“81% Of Primary Schools Do Not Have Internet Access”

81% of primary schools in Zimbabwe have no access to the internet while only 19% have, a status quo that is heavily stalling e-learning programmes in primary schools.

This was revealed by the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) census of 2017.

The census methodology on access to the internet is defined as follows; access of an education institution to the Internet means the Internet is generally available for use by members of the institution at any time, regardless of actual use.

The census covered a total of 5 569 primary schools in Zimbabwe and of these 886 have internet access and 4 683 have no internet access.

According to the census, the following are the number of schools that have access to the internet by province; Harare 180, Bulawayo 101, Mash west 164, Masvingo 101, Midlands 77, Mat North 35, Mat South 43, Mash Central 33, Mash East 63 and Manicaland 83.

In an interview with Community Podium, the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Hon Cain Mathema said Government seized with the matter and plans are in place to provide schools with internet and e-learning infrastructure.

The minister acknowledged the herculean task of providing schools with e-learning facilities given the state of the economy.

“We are working to provide all our schools with e-learning facilities. It is not an easy task looking at the state of our economy but plans are in place” said Mathema.

Dr Themba Nyoni Director of Baobab Educational Assessment Centre said this is a serious worry that needs to be tackled by all sectors of society as a vast majority of learners (mostly in the rural areas) do not have internet access.

“Learners are encouraged to be active participants in their learning. Government has strongly advocated for Enquiry Learning – to develop a critical mind as opposed to development of robots through rote learning. The internet broadens the mind. It takes the learner to places where most of them would never physically reach.  It helps the learner to explore and be informed,” he added.

Nyoni further explained that the end game in education is to create an informed pool of workforce and entrepreneurs. He went on to challenge the private sector to chip in because it stands to ultimately benefit.

“ICT is the now and the future. It just makes sense that all learners should be conversant with this field so that we give them an equal footing and competition with their peers across the world. Government alone cannot tackle this issue. It should be compulsory for the private sector to put aside a certain percentage of their profits and contribute towards an education fund. They are the future beneficiaries and so they should invest right from the beginning at Primary school level” concluded Nyoni.

Former Minister of Education, Sports and Culture David Coltart said the insufficiencies in e-learning and in education in general have been exposed this year. It’s has been the worst educational year.

“The harsh reality is that the e-learning programme has not reached the vast majority of children in our country. The few private schools that have managed to implement e-learning programmes have been deficient in many respects. This is a crisis that has been exposed by COVID19. The government is not in a position to implement the e-learning programme which will benefit the vast majority of children. The investment in the physical infrastructure of schools is catastrophic, the fabric of our schools is falling apart”, said Coltart.

The National President of Amalgamated Rural Teachers Association of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) Obert Masaraure said the e-learning programme has become discriminatory and further divides the society into the ‘haves’ and have nots’.

“We urge government to enhance the process of infrastructure development that allows for our primary schools to have access and availability of the internet to enhance e-learning”he added.

“In the interim, for rural schools we propose offline remote learning that ensures that rural children do not get left out as emergencies such as COVID19 pandemic have worsen education processes. Government should develop an education emergency response strategy in preparation for other foreseeable emergencies. Both parents and teachers must not only have internet access but also be capacitated to the internet resources” concluded Masaraure.

Mr Muziwandile Dube, a parent in Tsholotsho said that the absence or inadequacy of e-learning infrastructure does not augur well for learners in Zimbabwe and government must prioritise e-learning in primary schools in its budgetary allocations.

“Government should prioritise budgetary allocations for primary schools.”

Dube also made an impassioned plea to service providers to ensure that their services are affordable to primary schools

“Most primary schools in Zimbabwe rely on school fees which is paid in local currency which many ICT providers do not usually accept as they prefer foreign currency. Service providers such as Telone should review their prices downwards to make their services affordable for primary schools,” said Dube.

Man Steals From Lover’s Boyfriends

By A Correspondent- A Bindura man was arraigned before a Bindura Magistrate Samantha Dhlamini facing a robbery case after he allegedly  assaulted, and stole from a man he suspected to be having an affair with his girlfriends.

The magistrate Dlamini remanded Jezenga Mubaira (22) to 17 February 2021 on ZW$1 000 bail.

Prosecutor Edward Katsvairo told the court that on 10 January 2021 at around 1600hrs at Gombamusa village, the accused met the complainant, Rufaro Chinyanga (20) and started accusing him of falling in love with his girlfriends.

Rufaro tried to explain but, in a fit of rage, the accused grabbed him by his t-shirt and started assaulting him with open hands and fists.

The complainant’s hat, which contained US$53 fell down in the process resulting in the money falling too.

The accused then took the complainant’s money and fled from the scene.

Rufaro sustained a swollen face and was not medically examined. Of the robbed money, no amount has been recovered.

“I Never Resigned From Zanu Pf”: Bhasikiti

By A Correspondent- After announcing that he was dumping MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa arguing that his party no longer exists, Kudakwashe Bhasikiti has been accused of trying to trace his footsteps back to the ruling Zanu-PF party but the former Mwenezi East legislator has hit back at his critics saying he never resigned from Zanu-PF.

Bhasikiti was kicked out of Zanu-PF in 2014 on allegations of trying to remove the then President Robert Mugabe from power together with the Gamatox faction led by former vice president Joyce Mujuru.

Bhasikiti told TellZim News that people should understand that he never resigned from Zanu-PF but he did from the MDC Alliance.

“I was not kicked out of the MDC Alliance but I had to quit after realising that I could no longer belong to a party which does not exist. I supported Chamisa but since he no longer has a party, I decided to leave him.

“Now people are attacking my person saying I want to go back to Zanu-PF but I want to tell them that I never resigned from Zanu-PF.

“Everyone likes the old Zanu-PF which believed in the politics of gutsaruzhinji. Unfortunately, the current Zanu-PF has derailed from that principle and if they mend their ways I would support them.

“What I wanted was for MDC Alliance to become ideologically like Zanu-PF during its founding days but they have refused,” said Bhasikiti.

He said he was quitting politics and will focus on agriculture at his farm in Mwenezi where he says he is doing very well in maize seed and mango production.

“I am now doing politics of production. The people need to eat at the end of the day and I have decided to take it upon myself to feed the nation.

“We are now looking beyond politics and we want to utilize the land we were given. I am into maize seed and mango production. Our mangoes are being sold on the local market and we have exported some,” said Bhasikiti.

After the 2017 military coup of 2017 which downed Mugabe, Bhasikiti tried to find his way into Zanu-PF after pleading with the Zanu-PF Masvingo Provincial Coordinating Committee (PCC) for readmission but he was turned down.

CHIN’ONO, SIKHALA PROTEST AGAINST ILL-TREATMENT BY ZPCS AS MAHERE AWAITS DECISION ON CHALLENGE OF LEGALITY OF ARREST

FREELANCE journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and Zengeza West constituency legislator Hon. Job Sikhala have protested against ill-treatment by Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) officers, who are discriminating them against other prisoners by bringing them to court while handcuffed and shackled in leg irons and defying court orders.

Although Harare Magistrate Lazini Ncube had ordered ZPCS officers to transport Chin’ono to and from prison separately from other prisoners to minimise the risk of spreading coronavirus as the freelance journalist is a recent contact of some people who tested positive to coronavirus, the prison guards defied the court order and continued to ferry him together with other inmates.

Chin’ono’s lawyers Harrison Nkomo, Paidamoyo Saurombe and Gift Mtisi of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) told Magistrate Ncube that ZPCS officers were defying a court order issued by Ncube ordering the prison guards not to handcuff or shackle the freelance journalist in leg irons.

Hon. Sikhala’s lawyers Jeremiah Bamu, Nkomo and Saurombe, who appeared before Magistrate Ngoni Nduna, also protested against the ill-treatment of their client, who was brought to court while handcuffed and in leg irons.

The lawyers protested that ZPCS officers were discriminating against Chin’ono and Hon. Sikhala as they were the only ones being shacked while other prisoners including those facing serious offences such as rape were not being subjected to such ill-treatment.

Assistant Commissioner Gapare from ZPCS will appear in court on Friday 15 January 2021 and respond to allegations of ill-treatment raised by Hon. Sikhala.

Chin’ono, whose application for refusal of remand was dismissed on Wednesday 13 January 2021 by Magistrate Ncube, will return to court on Thursday 14 January 2021, where a ruling on his bail application will be handed down.

Hon. Sikhala, who also had his application for refusal of remand dismissed by Magistrate Nduna, will return to court too on Thursday 14 January 2021 for continuation of his bail application before Magistrate Nduna.

Meanwhile, opposition MDC-Alliance party spokesperson Advocate Fadzayi Mahere will return to court on Friday 15 January 2021, where Magistrate Trynos Utahwashe will hand down his ruling on her application challenging the State’s bid to place her on remand on
charges of publishing or communicating false statements prejudicial to the state as defined in section 31(a)(i) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act alternatively section 31(a)(iii) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act.

Advocate Mahere, who is represented by David Drury and Andria Dracos of Honey and Blanckenberg Legal Practitioners and is assisted by Tinashe Chinopfukutwa of ZLHR, was arrested by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) members on Sunday 10 January 2021.

On Tuesday 12 January 2021 when she appeared before Magistrate Utahwashe, she raised several complaints against ZRP members, whom she accused of detaining her in squalid cells at Harare Central Police Station, which are not fit for habitation.

Advocate Mahere told Magistrate Utahwashe that suspects were not being subjected to temperature checks and were not provided with face masks while in detention cells.

The MDC-Alliance party spokesperson disclosed that detained women were not being provided with sanitary ware and there was no toilet paper in the detention cells which were reeking of stale urine.

Magistrate Utahwashe ordered the State to probe the complaints filed by Advocate Mahere and provide him with a report by Friday 15 January 2021.

“Crushing The People’s Voices Is Not The Answer”

ALL HOPE IS NOT LOST

By Leonard Koni- Zimbabwean citizens in all walks of life have been fighting for change at great personal cost including human life. Every move has been countered with brutality and counter violence or by the use if captured courts and state securities.

The leadership today is all after the opposition than improving the people’s welfare.
There is a leadership disaster looming within the country. Our leaders have quickly forgotten what their mandate is. There is a lot of self centredness and leadership deficiencies. #

Instead of fixing the ailing economy and attending to the ravaging #COVID19 pandemic that has caused a number of deaths in our hospitals and communities, the leaders have resorted to arresting whoever tweets about what is happening in the society.
Our government has reduced itself to a social media monitor.

