Global Update On COVID-19

COVID-19 continues to disrupt essential health services in 90% of countries

COVID-19 continues to disrupt essential health services in 90% of countries

Some signs of recovery emerging but major efforts required to restore and strengthen health services

The second round of a World Health Organization “pulse survey“ reveals that over one year into the COVID-19 pandemic, substantial disruptions persist, with about 90% of countries still reporting one or more disruptions to essential health services, marking no substantial global change since the first survey conducted in the summer of 2020.

Within countries, however, the magnitude and extent of disruptions has generally decreased. In 2020, countries reported that, on average, about half of essential health services were disrupted. In the first 3 months of 2021, however, they reported progress, with just over one third of services now being disrupted.

Overcoming disruptions

Countries have been working to mitigate disruptions. Many have now stepped up communications efforts to inform the public about changes to service delivery and provide advice about ways to safely seek health care. They are also triaging to identify and better meet the most urgent patient needs.

More than half the countries consulted say they have recruited additional staff to boost the health workforce; redirected patients to other care facilities; and switched to alternative methods to delivering care, such as providing more home-based services, multi-month prescriptions for treatments, and increasing the use of telemedicine.

In addition, WHO and its partners have been helping countries to adapt their processes so they can better respond to the challenges being placed on their health systems; strengthen primary health care, and advance universal health coverage.

“It is encouraging to see that countries are beginning to build back their essential health services, but much remains to be done,” says Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director General, WHO. “The survey highlights the need to intensify efforts and take additional steps to close gaps and strengthen services. It will be especially important to monitor the situation in countries that were struggling to provide health services before the pandemic.“

Persisting causes of disruptions

Countries are still having to make important decisions when responding to COVID-19 that may negatively affect access to care for other health issues. Redeployment of staff to provide COVID-19 relief and temporary closures of health facilities and services continue.

Although they may have taken on new staff, 66% of countries continue to report health workforce-related reasons as the most common causes of service disruptions. Supply chains are also still disrupted in nearly one third of countries, affecting the availability of essential medicines, diagnostics, and the PPE needed to safely and effectively provide care.

Communications efforts need to be further scaled up: more than half of countries report service disruptions due to patients not seeking care and because of community mistrust and fears of becoming infected.

Meanwhile, 43% of countries cite financial challenges as major causes for disruptions in service utilization.

As a result, millions of people are still missing out on vital health care. In terms of services, the biggest impact reported by nearly half of countries is on provision of day-to-day primary care to prevent and manage some of the most common health problems. Long-term care for chronic conditions, rehabilitation, and palliative end-of-life care, is also still badly disrupted – severely affecting older people and people living with disabilities.

Potentially life-saving emergency, critical and surgical care interventions are still disrupted in about 20% of countries, reflecting the most immediate indirect consequences of the pandemic. Two thirds of countries also report disruptions in elective surgeries, with accumulating consequences as the pandemic is prolonged.

Among the most extensively affected health services (i.e. those for which more than 40% of countries are reporting disruptions) are those for mental, neurological and substance use disorders; neglected tropical diseases; tuberculosis; HIV and hepatitis B and C; cancer screening, and services for other noncommunicable diseases including hypertension and diabetes; family planning and contraception; urgent dental care; and malnutrition.

Issued ahead of World Immunization Week (which starts 24 April) and World Malaria Day (25 April) the survey reveals that serious gaps also remain in addressing disruptions to services in both these areas.More than one third of countries are still reporting disruptions to immunization services, despite progress in countries reducing disruptions to immunization services in health facilities and “outreach” immunization services by about 20% and 30% respectively compared to 2020. This highlights the need for new and sustained approaches to improving immunization coverage and uptake.

“The COVID-19 pandemic continues to pose serious challenges to global health beyond the impact of the disease itself,” said Henrietta Fore, UNICEF Executive Director. “For children, disruptions to immunization services have serious consequences. As we scale up delivery of COVID-19 vaccines, we have to ensure that this does not come at the cost of essential childhood vaccinations. We cannot allow today’s fight against COVID-19 to undermine our fight against measles, polio or other vaccine preventable illnesses. Prolonged immunization disruptions will have long-term consequences for children’s health. The time to catch up is now.”

Meanwhile, nearly 40% of countries are also reporting disruptions to one or more malaria services. While progress compared to 2020 – with about 10% fewer countries reporting disruptions to malaria diagnosis and treatment and 25-33% fewer countries reporting disruptions to malaria prevention campaigns (including distribution of long-lasting insecticide impregnated bed nets, indoor spraying and seasonal malaria chemoprevention), the reported level of disruption is still significant and needs to be urgently addressed.

WHO will continue to support countries so they can respond to increased strains on health systems and rapidly evolving priorities and needs throughout the course of the pandemic, and to ensure that COVID-19 control strategies are in balance strategies to tackle other health priorities and secure continued access to comprehensive care for everyone, including the most vulnerable.

Key support mechanisms include the ACT-Accelerator, which works to speed up equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, tests and treatments, and the Strategic Preparedness and Response Plan, which guides actions taken at national, regional, and global levels to tackle COVID-19.

The Organization also remains focused on the delivery of the work it has committed to before the COVID-19 pandemic started. Internally, through the “Boost initiative” and the UHC Partnership, which covers 115 countries, WHO has strengthened its capacity to provide additional support to countries so they can maintain essential health services during the pandemic, and advance progress towards universal health coverage.

Super League Clubs Face Sanctions

The twelve clubs that attempted to set up the breakaway European Super League will face sanctions for their actions, UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin has insisted.

Six sides from England namely Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal plus three teams from Spain – Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Barcelona and Italian trio Juventus, AC Milan and Inter Milan were involved in the proposed tournament.

However, the controversial £4.6 billion competition suffered a stillbirth after several teams pulled out due to huge backlash from their fans and worldwide condemnation, including politicians.

Only Juventus, Real Madrid and Barcelona still believe the European Super League can happen.

According to the Mail, as cited by SkySports, Ceferin admitted sanctions for the six English clubs would be the most lenient for leaving first, with Juve, Barca and Real set to be given strong punishment.

“Let’s see. Everyone has to take consequences for what they did and we cannot pretend nothing happened,” Ceferin said. “You cannot do something like that and just say ‘I’ve been punished because everybody hates me’.

“They don’t have problems because of anyone else but themselves. It’s not OK what they did and we will see in the next few days what we have to do.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

He allegedly shot the four while his wife Justina Nomatter Chawama (30) and his brother Advance Dube watched.

Police Warn University Graduates Over Parties

curfew

By A Correspondent- Police have warned members of the public and university students against hosting parties late at night in violation of the curfew order and also engaging in orgies of violence.

This follows the arrest of a 30-year-old university student, Michael Muza after he hosted a party for his fellow university students in Bulawayo.

Muza was arrested on Saturday for breaching COVID-19 regulations.

The students, who were apparently drunk, started to randomly attack innocent people and passers-by resulting in one cornered motorist drawing out a pistol and firing warning shots to avoid being assaulted by the group. Police said in a statement:

The ZRP warns residents and university students against hosting parties late into the night and engaging in orgies of violence.

On 24/04/21, police in [Bulawayo] arrested Michael Muza (30) for breaching COVID-19 regulations.

The suspect hosted a party for his fellow university students in Selborne Park, [Bulawayo] which resulted in violence and attack on innocent motorists who were passing by.

A cornered motorist had to fire warning shots to evade attack from marauding students.

The party organiser clearly contravened COVID-19 regulations which include a curfew order.

Under the relaxed COVID-19 regulations announced by President Emmerson Mnangagwa in early March, a curfew is to be observed from 10 PM to 5 AM as part of the measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

However, some unruly elements flagrantly flout the restrictions raising fears of a third wave as winter approaches.

15 Months On, Court Still To Find Case Against Mary Chiwenga

By A correspondent- Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s wife Mary, has been on remand for 15 months now with the court failing to put her on trial.

This came out today when she applied for refusal for further remand arguing that the courts were now persecuting her.

Mary is on remand on a case in which she is being accused of attempting to kill the Vice President when he was in hospital in South Africa.
She is also facing allegations of money laundering.

Through lawyer Ms Beatrice Mtetwa, Mrs Chiwenga told the court that the State had promised to complete investigations a month into her arrest, but has failed.

Ms Mtetwa also told the court that the State was aware of the complexity of extra-territorial investigations when they made a one month promise.

She made the application after the State led by Mrs Mushayabasa applied for a postponement of the matter to allow police to complete investigations into the matter.

Mrs Mushayabasa told the court that there were extra-territorial investigations that need to be carried out in South Africa.

She appeared before regional magistrate Mr Stanford Mambanje.

Mwonzora Says Chamisa Is Shunning Him

By A Correspondent- MDC-T president Douglas Mwonzora says his efforts to reach out to MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa have been rejected by the latter.

Speaking during an interview with Daily News on Sunday Senior Staff Writer Blessings Mashaya, Mwonzora accused the vanquished ZANU PF G40 faction of influencing the MDC Alliance leadership to engage in “hate politics”.

Said Mwonzora:

I have tried to talk peace with my brother Chamisa with a view to unite the Zimbabwean people and solve the national problems, but these efforts have been rebuffed by his team and himself.

They have resorted to denigrate and humiliate me on social media.

Unfortunately, they are under the influence of the G40s who specialise in hate politics.

Mwonzora also denied allegations that he stole over $6 million from the MDC-T before the party’s chaotic 27 December extraordinary congress.

He accused his colleagues within the MDC-T of using Patson Murimoga to report the alleged theft of funds to the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) in a bid to achieve their political objectives.

Mwonzora said:

This is the work of internal opponents who were irked by my victory at the extraordinary congress on December 27th last year. They have teamed up with some members of the opposition and the G40.

They are sponsoring and exploiting this desperate youth to try to achieve their political objectives. They hope that I would be arrested so that I will be out of the political scene.

Our unique political style and strategy have confounded them.

The allegations are totally preposterous, false and malicious. They wanted to secure my arrest before congress so that I would not assume leadership of the MDC-T.

They reported the matter to the police and even tried to buy my arrest. But law officers work on evidence and this is what these people don’t have.

Some of them tried to accuse me of theft last year only for acting president Thokozani Khupe to write a letter exonerating me.

It is totally impossible for one person to take money as much as $6 million from a party with as elaborate accounting and signing procedures as the MDC-T. But their sordid efforts will simply be defeated by the truth.

Another Earth Tremor Hits Chipinge, Chimanimani

By A Correspondent- An earth tremor with a magnitude of 4.2 on the Richter scale shook Chipinge and Chimanimani in eastern Zimbabwe again at around 6:53 pm on Saturday.

This is barely two months after another quake was reported in the same area in February this year.

Online sources define an earth tremor as an earthquake, especially of low or moderate intensity.

Chipinge district meteorological officer, Lydia Masengu confirmed the quake to Masvingo Mirror saying there were no damages or injuries reported.

She said:

I talked to a number of people over the phone (WhatsApp groups) who felt the earthquake. I have not received any reports of damages but we however will make more enquiries to determine its intensity and the exact areas that it was felt.

Masengu said the eastern border areas have high earthquake activities and these are caused by natural plate tectonics attributed to the East African Rift System (EARS) which extends into Mozambique.

Memory Moyo of Kopa, Chimanimani, told the publication that she was at home when she felt the vibrations at around 6 PM which lasted some 10 seconds.

