Suspected Ritual Murder For Missing Tractor Driver?

By A Correspondent- A 57 year old tractor driver was found dead with his eyes missing and with a deep cut on his head several days after he disappeared, raising fears that he could have been a ritual murder victim.

Grey Chirimo, who was employed by Allied Timbers, was found dead in Nyangani Dam, five days after he had disappeared with the tractor he was driving when he was last seen.

According to Manica Post, the tractor was found by members of the police sub-aqua unit two days before his body was discovered in Nyangani Dam. Allied Timbers had to hire a crane to retrieve the tractor from the dam.

Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Luxson Chananda confirmed the development saying investigations were in progress.

It is alleged that Chirimo knocked off duty at an Allied Timbers Estate in Mutasa on April 14 and went to the workshop to park the tractor. Insp Chananda said:

The following day, Justin William Matanga saw a trailer that was stuck on a tree. There were tractor tyre marks leading to Nyangani Dam.

A spirited search by the sub-aqua unit failed to recover Chirimo’s body. It was later found floating in Nyangani Dam on April 21.

There was a deep cut on his head, with his eyes missing.

ED Loses State House Decorum. What Next?

By A Correspondent | The pages of history turned at the weekend when ZANU PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa lost all state house decorum as a result of the ongoing recalling of MPs from his opponent Nelson Chamisa’s party.

Mnangagwa used the military, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to alter the 2018 election results which purpose-deployment was announced on the state television, ZBC, in events that led to his party getting two thirds of Parliament, but has since gone further to publicly humiliate himself by stripping down the remaining MDC Alliance legislators through recalls engineered by a court-created small party which has also received military backing from its inception.

Mnangagwa became the first politician to preside over a parliament that’s denounced by the country’s largest and most respected body of workers, the Zimbabwe Congress Of Trade Unions.

The development means Mnangagwa is now ranked worse than former Prime Minister, Ian Smith.

Announcing the development in a short speech, the ZCTU President Peter Mutasa said:

We cannot rely on the Parliament which has lost credibility after the politically motivated recalls of elected Members of Parliament and the evident whipping system.” He also went on to speak concerning corruption.

He said:

“Workers can not rely on the Tripartite Negotiating Forum which is dysfunctional due to lack of political will by a government that is keen to benefit businesses at the expense of the workers.

“The government is prepared to use the police and military force to enforce its open for business ideology. In any case the government officials and their cronies in cartels and monopolies are the business owners benefits.”

“Online Regulation Must Create Safe Spaces”: MISA

By A Correspondent- Government has been urged to implement the Windhoek Declaration (1991) on promoting an independent and pluralistic media, as well as the 2013 Constitution which provides guidelines and guarantees to freedom of the Press.

This was said by Media Institute of Southern Africa (Misa) Zimbabwe chairperson Golden Maunganidze in his statement preceding the World Press Freedom Day which will be commemorated today under the universal theme Information as a Public Good.

Maunganidze said Misa would commemorate the event under the theme Information as a Public Good: In Pursuit of Section 62 on Access to Information of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

“This comes in the wake of Zimbabwe’s 2013 Constitution, which now explicitly provides for the rights to access to information, freedom of expression and media freedom, among other progressive provisions under its Bill of Rights.”

He said while it was commendable that progressive laws like the Freedom of Information Act of 2020 were enacted in place of the widely discredited Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (Aippa), as well as the commendable licensing of community radio stations, there were, however, some claw-back provisions in media laws passed by Parliament.

“One such law is the Cyber-security and Data Protection Bill. The Bill is strong on surveillance of citizens and weak on balancing cyber-security with the enjoyment of fundamental rights such as free expression online, privacy and protection of personal data.

“Any form of regulation of the internet should be aimed at creating safe online spaces for the exercise and enjoyment of rights as opposed to criminalisation of online communication under the guise of dealing with internet abuse,” he said.

Misa said the Zimbabwe Media Commission Act also has worrying provisions that do not advance the critical role played by a free and unfettered media as envisaged by the Windhoek Declaration.

“Co-regulation of the media should not be an end in itself, but should be the catalyst to fostering a free, diverse and pluralistic media as envisaged by the Windhoek Declaration,” Maunganidze said.

Govt Prioritises High School Learners On IDs

By A Correspondent- The government is giving preference to high school learners in the issuance of polythene-synthetic Identity Cards (IDs) while limiting to the general public.

The move has been necessitated by a shortage of consumables and unpaid licences and dongles that require foreign currency.

Pupils are being prioritised to ensure that they can register for the Zimbabwe School Examination Council (ZIMSEC) examinations.

Speaking in Parliament on Thursday, Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kazembe Kazembe said the Civil Registry Department was limiting the number of applicants for polythene-synthetic IDs.

He said:

On the issue of national identification, my ministry faces challenges in issuing polyethene synthetic identification.

This is due to a shortage of consumables and unpaid licences and dongles that require foreign currency.

Kazembe said due to the shortage of polyethene synthetic, the ministry has relied on issuing Green Copy Waiting Passes to citizens waiting for the plastic IDs.

The Minister also said they are planning to conduct a national mobile registration exercise once all the logistics are in place in order to end long queues at registry offices.

He said:

To address this situation, my ministry plans to conduct a national mobile registration exercise once all logistics are in place, this is to make sure that everyone gets a chance of applying for a national identity card and in order to curb long queues mobile registration exercise will come in handy.

Two Teachers Die From Covid-19

By A Correspondent- Two teachers have succumbed to COVID-19 while no pupil has died of the disease since the reopening of schools this term across the country.

This was revealed by the Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Paul Mavima while addressing National Social Security Authority (NSSA) pensioners’ representatives during an engagement forum held in Gweru on Thursday.

Mavima said:

There was a spike in COVID-19 cases in schools soon after reopening. The spike was associated with schools reopening but Government could not close the schools forever.

They had to open at some time and so the Government relaxed COVID-19 lockdown induced rules and regulations.

One or two teachers lost their life’s due to this virus but we are glad that we haven’t lost a child in the school environment.

We can’t celebrate the loss of lives because all the lives matter but Government is doing all it can to mitigate against the spread of the virus in and outside schools.

He said as winter approaches- measures should be put in place to protect the learners and teachers in the schools.

Schools opened for the first term of the year on 15 March, more than two months after the original date due to the second wave of the coronavirus which hit the country soon after the festive season.

Govt Mulls Online Passports Applications

By A Correspondent- Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe on Saturday said the integrated Information Communication Technology (ICT) solution being established for the Ministry will enable people to apply for passports and make an appointment with the Registrar General’s (RG) Office online.

Kazembe, who is the ZANU PF Mashonaland Central provincial chairperson, was speaking at a special party Provincial Coordination Committee meeting on Saturday.

He said when the system eventually takes off, no one will be required to physically visit the RG’s Office for a passport as the collection will be done at the applicant’s nearest Post Office.

The system will computerise and consolidate data from police, civil registration and immigration as a long-term solution to documentation challenges.

This will enable authorities to get rid of corruption and to assist in the arrest of criminals at immigration points, people who overstay and those who jump red robots.

Kazembe also said the Ministry of Finance has released funds for the procurement of specialised passport printing machinery and consumables for both passports and national identity cards, in a move that is expected to considerably reduce the backlog.

He however warned citizens not to expect dramatic changes overnight, but promised that considerable changes were “coming”.-statemedia

History As Mnangagwa Loses State House Decorum

Emmerson Mnangagwa

By A Correspondent | The pages of history turned at the weekend when ZANU PF President Emmerson Mnangagwa lost all state house decorum as a result of the ongoing recalling of MPs from his opponent Nelson Chamisa’s party.

Mnangagwa used the military: the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to alter the 2018 election results which purpose-deployment was announced on the state television, ZBC, in events that led to his party getting two thirds of Parliament, but has since gone further to publicly humiliate himself by stripping down the remaining MDC Alliance legislatorship through recalls engineered by a court-created small party which has also received military backing from its inception.

Chebundo In The Eye Of A Storm As Corruption and Abuse of power Exposed.

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | The 2023 campaign begins for Blessing Chebundo with his campaign manager Trythings Mutyandasvika who is also a manager at Rainbow Towers Hotel. Using his influence at work, Trythings Mutyandasvika who allegedly bribes Chiefs and government officials by getting the rooms at his hotel, was installed village head in Gutu despite not living there; and he is neither a member of the village.

Mr Trythings and his siblings left Gutu for Gomwe in 1982 but because his brother Blessing Chebundo who he is campaigning for to take the constituency in 2023 has abandoned Kwekwe and is now focusing to stand in Gutu, Trythings used his office at work to convince Chief Chitsa to install him a headman and a village head in order to master the campaign from the village levels. Trythings Mutyandasvika who had relocated to Hurungwe in 1982, has managed to force himself onto Chebundo village in Gutu North.

Mutyandasvika and Chebundo are brothers and the Chebundos are Mutyandasvika , so the plot to unseat the sitting MP is planned on more family grounds as Chief Chitsa is the matronal uncle of Chebundo and Mutyandasvika.

The advent of Blessing Chebundo in Zanu PF is a seismic shift and a well calculated move to thrust him ahead to snatch the seat regardless of the fact that he has not spent the required period in ZANU PF. after crossing the table between two political parties, Chebundo’s plan is to get support from the grassroots one headman at a time. This scandal has embarrassed chief Chitsa who is now caught in between principles and money as well, luxury Sheraton hotel rooms from Trythings Mutyandasvika Chebundo. “Barely three months after crossing the table from MDCA, Blessing Chebundo has moved quickly to takeover the Gutu North constituency. With Chief Chitsa thrusting his weight behind a powerful campaign team championed by Tariro Mutyandasvika and Trythings Mutyandasvika there are unprecedented moves to win village heads in Chitsa area of Gutu North and create a nucleus of political influence. “ said Mr Dunira of Gutu. Asked for comment a Gutu ZANU PF official who spoke on condition of anonymity said “These are notorious characters who will do anything to meet their selfish ends” Previous newspaper reports pointed at Blessing Chebundo’s ambition to establish a political base in Gutu North having been discarded in Kwekwe. The bizarre aspect of Chebundo’s political prostitution has seen him claim allegiance to Nelson Chamisa, then Dr Khupe and now to President Mnangagwa in under six months. At the same time he remains a key cog in the underhand manoeuvrings of G40.
Recently he has been singing praises of the first lady hoping to endear himself with president Mnangagwa in his quest to bounce back as an MP in 2023. Another Official who commented on the ground of anonymity said

“Well, the speed and the level of desperation does not seem a healthy move for a newcomer into a political party especially having crossed the line recently. The person of Blessing Chebundo is a poisoned chalice in Chebundo village and remains a traitor within the MDCA fraternity.”

“Chebundo does not have the blessings of his own village except Chief Chitsa, Trythings and Tariro Mutyandasvika who is in Ireland and is an active bank roller for the project. In order to achieve their plans they are starting from controlling the village heads to the traditional chiefs.” Said Mark Mbhasera a member of ZANU PF and close to the matter.
After winning Chief Chitsa to his stable, Blessing Chebundo is on a warpath to remove village heads who are not loyal to him. That process has been swift and is picking up. On 1 May 2021, Chief Chitsa calendestinely installed Trythings Mutyandasvika, the General Manager of Rainbow Towers a nephew of Blessing Chebundo and campaign manager as village head for Chebundo village. The former village head was de-registered at the Gutu DA’s office to pave way for the installation of Trythings as village head. That move is the start of a sustained campaign to make Chitsa area a no-go area for prospective contestants. Trythings Mutyandasvika and Blessing Chebundo are no longer resident in Chitsa, Gutu North as their parents moved to Hurungwe in 1982 but that was not a hindrance to their aspiration to control the constituency as they have managed to pay wards of cash to chief Chitsa”

How Trythings a GM at a prestigious hotel would choose to be a village head where he does not reside nor is known is a mystery. Tariro Mutyandasvika the campaign treasurer and fundraiser based in Ireland has been hosting the campaign team at her rural home which has been setup as a campaign base. Chief Chitsa has received funding for building his house from the team as part of the deal to whip all village heads into supporting Blessing Chebundo. Sources close to the case have confirmed that Chief Chitsa has been awarded a stand in ChristonBank where he is already building a house.
Since March 2020 Blessing and his brothers have caused havoc in the village and a peace order against Blessing Chebundo and his notorious campaign team was granted by the courts. As if that was not enough, Blessing Chebundo impersonated his cousin brother who was the village head in court papers in a bid to have his way. That act forms part of an ongoing criminal case which is before the courts. Gutu police have confirmed that a case of forgery and uttering was opened against a male and the investigations are on going. Under the pressure from Chebundo’ Mutyandasvika the disposed village Head Resenia Chebundo has gone into hiding. Blessing Chebundo the aspiring Gutu North MP is not a stranger to crime as he had a rape case against him. Clearly, Blessing Chebundo is never far from crime and what a shame he would wish to poison the atmosphere in Gutu North. Wondered another bewildered Gutu North resident.
“Zanu PF must be careful not to allow itself to be penetrated by through subversive elements pretending to cross the floor from the opposition.” Commented Mr Chitsa a cousin brother to chief Chitsa. Chebundo is a spent force.

This kind of politician must be left to depreciate and expire without spoiling the party. His campaign manager, Trythings Mutyandasvika who gives multiple allegiance to Zanu PF, MDCA and G40 abusing his position at Rainbow Towers is equally dangerous.

The secretary for Administration In ZANU PF was not available for comment and efforts to contact Masvingo Provincial Affairs Minister Mr Ezra Chadzamira were not successful.

Zanu Pf Midlands Senator In Soup Over Army Brutality

By A Correspondent- Midlands senator Maybe Mbohwa, who is also a senior Zanu PF official and women’s league commissar, is in soup after she exposed cases of army brutality for which she will likely be dragged before the ruling party’s national disciplinary committee.

Sources in the ruling party yesterday said the party’s national chairperson Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri, who is also Defence minister, was tasked with looking into the matter, following recommendations made by the Zanu PF Gokwe North district co-ordinating committee (DCC) that she should be demoted from party positions and be recalled from Parliament.

In February, the Midlands senator unwittingly exposed human rights violations by the military in social media posts.

She also suggested that she would engage President Emmerson Mnangagwa, Muchinguri-Kashiri and senior party officials to stop the harassment in the Midlands district. Mbohwa alleged that soldiers were beating up people indiscriminately, including the elderly in the district.

Midlands provincial chairperson Daniel Mackenzie Ncube yesterday confirmed to NewsDay that the province had received the recommendations from Gokwe North district.

Ncube said the matter had been forwarded to the national leadership since the province had no say over a women’s league senior member and senator.

“We got a report from Gokwe stating that the senator said something to that effect and the district was denying that the things happened. They want senator Mbohwa to be censured. We referred the matter to the national body because Mbohwa is above the province and so we referred the matter to Cde Muchinguri and that is where it is,” Ncube said.

Mbohwa confirmed a plot for her ouster by some party members.

If the matter is yet to be tabled and the province hasn’t said anything we will assume all is okay. We are so busy mobilising the five million votes for the President ahead of 2023,” Mbohwa said.

Gokwe North district agreed during its inaugural meeting recently to have Mbohwa censured and stripped of her powers so that she becomes an ordinary member and be recalled from Parliament.

The DCC chaired by Gokwe-Nembudziya MP Justice Mayor Wadyajena adjudged that Mbohwa had a sinister agenda after circulating an audio recording alleging army brutality.

Wadyajena described them as “baseless” allegations designed to ensure that the West imposes sanctions on security chiefs.

