FULL TEXT: Oxford University Community Condemns Political Persecution In Zimbabwe

We, the undersigned students, staff, affiliates and alumni of the University of Oxford, condemn the violent suppression of political expression and peaceful protest in Zimbabwe, the arrests of citizens engaging in safe and peaceful protest and the abduction, harassment and torture of Zimbabweans.

We call on the Government of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe Defence Forces and the security services to end the de facto state of emergency that is restricting movement in the urban centres of Zimbabwe. It is clear that this action is designed primarily to suppress criticism of the government rather than to address Covid-19.

We are concerned about the growing number of people who have been arrested or abducted for criticising the government. This includes journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono, and opposition political leader, Jacob Ngarivhume, who are still in custody after being arrested for calling for peaceful protests against corruption on social media and denied bail. Chin’ono had been instrumental in exposing corruption relating to the procurement of Covid-19 supplies.

We are alarmed at the arrests on 31 July of many Zimbabweans, including award-winning novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga, several opposition political leaders including spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere, disability rights activists such as Henry Chivhanga, as well as many more ordinary citizens for doing nothing more than stepping onto the street holding the national flag or placards, peacefully and in small, socially distanced demonstrations.

This is in flagrant violation of section 59 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, which guarantees the right to demonstrate peacefully, and of Article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Zimbabwe is a party.

While some of these people have been released on bail, others are still in custody and all are facing criminal charges simply for exercising their constitutional rights.

These arrests follow the spate of recent arrests of teachers, nurses, trade unionists, students, human rights lawyers, constitutionalism activists and others, on charges that arise from nothing more than demanding decent work conditions and publicly speaking out against corruption.

The arrests and detentions are happening at a time when Covid-19 cases are on the rise in Zimbabwe and these actions expose those detained to a high risk of contracting the disease in detention.

We demand that all political prisoners are released immediately and the baseless charges against them are dropped.

We are particularly alarmed at the abductions and torture of Zimbabweans, most recently Tawanda Muchehiwa, who was abducted by state agents in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Republic Police during the 31 July protests and tortured, following several similar instances recently. We strongly condemn these practices and call for immediate investigations and prosecution of the perpetrators.

We call on the Southern African Development Community and the African Union to discharge their responsibilities to issue statements condemning the arrests, abductions and harassment of citizens and activists in Zimbabwe and to take action against Zimbabwe.

We call on the United Nations and its special mechanisms to actively monitor the situation in Zimbabwe, condemn human rights violations and take appropriate action against the Government of Zimbabwe.

We call on the international community as a whole – governments, civil society and the people of the world – to stand in solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe and to speak out against the violations of human rights and suppression of democracy in Zimbabwe.

“We Are Watching You,” Valerio Sibanda Warns Social Media Users

ZBC

Valerio Sibanda

COMMANDER Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Philip Valerio Sibanda says Zimbabweans should guard against being misled by divisive elements who use social media to peddle lies about the country’s security sector.

He was speaking in an interview with ZBC News ahead of this Tuesday’s commemorations to mark Defence Forces Day.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, will today lead the nation in celebrating the Defence Forces Day, a day set aside to pay tribute to the country’s security forces.

The celebrations of the Defence Forces come a day after the country celebrated the National Heroes Day, in a virtual ceremony in response to the Covid-19 lockdown limiting public gatherings.

“We are forever grateful to our security service sector, which continues to protect our independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.
Usually, thousands throng the National Sports Stadium on this day, but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, this year celebrations will be different after authorities took preventative measures to curb the spread of the pandemic that has killed more than 100 people in Zimbabwe.

In an interview to mark the day, Commander Defence Forces General Philip Valerio Sibanda said the commemorations gave the nation an opportunity to reflect on the historical formation of the ZDF.
“The day is important because the commemorations give the nation an opportunity to reflect on the historical formation of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces in 1980.

“The ZDF were formed from the formerly warring forces of ZANLA and ZIPRA on one hand and the Rhodesian forces on the other.
“It is pleasing to note that the Zimbabwe Defence Forces has since its formation transformed into a formidable, loyal and disciplined force.

“The country should take this opportunity to pay tribute to members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces. These are men and women who have dedicated their lives to safeguard the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The celebrations are also a statement of intent that members of the ZDF are ready to pay the supreme sacrifice in defence of the country,” he said.

The Zimbabwe Defence Forces plays a key role not only in protecting the country’s territorial integrity and the upholding of peace, but also carries various community programmes across the country as part of its civil relations with the people.

In 2019 and 2020, the ZDF carried out community programmes, which included the construction of classrooms blocks, teachers’ accommodation and also intervened in communities that were hit by the Cyclone Idai disaster.

Covid-19 Stats Update

Actives cases have increased to 3 170 while 20 new recoveries were recorded. The cumulative number of recorded cases is now 4 818 and COVID-19 deaths remain at 104.

Joe Biden Tackles The African-American Vote, Picks Kamala Harris As Running Mate

Reuters

Joe Biden and US senator Kamala Harris shake hands.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Tuesday tapped senator Kamala Harris as his choice for vice-president, making her the first black woman on a major party presidential ticket in US history and providing him with a partner well suited to go on the attack against Republican President Donald Trump.

With social unrest over racial injustice and police brutality against black Americans rocking the country for months, Biden had been under increasing pressure to select a woman of colour as his running mate. She is also the first Asian-American on a major presidential ticket.

Biden and Harris will make their first joint appearance as a presidential ticket on Wednesday in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, the campaign said.

In Harris, a senator from California who made her own run for the White House before ending it and endorsing Biden, he gains a deeply experienced politician already battle-tested by the rigours of the 2020 presidential campaign as they head into the final stretch of the November 3 election.

“I have the great honour to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate,” Biden said on Twitter.

Harris, who became only the Senate’s second black woman in its history when she was elected in 2016, will be relied on to help drive the African-American vote — the Democratic Party’s most loyal constituency. Four years ago, the first dip in black voter turnout in 20 years contributed to Democrat Hillary Clinton’s upset loss to Trump.

Biden, whose foundering campaign was rescued by black voters in South Carolina’s primary in February, needs their strong support against Trump. It will be crucial in battleground states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin that Trump won by the slimmest margins in 2016 but where opinion polls now show him trailing his Democratic rival.

The black vote is also central to Biden’s hopes of winning southern states Georgia and Florida that Trump carried four years ago but that opinion polls indicate will be competitive this year.

Biden served as vice-president for eight years under President Barack Obama, the first black US president.

Harris, 55, a former prosecutor and state attorney-general in California, is well known for her sometimes aggressive questioning style in the Senate, most notably of Brett Kavanaugh during his 2018 supreme court confirmation hearing.

As a presidential candidate, she also took Biden to task in a nationally televised debate over his past stances on mandatory busing for students as a means to desegregate schools. Some Biden advisers have said the attacks made them question whether she would be a trusted working partner because of her political ambitions.

While that exchange failed to boost her White House hopes, the Biden campaign will now look for her to train her prosecutorial fire on Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence. Harris is scheduled to debate Pence on October 7 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Biden’s age, 78, has led to broad speculation he will serve only one term, making Harris a potential top contender for the nomination in 2024. Some of his allies were concerned that would make her a bad fit for the No 2 job and questioned her loyalty.

Biden publicly committed to choosing a woman as his running mate in a March debate and had considered other former presidential rivals such as senators Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren.

After the protests that erupted over the May 25 death in custody of George Floyd, a black man, at the hands of a white policeman in Minneapolis, Biden switched focus.

Harris will be confirmed as Biden’s running mate at the Democratic convention that begins on Monday, where Biden will also be formally nominated to challenge Trump.

Harris has become a key ally for Biden at a time when race has been thrust to the forefront of the campaign.

After Floyd’s death, she became a prominent voice in the push for racial justice and police reform, standing with marchers and sparring with Republicans in the US Senate over reform legislation.

Harris at times came under criticism from some in the black community and from progressive advocates for her record as California attorney-general where, they say, she did not do enough to investigate police shootings and too often sided with prosecutors in wrongful conviction cases.

Her defenders say she has always been reform-minded — and point to her record in the Senate, where she has championed a police-reform bill among other measures. Harris has said she became a prosecutor to bring a more progressive approach to the office.

The daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, Harris has knocked down barriers throughout her career. She was the first woman to serve as San Francisco’s district attorney, elected to that office in 2003, and the first woman to serve as California’s attorney-general, elected to that office in 2010.

Biden had also considered former Obama administration national security adviser Susan Rice, Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and representative Val Demings, a former police chief in Orlando, Florida. Biden also considered Asian-American senator Tammy Duckworth and New Mexico governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

Historically, the vice-presidential nominee has been the one to take the lead in criticising the opposing ticket, though Trump has largely shredded that tradition. Brian Brokaw, a California political consultant who managed Harris’ campaigns for attorney-general and Senate, said Harris fits that role well.

“She is someone who can really make Republicans quake in their boots,” Brokaw said.

Ramaphosa To Decide On Next Move After Mnangagwa Kicked Out His Envoys

State Media

Mnangagwa with Ramaphosa

Envoys sent by African Union (AU) chairperson, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa to assess the political situation in Zimbabwe flew back to Pretoria yesterday where they are expected to report to their principal.

The three-member delegation returned a day after meeting President Mnangagwa where they were ordered back home without meeting with opposition parties, civil society and churches as was originally scheduled.

Former South African Minister of Safety and Security Dr Sydney Mufamadi was leading the team which comprised former Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete and former South Africa’s Minister of Public Service and Administration Advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi.

In an interview yesterday, South African Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Mphakama Mbete said the trio left for Pretoria to brief President Ramaphosa.

“They have just left. They are now going to brief their principal, His Excellency President Ramaphosa. This is after they met His Excellency President Mnangagwa in Harare on Monday,” said Mr Mbete.

He said it was up to President Ramaphosa to decide on the next course of action.

“The envoys were here at the instigation of their principal, who is President Ramaphosa. At the moment I cannot tell what is going to happen because it depends on President Ramaphosa who sent them here.

“It is him who will decide what course of action depending on what he would have been told, but they returned today after their meeting with President Mnangagwa,” said Mr Mbete.

The three came to Zimbabwe to assess the political situation in Zimbabwe after a sustained social media onslaught against the Harare administration.

Briefing journalists on Monday after meeting President Mnangagwa, Dr Mufamadi said they are in the country as envoys of the President of South Africa.

He said they had exchanged views with President Mnangagwa on the situation in the country.

“We exchanged views with his counterpart President Mnangagwa. In other words, we were listening to the state of the situation, what is being done or the intentions to do extra things and so on,” he said.

Dr Mufamadi said the outcome of the meeting will only be made public by President Ramaphosa after getting the views from all parties.

“We are not going to respond for our President through the media. We will be reporting to the President first, who will then interact with the public in due course,” said Dr Mufamadi.

Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Mr Nick Mangwana last week said Zimbabwe has nothing to hide, as the so-called crisis was merely a creation of the nation’s detractors.

The three are coming to understand “the difficulties that Zimbabwe is facing”, following a wave of sustained attacks by opposition politicians, civic society activists and exiled G40 fugitives — Saviour Kasukuwere, Walter Mzembi, Jonathan Moyo and Patrick Zhuwao.

The anti-Zimbabwe crusade follows the flop of the protests that had been planned for July 31, which had been heavily-funded by Western embassies aimed at toppling President Mnangagwa and his Government.

Mr Mangwana said Zimbabwe and South Africa maintain cordial relations since they share a similar history of fighting and winning the war against ruthless colonial regimes.

Facebook Announces Restrictions on Political Content

VOA

Facebook announced new regulations Tuesday that prevent U.S. publishers with demonstrated ties to political groups from running advertisements that look like news reports on the social networking site.

Facebook has been under pressure to manage disinformation appearing on its pages during the coronavirus pandemic and as the country prepares to vote for president in November.

The rules announced Tuesday permit publishers with political connections to register with the site, but they will be excluded from using Facebook’s “news” page for their messages.

“The news pages with these affiliations will not be eligible for inclusion in Facebook News,” the social media giant said.

Previously, such organizations were labeled “news exempt,” meaning that their content was not labeled as political.

Facebook defines a “political entity” as “an organization, company, or other group whose predominant purpose is to influence politics and elections,” such as political action groups and organizations designated as social welfare organizations by the Internal Revenue Service.

A “political person” includes candidates for public office, those whose positions are subject to legislative confirmation, such as Supreme Court justices and others, who possess the authority to enforce political power.

The Columbia Journalism Review published a report Tuesday outlining “new networks of shadowy, politically backed ‘local news websites,’” distributing domestic and internationally-sourced disinformation surrounding the U.S. election.

Several tech companies have cracked down on political exploitation of their platforms in recent weeks. Google recently told media company Axios it was planning to implement a similar ban in September, and Twitter temporarily suspended the account of the president’s son, Donald Trump, Jr., in July after he promoted the drug hydroxychloriquine as a treatment for coronavirus. Hydroxychloriquine’s efficacy in treating COVID-19 has been dismissed by medical experts after several clinical trials.

“We Take Pride In Our Defence Forces,” Mnangagwa’s Full Speech Showering Soldiers With Praises

President Emmerson Mnangagwa addressing the Defence Forces commemoration on line.

Members of Parliament; Members of Zimbabwe Defence Forces; Ladies and Gentlemen; Comrades and Friends;

It is my singular honour and privilege to address the nation on this special day which marks the 40th Anniversary of our Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF).

The attainment of independence in 1980 signalled the advent of majority rule and the formation of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF). The bringing together of ZANLA, ZIPRA forces on one side and the Rhodesian Forces on the other was a daunting and challenging exercise.

I was privileged to chair the Joint Command for the integration of the three forces. Having fought for a united Zimbabwe, the formation of a unified defence force with a single purpose of defending our territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence was indeed gratifying accomplishment.

Today, we celebrate the numerous achievements scored over the last 40 years since the formation of the ZDF.

This occasion is happening on the backdrop of successive accomplishments by our Defence Forces to defend our motherland Zimbabwe from detractors, divisive elements and enemies.

The commemorations which we are holding this year under the theme, “ZDF: Celebrating 40 Years of Excellent Service to the People”, are taking place under yet another wave of aggression manifesting through illegal sanctions, hostile anti-Zimbabwe propaganda, mounted on social media platforms, and other forms of asymmetrical warfare meant to break the unity within our forces.

This has been coupled with the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

EDITORIAL COMMENT : Responsibility must accompany free speech
Sadly, the virus has claimed some decorated members of the ZDF family in the name of Air Chief Marshal (Rtd) Perrance Shiri, who was a long time Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe and Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement and the ZDF Director of Public Relations, Colonel Overson Mugwisi, among others.

May their souls rest in eternal peace.