Jairos Sithole of Gaza high-density suburb said at first he thought there was a haulage truck passing along a nearby road but he later realised that it could have been a tremor after his neighbours also wondered about the vibrations.

Gweru Horror shootings, Fresh Details Emerge

By A Correspondent-Gweru polygamous businessman Peter Dube who brutally shot four people last Friday, two of them fatally, after confronting his second wife on suspected infidelity, also attempted to shoot his five-year-old son, the only child born out of that relationship.

He only turned the gun off his son Nyasha Brendon Dube (5) to shoot at his wife’s best friend Gamuchirai Mudungwe after she wailed and intervened, trying to stop him from shooting the child, it has emerged.

His wife’s young sister Tadiwanashe Nharingo (16), said she held the child firmly on her lap and against her chest on a car seat as Dube pointed the gun at them and later escaped with the child, as Dube changed focus to an intervening Gamuchirai.

“As he pointed the gun at his son and me because the boy was on my lap, my sister’s friend, Gamuchirai, shouted and screamed at him asking why he wanted to kill his own son and me, and that is when he turned the gun on Gamuchiraai and shot her.

“Thereafter, he pursued my sisters, Nyasha and Nyaradzo inside the flat while I ran away with the boy. I then heard two gunshots inside the flat and I knew my sisters had been shot at,” she said.

Tadiwanashe said she was still traumatised by the incident.

I No Longer Recognize Arsenal- Thierry Henry

Thierry Henry says he no longer recognises Arsenal anymore after the club’s involvement in the Super League fiasco.

The Gunners were among the twelve European clubs, who sought to join the breakaway competition, but withdrew their intention after 48 hours due to massive backlash from the fans and the UK government.

Arsene Wenger, who coached the London-based side for over two decades, also criticised club owner Stan Kroenke’s move to join the Super League.

Speaking to the Telegraph newspaper, Arsenal’s all-time top goalscorer Henry said: “I do not recognise my club and what happened just now, with them trying to join a league that would have been closed, makes no sense to me.

“They have been running the club like a company, not a football club, and they showed their hand.

“Maybe it’s a lack of understanding of the core football values and maybe the money was too big of a temptation. Whatever it was, they got it wrong. Badly wrong.”

The Gunners legend added: “I was genuinely shocked like most people and couldn’t believe what was unfolding. I have never talked before, but what happened recently made me realise fans, this is your club. It is your club and I’m an Arsenal fan too.

“I’m proud of what the fans achieved. Not just Arsenal fans, all the fans. The result was a victory for football.”

Meanwhile, fans have been calling for Kroenke to sell his shares after the failed Super League move.

And Swedish billionaire Daniel Ek, co-founder and chief executive of music streaming service Spotify, has declared his interest in buying Arsenal if the current owner decides to heed the calls.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

MDC Alliance Youth Leader Tererai Sithole Arrested

By A Correspondent- MDC Alliance youth assembly president Tererai Sithole was on Monday arrested at the Harare Magistrates Court.

Sithole was arrested in the morning after he appeared in court where he was answering charges of holding an illegal demonstration in Warren Park last year.

According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Sithole is now facing criminal nuisance charges. Police said that Sithole committed the offence on 1 April.

The MDC said in a tweet:

Our Youth Assembly Chairperson, @TereraiSithole has been arrested while leaving court this morning where he was answering to flimsy charges of holding an illegal demo. He has not been advised of the charges against him. #FreeObey.

The Prince Rules The Roost …

At some point during the season, Warriors striker Prince Dube was out injured for six weeks.

The soft-spoken former Bosso striker had to be flown to Cape Town, South Africa, for a surgery on his left arm, which he fractured during during Azam’s league match against Young Africans.

Just before the Warriors’ decisive AFCON qualifiers against Botswana and Zambia, the gifted forward suffered a thigh injury which would keep him out of action for two weeks.

Put simply, Mgadafi, as Bosso fans refer to him affectionately, missed a lot of games in the Tanzanian Premier League.

Incredibly though, the 24-year old is leading the race for the 2020/21 golden boot in an injury punctuated debut season.

The Zimbabwe international has simply been impressive for Azam and the cracker he scored last night against Yanga, which sealed three points for his side, was a clear testimony of a gunslinger on a mission.

He has scored 12 goals and provided six assists and showing no signs of stopping.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

The Brazilians had last lost a game in the league when they were beaten 0-1 by Baroka last season and were threatening to go the entire campaign unbeaten.

They started well, dominating the early exchanges but the first chance fell to Amakhosi, Khama Billiat setting up Leonardo Castro with a brilliant chest pass but the Colombian blazed his effort over the bar.

Billiat was in the thick of things again minutes later, this time setting up Lebagang Manyama but the former Cape Town City man failed to convert.

Against the run of play, Sundowns surged ahead in the 31st minute.

A through ball was threaded in for Gaston Sirino, who rounded off Itumeleng Khune to slot home the opener.

Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt had to make an injury-inspired change on the stroke of half time, when Khama Billiat limped off after a challenge from Anjile Jali.

The Zimbabwean was replaced by Dumisani Zuma just before the referee blew to end the first half.

Amakhosi came back for the second half playing with more urgency but Sundowns almost put the final nail on their coffin when Sirino danced his way past a number of defenders before setting up Maboe, whose indecisiveness cost him dearly.

Chiefs levelled matters in the 71st minute when an Samir Nurkovic forced Lebusa to beat Denis Onyango.

Barely a minute later, Chiefs took the lead when a defence-splitting pass found Zuma, who poked the ball past Onyango.

Hunt’s men held on for crucial three points and subjected Masandawana to their first defeat of the season.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Zim Players Abroad Round-up

Nyasha Mushekwi scored a brace for Zhejiang Greentown in the opening match of the 2021 Chinese second division season against Zibo Sunday on Saturday.

The Zimbabwean striker found the back of the net twice in the second half, hitting the target for the first time in the 55th minute before coming back again in the 89th minute to seal his side’s 4-0 victory.

Mushekwi now has nineteen goals across all competitions since he joined Greentown in 2019 from Super League club Dalian Pro (formerly known as Dalian Yifang).

In Turkey, Teenage Hadebe produced another solid performance at the back to help Yeni Malatyaspor beat MKE Ankaragücü 2-1 in the Super Lig.

The defender completed the most passes in the match and had a success rate of 84%.

The successful outing comes a week after Hadebe made it into the Team of the Week of Matchday 35.

Fellow Warriors player, Alec Mudimu, played for ten minutes in Ankaraspor’s 3-2 win over Bandırmaspor in the Turkish second division.

France-based midfielder Marshall Munetsi missed Stade de Reims’ 3-1 loss against Marseille on Friday through an injury.

The midfielder had been included in the matchday squad but withdrew and watched from the stands after suffering tendonitis (inflammation of a tendon). The date of his return has not been revealed.

Also in the Ligue 1, Tinotenda Kadewere started from the bench and featured for a quarter-hour as Lyon went down 3-2 at home to Lille.

The striker was making his return to action after missing the team’s last three games due to a thigh muscle problem.

In England, Aston Villa midfielder was an unused substitute in the 2-2 Premier League draw against West Brom.

Admiral Muskwe made his seventh successive league appearance in the Championship for Wycombe Wanderers but could not save the side from losing 2-1 to Cardiff City.

The striker, who is on loan from Leicester City, had been instrumental in the previous rounds, scoring twice and created one goal in his last five games.

Wigan Athletic right-back Tendayi Darikwa also retained his starting berth in the starting XI against Burton in the League One.

The defender, who was making his 23rd consecutive start at the club since his arrival in January, delivered a decent performance as his side secured a 1-1 draw.

Bournemouth’s Jordan Zemura was not part of the Matchday squad that lost 1-0 to Brentford.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Mystery Surrounds Death Of Air Zimbabwe Pilot Captain

Kevin Chituku

By A Correspondent- An Air Zimbabwe pilot captain Kevin Chituku has died under mysterious circumstances, barely 48 hours after the death of two experienced Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) pilots and a technician in a helicopter crash in Goromonzi.

Captain Chituku died while alone at his flat in Highlands, Harare this Sunday late afternoon.

His death was announced by Reverend Dr. Lungile Mpetsheni Rhadebe, who is the General Secretary of the Uniting Presbyterian Church in Southern Africa (UPCSA).

Kevin’s sister, Lydia Chituku-Neshangwe, who is also a Reverend with a Presbyterian church, also confirmed the death of her pilot brother.

She said in a statement:

My brother, Kevin. You used to depart and still land back home. This time you’ve departed, never to come back. May your soul rest in peace. You will always be loved.

Zimbabwe Voice quoted sources as saying nothing much was known as the deceased young pilot was alone.

A family member said:

Only after the postmortem is conducted will the picture get clearer. Otherwise, we’re all in the dark despite being close family members with our dear departed.

In a message to the church’s members, which the Zimbabwe Voice is in possession of, Dr. Rhadebe consoled the Chituku family and called on members to join in praying for the family.

The statement read:

It is with a heavy heart and sadness to inform you that Rev Lydia Neshangwe has lost her brother Kevin Chituku. He was found dead in his house in Highlands, Harare, Zimbabwe this afternoon. May his soul rest in eternal peace. Further details of the will be communicated as they become available.

Let us uphold the Neshangwe and Chituku families in our prayers during this difficult time. Rev Lydia Neshangwe is a minister to St Andrew’s Presbyterian, Hillside, Bulawayo within the Presbytery of Zimbabwe. She is the chaplain of the Moderator of the UPCSA General Assembly.

She is also the Moderator of the Council for World Mission.

An Agusta Bell 412 helicopter crashed into an Arcturus house on Friday afternoon, killing Wing Commander Thomas Tinashe Manyowa, Flight Lieutenant Anita Mapiye, and aircraft technician Flight Sergeant Tinodiwanashe Chikamhi, and an 18-month-old toddler Jade Fenyere.

Woman Who Died 17yrs Ago Finally Buried

Esther Nzakwa

By A Correspondent- A Kenyan family has finally buried the remains of its matriarch after almost two decades of a legal battle over a land dispute.

Esther Nzakwa died on August 31, 2004. She was 93 years old. The body has been lying at Machakos Funeral Home mortuary for 17 years.

Her son, Michael Musau, said they are happy because they have finally laid their mother to rest.

He said on Saturday:

Today we are burying our beloved mother who has been in the mortuary for 17 years. I thank all who have assisted us to bring her home. I think most of our siblings, including myself, now feel relieved.

Nzakwa’s body was interred on Saturday at Musau’s compound in Mbuani village, Kola, Machakos county.

Katanga assistant chief Josphat Kyungu told reporters that the case was taken to court by Musau.

He said:

The woman’s last born son [Musau] took the case to court demanding that his mother be buried next to their father’s grave. Their father had three wives. The siblings have been battling in court over the issue.

Three armed AP officers escorted the family from the mortuary to the gravesite. The officers stood guard during the burial that took less than an hour in compliance with the government’s COVID-19 protocols.

There was no viewing of the body and speeches were limited to save time

Factories In Gweru Converted Into Churches

By A Correspondent- Religious organisations in Gweru, Zimbabwe’s third-largest city have converted factories into churches following two decades of deindustrialisation in the once economically vibrant city.

A survey recent survey by The NewsHawks revealed that the giant chimneys that used to discharge smoke now churn out religious hymns and prayers.

