By A Correspondent- Chitungwiza Mayor Lovemore Maiko and 4 police officers were this morning beaten up by over 50 suspected Zanu PF youths at the town’s head office, ZimEye has learnt.

The youths first stoned Maiko’s vehicle and the mayor went to the police station to make a report.

Upon their return to the town’s head office, Maiko who was in the company of 4 police officers was again attacked by the youths who did not spare the police details either.

Said a source who spoke to ZimEye:

“It seems this violence was pre planned because it all happened in a co-ordinated manner. The over 50 Zanu Pf youths stoned vehicles including the Mayor’s car and he went to the police station to report the matter. He came back in the company of four police details.

When he went to the town clerk’s office, where he allegedly intended to serve him with a letter to clarify on why he was not reporting for duty, the youths followed him there and started assaulting him with chairs, stones and fists.

The four police officers who were also attending to the crime scene were not spared and they were beaten up. Anti riot police had to be called to calm the marauding Zanu Pf youths

Maiko sustained injuries and was rushed to Chitungwiza General Hospital. He is currently at the local health institution where is still being attended to.”

A full council meeting which was scheduled to take place has been shelved due to the violence.
