Mnangagwa’s “Rudd Concession:” Caledonia Mining Takes More Mining Land In Midlands, Connemara Area Next Target.

Caledonia Mining Blanket Mine shaft

Caledonia Mining Corporation has entered into another option agreement in Zimbabwe having entered into an option agreement over Glen Hume, also in Zimbabwe, earlier in December.

This option agreement gives Caledonia the exclusive right to explore and subsequently, if exploration is successful and at its sole discretion, acquire the mining claims over an area known as Connemara North, a property which, like Glen Hume, is situated in the Gweru mining district in the Zimbabwe Midlands that has historically produced significant quantities of gold.

Connemara North is approximately 30 km from Glen Hume with good road access between them offering the potential of operating synergies should Caledonia decide to develop both areas.

Connemara North is the northern section of the currently closed Connemara mine, which was previously owned by First Quantum Minerals; it was placed on care and maintenance in 2001 and subsequently disposed of in 2003.

It has not been commercially mined since this time but before being placed on care and maintenance the Connemara mine produced approximately 20 000 ozpa of gold from an open pit heap leach operation. Previous public disclosures made by First Quantum in 2001 indicated that they had plans to expand the existing open pit operations at Connemara mine, when gold prices were approximately US$300/oz.

At this stage it is not possible for Caledonia to verify any of the work performed by previous owners or to ascertain what proportion of any purported resource lay within the boundaries of the Connemara North property over which the company has secured the option.

The option gives Caledonia the right to explore the area for a period of up to 18 months and subsequently, if exploration is successful and at its sole discretion, to acquire the mining claims over the area. The total consideration is an initial payment of $300 000, followed by a further payment of $5 million (payable in cash or shares at the discretion of the vendor), which would be payable should Caledonia decide to exercise its right to acquire the mining claims. Caledonia has also agreed to the payment of a 1% net smelter royalty to the vendor on gold it produces from Connemara North.

“We are pleased to enter into this option agreement which gives us the right to explore and subsequently to acquire mining claims over the Connemara North property, part of a wider area that contained a previously operational mine which shows great potential and has been lying untapped for 20 years,” says Caledonia Mining Corporation CEO Steve Curtis

“We are excited at the prospectivity of Connemara North and Glen Hume and if evaluation work proves successful and our exploration programs deliver favorable results, Caledonia will have a great opportunity to establish a footprint in the highly prospective Zimbabwe Midlands, which could deliver operating synergies between the two sites

“This has been a busy year for Caledonia and with the completion of Central Shaft in sight I am pleased that we are now able to start delivering on the other components of our corporate strategy,” Curtis concludes.

Leaders Of Mozambiquen Islamist Militants Identified

Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi

MAPUTO. — Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said on Wednesday the government was aware of Islamic radicalisation in the northern province of Cabo Delgado five years before jihadists launched a bloody insurgency there.

More than 2 300 people have died and over 570 000 have fled their homes since a shadowy group, known locally as Al-Shabab, unleashed their campaign in the gas-rich province.

In a state-of-the-nation address to lawmakers, Nyusi revealed the identity of the group’s purported leaders and details about their organisation’s rise.

“The radicalisation was promoted by a citizen of Tanzanian nationality identified as Abdul Shakulo,” he said.

“He urged disobedience to the constitution, banned Muslim children from attending (state) schools and required them to attend madrasas, or Koranic schools,” he said.

“The criminal activities of these groups, who called themselves Islamists, started in 2012. The government of Mozambique already knew (of them) in 2012 and managed to contain their expansion until 2017.”

In 2017, the jihadists attacked three police posts in the city of Mocimboa da Praia, killing two police officers.

Since then, the group carried out more than 500 attacks, according to ACLED, a US-based NGO which documents the violence.

Government forces have failed to contain their advance.

But Nyusi said many of the movement’s leaders have been killed in combat and the government was committed to equipping and training its troops to overcome the insurgency.

“We Mozambicans need to develop our capabilities internally. We will be the ones who will be in the first line of defence of our homeland. The government will do everything to make this process happen,” he said.

Nyusi added that the leadership of the group was “mostly foreign” and named five men who he said had been killed in fighting the security forces.

“Among the terrorists killed in combat, there are citizens of Tanzanian origin, Congolese, Somalis, Ugandans, Kenyans and mostly Mozambicans,” he said.

A number of countries have been offering aid to Mozambique to fight the jihadists, including the former colonial ruler Portugal, the United States, France, Spain and Russia, Nyusi said.

“We are intensifying international cooperation to combat terrorism,” he said, adding that the various proposals were being assessed to ensure a coordinated strategy.

“Stay Safe,” Education Minister Delivers Message To School Children As Schools Close

Education Minister Cain Mathema

PRIMARY and Secondary Education Minister Ambassador Cain Mathema has called on pupils to be vigilant and take all necessary measures to prevent contracting the deadly Covid-19 virus during the festive holidays.

Schools have been the latest target of Covid-19 and the Third Term which ends today saw more than 300 pupils contracting the deadly virus.

In his Christmas message, Ambassador Mathema said pupils should enjoy the holiday responsibly remembering that on January 4, schools are opening for the First term.

He also hailed President Mnangagwa for his direction which has led to the socio-economic development of the nation.

Minister Mathema also extended his gratitude to teachers, pupils and all responsible authorities for the support despite challenges brought by Covid-19 during the school year ending today.

He said one of the major successes was being able to contain and manage Covid-19 at 49 affected schools countrywide.

“It has been a challenging year with the advent of the Covid-19 pandemic, which is still among us today. The pandemic forced Government to send all schools into lockdown for at least six months from 24 March 2020. However, I must hasten to applaud that together, we have managed to ride the waves in ensuring that learning and teaching continues in spite of the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Ambassador Mathema.

He said Government and school authorities successfully administered the June 2020 ZIMSEC examinations, reopened schools through the phased school calendar and managed the Cambridge examinations.

“The containment and management of Covid-19 cases in 49 of the 9 625 schools with no casualty reported to date was a major success for the Ministry. We also conducted the ZIMSEC examinations for Grade 7, Form 4 and Form 6 without discriminating those that tested positive for Covid-19,” said Ambassador Mathema.

He said that innovative alternative teaching and learning strategies were used for learners to catch-up and cover lost learning and teaching time during the lockdown.

Ambassador Mathema said to implement social distancing for the prevention and management of Covid-19, the Ministry had established an alternative schooling timetable to cater for infrastructure deficiencies.

He said several milestones were reached and challenges addressed within the ministry, in collaboration with sister Ministries, partners and stakeholders.

“These challenges range from Covid-19 infections in some schools, shortages of personal protective equipment and conditions of service of teachers. Indeed, your cooperation with the Ministry has made these recent months of our association a source of great satisfaction and encouragement to me in this important period of our country’s educational development,” he said.

Ambassador Mathema called for continued mutual cooperation in 2021 from pupils, teachers, school authorities, partners and every stakeholder within the Ministry.

“I also want to remind our learners that as they go into their communities, they should be vigilant to stay safe and prevent infection from Covid-19 as the school opening day on 4 January 2021 beckons.

It has been fantastic working with all the constructive and progressive players in the Education Sector in 2020 and I hope together we can continue providing quality, relevant, equitable, inclusive and wholesome education for all Zimbabweans,” he said.

Mayor To Hold His Wedding At A Stadium Despite Covid-19 Concerns

The mayor of Zambia’s capital, Lusaka, has stirred a bit of controversy by planning to hold his wedding in a stadium in the city while the coronavirus measures say weddings should be limited to 50 people.

But Miles Sampa defended his decision on BBC Focus on Africa radio by saying that it wasn’t his choice but “the people of Lusaka told me that they wanted to attend the wedding”.

His said that a pre-wedding event at his home was mobbed by hundreds of people.

To avoid overcrowding, he has decided to hold the wedding ceremony and reception in the stadium the day after Christmas and let people in on a first-come-first-serve basis.

He added that coronavirus safety measures would be in place.

Answering criticism that he could delay the nuptials he said: “I’m not going to wait until corona disappears – my bride might run away!”

No Water In Harare This Weekend

Own Correspondent

Morton Jaffray waterworks

All suburbs in Harare will have dry taps this weekend as the local authority has completely shut down its main water treatment plant, Morton Jaffray, to install a new pump and carry out routine maintenance.
The council has been shutting down the water treatment plant over the past years for various reasons, including routine maintenance, but that has failed to translate into increased water supplies to suburbs.

A notice to residents yesterday said; “The Harare City Council would like to notify residents and stakeholders that there will be a shutdown at Morton Jaffray and Warren Control Waterworks scheduled from 4pm on Friday 18 December up to Sunday 20 December 2020,” it said.

“The shutdown is to enable our contractors to install new water pumps. The department will also be taking advantage of this critical shutdown to undertake other critical outstanding maintenance works.”

Residents have been urged to use available water sparingly during the period. The Harare City Council said the successful completion of the works will reduce physical water losses obtaining at the moment.

Mdc Alliance Trio Separated Trial Fails To Kick Off, Rescheduled To Next Year

Paul Nyathi

Joana Mamombe

THE High Court Tuesday put on hold the start of the trial of MDC Alliance youth activists Cecilia Chimbiri and Netsai Marova which was set to commence on Wednesday.

The trial could not proceed after the two approached the High Court asking for stay of proceedings pending a determination on their co-accused Joanna Mamombe’s appeal at the High Court.

Mamombe filed for a review of Magistrate Bianca Makwande’s ruling separating her from her party colleagues in the matter.

Makwande had separated the three on the basis that Mamombe was mentally unfit to stand trial.

“We were not happy with the magistrate’s decision. So, we approached the High Court seeking stay of trial for the two. We have obtained the order. At the same time Mamombe applied for a review of the magistrate’s ruling separating her from her co-accused. So, the matter has been postponed to January 22 next year awaiting a determination on the appeal,” lawyer Alec Muchadehama, representing the three, told journalists.

The prosecution is, however, accusing the three of falsifying their arrest, abduction and torture to smear Zimbabwe’s human rights record.

Patrick Chinamasa Takes Swipe At Straight Talking Nelson Chamisa

Paul Nyathi

Patrick Chinamasa

ZANU PF spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa has Unwarrantedly castigated MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa for what he says is being a “shameless liar” after the opposition leader rightfully blame the Government for the demolitions of houses in the suburb of Budiriro in Harare.

While addressing journalists at the Politburo meeting on Wednesday, acting Chinamasa said Chamisa should not try to hide behind a finger.

“Let me put the record straight, the demolitions were sought and carried out by the MDC-A ran municipality but what surprises us is that Mr Chamisa, fully aware that his council was behind the demolitions went and sought to blame it on the central government, a complete falsehood, a complete lie. The record is very clear”.

Chinamasa said the ruling party had made it clear that they would be no demolitions until and unless alternative accommodation has been found.

“We were not aware that despite those pronouncements on our part, the municipal council of Harare would go ahead, with the blessing of their leader Mr Chamisa and demolish without offering alternative arrangements.

“We are aware that they had gone and sought a court order.

“I want to believe what colleagues of Mr Chamisa say about him that he is opportunistic.

“He lacks moral fibre to accept that they erred in demolishing houses.

“He clearly has no regard for the truth and we condemn this lack of principle in the strongest terms,” Chinamasa said.

Chamisa early this week described the demolition of houses, which exposed residents to rains and diseases as “cruel and heartless” and criticised the government saying that it behaves in an unpleasant old fashioned manner.

Chamisa toured the demolished houses in Budiriro high-density suburb in Harare where he came face-to-face with desperate residents, who had been sleeping in the open for days after their houses were razed down.

Over 150 houses were demolished in Budiriro, leaving hundreds of people, including children in the open.

Property worth thousands of dollars was also destroyed in the process.

Chamisa accused government of masterminding the demolitions.

“The council is under control of spooky and shadowy forces that are ruthlessly driving an agenda to punish the people. Council has no police, no teargas canisters and it is clear it is the State that gave the police the greenlight to fight the people. What we can see is the visible hand of the State interfering with the operations of the councils,” Chamisa said.

“It is a pattern of corrupted governance software where you use force and violence even where it is not called for. Why were the houses allowed to be built in the first place? Why inflict pain when the weather conditions are unfavourable and the rains are upon us. Can’t you spare a thought for kids and parents?

“The heartless and cruel demolition of citizens’ homes is a violation of the dignity and security of persons. This command politics based on iron-fisted governance style must be resisted by us all. Those responsible please stop it,” he said.

Govt Produces List Of Housing Cooperatives Whose Houses Will Be Demolished, So Who Is Behind The Inhumane Act?

Paul Nyathi

Tafadzwa Muguti

Government through the Office of the Harare Provincial Development Coordinator’s office has produced a full list of all housing cooperatives in the capital whose houses are set for demolishing.

Provision of the list and warning but goverment could well be an answer to the question of who is behind the demolishing which has been described as inhumane and harsh.

Below is the statement from goverment.

Lecturer Accused Of Showing His Manhood To A Female Student For Marks, Suing Student For $3m Defamation Of Character

The Mirror

Dr Tapiwa Mudyahoto

Dr Tapiwa Mudyahoto, a senior lecturer with the Great Zimbabwe University (GZU) has filed a $3m defamation lawsuit against a female student who accused him of demanding sex from her for marks.

The papers were served on Nomsa Mwashita this week under case number 234/2020 and Mirror investigations have shown that the plaintiff plans to defend herself against the claim.

According to papers obtained by The Mirror, Mudyahoto says Mwashita, a Bachelor of Education (BED) student made a false report to authorities alleging that the former demanded sex from her in exchange for marks. Mwashita went on to fail the subject taught by Mudyahoto and she blamed the result on her refusal to give in to her lecturer’s demands.

Mudyahoto who says he has a PHD in Philosophy from Fort Hare University taught Introduction to sport module and in 2019 Mwashita was one of his 24 students under Part one Semester 2.

Mwashita also accused Mudyahoto of showing her his manhood when she visited his office.

Mudyahoto says in his court application that this was defamatory and added that the University has since cleared him of any wrongdoing after three independent lecturers to remarked Mwashita’s examination papers and all three still gave her a fail.

Mudyahoto also alleges that Mwashita failed to provide information on the incident where she was shown the former’s sex organ. This, he says, forced the University to abandon investigations of the matter.

