Arrested War Vets Leaders Appear In Court

The arrested senior members of the war veterans association are appearing at the magistrates court this morning.
Prominent human rights lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa yesterday moved in to rescue the arrested leaders of the association, Victor Matemadanda and Francis Nhando.
Matemadanda spent the night in police detention at Rhodesville Police Station, while Nhando was at Highlands Police Station.

The two were arrested soon after the release of the associations spokesman Douglas Mahiya.
Mahiya is being charged with undermining the authority of or insulting President Robert Mugabe in contravention of Section 33 (2) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.
President Robert Mugabe has publicly threatened a violent crackdown on those responsible for authoring a controversial communique which orders him to step down immediately and endorses his deputy Emmerson Mnangagwa to take over power. Mnangagwa has distanced himself from both communique and its authors timidly ducking away while endorsing Mugabe’s moves to arrest them.