Fellow Zimbabweans;

In executing its constitutional mandate, the ZDF has since its formation acquitted itself with distinction and high professionalism and for this they deserve a big compliment. Zimbabwe has continued to enjoy peace largely attributable to the ZDF’s vigilance, loyalty, commitment and dedication to their constitutional obligation of defending the country and its people.

The resultant peace and tranquillity has provided a great stimulus for socio-economic development over the years.

Whilst maintaining peace in the country, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces continue to participate in regional and international peace keeping missions under the auspices of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).

Our officers, men and women of the ZDF perform their duties with excellence and unparalleled dedication, as they contribute towards enhancing regional and continental integration.

In September 2019, the ZDF participated in the Ligwalagwala Air Show in Eswatini while preparations for participation in the Russian International Military Games and Special Forces Exercise CHOMELA to be held in the Republic of Botswana are at advanced stages. Their involvement in these international activities exposes our forces to the use of modern military equipment as well as strengthening ties between our forces and allies.

Additionally, memories of Cyclone Idai in 2019 bring to mind the Defence Forces’ significant role in search and rescue operations as well as provision of food and medical assistance to flood victims. They have also helped in restoring the damaged infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools and clinics.

All these activities demonstrate the commitment of the Defence Forces to serve the nation and the close relationship that exists between them and the generality of the Zimbabwean population. This rich history of assisting communities is commendable and must continue to be the hallmark of our Defence Forces.

I commend the Zimbabwe Defence Forces for embracing my Government’s Vision of attaining an Upper Middle Income Economy by 2030.

In that regard, the ZDF engineers and artisans are engaged in various construction projects to precipitate development of our communities throughout the country.

Comrades and friends; the National Mine Clearance Unit of the Zimbabwe National Army Engineer Corps is also making significant progress in clearing anti-personnel landmines laid by the Rhodesian Regime during the liberation struggle. These include areas along the Sango Border Post to Crooks Corner Minefield. Government is committed to clearing all landmines across the country to give full meaning to independence, freedom and development for the affected communities.

Co-operating partners, Hazardous Life Support Organisation (HALO) Trust, Mines Advisory Group (MAG) and Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) are also progressing well in similar demining operations. Let me take this opportunity to express my Government’s sincere appreciation for the assistance we are getting from these organisations.

I am aware of the sacrificial nature and service ethos of the Defence Forces, however, my administration remains determined to improve the salaries and conditions of service for our forces. Housing, transport and medical facilities among other requirements are being improved in recognition of the role and sacrifices made by our Defence Forces in the conduct of their duties.

Mobility, requisite training equipment and Research and Development needs will be equally funded to ensure the modernisation and improvement of our national defence capabilities.

With regard to the War Veterans Affairs, my Government has resuscitated the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Bill which has now gone past the second reading stage in Parliament. The passing of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Bill into Law will repeal the War Veterans Act and the Ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees Act and take on board the previously excluded categories of the veterans. I am confident that upon its enactment, most of the welfare issues of veterans of the liberation struggle will be resolved.

Recognising the immense contribution made by veterans of our liberation struggle, I urge them to build on this rich legacy by taking full advantage of the empowerment opportunities availed in all sectors of the economy and the implementation of the devolution policy.

Fellow Zimbabweans; Our battle with Covid-19 pandemic requires discipline, bravery and unity which are embodied in the personalities we are celebrating today. We must be united and fight this invisible enemy together. It is our collective responsibility to protect our nation, our families and our beloved ones.

As responsible citizens, let us all co-operate with our security services, assisted by the ZDF as they enforce our national laws. We commend the ZDF for continuing to be a people’s army, a reputation it has built over the years.

In conclusion, I want to thank you all for joining the entire Zimbabwe Defence Forces family in commemorating this special day, the ZDF 40th Anniversary. Thank you, once again for remaining calm and peaceful in the wake of some misguided calls for violent protests and demonstrations by the opposition elements with support from foreign and civil society supporters and backers.

You have shown your patriotism and love for peace and tranquillity.

To the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, as a nation we take pride in you and we thank you for continuously defending our sovereignty and territorial integrity from all contemporary threats.

Happy 40th Anniversary!

God bless you all.

God bless Zimbabwe.

I thank you.

Zanu PF Makes A New Parliamentary Appointment

Priscilla Chigumba

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has gazetted the appointment of Esther Nyathi as Matabeleland South Proportional Representative Member of the House of Assembly after Zanu PF nominated her to replace Alice Ndlovu who died in December last year.

The announcement was made by ZEC chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba in a Government Gazette published last week.

“ZEC has gazetted the appointment of Esther Nyathi, the nominee put forward by ZANU PF, as a party list/proportional representation (women’s quota) member of the National Assembly. The appointment is in terms of section 39(7)(a) of the Electoral Act and with effect from the 31st July 2020,” reads the notice.

Justice Chigumba said Nyoni was a registered voter in Matabeleland South Province and fulfilled the requirement of the Electoral Act.

“It is hereby notified, in terms of section 39(7)(a) of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2:13), that Esther Nyathi a registered voter in Ward 11 of Insiza Rural District Council of Ntute Primary School, P.O Box 113, Filabusi, Insiza, Matabeleland South Province, who was nominated by Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) party to fill the vacancy in the National Assembly Party list that occurred following the death of Alice Ndlovu, has been appointed as Party list member of the National Assembly, with effect from the date of publication of the notice.”

Ndlovu, who was elected as MP during the 2018 harmonised elections died in December last year after succumbing to kidney failure.

She was 63.

The appointment of Nyathi come as ZEC has also declared 15 seats in the National Assembly and Senate vacant after the MDC-T recalled some of its legislators.

In a gazetted notice recently, Justice Chigumba said ZEC had been formally notified by Parliament of the 15 vacancies.

Senators elected on the party lists and the extra women Members in the National Assembly elected by proportional representation are chosen by political parties in proportion to the votes received by their candidates in the constituency elections to the National Assembly.

If one of these seats falls vacant the original party nominates the successor.

Hopewell Chinono Back In Court Today For Fresh Bail Application

State Media

Hopewell Chinono being led back to prison after court.

Investigative Jornalist Hopewell Chinono is today expected to make a fresh bail application on changed circumstances on charges of inciting public to stage violent demonstrations on the July 31.

Chin’ono, through his lawyer Ms Beatrice Mtetwa, wanted to make the application last week but Harare regional magistrate Mr Ngoni Nduna ordered him to return to court today for his fresh bail bid.

The State led by Mr Michael Reza had indicated that it was ready to hear his application and respond on a later date.

The High Court threw out his appeal for bail after noting that the trial magistrate’s decision was properly arrived at when he initially dismissed his at the lower court.

In denying him bail Mr Nduna noted that he had shown some defiance in the face of the State which was calling for banning the protests.

Also Justice Tawanda Chitapi in his decision to deny Chin’ono bail said: “In disposing of the matter, I determine that the appellant (Chin’ono) has failed to demonstrate any misdirection of fact, law or both made by the learned magistrate in the court a quo (lower court) as would justify interference with his judgment.

“In consequence therefore, the order I make is as follows . . .The appeal be and it is hereby dismissed.”

Justice Chitapi said releasing Chin’ono might enable him to continue with his campaign as there was no condition discernible capable of restraining him if he granted bail.

“The attitude of the appellant was therefore one of defiance of State authority on the basis of a claim of right. In such circumstances the learned magistrate cannot be faulted in his reasoning,” said justice Chitapi.

New Heroes For Bulawayo

Busani Mthombeni

SOUTH Africa-based Highlanders member Nodumo Nyathi has been receiving rave reviews across the club’s social media platforms for spearheading Bosso’s debt clearance campaign that was launched in May.

Nyathi has been bestowed with living hero status for leading the drive that resulted in the club wiping its legacy debt that stood at $862 868 when the campaign started.

The initiative saw Nyathi and his team delivering the last payment of $410 000 to the club last Friday.

It was good news for Bosso family, as the debt clearance came just before Zimbabwe celebrated Heroes Day yesterday.

Nodumo Nyathi

Nyathi’s resilience after an initial attempt to raise funds for Highlanders failed in 2018 rightly earned him the hero status.

In September 2018, Nyathi launched a fundraising initiative aimed at raising about R30 million to clear the Highlanders debt but it failed.

However, in May this year, Nyathi, who is chairman of the Highlanders Supporters Association South African chapter, remodelled the campaign, which initially targeted at least 1 000 Bosso fans to contribute a once-off R500 payment to help the club clear its debt.

The 2018 campaign ran under the banner R30 challenge, targeting Bosso followers and sympathisers based in South Africa and abroad, who the supporters’ chapter believes to be more than one million.

Only 40 people contributed to the R30 challenge, raising R7 000.

Nyathi is happy that they have managed to help the club clear its debt with the contribution of less than 1 000 Highlanders fans.

“Having tried and failed in the first campaign, I looked at possible reasons why first the first attempt didn’t do well and I was convinced that it was not a failure, but just a learning curve. Convinced that Highlanders fans love the team and would like to play a part, I thought of remodelling the initiative,” said Nyathi.

“This time around the campaign was vigorous and there was a time I looked stupid to many people and some even told me straight in my face that I was nagging and boring them, but I never relented. When a few people supported the call, I immediately believed that this time the campaign would be a success and committed to doing everything for it to succeed,” he said.

Nyathi said it took a week to plan and strategise before launching the initiative after making some consultations.

He said besides the love Highlanders’ followers have for their club, team work, transparency and accountability made the campaign a success.

Every time someone made a contribution, organisers made it public by posting evidence on all social media platforms.

The exact number of people that contributed towards debt clearance will be announced once reconciliation has been completed.

The campaign had a slow take off, with $100 000 being raised in May and $300 000 in June.

Nyathi believes the campaign would have raised lots of funds had they opened mobile payment platforms.

“I believe if we had EcoCash, Telecash, One Wallet and Netcash platforms, we would have pushed more numbers in Zimbabwe. That’s the only thing I feel we could have done to raise more funds,” said Nyathi.

Contributions for the debt clearance were made to a South African back account and a BancABC account in Zimbabwe as well as online platforms.

The success of the campaign has left Nyathi pondering on what other project to embark on for Highlanders.

“Many possible projects have been discussed and are still to be discussed. We will pick quick wins first. What I’m certain of is that we will definitely embark on some projects, discussions are ongoing.

“I would like to thank everyone who has played a part in this campaign and would like to give special thanks to Busani Mthombeni, who I worked with to set up this project as we endured a number of sleepless nights before launching the campaign. I appreciate my wife and his wife for allowing us to do this as it really drained us. Special mention also goes to some ladies that played a pivotal role behind the scenes, mainly Mildred Maseko, Fiona Tshuma and Nokuthaba Nkala,” said Nyathi.

Musicians Bongani Mncube and Sebenzani Mehlokazulu were also roped in to drum support for the campaign.

Senior SA Government Official Admits There Is A Serious Political Crisis In Zimbabwe

 Emmerson Mnangagwa

South Africa’s Social Development Minister and ANC head of International Relations Lindiwe Zulu says there is indeed a political crisis in Zimbabwe that has to be dealt with to restore Zimbabwean citizens’ dignity.

Speaking during an interview with eNCA television, Zulu said the ANC should be frank with Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU PF party without necessarily breaking off relations between the two countries.

Zulu said Zimbabwean people have lost their dignity as most of them who are highly educated are being forced to do menial jobs in South Africa and having to cross the border into neighbouring countries illegally. She said:
In the ANC’s point of view indeed there is a political crisis in Zimbabwe and we have to be frank about it.

If we are to help the situation we have to be frank and honest about it because we are helping ourselves to answer the question: where is the dignity of all the Zimbabweans who are here, where is the dignity of the young women that I see washing cars, running around, some of whom are either teachers?

… where is the dignity in people being chased back at the border when crossing the border illegally?
These are some of the things we have to be very frank about without necessarily breaking relations because we are neighbours but we have to help each other to make sure that Zimbabwe is what Zimbabweans want it to be.

On Monday South African President Cyril Ramphosa sent three envoys to Harare where they met President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House on their mission to ascertain what is happening in Zimbabwe- eNCA

New Prisons Boss Named

Deputy Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu has been promoted to Commissioner-General of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) with effect from 1 November.

Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi yesterday confirmed the promotion by President Mnangagwa.

His promotion follows the retirement of Retired Major-General Paradzai Zimondi, who is now on pre-retirement leave, after 22 years at the helm.

Police Impound 6000 Kombis For “Breaching” Lockdown Regulations

Kombis

Over 6 000 kombis and pirate taxis have been impounded countrywide for violating Covid-19 regulations, as police reiterated that inter-city travel remained banned unless the traveller has exceptional circumstances that allow exemption.

At the inception of the Covid-19 lockdown in March, Government suspended inter-city travel and banned all long-distance buses to minimise the spread of Covid-19.

Only commercial vehicles ferrying and distributing goods were permitted to travel from one city to another, and beyond borders.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Friday warned anyone breaching the inter-city travel rules would be arrested and vehicles found transporting people would be impounded.

“People should take note that the country is still under national lockdown and as such, inter-city movements remain banned, he said. We reiterate that we don’t expect any unnecessary movements and that people should abide by the laws.

“People should put their safety and health first and should also assist in the maintenance of law and order.
“We also don’t expect any increase in the volumes of traffic on the roads.”

Recently, Government announced a curfew running from 6pm to 6am, during which time no movements are allowed except for essential service providers, as a way of containing the spread of Covid-19.

Asst Comm Nyathi said they received information that some pirate taxis and kombi owners were operating at night, putting themselves and passengers at risk.

Such operators risk being arrested, along with any members of the security teams that could be conniving with truckers and kombi operators in the ferrying of people illegally.

Covid-19 Inter-Ministerial Taskforce spokesperson Minister Monica Mutsvangwa recently called for behaviour change among Zimbabweans and reminded the nation that Covid-19 was real.

“People should not just wait to be seen by a police officer to wear a mask, she said.

People should not get into trucks where you know there is no social distance, no hygiene and when you actually know you should not be travelling.”-The Herald

Shock As Man Kills Friend Over R10 Debt

Knife

A GWANDA man has been arrested after he fatally stabbed his friend with an okapi knife in a dispute over a R10 debt.

Farai Moyo (28) of Spitzkop North Suburb was not asked to plead when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate, Ms Lerato Nyathi facing a murder charge. He was remanded in custody to August 21.

Prosecuting, Miss Ethel Mahachi said Moyo met the now deceased Moses Sibanda at Red Cross Business Centre in Gwanda when they had a misunderstanding over a R10 debt which the deceased owed him.

“On 26 February Farai Moyo and Moses Sibanda met at Red Cross Business Centre for a beer drink together with their peers. Moyo later confronted Sibanda and demanded back a R10 debt which he owed him.
Sibanda denied knowledge of the debt and insisted that he had given back Moyo his money which resulted in a misunderstanding.

“The two started fighting and Moyo drew an okapi knife and stabbed Sibanda twice on the stomach before fleeing the scene. Sibanda was rushed to the Gwanda Provincial Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” he said.

