Correspondent

POLICE in Beitbridge yesterday arrested two suspected armed robbers after a brief exchange of gunfire.

The suspects, Admire Songora popularly known as Pele Pele, and Brian Moto also popularly known as Bruda, were nabbed soon after they had robbed a female border jumper of R15 000 near the PaGomo Lodge.

“The two notorious robbers have been terrorising Beitbridge residents and have been robbing, assaulting and raping women, especially those illegally crossing the border,” the Beitbridge police posted on their social media Twitter page.

“They were arrested yesterday evening after robbing a woman at PaGomo Lodge of R15 000. She was on her way to South Africa,” they said.

The Beitbridge police posted the images of the robbery suspects on social media after they were nabbed.

They were later thrown into police cells.

Panic At ZANU PF Headquarters As Senior Officials Test Positive For Coronavirus

PANIC has gripped the ruling Zanu PF party after two senior party officials on Sunday tested positive for COVID-19 with confirmed cases likely to go up as results of mass tests done recently continue to pour in.

Zanu PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu and the party’s director for Information Tafadzwa Mugwadi are now in isolation at home together with affected members of their respective families.

The Zanu PF COVID-19 scare comes as Zimbabwe has recorded 291 deaths with 10 of them having been recorded on Saturday only. Ministry of Health and Child Care COVID-19 statistics yesterday showed that there are 10 718 cases of the virus that have been recorded throughout the country.

However, the country has also recorded 8 880 recoveries.

The party’s secretary for Health David Parirenyatwa yesterday told NewsDay in an interview that the party was now on high alert, adding that all measures were being put in place to curb the further spread of the deadly virus at their headquarters situated in Harare, which also houses a number of party bigwigs and staff. The Zanu PF headquarters also plays host to several party meetings.

“What we did last time was to screen people and the results are coming in batches and all those who have been found to be positive have been asked to go into

self-isolation and to come back after the prescribed date,” Parirenyatwa said without confirming the actual number of those affected.

“When we started the COVID-19 tests as a party, the first batch had five cases but that was about two months ago. So we are now going symptomatically and we check on anyone who would have developed the symptoms. The first time, we did a mass test but now we are following the national policy and that is what we are doing,” he said.

Parirenyatwa said the party was putting on a lot of measures to reduce the spread of the virus that has already claimed millions of lives internationally.

“We are putting a lot of measures now; we screen people at the gate, we do temperature checks and all the normal routine. We are intensifying that and even in our lifts, we have put COVID-19 measures, and as people get into other offices we make sure prevention protocols are observed,” he said.

Mugwadi yesterday took to microblogging site Twitter to announce that he was self-isolating at home and is adhering to all medical tips to suppress the virus.

“I will adhere to every medical tip as I battle this pandemic with my family,” Mugwadi wrote on his social media account.

Acting Zanu PF spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa was not immediately available to comment on the matter.

However, workers at the ruling party headquarters who spoke on condition of anonymity said there were fears that quite a number of people at the party offices could have contracted COVID-19.

Most of the officials work from the building and were feared to have been in close contact with the infected. To make matters worse, they were currently reportedly deployed across the country for the party district co-ordinating committee (DCC) elections, whereas according to protocol, they should be in self-isolation.

Over the weekend, Independent Norton Member of Parliament Temba Mliswa also confirmed that his sister, a Zanu PF official and Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs minister Mary Mliswa-Chikoka, had been battling COVID-19 in self isolation.

Mliswa said she was now well after receiving treatment in Harare.

“I can proudly declare she is a COVID-19 survivor,” he said.

Government and the police recently warned Zimbabweans of complacency, and advised the nation to observe all COVID-19 regulations, which include masking up and regular hand washing, as well as social distancing amid reports that there was a second wave of the pandemic that may hit the world and was deadlier.

Internationally, several countries have gone on a second lockdown period due to the second wave of COVID-19.

Despite the warnings of the second deadly wave of the virus, last week, senior Zanu PF officials set tongues wagging after pictures went viral of them feasting during Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa’s 60th birthday party without facemasks and with no social distancing being observed.

But Mutsvangwa defended the stance saying that all COVID 19 protocols were observed at the party, including testing of the participants.

The senior officials that attended Mutsvangwa’s birthday bash included ministers and government bureaucrats.

Cases of COVID-19 have spiked in Zimbabwe, particularly Harare and Bulawayo.

Cont Mhlanga Wants 13 Heifers Each From All Those Who Said His Keona TV Project Is Associated With ZANU PF

Cont Mhlanga

KeYona TV chairperson, Cont Mhlanga is fuming and has threatened to sue all those who made claims on social media that their television station was awarded a licence because of his affiliation to Zanu-PF, saying they owe him 13 heifers each as these are false claims.

When the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe (BAZ) announced that KeYona TV was among six entities that were awarded free to air national television licences last month, there was jubilation in some quarters. However, social media was awash with reports and conspiracy theories with some claiming that those who had been given the green light to operate had links to the ruling party and Government.

Other stations that were given a licence are Zimpapers Television Network, Rusununguko Media (Pvt) Ltd trading as NRTV, Jester Media trading as 3K TV, Acacia Media Group trading as Kumba TV and Channel Dzimbahwe trading as Channel D.

Mhlanga is pained by such claims and wants those who made them to come forward within the next 30 days with evidence that they are true or face a lawsuit.

“The next 30 days (starting from Sunday 6th of December, 2020) are crucial, therefore those with proof that we’re linked with Zanu-PF should come forward and present it to me and the whole nation.

“If the 30 days lapse, all those who wrote and distributed the information will be served with court papers and they will have to incur all legal costs,” said Mhlanga in a statement he issued on Sunday.

“Because of the seriousness of these unfounded claims, as a Ndebele, I expect three heifers to clear my name, five to clear the Amakhosi name and another five heifers to clear KeYona TV.”

A disappointed Mhlanga said instead of being excited about realising his dream of building a reputable television station, he is faced with mudslinging. He said those claiming their TV station was favoured clearly have no idea of the amount of work he has put into this project over the years.

“We however, haven’t received any support in content creation input, supply or funding, but only mudslinging. I was deeply pained to learn that the work, dedication, sacrifices and content I created over the past 40 years of my life is not my intellectual property, but is attributed to Zanu-PF.

“I looked to the whole of Mthwakazi to celebrate and walk this journey with us, but it’s been marred with unfounded allegations that seek to undermine my hard work.”

Explaining why they had decided to go the legal route with this matter, Mhlanga said: “This (pending lawsuit) is a decision taken to ensure that KeYona TV is credited to its rightful owners as we fight to start airing in the near future.”

The television guru went on to ask people to help identify those who were claiming that KeYona TV was awarded because of his connections to Zanu-PF and Government.

“I appeal to you Mthwakazi to help identify the peddlers of all these allegations. It’s my hope that they have tangible proof that will stand in the court of law supporting the claims spewed on social media platforms about Amakhosi, KeYona TV and my persona,” said Mhlanga.

Meanwhile, KeYona TV is set to reveal their team next year at a cocktail that will be held in Bulawayo.

“Successful presenters, scriptwriters, independent producers and the channel’s content management team will be unveiled at a luncheon to be held at Amakhosi studios on the 30th of January, 2021 from midday to 3pm. This comes after the channel successfully hosted its inaugural auditions this past week drawing in a crowd of 475 hopefuls,” the TV station said a statement.

Not Leading By Example, Six Kwekwe Junior Councillors Impregnated By Gold Panners

State Media

Pregnant school girl… file

SIX female juveniles – three below the age of 15 – who were part of the Kwekwe Junior Council were reportedly impregnated or eloped with gold panners during the Covid-19 induced lockdown.

The shocking stats were revealed during a Zimbabwe National Council for Welfare of Children (ZNCWC) annual convention recently.

Kwekwe District has a total of 56 junior councillors from Kwekwe City, Zibagwe Rural District Council and Redcliff Municipality. Zibagwe RDC, which caters for the rural part was the worst affected.

Zibagwe RDC chief executive officer, Mr Farayi Machaya, said concerted effort was needed in addressing abuse of underage girls.

“We are in the process of replacing the councillors and our officials are taking necessary steps to ensure that they are replaced. It is worrying that they are supposed to be role models themselves but the worst then happens to them,” he said.

“It is a touching development that everyone should work in trying to address.”

Ward 13 junior councillor Precious Hove said it was worrying that early marriages were not sparing anyone including her colleagues.

She said relevant authorities including officials from council, victim friendly unit, district development coordinator’s office and Childline among others, made follow ups on the six junior councillors and ascertained the sad development.

Clr Hove said most of her juvenile colleagues fell victim to gold panners who lured them with money.

“We have a huge challenge here in the district due to illegal gold panners who lure young girls with money and they end up falling pregnant or even eloping with the men as they think they might earn a living with them,” she said.

ZNCWC board chair, Dr Lamiel Phiri said the development was worrying, adding that gold panners should be educated.

“Can you imagine losing six junior councillors, this is very bad. This goes on to show how early marriages have wreaked havoc in the country. We hear stories of gold panners ‘swiping’ young girls for a certain fee, I never thought it was serious. I suggest that relevant authorities engage these gold panners and educate them against swiping young girls,” said Dr Phiri.

ZNCWC director, Dr Taylor Nyanhete, said parents should play a leading role in educating their own children on sexual reproductive issues.

“Let us engage our children as a society and not wait for teachers to do that. Let us take responsibility for sexual reproductive education for our children as parents. The home environment is always the best for such education. It takes the whole society to raise a child,” said Dr Nyanhete.

Mnangagwa To Officially Confer Vic Falls City Status

President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Vic Falls recently

Victoria Falls becomes the City of Victoria Falls tomorrow, with President Mnangagwa expected to formally confer the new status at a ceremony where he will also be granted the Freedom of the City, the highest civic honour in recognition of his contribution to the town’s growth.

It will be the first such honour to be given to anyone by the municipality in the history of the town and the first for President Mnangagwa as Head of State.

While city status grants no extra powers not already possessed by a municipality, it is an honour, establishes precedence, and recognises that a municipality has greater national importance than being a local authority in a particular area.

Victoria Falls becomes the first city in Matabeleland North, and only the second after Bulawayo in the three western provinces in Zimbabwe.

The new status recognises its national, and global, importance as the capital and hinge of Zimbabwe’s tourism industry, as well as putting it on an equal footing with its older twin across the river, Livingstone.

The city status is a milestone and prestigious achievement for Victoria Falls, which becomes the first municipality to be upgraded by the Second Republic, gives it more name recognition for investors, and opens opportunities for twinning relationships with other cities around the world.

In line with the growing links as the whole area becomes a single international destination, the new city has invited guests from the city councils of Livingstone and Francistown in Botswana, as well as the municipal council of Kasana in Botswana, the town just up the Zambezi from the Falls.

Victoria Falls town clerk, Mr Ronnie Dube, said Victoria Falls and Livingstone, Zambia’s second largest city, share similar backgrounds not only as part of former colonial Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, but also because people found on either side of the Zambezi River are from the same cultural backgrounds.

Victoria Falls has a twinning relationship with Botswana’s second largest city, Francistown, which dates back to about four years ago while Kasane is a key tourism town about 82km from Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe.

The city fathers and residents are excited about the development which they believe will help expand industry and create more jobs for the town, whose economy was solely dependent on tourism.

Said Mr Dube: “We have invited Livingstone, Kasane and Francistown municipalities. We have invited them as our neighbours while we have a twinning relationship with Francistown.”

Victoria Falls mayor, Somveli Dlamini, said preparations were at an advanced stage.

“We are ready for the function and a lot of preparatory work has been done including securing the venue. All logistics are being worked on and invitations have been sent out,” he said.

Two months ago, Parliament approved that Victoria Falls be granted city status after recommendation by a commission set by Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo, about three years ago.

This comes as Government has shown commitment to transform the province, particularly Victoria Falls, which was designated a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) with special focus on tourism.

Government wants to make Victoria Falls its conferencing capital and plans to build a multi-purpose convention centre with top-notch facilities such as five-star hotels, a medical centre, a university, a Zimbabwe Defence Forces camp and sporting facilities.

There are plans through the development plan, to improve infrastructure in the town to match world tourism destination standards as well as development the Victoria Falls-Hwange-Binga SEZ comprising Masue and Batoka satellite towns, Hwange, Mlibizi, Binga and Sijalila, along the Zambezi corridor.

Government recently launched the Victoria Falls Stock Exchange (VFEX), which is also expected to lure investors.

The 2012 census says Victoria Falls has 33 000 people, but it is widely thought that the population has grown to about 40 000.

Nick Mangwana Wants Govt To Throw In More Money To Fund State Media

State Media

Nick Mangwana

Permanent Secretary for Information, Media and Broadcasting Services Mr Nick Mangwana has acknowledged Government’s efforts to increase the ministry’s budget from the initial cap of $851 million to $1,4 billion, but told a Parliamentary committee yesterday that more was still needed to finalise the digitisation of all television and broadcasting services to reach every home.

Appearing before the Portfolio Committee on Information, Media and Broadcasting Services he said the budget was still below the $3,7 billion the Ministry wanted next year to fulfil its mandate to disseminate information to every corner of the country.

