How Do Cockroaches Spread Diseases?

Health

Cockroaches can spread a range of diseases.

However, unlike mosquitoes , they are not direct vectors of diseases through mechanical transfer and acting as a reservoir.

Transmission occurs indirectly, from consumption or contact with items which have been contaminated by cockroaches, rather than through bites.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) “Cockroaches are not usually the most important cause of a disease, but like houseflies, they play a supplementary role in the spread of some diseases”…

Cockroaches are proven or suspected carriers of the organisms that cause the following infections:

Salmonellosis
Typhoid Fever
Cholera
Gastroenteritis
Dysentery
Leprosy
Plague
Campylobacteriosis
Listeriosis
Giardia
Cockroaches can also trigger asthma and other allergies as well as spread
E.coli , staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus

Command Health:Chiwenga Warns “Defiant” Hospitals

Constantino Chiwenga Minister of Health and Child Care

VICE-President Dr Constantino Chiwenga has warned hospitals which are demanding Covid-19 clearance certificates from people seeking medical services as well as those capitalising on the global pandemic to charge exorbitant fees saying Government will soon take corrective action.

The turning away of patients without Covid-19 clearance certificates is reportedly happening across the country at both private and public hospitals.

A Covid-19 test certificate is beyond the reach of many as PCR test cost between US$20 and US$65 at private institutions while at public institutions it’s free for people identified during contact tracing.

VP Chiwenga, who was recently appointed Health and Child Care Minister, also promised a new era in the country’s healthcare system, saying there would be massive restructuring of the health sector.

The Vice-President was recently assigned an additional task of taking charge of the Health Ministry which is under the spotlight because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The country had by Wednesday recorded 122 Covid-19 deaths and 4 893 confirmed cases.

The country’s situation has been worsened by nurses that are on strike demanding better salaries.

Speaking during a tour of Bulawayo Kraal Irrigation Scheme in Binga on Thursday, VP Chiwenga said health institutions should prioritise the protection of human lives.

“Government is aware of some hospitals which are turning away patients seeking medical help by demanding Covid-19 test certificates.

Some hospitals are also taking advantage of the pandemic to charge exorbitant fees and we are saying that should stop,” he said.

Dr Chiwenga said Government will soon demand an explanation from hospitals which have been turning away patients or charging exorbitant fees.

“No one has authority or right to turn away any person seeking help and we will be taking tough measures,” he said.

Dr Chiwenga said hospitals should not take advantage of the Covid-19 pandemic to profiteer at the expense of people’s lives.
VP Chiwenga said Government is also in the process of procuring more PPE and testing kits.

“Let’s work together, Government on its part is buying more equipment, PPE and PCR test kits,” he said-Chronicle

Whakatane And Rotorua Women Win In Zimbabwe Rural Schools Library Trust Raffle

NATIONAL NEWS

13 August 2020

Media Release

Hinekuoro Hohua of Whakatane and Romelyn Garde of Rotorua emerged winners in a raffle organised by the Zimbabwe Rural Schools Library Trust (ZRSLT) New Zealand to raise funds to ship books to Zimbabwe. The draw was conducted by the President of the Rotorua Multicultural Society Dr Magriet Theron in Rotorua recently.

Hinekuoro won the Mitre 10 Mega Gift Voucher valued at $500, while Romelyn won the ZRSLT debut CD compilation Libraries without boundaries. Both winners were pleasantly surprised by being winners. The Gift Voucher was donated by Mitre 10 Mega Te Rapa at The Base in Hamilton after a sausage sizzle booked for 11 April 2020 was cancelled as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and the CD is a ZRSLT production.

“I never entered the draw to win, but to support a good cause”, said an excited Hinekuoro, a former teacher who is passionate about adding value to the lives of deserving children. “We are privileged here in New Zealand to have easier access to reading material in comparison to some developing countries, so when I saw the opportunity to help raise money for shipping books to Zimbabwe for reading by the children there I bought many tickets as I could to ensure the children received some reading material”, she added.

Romleyn was looking forward to listening to Ndebele and Shona songs on the CD, compiled by the ZRSLT from songs donated by musicians based in Canada, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Zimbabwe. “Music is a universal language which has the potential to unite the world for common causes, and I am fortunate to have won a CD with songs in languages that I am yet to master. It gives me an opportunity to learn Zimbabwean languages, as well as increase my value for reading”, said Romleyn.

ZRSLT New Zealand Deputy Chairperson, Dr Kudakwashe Tuwe, who sold the winning ticket to Hinekuoro was thankful to all the persons who purchased tickets and donated generously. “I was inspired by the level of appreciation of the work we do by the people who supported us by buying tickets or simply donating when they realised we were raising funds to support a children’s reading initiative in rural Zimbabwe.

The money raised will go a long way in fulfilling our objective to make a difference in the lives of the children through providing access to reading material for them,” said Dr Tuwe who added that the raffle was a win-win affair as those who supported by buying tickets and donating got the satisfaction of contributing to a noble cause, those who won prizes got to enjoy their prizes while the rural children of Zimbabwe will enjoy the books.

“We are grateful to all those who gave a helping hand – the ticket buyers, cash donors and to Mitre 10 Mega at The Base in Hamilton who donated a gift voucher after a sausage sizzle which failed not because of their own making. Mita 10 Mega Te Rapa demonstrated its unparalleled Corporate Social Responsibility spirit”, concluded Dr Tuwe.

