Daggers Drawn Within MDC T Over Presidency Post

By A Correspondent- Interim MDC T president Dr Thokozani Khupe cancelled the party’s extra ordinary congress citing rigging revealing that she was in the process of approaching the courts for reprieve.

In an exclusive interview with ZimEye, Khupe said she had nullified the congress held Sunday adding that she had sacked the party’s interim secretary general Douglas Mwonzora for bringing the party into disrepute.

Said Khupe:

“I cancelled that extra ordinary congress and i suspended Douglas Mwonzora. Whatever he says must be disreagrded. We cannot allow people to behave the way they behave. We are a democratic party. we cannot watch people rig elections in broad daylight and let them get away with it .

We were phsyically surrounded. They were surrounding us and beating us up. They were beating us up throwing things at us and some of us were physically assaulted. Some of our guys went to the police and i hear they have been assisted. We tried to hold the congress on time and according to the high court rulling but this is beyond our control. We will approach the courts.”

Govt Delays Paying Commuter Operators Contracted By ZUPCO

By A Correspondent- Kombi operators contracted by ZUPCO to ferry passengers countrywide under President Mnangagwa’s cheap urban transportation scheme have not been paid by the parastatal since 14 November.

The matter was revealed to the publication by the Greater Harare Commuter Omnibus Association secretary-general, Ngonidzashe Katsvairo who said the operators went for Christmas empty-handed:

The payment backlog is now one month.  We are paid every two weeks so that in turn we also pay our workers and service the vehicles. There is now a salary backlog and our vehicles have not been serviced, which will compromise the safety of passengers as both the driver and the vehicle will not be fit for the road mentally and physically.

Passenger transport is our livelihood so we will soldier on, but with the status quo we will be putting lives of passengers at risk. We will continue to engage the government for early and adequate payments. They are failing to pay but we are alleviating transport challenges in the country.

We have requested the government to recognise associations so that they can self-regulate and monitor errant operators just as professional associations do, such as those of lawyers, accountants, estate agents and others. There will be order.

According to the publication the operators staged a demonstration at the parastatal’s headquarters on Christmas eve demanding their money. Kombi operators under the franchise are supposed to get $4 000 per day.

ZUPCO did not comment on the report.

THE CLUE IS IN THABANI MPOFU’S PHONECALL

By Mari Matutu | The much awaited EOC drama came and is past. The issue is not about what happened yesterday because from onset it is a non event. The SC long time took judiciary notice of Chamisa election.

The issue is about how each one of us as Zimbabweans would treat this drama. If you have not learnt the art of deception you will always be cheated by the same trick. Right from the time people started to sympathise with ED during the time Grace was undressing him. He gathered sympathisers till we all marched in streets to help him. He built a ladder out of us.
Today the whole drama at HIIC must be treated by any person with sound mind the same. Do not be fooled. Its Mai Rwizi and Mukadota drama.
When zanu realised that their game of splitting MDC has failed they wanted a safe exit from the drama. One which people will clap hands for. Zanu had issues to cover and close up on the scene and then create another theme that may drag us to 2023 watching the stage.
When Khupe called for help from the head office she actually got it. It was going to be difficult of many to believe that Khupe is acting on behalf of the regime.
Here is the story.
Thokozani Khupe was elected President of MDC T in March 2019. Before that there was no party by the name MDC T that had held a Congress and elected a complete set of leadership. When she contested 2018 election she was a substantive president of a party that is totally different to MDC in Court. This had no T in front of it.
Zanu knows this and the SC has evidence of this on record. They knew no matter what the whole Congress will not yield a legitimate president.
Zanu also knows that the SC actually took judiciary notice of Chamisa election as MDC president at a congress.
Their effort to get people support failed. Actually zanu lost big time in that all their informers and Pawnees are one side. They are now left without informers in MDC and they cannot infiltrate easy enough.
The total number of people that voted in the congress whether we say they are all legit is far less than a half of required majority. One has to give an explanation as to why it so happened.
If Khupe and Komichi can complain that the voter’s roll was manipulated, then who invited people to the congress? Is it not correct that the constitution requires a notice to be given direct to individual members entitled to attend?
Zanu has used this confusion to deprive MDC A of its allocation of political funding and it has been working well. Now if the EOC is to end well without issues then it will be trashed easily.
This is when we hear Khupe asking for help from the HQ. You cannot see that actually Khupe asked for help and she got it. There is now a dispute from this drama.
Some have started to sympathise with Khupe that she was assaulted and called names. On the other hand Mwonzora is said to have been elected president. Look at what people are saying to Mwonzora. This is what is called art of deception. Fooling the same people all the time. Its all drama and all of you are participating in it.
These candidates were recently given millions of dollars by the regime to act this drama. There is no way they can separate. Khupe is illegally in parliament on the seat of MDC A yet she is MDC T. Mwonzora , Komichi and Mudzuri are senators on MDC A ticket yet they are now claiming to be MDC A. Its all under control. They are all controlled from above. Now Khupe says she has suspended Mwonzora.
Do not be dragged into the legality of it. You will be helping their drama.
A non event remains a non event. This is what we must all see it as. Never look for a good or bad. The whole thing is a performance. The professional actors were sent from Mashonganyika building.

Lampard Slams “Lazy” Chelsea Players

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was not happy with his players after the defeat to Arsenal, describing their performance as ‘lazy.’

An Alexandre Lacazette first half penalty and goals from Granit Xhaka and Bukayo Saka ensured that a somewhat second string Arsenal side collected maximum points and bragging rights in the London derby, as well as their first league since November 1.

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Lampard did not hide his disappointment with his charges.

“It was an opportunity to go second against a team that are having a tough time,” he said.

“You either make it difficult for them or you give them a little opening and we did that from minute one and continued for 45 minutes. It was lazy to give away a penalty and lazy to give away a free kick that he (Xhaka) puts in the top corner.”

“We fought … but in the first half we gave ourselves too much to do… I’ll take responsibility on the outside but the players also have to take responsibility,” added the former midfielder.

Celebrating Life @ 40

Celebrating Life @ 40

By Happymore Chidziva

On this day 27 December 1980 ,40 years ago I was born into a family of love and care, a good foundation of life values and skills were imparted in me growing up, to be a selfless fighter of the National Democratic Revolution.

It has been a thrilling journey full of trials and tribulations, disappointments and exciting moments.

From humble beginnings, I have met and worked with great friends, leaders and comrades who have been instrumental and helped me in many different ways in these past four decades.

I am humbled to have all of you and say thank you for the support and being there for me, making these forty years meaningful and productive.

As I celebrate another year added to my life, I look back at the long journey from the bush to the podium.

Fighting in the trenches for a democratic Zimbabwe, early in my youth as an mere activist, up to the vote of confidence by the people of Highfield West to represent them in Parliament.

The support, solidarity and confidence in me through out my activism and leadership shown by the MDC family, President Nelson Chamisa and broader Democratic movement keeps me going.

I still dream and remain committed to a nation of love and happiness, a nation of equal opportunities, free from corruption, tolerant of divergent political views, respect the rule of law and people’s choices. Together we shall continue to take Zanu PF head on and deliver a New Zimbabwe.

To my family, thank you so much for all the support, love and care.

Most importantly, all the praise goes to the almighty God for giving me a lifetime worth living and hoping for more years.

Zimbabwean Prophet Goes Into Hiding After Altercation With “Satanists”

Tinashe Sambiri|
The leaders of the Satanic Church in South Africa have reportedly written a letter to controversial Zimbabwean preacher Isaac Makomichi asking him to join them.

Makomichi’s personal assistant claimed the prophet received an email requesting him to to join the Satanic church or they will destroy him if he fails to do so.

He further claimed that the letter was signed by one Junior Norton.

He also said the church was about to make a police report.

Makomichi was not immediately available for a comment on the matter.

Sources claim he has since fled to Ghana via South Africa to seek spiritual protection.

“Makomichi has gone to Ghana to seek protection. What I know is he currently is not in Zimbabwe,” said one church leader.

LIVE: Will Mwonzora Survive Police Arrest Today Following The Violence Against Khupe Last Night?

If Khupe was in the US she would have begun ruling the nation for another 4 years, literally!

By A Correspondent | There was drama yesterday when the Acting MDC President Thokozani Khupe successfully played a Donald-Trump against her nemesis Douglas Mwonzora. Ballot Fraud, Ballot Fraud was her outcry all morning into the afternoon

.

Later on, in what is certain to discredit the just ended MDC -T congress, the winner MDC Senator Douglas Mwonzora rushed to thank the election management board instead of the voters who ‘chose him’ for leadership.

The development comes barely 4 hours after his nemesis Thokozani Khupe had declared that she has suspended Mwonzora.

While Mwonzora commenting, told ZimEye.com, Khupe does not have any powers to suspend him, top legal experts stated the opposite. Adv Thabani Mpofu pulled out section 9.1.2.3 which categorically states that: The President shall supervise all office bearers in the national leadership structures and may suspend, on reasonable grounds for breach of Party’s Constitution, rules and regulations, any member of the National Standing Committee.

“National Executive Committee. National Council pending investigations and disciplinary action: provided that after suspension of the member as aforesaid the President shall duly report to the National Executive Committee.”

Mwonzora was announced winner with over 883 votes with Khupe trailing behind with a paltry 118.

Speaking shortly after being announced the winner, Mwonzora literally opened his speech by thanking the election management board that handled the Congress for electing him, while omitting in his introduction the people who did the voting. He said, “the Chairperson of The Independent Election Management Board Mr Masvingo and your team, I would like to thank you FOR ELECTING ME, the substantive president to replace the irreplaceable Morgan Richard Tsvangirai”

DO YOU THINK IT WAS AN ERROR?

It could not be established at the time of writing if the statement was a result of a slip of the tongue or it was part of his prepared speech.

SPEECH ROLL (jumbled transcript)

A special tribute to my late predecessor Dr Morgan Richard Tsvangirai ….

The chairperson of The Independent election management board Mr Masvingo and your team, I would like to thank you for electing me the Substantive President to replace the irreplaceable Morgan Richard Tsvangirai.

try as we may we must appreciate that…

I will endeavour to do my best because I have learnt from him he was indeed the very best. A special tribute to my contestants Dr Thokozani Khupe, Elias Mudzuri ….

this was a contest it was not a fight it was a contest from members of one family…. I also understand the frustrations that come from a protracted campaign. I also understand the anxieties that accompany … And therefore I do understand the emotions that accompany and therefore I hope that when everyone has sobered up we will come back together as one family.

I want to say that the three leaders apart of my leadership plan; I have tremendous respect for doctor Thoko Khupe…

she did a lot of good work for this party and we must never forget that. I also want to have a special tribute to engineer Elias Mudzuri…. He was our organising secretary when we handed zanu-pf defeat in 2008.

….