Entities like the Broadcasting Authority of Zimbabwe, Transmedia, ZBC, New Ziana and the Zimbabwe Film and Television School of Southern Africa fall under the Ministry of Information, Media and Broadcasting Services.

Mr Mangwana said BAZ, which is leading the digitisation of television transmission, had been allocated $684 million from a bid of $1,6 billion, which would delay the digitisation of transmission so signals reach every homestead in the country.

The digitisation started in 2015 and BAZ has so far received US$49,2 million out of the initial US$175 budget for the project with only 18 transmitters out of 48 stations needed countrywide being digitised.

The six new televisions recently licensed would only be able to cover 38 percent of the country when they open.

On Transmedia he said the organisation had been allocated $90 million after making a bid of $542, million which would also affect its ability to capacitate the community radio stations that will be licensed soon. The company was not allocated money to construct a new headquarters despite engineers condemning the present building.

Mr Mangwana, however, thanked Government for allocating a grant to ZBC for the first time in 20 years.

“For nearly 20 years ZBC was never funded from the fiscus and for this year they got a grant and support from the fiscus,” he said.

Mr Mangwana told the committee that the public broadcaster has indicated that it would use the money to pay off its creditors that include content producers and statutory bodies like Zimra and NSSA.

Cross Border Traders Assured Covid-19 Testing At US$15

Killer Zivhu

Cross border traders have received a huge relief following an agreement between the Cross Border Traders Association and Kei Laboratories for them to access Covid-19 tests at a concessionary rate.

While other local laboratories charge up to US$60 for such a test, Kei Laboratories will charge US$15 for cross border traders, making it much easier for them to afford the service.

Cross border traders have been stranded since the major borders opened last week, as they could not afford the Covid-19 tests that will enable them to show border officials a positive result before they are allowed out.

The Cross Border Traders Association is working with more than 200 medical doctors across the country who will collect samples from the members and send them to Kei Laboratories in Bulawayo for testing.

Certificates will be issued before one embarks on the journey outside the country and upon return, they will be tested, and this time they will only pay US$10 since they will not get a certificate, but only their results.

Addressing the media in Harare yesterday, Cross Border Traders Association president Mr Killer Zivhu said the initiative came as a relief to cross border traders who had been struggling to raise funds for Covid-19 tests.

“The biggest challenge is that the PCR test is beyond the reach of an ordinary person, let alone a cross border trader,” he said. “To make matters worse, our people have been idle for the past nine months, they have not been operating, and most of them are bankrupt.

“Now, we have entered into an agreement with Kei Laboratories that they test every Cross Border Traders Association member at US$15 or R170 on going out of Zimbabwe, and US$10 on coming back. This comes as boost to our members.”

Mr Zivhu said the association was discouraging the setting up of laboratories at border posts, as people should only travel to the border when they know their status.

“The reason we discourage this is because one can travel from as far as Murehwa to Beitbridge not knowing that they are Covid-19 positive,” he said. “They will be spreading the virus all the way to the border.

“So we encourage that people must be tested at their places and only travel after knowing their status, and they can actually collect the certificates at the border, but having been informed of their status before travelling.”

It’s Over For Pogba At Manchester United -Agent

MINO RAIOLA has sensationally declared Paul Pogba’s Manchester United career over.

The timing of the agent’s bombshell could not be worse for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side on the eve of a do-or-die Champions League clash with RB Leipzig.

Raiola told Tuttosport: ‘I can say that it’s over for Paul Pogba at Manchester United.’

Pogba’s future has been the subject of much speculation for months but he remained at Old Trafford in the extended summer transfer window.

He also looked back to somewhere near the level he is capable of producing in the comeback win against West Ham on Saturday, contributing with a superb goal.

But now Raiola has thrown an enormous spanner in the works for the club and also, potentially his player.

His short statement could have massive ramifications and whip up a frenzy of distraction at precisely the point Solskjaer needs absolute focus on the task at hand.

United require at least a draw against RB Leipzig in Germany tonight to guarantee a place in the knockout stages.

And the fallout from Raiola’s statement is likely to rumble on ahead of their crunch derby clash with Manchester City on Saturday.

On Saturday, Italian outlet Corriere dello Sport reported that a ‘divorce’ is on the way between United and Pogba and that it was just a matter of Raiola finding the right offer.

Pogba is still United’s record signing at £89million but has never been shy about teasing a move away from the club he left as an academy star for Juventus before returning to much fanfare.-Chronicle

HIV Prevalence Rate Drops

HIV prevalence in Zimbabwe has gone down in all provinces in the last four years owing to good programming and adherence to antiretroviral therapy, amid reports that the country records approximately 31 000 new cases annually.

The latest Zimbabwe Population-based HIV Impact Assessment (ZIMPHIA) shows that compared to the last study conducted in 2016, all provinces have recorded a decline in HIV prevalence.

The ZIMPHIA study is a population household survey led by the Health and Child Care Ministry working in collaboration with the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (ZIMSTAT), National Aids Council (NAC), and ICAP at the Columbia University.

Matabeleland South still accounts for the majority of HIV cases in Zimbabwe with 17,6 percent prevalence down from 21,7 percent in 2016.

According to the survey, Matabeleland North and Bulawayo still have the highest prevalence as well at 14,9 and 14 percent respectively. Both provinces had recorded 19,5 percent and 17,9 percent previously.

Midlands has a HIV prevalence of 13,4 down from 13,5, Masvingo has 13 percent down from 14,5 percent while Harare’s prevalence now stands at 12,6 from 13,7 in 2016. Manicaland still has the lowest prevalence rate in the country at 10,2 percent down from 11 while Mashonaland Central has maintained 13 percent in both surveys.

Mashonaland East on the other hand has a 12,4 percent prevalence down from 13,5 while Mashonaland West stands at 12,8 from 12,3 percent in 2016.

“Prevalence of HIV among adults in Zimbabwe was 12,9 percent, which corresponds to approximately 1 225 000 adults living with HIV. The HIV prevalence was 15,3 percent among women and 10,2 percent among men,” read the ZIMPHIA report.

“The annual incidence of HIV among adults aged 15 years and older in Zimbabwe was 0,38 percent, which corresponds to approximately 31 000 new cases of HIV per year among adults. HIV incidence was 0,54 percent among women and 0,20 percent among men.”

According to ZIMPHIA, the country had achieved milestones in meeting the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/Aids (UNAIDS) 90-90-90 targets with the aim that by 2020, 90 percent of all people living with HIV would know their HIV status; 90 percent of all people with diagnosed HIV infection would receive sustained ART; and 90 percent of all people receiving ART would have viral load suppression.

Just like other heavily burdened countries, Zimbabwe, which has the fifth highest HIV prevalence at 12,9 percent in Africa, is working towards reaching the 2020 goals.

“About 86,8 percent of all adults living with HIV aged 15 years and older are aware of their HIV status. Individuals are classified as aware if they reported their HIV-positive status or had a detectable antiretroviral (ARV) in their blood,” read the statement. Of the adults diagnosed with HIV in Zimbabwe 97 percent are on ART.

“Among adults who were on ART, 90,3 percent have suppressed viral loads.”

Zimbabwe has one of the highest HIV prevalence and unprotected heterosexual sex continues to be the main transmission route for new infections.-Chronicle

Ndiraya Condemns Own Players

AFTER watching his Under-20 national side suffering a startling 0-2 loss to Mozambique in the Cosafa Championships in South Africa on Sunday, coach Tonderai Ndiraya condemned his players for lacking basic football techniques.

The defeat left the Young Warriors virtually out of the competition, as they have to beat Lesotho by at least eight goals and hope South Africa lose to Mozambique today for them to advance to the next stage.

The local football fraternity somehow finds it difficult to accept losing to countries they feel are minnows, forgetting that these countries are heavily investing in player development, whilst Zimbabwe’s junior structures are dormant.

There is no denying that it was always going to be a tall order to get the best out of players that have been in lockdown for the whole season and had not seen any action until they landed in Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa last week.

However, what seemed to baffle Ndiraya is that most players attached to Premier Soccer League clubs lack basic football skills.

Canada-based youth coach Collin Nyabadza agreed with Ndiraya’s assessment that local youth teams can’t match their regional counterparts due to different approaches in grassroots development.

“In a way, I agree with coach Ndiraya. We have serious problems with our game at junior level. We are not teaching kids basic soccer skills properly. At youth level, our emphasis should be on basic techniques such as passing, ball control, shooting and dribbling, and not tactics,” said Nyabadza.

“Which explains why you are bound to find players in our PSL struggling to pass or control the ball. At youth level, winning should not be our top priority. Rather the priority should be on development. But because in Zimbabwe we prioritise winning over player development, we end up age cheating because most of our youth coaches want to win at all costs,” he said.-Chronicle

MARRY’s HEALTH LATEST: ‘Shingi Kaondera’ Publishes Touching Message Praying For Her.

By A Correspondent | For years, many Zimbabweans have continued alleging that the husband is bitter over their breakup which led to Gen Constantino Chiwenga taking over his wife, but a Facebook account named after Marry Chiwenga’s ex hubby, Shingi Kaondera on Monday evening posted a heartfelt message praising the woman.

It announced saying she is stronger than any disease or court case, the latter which is being used to abuse her.

The development comes after Marry Mubaiwa (nee)’s wounded hands were revealed in pictures late last week, her bank account was frozen by the government, at a time when on Sunday Constantino Chiwenga through his aide speaking to ZimEye.com bullied her saying unlike her, he will never go hungry because, “inini ndinogara nekatundu kangu kanenge kakakwana”- FULL INTERVIEW ON ZIMEYE.COM

Marry Mubaiwa was injured in the White City bombing back in June 2018, an incident that got her hospitalised.

While her husband received high class medical treatment abroad in South Africa and thereafter in China, Marry neglected her own health chosing to spend time looking after her husband travelling with him and taking care of him in hospitals.

He would later after Bouncing Back having recovered begin to accuse her of trying to kill him inside a hospital in South Africa. Constantino Chiwenga opened a prosecution against Marry on baseless allegations saying the incident happened in a hospital in South Africa 4 months before in 2019.

While the case has remained hanging for more than a year to date without any admissible evidence whatsoever, her husband’s own relative, serving as a maid, has laid charges of allegedly assaulting her (the maid) at a school.

It is because of all these charges that Marry has been out on remand, only freed on bail, and her passport has been seized.

On Monday evening, Shingi Kaondera dispelled the rumour that he is bitter over the couple’s breakup which led to the military general taking over his wife.

He posted a picture of the couple while saying, ” May we all pray for Mary, may God revive her spirit, may she live to see, the wedding of our 1st dawta Destiny, I believe in u

“He was found cooking the boy’s head in a kitchen hut, while the remaining parts of the body were recovered in a shallow pool, wrapped in a mosquito net.

“Investigations are underway.”

According to sources, the incident occurred when the boy, who was in Grade 2 at Matova Primary School, sought shelter from the heavy rains at his uncle’s home on Friday.

The suspect is alleged to have killed the boy before cutting off his head.

MDC Alliance Denounces Harassment Of Harare Metropolitan Councillors

Yesterday , all Chitungwiza councilors and staffers who were attending ordinary full council were arrested. They were released without charge in the evening.

A couple of weeks ago, the Mayor of Chitungwiza was arrested on spurious charges and held in cells for more than 4 days . He was eventually granted bail one of whose conditions was to bar him from setting foot on council premises.

At the same time, the deputy Mayor and four other councilors were recalled and arrested on fabricated charges of criminal abuse of office.

In Harare, the same pattern of events , was being witnessed. At a full council, all councillors were arrested and released without charges. The Mayor, Advocate Mafume was arrested and is being held in cells and repeatedly being denied bail.

In the meantime, members of staff also got arrested for criminal abuse of office. Even a director who got reinstated a week earlier was arrested for criminal abuse of office.

All what is happening in the Harare Metropolitan councils is a sad attack not only local governance but also on the will of the people who voted for the MDC Alliance councilors. We know that ED and Zanu Pf are angry that the people of Harare have consistently rejected them and it is for this reason that they are being punished.

Local government in Harare has been rendered dis functional through the twin strategy of illegal recalls and unnecessary arrests. ED and Zanu Pf are engineering failure in the local authorities with the hope that they can cause the people of Harare to be angry with the MDC Alliance. The effects of these choreographed activities will be felt for a very long time to come.

We call upon , The Provincial Minister, Mr Chidawu and his Provincial Coordinator, Mr Muguti who are the key drivers of the attack on councils to place people first ahead of political and personal economic opportunity .

The people of Harare Metropolitan deserve better, they want superior services , They demand that government stops interfering with the work of elected councils.

Woman Beds Own Brother After Using “Love Charm”

Tinashe Sambiri|
A Mberengwa sex worker known as “Sisi Tsvigiri” has claimed she had sex with her blood brother after using love charms.

Sisi Tsvigiri, whose real name is Eugenia Chirevai Chiwara, was caught in bed with her own brother last week.

Family sources said she then drank poison in an attempt to take her own life following the incident.