Sources however, told The Mirror that it was not true that Mwashita failed the exam after her papers were remarked. They said that instead all three markers gave her pass marks.

The sources also said that Introduction to Sports is the only module that Mwashita has ever failed during her course work.

“After the publication of results the defendant lodged a false and baseless allegation that she failed the module because she turned down plaintiff’s love proposal.

“The defendant’s allegations were communicated to various departments including student affairs, Human resources, security and the vice chancellor’s office,” reads part of the court document.

Blitz On Corruption At Beitbridge Border Post, Two More Customs Officials Arrested

State Media

The police have arrested two more Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) officials deployed at Beitbridge Border Post, as the Government intensifies its crack down on rent-seeking activities at the border with South Africa.

Nelson Chinguwo and Innocent Sithole are accused of causing the clandestine release to their owner’s goods that had been seized for violation of customs laws.

The state stood to lose over $6,2 million and US$8 000 in import revenue.

Under the current customs law, goods seized from offenders are kept in a State warehouse for 90 days before being disposed of through an auction in the event the owners fail to settle matters with the revenue collector within a given period.

Authorities estimate that the country could be losing an estimated US$1 billion in uncollected import duty due to smuggling and other criminal activities along the Limpopo River annually.

Chinguwo and Sithole’s arrest follows that of three others last week, who are accused of facilitating the smuggling of four tankers laden with 176 000 litres of unleaded petrol worth US$85 000 in import duty.

The duo, who are facing criminal abuse of office charges, have since appeared before Beitbridge Resident Magistrate, Mr Toyindepi Zhou.

Chinguwo, who is alleged to have released goods valued at $5,9 million and US$8 000 was remanded to December 24 on $30 000 bail. Sithole is accused releasing goods worth $160 000 and was remanded to same date on $20 000 bail.

The State, led by Mr Ronald Mugwagwa, alleges that an assortment of goods was seized at Beitbridge Border Post in June this year from various people for violating customs laws.

The goods were then locked in a State warehouse at Manica Transit Shed.

They were subject to release on conditions the owners paid import duty amounting to $6,2 million and US$8 000.

Mr Mugwagwa said between November 24 and December 3, Chinguwo released part of the goods attracting the import duty of $5,9 million to their owners, while Sithole released goods worth $160 000.

He said the matter came to light on December 3 when a senior Zimra official checked the records after coming across some of the owners leaving the State warehouse at Manica Transit Shed.

He discovered that the duo had tempered with records to cause the release of the said consignment.

The matter was then reported to the police leading to subsequent arrest of Chinguwo and Sithole.

Govt Warns Of More House Demolitions In Harare, Tells Owners To Approach Cooperative Leaders For Refunds

State Media

Tafadzwa Muguti

The thousands of home owners in Harare Metropolitan province who will be evicted and their houses demolished by the City of Harare after the rains under court orders already granted have been advised to approach leaders of their housing cooperatives to find their legal status or get their money back.

The advice was given by Harare Provincial Development Coordinator Mr Tafadzwa Muguti.

If householders believe they have a case that their buildings are legal, then they must appeal to the High Court, not the Local Government Ministry since the Government cannot override court orders.

Members of more than 20 housing cooperatives illegally selling residential stands in Harare face eviction and demolition after the High Court ruled in favour of City of Harare, and the city is now able as a result of the subsequent orders to repossess the land.

Most of those affected are on land without approved layout plans, no services, and usually on land where building is banned for environmental reasons or because the land is zoned for schools, recreation or other social purposes.

In a statement, Mr Muguti urged members of the affected housing cooperatives to approach their leaders for further management.

All residents and members of the stated housing cooperatives need to approach the leadership and the Registrar of Cooperatives to ascertain their legal standing, monetary contributions and any other payments made to date to their cooperatives as the land would be repossessed after evictions, said Mr Muguti.

“It must be noted that all housing cooperatives are required to have valid offer letters and site plans approved by authorities and therefore their legal status of occupation clearly defined.

“Those who feel that they have all their paperwork in place are free to appeal these judgments directly with the High Court and not the Ministry of Local Government and Public Works,” said Mr Muguti.

Mr Muguti encouraged people who wish to lodge complaints against housing cooperatives to approach the ministry offices.

The Cabinet resolved on Tuesday that the Government shall not interfere with court judgments and that demolitions can take place after the rainy season.

Recently, council demolished houses in Budiriro leaving 190 families stranded in the rain, hence the requested delay in implementing court orders until after the season is over.

Among those affected by the court orders permitting the council to evict and demolish are:

  • Houses at Stand 17401, Carlton Road Graniteside where council was at loggerheads with Shupukai Topodzi and Charles Nyatito;

*The Remainder of 2552 Crowbrough Township where Vatema Vatonga Housing Co-op operates;

  • Lot 2 of Parkridge Estate known as Paddock 27, Crowborough, where people were allocated stands under Takakura Housing Co-op, United We Stand Housing, Ideal Homes Housing, Bantu Housing, Igarwe Housing Co-op, Progot Housing Co-op, Greenland Housing Co-op, Home of Angels Housing, Excellent Stares Housing, Dzapasi Housing, Universal Housing Co-op, Lambano Housing Co-op, Chitepo Housing Co-op and Nyabira Housing Co-op;

*Stand 3973 Budiriro 2 and 41156 Mbare where Midzi and Zamuse lost their case against council face demolitions and Stands allocated by Events Housing Cooperative.

Taj Abdul Bail, The Long And Short Of It Is That The High Court Is Corrupt – State Media Claims

State Media

THE country justice delivery system has come under the spotlight following the suspicious granting of bail of a suspected armed robber Musa Taj Abdul, who despite having been on the run for more than 20 years, almost tasted freedom after the State consented to his application.

Although Abdul (47), along with his alleged accomplices Godfrey Mupamhanga (27), Rudolf Tapiwa Kamhanga (29) and Douglas Mutenda (31) were subsequently locked up, as they are facing fresh charges, fears abound that this could be a tip of the iceberg of corrupt syndicates in the justice delivery system where more criminals with lesser profiles are likely slipping under the radar and going scot-free.

The prosecutor Tapiwa Kasema, who consented to the granting of bail to the suspected robbers and then went into hiding, has since been arrested and is assisting police with investigations in a case insiders in the judiciary say could open a can of worms.

According to a report of armed robbery cases and warrants of arrests at the country’s courts, more than 50 suspected criminals were granted bail by the High Court from June to November, in what insiders say is a curious pattern that warrants spotlighting the whole justice delivery chain.

“There is a routine where a magistrate denies bail to a suspect and then that suspect appeals to the High Court and is then granted bail with the State consent and the judge does not do anything about that,” said a source.

While the Minister of Justice Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Ziyambi Ziyambi could not comment on the alleged pattern that is seemingly emerging of suspects getting bail easily, he said the case of Abdul raised a stink.

“This is a terrible case. Someone was on the run, he obviously has no fixed abode and he is given bail. That is unacceptable. Even though we respect their independence, there is no way a person who was on the run and was arrested during a shootout can then get bail. Even if they say the prosecutor did not oppose bail, the judge should have noticed this, this whole case raises eyebrows,” said Minister Ziyambi.

The acting secretary in the Judicial Service Commission (JSC) Ms Faith Mushure declined to comment on the matter but investigations previously carried by this publication reveal a pattern whereby lawyers and litigants are now shopping for a High Court station, sometimes preferring to go halfway across Zimbabwe from anyone connected with the case hoping for a favourable judgment.

Recently, some criminals seeking bail pending their appeals, who separately lost bail applications at the High Court in Bulawayo, quickly engaged new lawyers and misled the High Court in Harare into freeing them without disclosing their initial bail attempts.

Litigants and lawyers end up abusing the law, literally cherry-picking judicial officers who should handle their cases.

In some civil cases, a plaintiff who stays in Bulawayo together with the defendant, may for suspicious reasons, file summons at the High Court in Harare or Mutare.

Such leeway has fuelled corruption and is likely to defeat the spirit of decentralising the courts.

An investigation by The Herald revealed that three convicted persons were granted bail pending appeal by the High Court in Harare through misrepresentation to other courts.

Despite losing their bail applications in Bulawayo where they were convicted of their crimes, the convicts approached the High Court in Harare where they were treated as first-timers.

The High Court had to revoke their bail orders after staff at the Bulawayo Magistrates’ Court discovered the scandal when the relatives of the convicts were paying bail money.

Matthias Mutemabundo who was convicted of nine counts of theft and jailed 48 months at Bulawayo Magistrates Court (Tredgold) lost his initial bid for bail pending appeal at the High Court before fraudulently approaching the High Court in Harare where Justice Msithu freed him on bail.

Mutemabundo was being represented by Mr Simon Chabuka of Magaya-Mandizvidza Legal Practitioners.

It was never brought to the court’s attention that the convicted person had been denied by the same court, sitting in Bulawayo. Bail was revoked on December 13 last year.

In terms of the law, he could have appealed to the Supreme Court or filed an application for bail on changed circumstances.

In another bail scandal Norest Ushe, a Zimra official who was jailed in Bulawayo for over a vehicle importation scam involving criminal abuse of office, lost his bail application at the High Court in Bulawayo.

Without disclosing his first bail attempt, Ushe through Mr Admire Rubaya of Rubaya and Chatambudza Legal Practitioners, filed another bail application before Harare judge Justice Foroma who freed him on $5 000 bail.

It also later turned out that bail had been fraudulently granted, resulting in the Harare High Court revoking the bail order.

Jefat Chagadama who was also convicted of a criminal offence and jailed by a Bulawayo magistrate, had his application for bail pending appeal thrown out but approached the High Court in Harare where he was freed on $500 bail by Justice Tawanda Hebert Chitapi.

He was represented by Mr Oliver Marwa of Rubaya and Chatambudza Legal Practitioners.

Bail was revoked after it came to light that the convict had misled the court.

A mining dispute involving Border Timbers Limited (under judicial management) and Kuguta Kushinga Mining Syndicate was determined by Manicaland provincial mining director in Mutare on March 10 this year but the appeal, for unclear reasons, found its way to Masvingo High Court.

The Herald understands the case had been set down for hearing in Masvingo but the judge noticed the anomaly and referred the matter back to Mutare.

As From Saturday, Zimbabwean Women Are All Expected To Be Dressed The Same, Thanks To Mrs Auxilia Mnangagwa

State Media

Auxilia Mnangagwa

ZIMBABWE will tomorrow launch the National Dress of Zimbabwe, an initiative spearheaded by the First Lady Amai Auxillia Mnangagwa.

In a statement, Amai Mnangagwa said tomorrow the nation will witness an outcome of efforts made by different Zimbabweans in pursuit of having a national identity.

The statement was read on her behalf by Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Minister, Dr Sithembiso Nyoni, in Harare yesterday.

“On Saturday December 19, 2020, at 10am, we will witness an outcome of efforts made by different Zimbabweans in the quest to have a national identity, to come up with the designs for our national fabric.

Consultations with different sectors including Government Ministers, artistes, historians, traditional leaders, chiefs’ wives, researchers and academics took place.

“The role I played as First Lady of Zimbabwe was to ensure inclusivity that no ethnic or other groups were left behind. I am sure that after this, we will see academic gowns, chiefs and Parliament robes. The launch on Saturday will be a beginning, not an end.

“With creativity we have in our people, I know that improvements will continue to be made as this is an important symbol in the preservation of our values and cultural heritage, further creating unity among our people.”

The First Lady said she is glad that Zimbabwe will not be known or introduced by word of mouth alone, but also through a national attire.

She thanked designers who came all over the country to showcase their initiatives and skills.

“I want to thank them, some have spent sleepless nights in the selection of patterns, designs and eventually apparel. I also want to thank the Government of Zimbabwe, development partners and all other stakeholders.

“I would thank in particular, the Ministry of Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development for coordinating all these efforts,” she said.

The search for the national dress started in 2005, but did not yield any results, prompting Amai Mnangagwa to take it upon herself to ensure the programme succeeded.

Earlier this year, designers were then tasked to come up with a national dress whose features included the Zimbabwe Bird, chiffons and the flag that would be appropriate for all occasions and make people feel proudly Zimbabwean.

Prosecutor Tapiwa Kasema Arrested As Taj Abdul And Crew Are Also Sent Back To Prison

State Media

Taj Abdul And Crew going back to prison

PROSECUTOR Tapiwa Kasema, who is under investigation for consenting to bail for four armed robbers allegedly led by Musa Taj Abdul, was arrested yesterday morning and is in police custody pending his appearance in court for remand.

The four robbers were re-arrested before they could be released on bail and yesterday appeared in court on three fresh charges of armed robbery and were remanded in custody.

They will have to apply to the High Court in a new application.

Kasema was suspended from duty by Prosecutor-General Kumbirai Hodzi and could not be found for two days when police wished to question him, but surrendered himself at CID Headquarters in the company of his lawyer.

He was then arrested and is still assisting police with investigations conducted by the CID Police Anti-Corruption Unit (PACU).

Kasema is expected to appear in court soon.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, confirmed the arrest.

“We can confirm that Tapiwa Kasema has been arrested this (yesterday) morning. He surrendered himself at the CID while in the company of his lawyer. He is now in police custody and due processes of the law are now being followed,” he said.

Since Tuesday, officers from Harare Central Police Station, who were keen to question him as the investigation started, could not find him at his Glen View 3 home where his family professed ignorance over his whereabouts, nor at his mother’s house.

Sources close to the investigations yesterday said on Tuesday, Kasema had allegedly sent a text message to one of his colleagues at NPA, informing him that he had gone into hiding.

Kasema has been arrested before, in May last year on criminal abuse of office charges after he allegedly consented to the release of a passport belonging to former Cabinet minister Ignatius Chombo, who is facing a slew of corruption allegations.

Abdul (47) was on Monday granted bail by High Court judge, Justice Benjamin Chikowero, along with co-accused Godfrey Mupamhanga (27), Rudolf Tapiwa Kanhanga (29) and Douglas Mutenda (31), but before they could post bail money on Tuesday, police brought up fresh charges against them and requested that they remain in custody pending their remand hearing on the new charges and further investigations.

Yesterday, the four and four other accused appeared in court on three fresh charges arising from robberies in Bulawayo Bindura and Murambinda.