I want to fake and pay tribute to senator Morgan Komichi…

he is also brave and I think that he will still be valuable to this party I want to appeal to those who were supporting me to conquer with love…. you must know that this is a conquest the fact that we were in the same meal the fact that we succeeded over others does not make us any better MDC members than others.

I also want to appeal to those who were supporting the candidates who today did not succeed that this is not the end of the world you have tremendous responsibilities to discharge to the party you have tremendous duties to perform and you have right enshrined in the Constitution of our party….

this is the time to start a new politics to our party and Country we must get rid of the politics of hate the politics of violence the politics of hunger the politics of acrimony and replace with the policies of racial disputation and tolerance. It is the right time that are party stop the politics of mudslinging…

people hate people because they contested against them well today I want to break that jinx. I love those who contested against me…

….

the first fundamental is that for you to get a leadership position be it the president down to the branch chairman you must be elected.

….

Although you are president although you are secretary or there you are charming we must always have collective decision… We are going to have collective decisions.

LIVE: Will Mwonzora Survive Chikurubi-Imprisonment Today Following Violence Against Khupe Last Night?

Thokozani Khupe stood against Morgan Tsvangirai and conuered, she stood against Nelson Chamisa and frustrated the largest political party in Zimbabwean history, after being assaulted in front of cameras last night, will she let Douglas Mwonzora off without a fight?

Let’s Embrace Constructive Criticism- MDC Alliance Official

Tinashe Sambiri|MDC Alliance official, Grademan Mbira, has implored party members to embrace constructive criticism.

This follows articles written by prominent journalist Hopewell Chin’ono pointing out the strengths and weaknesses of the popular movement.

As a councillor and a public official, I am very happy with the feedback from Hopewell “Daddy Hope” Chin’ono.

True democrats must be able to easily embrace positive criticism. Constructive criticism is when we are given feedback from others on how we can improve our programmes.

Daddy Hope has challenged me to work towards building the best possible institution which thrives for the betterment of people’s lives. I have to listen to advice from others which, I believe, will benefit individuals, institutions and societies.

It is not our culture to attack those who criticise us, we rather must be empathetic to them. There’s always something to learn from their comments.

Thanx for the feedback Daddy Hope, I salute you,”said Mbira in a statement.

N_aked Vendor Nabbed While Attempting To Rape Minor

By A Correspondent- A naked vendor has been arrested after he was caught in the process of trying to rape a 14-year-old teenager in a bushy area.

The minor cannot be named for ethical reasons.

According to a source the minor left home on Monday and went to Renkini bus terminus intending to travel to Nkayi.

She arrived at Renkini at around 12PM after the buses had departed.

The source close to investigations said:

“As Bhekimpilo Moyo (27) was moving around selling his wares at the terminus, he met the 14-year-old minor, sitting in a shade. The minor told him that she wanted to travel to Nkayi, but she had no money and when she arrived the buses had already departed. Due to that she was stranded.”

Moyo, the source said, offered to help her and the teenager fell for the bait.

“He promised to give her a place to sleep and bus fare to travel to her rural area the next day. The minor waited for him until 06:30PM and they left, intending to go to his home in Emganwini suburb,” said the source.

According to the source, at around 7PM, a security guard spotted Moyo and the 14-year-old minor walking along a foot path which passes behind a church near Ross Camp.

The security guard followed them.

“Moyo led the minor into a bushy area which is near the church and when they reached an area with long grass they stopped. Moyo removed his jacket and laid it on the ground, he then removed his trousers and underwear and ordered the minor to lie on the ground facing upwards.

He removed her panty, but when he was about to rape her the security guard emerged from the bush and tried to grab him but missed him,” said the source.

Moyo, the source said, picked up his trousers and underwear and took to his heels. The security guard gave chase and caught up with him.

“He hand-cuffed him and took him to Mzilikazi police station. The minor made a report at the police station, stating that Moyo forced her to go to the bush with him to have sex in exchange for bus fare and a place to sleep,” said the source.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident:

“We arrested a man who tried to rape a minor. We would like to thank the security guard who helped in arresting the accused. We would also like to urge members of the public to be on high alert for people who might take advantage of them when they are faced with a problem.”-statemedia

Man Tells Wife To Go And Trade Her Body And Generate Money For The Children’s Upkeep

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo man from Bellevue suburb has been dragged to court for physically abusing his wife and telling her to go back to South Africa, her country of birth, and sell her “buttocks” to generate money for the upkeep of their children.

Lettie Nkomo, who has been married to Menias Nkomo since 2010 has been left with no choice but to turn to the courts to help her find peace in her marriage as her husband has ignored a protection order which barred him from physically, verbally and emotionally abusing Lettie and has continued being abusive.

Lettie said: “He insulted me saying I’m a useless, stupid woman who does not know anything and told me to return to my parents together with my children.

“My husband always shouts at me thereby violating the Protection order which was granted in my favour on 20 November 2020,”she told the court.

Lettie also revealed that her hubby has since chucked her out of their matrimonial bedroom.

“He chucked me out of our bedroom, I now sleep with our children in their spare bedroom. He always tells me to return to South Africa with the kids,” she said.

She reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of her hubby.

Menias appeared before magistrate Amanda Ndlovu at the Tredgold magistrates’ court. He was facing a physical abuse charge.

He denied the charge.

He was remanded in custody to 04 January 2021 for commencement of trial.

ZRP Cop To Pay $ 150 000 For Assaulting Teenager

A MUTARE magistrate has ordered a detective and the police to pay $151 000 compensation to a 15-year-old Sakubva teenager who was brutally assaulted by the former in 2019 during investigations over a stolen cellphone.

The minor’s parents sued ZRP for inhuman and degrading treatment after the teenager was handcuffed and assaulted by Detective Assistant Inspector Jefinias Mazambani. Mutare magistrate, Mr Lazarus Murendo, presided over the case and on November 25 handed down his judgment in favour of the teenager.

As a result of the assault, the teenager bled profusely. He was later released from police custody without being charged.

It was alleged that despite being released from custody without any charges pressed against him, Mazambani made impromptu visits to the juvenile’s Sakubva residence and continued assaulting him.

He sustained injuries which include a perforated eardrum, facial swelling and swelling on his knees.

In his judgment, Mr Murendo said the assault was severe and he suffered excruciating pain, hence he should be paid damages amounting to $151 191 as compensation.

“The second and third defendants (Commissioner-General of the Police and the Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage) are being sued in their official capacities as the employers of the first defendant (Mazambani) and as such, are deemed to be vicariously liable for the conduct of the first defendant committed during the course and scope of his employment.

“While the first defendant denied any wrong-doing, the evidence on record and his criminal conviction and sentence conclusively lead to the only reasonable conclusion that he indeed assaulted the plaintiff severely leading to serious injuries being inflicted,” he said.-Manica Post

Fired Employee Leaves Boss Toothless After Hitting Him With A Stone

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo police officer who runs a pool table business at Pumula North high density suburb shops lost four teeth after he was hit on the mouth with a rock by his employee for terminating his contract.

Albert Matangaidze not only deprived his boss, Constable Luke Mafunda, of his teeth, but he stabbed him in the stomach, for firing him.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident: “I can confirm that we arrested Albert Matangaidze for assaulting and stabbing Luke Mafunda. We urge members of the public to desist from engaging in any act of violence.”

Clifford Phiri who witnessed the incident unfold on Monday at around 09:30PM said Mafunda fired Matangaidze and hired another man and this did not go down well with Matangaidze.

“Matangaidze was visibly drunk as he confronted his boss accusing him of terminating his contract without informing him or stating the reasons which led him to do so. Mafunda told him that he felt he was doing him a disservice as he was not managing his snooker well resulting in him making losses,” said Phiri.

It seems that stoked Matangaidze’s anger as he broke a beer bottle and used it as a weapon on Mafunda.

“He charged at Mafunda, saying you can’t do this to me and stabbed him in the stomach. Mafunda fell on the ground. While he was writhing in agony on the ground, Matangaidze reached for a rock and hit him several times on the head and mouth causing him to lose four teeth,” said Phiri.

A source close to investigations said Mafunda was rushed to hospital for treatment.

Matangaidze was reported to the police leading to his arrest.

Police Officer Loses 4 Teeth Over Terminating Employee’s Contract

Man Marries Off Married Daughter To “Financially Stable” Suitor

By A Correspondent- This advice comes after a man from Zaka in Masvingo province stirred a scandal when he allegedly “married off” his married daughter to another man, claiming her first husband was not financially suited to be an in-law.

Hove and Ruramai have two children together aged two and five.

It is reported that sometime in September this year, Ruramai who was staying with her husband in Mberengwa left him under the pretext that she was visiting her parents in Zaka while in fact she was eloping with Magwaro to his rural home in Mushinyi Village in Bikita.

Following a tip-off from neighbours that his wife had eloped with Magwaro to his rural home he reportedly followed them.

His complaint which B-Metro is in possession of reads:

“Davison Magwaro took my wife Ruramai Maronjese with whom I have two children. We got married in 2016 before he took her in September this year. My wife left me under the pretext that she was visiting her parents in Zaka. He should pay me three beasts as compensation for destroying my marriage”.

In his response Magwaro said he didn’t know that Ruramai was married. His response however, elicited shock after it emerged that he eloped with Ruramai while he was staying with the couple in the same area in Mberengwa.

For his greedy actions, Alfred who also attended the court session received a backlash from Chief Mpakwa.

He insisted that marrying off his daughter to another was not a ticket out of destitution.

Ruramai said she was no longer interested in her first husband.

It also emerged during trial that Hove once caught the two – Ruramai and Magwaro – having sex in their matrimonial bedroom.

After being provided with enough evidence, Chief Mpakwa said he fined Magwaro three beasts as punishment for bedding a married woman. statemedia

Mwonzora Rubbishes Khupe Suspension

By A Correspondent | In what is certain to discredit the just ended MDC -T congress, there was drama early Monday when the winner MDC Senator Douglas Mwonzora rushed to thank the election management board instead of the voters who ‘chose him’ for leadership.

“Its Time For People To Take The Struggle”

By Leonard Koni| The sun does not go down twice in a day. The current political , economic and social settings in Zimbabwe are in dire straits and leave a lot to be desired.

The country is stuck in between two horns of a dilemma. Its high time the people should unite and break this political log jam and solve this equation once and for all.

Trusting elections to solve Zimbabwean problems have proved  to be a mammoth task and a shear waste of time and resources as the ruling party has always declared itself the winner but still failing to solve the economic jig saw. It also has no any intentions to surrendering power on a silver platter at all costs to the opposition.

The truth remains that people have lost trust in Zimbabwe’s elections.
Patrick Chinamasa already declared that Zanu PF has bagged the 2023 election and its a deal done. So what will be the purpose of going for elections?  Will Zanu PF surrender power in the event that it has lost to MDC-Alliance?