Miss Mahachi said the matter was reported to the police who conducted investigations leading to Moyo’s arrest.-Chronicle

“Go To Harare And Meet Opposition” Ramaphosa Advised After Envoys Deported By Mnangagwa.

By Patrick Guramatunhu | “The decision by the Zimbabwean government to deny President Cyril Ramphosa’s envoys an opportunity to meet with opposition leaders was not only disrespectful to the office of the African Union Chairperson, which Ramaphosa currently holds, but seems to confirm that the voices of the opposition and civil society are being muzzled in Zimbabwe,” the report says.

“The Democratic Alliance (DA) now calls on President Ramaphosa, in his capacity as AU Chairperson, to show leadership and go to Harare and meet with all the relevant stakeholders and get a balanced picture of the political crisis unfolding in the country,” it continues.

The decision by Mnangagwa to send back SA President Cyril Ramaphosa’s envoys without allowing them to meet any of the other stakeholders they had expressly said they wanted to meet was rude and disrespectful of the envoys and the man who had send them.

However contrary Mnangagwa’s point of view happened to be as to what is wrong in Zimbabwe, he still had to respect President Ramaphosa’s right to differ. By telling the envoys to their faces that they would not be allowed to meet anyone, after they had come this far, Mnangagwa knew he was throwing his weight around and doing so to humiliate Ramaphosa. That was uncouth and totally uncalled for!

Still, we cannot but ask why President Cyril Ramaphosa send these envoys when there is no hope of SADC getting solving the Zimbabwe crisis.

The root cause of Zimbabwe’s economic and political crisis is the country’s failure to hold free, fair and credible elections. The country has been stuck with this corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship for 40 years now. Four decades of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption have left the country in economic ruins and 34% of the population, according to a 2019 WB report, are living in extreme poverty.

After a particularly obnoxious 2008 election process in which Zanu PF blatantly cheated and used wanton violence to stay in power, SADC leaders refused to recognise Mugabe and his Zanu PF thugs as the constitutionally elected government. The regional body pressure Mugabe to accept the need to implement a raft of democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF cheating and using violence.

It is a great tragedy that not even one reform was implement during the 2008 to 2013 GNU. The MDC led by the late Morgan Tsvangirai, who were entrusted to implement the reforms, turned out to be breathtakingly corrupt and incompetent, they failed to implement even one reform in five years.

What is clear is that Mnangagwa will never implement any reforms, even if SADC could get him to agree to another power sharing arrangement with MDC. Since Zanu PF cannot be trusted to implement the reforms, the only option left is for the party to step down. SADC has already endorse Zanu PF as the legitimate government and so, unlike in 2008, the regional body has no leverage to force Zanu PF to step down.

So if President Cyril Ramaphosa should listen to the DA and “go to Harare and meet with all the relevant stakeholders”! Then he must be prepared to go the full hog and force Mnangagwa and Zanu PF to step down because President Ramaphosa will look really foolish if at the end of the new GNU no reforms are implemented and Zanu PF rigs the elections!

ZRP Says Chiyangwa A Clean Man Who Was Cheated On By Kamambo for ZIFA Top Job.

THIRTY-TWO Zifa councillors accused of receiving bribes in the run-up to the 2018 Zifa national elections that ushered in Felton Kamambo’s administration are set to appear in court on August 25.

According to police sources, all but five of the 32 councillors were co-operating with police investigations and their statements were recorded.

The five hostile councillors are from Midlands province and refused to give recorded statements, but they’re still set to appear in court in what would be a historic criminal case in the history of Zimbabwean football.

The 32 are alleged to have received bribes from a candidate in the build-up to the polls that saw Kamambo shocking then incumbent Phillip Chiyangwa for the Zifa top post.

Kamambo got 35 votes to Chiyangwa’s 24, while another challenger Gift Banda beat Omega Sibanda by 37 to 22 votes for the association’s vice-presidency post.

Investigations later revealed that some councillors’ mobile money wallets were credited with various amounts totalling $8 110.

The official exchange rate then of the local currency and US dollar was 1:1. Police also interviewed the Zifa executive committee member accused of “bribing” the councillors and he reportedly confirmed sending the money, but said it was for “lunch” and other “incidentals”.

Those targeted received amounts ranging from $100 to $1 700, depending on how “influential” they were perceived to be.

A councillor from Matabeleland North, one from Bulawayo and others from Harare are reported to have been the biggest beneficiaries.

One of the 32 accused councillors Mehluli Thebe, a Zifa Southern Region executive committee member, confessed in June to receiving $300 from one Robert, who said it was from Kamambo.

Thebe, however, insisted that the money sent via EcoCash was never hush money, but reimbursement for his traveling expenses to and from Hwange as well as accommodation.

Thebe said there was no way he would have used his own money to travel to Bulawayo to listen to a candidate, so those that wanted his ear met all his expenses.

Thebe also argued that his vote was a secret and no one can conclusively say the $300 he received influenced his voting.

A police source yesterday told Chronicle Sport that the dockets were ready and they’re confident they have a strong case for some convictions.

“Trial date is August 25, all the papers are ready. We interviewed all, but five councillors in this case.

The five from the Midlands were not co-operating, but that’s not a big issue, they will have their day in court,” said the police source. –Chronicle/state media

Councillor Kurauone Bail Application Hearing Set For Today

Godfrey Kurauone

11-08-2020

Reports from Masvingo Remand Prison indicate that jailed MDC Alliance Youth Organizer Clr Godfrey Kurauone is in a very unstable health condition.

Our Organizer is being denied access to proper medication and healthy food in contravention of the Prisons Act.

Clr Kurauone was arrested by the police when he went to report as per his bail conditions.

He is part of the long list of individuals whom the police say are wanted for ‘interviews’ in connection with 31 July protests against looting and corruption.

Kurauone was denied bail at Masvingo Magistrates Courts and his bail hearing appeal is set for Wednesday at Masvingo High Court.

It is very clear that Kurauone is a target of persecution by the state because he refused to yield to Emmerson Mnangagwa’s call for command fasting and went on a campaign to feed the underprivileged.

Just like Ian Smith regime, ED’s government now uses detention as a tool to silence critics as we have witnessed in the case of Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume who are also languishing at Chikurubi Maximum Prison for speaking out against corruption.

We want to make it clear that we are not going to be cowed into submission but will continue to raise our voices against societal ills like corruption.

We shall never relent!

Mnangagwa Not Ready To Resolve National Crisis Through Dialogue

Ramaphosa’s Envoy Arrives In Harare City

Farai Dziva|The MDC Alliance has accused Emmerson Mnangagwa of deliberately scuttling talks involving his administration, envoys from South Africa and the opposition.

This, the MDC Alliance argues is a deliberate plan to stifle genuine dialogue.

See statement below:

STATEMENT ON CANCELLATION OF MEETING BY SPECIAL ENVOYS APPOINTED BY CYRIL RAMAPHOSA

The MDC Alliance was formally requested to be available for a meeting today(yesterday), the 10 of August 2020, with the special envoys that were deployed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to Zimbabwe.

A delegation remained on standby from 10am this morning only to be advised at the end of the day that the special envoys would be returning to South Africa without meeting the MDC Alliance delegation in order to brief President Ramaphosa on the outcomes of their meeting with Mr Mnangagwa.

We can only assume that the failure to meet the MDC Alliance delegation was as a result of demands made by the Zanu PF delegation.

We reiterate that Zimbabwe is in a state of crisis that has been characterized by a de facto gate of emergency a crackdown on citizens, abductions arbitrary arrests of government critics and the political persecution of journalists. The Govemment in Harare is incapable of resolving these challenges because it lacks legitimacy.

We are of the firm view that any solution to the ongoing socio-economic challenges lies in resolving the political crisis and answering the outstanding legitimacy question.

It is clear that Mr Mnanangagwa is not ready to resolve the national crisis through genuine dialogue.

However, the deteriorating plight of the Zimbabwean people means that a political settlement is more urgent than before.

We will continue to mount pressure on Mnangagwa to engage in sincere dialogue untill national crisis is resolved.

MDC Alliance Message To Zimbabwe Defence Forces

Farai Dziva|The country’s main opposition party MDC Alliance has implored the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to protect the citizens of the country instead of being used used by politicians to suppress the will of the people.

See the MDC Alliance’s Defence Forces Day statement below:

Today, the MDC Alliance joins the nation in commemorating our Defence Forces.

It is 40 years since the Zimbabwe Defence Forces came into being through the integration of the ZIPRA and ZANLA liberation armies and the Rhodesian colonial forces in 1980.

This year’s commemoration of four decades of service presents an opportunity to reflect on the history and direction of our Defence Forces.

There would be no independent Zimbabwe were it not for ZIPRA and ZANLA, whose liberation war feats helped force the uncooperative colonial Rhodesian government to the 1979 Independence talks at Lancaster House.

We owe a great debt to the two liberation armies.
The constitutionally defined roles of the Defence Forces are to protect Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, to partake in the design of shared regional security architecture, to play a role in the preservation of international stability and peace, and to offer military assistance to civil authority in times of need.

Our Defence Forces have distinguished themselves in many of their constitutionally defined roles.

For 40 years they have safeguarded Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Our Defence Forces have played an active part in SADC’s security architecture. We take pride in their sterling performances in various peacekeeping missions in Africa and in the role they continue to play in aiding civil authority to save lives, deliver humanitarian aid and spearhead emergency reconstruction as they did in 2019 in the wake of Cyclone Idai.

However, the Defence Forces’ 40 years of existence have not been unblemished.

We note with particular sadness the politicisation of the Defence Forces for domestic repression and the continued militarisation of the civic space.

On this day of commemoration, we call on the Defence Forces to remember their constitutional mandate to the people of Zimbabwe.
We ask that they act in a manner that better serves the interests of all Zimbabweans, by fully complying with their constitutional obligation to respect the lives and dignity of the people in the execution of their duties.

In the new Zimbabwe, weapons and arms of war will never be deployed to support a political party’s partisan interests or impede the people’s right to demonstrate peacefully but instead support collective national interests taking due cognisance of the fundamental rights and diversity of the citizenry.

Perhaps, the most significant commemoration we can give to our Defence Forces on this day is to collectively call for the improvement of the conditions of service for rank and file soldiers as well as plead with each and every member of the Defence Forces to remember that the people of Zimbabwe are not their enemies, instead, we ask that they work to protect.
Happy Defence Forces’ Day.

All Eyes On Mnangagwa As 30 ZBC Employees Test Positive COVID-19.

All eyes are on ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa after thirty employees at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Authority (ZBC) tested positive for Covid-19.

ZBC employees usually frequent Mnangagwa’s offices for broadcasting services.

The COVID-19 is an infectious disease similar to the cold and travels in droplets when one coughs or sneezes. It also travels in other body fluids. Not only people who are infected with coronavirus are the carriers; Asymptomatic carriers don’t have any symptoms but pass on COVID-19.

The development follows last month’s incident where the public broadcaster had to suspend normal programming after one employee tested positive for the killer virus.

ZBC confirmed the latest development yesterday through a statement posted on microblogging site Twitter.

“The ZBC wishes to advise that 30 members of staff have tested positive for Covid-19. All 30 are currently isolating at home. The corporation continues to follow Government and World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines with periodic testing, premises disinfection and personal protective equipment provision,” tweeted the public broadcaster.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Mr Nick Mangwana, wished the infected staff a speedy recovery, while asserting that the media sector is part of the frontline workers.

He said five of the employees had mild symptoms while the rest were asymptomatic.

“We wish all ZBC staff members who tested positive a quick recovery. We are comforted in that of the 30 who are positive, only five are showing mild symptoms and the rest are asymptomatic. We have always said media staff are frontline workers. These results attest to that,” he said.

Frontline workers are among the worst affected by Covid-19 largely due to the nature of their jobs that puts them at high risk of contracting the virus.

Young Journalists Association (Yoja) last month lobbied the Government to minimise Press conferences among other face to face gatherings as they could increase the risk of journalists contracting Covid-19.

The association also encouraged media houses to equip journalists with tools to enable them to work from home.

The workplace continues to be one of the country’s Covid-19 hotspots as cases continue to rise.

On Monday the country had recorded 4 748 Covid-19 positive cases including 1 524 recoveries and 104 deaths.

Organisations such as Cimas, United Refineries, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra), Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe (CBZ) have had to temporarily shut down their premises after employees tested positive for Covid-19 to allow for disinfection of the affected areas. -Chronicle/state media

Zanu PF Youth Leader Denounces Government’s “Stupid Policies”

Emmerson Mnangagwa

The Zanu PF Bulawayo youth province has axed its district co-ordinating committee (DCC) secretary for youth affairs Munashe Mtutsa for allegedly undermining President Emmerson Mnangagwa after he questioned Government policy to compensate white former commercial farmers.

Mtutsa reportedly slammed the government’s move as a “stupid neo-liberal decision” in a WhatsApp group for ZANU PF members.

He allegedly wrote:
This is one of the stupid neo-liberal decisions with no iota of ideological clarity or basis.

A move made to impress Western countries thinking that this will reduce or have sanctions removed.

This is an insult to the thousands of people who perished in Zambia, Mozambique and Zimbabwe for the liberation of this country. It’s akin to urinating on the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Bulawayo acting provincial youth chairperson Sibongile Sibanda announced Mtutsa’s sacking, saying the youth support Mnangagwa “100%”.

Married Air Force Of Zim Officers In Deep Trouble For Having Extra Marital Relationship

TWO Airforce of Zimbabwe (AFZ) officers are pleading for their release from detention at Josiah Tungamirai Airbase after they were charged for engaging in an “illicit extra-marital affair” in the camp.

They have been imprisoned since March 11, the High Court heard.

Sharon Masuku and Nation Giya were charged with gross misconduct and have been in detention for over 90 days on charges of breaching the Defence Act, but without going to trial.

The duo, who are both married, have cited Airforce Commander Elson Moyo and the Defence ministry as respondents, seeking their immediate release or for the matter to be pursued by summons.

“We were arrested and detained on March 11 at Josiah Tungamirai Airbase on allegations of disgraceful conduct. We have been in detention in excess of 90 days now without trial in gross violation of a number of our constitutional rights,” Masuku said.

“The right to personal liberty, freedom from torture or cruel inhuman or degrading treatment, fair hearing, to be presumed innocent until proven guilty and the right to bail.”

According to their charge sheet which has been attached to the application for their immediate release, Masuku’s house maid allegedly leaked the affair to superiors, revealing how her boss would allow Giya into her matrimonial bedroom.

A search was subsequently conducted by investigating officers at Masuku’s house and Giya was found in a spare bedroom.

“From a period unknown extending to March 11 Masuku and Giya engaged in an illicit association, both being legally married and well knowing their marriages still subsist, stayed together in the matrimonial house of WS Rwambiwa (Masuku’s husband) from March 7 up to the day they were apprehended, an association which is cruel, indecent and disgraceful,” reads the charge sheet.