Gweru used to be home to thriving companies such as Zimcast, Fort Concrete, Radar Castings, Kariba Batteries and David Whitehead.

However, the firms have shut down in the past two decades, rendering thousands of workers jobless.

According to a recent ZCTU report, new players in the industry operating at full capacity included Chinese companies such as Jin An, Xin Yu and Nelson Holdings.

One Josphat Muroyiwa, who attended a service by charismatic preacher Walter Magaya’s PHD Ministries last Sunday on premises that used to house Cembee furniture manufacturers told The NewsHawks that rentals in the industries are lower than in some parts of the city, for example, the Central Business District (CBD).

Cembee used to employ hundreds of people who made quality furniture, but the building located behind Dairibord is now home to PHD Ministries’ Gweru church.

Gweru mayor Josiah Makombe said Council has offered churches facilities to conduct their services in, but they prefer closed industries.

Said Makombe:

Although as a local authority we have facilities that can be hired by various organisations including churches, most churches however prefer to take space in the closed industries as they are cheap and affordable.

We also used to collect revenue through rates when the industries were fully operational, but now the situation has changed.

COVID-19 Disrupts Malaria Control Efforts

ByA Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa has said Victoria Falls City has achieved herd immunity following the roll-out of mass vaccination against COVID-19 last month.

Posting on his official Twitter page, President Mnangagwa said 77 per cent of Victoria Falls citizens had received their second jab. He wrote:

Victoria Falls has now achieved herd immunity. Last month I received my first Covid-19 vaccine in Victoria Falls.

I am immensely proud that over 77 per cent of the city’s inhabitants have received their second jab.

Thank you to all the health officials who have made this possible.

MDC Alliance Namibia Donates To Jailed Harare Political Activists

Mdc Alliance Namibia donates to the incarcerated Lengwani and Munyaradzi.

26 April 2021

Social democrats who subscribe to Constitutional Democracy under the able-leadership of President Advocate Nelson Chamisa Wamba Dia Wamba joined their pieces together in solidarity with the two victims of Zanupf-sponsored violence on innocent citizenry.

Social transformers in Namibia hurriedly mobilised US$200 to give financial support to the families of the duo following the denial of bail. Munyaradzi and Lengwani fell victim to Zanupf’s insatiable appetite to decimate opposition forces by harassing those who give solidarity to those who have the varlour and nerve to challenge Zanupf corruption and gross abuse of human freedoms.

The two social democrats were tortured and arrested for giving solidarity to our Vice-Chairperson firebrand , Hon Job SaroWiwa Sikhala. Last year, Mdc Alliance Namibia also came to assist Terrence Manjengwa who was also illegally arrested for demanding justice to Saro Wiwa Sikhala at the same captured court. Manjengwa languished in prison for more than 60 days and his family wanted some financial assistance. Mdc Alliance Namibia urges all external Mdc Alliance branches, districts and provinces to give material and financial support to our footsoldiers who are enduring incessant incarcerations and high levels of human butchery at the hands of the desperate and clueless Harare regime.

Solidarity is a core value in Social Democracy. We shall do everything within our means to continue supporting those who are ready to embrace participatory democracy. Mdc Alliance Namibia will soldier on with this nature of solidarity and immediate support to the victims of Zanupf thugocratic tendencies.

Bail is a right enshrined in the 2013 constitution but the duo was denied it after being beaten thoroughly under the feet with acid poured on their faces especially Lengwani. The pictures and videos of the two went viral on social media struggling to walk as a result of state-sponsored violence.

In a nutshell, lets all give support to progressive citizens who are ready to hold dictatorship to account for the selective application of the law.

Zimbabweans in the country and the diaspora must constitutionally demand an abrupt end to corruption and abuse of human rights. We demand the immediate release of Munyaradzi and Lengwani, attending a court session is not a crime. #ZanupfMustGo

Trio In Soup Over Fake Gold

By A Correspondent- Three Harare men last Thursday appeared in court for duping a businessman of US$45 000 in a botched gold deal.

Stephen Mhumbwe, Louis Mudzongo and Mike Tafira appeared before Harare magistrate Dennis Mangosi and were remanded out of custody to June 2.

The court heard that the trio connived and duped a local businessman only identified as Mashiri, who is a registered gold buyer, by selling him fake gold.

It is the State’s case that Mudzongo was approached by Tafira who told him that some people in Ngezi were looking for a gold buyer.

Mudzongo then allegedly engaged Mhumbwe to look for a buyer. Mashiri allegedly fell for the deal and Mhumbwe then accompanied him to a person identified as Mashonganyika to buy the gold.

The State further alleges that Mhumbwe then accompanied Mashiri to meet Mashonganyika who was in the company of one Jena and T-One.

Mashiri was then given what appeared like genuine gold and he paid US$45 000 for it through Mhumbwe.

He later discovered the scam and made a police report.

No recoveries were made as the trio became evasive. Lancelot Mutsokoti appeared for the State.

Covid-19 Positive Learners Quarantined

By A Correspondent- Eight people most of them schoolchildren have been quarantined at Thorngrove Infectious Diseases Hospital and Elangeni Training Centre in Bulawayo.

This follows mass testing and contact tracing that followed the detection of COVID-19 cases at Mzilikazi Primary School and Mzilikazi High School.

Chronicle reported on Saturday that there had been no new coronavirus positive cases at Mzilikazi Primary School but as more results trickled in, some positive cases have since been recorded.

Bulawayo Health Director Dr. Edwin Sibanda said although they are yet to ascertain the exact number of cases since the laboratory which is dealing with the samples is overwhelmed, they have recorded a total of 38 cases, eight being staff members and the rest pupils.

He said:

The first case which was recorded at the school was a worker who tested positive on March 27 and as of yesterday, 1 930 pupils, 55 teachers, and 13 student teachers had been tested, meaning 97,9 percent of the learners were tested.

… From Mzilikazi high school, we collected 30 samples in contact tracing, and unfortunately, results are still pending.

We have taken eight in isolation either at Thorngrove Hospital and Elangeni Training Centre.

Dr. Sibanda said they want all the teachers and other staff to be vaccinated because adults are more vulnerable to the coronavirus compared to pupils.-statemedia

Mamombe, Chimbiri Hauled To Court

By A Correspondent- The duo,Joana Mamombe and Cecillia Chimbiri are at the courts today.

They are being represented by their defense lawyer Alec Muchadehama at the High Court and at Rotten Row court by Mutongi Bhamu.

Said a source privy to developments:

“Their bail application hearing will likely be stalled because of the ferret team which seems to have taken over the case. They are running up and down the corridors.

At the regional court, it is also highly likely that the case may be remanded to May 5 2021.

The delays and blockages seem to be coordinated by state security agents. These agents are working in carhoots with the national prosecuting authority.

The lawfare framework is being used in conjuction with the political framework and so the environmental framework of our courts is now toxic and terrorised.

I see no light and no reasonable progress in Chapter 4 section 50 of our Constitution; (20:13).

The truth is we are heading towards a much more disastrous environment. There is NO RULE OF LAW IN THIS COUNTRY AND ITS UTTER CHAOS which potentially will exacerbate forced disappearances of many.”

Mupfumira Rips Into Mnangagwa Over ‘Catch And Release’

Former Public Service minister Priscah Mupfumira, who is facing criminal abuse of office charges at the courts, told Senate on Thursday that law enforcement agents should thoroughly investigate cases before arresting suspects, saying the “catch and release” practice adopted by police was aiding corruption.

Mupfumira said this while contributing to debate on a report of the 2021 virtual hearings at the United Nations on fighting corruption to restore trust in government and improve development prospects.

She said poor investigations by the police on corruption cases were resulting in suspects being released without conviction because there would be no evidence against them, adding it exposed government to unnecessary litigation in the event of collapsed cases.

“The problem on why we are not properly handling corruption is that you hear the issue of catch and release. You hear that people have been arrested because of corruption, but later you hear that they are released,” Mupfumira said.

“The problem is that there are a lot of false allegations that are going on. So, no one will take us seriously and we will score lowly when it comes to the index. Human dignity should be considered when there are arrests or allegations. When there is an investigation, there should be a good investigation. Law enforcement agents should be well-trained to separate rumours and reasonable allegations.”

Mupfumira was sacked from government after criminal abuse of office charges were levelled against her.

She is jointly charged with former permanent secretary Ngoni Masoka on allegations of corruptly claiming US$90 000 from the National Social Security Authority to purchase personal vehicles.

They have however denied the charges.

Mupfumira told Senate that malicious arrests would discredit the anti-corruption institutions, and result in increased cases of abuse of public resources.

“Let us not act upon rumours because by the time we get to the courts, it will become just mere allegations that will not stand and it becomes a ‘catch and release’,” she said.

“Otherwise we end up losing credibility because of that and it is as if this ‘catch and release’ was just meant for propaganda. Let us ensure that we investigate properly so that government does not face litigation. Investigators should work on fact and not hearsay or rumours.”

Midlands senator Morgen Komichi (MDC-T) called on government to empower the anti-corruption institutions with training and resources to enhance efficient service delivery.

MDC Alliance Youths’ Trial Commences At Harare Magistrates Court

By A Correspondent- The trial of six MDC Alliance party youth leaders commences today at the Harare Magistrates Court.

According to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), the activists are being represented by Obey Shava.

The MDC-A activists are facing public violence charges after they allegedly participated in an anti-government protest against hunger during the 2020 national lockdown period.

The six are Joanna Mamombe, Tererai Sithole, Cecilia Chimbiri, Netsai Marova, Lovejoy Chitengu, and Stan Manyenga.

They were arrested in 2020 and charged with participating in a gathering with intent to promote public violence, breaches of the peace, or bigotry as defined in section 37 of the Criminal Code.

Prosecutors claim that the six participated in an illegal demonstration held on 13 May 2020 in Warren Park suburb, Harare.

Following the flash demonstration, Mamombe, Chimbiri, and Marova were arrested at a police roadblock on their way to the city centre and allegedly abducted later from a police station.

The trio further alleged that they were physically and s_xually abused by their armed captives over a two-day period in Bindura before they were dumped by the roadside.

Joshua Maponga In Cheating Storm

Joshua Maponga

By A Correspondent- Joshua Maponga, a Zimbabwean-born public speaker and religious leader, has allegedly been having an affair with a South African woman behind his wife’s back.

According to Daily Sun, Maponga’s 29-year-old alleged lover from Newcastle, KZN, said although they spent most of their time hiding in hotels, the affair was amazing.

The unnamed woman also claimed she was impregnated by Maponga but miscarried.

She said the relationship with Maponga started when she sent him a message on social media in October asking for spiritual guidance for her calling.

She said Maponga introduced her to one of his associates, a sangoma, but he (Maponga) kept checking up on her regularly.

The woman is quoted as saying:

I dreamt of him one night and thought it was a sign from the ancestors he’s the right person to help me. I began to feel comfortable.

He invited me to Joburg and paid for my travel expenses including the hotel. He said he wanted to marry me as his second wife.

According to her, she used to travel to Joburg at least twice a month and stay for a few days.

On one of her visits in December, the woman said Maponga told her he suspected she was pregnant.

She said:

The results came back positive. But one morning I had severe cramps and started to bleed. My mum took me to a clinic and I was told I had a miscarriage.

I was heartbroken and more hurt that he showed no sympathy. I then realised things are not what they seem. I no longer had visions and dreams.