This inept, corrupt, clueless and cruel government continue the overdrive in arresting MDC-Alliance leadership and political activists who interrogates its behaviour. To be precise, they lack the intelligence to govern.

Today we continue to see ugly events of the persecution and harassment of opposition leaders and political activists.

This is actually tarnishing the image of the country and not the opposition. One will start to wonder why the government spent a lot of money paying some American and British public relations companies to spruce up the image of the country and yet destroying it overnight.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has forgotten and must be reminded to go back to his inaugural statement at National Sports Stadium where he told the majority of Zimbabweans that he was different from  Robert Mugabe and that he was doing things the new way. “The voice of the people is the voice of God”, I quote.

Today, we no longer have a sound judiciary, a sound police force, a sound military, a sound intelligence team, a sound speaker of  Parliament. Our courts should be citadels of justice but we see a different scenario.

All these have been eroded and fallen by the way side. The Zanu PF government has defiled and captured all these institutions and we we are left with a void leadership.

Last year we saw the arrest of journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and in 2021 the story continues with the arresting of Job Sikhala again and lately Fadzayi Mahere on spurious charges.

My question is – Will that arrest improve the country’s ailing economy or reduce the spiralling inflation in the country. Are the trio holding back the success of the country?
Its unfortunate that we still have many of blind Bartemeous who think that this government will take us to a promised land.

There is no justice in Zimbabwe as we speak.  What is the rationale of locking people in leg irons in the 21st century as if they have committed gruesome crimes? All hope is not lost. The struggle continues.

98 Covid-19 Positive 0ut 123 Tested: Proof Test Regime Wilfully Inadequate – “Seri Kweguva!” Still, Must Learn Lessons

By Wilbert Mukori- Zimbabwe has handled the corona virus pandemic like it has everything else the characteristic blundering incompetence.

“Masvingo marked a record single-day increase in the number of Covid-19 cases on Tuesday (11 January 2021) as it emerged that the Province is operating with only a single isolation centre for the public,” reported the Masvingo Mirror.

“Health officials confirmed 98 new cases of the novel coronavirus out of 123 tests done on Tuesday. They also confirmed that four people died during the same day.

“The cumulative cases in the province stood at 872 most of which are health officials. The national death toll is 446 as of yesterday.”

Zimbabwe has had very, very low corona virus cases and deaths up to now and we all know why – the country has not been testing anywhere near the level recommended by WHO and common sense would dictate. On many, many occasions Masvingo has reported zero cases and deaths only for one to notice the Province has not carried out even one single test that day.

So there were 123 test and 98 came out positive. Of the 872 cumulative cases in the province we are being told “most of which are health officials”. These facts point to one thing – the Province’s test regime has been wilfully inadequate.

By failing to test diligently many of the people with the virus were missed out and they continue to mix in society spreading the virus. And now the Province is paying dearly for it; the corona virus cases and deaths are soaring.

“Masvingo is operating with Rujeko Clinic as the only working isolation centre for Covid-19 patients, forcing health officials to release most patients home for self-isolation,” continue the Mirror report.

“The province does not have capacity to deal with cases since it lacks ventilators as well as qualified personnel to operate the machines, putting patients at risk of dying,”

The problem of failing to test adequately and keep track of the virus is not only a Masvingo Province problem alone but is one replicated country wide.

Some day, one of these fine days, Zimbabwe must carryout a through, no holds barred, investigation into why Zimbabwe had one of the lowest corona virus tests per capita in the world. And how much this single blunder contributed to the corona virus cases and deaths – many of which were missed from the official record – in the country.

“Seri kweguva hakuna muteuro!” (We cannot bring back the dead!) so goes the Shona adage. Still, if we can learn the lesson why so many people have had to suffer and many have dead when by testing widely the suffering and deaths could have been easily avoided!

Zimbabwe was weak and feeble; socially, economically, politically and which way; at the outbreak of the corona virus and the nation has paid dearly for it. If we are to emerge out of this nightmare at all then we must learn the lessons that landed us in this mess.

Zimbabwe must emerged out of corona virus pandemic a stronger nation than we were before the outbreak!

Pres E.D Engage Your Political Nemesis

By Tinashe Eric Muzamhindo-

Context – In 1999, the then MDC leader and former Prime Minister of Zimbabwe, Dr Morgan Richard Tsvangirai, whilst he was addressing more than 20 000 supporters in Rufaro stadium, called for the removal of the democratically elected Head of State, Robert Mugabe, so they say, and he said in his own words I quote ” What we want to tell Mugabe today, is that please go peacefully, if you don’t want we will remove you violently”.

This was regarded as treason charges, and immediately Tsvangirai flew to South Africa, where he addressed journalists, and called for the later to step down from office. We witnessed a number of episodes, where George Bizos flew in to assist Tsvangirai, after her was charged with treason, death penalty, if found guilty.

Application
Politics was applied, and Tsvangirai was acquitted after a number of Heads of States, diplomats and other strategic people engaged the former Zanu PF leader. Tsvangirai went further to contest more than four elections, losing to Mugabe.

Mutual understanding

In 2008, despite a run-off which saw dozens of opposition members being killed, the then MDC leader, and former Prime Minister of Zimbabwe signed a Global Political Agreement, which gave birth to an inclusive arrangement. Who thought Mugabe would share the same table with Tsvangirai?

Narrative :
1. Forgiveness2. Reconciliation3. Way forward4. Working arrangement

Context

In August 16, 2017, Zambian opposition leader Hakainde Hichilema was dragged before the courts of Law, after being accused of wanting to overthrow a democratically elected Head of State, Edgar Lungu, after his motorcade failed to pave way for the Head of State.

The allegation attracted a death penalty, and he spent more than 90 days in prison. It took former Nigerian President , Obasanjo, Yoweri Museveni, Jacob Zuma, and many others to plead with Lungu to release the main opposition leader.

Application

Hakainde Hichilema was acquitted, and the Judge made it clear that he had terminated the proceedings but their discharge was conditional.

Narrative
1. Edgar Lungu and Hakainde Hichilema met at a church function and greeted each other
2. Lungu paved way for dialogue between his party, and main opposition party
3. Peace and tranquility was restored in the Southern Africa country

What is opposition?
1. A contrast or antithesis
2. Alternative
3. Designated Government
4. Check the excesses of the ruling party

Current Trajectory

We have the leading Journalist and filmmaker Hopewell Chin’ono, St Mary’s Mp , Job Wiwa Sikhala, MDC Alliance national Spokeswoman, Fadzai Mahere, and Mayor of Harare, Advocate Jacob Mafume.

The non of our business concept :

Fun part of it, Jacob Mafume is number 2 in office, if it was in the Western world, Mafume would be moving around in an escort or motorcade. Do you know what number 2 means? Someone regarded with high calling, higher Office, and he is the second in command in Harare, he is the eye of potential investors.

In the best interest

I’m not saying they are not guilty, my simple advice is you can use your Political influence to come up with a strategic plan to waiver this and peace must prevail in our country. The current picture and image of our country is not looking good

Thank You Shumba, thank You Murambwi, and once again thank You Mr President “

My two cents advice :
1. Get rid of toxic politics
2. You have a legacy to protect
3. You need to be remembered for something that is of importance
4. You need a neutral, Strategic Political advisor
5. You need to engage Nelson Chamisa, despite your political differences

6. Bury the hatchet, and bring everyone to the table
7. We have a Political crisis, which must be resolved by all Political leaders
8. You need a sound Development Policy to give a proper direction of our country
9. Those giving you advice won’t be there, when something bad happens, they will throw Spanners on you

10. Exhaust on Strategic engagements with your political opponents
11. Accept constructive criticism
12. Remove bad apples around you
13. Erode bootlickers around you
14. You cabinet is not inspiring.

15. Change within your cabinet is imminent.

16. You have a lot of deadwoods in the current cabinet

17. There must be a proper Economic Recovery framework to address the implications of Covid-19 pandemic
18. Set up a taskforce which is Inclusive of Corporate World, Business Community, church, Researchers, Development Practitioners, academics etc

19. Redirect expenditure towards Critical sectors of the economy

20. You are not being felt on the ground.

Please take note of number 20

21. Those around you or closer to you are feeding you with information you want to hear, and later discard you, make use of this opportunity to creat a LEGACY which will be carried in future generations

FULL TEXT- “No To Demolitions”: MDC Alliance

No to demolitions

The MDC Alliance is strongly opposed to the oncoming houses demolitions in Chitungwiza by the Zanu PF led central government, through the office of the Provincial Development coordinator, (PDC). He has used council officials to carry out such a heinous act in the midst of the rain season and the deadly COVID-19 pandemic. Sadly this has been done without the authority or a resolution of the council. A clear act of interference with the work of the council which is against the spirit and letter of devolution agreed upon by Zimbabweans in chapter 14 and section 274 of the constitution.

We consider this move in the same lenses as we viewed operation Murambatsvina and all the house demolitions inclusive of the most recent ones that happened in Budiriro, Ruwa et al; as inhumane, inconsiderate and evil.

Judging by the constitution of Zimbabwe and the numerous political manifestos in the run up to the last election, it is the government’s duty to provide shelter for Zimbabweans and nevet to destroy it. Citizens pay taxes only for purposes of development and not otherwise.

It is with utmost disgust that the ministry of local government is abusing state institutions and overriding MDC Alliance run councils to impose destruction of people’s homes. Sadly the illegitimate Zanu PF government is abusing the law to victimize all MDC Alliance Mayors and Councillors for standing with the people.

We are aware that land barons are Zanu PF offshoots and people are conscious that the technical wings of councils are controlled by the Zanu PF led central government and these two entities cooperated to fleece citizens of their hard earned money and allowed them to erect housing structures in full glare of the authorities only for them to declare these completely built houses illegal.

Many of our councillors have been arrested for standing with and for the people and is the reason why Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume is unjustifiably imprisoned and the same reasons behing the illegal recalls of our councillors.

We reiterate that the MDC Alliance is a party of the people, by the people, for the people and will always stand by the people in accordance with our social democratic ideology and the Smart Cities Agenda launched in March 2020 at the Smart Councils Festival by the People’s President Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

We stand with the people against housing demolitions.

“Boycott Proton Products”: MP

MDC Alliance legislator for Marondera Central, Caston Matewu, has urged the general populace to boycott Proton Bread after it emerged that more than 40 workers contracted the Coronavirus.

Earlier, we reported that authorities at the company were not taking serious measures to protect workers from the virus.

We present Matewu’s statement below.

BOYCOTT BUYING PROTON PRODUCTS UNTIL THEY SANITIZE THE BAKERY AND GET ALL EMPLOYEES TESTED FOR COVID BUY AT YOUR OWN RISK

*Proton Bakeries* – Do the right thing!!!!