Sisi Tsvigiri confessed that she was given love charms by controversial Masvingo preacher Isaac Makomichi.

“Because of poverty I went to Makomichi to seek the love charm and he gave me a substance to rub on my hands and said if I shake hands with someone then that person will automatically fall in love with me and do everything I want.

Sometimes I forget that I should not shake hands with my relatives.

I am regreting and I am willing to revisit Makomichi so that he can reverse the love charm,” said Eugenia.

Church leaders in Masvingo say Makomichi’s herb is evil because it is a tool that is being used to collect money through the back door.

A defiant Makomichi blamed Eugenia for the mistake she made.

Makomichi is under pressure to disclose the source of his love charm.

Diaspora, Test Your Power!

Fred Nyamhunga

By Fred Nyamhunga | Zimbabwe’s human rights are shocking, appalling, and downright embarrassing. The country’s image is now associated with police brutality, the country’s military unashamedly shooting its citizens in broad daylight in the full glare of international cameras, beating and raping women even female Members of Parliament. From 1890 to the present-day the country has been in perpetual conflict with itself.
Tremendous sacrifices have been made by many to halt the pillaging of the country’s resources by the few elite. However, with each election since 1980, the nation slides further into the abyss, the list of carnage grows longer and propaganda reaches fever pitch. The big question, what will bring lasting change for the majority of jobless, poverty-stricken masses?
Maybe, the power lies with those who don’t reside there anymore – the Diaspora. Yes, the Diaspora don’t have a vote that could change anything, but they can influence it!
It is no disputed that Diaspora remittances approximate US$1billion per annum. That’s a lot of dough for a desperate regime! And a lot of latent power for those who hold it but don’t how effective it can be! Have you ever wondered what would happen if this forgotten constituency decided to use their vote by withholding their remittances for three to six months?
I can see folks throwing stones at me already. Wait! Hear me out. The argument will be that we are hurting those its meant to help. Isn’t that the same argument used in the sanctions debate?
Yes, agreed. Remittances are a lifeblood for the majority of families and relatives who have been impoverished by their masters. But the remittances have the unintended benefit of being the government’s lifeline too! Look at how the foreign exchange rules have changed each time the nation’s budget explodes. Listen to the shrills from those quarters, and you will know when you hit a nerve.

Undoubtedly, short term suffering for long term gain should be a wise choice. What hasn’t been tried? “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. Nothing changes if nothing changes. Inaction perpetuates pain. Evil spreads in darkness.
It won’t be long before #holdbackyourdollar becomes a rallying call in the Diaspora unless something changes

Have you ever heard the story of Rosa Parks? She helped spark the civil rights movement in the United States when she refused to give up her seat to a white man on a Montgomery, Alabama bus in 1955. She had had enough of being degraded by a system she daily toiled to preserve. That simple decision to claim her deserved right snowballed and unleashed the civil rights movements that ushered in new hope and light for the black.
A quick history lesson. At that time in the United States, segregation was law, so the front of a Montgomery bus was reserved for white passengers and the seats behind them for black citizens. On Thursday, December 1, 1955, the 42-year-old Rosa Parks was commuting when a white man had no seat because all the seats in the designated “white” section were taken. The driver told the black people seated in the first row of the “coloured” section to give up their seats for the white man. Three black people gave up their seats with the exception of Rosa Parks. Of course, she was arrested and harassed, but her actions were a game-changer. This act of defiance inspired the leaders of the local black community which immediately swung into action and organized the now-famous Montgomery Bus Boycott led by a young Rev. Dr Martin Luther King Jr.
The day the Diaspora recognizes the power in his/her hands (#holdbackyourdollar) and decides to use it en mass in exchange for proper governance and human rights then the ground will shake
Never underestimate the power in your hands. I dare you!

What are we waiting for? If not now, then when.

Chelsea Are Favorites To Win League Title – Klopp

High-flying Chelsea are favorites to win the 2020/21 Premier League title, claims Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.

The German believes Frank Lampard’s charges, who are unbeaten in nine games and the only team to go for such a number of games without defeat, have been aided by their spending on new signings, which gives them a ‘massive advantage’.

“If I watch football games at the moment then Chelsea, for me, look like favourites,” Klopp said. “They have the biggest squad, great players playing well together after a rusty start – and they are full on,” he told Sky Sports ahead of Liverpool’s meeting with Wolves.

“They have unbelievable opportunities to change in games and make changes from one game to the other – so that is it,” he added.

Chelsea comfortably saw off Leeds United at Stamford Bridge thanks to goals from Olivier Giroud, Kate Zouma, and Christian Pulisic to go top of the table.-Soccer 24

Chinamasa “Instructs” Police To Arrest Hon Biti

Tinashe Sambiri |Zanu PF spokesperson, Patrick Chinamasa instructed the police to arrest and detain MDC Alliance vice president, Hon Tendai Biti, it has emerged.

There are claims that Hon Biti threatened Russian national Tatiana Aleshina.

Advocate Mahere argued Chinamasa literally ordered the police to arrest Hon Biti.

“Zanu PF spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa said the police should arrest Hon Biti.

This suggests that the police received instructions from the Zanu PF spokesperson.

Mr Nick Mangwana also ordered the police to arrest Hon Biti.

When Hon Biti was in police custody, he was denied food.He was also exposed to Coronavirus because the police officers were not wearing face masks. There were no sanitizers at the police station,” said Advocate Mahere.

“ZANU PF Will Split In 2023,”

Zanu Pf

Former ZANU PF politburo member, Temba Mliswa has predicted that the ruling party’s recent chaotic District Coordinating Committee (DCC) elections will trigger or enhance divisions. The Norton legislator (independent) said the party was likely to split in 2023, the year scheduled for the next harmonised elections. Below is Mliswa’s full Twitter thread.

Observations of a Political Commentator….

The @ZANUPF_Official DCC elections began from a problematic position. Structures weren’t in place, no cell/branch elections were conducted.

The DCCs were marred by impositions & accusations of anti-ED (anti-President Emmerson Mnangagwa), G40, Gamatox taunts were rife instead of convincing the people what one has to offer. People simply want to know what candidates will do to turn around the economy and to address their welfare.

The fissures are apparent& come 2023 this will be disastrous for the party. How do you call provinces people’s provinces when all the Chairs save for Chadzamira & maybe Matiza weren’t elected? So you have a scenario where unelected Chairpersons appoint their own unelected persons who go on to impose people not in structures. It’s a horror!! I’d hate to be a @ZANUPF_Official leader in such a fiasco where gossiping & rumourmongering rule the day. You can never take somebody’s vote away from them. They’ll keep it with them to your detriment.
More trouble and purging lies ahead & come 2023 they’ll be a split. In an area of 120 voters where only 20 vote can you say the will of the people has been encompassed? What about the other 100? The best thing @ZANUPF_Official can do is to nullify these elections & restructure.

The restructuring may commence from January 2021 beginning with the Cells then the Branches in February followed by District elections in March and Provincial in April, Central Committee in May with the Politburo being subsequently formed. That would be my advice.

For now, this is the worst crop of politicians I’ve seen in ZANU-PF, no ideology, nothing. What happened to the school of ideology or is just a facade? The current people are totally devoid of orientation & contradict themselves… it’s a farce!

Human Rights Group Calls For End Of S3x Testing On Female Athletes

Castor Semenya

With the rescheduled Tokyo Olympics approaching in July, Human Rights Watch on Friday demanded that track and field officials halt sex testing of female athletes, describing the practice of measuring and restricting their natural testosterone levels as abusive and harmful.

Sex testing has been a deeply contentious issue in sports for decades, but the dispute has been heightened since 2018, when track and field’s world governing body instituted its latest rules regarding intersex athletes like Caster Semenya of South Africa, a two-time Olympic champion runner at 800 meters. The sport’s regulations have inflamed debates about biological sex, gender identity and fair play.

Semenya and others who have what are called differences of sexual development, or DSDs, are required to suppress naturally elevated testosterone levels — through hormonal therapy or surgery — before competing internationally in women’s running races at distances from the quarter mile to the mile.

World Athletics, track and field’s governing body, acknowledges that the restrictions are discriminatory, but says they are necessary to ensure a level playing field.

Semenya, who identifies as a woman and has declined to undergo testosterone suppression, has lost appeals before the Court of Arbitration for Sport, which is based in Switzerland, and the Swiss Supreme Court. Last month, her lawyers said she would take her case to the European Court of Human Rights, though it is unclear if any decision can be reached before the Tokyo Games, scheduled to start on July 23. Otherwise, Semenya (29) has suggested she will try to run the 200m, an event free of the recently introduced testosterone restrictions, at the Olympics.

In a 120-page report, the New York-based Human Rights Watch amplified with athletes’ voices what critics of the current testosterone regulations have long argued: that they are medically unnecessary and humiliating; encourage coerced medical intervention; can result in physical and psychological injury and the loss of careers; violate fundamental rights to privacy, dignity, health, non-discrimination and employment; and adhere to standards of femininity that are racially biased, disproportionately affecting women of color from Africa, Asia, Latin America and Oceania.

“Whether it is hormone therapy or surgery, why should a perfectly healthy woman agree to do so to compete in sports?” Francine Niyonsaba of Burundi in East Africa said in an email to The New York Times. She finished second to Semenya in the 800 at the 2016 Olympics and is also affected by the testosterone regulations.

Like Semenya, Niyonsaba has refused to undergo hormone suppression and is now training to run the 5 000 metres, a distance at which the biological restrictions do not apply.

“They treat us as if we are cheats,” Niyonsaba said. “We deserve to be respected as athletes, as champions.”

The report was based on interviews last year with 13 female athletes from African and Asian countries, as well as input from lawyers, doctors, academics and medical ethicists. Annet Negesa, an intersex middle-distance runner from Uganda, told researchers that an operation to remove her internal testes was performed in 2012 without her consent.

The operation, she said, left her battling headaches and achy joints and ruined her career. –

MDC Alliance Youth Assembly Official To Appear In Court Tomorrow

Gilbert Mutubuki

Our MDCA Masvingo Youth Assembly Secretary , Councillor Gilbert Mutubuki will be appearing at Triangle Magistrate Court tommorrow. Tuesday 8 December.

He is charged of inciting public violence in a case where he confronted the war veterans over unfair distribution of land last year. He resolutely stood by ordinary landless Zimbabweans who were sidelined by greedy war veterans who grab land for their own benefit and on partisan lines.

We encourage all those that are free to flock the courts in solidarity with our leader, who is being persecuted for standing by the poor’s side.

Impunity, Chaos Costs Lives in Gold Mining Sector

AllAfrica

A collapsed informal mining shaft

On November 15, artisanal miners were buried alive in mine shafts by a Chinese company, which was sub-contracted by a Belarusian mining company at Premier Estates on the outskirts of Mutare.

So far, bodies of only two artisanal miners have been retrieved while an unknown number remains unaccounted for. Although the figures are disputed, artisanal miners allege that there are 10 or more bodies still buried underground. The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says they received three reports of missing persons and investigations are in progress, although they seem to doubt that there could be any bodies remaining. The artisanal miners were suffocated to death after the pits they were working in were filled with soil by excavators during a supposedly land reclamation process.

Over 500 000 Zimbabweans, with over three million dependants, have been forced by the failing economy and climate change, among other factors, into small-scale and artisanal mining. However, the artisanal and small-scale mining sector has been characterised by high frequency of accidents resulting in loss of lives, coupled with several bouts of inherent violence.

Hundreds of artisanal miners have died in the pits as a result of criminality in the sector, weak governance, poor environmental management and cold blood murder by politically connected players. This article explores the dynamics surrounding the gold mining sector, and the Premier Estates mining investment deal in particular.

Absence of the social licence

In Zimbabwe, mining companies obtain formal licences from the central government and other regulatory bodies, which govern mining-related activities. Armed with these licences, firms have proceeded to the mining sites without any consideration of consulting local communities. The entry of large-scale miners to any community has been very intrusive to the social, economic and cultural norms of the locals.

Besides being destructive to the environment, mining exacerbates the vulnerability of local communities, especially women, youths and children, as was noted by the chairperson of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Mines and Mining Development, Edmond Mukwaratigwa, during his visit to Premier Estates on November 22. Climate change-induced droughts have caused rain-fed agriculture to be unpredictable. Consequently, there is a growing number of local men and women, who exclusively depend on gold panning for survival.

At Premier Estates, thousands of young people from surrounding villages, Mutare town and even from other provinces have swarmed what used to be farmland in search of gold in order to survive. Thus when a Belarusian company was secretly awarded a special grant to mine alluvial gold deposits at Premier Estates, where hundreds of artisanal miners had been working for a couple of years now, a standoff ensued. Attempts to displace locals were met with stiff resistance.

The mining company then claimed it was no longer interested in mining, but rather farming, in compliance with the Cabinet decision to ban mining in national parks and along rivers. Earthmoving machinery was used to fill the mining shafts despite protests from artisanal miners, who insisted there were people mining underground.

The parliamentary portfolio committee on mines and mining development visited the area on November 22, about a week after the incident, and noted the absence of a social licence for the mining company.

