Police Response

National police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident, stating:

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police is investigating an armed robbery that occurred at Alpha Omega Farm, Marondera, on 18th March 2025 at 0100 hours. Twenty suspects, who are yet to be identified, were armed with rifles, pistols, bolt-cutters, machetes, and iron bars. They overpowered the farm security personnel, assaulted family members, cut burglar screens, and forced entry into the house.

The robbers took away US$74,100 in cash, a pistol, a Samsung S24, a Samsung S23, and a Samsung Galaxy A35, among other valuables. The ZRP appeals to the public for information that could assist in identifying and arresting these suspects.”

The security personnel at the farm were caught off guard when one of the guards was ambushed and assaulted. The robbers then force-marched him to where other security guards were stationed, overpowering and disarming them before proceeding into the house to execute their looting spree.

Chivhayo’s Statement on the Robbery

Chivhayo, known for his extravagant lifestyle and deep political connections, took to social media to condemn the attack and announce a US$100,000 reward for any information leading to the robbers’ arrest.

“It is with UTMOST REGRET that I share a very UNFORTUNATE incident that occurred at my in-laws’ residence in Marondera during the early hours of 18th March 2025. According to information confirmed by the Zimbabwe Republic Police, a case of armed robbery is under investigation involving 20 suspects who UNLAWFULLY gained access to my in-laws’ residence at Alpha Omega Farm and stole a significant sum of MONEY and various valuable items.

I STRONGLY CONDEMN such cowardly criminal conduct and kindly request the public to cooperate with the police by providing any information that could lead to the identification and arrest of these offenders.

To support this PUBLIC effort, I am offering a reward of USD 100,000 in hard CASH to anyone who will provide CREDIBLE information leading to the positive IDENTIFICATION of ANY or ALL of these SHAMELESS robbers, their residential locations, or other significant particulars and ultimately their ARREST. This reward is offered on a NO QUESTIONS ASKED basis, provided any of the culprits are identified and apprehended.”

Chivhayo urged anyone with relevant information to contact CID Homicide, Harare, or other designated police officials.

A Lavish Lobola Ceremony

The robbery occurred just weeks after Chivhayo’s extravagant lobola payment, widely regarded as one of the most lavish in Zimbabwe’s history. Sources close to the family claim Chivhayo paid well over US$500,000 in cash, along with luxury vehicles, cattle, and other high-end gifts.

Videos from the ceremony showed Chivhayo dressed in designer outfits, flanked by an entourage of security personnel and business associates, as he showered his new in-laws with wealth. The event attracted top ZANU PF officials, socialites, and business tycoons, further fueling speculation about Chivhayo’s deep political connections.

A Life of Extravagance and Controversy

This incident adds to Chivhayo’s long history of high-profile moments and controversies. A self-proclaimed “money magnet,” he has previously:

  • Gifted luxury cars to ministers and government officials.
  • Displayed millions in cash on social media.
  • Made multi-million-dollar donations to political causes.
  • Thrown extravagant parties attended by celebrities and politicians.
  • Been implicated in controversial government tenders, including the infamous ZESA power deal, where he was accused of pocketing millions without delivering the contract.

Despite numerous legal challenges, including fraud allegations and accusations of benefiting from government corruption, Chivhayo remains a polarizing figure with strong ties to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

Was It an Inside Job?

The robbery has raised serious questions about how the gang knew about the large sums of money stored at the farm. Given Chivhayo’s widely publicized lobola payments and recent financial activities, some analysts suspect an inside job, with an informant tipping off the robbers.

While police investigations continue, Chivhayo’s US$100,000 reward is expected to intensify the hunt for the culprits.