Four security chiefs including State Security minister Owen Ncube, intelligence boss Isaac Moyo, Zimbabwean ambassador to Tanzania Anselem Sanyatwe and police commissioner general Godwin Matanga were placed on the United Kingdom sanctions list in February for alleged human rights abuses.

Mbohwa, the DCC said, exposed the country to its enemies by propagating “lies” regarding the military attacks on civilians.

The army has in many cases been accused of attacking citizens, particularly during the COVID-19 lockdown period, but the government has denied the claims.

“I take great exception to this sinister plot by Mbohwa to ruin the image of the government and His Excellency Cde ED Mnangagwa as commander-in-chief of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces,” Wadyajena told NewsDay yesterday.

“Her actions are intended to harm the image of the country and our President in line with the impending sanctions review by the United States, the European Union and also as a justification for the recent United Kingdom embargo on some security service chiefs on the basis of human rights violations.”

Zesa Speaks Out On Fault Attendance Delays

By A Correspondent-Zesa said lack of service vehicles and poor remunerations were causing the power utility to take agers to attend electric faults.

The justification was presented by Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (Zera) board chairman Dr David Madzikanda during a media engagement meeting in Harare on Friday.

“In short, Zesa is incapacitated because of the level of tariff which is sitting at roughly USc7,5 when we are supposed to be upwards of USc10 per unit,” said Dr Madzikanda.

“So you can appreciate when they are incapacitated. What it means is that when there is a fault you can’t be responsive.”

Dr Madzikanda, who worked for Zesa for 17 years, said during his time, they were able to attend to faults even at midnight because the power utility had vehicles and a considerably incentivised labour force.
“But nowadays it (fault) has to wait for a day if you are lucky,” he said.
It might wait for a week, two weeks or never. Why? It is because they are incapacitated, they don’t have vehicles, they don’t have competent personnel to start off.

Zesa doesn’t have the capacity to pay and retain the calibre of staff they require. They also don’t have other materials. I know I am not painting a good picture, but essentially we are driving towards a situation where we should be able to support Zesa with a meaningful tariff to be able to achieve what we are talking about (universal access of electricity).”

Dr Madzikanda said it was better to have a correctly priced tariff compared to a lower tariff which did not encourage investment in new plants and service vehicles because the costs of not having power “are too ghastly to contemplate”.

He said even the drive towards Vision 2030 of an upper-middle-income economy would be affected without a steady supply of electricity.

Zesa has since adopted a stepped-up tariff where heavy users per month are punished by a higher tariff, while lower power users pay less.

Zera chief executive officer Mr Eddington Mazambani said: “Yes they have written to us requesting a tariff review, but they have to agree with the Ministry (of Energy and Power Development) first.”

Once the Ministry clears Zesa’s request, Zera then engages consumers such as the Government, mining, agricultural, commercial and domestic consumers to get their perspectives and act accordingly

Mliswa Slaps Ziyambi Down: You Can’t Use Prosecutors To Settle Personal Scores.

PARLIAMENT OF ZIMBABWE
Thursday, 15th April, 2021

HON. T. MLISWA: Thank you Mr. Speaker Sir, I must say that it is difficult when you have too powerful, intelligent, articulate women.  So, I must give credit and at times I wonder where the women’s capacity is but I see it, it is there somewhere and I should see more.  Women also take it upon themselves to further educate themselves like Hon. O. C. Z. Muchinguri from the struggle, she educated herself, Mai Mujuru and others.  So, continue to further educate yourself, it is important.
Madam Speaker 41 years after Independence we are close to it and this is when we talk about the founding principles of our country.  This is when we think of Josiah Tongogara, Nikita Mangena but 41 years down the line we are still debating on the rule of law, where are we.  I see that the ACP-EU was very clear about the rule of law, it was a key issue which was brought up to see if Zimbabwe part of the global world in terms of the rule of law when you have the State Security more focused on destroying people’s lives from a blatant use of State apparatus, where you expect State Security to be more of an economic tool which educate His Excellency about the economic sabotage but have turned themselves into a unit which deals with any voice that wants to speak.  Zimbabwe today is known for the wrong headlines where people are ambushed, people are killed through the CIO and there is no position which is given from the CIO about this; cases like that of Itayi Dzamara is one issue which whether you like or not the world knows about it and we have done nothing about it, we ignore it but we expect to be part of the global village. You have got a situation where despite that the High Court ruled that there must be a report from Home Affairs on where Itayi Dzamara is, there is no compliance on that.  So, you then ask yourself how we can be part of this global village when we still believe that arresting people for speaking is the way forward, behaving exactly like the Rhodesian system.  What is the difference between Zimbabwe and the Rhodesian system?  Sanctions were pushed against Rhodesia because it oppressed its people and today there is a black Rhodesia which is oppressing black people.  So, the rule of law has totally been disregarded and we have to be honest about it. For as long as we do not respect people’s human rights, we shall suffer economically as a country. Let us not question why sanctions are there.  Sanctions are there because certain institutions are being used to silence people, the same way our fathers pushed for sanctions because we were being silenced, the generations of today are also saying there must be sanctions because we are suffering.
We must look at our conduct as a country and leaders if it is in line with the late Josiah Magama Tongogara’s vision of a one Zimbabwe where black and white children play together. Is it in line with Nikita Mangena vision as young as he was, he went to the struggle and he was able to liberate this country because he believed that it is a country that is for everyone and so forth.  So, to me the aspect of the strong institutions of the SDG16 likes of Hon. Moyo read out, the importance of that is justice on strong institutions.  There is no nation – if you look at America, America’s pride is in its institutions being independent and being strong.  No matter what you say about America the institutions remain strong. The citizens can do what they want, Donald Trump can do what he wants but you cannot change the institutions and institutions are critical in the growth of any country – not only that there must be independence of these institutions not institutions where CIO is knocking on the door to check on what people are doing instead of doing their jobs and so forth.
You then ask yourself that are we really independent enough despite that we are 41 years past the liberation struggle, we are totally far from it and we have to be honest, we need to also look at many aspects.  Institutions are influenced to make decisions, is the Judiciary independent?  The Prosecutor General, Zimbabwe Human Rights Commissions, Zimbabwe Election Commission and police are they independent?  You see that at the end of the day as you keep going down the list, you are slowly stopping your ticking because the independence is not there. The struggle was about a Zimbabwe for everyone not a Zimbabwe for one party no.  The moment that we go over party politics and stand up even the ruling party can entertain Zimbabweans to be part of it in terms of governing the country then we say we have a Zimbabwe.  We have to be politically mature in understanding that and political maturity is not there, why cannot we as Zimbabweans have a thing that is able to build this country and which when we go out there, we speak with one voice.  That is the reason why when you see us going out, even with these things, it becomes difficult for you to have an agenda that talks about Zimbabwe and so forth.  We must be able to look at the judiciary, like the report said, which is transparent and fair.  While the Constitution can be amended any time to suit whatever which is in line but more or less, the medical doctors in their thinking and wisdom realised that when somebody is 60 or 65, they cannot do certain things and scientifically it was proven.  Of course, the Constitution can be changed to accommodate certain issues but I do not know whether these issues are national or personal issues – it is something that needs to be looked at.
So I am also going to talk about attacking us being a country that is not nationalistic and patriotic.  There is nobody who does not love their country, there is nobody who is not nationalistic but we seem to accuse each other – this one is not nationalistic.  The whole point of the liberation struggle was one man one vote – democracy and when you do that, then you open yourself to a democratic process where we are saying that everybody has a right to belong to any party.  Our Constitution is very clear in terms of freedom of association.  Are we happy with it that people can associate with whoever they want?  Freedom of expression is equally there and so forth.  It becomes difficult for parties going to represent Zimbabwe to be able to debate on this when we know that there are issues and so forth where they are coming from.
We must look at the issue of the Executive, a responsive Government; these are one of the issues that were brought up.  Do we have a responsive Government?  Do we have a Government that is able to be proactive?  Do we have a Government that is people centered?  Do we have a Government that comes up with solutions that concern the people or we have a Government that thinks of itself?  The reason why I say that is the level of corruption is alarming.  Hon. Misihairabwi-Mushonga spoke about it to a point where for you as Zimbabweans to go and talk about sanctions and corruption, if we put these two there Madam Speaker, do we go and push the sanctions or corruption issue?  They will tell you no, let us push the corruption issue first and not the sanctions issue.
Like Hon. Misihairabwi-Mushonga said, sanctions, despite them not being good are overtaken.  They have been superseded by the aspect of corruption where today there is selective application of the law.  This one can be arrested and that one cannot be arrested.  Even allegations on the Commissioner General of Police where you write in black and white to say, he has violated PRAZ procurement; he has been buying cars and he is still not investigated.  Where do we go as a country?  Who gives you money when people in these high offices are not subject to being investigated?  They are not transparent in their discharge of duty and so forth.  The powers and roles might be operational at the end of the day but without that, it does not mean anything.
Civic society, journalists, my heart bleeds, my heart bleeds to see that we are still excited about arresting journalists who are just writing stories and we believe that we are a growing nation when we want a nation to be quiet.  You cannot keep a nation quiet.  In their hearts, they are speaking and will act one day.  This is exactly what happened with the First Republic when people could not speak but when there was a time to speak in God’s time and they indeed spoke on 17th November.  God ultimately rules and no matter what you do, he is watching.  God is always watching and at an appropriate time, he will move in and save his people.
Lessons are not learnt, we repeat the same mistakes every day.  Hopewell, whether you like him or not, when he writes something, you go on him.  Members of Parliament, Hon. Sikhala is arrested, Fadzai Mahere is arrested and of course I am their favorite client. I do not have to really talk about myself but what does it give?  A headline, lawyer arrested, a Member of Parliament arrested but fortunately for those on the other side, they are not harassed but us on this side, we seem to be the easy target, the easy fish and so forth.  It does not mean that the other side does not commit crime but they are only arrested when there is factionalism happening.  That is the only time that they are picked up but besides that, they have a good walk in the park and so forth.
So do you expect me Madam Speaker, with this persecution that happens to me, to stand up and defend this country?  Do you expect me to do that?  Were the former liberators of this country prepared to support Rhodesia when they were being oppressed?  No, they did not.  They were detained, the late Mugabe, the late Joshua Nkomo, the current President and Didymus Mutasa, you can name them but Zimbabweans still had victory despite them being detained.  So why can lessons not be learnt at the end of the day?
When you are in power, there is a word called ‘meekness’.  Do not use it to show people that you are powerful.  One day you will be out of power.  We have people who were ministers, who were powerful but today they are in exile and a lot more will follow.  Mark my words on this day, a lot more will follow.  Just three days before Independence, you will remember what I said – a lot more will follow.  When we used to say it in this Parliament, Madam Speaker you remember?  Most people could not talk in ZANU PF.  I could speak out and talk about the thing, I could talk about the Former First Lady and they were quiet.  These votes that we are having today, some of them were not here.  Hon. Mudha you know, he will tell you that we would talk about strategies on how we would be able to win the struggle Hon. Mudha, but today, you are attacking us now.  So who is your friend?  Him and I would go and talk about it out there.  We were giving him information to give to the President on G40 – he knows it.  He could not speak, I could speak but today they enjoy the cake on their own and Mliswa is wrong.  I am equally protected by God and my ancestors, they cannot allow me to work for a nation and fold their arms when I am being attacked.
No, we are Africans, when a man has worked hard, let us have a situation where we know where he is coming from – choose your eyes and choose your friends.  Who is your enemy?  We had this situation but today we have crossed over, we are not together as some are closer and yet those who were foot soldiers are not there.  No wonder why factionalism and division will always happen for as long as political parties exist because one says, I fired the first shot and the other one says, but I was behind.  So who do you think fired the shot?  These are some of the issues that make it pretty difficult for us to get out there.
We have the issue of the unemployed youths, mahwindi. Ahewa, ahewa, haisi mhosva yavo, it is not their fault Madam Speaker.  Mabasa hakuna.  When unemployment is high Madam Speaker, there is crime, drugs there is this and that.  So kuenda kuno vavharira, hapana zvamuri kuita.  Now armed robbers are more.  If you go to Norton, young boys are going into properties Madam Speaker – 19 of them with guns and holding people hostage.  They are following people’s money in their homes, they do not even have time for the safe anymore.  They pitch up and say, go and open the safe in your office.  So the crime rate is going high.  We can issue statements about unemployed people and say we must issue a statement of this.  The statement that must come from the Government is how many jobs have been created for the youth?  Vocational Centers were mentioned, how many vocational centers have been created to substitute unemployment so that by the time the economy gets better, people are trained to do something.  So we have that problem of unemployment and crime going high as well.
The COVID-19 pandemic, I am sorry to say, I used to send my children to Greystone Park Primary School because I believe in a Government institution.  Madam Speaker, I went to drop off my children, afternoon the other one was going there.  You go and drop them off, what have you learnt?  Nothing, I had no choice but to send them to a private school.  I had to drive to Rydings  School and say, I cannot allow the future of my children to be destroyed like this.  Government schools, that is the end of those children, my son was part of it, the situation is just out of this world.  It is just that most of the people cannot afford private schools but if you have your child at a Government school, you will appreciate what is going on.  The education is as good as dead.  The difference between those in Government schools and those in private schools – I do not know and to me, God knows how he is going to deal with that imbalance but I can tell you that education is as good as finished because COVID has caused havoc.  Government has not capacitated the schools in many ways.
One of the issues which I thought was missing was the issue of an economic recovery for Africa.  Hon. Moyo was correct in giving all the problems.
THE HON. DEPUTY SPEAKER: Hon. Mliswa you are left with 5 minutes – [HON. M. MLISWA: Inaudible interjections]-
HON. T. MLISWA: I think you are really out of order, this is not a Mashonaland West meeting, here we have the Speaker.  Hon. Speaker, can you put an order, this is not a Mashonaland West meeting by the Governor.  I am not a brother when I am here, I am a Hon. Member of Parliament, and we are brothers and sisters at home.
THE HON. DEPUTY SPEAKER: Order, Hon. Mliswa!
HON. T. MLISWA: Madam Speaker the issue of the COVID-19 has created many problems at the end of the day.  We need to see how best we can deal with it.  What about a stimulus package; Hon. P. Moyo read very well but I did not hear a stimulus package for Africans, it was not mentioned.  So, how does the economy recover? It seems like we go there we talk, we have coffee and come back yet the only way recovery can happen on such a pandemic is a stimulus package.  What is the EU doing to give us a stimulus package? These are the issues that we are supposed to be talking about.
The Sovereign Wealth Fund – what has happened to it? We have spoken about it years and years, this Parliament has mentioned it, but there is nothing that has happened.  Can we get the Sovereign Wealth Fund going so that we have money?  All these schools which need money, the Sovereign Wealth Fund would have money pumped out to all the areas of Government which need money.
Finally, I do not know whether EU and Africa are equal partners, it is their politics of just entertaining us.  Why has the delegation from Zimbabwe not spoken about sanctions in those meetings?  It is not noted in the report.  Instead of us talking about sanctions here, we know them!  Can you take them to Europe, can you take them to America when you go there?  The same ways we attack those whom we say are selling the country through sanctions, you are also not doing us any good when you jump into Europe and not talk about sanctions. Represent the country that is what is important.
What I did not hear from this report was the remuneration of other Members that you are with – Zimbabwe.  I thought that would be important.  You can only be as effective as what you are eating and what is in your pocket at the end of the day. Other than that it becomes difficult.  So, I did not hear that.
I want to applaud Members of Parliament despite the different parties we belong to.  I must say this on record, they have been loyal to this country, and they have been patriotic to this country and are nationalistic.  Unfortunately, we are in a profession which does not say thank you, which hammers you every day.  When we talk about the remuneration, it makes headlines but we are not different from anybody else.  We are pushing together that can we get better remuneration and that remains the case.
We are sending soldiers to EU who are hungry and when they are there, they end up being compromised, being given things and they cannot speak.  May our soldiers be well equipped so that when they go to these sessions they are ready and not compromised because hardly do they go there with enough for them to win the war.
The report was good Hon. Priscilla Moyo, I really liked it and you touched on a lot of issues which are pertinent.  Portfolio Committees are only as a result of the Chairperson.   If the Chairperson has no drive, the Committee is dead.