It is disheartening to note that over 40 wokers at Proton Bakeries have contracted Covid 19 and yet the bakery still operates like nothing has happened.

I have been talking to various employees who say that they are still told to come to shifts and do thier jobs despite the spread of the pandemic at the workplace. Worse still most of these workers have not been tested. The senior managers are given risk allowance whilst the rest of the workers suffer. This is an indictment of corporate greed.

When a company puts profits over saving lives then you know there is something fundamentally wrong with their Directors.

Proton must immediately shut down thier plant for a week and allow ALL workers to be tested and disinfect all work stations. I will be promptly writing to the Ministry of Health and the local Provincial Medical Director PMD about the situation at one of our biggest companies.

By allowing Proton Bakeries to remain open they are now the biggest Covid 19 super spreader in our Town. The hundreds of people employed at the bakeries interact with thier families and the rest of the Marondera community therefore they have the propensity to diffuse this disease to the rest of the town.

I humbly plead with Proton Bakeries to do the right thing before the residents take it upon themselves to act.

Stay safe Covid kills

Bobi Wine Reveals How M7 Is Sponsored By The West | FULL TEXT

Bobi Wine

By Bobi Wine | A mob of violent thugs, incited by an authoritarian president, storm a democratic legislature and disrupt controversial constitutional proceedings. The invaders damage property, injure lawmakers, and drag many opposition legislators from the chamber.

No, I am not describing the assault on the United States Capitol last week; rather, I refer to the one the Ugandan strongman Yoweri Museveni orchestrated in 2017 on the Parliament in which I serve. The previous year, Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, claimed to have won a fifth presidential term in an election that international observers said fell far short of international democratic standards. Seemingly bent on remaining president for life, Museveni then initiated a campaign to alter a clause in Uganda’s constitution that required presidential candidates to be under the age of 75. That clause would have prevented Museveni, now 76, from contesting the 2021 presidential election, which is scheduled to take place on Thursday.

Appalled by Museveni’s antidemocratic charade, I joined an opposition campaign to stop the constitution from being altered. Museveni’s response was to deploy plainclothes special forces to Parliament to shut down our endeavor. The special forces, which operate as Museveni’s private army, proceeded to batter opposition lawmakers and drag us by force from the floor. I was injured along with many other members of Parliament, including Betty Nambooze and Francis Zaake, who were singled out for abuse and had to be flown abroad for emergency medical care. Nambooze’s injuries have left her with permanent disabilities.

In the week following the raid on Parliament, assailants threw a grenade at my home that struck my 12-year-old son’s bedroom window. The homes of other critics of the regime were attacked as well. In the face of such violence and intimidation, our legislative effort disintegrated: Museveni’s constitutional amendment passed quietly in December 2017, enabling him to run in Thursday’s election and in all elections thereafter.

AMERICA’S BRUTAL DARLING

Uganda’s 2021 presidential election is shaping up to be as unfree and unfair as ever. As one of ten opposition candidates challenging Museveni, I have faced a relentless barrage of violence. Security forces have detained me on multiple occasions and brutalized my supporters. In mid-November, while I was being held behind bars on unspecified charges, my supporters took to the streets in protest. Security forces responded by murdering 54 demonstrators and bystanders, including at least one child.

Last week, my team and I submitted an official complaint to the International Criminal Court detailing the Museveni regime’s illegal detention and torture of my colleagues and me, as well as the often lethal violence it has meted out against our supporters and other unarmed civilians. During a press conference to announce our complaint that was livestreamed on the Internet, Ugandan security officers surrounded my vehicle, yanked me out of it against my will, and roughed me up. I was eventually allowed back into the vehicle, but officers then drove alongside my team and me, launching tear gas and pepper spray at us even as stunned reporters watched over Zoom. If Museveni’s forces are brazen enough to commit such barbaric acts while the world is looking on, consider what they must be willing to inflict on less well-known Ugandans every day.

It pains me to say this, but the international community is part of our enduring problem in Uganda. Over the years, Museveni has managed to position himself as a military ally and development darling of many Western governments that look the other way when it comes to his horrendous human rights record. During the 1990s, the Museveni regime funneled weapons to rebels in Sudan on behalf of the administration of President Bill Clinton; today, Ugandan forces fight in the U.S.- and European-supported African Union Mission in Somalia and serve as guards under U.S. command in Iraq. Museveni also embraced neoliberal economic reforms that have been hard on the poor but endeared him to institutions such as the World Bank.

Uganda’s 2021 presidential election is shaping up to be as unfree and unfair as ever.

In nearly 35 years in power, Museveni’s government has received tens of billions of dollars in direct foreign aid from Western countries, including the United States and multilateral institutions such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. Much of this money has been properly spent on projects such as AIDS treatment and malaria prevention, but much has also been siphoned off by Museveni’s henchmen. And as multiple researchers have documented, billions of dollars in taxpayer and development funds have been diverted to the security forces—the same forces that attack me, my colleagues, and our fellow citizens with impunity. As a result, Uganda’s military budget has steadily swollen over the years. It ballooned from $24 million in 1992 to nearly $400 million in 2020, even as poverty deepened, social services atrophied, and basic human rights and good-governance benchmarks went unmet.

By partnering with the United States to fight terrorism, in particular in Somalia, Museveni has positioned his regime as a guarantor of stability in East Africa. He has also won international praise for welcoming refugees from war-torn countries—even though many of them are victims of conflicts that Museveni himself stoked. But just as often as Ugandan forces have trained their sights on terrorists abroad, they have trained them on Ugandan citizens at home.

In the late 1980s, in northern Uganda, for instance, Museveni’s forces undertook what the political scientist Adam Branch, director of the Centre of African Studies at Cambridge University, has called “a counterinsurgency without an insurgency.” This operation, ostensibly aimed at the remnants of the armies of previous regimes, was in fact ethnically motivated and unleashed such staggering violence upon local civilians that it provoked real insurgencies—including the murderous Lord’s Resistance Army of Joseph Kony, which tortured, kidnapped, and killed tens of thousands of Ugandans, many of them children, over the next two decades. Throughout the 1990s and the first decade of the twenty-first century, Museveni not only arguably prolonged the conflict with the LRA for his own ends but cynically used the violence to justify repurposing foreign development aid for military aims.

The international community is part of our enduring problem in Uganda.

Ugandans who have sought to peacefully oppose Museveni’s abuses have also been met with state terror. In 2011, for instance, security forces opened fire on demonstrators who had taken to the streets to protest government corruption and economic mismanagement, killing at least nine people. Then, in 2016, the Ugandan army slaughtered 150 unarmed people, including at least 15 children, in a western region of the country where relations with the central government were tense. In 2018, security forces assassinated my driver and arrested me and four of my parliamentary colleagues, as well as dozens of our supporters, holding us for days without access to counsel or even to our families. When we were finally taken to court, many of us—including me—were on crutches.

Despite these horrendous crimes against Ugandan citizens, international funds have continued to flow to Museveni’s government. Just this past June, the World Bank released $300 million in relief funds, ostensibly meant to combat COVID-19, which then promptly vanished into a classified military budget that is now being used to repress me and my colleagues who are demanding a free and fair election.

A PIVOTAL MOMENT

As part of Museveni’s cynical strategy to retain power, he is now trying to paint our movement as violent and sponsored by nefarious “foreign actors.” On December 30, I was arrested along with 100 of my aides as we prepared to campaign on an island in Lake Victoria called Kalangala. Forty-nine of these aides have been falsely charged with illegal possession of ammunition and firearms. I have been speaking out against electoral violence since even before my political career began. And throughout my campaign, I have maintained unequivocally that ours is a nonviolent struggle for democratic change and must be a peaceful revolution. The charges of violence by my staff members are merely a pretext for Museveni and his enablers—in Uganda and in the West—to justify their suppression of our long-denied democratic aspirations.

Thankfully, U.S. policy toward Uganda may be shifting. The House Foreign Affairs Committee recently called on President Donald Trump’s administration to impose sanctions on five current and former heads of Ugandan security agencies for human rights abuses, including extrajudicial killings and torture. What is more, the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, led by then ranking member Senator Robert Menendez, a Democrat from New Jersey, condemned my arrest last month and demanded a free and fair election. Menendez also called for greater scrutiny of U.S. support for Museveni in the event that Thursday’s election is rigged.

In recent weeks, Americans have for the first time in their lives faced the specter of a violent transition between presidential administrations. Ugandans have never experienced a peaceful transition of power. In fact, with Museveni’s regime approaching 35 years of age, the vast majority of Ugandans have never witnessed any transition of power at all.

This week is a pivotal one for my country. Millions of young people demanding reform and a say in their future are pitted against a small cadre of tyrants committed to retaining power at all costs. My sincere hope is that the international community will watch this week’s elections in Uganda closely. International attention matters now more than ever. Indeed, it is what has kept me and my colleagues alive up to this point. If Museveni steals another election on Thursday, we hope that good people of conscience around the world will hold him and this regime accountable.

ZRP Abandons Search For Swept Away Bodies

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has abandoned the search for the bodies of four passengers still missing after an Isuzu double cab was swept off the low-level Gweru River Bridge on Sunday.

The vehicle and two bodies – the driver and a passenger – were pulled out of the river by the police sub-aqua unit and members of the Gweru Fire Brigade earlier this week.

The driver has since been identified as Tinashe Chiwawa, who was employed by Gweru City Council in the engineering department.

Chiwawa was buried yesterday in Gweru while the body of the passenger is still to be identified.

The vehicle was towing a mining compressor when it was swept off the bridge.

Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko yesterday told State media that an eyewitness told the police that he saw six people including the driver in the vehicle.

The eyewitness further claimed that three men got out to assess the bridge and one passenger said they carry on as the water was not deeper than the day before.

Solskjaer Ready To Face Liverpool

LONDON. — Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is relishing Sunday’s showdown with Liverpool and insists his players are ready for “a great test” after Manchester United claimed top spot in the English Premier League football table.

Paul Pogba’s deflected second-half volley secured a 1-0 victory over Burnley at Turf Moor on Tuesday night that saw United open up a three-point cushion over the champions ahead of their clash on Super Sunday.

The victory also extended United’s unbeaten away run in the league to 15 games and means they sit top of the pile after 17 games for the first time since their last title-winning campaign under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2012/13.

“It’s a brilliant position to be in,” Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “Of course we know we’re going to the champions who have had an unbelievable three-and-a-half-seasons, we know it’s going to be a difficult game for us, but we are ready for it.