Masuku further submitted that their arrest and detention was also in breach of the Defence Act and said she feared for the welfare of her two children who have been in a neighbour’s custody since she was apprehended.

She said there was no guarantee that their trial for gross misconduct would kick off any soon owing to lockdown imposed restrictions.

“When the first applicant was arrested she left her two-year-old and seven-year-old children with a neighbour and it has dawned on her that she will not be released without the intervention of this court,” she added.

“Further the applicants intend to call their key witness who is in South Africa, but because the borders are closed there is no hope that this will be achieved any time soon.”

“Be Careful What You Put On Social Media,”Valerio Sibanda

Valerio Sibanda

Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Philip Valerio Sibanda has warned Zimbabweans to guard against being misled by divisive and dangerous elements who use social media to peddle lies about the country’s security sector.

“The ZDF was formed from the formerly warring forces of ZANLA and ZIPRA on one hand and the Rhodesian forces on the other.

Police Burst Smuggling Syndicate Along The Limpopo

State Media

Thirteen people have been arrested along the Limpopo River on allegations of smuggling 125 litres of fuel from South Africa.

The suspects were arrested by police on patrol and were charged of violating Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests.

“On August 5, 2020 police officers patrolling undesignated crossing points along Limpopo River, arrested 13 people,” he said.

“At the time of arrest, 125 litres of fuel destined for the black market were recovered by police from one of the suspects.”

The accused were charged for violating Covid-19 lockdown regulations whilst the owner of the fuel was additionally charged for importing hazardous substances without a licence.

Police have declared war against anyone found on the wrong side of the law and urged people to use designated entry points when leaving or coming back into the country.

Smuggling activities have been on the increase in Beitbridge, and other border towns, especially during this lockdown period, as some are bringing foodstuffs, while others are returning, but don’t want to undergo quarantining.

The South African Police Services (SAPS) recently arrested a Zimbabwean man at Beitbridge Border Post on allegations of attempting to smuggle explosives in a hearse.

The suspect was towing a trailer branded with the name of a funeral undertaker in Gauteng, when he was caught at Beitbridge.

SAPS searched both the vehicle and the trailer and found 306 blasting cartridges, as well as four detonating cords with a value of R700 800.

Zimbabwe today recorded 70 new coronavirus cases raising the total to 4 818 but had no deaths for the second day running.

Twenty people recovered bringing the total to 1 544 and the number of active cases rose slightly up at 3 170.

It still has 104 deaths but globally more than 741 700 people have died and the number of cases now stands at 20.4 million.

According to statistics about 10 percent of confirmed coronavirus cases in Zimbabwe are front-line health care workers, with the total number reaching around 480.

The affected front-line medical workers include nurses, student nurses, doctors, laboratory scientists, nurse aides, general hands and pharmacists.

The Ministry of Health said yesterday Harare and Bulawayo had reported the highest number of infections among front-line workers.

“A significant number of health workers have been infected with COVID-19 and as of July 29, 2020, more than 10 percent of the cases were among health-care workers with the majority being from the nursing profession,”the report said.

More than 100 nurses at Mpilo Central and United Bulawayo Hospitals in Zimbabwe’s second largest city had contracted the virus, forcing them into quarantine.

In Harare, more than 70 medical workers at Parirenyatwa hospital, the country’s largest referral hospital had tested positive for the virus since the beginning of July.

Touching Story Of Returnees In The Air Zim Jet That Had A Mid Air Scare

Johannesburg (CNN) — Even for 2020, with its once-in-a-generation global pandemic and the countless travel bans that have followed, this rescue mission seems a bit far-fetched.

To get around 100 South Africans and a couple of dozen Zimbabwean students out of China, it would take Air Zimbabwe’s only functioning aircraft, and diplomatic channels in embassies across the world — all orchestrated from a dining room table in Canada by one man, armed only with a cellphone.

“It is me. Me alone and my phone. I am new in Canada, so they don’t give me much phone credit here,” laughed Tertius Myburgh — a South African commercial pilot who lives in New Brunswick.

“They started contacting me, because I am in aviation, and they said: ‘How are we going to get out of here?'” explained Myburgh, who began hearing from people after South Africa banned incoming travel in March.

“Before Covid, you could just contact their civil aviation authority, send the details of your flight and — boom — a day or two later you have the authorization and off you go,” he added, on the relatively simple charter flight process before the pandemic.

But now Myburgh had to navigate the complexity of chartering flights amid international lockdowns — and with the added complication of a struggling aviation industry.
As the number of paying passengers who needed repatriation became clear, Myburgh used his Southern African links to lease a Boeing 767, plus its pilots and its crew, from Air Zimbabwe. It was the same 30-year-old plane that had been used by former President Robert Mugabe from time to time. That plane then unlocked the assistance of Zimbabwean diplomats.

Myburgh readily admits he first saw a business opportunity when he responded to the pleas for help, but he says it was impossible not to get swept up by the individuals and their stories.

“It is not just them. it is their fiancé maybe that is in South Africa, it is the husband or the wife. Or the mother and the father.”

With so many calls coming in, he needed a partner on the ground to help coordinate and corral the diverse group of South Africans and Zimbabweans.

Early on, he connected with Carmen Johannie — a South African schoolteacher based in Guangzhou.
Johannie had lived in China for three years, and was working as a teacher at the British school in Guangzhou. But after being forced into mandatory quarantine by Chinese authorities, like all other African passport holders based in Guangzhou, Johannie knew it was time to get home.

She spent months trying to get back to South Africa, before finally linking up with Myburgh.

“He sent out a message, anyone stuck in China needs to contact him. The minute I sent him a message, I instantly knew that he was a man of his word and he was a one-man show and if anybody was going to bring us home, it was going to be him,” she said.

After months of waiting to get out of China, the final journey for the group was delayed by because of last minute routing changes and a faulty engine.

“It was a team effort thing we did. And then I realized how many people are relying on us — the pressure was hectic.”

Many South Africans needed to get home from China, in part, because of a canceled repatriation flight by flag carrier South African Airways (SAA), that had originally been scheduled for mid-June.
SAA and the South Africa government mounted a high-profile evacuation of South Africans from Wuhan in mid-March. The airline has also repatriated citizens from a host of other countries.

But an additional flight, planned for June, was shelved.

“SAA was willing to transport these passengers from China to South Africa. We need to appreciate that it is under abnormal circumstances,” Tlali Tlali, the airline’s spokesperson told CNN, adding that SAA needed permission from both governments.

“We obtained permission from the South African government, but we are still waiting for approval from the other end.”

That left Myburgh, Johannie and the Air Zimbabwe 767 to do what South Africa’s national carrier could not. Myburgh credits Zimbabwean diplomats, trying to get their own citizens home too, for smoothing the way with Chinese officials.
The paperwork, though, was just one of the hurdles.

A complicated voyage
Plotting a route that would make a frequent flyer’s eyes water, the plane and crew began their journey from Zimbabwe in mid-July.
They flew from Harare to Johannesburg, and on to Bangkok, before heading to Kuala Lumpur (KL), where they picked up stranded commercial seafarers from China. The sailors’ company helped bear the costs of the charter.
From Kuala Lumpur, they headed to Guangzhou, then back to Kuala Lumpur — since they weren’t authorized to take domestic routes in China — and on to Wuhan, to pick up most of the South Africans, before eventually making it back to Johannesburg.

The Bangkok leg had to be added when the 767’s engine broke — stranding the South Africans for another two weeks. Myburgh had charged $1,000 for each repatriation; he ended up paying for their hotels and meals.
For the hundred-odd passengers, many who had become like family to each other, it was just the latest in a long series of disappointments. Some had run out of money by then, so they helped to crowdfund support.

“You are waiting for something to go wrong. So when that happened with the engine — we laughed and there was literally nothing else we could do. Our motto was: ‘It is what it is,'” said Johannie.

A new engine for the 767 made its own journey: from Harare, to Amsterdam, to Luxor, to Taipei and then on to Bangkok.

Myburgh said he never contemplated refunding the passengers and pulling the plug.

“How can I go sit now in the garden and have a whisky and have a BBQ because I made it easier for myself, but all these people are stuck there? It can’t happen that way — you have to do whatever is possible,” he said.

As the passengers and crew waited for days for the new engine, Myburgh’s credit card bills piled up. He says he ended up losing “lots and lots” of money on the repatriation, but believed that if he pulled the seemingly impossible off, future flights could help his business survive in these difficult times.

Then, in mid-July, after months of waiting, and weeks of disappointments, Johannie and the group from China were finally on their way home.

“When we took off from KL, I literally broke down. And then at the same time it was like the weight of the world was taken off your shoulders. When we landed, it was so surreal, there many tears,” said Johannie.

The South African government told CNN it is compelled to help all citizens abroad, and said it had facilitated the South Africans’ flight approvals and organized their quarantine on landing.

That’s where Johannie and her fellow passengers are now spending two weeks, in a sprawling complex east of Johannesburg. They still trade WhatsApp messages and wave to each other from their porches during the isolation. But at least they are home.

Johannie says their months-long ordeal is over thanks to just one man. A man she has never met.

“I called him my guardian angel from day one, because that is literally what he was. He is literally the only one who could help us,” she said.

32 ZIFA Councillors Set To Appear In Court For Accepting Bribes During Elections

Phillip Chiyangwa

THIRTY-TWO Zifa councillors accused of receiving bribes in the run-up to the 2018 Zifa national elections that ushered in Felton Kamambo’s administration are set to appear in court on August 25.

According to police sources, all but five of the 32 councillors were cooperating with police investigations and their statements were recorded.

Kamambo got 35 votes to Chiyangwa’s 24, while another challenger Gift Banda beat Omega Sibanda by 37 to 22 votes for the association’s vice presidency post.

Investigations later revealed that some councillors’ mobile money wallets were credited with various amounts totaling $8 110. The official exchange rate then of the local currency and US dollar was 1:1.

Police also interviewed the Zifa executive committee member accused of ‘bribing’ the councillors and he reportedly confirmed sending the money, but said it was for ‘lunch’ and other ‘incidentals’.

Those targeted received amounts ranging from $100 to $1 700, depending on how ‘influential’ that councillor was.

The five from the Midlands were not cooperating, but that’s not a big issue, they will have their day in court,” said the police source.

‘Chamisa Erred In Rejecting ED ‘Offer’, I Hope He Learnt A Lesson’ – Mliswa

Former ZANU PF Mashonaland West chairperson Temba Mliswa said MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa made a grave miscalculation when he refused President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s “offer” to appoint him the Leader of the Opposition in Parliament.

The position is not Mnangagwa’s responsibility, but the opposition MDC Alliance party’s.

The outspoken legislator for Norton said if Chamisa had taken up the offer, his party wouldn’t have been subjected to the current onslaught it is under. Said Mliswa:

Upon reflection, it’s unfortunate that Nelson Chamisa turned down the appointment of “Office of the Leader of the Opposition” which would’ve facilitated the establishment of the Office of the Opposition Leader, in Parliament in line with Commonwealth practices.

Had this appointment been accepted, many of the challenges currently being faced may have been thwarted through his anticipated role of oversight.

Any Govt programmes, corruption, reforms etc could’ve had due scrutiny. Sometimes it’s about staying in the game and galvanising oneself.

Look at the mayhem the opposition are in today; they’re divided. In retrospect had Chamisa accepted, imagine the progress we’d have made as a country by now? Chamisa is eloquent and a great debater and would have been a credit for the position.

However, they all refused. Funnily enough, though, many of those who buttressed this decision are now working with Thokozani Khupe.

So my question to the opposition is: Would it have been better to have accepted the post or is the current status quo the stronger position?

I personally feel the offer was a step in the right direction as a lot more could have been achieved and we could have avoided some of the issues we’re in today. I’m hoping lessons are being learnt.

However, in spite of Mliswa’s assertions, it is not clear whether President Emmerson Mnangagwa indeed offered the non-existent post to Chamisa or the report about the offer was a mere publicity stunt.

Further, Zimbabwe is not a member of the Commonwealth, having been suspended for one year, and then left the organisation at the turn of the Millenium.

Mliswa added that a government of national unity was unlikely but Mnangagwa should opt for an inclusive government which will allow him to pick able people from the opposition and put them include them his government.

As for Chamisa, Mliswa said he should build on the over 2 million votes he received in the 2018 elections and prepare for the 2023 polls.

South African Minister Says There Is A Serious Crisis In Zimbabwe

Lindiwe Zulu

ANC’s International Relations Committee Chairperson, Lindiwe Zulu says its time, to be frank about the unrest in Zimbabwe.

South Africa’s neighbour, is accused of violating human rights and harassing activists, including journalists who have exposed corruption.

In previous years the governing party had been reluctant to acknowledge the crisis in the country preferring the quiet diplomacy approach, but Zulu admitted there is a problem.

“In the ANC’s view, yes, there is a political crisis in Zimbabwe, and we have to be frank and honest about it.

“If we are to help the situation, then we have to be frank and honest about because we are asking the question, where is the dignity in all the Zimbabweans who are here?” said Zulu.

Zulu also paid tribute to the veteran broadcaster, Bob Mabena, who died on Monday after going into cardiac arrest.

She says she enjoyed his content.

“We Are Still On Strike, No US$ No Work,” Nurses Declare

With the coronavirus cases surging in Zimbabwe nurses have vowed to continue with their strike if their demands are not met leaving patients stranded.

Zimbabwe recorded 99 new cases yesterday bringing the total of confirmed cases to 4 748. The number of deaths remained at 104 deaths. In a bid to coerce nurses back to work the Health Services Board has struck those who are striking off the payroll but it seems this has not worked.

Wrote the nurses:
We are still on strike and we are on day 52. The majority of public hospitals are literally closed and patients are being referred to private health centres.

Some patients are actually dying because they do not afford to pay the forex charges at the private hospitals, but as nurses, we cannot call off the strike at this stage.

Government has not done anything to meet our demands which are US dollar-pegged salaries or provision of adequate personal protective equipment.

Actually the skeletal staff of nurses which is attending to emergency cases at the hospitals does not have adequate PPE.

Mwonzora Publicly Obfuscates Mnangagwa’s Crimes, Titles Everything “Contested Legitimacy”…

By A Correspondent | The MDC renegade Douglas Mwonzora has publicly obfuscated the crimes Against Humanity committed by the self boasting genocide criminal Emmerson Mnangagwa. Writing on Tuesday morning, Mwonzora played down the Zim crisis calling it that of mere contested legitimacy. His comments come at a time when it is clear that Mnangagwa has called for the killing of all people who have dissenting views since 1983 in a combined operation that has seen more than 22000 murdered, for 37 years. He said, “In resolving the Zimbabwean crisis we have to embark on serious and comprehensive social, political and economic reforms. “Key among these are electoral reforms that will resolve the perennial problem of contested legitimacy in our country.”