The woman said Maponga even named the dead baby as per custom.

Although he said he knew the woman, Maponga denied allegations of infidelity, pregnancy, and using juju.

He said the woman was trying to extort money from him and accused her of harassment.

However, Daily Sun said they are in possession of their intimate WhatsApp conversations, which include conversations about rituals for their dead unborn child.

When Daily Sun asked Maponga to respond to the screenshots of their intimate conversations and pregnancy, he asked to meet the reporters on Thursday for a comprehensive reply.

But on the day of the meeting, he asked the reporters to meet him in the presence of his attorneys.

Daily Sun opted to send his attorney an email of the inquiry, whose receipt was acknowledged.

The attorneys had not responded to the inquiry at the time of going to print.

Threats For Kariba Journalist

By A Correspondent- Kariba-based freelance investigative journalist, Obert Siamilandu, has received anonymous phone calls threatening harm to his personal life for penning the stories he does.

Siamilandu first received the threats through a phone call on the 17th April 2021 in which he was told to drop what he was doing (“siyana nezvaurikuita”). When he sought clarity on what exactly he needs to stop doing, the caller simply said “unozviziva” (you know what you are doing). The caller further warned that at this stage he was only warning the journalist, but would move a gear up and unleash  actions to incapacitate and harm the journalist (“yandirikukupa is advice but ukaramba uchienderera mberi I will go on another stage”). Siamilandu had that week broken the story of Municipality of Kariba’s suspension of its Town Planner for improper conduct. The story was carried by Newsday and was an instant hit online.

Although at that stage Siamilandu  took the threat, veiled as advice, lightly , he was taken aback when they were repeated when he attended the opening of court proceedings against three Municipality of Kariba officials in Chinhoyi on Wednesday. Richard Kamhoti (Town Clerk), Saratiere Chitenhe (Director of Financial Services) and Tendayi Mapondera (Ward 5 Councillor) are facing fresh charges of abuse of office as public officers.

It has emerged that Siamilandu, who used to anchor a Municipality of Kariba-sponsered programme on Nyaminyami FM, a provincial commercial radio station based  in Kariba, called “Municipal Talk”, recorded the calls and is now co-operating with state security agents who are on the trail of the caller/s.

Now a freelance  journalist who is a correspondent for several media houses, Siamilandu is a thorn in the flesh of a cartel of corrupt officials in Kariba who thrived on the backdrop of a docile media content to receive brown envelopes and other preferential treatment to overlook clear corruption harming the resort town.

Siamilandu admits that perks and inappropriate gifts are “killing our journalism” and vows not to take his leg off the pedal in the anti-corruption drive.

“They want to silence me but unfortunately they won’t succeed,” enthused Siamilandu.

Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) Kariba Chapter Chairman, Addmore Mbonda, when contacted for a comment, claimed that Siamilandu was yet to contact him, adding “if he did so we could have made a statement or a report to Police”.

The fear mongering is escalating as more and more officials at the municipality are afraid the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC), which is probing Kariba, might unravel more corruption and make more arrests. Ward 9 councillor and lawyer, Simbarashe Lloyd Manyumwa, has also confirmed on social media receiving similar threats. Samu Mawawo, formerly Executive Chairman of the vocal Kariba Incorporated Area Residents and Ratepayers Association (KIARRA) wrote that “I have also received one threat” after current KIARRA Executive Chairman, Dickson Siapunda, had advised on the KIARRA WhatsApp platform that he was being threatened following the arrest of Municipality of Kariba officials.

“Ndavakuvhundutsirwa namamwe maboora ngoma panyaya dzevakasungwa” intimated Siapunda. Mawawo was accused by his caller of having written to Local Government Minister, July Moyo, detailing corruption in Kariba.

Kariba has been dogged with corruption allegations for a long time which some claim has crippled service delivery in the once thriving town. The resort town has no formal modern vegetable and vending markets despite funding having been availed through Devolution Funds. Probably the most baffling anomaly is the unavailability of a constant supply of water in the majority of suburbs despite a huge investment in supposedly functional water pumps. Kariba is blessed with the world’s biggest man-made lake, by volume and availability of water should not be an issue at all.

Residents point to a failed and corrupt leadership at their municipality and are relieved  that ZACC has finally moved in. Better late than never, they reckon.

“If I Were President Mnangagwa, Unfortunately I’m Not”

By Tinashe Eric Muzamhindo- Apparently, I woke up at 3 am, I’m just thinking of the November 27, 2017 event, and I can safely conclude the phrase ” New dispensation, has just been eroded, by a flood of events “.

Can you believe that we have a CEO of National Broadcaster, who has a sports qualification? How many people in the market, who have DBA ( Doctor in Business Administration), yet today, we have a CEO of ZBC with Events qualification? Can this be possible under a theme entitled ” New Dispensation”, or second republican? Impossible !!!

Take note of the following ;

  1. Looting and plundering of national resources is just too much

Gold and precious minerals are not finding their way to the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe, and there is too much looting, and nothing is happening. Great Dyke minerals, Midlands belt, and this is inclusive of Zvishavane, Kwekwe, Gweru, Gokwe, and many other places, and there is too much silence from the Executive, and this does not give a good reflection of servant leadership.

  1. Criminals have regrouped around you

Unfortunately, they will never come out in the open, until explosion takes place in the near future. I want to believe, the very purported to be in good books with you, those who pretend to love you, have regrouped in the name of ” last line of defense”, who will be denouncing you in the near future, have surrounded you, feeding you with wrong information.

  1. Drop all the politics, and focus on development

The whole nation is chocked with politics. We witnessed recalling of legislators, grabbing of farms, eviction of opposition leader from Harvest House, clamping down of activists, and many other narratives, and this does not give a good reflection of the new dispensation or second republican. No major projects, we are simply witnessing politics.

  1. Amending the Constitution is not necessary

Why amending the constitution? The Constitutional making process which took place from 2009-2013 has been reversed. All the Economic gains have been shuttered. Those around you, will never give you an honest opinion on what is exactly on the ground. How do we then expect the increase of FDI? No meaningful strategic engagements with credible international partners.

  1. The ground is not looking good for you

We are experiencing light-weight Presidency, and the value of Presidency is slowly fading away, and the ground is now taking your Honourable office as a ” Common Office”. There is need for you to restore value, as State Presidency.

  1. You must be felt on the ground

Few weeks ago, we witnessed the official opening of a bridge, though it was a political score, it was not expected from a Head of State, to fly to Karande, to open a single foot bridge, you have Deputy Ministers, and local Government officials or traditional Chiefs were alternatively the best, to offer such a service.

  1. State House must be strictly for ” State functions”

State House is an important place for you as the Head of State, which common people must never hoover around such a beautiful place. State House, should never be a common place. It must add value to your Honourable office. We saw the likes of Chebundo, Timveous and many others defecting to the ruling party, and they were paraded on those such important offices, and this gives the impression that, State residency, is now a common place, which is popularly known as ” Plot Number 1″.

  1. You must be felt on the ground

We need more volume, on why you are in that important Office. We need direction as a nation, on where we are going. Towns must reflect new ideas, new thoughts, the face of Harare and Bulawayo cities must reflect leadership. We have old Infrastructure, our roads have become death traps, and we have too many ground breaking ceremonies, there must be a new developmental path or milestone.

  1. Put a Valve on Corruption in the public sector

Corruption has been rampant in the whole public sector. No signs of improvement. No meaningful arrests, and people may be tempted to think, you are part of the looting scheme. Public officials, senior Government officials who have been fingered in highly profiled cases in the country have remained in their positions, which makes your position weaker to fight the graft. Your neighbouring friend, Dr Lazarus Chakwera, has dropped several public officials as a sign of singling out corruption.

  1. We need a Sound Development Policy

We don’t have a proper Economic Recovery plan to deal with the current trajectory. We don’t have a proper National Development plan in place to rebuild our country. We have a fragile economy with no proper apparatus in place to achieve targeted projections.

  1. Tribal card has divided our country

It’s all about Midlands or Masvingo clan in our Government and State structures. The Government is now flooded with people from Masvingo or Midlands clan, which does not reflect servant leadership. Key Ministerial portifolios have been awarded to individuals from these two provinces leaving out the whole chunk of 8 provinces, and we risk putting our country in flames. You have an obligation to unite the country.

  1. Your legacy

You must be worried about your legacy, as a Head of State. You are remaining with two solid years , as Head of State, perhaps before renewing your contract with the people of Zimbabwe in 2023, what is it that you can show them that you were in that position? You need to be remembered, your kids would want to enjoy meals in town, there is life after politics, you want to walk in town without any escort, you would love to be given the title ” father Zimbabwe”, or ” Uncle ED”, and you would love to drive around without any bodyguards, and buildings which you engineered should be named after you, what is it that we can name after you? You don’t need to open buildings that were opened during Mugabe’s era, you should come up with your own initiatives, and this must happen now.

  1. Go through your Facebook posts (2014-2017)

I was going through your Facebook posts , from 2014 to 2017, and I almost wept, and I could not believe, it was your page. In times like these, it is important to reflect on your leadership, and take the simple route of servant leadership.

  1. Government must stop working on TV

What comes out of ZTV, is different from the reality on the ground. We need more TV stations, State of the Art Hospital, state of the art school of medicine, we need spaghetti roads etc. We need more radio stations. Honestly, Mr President, we have one TV station since independence? What has gone wrong with us?

  1. The weakest cabinet

The whole central Government is at it’s weakest point. There is total disconnection between the State and ordinary citizens. Noone cares about what is happening in the Government. Take time to reflect on this, noone is bothered with what is happening in the country. No one has time to watch ZTV, if you ask who is the Minister of Tourism, no one cares much about that. During Mugabe’s era, I would recite all Government officials, Ministers, and ask an individual in the streets to name just three Ministers, you will be luck to get only two, and it is a sign of light-weight Presidency. This needs to be sorted.

Reflect with soberness !!!

The best Mr President !!!

Mnangagwa Brags Over Vic Falls Herd Immunity Success

Victoria Falls City has achieved herd immunity following roll out of mass vaccination against Covid-19 last month.

Government rolled out mass vaccination of ordinary residents in Victoria Falls city last month as it intensified efforts to achieve a 60 percent herd immunity of the population in the country’s tourism capital.

President Mnangagwa also received his first dose of the Sinopharm vaccine in the resort city at Victoria Falls Hospital where he also launched the country’s second phase of the national vaccination programme.

Close to 20 000 had received their first dose when the second round started a few days ago, with citizens still thronging various static and mobile sites for vaccination.

Posting on his official twitter page, President Mnangagwa said 77 percent of Victoria Falls citizens had received their second jab.

“Victoria Falls has now achieved herd immunity. Last month I received my first Covid-19 vaccine in Victoria Falls. I am immensely proud that over 77 percent of the city’s inhabitants have received their second jab. Thank you to all the health officials who have made this possible,” said President Mnangagwa.

Some of the citizens who responded to the President’s tweet, said Zimbabwe has everything to be proud of as the first nation to vaccinate its citizens while others said this will open up the city to international travelers.

Gweru Man Who Shot Four And Killed Two On The Run

One of the Bensam Flats shooting victims, Ms Nyaradzo Nharingo (34) has a bullet lodged in her skull and is awaiting operation at Gweru Provincial Hospital.

Her younger sister Ms Nyasha (31) is said to be out of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is recuperating in a female surgical ward.