“We couldn’t have asked for a better time to play them because we are in good shape, good form and hungry, which is a good thing because these boys want to get better and that’s the test of their character and quality.”

In his post-match press conference, Solskjaer added: “We’re looking forward to it. Of course, we enjoy being where we are (at the top of the league) at any time, be that the first game or the last game, which is a big, big difference.

“We’re looking forward to it, it’s a great test of where we’re at against a good team. We’re almost halfway through the season so it’s a little bit of an indication of where you’re at, but no one will remember the league table on January 12.”

United’s latest victory on the road featured a number of contentious VAR decisions, with Robbie Brady and Luke Shaw both escaping more severe punishment for challenges at either end of the field in the same passage of play before Harry Maguire saw his first-half opener controversially disallowed.-The Herald

Heavy Rains Predicted

THE Civil Protection Unit (CPU) is on standby for evacuations in flood prone areas of the country after the Meteorological Service Department (MSD) warned that tropical cyclones and serious floods remain a real danger in the second half of the 2020/21 rainy season.

The weather forecaster predicted extremely heavy rains exceeding 30 millimetres (mm) in 24 hours to sweep across most parts of the country this week.

“Heavy storms, flash floods, flooding and tropical cyclones cannot be ruled out as the season progresses,” read an MSD statement yesterday.

Already, some dams in the country are spilling and rain continues to fall in abundance in a rainy season expected to end in March.

The ground is already supersaturated with water in most areas, so all rain water immediately becomes run-off and increases the chances of dangerous flash flooding countrywide.

The MSD had predicted normal to above normal rainfall in the 2020/21 rainy season owing to the La Nina climate pattern in Pacific Ocean, with improved rains expected across the Sadc region.

The weather forecaster said the country has recorded more than 300mm of rains so far across most parts the country, pointing to significant rainfall.

Normally from October to December the country receives subdued rainfall compared to the January to March second-half of the rainy season.- Chronicle

Zimbabwe National Editor’s Forum Statement On Hopewell Chin’ono’s Arrest

Hopewell Chin’ono

ON 8 January 2021, Zimbabwean police arrested award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono at his home in Harare for allegedly publishing a falsehood or communicating false information which is prejudicial to the state.

After that police also arrested opposition leaders Job Sikhala and Fadzayi Mahere on the same charges.

This emanated from a widely circulated video on social media in which a police officer is seen quarrelling amid pushing and shoving with a group of people accusing him of striking and killing a baby with a baton.

The mother of the baby is also seen grabbing the policeman, with people saying the police officer had killed the child.

However, police say they later investigated and found out that the scuffle had indeed happened after the police officer had shattered a windscreen of a Kombi with the baton, resulting in the baby being hit by debris, but eventually the child did not die as initially feared by the mother and the crowd, and as later widely circulated by Chin’ono and others.

As a result, Chin’ono was arrested and is being charged under Section 31 (a)(iii) of the Criminal (Codification and Reform) Act. This part of the law has since been repealed; it no longer exists.

A Constitutional Court judgment exists in the case of Constantine Chimakure and others (CCZ6 of 2014), ruling that the offence Chin’ono is currently facing is non-existent as it was struck off in 2014 as unconstitutional anyway.

This clearly means Chin’ono’s arrest is arbitrary and has no foundation at law.
Constitutionally and legally, he cannot be convicted on a law that does not exist and on something which is not an offence at law.

This means the police’s case against Chin’ono has no legal basis at all, not just because the law was repealed as it was unconstitutional, but also because the state – as the Constitutional Court ruled – cannot appoint itself and arrogate itself powers of being a monitor of truth.

That is not the function of the state. A state cannot and should not behave like an unruly class monitor – or bully-harassing journalists and citizens, prescribing to them what is true out there and what is not.

While freedom of expression and media freedom are not absolute – in other words they have limits – those fetters are clearly defined and articulated in the constitution and the law.

The grounds upon which freedom of expression and media freedom are legally restricted are spelt out clearly and unambiguously in the constitution.

This is because freedom of expression and media freedom are fundamental and critical, hence entrenched rights, and a cornerstone to the building of a free and democratic society, which Zimbabwe aspires to be.

Strong constitutional protection of freedom of expression and press freedom cannot tolerate the imposition of self-censorship on free speech and press through fear of arrests or lengthy sentences of imprisonment for offences of publishing or communicating false news, as the court ruled.

In 2000 the UN Special Rapporteur commented on false news arrests and issues saying: “In the case of offences such as publishing or broadcasting ‘false’ or ‘alarmist’ information, arrests and prison terms are both reprehensible and out of proportion to the harm suffered by the victim.” This is simply because a free press is the lifeblood of any democracy.

Journalists, of course, must always verify their stories first – in other words, uphold the ethics, values and principles of the profession- and check information before publishing, but this cannot be a pretext for police to arrest journalists arbitrarily and outside the law.

Journalism is basically a science of verification, yet arbitrary arrests are not the solution if and when journalists fail in their responsibilities and duties.

We urge law enforcement agents to do their job professionally and within the limits of the law, not to act arbitrarily, in as much as we urge journalists to be professional.

By arresting Chin’ono and other journalists arbitrarily, the Zimbabwean state will be contravening not just its own constitution, but also the African Charter for Human Rights, in particular Article 6 and Article 14, which Zimbabwe signed and ratified.

This means SADC and the African Union should always speak out against such violations of freedom of expression and press freedom.

We, therefore, note with dismay SADC and the AU’s silence at this gross violation of freedom of expression, press freedom and indeed human rights.

We further note that this is not the first time this has happened in Zimbabwe. Journalists have routinely been arrested and intimidated in Zimbabwe – for years.

It is not the first time Chin’ono himself has been arrested. It’s the third time in as many months.

By arresting and harassing journalists, the government is not only inflicting pain on the media practitioner concerned and sending a chilling effect across the media landscape but also damaging its own image irreparably in the process.

There is nothing to be achieved and gained by arresting journalists and indeed citizens in general, except damaging government’s reputation and making Zimbabwe appear like an authoritarian, rogue state.

Together, we can make Zimbabwe a safe place for journalists to work in and a better nation for all to live in.

Zimbabwe Warriors Ready For CHAN…

THE Warriors technical team is putting up a brave face after going through a rough patch in the run-up to the African Nations Championships (Chan) tournament which kicks off on Saturday.

Zimbabwe is set to leave the country for Cameroon tomorrow ahead of their tournament curtain raiser.

Team manager Wellington Mupandare says despite their shoddy preparations, mostly because of a COVID-19 outbreak in camp, the Warriors are not going to the biannual tournament to make up numbers, but to compete.

Chan is a tournament reserved for players that play in their respective domestic leagues.

Warriors have had the worst preparations for this edition with the team having barely trained together due to various reasons.

Some of their opponents have been playing preparatory matches over the last couple of weeks.

“We are living in unusual times and we have to adjust to the situation,” Mupandare said.

“This is the situation that we are in and we won’t mourn about it because every team has its own different challenges. If anything, the boys are even more determined to defy the odds. We have set ourselves our target as a team and we will try to achieve that.”

Coach Zdravko Logarušić has previously said the team is targeting reaching the quarter-finals of the tournament.

The Croat has overseen chaotic preparations for the tournament, with the team’s participation at one time having looked in doubt.

Their participation was only confirmed on Saturday after they were given the greenlight to train by the government.

Logarušić was forced to select players who have not played competitive football for over a year after last season’s local league campaign was scrapped off due to COVID-19.

As this was not bad enough, the team’s training had to be suspended after the camp was hit by the deadly virus which saw 10 players and five officials returning positive results.

The whole squad was forced into quarantine a fortnight ago and only resumed training on Saturday after retests saw the players drawing negative results.

Fourteen members have recovered from the virus while one player is still down and in isolation.

Mupandare said players who were injured — King Nadolo, Richard Hachiro and Leeroy Mavunga — prior to the forced break had since recovered.

“The recovery of the previously injured players is one of the positives that we have to take from the break. The three players have had time to recover from their injuries and are all back to training. We don’t have any injury worries at the moment,” he said.

The only blot in the camp so far, Mupandare said, was the one positive case.

The team will undergo a final COVID-19 test today ahead of their departure for Yaoundé tomorrow.

Drawn in Group A, the Warriors will also play Burkina Faso and Mali with the top two teams qualifying for the quarter-finals of the tournament.

But having lost so much time, the Warriors are hoping to make the most out of the remaining time, while also imposing stricter conditions to protect the team from new infections.

“Zifa would like to assure the public that we will adhere to Caf, Fifa and SRC [Sports and Recreation Commission] medical protocols before, during and after the tournament in order to mitigate the spread of the virus,” Zifa said in a statement on Saturday.

“We are confident that every member of the team will be motivated by these new progressive developments to be victorious on the pitch.”-NewsDay

Pandemonium As Cheetahs Are Spotted In Beitbridge

By A Correspondent- There was panic in the Goda area in Beitbridge’s Ward 5 when some villagers mistook two cheetahs for lions.

Since 7am, most villagers in the area located some 26 km along the Beitbridge-Masvingo highway had stopped all farming activities and locked children in their houses.

The news about lions being spotted in the area spread like veld fire.

Scores of villages gathered in one of the maize fields to have a glimpse of the supposed wild cats.

The nerves where only calmed when Zimbabwe National Parks rangers arrived around 10am.

“We have done our investigations. These are cheetahs which have been killing goats and sheep in most villages in Beitbridge East,“ said the Wildlife officer in charge of Beitbridge Mr Bonizi Manuwere as he addressed the villagers.

He said they had called back up from their counterparts from Bubye Valley Conservancy (BVC) to sedate the cats.

However, they managed to capture one of the cheetahs while the other escaped towards Three Way Safaris.

According to Mr Manuwere, the officials have been receiving a lot of reports on problem animals from rural communities around the district.

He said the two cheetahs had so far killed 13 goats and four sheep in Beitbridge East since the beginning of this month.

“We encourage people to report any problem animals to our offices so that we may assist them professionally,” said Mr Manuwere.

One of the villagers, Miss Agness Sibata said she nearly passed out when she saw the two animals while strapping her baby on the back.

“We were going to the family field when we saw these animals. Although we had no clear view we assumed they were lions.

I was in the company of two other minor children aged six years and carrying my baby on the back who is 18 months old,” she said.

The woman said she then informed some village elders who then called the Civil Protection Unit.

Mr Manatsa Kwinika said they were only calmed by the arrival of the Zimparks authorities on the ground.

“We have heard many stories about lions straying from nearby conservancies and when we heard about the strange animals we tracked the spoor and assumed they were baby lions,” said Mr Kwinika.

