US Govt Warns Mnangagwa To Stop Harassing Civic Leaders

Jane Mlambo| The United States government has warned President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government against harassment and targeted arrests of civil society leaders saying it damages the country’s reputation and economic future.

Posting on Twitter, US Embassy in Harare called on the Zimbabwean government to uphold its constitution and respect rule of law to ensure every citizen can contribute to the nation’s progress.

“Harassment and targeted arrests of civil society leaders damages Zimbabwe’s reputation and economic future. We call on the Zimbabwean government to uphold its constitution, respect rule of law, and foster an environment where all can contribute to the nation’s progress.”

Today, civil society groups under the banner of Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum also urged government to stop criminalising the work of civil society saying it is affecting their activities which are aimed at serving the community.