HON. T. MLISWA:  Madam Chair, I think that Hon. Chasi hit the nail on its head.  I think what is important is for us to proceed with the business of the day.  We will waste a lot of time and that is the reason that I even said to Hon. Ziyambi yesterday, we cannot debate judgments in here and I still maintain that.  If judgments are passed by the courts, instruct your lawyers to go and argue in court.  This is not a court of law, this is a Parliament where at the end of the day, we are another arm of the State and we must respect the other arm of the State.
So, I can see that Hon. Mushoriwa is very legally minded and would encourage him to pursue law so that he can be my lawyer too but for now, let us proceed to the business of the day.
Clause 2 put and agreed to.
On Clause 3:
HON. ZIYAMBI: Thank you Hon. Chair.  There is nothing called abuse of two thirds majority.  The two thirds are the people.  We are all seated here representing people so whatever we articulate and do here is a reflection of the voting pattern.  Therefore, the minority must not say that the majority wants this when the majority is speaking.
Let us not confuse and try to manipulate things.  We represent the majority and what we propagate is what the majority want. If you go into that Section in the Constitution, it says the President must choose a running mate not the people.  What is democratic about that Clause?  There is no guarantee that if the President is chosen today, if the will of God is that he must die a day after that, we will have a President that has not been chosen by the people but handpicked by a President.  Again, we debated this and the reason why it was deferred is because there were contestations.
Hon. Misihairabwi-Mushonga articulated it very well yesterday; she gave a historical perspective of what happened.  I even said the other party has experienced it when their late president ‘May his soul rest in peace passed away’ and they performed a coup de’tat.  Why did they not follow this for certainty, the certainty that they are talking about.  So, I believe that these are personal preferences that have not been proven worldwide.  So I urge that we proceed Hon. Speaker.
HON. T. MLISWA:  It is important for us to realise that the Constitution has a provision for amendments.  This very same document has provisions for amendments and the provision for amendments are there.  Section 2 of the Constitution, Madam Speaker, talks about the supremacy of the Constitution.  That the Constitution is the supreme law of Zimbabwe and any law, practice, custom or conduct inconsistent with it is invalid to the extent of the inconsistency.  The obligations imposed by the Constitution are binding to every person, natural or juristic, including the State and all executive legislative and judicial institutions.  Legislative – meaning us and judicial institutions and agencies of Government at every level, and must be fulfilled by them.
So equally while we are debating this, we have got to understand the Constitution can be amended and the process that we are going through is the process which is necessary, but let us also understand one thing which is democracy is stubborn.  I will tell you why democracy is stubborn.  The majority will have their way; the minority will have their say.  Maybe it is the minority having their say but ultimately the majority will have their way.  Thank you.
HON. GONESE: I disagree Madam Speaker.  If you look at the clauses, the substantive clause is actually referring to section 92 not 91.  If you look at the clause we dealt with it relates to section 91 and not section 92.  It talks about qualifications.  When we talked about qualifications, we have not said that there should be no election.  So for me, I am still entitled to debate because these are separate clauses notwithstanding that some of them are consequential upon each other.
The point remains that I am entitled to make substantive submissions on the merit of the removal of election of Vice President.  It is my submission that there was a lot of debate and there are a lot of countries with similar provisions and some of them on our continent.  I will refer to Nigeria, Malawi, Ghana who have elections of President and Vice President simultaneously.  As we speak, the President of Malawi, Chakwela and his vice President Chilima were elected together on the same ticket.  What it means is that when it comes to the power dynamics of the offices, I will give an example of America.  After their recent election, Trump did not want to accept the results of the election and the role of the Congress, Senate and the House of Representatives.  Seating jointly as Congress was simply to validate the election and the person who presides over that joint sitting is the Vice President.  Trump tried to arm twist his Vice President to do what he wanted but because the VP was elected in his own right, he was able to resist and Trump was powerless to do anything about it.
I believe in terms of the principles of democracy it is actually a desirable situation to have a VP who has also been elected in his/her own right so that if you have such a scenario where the President goes rogue, you have got another office which you can rely upon knowing very well that the power of the VP is vested in that VP by virtue of an election from the electorate and they have their mandate from the electorate.  I think it is a good principle and I submit that there are no good reasons why we should depart from it.  The fact that it was suspended for ten years does not make it invalid because when we look at that section, it is actually a substantive section of our Constitution, Section 92.  I maintain that it is desirable for us to remain with this clause.  I know that others may have fears but why do you want to remove it before you have even implemented it?  Why not try it first and see if it is not workable because other countries in our continent have done it successfully.
I therefore submit that I am not in agreement with Clause 4 which seeks to remove the election of a President and his two Vice Presidents as part of one ticket.
HON. ZIYAMBI: Hon. Chair, I have already made my submissions earlier on regarding this, but let me also add that if you go into the very same Constitution in Section 99 – functions of Vice President,  the Vice President assists the President in the discharge of his or her function and it goes on to say, he may be assigned a Ministry that the President may assign to them.  So basically, the function of a Vice President is simply a help mate but now you want a help mate to be subjected to the same electoral process for the purposes of helping.  You are creating two centres of power because the helpmate and the person elected will all have gotten their mandate from the people.  If you are looking for an assistant, you do not look for an equal.  You look for somebody who will be able to listen to you and execute what you instruct.  So even if you look into this Constitution, it does not give a specific function to the Vice President save that he/she must assist the President  So what is wrong with he/she who is being assisted to choose their own assistants and fire them too if they are not following their instructions?  However, if you look into this Constitution, a President cannot fire his or her assistant; if you look at the removal clause of the President.  So you are creating a monster that can choose to listen or disregard the President knowing fully well that the removal processes are entrenched in the Constitution and it is very difficult to remove that particular individual.  So we may want to compare with other nations but there are several contradictions in our Constitution.  I want a helpmate but I cannot fire that helpmate even if they have failed to help me.  So I submit that as we have already done, let us proceed and scrap this condition that this person must be voted for.  I thank you.
(v)HON. MUSIKAVANHU: [Network Challenge]
HON. T. MLISWA: I agree with what the Minister is saying but if you go to Section 97 of the Constitution, I need clarity. It talks about the removal of the President or Vice Presidents from office and it has conditions.  If the President is the one who is appointing, why should there be conditions to remove the Vice President.  I need clarity on that.  If we are going to say the President must appoint, he will equally disappoint.  At the end of the day, if the President fails to discharge his duties, the Constitution still has a provision to have him out.  I see no problem in that because it is still catered for.
We must also reach a point where we cannot be obsessed with elections all the time because they cost money.  You have a presidential election and vice president – do you not feel for tax payers.  You want elections yet you are not being taken care of properly here.  Why does not that money be channelled to Parliament so that our remuneration is better?  We need to be like UK – we need to reach a consensus. At 41 years, we should be able to share the same vision.
A hunter hunts with his dogs.  There is no hunter who goes hunting with someone else’s dogs.  You choose the dogs – I want bingo, ginger or this one then you go and hunt.  If you do not come back with a hare, you are kicked out of the house by the wife because you did not bring meat.  The provision is there to also be divorced.  It is strictly clear – let us not worry about semantics yet it is clear at the end of the day.

HON. MOLOKELA-TSIYE: I wanted to add my voice in terms of this Clause to say that I think what we are having here is a problem that we are failing to appreciate two important points. The first one is that a Constitution of a country is like a Bible or Koran. So, when you enact a Constitution, especially this particular Constitution which is the one that we enacted in 2013 through a public process of consultation that ended with a referendum; the reason why as a country we had to do a referendum was because we appreciated the fact that when you are enacting a Constitution, you are enabling the people of Zimbabwe to have a say – [HON. MEMBERS: Inaudible interjections.] – I am commenting on the Clause on the issue of a running mate and I am saying that why it is important for us as a country not to change it is because the constitutional process of amendment that we did in 2013, in its wisdom as a country collectively, we appreciated the need to separate the difference between a ruling party, a government and a state so that as a country we are sort of protected from the instability and volatility that we all know happens in political parties. So, a running mate – a Vice President who is ready to takeover in case there is need for such is good for the stability of the State and Government because we cannot wait for a party to discuss that issue when a country needs leadership and guidance. I am saying it is important that we maintain this Clause that there should be a running mate. We are not supposed to change it.
HON. T. MLISWA: Hon. Members, this one is very important. The issue of the Vice President taking over and the party choosing is of no consequence, why? Because 129 (i) (k) has that provision and it can recall anybody. So, even if the Vice President is elected the party can still recall and so it is catered for by that provision.
Clause 9, put and agreed to.
On Clause 10;

On the motion of THE MINISTER OF JUSTICE, LEGAL AND PARLIAMENTARY AFFAIRS (HON. ZIYAMBI), the House adjourned at Twenty past Eight o’clock p.m. until Tuesday, 20th April, 2021.

Zanu PF Honours 2008 Terror Thug

By A Correspondent-Zanu PF has honoured the Zaka’s 2008 terror campaign leader and a Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) colonel, Christopher Rufu Mayoyo,

Mayoyo died last Friday and was declared a liberation war hero. He was buried at his Jatala Farm on Tuesday last week.

Mayoyo’s alleged brutality left more than 10 people dead and dozens of others injured, some of them maimed for life.

He was in charge of a military “death squad” in Zaka which led a violent campaign after Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF lost the 2008 general election to the opposition MDC in the first round of polling in March of that year.

July Moyo Intensifies Fight Against MDC-A Led Councils

By A Correspondent-The government has ordered all councils in the country to update their valuation rolls before the end of the year so that they can calculate their fiscal capacity and be able to positively work towards increasing their Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

President Mnangagwa has spearheaded the move of coming up with provincial GDPs, with the President saying each province must come up with its economic plan.

Speaking during the handover and launch of the Local Authorities Database System (LADS) and Ward Profiles for the Matabeleland and Midlands provinces in Bulawayo yesterday, Minister of Local Government and Public Works, July Moyo said as a move of improving innovations at local authorities they were now required to update their valuation rolls.
LADS is a local business solutions’ software developed by the Harare Institute of Technology for local authorities to store and manage vital data related to council operations and service delivery.

Moyo said he had since agreed with the Minister of Finance and Economic Development Professor Mthuli Ncube that 10 percent of the devolution funds sent to councils will be used for this exercise.

Zesa Intensifies Push For Tariffs Increase

By A Correspondent-Zesa has intensified its tariff push justifying the development to incapacitation of its workers.

Zimbabwe Must Embrace Racial Minorities

It is now forty one years since Zimbabwe secured its independence from the white minority oppressive regime. Forty one years is a life time and the only minorities left in Zimbabwe are true Zimbabweans.

They can be white, Asian, coloured, Parsian, etc , these individuals will never leave Zimbabwe and are part of the Zimbabwe’s cultural system and need to be protected.  We have an Indian delegation currently in Bulawayo and Zimbabweans need to speak with only one voice and there is no better time to be very loud as a group than now. Our national language is English yet we do not embrace the few English speaking minorities left.

The constitution of Zimbabwe protects ethic minorities and we expect the political system to protect the last few racial minorities left in our beautiful country.  Minorities are our national cultural, ethnic, religious and linguistic groups whose minority status has been recognised by the Zimbabwe’s constitution and by internationally binding declarations. The white minorities used to control the judiciary and Zimbabwe’s economy but that is no longer the case. Zimbabwe’s farming community and the industry is now dominated by the black majority.

We want the whites be it Russians, east Europeans or South Africans yet we do not recognize our white Zimbabwe who have been here battling the economic challenges together. Zimbabwe’s minority rights are based on the recognition that minorities are in a vulnerable situation in comparison to other groups in Zimbabwe’s society, namely the majority population, and we should aim to protect members of a minority group from discrimination, assimilation, presecution, hostility or violence, as a consequence of their status.

It should be highlighted that minority rights no longer constitute privileges, but act to ensure equal respect for members of different communities. Zimbabwe’s rights serve to accommodate vulnerable groups and to bring all members of society to a minimum level of equality in the exercise of their human and fundamental rights.

History has shown that the protection of national minorities is essential to stability, democratic security and peace worldwide. Pluralist and genuinely democratic society should not only respect the ethnic, cultural, linguistic and religious identity of each person belonging to a national minority, but also create appropriate conditions enabling them to express, preserve and develop this identity. Zimbabwe should create a climate of tolerance and dialogue necessary to enable cultural diversity to be a source and a factor, not of division, but of enrichment for each society.

The Zimbabwean Government should recognize that central to the rights of minorities is the promotion and protection of their identity and they continue to have influence in our economic development. Zimbabwe’s white, Asian, coloured, etc, there is a need to promote and protect their identity which prevents forced assimilation and the loss of cultures, religions and languages on the basis of the richness of the world and therefore part of its heritage. Non-assimilation requires diversity and plural identities to be not only tolerated but protected and respected.

Minority rights are about ensuring respect for distinctive identities while ensuring that any differential treatment towards groups or persons belonging to such groups does not mask discriminatory practices and policies.  Therefore, positive action is required to respect cultural, religious and linguistic diversity, and acknowledge that minorities enrich society through this diversity.Forty one years after Zimbabwe independence we do not have minorities employed in government as teachers, police officers, etc, the participation of persons belonging to minorities in public affairs and in all aspects of the political, economic, social and cultural life of the country where they live is in fact essential to preserving their identity and combating social exclusion.

The Government of Zimbabwe need to put in place mechanisms  to ensure that the diversity of society with regard to minority groups is reflected in public institutions, such as national parliaments, the civil service sector, including the police and the judiciary, and that persons belonging to minorities are adequately represented, consulted and have a voice in decisions which affect them. Participation must be meaningful and not merely symbolic, and recognised for instance, that minorities are commonly underrepresented and that their concerns may not be adequately addressed.

The participation of women belonging to minorities is of particular concern. 41 years is the best time to fight as a united front and embrace the racial minorities of this country by giving them the opportunity to be part and parcel of Zimbabwe’s system. We should speak with one voice for a prosperous Zimbabwe.

Mnangagwa Deregisters Manicaland NGO

By A Correspondent- The government has shut down a Mutasa based Non-Governmental Organisation.

Connect, a family therapy and counselling training organisation based in the Mutasa district in Manicaland waslast week told to close its doors by the CIOs who delivered a letter to the organisation on Monday informing them that their operations should be stopped.

“You are required to stop operations with immediate effect,” read part of the letter.

One of the CIOs, Sarudzai Samungure, who works as the ‎community services officer for the Mutasa Rural District Council, who wrote the letter, said the local authority suspended Connect’s operations after a meeting with the organisation on March 19.

