FEMALE prison inmates are mixing in one vehicle with male inmates when attending courts due to unavailability of transport, a top prison official has said.
In an interview during a cleanup campaign that saw Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Service, Ministry of Justice officers and Prison Primary School pupils joining up last Friday, Commissioner General Paradzayi Zimondi said mixing inmates was a cause of concern.
“This has been so for the past 10 years and what is so worrying is that female inmates are mixing with male inmates in one vehicle from their cells to attend courts.
“Due to shortage of vehicles inmates are forced to stand in the vehicle while mixed to allow a number of inmates to be at courts on time.
He said the situation was worse when transferring inmates to other prisons.
“We have been operating with limited resources especially on transport to take inmates to court and their movement to another prison,” said Comm-Gen Zimondi.
“We received a number of inmates who are on remand for the past few months and most of the suspects are facing robbery cases.”
He urged people to start practicing cleanliness at their homes thanking President Mnangagwa for making it a collective responsibility that saw every Zimbabwean cleaning their immediate environment every first Friday of the each month.
“Today we are joined by our pupils and officials from the Ministry of Justice to clean places where our officers stay and our message is to encourage them to clean their homes daily before going to work or attending lessons,” said Comm-Gen Zimondi.

“What we are doing today is a strong message to our children that is why we are with them today, interacting and directing them on the better way to live life.
“I took my time to find out what these kids wanted to do when they grow up and was surprised to discover that many of them do not want to be lawyers,” he said.
On the issue of Bev showing her sexually seductive dances before the inmates, Comm-Gen Zimondi said he has learnt a lesson and promised the nation to do corrections where necessary.