Committee chairperson Mukaratigwa highlighted that the Chinese company contracted by a Belarusian investor did not involve the community leadership in notifying the miners. Therefore, the company lacked the “social acceptability” and “social permission” that is a prerequisite for any business to operate.

“Our concern is that although mining activities are susceptible to accidents, our findings here are pointing to an accident as a result of negligence,” said Mukaratigwa.

“What we see is that the miners were resistant as they went ahead into the shafts despite being told not to. There is also a gap between contractors and the local community, especially in the way they circulated the information on the reclamation.

“They did not involve the local leaders, who have a way of making sure that this type of communication reaches the people more efficiently when such reclamation activities are carried out to eliminate resistance.”

The ZRP acting officer commanding Mutare rural district acknowledged the absence of a social licence and submitted that as the police force, they had to provide security because sections of the community were not happy with the coming in of the investor.

Although the Belarusian and Chinese companies are claiming that they notified the local community of the scheduled operation, which they intended to implement, locals and artisanal miners are disputing the claim.

Impunity and lack of transparency and accountability in the mining sector

Rescue efforts at Premier Estates led to the recovery of two bodies of artisanal miners. Despite that the alleged land reclamation which led to death of the two men identified to date happened in full view of the police, no one has been held accountable over the loss of the two lives. Although the company has already taken responsibility for the deaths of the two by giving their families funeral assistance, police have not preferred any charges against the company.

The attitude by the state shows that the government valorises corporates over protecting citizens’ rights, which has become the blind side of the “Zimbabwe is open for business” mantra.

The ascendancy of President Emmerson Mnangagwa to the helm of the country’s leadership was punctuated by undertones of courting international investors.

“Zimbabwe is open for business” became his mantra, which was aimed at attracting investors, particularly into the mining sector. In October 2019, government launched a mining-centred strategic plan, aimed at achieving a US$12 billion mining economy by 2023.

The strategic plan is part of the broader roadmap of having an upper middle-income economy by 2030. According to the strategic plan, gold, among other minerals, is central to Zimbabwe’s economic recovery plan and it is expected to contribute $4 billion per year by 2023.

However, dubious foreign “investors” with no proven track record in mining have taken advantage of Zimbabwe’s economic policy loopholes and the rent seeking behaviour by the country’s ruling elites to venture into various mining operations in Zimbabwe.

MPs Demand Their Package To Include Funeral Policies And Insurance

Correspondent

Parliamentarians have demanded that Parliament should put them on life insurance and pensions schemes as some legislators were dying and being buried like paupers as they were not insured.

The demands were made during a condolence message motion in the House of Assembly last week following the death of Kuwadzana MP Miriam Mushayi.

Mushayi died in Harare last September and was buried in Hurungwe.

“I think as Hon. Members, we should raise these issues during this period so that when one is elected into Parliament, they should be put on pension after their first term. Not only on pension, with the little knowledge that I have, we should also be given group life scheme,” Zanu PF chief whip, Pupurayi Togarepi said.

“Here in Parliament, it is us who make laws even the Insurance Act. We should look at our side as well because we need all those services. We will need them when death knocks on our doors.

“It is important that as Members of Parliament, we should not just look up to Parliament but Parliament does what we would have come up with because we are the ones who pass the budget and we are the ones who decide what goes into the budget. The Speaker cannot do that for use.

“The ball is in our court as legislators. When we are looking at the welfare of Hon. Members, we should also look at the context of the economy.”

The MDC Alliance Mbizo MP Settlement Chikwinya also demanded that families left behind by MPs who die while in office should automatically benefit from the legislator’s gratuity.

“If we do not speak for ourselves, none but ourselves will speak for us. I thought Parliamentary rules must entail that a Member of Parliament who passes away automatically benefits in terms of their children being taken care of by the pension scheme,” he said.

“A Member of Parliament who passes away before they receive their dues, they must be given to their family including their vehicle. We should have gotten these vehicles on the first day of attending Parliament but because of administrative delays, it is not our choice that other Members of Parliament still do not have their vehicles.

“So if one passes away by an act of God, why should their families be punished. Why should we all celebrate that we have saved money when this Member served for two years and serving Parliament without their vehicles on board.

“Madam Speaker, I think whilst you are seeing all these Hon. Members greeting you nicely and respecting you as you walk in this aisle, they will be actually saying in their hearts that these people are letting us down and if they could have powers, one day they are going to revenge. I am not sure how,” added Chikwinya.

The legislators have of late been making a host of demands including being accorded similar benefits received by cabinet ministers, upmarket houses in Harare, and similar perks with other legislators from the SADC region. They have also been issued with diplomatic passports.

ZESA Begins Receiving New Transformers To Clear Huge Backlog Of Broken Down Transformers

Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority workers working on a new electricity line

ZESA Holdings has acquired a fleet of operational vehicles and distribution transformers aimed at improving service delivery and increasing access to power by citizens.

The state-owned entity unveiled 26 operational vehicles and 185 distribution transformers for its two subsidiaries Powertel and ZETDC.

Speaking at the handover ceremony, ZESA Executive Chairman Dr Sydney Gata bemoaned the sad state of affairs at the parastatal where only half of the required fleet of 3 000 vehicles is serving the entire nation.

“ At times we hire vehicles or use those belonging to customers to attend to faults and this is because we have antiquated equipment,” he said.

Turning to the transformers, Guest of Honour, Energy and Power Development Minister Honourable Zhemu Soda, who was represented by his Deputy Honourable Magna Mudyiwa, highlighted that the new equipment will improve power distribution.

“Zesa is undergoing robust transformation and as Government, our goal is to support these initiatives to ensure that we modernise operations,” noted Mudyiwa.

The Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company requires 4 500 distribution transformers of different capacities to operate optimally but vandalism and theft has impacted negatively on electricity supply and distribution.

The new transformers are part of an 8,8 million United States dollar contract to supply 2074 transformers to the parastatal.

Grouping Of African Churches Back Fraud Accused Shepherd Bushiri – Full Statement

Shepherd Bushiri

African Christian Business Forum notes with concern the attack on Christian leaders in South Africa.

As a Christian grouping, we are bound by the teachings of Christ and the Apostles. We stand firm on the Bible and in this case a particular scripture found in 1 Corinthians 1:10 “I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another in what you say and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly united in mind and thought.”

We are united in calling for the protection of the rights and dignity of Prophet Shepherd, Mary Bushiri and all servants of God. While they are not immune to the law we believe that they must be treated fairly without prejudice.

We note with concern the media onslaught and mudslinging against them as well as political posturing to sway public and legal attention against them. We equally note with concern a similar attack on Miz Tancredi. We are aware of plots to similarly tarnish others such as Bishop Zondo, Leon Du Preez, Dr. Isaiah Brian Sovi, and several other Generals in the body of Christ

As the Pan African Christian Business Forum, we will be holding the drive in demonstrations at South African embassies across Africa to voice our displeasure on the attack on Christian leaders in South Africa.

We will release dates and times for this action soon after consultation with all stakeholders.

Strive Masiyiwa Named Amongst The World’s Top Fifty Prominent Figures

Strive Masiyiwa

ZIMBABWEAN businessman and philanthropist, Mr Strive Masiyiwa, has been named by Bloomberg among the top 50 prominent figures that have changed the global business in 2020.
The annual Bloomberg 50 recognises people who are doing notable things and the 2020 list is made up of individuals who set the bar high in business, entertainment, finance, politics, and science and technology whose accomplishments merit acknowledgment.

Labelling Mr Masiyiwa, who is also the Econet founder, as Zimbabwe’s “messenger of hope”, Bloomberg noted how the businessman’s Higher Life Foundation paid $10 million in cash and other assistance to more than 1 700 health-care workers to urge them not to strike over erosion of wages.

The country had been battling inflation in the first half of the year due to exchange rate volatility.

The Government had to respond by establishing an auction forex trading market, which has brought stability.

“Mr Masiyiwa, a billionaire who’s originally from outside of Zimbabwe’s capital, Harare, paid monthly stipends from ZW$5 000 to ZW$10 000 ($62 to $124) to health-care workers to stay on the job.

“When Covid-19 hit, he offered an additional ZW$500 a day for anyone hospitalised by the virus and ZW$50 000 for permanent disability or death. His programme ran through July,” wrote Bloomberg.

Mr Masiyiwa’s telecommunications company operates in Africa, Asia, Europe, and South America. Through EcoCash, Econet has become a champion of mobile money transactions, which have become popular in the wake of cash shortages and Covid-19 restrictions.

“Mr Masiyiwa sees his donations as giving back to his home country, even though he lives in self-imposed exile, mostly in Johannesburg and London,” wrote Bloomberg.

Ballot Papers Disappear At ZANU PF DCC Elections

Correspondent

ZANU PF looks set never to end its culture of chaos whenever they hold internal elections.

In a DCC election held over the weekend, candidates in Mazowe DCC elections raised concern with the election commissioners over missing ballot boxes that went missing at Zungu business Centre, Shutu village in ward 7.

Eyewitnesses said that polling agents were chased away by Simon Steward the coordinator who is said to be the brains behind the alleged disappearing ballot boxes.

Candidates reported the issue to the election commissioners who are Ezra Chadzamira and Paradza.

Candidates are said to have argued that the ballot boxes are now poisoned chalice as their whereabouts are unknown.

“The candidates argue that these ballot boxes will create an Uzumba effect of amazing numbers in favour of certain candidates.” An eye witness said.

The commissioners are yet to take a decision on whether the missing ballot boxes will be included.

Simon Steward the coordinator was not available for comment on the issue.

Confirmed results from 30 out of 35 polling stations in Mazowe indicate that Tafadzwa Musarara was at a comfortable 1794 votes against John Mudzonga’s 723 votes out of the 2517 ballots counted by 5pm on Sunday.

Insiders allege that there is a plot to tamper with the figures at Nzvimbo, the command post, where figures are being cooked to narrow down Musarara’s margin and pave way for the disappearing ballot boxes.

ZANU PF Turns Party Office Into Tuckshops For Its Members

ZANU PF has turned part of its Harare provincial offices into tuck-shops and booths, in a development that has not been approved by Harare city council, Zim Morning Post can reveal.

Construction of the booths is being presided over by the party’s provincial chairperson, Godwills Masimirembwa, who is believed to be pocketing part of the US$200 per stall in monthly rentals.

“The tuck-shops are going at a monthly rental fee of US$200 per stall and Masimirembwa pockets his shares there. It’s very bad how these guys are so hypocritical,” said a Zanu PF insider.

“They demolish ordinary citizens’ tuck-shops but build theirs right in the city centre.”

“I am a staunch Zanu PF supporter but this behaviour exposes us ahead of the 2023 elections,” he added.

Masimirembwa’s mobile number went unanswered until it became unreachable at the time of writing.

He also did not respond to questions sent to him. He has previously been accused of demanding a US$6 million bribe from a Ghanaian firm that wanted to dig for diamonds in Marange.

Masimirembwa was chairman for the Zimbabwe Mining Development Corporation then, but was later exonerated by the later former President Robert Mugabe.

Reached for comment Harare Provincial Development Coordinator (PDC) Tafadzwa Muguti professed ignorance over the development and referred this reporter to Masimirembwa.

“Well, I speak for government and not the party. The best person to talk to will be Cde Masimirembwa,” he said.

“However, although I am responsible for technical and administrative support, I have not received such a report, but like I said, consult the party provincial chairman,“ Muguti added.

The construction of the tuck-shops coincides with the City Fathers’ threats to raze down all illegally erected tuck-shops and booths around the city as part of its campaign to rid the capital of unwanted structures.

“The city has zero tolerance on illegal structures and settlements. We are targeting illegal extensions. All extensions on properties have to be approved by council and if they are not, then they are deemed illegal and will be removed,” city spokesperson Michael Chideme recently said.

The tuck-shops saga comes as Zanu PF bigwigs are building ‘war chests’ ahead of the 2023 elections.

Party insiders say there is a scramble to loot resources to fund the campaign trail ahead of the 2023 elections.

“I Debated His Father,” Julius Malema Dismisses Calls For Him To Debate Duduzani Zuma

Julius Malema

EFF leader Julius Malema has responded to mounting calls about having a political debate with businessman Duduzane Zuma, saying his son was ready to debate with Zuma.

The calls were made over the weekend after videos of Zuma went viral. Many suggested Zuma and Malema had things in common after going viral, saying they would like to see the two debate politics.

However, Malema hinted the debate would be beneath him. He said he had already debated with the businessman’s father, former president Jacob Zuma.

“Ratanang is ready to debate him; I debated his father,” said Malema.

Cadiz Stun Mighty Barcelona

The battle for supremacy in Spain continued with match day 11 of Laliga and here is how things unfolded in the Spanish top-flight.

Early pacesetters Atletico Madrid beat Real Valladolid 2-0 at the Wandar Metropolitano.

Diego Simeone’s charges got the better of their opponents thanks to goals by Thomas Lemar and Marcus Llorente. As a result, Atletico now have a two-point lead at the summit of the table, ahead of second placed Real Sociedad.

Defending champions Real Madrid gave a lifeline to under-fire coach Zinedine Zidane with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Sevilla at the Estadio Ramom Sanchez Pizjuan.

