towards Zanu PF enticed by its people-centred policies and the Government’s thrust of economic development.
And for the first time in decades, the Second Republic, under President Mnangagwa, has realised Budget surpluses and contained inflation, which had become a major source of macro-economic instability, while the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)foreign currency auction system has enhanced transparency and accountability by allowing market forces to determine the distribution and use of foreign currency.
By and large, prices of basic commodities have stabilised. According to Afrobarometer, a Pan-African survey and research network, Zimbabweans who were interviewed threw their support behind the Zanu PF-led Government.
“More than half (54 percent) of Zimbabweans say they feel close to a political party. About a quarter (27 percent) of citizens say they feel close to Zanu PF, while a fifth (20 percent) say they feel close to MDC. If presidential elections were held tomorrow, one-third (33 percent) of respondents say they would vote for the Zanu PF candidate, compared to one-fourth (26 percent) who say they would vote for the MDC candidate. About four in 10 refused to answer, say they would not vote, or say they don’t know,” read the survey in part.
On Government’s response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the survey said Zimbabweans broadly commended Government for its response to contain the deadly plague.
“81 percent say it managed the response “fairly well” or “very well,” and 84 percent say it kept the public informed. Four out of five respondents (81 percent) endorse lockdowns and school closures to curb the spread of Covid-19, although most say lockdowns were difficult to comply with and schools should have reopened much sooner.
While some political parties have been whining on social media platforms over the postponement of by-elections, the scientific survey established that “51 percent of citizens say it is justified for the government to temporarily limit democratic freedoms by postponing elections or limiting political campaigning during a health emergency.”
According to the report, 72 percent of Zimbabweans agreed to the use of armed forces and police to enforce public health measures.
According to its website, Afrobarometer, which started in 12 African countries in 1999 and has now spread to 34 countries, uses its surveys to give the public a voice in policymaking by providing high-quality public opinion data to policymakers, policy advocates, civil society organizations, academics, news media, donors and investors, and ordinary Africans.
In Zimbabwe, Afrobarometer partnered the Mass Public Opinion Institute for its Round 8 survey on the country’s direction and economic situation, Government performance, Covid-19, popular trust and political party affiliation, and voting intentions. – Herald
A bigamous policeman stationed in Victoria Falls allegedly stabbed his estranged wife 10 times, killing her on the spot.
-Chronicle

A 16-year-old has given birth to triplets in what the community has embraced as a blessing from God, but the couple is struggling to take care of the babies since the husband, 18-year-old Leonard Maenza, is not formally employed.
When The Herald visited the young family, Ruvarashe balanced two babies on her lap, one on each arm as she breastfed them while her aunt held the other child. Considering her age, having triplets is not an easy task the teenager has to cope with.
She had no idea that hers was a multiple pregnancy, neither did she have a scan or pre-natal care and check-ups.
She said it was a shock discovering that she was having not one or two, but three babies while lying on the delivery bed. The teen mother gave birth naturally to triplets at Bindura Hospital on May 3 and together with her husband, Leonard, they are overjoyed.
But the two have no financial means to look after the family adequately and they are relying on well-wishers. Ruvarashe fell pregnant last year after dropping out of Form 3 due to challenges with school fees.
She dropped out during the Covid-19 lockdown. “Following the separation of my parents I started staying with my grandmother in the Maganyani area in Bindura rural. I commuted to Bindura every day for secondary education and due to resource constraints I dropped out of school while in Form 3 last year,” she said.
“I met Leonard and I eloped in August. I fell pregnant and he was assisted by his relatives to pay lobola. His father passed away and his mother welcomed me.
“I had no idea that I was carrying triples and the babies came one after the other, it was a surprise. I thought I was carrying one baby, I could not believe it when the nurse said another baby was coming and then there was another one.”
Ruvarashe said they did not have marital problems and were happy in the home. Leonard survives on piece jobs and the challenge, according to the wife, is taking care of the babies.
“I am not producing enough milk for the babies,” she said. Ruvarashe’s aunt Miss Anna Chisoni, who is staying with the teen mother, said the biggest challenge was on milk, soap and clothes for the babies.