It was not immediately clear what Connect had done for its operations to be suspended in the Mutasa district. Samungure emphasised in her letter that Connect’s “co-operation in this matter will highly be appreciated”.
This comes a day after the state-controlled Herald newspaper published a story saying that “dubious NGOs” were “at it again”, accusing them of “selling diplomats false tales to attract funding”.

Connect is the first NGO to be banned by Zimbabwean authorities this year. The last was the Community Tolerance Reconciliation and Development Trust (COTRAD) from Masvingo, in March 2019.

COTRAD’s ban was set aside by Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo, who served as a high court judge at the time after Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights filed an urgent application challenging the district administrator’s decision to outlaw the NGO’s operations.

TimesLIVE reported in October 2020 that Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa vowed to deregister any NGO suspected of plotting to overthrow his government, and said the state was spying on “people of interest”.

NGO bans hark back to the Mugabe era. He would ban NGOs ahead of elections, making it difficult for the outside world to provide humanitarian assistance or monitor polls.

In 2008, at the height of Zimbabwe’s political and economic crisis, the government outlawed food aid agencies. The ban was reversed in 2009 after Mugabe was forced to form a coalition government with the late Morgan Tsvangirai’s MDC T.

MDC Alliance Mash East Youth Leader Attacked By ZANU PF Thugs Over President Chamisa Wallpaper

02-05-2021

Mashonaland East MDC Alliance Youth Assembly member, George Madziva was attacked by a mob of ZANU PF thugs led by their youth District Coordinating Committee (DCC) Chairman yesterday in Murehwa.

Madziva who is Mashonaland East Youth Secretary for Local Government said he was attacked at the instigation of a ZANU PF DCC Youth Chair who confronted him for putting President Nelson Chamisa’s picture as his phone wallpaper.

The notorious ZANU PF DCC Chairman then called his gang who ambushed Madziva on his way home.

Madziva sustained a badly fractured arm and bruises all his body from the vicious attack.

Among the thugs that attacked Madziva, there was one Masendeke, a known ZPCS Warden stationed at Murehwa Centre.

Madziva has since made a report at ZRP Murehwa and it is our sincere hope that the police will genuinely pursue the case.

Since the turn of the millennium, Murehwa has become one of the epicenters of politically motivated violence targeting opposition members.

In the post 2008 elections violence many lost limps, lives and property at the hands of a ZANU PF militia group, the Green Bombers.

It is for that reason as MDC Alliance Youth Assembly we are totally opposed to the re-establishment of a partisan National Youth Service recently approved by Emmerson Mnangagwa’s cabinet.

It is time we deploy our own Peace Officers to protect our parents in rural areas as we head towards the 2023 watershed elections.

Charity Organization Donates Personal Protective Equipment To Inmates

A HARARE-based organisation, Heart of a Woman Trust yesterday donated reusable pads, sanitary pads, and Covid-19 Personal Protective Equipment in the form of face masks and hand sanitisers to 55 women at the Mlondolozi Female Prison housed at Khami Prison Complex.

The donation comprised 55 reusable pads, 110 sanitary pads, 110 face masks and eight litres of hand sanitizers.
Speaking at the donation handover, Heart of a Woman Trust director Ms Verna Zisengwe said the donation will go a long way to assist the women prisoners during the times of Covid-19 pandemic.

“As a Trust we are passionate about women in general and most importantly about female prisoners. We aim to empower them and help them regain their confidence so that they know that there is hope after incarceration.

We donate basic necessities most of the times for these women and we have taken the initiative to further reach out to our incarcerated sisters in Bulawayo especially in these trying times of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Ms Zisengwe.

She also urged individuals, corporates and institutions to come together and help the targeted group of the less privileged.

“They also need us, prisoners are just human beings like us, they also deserve a second chance in life. So, it is up to you and I to come together and help these women who are incarcerated,” she added.

Ms Zisengwe said her organisation will continue to address women’s plight during incarceration through to release from prison and life beyond bars. She said the aim was to re-ignite the flame in them after release from prison by empowering and preparing them for effective re-integration into society by sponsoring income generating projects.

The Trust was founded in 2014 by a group of passionate Zimbabwean citizens working to address the needs of marginalised groups in society and promote gender equality.- The Sunday News

Revealed: Mnangagwa Plot To Raise Presidential Age Limit

Tinashe Sambiri|Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration is secretly planning to raise the Presidential age limit to 52.

Wadyajena Gets Senator In Trouble For Accurately Reporting Army Brutality

Justice Wadyajena

Midlands senator Maybe Mbohwa, who is also a senior Zanu PF official and women’s league commissar, is in soup after she exposed cases of army brutality for which she will likely be dragged before the ruling party’s national disciplinary committee.

“If the matter is yet to be tabled and the province hasn’t said anything we will assume all is okay.

“Her actions are intended to harm the image of the country and our President in line with the impending sanctions review by the United States, the European Union and also as a justification for the recent United Kingdom embargo on some security service chiefs on the basis of human rights violations.” -NewsDay

Let the medical professionals lead Covid-19 Public Health Management.

By Dr Simbiso Ranga.

Secretary for Health and Child Welfare, North American Province, MDC-Alliance.

The story of Covid-19 Vaccination in Zimbabwe is yet to be fully told. How the vaccination program is managed will determine whether Zimbabwe succeeds or fails. The medical professionals should lead the charge for success. As much as government determines policy regarding issues like Covid-19 regulations and vaccine choices, these policies should be based on the best advice of medical professionals and institutions.

When Zimbabwean citizens decide on whether or not to get vaccinated, they rely principally on the advice of their health care providers as a critical element of their decision making process, and they also look to family, friends, coworkers, spiritual and business leaders for validation of their decision. However, medical professionals remain key sources of credible information to all the aforementioned groups. It is therefore essential that these medical professionals be not placed in a difficult conflicted corner as to whether they should promote the vaccination campaign or not.

We believe that the Zimbabwean government is placing Medical professionals between a rock and a hard place because critical choices on Covid-19 vaccines are being made without transparency and accountability to both the profession and the whole population. Most health care professionals across the world do understand that vaccination is the ultimate solution in the fight against Covid-19.

Healthcare providers also understand that vaccine choice is a critical cog in this war, and should be based on sound science that emphasizes safety, efficacy and effectiveness. Institutions like the College of Primary Care Physicians of Zimbabwe (CPCPZ), the Zimbabwe College of Public Health Practitioners (ZCPHP), and other specialist professional colleges (Physicians, Immunologists, Paediatricians etc) should make their positions clear as independent professional and academic bodies. The Medicines Control Authority (MCAZ) as regulator must speak on behalf of government. They must clear the air on efficacy and safety.

Publish statistics and expert analyses of the program as we go along. We have now given close to 400 000 first doses; what have we learnt? We need to hear more from the Zimbabwe National Immunization Technical Advisory Group (ZimNITAG). These, and not post-cabinet briefings, are the institutions that will inspire confidence in the population and eliminate vaccine hesitancy.

There are questions that the government must clarify to Zimbabweans:

Why is it taking so long for the Sinopharm & Sinovac vaccines to get World Health Organization Emergency Use Authorization (EUA)? Are there other cost effective vaccines that have been approved by WHO that could be suitable for Zimbabwe? Are we utilizing the Covax facility optimally? Why did we not take a regional approach to vaccine choice when we know that at least 95% of the Covid-19 infections in Zimbabwe are due to the South African variant? Does South Africa know something we do not know regarding the best choice of vaccines for our region? South Africa is a regional leader with more resources, both scientific and economic, and their choices in this regard cannot be ignored.

The China CDC Director made a rare material public comment regarding Efficacy of Chinese developed Covid-19 vaccines according to the public media. We are still waiting for the government of Zimbabwe to clarify to us what he meant and how that should influence our perception of the Chinese vaccines. Whenever there is a development that can have significant impact on our thinking regarding safety, efficacy and effectiveness of the vaccines, it is mandatory for government to come out clearly and illuminate our minds on current government thinking. This thinking should not be random and purely political, but should be based on sound scientific advice supported by the experts in the field. Let us borrow a leaf from other countries that have shown a great deal of transparency regarding efficacy and safety issues. South Africa, most of Europe and America had issues with the AstraZeneca & Johnson and Johnson vaccines and they communicated their findings and courses of action clearly to their citizens. We expect a similar level of transparency and accountability to the population. It builds confidence in the vaccination program. Vaccine hesitancy is fuelled by mystery and opacity.

We are not yet out of the woods. Let us learn from India and other countries that thought the worst was over, but are now battling a ferocious second wave. Our hearts go out to the people of India at this very trying period in their history. We greatly appreciate the help they have given to Zimbabwe, and indeed to Africa as a whole, and we pray for their speedy recovery as a nation.
In conclusion, YES, we need Zimbabweans vaccinated as fast as we can. Winter is fast approaching. Equip health professionals to drive the messaging. It is not too late. Improve transparency as a government and hold yourselves accountable to Zimbabweans. Together we will beat covid-19 and prevent catastrophe.

Cattleman Snatches Married Woman

The usual trend is that a man will definitely send a cheating wife packing, a Nyanga man has expressed his undying love for his wife even though she cheated on him with his best friend, a herdsman.

Martin Kanyanani of Muzika Village under Chief Saunyama, just like the Biblical Hosea’s undying love for his unfaithful wife Gomer, continues to love his wife Chipo.

Kanyanani says his close friend Thomas Nhipura has been bedding his wife for the past year even when she was pregnant with the couple’s only child.

He said he trusted Nhipura so much and would allow his wife, Chipo Kanyanani, to hang out with him.

The matter recently came to light at Chief Saunyama’s court as Kanyanani was demanding compensation from Nhipura for bedding his wife.

Nhipura defaulted the court hearing.

During the court hearing, Kanyanani professed his undying love for Chipo. He said:

Although she cheated on me, I still love my wife. I do not intend to surrender her to Nhipura or her parents.

My love for her never changed after I heard about the affair. She even confessed to me. I just felt betrayed, but I still need her as my wife.

I cannot make silly decisions based on her single mistake. He lured and seduced her.

Kanyanani claimed that he was the last one in Muzika Village to know of Nhipura and Chipo’s affair.

The heartbroken man also told the court that he wants Nhipura to ask for forgiveness and pay for his sins.

Speaking before the court, Chipo confirmed that she cheated on her husband with the herd boy. She said:

I cheated with Nhipura but I do not know how it happened. Rumours went around until word landed in my husband’s ears.

He confronted me and I confessed to him. He then went to Nhipura and he also confessed.

I was wrong and fortunately, my husband understands.

Chief Saunyama adjourned the matter to a later date to allow Nhipura to attend the court hearing.- Manica Post

Window to Implement Reforms Has Closed And “2023 Elections Are Done” – Or So Zanu PF and MDC Acolytes Think

indepth...Wilbert Mukori

indepth...Wilbert Mukori
indepth…Wilbert Mukori

By Wilbert Mukori | Zimbabwe’s opposition leaders are becoming masters at making a mountain out a molehill whilst ignoring the real challenge before the nation.

“We have voiced our concern about objectionable clauses. Our concerns are reasonable, our concerns are legally grounded, our concerns are sustainable, and the choice is there for the honourable minister to remove those clauses,” said MDC-T leader, Douglas Mwonzora.

“Of course, we are trying dialogue to make sure that those objectionable clauses are removed. We are also against the amendment of clause 3:28, sub clause 7 of our Constitution.

“In terms of that sub-clause, if there is a need to extend a term limit for judges, that extension cannot benefit the incumbent (President). That’s 1.

“It also goes on to say that if there is a need to amend that clause, that amendment can only be done via a referendum.”

If any clause in the Amendment Bill No 2 can only by changed by national referendum then why did MDC’s MPs not bring this up in parliament?

My understanding is the running mate clause was suspended for 10 years in 2013, there was no referendum then. Surely Zanu PF can use the same mechanism to suspend the clause for another 10 years.

As for those criticising the MDC MPs for supporting the Amendment Bill in parliament. My understanding is that the Bill needed 2/3 majority in parliament to pass. Zanu PF, thanks to its dictatorial powers to rig elections, has 2/3 majority and so the Bill would have passed even if all the opposition MPs had objected. The critics are making a mountain out of mole hill and, worse still, they are making a farce over bolting the stable door when the horse has already bolted free.

MDC leaders deserved all criticism for failing to produce a democratic 2013 Constitution.

Paul Mangwana, the Zanu PF co-chairperson on the parliamentary committee that drafted the 2013 constitution, boasted that it was Mugabe “dictated” the new constitution. Morgan Tsvangirai, with his usual exaggerated exuberance boasted it was “MDC child!”. The very fact that the new constitution has failed to deliver free, fair and credible elections speaks volumes of whose words were hot air.

Beside drafting the new constitution, MDC leaders were also expected to implement a raft of democratic reforms to free the state institutions and existing laws from the control and corrupting influence of Zanu PF. MDC leader failed to submit even one reform proposal in five years of the GNU. Not one!

In June 2013, SADC leaders literally begged the MDC leaders not to participate in the coming elections until some of the key democratic reforms were implemented. “In 2013 the Maputo Summit, in June 2013, before the elections, the Maputo Summit was all about having the elections postponed – the SADC summit. I went there,” Dr Ibbo Mandaza, Director of SAPES, told Journalist Violet Gonda.

“I was there at the Summit and Mugabe pretended to agree to a postponement of the elections. If you recall, the postponement was based on the need to reform at least electoral laws.

“And after that Summit, Morgan Tsvangirai, Tendai Biti, Welshman Ncube, all of them were called to a separate meeting by the Heads of State of SADC in the absence of Mugabe, that same evening. And they were told; I was sitting there outside the room with Mac Maharaj; they were told ‘if you go into elections next month, you are going to lose; the elections are done’.”

David Coltart one of the MDC ministers in the GNU admitted in his Book, The Struggle Continues 50 years of Tyranny in Zimbabwe, that boycotting the 2013 elections was indeed “the obvious” thing to do. However, MDC leaders did not boycott the flawed elections because of greed.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the (2013) elections,” wrote Senator Coltart.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

By participating in the flawed and illegal elections, the MDC did not only give the electoral “process credibility” but most important of all gave the vote rigging Zanu PF legitimacy.

SADC leaders had seen the flaws and illegalities in the Zimbabwe electoral process and it was obvious Zanu PF was blatantly rigging the elections, “the elections were done”, as they told the MDC leaders. But when the regional leaders were confounded with the reality of the MDC defiance, which gave the flawed process credibility and the illegitimate Zanu PF legitimacy they accepted that reality.

Five years later, 2018, the political situation on the ground had not changed; not even one token democratic reform was implemented since the 2013 elections. It was obvious Zanu PF was once again going to rig the elections.

Four of the main MDC factions plus three more opposition parties had come together to form the MDC Alliance just before the 2018 elections. Leaders like Coltart could not hide behind the excuse of “the failure to agree a coalition” to justify their participation in flawed and illegal elections. They once again failed to do the obvious thing of boycotting the flawed and illegal elections out of greed.

And so, SADC leaders were once again confounded with the reality of the MDC defiance, which gave the flawed 2018 elections process credibility and gave legitimacy to the illegitimate Zanu PF regime. This time they not only accepted that reality but endorse the flawed process. “The elections went well!” said President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa.

Zimbabwe is going to hold elections in July 2023, in just over two years from now. The country has not implemented even one token democratic reform and the window of opportunity to implement any reforms has closed. It takes three years, at least, to formulate the reforms, implement them and for the reform to be felt by the ordinary people. And so, it is certain Zanu PF will rig the 2023 elections, “the elections are done”, as SADC leaders once aptly put it.