308 tickets were sold, and $1845 inclusive of ticket sales and donations was raised.

War Vets Rave Mthuli Ncube Over Salary Increment

The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) has cranked pressure on the government demanding to have an increment similarly awarded to security forces.

According to the latest salary increment figures awarded to the army starting in June, lowest-ranked soldier will earn ZWL$8,000 and the highest officer will earn ZWL$18, 000.

ZNLWVA national executive member Andy Mhlanga said the war veterans were eagerly waiting for their monthly wages to be reviewed upwards as they are regarded as a reserve force.

“We know that the uniformed forces have been awarded some salary increment and we also want to be in the same bracket with the service forces,” Mhlanga said.

“We are going to be engaging our parent ministry to consider us in awarding a salary increment as the war veterans’ leadership as a request from our membership.”

He said the veterans of the liberation struggle were still waiting for the Covid-19 allowance of US$75 which was given to the civil service.

The demand for a review of the allowances comes at a time war veterans have come out in the open that ZNLWVA membership was rallying behind President Emmerson Mnangagwa in face of demonstrations that were organised by the opposition MDC and civic society members last year.

Christopher Mutsvangwa chairperson of the war veterans had urged war veterans to come out in full force in support of the members of the defence forces in maintaining order and peace in the event that the demonstrations occur in the country.

War veterans have in the past years been demanding salary increment every time government awards salary increment to civil servants.

In his speech to mark Defence Forces Day on Tuesday, President Mnangagwa said the passing of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Bill into law will address most of the welfare issues of veterans of the liberation struggle.

He said war veterans should take advantage of the “empowerment opportunities availed in all sectors of the economy and the implementation of the devolution policy”.

Chin’ono, Ngarivhume Denied Access to Warm Food

By ZLHR| Today lawyers Beatrice Mtetwa and Roseline Hanzi were finally allowed access to Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume in private.

This private consultation was after lawyers insisted on compliance with the court order and the ZPCS officers consulted their superiors.

Although social visits were allowed, Chin’ono and Ngarivhume were denied access to warm food.

Lawyers were advised that the administrative measures did not allow the two to access food that is not purchased online from ‘reputable sources’.

“Where Are The Engineers In These Trying Times?”

By Andy Stanley- Following the energy challenges that Zimbabwe has been going through, there were expectations that the next Minister of Energy was going to be a leading engineer and definitely not an accountant Soba Zhemu who followed the lawyer Fortune Chasi.
The true definition of an Engineer is a creative problem-solver and  we appoint an accountant to run such an important strategic institution.
But the question I have is where are the engineers in these times of crisis? Surely, before we make any such strategic decisions our government should check if there are engineers with engineering solutions that could help halt this downward spiral that this important institution has been heading to, to a new ways of pressing lift buttons.
We expect our Zimbabwean government  to normally consult the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE) or the Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ) in situations like this. In Zimbabwe we continue with Robert Mugabe’s legacy of  relegating engineers just to be workers and not to be in ministerial positions.
Mr President Sir,  is this using engineering expertise to its full capacity? The Rhodesian Prime Minister’s top advisors were mostly dominated by Engineers that is why they were able to build the second biggest manufacturing economy in Zimbabwe with now struggling institutions like ZISCO steel, NRZ, Olivine, Mhangura and even the now struggling ZESA just to name a few.
Mr President Sir, if you want an expert to help you redesign parts of normal life in Zimbabwe, you will not find any one who can beat our local engineers and those abroad.
The obvious place to have engineering expertise would be at the Ministry of Energy and the President advisory board ,but this time around, it seems clear that engineering is not part of the advisory system.
Zimbabwe needs to maintain and develop modern road networks, dams, bridges, telecoms, airports and new cities. For Zimbabwe’s economy to kick-start, we now need to fully utilise the few remaining engineers in the country and those abroad.
This strategy was used by Ian Douglas Smith to build Rhodesia during the white regime’s 16-year rule. National railways of Zimbabwe, Air Zimbabwe, Hwange, Ziscosteel and Shabanie-Mashaba Mines are all products of Rhodesian strategy that was supported by the apprentices, technicians and artisans.
Imagine a Zimbabwe where we have better connection between, government, business, engineers and investors to turn our infrastructure and manufacturing sector’s future into a modern, resilient, exciting and highly exportable commodity.
For our government to fulfill its dream of economic growth in  Zimbabwe this will not be achieved without the Engineers leading from the front.
Engineer Jacob Kudzayi Mutisi is Chair of the ICT division of Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE) , a Board Member of the Zimbabwe Institute of Directors (IOD), a Member of the Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers (ZIE) and Practising Engineer with Engineering Council of Zimbabwe (ECZ)
Leaders who don’t listen will eventually be surrounded by people who have nothing to say.

New Executive Management At ZBC

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) has announced that Mr Alson Mfiri is now the Acting Director of News and Current Affairs.

Mfiri was previously the Director for Special Projects.

The former news anchor and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe spokesperson is taking over from Mr Gilbert Nyambabvu who is now the Director of Digital Platforms and Innovation.

ZBC has made several changes in executive management in the recent past with some saying it is recycling its workforce, an approach they say has hamstrung transformation efforts.

The recent changes come when the broadcaster has been immensely affected by the coronavirus after 30 of its workers earlier this week tested positive for the virus and are all currently isolated at home.

Stern Test For ED As SADC Opposition Parties Mount Pressure On Their LeadersMnangagwa

By A Correspondent- Opposition political parties in South Africa and Botswana have ratcheted pressure on their countries’ leaders to intervene on growing reports on human rights abuses in Zimbabwe.