Barcelona’s woes under Ronald Koeman continue. The Catalan giants were shocked 1-2 by new boys Cadiz at the Ramon de Caranza.

Former Manchester City striker Alvaro Negredo pilled more misery on the Catalans with a second half winner. They (Barcelona) are now 9th on the table an astonishing 12 points behind leaders Atletico.-Soccer 24

Benzema Is My Inspiration -Kadewere

Warriors striker Tino Kadewere still insists Real Madrid star Karim Benzema’s inspiration was one of the factors which led to him choosing Olympique Lyon as his preferred club.

The 24-year old Highfield-bred hotshot had an unforgettable 2019/20 season at Le Havre, where he top-scored with 20 goals and four assists, resulting in an on-demand status among various clubs in Europe.

He eventually ended up at Les Gones, where he  says the exploits of Benzema before his move to Real Madrid, made him join the club with the prospect of becoming a better player, just like the Frenchman did.

“I just felt that Lyon was a club that made its players grow. And I thought of Benzema. He’s one of my favorite players. I used to watch him a lot when I was younger, I follow him on social media to see how he lives, trains,” Kadewere told French publication L’Équipe.

“To be honest, this is one of the big reasons for signing for Lyon. My career is on the right track but I must not rest. I am in a big club, one of the best in the world but, if I keep going, why not go even higher?,” added the Zimbabwe international.-Soccer 24

Ndiraya Speaks On Young Warriors Loss To Mozambique

Zimbabwe U20 men’s team coach Tonderai Ndiraya says his side failed to execute basic instructions in their 2-0 loss to Mozambique at the COSAFA Championship on Sunday.

The Young Warriors conceded the goals in the second half which handed them their first defeat at the tournament. The boys never come alive in the entire match and made unnecessary blunders which put them under pressure.

“What was lacking from my side were basic things like striking the ball, shooting at goal and other such basics. It is a fact that if you fail to get the basics, things become difficult,” said Ndiraya, according to the Chronicle.

Zimbabwe now need a victory in their final game of the group against Lesotho, coupled with favourite results elsewhere, to stand any chance of reaching the semi-finals as a best-placed runner up.

SADC Lawmakers Urged to Strengthen Laws to Respond to Human Rights Threats

Lawmakers from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) must strengthen laws to protect human rights amid growing threats in the region, including violations linked to Mozambique’s conflict and a clampdown on the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly due to COVID-19, Amnesty International said today.

“From Angola to Lesotho to Zimbabwe, people have been subjected to excessive use of force by the police for standing up for their rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly. Conflict in Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado region has led to abductions, arbitrary detention and other violations,” said Deprose Muchena, Amnesty International’s Director for East and Southern Africa.

“We have also seen the deep economic inequalities and social injustices that have been exposed by the COVID-19 pandemic. It’s time for SADC lawmakers to step up their interventions, strengthen laws and implement policies that ensure respect for people’s rights across the region.”

Enhancing the role of parliaments in the protection and promotion of human rights in SADC member states will be the focus of a webinar Amnesty International is jointly hosting with the SADC Parliamentary Forum on 7 December. The webinar will offer vital guidance to SADC policymakers and non-state actors on how to collaborate effectively to tackle key human rights issues across the region.

Conflict and human rights violations

The human rights situation in Mozambique has deteriorated since fighting began more than three years ago in Cabo Delgado province, by an armed group calling itself “Al-Shabaab”. The conflict has killed more than 2,000 people and violent attacks by the armed group grew by 300% in the first four months of 2020, compared to the same period last year.

Mozambican armed forces have been accused of crimes under international law and human rights violations in pursuit of those suspected of being involved with the armed group, including extrajudicial executions, torture and other ill-treatment.

“Until now, the victims of the conflict in Cabo Delgado are no closer to justice, truth and reparation. Mozambican authorities have failed to bring to justice all those suspected of crimes under international law and human rights violations,” said Deprose Muchena.

Freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly

The rights to freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly have increasingly come under attack in countries where people have demanded more accountability from their governments, including Eswatini, Lesotho, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

In Lesotho, dozens of youth activists were subjected to police brutality in November, after they led a peaceful demonstration demanding more economic opportunities and employment. Eleven of them were arrested and charged with illegal gathering and disruption of peace.

The group is scheduled to appear in court on 14 December. Authorities must immediately drop the charges against the youth activists, who were arrested solely for peacefully exercising their right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

As COVID-19 continued to spread across Southern Africa, governments have been targeting journalists and media houses that are critical of their handling of the pandemic, From Madagascar to Zambia, governments have been criminalizing journalists and shutting down media outlets that are perceived to be calling out poor government responses to COVID-19.

In Zambia, authorities shut down the independent television news channel, Prime TV, on 9 April after cancelling its broadcasting license. The cancellation came after the alleged refusal by the station to air the government’s COVID-19 public awareness campaigns because the station was owed money for airing previous state advertisements different to public awareness. Prime TV, as an independent station, depends on advertising revenue to pay the salaries of its staff and operational costs.

In Eswatini, police detained Eugen Dube, journalist and editor of Swati Newsweek Online, for seven hours on 23 April. The detention followed an article he wrote that the King’s public health strategy in the face of COVID-19 was reckless because the country had no social distancing measures in place.

Authorities reportedly tried to charge him for ‘writing ill’ about King Mswati III which could constitute high treason.

Socio-economic rights

As COVID-19 spread, millions of people across Southern Africa faced hunger as lockdowns meant that they were unable to access food.

The vast majority of people in the region make their living in the informal economy, for example as street vendors or manual labourers. Under lockdown measures, these were considered “non-essential” roles and people in this sector were prohibited from working.

As the socio-economic impacts of COVID-19 persist, Amnesty International is calling on governments to urgently put in place social protection measures to uphold the right to food, such as food subsidies, or directly provide food to those who are unable to provide it for themselves.

SADC member states must also enact and implement laws and policies that promote justice and equality, including ensuring access to employment and social services especially health, education, water, sanitation and food in line with regional constitutional and international human rights standards.

“Parliaments are the custodians of human rights. As people across the region face threats to their rights,  SADC Parliaments must lead in developing regional principles and guidelines for the protection and promotion of human rights,” said Deprose Muchena.

Background

Amnesty International and the SADC Parliamentary Forum will co-host a webinar on 7 December to discuss the role of parliaments in enhancing the protection and promotion of human rights in SADC. The webinar also seeks to identify ways for strengthening cooperation between parliaments and non-state actors to make human rights a reality for all in southern Africa.

The Session will be attended by members of the SADC PF Standing Committee on Democratization, Governance and Human Rights and stakeholders drawn from state and non-state human rights actors, civil society, media and technical partners in SADC.

Deal With Rampant Looting In Government, Ngarivhume Challenges Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission

Tinashe Sambiri|Transform Zimbabwe leader, Jacob Ngarivhume, has challenged the Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission to deal with rampant corruption in government departments.

Below is Ngarivhume’s statement :

Today l had a two and half hour engagement with the entire board of the Zimbabwe Anti Corruption Commission led by Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo.
We raised several issues of concern to the citizens which required answers from the Commission.

Firstly l had reached out to the Auditor General’s office over their reports they have been producing since 2017 which unearthed massive corruption in government particularly command agriculture. The AG’s office indicated that they have an MoU with ZACC which ZACC can use to follow up on any corruption issues raised.

Secondly, l touched base with the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Finance chair Hon Tendai Biti, who indicated that they are finalizing a report on Command Agriculture which showed that over US$3 bn could not be accounted for. Though a full report is to be produced for Parliament and ZACC, they revealed that there is enough information for ZACC to start their investigations on the corruption, but this has not yet started.

The ZACC Chairperson said the Commission had received the AG’s reports but were waiting for forensic reports to be commissioned by the AG’s office so that they look into the issues raised in those reports. She however outlined the limitations faced by the Commission in the pursuit of its mandate. ZACC is sitting on seventy five high profile cases which can not be prosecuted as whistle blowers are demanding protection which the current legal framework can not provide. There is urgent need to reform our legal system and amend our court rules.

We raised issues of the 15bil diamond money looted and the Drax Covidgate money. Justice Moyo indicated that they are still in the process of recovering the money stolen from Covid donations. A total of 2mil had been paid out.

As citizens we will continue focusing on the forensic audits and push for the investigation of the command agriculture funds. We will not rest until justice is served.

Bulawayo Residents Left Stuck As ZUPCO Pulls Out

By A Correspondent| The commuting public in Zimbabwe’s second largest city of Bulawayo have been left stuck following the decision by the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (ZUPCO) to withdraw services citing poor roads.

Bulawayo’s Ward 28 councilor, Kidwell Mujuru recently told councillors during a full council meeting that ZUPCO had withdrawn services in some areas in Cowdray Park suburb.

“Residents were now walking more than 2km to get public transport. He (Mujuru) was also concerned about the main road leading to the Cowdray Park revenue office which was now a security risk,” reads part of the council minutes.

Emakhandeni councillor Pilate Moyo also concurred with Mujuru.

“ZUPCO had also withdrawn services in Emakhandeni especially in areas connected by Masiyephambili Drive as the road was in a very bad state,” councillor Moyo told the meeting.

Sisi Tsvigiri Beds Own Brother After Using Love Charm

MDC Alliance Denounces Persecution Of Harare Metropolitan Councillors :Full Text

By Jane Mlambo| Controversial cleric Passion Java has insulted investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono after he questioned why Zimbabweans follow the socialite at the expense of people pushing for national interests- like Namatai Kwekweza.

Khupe’s Aide Khalipani Phugeni Acquitted

MDC-T acting national spokesperson Khaliphani Phugeni, who doubles as interim party president Thokozani Khupe’s press secretary, has been acquitted of rape, the Zimbabwe Independent reports.

Phugeni (44) appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Sibongile Marondedze last month charged with contravening section 65 of the Criminal Law, Codification and Reform) Act (Chapter 9:23).

Prosecutors said Phugeni unlawfully had sexual intercourse with a woman, who could not be named for ethical reasons, during the period extending from June to November 2018, at Emhlangeni and in Magwegwe West, Bulawayo.

Phugeni denied the charge, saying the accusations were politically-motivated and meant to “politically soil” his image after he was nominated for Senate.

Obert Mpofu And Wife Said To Be Stable After Contracting COVID-19

By A Correspondent | Zanu-PF secretary for administration Obert Mpofu and his wife Sikhanyisiwe, a Matabeleland North Senator, have tested positive for Covid-19.

Mpofu told a local online news organisation that he and his wife were “stable” when reached by phone.

They couple is self-isolating separately in Harare, Zanu-PF acting spokesman Patrick Chinamasa added.

Mpofu and his wife are the latest high-profile figures to contract the virus, which was blamed for the death of freelance journalist Zororo Makamba in March; lands and agriculture minister Perrance Shiri in July and ZBC reporter Janet Makamba on Saturday.

On Saturday, Zimbabwe reported 70 new Covid-19 cases and 10 deaths. Nine of the 10 deaths were in Harare, while one was recorded in Bulawayo.

Overall, Zimbabwe has reported 10,617 Covid-19 cases which have resulted in 291 deaths.

All Chaos In Zanu PF DCC Elections

Chaotic scenes characterised the Zanu PF district co-ordinating committee (DCC) elections at the weekend amid allegations of vote-rigging, burning of ballot papers and violence in most parts of the country.

The ruling party held its DCC elections in eight provinces in the country except for Harare and Bulawayo.

Zanu PF chairperson Oppah Muchinguri  was scheduled to address the Press yesterday evening over the elections, but she was in no-show after journalists waited for several hours.

Acting party spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa, who was locked in a meeting late last night, could not immediately comment.

However, chaotic scenes dogged the DCC elections in most parts of the country with contestants almost trading blows.

In Mutare, there were riots after some party members burnt ballot papers following allegations of rigging and vote-buying.

A vehicle that was supposed to deliver ballot papers in Mutare broke down in Marondera on Saturday, which delayed the process.

Four candidates, Binali Yard, Clever Muparutsa, war veteran Ivan Mbengo and the outspoken Cecilia Gambe were competing for the Mutare chairperson’s post.

Names of some candidates were missing from the ballot papers.

Some Zanu PF supporters, who commented on condition of anonymity, said the elections were not free and fair due to massive rigging with some party members voting without identity cards.

“There is a massive shortage of ballot papers, just imagine there is a ward with 349 registered voters and the ward only received 47 ballot.

papers. We decided that the ballot papers must be burnt,”the party member said.

“In ward four, people are voting at least five or six times with some agents reportedly keeping ballot papers in their pockets and receiving bribes from some candidates to help them rig the elections,” he said.

At one time, Gambe threatened to pull out of the race, citing incidences of multiple voting.

In ward four in Sakubva, there were reports of people voting without identity cards, while some presiding officers were accused of taking bribes.

Voting started late at some polling centres such as Mutare Junior, Beit Hall in Sakubva, and Mutanda Primary School as ballot papers were delivered late.

A rowdy group in Sakubva ended up burning ballot papers due to disgruntlement over the manner in which the election process was being handled.