It is as clear as day that Nelson Chamisa and his MDC A, Douglas Mwonzora and his MDC-T and all the other opposition parties and candidates who participated in the 2018 elections will, if they can, participate in the 2023 elections, flaws and all. If they did not boycotting the flawed and illegal 2018 elections, why should they do so now!

It should be said that many ordinary Zimbabweans had no idea what the 2008 to 2013 GNU was about and therefore failed to grasp the enormity of the MDC leaders’ treasonous betrayal in failing to implement the reforms and in participating in flawed elections to give Zanu PF legitimacy.

The penny has since dropped as many Zimbabweans now see MDC leaders for the corrupt, incompetent and sell-outs they are. And, more significant, they now acknowledge the futility of participating in flawed and illegal elections.

Whilst there is very little one can do now to force Zanu PF and their MDC acolytes to postpone the 2023 elections there is a lot people can do to ensure the plebiscite is declared null and void and the vote rigging Zanu PF does not get legitimacy.

Zimbabweans must finally take this matter by the scuff of the neck; demand that there should be no elections until reforms are implemented. They must refuse to participate in political rallies, voter registration or any election activities. If the 2023 elections go ahead with no reforms then the process must be declared null and void.

SADC leaders must repeat their demand for Zimbabwe’s elections to be postponed until reforms are implemented and finally put an end 41 years and counting of rigged elections. SADC leaders have endorsed rigged elections because MDC leaders had let them down but it in doing so SADC leaders have not only punished MDC leaders but all Zimbabweans. Surely the nation cannot continue to suffer for the sins of a few.

The international community, notable the EU and the Americans, condemned the 2018 elections as having “failed to meet international standards” and produced a list of recommended democratic reforms. None of the reforms have been implemented and the international community must make it clear they will be consequences for failing to implement reforms. There must be no financial or material assistance to Zanu PF government to stage what is clearly yet another flawed and illegal election process. The vote rigging Zanu PF must not get legitimacy; saying the election “failed to meet international standards” is not enough.

MDC leaders are just wasting the nation’s time focusing on such issues as the Amendment Bill No 2; if Zanu PF rigs the 2023 elections and gets legitimacy the party will do as it pleases. Our task is to put an end to the curse of rigged elections and bad governance once and once for all.

With not even a token reform implemented the 2023 “the elections are done”! But what President Mnangagwa and his MDC cohorts must understand is that we are not done because this time they will not get legitimacy, they will not get away with rigged elections! – SOURCE: zimbabwelight.blogspot.com

Zimbabwe Lawyers For Human Rights May Day Statement

Statement by the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights in commemoration of International Workers’ Day.

ON International Workers’ Day, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) calls upon state and non-state actors to honour workers and celebrate their achievements in advancing labour rights.

ZLHR also congratulates the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) on reaching its 40th anniversary and commends its commitment to fighting for political, economic and social justice in Zimbabwe over the past 40 years.

International Workers’ Day is commemorated every year in Zimbabwe on 1 May and it aims to celebrate workers, their achievements and the successes of labour movements in expanding workers’ rights across the globe.

The day is an opportunity to reflect on the fundamental rights and protections that have been won by labour movements and trade unions.

These achievements include minimum wages, paid sick leave and paid holidays.

It is also an opportunity for workers to exercise their rights to peacefully lobby policymakers for fair wages and better working conditions.

In the context of Zimbabwe, this day is an opportunity for all persons to urge policymakers to align Zimbabwe’s labour laws with international labour standards, for the benefit of all workers.

Workers have a right to be provided with opportunities to work in their freely chosen fields and work that will allow them to secure a decent living, in terms of section 24(1) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

Government is obliged to adopt reasonable measures and policies, within the limits of its resources, to ensure that this right is fulfilled, according to the section.

The right to work opportunities that can support a decent standard of living is closely linked to the right to human dignity, which is one of the founding values of Zimbabwe under the Constitution.

The inherent dignity of each worker entitles them to humane working conditions and fair pay.

In the context of Zimbabwe, fair pay should take inflation into account and reflect the real cost of living.

This means that workers are entitled to pay that actually covers their essential needs, despite the presence of a minimum wage that might not realistically cover those needs.

The protection of workers’ rights to fair pay and humane working conditions is necessary for the advancement of socio-economic justice and the full exercise of their other rights under the Constitution.

The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted the lives of many workers in Zimbabwe, with many workers being forced out of employment due to the mandatory closure of some businesses by the government, in an attempt to contain the deadly virus.

The resultant unemployment has caused a drastic deterioration of the living standards of many families within the country.

The lack of a source of income has left many people in the country economically vulnerable and in desperate need of aid.

It is in this context that the state is urged to come up with robust relief mechanisms that will alleviate the plight of the numerous workers that have been forced out of employment by the coronavirus pandemic.

The state is also urged to ensure that the workers who remain employed are provided with the necessary Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and access to vaccines so that that they are protected from coronavirus.

On this International Workers’ Day, ZLHR calls upon:

State actors and non-state actors to honour workers and celebrate their achievements in advancing labour rights,
All members of society to join ZCTU in celebrating its 40th anniversary,
All members of society to lobby policymakers to align Zimbabwe’s labour laws with international labour law standards,
The state to take reasonable measures and policies, within the limits of its resources, to fulfil its obligation to provide work opportunities that can support a decent standard of living,
Government to ensure that workers work in humane conditions,
The state to satisfy workers’ demands for fair pay which takes inflation into account and reflects the real cost of living,
Government to set up robust relief mechanisms to support workers who have been forced out of employment by the coronavirus,
The state to ensure that all workers are adequately protected from coronavirus by providing them with sufficient PPE and vaccines.

Muzadzi Bounces Back

GIFT MUZADZI has been forgiven by Dynamos for alleged insubordination and is likely to retain his post as goalkeepers’ coach…

The former DeMbare goal-minder appeared before the club’s disciplinary committee on Tuesday.

He was suspended on April 13 after he reportedly criticised club treasurer Moses Chikwariro for giving the technical team US$3 per week for bus fare.

Muzadzi was also accused of sabotage for allegedly badmouthing the Isaiah Mupfurutsa-led executive.

Dynamos communications officer Yvonne Mangunda said the matter was an internal issue.

Club chairperson Isaiah Mupfurutsa could not be reached yesterday, while Muzadzi’s phone was not reachable.

However, it is believed the former Warrior’s player was given a strong reprimand.

Muzadzi will return for duty amid a goalkeeping crisis at DeMbare, who are still to find an experienced keeper to complement Taimon Mvula, who was in goals when Dynamos beat Highlanders 2-0 in the Independence Cup.

In terms of in-field players, the Glamour Boys are covered as all key players who had contractual issues signed for the club after the Uhuru Cup match against Bosso.

Skipper Partson Jaure and utility player Godknows Murwira were some of the influential players who were yet to be tied down.

Dynamos have assembled a decent squad comprising of 2019 Soccer Star of the Year King Nadolo, Slyvester Appiah, Tinotenda “Kedha” Chiunye, Juan Mutudza and Tinashe Makanda.

Dribbling wizard Tanaka Chidhobha, Shadreck Nyahwa, Barnabas Mushunje, veteran striker Newman Sianchali, David Temwanjira and former Triangle star Trevor Mavhunga are expected to be pivotal when the 2021 Premier Soccer League season starts with a cup competition on May 15.

The league is expected to start on July 17. The resolutions were made at a Premier Soccer League annual general meeting held in the capital on Friday.

The league sponsor, believed to be Delta Beverages, will be unveiled before the beginning of the cup competition.- The Sunday Mail

Charity Organization Donates Face Masks To Inmates

Warriors Intensify Preparations For World Cup Qualifier Against Bafana Bafana

There will be no major changes in the Warriors’ squad for the next World Cup Qualifiers, team manager Wellington Mpandare has revealed.

Zimbabwe will host South Africa in their opening Group G match before travelling to Ethiopia a few days later during the June international break.

Speaking to The Standard, Mpandare said they have already started sending invitations to players that have been selected by the technical team for the games.

Brendan Golloway, who is a former England youth international, has been included in the squad after he recently secured his Zimbabwean passport.

“Preparations for the World Cup qualifiers started soon after the Zambia match, and we have already sent invitations to the players that the coach wants for the upcoming matches,” the manager said.

“It’s predominantly the familiar faces except for Galloway, who recently got his Zimbabwean passport and there won’t be any new faces.”

Other Europe-based players, who missed out on the Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia in March due to Covid-19 travel restrictions, have also been included in the Warriors selection.

Mpandare added: “When we played Algeria last year, Fifa ordered clubs to release players for the matches and this year they gave the clubs the power to hold on to players, but it was for those particular matches.

“And for the upcoming matches Fifa hasn’t said anything, but we are confident that they would want all the players to take part in the World Cup qualifiers. And this time around it will be the off-season, so we don’t see any challenges arising.”

The Warriors squad will be announced anytime soon when coach Zdravko Logarusic returns to Zimbabwe from his native Croatia.

The gaffer, who was expected in the country yesterday, is now scheduled to arrive on May 11 to begin World Cup preparations in earnest.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Chigova Out Of Action Due To Injury

Zimbabwean goalkeeper George Chigova has been sidlined by injury, just two weeks after making his long-awaited debut for SuperSport United.

The big goalkeeper, who deputises captain Ronwen Williams at the Pretoria-based side, played his first game since returning to the club at the beginning of the season, when they lost 0-1 to Golden Arrows on April 22.

He is said to have suffered a knock during Matsatsantsa’s stalemate with Swallows FC a week later.

The injury forced him out of yesterday’s 1-1 draw with Baroka and Kaitano Tembo had to put third choice Boalefa Pule in goal, as Williams is also still out injured.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Let The Medical Professionals Lead Covid-19 Health Management

Dr Simbiso Ranga

MDC Alliance Health Alert

11th Edition

02 May 2021

What You Need To Know About Asthma

Here’s everything you need to know about complementary, alternative, and natural remedies for asthma, including which ones doctors say may actually help with asthma symptoms.

Some complementary therapies may help manage asthma symptoms (and the stressors that can make symptoms worse). But experts say never substitute alternative therapies for medications and treatments prescribed by your doctor.iStock
If you have asthma, odds are you’ve come across products marketed as “natural remedies,” “complementary therapies,” or “alternative treatments” for asthma symptoms.

According to the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), complementary therapies involve using nontraditional practices in combination with traditional medicine, whereas alternative treatments are used instead of traditional medicine. “Natural remedies” can fall into one or both these categories.

As of 2012, more than 30 percent of American adults turned to complementary therapies or alternative medicine, per the NCCIH. So, clearly, they’re popular — but when it comes to asthma, are they safe to use?

Popular options advertised as “alternative treatments” with claims of enhancing symptom control aren’t automatically safe to use, says Anju Tripathi Peters, MD, a professor in the division of allergy, immunology, otolaryngology, and head and neck surgery at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago.

It’s important to note right off the bat that certain things touted as potential remedies or complementary therapies for asthma, such as supplements, aren’t regulated in the same way prescription drugs are, and consumers should pay attention to the details of the research backing up any claims made, Dr. Peters says. For example, “Many have shown benefits in animals only,” Peters explains.

If you are going to try a “natural remedy” or complementary therapy for asthma, know that it’s not a substitute for your conventional asthma medication. “While some natural remedies may help, they should not replace the medications prescribed by someone’s doctor,” says Lakiea Wright, MD, a board-certified allergist and immunologist and an associate physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.

Skipping prescribed medications can have dangerous consequences, according to Mayo Clinic.

If you’re wondering which approaches might help when it comes to asthma management, here’s what you should know.

Which Complementary Treatments for Asthma Have Evidence to Show They Work?
When it comes to natural and complementary treatment approaches for asthma with high-quality evidence to back up their use, exercise stands out as the intervention with the most data behind it. Although, per the American Lung Association, exercise can sometimes trigger asthma symptoms (known as exercise-induced bronchoconstriction), research has shown regular exercise when done safely can help improve asthma control, too.

“If we look at exercise training, there’s strong evidence that it improves cardiovascular fitness, and that it improves quality of life,” says David G. Hill, MD, the director of clinical research at Waterbury Pulmonary Associates in Connecticut and a member of the American Lung Association’s national board of directors.

A trial published in August 2019 in Scientific Reports found that for mild to moderate asthma, a 24-week exercise plan involving aerobic exercise for at least 30 minutes three times a week, plus strength-training and stretching, helped improve asthma control and reduced shortness of breath.

In another trial, published in October 2020 in the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, researchers found exercise helped improve asthma control when compared with breathing exercises among people with moderate to severe asthma.

Be sure to consult your doctor before beginning any exercise regimen to avoid exercise-induced asthma, says Dr. Wright. “Your doctor may recommend medications to help prevent attacks,” she says. And stop any activity if you become short of breath, begin to cough, or start to feel pain or tightening in your chest, states the American Lung Association.

On days when the air quality outdoors is unhealthy, it’s best not to break a sweat outside, the American Lung Association says.

Complementary Therapies for Asthma With Limited Evidence
The following four treatments have some promising research to support their use, but experts say more evidence is needed to conclusively say where they fit into asthma management.

Breathing Exercises
There are a number of different breathing techniques, including the Papworth method, the Buteyko technique, yoga breathing, and deep diaphragmatic breathing, all of which tend to focus on controlled nasal breathing. Can they help people with asthma?

Some evidence suggests breathing exercises may benefit people with asthma, says Hill. According to a meta-analysis published in March 2020 in Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, moderate to very low certainty evidence suggests that breathing exercises improve lung function, symptoms related to hyperventilation — breathing that is heavier and quicker than normal — and overall quality of life for people with asthma.

A study published in October 2018 in the Indian Journal of Pediatrics suggests that breathing exercises may also help children with chronic mild to moderate asthma or uncontrolled asthma, but are less likely to help those with acute severe asthma.

Researchers note that more research is needed before doctors can recommend breathing exercises as a standard treatment for children with asthma.

If your doctor gives you the go-ahead to try breathing exercises, the Global Allergy and Airways Patient Platform outlines some techniques you can try for asthma.

Guruve Woman Kills Self Over Suspected Hubby’s Infidelity

By A Correspondent- A Guruve woman Melisa Murehwa (20) took her life by poisoning after she suspected her husband of cheating.

Mashonaland Central deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Naison Dhliwayo confirmed the case.

“I can confirm a sudden death by poisoning where a woman took a maize pesticide after suspecting her husby of cheating,” Dhliwayo said.

Allegations are that the now deceased Murehwa had a serious altercation with her husband Leo Jurio whom she accused of cheating.

The husband decided to take a walk after the misunderstanding and to his surprise when he came back he saw his wife writhing in pain.

He took her to Mudhindo clinic where she died upon admission.

Police warned people to respect the sanctity of life saying there is life after divorce hence people should not kill themselves if they disagree in marriage

Dotito Man Robs Minor To Pay S_exworker

Dotito man, Joseph Mafios (23) allegedly pounced on a 15-year-old who was coming from studies around 9pm on Thursday and robbed him of cash.

The minor told Mafios that he had no money but Mafios forcibly took the boy’s satchel and searched for money and found none.

He further stripped naked the boy and found US$5 in his pair of trousers before forcing the boy to flee.

Mashonaland Central police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe confirmed the case.

After taking the money, Mafios hired a sex worker Emily Chidzikoti and paid for the services with the loot.

The boy told his uncle about the robbery and filed a police report.

Police tracked Mafios and found him at Chidzikoti’s homestead behind a bar where they arrested him.