“The father is not employed and cannot take care of these babies. He is trying to fend for his family, but the situation is too big for him,” she said.
“I am currently staying with the babies and the mother because this place is close to the hospital. The babies are frequently going for check-ups and they are on kangaroo mother care due to low weight.
“I know that these children are still young but we accepted the situation and we thank God for the blessing of the babies. When she eloped I tried to take her back, but they insisted that they love each other and wanted to stay together.
“They don’t have problems in their marriage and our in-laws are supportive. I hope that the father is assisted in getting a job.”
The father, who has no cell phone, was said to be wandering around looking for piece jobs to buy milk for the babies and food for the wife.
However, his mother Ms Beauty Maenza said Leonard is her only son and she is happy to have three grandsons, Takunda, Tinotenda and Tawanda.
“I am happy but the challenge is lack of adequate food for the babies. My son is not employed but with his wife they don’t have marital problems. I am staying with them at a farm compound at Saimona Village 3B,” she said.
Ward 6, Councillor Oliver Mukombwe said he will facilitate the employment of Leonard at Bindura Municipality when vacancies arise.
“Currently a number of employees had their contracts terminated but I am sure the council will recruit any time soon. This is not easy, other families are struggling with one baby. We are happy for the young couple, it’s a blessing to have triplets. I urge the community to assist in any way they can. Let’s support this young family,” he said.
– Herald
THE Zimbabwe National Road Administration (ZINARA) is losing thousands of dollars in potential revenue daily through illegal tollgates and by-pass roads at the three toll plazas in the province, The Manica Post can reveal.
Investigations conducted by this publication revealed that individuals like Mr Padhina Dzumbira, who has had several brushes with the law for operating illegal tollgates, are now living large from the proceeds of the illegal activities.
Mr Dzumbira has been operating an illegal tollgate at the 22 Mile Toll Plaza along the Mutare-Chimanimani Road for years now and has a pending extortion case before the courts.
Some of the culprits have built and electrified their houses from the illegal activity. Law enforcement agents are reported to be part of the scam as some of them man these unsanctioned tollgates at night, collecting various amounts from motorists by-passing the tollgates.
Both the police and road authorities confirmed the presence of illegal tollgates and by-pass roads and said some of the operators were unrepentant despite being brought to book on several occasions.
At 22 Miles, the by-pass road is a stone’s throw from the tollgate manned 24 hours by heavily armed police offices, while at the Magamba and Rusape tollgates, by-pass roads have been developed and are now popular with pirate vehicles, popularly known as mushikashika.
The by-pass roads pass through nearby farms. Some motorists, especially haulage truck drivers, opt to circumvent the Magamba Toll Plaza by using the Grange Road that passes through Old Mutare Mission before getting back onto the Mutare-Harare Highway near Odzi River.
A visit to the 22 Miles Toll Plaza last Saturday revealed that the by-pass road was well maintained. Operators of the illegal tollgate have even erected a boom gate and a vending stall where they sell various wares to the commuting public as they await their turn to be served. So busy is the illegal tollgate that hardly five minutes pass by without a vehicle passing through.
While Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube announced in his 2021 National Budget Statement that light motor vehicles were supposed to pay toll fees of US$2, minibuses (US$3), buses (US$4), heavy trucks (US$5) and haulage trucks (US$10) or the equivalent at the prevailing interbank rate, motorists pay whatever they want at the 22 Miles Toll Plaza, even as little as $10.
Last year, the Parliamentary Committee on Transport and Infrastructure Development came face-to-face with the rot at the 22 Miles Toll Plaza and received an ear-bashing from Mr Dzumbira who told them that no one could stop him from collecting the money as the illegal tollgate was in his field.- Manica Post

“We look at data on the ground and we make decisions based on that data. This taskforce meets every Monday and Cabinet sits every Tuesday. You will definitely hear from that process,” she said.
An upsurge in Covid-19 cases has forced the Government to introduce stricter lockdown regulations, while some districts that have recorded increased transmissions have been placed under localised hard lockdowns.
Kwekwe, Karoi and Makonde, among other districts, have recently been placed under localised lockdowns following a spike in cases.