Taj Abdul, Liberty Mupamhanga, Prince Makodza, Godfrey Mupamhanga, Charles Lundu, Rudolf Kanhanga, Innocent Jairos and Tapiwa Mangoma were facing three counts of armed robbery when they appeared before Harare magistrate Mrs Vongai Guwuriro Muchuchuti.

Mrs Guwuriro remanded the gang in custody to December 30 and told them only the High Court can grant bail in robbery cases.

The State alleges that on July 23 the gang pounced on Andrew Murwisi at Murambinda growth point in Buhera armed with pistols and iron bars.

They allegedly forced their way into his supermarket, pointed a gun at him, demanded money and other valuables, and hit him with a metal bar before robbing him of cellphones, his pistol, US$5 000, R2000 and $5 000. They allegedly fired shots as they jumped into their vehicle and drove off.

“Tortoise” Prophet Forces Self On Teenager

A TEENAGE girl who was allegedly possessed with an evil spirit has been plunged into deeper trouble after a self-proclaimed prophet reportedly sexually attacked her before assigning a tortoise to suck her breast.

A resident from Pelandaba suburb, Thulani Sibanda, said the self-proclaimed prophet only known as Madzibaba Sadza visited the minor’s granny in Nyanga to exorcise her homestead.

“After exorcising the homestead Madzibaba Sadza convinced the granny that he could secure a job for her 17-year-old granddaughter. The granny agreed and he left with the minor to Nkayi to conduct another exorcism,” said a resident.

Sibanda went on to expose the sex offender’s shenanigans.

“On 12 December 2020 at around 4.30am, after a healing session he ordered his aide known as Madzibaba Mthembo to take the minor to a secluded room which was about 200 metres away from his bedroom hut. The unsuspecting minor went there. He (Madzibaba Sadza) followed them with a packet of chips and gave it to the minor. Madzibaba Mthembo left them in the room.

Madzibaba Sadza undressed and remained naked. He ordered the minor to undress. The minor initially refused but he threatened to stab her with a knife. The teenager unwillingly took off her clothes and he licked her private parts before raping her,” said Sibanda.

He added: “He sexually attacked the minor once again at around midday and once the following morning. He gave her a tortoise and said she should allow it to suck her breast so that she would make money. The minor said the tortoise sucked her during the night.”

On 13 December 2020 they left Nkayi for Bulawayo.

“They arrived at his lodgings in Pelandaba suburb and put up at his rented room where during the night he raped her and let his tortoise suck her breast and insisted that she must let it suck her and when they go to South Africa she would secure a well-paying job and get rich instantly,” said Sibanda.

The minor managed to escape after Madzibaba Sadza went to take a bath.

She narrated her ordeal to a neighbour who informed other residents.

“Unfortunately when we went to apprehend Madzibaba Sadza we found that he had fled. We then took the minor to Western Commonage police station and made a report,” said another resident who only identified herself as Khethiwe.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube said: “We are investigating a case of rape where a self-proclaimed prophet allegedly raped a minor several times and also assigned his tortoise to suck the minor’s breast for ritual purposes.

He added: “We are appealing to members of the public to seek understanding of how God’s services are done or provided. Normal and genuine services and prayers are conducted in church.”-B-Metro

IOM Launches Smart Agriculture Training for Migrant Returnees

HARARE- With funding from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) has launched the Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and nutritional garden training programme for migrant returnees. Developed and conducted by Foundations for Farming (FfF), the CSA nutritional garden trainings encompass all the principles of Conservation Agriculture (CA) and the FfF Implementation Principles to provide nutritious vegetables for families. The initiative will equip the targeted 1200 beneficiaries with a foundation for commercial vegetable production once they have met their own nutritional requirements and honed their skills as gardeners.

The COVID-19 pandemic has drastically affected Zimbabwe’s economy leaving many people unemployed, undernourished, displaced and vulnerable. Since the onset of the pandemic approximately 40 000 Zimbabweans were forced to return home with limited prospects and means to sustain themselves. From these, IOM in collaboration with the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare and Port Health, identified and registered beneficiaries to be part of this initiative.

The programme takes the form of practical and theoretical workshops that will enable participants to produce nutritious vegetables to feed a family from a 6m x 6m (36m²) garden. Beneficiaries are in turn provided with locally sourced kits with a range of vegetable seeds, gardening tools and fertilizer to allow them to apply their new knowledge in their home districts.

In the first week of December, the first 116 beneficiaries (68F, 48M) were trained and received the kits at Domboshawa Training Centre in Harare, and Mutare Dioceses Training Centre (MDCT) in Mutare. Speaking at a recent donor visit, CEO of Foundations for Farming Dr Matthew Mbanga said, “If adhered to, FfF’s four implementation principles: on time, at a high standard, without wastage and with joy, will ensure the participants’ success and will bring dignity to their families and communities.”

IOM Zimbabwe Chief of Mission, Mario Lito Malanca said, “The project not only promotes the livelihoods and dignity of returning migrants but also complements government efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger in Zimbabwe by 2030 as espoused in the National Development Strategy and various regional and international commitments for development and climate action.”-

Logarusic Drops 15 Players From Warriors CHAN Squad

WARRIORS coach Zdravko Logarusic has dropped 15 players from his provisional 34-man squad he initially called into camp a fortnight ago to prepare for the Chan finals.

The Dynamos duo of goalkeeper Simbarashe Chinani and Juan Mutudza and Caps United midfielder Ishmael Wadi are among the latest players who were dropped on Wednesday while Manica Diamonds’ Talent Chamboko is the latest new addition.

Logarusic has stated that he will use friendlies against Premier Soccer League clubs to identify players for his final Chan squad as they offer players that had been overlooked a chance to prove themselves.

The Warriors have so far played practise matches against Ngezi Platinum Stars, Yadah, Caps United and FC Platinum.

Zifa announced that the Warriors will face Dynamos today followed by a game against Bulawayo Chiefs tomorrow.

The Warriors will take on Herentals before taking a Christmas break.

This means Logarusic will continue to chop and change his personnel for as long as the Warriors play friendlies.

It is, however, the casual changing of the squad that has got football followers talking and the question is “did his assistant coaches recommend the wrong players or Logarusic is just giving others a chance”?

There is no doubt he relied heavily on his assistants Tonderai Ndiraya and Llyod Chitembwe to come up with the initial 34-man squad and the fact that almost half of it has been axed leaves too many question marks.

But it wouldn’t also be fair to suggest the changes indicate incompetence on the part of his assistants since there has been no competitive football in the country this year.

This can only mean the players were picked on the form of 2019 and most of them were bound to struggle to return to full fitness having gone for more than 12 months without action.

Clearly things would have been different had the topflight season seen the light of the day and Logarusic had watched and followed the form of players.

Previous national team selections have always ignited accusations and counter accusations of favouritism, and some people have welcomed Logarusic’s casual axing of players, saying it introduces some level of sanity to the highly contested selection process.

But whatever may be the case, one thing is certain, Logarusic does not have time on his side.-Soccer 24

Another Armed Robber Granted Bail

With prosecutor Tapiwa Kusena arrested yesterday for him to explain how he consented to granting robber Musa Taj Abdul bail, it has emerged how another notorious armed robber was released on bail under unclear circumstances this month.

Douglas Mutenda was recently released on $5 000 bail on four counts of armed robbery, including the much publicised one at Mashwede Towers where US$100 000 was stolen.

He is part of the gang that includes Musafare Mupamhanga, Godfrey Mupanhanga, Spicer Takawira, Carrington Marasha, Benjamin Chitunhu and Conwell Kasambarare, who were also freed on bail under questionable circumstances.

They were arrested on a spate of armed robberies and their cases are still pending before the courts. Through his legal representatives at TK Takaindisa Law Chambers, Mutenda applied for bail at the High Court on October 20 this year.

The State led by Mr Douglas Chesa opposed the application, saying the prosecution had a very strong case against him.

Mr Chesa, in his opposition papers, told the court that Mutenda led to recoveries of some of the stolen properties and there was a CCTV footage that showed him at the crime scene.

He said Mutenda’s accomplices implicated him and there were phone calls linking him to the offence, which left the prosecution with a very strong case against him.

High Court Judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi dismissed Mutenda’s bail application on grounds that he was likely to abscond and that he was facing a serious offence.

Barely a month after his bail application was dismissed at the High Court, Mutenda engaged a different lawyer and approached the same court, but went before a different judge.

Mutenda engaged lawyer Mrs Concilia Maheya, who made a fresh bail application under changed circumstances on December 8.

In the application, Mutenda argued that his co-accused, Musafare Mupanhanga, Spicer Takawira, Benjamin Chitunhu and Conwell Kasambarare, had been granted bail. He also argued that he had no pending cases as the State had alleged.

Mr Chesa responded to the fresh bail application on the same day consenting.

“The present application is based on changed circumstances, which the respondent (State) is of the view that they tilt the scales in favour of the applicant,” he said. “In the initial application, neither the then legal representative nor the investigating officer who gave oral evidence in court told the court that there were other accused persons who are facing the same charges, already on remand and are out on bail.

“The applicant (Mutenda) is linked to the commission of the offence through implication by his co-accused. He was arrested at his home and no recoveries were made from him. Further, no formal identification parade was conducted to allow the respective victims to finger the applicants as having been part of the gang that committed the offence. The only probable link being the CCTV coverage and call history of his cell phone.”

Mr Chesa said in his consent papers that issues of the CCTV and call history were to be tested and determined during trial.

He said there was need to have proof from the police on whether Mutenda was on the run or not, as there was no evidence presented before the court in that regard.

Justice Benjamin Chikowore, acting on Mr Chesa’s consent, granted Mutenda bail on December 9, a day after he made his application. –Herald

2021 First Term Begins On January 4- Government

He said that innovative alternative teaching and learning strategies were used for learners to catch-up and cover lost learning and teaching time during the lockdown.-Chronicle

Govt Announces It Will Demolish Homes In Predominantly MDC- Alliance Harare City

* Houses at Stand 17401, Carlton Road Graniteside where council was at loggerheads with Shupukai Topodzi and Charles Nyatito;

*The Remainder of 2552 Crowbrough Township where Vatema Vatonga Housing Co-op operates;

* Lot 2 of Parkridge Estate known as Paddock 27, Crowborough, where people were allocated stands under Takakura Housing Co-op, United We Stand Housing, Ideal Homes Housing, Bantu Housing, Igarwe Housing Co-op, Progot Housing Co-op, Greenland Housing Co-op, Home of Angels Housing, Excellent Stares Housing, Dzapasi Housing, Universal Housing Co-op, Lambano Housing Co-op, Chitepo Housing Co-op and Nyabira Housing Co-op;

*Stand 3973 Budiriro 2 and 41156 Mbare where Midzi and Zamuse lost their case against council face demolitions and Stands allocated by Events Housing Cooperative. -Herald

Chaos As O’ Level Candidates Miss Agriculture Paper

Some Ordinary Level students in Zimbabwe are alleged to have failed to write the Agriculture Paper One examination on Tuesday after a mix up on one of the timetables.

According to the master time-table, the Agriculture Paper One was scheduled for Tuesday, but the candidates’ statements of entry indicated the paper was set for January 15 2020.

Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) director Lazarus Nembaware admitted that there was an error but said no students missed the examination. He said:

The standard operating procedure is that if there is a conflict between what appears on the statement of entry, candidates should follow the timetable.

Candidates who wrote Agriculture started to go to their centres from the first of December so they were able to see the timetable at their centres.

So I will be very much surprised where a candidate says that they failed to write because I was reading my statement of entry and not the timetable.

Earlier this month there was another mix up on maps used in the Geography Paper One examination, but ZIMSEC maintains the problem was timeously rectified. Said Nembaware:

Schools that discovered that there were no maps for the Geography examination earlier communicated and they were supplied.

For those who realized it on the day of the examination, they did one of the following; they allowed the examination to continue while the maps were being given to them by our ZIMSEC regional managers or they quarantined the students if the time was over, waiting for the maps to come.

My report from all regions shows that every candidate who registered for the examination wrote it.

Minister Who Notoriously Mingled With Mutsvangwa’s Wife Partying Past Midnight Deploys Police To Arrest Anyone Found Partying.

Kazembe Kazembe in a squeeze with Monica Mutsvangwa at midnight hours after delegates of Bulawayo Arts Awards were stormed into by police officers at 9pm.
Kazembe Kazembe

The minister who was caught on camera rubbing himself against Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa’s body, while partying into midnight at her birthday gig, Kazembe Kazembe has announced a ban against parties.

Those planning Christmas and New Year parties have been reminded that all parties and other social gatherings remain banned under Covid-19 safety measures, and those engaging in the activities will be arrested and face the law, he said.

Police are being deployed to ensure compliance. Under the regulations, birthday and house parties, political and other social gatherings including musical concerts, are banned countrywide.

There is also need to stick to regulations on public gatherings, which are restricted to a maximum of 100 people or less at church gatherings, 50 or less people at funerals, and low risk sports.

Church leaders were recently warned against hosting or convening all-night prayers. Nightclubs, bars, beer halls and casinos are still closed under Covid-19 regulations.

In an interview on the sidelines of the launch of the 2020 Zimbabwe National Roads Administration (zinara), Zimbabwe Republic Police and Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ) festive season campaigns in Harare on Wednesday, Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister, Kazembe Kazembe, said: “Generally, parties are not permissible, but church services and weddings are permissible, but again they have to make sure that people are not more than 100. And in such cases we should observe social distancing and we should wear our masks.

“And again, we want to emphasise that these restrictions are not meant to cause discomfort, but as you can see, the numbers (of Covid-19 cases) have started rising again. So it is in the interests of us as citizens to ensure that we observe these regulations. We have done good so far as Zimbabwe and we are ranked highly in terms of prevention of Covid-19. Let’s maintain that and continuously observe the restrictions.”

In a statement, Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister Minister Matiza warned the public against boarding non-Zupco registered kombis and buses as such vehicles will be impounded for violating lockdown regulations.

Those boarding public transport should adhere to all Covid-19 guidelines on sanitisation and social distancing, among other measures to curb the pandemic.

“Following the Cabinet directive and approval of inter-city movement, the Road Motor Transportation started issuing Covid-19 Free compliance certificates. These are issued to compliant buses after an inspection by VID and in accordance with the given standard operating procedure. These certificates are signed by the Commissioner of Road Motor Transportation.