Mafios told the police that he had paid US$5 for sex services rendered.

Police warned parents and guardians to supervise their children while studying at home.

Insiza Villagers Fume Over Land

By A Correspondent- Some villager in the Khombo area of Insiza in Matabeleland South have accused their traditional leader of parcelling out land to outsiders, leaving them without enough grazing land for their livestock.

A villager from ward 22 said the area was now overcrowded after new homesteads were allegedly set up with Chief Jahana’s authorisation.

“We no longer have grazing land for our livestock and the children are beaten while herding cattle for letting them graze in those places,” the villager said.

“One of the boys was beaten and his arm was broken. We reported the matter to the police, but the culprit ran away.

“Women now fear for their lives as they are not allowed to fetch firewood beyond set boundaries.” However, Chief Jahana, born Ndumiso Khumalo, distanced himself from the allocation of new stands.

“There are people, who are selling the grazing area to the outsiders,” Khumalo

“I came with some of my people from Gokwe, who still today do not have places to stay.”-standard

Opposition Parties Rally Electorate To Register To Vote

Opposition political parties are rallying supporters to register to vote for the upcoming delimitation exercise for the 2023 general elections.

The parties have also upped voter registration awareness campaigns ahead of the exercise.

The delimitation exercise creation of new electoral boundaries will be conducted using census data.

The last delimitation exercise conducted in terms of the old constitution ahead of the 2008 elections and based on the Registrar-General’s voters roll saw the opposition crying foul that their strongholds had been halved.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has warned that Bulawayo, an opposition stronghold, will lose constituencies since the voter registered population for the city falls far short of the minimum threshold.

“The issue (of voter registration) is an emergency because the sadistic central government will not hesitate to reduce parliamentary seats for Bulawayo.

“It is, therefore, imperative that there be a convergence by stakeholders, in particular residents and prospective voters, around this important issue,” MDC Alliance provincial spokesperson Swithern Chirowodza said.

“We are targeting 500 000 new registrants and we encourage political parties, activists and society organisations to converge with us to produce the required synergies.”

ZEC has lifted the suspension on voter registration, but a ban on by-elections as a Covid-19 preventive measure remains in place.

Zapu and MDC spokespersons Iphithule Maphosa and Witness Dube respectively echoed the same sentiments as they pleaded with Zimbabweans, who are eligible to vote to register for the upcoming elections.

“The party is alive and well, and is already moving a gear up in ensuring that as many people as possible register to vote in the next general elections to avoid losing constituencies because of low voter registration,” Dube said.

On Friday, MDC president Douglas Mwonzora launched a voter registration campaign in Matabeleland South.

Maphosa weighed in saying financial challenges besetting the opposition party had not affected its voter registration awareness drive.

“While we as a party are financially constrained to physically assist at a larger scale, we have managed to help a few with logistics to do the actual registration after our information sessions within communities,” Maphosa noted.

“We also have highlighted the negative implications of non-response to calls for heightened registration in potential risk areas of Bulawayo and Matabeleland as well as lobbying for the abandoning of the law that resulted in constituency delimitation being regulated based on voter density.

“We advocate for this to be influenced by population density, needs assessments and the desire to achieve inclusive and equal representation.”

Finance minister Mthuli Ncube allocated $2.3 billion to ZEC in his 2021 budget, of which $1.744 billion is meant to fund the delimitation exercise. According to independent election watchdog, the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (Zesn), there has been little progress in implementing recommendations of observer missions on improving the quality of voter registration processes.

Observer missions in their recommendations after the 2018 harmonised elections emphasised the need for the establishment of more permanent registration centres and ease of registration in urban areas, particularly in Bulawayo and Harare, among others.

Zesn has been tracking progress on the implementation of the 2023 election observer mission recommendations that call for the review of the legislative and electoral framework against the country’s constitution, regional and international principles governing the holding of democratic elections.-standard

2008 Elections Terror Campaign Leader Honoured

By A Correspondent- Zanu PF has honoured the Zaka’s 2008 terror campaign leader and a Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) colonel, Christopher Rufu Mayoyo,

UBH Covid-19 Admissions Soar

By A Correspondent- The United Bulawayo Hospital (UBH) has in the last six weeks recorded an increase in Covid-19 admissions, an official has said.

Patients with Covid-19 who go to UBH are treated at the renovated Old Bartley Memorial Block and a Covid-19 facility run by Arundel Hospital at the institution.

“We are beginning see an increase in our admissions from zero to one to eight to 18 in less than six weeks. Maybe this means the third wave is upon us,” said UBH acting CEO Narcisius Dzvanga after receiving a donation of personal protective equipment from a United Kingdombased charity, Impilo Revival, last week.

Dzvanga, also the consultant physician in charge of Covid-19 patients, said the institution was in desperate need for more support of this nature to protect its health workers.-standard

MDC Alliance Trial Under Spotlight

Joana Mamombe and Cecelia Chimbiri

By A Correspondent- Britain says it is following closely the trial of MDC Alliance legislator Joana Mamombe and two other activists for allegedly faking their abduction.

Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova pleaded not guilty to charges of publishing or communicating false information prejudicial to the state when their trial commenced before Harare magistrate Bianca Makwande last week.

British ambassador Melanie Robinson tweeted: “Still following the case of Joana Mamombe, Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova closely.

“Very important that Joana continues to get the medical attention she needs.

“All prisoners have the right to equal and fair treatment under the law.”

Mamombe was recently removed from a private Harare hospital and returned to Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison before she could receive specialist treatment.

The trio were arrested on June 11 last year after their alleged abduction during a protest in Harare.

Their trial will continue on Wednesday.

Prosecutors accuse them of trying to avoid trial by flooding the courts with “vexatious” applications.

Last year, United Nations experts called for the release of Mamombe, Chimbiri and Marova, saying they were being persecuted.

They called for thorough investigations into allegations that they were abducted, but prosecutors insist the trio staged their abduction and alleged sexual abuse.

Meanwhile, the trial of Mamombe and seven other MDC Alliance activists accused of engaging in an illegal demonstration last year will start on May 13.

Mamombe, Chimbiri, Marova, Lovejoy Chitengu, Stanely Manyenga, Obey Tererai Sithole and Makomborero Haruzivishe were arrested in May last year.

Harare magistrate Vongai Gawuriro previously blamed the delays on the trial on Mamombe, accusing her of feigning mental illness.

“As long as the first accused continues playing the mental incapacity game on one hand and further committing crimes on the other and gets freed on bail, it will remain a hurdle for the proper administration of justice,” Gawuriro said then.

Both trials have attracted global attention with the government accused of persecuting the activists on political grounds.-standard

Former Air Zimbabwe Workers Reject Salary Arrears In Local Currency

By A Correspondent- Former Air Zimbabwe workers have vowed to fight against the payment of their salary arrears in local currency at a rate of US$1: ZW$1, arguing that the move is unconstitutional.

The 300 ex-workers are owed salary arrears from the period 2009 to 2015.

They were thrown out of employment on the strength of the infamous July 2015 court ruling that allowed employers to terminate jobs on three months’ notice.

The airline, which was struggling to pay full salaries and had resorted to part payments and giving out grocery hampers, took advantage of the ruling and effected job cuts on hundreds of it’s workers to stay afloat.

AirZim’s finances have been in shambles for years allegedly because of mismanagement and corruption. Many of its planes were grounded due to old age.

The national airline, entered external administration in 2018 as the government battled to protect it from creditors, who were owed US$341 million. It sent out debt settlement proposals mid-April with administrator Grant Thornton undertaking to release payments in local currency once creditors signed off their papers.

The basis of settling salary arrears in local currency stems from Statutory Instrument (SI)33 of 2019 and SI 142 of 2019, which converted all bank balances to Zimbabwe dollars at par with the greenback.

This means creditors who were owed US$20 000, for instance, would receive ZWL$20 000, according to a payment plan confirmed by external administrators.

But the Air Transport Union and National Airways Workers Union (ATUNAWN) vowed to fight to ensure that the affected workers are paid their dues in US dollars, the currency which was in use during the time of their employment at the airline.

The union accused the administrator of trying to hoodwink the affected workers into signing papers that would approve the release of outstanding salaries in local currency.

They said the forms issued by the administrator had a section that prohibited workers from demanding any other payments as soon as the airline settles the arrears for the 2009 to 2015 period.

This is despite the fact the workers are entitled to another payment after the December 2020 Supreme Court ruling, which ordered the airline to pay them 2015-2020 salaries.

The payment modalities are yet to be tabled.

The landmark ruling ordered Zimbabwe’s flag carrier to reinstate all its former permanent employees whose contracts were terminated on three months’ notice in July 2015.

Immediately after the ruling, the airline put the workers on paid leave.

The contentious clause contained in the forms issued by the administrator reads: “This agreement constitutes the entire agreement between me / us and the adminstrator or the Airline regarding the payment of the amount owed to me /us and I/ we confirm that there are no collateral or supplementary agreements relating to the agreement.

“This agreement automatically cancels any security, which was held against the Airline or encumbrances on its properties and authorises the administrator through the Master of the High Court to immediately cancel any such encumbrances”

However, ATUNAWN said it would go to court to challenge the move.

“We are not happy with the payment modalities of US$1: $1 for our salary arrears during the period 2009 to 2015,” the union said.

“We are challenging that.

“During the period when the arrears were accrued, the economy was using the US dollar.

“Giving us the Zimbabwe dollar is unconstitutional and we are going to challenge that at the High Court.”

The unions are also lobbying for the removal of the administrator, pointing out that he was delaying in the implementation of the December 2020 Supreme Court ruling, among other reasons.

Thornhill High School Pupils Test Positive To Covid-19

By A Correspondent- Three pupils at Thornhill High School in Gweru have tested positive for COVID-19 and all are asymptomatic.

Pupils and teachers are waiting for their results while contact tracing is currently underway.

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education communication and advocacy director, Taungana Ndoro confirmed the COVID-19 outbreak at the school.

He said:

Yes, I can confirm that Thornhill high school in Gweru has been hit by cases of COVID-19. Three pupils tested positive. They are all asymptomatic and contact tracing is ongoing.

Thornhill High School headmaster Solomon Mukora said they are not going to close the school and send all children home.

Mukora said all pupils will be monitored while they continue learning and those who are sick will be treated attending lessons.

Chinese Company Defends Self On Hwange Operations

Statement by Beifa Investments (Pvt) Ltd on its coal exploration activities in the Dinde area in Hwange, Matabeleland North Province.

The directors of Beifa Investments (Pvt) Ltd have noted with great concern and disbelief a series of seriously misleading and highly defamatory publications by certain individuals, media houses and organisations regarding Beifa Investments (Pvt) Ltd’s involvement in the Dinde area of Hwange.

In the articles circulating on print and social media, there are claims that Beifa Investments (Pvt) Ltd is disrespecting the Dinde Community by sinking or drilling holes on the gravesite and that Beifa Investments is proceeding with exploration against the will of the Dinde Community.

Also, in some publications, there are insinuations that the Dinde Community is about to face expulsion from their ancestral homes and their lives are being disrupted by the exploration being conducted by Beifa Investments (Pvt) Ltd.

“Mwonzora Destroying Own Political Career”

Political analysts have warned MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora that his party’s support for controversial amendments to the constitution is a mistake that could destroy his political career because the changes to the supreme law are not popular among the electorate.

The MDC-T voted with ZANU PF in the Senate to pass Constitution Amendment Number 1 in March, which, once signed into law by President Emmerson Mnangagwa, will give the President unfettered powers in the appointment of senior judges.

Eldred Masunungure, a University of Zimbabwe political science lecturer, opined that Mwonzora took a huge gamble in supporting ZANU PF’s mutilation of the constitution that he helped to craft. He said:

It’s very odd and sad for a party that claims to be the main opposition party in Zimbabwe to be supporting an obviously odious amendment to the supreme law of the country particularly because the MDC-T leader was one of the architects of that constitution during the constitution-making process.

The constitution received overwhelming approval during the referendum and this may be politically expedient in terms of crafting engagement with the ruling party for whatever benefit we don’t know, but it is a perilous move from the perspective of the popular will and the electorate.

It is taking a huge gamble, which is not likely to pay off positively during the forthcoming by-elections and 2023 elections.

… The whole thing affects the supremacy of our supreme law, which is our social contract that (Mwonzora) was a leader in crafting.

It is a negative development and I think it will boomerang very badly on him in terms of electoral processes and outcomes.

Harare-based political analyst Alexander Rusero said Mwonzora had been exposed as a ZANU PF project through his push for the constitutional amendments.

South Africa-based political commentator Kefas Mtimande said Mwonzora’s behaviour was that of a politician, who had made his mind to work with ZANU PF. Mtimande said:

I think for him the die is cast and he knows he has no place in the opposition anymore and it is all over for him, hence he is seeking political asylum in ZANU PF.

He now cares less about what people will say and is just making it clearer through his rational disputation narrative, but otherwise, he is no longer an opposition to ZANU PF, but an ally.

Mwonzora has tried to justify his support for the amendments by saying they were protecting the quota for female legislators, but women’s groups have rejected the provisions for affirmative action as useless.-standard

Villagers Impose Own Curfew Following Mysterious Death Of 3 Men

By A Correspondent- Villagers at Bata Farm in Bindura are now living in fear after three bodies were found dumped in their neighbourhood.

One of the villagers stumbled upon the three bodies on 25 April near a dam with their vehicle, a silver Honda CRV parked close by.

The bodies were near a bus stop along the Bindura-Mt Darwin Road and about half a kilometre from Umfurudzi toll gate.

The community has since agreed on a 6 PM curfew in the aftermath of the incident.

Tinashe Kabaira told The Herald that he left home on Sunday at around 4 AM with his cattle drawn scotch cart to water his garden as per his daily routine. He said:

When I reached the dam I saw a man sleeping and I called out but there was no response. I concluded that he was drunk but when I went closer I discovered that he was not breathing.

I immediately went to [Stephen] Chari’s [a member of the neighbourhood watch committee] homestead and we went back to the scene where we discovered two more bodies.

This event has unsettled this whole community. We never expected to witness something this sinister. Pictures of this event continue to haunt us and constantly we are reminded of this through social media.

This dam provides water for gardening, livestock and laundry but after this event people stopped coming to the dam.

Another villager, Mary Chinakidzwa believes the three men were murdered somewhere and the assailants then dumped the bodies near the dam.

She said:

It looks like these three people were not killed at this dam. The bodies were only dumped here. The crime scene was not disturbed and does not indicate a struggle or dragging of bodies.

Chief Mutumba said after the police complete their investigation there is a need to cleanse the area to get rid of avenging spirits that may cause problems in the area.

A suspect was arrested in Dotito, Mashonaland Central, on Thursday in connection with the death of three men.

Reports claim the suspect Isaac Diningo (45), is believed to be a n’anga (traditional healer) whom the deceased had earlier consulted.

He reportedly gave the three men a concoction after the men allegedly consulted him seeking assistance to boost their fledgeling business.

The men are believed to have been carrying huge sums of cash and it is thought the n’anga desired their money and he killed them before dumping the bodies at the farm.

Two of the dead men have been identified as Medio Kashiri (52) and Anthony Ndawana also aged 52.

New Twist To Mugabe’s Zvimba Burial

A fresh war has erupted over the burial  of the late president Robert Mugabe with a Zvimba villager dragging the erstwhile strongman’s widow Grace to a traditional court over the matter.