However, Zanu PF Manicaland secretary for administration, Kenneth Saruchera rubbished the rigging allegations.

“The problem is that some candidates are just cry-babies,” Saruchera said.

In Marondera, some voters abandoned the polls because the names of their candidates of choice were missing from the ballot paper.

In Hurungwe, new ballot papers had to be brought in after the initial lot were rejected because the names of some candidates were missing.

A new set of ballot papers was collected from Harare overnight.

There was also drama at Chikangwe in Karoi when an aspiring candidate for the chairmanship post Franko Ndambakuwa almost assaulted Shepherd Marime, a youth member from a rival camp.

Ndambakuwa, a war veteran, had to be restrained by other party members.

In Mashonaland Central, the voting process progressed into the night amid concerns that this would impact on the smooth running of the elections.

A contestant in Chiredzi, Tarusenga Makamba, a former ward three councillor, had his name missing on the ballot paper, yet it appeared on the voters roll.

Some voters were given plates of sadza and drinks in ward four in a suspected case of vote-buying.

In Matabeleland North, voting started late and heavy rains disrupted the process.

Mliswa Pokes Holes in Zanu PF DCCs

1/ Observations of a Political Commentator….
The @ZANUPF_Official DCC elections began from a problematic position. Structures weren’t in place, no cell/branch elections were conducted.

2/ The DCCs were marred by impositions & accusations of anti-ED, G40, Gamatox taunts were rife instead of convincing the people what one has to offer. People simply want to know what candidates will do to turn around the economy and to address their welfare.

3/The fissures are apparent& come 2023 this’ll be disastrous for the party. How do you call provinces people’s provinces when all the Chairs save for Chadzamira & maybe Matiza weren’t elected? So you have a scenario where unelected Chairpersons appoint their own unelected persons

4/ who go on to impose people not in structures. It’s a horror!! I’d hate to be a @ZANUPF_Official leader in such a fiasco where gossiping & rumourmongering rule the day. You can never take somebody’s vote away from them. They’ll keep it with them to your detriment

5/ More trouble and purging lies ahead & come 2023 they’ll be a split. In an area of 120 voters where only 20 vote can you say the will of the people has been encompassed? What about the other 100? The best thing @ZANUPF_Official can do is to nullify these elections & restructure

6/ Restructuring may commence from January 2021 beginning with the Cells then the Branches in February followed by District elections in March and Provincial in April, Central Committee in May with the Politburo being subsequently formed. That would be my advice

7/ For now, this is the worst crop of politicians I’ve seen in ZANUPF, no ideology, nothing. What happened to the school of ideology or is just a facade? The current people are totally devoid of orientation & contradict themselves…. it’s a farce

Ms Shally Speaks On Feud With Ginimbi’s Ex-Wife Zodwa

There are rumours circulating on social media that Shaleen Nullens aka MsShally was left homeless after the death of Ginimbi and was fired by Ginimbi’s ex-wife Zodwa Mkandla. She has however reacted to the news as she explains what really happened. Below is her responds

“I don’t usually respond to rumours but I decided to respond just to this one. When God decided to take Genius “Ginimbi” away that second my position in his precious life was no more.

“Genius believed in excellence, to stay close to him you had to prove you had something to offer, something that could cause a positive impact be it in business or his personal life. He was all about results and facts.

“I was His manager till the end and i gave him results beyond his expectations. I am a woman who produces good results and talk less, my results in running successful businesses and events were even acknowledged by Forbes Africa on the Forbes Africa 30under 30 list as one of the young entrepreneurs in Africa to look out for, to add to it the UN department UNHCR requested me to be a co-founding member of the businesswoman network the list can go on and on, i appreciate being recognised but my focus it’s to make money that is what i was trained to do.

“This goes back to when I was 14years old my father made sure he is training me to work hard for money and not wait for handouts.

“I was living with Genius not because I was homeless . When Genius was buried i flew back to South Africa the next day because i can’t live in that house without him, every corner of that households precious memories,” said Ms Shally.

Chiwenga’s Military Tactics Flop As High Court Orders Continuation of Flexi-Hours

The High Court has ruled that nurses can continue working flexible hours despite the noting of an appeal by the government against an earlier High Court decision granting that permission.

High Court judge Justice Happias Zhou on Friday granted the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) leave to execute a judgment granted in their favour to resume flexible time pending the hearing of an appeal filed by the government to the Supreme Court.

“Notwithstanding the noting of an appeal against the judgment of this honourable court dated November 20, the first to third respondents remain barred from implementing the directive by the third respondent on October 19,” ruled Zhou.

On 20 November this year, High Court judge Justice Martin Mafusire ruled in favour of public sector nurses in their dispute with Vice President and Health and Child Care Minister Constantino Chiwenga over the termination of flexible working hours.

This was after ZINA had sued the Health Services Board, Health minister and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, and permanent secretary in the Health ministry Jasper Chimedza for unilaterally terminating nurses’ flexible hours.

Mnangagwa Ascendancy Null And Void

Former Zanu PF Mashonaland Central official Goodman Tamuona Musariri  has slammed President Emmerson Mnangagwa saying his ascendancy after the November 2017 coup was null and void.

Musariri said he will soon approach the courts to challenge his ascendancy while praising his deputy Constantino Chiwenga for his role in the coup.

He was speaking to Newsday in an interview published on Monday.

“I became a fan of the Operation Restore Legacy of November 2017 which was led by General Chiwenga and the army which I believed was going to end up with the formation of much-awaited transitional authority led by Chiwenga himself. I find Mnangagwa’s ascendancy through the unsanctioned Zanu PF central committee caucus of November 19 2017 unlawful, null and void.

“Chiwenga like any VP in Zanu PF is not an elected member of congress, but an appointee of the President to serve at Mnangagwas pleasure and mercy. Both the MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa and Mnangagwa were illegitimate presidential candidates for 2018.

“Thus the whole ‘new dispensation’ is voidable with Chiwenga’s position being held in abeyance or in suspense mode unless he claims the revision of Operation Restore Legacy after acknowledging the illegitimacy of the ascendancy of Mnangagwa. I, however, would love to see Zimbabwe changing from liberation war movement politics and administration to the modern constitutional participatory multi-party electoral democracy,” said Musariri.

Mbeki Roped In To Manage Potential ANC Collapse

Thabo Mbeki

Former president Thabo Mbeki’s surprise reappearance at the ANC’s national executive committee meeting on Sunday set social media ablaze and raised questions on what his sudden return meant.

It appears the Mbeki card has been in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s pocket for some time. One of the first trips Ramaphosa made after being elected president of the ANC at Nasrec in 2017 was to Mbeki’s home to ask for his support.

Sources inside the meeting say Mbeki was brought in to avoid the party disintegrating into an early conference if ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule was forced to step down.

The Star has been reliably informed that the Magashule faction was preparing itself to call for an early conference if he was axed.

Mbeki, a seasoned negotiator, was brought in to manage a potential fallout. Mbeki’s office and the Thabo Mbeki Foundation have not returned any of The Star’s calls.

The threat of an early conference which would potentially remove the top six was further amplified by MKMVA (Mkhonto Wesizwe Military Veterans Association) president Kebby Maphatsoe, who threatened the country with war if Magashule was removed or if Zuma was arrested.

“South Africa will be ungovernable. It will be open war. Let them fire the SG or arrest Zuma,” Maphatsoe warned.

Another source at Luthuli House, the ANC’s headquarters, has revealed to The Star that Ramaphosa first offered Mbeki the position of leader of an envoy to the US to boost economic growth but declined.

Mbeki suggested, however, that Phumzile Mlambo Ngcuka, former deputy president and wife of former Scorpions chief Bulelani Ngcuka, be appointed.

Zuma also put in an appearance at the NEC, a move later defended by Magashule, saying “the NEC was wiser because of the attendance of Mbeki and Zuma”.

It appears Mbeki will now be an active factor in Ramaphosa’s decisions, under a code phrase used in Ramaphosa’s inner circle known as “Rescinding the Zuma phenomenon”.

Magashule declined to comment on whether Mbeki was brought in to manage the fallout that would come if he were removed.

“I won’t be removed. That’s it. The ANC is working,” Magashule said.

Magashule is also said to be very close to ANC treasurer-general Paul Mashatile.

In 2008, the then NEC resolved to remove Mbeki as president after a defeat by Zuma at the party’s elective conference in Polokwane the previous year.

Later in 2008, Mbeki was angry the ANC had announced that he would campaign on its behalf after it fired him.

In a letter to Zuma, delivered to Luthuli House, Mbeki complained that he had not been consulted by party bosses about whether he would be available to assist in the election campaign.

Mbeki is understood to have complained about the irony that the very ANC that recalled him from office because it had no confidence in him, saw fit to publicly announce that he would be expected to campaign for it.

Mbeki also raised that he had been attacked for taking Judge Chris Nicholson’s judgment – which implied he was guilty of political meddling and abusing state resources – on review.

The NEC meeting will conclude on Tuesday.

Journalist Janet Munyaka Burial Set For Glen Forest Today

THE Covid-19 death toll has risen to 291 after 10 more people succumbed to the global pandemic on Saturday including ZBC’s diplomatic correspondent Janet Munyaka.

She was 48.

Munyaka died Saturday evening at Harare’s St Anne’s hospital where she had been admitted since last week battling Covid-19.

The Ministry of Health and Child Care says of the 10 deaths recorded on Saturday, nine were from Harare and only one from Bulawayo.

A total of 70 people tested positive to Covid-19 countrywide bringing the total number of cases to 10 617.

“We recorded 70 new cases and 10 deaths in the last 24 hours where 1 577 PCR tests were conducted. Of those who tested positive 50 are local cases and 20 are returnees from South Africa,” said the Ministry.

The Ministry also reported that 46 new recoveries were recorded countrywide although the national recovery rate went down to 81,4 percent from 85.

As of December 5, Zimbabwe had recorded 10 617 cases, 8 844 recoveries and 291 deaths.

Bulawayo has the highest number of active Covid-19 cases at 565 against a national total of 1 482. Covid-19 deaths and new cases have been on the increase in what experts have described as a second wave of the devastating pandemic which is likely to kill hundreds if people do not practice hand hygiene, social distancing and the wearing of masks correctly.

In a statement, the ZBC said Munyaka is survived by husband, Jackson and four children.

ZBC acting chief executive officer Ms Halliet Rushwaya said Munyaka was supposed to have graduated with a Masters Degree in International Relations at the University of Zimbabwe last Friday but missed the ceremony after being hospitalised.

“This is a great loss to us at ZBC and to the media fraternity. Janet was a veteran journalist and a friend to many in the industry. Our thoughts are with her family at this difficult time,” she said.

Munyaka joined the ZBC in 2000 as production assistant in the news department after studying Mass Communication at Harare Polytechnic College.

She rose through the ranks from production assistant to municipal correspondent, health correspondent before being promoted to Diplomatic Correspondent, taking over from the late Judith Makwanya.

Shock As Impala Car Rental Gets Recognised As Most Trusted Car Hire Company

impala car rental

Forces continue to try to spruce up tainted Impala Car Rental image after the company was caught up in an abduction incident.

The troubled company was over the weekend accorded two awards, the Superbrand of the Year and the Most Trusted Brand in the Car Hire sector for the year 2020.

The Superbrand of the Year award was being sponsored by the Marketers Association Zimbabwe while the Most Trusted Brand was awarded by the Chartered Institute of Customer Relationship Management.

Speaking after receiving the awards, Impala Car Rental Group Brand Manager Ms Tracy Ngoma attributed the achievements to the company’s customer-centric approach and the work ethic engrained in the team over the years.

“It is an honour to receive any form of accolade. We value such recognition as it clearly shows that we are doing things right. We were also humbled to be selected as winners amongst such formidable competitors that we work with in the car rental industry in particular and tourism in general,” said Ms Ngoma.

She added: “I believe we are consistent in the way we do things, and in our service delivery as such those that have direct contact with our service, know for certain the values we uphold as a company.

“As testimony of our excellency in customer service we have been scooping these awards for the past five years. We also owe it to our visionary leader Mr Thompson Dondo, the chief executive officer who is customer-centric and has an open-door policy in managing the business.”

Ms Ngoma said Impala Car Rental has an experienced team that distinguishes it from the rest. She added that Impala Car Rental was the only car hire company that offers 24-hour service.

“As the saying goes ‘experience is the best teacher.’ I believe the amount of experienced engrained in us over the years has enhanced our efficiencies and also improved our systems and the way we do doing things.

“We are flexible, innovative, customer-centric, and we have a leader who is involved in everything to do with the business.
“As a result, we continue to grow. Recently we opened a branch in Zambia and business is booming there,” said Ms Ngoma.

She expressed gratitude to Mr Dondo for leading the team from the front.

“We take pride in the way Mr Dondo does business. He has shown us that business requires one to be hardworking, professional and to be a team player who listens.

“We are grateful that we get to interact with him daily. The knowledge and wisdom that he imparts on us are unapparelled and priceless.