South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa’s two envoys were in country yesterday due to atrocities committed by Mnangagwa in events that have accelerated for 37 years to date since the 4th May 1983 and l that have seen more than 22,000 people killed. In the last two years alone more than 25 people have been killed and more than 50 women raped, as Mnangagwa on live television video threatening to shorten the lives of multitudes of people who voice dissenting views from his. On the 15th of December 2017 his office announced in his presence that the military would be used to change election results making them favourable to him and his party and over 6 people would would later be killed during the days when election results were delayed between the 31st July and the 1st of August 2018. When 5 months later 17 people were shot dead in the open, and more than 50 women raped in January 2019, Mnangagwa publicly boasted saying that none of the African leaders would criticise him because he has deployed his own public reputation agents to every country to ensure that they are submerged under his narrative of events. He made this announcement to the people of Mwenezi in February 2019whom he also threatened that he would shorten the lives of their multitudes, in what he termed mazuva enyu achaunyana. After All, Ramaphosa’s Zimbabwe Envoys Are Compromised, They Should Be Withdrawn – South African Opposition Parties

Welcome to Mnangagwa’s tea party.

Statement by the Democratic Alliance.

We are calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to withdraw his appointment of Baleka Mbete and Sydney Mufamadi as Special envoys to Zimbabwe because of their political bias towards the ZANU-PF-led regime in Zimbabwe.
The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to withdraw his appointment of Baleka Mbete and Sydney Mufamadi as Special envoys to Zimbabwe because of their political bias towards the ZANU-PF-led regime in Zimbabwe.

Failure to withdraw these two individuals will render the mission a farce and an attempt by President Ramaphosa to cover up the human rights abuses that Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has been committing against defenseless Zimbabweans.

If the President refuses to withdraw these ‘envoys’, we call on the Zimbabwean people to reject this poor attempt to whitewash their abuse and suffering at the hands of Mnangagwa’s military government.

While attending ZANU-PF’s extraordinary congress in December 2017, Mbete, who was representing the ANC, heaped praise on ZANU-PF for the military coup that removed Mugabe, adding that: “You achieved a good transition peacefully. I find no bitterness or hatred about your predecessor Mugabe. That is political maturity. As ANC we are here to say we are proud to be associated with ZANU-PF and we wish you good luck comrades”.

Her counterpart, Sydney Mufamadi, refused to meet with opposition leaders in Zimbabwe in 2007 when he was sent by then-president Thabo Mbeki in response to the country’s escalating political crisis, choosing instead to focus his attention on the then-president Robert Mugabe.

In fact, both Mbeki and Mufamadi insisted that the opposition leaders recognise Mugabe as the legitimate leader of Zimbabwe before political talks could begin.

Under this cloud of political bias, Ramaphosa’s ‘envoys’ cannot claim to be acting on behalf of the South African government. They are ANC functionaries who have been sent by Ramaphosa to express solidarity with Mnangagwa’s murderous government.

Mnangagwa’s government has used the cover of Covid-19 to unleash an unprecedented attack on individual freedoms by arresting journalists like Hopewell Chin’ono, whose only crime was exposing corruption, and using force to stop citizens from exercising their right to protest.

What Zimbabweans do not need at the moment is Ramaphosa using the ANC’s solidarity with ZANU-PF to engineer an international cover-up of Zimbabwe’s escalating political and economic crisis. ‘Quiet diplomacy’ should never be allowed to turn into ‘Cover-up Diplomacy’

Democratic Alliance of S.A. Condemns Mnangagwa’s Tea Party Meeting, Tells Ramaphosa To Go Himself

Welcome to Mnangagwa’s tea party.

The opposition Democratic Alliance in South Africa has slammed the meeting between South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa’s envoys and the Zimbabwean government and called it a failed tea summit.

Writing on their website, the DA said:

The decision by the Zimbabwean government to deny President Cyril Ramphosa’s envoys an opportunity to meet with opposition leaders was not only disrespectful to the office of the African Union Chairperson, which Ramaphosa currently holds, but seems to confirm that the voices of the opposition and civil society are being muzzled in Zimbabwe.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) now calls on President Ramaphosa, in his capacity as AU Chairperson, to show leadership and go to Harare and meet with all the relevant stakeholders and get a balanced picture of the political crisis unfolding in the country.

Media reports indicate that Sydney Mufamadi, Baleka Mbethe, and Ngoako Ramathlodi were hosted to a ‘tea briefing’ by Zimbabwe’s President, Emmerson Mnangagwa. Mnangagwa then told the envoys that ‘there was no crisis in Zimbabwe’ and hence no need to meet with the opposition or civil society.

The envoys had made plans to meet with the opposition and had to cancel them at the last minute because of Mnangagwa’s strong-arming tactics. This is unacceptable.

Mr Mnangagwa’s government has unleashed a reign of terror on defenceless citizens, arresting journalists and activists on trumped-up charges. For him to claim that there is no crisis in Zimbabwe and ask that the envoys sent by the AU Chairperson turn around and go back without meeting the opposition, is a poor attempt at covering up the actions of his murderous regime.

For far too long, successive ANC governments have stood by as ZANU-PF has trampled civil liberties with impunity and disregard for the rule of law. The ANC has played an enabling role in the Zimbabwe crisis by glossing over state brutality in the country and its mismanagement of the economy.

President Cyril Ramaphosa faces the first real test in his Chairmanship of the AU. He will have to make a choice on whether to stand with the people of Zimbabwe against the tyranny of ZANU-PF or continue with the failed policy of ‘quiet diplomacy’.

DA has previously urged President Ramaphosa to withdraw the envoys he appointed to Zimbabwe and cited the fact that Baleka Mbete one of the envoys praised the Robert Mugabe government in 2007 when the political situation in Zimbabwe was chaotic which makes her biased towards Zanu PF. DA also said Sydney Mufamadi the other envoy also refused to meet opposition parties when he was on a similar mission in 2007 and also said he could not meet opposition parties yesterday when he came to the “failed tea summit”

Mnangagwa Promises To Pay Soldiers Handsomely For Doing Their Work Very Well.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa

President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday promised to improve the remuneration, welfare and conditions of service for members of the country’s defence forces.

In his virtual address to mark 40th Anniversary of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF), President Mnangagwa commended the security forces for performing their duties with excellence and unparalleled dedication.

“I am aware of the sacrificial nature and service ethos of the Defence Forces, however, my administration remains determined to improve the salaries and conditions of service for our Forces. Housing, transport and medical facilities among other requirements are being improved in recognition of the role and sacrifices made by our Defence Forces in the conduct of their duties.

“Mobility, requisite training equipment and Research and Development needs will be equally funded to ensure the modernisation and improvement of our national defence capabilities,” he said adding Government had the same intentions for veterans of the liberation struggle.

“With regard to the War Veterans Affairs, my Government has resuscitated the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Bill which has now gone past the Second Reading Stage in Parliament. The passing of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Bill into Law will repeal the War Veterans Act and the Ex -Political Prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees Act and take on board the previously excluded categories of the Veterans.

“I am confident that upon its enactment, most of the welfare issues of Veterans of the Liberation Struggle will be resolved,” he said.

The President accused the opposition of conniving with foreigners to foment violent protests.

“Thank you, once again for remaining calm and peaceful in the wake of some misguided calls for violent protests and demonstrations by the opposition elements with support from foreign and civil society supporters and backers. You have shown your patriotism and love for peace and tranquillity. “To the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, as a nation we take pride in you and we thank you for continuously defending our sovereignty and territorial integrity from all contemporary threats,” he said.

President Mnangagwa applauded the ZDF for maintaining peace and security in the country.

“In executing its constitutional mandate, the ZDF has since its formation acquitted itself with distinction and high professionalism and for this they deserve a big compliment. Zimbabwe has continued to enjoy peace largely attributable to the ZDF`s vigilance, loyalty, commitment and dedication to their constitutional obligation of defending the country and its people.

“The resultant peace and tranquillity has provided a great stimulus for socio-economic development over the years. Whilst maintaining peace in the country, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces continue to participate in regional and international peace keeping missions under the auspices of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), African Union (AU) and the United Nations,” he said.

President Mnangagwa said the ongoing fight against Covid-19 requires military –like discipline by all citizens especially with regards to observing national lockdown regulations meant to slow the spread of the virus.

“Our battle with Covid-19 pandemic requires discipline, bravery and unity which are embodied in the personalities we are celebrating today. We must be united and fight this invisible enemy together. It is our collective responsibility to protect our nation, our families and our beloved ones.

“As responsible citizens, let us all cooperate with our security services, assisted by the ZDF as they enforce our national laws. We commend the ZDF for continuing to be a people’s army, a reputation it has built over the years,” he said.

Sadly, Covid-19s has claimed some members of the ZDF such as Air Chief Marshal (Rtd) Perrance Shiri, who was a long time Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe and Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement and Page 5 of 11 the ZDF Director of Public Relations, Colonel Overson Mugwisi, among others, President Mnangagwa said.

To date, Zimbabwe has recorded 4 748 confirmed cases including 104 deaths.

Zanu PF Official Fired For Denouncing Mnangagwa’s “Stupid Policies”

Zanu PF

In July this year, the government agreed to a US$3,5 billion infrastructure compensation deal with white former commercial farmers who lost their farms during the chaotic land reform programme which started in 2000.-NewsDay

“Just Like Ian Smith, Emmerson Mnangagwa Is Using Detention To Silence Opponents”

Emmerson Mnangagwa

Farai Dziva|Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration has inherited a colonial legacy in terms of silencing political opponents.

According to the MDC Alliance, just like Ian Douglas Smith, Mnangagwa is using detention as a tool to silence political foes.

See statement below:

Kurauone was denied bail at Masvingo Magistrates Courts and his bail hearing appeal is set for tomorrow at Masvingo High Court.

Prince Dube To Leave Bosso?

Prince Dube

HIGHLANDERS’ coach Mark Harrison seems to have begrudgingly accepted the departure of his marksman Prince Dube, who is set to reunite with former teammate Bruce Kangwa at ambitious Tanzanian side Azam.

Speaking from his base in the United Kingdom, Harrison told Chronicle Sport that it was always inevitable the player would eventually be sold.
Dube’s departure from Bosso was expedited on Friday.

Intermediary Gibson Mahachi, who represents Dube, drove to Bulawayo on Friday and held meetings, first with Prince and his uncle Mkhokheli Dube and then later Highlanders where an agreement was reached with only a few loose ends left to be ironed out.

It is believed Bosso want a clause inserted that will see the club getting a certain percentage in the event that Azam sell the player to another club.

“Look it’s a situation that was always waiting to happen. It was inevitable he would be sold eventually. It’s great for Prince and I wish him all the very best in his new endeavour.

On the flip side for the club, it’s also an excellent move as the income generated will help support the club during these uncertain times and for me as a coach it’s something as a professional you have to deal with, it happens all the time in football,” said Harrison.

Mwonzora ‘Trashes POLAD’, Calls For Legitimate Dialogue Forum

By Jane Mlambo| MDC-T Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora has somewhat discredited the Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) calling for what he termed legitimate forum for dialogue to discuss the reform plan which he said is critical in resolving the Zimbabwe crisis.

Posting on his Facebook page, Mwonzora said the envisaged electoral reforms should see the enfranchisement of the diaspora community while discouraging the ruling party from tempering with the constitution.

“The key to resolving the Zimbabwean crisis lies in us embarking on a set of comprehensive social, political and economic reforms. Key among these are electoral reforms which will forestall the problem of contested legitimacy in Zimbabwe. These electoral reforms will see the enfranchisement of millions of Zimbabweans living in the diaspora. But this first requires the establishment of a legitimate forum for dialogue over the reforms. It then will call for the establishment of a governance structure to initiate and implement these reforms. Our constitution provides a great starting point for reform. This means the government must forth stop its attempts to temper with the constitution as adopted by the Zimbabwean people in the historic referendum of 2013. The fundamental rights and freedoms of the Zimbabwean people must be observed and respected,” said Mwonzora.

Mwonzora’s call for what he says is a legitimate dialogue forum flies in the face of President Emmerson Mnangagwa who continues to urge his political opponents to join POLAD while insisting that it is the only platform where dialogue should happen.

Mwonzora’s party leader Thokozani Khupe is part of the POLAD which is also made up of fringe parties including National Constitutional Assembly, CODE, PDP led by Lucia Matibenga and 14 other parties.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa snubbed POLAD calling it a choir meant to legitimize Mnangagwa.

Emmerson Mnangagwa “Scuttles” Talks With Opposition

Mr Mnangagwa

Diseases From Cockroaches:Health Alert

Health

Cockroaches can spread a range of diseases.

However, unlike mosquitoes , they are not direct vectors of diseases through mechanical transfer and acting as a reservoir.

Transmission occurs indirectly, from consumption or contact with items which have been contaminated by cockroaches, rather than through bites.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) “Cockroaches are not usually the most important cause of a disease, but like houseflies, they play a supplementary role in the spread of some diseases”…

Cockroaches are proven or suspected carriers of the organisms that cause the following infections:

Salmonellosis
Typhoid Fever
Cholera
Gastroenteritis
Dysentery
Leprosy
Plague
Campylobacteriosis
Listeriosis
Giardia
Cockroaches can also trigger asthma and other allergies as well as spread
E.coli , staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus

We Are Not Your Enemies, MDC Alliance Tells Zimbabwe Defence Forces

Soldiers

Zanu PF Youth Leader Denounces Mnangagwa’s “Stupid Policies”

In July this year, the government agreed to a US$3,5 billion infrastructure compensation deal with white former commercial farmers who lost their farms during the chaotic land reform programme which started in 2000.-NewsDay

Coronavirus : Prevention Tips That Will Save Your Life

Coronavirus

Stay aware of the latest information on the COVID-19 outbreak, available on the WHO website and through your national and local public health authority. Many countries around the world have seen cases of COVID-19 and several have seen outbreaks.

The situation is unpredictable so check regularly for the latest news.

You can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading COVID-19 by taking some simple precautions:

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Why?Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

Keep up to date on the latest COVID-19 hotspots (cities or local areas where COVID-19 is spreading widely). If possible, avoid traveling to places – especially if you are an older person or have diabetes, heart or lung disease.

Why? You have a higher chance of catching COVID-19 in one of these areas.

Jailed MDC Alliance Youth Organizer In Critical Condition

Godfrey Kurauone

11-08-2020

Reports from Masvingo Remand Prison indicate that jailed MDC Alliance Youth Organizer Clr Godfrey Kurauone is in a very unstable health condition.

Our Organizer is being denied access to proper medication and healthy food in contravention of the Prisons Act.

Clr Kurauone was arrested by the police when he went to report as per his bail conditions.

He is part of the long list of individuals whom the police say are wanted for ‘interviews’ in connection with 31 July protests against looting and corruption.