Civic society activists and opposition party members have over the past few weeks been criticising President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration for its heavy-handedness in quelling dissenting voices.

Zimbabwe is currently under the Covid-19 lockdown and critics say authorities have used the restrictive measures to stifle opposition voices.

A global campaign under the hashtag #ZimbabweLivesMatter has also caught the attention of global leaders and celebrities but Harare insists that the campaign is meant to destabilise the government.

Early this week, South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa sent envoys to Harare to be apprised on the country’s socio-political situation.

The envoys met Mnangagwa and its meetings with opposition political parties were cancelled at the eleventh hour. South Africa’s biggest opposition political party, the Democratic Alliance said Ramaphosa has to show leadership in his capacity as the AU chairman by flying to Harare to meet with all the relevant stakeholders and get a balanced picture of the political crisis unfolding in Zimbabwe.

“For far too long, successive ANC governments have stood by as Zanu-PF has trampled civil liberties with impunity and disregard for the rule of law.

The ANC has played an enabling role in the Zimbabwe crisis by glossing over state brutality in the country and its mismanagement of the economy,” the DA said in a statement.

“President Ramaphosa faces the first real test in his chairmanship of the AU. He will have to make a choice on whether to stand with the people of Zimbabwe against the tyranny of Zanu-PF or continue with the failed policy of ‘quiet diplomacy’.”

Earlier this week, Botswana’s opposition party also raised the red flag over unfolding events in neighbouring Zimbabwe. South Africa and Botswana are home to thousands of Zimbabweans seeking economic and political refuge.

“We further urge civil society in Botswana to rise and mobilise in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Zimbabwe. We urge the unions, clergy, student formations and other pro-democracy NGOs to come up with ways to pile pressure on the ZANU-PF regime,” Dumelang Saleshando, leader of the opposition in Botswana’s National Assembly said in a statement.

“To our civil society and NGOs we say silence and inaction is not the answer.

Today it is Zimbabwe, tomorrow it could be Botswana; and would it be proper for others to shrug their shoulders and say it’s a Botswana problem and has nothing to do with us?

“As we raise our voice in indignation, we also wish to state that we also wish to state that we too associate ourselves with the globally trending hashtag #Zimbabwean Lives Matter.”

Before this, Moussa Faki Mahamat, African Union Commission chief had said the commission was following closely political developments in Zimbabwe as the country mounts concerted efforts in response to the devastating effects of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Cognisant of the existing harsh socio-economic situation in the country, the Chairperson urges the Zimbabwe authorities to respond to the pandemic ensuring that the national response is premised on human rights as enshrined in the 1981 African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights.

The Chairperson is concerned about reports of disproportionate use of force by security forces in enforcing Covid-19 emergency measures. He implores the authorities to exercise restraint in their response to peaceful protests,” he said.

“The Chairperson further encourages the government of Zimbabwe to uphold the rule of law allowing for freedom of the media, freedom of assembly, freedom of association and the right to information.

Violations of these rights are a breach of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights and the 2007 African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance.”

Last month, Zimbabwe’s security forces thwarted planned protests by the opposition over corruption in the public service and the deteriorating economic situation.

This year, economic hardship has been exacerbated by drought and the coronavirus pandemic.

Nearly two thirds of Zimbabwe’s 14.4 million inhabitants are predicted to face hunger by the end of 2020, according to the UN’s World Food Programme.

In what appeared as a response to the growing pressure from the region, Mnangagwa on Tuesday said Zimbabwe was facing a “wave of aggression manifesting through illegal sanctions, hostile anti-Zimbabwe propaganda mounted on social media platforms and other forms of asymmetrical warfare”.

Lesotho Hardest Hit By COVID-19

By A Correspondent- Lesotho has been hit the hardest by the novel coronavirus as it is in need of 91 000 tonnes of food  aid to support vulnerable households in the next 6 months, SABC reports.

According to the publication, almost half the population of Lesotho are food insecure and they are threatened by hunger:

The pandemic has hit Lesotho hard. The country was already facing food shortages due to drought when it arrived. The Lesotho Disaster Management Authority has released a 2020 Vulnerability Assessment report stating that almost 800 000 people are threatened with hunger. It says at least 91 000 tonnes of staple food will be needed to assist the affected households over the next six months.

Job “Saro Wiwa” Sikhala Conjures Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo

I have known Job “Wiwa Sikhala” since 1996 when I first met him in the revolutionary Complex 5 (Bagdad Student Hostel) at the University of Zimbabwe where his passion for the students in particular and Zimbabweans in general resonated with the ideals of the liberation struggle.

One such liberation icon who has inspired Job “Saro Wiwa” Sikhala is none other than uMdala wethu (Father Zimbawe) whose dedication and commitment to the common man’s struggle ever since his trade unionist and National Democratic Party days through to ZAPU resembled the selflessness of Nelson Rolihlahla Madiba Mandela. After independence, Father Zimbabwe suffered untold political persecution from his erstwhile fellow freedom fighters and in 1983 had to flee to London after illegally crossing the Botswana border incognito. Father Zimbabwe assured the nation that he was going to look for “solutions” to Zimbabwean problems abroad.