“For ease of business, the same process has been decentralised and now being done in Chinhoyi, Bulawayo, Mutare, Gweru and Masvingo where deputy commissioners will sign and issue a compliance certificate. More such offices will be opened in other provincial capitals soon,” he said.

Dr Matiza appealed to operators contracted under Zupco, plus taxi owners, tour operators and those transporting inter-city passengers to renew their operator’s licences and route authorities as required by law.

“That process will rest assure the nation that competent and well-trained drivers submitted in the schedule of drivers will be the ones in charge of the buses and hence minimising the chances of human error. The renewal process will also force the applicant to take their vehicles for a certificate of roadworthiness and obtain passenger liability.

“Being contracted to operate under the Zupco banner is not a passport for reckless driving. Government has noticed that some drivers of buses contracted to operate under Zupco banner are not sticking to road rules. I call upon the owners and drivers of these buses to take into considerate steps in ensuring safety of the passengers and the travelling public,” said Dr Matiza.

He warned operators against violating the curfew by travelling at night. The curfew runs from 10pm and 6am.  Recently, owners of 1 400 bars and nightclubs around Harare were arrested on allegations of disregarding national lockdown regulations. Herald/additional reporting

Coronavirus Hits Chibi High School

Tinashe Sambiri|Government is exposing teachers and pupils to the deadly COVID-19 pandemic due to lack of proper safety measures in schools.

According to Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe president, Dr Takavafira Zhou, latest COVID -19 cases have been recorded at Dangamvura Primary School in Mutare and Chibi High School in Masvingo Province.

Read Dr Zhou’s statement below:

Dangamvura Primary (Mutare) and Chibi High School (Masvingo): Latest Covid 19 Cases

17 December 2020

Cases of Covid 19 have been reported at Dangamvura Primary in Mutare, with several teachers and pupils testing positive at Chibi High School in Masvingo Province yesterday, while many more are waiting for results today.

With several students showing signs that resonate with covid 19, it would be prudent to test all the students at Chibi High rather than allow them to leave the school and infect their family members.

Covid 19 has run riot in several boarding schools possibly because students are overcrowded in hostels, share textbooks, and lack of social distancing due to limited infrasture, bloated classes and absence of social distance.

Chibi High is the latest school to be affected but many more boarding schools are in similar predicament but teachers and pupils have not been tested due to shortage of testing kits.

Latest On Councillor Mutubuki Trial

Court Update

17 December 2020
11:40 am

Masvingo Youth Assembly In Solidarity

Masvingo Provincial Youth Secretary and Councillor for Chiredzi Town Council Gilbert Mutubuki appeared before Triangle Magistrate Court this morning.

The case was represented by vibrant human rights Lawyer Advocate Mureri . Magistrate Chikodzore further postponed the continuation of trial to 23 December. The reason cited was that one of the witnesses couldn’t understand Shona, but Shangani only, a questionable reason that may give us much doubt and pessimism on Zimbabwean Court’s fairness and competence.

The court officials said they would wait for 23 December inorder to bring an interpreter.

It is also questionable that the courts knowing very much that they are surrounded mostly by the Shangani/Tsonga people in the area they don’t have a readily available interpreter. The postponement is meant for nothing but to persecute the accused and henceforth potrays how the judiciary and the prosecuting authority is captured by the Zanupf regime.

The Case has also been moved to Chiredzi Magistrate Courts from Triangle.

The delay in trial is further denying Councillor Mutubuki his freedom of movement and peace of mind.

Like anyone else during festive season one might want to travel or he might also want to commit himself to other programs upon his authority as a Councillor and Provincial Youth Secretary.

It is from this act of the judiciary that bias and capture is foreseen.

Chiredzi west Youth Chair Lenny together with other Chiredzi leaders attended the court. As supportive as they are Councillor Mutubuki ‘s Parents and family members also attended in solidarity . Meanwhile as MDC Alliance Youth we shall not retreat to support our fellow leader.

Persecution Of MDC Alliance Trio Unacceptable

By Stephen Sarkozy Chuma

17-12-2020

It is now exactly eight months since that horrible afternoon when the trio of our female youth leaders were abducted by state agents.

Today, the 17th of December, Youth Assembly National Vice Chairperson Cecilia Chimbiri (Cde Chauya Chauya), Policy and Research Secretary Hon Joana Mamombe (Cde Madikizela) and Deputy Organizer Netsai Marova (Cde Kanjiva) still find themselves being moved from one court room to another in what has become a systematic persecution by prosecution by Emmerson Mnangagwa’s fascist regime.

We all know that the cooked up case that the trio faked their own abduction is a desperate attempt and undiluted lies to diffuse international condemnation facing Mnangagwa’s regime when it comes to human rights issues.

It is very crystal clear that the state’s continued persecution of the trio is bent on sanitization of the image of regime which has been hugely soiled by the abduction case.

What is sad and regrettable is that the same regime that must account for the abduction and torture of the trio is now using persecution by prosecution to save its face from regional and international flak.

Mnangagwa knows very well that his regime has become an anathema to the community of nations due to its unfathomable penchant for human rights abuses.

The trio’s trumped up case is now at the point of trial. Cde Chauya Chauya, Cde Madikizela and Cde Kanjiva’s trial was supposed to commence today.

Meanwhile the trio have been remanded to 22 January 2021.

If we are all in agreement that our girls are innocent, it will be prudent to come out in numbers in solidarity especially in a month in which we commemorate 16 Days against Gender Based Violence.

Silence at this juncture when our young females are facing unjustified persecution is betrayal.

Joana, Cecilia and Netsai deserve justice and not persecution!

Man In Court For Assaulting Cops

A VICTORIA Falls man who allegedly became violent at a fuel garage and assaulted two cops as he resisted arrest has appeared in court.

Constables Prosper Zingi and Nollen Mhanga of Victoria Falls Police Station had been deployed at Marange Fuel Service Station to control a fuel queue and enforce social distancing.

Tinashe Macharaga (30) allegedly jumped the queue and pushed his vehicle towards the pump resulting in the two police officers ordering him to remove his car.

Macharaga allegedly became violent.

He allegedly grabbed a pair of handcuffs that the officers tried to put on his hands before kicking both officers.

The trio tussled and the cops managed to subdue and arrest Macharaga.

He pleaded not guilty to assaulting a peace officer when he appeared before Victoria Falls Resident magistrate Ms Lindiwe Maphosa who remanded him out of custody to today for continuation of trial.

He claimed that Constables Zingi and Mhanga assaulted him and forced him to move his car from the queue.

“I was at Marange Fuel Service station where I had left my car in the queue the previous evening. I went back in the morning for fueling and when it was my turn, I pushed my car towards the pump and that is when the police officers came and said I should remove my car from the queue,” said Macharaga.

He said he was treated at the hospital as a result of the assault.

Constables Zingi and Mhanga said they were deployed to maintain order at the fuel service station when Macharaga became violent towards them.

“He started shouting at me and my colleague when we told him to move his car. He accused us of being corrupt saying we wanted to create space for our friends to refuel ahead of him. We told him that he was disturbing the peace but he said he wasn’t afraid of police as he had a relative who is our boss at police headquarters. I grabbed his hand to arrest him and he grabbed the handcuffs,” said Constable Mhanga.

Prosecuting, Mr Listen Nare said Macharaga became unreasonably violent and disorderly after being told to move his car from the queue.-Chronicle

Matanga Ordered To Compensate Boy Who Was Assaulted By Cop

The Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) has obtained a court order compelling a Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) official Jefinias Mazambani, Police Commissioner-General Godwin Matanga and Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe to pay ZWL$151 000 as compensation to an assault victim.

According to a statement by ZLHR, Mazambani brutally assaulted a 15-year-old boy in 2019 while he was investigating the theft of a mobile phone handset in Mutare’s high-density suburb of Sakubva.

The 15-year-old minor bled profusely as a result of the assault by Mazambani.

The boy was released from police custody without being charged. But despite being released from police custody without any charges pressed against him, police officers continued making impromptu visits to the juvenile’s residence and continued assaulting him.

The minor sustained injuries which include a perforated eardrum, facial swelling and swelling on his knees.

The minor’s parents engaged Peggy Tavagadza of the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, who sued ZRP for inhuman and degrading treatment after he was handcuffed and assaulted by Mazambani.

In his judgment, Mutare Resident Magistrate Lazarus Murendo ruled that the assault of the minor by Mazambani was severe and he suffered excruciating pain hence he should be paid damages amounting to ZWL$151 191 as compensation.

Relatives Of Trapped Miners Sue Mnangagwa

Emmerson Mnangagwa has been dragged to court by the families of artisanal miners trapped underground after Esigodini mine collapsed.

The families want the president to declare the collapse a national disaster to cause the abandoned rescue operations to resume.

In an urgent chamber application filed at the Bulawayo High Court on Monday, Patience Ncube, mother to one of the trapped miners Nkosilathi, appealed for an order directing Mnangagwa and government agencies to implement an emergency rescue operation.

Reads in part the application filed on behalf of the family by its lawyers Mathonsi Ncube Law Chambers:

That the 5th respondent declares Matshetshe Mine collapse a disaster within the meaning of section 27 of the Civil Protection Unit Act.

That the provincial civil protection officer Matabeleland South province must within 48 hours of this order direct the 4th respondent within his area to prepare an emergency plan for the rescue/evacuation of the trapped miners or their bodies.

The mine collapsed on 10 November due to flash floods and the rescue operations have since been suspended after government chief mining engineer, Michael Munodawafa said it was too risky.

Munodawafa said it would take over a year of continuous work before any success was achieved as the area “is characterised by friable ground, loose rock material and debris posing the danger for further collapse.”

The six artisanal miners who were trapped underground were identified as Nkosilathi Ndlovu (29), Christopher Dube (23), Ndumiso Dube (19), Blessed Ncube (24), Nduduzo Ntini (28) and another only identified as Mlilo.

The families of the trapped miners said the rescue mission was important for “us as families to find closure in this issue and possibly be allowed to do traditional family rites.”-NewsDay

Soldiers Assault Duo Praying On A Mountain

By A Correspondent- On 13 December, Takudzwanashe Mudenga and Perfect Khumalo went to a mountain at the Resthaven Christian Retreat and Conference Centre to pray.

assaulyed man

The mountain that is popularly known as ‘prayer mountain’ is located next to Harare Quarry an area where there is gold mining.

Takudzwanashe Mudenga who narrated the unfortunate incident on his Facebook page said when they arrived on the mountain top and prepared to read the bible three soldiers emerged from the bushes.

“As usual, we were talking about Jesus and everything that we wanted to pray for as we meandered our way up to the hilltop. Upon arrival, I grabbed my phone and started swiping sideways looking for the Bible app to read a few scriptures and encourage each other before we started praying.

“Unexpectedly, I heard the breaking of twigs as three uniformed soldiers emerged from behind the bushes. The formation with which they were advancing towards us told me something was off. One of them was swinging sparkly handcuffs in his hand, while the second one was busy unwinding a rubber sjambok and the third military officer was not armed, Mudenga wrote on his Facebook page.

One of the soldiers then asked the two boys what they were doing on the mountain top and why they chose that particular spot.

When the two responded that they were on the mountain to pray the soldiers then ordered them to sit down and empty their pockets.

“…‘Hello, boys, what are you doing here?’ One of the soldiers inquired. ‘We are here to pray, Sir,’ I responded. ‘Why here?’

He asked. ‘

Because it’s a convenient place without noise or other disturbances’,” I fearlessly replied.

“Come, sit here!” The soldier holding a sjambok yelled. Like sheep, we hoisted ourselves down to the spot he had designated. Suddenly, we were ordered to empty our pockets and put our cellphones away from us. “Manje, chibvisai hembe murare pasi makabatana uye makatarisa pasi!” [Now, remove your shirts and lay face down close to each other!] He snarled again.

Takudzwanashe Mudenga said the soldiers started torturing them with a whip beating them mercilessly telling them that it was their turn to die for Christ.

“Jesus died for you and it’s now time to die for him,” the officer continued. “Say, Jesus, I am dying for you!” We recurrently repeated his words as the whip went up and down our naked backs. Seeing their determination, it reminded me of how the Pharisees mercilessly tortured the character of Jesus as portrayed in the passion play.

“We squirmed, screamed and groaned but our voices could not be heard anymore. These men were certainly on a mission to kill and to destroy. The whips could be felt smacking and shaking the ribs. “Your Jesus got you in trouble, today,” they repeatedly said those words and two soldiers took turns on us, he said.

The three soldiers then threatened to push Takudzwanashe and Perfect down the edge of a cliff before they abandoned that plan and frog-marched them down the hill.

Takudzwanashe remembers thinking that he was about to die at the hands of the soldiers.

“All I wanted was to call my brother say, “Bye, we had a good time on earth. Remain in Christ.” But probably in the hands of the men who were trained to kill, I was not going to have that chance. I kept on asking myself, “What kind of Zimbabwe was this?”

When they arrived at the foot of the hill the two men were given another thorough bashing this time around they were naked.

“At the foot of the hill, there was a huge rock on which we were told to lay face down again. However, were had to remove all our clothes now. They began assaulting us as if nothing ever happened on the summit of the hill.

“Amid all this, I didn’t need to be reminded anymore who Jesus was, but I willfully shouted, “Jesus, you are the king!” Now the whip was landing on any part of the body open for business. I remember checking Perfect lying by my side only to see his head squashed under a soldier’s boot. It was horrendous! He cried as the sjambok ripped open his skin. Nothing could make him feel better except seeing the whip back on my bums. That was the only moment of relief.

The three soldiers continued beating and torturing the two men as they lay on the ground and were later released battered and bruised.

“You guys have been enjoying the show without me, it’s my turn now,” the officer watching the parameter said as he seized the sjambok. “I am going to whip them, then we go. You, how many whips do you want?” The question was directed to me. “I don’t know, Sir,” I replied. “No, give me a number!” He howled. “Two,” I answered. “Good. Two multiplied by two twice gives eight, boss,” the other soldier shouted. Perfect having noticed the trap I had just plunged myself into, he quickly said his figure was three. They all roared in laughter as they shout, “Fifteen” simultaneously.