Looking through my political lenses the opposition must be reminded that Zanu PF without the army is like a shell. Zimbabwe is a military state and nearly 90% of state and public institutions are staffed by military intelligence. The question we should be asking is on how to dismantle and break apart the system and the military chains holding back the people’s success and freedom so that it becomes user friendly.

I strongly believe that if no action is taken it might take us another forty years or more to have a second government as this one masquerading as the new dispensation has dismally failed. Progressive people should sit down and talk about poor governance, state capture, corruption and unemployed citizens in the country.

We must build a  Zimbabwe which we want, where everyone will enjoy the fruits of the country not like the only a few individuals are benefitting from the status quo. Majority of Zimbabweans want a decent life and food on their table.
Zimbabweans must stop waiting for a saviour to liberate themselves but should wake up, stop criticising and take action. Zimbabweans have a mountain to climb that needs more than a prayer to overcome.

Zimbabweans across the globe are tired of living in foreign lands where they face all sorts of human abuses and ill treatment.

They are tired of sending their hard earned money from diaspora to buy food, pay rent, medical bills for their relatives. How can a country rely solely on remittances instead of producing and exporting?

Whatever Nelson Chamisa does, it will have a stiff resistance from the army. As long as we still have the military state in power, it will be hard for him to lead the country. Our army is still too partisan and is 90% involved in domestic politics. Opposition leaders have been frustrated left, right and centre.

Josiah Hungwe said President Emmerson Mnangangwa will shoot to power, he did it in 2018 and what will stop him to continue doing that in 2023?

There is a mountain to climb for the opposition which needs a vicious approach starting from 2021 to push for electoral reforms.

We all want to be free from the jaws of the military. Fighting a military dictatorship which has been at the helm of power for more than forty years needs wisdom and courage. We all need to carry our cross assisting each other.  During the Chimurenga Zanu and Zapu, traditional leaders, war collaboraters and the masses were fighting from different angles They did not wait for Robert Mugabe to do the job.

A political struggle is not a ready mix which is ready to be used. Its a process.

FULL TEXT: Khupe Officially Writes to Mwonzora Confirming Suspension

As the MDC-T extra-ordinary congress drama continues, party acting president Thokozani Khupe has formally written to Mwonzora announcing his suspension from the party.

Yesterday, Khupe walked out of the extra-ordinary congress alleging massive rigging by Mwonzora.

She later held a press conference where she announced the suspension of Mwonzora from the party.

Khupe later wrote to Mwonzora announcing the suspension and below is the letter….

Those Who Lacked Leadership Must Admit Failure to Implement Supreme Court Judgement And Let Go.

Dear Editor,

Leadership failure was evident right from the word go – when a WhatsApp Congress to which a lot of the authentic 2014 MDC-T Council members were not invited. Leadership failure continued to be the order of the day through and through, those who had simply been mandated to organise an Extra-Ordinary Congress going overdrive to appoint officials to fill in gaps that the Supreme Court never said had to be filled – the only post that the Supreme Court had ordered to be filled was that of the President. But these legally illiterate leaders when on to unconstitutionally appoint, each of the interested candidates trying to get into the leadership people who they thought would support their candidature.

Covid-19 was initially used as an excuse for leadership failure, but the courts were generous enough to extend the time frame, exposing the greedy and lack of leadership qualities of the personalities involved, who always preached free and fair elections. Even the Government of Zimbabwe was generous enough to provide security when the Extra-Ordinary Congress date was finally set for 27 December 2020. And what happened at the Rainbow Tours on 27 December 2020 is there for the world to see. Despite the whole illegitimate Standing Committee meeting several times in the run-up to 27 December 2020 to tie the loose ends, leadership failure was glaringly evident.

I didn’t count the delegates, but from an interview done by one of the media houses with one of the delegates, he said there was no need for a quorum for an Extra-ordinary Congress of the Party. This is probably what the members of the illegitimate standing committee had been telling delegates that there wasn’t need for a quorum. But if you read Sections 6.2.6. and Section 6.2.7 of the constitution which deal with the Congress and Extra-Ordinary Congress, the sections say:

“6.2.6 A notice convening an Extra-Ordinary Congress shall be sent to all members entitled to attend and to each branch by the National Council at least one month before the date of the meeting.

6.2.7 The quorum of the Congress shall be two-thirds of the members entitled to attend, provided that if one hour after the stipulated time for commencement a quorum is not reached, the meeting will proceed subject to decisions thereat being approved by an Extra-Ordinary Congress called by the National Council within six months of the date of the inquorate Congress”.

This means the quorum for both the Congress and the Extra-Ordinary Congress are the same. After all, this Extra-Ordinary Congress was to elect a President, who should normally be elected at Congress, so for the President to have the full mandate, the quorum that legitimises them must be the usual quorum that legitimises an MDC President.  Of cause, the Extra-Ordinary Congress could have proceeded without a quorum, subject to the election results being approved by another Extra-Ordinary Congress called by the National Council.

Probably the person who gave the interview was ill-informed, but I suspect this is what the illegitimate Standing Committee had made delegates believe, given that they knew they would not make a quorum. One thing that these members of the illegitimate standing committee must know is that the Supreme Court did not say you must just hold an Extra-Ordinary Congress that does not live to the dictates of the MDC constitution. Members of the illegitimate Standing Committee knew very well that this was an election only for the authentic 2014 structures, so only the people who were in the authentic 2014 structures were entitled to contribute to the congress in the positions that they were in 2014. If some had died and some were not interested in participating and the numbers fell below the required quorum, then the election could not proceed and the matter would be water under the bridge, that is why the Supreme Court gave a time frame, that proves to the world that it was not mandatory, but it was a choice of the authentic 2014 structures, in their positions held at the time of the passing on of the late Dr Tsvangirai, provided they formed a quorum as provided in the constitution.

If I may borrow the wise words of Cephas Makuyana, the illegitimate Acting Chair for Harare Province “This is not an election. Even burial society elections are done in a better manner. We have run elections from labour movements, but I bow my head in shame”.  While I would agree with Mr Makuyana that this event was a shame judging by the video footage I have seen, I want to warn him that burial societies are dignified entities which serve a different purpose and their elections should never be compared to those of political parties.  Please don’t even get there.

I guess Senator Komichi, being the last person between him and Dr Khupe mandated to call the Extra-Ordinary Congress, will realise that he probably has a couple of days left to convene the Extra-Ordinary Congress suggested by the Supreme Court before it becomes water under the bridge, and the MDC-T which elected Dr Khupe in 2018, and the MDC Alliance which elected Advocate Chamisa should resume their programmes if they chose to – political acts are always by choice, but I assume that both Dr Khupe and Advocate Chamisa will be willing to continue working with the teams that elected them to the respective offices to pursue their respective Congress agendas. Of cause, if some chose to abandon the parties, it is their democratic choice. If some want to cross floors, let it be their democratic choice too.

All recalls from Council and Parliament must be reversed should Senator Komichi fail to convene an Extra-Ordinary Congress involving all interested relevant authentic MDC-T 2014 structures within the next couple of days.  The world is watching, the world is seeing, and Government of Zimbabwe and Parliament of Zimbabwe must be ashamed of themselves for their interference in the internal affairs of a political party when they knew very well the process suggested by the Supreme Court ruling was not a result of the process, which when successfully implemented, should have been the justification for the recall of legislators and councillors. Parliament and the Minister of Local jumped the gun in accepting the recalls when the process that justified the recalls had not been concluded, and now seems likely to fail.

Obert Gutu Feels Vindicated Over Decision To Quit MDC-T

By A Correspondent| Former MDC-T Deputy President Obert Gutu said he feels vindicated over a decision he made to quit the party and subsequently politics saying he could not be part and parcel of the charade he saw at the extra-ordinary congress held yesterday.

The MDC-T congress turned into chaos over accusations of rigging with the voters roll being the source of conflict as countless members could not find their names while candidates including Elias Mudzuri, Morgan Komichi and Thokozani Khupe left the venue in a huff after condemning the process.

Khupe eventually suspended the Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora who was also a candidate saying he rigged the elections.

In response, Mwonzora said another candidate cannot have the power to suspended a contestant.

The elections however proceeded in the absence of the trio of Mudzuri, Komichi and Khupe with Mwonzora announced the winner albeit discredited.

This forced Gutu to feel he made a good decision to quit the party.

“I surely made the CORRECT decision. There was NO way I was going to continue to be part & parcel of this charade.
It’s certainly beyond my personal dignity,” said Gutu.

Sikhala ‘Berates” Mnangagwa – Posturing Will Never End Dictatorship, Implementing Reforms Will

By Patrick Guramatunhu | “MDC Alliance vice-chairperson Job Sikhala has said Emmerson Mnangagwa has proved to be one of the worst authoritarian leaders to ever lead Zimbabwe, an accusation that comes as the nation next month marks the second anniversary of the bloody fuel price protests which were violently quashed by the military,” reported The Standard.

This is just another case of MDC silverback gorilla grandstanding and posturing to get attention and this is all they have done for the last 20 years. Worse still, the posturing is not harmless, MDC are the ones helping to keep Zanu PF in power!

The people of Zimbabwe have risked life and limb to elect MDC leaders into power for one principle reason – so that the party would bring about the democratic changes, as the party name implied, the nation was been dying for.

Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends had the golden opportunity during the 2008 to 2013 GNU to implement the democratic reforms, dismantle the Zanu PF dictatorship and thus end the curse of rigged elections. Sadly, they wasted the opportunity and failed to implement even one reform.

Mugabe bribed the MDC leaders with the trappings of high office, the ministerial limos, the very generous salaries and perks, a US$ 4 million mansion for Tsvangirai, etc., etc. With their snouts in the feeding trough, even the constant nagging by SADC leaders failed to get Tsvangirai and company to implement even one reform in five years.

“MDC leaders were busy enjoying themselves during the GNU, they forgot why they were there!” remarked one SADC diplomat in sheer exasperation.

Ever since GNU, Zanu PF has offered a few gravy train seats to entice the opposition to participate in the elections regardless how flawed and illegal the process happen to be. A honey trap Zanu PF knew MDC leaders would find irresistible, as David Coltart readily confessed in his book.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,” wrote Coltart.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

Blaming the “failure to agree a coalition” for participating in flawed and illegal 2013 elections was just a feeble excuse. Three of the main MDC factions plus three other parties did form a coalition, the MDC Alliance, before the 2018 elections. The coalition participated in the plebiscite without even a pose for thought although it was certain Zanu PF was rigging the elections.

As before, ZEC failed to produce something as elementary as verified voters’ roll for Pete’s sake.

By participating in these flawed and illegal elections MDC A gave the process “credibility”, as Coltart said, but, more significantly, it gave legitimacy the vote rigging Zanu PF.

MP Job Sikhala was one of the MDC A winners of the few gravy train seats and his denouncing of Mnangagwa as “one of the worst authoritarian leaders” must be taken with a pitch of salt given he is the one giving the Mnangagwa legitimacy.