Thirty seven years later, a post independence and 21st century nationalist who matches Father Zimbabwe in stature and heart for the country is in a de ja vu moment from the same tormentors who haunted his hero until the ill-fated Unity Accord of 1987. It is now a matter of historical record that Job Sikhala has been on the run since the middle of July while speculation around his whereabouts abounds. He has been reported to have crossed into Zambia and back into Zimbabwe and only to be prowled in the rural area of Dema, Seke. Currently, he is reported to be in Mozambique with the military intelligence and central intelligence operatives on his heels.

In his regular engagements with the citizens of Zimbabwe, Job “Saro Wiwa” Sikhala has implored the nation to be united in sentiments reminiscent of Father Zimbabwe’s “We cannot move forward if we are divided.”Under the vibrant 31st July Movement, he has managed to unify former friends and foes reeling under the yoke of poverty wrought upon the nation by the corrupt and repressive Mnangagwa regime. Ironically, E. D. Mnangagwa commandeered the notorious North Korean trained 5th Brigade which is guilty of committing genocide in Matabeleland and the unprecedented persecution of Joshua Mqabuko Nyongolo Nkomo.

Job “Saro Wiwa” Sikhala has now conjured “Chibwechitedza” (the slippery rock) by constantly outfoxing the security apparatus ever since the dreaded announcement by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) that they are interested in “interviewing” him and 13 other activists who have since been labeled as terrorists who need to be “flushed out.” Eerily similar, Joshua Nkomo and his ZAPU colleagues were labeled as “dissidents” and “cockroaches” before the tragic washing of chaff (Gukurahundi massacre) witnessed in newly independent Zimbabwe and perpetrated against the people of Matabeleland by E. D. Mnangagwa’s secutity apparatus. Job “Saro Wiwa” Sikhala’s post indepence struggle against the corrupt and parasitic elite now fittingly mirrors Father Zimbabwe’s “The Story of My Life.” Like Nkomo, Sikhala has managed to expose what is wrong with Zimbabwe and equally is optimistic that “Freedom Lies Ahead.”

“ZSE Lost ZWL$42billion Since Trading Resumed”: Report

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Stock Exchange has lost ZWL $42.5 Billion since trading resumed earlier this month after the government suspended the national bourse for 5 weeks under the banner that they wanted to investigate forex exchange rates illegal dealings, Equity Axis reports.

According to the publication, international buyers are cashing out of ZSE as evidenced by records from the market:

A cumulative ZWL42.5billion has been lost since the market resumption early last week as stocks appear less and less a safe haven in the face of state interference. Over ZWL200million has been withdrawn by foreign investors in just 8 sessions, while about ZWL64.5million came in as foreign inflows.

Data shows that foreign selloffs have been dominant and over 50 percent of disposals post the suspension has been driven by foreigners who have been able to move their portfolio divestments in the latest trading incidences in the interbank.

The government, economists and brokers are yet to comment on the worrisome statistics coming from the ZSE.

MDC Alliance MPs’ Court Order Blocked

By A Correspondent- The High Court has dismissed an urgent application by fourteen (14) opposition MDC Alliance legislators who sought an order to block the Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T from replacing them in Parliament.

The Members of Parliament were recalled by the MDC-T interim leadership earlier this year for “ceasing to be members of the party” after they remained loyal to Nelson Chamisa whom the Supreme Court said was not the legitimate leader of the party. Justice Kwenda said:

They seem to be bent on enlisting the company of the High Court in circumventing the Supreme Court judgment.

It is trite that the High Court cannot overturn a Supreme Court judgment. The legal profession derives its relevance from the application of the rule of law of which constitutionalism is the cornerstone. Jurisprudentially, Supreme Court judgments are collectively a source of law.

The legislators had argued that their recalls were illegal since it was done by Khupe who contested in the 2018 elections with a different political party.

This comes as MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe said it was proceeding to nominate replacements for 15 seats in the National Assembly and Senate that were declared vacant by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

“Zanu Pf Is Rigid Making It A Stalemate”

By A Correspondent- With the situation in Zimbabwe remaining tense, both local and external analysts say the only viable path out of the country’s mess is to get President Emmerson Mnangagwa to work closely with the opposition.

This comes as some in the opposition have once again pinned their hopes on South Africa, regional bloc Sadc and the international community somehow intervening decisively in Zimbabwe’s long-standing political and economic crises this time around.

It also comes days after President Cyril Ramaphosa dispatched special envoys – former South Africa vice president Baleka Mbete and ex-ministers Sydney Mufamadi and Ngoako Ramatlhodi – to Harare, where they held a meeting with Mnangagwa over the country’s myriad crises.

Now, and amid the divided local opinions over Ramaphosa’s intervention, analysts say hopes that outsiders will finally manage to resolve Zimbabwe’s problems are misplaced.

“South Africa’s deployment of special envoys to help resolve the Zimbabwe crisis is an important first step which requires further steps and leadership from Zimbabweans themselves.

“With all the ongoing challenges in the global economy, including the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic, the world can move on without paying attention to Zimbabwe.

“So, the responsibility is on the collective leadership in Zimbabwe to take the decisive and necessary steps to find a lasting solution to the multi-faceted crisis currently engulfing the country,” Human Rights Watch director for southern Africa, Dewa Mavhinga, told the Daily News yesterday.

University of Zimbabwe politics expert, Eldred Masunungure, said Ramaphosa’s success in ending the country’s troubles was heavily dependent on co-operation between Mnangagwa and the opposition.