Mugabe, who died in September 2019 aged 95, was buried at his Kutama homestead in Zvimba after Grace and her children rejected government’s offer to have his remains interred at the National Heroes Acre in Harare.

The Mugabe family said the long-serving ruler made it clear while on his deathbed that he did not want to be buried at the national shrine following a spectacular fallout with his ruling Zanu PF after a military coup that ousted in him in 2017.

Tinos Manovengere is said to have approached Chief Zvimba seeking to have Grace censured amid revelations that some still want his remains reburied in Harare.

According to leaked WhatsApp messages, one of Mugabe’s prominent nephews consulted a Harare-based lawyer on the legal implications of the case now before Chief Zvimba.

The messages said if Grace was found guilty by the traditional court, “corrective measures would be taken to rebury Mugabe”.

Others said Mugabe was an international figure and exhuming his remains would be an embarrassment for the country.

They said  the late Zanu PF leader’s children had the right to decide, warning Chief Zvimba to be cautious.

“If he failed to handle the situation before Mugabe was buried, will he manage that now?” one of them asked.

The lawyer said the court would likely ask the rationale behind  challenging Mugabe’s burial two years after he was laid to rest.

“The modern courts and judges would ask as to why you waited for so long to take action against that burial,” the lawyer advised.

“The world would want to know what Chief Zvimba and the complainant would lose or suffer if Mugabe’s remains buried in Kutama Village.

“The issue of Mugabe’s burial was debated and covered by newspapers until it was finally said he was going to be buried in Kutama. The judges will ask why you didn’t apply for an injunction without delay.”

Mugabe family spokesperson Leo Mugabe said he was not aware of the WhatsApp messages and the case against Grace.

He said the Manovengeres were his uncles but said they had nothing to do with Mugabe’s Karigamombe family.

“I don’t know anything about that. I am learning it from you. If there is something like that, Chief Zvimba should have told me,” he said.

“Social media can mislead. I have never been in any WhatsApp group.”

A Mugabe family member said the chief was yet to set a date for a hearing. He said they suspected a powerful hand was behind the case.

Grace was not available for comment as she is said to be in Singapore.

Chief Zvimba was also not reachable on his mobile phone yesterday. – The Standard

“Monday May 3 A Normal Working Day”: Govt

By A Correspondent- The government has said tomorrow, that is, Monday, 3 May 2021 is not a public holiday but a normal working day.

There has been confusion regarding this year’s Labour Day which fell on a weekend, Saturday, 1 May 2021.

Some people speculated that since the public holiday fell on a weekend, the following Monday would automatically be a holiday. This isn’t true. A Monday can only be a holiday if the public holiday falls on a Sunday, not Saturday.

The Ministry of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage has cleared the air over the issue. It said in a statement:

A lot of enquiries have been made regarding whether tomorrow, 3 May 2021, is a public holiday. This follows the International Labour Day (Workers Day) commemoration which was held yesterday, Saturday 1 May 2021.

Kindly be advised that tomorrow will be a working day. Section 1(i) of the Public Holidays and Prohibition of Business Act [Chapter 10:21] provides that:

“When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the Monday following shall be a public holiday.”

Schools “Introduce” Incentives To Help Solve Teachers’ Incapacitation

By A Correspondent- Some schools in the Matabeleland region are reportedly demanding between US$1 to US$10 from learners per week as incentives for teachers to attend class, despite learners having paid fees in full.

Teachers unions have been urging their members to embark on a two-day teaching week citing incapacitation which resulted in the Government implementing a no work no pay policy for absconding teachers.

Investigations by Sunday News revealed that some teachers at some schools have been demanding incentives from parents of about US$10 for them to teach every day. Some of the teachers have also been demanding money for data for them to be able to conduct online lessons.

One primary school in Bulawayo has seen students being made to pay US$1 per student per week for the data purchases, which is paid direct to the teachers, with those that do not pay barred from the online lessons.

According to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education’s Covid-19 Standard Operating Procedure, a classroom can have not more than 35 learners, meaning in a class of 35 learners, the teacher will be getting US$35 per week for data and a total US$140 a month.

Parents with children learning at another school in the city said this has been happening since last year whereby they pay teachers US$10 per month, to allow pupils to be taught daily.

“We paid school fees and we are now being made to pay extra money for teachers so that they can buy data for online lessons, for them to send notes and assignments. We understand they are incapacitated but how is their situation different from everyone else’s?” said one parent who refused to be named.

Some private schools are also reportedly demanding US$10 per pupil per month while some have pegged their school fees using forex and are not accepting local currency.

A schoool in Matabeleland South is reportedly ordering parents to pay incentives for teachers of US$20 per term as way to encourage teachers to attend class on a daily basis instead of two days per week. Parents in rural schools in the Matabeleland region are also equally affected with the schools also demanding incentives for them to teach.

Investigations show that schools in Maphisa, and Tsholotsho were demanding R50 top teachers.

Contacted for comment, the director of Advocacy and Communication in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Ministry Mr Taungana Ndoro said it was against Government policy to demand incentives for teachers.

He said the ministry will bring such schools to book.

“Government policy is not changing, teachers’ incentives are not allowed and that position has been there since 2014,” said Mr Ndoro..-statemedia

Mvurwi Mbanje Farmer Jailed

By A Correspondent- A 39 year old Mvurwi Cannabis farmer was sentenced to 3 years for cultivating dagga by Guruve resident magistrate Rumbidzai Mugwagwa last week.

Blessing Spada pleaded guilty to the charge.

Prosecutor Albert Charewa told the court that on independence day police received a tip off that the accused was cultivating mbanje and went on to search his house where they found 990 grams of cannabis.

He also led the police to his garden where he uprooted 44 plants of the drug.

In another case a 21-year-old Guruve robber was sentenced to 10 months by magistrate Mugwagwa for robbing a pedestrian of his money and mobile phone.

Mairos Takudzwa Tembo was convicted after his own plea of guilty.

The court heard that Tembo followed Lawrence Muronzi on March 12 around 2100hours on a footpath. He tripped him and when he fell down, the accused robbed him of his wallet and cellphone.

Muronzi reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest Tembo.

Potraz Donates 12 Laptops To Gosha Secondary School

By A Correspondent- Gosha Secondary School in Chikwaka last Tuesday became the biggest beneficiary after the Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Potraz) donated to it 12 laptops, a desktop, multi-purpose printer and 25 book cases.

The parastatal, as part of its corporate social responsibility programme, went beyond just adopting a student at the school to donating the information communication technology (ICT) gadgets that will assist the institution to embrace technological advancement.

Following the publication in the Standard Style of the plight of Vellah Misodzi, who was involved in a near-fatal electrocution accident that cost her an arm and a leg five years ago, Potraz offered to send her back to school.

It paid her tuition, bought her school uniform and an artificial limb that will make it possible for her to walk to school.

Gift Machengete, Potraz director-general, said the donation was timely, having come during a month when the world was celebrating Girls in ICT whose commemorations were on April 22.

“Vellah’s story was a sad one, a story of shattered dreams and lost hope,” Machengete said.

“We wish to turn that around now and make it a story about kindness and hope for a brighter future, as well as a certain and secure tomorrow.

“When we heard of her story, there was no debate that she would become one of our beneficiaries under our community social responsibility programme.

“We thus engaged specialists to assess her needs so that she could return to school and arrangements were made for an artificial limb to be made for her.”

Machengete said the donation of laptops to Gosha Secondary School was meant to encourage especially girls to take up ICT studies and careers as the world was going digital and modern-day existence was hinged on ICTs.

“It will be a world of robotics, artificial intelligence and virtual reality. “That world is already here and students should not be left behind,” he added.

Mashonaland East Provincial Affairs minister Apollonia Munzverengi lauded Potraz for coming to the rescue of both Misodzi and her school.

“Time and again, we are getting encouraging media stories where the parastatal is supporting construction of computer labs at schools.

“They are also setting community information centres and containerised village information centres which are all equitable infrastructures of transforming our communities in line with technological advancement,” said Munzverengi in a speech read on her behalf by Muchemwa Mugwisi, a director in her office.

Mthuli Mocks Civil Servants

By A Correspondent- Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube said Government has refused to pay civil servants in foreign currency and announced a meagre Zimbabwe dollar salary increased equating it with the US dollar.

Mthuli told the state media at the weekend that he had increased civil servants salaries with the least paid now earning about $17 000 translating to US$ 205.

“Government is doing a lot for civil servants. That is about US$205 equivalent in terms of their salaries for the lowest paid civil servants. Inflation is coming down and as it does so and as we continue as Government to push the wages up, which we will, you will find out that the plight of the civil servants will get better and better. We have awarded the civil servants 25 percent salary increment,” he said.

Hebert Shumbamhini, Zanu-PF commissar in the province, told the provincial coordinating committee that Mutinhiri had lured other MDC Alliance officials.

“I am not after any position. I just want us to work together in this new dispensation.”

Villagers Celebrate Zanu PF Terror Group Leader’s Death

By A Correspondent-People in Zaka are celebrating the death of a Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) colonel, Christopher Rufu Mayoyo, who led a murderous terror campaign against MDC supporters in the district during the run-up to the June 2008 run-off election.

Former Zaka West legislator Festus Dumbu told The NewsHawks that it was tragic that Mayoyo died a free man after his terror campaign claimed innocent lives.

“As the people of Zaka, we are not sorry about the death of Mayoyo who caused terror in our area in 2008.

“We lost many people and it is not a secret that Mayoyo was the leader of army officers who were operating here and you even know that these guys were based at Ferry Training Centre and their operations led to the death of many people as well as the displacement of tens of people,” said Dumbu.

Seeing this man dying before facing justice is unfair to us. We have no kind words for his fate and it will take more than three generations of people in our area to forgive even the family which he left behind.

The MDC Alliance councillor for Ward 19 in Zaka, Peter Imbayarwo, told The NewsHawks that it is difficult for the people of Zaka to mourn someone who caused untold suffering in the district.

“Mayoyo was the leader of terror here in the district. The guys were driving Mitsubishi, Mahindra or Cam vehicles without number plates and they addressed several meetings threatening people with death.
All Zanu PF bases reported to Mayoyo. Go and ask people from Zaka, they will tell you that all those who lost their lives were taken from bases by the vehicles which l told yo,” he said.

Government Forces Private Companies To Hire Zupco Buses

By A Correspondent-The government said private companies requiring transportation for their workers can only hire buses registered under the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) franchise.

Local Government and Public Works Minister, July Moyo the state media that the removal of private kombis from the roads will help bring back sanity onto the country’s roads.

Private-owned commuter omnibuses were banned from the roads when the initial national lockdown was introduced on March 30 last year as part of measures to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Last week scores of commuters in Bulawayo were left stranded after police impounded vehicles that were operating in defiance of these regulations.

Company staff buses and vehicles hired to ferry school children that were not registered under Zupco were not spared.

In an interview on the sidelines of the handover and launch of the Local Authorities Database System (LADS) and Ward Profiles for Matabeleland and Midlands provinces in Bulawayo, Minister Moyo said companies should only hire Zupco registered vehicles to ferry their staff.

“Zupco affiliated commuter omnibuses are the only ones allowed to operate, that is the policy in place and it has not changed,” he said.

“Anybody who has their buses and wants to operate must go and register with Zupco.
“This is to ensure that we manage urban companies through one company but with many owners.
“All we are saying is that we want to bring sanity to the whole system.
“Even companies that want to hire buses for their workers should do so through Zupco alone and not hire private companies.”

Minister Moyo said Government and ICT experts at the Harare Institute of Technology had introduced a high-tech system to manage all the Zupco affiliated vehicles.

“It is now easy to monitor all these vehicles.
“Authorities can do this by just using their mobile phones through this system.
“This is what we are pushing for when we talk about effectively managing our vehicles.”

Monday Is Not A Public Holiday, Says Govt

MDC Alliance Mash East Youth Leader Attacked By ZANU PF Thugs Over President Chamisa Wallpaper

02-05-2021

Mashonaland East MDC Alliance Youth Assembly member, George Madziva was attacked by a mob of ZANU PF thugs led by their youth District Coordinating Committee (DCC) Chairman yesterday in Murehwa.

Madziva who is Mashonaland East Youth Secretary for Local Government said he was attacked at the instigation of ZANU PF DCC Youth Chair who confronted him for putting President Nelson Chamisa’s picture as his phone wallpaper.

No US Dollar Salaries For Civil Servants

By A Correspondent- The government has maintained that it will not any time soon be able to pay civil servants in foreign currency despite the dollarisation of the whole economy.

This was revealed by the state media, Sunday when it reported that the government had effected an increment on civil servants salaries that saw the lowest paid worker being paid US$205 equivalent on the interbank exchange rate.

The state propaganda mouthpiece said the Zimbabwe dollar salary reviews were meant to ensure that Government employees will be earning around US$540 equivalent before the end of the year.

Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister, Paul Mavima told the state media that the government will increase civil servants salaries again in June. The offer to increase salaries was made by Government at the beginning of last month.

“The 25 percent salary increment for civil servants was effected in April. So, in June we will do another 45 percent to bring it to 70 percent for this half of the year,” he said.

Byo Police Use Facebook To Track Down Menacing Thieves

A Bulawayo syndicate of thieves, who broke into people’s cars, was arrested after one of them gave away information about his location to detectives through Facebook.

Fayton Zata (27) of Mabuthweni and Thabo Mthombeni (29) from Mpopoma went on a car breaking spree at the Ascot shopping complex last Saturday before they were arrested on Monday.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said the two were using a scissors to break into cars.

“On April 24 at 11pm, the two were spotted at Ascot shopping centre, Bulawayo, by alert security guards tampering with some motor vehicles, which were parked in the parking bays,” Ncube said.

“The security guards observed that the accused persons were committing theft from a motor vehicle and were using a scissors to open the car door as well as smashing windows.”

He said the security guards tried to apprehend the suspects but they escaped, leaving behind their motor vehicle, a red Honda Fit, registration number ACO 9550 at the scene.

Ncube said the abandoned motor vehicle was searched  and a national identity card, a driver’s licence belonging to Zata, a pair of scissors and a set of number plates AES 4028 were recovered.

He said investigations showed that the number plates that were fitted on the abandoned Honda Fit (ACO 9550) belonged to a Mercedes benz ML 270.

The number plates were stolen on April 20 from a Benz vehicle parked at the Cold Storage Commission premises in Belmont.

Ncube said police searched for Zata’s profile on Facebook using the recovered identity documents and managed to communicate with him.

He eventually disclosed his address, leading to his arrest.

He said Zata admitted that he committed the offence and implicated Mthombeni together with three others identified as Bhekani, Geribee and Farai, whom he said were still at large.

Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League To Kick Off On 17 July

The 2021 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season is set to kick off on the 17th of July following resolutions made during the top flight’s annual General meeting held in Harare this Friday.

The domestic league season will kick off weeks after the conclusion of the season’s opening cup competition which gets underway in May.

Speaking to ZBC News PSL Chairperson Farai Jere said the Cup competition will be the dress rehearsal for the league season with all Covid-19 safety measures undergoing a test run.

This will be a proper league, we have been forced by the situation to have it in July but the season hasn’t changed because this needs a constitution, and our league will have promotion and relegation so this will help ZIFA when they are crafting their letter to SRC for the resumption of football because that’s where the lower divisions come in,he noted.

The PSL assembly also reached an agreement with ZIFA lawyers on the burning issue of contracts.

The lawyers clarified what is a contract and also highlighted that if the agree service was not rendered then compensation has to be paid if a player wants to leave and this was made clear by the lawyers who also agreed with the ZIFA interpretation, explained Jere.