Kurauone was denied bail at Masvingo Magistrates Courts and his bail hearing appeal is set for tomorrow at Masvingo High Court.

Police Says Zimbabweans’ Reckless Behavior Concerning

POLICE have raised concern over the reckless behaviour of some members of the public who continue to violate the Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

As at yesterday, 133 407 people had been arrested countywide for violating Covid-19 lockdown regulations.

National police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said police were worried about the level of recklessness displayed by Zimbabweans in the face of the pandemic, which has killed more than 100 people in the country.

He lamented the low risk perception among Zimbabweans, especially youths, on contracting the virus, and said it was exhibited through liquor offences, such as public drinking and attending house parties among other vices.

“The Covid-19 pandemic presents to us a situation where we are all required to act responsibly. The manner in which most people are behaving in public spaces is concerning. People need a police officer to tell them to wear a mask. At checkpoints many people in a bus are seen not wearing a mask, yet it is an enclosed space. It all comes back to us as individuals. People want to ensure they are not arrested but are not thinking of ensuring their safety,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

“As police, we call for a change of attitude and behaviour from the citizens. Officers are there to enforce the law and to protect the public. Do not wear a mask only because there is a police officer in sight. Wear it for your safety and that of the next person.”

Asst Comm Nyathi said members of the public fail to practice social distancing in public spaces.

He said there was so much unnecessary movement with a number of people having been apprehended while roaming around aimlessly.

He said house parties continued to be a norm while liquor offences were still a headache in places such as Bulawayo and Harare.

“People are just not practising social distancing. It is worrying. You walk into a supermarket, people do not want to leave spaces in between each other when queuing. Everywhere people want to be policed, monitored and told what to do. It is not right. This is not a time to be doing something right only in front of the police. We are in a new world order and in order for us to survive and also to protect the lives of our fragile loved ones at home, the public is urged to comply with Covid-19 safety regulations,” he said.

He called on bank and supermarket management countrywide to ensure that lockdown regulations were followed in their premises, especially social distancing.

Asst Comm Nyathi said smuggling at the country’s borders continued despite arrests and called for the public residing near borders to report illicit activities in their areas.

Harare tops the list of lockdown arrests with 28 407 people having been arrested so far, followed by Manicaland at 24 882.

Touching Image Of Chin’ono And Ngarivhume In Leg Irons Inside Chikurubi

A picture of incarcerated duo of Jacob Ngarivhume and journalist Hopewell Chin’ono in leg irons inside Chikurubi maximum prison is making rounds on social media.

The two were denied bail both at the Magistrates and High Court in what has been roundly condemned by the region and international community.

View picture below….

Chin’ono And Ngarivhume Are Heroes: Chamisa

Opposition MDC Alliance President Nelson Chamisa has vowed to fight for the Zimbabwean dream while hailing past and present heroes for laying the foundation of the country.

Posting on Twitter, Chamisa said incarcerated duo of Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume were heroes while promising everyone a new Zimbabwe.

“In commemoration of our heroes past & present, whose courage is the foundation of this beautiful nation, thank you. Thank you for reminding us that the Zimbabwean dream is worth fighting for. To Hope, Jacob & all those facing persecution, you are heroes.A new Zimbabwe is close,” said Chamisa

FULL THREAD: Mliswa Says Chamisa Erred In Rejecting Govt Position

1/ Upon reflection, it’s unfortunate @nelsonchamisa turned down the appointment of “Office of the Leader of the Opposition” which would’ve facilitated the establishment of the Office of the Opposition Leader, in Parliament in line with Commonwealth practices.

2/Had this appointment been accepted, many of the challenges currently being faced may’ve been thwarted through his anticipated role of oversight. Any Govt programmes, corruption, reforms etc could’ve had due scrutiny. Sometimes it’s about staying in the game& galvanising oneself

3/ Look at the mayhem the opposition are in today; they’re divided. In retrospect had @nelsonchamisa accepted, imagine the progress we’d have made as a country by now @nelsonchamisa is eloquent & a great debater & would’ve been a credit for the position

4/ However they all refused. Funnily enough though, many of those who buttressed this decision are now working with @DrThoko_Khupe

5/ So my question to the opposition is: Would it have been better to have accepted the post or is the current status quo the stronger position?

6/ I personally feel the offer was a step in the right direction as a lot more could’ve been achieved & we could’ve avoided some of the issues we’re in today. I’m hoping lessons are being learnt

7/A GNU is unlikely. @edmnangagwa has the prerogative to establish an Inclusive Govt, it’s something I’d encourage him to do. A GNU & an Inclusive Govt are 2 different options. An Inclusive Govt is about identifying people with capacity across the political divide to form TeamZim

8/ With the numbers @nelsonchamisa had during the elections he should be working steadily towards 2023; that should be his focus.

Electoral Reforms Key In Resolving Contested Legitimacy: Mwonzora

MDC-T Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora insists the current crisis in Zimbabwe is best solved by instituting electoral reforms which he said have the power to end contested legitimacy issues that have plagued Zimbabwean politics for over a decade now.

Posting on Twitter this morning, Mwonzora said the Zimbabwean crisis is best solved by embarking on serious and comprehensive social, political and economic reforms.

“In resolving the Zimbabwean crisis we have to embark on serious and comprehensive social, political and economic reforms. Key among these are electoral reforms that will resolve the perennial problem of contested legitimacy in our country,” said Mwonzora.

Mwonzora’s position differs sharply with the current reading of events by the bigger MDC Alliance who insists human rights abuses are the core of the problems bedeviling the country.

This has resulted a globally trending hashtag #ZimbabweanLivesMatter where citizens have taken it upon themselves to alert the rest of the world on the prevailing situation in Zimbabwe.

Police Officers Who Delight In Brutality Should Be Punished: Madhuku

By Jane Mlambo| Opposition National Constitutional Assembly leader Professor Lovemore Madhuku has condemned the assault of his party spokesperson Madock Chivasa by police in Masvingo saying police officers who delight in brutality should be punished and removed from office.

Madhuku was responding to Tajamuka leader Promise Mkhwananzi who announced that Chivasa had been brutally assaulted by police who questioned why he was not running away when everyone else was.

“Professor Madhuku led NCA Spokesperson Madock Chivasa brutally assaulted by police yesterday in Masvingo. Crime: Why are you not running away when everyone else is running away? Lesson: #Zimbabweanlivesmatter,” said Mkwananzi to which Madhuku responded saying;

“It is unacceptable. I condemn it. We condemn it. It must be condemned by all. We all must contribute towards a Zimbabwe where police officers who delight in brutality are punished and removed from office.”

Mnangagwa Says Zim Is Facing Hostile Anti-Zimbabwe Propaganda On Social Media

In his speech marking the Defence Forces Day, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the country was facing a hostile anti-Zimbabwe propaganda which he said was being mounted on social media.

This followed the trending #ZimbabweanLivesMatter which got international buy in with influential politicians in the region and other areas condemning the wanton abuse of human rights in the country.

“The commemorations which we are holding this year under the theme, ‘ZDF: Celebrating 40 Years of Excellent Service to the People,’ are taking place under yet another wave of aggression manifesting through illegal sanctions, hostile anti- Zimbabwe propaganda, mounted on social media platforms, and other forms of asymmetrical warfare meant to break the unity within our forces,” said Mnangagwa.

ANC Stalwart Admits Zim Is In A Political Crisis

MDC Cry Foul As Ramaphosa’s Envoys Mission Begins And Ends At State House

The opposition MDC Alliance is crying foul after South African envoys send by President Cyril Ramaphosa on a fact finding mission snubbed them despite an earlier communication to meet upon arrival in Zimbabwe.

The MDC Alliance Spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere said they were waiting from 10am in the morning and were later told that the team was now heading back to South Africa to appraise Ramaphosa of the outcome of their meeting with President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Mahere blamed Zanu PF for the snub.

“We can only assume that the failure to meet the MDC Alliance delegation was as a result of demands made by the Zanu PF delegation,” she said.

Mocking the opposition, Information Secretary Nick Mangwana said cited the example of Home Affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe who was once send as a special envoy by Mnangagwa to Guinea saying envoys are only supposed to meet the head of state.

“Earlier today I was talking to some former diplomats about Special Envoys. We were recalling HE President sending Special Envoys in the region including when he sent Hon Kazembe Kazembe to Conakry. All these Special Envoys met the Head of State briefed him/her and went back,” said Mangwana.

Meanwhile, a rival MDC faction, MDC-T led by Dr Thokozani Khupe said it had no problems with being snubbed by Baleka Mbete and Sydney Mufamadi.

“As MDC-T we welcome this development and remain positive that the two leaders in President Ramaphosa and President Mnangagwa will get to the bottom of the issues bedevilling our beautiful nation and Zimbabwe will once again experience peace, unity love and harmony,” said the party Spokesperson Khalipani Phugeni.

Mnangagwa’s Belarus Friend In Deep Trouble As Citizens Flood Streets Demanding He Steps Down

ABC News

Mnangagwa and his Belarus counterpart

There were intense clashes in Belarus’ capital Minsk on Monday night as security forces sought to violently disperse thousands of protesters who gathered for the second day in a row to demand that the country’s authoritarian leader, Alexander Lukashenko, step down following a contested election.

Large crowds of protesters filled several parts of central Minsk, as police and heavily armed interior ministry troops indiscriminately attacked them, throwing stun grenades and reportedly firing rubber bullets. Authorities said at least one protester was killed.

The protests appeared to be swelling and demonstrators became increasingly emboldened, with police struggling to disperse them. On some streets, video appeared to show demonstrators using garbage dumpsters to build barricades and firing fireworks at the police officers.

Clashes were also reported in a number of other cities across Belarus, where protests broke out. Opposition social messenger channels urged people to gather on the streets and stand their ground against the police.

A nationwide strike has also been called for Tuesday.

The protests began Sunday night after official results from a presidential election gave Lukashenko 80% of the votes and his main opponent, Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, just 10%, amid suspicions of widespread vote rigging.

Tikhanovskaya, 37, a former teacher and stay-at-home mother, has become the head of the swelling protest movement and in the weeks before the election attracted the largest political demonstrations in Belarus since the fall of the Soviet Union. Lukashenko, 65, often known as “Europe’s last dictator,” has been in power for 26 years. The current protests are seen by many as an unprecedented challenges to his rule.

Tikhanovskaya accused Lukashenko of massive falsification in the election and demanded he hand over power peacefully to her so that new elections can be held.

Lukashenko has dismissed Tikhanovskaya’s demand he step down and on Monday even justified the crackdown, deriding the protesters as “sheep” controlled by European countries.

“I warned there won’t be a Maidan, no matter who wanted it,” Lukashenko said earlier on Monday, according to Belarus’ state news agency, referring to Ukraine’s popular revolution in 2014 that toppled an autocratic president.

“And so it has to be quietened down, to be calmed down. The response will be adequate. We will not allow them to blow up the country.”

Protesters returned Monday evening, after organizers advised them to buy helmets and goggles in anticipation of more police violence. Initially, small crowds in different groups moved towards the city center, where they were quickly attacked by police. But as the night wore on, the crowds grew in size, with thousands of people blocking roads and police officers seeming to struggle to contain them. Videos show that hundreds of cars stopped and honking in support. Meanwhile, explosions from stun grenades and fire works were heard consistently throughout the night.

Belarusian Interior Ministry said that one demonstrator was killed after an “improvised explosive device” went off in his hand while riot police were dismantling a barricade. It was not possible to verify the police’s version of events.

The internet in Belarus has been partly shut down for two days, with many messenger apps not working properly. Belarus’ government also refused to give journalists from most foreign news organizations permission to enter the country.

European countries on Monday expressed concern about the election and the crackdown on demonstrators. The president of the European Union, Charles Michel, tweeted for the government to respect “basic human rights” and the right to assemble.

Lukashenko recently sought to improve relations with Western countries as a counterweight to a more overbearing Russia, with which Belarus is already significantly integrated. The U.S. last year restored diplomatic relations with Belarus after a decade-long pause, caused by another crackdown by Lukashenko after an election in 2010.

Pompeo did not announce any U.S. action — amid calls from some in the European Union for sanctions on Belarus — nor did he offer suggestions for a path forward, such as calling for Lukashenko to hold new elections.

China, and Belarus’ key ally, Russia, quickly recognized Lukashenko’s re-election. Both President Vladimir Putin and China’s leader, Xi Jinping, congratulated the Belarus president.

Highlanders Gets US$50 000 On Prince Dube

Prince Dube

WARRIORS and Highlanders striker Prince Dube (pictured right) could become the latest Zimbabwe football international to make a breakthrough move to France after attracting the attention of two unnamed clubs in the Western European country.

The 23-year-old free-scoring striker was set for a trial stint in France, but the trip was cancelled due to Covid-19-induced travel restrictions.

His representatives, however, remain optimistic that he will get another chance to finally secure a big move, which could see him becoming the third Zimbabwean plying his trade in France, joining Marshal Munetsi and Tino Kadewere.

In the interim, Dube — whose contract at Highlanders is set to expire in December — will join Tanzanian top-flight side Azam in a short-term deal. One of the terms of the contract is that Azam, which is also home to Zimbabwean players Bruce Kangwa and Never Tigere, will have to allow him to fly to Europe for the trial stint in France.

The player’s manager Gibson Mahachi was in Bulawayo on Saturday where he met with Bosso and Azam representatives to finalise the negotiations.

“I can confirm that Azam were interested in the services of Prince Dube and they have reached an agreement with Highlanders. The interest from Azam came at a time I was working on securing him a move to go to Europe and we are still working on that. We have had inquiries from France and had it not been for this Covid-19 thing, Prince would have gone there for trials. There are two clubs interested in him there, they wanted him and still want him, but Prince cannot travel and time is running out,” Mahachi told Standardsport in an interview yesterday.

He added: “This is why one of the conditions for his move to Tanzania is that we will be able to still continue with our French deal if the borders are opened so that if the French club says come next week, we would not have problems. These are the mechanisms and some of the things that we had to make sure Azam understand and agree to and obviously you need to have a buy-out clause to allow us to still continue trying to work on a better deal for Prince. We finally agreed on everything [with Azam] today [yesterday].”

Bosso chairman Kenneth Mhlope on Friday confirmed that the Bulawayo giants were in discussions regarding the departure of Dube.

Bosso reportedly received a US$50 000 transfer fee for the player and are keen to secure a share of earnings from his future transfer should he finally secure his move to Europe.

“The deal will benefit both the club and the player in the immediate and in the long run. It was always the desire of both parties to secure a route into European leagues for the young striker, hence the careful consideration given to the arrangement currently in process,” Mhlope said.

“The negotiations are in line with one of the objectives of the club’s business side — moving players to competitive leagues. Initially, the club and Prince had envisaged the player’s direct move to European leagues, but due to the outbreak of coronavirus, a pandemic that brought the world to a standstill, both parties had to consider other avenues.