Police are appealing to members of the public that might have information leading to the arrest of the Gweru businessman, Peter Dube (35) who is on the run after he allegedly shot four people resulting in the death of two of the victims last Friday, to contact any nearest police station.

Dube the owner of Mixed Blend Car Sale in Gweru, allegedly committed the ruthless crime as his wife watched in horror.

The shooting at Bensam Flats in the early hours of Friday has been the talk of the City of Progress.

Dube had allegedly confronted his girlfriend Ms Nyasha after suspecting infidelity.

The father of the two hospitalised women Mr Bothwell Nharingo said they remained hopeful that his daughters will leave the hospital soon.
He said doctors are working on operating Nyaradzo in an attempt to remove a bullet from her head.

Mr Nharingo said Nyasha is now out of danger and is admitted to the female surgical ward.

“Nyasha and Nyaradzo are still in hospital. Nyasha is out of danger but as of Nyaradzo, doctors want to remove a bullet stuck in her skull,” he said in an interview yesterday.

It also emerged yesterday that Peter’s second shooting target after he shot and killed a suspected lover of his girlfriend, Mr Shelton Chinhango, was his five-year-old son Mukudzei Brendon Dube.

He only turned his gun on his second victim, Ms Gamuchirai Mudungwe (30) after she wailed and rushed towards him in an attempt to stop him from shooting the son.

According to one of the survivors, a 16-year old girl, who was seated in the front passenger seat holding Dube’s son when he opened fire on Chinhango, Dube’s second target was the boy.

“As he pointed the gun on me and his son, my sister’s friend, Ms Mudungwe, shouted at him and screamed asking why he wanted to kill me and his son that was when he turned the gun on Ms Mudungwe.

“He then went to Nyasha and Nyaradzo inside the flat as I ran away with the boy and I heard two gunshots inside the flat,” she said

The girl said she was still traumatised by the incident in which she escaped the shooting by a whisker.

“I was supposed to be the second target but by God’s grace, I survived together with the boy,” she said.

Police dismissed social media reports that Dube was spotted in Bulawayo and exchanged gunshots with the police in Pumula suburb.

Acting Midlands provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said police were still hunting for Dube who allegedly dumped his silver Honda Fit car at the crime scene.

She also said reports doing rounds on social media that Dube was spotted in Bulawayo where he exchanged gun shots with the police were false.

“There was never any exchange of fire involving the police and Dube in Bulawayo as what is being peddled on social media.

“We are still looking for Dube and we appeal to members of the public who might have information regarding his whereabouts to approach their nearest police station so that he is brought to book,” said Asst Insp Mukwende.

MDC Alliance Youth Leaders’ Trial Kicks Off

“We Have Been Neglected Like Mercenaries”: Teachers Cry Foul

By A Correspondent- President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has bowed to pressure and agreed to consider another adjustment on civil servants’ salaries after teachers threatened a full-blown strike last week as their employer moved to effect a no-work-no-salary policy.

Last Thursday, Public Service minister Paul Mavima confirmed the development in Senate, saying government was considering another “slight adjustment” to the “staggered 70%” wage offer tabled last month, which civil servants have rejected. He, however, insisted that the salaries (i would be in local currency as government had no capacity to pay United States dollar-indexed salaries.

“With regard to salaries, government is working out to ensure that workers are motivated properly, but the workers should also appreciate efforts that are being made by government. According to our revenue at the moment, it is not possible for us to go beyond what we have already offered,” Mavima said.

“We may actually adjust or increase, but not with a big percentage because we stand guided by the Finance ministry. I know that there is a problem that some teachers re-port for duty, but do not teach and children are being denied the education they deserve.

“The government team went back to the negotiating table so that our offer may be re-considered, hence Treasury and Public Service Commission technical people are meeting to see how they can increase the PTUZ secretary-general Raymond Majongwe offer to the civil servants. We are saying that since government has opened the negotiation forum, may civil servants, especially teachers go back to work while negotiations go on,” he said.

Last November, Mavima accused civil servants of making outrages demands.

Teachers, who make up the bulk of civil servants, are demanding between US$520 and US$550 or their equivalent in the local currency.

Teachers are currently earning between $17 000 and $22 000, which they say is below the poverty datum line.

In March, government agreed to adjust its workers’ salaries, offering a 70% staggered adjustment, which saw civil servants this month getting 25% of the offer.

Their unions told NewsDay yesterday that they had lost faith in the negotiations.

“We have negotiated enough and nobody seems to care. We are being considered as workers who do not deserve attention as if to mean we are a nuisance. The best we can say is that we are condemned employees. We have been neglected like mercenary prisoners of war and the only solution before us is to show that we are human beings worth surviving, like the members of Parliament who are demanding more than $72 000. We need to rise up and be counted,” Zimbabwe National Teachers Union chief executive Manuel Nyawo said.

Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president Takavafira Zhou said: “This is no time for rhetoric and empty promises, but a time for realism and pragmatic action that can restore meaningful learning and teaching in schools. Our plea is that government must invest in quality public education and the payment of a living wage to teachers must be high on the government agenda, moreso in light of Agenda 2030 aimed at revolutionising education through life-serving skills revolution. Well-paid teachers in safe schools are a must for quality public education.”

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (Artuz) claimed government of using terror tactics to force teachers back to class.

Artuz claimed that its members in Zaka, Masvingo province, had been assaulted by parents on the incitement of some ruling Zanu-PF party members.

“We are gathering that a school head and his deputy at Mapanje Primary School in Zaka have been attacked by parents. We are also advised that the ruling party has launched a campaign to incite parents against teachers. Our schools must be safe,” Artuz said on its Twitter handle yesterday.

But Zanu-PF spokesperson Simon Khaya Moyo yesterday dismissed the reports, adding that if it were true, then the union should report the perpetrators to the police.

“Why Should Zanu-PF involve itself in school affairs? Those who claim they have been assaulted should report the matter to the police. But that is not how we behave in Zanu-PF,”Moyo said.

PTUZ secretary-general Raymond Majongwe said victimisation of teachers by politicians was not a new phenomenon.

“Teachers have been victimised for ages. Politicians should never interfere with educational issues. Those who are meddling with the issues happening in schools should stop forthwith,” Majongwe said.

Last Thursday, labour representatives stormed out of the Tripartite Negotiation Forum meeting in Harare in protest after government said it would not intervene in salary negotiations between employees and employers.

Ex-soldier, White Farmer Grab Tractor, Planter Under Agriculture Scheme

By A Correspondent- Farmers at Velvekia farm Guruve are up in arms with an ex-soldier Christopher Magomo and one white farmer Duncan Wood.

The duo is reported to have grabbed a tractor and planter under an agriculture scheme meant to benefit poor farmers at Velvekia.

“Magomo  and his colleague (Wood) took our machinery and used it in their fields without considering our plight despite the deposit we paid to have the machinery available at the farm,” lamented the source.

“Our major concern now is that the duo is refusing to repair the tractor which broke down in their hands and us farmers we are now being tasked to pay again yet we did not benefit from the scheme.”

It is further alleged that the tractor driver has not been paid for more than three months.

Meanwhile, one Peter Madzvamuse allegedly repossessed the equipment from the duo and took it to a police base where it is currently parked.

Madzvamuse  is now mobilizing funds from farmers to repair the damages since no audit has been done to that effect.

Efforts to contact Magomo and Wood were fruitless by the time of publishing.

Corruption Accused Mupfumira Speaks On Catch And Release Practice

By A Correspondent- Former Public Service minister Priscah Mupfumira, who is facing criminal abuse of office charges at the courts, told Senate on Thursday that law enforcement agents should thoroughly investigate cases before arresting suspects, saying the “catch and release” practice adopted by police was aiding corruption.

Govt Bans Churches From Holding Services At Schools

By A Correspondent- The government has banned religious organisations from holding their gatherings in schools in a move meant to protect teachers and learners from the coronavirus scourge.

Religious organisations, Christian denominations included, renting school premises have been told to find alternative places for their services.

The development was confirmed by the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education director of communication and advocacy Taungana Ndoro.

He said:

Yes, I can confirm that churches have been banned from using classrooms or school premises for conducting church services in line with measures to curb the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The move is meant to protect pupils and teachers.

This is the second time that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has banned religious denominations from holding services in schools.

Last year, Education Minister Cain Mathema banned the use of schools before the writing of the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) 2020 June examinations.

Meanwhile, Gweru Mayor Councillor Josiah Makombe said many churches were now conducting their services in closed council beer halls.-statemedia

TraditionalLeaders Wade Into Marriages Bill

By A Correspondent- Traditional leaders have demanded that the Justice minister must not be given power to appoint them as marriages officers in the Marriages Bill as that would undermine their authority.

Clause 9 of the Marriages Bill, which is currently before Senate, proposes that the Justice minister “may” choose to designate a chief to become a marriage officer.

However, last Thursday in Senate, chiefs raised objections against the clause, saying it must be removed as they automatically qualified to be marriage officers and did not need to be appointed by the Justice minister.

Senator Chief Ngungumbane, born Zama Mkwananzi of Mberengwa, described the clause as discriminatory.

“The first one is, when I become a chief, I have to apply to you as the minister administering this Act. The word ‘may’ means that you can use your discretion to approve or disapprove that application of a chief. To me, that creates discrimination among the institution of chiefs,” Chief Ngungumbane said.

“I think by virtue of me being a chief, I automatically become a marriage officer. It should be automatic,” he said.

President of the Chiefs’ Council Chief Fortune Charumbira said: “When one is appointed a chief, all chiefs are equal. So, you cannot by operation of this Bill, start grading them and say this one is competent and that one in not.”

But Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi defended the clause, saying it was not discriminatory.

“What we are simply saying is we want chiefs to be made alive to what they would be doing in terms of solemnising the marriages of their people. I plead with chiefs that this is a very progressive clause that we cannot remove because if we remove it, it means that government will now accept marriages that may be void without any control or without any training of the very people that they would have allowed to be marriage officers,” Ziyambi said.

Grace Mugabe PhD, Shocking Details Emerge

By A Correspondent- Former University of Zimbabwe Sociology department chairman during the former first lady Grace Ntombizodwa Mugabe’s controversial PhD, Doctor Watch Ruparanganda has made some stunning claims before the court when he said that Grace Mugabe was a ghost student who appeared from nowhere.

Dr Ruparanganda who is a third witness in the trial of suspended University of Zimbabwe Vice Chancellor Levi Nyagura said some of his duties when he was a senior lecturer at UZ was to ensure that the enrollment of the students was per the regulations but he claimed whilst he was working there, he never came across Grace. He said he doesn’t know Grace and he believes she doesn’t know him either.

“I don’t even know Grace Mugabe and even if she was here she wouldn’t have known me, she just appeared from nowhere, and it was through the grapevine that I heard that she was graduating with a PHD degree,” he said.

Dr. Ruparangada further stated that Mugabe was a ghost student as the board did not have any knowledge of her and the topic she was researching. They only came to know about her when she was about to graduate.

He said as the board, they were supposed to have known her qualifications to avoid enrolling standard six students.

“Mugabe was supposed to have seen me as the chairman like what other candidates like Thokozani Khupe did,” he added.

According to The Herald, Dr. Ruparangada told the court that, Professor Nyagura knew very well that for one to supervise a PhD candidate, he or she had to have the qualifications but instead he chose to select an unqualified friend of his to supervise the ghost student.