“He takes time to groom and guide everyone in the team, including us the mangers

Ms Ngoma said with all the achievements over the years, Impala Car Rental was destined to conquer Southern Africa.
“We are definitely going places. In Southern Africa, we now have firm footprints in Zimbabwe, South Africa and Zambia. Continue watching the space because our intention is to conquer the region,” said Ms Ngoma.

Opportunistic Medical Laboratories Set Up In Beitbridge To Capture Travellers Needing Covid-19 Testing

Several laboratories have started setting shop in Beitbridge town to service travellers who are required to comply with the internationally set strict and safe cross-border migration standards under the Covid-19 pandemic environment.

The border was re-opened last week and upon arrival, Zimbabwe requires visitors to produce a Covid-19 free certificate with a 48-hour validity. South Africa requires a certificate with a validity of 72 hours.

With respect to commercial cargo, drivers need Covid-19 free certificates with 14 days’ validity.

A survey around Beitbridge town by our news crew last week revealed that there are four testing laboratories, including the one at the District Referral Hospital.

Testing cost up to US$60 at approved laboratories officering Covid-19 tests in Beitbridge.

Assistant Regional Immigration officer-in-charge of Beitbridge, Mr Nqobile Ncube, said many people waited for the border to officially open for them to start the process of getting their Covid-19 certificates.

“In terms of those travellers who were turned away at the entry points to the border, the most common reasons being brought to our attention are to do with the new Statutory Instrument which makes it clear what form of test is required and acceptable,” he said.

The development comes after cross border traders, who are usually the majority to pass through border posts, have said they are ready to abide by the new protocols to curb the spread of Covid-19 as gazetted by Government.

Cross Border Traders Association of Zimbabwe president Mr Killer Zivhu said the association had already communicated with all its members across the country on what was needed to be done in terms of following the Covid-19 regulations.

“We are well prepared,” he said.

“We have identified a registered organisation that is going to test cross border traders and they will be tested on an agreeable fee of US$35. When getting out of the country, they will be tested and given a certificate and when they come back they will be tested and given their results before mixing with others.

“We are going to work hard and closely with the Government in preventing the spread of Covid-19. No one should go out of the country without producing a Covid-19 certificate.

“Some people come as far as Kariba to Beitbridge and let us say they are tested at the border and find that they are positive to the virus, they will be turned back home and what it means is that they will be spreading the virus on their way to the border and they will be spreading it again on their way home.”

Mr Zivhu said testing people before they travelled to the borders would minimise the spread of Covid-19, and cross border traders had heeded the call to do so.

The association has identified various centres in towns and cities like Harare, Beitbridge, Mutare, Plumtree, Victoria Falls and Hwange, where cross border traders can be tested for Covid-19 at a lower cost.

Mr Zivhu appealed for Government to allow buses to carry people travelling through the border since the majority of cross border traders did not have private cars.

VICTORY: Mbuya Nehanda Statue To Be Redone Following Public Outcry?

The much criticised statue

The government will consider input from Zimbabweans on the Mbuya Nehanda statue that will eventually be erected in Harare amid indications authorities are mulling the possibility of starting the process afresh following a public outcry.

A statue being made by sculptor David Mutasa sent tongues wagging when its images started circulating on social media after it was shown to President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week.

Some felt that the statue that showed a younger Mbuya Nehanda compared to how she appeared on her only known image was a distortion.

Godfrey Mahachi, the National Monuments and Museums of Zimbabwe (NMMZ) executive director, told The Standard that there was need for consensus on the spirit medium’s image.

“The statue is being erected by the people of Zimbabwe,” Mahachi said.

“Whilst our appreciation of exactly how Mbuya Nehanda looked like is limited because there’s probably one photograph of her, there still needs to be some degree of consensus on the image of her, notwithstanding the limitations related to the issue.

“The opinions of the people matter.” The NMMZ defended the erection of the statue, which some Zimbabweans feel is not a priority at a time the country is facing a myriad of economic-related problems.

“Statues are commonplace throughout the world, including the Christian world,” Mahachi said.

“Zimbabwe a few years ago erected the statue of Father Zimbabwe (late vice president Joshua Nkomo), South Africa and Mozambique erected statues of their former departed leaders, Nelson Mandela and Samora Machel respectively.

“The United Kingdom and the rest of Europe and North America erect numerous statues of various persons regarded as significant contributors to their national histories.

“They are recognising the contributions of these people. “They are celebrating them as distinguished departed citizens,” Mahachi argued.

“They are not idols. They have not turned them into gods. They have made monuments out of their stories. The same applies in our case. Mbuya Nehanda is not being turned into a god because of the statue.

“As Zimbabweans, the statement we are making is that we’re thankful to Mbuya Nehanda for the courage and sacrifices she made through her spiritual leadership of the First Chimurenga and we want present and future generations to remember those contributions and be inspired by them as they also become citizens, who contribute to the common good.”

He said they chose to do a statue of Mbuya Nehanda Nyakasikana because of her role in the liberation struggle particularly her prophetic words before her hanging in 1898 that “my bones will rise,” which inspired the Second Chimurenga.

“It will be remembered that the Second Chimurenga that finally delivered independence and sovereignty to Zimbabweans was directly inspired by the First Chimurenga, in particular Mbuya Nehanda’s prophetic words ‘my bones shall rise’ declaration just before she was hanged by the colonial administration for her role in that early struggle against our conquest by the British,” Mahachi said.

Nehanda is a spirit, who operates through mediums. “There are known mediums of Nehanda before Nyakasikana inasmuch as there are some after her.

“Currently there are several claimants, dotted around the country. The fact that we have a medium through whom we then interact and get guidance from Nehanda the spirit means that the spirit has personified itself through its medium. We can represent the spirit through its medium.

“The medium is our means to the spirit. If we, therefore, want to respect the spirit and to immortalise it through honouring by way of erecting a statue, we represent the spirit through its medium.”

Gokwe Villagers Making A Killing Extracting Vehicles Stuck In Muddy Roads As Heavy Rains Hit The Area

The Zimbabwe Voice

The truck cost the driver a lot more to be pulled out.

VILLAGERS in Nembudziya, Gokwe and surrounding areas are making brisk business using their own manpower or ox-driven draught power to drag cars struggling to pass the district’s flooded rivers.

So bad are the roads in the area that even area MP, Zanu-PF’s flamboyant Justice Mayor Wadyajena, has previously had to abandon an offroad sport utility vehicle after it struggled to cross a river.

Villagers said the most notorious spot during the rain season is at Kawongo Bridge along the road that connects Gokwe South and Gokwe North via Nemangwe.

A haulage truck spent the better part of yesterday stuck in the muddied road as the local youths mobilised manpower while the driver sourced the funds for the lorry to be pulled across.

“It’s a pitty that I am just an employee trying to go about my business, buy I have to pay the local folks some “tollgate fee” for the men to pull and push my truck across,” said the driver.

“I’ve been stuck at this bridge for a while day running around to source the ‘fees’. Other motorists have been paying between US$5-00 and US$10-00 for them to cross the flooded Kawongo River.

“Unfortunately, my truck is loaded and much heavier such that the locals have really gotten an opportunity to milk me dry.

“Authorities really meed to fix this problem because it crops up yea after year,” said the driver, sounding distraught after hours on end on the spot.

By around 1400hrs, his haulage truck that was carrying cement to Nembudziya was still trapped on the bridge.

Delays In Sprucing Up Bus Terminuses By City Of Harare Expose Commuters To Heavy Rains Pounding The Capital

Paul Nyathi

Urban public transporters users in Harare have been left exposed to the harsh wet weather as efforts by the Harare City Council to spruce up bus terminuses across the city have delayed.

In March this year, Harare City Council spokesperson, Mr Michael Chideme promised that the refurbishment would commence before this year’s rainy season, but up to now there is nothing tangible.

Passenger Association of Zimbabwe president, Tafadzwa Goliati, blasted the local authority for failing to spruce up terminuses.

“The Harare City council promised to address the issue of refurbishing the terminuses, but they are taking ages and we do not even know when the problem would be solved,” he said. “As it stands, it seems the city fathers have no answers to problems affecting the city.”

Greater Harare Association of Commuter Omnibus Operators secretary-general Mr Ngoni Katsvairo said they were not getting value for their money.

“We are not getting any services at ranks at all, just look at their state, the deplorable toilets and lack of garbage collection,” he said.

The city has five terminuses in the CBD — Market Square, Copacabana, Simon Muzenda Street (formerly Fourth Street), Charge Office and Rezende Street.

These terminuses lack roofs on the waiting sheds and properly functioning toilets. The few shelters still standing have been stripped of their roofs, while metal bars that used to hold them together are falling apart.

“2021 First School Term Not Beginning In February,” Govt Explains

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Director of Communications, Mr Taungana Ndoro

All schools will open on January 4 for the first 2021 term including Form Four pupils who will be expected to finish their examinations which spilled into 2021 due to the outbreak of Covid-19.

This time there will be no phased opening.

The opening is for all classes except pupils enrolling for Form One and Form Five who will wait for examination results.

Those going into Form One, who are Grade Seven this year, started writing public examinations last week on Thursday and will finish on 17 December.

Those writing Ordinary Level examinations will have some of their papers overlapping into early next year.

Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Director of Communications, Mr Taungana Ndoro said there are no changes in the 2021 school calendar.

“The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education would like to set the record straight that schools will open on 4 January 2021 and not in a phased approach as has been announced on Sunday by one news report.

“Schools will open on 4 January and secondary school classes opening are Form Two, Three, Four and Six,” said Mr Ndoro.

National Monuments and Museums of Zimbabwe Explains Why They Are Putting Up Mbuya Nehanda’s Statue

The Mbuya Nehanda statue project is essentially about remembering and paying respects, as a nation, as a people, to an ancestor whose contribution to our unfolding history deserves recognition.

Of course there are many such personalities in this country’s history but we have to start somewhere.

Nehanda is a spirit who operates through mediums.

There are known mediums of Nehanda before Nyakasikana inasmuch as there are some after her. Currently there are several claimants, dotted around the country.

The fact that we have a medium through whom we then interact and get guidance from Nehanda the spirit means that the spirit has personified itself through its medium.

We can represent the spirit through its medium. The medium is our means to the spirit.

If we therefore want to respect the spirit and to immortalize it through honoring by way of erecting a statue, we represent the spirit through its medium.

Statues are commonplace throughout the world world, including the Christian world. Zimbabwe a few years ago erected the statue of Father Zimbabwe (Joshua Nkomo), South Africa and Mozambique erected statues of their former departed leaders, Nelson Mandela and Samora Machel.

The United Kingdom and the rest of Europe and North America erect numerous statues of various persons regarded as significant contributors to their national histories.

They are recognizing the contributions of these people. They are celebrating them as distinguished departed citizens. They are not idols.

They have not turned them into Gods. They have made monuments out of their stories. The same applies in our case.

Mbuya Nehanda is not being turned into a God because of the statue.

As Zimbabweans, the statement we are making is that we’re thankful to Mbuya Nehanda for the courage and sacrifices she made through her spiritual leadership of the First Chimurenga and we want present and future generations to to remember those contributions and be inspired by them as they also become citizens who contribute to the common good.

It will be remembered that the Second Chimurenga that finally delivered independence and sovereignty to Zimbabweans was directly inspired by the First Chimurenga, in particular Mbuya Nehanda’s prophetic ‘my boned shall rise’ declaration just before she was hanged by the colonial administration for her role in that early struggle against our conquest by the British.

The statue is being erected by the people of Zimbabwe.

Whilst our appreciation of exactly how Mbuya Nehanda looked like is limited because there probably is only one photograph of her, there still is need for some degree of consensus on the image of her, notwithstanding the limitations related to this issue.

The opinions of the people matter.

The statue project commenced after relevant and appropriate procedures and protocols had been followed.

Rescue Operations At Ran Mine Stopped

Mines Minster Winston Chitando

Rescue operations at Ran Mine in Bindura where at least 10 miners were trapped in a disused mine shaft two weeks ago have stopped after the tunnel continued to collapse.

Mines and Mining Development Minister Winston Chitando said Government will soon move in to ensure that all mining activities were undertaken in accordance with the law in a safe manner.

This comes after a number of mine disasters have occurred in the past year because of illegal mining.

Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo who visited Ran Mine on Saturday, said search and rescue of the trapped had become difficult and Government will take a relief approach.

“This tragedy was attended by several ministries, including the technical ministry of Mines and Mining Development, engineers, provincial and national civil protection unit,” he said.

“Our first mode of operation is to search and rescue. We lost one volunteer and we retrieved one person. The situation has gone worse because of the incessant rains and the ground has become sensitive and it is collapsing.

“Some of the families are here and we might move into the relief situation. We must move into the relief approach which include psycho-social understanding of what has happened and work with the families.”

Chief Government Engineer Michael Munodawafa said rescue operations at the mine had stopped after the tunnel collapsed.

“The area where we pumped out water collapsed and we are trying to find a better way of dealing with the situation due to the instability of the ground,” he said.

“This is an old mine and at the bottom there is a deep void filled with water, in mining we call it an open stope. When the initial collapse happened, that is why water came up instead going down. De-watering of the tunnel released pressure and contributed to the continuous collapse.”