He said they were worried the animals could attack people in their homes.

He added that the villagers had gathered at the scene to closely monitor the predators while awaiting help from authorities.

Mahuhushe area’s acting village head , Ms Fortune Sibanda said they had sent word to all homesteads for parents to lock their kids in their homes and to be vigilant until the wild animals had been captured.

“We sent alert messages around the communities in this area through the local District Rapid Response committee.

“We are glad we got a swift response from the national parks authorities,” she said.

Hyenas, lions, buffaloes and elephants have become a perennial head ache for most villagers living in rural Beitbridge.

The worst affected are those living closer to national parks and safaris in both Zimbabwe and South Africa.-statemedia

Woman Douses Ex- Boyfriend With Petrol Over Peace Order

By A Correspondent- A 43 year old Mashonaland East man is battling for life at Marondera Provincial Hospital after petrol was poured on him before being set ablaze by his ex-girlfriend following a misunderstanding over the contents of a peace order.

Paddington Chinyoka of Chibanda village sustained serious burns and is in a critical condition while his ex-girlfriend Margaret Muranduri (29) was arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza yesterday confirmed the incident and urged the public to desist from violence.

“Violence is unacceptable and never should it be used as a tool to settle disputes. People should learn to find amicable ways to solve any misunderstandings,” he said.

On December 29, Muranduri reportedly called Chinyoka to come to her place and collect a copy of a peace order. Upon arrival, at around 11pm, Chinyoka allegedly turned violent accusing his ex-girlfriend of being harsh towards him because of seeking a peace order against him.

He allegedly threatened to burn the accused person using a gas cylinder which was in her room. The two reportedly fought after the complainant attempted to open the gas cylinder with the intention to burn the accused person.

During the scuffle, the accused person allegedly picked up a container with petrol, splashed the contents on Chinyoka and set the complainant on fire. Chinyoka was rescued by a neighbour who put out the fire before rushing him to Marondera Provincial Hospital. The matter was reported to police, leading to Muranduri’s arrest.

Body Parts Discovered Along Mutirikwi River

By A Correspondent- Four Chiredzi villagers, including a woman and her 11-month-old daughter, who were swept away last Thursday while crossing a flooded Mutirikwi River are still missing amid fears they were devoured by crocodiles.

Mutirikwi is ranked among crocodile-infested rivers in the Lowveld.

A search and rescue team combing the river in search of Kundai Chikwava (18), her daughter Shantell Hungwe and the Gambinya sisters — Tryphine (14) and Tamuka (7) — has failed to find the bodies, but some human body parts, including thighs and ribs, have been recovered and identified as the remains of Tryphine Gambinya.

The Chiredzi Civil Protection Unit (CPU) handed over the recovered body parts to Tryphine’s relatives and they interred them at her parents’ homestead in Village 8, Chiredzi North.

CPU Chiredzi chair and district development coordinator Mr Lovemore Chisema said besides these body parts, nothing else had been found in the search that has so far extended 7km along the Mutirikwi River and its banks.

“We have been doing an intensive search for the missing four persons who were swept away in Mutirikwi River and save for some human remains that were matched to Tryphine Gambinya, nothing was recovered by the search team that comprised the police and villagers,” said Mr Chisema.

“The search operation has been going on since Friday and we have since informed the national CPU about our progress to date after covering 7km along the river and there is unanimity that we have done our best.”

Mr Chisema said while the search had not yet been officially terminated, indications were that the missing persons would not be found and on the evidence of the recovered remains have probably been eated by crocodiles.

“We will still continue to undertake some isolated searches for the missing persons but we suspect that their remains might have been eaten by crocodiles because the river is heavily infested with the reptiles.”

Besides crocodiles, Mr Chisema said the search effort was also being hampered by the river’s width, and the extreme braiding of the water channels, making the search more complicated and cumbersome.

He paid tribute to villagers for joining the search party while reserving special tribute to companies such as Tongaat Hulett Zimbabwe for lending a hand.

The four were swept away on Thursday morning after water levels in Mutirikwi River started rising rapidly while they were trying to cross from Ward 28 in Chiredzi West to Ward 16 in Chiredzi North constituency.

Four others Sarah Mhloro (33) of Village 8 in Marapira and her three other children Tracy (15), Belinda (12) and Talent (3) Gambinya were rescued by an Air Force of Zimbabwe helicopter from an island where they were marooned on Friday afternoon.

Mhloro, who is also mother to Tryphine and Tamuka, spent more than 24 hours stuck on the island while waiting for help.

River levels rose rapidly when a weir along Mutirikwi filled and spilled following heavy rains, allowing the full flow of the river to flow downstream. That saw four people swept away while Ms Mhloro and her children were marooned.

The same AFZ helicopter airlifted three Chivi villagers from the Shindi area where they had been marooned on a huge rock along the Runde River.

Every year, several villagers lose their lives in the Lowveld while crossing fast flowing and rising rivers. Authorities and experts have begged people not to take a chance when rivers rise in flood, and find an alternative route or wait on the bank for flood waters to subside.

Byo Woman Sobs After Paternity Test Results Are Produced In Court

By A Correspondent- A Bulawayo woman was exposed as a paternity cheat after results of a DNA test showed that her child was not fathered by the man who she claimed was her daughter’s dad.

The bombshell came to light when Nkosilathi Ndlovu, a lecturer at Gwanda State University, who was disputing having a love-child with his ex-lover, Breater Gertrude Tayengwa Muvirimi, went for paternity tests at the National University of Science and Technology (Nust) Applied Genetics Testing Centre.

The Nust DNA lab has been operational since 2015 and it previously said 70 percent of paternity tests conducted at the lab had exposed some women as cheats.

Muvirimi from Entumbane suburb was demanding $6 680 from Ndlovu as monthly upkeep for her one-year and 11 months old daughter.

“In terms of the Maintenance Act (Chapter 5:09) I’m seeking to claim maintenance from the respondent Nkosilathi Ndlovu. I’m applying for maintenance in the sum of $6 680 for a child aged one-year and 11 months. I need money for rent, clothing and food. He is the father of the child and is legally liable to maintain as he is employed as a lecturer at Gwanda State University and earns $40 000 per month,” said Muvirimi.

Muvirimi claimed she was unable to cope with the financial demands associated with looking after the child since she was not employed.

“I am not working and I do part time jobs and getting 100 rand per day,” she claimed.
In response Ndlovu dismissed Muvirimi’s application saying he was not legally liable to maintain the child who was not his.

“We did DNA tests and I discovered that the child was not biologically mine,” said Ndlovu while tendering the DNA results.

The results read in part: “The alleged father Mr Nkosilathi Ndlovu is excluded as the biological father of the child.

“The conclusion is based on the non-matching alleles observed at the loci listed above with likelihood ration equal to zero. The alleged father lacks the genetic markers that must be contributed to the child by the biological father. The probability of paternity is 0%”.

Muvirimi however, disputed the results saying she was not present when they were released.

“I was not there when the results were out, so I don’t think they were done properly. I was surprised when police served me with the copy of the DNA results,” she sobbed.

In her ruling presiding magistrate Nomsa Ncube dismissed her claims saying the respondent has produced a paternity test result which showed that the probability of his paternity was zero percent.

Meanwhile, this claim around paternity discrepancy/fraud is not a new one in Zimbabwe. It has been reported before that more than 70 percent of Zimbabwean men may be taking care of children who are not theirs as cases of paternity fraud continue to soar in the country where mothers deliberately misidentify the biological father of the child.-statemedia

Demolition Of Houses Heartless -MDC Alliance

The MDC Alliance is strongly opposed to the oncoming houses demolitions in Chitungwiza by the ZanuPf led central government, through the office of the Provincial development coordinator, (PDC).

He has used council officials to carry out such a heinous act in the midst of the rains and the deadly pandemic, this has been done without the authority or a resolution of the council. This is a clear act of interference with the work of the council which is against the spirit and letter of devolution agreed upon by Zimbabweans in chapter 14 and section 274 of the constitution.

We consider this move in the same lenses as we viewed operation Murambatsvina and all the houses demolitions inclusive of the most recent ones that happened in Budiriro, Ruwa et al; they are inhumane, inconsiderate and evil.

Judging by the constitution of Zimbabwe and the numerous political manifestos in the run up to the last election, it is the government’s duty to construct shelter for the Zimbabweans and not to destroy it ,for citizens pay taxes to government for purposes of development and not degeneration.

It is with utmost disgust that the ministry of local government is abusing state institutions and overriding MDC Alliance run councils to impose destruction instead of construction of homes. As if it is not enough, the illegitimate ZanuPf government is deploying lawfare to victimize all MDC Alliance mayors and councillors who are opposed to houses demolitions.

We are very much aware that land barons belong to ZanuPf, the people are very much conscious that the technical wings of councils are controlled by the ZanuPf led central government and these two entities cooperated to fleece citizens of their hard earned monies and allowed them to erect housing structures in the full glare of the authorities only for them to declare completely built houses illegal and be demolished.

Many of our councillors have been arrested for standing with and for the people and that is the reason why Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume is unjustifiably imprisoned, that is why our councillors are being illegally recalled and arrested on trumped up charges.

We would like to reiterate that the MDC Alliance is a party of the people, by the people, for the people and will always stand by the people in accordance with our social democratic ideology and the Smart Cities Agenda launched in March 2020 at the Smart Councils Festival by the People’s President morning Advocate Nelson Chamisa.

We stand with the people against housing demolitions.

How Central Government Is Thwarting Development In Local Councils

The politics and provision of service delivery in any local authority cannot be understood without understanding the dynamics of political infighting and resultant implications for municipal service delivery.

More often than not, internal fights within organizations tends to affect not only the day to day running of municipalities and councils but also the citizens as well.

Reflecting on recent trends and developments in most councils points out that internal fights for senior positions within the same organizations have resulted in serious sabotages compromising on service delivery. And as such, most challenges by local authorities mirror the larger political crises within the organizations.

There is rampant infighting between senior management and councilors in most local authorities, and ironically citizens suffer in the process. The battles for supremacy do not only pose temporary crises like water shortages, uncollected garbage, or dilapidated infrastructure, it goes beyond that. There is severe sabotage which if not controlled will turn town and cities into squatter camps as a large percentage of the local communities will not receive rudimentary services and for most residents, the most basic of service delivery; getting a water supply or refuse collected that piles up on the streets are a distant dream, and this is a matter of concern and has contributed to the dysfunctionality of local authorities.