“The two-striped officer whipped me twice and Perfect thrice like we had agreed but the other two objected our dismissal. Therefore, took over and battered us like stubborn oxen beneath the yoke. Then the words we dearly wanted to hear came out. “Wear your clothes and run!” I swiftly pulled my trousers up, grabbed my belongings and dizzily followed the path leading to where Perfect went.” Takudzwanashe said.

The two victims filed a report at Braeside police station.

ZimSec Says No Student Missed Their Agriculture Exam

By A Correspondent- Some Ordinary Level students in Zimbabwe are alleged to have failed to write the Agriculture Paper One examination on Tuesday after a mix up on one of the timetables.

He saidThe standard operating procedure is that if there is a conflict between what appears on the statement of entry, candidates should follow the timetable.

Mentally Challenged Man Hacks Another Mentally Challenged Man

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says people with relatives suffering from mental illness should always keep an eye on them and also make sure that they receive their medication.

This comes after a 25-year-old mentally challenged Nkayi man axed to death another mental patient on the neck without provocation.

National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said: Members of the public with relatives suffering from mental illnesses are advised to monitor them and ensure that they receive medical attention.

This follows a murder case where a 23-year-old male adult was struck with an axe by a mentally challenged man (25) in Nkayi district.

On [Tuesday] the suspect entered the room where the victim and his brother who is also mentally ill were sleeping and struck the victim once on the neck with an axe and went away.

The suspect is still at large and investigations are underway.

Earlier this month a Grade 7 female pupil was stoned to death by a mentally sick patient in Gweru.

The girl was on her way from Sandara Primary School where she had just written an examination.

MDC Alliance Youth Assembly Condemns Conviction Of Midlands Youth Assembly Leaders

17-12-2020

MDC Alliance Youth Assembly is shocked by the gross miscarriage of justice that has seen our Midlands youth leaders convicted on trumped up charges today in Kwekwe.

Those convicted are:

(1)Provincial youth chair Sekai Mchaina Marashe
(2) Cllr Melody Chingarande
(3) cllr Washington Moyo
(4) Lovemore Savanhu
(5) Tinashe Nyamushosho and
(6) Leonard Musemwa.

The 6 were convicted under a spurious charge that they participated in what the state terms “unlawful demonstration” in Mbizo sometime in March 2020.

Judgement for the six will be handed down tomorrow, 18-12-2020.

What is unmistakable is that our judiciary is no longer independent and takes orders directly from ZANU PF headquarters.

Fingerprints of State Security Minister, Owen Mudha Ncube’s hand in the conviction of our Midlands youth leaders are all the wall for everyone to see.

The move is meant to derail the MDC Alliance ahead of a by-election pitting Owen Ncube’s nephew who is also running for the vacant Kwekwe Central House of Assembly post.

Ironically a ZANU PF violent Kwekwe thug, Tapiwa Muto who disrupted the party’s DCC elections was controversially released from prison just days after his arrest only two weeks ago.

Let it be known that the unjustified conviction of our Midlands cdes is a declaration of war to the Assembly and all progressive youths.

We are not going to rest when our members are subjected to Micky mouse justice at the instruction of ZANU PF officials.

We demand freedom for our innocent cadres!

Prince Dube Starts Light Training After Undergoing Operation

Prince Dube has started light training after undergoing a successful operation on his hand in South Africa early this month.

The Azam striker hurt his left hand’s ulnar muscle during his side’s 1-0 defeat by Young Africans in the Tanzanian Premier League in late November.

Speaking to the Chronicle, the 23-year old said he expects to return to full fitness around mid-January.

“I’m feeling much better now after successful surgery,” said Dube. “I returned here in Tanzania last week and have since started doing some light gym workouts concentrating on the lower part of my body.

“I’m set to bounce back to full action in mid-January and it’s really sad that I picked up an injury at a time I had proved to be doing well for my new club.”-Soccer 24

We Played Better Than Liverpool – Mourinho

Tottenham coach Jose Mourinho believes his team put a better performance despite Liverpool dominating the match and went on to win it 2-1.

Roberto Firmino’s 90th-minute header secured the victory after Heung-Min Son had cancelled out Mohamed Salah’s first-half opener.

The Reds enjoyed 76 per cent possession and created more opportunities, but Spurs had the best chances coming on their way.

After the final whistle, Mourinho approached Klopp, and the two were seen exchanging words in disagreement.

The Spurs boss later revealed at his post-match presser that he was telling the German that his side was better than Liverpool.

“The best team lost, and he disagreed, but that’s his opinion,” said Mourinho as he also criticised Klopp’s touchline behaviour.

“If I behave like he does on the touchline, I have no chance to stay there, and I am out one minute after.

“Or do you want me to take the table with the time from the fourth official’s hands to see what happens to me? I am saying for some reason I am different, and that’s sad.”

The defeat was Spurs’ second of the season – and first since the opening day against Everton – and they now trail the champions by three points having gone into the top-of-the-table showdown ahead on goal difference.-Soccer 24

How Government Is Exposing Teachers, Pupils To Coronavirus

Chitungwiza Mayor Ordered to Withdraw Full Council Resolution or Face Victimisation

By A Correspondent| The recently appointed Provincial Development Co-ordinanator, Tafadzwa Muguti, has threatened Chitungwiza Mayor Lovemore Maiko with stern action if he fails to meet the 72-hour ultimatum to reverse an “offensive” council resolution.

The resolution, passed on December 3, appointed Engineer D Duma as the Acting Town Cleck, replacing one Mrs E Machona.

Failure to effect a reversal of the appointment, according to Muguti, would see councillors Peter Clever Matiringe, Chengetai Nyagondo, Richard Chamisa and Tonderai Chiwanza arrested and arraigned before the courts.

The charges, under which the dismissals would be premised, are not clear except that the allegations against Councillor Maringe have to do with chairing a meeting that approved the offending resolution.

It is further alleged that Councillor Matiringe refused to read a letter that was directed to the Town Cleck, saying it would be read under the Town Cleck’s desk.

This publication also understands that the said councillor sat on the mayoral chair without following the Urban Councils Act which requires that councillors choose a representative to chair a meeting in the event that both the mayor and his deputy are absent.

This, however, was not the case.

According to the Urban Councils Act, section 104 (3)(4), all due process was not followed.

Councillor Matiringe is now facing a litany of charges, including that of drafting a letter advising the PDC of the developments which took place on December 3 and another in which he is said to have written to Mrs Machona seeking to know why she had issued a Press statement purporting to be the Acting Town Clerk.

The other charges, however, are not clear.

Meanwhile, councillors Nyagondo and Chiwanza are said to have violated their bail conditions while Councillor Chamutsa’s “crime” is that of seconding Councillor Nyagondo’s proposal.

These councillors have been threatened with suspension should they fail to ensure that the 72-hour ultimatum is meet.

One of the conditions under which the ultimatum is premised includes the
reversal of a resolution made on December 3 to reinstate Mrs Machona.

The other resolution includes the listing of all illegal sites for demolition, including the setting up of a special committee by councillors to investigate those councillors alleged to be working in cahoots with some land barons.

The councillors being charged have also been asked to Identify the staffers who are leaking information to outsiders, including that they should work towards clearing the PDC’s name from mudslinging.

The ultimatum should be responded to by December 18, failure of which would lead to the four councillors facing the music.

What is confusing, though, is that in the past five months, teams from the municipality, Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission and Local Government ministry have been probing without success the Chitungwiza Municipality on issues of corruption.

Daring Man Bashes ZRP Cops

Eight Months On: MDC Alliance Youth Assembly Trio Still Under Incessant Persecution…

Since 2017, IOM and its network of CSO partners have been working to strengthen the capacity of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission in monitoring and advocating for rights of at-risk populations.

#BREAKING- Christmas In Prison For Harare Mayor Jacob Mafume

By A Correspondent- A Harare magistrate Mr Ngoni Nduna on Thursday denied bail to Harare mayor Jacob Mafume.

Mafume is facing charges of obstruction of course of justice or alternatively contempt of court after he allegedly interfered with a key witness, Edgar Dzehonye, in another matter where he is facing criminal abuse of office.

In his ruling Mr Nduna said no condition was going to deter the accused from interfering with witnesses.

“It is clear that condition of not interfering with witnesses was not going to be nuetralised by any condition and that calls for the accused to be put in prison. Therefore bail is refused.”

Mr Nduna deferred the matter to January 28 2021.

Mafume Denied Bail

Harare mayor councillor Jacob Mafume has been denied bail on allegations of contempt of court.

Harare magistrate Ngoni Nduna said there was no other condition that the court could impose to stop Mafume from interfering with witnesses, as he allegedly did, except imprisonment.

Police Officer Jailed For Assaulting Minor

By A Correspondent- A Mutare based police officer, Jefinias Mazambani was yesterday convicted of assaulting a 15-year old boy and will spend the next six months in jail.

Muzambani was convicted by Magistrate Tendai Mahwe after full trial.

The minor, represented by Peggy Tavagadza of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, was brutally assaulted last year by the police officer when he was investigating a phone theft case in Mutare’s Sakubva suburb.

The police detail was found guilty of the two counts of assault and sentenced to three months in prison for each count or to pay a fine of $2 000 for each count.

The boy has also filed for delictual damages in the sum of $250 000 at Mutare Magistrate Court for the pain and trauma he suffered as a result of the assault by the police officer.

Tavagadza said the boy was subjected to inhuman-treatment. The minor sustained injuries which include a perforated eardrum, facial swelling and swelling on his knees.

“The plaintiff is a minor child of a relatively tender age. He is thus more sensitive to pain than the ordinary person,” Tavagadza submitted.

“The 15-year-old boy was released from police custody without being charged.

Despite being released from police custody without any charge, Tavagadza said Mazambani continued to make impromptu visits to the juvenile’s residence thereby subjecting the minor to torture.-newsday

Corruption Escalates At Registry Officers

By A Correspondent- Allegations of corruption and bribery have resurfaced at some of the country’s registry offices with clients, especially those intending to collect their passports being forced to pay bribes to get travel documents in time.

This emerged during a survey done by the Southern Eye in Bulawayo at the registry offices where clients revealed that officials were demanding bribes for them to be assisted.

Indications were that Registrar-General officials would receive cash from desperate clients intending to collect passports in order for the process to be quickened.

“I came here last week to collect my son’s passport but the officers were dilly-dallying,” said a concerned client, who only identified herself as Judith.

“I asked one of the officials to be fast since I was in a hurry.

“He demanded R200 from me so that it is done without delay. I did likewise because I had no choice.”

Another client Calister Jana said he bribed one of the officials in order to collect her passport.

“I collected my passport two weeks ago. I bribed one of the passport officials with R100 in order for me to collect the passport without any delay,” said Jana.

It is alleged that the officials delay the process of passport collection in order to frustrate clients so that they pay bribes.

“The process of passport collection is time consuming and they put the blame on COVID-19 but their intention is mainly to get bribes from us,” a client, who only identified himself as Xolani, said.

Last month, touts had resumed operating outside Bulawayo Passport Offices and claim to be working with registry officials to facilitate the processing of passports.

The Registrar-General’s office partially opened in November after it was closed in March due to COVID-19 lockdown.

The office limits the number of clients served per day to about 25-30 to adhere to COVID-19 prevention measures.

It is alleged that touts join the queue in the wee hours of the morning in order to sell their positions to desperate applicants at R150 each.

“I came here around 5am and many people were in the queue.

“Around 7am, one of the touts came to me and said he was selling his spot in the front for R150,” said one Nobuhle.

Bulawayo provincial registrar, Jane Peters declined to entertain questions.

“The journalist must carry on with his investigation,” said Peters through her personal assistant.

During his recent visit to Bulawayo, Home Affairs minister Kazembe Kazembe said the registry office had taken advantage of the COVID-19 pandemic to reduce the passport backlog.

ED Silences Zanu Pf Stalwarts

By A Correspondent- President Mnangagwa yesterday gagged Zanu-PF members from discussing party issues in both mainstream and social media following the chaos that rocked the DCC elections.

Addressing a politburo meeting, Mnangagwa also gave hope to some defeated party bigwigs, whom he said deserved to have their grievances heard. He is also set to have a meeting with the security department as he seeks to end the DCC fallout.

Mnangagwa said the DCC elections were meant to unite the party rather than cause divisions.

Zanu-PF secretary for security said that the chaos that characterised the elections had been engineered by remnants of he G40 and Gamatox factions as they continued to attempt to weave their way back into the party.

No Joy For Party Lovers As Govt Bans Christmas Parties

By A Correspondent- The government of Zimbabwe has banned Christmas parties as a precaution against the coronavirus crisis.

Thiswas revealed by Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Minister Kazembe Kazembe who said government was prohibiting any form of partying during the 2020 festive season as Zimbabwe is not yet out of the Covid-19 pandemic risk.

Speaking at the official launch of the 2020 Festive Season Awareness Campaign at a joint press conference on Wednesday, Minister Kazembe Kazembe Kazembe revealed that due to the global pandemic Covid-19 Christmas parties will be prohibited.

“We are not yet out of the Covid-19 woes but the country is in the second wave of the virus. Parties will not be permissible during the festive season,” he said.

“However, weddings will be allowed but still with limited numbers. Police will be out in full force to enforce Covid-19 regulations and to make sure that they are being followed,” he said.

Minister Kazembe Kazembe also urged the public to put in place adequate measures to ensure that their homes and business properties are secured properly to avoid falling prey to criminals during this festive season.

During the festive season, there is likely to be an increase in cases of unlawful entry and theft as people may leave their business premises and houses to travel to various destinations.

“In addition, let me also remind everyone to be security conscious and not to leave their property unattended as criminals may take advantage of the festivities to perpetrate crime in its various forms,” he said.

“What Zanu Pf Would Do As An Opposition”: PART 1

By Robert Sigauke- It was at the funeral gathering of the late MDC Alliance MP, Anna Muyambo (MHSRIP) where Job Sikhala noted that the MDC Alliance, despite its so called huge following and popularity, will still be eluded by power if they do not unlock the formula of translating this so called huge popularity to political power.

This was the most profound statement we have heard from an opposition politician in a long while.