“The South African initiative may succeed, but it depends on Zanu-PF moving from its rigid position where they are demanding all stakeholders to come to join Polad (the Political Actors Dialogue) for negotiations, and the main opposition is against that.

“At the moment, we have a stalemate. (Nelson) Chamisa and Mnangagwa are the most two important players. They need to soften their stance, especially Zanu-PF.

“It seems they (Zanu-PF) have hardened their stance after the July 31 demonstration,” Masunungure told the Daily News.

Professor of World Politics, Stephen Chan, also warned that no one was likely to help Zimbabwe, because the country had failed to end its own troubles when outsiders had previously tried to assist it.

“South Africa is having desperate problems of its own right now. So is China, by the way. No one is going to come to rescue Zimbabwe.

“Right now, it’s down to Zimbabwe itself, by itself,” Chan told the Daily News.

The director of the Centre for Africa-China Studies at the University of Johannesburg, David Monyae, said South Africa was not likely to succeed in ending Zimbabwe’s problems – adding that it was up to Zimbabweans themselves to end the crises engulfing their country.

“Once again, Zimbabwe faces its usual periodical flares. This particular flare comes at the worst of times, whether seen from internal or external factors.

“Despite the fanfare of a new dawn ushered in by the military in upending (the late former president Robert) Mugabe’s almost four decades rule, both Zanu-PF and the splintered MDC formations failed to find ways of uniting the country around a meaningful reconstruction.

“This goes to show that Mugabe’s ouster was not an indictment on his leadership; it was a change of personnel, but business continues as usual,” Monyae said in an opinion yesterday.

“The second most important factor that distinguishes the current situation from the previous disturbances is that the main guarantors of peace in Zimbabwe – mainly Sadc led by South Africa, former colonial powers led by the UK and more importantly the US – have lost the power to influence the situation.

“The perceived power of Pretoria to influence … Mnangagwa and Zanu-PF is eroding daily. While … Ramaphosa dispatches envoys, Baleka Mbete and Sydney Mufamadi to Harare in an attempt to quieten the noise, his Finance minister Tito Mboweni is pre-occupied with the business of borrowing money from the IMF and the World Bank.

“This act of borrowing funds from the IMF was one of Zimbabwe’s original sins,” Monyae said further.

“Britain and the US are too stuck in their own unravelling decline to be counted upon to marshal any influence in Zimbabwe.

“The UK, outside the EU, carries no sticks or carrots of note to be noticed in Harare.

“With all of the above, one wonders what exactly the envoys could possibly say to Mnangagwa and splintered MDC formations to really carry weight that warrants change?

“At the end of the day, the fate of Zimbabwe will be wrought by Zimbabweans themselves,” Monyae added in his opinion published in the Daily Maverick.

All this comes as the government has been accused of launching a brutal crackdown against the organisers of last month’s flopped mass protests.

Rights groups have also said dozens of opposition figures and activists have been tortured and assaulted in a retributive exercise by suspected security agents.

On its part, the government has refuted the allegations – claiming instead that the opposition is allegedly working with foreigners to destabilise the country

Latest On Hopewell Chin’ono Fate

By A Correspondent- Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono will remain in prison at least until Tuesday, August 18, after magistrate Ngoni Nduna postponed a ruling into a prosecution application for defence lawyer Beatrice Mtetwa to stand down for contempt.

State prosecutors made an application seeking the magistrate to bar lead lawyer Mtetwa from representing Chin’ono in court.

State prosecutor Whisper Mabhaudhi accused Mtetwa of posting comments on her Facebook page, Beatrice Mtetwa and the Rule of Law. Mtetwa said she did not have any social media accounts, but advised the court that the page is run by a Boston based filmmaker, Lorie Conway.

An accomplished human rights defender, Mtetwa is the only African besides Nelson Mandela to have received the Ludovic Trarieux International Human Rights Prize from France.

Meanwhile, the High Court says Transform Zimbabwe leader Jacob Ngarivhume and Chin’ono should be allowed visits by their lawyers and doctors, and to confer with both in private. Prison authorities were denying the two men unsupervised visits since their July 20 arrest.

VP Chiwenga Pleads For Support

By A Correspondent- Vice President and Health Minister Constantino Chiwenga has pledged to restructure the Health sector in the country to improve service delivery.

He said:

I urge you to make sure we teach the community we are living in. We are restructuring the health system in Zimbabwe. We want to establish rural health care facilities up to hospitals. We want together with the ministry of Finance and the Health Services Board to see that what happened before will not be repeated. For us to achieve this i need your support. We must work together. CABS Manager Jailed Over US$710 Fraud

By A Correspondent- CABS Bindura branch acting manager Admire Fore was sentenced to 10 months in jail on Tuesday by Bindura magistrate Ethel Chichera for defrauding a client of his US$710.

The 36 year convict will however spend 240 hours of community service at Kandeya clinic in Mount Darwin after the magistrate conditionally  suspended the sentence.

Prosecutor Samson Chamunorwa told the court that on April 12 the complanaint Crispen Kambunga (55) deposited US$2600 in his nostrol account.

Fore hatched a plan to defraud $710 from Kambunga’s account.

In pursuit of his plan on July 25 Fore asked CABS cleaner Tracy Mugwangwavari to take a bank statement from a printer with the complainant’s particulars and hand it over to Fore.

The cleaner complied and was further tasked to fill in a withdrawal slip using Kambunga’s particulars.

After completing the withdrawal slip Fore gave it to one bank teller purporting to be friend with the complainant.