The Premier Soccer League also indicated that they have secured a sponsor for both the league and Cup competition, to be unveiled in a week’s time.

16 Years In Jail For Beatrice Woman Who Raped Her 3 Children

A 45-year-old Beatrice woman has been sentenced to an effective 16 years in prison for raping her three sons for a month in April last year.

The woman, who was facing three counts of rape charges, was convicted after a full trial by Chitungwiza regional magistrate Mr Noel Mupeiwa.

Mr Mupeiwa noted that the woman was mentally stable and castigated her behaviour that eventually led her sons to become sexually active and abused a neighbour’s daughter.

The State represented by Ms Trinity Mandebvu proved that the convicted woman raped his three sons, one aged six and twins aged 8.

In the first count, the woman’s 6-year-old son on unknown dates in April last year, and his two elder brothers were staying with the mother.

Initially, the boys would sleep on the floor while the mother slept on the bed but later, the mother asked her three sons to join her on the bed.

She is said to have told them that she wanted to teach them how to have sexual intercourse.

The mother instructed the youngest son to remove his clothes and had sex with him. This occurred on several occasions in the presence of his elder brothers, the court heard.

Ms Mandebvu further told the court that the mother threatened the complainant that she would not give him food if he ever disclosed the abuse to anyone.

The second and third counts happened in similar fashion when the mother was raping her twin sons during the same period.

However, the mother left the complainants alone and directed them never to disclose the matter to anyone, otherwise she would abandon them and would not give them food.

The children were then taken in by their step grandmother.

The matter came to light after a neighbour’s daughter was sexually abused and the step grandmother quizzed them on where they had learnt that and they spilled the beans.

A report was then made to the police leading to the arrest of the mother.

Chamisa Tells Employers To Pay Workers In United States Dollars

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa yesterday said employers must pay their workers in United States dollars, saying they deserve a decent wage.

In a message to commemorate Workers Day, Chamisa weighed in on the raging debate over payment of salaries in the local currency at a time most goods and services are priced in foreign currency.

“Give workers’ salaries in US dollars,” the MDC Alliance leader tweeted.

“Saluting the labour that built up this land and those who work to make Zimbabwe a great country.

“Without labour nothing flourishes. “We join workers of Zimbabwe to fight for political, economic and social justice. “Workers deserve a decent wage.”

In his Workers Day message,  President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the condition of workers in Zimbabwe had improved under his presidency.

“Zimbabwe at 41 is much better than Zimbabwe at 37 before the second republic,” Mnangagwa said.

“The gloomy picture of 2017 has been replaced by a genuine sense of optimism that conditions are now in place for our country to fulfil its potential and for our people to thrive.

“We use this day to galvanise Zimbabwean workers for greater unity towards the achievement of the great task set out in the national development strategy and towards achieving vision 2030.

“None but ourselves bear the burden to grow and prosper our motherland.

“We are our own keepers and force for our own development.

“Your sacrifice and continued endurance has kept the wheels of Zimbabwe’s economy turning.

“The priority remains that of protecting and serving the needs of workers and their families.”

Mnangagwa took over from the late Robert Mugabe following a military coup in 2017.

Prior to that, he was a permanent feature in Mugabe’s Cabinet since 1980.

Civil servants, who are ironically demanding salaries in United States dollars as per October 2018, reacted angrily to Mnangagwa’s claims that their situation had improved.

“We are not sharing the aura of optimism because we are in a very dark moment because of incapacitation,” the Zimbabwe Confederation of Public Sector Trade Unions (formerly Apex Council) general-secretary David Dzatsunga said.

“The whole reaction by the government to then evoke the no-work no-pay principle will put us in a very invidious place that makes us angry to say we have gone to our employer to tell him that we are incapacitated, we are suffering and instead of capacitating us reacts by the no-work no-pay principle.

“We never said we don’t want to come to work.

“We want to come to work every day even on weekends if what they are paying us is adequate. We are yet to get this optimism.”

The Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe said workers in Zimbabwe were under siege and all must unite and face “the enemy”.

“The worker in Zimbabwe is under siege, and Happy Workers’ Day sounds like a ritual,” PTUZ said in a statement.

“Nevertheless, we say Happy Workers’ Day to all Zimbabwean workers. Unite and face the enemy.”

The Zimbabwe Teachers Association said: “It is May Day, a day that we ordinarily celebrate and chronicle the achievements of the workers.

“We are supposed to celebrate all the way and to plan ahead as motivated workers of this country, but it’s all in the past. It’s a black May Day for us.”

Zimbabwe is plagued by high unemployment, which observers said stretches to over 90% with many relying on the informal sector for survival.

Zanu PF, Council Officials Fight Sikhala Over Community Market Place Project

PARLIAMENT says it will intervene in a matter in which Zengeza West legislator Job Sikhala (MDC Alliance) is accusing Zanu PF supporters and Chitungwiza Town Council officials of attempting to stop construction of a community marketplace in his constituency.

Sikhala, the MDC Alliance deputy national chairperson, wrote to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Jacob Mudenda last month asking him to rein in ruling Zanu PF party supporters he alleged were stalling the project, which is funded by government through the Constituency Development Fund.

In response, Clerk of Parliament Kennedy Chokuda said the legislative body would engage the relevant authorities so that the project resumes without further delay.

In a letter dated April 21, 2021 written to Sikhala and seen by NewsDay, Chokuda said: “Parliament takes note of the efforts that you made in having the project approved by the relevant authorities and commencement of the project thereof.

“It is, therefore, regretted that the project has stalled as a result of the directive from Chitungwiza Town Council to halt construction.”

He added: “We take note of the fact that you have taken the matter to the courts to seek redress. In our view, the longer the matter stays in the courts, the longer it will take for Zengeza West constituency to benefit from this project. In that respect, Parliament proposes to engage the relevant authorities for dialogue to be given a chance in resolving the matter.”

Chitungwiza Town Council issued a prohibition and enforcement order stopping Sikhala from developing the market despite that the project has approved plans and land was allocated for its construction.

Sikhala then approached the High Court challenging the prohibition and enforcement order and won the matter.

However, the council appealed to the Supreme Court.

Mnangagwa Sucked In Marry-Chiwenga Break-up

By Jane Mlambo| Estranged wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, Marry Mubaiwa has revealed damning details on the involvement of President Emmerson Mnangagwa in her separation with the retired Army General.

In an interview with a local publication, Marry said Mnangagwa is the one who called her to announce that only six people were allowed to go to China with Chiwenga while reading out names which excluded her.

She said the phone call only came when everything had been planned, suggesting Mnangagwa was only used to break the news to her or was in connivance with his deputy.

“The President called me a few hours before my husband was set to leave for China and said President Xi (Chinese President Xi Jinping) had suggested that my husband gets medical attention in China and that 12 professors were waiting to attend to him. He however said only six people should come, including him, his doctor, the assistant nurse and the security team. I even asked why I was not included, and the President said I would go at a later time as President Xi had suggested that my husband should come and get attended to before I can join him,” Marry said.

She added that though she had a diplomatic passport which doesn’t require a visa to travel, Mnangagwa told her she could not go as those on the list had already secured visas.

“I insisted that I needed to go, but I was told the plane was already waiting and those that required visas had them already. So I guess it had been planned for some time, but I had just not been told. I however did not require a visa because I had a diplomatic passport,” said Marry.

Was Mnangagwa complicit in the break-up of Chiwenga and his wife Marry?

Non Governmental Organization Donates Sanitary Pads To Female Prisoners

Glamour Boys Forgive Muzadzi

Man Snatches Best Friend’s Wife …

Susan Mutami Dated 4 High Profile Men In Less Than A Year And Got Impregnated By 2

By Showbiz Reporter | The Norton MP Temba Mliswa’s ex girlfriend, Susan Mutami who is in a bitter split with her former lover (of whom she claims pregnancy), last year dated at least four different men who include the Foreign Affairs Minister SB Moyo, one after the other:

Susan Mutami’s latest profile picture – source: Susan Mutami, Twitter.com

Polite Kambamura, the Mining Deputy Minister (they were engaged). Walter Chikwana, Secretary for the Judicial Commission (they had a civil partnership in 2020), and ZANU PF MP, Hon Kenneth Musanhi (see pictures).

Furthermore, an affidavit seen by ZimEye states in addition that she was already pregnant way before bedding Mliswa last year.

The affidavit, certified by the Judicial Services Commission, shows by end of March 2020, she was still engaged to another man, who works inside the JSC, Mr Walter Chikwana. The man was reached for a comment Tuesday but wouldn’t speak or respond to the matter.

Meanwhile, the affidavit states that Mutami was carrying a pregnancy to another man at the end of March 2020. In the affidavit, her boyfriend, Mr Chikwana says:

‘ I am Susan Vivian Mutami’s partner and in case of emergency I can be contacted on the above mentioned address or on my mobile number, +263772***********”

He then goes on to say he is the legal guardian of SB Moyo’s Child (full name redacted-in accordance with the Children’s Act on the paper).

” I am also the legal guardian of (name withheld), and our unborn child as of date. Attached hereto is a copy of my identification.”

The affidavit was signed on the 24th March 2020.

Affidavit

The development puts burden on Mutami to explain the timing drama surrounding her two pregnancies (to different men) which are within months of each other.

Efforts to get a comment from Mutami were fruitless at the time of writing as she repeatedly put down the phone, while only giving interviews to the Newsday publication which carries a story making false claims that she is the holder of two Australian degrees of which she has none, and also makes false claims that she is the winner of Australia’s CEO awards.

Meanwhile, her ex lover, Mliswa has maintained his allegations that he was set up by the Central Intelligence Organisation in order to incriminate him using Susan Mutami.

Already A Mother At 15

Catherine Muponda…

State Media – At 15, Catherine Muponda was already a mother and living with a husband who was twice her age.

The marriage was unbearable; the man was abusive. She hated herself and the life she was living. On many occasions, she even contemplated suicide.

“I was only 15-years-old and I was in love with a man who was 30 and stayed in Harare while I stayed here in Madziwa,” Catherine said, recounting her ordeal to The Sunday Mail.

“He was more experienced and I guess that is how he took advantage of me. “When I got pregnant, he refused to take responsibility and my parents chased me away from home.”

She then relocated to Harare to stay with her sister, but life in the big city was proving unbearable on account of poverty. It was then that she met another man, aged 34, who said he was willing to take care of her and her young daughter.

Catherine had fallen into the maze of child marriage, which accounts for hundreds of young Zimbabwean girls every year.

“I was desperate, so I accepted the offer despite the fact that he was not the father of my child. Little did I know that I was jumping from the frying pan into the fire.

“A few months after moving in with him, he became abusive and would beat me up for no reason. He was verbally abusive, called me hurtful names. During all the time I lived with him, he never gave me money even to buy a loaf of bread.”

After two years, Catherine decided to walk away from the marriage before asking for forgiveness from her parents who took her back in.

It was then that she decided to resuscitate her long held dream of completing her studies. Fortunately for her, she had already passed her Ordinary Levels with flying colours.

She immediately registered for A-Level studies in 2019. Seven years after plunging into misfortune and in the process abandoning her dream of becoming a lawyer, Catherine finally completed her basic education last year.

Last week, she was among the thousands of 2020 A-Level candidates who collected their exam results. Astonishingly, Catherine aced the examination, scoring 15 points. Now she is preparing to enrol with a local university to study for a law degree.

She has secured funding from the Rozaria Memorial Trust, which provides financial and physiological assistance to child brides who opt to go back to school. “It was not easy going back to school. Society does not forgive and forget easily.

“The community labels you a bad apple and that can potentially harm you. Oftentimes, you are treated as an outcast.

“You are called names which are meant to humiliate and bring you down and you are always reminded of your past mistakes. “As a result you are never really free to express yourself.”

Catherine said there were times she contemplated quitting because of the pressure and stereotyping. Luckily, she received a lot of counselling, which helped her through the tough times.

The Covid-19 pandemic and its attendant lockdowns, however, emerged and threatened her dream. She said there was little in-class learning during her final year and she had to go beyond the normal in order to continue learning.

“We had to walk long distances in search of tutors who were willing to teach for free or for very little money which my classmates and I could afford.”

Powered by extraordinary determination, Catherine vowed to use her second chance to change her life in spite of the challenges. “Because of the ordeal I went through at the hands of abusive men, I want to be a lawyer,” she said.

“I want to use that to help defend and uplift women and girls who are going through what I went through.”

Just like Catherine, Samantha Chidodo (22) of Shamva returned from an abusive marriage to continue with her studies.

“At 17, I fell pregnant and moved in with my boyfriend who was aged 21 at the time,” said Samantha. “A few months into the marriage, I realised that I had taken a wrong turn.

“I went back home, luckily my parents took me back in. I later went back for my A’ Level studies with assistance from Rozaria Trust. “I was grateful for the second chance and swore to use it wisely.”

Samantha scored 12 points in last year’s exams. Rozaria Memorial Trust chief executive, Dr Nyaradzayi Gumbonzvanda, said she was proud of the girls being supported by her trust.

“We are very proud of the girls, it was not an easy road but they pulled through,” said Dr Gumbonzvanda. “Our organisation will continue assisting young women in such predicaments.”

In many developing countries including Zimbabwe, most cases of child marriages are attributed to poverty, gender discrimination, lack of education and peer pressure among others.

A recent report by the Ministry of Women’s Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development indicated that nearly 5 000 girls of school going age had fallen pregnant during the Covid-19 induced national lockdown.

Government has pledged to eliminate the menace by 2030 in line with Goal number 5.3 under the Sustainable Development Goals. -Sunday Mail

Workers Deserve Decent Wages

Tinashe Sambiri|The MDC Alliance has challenged the Zanu PF regime to pay workers decent wages.

In it’s May Day statement, the MDC Alliance accused the Zanu PF regime of abusing workers as the majority are earning meagre wages.

Read statement below:

MAY DAY ADDRESS FROM THE MDC ALLIANCE LABOUR AND SOCIAL SECURITY PORTFOLIO.

Comrades and friends ,Ladies and Gentleman we kindly appreciate and salute you on this very important day,a day to recognise and appreciate the hard work and resilience workers have shown under a terrible pandemic and work related difficulties that they face at the workplace and in Zimbabwe a rogue govt that has incessantly violated worker rights with impunity.

A gvt that has been on the ILO agenda for worker violation of rights for more than 10 years,a gvt that has been compared with countries like Sudan and Burma when it comes to worker rights violations.

This year’s May Day is unique because we are celebrating it under a pandemic ,with workers working under the Corona pandemic
,with those that still have jobs working with:
-inadequate personal protection equipment(PPE)
-inadequate medical cover
-poor salaries with inflation eroding their meagre salaries everyday
-policy inconsistencies from gvt on the economy
-with worker rights being violated every day and workers being refused the right to express themselves through demonstrations and strikes.

We are celebrating Workers Day when corruption and mismanagement of resources is the order of the day, with unemployment standing at around 98% and no effort being made to address the situation. We celebrate this day when the court where issues that affect the economy and issues that affect the workers theTNF is in limbo and nothing of benefit coming out of that forum.

We celebrate when our roads and highways are full of potholes. We celebrate when our dear civil servants are reeling under poor RTGs wages and salaries. We celebrate when in particular our frontline workers teachers and nurses are terribly underpaid .

We aptly endorse the theme for this year’s May Day by the ZCTU which calls for the fight for political, economic and social justice.