South African Professor Develops First Anti-Covid-19 Drug Treatment

Asian doctors attending to Covid-19 samples.

Vaccines are used as a preventative measure to prepare immune systems to fight off diseases and ideally prevent further infections but treatments are typically used when patients are already sick with a certain disease.

The clinical pharmacologist, who cannot be named as yet due to contractual obligations, lectures part-time and is a research fellow at the Durban University of Technology.

The professor told the Sunday Tribune the drug, known by the identification tag HIM20, was developed in May but was not yet available to the public as it was going through a second round of testing.

“It underwent clinical trials from May to November and was administered to 133 Covid-19 positive patients who presented at least three symptoms. 98.2% of patients were clear of all symptoms within 96 hours of initiating the drug therapy. Side effects were minimal in that 4% of patients presented with minor nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea,” he said.

The professor had a team of five doctors and pharmacists who assisted with the clinical trial.

They monitored compliance, side effects, adverse reactions and determining pharmacokinetic profiles of the drug.

The professor used his own funds for the research which was conducted under the auspices of the research company – I.M. Chemical Corporation.

“Covid-19 is triggered by the virus Saes-cov2. Thereafter it presents predominantly as an inflammatory disorder so signs and symptoms presented are consequences of inflammatory processes within the body. Common examples are fevers, sore throats and body pains. The question then arises – should anti-inflammatory drugs play a major role? The answer was a resounding no. My research proved the opposite to be true and this is what led me towards the synthesis of HIM20,” they said.

The clinical pharmacologist said patients above the age of 65 taking anti-inflammatory drugs for a host of conditions like rheumatoid arthritis were significantly more prone to contracting Covid-19.

“The body has a large number of inflammatory mediators and they are classified as cytokines. Common antiinflammatory drugs block one to two inflammatory mediators. Once a patient contracts Covid- 19 the body is flooded with inflammatory mediators, producing coronavirus symptoms. This flooding is referred to as the cytokine storm. Any Covid-19 treatment must have the capacity to block this storm,” he said.

They said the molecular design of HIM20 was to block the release of multiple inflammatory mediators amongst other effects.

“But with that said, 1.8% of patients did not respond to the HIM20 treatment. Two-thirds of these patients were diabetic. This group included diabetics. There seemed to be some yet unknown mechanism at play in these patients that prevented the therapeutic effect of HIM20. The other one-third of non-responsive patients were over the age of 74,” they said.

The clinical pharmacologist said two patient groups formed part of a second study to use HIM20 as a preventative against Covid-19.

“The same team is working on the second study and HIM20 will become available once our study and the registration process is completed.”

Speaking on the recent global developments on Covid-19 vaccines, the professor said data was still limited which made things difficult.

“A vaccine is purely prophylactic and once a patient has contracted Covid-19, the vaccine is useless. Also, the current iterations of Covid-19 vaccines are not orally effective and must be injected. But HIM20 is orally effective and may be self-administered.”

Eleven vaccines are currently in clinical testing with nine already entered in a partnership with COVAX.

The country currently hosts clinical vaccine trials by Johnson&johnson alongside a partnership between Astrazeneca Plc and the University of Oxford.

On Thursday President Cyril Ramaphosa reiterated the country’s engagement with the World Health Organization’s Covid-19 Global Vaccine Access Facility initiative.

80 Year Old Gogo Killed In Violent Storms That Ravaged Gokwe North Last Week

State Media

Some of the destruction made by the storms

AN 80-year-old granny died after strong winds that ravaged Gokwe North destroyed her house and left about 100 people homeless.

The granny, who was admitted to Gokwe District Hospital, died from injuries sustained after the house collapsed on her last Friday.

Schools and a clinic where not spared by the storm.

Gokwe North District Development Coordinator (DDC) Mr Martin Musakanda who also chairs the district civil protection unit (CPU) said the mishap follows heavy rains that have been pounding the country in recent days.

“The storm accompanied by strong winds destroyed infrastructure across the district. We have a granny who passed on after a house fell on her. A 15-year-old girl who was also injured when the house she was in collapsed, is recovering well at hospital,” said Mr Musakanda.

He said six schools had their roofs blown off by the strong winds.

“Tafara, Zvanaka, Tenda, Mutakayi, Chiwodza, Budiriro and Vhumba primary schools as well as Gumunyu High School, had roofs of their classrooms blown off,” he said.

Mr Musakanda said more than 100 people were left homeless after their homes were destroyed by the violent storm.

He said value of the property destroyed is estimated to be US$514 000.

“We have since sent a report to the national CPU and we are waiting for their response” he said.

Mr Musakanda said his committtee was mobilising resources to put up temporary shelters as well as provide food to affected families as it awaits further instructions from Government.

“We have mobilised tents and will use some classrooms to accommodate some of the affected people.

“We have since engaged development partners who are willing to come on board to assist us,” said Mr Musakanda.

Gokwe is flood prone and Mr Musakanda said his committee was on alert.

Meanwhile, a 42-year-old woman under Chief Tshitshi in Mangwe District of Matabeleland South Province was struck and killed by lightning last Tuesday.

Acting Matabeleland South Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Loveness Mangena confirmed the incident and identified the deceased as Lista Mlalazi (42).

“The woman was coming from a women`s club meeting and was about 50 metres away from her homestead when the lightning struck,” she said.

Women Sidelined In ZANU PF Elections – Chinomona

Mabel Chinomona

The ruling Zanu- PF Secretary for Women’ League, Mable Chinomona has bemoaned lack of participation of women in the ongoing District Coordinating Committee (DCC) elections.

In the DCC elections, positions up for grabs include Secretary for Legal Affairs, Gender and Culture, Education, Information and Publicity, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment among others.

The ruling party suspended the elections for position of Secretary of the Veterans of the liberation struggle as it is still in process of coming up with structures at district level.

Other positions not being voted for are Secretary for Youth and Secretary for Women Affairs.

Chinomona said Emmerson Mnangagwa has been advocating for women empowerment, a development she said should have encouraged more women to contest the DCC elections.

She said the DCC elections were a platform for women to take leadership matters to a new level.

Chinomona said there was a need for the league to engage women and as such workshops will be held to educate women on the importance of taking up leadership positions in all sectors of the economy.

Addressing a Press conference in Gweru at the weekend, Chinomona said women have continued to confine themselves to the periphery in the party while men continue to occupy influential positions.

“There is a tendency to believe that the chairmanship position is for men and what is painful is that women have accepted this,” she said. Chinomona said it was high time women take up influential positions and take the lead.

“There is fear among women to contest their male counterparts for positions in the party and what has worsened the situation is that most women lack resources to campaign. Women should take up positions not just in the party but also in different sectors of the economy like mining and agriculture,” she said.

Chinomona said President Mnangagwa was pro women empowerment and urged women to take advantage of the Government stance.

“President Mnangagwa is pro women empowerment and it’s unfortunate that women are not voting for other women despite constituting 52 percent of the population. We will continue to engage women at workshops to encourage them to be active and contest positions in the party and the economy,” she said.

Chinomona also urged women to venture into businesses in order to empower themselves and stop depending on men for livelihoods.

“We want a situation where women can campaign using their own resources and get these positions,” she said.

Acting Zanu PF spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa said few women had submitted CVs for DCC posts.

He said the revolutionary party was worried about the low numbers and urged women to contest the elections.

Meanwhile, Chinamasa said the DCC elections had spilled into yesterday because of logistic problems following heavy rains across the country. – Herald

Horrific Rains Hit Vic Falls

Heavy rains that have been falling in Victoria Falls since Saturday have exposed the municipality’s poor drainage system after flash floods swept through houses and destroyed roads in Mkhosana suburb.
While no fatalities or serious destruction of infrastructure have been reported, residents lost groceries and other property that got submerged in water which in some cases was at knee level.

Some were stuck indoors as they could not go out of their houses which were literally marooned. There are few storm drains in Mkhosana and water flows on the surface whenever it rains. Poor drainage is a major concern which residents even raised during budget consultation meetings.

There is also concern about random littering as garbage including diapers, plastic bottles and papers have blocked storm drains. The worst affected is ward 11 in Mkhosana suburb where most of the road network is not tarred.

Residents raised concern after roads and some houses were flooded. A news crew visited some of the affected sections of the suburb and observed that some roads were flooded.

Several houses were literally marooned as a result of storm drains that have been blocked by litter and sand.

Some residents were digging trenches to redirect water from their houses while others were using rubbish bins and containers to scoop the water. Residents sent an SOS to municipality management on Saturday.

Similar rains were experienced yesterday morning thereby worsening the situation. This comes as the Meteorological Services Department has predicted countrywide rains and emphasised the need for caution.

Council management and engineers visited some of the affected sections to assess the situation. The Chronicle was told that residents’ property was damaged as a result of the flooding.

Victoria Falls Combined Residents Association chairman Mr Kelvin Moyo blamed council for not being proactive.

“There is a need to prepare for the rain season. Council should clear storm drains before the rains. We are going towards getting city status and we are experiencing signs of lack of competence as far as service delivery is concerned which is worrying,” he said.

During the municipality 2021 budget consultation meetings residents complained about poor drainage and implored council to set aside funds to construct storm drains and surface roads especially in Mkhosana.

Ward 11 councillor Edmore Zhou said the town has never experienced such flooding before. “The situation is bad and this has never happened hence no one was prepared.

“We visited some of the affected places and the challenge is the drainage system which needs fixing.

“Our biggest problem in Mkhosana is the gradient which doesn’t allow water to flow down to Chinotimba and all the rain water drains towards VID side and houses in the area get flooded. There is a need for storm drains,” said Cllr Zhou.

He said construction of storm drains and water reservoirs should be a priority in Mkhosana. Cllr Zhou also urged residents to take precautionary measures to avoid damage to property or loss of life.

“We visited the affected areas with engineers and we wish something can be done as a matter of urgency. While the council is trying to work on a solution, residents should also try to protect their property by blocking water from flowing into houses,” said the councillor. -Chronicle

Police Arrest Two Over Fake Covid-19 Test Certificates

State Media

Police spokesperson Paul Nyathi

ABOUT 330 blank stamped fake Covid-19 certificates were recovered by police from two suspects at Chirundu Border Post, as law enforcement agents intensify operations to weed out criminals engaging in fake documents.

The two suspects are Simbarashe Tsetse (24) and Freddy Katamanga (31).

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests in a statement.

“They were arrested on December 3, 2020 for originating fake Covid-19 certificates for travellers at Chirundu Border Post,” he said.

“The suspects were arrested after a tip off from members of the public, leading to the recovery of 334 blank stamped Covid-19 certificates, two tubes containing glass capillaries, two testing kits, two receipt books, three plastic capillaries, Covid-19 test record register, methylated spirit bottle and one packet of new needles in their office at Self-Med Complex.”

Asst Comm Nyathi said the duo had no medical qualifications and had just received US$120 from two complainants who intended to cross the border.

Following an investigative article published by The Herald recently exposing some individuals working at Harare Central and Chitungwiza Central hospitals for issuing fake Covid-19 certificates, police vowed to investigate and bring to book all those who engage in the illegal practice.

According to the Zimbabwean regulations following World Health Organisation guidelines, travellers must produce a PCR Covid-19 clearance certificate issued by a recognised health facility within 48 hours before leaving the country.

Most institutions charge around US$65 for the required PCR test for Covid-19, a test that is required within 48 hours before leaving the country by road or air.

To avoid the inconvenience or to cut costs, some wishing to cross the borders have resorted to paying US$20 bribes to health staff in order to be issued with a fraudulent certificate showing they tested negative to Covid-19.

Cross-border traders, job-seekers and others desperate for cheaper certificates are the major clients of the corrupt cartels.

Three More People Killed In Formal Mine Horrific Accident

Inside a formal mine shaft

Three miners died last week at Kunyu Mine in Mudzi after they were crushed by two ore wagons which fell into a shaft.

Two of the victims died on the spot, while the other died on admission to hospital.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.

“A mine accident occurred on December 1, 2020 at Kunyu Mine, Banze, Mudzi where three miners lost their lives,” he said. “Two ore wagons fell into an inclined mine shaft and crushed the miners.

“Two of the victims died on the spot while the other died on admission at All Souls Mission Hospital. Investigations into the incident are in progress.”

The incident comes after at least 30 illegal gold miners are reportedly trapped underground at Bindura Ran Mine after the shaft collapsed recently.

Only six miners were rescued at the mine. Early last month, bodies of two of the five miners trapped after a mine shaft collapsed at Task Mining Syndicate in Chegutu on September 8 were retrieved by artisanal miners who were continuing to search for the other three bodies.

The body of Shingai Gwatidzo (20), which was among the two that were retrieved on Saturday was buried at Borgan Villa resettlement area in Mhondoro.

It was in an advanced state of decomposition.

Fellow artisanal miners defied a Government directive to stop the search for the bodies of their trapped colleagues after all hope was abandoned of finding the five alive.

A police officer attached to the CID Minerals Flora and Fauna Unit was also trapped to death when the ground he was standing on carved and gave in at Magobo illegal mining site in Shamva.