Worse still, Sikhala’s posturing is publicity stunt to keep himself in the public eye, he is preparing to participate in the 2023 elections and thus perpetuating the Zanu PF dictatorship.

MDC leaders are running with the povo hare whilst hunting with the Zanu PF hounds.

Mnangagwa is smart enough to know a political opponent who calls “one of the worst authoritarian leaders” but never implement the reforms is a blessing compared to one who will implement the reforms and end the Zanu PF dictatorship!

It is the people of Zimbabwe who must wake-up to the political reality that after 20 years of MDC posturing, the nation is still stuck with the Zanu PF dictatorship. Enough of this posturing nonsense; what the nation is dying for is to have the reforms implemented.

If no reforms are implemented then the 2023 elections must be declared null and void. The last thing the nation wants is MDC giving Zanu PF legitimacy! The idea of Zanu PF remaining in power after the 2023 elections is simply unthinkable! – SOURCE: zimbabwelight.blogspot.com

ED DUMPED KHUPE YESTERDAY AS SHE FRANTICALLY PHONED FOR HELP | WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN TO KHUPE NOW?

By A Correspondent | In what is certain to discredit the just ended MDC -T congress, there was drama early Monday when the winner MDC Senator Douglas Mwonzora rushed to thank the election management board instead of the voters who ‘chose him’ for leadership.

“It’s The Time For The People To Take Lead In The Struggle”

By Leanard Koni- Leadership failure was evident right from the word go – when a WhatsApp Congress to which a lot of the authentic 2014 MDC-T Council members were not invited.

Leadership failure continued to be the order of the day through and through, those who had simply been mandated to organise an Extra-Ordinary Congress going overdrive to appoint officials to fill in gaps that the Supreme Court never said had to be filled.

The only post that the Supreme Court had ordered to be filled was that of the President. But these legally illiterate leaders went on to unconstitutionally appoint, each of the interested candidates trying to get into the leadership people who they thought would support their candidature.

Covid-19 was initially used as an excuse for leadership failure, but the courts were generous enough to extend the time frame, exposing the greedy and lack of leadership qualities of the personalities involved. despite them always preaching free and fair elections.

After all, this Extra-Ordinary Congress was to elect a President, who should normally be elected at Congress. So for the President to have the full mandate, the quorum that legitimises them must be the usual quorum that legitimises an MDC President.

If some had died and some were not interested in participating and the numbers fell below the required quorum, then the election could not proceed and the matter would be water under the bridge. That is why the Supreme Court gave a time frame, that proves to the world that it was not mandatory, but it was a choice of the authentic 2014 structures, in their positions held at the time of the passing on of the late Dr Tsvangirai, provided they formed a quorum as provided in the constitution.

If I may borrow the wise words of Cephas Makuyana, the illegitimate Acting Chair for Harare Province:

“This is not an election.

I guess Senator Komichi, being the last person between him and Dr Khupe mandated to call the Extra-Ordinary Congress, will realise that he probably has a couple of days left to convene the Extra-Ordinary Congress suggested by the Supreme Court before it becomes water under the bridge.

The MDC-T which elected Dr Khupe in 2018, and the MDC Alliance which elected Advocate Chamisa should resume their programmes if they chose to – political acts are always by choice, but I assume that both Dr Khupe and Advocate Chamisa will be willing to continue working with the teams that elected them to the respective offices to pursue their respective Congress agendas.

Cyclone Chalene Nears Beira

Africa Moyo | Herald | The tropical depression, identified as Chalane when it hits tropical storm status, passed over Madagascar over the weekend, bringing heavy rain as expected to the north and centre of the island and although losing power, is now entering the Mozambique Channel where it can pick up energy before probably reaching Beira late on Wednesday night although rainfall from the advance cloud bands could start falling tomorrow.

However, wind speeds are expected to be well under half those from Cyclone Idai last year, so the energy and force of the winds will be less than a quarter, while rainfall is likely to be about half that from Idai.

With so much less energy, it is likely to dissipate quicker as it passes over rugged terrain.

Initial reports said that 26 deaths were reported in Madagascar, with 18 in a single incident when a group tried to cross a flooded river

In an update yesterday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) said Chalane’s interactions with land would depreciate its effects, “it is set to emerge over water in the Mozambique Channel where a generally westward direction, towards the coast of Mozambique, is highly probable due to the steering winds”.

“Within the channel, it should re-intensify to peak spinning winds of 75km/h (which is less than half the wind spin-speed of Tropical Cyclone Idai at 175km/h) before it makes final landfall near Beira, Mozambique on Wednesday 30 December at 22:00hrs, where interaction with the rugged terrain will steadily weaken the system and lead to dissipation.

“Due to the nature of cloud bands, the effects may be felt as early as late Tuesday night, 29 December, with rainfall amounts of +100 mm over 24 hours, less than half of Tropical Cyclone Idai which ranged above 200 mm in 24 hours over Chimanimani and surrounding areas,” said the MSD.

MSD will give the next update today at midday.

Last Thursday, President Mnangagwa said systems had been activated to ensure those on low-lying ground were moved to high ground before Chalane reaches Zimbabwe.

The Department of Civil Protection has since activated its systems ready for the tropical depression.

A “a priority plan” has been agreed on, and a process to identify institutions that would be used to house any people displaced by the tropical depression or requiring emergency shelter, started last week.- state media

Zanu PF’s Visceral Brain Teaser: Pay The Teachers A Living Wage Without Fuelling Inflation

By Wilbert Mukori- Squaring the circle is a brain teaser as ancient as geometry itself in which one is asked to construct a square with the same area as a given circle or vice versa.

Let us just say President Mnangagwa and his Minister of Finance have set themselves a visceral challenge of paying the civil servants; especially the teachers and health workers who are already on starvation wages of US$50 p.m. vs a PDL of US$ 650 p.m.; without fuelling inflation, which is already 848% p.a.! It should be noted here that the two have maintained that Zimbabwe is on course to become an upper middle income nation by 2030, the so called vision 2030.

Both President Mnangagwa and his minister have said achieving vision 2030 will require great sacrifices. This is a visceral challenge, to these two reason and logic count for nothing; but still, surely the teachers and the health workers are not to be sacrificial lambs of vision 2030!

“Government must mellow down to a more constructive approach permeable to reason and facts rather than believing a casus belli (an excuse) proffered by Apex Council in which they see opposition politics in genuine labour issues,” complained Takavafira Zhou, president of Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ).

“Positive criticism nourishes leadership while self-pollination stifles debate, is parochial and weakens the ultimate output. Lies have short legs and capital and labour are strange bed fellows.

“The moment labour leaders whip members to accept hogwash and starvation salaries, such leaders would have stopped to represent workers and must be jettisoned from leadership.”

Mr Zhou was talking of jettisoning Apex Council leaders but, if truth should be said, it is the Zanu PF government leaders whom the nation should have jettisoned decades ago for stifled debate and democratic competition.

Zanu PF fostered the 1983 to 1987 Gukurahundi massacre on the nation which only ended with the signing of the Unity Accord with PF Zapu and imposition of the de facto one-party dictatorship. The Accord, Mugabe maintained, would bring national unity and economic development.

Zimbabwe’s economy has been in decline for the last 40 years precisely because the nation was stuck for all these years with a corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical dictatorship that rigged elections to stay in power.

National unity was but an excuse for stifling debate and democratic competition. Unity morphed into to conformity, into uniformity and, spuriously, ending up with brainwashed and braindead electorate incapable of even one coherent thought much less hold the regime to democratic account on anything.

It is little wonder the country’s opposition political leaders have turned out to be corrupt and incompetent, a braindead electorate cannot be expected to come up with a quality opposition.

With no quality electorate and/or opposition to hold Zanu PF leaders to democratic account and competition, it is no wonder Mnangagwa and his fellow Zanu PF thugs have too become braindead, with minds impermeable to reason and facts.

The solution to the geometry brain teaser:

w (width of square) = Square root (22/7) X r (radius of circle).

One does not need even basic economic, just common sense, to know:

  • Cannot pay civil servants a living wage without first reviving the comatose economy, the economic meltdown is getting worse
  • Cannot pay civil servants a wage increase (never mind a living wage) with first reviving the economic meltdown and not fuel inflation, inflation is already 848% p.a. and rising
  • Cannot revive the economy as long as Zimbabwe remains a pariah state, a dictatorship, ruled by corrupt, incompetent and vote rigging thugs who have proven beyond all doubt that they are braindead.
  • Decades of poor funding have left schools and health care services poorly resourced these services have all but completely collapse. Reviving the comatose economy is tough but it is even tougher with a whole generation of ill-educated and sickly citizens. As for vision 2030, that is just a midnight mirage for the naive and gullible!

After 40 years of gross mismanagement, rampant corruption, rank lawlessness, over 30 000 murdered for selfish political gain and the country in total economic ruins and despair – proof we have a braindead Zanu PF regime. It is shocking that there are still people hankering for the braindead regime to mellow down and pay them a living wage!!!!

“Government must mellow down to a more constructive approach permeable to reason and facts!” Insane!

In the long run, nations get the government they deserve; we in Zimbabwe certainly deserve this braindead Zanu PF dictatorship.

When the penny finally drops and we finally wakeup to the reality that one does not get blood from a stone; we will demand the implementation of democratic reforms and finally end the curse of rigged elections and bad governance.

Zimbabweans’ laissez-faire attitude to the important business of electing competent leaders shows we are not yet ready for good government. Until then Comrade Zhou and his fellow civil servant can continue demanding a living wages from this Zanu PF regime; why not, it is they own visceral brain teaser!

Tracing Why New Covid-19 Variants ‘Suddenly Rose’ In The U.K. And South Africa

Maya Wei-Haas

In early December, cases of COVID-19 soared in Kent, England—and scientists wanted to know why. For clues, Nick Loman, who is part of the COVID-19 Genomics Consortium U.K., and his colleagues examined how the coronavirus was mutating. By looking at this zoo of slightly different viruses, they could roughly track the outbreak’s spread through the community.

For SARS-CoV-2, these mutations—the small errors made naturally when genomes are copied—develop at a steady pace of one or two each month, says Loman, a professor of microbial genomics and bioinformatics at the University of Birmingham. Yet among the Kent cases, scientists found a large cluster that was remarkably different, with a total of 23 mutations arising without prior notice and faster than anyone expected.

“That’s how many mutations you have to go back to get to anything we’d seen before,” he says. “That’s a very striking and unusual finding.”

This discovery is part of what led British officials to sound the alarm last week. A follow-up investigation by Public Health England showed that the variant, known as B.1.1.7 or 501Y.V1, began to thrive at a time when cases were spiking in Kent and other parts of southeastern England. Retroactive tracing through a database of samples tied B.1.1.7 to patients as early as September 20. But by mid-November, the variant made up between 20 and 30 percent of cases in London and a region east of the city. Three weeks later, it was roughly 60 percent. And on December 23, U.K. scientists announced a separate SARS-CoV-2 variant reported last week in South Africa had now been spotted in two people in England.