There are concerns reopening schools could lead to an increase in transmissions.
Teacher unions have called on the Government to roll out mass testing at schools ahead of reopening.- The Sunday Mail

Q: How have the vaccines been developed so quickly? Does this mean that their safety and efficacy has been compromised?
A: The speed of development of COVID-19 vaccines has been unprecedented for several reasons, but the safety and efficacy requirements for vaccines have not been compromised, Vaccine development was facilitated by:
The massive financial investment by governments, industry and philanthropic organisations in vaccine development and the re-direction of much of the global research and commercial infrastructure for the development and manufacture of vaccines. Governments also enabled companies to take the commercial risk of manufacturing some vaccine stocks ahead of regulatory approvals.
New technologies adapted from the development of other vaccines – mRNA vaccines were developed for COVID-19 very rapidly after the sequence of the COVID-19 virus was determined, but the underlying technology had been under development since much longer and production could be scaled up very quickly. The adenovirus technology used for adenovirus vector vaccines was first tested with SARS, MERS and Ebola virus over the last 20 years, and so was able to be adapted quickly to COVID-19, which has several similarities to these viruses.
Clinical trial successes – it has been possible to rapidly recruit large numbers of volunteers into clinical trials and, with unfortunately high rates of infection in several countries, to complete trials with 10,000-50,000 people in a short period of time. Under normal circumstances, it may take many months or even a few years to carry out trials of this size to determine whether a vaccine is effective. Very close collaboration – between regulators, industry and clinical researchers enabled clear indications of regulatory requirements and early access to results.
Intensive and insightful research – researchers predicted that the “spike protein” on the virus would be a good target for vaccine development, and almost all vaccines have been designed to induce a response to this protein. So far, the spike protein has produced a strong immune response in those vaccinated, and for those vaccines that have reported clinical results are highly protective from COVID-19 disease. Q: Will mRNA vaccines affect the DNA of vaccine recipients?
A: No. The mRNA in the vaccine has not been shown to incorporate itself into the genes of vaccine recipients and breaks down in the weeks after vaccination. mRNA vaccines contain genetic instructions for our cells, which only read them and provide copies of the SARS-CoV2 spike protein. This enables the body’s natural immune systems to cause a response in vaccine recipients if they are later exposed to the virus.
Q: How long will COVID-19 vaccination provide protection for immunised people?
A: We do not yet know how long protection from any of these vaccines lasts. We will get better insights over the next 12 months.
The duration of protection provided by vaccines can vary. For example, the seasonal influenza vaccine is given annually, because the influenza virus mutates, and protection wanes over a number of months. Other vaccines, such as those for rubella or measles provide multi-year or even life-long protection from disease. Mutations in key viral proteins can mean that virus variants emerge. The SARS-CoV-2-coronavirus is prone to mutations that creates variants, some of which have become established in a number of regions of the world. The scientific community and regulators are very actively monitoring whether the current vaccines can continue protecting people from infection with new variants. A number of vaccine developers are currently developing vaccines against the range of variants, and it is likely that booster shots with these vaccines will increase protection against known variants. Regulators have agreed that review of data on vaccines against variants will be facilitated based on assessment of immune response to the variant, in the same way that new seasonal influenza vaccines are evaluated each year. Q: Why are there so many vaccine candidates?
A: As the global seriousness of the pandemic became rapidly apparent, development of effective vaccines for COVID-19 became the top priority of many pharmaceutical companies and medical research institutes. There was also unprecedented government and private sector investment in vaccine development. There is now a wide range of technologies for developing new vaccines – and many of the organisations developing COVID-19 vaccines have particular experience in one or more of these technologies. This has ensured that there would still be vaccines available if some were not approved for reasons of efficacy, safety or manufacturing challenges.
Q: What if many people start getting a reaction from a particular COVID-19 vaccine?