The Alliance has been in a whirlwind since the assault on its legitimacy by Khupe and her group. The situation was further driven into doldrums by the Alliance leader not providing direction or counter action, further plunging the mainstream opposition into uncertainty. The mass dismissals of its MPs and councillors did not move Chamisa, he preferred to keep quiet and watch from the sidelines like all of us.

To this day, Chamisa argues that in itself his silence was a strategy, although we all still wonder the effectiveness thereof and we are yet to see the profit seeing that Mwonzora and Khupe have been intentional, decisive and combative, effectively taking charge and directing the course.

The Alliance was reduced to a group of spectators and victims of each of Khupe’s whim and whip, pick and kick. It is very true that Khupe has neither clout nor distance to last, but the best she has proven is that the Alliance is a cocktail of sheepish loudmouths with likewise numbers behind them.

The Courts in Zimbabwe are not captured, the honourable men and women of the bench serve what is on the menu, they decide what is brought before them. For one, I personally argued that the appointment of Mudzuri and Chamisa as Vice Presidents was unconstitutional, nobody listened.

For second, in blatant disregard of the party constitution, Chamisa rode on mourners to usurp the party presidency before Tsvangirai (MHSRIP) was put to rest in Humanikwa village of Buhera. For third, in the court fights against Mwonzora, the sheepish Harare lawyers argued that the Alliance was a political party despite the clear provisions of the Alliance document before them.

Also, Chin’ono and Ngarivhume incited 31 July demonstrations at the height of the pandemic, in condemnation and exposure of thousands of poor Harare residents to Covid-19, in full glare of the incapacity of hospitals, secondly in violation of the law, yet the same Harare lawyers claim Chin’ono had no case to answer! How empty and wily they are.

The madness does not end there. After appealing the High Court ruling that declared Khupe as the legitimate leader of the MDC-T, the Alliance argued that the ruling does not apply to them, which motion they themselves had brought on appeal before the Supreme Court in the first place. The public relations apparatus of the Alliance had really gone nuts.

Even if the ruling party is to be kicked out of office in the next elections, which I do not see happening though, there is no doubt they will be an effective opposition with real and clear chances of unseating whichever government would have occupied office.

What is it that Zanu PF would do as an opposition that the MDC Alliance is not doing?

Development real solutions NOT meal collusions

In the towns they govern, the opposition only colludes in meal deals, but the management of public programmes and utilities is in tatters from Bulawayo to Harare. The land reform programme, farm mechanisation initiative, indigenisation programme in the modes of production, farm inputs programme;

These are but some of the developmental programmes the ruling party embarked on in order to cushion and restore the dignity of our people. Being a mixed economy, heavily dependent on natural resources, it is by no mistake nor favour that the agro-programmes receive the most attention from a Zanu PF government.

Therefore, township folks must not lose this fact to reason. Zanu PF as an opposition will support farmers and communities whose sustenance is anchored on natural resources, whilst the Alliance loots the small coffers entrusted to them.

Be a real party, NOT a tea party

From unending splits to the betrayal of the very ethos they allege to have been founded on, the MDC and its thousands of formations have shown the Zimbabwean people that it is a movement of dissatisfied, bitter and power-hungry people who care less about the virtues they bark about during the day. The rampant corruption prevalent in the opposition-run town councils belies the objectives of an alleged transparent party of excellence.

Needless to say the alleged financial audit which was announced to the world by a whole leadership ensemble in front of cameras was a smoke-screen to discourage further digging. The Alliance leadership is complicit in this charade and shame, in cover up of the misappropriation of funds by some of the leadership. Zanu PF has its own factional fights, but splits are never in essence.

It merely sheds the unwanted sons and daughters who would have torn the line and in effect, most trudge their way back to the revolutionary party. They understand the profit of fighting in unison against the same enemy, something the good Alliance still needs to learn.

Meet on streets, NOT feast on tweets

What a bunch of tweeting noise-makers! Zanu PF is busy hitting the ground running for the 2023 elections, whilst the Alliance barks Chin’ono is innocent on Twitter. It is this elitist approach that costs the opposition a good number of votes come every election. The Registrar General’s Office will tell you the most voters are based or reside in the rural areas, where internet and technology penetration lags behind.

The people there do not know nor care about Twitter, they care about bread and butter issues, about sustainable development that will take care of generations of their descendants. A fallen from grace former cabinet minister now allegedly hiding somewhere in East Afrika once retorted that, at a SAPES Trust episode, Zanu PF does not need to rig elections, it has 2.5 million members in their books.

These are the numbers they greet every morning and parcel out necessities to. The Twitter noise makers do not vote, they are in the diaspora or chasing money at Copacabana on Election Day. Swallow that.

Keep the government on defence, OR sitting on the fence

The role of opposition parties is to keep the government of the day accountable, in check and to avoid repression. The role of the opposition is to provide alternative solutions to contribute towards development. These solutions must be clearly set out and explained in understandable language and terms, how they brawl the conundrums bedevilling the country and in what way are they better suited than the measures being taken by the government.

In simpler terms it is not all that the opposition must do day in day out, to point out the symptoms of our economy and governance, the media are there for that. The opposition must go further to provide policy platforms which engage the citizenry and proffer real alternatives to achieve the national aspirations for all Zimbabweans.

Having clear, concise and formidable policy platforms will keep the government on its toes to defend its own policies, lose confidence, and be tamed politically in fear of losing electoral ground. Tendai Biti’s alternative state of the economy addresses were in a promising direction.

The idea of opposition, is not merely to throw spanners in the works of the government for the sake of it, it is equally important to complement government efforts here noble causes are undertaken in order to gain trust from the people that the cause of the opposition is really to develop the country.

Bank on evolution NOT devolution

What has kept Zanu PF in power for so long is its ability to shed off new skin but still remain the old serpent. This allows it to be appealing to voters in every election because of solid policies and effective execution plans. What can one say, the revolution trusts them. The Zimbabwean neo-liberation revolution is going forward, changing to suit the present day circumstances.

Since inception the mantra of the opposition has always been ZANU MUST GO, nothing more nothing less. What then when Zanu goes? It is a public secret that the opposition’s main selling point in Matebeleland is devolution, deliberately done to whip up emotions and retain the region at odds with the government.

The idea of devolution works best in larger countries, with pronounced multi regional and tribal disparities, and usually with militant populations.

As a measure of control, the central government will then empower notable figures within that population group to stifle tribal blame-games. In Zimbabwe, things do not work that way, we are a small country with most regions not able to sustain a regional economy strong enough to run their own affairs.

Congress Blow For Bhebhe

By A Correspondent- A bid by former MDC organising secretary Abednico Bhebhe to stop the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T party from holding its extraordinary congress on Saturday was dealt a blow yesterday after the High Court postponed the matter to next week.

Bhebhe filed an urgent chamber application at the Bulawayo High Court on Friday seeking an interdict to stop the congress until his matter challenging his suspension and subsequent expulsion from the party was resolved.

The congress will be held in Harare, secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora announced on Monday.

The former Nkayi South legislator was recently expelled from the MDC-T on charges that he was an MDC Alliance lackey, which he denies.

Bhebhe is also eyeing the presidency.

However, Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Christopher Dube Banda postponed the matter to next week after the respondents’ lawyer, Tawanda Tawengwa argued that the respondents could not prepare their opposing papers because they were served with the applicant‘s court papers late on Tuesday.

Bhebhe’s lawyer Nqobani Sithole however, said they had “plan B” without giving details.

“We have taken into cognisance that by the time all these will happen, the congress would have taken place and our client is confident that there is a plan B. We have discussed  this option at  large and we will spring a suprise,” Sithole said.

In his application, Bhebhe cited Khupe as the first respondent, while the party chairperson Morgen Komichi and the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC-T) were cited as second and third respondents, respectively.

Khupe, Mwonzora, Komichi and Elias Mudzuri are contesting to fill the vacant post of president following the death of founding leader and former trade unionist Morgan Tsvangirai in February 2018.

MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa seized the reins after Tsvangirai’s death, but the Supreme Court ruled his presidency illegitimate, culminating in a bruising fight for the party assets with Khupe, the interim leader.

The Supreme Court ordered that an extraordinary congress be held. Khupe has used her position to recall a number of councillors and legislators for not declaring allegiance to her and questioning her legitimacy.

“Mafume Had US$65 When He Was Arrested” As Charge Sheet Indicates He Had US$1k Bribe Money

Mafume’s charge sheet

By A Correspondent- Defence lawyers on Thursday chipped away at prosecution claims that Harare mayor Jacob Mafume tried to bribe a key witness in his impending corruption trial.

Mafume’s charge sheet 2

A senior police officer was forced to admit under cross-examination that Mafume had just US$65 when he was arrested, and an Econet number he was allegedly communicating with to set up the bribe was not registered to the witness.

Harare magistrate Ngoni Nduna postponed his ruling on Mafume’s bail application to Friday.

The National Prosecuting Authority led by Constance Ngombengombe and Kudzai Chigwedere read out the latest charges against Mafume, accusing him of offering witness Edgar Dzehonye US$1,500 to alter his testimony.

The prosecution alleged Mafume contacted Dzehonye, the principal housing officer for the City of Harare, on December 12 and asked to meet him the following day at Fife Avenue Shopping Centre.

The conversation allegedly took place on a WhatsApp voice call.

At midday on December 12, it is alleged Mafume called Dzehonye once more and indicated that the new venue for their meeting was Mega 11 Leisure Centre in Logan Park, Hatfield.

The two men allegedly met at the Leisure Centre but Mafume – driving a silver Toyota Belta – “indicated that the venue was overcrowded” and moved the meeting to Avondale Shopping Centre at 5PM.

Prosecutors say during a meeting lasting one and a half hours inside Dzehonye’s vehicle, a white Honda Fit, Mafume “persuaded Dzehonye to testify in his favour in his impending trial” where he is accused of leaning on council officials to grant his sister and his secretary housing stands in Westlea suburb sometime in March, without following formal procedures.

During the meeting, it is claimed Mafume told Dzehonye that Addmore Nhekairo, Harare’s director of housing and also a witness in his trial, had “agreed to assist by giving a favourable testimony in court during trial.”

At the end of their meeting, says the prosecution, Mafume offered to pay Dzehonye US$1,500 the next day.

At around 1PM on December 14, Mafume was arrested at Strathaven Shopping Centre. The NPA says he was inside Dzehonye’s Honda Fit and had offered him US$1,000 with the balance to be paid later that day.

“The state applies for placement of the accused on remand on a charge of defeating the course of justice, alternatively contempt of court,” Ngombengombe told Nduna.

“The state is opposed to bail and will rely mainly on two grounds: that the accused is likely to abscond, and that he will interfere with witnesses if granted bail.”

Ngombengombe called the investigating officer Superintendent Joseph Sirihwindi of Police General Headquarters to the witness stand.

“The accused person was seen with one of key witnesses in a case for which he is on bail. He was subsequently arrested while he was seated in the witness vehicle,” Sirihwindi testified.

“Bail is opposed because there are high chances he will escape and interfere with witnesses, since he has already shown the propensity of doing so. Just three or four days after he was granted bail, he was already interfering with witnesses knowing that he was not supposed to do so.”

Asked whom he contacted over the mobile phone or interfered with directly, Sirihwindi said it was Dzehonye.

“He called him, made an appointment to meet and they did meet. The witness and the arresting detail said so. We also have evidence that he was persuading Admore Nhekairo to meet him.”

For Mafume, Advocate Thabani Mpofu assisted by Tonderai Bhatasara proposed bail of Z$30,000 with conditions including: not to interfere with witnesses including Edgar Dzehonye, continue to reside at his given address and continue to report at the police Anti-Corruption Unit once a week.

Mpofu asked Sirihwindi how much was found on Mafume, or his car, and the investigating officer indicated US$65.

The lawyer also challenged Sirihwindi to tell the court who owned the Econet number 0772616889, on which the supposed calls to meet were made. The police officer said he had not verified, although indicating that Mafume told him it belonged to one Getrude Dumba.

“So, at this stage you have no objective evidence to show that the accused called Dzehonye,” Mpofu quipped.

The lawyer said Mafume was called by Dumba and went to her vehicle.

“She was seated in the driver’s seat and there was no-one in the passenger seat. The car has tinted back seat windows. He didn’t see anyone. He talked to Getrude Dumba while outside the car, and at that stage your officers came to him,” Mpofu told Sirihwindi.

Mpofu said Dumba was at the scene when Mafume was arrested. It was also not denied that the Econet number Mafume was communicating with is registered to Dumba, the lawyer said.

He accused the police of trying to set-up Mafume, who is also a lawyer.

Mpofu said the police claims that Mafume was going to hand over money were not backed by evidence.

“Upon his arrest, he had US$65, and not the US$1,000 he was allegedly going to give away,” the lawyer said as he asked magistrate Nduna to free Mafume on bail.

Sirihwindi said he could not comment on the issue of money, because he was not present when Mafume was arrested.

Nduna will give his ruling on the bail application Friday

Fortune “Chibabest” Chasi Set To Contest Ray Vines On Boxing Day

By A Correspondent- Twenty year old online comedy sensation Melusi Chiripowako, affectionately known as Ray Vines, is set to take former Minister of Energy and Power Development, Fortune Chasi, in a boxing ring as part of their comedy–charity event.

The event dubbed “Mukukuzvi versus Chibabest”, will be held on Boxing Day and will be streamed live on social media. With Covid-19 regulations and restriction guidelines, only 100 people are expected to attend the event.

In an interview with The Herald Arts, Ray Vines, who said the challenge started as a banter on social media, decided to host the real match as a charity cause.

The two then took it on social media showing off their training skills as they get ready for the big day.

“We will be fighting on December 26,” Ray Vines. “This is where sport meets comedy as the old and the young meet in the ring for a friendly charity match.

“The inspiration behind the boxing match came from noticing how boxing great men like Muhammad Ali and Mayweather became so successful. I felt that should be a part of our Zimbabwean sporting and arts culture.

“Our main objective is to raise money for charity by promoting physical fitness, health and well-being through boxing and entertainment.”

Ray Vines said they identified some of the people and places where they wanted to donate the proceeds as part of Christmas gifts.

“For Chasi, he wants to assist the young girls in Mazowe South who are struggling to attend school due to lack of sanitary wear, amongst other things,” he said.