Scientists are still uncertain about how the cluster of mutations arose or what they mean long-term for the virus’s transmission. One possible hypothesis for their origin involves chronically ill patients treated with experimental therapies like convalescent plasma donated by recovered COVID-19 patients. In such lengthy illnesses, the virus has more opportunities to replicate, increasing the odds for mutations. The consistent use of the therapies, meanwhile, may put more pressure on the germ to evolve.

“Some of these people who are chronically infected have some quite big shifts in the virus,” says Ravindra Gupta, a virologist at the University of Cambridge. “Some are immune-suppressed. Some of them have had convalescent plasma. Some of them have had [the antiviral] remdesivir.”

If this suspected origin story does prove to be the case, it could have implications for treatment, says Muge Cevik, a clinical lecturer in infectious diseases at the University of St. Andrews. Earlier in the pandemic, the best path for helping patients was unclear. That led hospitals to give patients a buffet of therapies, with the hope that some combination might work. But if new-wave medicines like antivirals and antibody therapy contributed to the development of viral variants, it will be “a reminder for all the medical community that we need to use these treatment options carefully.”

The many mutations

While mutations edit genetic code, they don’t always lead to outward changes in a germ or organism. That’s why these newfound variants have garnered so much concern. It’s as if the virus entered a dressing room and came out with a new outfit, rather than the normal circumstances where it would only change its hat.

Of the 23 mutations in the United Kingdom’s variant, 17 are at positions in the genome that alter the building blocks that make up the virus’s proteins, as described in a recent COVID-19 Genomics Consortium report from Loman and his colleagues. The consortium stated such a large shift is so far “unprecedented” for the COVID-19 pandemic. Eight of those changes lie in the region that encodes for the spike protein—the key that SARS-CoV-2 uses to enter cells.

While there is no direct evidence that this collection of mutations influences the severity of disease, modeling and prior laboratory work hints at the possibility that it could make the virus more contagious. A greater abundance of cases could mean more hospitalizations and deaths.

For example, lab experiments suggest that one of the observed deletions that eliminates two building blocks in the spike—dubbed H69 and V70—may double the viral infectiousness, according to a recent preprint. Other research hints that another mutation—N501Y—increases the spike protein’s binding capability. This one also independently arose in the South African variant (501Y.V2), which was first detected in October. But more work is necessary to determine if and how these changes might translate to differences in human transmission, Cevik says.

On December 18, the U.K.’s advisory panel for emerging respiratory outbreaks—which includes Cevik and some members of the COVID-19 Genomics Consortium—released a preliminary assessment of the variant. Their modeling hints that the variant might account for up to 70 percent greater transmission, but this takeaway is uncertain, Cevik cautions. Some of the spread could originate from human behavior, for instance more group gathering under loosened restrictions. More time, more research, and the country’s latest round of stay-at-home orders may yield clarity on the matter.

“Models are informative but not concrete,” Cevik says. She noted that the answer will likely come from a combination of evidence from a variety of fields—epidemiology, virology, genomics, as well as modeling. “Everything together tells us a story.”

Therapeutic sledge hammers

Where the story of B.1.1.7 begins is also a tantalizing mystery. Many scientists are pointing to the possibility of extra opportunities for viral evolution in people with compromised immune systems. These patients tend to suffer from chronic infections, during which the coronavirus can linger for weeks or even months.

Such a situation presents additional chances to replicate and accrue random mutations. One case report of a 45-year-old immunocompromised man, who was infected for nearly five months before succumbing, documented “accelerated viral evolution.” Most of the mutations occurred in the spike protein, including changes present in both variants under scrutiny in the U.K. and South Africa.

“The virus has just got a chance to stretch its legs a little bit,” Loman explains. After a year of closely tracking these mutations, scientists know that most don’t do anything noteworthy. Some are even harmful to the virus’s ability to multiply. For example, one mutation widely touted this year—D614G—increases coronavirus replication and infectivity while also making the germ more vulnerable to neutralization by antibodies.

But pressure from partially effective therapies for chronic patients could be part of the evolutionary push that allows some mutations beneficial for the virus to thrive. The idea is similar to HIV patients developing resistances to treatment after taking incomplete drug courses, says Gupta, who has spent a decade studying HIV resistance. “If you take a sledgehammer to a nut you can always crack it,” he says. But scientists don’t yet have a sledgehammer-like therapy for chronic COVID-19 patients.

For example, convalescent plasma has large differences in potency between doses thanks to natural variation between the array of antibodies produced by the immune systems of the donors, he says.

A few case studies hint at this kind of rapid evolution for chronically ill SARS-CoV-2 patients. In a recent preprint article, Gupta and his colleagues document mutation of the virus after a patient received three treatments of convalescent plasma starting at day 63 of their illness. Two of the viral mutations developed in genes that code for the spike protein. Something similar happened inside a 65-year-old cancer patient who survived after 105 days with the virus. And one of the mutations recently spotted in the South African variant—N439K—may allow the virus to bypass monoclonal antibody drugs, according to a preprint released by the COVID-19 Genomics Consortium in November.

Similar rapid viral evolution has also occurred in patients with influenza, says Emma Hodcroft, co-developer of Nextstrain, a global repository that tracks pathogen evolution in real time. Still, she cautions that there could be other origin stories. “There’s almost never just one way to do something in biology,” she says.

For example, a 2017 mathematical model of the stomach-churning norovirus predicted that immunocompromised individuals are too rare to generate variants that spread widely. Alternatively, uncontrolled spread may just offer enough chances for the virus to mutate in regular people with short bouts with the disease, says Mark Tanaka, a mathematical and computational biologist at the University of New South Wales Sydney, who is an author of the study. Both Pfizer and Moderna are checking if the variants can escape the antibodies generated by their respective vaccines, but pioneering scientists behind these drugs believe this scenario to be unlikely.

Hodcroft stresses that the discovery of the U.K. variant emphasizes the importance of genomic sequencing in COVID-19 surveillance. Out of the U.K.’s 2.1 million cases, the COVID-19 Genomics Consortium has sequenced 137,000 SARS-CoV-2 genomes total, which is about half of all those sequenced worldwide. Contrast that with the United States, which has sequenced only about 51,000 of its 18 million cases.

Such enhanced genomic testing explains why scientists in the U.K. were able to act so fast and warn others as B.1.1.7 slowly started to trickle into Denmark, The Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Hong Kong, and Australia—and how they just discovered two cases of the variant linked to South Africa.

“If we can try to put the effort in right now to try to identify who these people might be, get them tested, get them into quarantine, it might be that we can actually stamp [it] out,” says Hodcroft, adding that there is no time to waste.

“We might be able to do that with 100 people, it’ll be much much harder if we had thousands.”-National Geographic

Mnangagwa In Danger Of Getting COVID

The ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa played dice with death in Bulawayo on Sunday when he squeezed himself among visitors from COVID fested South Africa.

This was at the controversial Andrew Wutaunashe’s church meeting where Mnangagwa preached his vision 2030 to worshippers. PICTURE:

Mnangagwa said the country’s economic growth hinged on collaboration between the Government and churches, among other players.

“On our part as Government, we have chosen the spiritually correct path of working with the church in pursuit of our vision. Thus, as Zimbabwe, we shall serve the Lord sincerely and faithfully,” he said.

He continued:

“Going forward, I urge churches to emerge in 2021 and beyond as proponents, guarantors and implementers of our national development agenda. To this end, let me reiterate that the synergies between the church and the State must flourish and become more evident to our people.”

By A Correspondent- Eighteen people were killed, while 73 others were injured in 147 road accidents on Christmas Day and Boxing Day holidays.

During the same period last year, 17 were killed, while 174 others were injured in 276 accidents.

National police spokesman Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday attributed the accidents to speeding, reversing errors, following too closely and inattention

Chitungwiza Police Shoots Own Wife At Home

By A Correspondent- A Police Sergeant yesterday gunned down his wife, a fellow police officer, at their home in Chitungwiza.

By last night, it was not clear why Sergeant Tichaona Chirinhe (38) based at Crime Prevention Unit of Harare Central Police Station, killed his wife Julian Chirinhe (37), who was also a Sgt in the traffic section.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the shooting.

“Sergeant Tichaona Chirinhe has been arrested for killing his wife. The incident happened this (yesterday) morning in Chitungwiza. After the shooting, the now deceased was rushed to a nearby clinic in Chitungwiza before being transferred to Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals where she was confirmed dead on arrival,” said Asst Com Nyathi.

He said the police does not condone acts of abuse of service pistols as well as equipment by members.

He said they always call members of the force and the generality of the people of Zimbabwe to resolve their problems amicably whenever there are problems.

“We do not condone acts of criminality by our members, and in this case the officer has been arrested and the law will take its course,” he said.

“We again do not condone the abuse of service pistols and any other equipment by officers.”

Asst Comm Nyathi said it is disheartening that Sergeant Chirinhe was murdered at a time the force had just promoted her early this month.-statemedia

Harare Records 8 More COVID-19 Deaths

By A Correspondent- An additional eight Covid-19 deaths have been reported, all from Harare, to take the overall death toll to 349 since the pandemic was first reported in Zimbabwe.

All eight are community deaths in the last seven days, but had not yet been reported.

The deaths come at a time when the country recorded 114 new cases yesterday.

A daily Covid-19 update from the Ministry of Health and Child Care last night said all the 114 cases were local transmissions. Another 83 new Covid-19 cases were recorded on Saturday.

Seventy-four new recoveries were reported yesterday, leaving the National Recovery rate at 81 percent.

As at yesterday, Zimbabwe has now recorded 13 077 cases, 10 593 recoveries, 2 135 active cases and 349 deaths.

Experts are pleading with citizens to observe Covid-19 safety protocols such as practising social distancing, wearing of face masks, washing and sanitising hands, or risk seeing a spike in cases under the second wave.

Cumulatively, Africa has recorded 2 644 112 cases as at yesterday, with 2 212 975 recoveries and 62 366 deaths, of which South Africa has the lion’s share at over 26 276 deaths.

MSD Urges Citizens To Watch Out For Cyclone Chalane In The Next 24hrs

Zimbabwe’s Meteorological Services Department (MSD) has urged the citizenry to be alert as Cyclone Chalane has made landfall in Madagascar and is expected to reach the Eastern parts of Zimbabwe in 24 hours. Below is the MSD update on cyclone Chalane.

WHAT?: OVERLAND DEPRESSION CHALANE

WHERE?: OVER MADAGASCAR

WHEN?: SUNDAY, 27 DECEMBER 2020 WATCH OUT FOR (in the next 24hours)!:

  • Moving into the Mozambique Channel
  • Rejuvenates and strengthens once more

HOW?: Tropical Depression Chalane (previously a tropical storm) made landfall over Madagascar today, Sunday 27 December; but the effects of this systems were felt as early as Friday 25 December 2020 over the island, with massive flooding and reports of at least 26 people feared dead as 18 were swept away trying to cross a flooded river.