The teller processed the withdrawal and kept the money in his drawer intending to hand it over to the convict.

After knocking down duty the convict asked for the money and the teller told him he had forgotten it in the drawer.

Fore entered back in the bank while being captured on the closed -circuit television (CCTV).

Kambunga discovered that his money had been withdrawn and filed a police report.

Upon hearing that a police report had been filed Fore deposited back the money he had stolen on August 6 leading to his arrest.

Citizens’ Arrest On Transformer Thieves

By A Correspondent- Villagers at Dillion farm, Shamva teamed up and effected citizen arrest on three Harare suspected Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC), transformer thieves.

The matter came to light at Bindura magistrates courts on Tuesday where Jafali Pias Milaz (19), Munya Tinashe Magumise (26) and Zacharia Chiruwanda appeared before magistrate Amos Mubhobho.

The trio pleaded not guilty to the charge levelled against them . They were remanded in custody to  August 18.

The state-led by Samson Chamu alleged that on August 1 the trio drove to  Dillon farm in a silver Toyota Granvia registration number ADM 7205.

Upon arrival they were spotted by Edison Jisinawu buying some drinks at a local shop. He became suspicious of their move and advised the village youth chairperson Josphat Zvomuya.

Zvomuya mobilized scores of villagers to monitoring the trio’s move.

When the suspects arrived at the ZETDC transformer Milaz switched off power and they dismantled the transformer.

Soon after dismantling it, the villagers came to the scene and the suspects fled in different directions.

Villagers chased the suspects and caught them before handing them over to Shamva police station.

The transformer was recovered and ZETDC employee identified it. Their car is being kept at the police station as exhibit.

“The Energy Ministry Needs An Engineer Not An Accountant”

ZBC Effects Executive Management Changes

Regional Opposition Parties Mount Pressure On ED

“It’s A Stalemate”: Warns Analysts

On its part, the government has refuted the allegations – claiming instead that the opposition is allegedly working with foreigners to destabilise the country.

Opposition Demos Nonsensical: Zanu PF

ZanuPF Director of Information, Tafadzwa Mugwadi, Thursday said President Emmerson Mnangagwa should not allow opposition members to demonstrate in the streets because it is nonsensical and can lead to a spike in COVID-19 cases.

Zimbabwe has recorded 4 990 confirmed cases, including 1 927 recoveries and 128 deaths since March but the country has been rocked by a collapse in the health system and several reported cases of human rights violations by alleged state apparatus.

This has led to opposition members, civil society players and other citizens to call on the government to immediately deal with the issues but on its part, the Mnangagwa administration has reacted with vengeance by arresting, abducting or assaulting those who are calling for better lives.

In an interview with SABC News yesterday, Mugwadi said Mnangagwa should not sanction demonstrations by the opposition as they will worsen the COVID-19 statistics.

“Do you think President Emmerson Mnangagwa who has sworn to protect his people and this republic would allow those people to engage in that nonsense that they do on the streets in the name of democracy while COVID-19 cases spike and when they do you start saying Zimbabweans are dying in hospitals.
“You blame President Mnangagwa of failing to come up with a good strategy to fight Covid-19 and then you start again vilifying him…,” he said.

Mugwadi further stated that there is no crisis in Zimbabwe despite the situation on the ground suggesting otherwise.

“There is no crisis in Zimbabwe… but the question is which country across the globe is not facing a crisis of one way or other given the realities of this deadly pandemic called Covid-19 which has left a devastating effect on both the socio-economic and political establishments and fabrics of a country,” he added.

The crisis in Zimbabwe has led to interventions by SADC which saw South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa to send his envoys to assess the situation on the ground.

Information Minister, Monica Mutsvangwa yesterday said despite the envoys only engaged with Mnangagwa because the two share “brotherly” and diplomatic relationships

” This was at the peer to peer level of brotherly Heads of State of two sister nations that enjoy excellent diplomatic bilateral relations.  The envoys brought in their message which was duly delivered to the host President. In return, they received a briefing from President ED Mnangagwa. The reciprocal messages are the property of the respective leaders and it is their prerogative as to how they can be handled or disseminated,” Mutsvangwa said.

Media reports have been awash with allegations that the envoys snubbed opposition members and were coerced by the Mnangagwa administration.

Mine Shaft Collapse Kills Two Illegal Panners In West Nicholson

TWO illegal gold panners died after a shaft they were working in collapsed and buried them at a mine in West Nicholson.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident which occurred on Wednesday at Majoda panning site in West Nicholson at around 4AM.

He said Kenneth Mathuthu (22) and Prosper Mbedzi both from River Block area in Collen Bawn died on the spot.

“I can confirm that we recorded a sudden death case where two illegal gold panners died after a shaft they were working in collapsed. Kenneth Mathuthu and Prosper Mbedzi were working in a 12-metre-deep shaft at Majoda Panning Site in West Nicholson when the shaft collapsed and buried them underneath.

“The matter was reported to the police who attended the scene and the bodies of the two men were retrieved. They were taken to the Gwanda Provincial Hospital Mortuary,” he said.

Chief Insp Ndebele urged members of the public to desist from engaging in illegal panning activities as they were putting their lives in danger in addition to violating the law.

He said people that wanted to engage in mining activities had to formalise their operations and follow the correct procedures in order to acquire necessary paper work before operating.

“It’s sad that we continue to record a number of mine accidents as a result of llegal mining activities which are rampant in the province. If people want to engage in mining they should formalise their operations.