A: Short-term reactions, such as soreness at the injection site, fatigue or headache are common following any vaccination with COVID-19 vaccines. These reactions usually pass in a day or two. If new evidence becomes available that suggests that a specific serious adverse event may be linked to a particular COVID-19 vaccine then regulators will take action, working collaboratively on a global basis and liaise with public health authorities. The type of actions that can be taken depend on the nature of the adverse event, and could range from issuing safety warnings for patients, healthcare professionals and the community; updating the product information or consumer information for the vaccine to show contraindications for the use in particular patients (e.g. those with certain co-morbidities); to closely monitoring adverse events in certain groups of patients; preventing the release of a particular batch of vaccine through to temporary suspension of the use of the vaccine until more is known.
Q: How are regulators speeding up the time it takes to authorise a COVID-19 vaccine?
A: Many regulators globally have implemented faster access pathways for COVID-19 vaccines, without compromising on strict standards of safety, quality and efficacy.
Some countries have Emergency Use Authorisation pathways which assess the available data at the time of authorisation. Exercising these provisions is a matter for those countries, taking into account the benefits versus risks in the context of the prevailing domestic pandemic situation. Different countries may coin this pathway or authorisation routes differently but essentially, they follow the same principles. Other countries have implemented accelerated/priority, conditional or provisional approval schemes.
Under normal circumstances, regulatory assessment begins once all information to support registration is available. For COVID-19 vaccines, many regulators have agreed to accept data on a rolling basis to enable early evaluation of data as it becomes available. Regulators will only be in a position to make a provisional approval decision for a vaccine once there is sufficient data to support adequately the safety, quality and effectiveness of the vaccine for its intended use. If a decision is made to grant provisional or conditional approval, it will be based on the requirement for the sponsor to submit more comprehensive, longer term clinical data, stability data and other information with agreed timelines. Q: Did our country approve this COVID-19 vaccine, or are we relying on another country’s approval?
A: Most countries are carrying out independent regulatory evaluations on the submitted data for each vaccine. However, to ensure a more efficient use of resources and expertise, regulators in different countries are communicating closely on safety, efficacy and quality data and discussing technical issues as they may arise. In many cases principles of WHO Good Reliance Practices and collaborative mechanisms leverage the output of other regulators.
Q: Why weren’t very rare blood clots with low platelets with the AstraZeneca or Janssen vaccines picked up during clinical trials?
A: Thromboembolic events with concurrent thrombocytopenia are very rare – with estimates based on the number of spontaneous reports suggesting an overall incidence on the order of 10-15 cases per million doses. The clinical trials of these vaccines included large numbers of people, often with 10,000 to 20,000 individuals in the active vaccine arms, but even in trials of this size it was statistically unlikely that such very rare events would be detected. This shows the importance of continual safety monitoring during the use of these vaccines, to allow very rare events to be detected and investigated further.

By A Correspondent- Leader of the break away faction of the MDC Douglas Mwonzora is afraid of elections, the MDC Alliance has said.
In a tweet following revelations of Mwonzora’s demands after his secret visit to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’at the State House, the party described Mwonzora as an illegitimate leader scared of elections.
Said the MDC Alliance:
“Mwonzora is afraid of an election. He wants to prolong his illegitimate union with Zanu PF for as long as possible.
By A Correspondent- A 45 year old man in Zaka, Chief Nhema assaulted his 23-year-old stepson to death on allegations that he was disrespectful.
“On 9 June 2021 Tinashe Muube (45) around 11.30PM arrived at his home from Chiromo Business Centre where he was beer binging and went straight to the kitchen were his mother Enia Mabhiza (78), Abiort Chikwanda (23) and a 15-year-old boy were sitting shouting on top of his voice.
He started beating Chikwanda all over the body. Mabhiza and the juvenile tried to stop Muube from beating Chikwanda but were chased out of the hut.
“Muube continued beating Chikwanda until his wife Jenifer Wavarirai (45) heard the screaming of Chikwanda and came running trying to refrain his husband from beating the child but to no avail. She went and reported the incident to their uncle Tafadzwa Muube (55) who in turn alerted the neighbours,” he said.
When Muube saw the villagers he ran away and the villagers found Chikwanda already dead. The matter was reported on June 10 and the police found out that the body had deep cuts on the left side of the head, bruises and fractured right leg. The body was taken to Musiso Hospital mortuary.