While interactions with land will depreciate the effects of this system, it is set to emerge over water in the Mozambique Channel where a generally westward direction, towards the coast of Mozambique, is highly probable due to the steering winds. Within the channel, it should re-intensify to peak spinning winds of 75km/hour (which is less than half the wind spin-speed of TC Idai @ 175km/hr) before it makes final landfall near Beira, Mozambique on Wednesday 30 December at 2200hr, where interaction with the rugged terrain will steadily weaken the system and lead to dissipation. Due to the nature of cloud bands, the effects may be felt as early as late Tuesday night, 29 December, with rainfall amounts of +100 mm/24hr (less than half of Tropical Cyclone Idai which ranged above 200 mm/24hr over Chimanimani and surrounding areas). The next update will be on Monday 28 December by 1200hrs.

BREAKING: Instead Of Thanking Voters, Mwonzora Confidently Announces That It’s The Election Management Board Members Who Elected Him.

By A Correspondent | In what is certain to discredit the just ended MDC -T congress, there was drama early Monday when the winner MDC Senator Douglas Mwonzora rushed to thank the election management board instead of the voters who ‘chose him’ for leadership.

By A Correspondent- The celebratory mood has left two families in Banket grieving after two children aged eight and eleven died due to suspected food poisoning during a Boxing Day party hosted by their neighbours.

The children, who were foaming at the mouth, died the next morning. Asst Comm Nyathi said police would avail more details in due course as investigations were in progress.

50 Babies Born On Christmas Day

Sally Mugabe Central Hospital recorded 22 deliveries, followed by Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals’ Mbuya Nehanda maternity wing, where 20 babies were born while Chitungwiza Central Hospital had 13 births.

Sally Mugabe Central Hospital matron Mrs Dade Pedzisai said a set of twins were among the babies delivered at the hospital. Said Mrs Pedzisai:

“The first delivery was recorded at 12 midnight on Christmas Day,” said Mrs Pedzisai.

We had a total of 22 babies and of these, 15 were boys while seven were girls and among them was a set of twins.

“Mafume Was Arrested For Exposing The Capture Of Local Authorities By Govt”: Biti

MDC Alliance vice president, Tendai Biti, claims Harare Mayor, Councillor Jacob Mafume, was arrested for exposing the capture of local authorities by the central government.

His remarks come as Mafume is in prison after he was arrested for criminal abuse of office after he allegedly parcelled out council stands to his relatives earlier this year.

Posting on Twitter on Saturday, the former Minister of Finance during the Government of National Unity (GNU) era, called for the immediate release of Mafume.

He said:

The mayor of Harare Jacob Mafume is a humble intelligent, jovial, decent comrade.

Zanu PF has targeted him for exposing its capture of local authorities.

The Mwonzora and Khupe cabal has been complicit in this agenda. For Christ’s sake, release him now.

His remarks are consistent with those of other MDC Alliance members who argued that he was arrested for opposing the demolition of “illegal” structures across the city.

The demolitions caused a lot of pandemonium with the ruling party accusing the MDC Alliance-dominated council of destroying people’s homes while the opposition party claimed the city officials responsible for the demolitions were central government appointees not control by MDC.

Meanwhile, Mafume’s bail hearing has been set for this Monday at the High Court. Mafume is now facing charges of attempting to bribe a state witness in his criminal abuse of office case

Tribute To Fallen Journalists

December has definitely been the worst month of the year 2020, which has really turned out to be the annus horribilis for virtually all Zimbabweans, especially members of the proverbial fourth estate following the consecutive deaths of Charles Laiton on December 21; Tendai Ndemera on December 22; and Foster Dongozi on December 23.

I had already paid tribute to Laiton for and on behalf of the Alpha Media Holdings’ Independent editorial Advisory Board of Trustees. On this occasion, I would like to pay tribute to both Ndemera and Dongozi with whom I interacted at different levels and contexts.

I first met Ndemera during the early 1990s when I was the vice-chairman of the inaugural Sports and recreation commission. He struck me as a compulsive, enthusiastic and eloquent storyteller, particularly on matters pertaining to football. As his own promising career as a footballer in the junior ranks of Dynamos Fc had come to an untimely end, I thought he had the makings of another Gary Lineker, who has carved out a very successful career for himself as a sports pundit-cum-journalist when his playing days for various clubs, including my beloved Tottenham Hotspur FC, and England came to an inevitable end.

Our respective paths crossed later, albeit briefly, at the Associated Newspapers of Zimbabwe (AnZ), the publishers of the original Daily News and Daily News on Sunday. I held the fort then as chairman and CEO of ANZ whilst he served as one of the more competent and knowledgeable sports reporters.

My first encounter with Dongozi was in 2007 following my election as chairman of the inaugural Voluntary media council of Zimbabwe (VmcZ) whilst he served as the secretary-general of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ), a position, which he held until he passed away.

Dongozi was quite a formidable as opposed to a rabid and cantankerous trade unionist when it came to dealing with issues affecting the welfare of journalists. my enduring memory of him and ZUJ was that they never stopped striving, at all material times, to be on the same page with the VmcZ with regard to the promotion of the hallowed principles of media freedom, accountability, diversity, plurality, inclusivity, independence and ethical journalism.

My second and final encounter with Dongozi and ZUJ was during my stint as mayor of Harare from July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2013 when I opened the doors for them at Town House for the establishment of an affordable housing scheme for journalists. To that end, I contributed the princely sum of US$450 as a token of my support for what was and still is a worthy cause. In all my interactions with Dongozi, I found him to be the proverbial gentleman and a scholar.]

Whilst conveying our most sincere condolences to their respective loved ones, we must also pray for their departed souls to rest in eternal peace.

Mwonzora Sacked

By A Correspondent- The interim Secretary of the opposition MDC-T, Douglas Mwonzora has been suspended from the party by the interim party president, Thokozani Khupe, following the chaos that rocked the party’s extraordinary congress held at the Harare International Conference Centre this Sunday.

Morgen Komichi and Khupe left the HICC in a huff as they were being attacked by individuals allegedly aligned to Mwonzora. Senator Mwonzora says he cannot be dismissed from the party by a fellow candidate.

Said Mwonzora:

“I expect them (Khupe and Komichi) to cool down, to relax and accept the verdict of the people. I don’t think it is a split. A split is where the owners of the MDC T split. The owners of the MDC in this regard are intact and as you see, as you saw it was individual candidates who saw how the election was going who have moved out.

The members of congress remained and resolved that they should continue and they have continued. I can’t be suspended by a fellow candidate in an election during an election. And in a few minutes, hours time we will have a new president and it is up to that president and the national executive to deal with that matter. It is an act of illegality.”

The congress was meant to elect the party’s substantive heir to the late founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

Zanu PF Will Win 2023 Because Opposition Lacks Unity” – Nonsense, Unity Will Never Ever Supplant Competence

By Patrick Guramatunhu- “Opposition politician Jacob Ngarivhume sees a bleak future for opposition politics in Zimbabwe, and has resigned to the fact that the ruling Zanu-PF will win again in the 2023 elections,” reported Zimbabwe Voice.

“I think more disappointing than fighting Zanu-PF is the lack of unity amongst the opposition,” Ngarivhume wrote on social media, adding that now was the time to act and to “tell it like it is”.

Poor Ngarivhume, even now with the benefit of hindsight, he still does not get it! MDC A lacked leaders with the intellectual prowess and vision to implement the reforms and thus stop Zanu PF rigging elections. Zanu PF will win the 2023 elections as long as the party retains its carte blanche powers to rig the elections, even if all the 130, not just the six as in 2018, opposition political parties were united.

It is not the lack of a united opposition that has kept Zanu PF in power, but rather lack of a competent and quality opposition.

You cannot make a silk purse out of sower’s ear!

The 2008 elections were a watershed in Zimbabwe’s history, Zanu PF’s cheating and use of wanton violence was so blatant that not even SADC and AU leaders, known for turning a blind-eye to dodgy Zimbabwean elections, were forced to condemn the elections. SADC leaders forced Mugabe and Zanu PF to agree to the implementation of the democratic reforms designed to stop the party rigging elections.

During the 2008 to 2013 GNU, Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends had the golden opportunity to implement the democratic reforms. They failed to implement even one token reform in five years – proof they are breathtakingly incompetent and corrupt.

It did not make any sense for any one in the opposition camp to contest the 2013, especially the MDC-T given its popularity, elections knowing fully well without reforms Zanu PF would rig the elections. And yet MDC-T participated in the flawed and illegal elections, turning victory into defeat; Zanu PF was never going to lose an election in which the party has carte blanche powers to rig.

David Coltart, one of the MDC ministers in the 2008 to 2013 GNU, argued the opposition would have boycotted the 2013 elections in they were united; same argument Jacob Ngarivhume is making now.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,” wrote Coltart in his book.

Just before the 2018 elections, the opposition did unite. Transform Zimbabwe led by Ngarivhume, MDC-N of which Coltart was a senior member and MDC-T led by Morgan Tsvangirai plus three other parties formed a coalition, MDC Alliance (MDC A).

Judging from the size of the crowds attending MDC A rallies, the party commanded a very significant popular support. The party participated in the 2018 elections; there was never any talk of boycotting the elections although it was clear, with no reforms in place, Zanu PF would rig the elections.

MDC-T turned certain electoral victory into landslide defeat in 2013 by participating in flawed and illegal elections for the same reason MDC leaders failed to implement even one reform during the GNU – they are breathtakingly incompetent. As we saw, uniting the opposition to form the MDC A made no difference as the coalition too participated in the flawed and illegal 2018 elections.

United or not the MDC A and the rest of Zimbabwe’s opposition will participate in the 2023 elections, with not even one reform in place. Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF cronies are counting on the opposition to participate and hence the reason the regime has ignored all calls to implement reforms.

Zimbabwe’s opposition leaders are so breathtakingly incompetent they are failing to see the importance of implementing the reforms, of free and fair elections, verified voters’ roll, etc.; even after these have been explained to them thousands of times. These simpletons have not only failed to comprehend the reality one cannot make a silk purse out of sow’s ear but are stuck with foolish notion that unity can and must supplant quality!

It is 40 years of corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF misrule that has dragged the nation into the economic and political mess Zimbabwe finds itself in today. However, the reason we are stuck in this mess these last decade is because MDC leaders are corrupt and breathtakingly incompetent. It is not so much a united opposition the nation is dying for but a competent one.

Gutu “Celebrates” Decision To Quit MDC T

Khupe Runs For Dear Life At The EOC

By A Correspondent- MDC-T interim leader Thokozani Khupe and party national chairperson Morgen Komichi yesterday ran for dear life after suspected followers of secretary general Douglas Mwonzora pelted the top table with some empty and half empty water bottles accusing the two of trying to stop a party extraordinary congress taking place at the Rainbow Towers in Harare.