The former Vice-Chancellor is facing criminal abuse of office charges. The charges stem from the degree that was awarded to the former first lady Grace Mugabe by the UZ’s Faculty of Social Studies Department of Sociology in 2014.

The degree attracted intense criticism and speculation after claims that Grace did not defend her thesis, let alone write one, and that she did not take the required period to complete the doctorate.

His trial kicked off on Thursday last week.

Mwonzora Loses 450 Top Aides

By A Correspondent-MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora has lost 450 MDC-T senior executives to the original MDC-Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa.

These executives defected to MDC-T during the Thokozani Khupe era.

This came out last week in Gwanda when the former MDC Alliance Matabeleland South chairperson Watchy Sibanda, who had defected to the MDC-T then led by Thokozani Khupe, was re-admitted into the Nelson Chamisa party last week.

Sibanda resigned from the Mwonzora-led party.

At a meeting held in Gwanda, the Matabeleland South MDC Alliance provincial executive also welcomed back about 450 members, who had followed Sibanda to MDC-T.

Ntando Ndlela, MDC Alliance Matabeleland South spokesperson, told The Standard that Sibanda had brought with him the whole district leadership of MDC-T in Matobo North.

“Edmore Nkomo, a former leader of our party, who went with Khupe, has come back and almost all of those who went away with him in Insiza district are back.

“The Chamisa-led party is growing big here and we are so excited.”

Another bigwig who had gone with Khupe, Mbiyezwe Nare, has also re-joined MDC Alliance in Gwanda district, Ndlela said.

“We welcome home all these comrades. MDC Alliance is home for all who seriously want a better Zimbabwe,” he added.

“We are getting ready to take over power from the failed government of Zanu PF.”

He claimed that people in Matabeleland were “fast seeing that Mwonzora and Khupe are a Zanu PF project”.

Ndlela challenged Mwonzora to try and have a meeting or mini rally in Matabeleland if he wanted to see that he has no followers in the region.

“People want change here,” he said.

Violence At Graveyard During The Burial of Murdered Nyanga Kids

By A Correspondent- There was chaos at the burial of the Benza cousins in Mutasa’s Sambaza village in Nyanga last week with mourners demanding answers from the deceased’s family concerning the death of the two children.

It all started when Headman Sachirarwe asked the Benzas to tell the gathering what led them to name Solomon Manyama and Passmore Sambaza as the suspects who murdered Delan and Melissa Benza.

The Manica Post reports that a gathering hackled the family spokesperson, Johannes Benza, accusing him of not telling the truth.

Relatives also demanded to know the post-mortem results which the police said they were not in a position to share with the restive crowd.

The two seven-year-old cousins were killed last week on their way home from school. Search parties started searching for them but to no avail.

Their bodies with deep neck cuts and throats slit were only discovered the next day in a disused pit latrine toilet about 2km from the school. The bodies were discovered by students from Mbaza High School who had joined the search.

The Eastern Review had reported that the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the horrific murder of two Grade 1 pupils which occurred in Nyanga last week.

48-year-old Solomon Munyama and Passmore Sambaza (age not given) were arrested for the murder of Dilan and Melissa Benza of Sambaza Village, in Nyanga.

The two children were both aged 7.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi revealed that the police had recovered a blood-stained hoe from the home of one of the suspects.

Flip-Flopping And Bankrupt GMB Changes Maize Deliveries Payment Time-Frame

By A Correspondent-The bankrupt Grain Marketing Board GMB has shifted from its previously announcd maize deliveries payment time-frame of processing payment within 48 hours and now says it would do the same within one week.

The shifting position was revealed by the state media on Sunday when the government propaganda weekly newspaper The Sunday Mail, was claiming that GMB was more than prepared to pay farmers who would have delivered their grain produce.

The Sunday Mail reported that the government had set aside $60 billion to ensure timely payment of farmers, with the GMB undertaking to effect payments to farmers within 72 hours of delivery.

“Farmers who deliver their grain to mobile collection points will be paid within five days”, reported Sunday Mail.

Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Resettlement Minister Anxious Masuka said maize and other grain products have been declared controlled products, meaning that they can only be sold to designated buyers.

“The marketing season for maize, traditional grains and soya bean started on April 1, 2021,” said Minister Masuka.
“All the 84 GMB depots are open 7 days a week. A total of 1 389 buying points have been identified for the convenience of farmers.
“A further 400 collection points are being identified. The target is to establish 1 800 buying points countrywide, one in each ward.

GUNS, ABDUCTIONS OR STATE BRUTALITY WILL NOT STOP THE CONVERGENCE OF THE CITIZENS: MDC-A MASH WEST

23 April 2021

By
Mandava Blessing
Provincial Spokesperson

Our Secretary for Defence and Security leader Victor Muchavhaira escaped abduction by a whisker at FoodWorld opposite Joina City in Harare when two armed men manhandled him, forced him to the ground and attempted to drag him to a white Isuzu truck which had no number plates. The abduction was foiled by alert citizens who heeded his cries for help and rushed to his aid.

Ldr Muchavhaira,a fearless MDC Alliance cadre who was arrested last year for taking over the MDC Alliance Headquarters the Harvest House from the Mwonzora outfit before the State reassisted mwonzora to flush them out using the court is neither fazed nor scared by this cowardly act by the regime but is emboldened to fight it to the end so that such an act of gangsterism will not be found in the New governance culture of the New Zimbabwe.

The abduction attempt is clear testimony of the capture of the securocrats by the mafiaso which has declared war on all discerning voices and a brazen attempt to silence the voice of reason and ultimately crush Dissent.

The Regime is busy strategising on how to annihilate the opposition and silence the voice of reason than to strategize on how to transform the nation’s Political and socio-economic misfortunes. They are investing millions of dollars to fight President Chamisa and the MDC Alliance yet the people are languishing in abject poverty.

Now that the Regime has failed to eradicate poverty it is now focussing and strategising to eradicate the poverty stricken masses.
This is a clear testimony of incompetent and evil Rulers.

As People’s leaders and God’s servants we shall not be intimidated by such cowardly and barbaric acts by bullies who use state resources to muzzle the people’s voices, silence the voices of reason and fight unarmed innocent citizens whose only crime is to ask for checks and balances from the Regime as empowered by the National Constitution.

We shall continue to fight for the people and the nation nomatter how dangerous it may become.

We are alive to the fact that freedom does not come on a silver platter.

We are also concious of the fact that The struggle is not a bed of roses.

This further exposes the Regime’s insincerity to change the governance culture which has been characterised by abductions, harrasment, abitrary arrests and intimidations of opposition members.

However,we would like to catergorically make it clear without any equivocation or ambiguity whatsoever that if they’re to abduct one of us, they’ll have to abduct us all and if they’re to kill one of us, they’ll have to kill all of us!!!
We pledge undying loyalty to the people’s cause and are ready to pay the ultimate price.

TOGETHER WE ARE BIGGER, BETTER & STRONGER.

Journalist Dies In Horror Crash

Innocent Kurwa

A Veteran journalist who is a former Chronicle Sports Editor, Innocent Kurwa (63), died early yesterday morning after his car, a Nissan Almera, was involved in a head on collision along Leopold Takawira Avenue in Bulawayo.
The accident occurred on Saturday at around 9PM near Ascot Shopping Centre and Kurwa succumbed to the injuries at the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) at around 2AM yesterday.

Witnesses said Kurwa was travelling from the city centre heading to his home in Sunninghill suburb. Soon after passing the UBH turn-off, another vehicle emerged from the opposite direction and encroached onto his traffic lane resulting in a collision.

Kurwa was trapped in the wreckage and the ambulance crew later managed to rescue him. He was taken to the UBH where he succumbed to the injuries at about 2AM.

Sunday News Senior Reporter Robin Muchetu, who arrived at the scene a few minutes after the accident, said she managed to contact an ambulance, which took Kurwa to UBH.

“I arrived at the scene at around 9PM and he was still trapped in the wreckage. He managed to recognise me as he was groaning in pain and I immediately called an ambulance, which took him to UBH,” she said.

“When they took him to hospital, I thought he would make it, but sadly I received a call from nurses at UBH at around 2AM this morning notifying me of his death.”

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said the driver of the other car, a Jaguar sedan was speeding and encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic resulting in the two cars colliding.

“I can confirm that two cars, a Nissan Almera and Jaguar were involved in a head on collision along Leopold Takawira Avenue near Ascot Shopping Centre on Saturday night. The driver of the Nissan Almera sustained severe injuries after he was trapped in the wreckage while the other motorist sustained minor injuries,” he said.

“They were both rushed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals but unfortunately the driver of the Nissan Almera, Innocent Kurwa (63) of Sunninghill suburb in Bulawayo, died a few hours later.”

Insp Ncube said they have opened a docket of culpable homicide charges against the driver of the offending car.

“The driver of the Jaguar was speeding and failed to control his car resulting in him encroaching onto the lane of oncoming traffic resulting in a head on. He is being charged for culpable homicide,” said Insp Ncube.

Family spokesperson Mr Wonderful Makura said they were saddened by Kurwa’s untimely death.

“His death came as shock to us and as a family we have lost a pillar. He was a dependable and honest person in whom we had bestowed our trust as a family,” he said.

Mr Makura said the family is yet to meet and discuss on funeral arrangements. Kurwa started his journalism career at the Chronicle in the 1980s rising through the ranks and became the paper’s Sports Editor. He left Chronicle to further his studies at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ).

Kurwa held a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Economics and Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) as well as MSc in Development Studies (Nust).

Between March 1997 and September 1998, he worked for Moto Magazine in Gweru as Editor. He then joined the Associated Newspapers of Zimbabwe (ANZ) where he was General Manager between 1998- 2005.

Upon retirement, he was involved in freelance work. An avid sports writer, Kurwa once had a column “On the Ball” in the Southern Eye.

At the time of his death, Kurwa was an adjudicator for the Voluntary Media Council of Zimbabwe (VMCZ).

A devout Catholic, Kurwa also served as the church’s social communications officer for the Archdiocese of Bulawayo.

Kurwa is survived by three children, two sons and a daughter. Mourners are gathered at Number 103 Walsingham Drive in Sunninghill suburb, Bulawayo.

Kurwa’s wife, Getrude together with her mother was killed four years ago in a road traffic accident almost similar to that of her husband.

Mrs Kurwa, who was taking her mother back to Kwekwe after a medical review at Gweru General Hospital, collided head- on with a PCJ bus just after Regina Mundi High School along the Gweru-Kwekwe highway in February 2017. -Chronicle

4 SHOT DEAD: Gunman Still To Be Caught

Peter Dube (35) is on the run after he allegedly shot four people resulting in the death of two of the victims last Friday….

“He then went to Nyasha and Nyaradzo inside the flat as I ran away with the boy and I heard two gunshots inside the flat,” she said.

-Chronicle

No COVID Tests For Magaya’s Soccer Team | GOOD OR NONSENSE?

QUESTIONS continue being asked whether Walter Magaya has called time on sponsoring Premier Soccer League side Yadah or not as the Harare-based side remains the only team yet to conduct Covid-19 tests.

Walter Magayahttp://chronicle.co.zw

The 2021 season is pencilled to kick-off in just over two weeks following the Government’s decision to allow all sports to resume activities following a blanket freeze in March last year to help combat the spread of the pandemic.