The key question tends to focus on political will by the Chief Executive Officers, who to a large extent drives the administration and are an integral part of local authorities. However, if councils and municipalities are at best poorly managed, often by people who are accountable to their political principals, personal vendettas rather than the core mandates of the councils and municipalities as well as residents who are at the receiving end of poor service delivery.

Depleted Kaizer Chiefs Face Usuthu

Depleted Kaizer Chiefs in Usuthu test
Injury-hit, struggling and out of sorts Kaizer Chiefs face a tricky test in their bid to end a lengthy winless run when they travel to Durban for a date with Benni McCarthy’s AmaZulu this afternoon.

Gavin Hunt’s men have had one of their worst starts to a league campaign in recent memory, having won only one of their nine outings in the 2020/21 campaign and are currently languishing in the drop zone.

Their misery was compounded by a 0-2 defeat to Maritzburg United last week, which was a bitter pill to swallow as it was orchestrated by their former coach Ernst Middendorp, who they sacked last season.

They are without Zimbabwean winger Khama Billiat, who is out for two months due to an injury suffered in the defeat to the Team of Choice, which came courtesy of usual nemesis Judas Moseamedi’s brace.

Usuthu on the other hand, have avoided defeat in their last two games, the last one being a 1-1 draw with Bloemfontein Celtic.-Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Darikwa Speaks On Move To Wigan Athletic

Tendayi Darikwa says he is ready to take it to the field again following his move to English League One side Wigan.

Darikwa signed a six-month loan deal from Nottingham Forest where he failed to get minutes since recovering from a knee injury.

His only involvement in competitive games in the past eight months was in the Warriors’ back-to-back matches against Algeria.

Speaking on Latics TV after completing the move, the defender said: “I’ve not played too much football in the last 18 months after a bad injury. But I’m fit again and I can’t wait to get on the pitch and start playing competitive games again.

“I hope to help the team as quickly as possible. I’ve looked at the league table, of course we are in a tough position at the moment in the league.

“I think we have enough quality to get out of it. I want to come in and help the lads and hopefully move up the league.”

Wigan is currently sitting in the 23rd position with 19 points from twenty games.-Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Health Alert : What Should I Do If I Have Covid-19 Symptoms?

The most common symptoms of Covid-19 are: fever, dry cough and fatigue.

Other symptoms that are less common and may affect some patients include: loss of taste or smell; nasal congestion; conjunctivitis (also known as red eyes); sore throat; headache; muscle or joint pain; different types of skin rash; nausea or vomiting; diarrhoea; chills or dizziness. Symptoms of severe Covid-19 disease include: shortness of breath; loss of appetite; confusion; persistent pain or pressure in the chest; and high temperature (above 38 °C). More severe and rare neurological complications such as strokes, brain inflammation, delirium and nerve damage.

People of all ages who experience fever and/or cough associated with difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, or loss of speech or movement should seek medical care immediately.

If possible, call your health care provider, hotline (in Zimbabwe the number is 2019) or health facility first, so you can be directed to the right clinic.

What should I do if I have Covid-19 symptoms?

If you have any symptoms suggestive of Covid-19, call your health care provider or Covid-19 hotline for instructions and find out when and where to get a test, stay at home for 14 days away from others and monitor your health. If you have shortness of breath or pain or pressure in the chest, seek medical attention at a health facility immediately.

Call your health care provider or hotline in advance for direction to the right health facility. If you live in an area with malaria or dengue fever, seek medical care if you have a fever. If local guidance recommends visiting a medical centre for testing, assessment or isolation, wear a medical mask while travelling to and from the facility and during medical care.

Also keep at least a one-metre distance from other people and avoid touching surfaces with your hands.

This applies to adults and children.

Are antibiotics effective in preventing or treating Covid-19?

Antibiotics do not work against viruses; they only work on bacterial infections. Covid-19 is caused by a virus, so antibiotics do not work. Antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment of Covid-19. In hospitals, physicians will sometimes use antibiotics to prevent or treat secondary bacterial infections which can be a complication of Covid-19 in severely ill patients. They should only be used as directed by a physician to treat a bacterial infection.

Precautionary measures

Stay safe by taking some simple precautions, such as physical distancing, wearing a mask, especially when distancing cannot be maintained, keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding crowds and close contact, regularly cleaning your hands, and coughing into a bent elbow or tissue — www.who.int

Revealed: Mnangagwa’s “Doomed” Regime Desperate To Silence Opposition Voices During Lockdown

Tinashe Sambiri|MDC MDC Alliance vice president, Hon Tendai Biti has condemned the coordinated persecution of party members and perceived Zanu PF foes.

The persecution of perceived Zanu PF opponents is a reflection of desperate measures, according to Hon Biti.

Hon Biti also accused Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa’s cornered regime of taking advantage of the lockdown to torment political rivals.

“It’s a sign of the times when a regime turns into a mass business the sorry exercise of human rights abuse .
The ongoing prosecution and persecution of Fadzai , Hopewell, Allan , Jacob and Job are desperate calculated actions of a doomed regime- hakuna Nyika yakadai,” said Hon Biti.

Corruption Dogs Gokwe North District Hospital

Some officials at Gokwe North District Hospital (GNDH) are in the habit of extorting large sums of cash from the patients who require their services.

Investigations indicated that corruption is mainly in GNDH’s rehab department which caters for physiotherapy.

The department which is manned by three rehab technicians, namely Simende, Mutede and Josephine reports directly to the district medical officer (DMO), Mr Chikara.

Our sources said, “this is where all the extortion takes place.”

Sources told Pindula News that at GNDH’s pharmacy rehab, sundries including Plaster of Paris (POP) and crepe bandages are always out of stock creating a conducive environment for extortion.

The source added:

For an adult patient with a fracture of lower limbs, it should cost them anything less than USD15 and for upper limbs, it should cost them less than USD10. Upper limbs should cost them less than USD10 while a fracture of upper or lower limbs should cost them anything less than USD10 for children.

Surprisingly, the rehab staff are charging adult patients more than USD40. For children, they are demanding more than USD30 and are pocketing the money.

The source said these underhand dealings have been going on for a long time now adding that the DMO, as well as others in positions of authority, were aware of the rot but were “silenced by the brown bottle.”

We got in touch with, Mr Emmanuel Mate of Nzungucherwa, Gokwe Nembudziya, one of the victims of the corruption at the health institution and he confirmed the allegations.

Mate said he went to GNDH on the 5th of Oct with a knee injury, had an Xray which revealed that he had a fractured knee.

He said Mr Mutede, whom he was dealing with said the patient needed a plaster and since his leg was swollen, a half plaster was the most appropriate.

Mate said:

They charged me USD20 for the plaster and sent me home saying I should come back 2 weeks later for review.

Two weeks later, I went back and they demanded another USD20 for the full plaster. The total was USD40, excluding costs for bandages and other small things. I was never given any receipt.

I went there a 3rd time and was told the full plaster was shaking so I had to pay an additional USD30 for the restoration of the plaster. I told them I don’t have the money.

Mr Mutede lowered the fee to USD20 but I insisted I didn’t have any money except for a little for transport.

Mate, who said his leg was swollen and could not walk, said he was sent away without being treated. He added that he spoke to some hospital officials, Nyakura, Mr Chikara who pledged to assist him but nothing has been done since then.

Mate estimated that during the time he was being treated, a total of 10 people could have undergone the same process as himself.

We also got in touch with another patient who only wanted to be identified as Luzani who went to Gokwe North District Hospital with a fractured arm.

He said he was given a half plaster which cost US10 and ZWL$300 bond for bandages and Cotton wool.

Luzani said he went back for a full plaster for US$20. He said the officials who attended to him explained to him that the money was for sundries which were not available at the institution.

He added:

The officials bought the sundries on my behalf and I got treatment.

We also got in touch with Mr Mutede, one of the officials in the rehab department who confirmed that the hospital does not have sundries adding that patients buy from the pharmacy which is nearby.

Mutede revealed that he has personal plasters which go for USD5 each adding that one might need about 4 plasters which would translate to USD20.

He said he sometimes sells plasters which would have been left by patients who no longer need them. Mutede said he would put some interest to “make a profit.”

Mutede said:

He (Emmanuel Mate) was bitter because he did not get treated. Yes, it’s not lawful, pamutemo hazvibvumidzwi kuti titengese. Vanhu vanozvitengera vega (We’re not allowed to be selling personal sundries to patients.)

But the procedure is that patients pay a consultation fee of ZWL$80, an Xray fee which is less than ZWL$120, the cost for sundries differ depending on the extent of the injury but they are charged paWindow (Accounts/reception).

I told him (Mate) to go and buy but failed and he opted to buy from me. It’s actually the first time that someone comes back complaining. I have assisted many people so far.

Dr Chikara – District Medical Officer (DMO) – confirmed Mr Mutede’s claim that the hospital did not have the sundries, resultantly, patients buy from sources of their choice.

He also said that it was not allowed for officials to be selling personal sundries at the institution but there have been reports that some officials were actually selling their own sundries taking advantage of shortages at the health institution.

Chikara added:

We do have pending cases, investigations are ongoing and we expect a hearing process to begin by end of the month (December).

If one is caught violating the law, they are likely to be given a verbal warning and or dismissal depending on the gravity of the case.

He added that he met one patient (Mate) who had paid USD and told the patient to come back to get his leg sorted and officially file a complaint.

A nurse who works in Bulawayo said corruption at Gokwe North District Hospital mirrors corruption at almost all public health institutions nationwide.

She added:

This kind of manipulation doesn’t end there we see it everywhere and unfortunately, almost everyone does it.

It’s a creation of a false shortage to make you desperate. Even some senior doctors do it at central hospitals by telling you that an operation can only be done privately.

The rot is deep, you need like months to investigate it.

This is happening when the public is struggling to make ends meet. Sadly, the majority of the general populace cannot afford prices at private health institutions.

Hon Hwende Sets Record Straight On Source Of MDC Alliance Funding

Tinashe Sambiri|The MDC MDC Alliance has dismissed as cheap political talk claims by Zanu PF that South African President Cyril Ramaphosa is funding the opposition party.

The popular movement gets its funding from dedicated members, according to Hon Charlton Hwende, the MDC Alliance Secretary General.

Read statement below:

We are only Funded by our Membership

We are obviously shocked by these baseless allegations that we are being Funded by the South African President. Zanu pf is out to destroy our party. They have done everything humanly possible to do so including diverting our lawfully guranteed public money from the Political Parties Finances Act, seizing our party headquarters via the assistance of the military, recalling our Members of Parliament and Councillors and therefore effectively overturning the will of the people as expressed in 2018 elections and arresting our leaders. As we speak, our Vice Chairman Job Sikhala and Party Spokesperson were arrested on a non- existing law of communicating falsehoods. Our Harare Mayor is in prison on trumped up charges and has been denied his rights to bail and health.