Khupe was forced out of the Special Congress after calling off the elections citing rigging.

The warring factional contestants Khupe and Mwonzora were in a near fist fight over alleged voter fraud at the ongoing Supreme Court-ordered Extraordinary Congress.

ZRP Call for Pubic to Wear Face Masks – Hypocritical: Bulawayo Residents

By Tiden Makeke

A cop in Bulawayo yesterday illegally boarded a taxi without wearing a face mask despite threats by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Spokesperson, Paul Nyathi to “take … action against … offenders”.

The failure to put on a mask is a violation of anti-Coronavirus (COVID-19) laws enacted by government to safeguard against the spread of the pandemic in March 2020. As at December 27, 2020 despite 1015 tests done by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, active cases stand at 2135. Total recoveries at 10 593 expressed as a percentage of 13077 total cumulative cases pegs Zimbabwe’s National Recovery Rate at 81%. Fatalities stand at at 349 with Harare and Bulawayo cities being recorded as COVID-19 hot spots.

On December 24, 2020, ZRP Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi warned “kombi operators (commuter bus operators)” not to cramp (sic) people in their kombis as witnessed this morning in … Harare and Bulawayo.” Paul went further to accuse commuter bus drivers of not “putting on face masks, not practising social distancing and putting four passengers at the front seat”.

He warned that “the public should not cry foul when the law takes its course.”

However, in what should embarrass Paul, a police officer travelling from Bulawayo’s Kingsdale suburb to town boarded a taxi without wearing a protective face mask as required by law. The unidentified police officer, who was loud and seemingly not in control of all his senses, did not attempt to stop other passengers who took photos of him.

The penalty payable at the police station for not wearing a mask in public is a USD6 or ZWL 500 fine at the official bank rate.

Rodrick Fayayo is a member of the Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA), which works with surbub and township residents associations among other things. Rodrick criticised the behaviour of the police officer saying that it is caused by lawlessness.

“It can be a reflection of two things, which all have dire implications for Bulawayo residents. The first is that besides proving lawlessness, the cop’s behaviour exposes passengers to the deadly COVID-19 virus. Latest reports from England, Germany, South Africa and other European countries state that the virus has a new and deadly variant,” said Rodrick of BPRA.

“People are doing what they want and no one is there to police them. So if a police officer can go around without following the protocols it becomes difficult for the ZRP to enforce the law. Police cannot apprehend anyone who is not properly dressed because it’s not a priority for them,” fumed Rodrick.

“The second thing is that there is dearth of leadership in the police force. Kukomhlambi uzelusile (Ours is a place where a flock shepherds itself). They know no one will do anything to them so they just behave in a reckless manner,” continued Rodrick.

The cop’s failure to wear a mask pours water on the strongly-worded warning given issued by Paul to commuter bus operators.

While Paul encouraged the public to “take heed of” his “warning” because “police officers have been directed to take action” it seems the ZRP needs to first crack its whip on the errant officer before whipping commuter bus operators into line.

Jacob Sibanda is a resident of North End. He was a passenger in the taxi, which was boarded by the police officer. Jacob believes that “Assistant Commisssioner Paul Nyathi must not be a hypocrite. Paul must first discipline his subordinate before ordering taxi drivers to wear face masks. We cannot have a lawless police force.”

Efforts to get a comment from Paul were fruitless as his phone rang continously without being answered.

By A Correspondent- Senator Douglas Mwonzora has said trashed clais that the MDC T has split following the chaos that rocked the party’s Extra Ordinary Congress held in the capital Harare Sunday.

Kadewere Unstoppable

After top-scoring with 20 goals and four assists in his debut season at French Ligue 1 side Le Havre, Tino Kadewere was, as expected, one of the most sought-after players in France.

Incredibly for the Highfield-bred striker, that campaign at Havre was marred by three injuries which kept him out of action for a while, but he still finished it with the most goals scored.

It then emerged that English Premier League sides Southampton and Crystal Palace, Scottish giants Celtic and Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Lyon, were chasing after the lanky star’s signature.

Ultimately, it was Lyon who snapped up the Zimbabwe international, paying a reported €14 million for his services.

The move was met with divergent views within the local football-loving public, as some were pleased with the prospects of seeing him play for such a big club on a big stage while others were skeptical of the possibility of him commanding a regular place.

Admittedly, even legendary former Warriors captain Benjani ‘The Undertaker’ Mwaruwari, who at some point played in the French top-flight for AJ Auxerre, was also not sure if Kadewere can play regularly in Rudi Garcia’s side.

“Tino (Kadewere) is doing very well, I have been watching him,” the former Warriors captain said. “But, I must warn that this season could be difficult for the boy, especially if Depay (Memphis) and the other top strikers at Lyon stay,” he said in September.

That has not been the case though.

Tino has, incredibly, established himself as not only a regular at Les Gones, but one of the most key members of the squad.

With seven goals and three assists to his name in the 2020/21 campaign, Kadewere has more than defied odds which were stuck against him.

To put icing on the cake, the Warriors star has formed a lethal combination in attack, alongside skipper Dutch ace Memphis Depay, and impressive Cameroonian Karl Toko Ekambi.

The trio has combined for most of Lyon’s goals this season.

That development has seen star Frenchman Moussa Dembele being dropped to the bench for the last seven league games.

The Dembele factor was also used as a reason by naysayers who doubted Kadewere’s ability to fight for a place in the Lyon side.

His highlight moment so far this season is undoubtedly his solitary strike which sank a star-studded Paris Saint Germain.

Thanks to that goal, Lyon won at the home of the defending champions for the first time since 2007.-Soccer 24

President Chamisa Donates Christmas Presents To The Needy

Tinashe Sambiri|The MDC Alliance Women’s Assembly United Kingdom South West District, through the office of President Nelson Chamisa, has donated Christmas presents to the needy in Zimbabwe.

In a statement, the MDC Alliance Women’s Assembly UK South West District accused Zanu PF of impoverishing millions of Zimbabweans.

Read statement below:

As we all know, Christmas is a time for giving those less fortunate than us.

In accordance with this tradition, the UK MDC A South West District Women’s Assembly carried out a fundraiser that saw many people in the MDC UK and Ireland as well as other well wishers donate money towards President’s Christmas Cheer Fund.

The funds raised were used to buy hampers containing basic groceries which were donated by President Chamisa to deprived families in Zimbabwe.

Let’s not forget that the reason why there are starving families is because of the Zanu government which has presided over the worst deterioration of living standards in the history of Zimbabwe.

Let’s not forget that people are starving because Zanu continues to steal money from the economy. The ruthlessness of the corruption is happening because the man who made himself President of Zimbabwe is the biggest crook and most ruthless individual to burden our people.

Zimbabweans will do so much better under a Chamisa presidency, everyone knows this.

A special thanks to everyone who donated towards this good cause and a big thank you to His Excellence Adv Nelson Chamisa and VP Lynnete Karenyi who presented the hampers on 23 December 2020 in Harare.

Christmas Day, 2020

Overcoming the yoke of oppression to give life to the citizens anti-corruption drive

Jacob Ngarivhume Convenor of the July 31st Movement – a Civil Rights Movement

25 December 2020 is Christmas day. I woke up early; way before 5.00am. My programme was hectic. My team had lined up key engagements for the day.

First, the day would start with a visit to the Kuchengetana Trust in Chitungwiza where Samantha runs an amazing feeding scheme for children and other vulnerable citizens. Our plan was to spend our day with her and appreciate what she goes through while doing such a splendid job.

But we could not afford such a luxury because Friday was a reporting day to the police. Following my violent arrest on 20 July 2020, I spent a harsh 45 days in unjust detention. I was eventually granted bail together with my compatriot Hopewell Chin’ono by the High Court. My bail conditions are unreasonably strict. Other than the fifty thousand dollars I had to pay, they seized my passport and asked me to report three times a week to Waterfalls Police Station, which I have been doing religiously for the past four months.

This, though, has become a cruel yoke. The authorities have got us where they want us; we cannot travel nor can we do meaningful work. We feel the heavy load of oppression upon our shoulders. Every year I farm at my rural home. But this year it has been impossible because of my onerous bail conditions. I could not travel home to Bikita and Chimanimani because I have to report to the police three times a week. The police station has become my second home.

My arrest was not only completely unnecessary; it was a travesty of justice.

I specifically called for peaceful anti-corruption demonstrations set for the 31st of July 2020. In my view, and in the mind of the many fellow citizens who joined me, our call was absolutely just. Zimbabwe is a blessed nation, but completely run down by corruption, among other ills. Corruption is now endemic in our nation. We could no longer just sit and wait, and do nothing. We had to act. When I called for the peaceful protests, my belief and expectation was that all Zimbabweans would embrace it, including the President.

Alas! How wrong I was. They deliberately misinterpreted my campaign against corruption as a threat to overthrow the government.

It seems clear to me, and to many other citizens, that they clamped down on the protests because their very survival depends on corruption. If corruption falls, they fall too. But when we decided to persist with our campaign, I started to receive death threats and threats of arrest. I had to become a wanderer, seldom sleeping at home, and never sleeping at the same place twice.

On 18 July 2020 I received a text message from a South African number saying that if I am lucky, they will arrest me within two days, but most likely they would kill me.

On the 20th of July I was arrested, together with my friend and compatriot Hopwell Chin’ono.

We spent 45 days in filthy cells, no functional toilets, no social distancing, and having to fight for our every right in court, including medical attention, warm food, visits, etc. That story we have shared often enough. Weeks later our great friend and fearless fighter for democracy, Job Sikhala, was also arrested and detained with us at Chikurubi Maximum Prison. While we suffered terrible moments together, we were blessed with a great opportunity to build a lasting friendship. And we did not waste that chance.

A week before Christmas, Hopewell approached the High Court and got his passport back temporarily to travel to South Africa for medical attention. Job approached the same high court and got his reporting conditions relaxed to reporting once a week. I did the same, yet they refused to relax my reporting conditions. Amazing! This level of inconsistency from the same court is hardly surprising. Such callous decisions define exactly who they are, and they don’t care one bit. Many are accused of being captured, and you can’t help but feel that it’s quite true!

On Christmas day we had agreed with my brother Job to join hands and do the reporting together. We agreed to start from Chitungwiza and then go to Hatfield and then Harare Central. Following my meeting with community activist and fearless fighter, Vongai Zimudzi, she decided to join us on this Christmas rendezvous.
My programme started with the visit to Kuchengetana Trust.

Mai Ngarivhume joined me on the trip. We were there before 7.00 am and watched them prepare porridge to feed the children. As early as 6.00 am some of the children were already queuing waiting to be served. Samantha and her family are surely doing a lot of amazing work! We realised a number of areas that need attention. And so we will go back with assistance there.