“Dube has pending trial invitations in Europe, which have however, been elongated because of global movement restrictions due to coronavirus. Cognisant of the fact that these trials’ immediate success is not guaranteed, the club and the player have agreed to listen to other offers.”

The details of Dube’s imminent move to France come as a relief to local fans who felt his talent deserves a better stage than the Tanzanian top-flight league.

“Mgadafi”, as Dube is affectionately known by the Highlanders fans, has been working hard to revive his career after enduring a frustrating period in South Africa where he failed to make an impact at SuperSport United following his move in July 2017.

After being released by SuperSport United, Dube made a return to his boyhood club Highlanders at the start of last season where his goal-scoring form led the Bulawayo giants to the Chibuku Super Cup title.

The talented Zimbabwe international striker also helped the locally-based Warriors qualify for the African Nations Championships.

His form earned him the Castle Lager Soccer Star of the Year second runner-up award and a call-up to the Warriors squad for the 2021 Afcon qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia.

Khupe And Chamisa Responses To Envoy Snub Clear Two Worlds Apart

Khupe and Chamisa

Political commentators have been left puzzled by how the two MDC political formations reacted to the decision by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa’s envoy not to meet their representatives after keeping them waiting the whole day on Monday.

The MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe welcomed the decision and expressed confidence that President Ramaphosa and President Emmerson Mnangagwa are well able to deal with Zimbabwe’s crisis without engaging the opposition.

However, the MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa was left furious by the snub and warned Ramaphosa that the Mnangagwa administration is incapable of resolving these challenges because it lacks legitimacy.

Some political observers believe that Khupe’s measured response to the snub shows that she is politically mature while others have argued that it proves that MDC-T has become ZANU PF’s adopted child.

Part of the statement issued by MDC-T Acting Secretary for Information and Publicity Khaliphani Phugeni after the snub says:

… As MDC-T we welcome this development and remain positive that the two leaders in President Ramaphosa and President Mnangagwa will get to the bottom of the issues bedevilling our beautiful nation and Zimbabwe will once again experience peace, unity love and harmony.

In contrast, a statement released by MDC Alliance National Spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere says in part:

We can only assume that the failure to meet the MDC Alliance delegation was as a result of demands made by the Zanu PF delegation.

We reiterate that Zimbabwe is in a state of crisis that has been characterized by a de facto state of emergency, a crackdown on citizens, abductions, arbitrary arrests of government critics and the political persecution of journalists.

The Government in Harare is incapable of resolving these challenges because it lacks legitimacy.

South Africa’s Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Phakhama Mbete, had earlier requested Khupe and Chamisa to meet the envoy but later informed them that the meetings will not take place without giving reasons.

Mdc Alliance Says It Recorded 146 Cases Of Human Rights Violations In Recent Weeks

Gladys Hlatshwayo with MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.

The opposition MDC Alliance said it has recorded more than 146 cases of victimisation of citizens, with 11 of the cases being property destruction.

In a statement, the party’s Secretary for Social Welfare Gladys Hlatswayo said there have been 38 cases of abduction and torture and the heinous crimes were all committed by armed men moving around in unmarked vehicles. She said:

We have recorded over 146 cases of victimisation. The majority are targeted victimization, displacements and arrests totalling a combined 97 cases, with property destructions recording a total number of eleven cases (11 cases).

38 cases of abduction and torture and all are committed by armed men in unmarked vehicles. Victims suffered severe and in some cases life-threatening injuries.

The injuries include broken ribs and limbs, internal bleeding, electrocution, and being injected unknown substances.

In Bulawayo late last week on Friday, a 23-year-old woman was abducted, sexually assaulted and badly beaten by four men looking for her political activist uncle Josphat ‘Mzaca’ Ngulube.

Her case is only one of several such cases which have been widely reported by private media in the past few days.

Mnangagwa To Preside Over Virtual Defence Forces Day Commemoration

Emmerson Mnangagwa

PRESIDENT Mnangagwa, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, will today lead the nation in celebrating the Defence Forces Day, a day set aside to pay tribute to the country’s security forces.

The celebrations of the Defence Forces come a day after the country celebrated the National Heroes Day, in a virtual ceremony in response to the Covid-19 lockdown limiting public gatherings.

In his address yesterday, the President saluted the Defence Forces for keeping and maintaining peace.

“Peace, unity, harmony and love are prerequisites for the achievement of our country’s prosperity and sustainable socio-economic development.

“We are forever grateful to our security service sector, which continues to protect our independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.

Usually, thousands throng the National Sports Stadium on this day, but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, this year celebrations will be different after authorities took preventive measures to curb the spread of the pandemic that has killed more than 100 people in Zimbabwe.

In an interview to mark the day, Commander Defence Forces General Philip Valerio Sibanda said the commemorations gave the nation an opportunity to reflect on the historical formation of the ZDF.

“(The day) is important because the commemorations give the nation an opportunity to reflect on the historical formation of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces in 1980.

Byo Dentist Running His Business In The Streets

Chronicle

Doctor’s equipment

HE is probably well known for his loud hailer and marketing phrase “Umuthi wamazinyo la! Mushonga wemazino pano” in the streets of Bulawayo, but what many do not know is that Mr Rabson Zikhali is a former Witswatersrand University medical student who had to drop out due to personal reasons.

His herbal-based toothache remedy concoction is probably the most used in the city with some claiming it is more effective than prescribed meds from dentists and cheaper too.

Mr Zikhali originally from Nkayi said he started his herbal concoction business in 2013 and has never looked back as oral problems are as common as headaches in Bulawayo.

According to Zikhali, the small packet of toothache concoction which costs USD$1 or equivalent has helped him build a home for his family and provide for all their needs.

“I acquired my knowledge in South Africa, came back to operate in my home country and registered a company by the name New Era Chemicals in 2013. This herbal company deals mainly with solving almost all dental and other health problems using crude natural remedies, both indigenous and exotic,” says the father of four who lives in Lobengula suburb.

“I tried studying medicine in 2008 at Wits, but ended up resorting to herbs for reasons which I cannot disclose in public. I have since decided to make a living by selling herbs and it is as easy as going around saying, ‘Umuthi wamazinyo la! Teeth remedy here, Mushonga wemazino pano!’.”

Mr Zikhali says he normally targeted crowds and it was easy for him to find customers where there were gatherings.

“So far I have managed to pay school fees, build a beautiful home for my family in the rural areas and I’m working towards acquiring land to plant my herbs,” he adds.

“My word of encouragement concerning oral health is let us all refrain from eating or drinking very hot nor very cold food and drinks to avoid expansion and contraction of teeth which is the major cause of dental problems.”

He adds that his gift in the knowledge of herbs is not spiritual as he gathered that from his days when he wanted to be a doctor.

“I realised that it was possible to treat many of the diseases without using the chemicals found in most of our medicines that is why I decided to venture into the business and help people using natural resources. It pained to see people remove teeth all the time when I knew there was a remedy to stop toothaches without them going through the pains of tooth extraction,” he says.

Mr Zikhali, like every Zimbabwean, has not been spared from the effects of Covid-19 lockdown restrictions as he can no longer reach his clients as before.

He says before lockdown, he would sell about 100 packets of the concoction daily but since March, the number had reduced to only 20 packets.

“I have lost out due to the lockdown but I am grateful because as a mobile herbalist I can reach out to some of my clients who still come into town. Many seek for my services via WhatsApp and I try and meet up so that I deliver the needed remedy,” said Mr Zikhali.

“Business may be slow these days but I still manage to help people deal with toothaches and that is a major success for me. I even have an office in town where people can reach me but I am ever available for consultations as I also have herbs to help people with heart conditions and other non-communicable diseases.”

Zanu PF Is Now A Guerrilla Army – Tsitsi Dangarembga

AFP

Tsitsi Dangarembga

IT WAS a week that for Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga started with elation and ended in despair.

It began with the news that her latest novel had been long-listed for one of the world’s top literary awards — a dazzling peak in a career that, like her country, spans nearly four decades.

And it ended in despondency after she was arrested, bundled into a police cell and charged with inciting public violence after taking part in a two-women silent protest.

On the morning of July 31, the 61-year-old left home telling her husband she would be back shortly from staging a snap protest along a nearby road.

She was arrested with her friend as they stood on a street corner bearing placards demanding reform of Zimbabwe’s institutions and freedom for critics.

“I was very sad because the message on my poster was very peaceful. I didn’t think of it as confrontation at all, although we had been told that the demonstration was illegal,” Dangarembga said after she was released.

“I’m not a human rights defender, I’m not a politician and I don’t ever intend to be. The little activism I do through narrative is not confrontational, and I call myself a conscientious citizen,” she said in a phone interview with AFP.

The listing for the revered Booker Prize for her work “This Mournable Body” marks a new high point in a decades-long career in novels, plays and films.

“That arrest was like the other side, the letdown — the disappointment of 40 years of being in Zimbabwe,” she said.
Dangarembga started studying medicine at the University of Cambridge but did not finish as her parents moved back to Zimbabwe at independence.

She switched courses to study psychology at the University of Zimbabwe, then went to study film in Germany.

Dangarembga stepped into the international limelight in 1988 with her debut novel “Nervous Conditions”, a coming-of-age story about a girl’s battle to escape poverty and get an education in the then Rhodesia, before the country gained its independence from Britain in 1980.

It was the first book published in English by a black Zimbabwean woman.

It won the 1989 Commonwealth Book Prize for fiction and in 2018, it was named by the BBC as one of 100 stories that shaped the world.

In 1993, she wrote the script for “Neria”, a 1993 melodrama that found a big following abroad.
– ‘Slow-burner badness’ –

It is with her latest work that Dangarembga has waded into post-independence Zimbabwe — a picture of gathering darkness that compares tragically with the golden dawn of 40 years ago.

The sequel to “Nervous Conditions”, “This Mournable Body” is her “effort engaging what I see happening,” she said.
Potential material for the work is everywhere, for southern Africa’s bread basket has become a symbol of want.

The economy is battling inflation and chronic shortages, from clean water to drugs and food — to which the damage from the coronavirus pandemic must be added.

The United Nations has signalled a “rapidly expanding emergency” in which two-thirds of the population will face hunger by year’s end.

“For most of us in Zimbabwe at the moment it’s quite miserable. We are in very difficult, challenging and exhausting situations that leave us quite psychologically drained,” said Dangarembga.

“When Zimbabweans say ‘we can’t breathe’, they mean it. There is this deprivation of hope… a kind of psychological torture,” she said.

She had hoped the situation couldn’t be “that bad”, but increasingly it “becomes apparent that it is really, quite devastatingly bad… It’s a slow-burner kind of badness in Zimbabwe, it’s so very clandestine, and not in your face.”
– ‘Militarisation’ –

Dangarembga’s protest was made in full knowledge of the ruthless response that can meet dissent in Zimbabwe.

Her arrest, and those of dozens of others around thwarted protests on July 31, heralded an apparent toughening by the authorities.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa later warned “bad apples” would be flushed out while he also referred to unnamed “terrorist opposition” and “dark forces” existing in the country.

One thing that worries Dangarembga is the “militarisation of civilian areas”.

“We have failed to build a civilian state. We have built something that resembles a guerrilla state because that is what is happening,” she said.

The ruling “Zanu PF has become a nationalist guerrilla army”.

Public Protests Force Lebanese Govt To Resign After Deadly Ammonium Nitrate Blast In The Capital, Beirut.

Online Sources

Lebanese Prime Minister Hassan Diab announced his cabinet’s resignation Monday, responding to outrage over a catastrophic explosion in Beirut.

“Today I announce the resignation of this government,” Diab said in a national TV address. “May God protect Lebanon.”

Diab’s speech was published by the National News Agency in Lebanon, the state-run media outlet.

His resignation came after last Tuesday’s deadly warehouse explosion — caused by 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate stored at Beirut’s port — that killed at least 160 people, wounded thousands and left many homeless, destroying a portion of the city.

Public anger mounted after the blast, focusing on the carelessness that led to one of the worst explosions in Lebanon’s history.

The huge trove of dangerous material, which officials say was known about for years, had been allowed to languish in the port since 2013. Intense protests erupted, with many calling for top officials to “resign or hang.”

“We are facing an earthquake that struck the country, with all its humanitarian, social, economic and national repercussions,” Diab said.

With the prime minister’s resignation, it now falls to President Michel Aoun to determine the next steps.

After Diab presented his government’s resignation papers to Aoun late Monday, Aoun asked Diab and his ministers to continue performing their duties until a new government is installed.

ZANU PF’s Demands Given To Ramaphosa’s Envoy Forced Them Back To S.A. Without Meeting With The MDC Alliance

The South African special envoy at state hoose.

SOUTH AFRICA President Cyril Ramaphosa’s envoys to Zimbabwe, Sydney Mufamadi and Baleka Mbete, met with Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa in Harare on Monday and quickly left the country without meeting with the MDC Alliance delegation.

This despite earlier commitments to engage the opposition part.

“The MDC Alliance was formally requested to be available for a meeting today, the 10th of August 2020, with the special envoys that were deployed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to Zimbabwe,” MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere said in a statement.

“A delegation remained on standby from 10 am this morning only to be advised at the end of the day that the special envoys would be returning to South Africa without meeting the MDC Alliance delegation, in order to brief President Ramaphosa on the outcomes of their meeting with Mr. Mnangagwa.

“We can only assume that the failure to meet the MDC Alliance delegation was a result of demands made by the Zanu PF delegation,” she said.

How Mnangagwa “Sent Away” Ramaphosa’s Envoys Avoiding Chamisa…

By A Correspondent |  In a classic way the late King Lobengula’s envoys were duped and diverted from meeting Queen Victoria, in the late 1800s, ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa on Monday pushed away MDC President Nelson Chamisa’s aides from meeting South Africa President Cyril Ramaphosa’s special assignees to the Zimbabwe crisis.

Chamisa’s team was kept the whole day trapped between pillar and post as Mnangagwa confined Ramaphosa’s envoys to himself at state house.

They were in country due to atrocities committed by Mnangagwa himself in events that have accelerated for 37 years to date since the 4th May 1983 and l that have seen more than 22,000 people killed. When 5 months later 17 people were shot dead in the open, and more than 50 women raped in January 2019, Mnangagwa publicly boasted saying that none of the

African leaders would criticise him because he has deployed his own public reputation agents
to every country to ensure that they are submerged under his narrative of events. He made this announcement to the people of Mwenezi in February 2019whom he also threatened that he would shorten the lives of their multitudes, in what he termed mazuva enyu achaunyana.

On the 4th of January 2020 Emmerson Mnangagwa announced in the capital city Harare that he would deploy the army against civilians once he suspects that they are guilty of stopping the rain, literally.

Is he repeating the same thing today?

In 2008, Morgan Tsvangirai revealed how Mnangagwa himself attempted to block unity talks between MDC and Zanu PF.