All these shenanigans are meant to destroy the only authentic opposition in Zimbabwe. And yet such efforts are not bearing fruits and that is why they continue to make baseless accusations including that MDC Alliance is funded by the ANC. This allegation is also meant to silence the South African government and the ANC on speaking on the crisis in Zimbabwe.

Court Says Hopewell Chin’ono Was Correctly Charged

Harare magistrate Lazini Ncube has placed journalist Hopewell Chin’ono on remand for undermining the police through a tweet.

He was charged with contravening section 31 (a)(iii) of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act Chapter 9: 23, a charge which his defence argued was invalid as it had been struck off the Statutes by a 2014 Constitutional Court ruling.

Ncube ruled that it was his observation that General Amendment Act 3 of 2016 was used to validate the charge after the Legislature only amended a few words in the section and retained the offence.

“Though it was declared void by his defence, the Legislature retained it for professional reasons, hence it still exists as law. Only the words ‘Prison Service’ were replaced by ‘Prisons and Correctional Services’,” he said.

The magistrate further stated that section 61 of the Constitution now provides limitations to freedom of expression, thus duly placing accused on remand.

Eight More Suspects Nabbed Over US$2.5 Million Money Heist

Eight more suspected armed robbers have been arrested in connection with the US $2,5 million heist which occurred along the Harare-Chinhoyi Road Wednesday last week.

This brings to 11, the number of suspects arrested so far in connection with the case.

Last week, four armed robbers made off with US$2,5 million and $40 000 in dramatic fashion after they had reportedly been offered a lift by a security company’s cash-in-transit vehicle.

The spellbinding incident, which saw three suspects being arrested and assisting police with investigations, occurred around 2pm near Gwebi River Bridge.

The cash-in-transit team, which was travelling in a Toyota Hilux, picked up six male passengers at Westgate and Inkomo Barracks Turn-off. The money was stashed in seven cash boxes.

Sources close to the investigations said the eight suspects were arrested between Saturday and yesterday.

Of the eight, two soldiers were arrested in Battlefields, Kadoma while four suspects were arrested in Harare.

The seventh suspect was picked up in Murambinda while the eighth suspect was arrested at Goromonzi tollgate on the Harare-Mutare Road.

The eight are expected to appear in court this morning as investigations continue.

“Herd Immunity Cannot Be Achieved In 2021”: WHO

World Health Organization (WHO) chief scientist Soumya Swaminathan said Monday that herd immunity to the coronavirus would not be achieved in 2021, despite the growing availability of vaccines.

Mitigating factors to herd immunity include limited access to vaccines in developing countries, skepticism about vaccination and the potential for virus mutations, according to health experts.

A growing number of countries around the world – including the United States, the United Kingdom, Singapore, and Germany and other EU countries – are in the first stages of mass-vaccination campaigns.

Herd immunity occurs when enough people in a population have immunity to an infection so that it prevents the disease from spreading.

Swaminathan commended the “incredible progress” made by researchers to develop several safe and effective vaccines at unprecedented speed.

Countries are currently administering vaccines developed by BioNTech-Pfizer, Oxford University/AstraZeneca and Moderna.

By A Correspondent- Seventy one people at the Beitbridge isolation centre as of yesterday tested positive to COVID-19 with 59 of them being local cases referred from the district hospital, it has emerged.

This was revealed in the latest International Organisation for Migration (IOM) update released yesterday.

The United Nations agency said on January 1, in collaboration with the Information and Publicity, Health and Child Care ministries, Zimbabwe Republic Police and District Development Council conducted risk communication and community engagement awareness campaigns on COVID-19 in eight areas, bus stations, marketplaces, and shopping areas in Beitbridge urban reaching more than 1 000 individuals.

It revealed that 71 individuals at the Beitbridge isolation centre tested positive to COVID-19.

“As of today (Monday), there are currently 71 (55 males and 16 females) individuals at Beitbridge isolation centre who tested positive for COVID-19, 59 of whom are local cases referred from the district hospital,” the IOM report said.

“On January 10, several selfrepatriating migrants (69 male adults, five male minors, 88 female adults and eight female minors) passed through the border post in 14 buses, they all had valid COVID-19-free results and were processed to go home.”

The IOM also stated that from January 9 at 6am to January 10 at 6am, a total of 362 truck drivers (all males) were screened at Port Health with the support of IOM.

“During the same period, a total of 422 (283 males and 139 females) pedestrians were also screened on both entry and exit,” IOM reported.

The developments come at a time the South African authorities have closed the border to foreigners except nationals returning to their country, foreigners returning to their countries, cargo transport and diplomats among others.

Zimbabwe as of Monday, had 22 297 confirmed cases, 13 213 recoveries, 8 556 active cases and 528 deaths. Government last week imposed a hard national lockdown to curb the spread of the pandemic.

In an unrelated issue, the IOM also reported that heavy rains on January 7 and a subsequent burst at Gungwa Pumphouse resulted in overspilling of Lake Mutirikwi in Masvingo.

This caused flash floods downstream in Chiredzi ward 16 which resulted in eight family members being marooned.

They were rescued on January 8 and are currently at Calisaunders Hospital in Triangle where they are receiving treatment and counselling.

“Due to the trauma experienced in witnessing other family members, including their mother being swept away, the bereaved family needs psychological support as a fundamental need. Given that the mother was a breadwinner, other notable needs to this family include food and non-food items,” IOM said.-newsday

Woman Douses Ex-Boyfriend With Petrol

By A Correspondent- A 43 year old man sustained severe burns when his ex-girlfriend poured petrol on him before setting him alight following a misunderstanding over the contents of a peace order.

Paddington Chinyoka of Chibanda village in Mashonaland East province is in a critical condition at Marondera Provincial Hospital after being attacked by his ex-girlfriend Margaret Muranduri (29).

Muranduri has since been arrested and charged with attempted murder.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the incident on Tuesday and urged the public not to use violence to resolve misunderstandings.

He said:

Violence is unacceptable and never should it be used as a tool to settle disputes. People should learn to find amicable ways to solve any misunderstandings.

The incident reportedly took place on 29 December last year at around 11 pm at Muranduri’s home.

Muranduri had called Chinyoka to come to her place and collect a copy of a peace order when the two clashed, with the complainant arguing that the order was too harsh on him.

This resulted in a quarrel between the two and when Chinyoka attempted to open a gas cylinder which was in the room in a bid to set Muranduri on fire, the latter allegedly picked up a container with petrol, splashed the contents on Chinyoka and set him on fire.

A neighbour rescued Chinyoka by putting out the fire and rushing him to Marondera Provincial Hospital.

The matter was reported to police, leading to Muranduri’s arrest.

Mahere’s Lawyers Demand Dead Baby’s Mother’s Identity

By A Correspondent- Lawyers representing MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere on charges of communicating falsehoods through social media on Tuesday told a Harare magistrate that they would want to know the identity of the woman who alleged that a police officer had killed her baby in a video that went viral on social media.

Mahere appeared before magistrate Trynos Wutawashe on allegations of posting false information on Twitter that the police officer in the video had killed a nine-month-old baby.

Freelance journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and MDC Alliance deputy chairperson Job Sikhala have already appeared in court on similar charges emanating from the same video.

After the video went viral, the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) issued a statement dismissing social media reports that the woman’s child had been killed by the police officer.

The ZRP however did not reveal the woman’s identity or the police officer involved in the fracas.

Meanwhile, in a Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation Television (ZBCtv) broadcast aired on Tuesday night, the woman who claimed in the video that her baby had been killed by police was identified as Rebecca Musariri.

The woman told ZBC News that she and her baby were both fine.

Nick Mangwana Threatens Hopewell Chinono’s Court Witnesses | UPDATED.

By Dorothy Moyo | Information Ministry Secretary Ndabaningi Mangwana has used his position to threaten court witnesses in the ongoing court case against journalist Hopewell Chin’ono, lawyers Job Sikhala, and Fadzayi Mahere.

Writing Wednesday morning, Mangwana used his position to impose a dead-end on witnesses, saying the identity of the Second Street mum of the motionless baby filmed on the 4th January last week Monday, is already sealed.

Last night, the state broadcaster, ZBC produced a video saying it is of the Second Street mother as she exonerated the police while blaming mere windscreen glass for the attack against the child which got the capital city to a standstill last week.

Nick Mangwana

Responding to ZimEye last week, Nick Mangwana had said, ” We have checked and so far @PoliceZimbabwe have no report of a baby that has been killed. Maybe they receive one later but nobody is yet to report a dead baby. They said they are investigating the skirmishes in this video.”

The woman presented by Mangwana and the ZBC last night is thinner, has a smaller-nose bridge, long braids, and has no earnings contrary to the one on the original video who wrestles a police officer amid loud screaming that he has killed her child.

The allegation of killing the child is repeated over nice times over a short 43 second clip.

The incident is the one that saw the Zimbabwe Republic Police driving to Hopewell Chinono’s house to arrest him last week.

But Mangwana on Tuesday responded as follows:

Is WWE Beast Mtawarira’s next move?

By A Correspondent| Instagram was abuzz last night when Rugby World Cup winner, Tendai ‘Beast’ Mtawarira expressed his interest in joining WWE, during an Instagram live chat with WWE Superstar, Kofi Kingston.

“There he is, the Beast!” is how Kofi started the chat with Mtawarira, pointing out that he was excited to get the opportunity to speak to another African star based in America and whose journey to success has been similar to his. The two stars had the conversation to celebrate each other’s sporting achievements, a year since Mtawarira joined US Major League Rugby side, Old Glory DC.

The stars have had similarly-timed moments of success, both achieving their championship dreams in the same year, 2019, while representing two nations. Kofi is a Ghanian-born American professional Wrestler in WWE, and Beast is a Zimbabwean-born South African rugby player.

Beast spoke of his interest in WWE after Kofi acknowledged that some of his fellow Superstars actually started in Rugby. The WWE Superstar asked if Beast would one day consider stepping into the ring, because his name and body type would be perfect in the WWE Universe. The rugby player responded that he has been a fan since he was young and it would be an amazing experience, given the fact that he looks up to WWE legends like Hulk Hogan and The Rock. “To actually get the opportunity to come to the WWE, even on a once-off appearance, I would be so excited. Let’s see what happens man, maybe you can open some doors!” Beast responded. Springboks captain, Siya Kolisi questioned his former team mate’s chances of WWE success by commenting “Kofi will fly kick your a**.”