By engaging in illegal mining they will not only be committing an offence but they will also be putting their lives at risk as they will be operating without necessary equipment and protective clothing,” he said.

Chiwenga Warns Hospitals

You Risk Going The Same Way Mugabe Did, Mnangagwa Warned

Tinashe Muzamindo who is the Head of Zimbabwe Institute of Strategic Thinking – ZIST has penned the following piece in which he warns President Mnangagwa that he risks suffering the same fate as his predecessor President Rober Mugabe, of being ousted by his own deputies ortrusted friends.

Muzamindo opined:

When I looked at Nick Mangwana speaking, I simply said it’s all about pleasing his master, scrambling for few pieces falling from the master’s table, when I listened to George Charamba, he was spitting venom, remember this is the same George who was very close to Mugabe, the same guy who would pretend like he was in Mugabe’ s pocket, and he would defend him at any cost. Today, he is called Jamwanda, and this propaganda when the drama comes, they won’t be there to rescue you, all they do to conclude your journey in State House, is to laugh at you and say ” We tried our best, takambozvitaura”.

When I listened to Patrick Chinamasa, speaking from Zanu PF Headquarters, he was speaking like someone who is eyeing Finance Ministry for a second chance, all he could say is to defend anything which anyone can never justify. Let me categorically state it clear Mr President, all these people are simply doing it for their own supper, but deep down their hearts they are aware of what is right and wrong.

When you risk international isolation, you are out of the game, there are powers that you need for credibility, funding and diplomacy, and you cannot easily ignore Ramaphosa or South Africa, and get away with it. Patrick Chinamasa, when he Finance Minister, he was the same guy who would pump and heep praise on Former First Lady Grace Mugabe and the Former Zimbabwe leader, and he would go rogue and out of his way to praise Mugabe, on the very day of the military coup, he was already a changed vessel, in Highfield grounds, the same guy was now attacking Grace and Robert Mugabe in front of the whole world. Today, the same Patrick has run besserk attacking anyone who is perceived to be Mnangagwa’s opponent. President Mnangagwa be very careful with such characters, you need sound people around you, who can tell you the truth. Remember, these words.

Chinamasa, was the Finance Minister, he sat next to Mugabe, he would brief Mugabe on all budgets, before making an official move. We have Jamwanda , if you remember very well in AU meeting around 2008, he would go for a kill, when Mugabe was told by International media to step down, he nearly had a fist fight with some International media personnel, fighting for the former Zimbabwe leader.

South Africa envoy which Ramaphosa dispatched to Zimbabwe, was supposed to meet all key players in Zimbabwe. They were supposed to be briefed by everyone on the current situation. Ramaphosa appointed a special envoy as a response to the International outcry as a result of the popular hashtag ” Zimbabwe Livesmatter”, perhaps it was his last ditch to save his counterpart. Alas, the envoy left for South Africa without meeting anyone except Mnangagwa and his few cronies who declared ” There was no crisis in Zimbabwe”. My worry is those around you, who are feeding you with wrong information.

I listened to Lindiwe Zulu, the respected International Advisor, who openly castigated Mnangagwa. I listened to ANC leaders who openly told Mnangagwa about issues arising in their neighbouring country. This clearly shows the Zimbabwe leader is being isolated on International platforms. Think about this twice, why you are now being isolated from the whole International community. Nick and others can try their best, they have to sing for their supper, behind their back, they know exactly what is happening.

Let me say, you risk international pressure, and at the end, you risk sad departure. Remember, you need a legacy, a name, and you wouldn’t want to be remembered for a sad ending. You would love to be remembered for the good cause, you would want a situation where the council would seat down, or the local Government name roads after you, and you would love to have a farewell party, and bid your comrades a good farewell. From my own perspective, the route you have taken, I don’t see you getting to all this mantra. People one-day will reach a national consensus and it will be a sad day for you. This was an opportunity to redeem your name, and cleanse it from all the prejudice ( 1980 – 2017). It was an opportunity to redeem, and resemble the best.

Last but not least you can’t ignore all these groups and get away with it:

Mozambique In Turmoil But Mnangagwa Says SADC Region Is Stable And Speaks Of Credible Elections He Failed To Run In His Country

State Media

President Emmerson Mnangagwa

The SADC region remains stable and peaceful despite a few security challenges and the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic that has claimed thousands of lives, the Sadc chairman of the Organ on Politics, Defence and Security Cooperation, President Mnangagwa, has said.

But there was need to explore innovative ways of ensuring that member states were able to conduct credible elections during the Covid-19 pandemic, one of whose preventive measures was to avoid crowds and gatherings.

Officially opening the virtual Troika summit, President Mnangagwa commended member states for consistently demonstrating commitment to strengthening democracy, constitutionalism and the rule of law.

“I note with satisfaction that, notwithstanding a few political and security challenges and the ongoing pandemic, our region remains stable,” said President Mnangagwa.

Other members of the SADC Organ Troika are Botswana President Mokgweetsi Eric Masisi, the incoming chairperson, and Zambian President Edgar Lungu.

Zimbabwe will remain a member as Botswana takes over as the immediate-past chair.

SADC Executive Secretary Dr Stergomena Lawrence Tax attended the meeting.

In his address, President Mnangagwa said while elections held in the region satisfied SADC Principles and Guidelines Governing Democratic Elections, there was need to explore innovative ways to hold credible elections during pandemics such as Covid-19.