“I have been doing philanthropic work of late and with this money we are raising I want to renovate my creative hub in Gweru and buy equipment which will help artistes in the works and where they meet up.” Ray Vines said the match will be officiated by local boxing champion Charles Manyuchi, as the referee.

“I am being trained by Gweru-based boxer Bonanza,” he said.

“We have some top local artistes who are yet to confirm to join us too. Some of the official partners include Gateway Streams Music, Rainbow Towers and Hybrate Energy.”

Ray Vines said so far through his marketing team, they haven’t received any money donation yet, but have been arranging everything with their own funds.

World Food Programme Sends SOS As Millions Starve In Zimbabwe

HARARE – With millions of Zimbabweans devastated by a year of drought, rising hyperinflation and COVID-19, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today appealed for an additional US$204 million to support over four million of the most food insecure over the next six months.

The appeal comes ahead of the ‘lean’ season, which risks pushing some 6.9 million people—nearly half of Zimbabwe’s population—into hunger by its March peak, according to the most recent national data. That includes roughly one-third of the rural population, who are expected to face “crisis” or “emergency” levels of hunger, and 2.3 million hungry urban dwellers.  Others are spared from falling deeper into acute hunger thanks to assistance from WFP and partners.

“More than half of Zimbabweans in the rural areas are left no alternative but to skip meals, reduce portion size or sell off precious belongings in order to cope,” said Francesca Erdelmann, WFP Zimbabwe’s representative. “We are deeply concerned that if WFP does not receive enough funding to reach the four million people it intends to, families will be further pushed to the limit.”

The funding would allow WFP to provide the minimum amount of emergency food assistance to the most vulnerable 3.5 million rural and 550,000 urban dwellers, complementing the response of Zimbabwe’s government and other partners.

At least 7.6 million people have fallen into poverty this year — a million more than in 2019, according to the recent ZimVAC rural livelihoods assessment. Hyperinflation – a feature of the country’s economic challenges – has pushed the prices of basics beyond the means of most Zimbabweans.

COVID-19’s fallout has exacerbated the situation – making it especially hard for poor families to afford a nutritious diet, with incomes drying up due to the lockdown.

Subsistence farming families who make up three-quarters of Zimbabwe’s population and produce most of its food are also hurting because of a third successive drought-hit harvest this year.

While WFP delivers and saves lives with urgently needed humanitarian assistance, its work in Zimbabwe links with a strong resilience agenda to forge and protect developmental gains.

Zim Born Scientist Part Of The Team That Delivered The “Great Christmas” COVID-19 Present To The World

Tatenda Shopera

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwean-born Senior Scientist at Pfizer, Dr Tatenda Shopera said he proud to be “part of the team that delivered this great Christmas present to the world”.

Shopera, who grew up in Harare, Zimbabwe’s capital, works for Pfizer, the American multinational pharmaceutical corporation which manufactured a vaccine for the novel coronavirus.

Said Shopera:

I grew up in the dusty streets of Harare (Zimbabwe) and one thing that was apparent then was I wanted to make an impact before I leave this place we call earth.

I have always believed that life is not just about an individual but the impact an individual has on the community, that’s what makes life worth living.

Today I am so proud not only of being part of Pfizer but also for being part of the team that delivered this great Christmas present to the world.

I am so proud that I am able to make an impact on a global scale.

The Pfizer/BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine was first authorised for use in the U.S. on Monday, with the initial shipment of roughly 3 million doses going to roughly 145 sites across the U.S.

Kazembe Kazembe Who Recently Partied Wild With Monica Mutsvangwa Says No Parties Will Be Allowed This Festive Season

Paul Nyathi

“Party animals” Ministers partying at Monica Mutsvangwa’s birthday party.

HOME AFFAIRS Minister Kazembe Kazembe who was among some ministers and top government officials who recently attended Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa’s birthday bash has announced prohibition of any form of partying during the 2020 festive season.

The Minister said this is so because Zimbabwe is not yet out of the Covid-19 pandemic risk.

Speaking at the launch of the 2020 Festive Season Awareness Campaign at a press conference on Wednesday, Kazembe said police will be out in full force on the lookout for any partying.

“We are not yet out of the Covid-19 woes but the country is in the second wave of the virus. Parties will not be permissible during the festive season,” he said.

“However, weddings will be allowed but still with limited numbers. Police will be out in full force to enforce Covid-19 regulations and to make sure that they are being followed.”

Mutsvangwa defended her hosting a birthday party with the other ministers and senior government officials without observing COVID-19 social distancing protocols or wearing masks saying she did “nothing wrong”.

Mutsvangwa insisted that the attendees to the party, who included ministers Joel Biggie Matiza, Ziyambi Ziyambi and Kazembe Kazembe as well as information secretary Ndavaningi Mangwana, observed all required protocols.

But pictures of the party, which were shared on social media by Mangwana himself, showed the high living officials hugging and partying without masks or any social distancing.

Mutsvangwa said she had no regrets after her family organised the surprise 60th birthday bash for her despite coming after police last week insisted that “weddings, birthdays, house parties, political and other social gatherings which include musical concerts were still banned” while Mangwana also tweeted that gatherings were ‘still limited to two persons.’

“So, my family cannot host a birthday party for me?” she asked rhetorically when NewsDay approached her for a comment.

“I have attended several events in the last week alone. I was in Nyanga, and there were more than 200 guests there. On Friday evening, I was at the Rainbow Towers and there were more than 400 guests there for the awards for Marketers Association of Zimbabwe, and then my family surprises me with a party with 50 guests comprising of my best friends and then it is a problem?

Mangudya Disposes Off 60% Of RBZ Holding At Fidelity Printers And Refinery.

Own Correspondent

The Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe will unbundle its gold refining and printing unit into two separate companies and sell a majority stake in the new gold refinery business to miners, governor John Mangudya said on Wednesday.

Fidelity Printers and Refiners (FPR) is the sole buyer, refiner and exporter of gold in the country but the government has come under pressure to allow private players to also refine bullion.

Mangudya said the bank would retain 40% shares in the new gold refining business and sell the balance to large scale and small scale gold miners.

“The unbundling of FPR is meant to partially privatise the gold refining business by allowing private players to acquire a stake therein,” Mangudya said.

Mangudya said the central bank would continue to hold 100% shareholding in the printing and minting business for national security reasons.

The government says gold worth $1.2-billion is illegally exported from the country annually and small scale miners, who extract most of the precious metal in Zimbabwe, blame low prices and late payments by FPR for the leakages.

If You Are Not Happy Tell Us, If Happy Tell Others, Mnangagwa implores To ZANU PF Members

Emmerson Mnangagwa

ZANU PF cadres who may feel aggrieved by the outcome of the recently held District Coordinating Committee (DCC) polls can seek recourse through the appropriate party channels, but must not use the media to air their grievances as this amounts to putting the name of the party into disrepute, President Mnangagwa said.

This comes as the governing party has dispatched teams to some areas around the country to gather views coming from some aggrieved persons and ordered a re-run in at least three districts.

In his address to the 347th Ordinary Session of the Politburo at the party headquarters in Harare yesterday, the President commended teams that supervised the DCC elections and the candidates who campaigned in a peaceful and disciplined manner.

“Let me reiterate that the DCC structures and the elections thereof must unite the party and act as a springboard for entrenching our party’s revolutionary ideology, constitutionalism and strong grassroots mobilisation.

“Article 3 Section 20, subsection 2 enshrines the right of members to be elected to any office of the party, subject to the rules and regulations determined by the Central Committee; while subsection 7, gives members the right to seek remedy in respect to any grievances as a result of the action of any person in authority over him”.

As such the President said that any party cadres who may have grievances with the outcome of the DCC polls has a right to seek recourse through the relevant party channels.

“However, in doing so loyalty and discipline, as expressed through understanding and adherence of the party constitution, ethics and guiding principles must always be at the core.

“I therefore want to dissuade our members from using both the mainline and social media to express their grievances. Doing so, amounts to bringing the name of the party into disrepute”.

South African Nurses Suspended Pending Arrest After Body Of A Stillborn Baby Disappears

Two nurses from the Witbank Hospital in Mpumalanga South Africa, have been suspended after the disappearance of a stillborn child at the facility last week.

The provincial health department said the nurses had failed to explain what had happened to the body of the baby.

Department spokesperson Dumisani Malamule said the mother of the child was already aware that she would be giving birth to a stillborn child when she headed into theatre for a C-section on December 11.

She was 35 weeks pregnant.

“The foetus was then kept at the hospital over the weekend. On Monday, December 14, the woman and her family visited the hospital to request the foetus for burial but they could not be assisted. They were told to come back on Tuesday but on their return still could not be assisted. Instead they were given a wrong body,” said Malamule in a statement.

The provincial health department was alerted about the matter and has since suspended the two nurses.

The grieving family has opened a criminal case.

Health MEC Sasekani Manzini expressed shock at the incident.

“It is unacceptable that we can misplace a foetus and not be able to account about the whereabouts of the body. This matter must be fully investigated and consequence management must apply” she said.

Vic Falls Man Dragged To Court After “Winning” Fist Fight Against Two Police Officers Who Were Pushing Their Friends Into A Fuel Queue

State Media

Prosecuting, Mr Listen Nare said Macharaga became unreasonably violent and disorderly after being told to move his car from the queue.

“On the 16th day of June 2020 the accused was at Marange Fuel service station when the two police approached him and told him not to disturb the fuel queue. The two police officers then formally told Macharaga that he was under arrest and tried to handcuff him.

“The accused resisted arrest by refusing to be handcuffed. He snatched the handcuffs from Constable Mhanga and assaulted Constable Zingi by kicking him on the chest. He also kicked Constable Mhanga on the ankle and hand. The two police officers eventually overpowered the accused and handcuffed him,” said Mr Nare.

He said the two police officers did not seek medical attention.

South Africa Releases R327m Deposit To Acquire Covid-19 Vaccine Expected Mid Next Year

Minister Zweli Mkhize

SA will probably take its first delivery of coronavirus vaccines by the middle of 2021 after agreeing on an initial payment, the health ministry said.

The government will take delivery of the vaccines under the Covax initiative that will cover about 10% of the population after Solidarity Fund, a charity organisation, agreed to make an initial payment of about R327m, the ministry said in a statement.

The total cost of the vaccines could amount to more than R2bn. The World Health Organisation-backed Covax initiative aspires to give lower-income countries the same access to vaccines as wealthier nations.

“Our understanding from the production estimates we have been provided with at this stage is that we should expect to receive the first batch of stock in quarter two of 2021,” the ministry said.

SA is seeing a surge in coronavirus cases in some districts just as millions of people prepare to travel to their hometowns and holiday destinations during the festive season. Last Thursday, President Cyril Ramaphosa reintroduced restrictions aimed at containing the spread of the virus in Nelson Mandela Bay, the nation’s sixth-largest city, with a population of 1.3-million people.

At least 805,804 people have been diagnosed with the disease in SA so far and 21,963 have died, according to government figures.

On Friday, 4,932 new cases were detected, health minister Zweli Mkhize said.

The government is also considering buying vaccines from other potential producers, including Johnson & Johnson, Novavax , AstraZeneca and the Pfizer and BioNtech partnership.

It needs to ensure it has funds and resources for the distribution, storage and administration of the vaccines, the ministry said.

“While the Covax facility is our favoured vehicle for accessing vaccines, we will always explore all options to ensure that the process of rolling out vaccines is safe and cost- effective,” it said.

Beitbridge Woman Gives Birth To Siamese Twins

Miss Antonette Moyo

A 22-YEAR-OLD Beitbridge woman has become the sixth in independent Zimbabwe to give birth to Siamese or conjoined twins.

Miss Antonette Moyo gave birth to the girls at Mpilo Central Hospital in Bulawayo on December 1 after she was referred from Beitbridge District Hospital.

Miss Moyo is yet to name the twins who share a chest and a liver but preliminary observations show they have individual hearts and pairs of lungs as well as kidneys.

Of the documented cases of conjoined twins since independence, only one was referred outside the country while in two instances the babies died before surgery and the other two pairs were separated.

Siamese twins result from either fission, in which the fertilised egg splits partially or fusion in which a fertilised egg completely separates but stem cells search for similar cells on the other embryo and fuse the twins.

Medical experts say this happens because identical twins are a result of one fertilized egg and it is effectively one person divided into two but when there are delays in the separation of the embryo, the babies become conjoined.

If conjoined twins undergo certain treatments early, they can be separated easily if there are no shared major organs.

The overall survival rate of conjoined twins is somewhere between five percent and 25 percent and for some reason, experts say female siblings seem to have a better shot at survival than their male counterparts. Although more male twins conjoin in the womb than female twins, females are three times as likely as males to be born alive.

Zimbabwe last conducted a successful separation of two-month-old Murewa twin boys who shared a liver in 2014.
The historic medical breakthrough was recorded after an eight-hour procedure at Harare Children’s Hospital by a team of 50 medical personnel.

Chronicle caught up with Miss Moyo at Mpilo Central Hospital yesterday where her twin girls are being monitored in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

She said although she was free to share her story, she did not want the pictures of her babies to be shared before they are separated.

The hopeful mother who has an older child aged three, said she only got to know about the conjoined twin possibility at seven months when she travelled back from South Africa.

She said she had done a couple of antenatal care visits to the clinic while she was in Johannesburg with her husband although she never went for a scan.

“I come from a village called Masungane in Beitbridge and when South Africa relaxed some of the lockdown conditions, I decided to come home and register the pregnancy locally. I travelled in October and was already seven months pregnant and when I went for the first scan, I was told that my babies were conjoined,” said Ms Moyo.

“I therefore could not deliver at Beitbridge and was referred to Mpilo where I delivered via a Caesarean section on December 1,” she said.

Miss Moyo said the twins were born healthy and they are feeding well. She said her family has been supportive and she wishes to see the day her babies will become normal as she trusts the doctors will be able to separate the girls soon.

“I do have some challenges here and there and would do with some form of help in terms of baby clothes and money.

That’s the least of my worries though, as I just want to see them separated and living normally,” said Ms Moyo.

Mpilo acting chief executive officer Professor Solwayo Ngwenya said the babies were undergoing assessment to ascertain whether they are sharing a major organ and they will be referred to Harare for further treatment.

He said the success of the operation would be based on the outcome of the tests.
“We are doing tests to determine which organs they are sharing which will guide us on the way forward.