Kofi then advised Beast on how he could potentially prepare for a WWE appearance, vowing to do what he can to make it possible.

The discussion also included similarities in their individual journeys, as they both left their home countries at a young age to find success.

Besides being a Rugby World Champion, Beast is a Castle Lager Rugby Championship  winner (2019) and Currie Cup winner (2008, 2010 and 2013) with the Sharks. He has 117 caps with the Springboks, making him the third most capped Springbok of all time behind Victor Matfield and Bryan Habana. The 2019 Rugby World Cup Winner stated, “It was always my dream to win a World Cup, to be a world champion because throughout my journey I’ve worked hard for 12 years to achieve the goal and it happened.”

Kofi became the first African-born WWE Champion after winning the title at Wrestlemania 35 in 2019. “Being able to take the WWE Championship back to Ghana for me was probably one of the best experiences of my life, you know. Seeing Ghanaian children, letting them hold the WWE Championship belt, having them see the name Kofi on it, such a popular name in Ghana. They could see doors being unlocked (for them) and it’s like woah, I can do anything!” said the Superstar.

He has won 21 WWE Championships over the course of his career. These include the  WWE Championship, WWE Intercontinental, WWE United States Championship, Raw Tag Team and SmackDown Championships.

Watch Kofi Kingston on Raw every Tuesday morning at 03.00am on WWE DSTV Channel 236.

Nick Mangwana’s 2nd St Baby-Mama Has Small Nose Bridge

Fadzayi Mahere Spills The Beans On Horrific Prison Conditions

By A Correspondent- MDC Alliance spokesperson Fadzayi Mahere, who was Tuesday remanded in custody to Friday on charges of publishing falsehoods, complained in court of the deplorable state of cells at the Harare Central Police Station.

She was arrested Monday before she was brought to court Tuesday.

However, Mahere told Magistrate Trynos Utahwashe her detention in police cells overnight was unnecessary as her arresting officers had completed their work by Monday mid-morning.

“Her detention from that time was unnecessary,” Mahere’s lawyer David Drury told the court adding the conditions of the police cells were “unbearable”.

“They are filled with the stench of stale urine and there no blankets. There were no temperature checks or sanitisers at the police entrance. There is no social distancing in the waiting area or holding cells. No masks are available in the cells as cellmates had old masks.

“There is also no provisions of sanitary ware in the cells. The toilet was a pit latrine surrounded by a puddle of urine. There is no separation with the beds and toilet hole as well as privacy during menstruation.”

Mahere’s lawyer added:

“A pungent smell exists because of lack of aeration. The cell blocks are small and seven inmates were crowded in each room. You have to walk barefooted and women take off their undergarments.”

Magistrate Utahwashe said he got worried if he received such complaints and ordered the state to investigate and bring a full report Friday

ZIMSEC Markers Contract Coronavirus

Teachers’ unions have claimed that about 200 of their members currently marking recently completed ZIMSEC examinations have tested positive for Covid-19.

The unions want the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) to stop the marking process until it is safe to continue.

Speaking to the Daily News on Monday, Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) president, Takavafira Zhou said:

Teachers must use their brains, and not stomachs, during these hard times. “Covid-19 is real and unless as teachers, we use our brains more than the stomach, we will be decimated.

Several teachers have reported for Zimsec marking and more than 200 teachers have now tested positive at the various marking centres across the country.

Zimsec, that has not invested in teachers’ health and safety, will simply discard those infected and hire other teachers. Our humble submission to all teachers is that life is more important than a few pieces of silver.

Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union president, Obert Masaraure, said Zimsec must consider the safety of teachers first and stop examination marking.

However, Zimsec spokesperson, Nicky Dhlamini, said they had not received any report of teachers testing positive.

This comes after reports which suggest that about 50 school heads had tested positive for the coronavirus across the country.

Teachers had since last year opposed the reopening of schools saying the move puts the lives of teachers and learners in danger.

A surge in coronavirus cases forced the government to suspend the start of the 2021 school calendar.-Daily News

Warriors Ready For CHAN…

Two Cabinet Ministers Die Of COVID-19 In Malawi

Two senior Malawian cabinet ministers and two other senior political figures died on Tuesday from COVID-19, the government said.

The deaths followed a cabinet meeting and other gatherings attended by politicians over the Christmas period, but officials did not say where the victims were infected.

Local Government Minister Lingson Berekanyama and Transport Minister Sidik Mia both succumbed to the disease in the early hours of Tuesday, the government spokesman said.

They were senior members of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP), the main partner in an alliance that unseated ex-leader Peter Mutharika in a second round election in June last year, delivering victory to President Lazarus Chakwera. Mia had been tipped as a possible successor to Chakwera.

All 31 of Malawi’s cabinet attended the meeting in the president’s oval office on Dec. 21, and the following day labour minister Ken Kandodo reporting having contracted the coronavirus. He has since recovered. Another minister, Rashid Gaffar, is self-isolating at home.

There were several gatherings, prayers and a funeral in the country over the Christmas period which Chakwera and other officials attended, all of them broadcast on state TV.

“Malawi has lost a true patriot, a hard worker,” spokesman Kazako said of Berekanyama, breaking down in tears on public radio as he reported the news.

The former Governor of Malawi’s central bank, Francis Perekamoyo, and the Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Ernest Kantchentche, also died of the disease, the government announced.

Chakwera is due to address the nation at 3 p.m. (1300 GMT) on Tuesday.

On Monday Malawi recorded 452 new Covid cases and 10 new deaths, the highest daily average since the first case was confirmed in April, the co-chair of the Presidential Taskforce on COVID, John Phuka, said in a statement.

He said Malawi now had a cumulative total of 9,027 cases, and 235 deaths. Some 1,852 of the cases were imported cases, mostly from returnees from South Africa, where a new highly contagious variant of the virus was found.

Why I Killed My Parents…

A man from Mangwe District in Plumtree, who allegedly killed his parents in cold blood and set fire to a hut with their bodies, yesterday led police on indications at the homestead.

Suspect speaks

Lisani Nleya (45) appeared remorseless as he casually narrated how he carried out the callous killing.

Shackled in leg irons and handcuffs, Lisani told detectives that his parents — 83-year-old Mr Nicholas Nleya, who had partially lost his sight, and his wife Margaret (78) who was walking with the aid of a stick — deserved to die for bewitching him.

He said he acted alone in the ruthless double-murder that shocked the country in September last year.

Herdsmen at the homestead told police last year that they fled for their lives at around 10pm when they heard Margaret begging her assailant(s) to spare her life.

After killing his parents, Lisani allegedly lit Molotov cocktails and sticks of dynamite in the hut to destroy evidence. He was arrested at a prophet’s house in Emakhandeni suburb on Sunday following a tip off.

Lisani allegedly confessed to police that he had sneaked into the country from South Africa to commit the horrific crime.

He is said to have cut ties with his family and had not communicated with them in 15 years. Lisani lived in South Africa but would come to Zimbabwe to spend time in Bulawayo with friends but never set foot at the homestead nor bothered to check on his relatives.

Yesterday he was brought to the homestead under heavy police guard. Clad in white jeans, blue tackies, a brown jacket and a black mask, Lisani took the officers behind the homestead and showed them how he entered on the fateful day.

He said his weapons, which included three petrol bombs and a petrol container, were in a satchel on his shoulders.

Lisani told officers that he demanded money when he entered his parents’ bedroom hut and his mother extended R200 which he dismissed as too little. His mother, he said, told him she did not have more as she had just paid a doctor for a check-up.

Forensic reports and a post-mortem indicate they may have been axed or stabbed to death before being set alight. Lisani narrated how he threw three petrol bombs inside the room.

Like a sniper, he said, he threw the first bomb which ignited the house and provided light for him to aim at his targets with the second. He said a third bomb did the greatest damage.

It blew up part of the house, shook the ground and threw him some meters away resulting in a leg injury.

Lisani said after being satisfied that his mission was complete, he dashed outside the homestead jumping over the fence to evade people he expected to arrive at any moment.

After observing from a distance for a while, he said he rushed to the place where he had left a bicycle and cycled about 90km to Figtree before getting a lift that took him to Bulawayo.

He took his parents’ two cellphones, sold one to a Nigerian in South Africa and the other is still at his rented place in South Africa. Villagers who spoke to Chronicle on Monday said Lisani was the black sheep of the family who deserted the army and headed for South Africa.

They said he was different from his siblings who had “made it in life” and appeared disinterested in taking advantage of the same opportunities his parents afforded the family through hard work and education.

Some alleged he had on a number of occasions, threatened to deal with his parents whom he accused of bewitching him.

The couple was buried in one big grave just centimetres apart at Empandeni Mission Cemetery, on September 8 last year. -Chronicle

Model Raped During A Photoshoot, Now Suspect is Freed On Bail. ,

A 33-year-old man who allegedly raped an 18-year-old pregnant woman during a private photoshoot in Bulawayo, was arrested on Monday and appeared in court the same day.

Phakamani Sibanda of 6 Hardy Road in Sunnyside, Bulawayo, was remanded out of custody to February 15 for continuation of the trial. Bulawayo province police spokesperson, Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed Mr Sibanda’s arrest.

“Police acting on a tip-off from members of the public arrested a 33-year-old man, Phakamani Sibanda, in connection to the alleged rape of a pregnant 18-year-old woman during a private photoshoot last year in December in Bulawayo.

“He has since appeared in court and was remanded out of custody until February 15 for continuation of the trial,” said Insp Ncube.

The photo studio where the alleged rape occurred is situated at the corner of Fort Street and Fourth Avenue in Bulawayo.

The incident occurred on December 28 last year, when the complainant went to the studio for a photoshoot at around 9AM.

She was wearing a dress and Sibanda took some photos of her and after some time she asked for a room to change her clothing for another set of photos. Mr Sibanda provided her an office for her to change her clothes.

As she was changing, the accused knocked and entered the room and instructed her to take off her skin tight so that the photo could be of greater quality. She told Sibanda she wasn’t comfortable with his request.

After voicing her concerns, Sibanda left the office and the victim changed into a new set of clothes and then proceeded to continue with the photoshoot. When they were done and she went to change again, that was when the Sibanda allegedly pounced.

It is alleged Sibanda followed her into the office, held her by the waist and told her that she looked good before raping her. During the ordeal, she screamed for help, but no one came to her aid.

Afterwards, Sibanda is said to have apologised for his actions and told her he would send some photos.

A report of the rape was made on December 31, after the victim narrated her ordeal to another woman, leading to his arrest on Monday. -Chronicle