In the same year, Mnangagwa personally ordered the military junta to eliminate MDC supporters across the country.Hundreds of opposition supporters were murdered while thousands were maimed. Mnangagwa would later boast on camera saying he is the one who personally forced former President Robert Mugabe to accent to a claim that Tsvangirai did not achieve the 51% standard mark, something disproved by Mugabe who leaked that the MDC leader had infact won a 72% thunderous majority.

Highly placed impeccable sources revealed to ZimEye on Monday that Mnangagwa has barred Nelson Chamisa’s team from meeting President Ramaphosa’s envoys. At the time of writing, Mnangagwa’s spokesman George Charamba was still to reply questions sent him.

A report at the end of day said that Mnangagwa has since sent Ramaphosa’s team back to South Africa after meeting them alone.

MDC Alliance Spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere announced in a statement saying:

The MDC Alliance was formally requested to be available for a meeting today, the 10th of August 2020, with the special envoys that were deployed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to Zimbabwe.

We reiterate that Zimbabwe is in a state of crisis that has been characterized by a de facto state of emergency,a crackdown on citizens, abductions. arbitrary arrests of government critics and the political persecution of journalists.

The Government in Harare is incapable of resolving these challenges because it lacks legitimacy. We will continue to mount pressure on Mr Mnangagwa to engage in sincere dialogue until the national crisis is resolved.

WHY DO YOU THINK MNANGAGWA IS DOING THIS?

Average Family Of Five Needed $11 000 To Survive In June – Zimstats

Shopping in Zimbawe gets more expensive each day.

THE country’s poverty datum line (PDL) rose 33,6 percent to $11,333 in June from $8,483 the previous month, the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency has said.

According to the agency the PDL measures the basic needs for an average family of five.

The Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency (Zimstat) revealed in its latest update that the Total Consumption Poverty Line (TCPL) for an average family of five was $11 333.

“The TCPL for an average of five persons stood at $11 333,80 in June 2020. This means that an average household required that much to purchase both food and non-food items for them not to be deemed poor.

This represents an increase of 33,6 percent when compared to the May figure of $8 483,63,” said the agency.

During the month under review, an individual required $950 for food alone representing a 39,8 percent increase from the May rate of $679,55.

“We Are Meant To Serve The People Of Zimbabwe,” General Valerio Sibanda Speaks On Soldiers. Is This True?

General Valerio Sibanda

Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander General Philip Valerio Sibanda has lamented over the citizens’ attitude towards members of the army.

Sibanda claims that citizens have misconceptions about the army though it remains a fact that soldiers have always been used by the goverment to terrorise citizens.

“In Zimbabwe, we seem to have a love-hate relationship with the military. There are times when the people like the military and there are times when they do not like the ministry. This is because of social media and what is flighted by different individuals who post on social media.

“The truth of matter is the ZDF belong to the people. The role is to provide security to the State. We belong to this country and we are meant to serve the people of Zimbabwe.

“We find people trashing the defence forces like the Defence forces belong to somebody. They don’t belong to one person. It is unfortunate that we have some among us who would like to believe that this is a foreign force and therefore should be trashed left right and centre.

:I would like to urge Zimbabweans to understand that we are an institution of the State, but we belong to the people of Zimbabwe.”

Mnangagwa To Erect Statues Of Honour For Lobengula’s Warriors

State Media

King Lobengula Khumalo.

Zimbabwe is going to honour more of its heroes and heroines through immortalising them in sculpture and making sure their history is known with the country now erecting a statue for celebrated First Chimurenga war heroine Mbuya Nehanda.

In his virtual address on the 40th anniversary of Heroes Day at State House yesterday, President Mnangagwa said the country, which is home to the continent’s Museum of the African Liberation History that catalogues African history and resistance to colonial oppression from the 1890s until the attainment of political independence, will honour its heroes and heroines in both the First and Second Chimurenga.

“Today’s 40th National Heroes Day anniversary celebrations are regrettably being held in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic. Hence, our event today will not have the usual fanfare, as we have to be in compliance with the World Health Organisation’s Guidelines. Be that as it may, our commemorations are uniquely significant in that we are combining the recognition of heroes and heroines of both the First and Second Chimurenga-Umvukela.

“In this regard, the mounting of the Statue of Mbuya Nehanda in Harare, our capital city, will immortalise the supreme sacrifice that was paid by our forbears. The location of this statue carries added historical meaning because the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Julius Nyerere Way is the spot where Mbuya Nehanda used to rest and drink water from a river that flowed at the site,” the President said.

Among heroes and heroines that the country will honour are General Mtshane Khumalo, who commanded the Imbizo Regiment under King Lobengula that defeated the Allan Wilson Patrol at the Battle of Pupu on December 10, 1893, Sekuru Kaguvi, Chaminuka, Mkwati, Queen Lozikeyi Khumalo, Chinengundu, Mashayamombe, Mgandani Dlodlo, Chiwashira, Muchecheterwa, Chingaira Makoni, and Mapondera, who are all heroes and heroines of the First Chimurenga.

From the Second Chimurenga-Umvukela, the late General Josiah Magama Tongogara and General Alfred Nikita Mangena, Cde Robert Gabriel Mugabe, Cde Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo and Cde Simon Vengesai Muzenda, among others, will also be honoured.

“We must as a people appropriate our liberation war heritage and shape the narratives by telling our own journey to freedom and independence. As such, my administration shall expedite the documentation of the story of our liberation struggle and the associated historical heritage. The programme of renaming roads, buildings and prominent public infrastructure with names reflective of the country’s history is ongoing and a key feature of our liberation war heritage,” he said.

The “list of our national monuments is being reviewed to include liberation war shrines such as the 1893 Pupu Shrine, the 1966 Chinhoyi battle site and the Kamugoma massacre site of 1978 in Masvingo. Other sites such as the national and provincial heroes acres, assembly points as well as former detention and restriction centres have also been made national monuments. Meanwhile, liberation war shrines in neighbouring Mozambique and Zambia will continue to be rehabilitated”.

MNANGAGWA DRAMATICALLY IGNORES MBUYA SILVIA MAPHOSA HE MURDERED ON 1 AUG, SUDDENLY STARTS ERECTING GIANT STATUE FOR NEHANDA WHO HE’S NEVER SEEN | IS NYAKASIKANA SMILING-AT ED?

ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has revealed that his government is constructing the Mbuya Nehanda statue at the spot where she used to rest and drink water.

Government is constructing a statue of the first chimurenga fighter Mbuya Nehanda at the corner of Julias Nyerere and Samora Machel in Harare.

Presenting his heroes day speech at State House today, Mnangagwa said the mounting of Mbuya Nehanda statue will immortalise the supreme sacrifice paid by forebears, adding that the location of the statue was chosen to add a historical meaning.

“In this regard, the mounting of the Statue of Mbuya Nehanda in Harare, our Capital
City, will immortalise the supreme sacrifice that was paid by our forbears. The location
of this Statue carries added historical meaning because the intersection of Samora
Machel Avenue and Julius Nyerere Way is the spot where Mbuya Nehanda used to
rest and drink water from a river that flowed at the site.”

South African Envoys Won’t Disclose What Was Discussed In The Meeting With Mnangagwa

Three envoys sent by President Cyril Ramaphosa to assess the gross human rights violations by the goverment in Zimbabwe yesterday met President Mnangagwa at State House.

The three-member delegation is led by former South African Minister of Safety and Security Dr Sydney Mufamadi who is accompanied by former Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete and former South Africa’s Minister of Public Service and Administration Advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi.

Speaking to journalists soon after the closed door meeting with Mnangagwa, Dr Mufamadi said they are in the country as envoys of the President of South Africa and so not in a position to disclose what was discussed in the meeting.

“We are not going to respond for our President through the media. We will be reporting to the President first, who will then interact with the public in due course,” said Dr Mufamadi.

ZEC Invites Khupe To Replace Recalled MDC Alliance Senators And MPs

State Media

ZEC Chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has declared 15 seats in the National Assembly and Senate vacant after the MDC-T recalled the legislators.

In a gazetted notice recently, ZEC chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba said ZEC had been formally notified by Parliament of the 15 vacancies.

Senators elected on the party lists and the extra women Members in the National Assembly elected by proportional representation are chosen by political parties in proportion to the votes received by their candidates in the constituency elections to the National Assembly.

If one of these seats falls vacant the original party nominates the successor.

The gazetted list of those losing seats in the National Assembly is: Thabitha Khumalo, Virginia Zengeya, Anna Myambo, Bacillia Majaya, Machirarwa Mugidho, Francisca Ncube and Nomathemba Ndlovu. The list for Senate is: Siphiwe Ncube, Gideon Shoko, Helen Zivira, Keresencia Chabuka, Tapfumaneyi Wunganayi, Herbert Sinampande, Meliwe Phuti and Lilian Timveous.

The legislators were recalled in terms of a constitutional provision that declares seats held by members of the party that sponsored them in the last election vacant if the party writes to the Speaker of the National Assembly or to the Senate President to declare that the persons no longer represented that party.

In an interview on Sunday, MDC-T secretary-general Mr Douglas Mwonzora said the MDC-T was proceeding to nominate replacements for the 15 MPs and Senators.

“We are replacing those elected under Proportionate Representative and we await guidance on those MPs that had constituencies. There is nothing that stops us from replacing them because we have appealed against a High Court judgment which interdicted us from replacing two Senators and noting of an appeal has the effect of suspending that judgment,” Mr Mwonzora said.

While vacancies in the constituency seats in the National Assembly require by-elections, vacancies in the special women’s seats and in the Senate seats do not. Instead the political party to which the former incumbents belonged to can nominate replacements. ZEC then lists the nominees. If there are no valid objections, ZEC will gazette the nominees as elected.

The MDC -Alliance has condemned the recalls, saying the recalled Parliamentarians were all elected on an MDC-A ticket while the MDC-T argues that the MDC-A was simply an electoral alliance and that the MDC-T, now led by Dr Thokozani Khupe following a Supreme Court judgment has the right to recall those whom the MDC-T nominated in the MDC-A list.

Wrestler Kamala Succumbs To COVID-19

Kamala

The former powerhouse – who was 6ft 7in tall – starred for Vince McMahon’s wrestling company during the late 1980s and early 90s.

However, he has now passed away after complications from coronavirus.

His autobiography’s co-author, Kenny Casanova, wrote on Facebook: “Just got off the phone.

“Unfortunately, the rumors were correct. To make matters worse, it was Corona that took him; he was one of the good ones.

“Kamala was one of the most believable monsters in wrestling.

“He played the role perfectly, but was also one of the nicest guys you could meet.

“In helping him get his book out there, we became pretty close over the years and I am happy to have been his friend…”
WWE issued a statement late last night saying:

“WWE is saddened to learn that James Harris, known to WWE fans as Kamala, has passed away at 70.

“Under the frightening face paint of Kamala, the 6-foot-7, 380-pound Harris battled the greatest Superstars in sports-entertainment history, including Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker and Andre the Giant.
“He terrorized opponents and thrilled audiences in Mid-South, World Class Championship Wrestling, WCW and WWE until 2006.

“WWE extends its condolences to Harris’ family, friends and fans.”
Harris began his career as the Mississippi Mauler and Sugar Bear Harris.

He later transformed into his Kamala character and enjoyed great success.

Nicknamed “The Ugandan Giant”, Kamala’s character was a fearsome warrior who often carried a spear and a shield.

However in recent years he has suffered with diabetes and needed to have both legs amputated during a series of health battles. – The Sun

Mnangagwa Unwilling To Resolve National Crisis Through Dialogue

Mr Mnangagwa

Dairy Firm Slapped with USD Half Million Lawsuit Over 1 Bottle Spoilt Milk

Milk

One of the country’s leading dairy companies, Dendairy (Pvt) Limited, has approached the High Court seeking an order directing a disgruntled consumer to pull down a video, which he posted on social media tarnishing the company’s image.

Mr Aleck Phiri recently bought 500ml bottles of milk processed by Dendairy from an unidentified supermarket. However, upon consuming the milk he realised that it had gone bad.

Mr Phiri then engaged Dendairy and the company apologised and subsequently offered him the number of bottles of milk he had bought.

However, Mr Phiri refused to accept the milk and instead demanded US$500 000 claiming he fell sick as a result of the bad milk he consumed.

Dendairy refused to comply with his demands and subsequently engaged a lawyer to handle the matter.

An aggrieved Mr Phiri then took to social media.

He posted a video on Facebook and other social media platforms urging the nation to boycott Dendairy products.

In the video, which has since gone viral, Mr Phiri is seen washing his bicycle using fresh milk branded Dendairy and uttering several damaging words about the dairy company.

In the same video, he accuses the company’s shareholders of being racists with “no interest of Zimbabweans at heart.”

Dendairy, through its lawyers Mutatu and Partners, filed an urgent chamber application at the Bulawayo High Court citing Mr Phiri as a respondent.

The company wants the respondent to be interdicted from recording videos, audios or publishing anything on social media platforms which damages its reputation and brand.

Dendairy also wants Mr Phiri to be ordered to take down the video which he posted on social media.

In his founding affidavit, Dendairy accountant, Mr Tendai Pawandiwa said the respondent’s actions were driven by malice.

He said Mr Phiri sought to extort money from Dendairy through unscrupulous means hence there was a compelling need to block him from continuing with his unjustified actions.

“Further, the respondent did not avail any medical report showing that his symptoms had been as a result of consumption of the milk. He however, demanded a settlement and did not accept the apology as he called it ‘nonsensically vague apology’,” said Mr Pawandiwa.

“Of concern is that instead of taking up the matter to the courts, he made a four-minute video attacking the integrity and standing of Dendairy brand and posted it on Facebook on July 16, 2020. I was surprised when I was sent the video on WhatsApp by a friend inquiring on why the respondent was stating damaging statements.”

In the video, Mr Phiri is seen with two cartons of Dendairy milk. He is then asked by a person recording the video what he intended to use for washing his bicycle since he had no water.

In response, Mr Phiri said he was going to use Dendairy milk he had just bought from a local supermarket since “it was rubbish and harmful to health.”

Mr Phiri claimed that after consuming the milk, he started experiencing a torrent of headaches, stomach aches and swelling on his stomach.

“He stated that all Dendairy milk products were not suitable for human and dog consumption. He even mentioned that Dendairy is owned by racist whites who have no Zimbabweans’ interests at heart and urged consumers to boycott their product in supermarket shelves,” he said.

Mr Phiri is yet to respond to the application. -Chronicle/state media

Prince Dube To Join Tanzanian Club?

He said while the gap was likely to be felt, Highlanders had a great set of players that were equally capable of filling the void created by Prince’s departure.

“We have an excellent squad of players and plenty of quality waiting to step in and fill the space left by Prince, so we accept everything and move on. At the moment it’s too early to be thinking about finding an outside replacement, we will have to assess when we eventually get back to training,” Harrison said-Chronicle