From Unit A we travelled to St Marys where I picked up my friend Job to go to the local police station to report. As I had not been to his house before, I called him to ask if he could give me directions. He simply said, “ask anyone they will tell you where I live”. We did, and we were directed accordingly! Everyone in the car commented on the great leadership of our brother. Easy accessibility is a core benchmark of good leadership!

We reported at St Marys Police Station. When we were inside the station, Job showed me trenches which the military dug inside the police station overlooking the road to Harare in preparation of the peaceful 31st July peaceful. The plan was to ‘shoot’ at whoever was going to Harare from Chitungwiza. I could not believe it. It dawned on me that this regime must actually believe its own lies. Before my arrest, they were peddling lies that we were sponsored by the Americans and that we wanted to overthrow the government. But I obviously thought that, since they knew they were lying, they could never believe their own lies.

But alas! They do. Crazy. We have to grapple with the fact that they believe that if citizens call for an end to corruption, they must be sponsored by the West. They cannot imagine that we Zimbabweans have the capacity to demand an end to corruption on our own initiative. Madness. Such is the mind of the oppressor. He conjures up threats in his own mind to create a big illusion!

We then drove to Harare Central Police where Vongai reported. We met Jim Kunaka there, arrested the previous day by the CIO and then dumped at Harare Central Police Station.

Years before Jim terrorised many citizens with the support of the ruling party, Zanu-PF. He apologised later when he was expelled from the party. Following the coup, he found himself on the other side of the isle. One can only be astounded at such a turn of events.

From Harare Central Police we went to my local police station in Waterfalls. I have become a familiar face there. The yoke of oppression is what characterises me there.

They know I come virtually every other day. My reporting form is not kept with the rest, but separately in the Officer-in-Charge’s office. This is a huge inconvenience. On some days, when I want to take the chance to travel and meet people outside Harare, I go early to the police station. But I usually find that the office is closed. Although I have challenged this arrangement, they insist the instruction is to keep my form secure so that no one ‘steals’ it. It’s crazy.

While at Waterfalls Police, Job met a policeman who was a former top security aide to the late MDC President, Morgan Tsvangirai, but who is now a full-time police officer. We ponder whether he was a member of the police force way back then. Wonders never cease when people are fighting a dictatorship!

We ended the exhausting reporting process at my house where Mrs Ngarivhume prepared some Christmas lunch for us. We settled down to hours of deep and intense discussions. We concluded that we need to prepare for a long and demanding fight to end corruption in this country. We were honest with each other: Zanu PF holds all the leavers of control to influence the judiciary, the police, CIO, the military and many other state institutions, which must be made independent. They serve at their pleasure without shame. In that case we have to be prepared to suffer the worst.

The determination of the team gave me hope and inspiration. While the regime uses every tool at their disposal, we depend on our only available tool; our inner strength derived from the righteousness of our cause! We all agreed that during this journey we will suffer the scorn and humiliation poured on us by Zanu-PF and its sympathisers.

We will suffer the shame of being falsely accused and imprisoned for crimes we did not commit. We will suffer the terror of threats on our lives and those of our loved ones.

We will suffer the agony of false reports written and shamelessly circulated about wrongs we never committed. This is the cross we have to bare for the sake of all.
Our resolve is unshakeable. Our will to fight corruption is neither dimed nor diminished. Our call for citizens to be vigilant in this fight only becomes more persistent and urgent. A better day for our nation is on the horizon. The more we are persecuted, the more determined we are to resist, stand strong, and fight.

On Monday I am back at the police station once again.

“Constructing Houses For Chiefs Is Not Sustainable”: Housing Minister

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwean government has abandoned the construction of houses for chiefs programme arguing it is not a sustainable programme.

The matter came to light last week when Chief Ephraim Chikwaka had implored the National Housing ministry to build decent houses for the traditional leaders. Said the traditional leader:

At what stage is the ministry (of Housing) in terms of constructing houses for traditional chiefs so that they can have a decent status in society?

Housing minister, Daniel Garwe, responded saying the government had observed that the construction of houses for chiefs is not a sustainable programme.

He added:

Chiefs, like every Zimbabwean, look upon the government for their welfare and upkeep, but the government does not have enough resources.

It is not sustainable due to the fact that today we have Chief Ephraim Chikwaka, we build a house for him and he passes on and another chief takes over who will also want a house constructed for him.

The government made a decision to construct traditional courts, which must be modern structures constructed within each chief’s jurisdiction.

This court will be used by chiefs for generation after generation and is a sustainable project which is the government’s position and intends to undertake.

We must understand that the government does not have resources for individuals and it will help us a lot to move forward in terms of development.

The traditional courts which are expected to have been constructed by 2021 will be for the purposes of hearing matters or disputes arising in that particular area.

Besides being paid a monthly allowance, traditional chiefs in the country have been allocated all-terrain vehicles by the government to facilitate their work in rural areas.

Since the days of the late former President Robert Mugabe, the Zanu-PF government has been showering traditional leaders with benefits and powers ranging from trucks, houses and land to the mandate to distribute food handouts in times of drought.

In return, traditional leaders played an active role as electoral ambassadors of Zanu-PF and did not object maltreatment of their subjects by forces loyal to the government during election times.

Of late, however, some traditional leaders including Chief Nhlanhla Ndiweni, have been critical of the government which they accused of infringing human rights.-dailynews

#BREAKING- “The Congress Is Going Ahead”: Mwonzora Declares As Khupe, Mudzuri Walk Out

By A Correspondent- Senator Douglas Mwonzora has declared that the MDC T congress is going ahead despite his arch contenders in the presidential race Dr Thokozani Khupe and Engineer Elias Mudzuri trashing the current voters’ roll being used at the MDC T congress.

https://youtu.be/bJ54B0I3hNU

Mwonzora revealed this in an exclusive interview with ZimEye and he said:

“The congress is going ahead.”

Mwonzora’s sentiments come after the voting process for Bulawayo province was shelved after it emerged that there was a ballot book that went missing.

There was chaos at the Harare International conference centre where the MDC T is holding its congress after prominent party people like David Tekeshe who is Manicaland Treasurer General had his name missing in the voters’ roll.

The party is currently using a supplementary voters roll with names of those missing from the main one.

This is a developing story. More details to follow…….

Congestion At Beitbridge Cleared

By A Correspondent- The Department of Home Affairs says that traffic congestion at the Beitbridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe has been cleared.

This follows reports of at least eight people having died while waiting to cross over.

Outside the border post, frustrated truck drivers also complained about having spent several days in snaking queues.

The Health Department earlier announced that it had stopped requesting 72-hour COVID-19 test results from travellers at the Beitbridge border in a bid to further ease traffic congestion.

In a statement, Home Affairs says the border is now easily accessible.

“The Musina Local Municipality provided additional holding areas which enabled vehicles going to the border to be released to travel in manageable numbers. The municipality also provided ablution facilities and water along the route from the town of Musina to the port of entry.”

Travellers are urged to continue observing traffic and immigration laws as well as health protocols in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Elias Mudzuri Cries Foul

By A Correspondent- One of the four candidates contesting the MDC-T presidency, Elias Mudzuri, has raised a red flag over preparations to hold the extraordinary congress (EOC), saying the party did not have enough money to fund it after US$60 000 went missing.

The congress is supposed to elect a successor to the late party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, but there was no agreement on the voters roll to be used or the venue, two days before it is held.

Later in the evening, however, government gave permission for the party to hold  the congress at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).

Mudzuri said the party had no money to hold the congress after it failed to account for US$60 000 which was advanced to the party by government under the Political Parties Finance Act. It postponed the congress to Sunday from last weekend following disagreements over the voters’ roll.

Provincial structures started verifying the voters roll on Wednesday and Mudzuri said by evening yesterday, they had not finalised, raising fears that the process might not be completed since today and tomorrow are public holidays.

In a circular to delegates, Mudzuri said the problems had been compounded by confusing messages regarding the venue.

“It is quite disturbing to note that the EOC has been thrown into confusion by a cocktail of mis-endeavours or  unfortunate circumstances,” Mudzuri said.

“There are confusing messages on the venue or venues for the congress.

“As things stand, there is no money for congress as the US$60 000 meant for the party was fraudulently moved from the party’s account without the express approval of the treasurer and the standing committee.

“The voters roll had not been finalised up to 17:30hours today (yesterday),” he said.

Mudzuri said he was trying to ensure that there was a free, fair and transparent congress in line with the tenets of democracy.

“I would like to urge all eligible delegates wishing to see the survival of this great movement we started in 1999 to achieve all its set objectives to sacrifice and ensure that they come out  to cast their votes on December 27 whatever venue is finally agreed upon.

“We should never accept corrupt and abusive behaviour that we have blamed Zanu PF for over the years. All the missing money must be recovered and accounted for without delay,” he added.

Polls were postponed last weekend after interim party leader Thokozani Khupe’s backers raised concern over alleged attempts by secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora to manipulate the roll.

But Mudzuri said the party was clear that only members of the 2014 structures would vote.

Another candidate, Morgen Komichi said the congress would be held at HICC, contrary to claims by some party members on social media that it would be decentralised.

“The EOC is on, and it will be held at a single venue at the HICC. The persons that will attend are those from the 2014 structures as they are the legitimate delegates to vote,” Komichi said.

“That has been abandoned because decentralised elections are prone to violence and they are very difficult to manage. What we want is to have the whole leadership to be there at the same venue and in the event of any problem, it can be addressed quickly,” he said.

Komichi cited the shambolic voters roll as the cause of the postponement of the congress that was set for December 19.

“We need to be careful this time around that this will not affect us anymore and so we want the leadership there. While we are candidates, we also have the responsibility as leaders to make sure that the party ensures a peaceful process,” he said.

Meanwhile, the MDC Alliance issued a statement yesterday saying its members that were in the 2014 party structures should not attend the congress, adding that it was a Zanu PF charade.

“All genuine MDC supporters that were in the MDC-T structures when our late president Morgan Tsvangirai passed on are advised to stay away from this Zanu PF charade at the HICC. For the record, Tsvangirai was constitutionally replaced by president Nelson Chamisa and before he passed on, he left president Chamisa in charge of MDC Alliance.

“Zanu PF has now booked this outfit at the HICC and has even provided it with the Zimbabwe Republic Police ‘to maintain law and order’, but in reality they are there to ensure that their project of running an opposition party in Zimbabwe succeeds,” MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende said.

He alleged that there were over 50 opposition parties in the country that were created by State agents and were being controlled by the military intelligence.

“The MDC Alliance remains one of the few opposition parties genuinely fighting for a people’s government. We must not waste time with sideshows, but remain focused on our goal of achieving a truly democratic developmental State in Zimbabwe. 2021 is

the year of people’s action using our constitutionally guaranteed rights.  We must organise ourselves and fight for a Zimbabwe that we want,” Hwende said.
