The dropping water levels at Lake Kariba have badly affected kapenta production in Binga.
Fishing is the source of livelihood for most people in Binga.
However, this year has turned out to be one of the worst years for those in the business due to falling water levels at Lake Kariba which have impacted negatively on fishing.
Binga Business Association Chairperson, Mr Pilate Dube, told the state media that most of the fishing rigs were moved to Kariba late last year as the dam levels continued to fall but he is optimistic that with the recent rains that resulted in a slight increase in the dam level, business will be up again.
The prices range from US$120 to US$180 for a 30 kg bag of kapenta and vary from one season to another.
The Binga business community also faces various other challenges which include limited availability of banking facilities, with only one bank operating in the district so far.