“They will be referred to Harare for treatment where there are paediatric surgeons and specialists and we continue to hope for the best,” said Prof Ngwenya.

He said if results show that the twins share many major organs, they will be left to grow like that as trying to separate them may lead to loss of life.

Mnangagwa Says 2020 Was A Great Success

State Media

AS the year draws to an end, President Mnangagwa has urged Zimbabweans to keep the momentum alive in spearheading infrastructural development and economic stabilisation as the country prepares for the successful implementation of the National Development Strategy 1 (NDS1) next year.

Address the 347th Ordinary Session of the Politburo at Zanu PF Headquarters yesterday, the President said the country must consolidate the gains of the Transitional Stabilisation Programme (TSP), which has in the past two years managed to stabilise the economy, priming the country for sustainable and inclusive growth.

Last month, the President launched NDS1, the country’s five-year economic blueprint that will be implemented from next year as a successor to the TSP, and which is premised on the adoption and swift implementation of bold strategies, policies and programmes aimed at achieving economic transformation by 2030,

The President called upon party leaders to provide leadership in communities to ensure the country realises a successful and productive agriculture season, which has been capacitated by the Second Republic through mechanisation and the climate-proofed farming concept of Pfumvudza.

“Guided by the 2018 Party Manifesto and the Goromonzi National People’s Conference Resolutions, my administration remains committed towards the establishment of quality infrastructure for sustained long-term economic growth.

“We are thus determined to complete the construction of dams, major roads, upgrade and modernisation of our ports of entry.”

This year, the Second Republic has completed several infrastructural development projects such as the construction of Moravanyati Dam in Buhera, roads as well as power generating projects in Hwange that will soon ensure that the country becomes energy-sufficient and has surplus for export.

The President urged the party to shun corruption and to take measures to eradicate the scourge and social vice guided by both the party and national Constitution as the moral compass.

In ensuring no one is left behind, the President told the Politburo that his Government was formulating and implementing policies which seek to ensure broad-based and inclusive empowerment for women and youths as was demonstrated by his launch last week of the Micro-Small Medium Enterprises Policy, an initiative that supports the inclusion of women in the economy.

In yet another first, and a further demonstration of the Second Republic’s culture of dialogue and the virtues of a listening leader, President Mnangagwa during the same week held an indaba with women councillors drawn from around the country and across the political divide where the councillors made a plea for more women in key decision making bodies.

“I am pleased that Cabinet approved the principles for the amendment of the Constitution on proportional representation in local authorities providing 30 percent quota representation for women in all local authorities. This is a testimony that we are a strong democracy fostering unity of purpose towards matters of service delivery in local authorities and propelling our national development agenda”.

The President commended women and the youths, as the vanguard of the ruling party, for their continued resolve and active participation in both party and Government programmes.

“It is incumbent of the Secretaries for Economic Affairs as well as Production and Labour, Indigenisation and Economic Empowerment, in liaison with the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development to scale up efforts to capacitate and empower the respective provincial and district secretaries.

“In line with our commitments to the continental and regional blocs, my administration continues to establish mechanisms towards harnessing the attendant benefits that come along with Conventions and Protocols. The African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) is one major continental vehicle to propel innovation and interventions of goods and services to address the unique needs of our communities leveraging on our rich natural resources.

“Comrades, the just struggle against all forms of neoliberalism and neo-imperialism is alive so as to establish the basis and conditions for economic independence and growth of our economy. Let’s therefore, as a leadership continue to provide requisite, timely and appropriate guidelines across all wings of the party,” he said.

Analysts have said that despite efforts from the country’s detractors to manipulate the markets through illicit economic activities, the scourge of the Covid-19 pandemic as well as the albatross of illegal sanctions, Zimbabwe is on course to become a middle-class economy anchored on mining, tourism and agriculture.

Strive Masiyiwa Appointed Into The Netflix Inc Board

Bloomberg

Strive Masiyiwa

Netflix Inc. has appointed Zimbabwean billionaire Strive Masiyiwa to its board, adding its first African director as it looks to new markets for future growth.

Masiyiwa is the founder and executive chairman of Econet Global, a telecommunications company that operates across Africa, Asia, Europe and Latin America. Econet offers phone, broadband and satellite service, and is also a major provider of mobile payments.

Masiyiwa brings a fresh set of connections and experience as the first African — and the third international media executive — to join Netflix’s board in recent years. The streaming giant already has two directors from Europe, which has been its fastest-growing region.

Netflix now has more than 190 million subscribers, and is looking to regions beyond the U.S. and Europe for its next batch of customers.

For now, Africa is a small market for paid streaming video. In a continent of more than a billion people, Netflix has just a couple million customers, according to Digital TV Research. But the company has long argued that it would play the long game adding customers in Asia and Africa, home to the majority of the world’s people.

Toward that end, Netflix has started offering cheaper, mobile-only plans and has commissioned a slate of original series and movies.

ZANU PF Calls For DCC Elections Rerun Due To Electoral Irregularities

Paul Nyathi

Patrick Chinamasa

ZANU PF has ordered for fresh DCC Elections in some of its districts citing electoral irregularities.

Addressing the media after the ZANU PF Politburo meeting on Wednesday, Zanu PF acting spokesperson Patrick Chinamasa said results from almost every district have been accepted while rerun polls will be held in at least three disputed districts on December 28. Because of weather vagaries, elections that were supposed to be held on Saturday were extended, causing delays in the whole process, Chinamasa said.

“Overall, we are happy that the mission was accomplished, (elections) were held in a very peaceful atmosphere” said Chinamasa.

In Manicaland, results for all the eight districts, namely; Buhera, Chimanimani, Chipinge, Makoni, Mutasa, Nyanga, Zimunya-Marange and Mutare Urban were accepted.

However, in Mutare Urban the Politburo said a rerun should be held to fill in the position of chairman after an inconclusive poll.

In Mashonaland Central, results from Bindura, Mazowe, Shamva, Mt Darwin, Guruve, Muzarabani, Rushinga, Mbire districts were all accepted.

While in Mashonaland East results from all the districts, namely; Chikomba, Goromonzi, Marondera, Mudzi, Seke, Murehwa, Wedza, Uzumba Maramba Pfungwe were accepted.

In Mashonaland West, results from Chegutu, Hurungwe, Kadoma, Sanyati, Ngezi, Kariba, Zvimba, were all accepted while the results in Makonde they will be a rerun for the post of chairman.

The province of Masvingo has accepted results from all the districts namely Bikita, Chiredzi, Mwenezi, Chivi, Masvingo Urban, Gutu South, Zaka, while in Matabeleland North, results from Binga, Bubi, Nkayi, Lupane, Tsholotsho, Umguza and Hwange were all accepted amid indications that a petition could come from the district of Hwange while for Tsholotsho a rerun will be held for the post of chairman.

In Matabeleland South — results were accepted for all the districts namely, Beitbridge, Bulilima, Gwanda, Insiza, Mangwe, Matobo and Umzingwane — spending the presentation of a petition to the Command Centre in the last district.

In the Midlands province, results from Chirumhanzu, Gokwe North, Gokwe South, Gweru, Kwekwe, Mberengwa, Shurugwi, Zvishavane.

The two metropolitan provinces — Harare and Bulawayo — have already completed setting up of DCC structures in their respective provinces.

Prosecutor Tapiwa Kasema Nowhere To Be Seen

State Media

Tapiwa Kasema

PROSECUTOR Tapiwa Kasema, who is under investigation for consenting to bail for four notorious armed robbers led by suspected gang leader — Musa Taj Abdul — is reportedly on the run, hours after he was suspended from duty by Prosecutor-General Kumbirai Hodzi.

Officers from Harare Central Police Station, who were keen to question him as the investigation started yesterday, could not locate him at his Glen View 3 home where his family professed ignorance over his whereabouts.

Sources said the police first visited Kasema’s residence in 49th Crescent on Tuesday night, but did not find him.

They later proceeded to his mother’s house where the search yielded the same result.

Continued efforts to locate him yesterday were fruitless.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi could not comment on the issue yesterday, saying it was still premature.

Police sources, however, said authorities had since launched a manhunt for Kasema.

He was arrested in May last year on criminal abuse of office charges after he allegedly consented to the release of a passport belonging to former Cabinet minister Ignatius Chombo, who is facing a slew of corruption allegations.

Abdul (47) was on Monday granted bail by High Court Judge Justice Benjamin Chikowero along with co-accused Godfrey Mupamhanga (27), Rudolf Tapiwa Kanhanga (29) and Douglas Mutenda (31), but remained in custody as the four are facing fresh charges.

Before they could post bail money on Tuesday, police brought up fresh charges against the suspects and requested that they remain in custody pending their remand hearing on the new charges and further investigations.

The four were arrested in Beitbridge in August with five others — Charles Lundu (47), Tapiwa Mangoma alias Tapa (27), Innocent Jairosi (32), Prince Makodza (31) and Liberty Mupamhanga (29).

Chief Law Officer in the Prosecutor-General’s Office Mr Justin Uladi confirmed the suspension of Kasema, saying the matter has been referred to the police for investigations, while they are preparing to launch an appeal against the High Court decision.

“We are proceeding to suspend Tapiwa Kasema who consented to bail in the case of the armed robbers,” said Mr Uladi.

“We have further referred his case to the police for investigation because we are of the view that the consent was corruptly made.”

Mr Uladi said the State is appealing against Justice Chikowero’s decision to grant bail.

“Our prosecutor did not have the requisite authority to file the consent order as per our standard operating procedures,” he said.

“Further, the judge misdirected himself in relying on a concession which was improperly made. In an event the judge was not bound by the concession by the prosecutor. Therefore, the judge did not properly apply his mind to the case before him.”

Kasema made headlines when he was arrested last year on criminal abuse of office charges after he allegedly consented to the release of a passport belonging to former Cabinet minister Ignatius Chombo, who was facing several corruption allegations.

He was arrested by officers from the Criminal Investigations Department Commercial Crime Division and his docket was being handled by the Anti-Corruption Special Unit department.

Abdul, Mupamhanga and Mutenda, who have been in custody for about four months, were granted $5 000 bail each by Justice Chikowero, while Kanhanga was released on $2 000 bail.

As part of their bail conditions, they were ordered to reside at their given addresses and report to the police every Friday between 6am and 6pm until the matter has been finalised.

When the alleged robbers appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts in August on several charges of armed robbery, they were escorted by more than 10 police officers from the CID Homicide Unit.

They were not asked to plead when they appeared before Mr Richard Ramaboa who remanded them in custody and were advised to apply for bail at the High Court.

ZCTU Snubs Khupe, Mwonzora Congress

The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) on Tuesday said it was not involved in the opposition MDC-T’s Extraordinary Congress pencilled for this Saturday.

In a statement, ZCTU said its members who will be participating in the elective congress will be doing so in their personal capacity, not representing the organisation. Read the statement:

The ZCTU is not involved in the MDC-T extraordinary congress. We were never approached.

ZCTU, as a labour movement, has members across the political divide and individuals like deputy secretary-general Thomas Masvingwe are participating in their individual capacities as supporters of their party.

The Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) was formed in 1999 largely out of the labour movement (ZCTU.

Meanwhile, MDC-T’s interim leadership on Monday said it met the ZCTU leadership to sign a code of conduct among other things, but the labour union yesterday said it will not participate in the congress.

The Supreme Court-sanctioned congress is aimed at electing a substantive heir to the party’s founding leader, Morgan Tsvangirai.

The late former Prime Minister (GNU era) succumbed to cancer on the 14th of February in 2018.

The snub comes when the MDC-T and rival MDC Alliance led by Nelson Chamisa have been fighting over the party’s name and assets with each side claiming to be the original party left by Tsvangirai.

Kazembe Kazembe Ordered To Compensate Boy Who Was Assaulted By Cop

Siwela Says: Trump To Be Declared Election Winner On 20 Jan 2021

Paul Siwela

The controversial leader of the Mthwakazi Liberation Front, Paul Siwela has declared against all logic that outgoing US President Donald Trump will be declared winner of the just ended elections in January.

Siwela who has for years been living inside his own reality as a politician without local support, wrote the below statement:

In year 2000 as Secretary-General of Zapu, I appeared on Zimbabwe TV in the political parties debate for the general elections and said that if Zimbabwe was not going to change its political leadership and trajectory, Zimbabwe was going to lose its currency, the Zimbabwe dollar and its economy would inevitably crash. No one believed me.

In 2002, I stood as a Presidential Candidate against President Robert Mugabe and others and in many a time I told the audiences that attended my rallies and meetings , that Morgan Tswangirai was never going to be President of Zimbabwe. No one believed me.

In 2008 and many subsequent years and to date , I still maintain that Matebeleland is going to break away from Zimbabwe to form The Republic of Matebeleland and no one believed me.

In 2017 I said President Robert Mugabe will not be buried at National Heroes Acre and no one believed me.

Today I say President Donald J Trump will be declared the winner and sworn in on 20th January 2021 for his second term in office. Yes, you read well, I said President Donald J. Trump will be sworn in for his second term in office. Who will believe me ?

By A Correspondent | The Murehwa based Makore family has announced a decision to bury their 7 year old Tapiwa without his head.

Last month, several neighbours of key suspect, Mr Thanks Makore in Damafalls, Harare told ZimEye.com they witnessed police officers who arrested him receiving beer and food from the arrested suspect. Speaking on Friday afternoon, family spokesperson, Gogo Beaulah, said: “As a family we have decided to gi for burial. We have sat down; it is very heavy for us to bury the child without a head but there is nothing we can do; we are burdened. We hope that the police are going to assist us to find the child’s head.

“It is a very difficult thing we have looked at all sides of the matter… We looked at the father and mother for them to continue moaning… We don’t have a promise of when the child’s head is going to be found.”

Speaking to Tilda, she also responded on the issue of an order by the local chief who has declared that the lad should not be buried without his head. She said:

“We went back to the chief to update him and tell him that is a family we are now overburdened. Waiting for over 3-months the chief said that there is nothing he can do, and then he said we have waited for too long so I would draw my word barring the burial.”

She then added while announcing the date of burial saying:

“We have arranged for the 9th of January 2021 for burial; we are looking to all family members who have gone for holiday and those would be at work and we have found that date to be most appropriate and fitting.”