There will be a gradual return to football, with the PSL and women’s football set to get the ball rolling before other lower tier leagues resume.

PSL media and liaison officer Kudzai Bare said by last Friday, they had not heard from Yadah regarding the issue of testing for Covid-19.

“I had not heard anything from them by the end of business on Friday,” said Bare. Last week she said all teams except Yadah had done Covid-19 tests.

Yadah submitted their registration papers to the PSL with the rest of the teams but their failure to undergo requisite Covid-19 tests continue to raise eyebrows.

In the event they do the tests this week, they will have a short preparatory period compared to the other teams.

Yadah chairman Everson Chatambudza did not respond to messages sent to him. Chronicle

Witness Speaks On Grisly Gweru Shooting . ..

AS the country continues to digest the news of a polygamous Gweru businessman who went berserk and allegedly shot four people and killed two instantly, it has emerged that he initially allegedly held hostage his son and his cousin for two hours while waiting for their mothers whom he later shot.

In addition, he also pointed the firearm at the two children but was refrained by one of the women whom he later shot and is battling for life at Gweru Provincial Hospital. On Friday morning Gweru woke up to the news of a frenzied gun attack, in which prominent car dealer Peter Dube (35) shot and killed his second wife’s alleged lover, Shelton Chinhango, also a car dealer based in Kwekwe and her friend Gamuchirai Mudungwe (30).

He also shot and injured his second wife, Nyasha Nharingo (31) and her sister Nyaradzo (34). Nyaradzo’s 16-year-old daughter, who witnessed the horrific incident said she and her cousin, a toddler, who is Dube’s son with Nyasha, survived death by a whisker after he attempted to fire the gun at them only to be refrained by Mudungwe. She narrated the ordeal to Sunday News yesterday.

“One of the shooting victims, Nyaradzo Nharingo is my mother and Nyasha is her sister. On the day of the shooting, my mother, my aunt and their friends went to Masvingo to collect my mother’s passport. She wanted to fly to South Africa on Friday where she was supposed to assume duty on a new job she had got. Dube came home and locked the door. He then told me that we were going to Senga and he also fired the maid and gave her, her salary. I then informed my mother around 8pm and they said they were in Mvuma on their way back,” she said.

The teenage girl said all hell broke loose when Nyasha arrived from Masvingo.

“When my mother and my aunt arrived in the company of their friends, they asked me to tell Dube to open the door but he refused. He told me to pack all our belongings and leave. My mother started shouting at him and demanded that he opens the door for me to get out.

“My mother then told him that they were going to call the police. His first wife also arrived. She said Dube had lied to her saying that he was going to Kadoma to attend to a breakdown and took US$50 which he used to pay the maid.

When my mother went to the police station, he then chucked me out of the house. This was around 10pm,” she said.

She said when the police arrived and found the children outside, they assumed that the situation was under control and left. However, Dube continued to refuse to open the door for the women to get their clothes.

“Dube refused to open the door. His first wife then called his brother Advance Dube informing him about the issue.

Advance managed to convince his brother to open the door. My aunt then started packing and went into the car which was waiting for us downstairs. My mother then went back to collect her bag as well,” she said.

The 16-year old said Dube suddenly went berserk and shot the alleged boyfriend Chinhango, Mudungwe, Nyasha and Nyaradzo.

“Dube then came down the stairs running and went into his car and took a pistol. He then came to the Toyota Haice that we were in and confronted the driver (Shelton) accusing him of snatching his wife. He cocked his gun and shot the driver on the head. I then opened the door and ran away. He then pointed the gun at me but my mother’s friend Gamuchirai Mudungwe restrained him. He then turned on her and shot her on the chest. He went upstairs and shot my mother and my aunt. After that I saw the maid coming downstairs screaming for help,” she said.

The two sisters who are battling for life at Gweru Provincial Hospital are said to have undergone a lifesaving surgery yesterday. Dube is still on the run but sources said he contacted his friend and police later on Friday and promised to hand himself over. Acting Midlands police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Ethel Mukwende said police were still looking for him.- The Sunday News

Prince Dube Eyes Golden Boot

HIS debut season at Azam might have been punctuated by injuries yet Zimbabwean striker, Prince Dube is gunning for the Golden Boot in the Vodacom Tanzania Mainland Premier League.

With seven matches left for Azam, Dube is the joint top scorer in the Tanzanian Premier League with 11 goals, the same as Meddie Kagere of Simba Sports Club. Kagere, a Rwandan national has won the Golden Boot in Tanzania’s top league for two seasons in a row and is looking at making it three on the trot. The 34-year-old former Gor Mahia striker scored 22 goals last season having found the target 23 times in the period 2018/19.

Ivorian Kipre Tchetche was the last Azam player to win the league’s Golden Boot when he netted 17 goals in the 2012/13 season to help the team finish second. Kagere will not have it easy this season with Dube very much in the race for the top scorer’s award. Dube was on target on Thursday when Azam secured a 2-2 away against Dodoma, with the other goal for the Chamazi Millionaires coming from former FC Platinum striker Obrey Chirwa.

The Warriors striker now has 11 goals and six assists in the league for third placed Azam. What gives Dube an advantage over Kagere is that the Zimbabwean is Azam’s first choice striker and penalty taker. Kagere on the other hand has been relegated to second choice striker behind Chris Mugalu.

John Bocco of Simba is in 10 goals, with the Azam duo of Idd Seleman and Ayoub Lyanga both on eight.

Last season, the leading top scorer for Azam in the league was Chirwa with 12 goals. It has not been a smooth season for Dube since he joined the Tanzania free spenders from Highlanders in August last year.

Dube was sidelined for six weeks after he fell and broke an ulna bone on his left forearm in a Tanzania Mainland Premier League clash with Young Africans played at the Azam Complex Stadium in November last year.

Azam sent the Warriors striker to the Vincent Pallotti Hospital in Cape Town South Africa for treatment. Dube underwent a successful operation on his forearm at the beginning of December and made a return to action in January.

It will be a huge achievement for Dube if he wins the Golden Boot and that might show national team coach Zdravko Logarusic just how good he is since the Croatian believes he is a playing in a smaller league.

Dube has opportunity to add to his goal tally when Azam face Young Sports Club away at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium this evening. — The Sunday News

Dendera Supremo Keen To Assist Rising Musicians

One of the longest-serving Dendera musicians, Allan Chimbetu says his doors are always open for up-and-coming artistes who want assistance.

Allan is the surviving sibling of Simon, Brian and Naison, who are all credited for promoting Dendera genre.

Having started music in 1992, Allan otherwise known as Professor, feels he has enough experience to be able to nurture new talent and show them the way.

“Technically I started music in 1992 but I would want to start when Simon died in 2005. I made the toughest decision to take over the band. I just told myself that Dendera had to go on despite the death of my brothers,” said Chimbetu.

Given his own challenges, Chimbetu says music is an industry which requires fortitude and courage.

“I had to wake up every day and focus on my music. I faced so many challenges though, especially when there was no will left by the deceased. There were quarrels but my focus was music and it led me to release my first album titled Sonny in 2005 which was well received,” he said.

Chimbetu says if it was not for his passion for music, he could have dumped the band a long time ago.

“I went to the United Kingdom more than 12 times on musical tours with Simon and a number of our band members left and ran away. I remained because of my passion for music and not money,” he said.

Following the death of his siblings some of their children also decided to take up music,

Some fans were divided as to who the real deal in Dendera music was.

Sulu, Tyson, Saaiwe and Douglas are some of the children who decided to take the music route.

Allan says despite a few disagreements here and there, he had managed to pull the family together.

“Yes, there were some disagreements just like any other family but as the remaining father, my mission is to bring the family together, I will not back down to any challenge as I try to bring the family together,” he said.

Recently, Allan teamed up with his son, Sulu on the track Nhodzerai from his latest Urgent matter album.

Besides featuring members of his own family, Allan also teamed up with Australia-based Cozy Cozile on another track Hombarume.

He said he wanted to assist not only members of this family but every artiste.

“It’s high time I help up-and-coming artistes because of the experience I have acquired from the time I started this music business. I’m open to those who want to do music,” said Allan.- Chronicle

Nyasha Mushekwi Grabs Brace In China

GUNS, ABDUCTIONS OR STATE BRUTALITY WILL NOT STOP THE CONVERGENCE OF THE CITIZENS: MDC-A MASH WEST

23 April 2021

A 15-minute daily stretching session can help make your joints more limber.Javier Diez/
If you have psoriatic arthritis, you may worry that exercise will worsen your condition. In fact, physical activity is an essential part of caring for your health: It can improve your strength, endurance, and flexibility, and help you manage your weight.

While all forms of exercise are beneficial, gentle stretches can play a key role in relieving psoriatic arthritis symptoms.

When your tendons are loose and limber, you may be less likely to experience pain and tightness, according to the patient advocacy group CreakyJoints.

Plus, “increasing your flexibility helps prevent injury,” says M. Elaine Husni, MD, MPH, the vice chair of rheumatology and the director of the arthritis and musculoskeletal center at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. “Daily stretching is an underemphasized part of psoriatic arthritis exercise.”

You’ll want to devote at least 15 minutes a day to stretching, but you should consider doing more, says Dr. Husni.

To get off on the right foot with any new stretching regimen, “you should start with a physical therapist to evaluate your physical ability and come up with a plan,” Husni says. “Once you can stretch without injuring yourself, you can make the plan part of your daily routine.”

Physical therapists are licensed by the state where they practice and work in a variety of settings, according to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR), including hospitals, outpatient clinics, and private practices.

In addition to creating a stretching plan tailored to your individual needs, a physical therapist will teach you how to monitor and adjust your program in response to changes in your psoriatic arthritis pain level, disease activity, and response to treatment, says the ACR.

Stretches for Psoriatic Arthritis Hands and Fingers
hands laid out on table

“Fingers are a common site of psoriatic arthritis pain, swelling, and stiffness,” Husni says. To stretch them:

Rest your hand on a table palm up, and bend the fingers together all the way in towards the palm.
Rest your hand on the table palm down, and, one at a time, lift each finger as high as you can.
Hold your hand out and touch each fingertip to the tip of your thumb.
Repeat five times.
Here’s a simple stretch for hands:

Rest your forearm on a table and let your hand hang down.
Clench your fingers while flexing your wrist so your fist comes up as far as possible.
Repeat 10 times

To improve flexibility in your elbow and forearm, try this stretch:

Rest your palm flat on a table with your elbow close against your side.
Flip your hand from palm down to palm up, keeping your elbow still.
Repeat 10 times.

Stretch-and-hold exercises can improve flexibility in your neck. “When you do your stretches, you want to stay and hold, but not to the point where it becomes painful,” Husni says. “Stop if it hurts.”

To stretch your neck:

Sitting upright in a straight-backed chair, bend your head sideways toward your shoulder; stretch and hold for about five seconds.
Keeping your back still, turn your head to the other side as far as you can without pain, holding the stretch for five seconds.
Repeat five times.

“There should not be any bounce in these stretching exercises,” says Husni. “Slow and easy does it.”

To stretch your back:

Lie on your back on a firm, flat surface with your feet flat on the ground and your knees bent.
Tighten your belly to push your back as flat as you can for five seconds, then release.
Repeat 10 times.

For another stretch, roll your knees from side to side to side while keeping your back on the ground.

