By Farai D Hove| Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ZANU PF party has claimed that MDC leader Nelson Chamisa is lying about the incident of violence which saw the now expelled party former Vice President Thokozani Khupe being humiliated.
This was at the burial of the late Morgan Tsvangirai in February. Back then the party’s former Spokesman Obert Gutu claimed that the youths who nearly burnt Khupe inside a hut were MDC members. Video footage at the scene shows Khupe being constrained by a group of youths in the presence of police officers. But the cops are seen not doing anything at all. It is because of the latter that analysts said there was collusion between the attackers and the police, and that the culprits were in fact pro state party members. This is further buttressed in that 2 months later no serious prosecution efforts have been made.
But ZANU PF spokesman Simon Khaya Moyo yesterday turned on Chamisa claiming that he is a liar.
Khaya-Moyo was quoted by the state media saying, “Khupe spoke on the incident. The police have already spoken about this and the people that were apprehended are obviously not Zanu-PF.
“Chamisa should tell us how Zanu-PF comes in or maybe he should go to the police and ask for records on the incident before he misleads people. This obviously tells us that he can’t even tell the word truth.
“Zanu-PF is not a violent party and we don’t condone violence. This is why we keep on emphasising to all the people of Zimbabwe that we want free, fair, peaceful and credible elections.”