One more stretch: Start by lying on your back on a firm, flat surface. Push down with your feet and shoulders while gently lifting your lower back off the ground.

Man Hangs Self At In-laws’ House

By A Correspondent- A 30 year old man from Chakaipa Village under Chief Gwesela in Zhombe hanged himself at his in-law’s homestead following a misunderstanding with his wife over infidelity.

Peter Mlauzi hanged himself after discovering that his wife Blessing Manokore was having an affair. Chief Gwesela confirmed the development to B-Metro saying the village was still shocked by the incident.

“Mlauzi’s actions shocked the whole village and we’re still trying to come to terms with this unusual incident.

“He was a very hard-working man and he worked tirelessly as a gold panner to provide for his family and his in-laws,” he said.

Chief Gwesela said on the fateful day, Mlauzi discovered that his wife was having an affair with another man from the village.

“Upon hearing the news of his wife’s illicit affair, he felt betrayed and he decided to end his life by hanging himself at his mother-in-law’s homestead,” said Chief Gwesela.

He said Mlauzi had since been buried. Chief Gwesela also said that he was yet to meet the Manokores so that a cleansing ceremony is conducted as the incident could be a bad omen to the village.

“I am meeting with the family next week so that we conduct a cleansing ceremony to help appease Mlauzi’s spirit because if that is not done, we might have problems,” he said.

He appealed to members of the public to always seek intervention from a third party in cases of disputes.-bmetro

Lobengula High School Pupil Stabs Classmate

By A Correspondent- In a dramatic incident, a Form Four pupil at Lobengula High School in Bulawayo stabbed his classmate on the shoulder with an okapi knife as punishment for poking fun at him while in class.

According to a source at the school, the mini-drama which lasted about 10 minutes happened on Monday outside the school premises.

The source said while Mike Siziba (16) and his classmate Simbarashe Manjokota were a few metres away from the school premises, heading home, their fellow classmate Keith Mlauzi (17) approached them while huffing in heavy anger.

“He started accusing Mike of being in the habit of poking fun at him when in class thereby belittling him. The situation became tense as the angry Keith started to push and shove Mike,” said a teacher who requested strict anonymity.

The situation spiralled out of control and Keith being on a mission to settle a score, fumbled in his pocket and took out a knife and stabbed Mike on the shoulder.

“He left the knife stuck on his shoulder and ran away. Mike writhed in agony. Luckily a senior teacher arrived at the scene and rendered first aid on him before he phoned an ambulance which came after about 30 minutes. He was ferried to Mpilo Central Hospital where he was treated,” said the teacher.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident: “We arrested a 17-year-old student who stabbed his classmate after he accused him of poking fun at him in class. We condemn school bullying and would like to warn such learners who engage in bullying, that the long arm of the law will catch up with them.”

Nyanga Man Confesses To Wizardry

By A Correspondent- A man from Nyanga, Manicaland Province, recently confessed before a traditional court that he was a wizard and had acquired the charms from a Malawian traditional healer based in Marondera.

Isaiah Munembe’s relatives are now baying for his blood and demanding that he releases them from his wizardry web.

Munembe’s relatives brought him to Chief Saunyama’s court, with his younger brother, Anthony Munembe, and his sister-in-law Maybe Saunyama accusing him of sending his snake to kill their child, Anthony Junior.

Anthony Junior died recently from a snake bite and two weeks after his burial, the snake was spotted at the Munembe homestead attempting to attack his two siblings. In his confession before Chief Saunyama’s court, Isaiah said:

I used to walk on a wire and I was famous because of the theatrics. I had a large following but little to show for it.

However, after getting some ‘anointment oil’, my financial fortunes changed

I did not know that by applying python oil every night, the snake was finding its way into my life and setting base at my family home in Nyanga.

Little did I also know that I was being initiated into wizardry. While everyone was fast asleep, I would be up and roaming the village

Isaiah also told the court that he did not know if he was the one responsible for the death of his nephew.

However, Anthony Junior’s mother told the court that after her son was bitten by the snake, Munembe came looking for it and told them where to bury the deceased and the disappeared.

A Nyanga traditional healer, Sekuru Shingirayi Mukotsanjera, removed a stone, a needle, marijuana, and a small mirror from Isaiah’s body.

During the session with Sekuru Mukotsanjera, Munembe shocked everyone when he allegedly removed a sewing needle from his relative only identified as Mai Ndlovu.

Mai Ndlovu had reportedly been complaining of pain in her knee for many years.-ManicaPost

7 Zimbabweans On Interpol’s Most Wanted List

By A Correspondent- Seven Zimbabweans, including a man from Gweru who brutally murdered his wife and left their six-month-old son suckling from the corpse, have been placed on the International Police Organisation (Interpol) most wanted list for evading arrest after allegedly committing serious offences.

Tanaka Rusike (33) from Gweru, who has been on the run since December 2017, is wanted for allegedly killing his spouse, Nozipho Tecla Mpofu, in cold blood and leaving their child suckling and cuddling his mother’s corpse for nearly 24 hours before the crime was discovered.

Alert neighbours discovered the child beside his mother’s lifeless body after he started crying the following morning.

The seven are among 7 600 criminals who have been placed on Interpol’s Red Notice and are wanted for committing offences ranging from terrorism, corruption, human trafficking and escaping lawful custody.

A Red Notice is a request to law enforcement agencies worldwide to locate and provisionally arrest a person pending extradition, surrender, or similar legal action.

The notice is issued for fugitives wanted either for prosecution or to serve a sentence after judicial proceedings in the country issuing the request.

Interpol has issued 34 Red Notices for fugitives wanted in 15 SADC countries, with Eswatini (14) accounting for the most wanted fugitives followed by South Africa (9).

However, Interpol does not publish the names of all wanted criminals, a deliberate tactic to avoid alerting fugitives who will likely limit travelling once they are aware of a Red Notice against their name.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told The Sunday Mail yesterday that Rusike has been on the run for more than three years.

“I can confirm that Tanaka Rusike of Gweru is on the Red Notice list,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

“He is wanted in connection with a murder case involving his wife which took place in 2017.

“Being placed on the Red Notice indicates that he is wanted and can be arrested anywhere in the world where he is located.”

Interpol is also looking for Bornface Madunusa (34) of Gokwe, who is wanted by police to answer to charges of murder and has also been placed on the most wanted list.

In 2018, Madunusa, who was based at 5 Infantry, Battlefields in Kwekwe allegedly murdered his 28-year-old wife Eunice Marimbire by strangling her with a rope after accusing her of infidelity.

He fled from the scene leaving Marimbire’s body lying on the floor, covered by blankets before it was discovered by his landlord the following morning.

Moreblessing Mavuso (46) from Bulawayo, who is also on the Red Notice, is wanted by police in Eswatini for fraud and corruption.

According to Eswatini media reports, Mavuso, who was married to former parliamentarian Machawe Mavuso, disappeared soon after she was charged for making fraudulent payments while working for the country’s Finance Ministry as an assistant accountant.

Two of her accomplices who worked in the Ministry of Agriculture were arrested and appeared in court.

Mavuso is alleged to have taken a three-week leave from work after being summoned by the Eswatini civil service commission to answer to the fraud charges.

She, however, did not report back to work when her leave lapsed.

South African police, through Interpol, are looking for Andrew Ndlovu (31), who also uses the alias Andrea Druza, from Gweru to answer to allegations of house breaking and murder.

Xolani Dube (26) and Tumelo Moyo (27) are wanted in Botswana to answer to charges of escaping from lawful custody.

Police are also looking for Travor Manata (42) from Hwedza who is wanted for allegedly committing murder.

Interpol is the world’s largest international police organisation, with 190 member countries, including Zimbabwe, whose work includes facilitating cross-border collaboration between law enforcement organisations.

Police Boss Pleads For Accomodation For 30k Officers

Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Goodwin Matanga has pleaded with the government to urgently provide accommodation for 30 000 police officers who are reportedly renting private accommodation.

Matanga said the current set up is affecting the officers’ execution of their duties at the same time endangering their security.

Speaking during his visit to Masvingo police on Thursday last week, Matanga said:

I wish to place on record that, the Zimbabwe Republic Police has only 12 000 housing units that are accommodating 18 760 police officers. Of these, 10 945 are sharing. Resultantly, over 30 000 police officers are renting private accommodation, a situation that compromises the security of our members. It is, therefore, my fervent hope and prayer that Government urgently intervenes.

Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe also remarked that the shortage of accommodation among police officers was a major concern.

He said:

Certainly, resource constraints manifest through an array of challenges, key among them being the shortage of residential and office accommodation, transport and non-payment of travelling and subsistence allowances. The shortage of accommodation which has, unfortunately, resulted in some members seeking private rental accommodation has always been a cause of concern.

This position is unpleasant given that apart from compromising the security of members, it also has huge financial implications. To that end, efforts are being made to ensure police officers and members get decent accommodation.

Kazembe said the government was aware of the challenges the ZRP was facing adding that efforts are being made to improve police effectiveness through the procurement of more operational vehicles-statemedia

Harare City Council Declares War On Residents

The Harare City Council is threatening to unleash debt collectors, disconnect water supplies and take legal action on all ratepayers who are in arrears for rates with the local authority.

In some parts of Harare, the Local authority has dispatched letters of demand in a bid to coerce ratepayers to pay their dues.

“Before commencing legal proceedings in terms of the legislation, I am obliged to demand full payment of the amount stated above within 14 days of this notice, failing which, legal action will be effected without further warning to you, with costs charge to your account”, reads part of the letter from the Treasury Department.

A New Mabvuku resident who was in receipt of the letter of “final demand” from the local authority said, “It should be residents dragging the Council to court for non-provision of services, right now I live with raw sewerage which they can’t repair, no water we will also organize court action this is not fair.”

The City is also threatening to disconnect water supplies to all its debtors and claims that it is now owed ZWL$5 Billion.

The demand for full payment of debts comes at a time when the local authority is not providing the services which it is claiming payment for which some areas have gone for more than 10 years without water, toilets flooded with sewer and piles of uncollected garbage have become permanent features in high density areas.

On its social media platform, the Harare City Council has warned “Will soon deploy debt collectors to collect all outstanding amounts. The best thing is to do a payment plan now.”

In 2018 the use of debt collectors was declared unlawful after Well Cash Debt Collectors were hired by the City of Harare were declared unlawful as  it violated section 9(2)(b) of the Legal Practitioners Act 27:07.

Residents are entitled to law and have a legal right to administrative action that is lawful, reasonable and fair in terms of Section 68 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

The recent astronomic increases of rates by more than 400% premised on a faulty software currently used for billing by the local authority have casted doubt over the authenticity of the Council bills.

Some residents who have been religiously paying rates received ballooned bills with payments they have made to the local authority not captured or deducted.

Ratepayers across the City have been flocking to CHRA offices seeking for assistance over their ballooned bills. “I have paid every month my rates in full but am surprised that I now owe council ZWL30 000”, said a dejected Highfields woman.

CHRA reiterates its position that the amounts which the City is claiming to be owed are founded on a chaotic, shambolic and non-functional billing system hence there is a need for a real debt audit for the City debt.

CHRA also warns ratepayers not to be coerced to enter into payment plans on amounts of debts they are not agreeable to with the local authority and they should pay for services rendered.

We further call upon the City of Harare to depart from the SAGE Pastel software it is using for billing and payments and find an effective software that has the ability to show the balance after payments are made in real time.