“It is equally important to ensure the safe and efficient deployment of SADC Election Observation Missions during such difficult conditions. Our organisation must also pursue sustainable and predictable means of funding election observer missions,” said President Mnangagwa.

He said as part of SADC’s liberation war heritage and historical legacy, the regional bloc was set to consider mechanisms of honouring its founding fathers as recommended by the Ministerial Committee of the Organ.

“In recognition of the contribution made by the founding fathers to the liberation of our region, it is my fervent hope that this mechanism will go a long way in inculcating a sense of patriotism, self-love and belonging among the peoples of our region, in particular the youths,” said President Mnangagwa.

After the opening address, the Troika Summit went into a closed-door discussion where it received reports from the Council of Ministers.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa attended yesterday’s meeting as SADC facilitator to the Kingdom of Lesotho which was represented by its Prime Minister Dr Moeketsi Majoro.

In their closing remarks, Dr Masisi and Dr Lungu commended President Mnangagwa for steering the Organ well during his tenure.

Dr Masisi said as incoming chairperson, he had a lot to learn from President Mnangagwa’s leadership that he demonstrated during his one year tenure.

In his last remarks, President Mnangagwa said the consolidation of democracy in the SADC region through holding of regular elections was commendable.

“I wish to urge the SADC secretariat to work closely with the United Republic of Tanzania and the Republic of Seychelles and other countries that will be holding elections during the Covid-19 pandemic towards safe and peaceful electoral processes,” he said.

Earlier on, Foreign Affairs and International Trade Minister Dr Sibusiso Moyo chaired a virtual meeting of the Ministerial Committee of the Organ where reports and recommendations were tabled for the consideration of the 40th SADC summit of Heads of State and Government to be held on Monday.

Dr Moyo was joined by his Zambian and Botswana counterparts, Mr Joseph Malanji and Mr Unity Dow.

THE MARCH IS NOT ENDED

Pastoral Letter of the Zimbabwe Catholie Bishops Conferenee On the Current Situation in Zimbabwe

14 August 2020

1. Introduction

John Robert Lewis, an American politician and civil-rights leader, who served in the United States
House of Representatives, died recently. At his funeral he was praised for recognizing that the march for freedom is not ended even in the present time in which we live.

This too is our challenge in
Zimbabwe today between those who believe in a past und completed liberation and those who realize
that the march is not ended. Peace building and nation-building are never completed tasks. Every
generation has to establish national cohesion and peace.

2. Current Ëvents

The struggle in Zimbabwe, between those who think they have arrived and those on the march has resulted ina multi-layered crisis of the convergence of economic collapse, deepening poverty, food insecurity, corruption and human rights abuses umong other issues in urgent need of resolution.

The call for demonstrations is the expression of growing frustration and aggravation caused by the
conditions that the majority of Zimbabweans find themselves in. Suppression of people’s anger can
only serve to deepen the crisis and take the nation into deeper crisis. This comes on the backdrop of
unresolved past hurts like Gukurahundi, which continue to spawn even more angry new generations.

The voices of various governments, the European Union, the African Union and the UN on the
desperate situation in Zimbabwe have not only confirmed the seriousness of human rights breaches by government agents but the need to rally behind #zimbubweanlivesmatter.

Following the government crackdown on dissent after the 31 of July demonstrations we have also witnessed attempts by President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa to intervene by sending a special envoy.

Their failure to make inroad consultations with the Church and civic society at this most tempestuous time was most regrettable. Was this not an opportunity missed?

In the meantime, some of our people continue to live in hideouts, with some incarcerated while others are on the run. Fear runs down the spine of many of our pcople today.

The crackdown on dissent is unprecedented.

Is this the Zimbabwe
we want?

To have a different opinion does not mean to be an enemy. It is precisely from the contrast
of opinions that the light comes. Our Government automatically labels anyone thinking differently as an enemy of the country: that is an abuse.

Corruption:
The ruler demands gifts, the judge accepts bribes, the powerful dictate what they desire” Micah 3

The comuption in the country has reached alarming levels. Government and civic society are agreed
that comuption is chocking the economy. and compromising our justice system. While there is this
acknowledgement there hasn’t been equally a serious demonstration by govermment to nd the country
of this scourge. The “catch and release approach makes the ordinary man in the street question the
sincerity of government to deal effectively with coruption. Is there no connection between what
some journalists are unearthing about the government officials’ endemic corruption and their arrest?

In Micah 7:1-6 the prophet is miserable over the state of his nation. Nobody can be trusted, and
people wait in ambush to do violence to each other. This sad and sory state, Micah says, is because leaders could not be trusted. they used their power for persoral gain.

Micah was from countryside, a prophet who proclaimed God’s reproofs to the rich and ungodly leaders of Judian.

Micah. like many of the prophets, champions the poor and the oppressed. With brutal honesty, he
communicated a message of justice and mercy. He cared for God’s people with profound compassion.
Micah graphically condemns Israel’s corrupt leaders and exposes their hypocrisy. God, the prophet
says, is not fooled when lenders mouth the right wors but have corrupt hearts. Political corruption, greed, arrogance was common amongst the leaders of his time. They didn’t care about the corporate or common good.

Micah says that when leaders lose their way, it is because they no longer see themselves as servant
leaders. They endanger everyone in the organisation or nation. Servant leaders place the interests and
needs of their followers ahead of their self-interests and needs. Generally. they value the well-being and development of their followers, building their communities, acting authenticaily, and sharing power.

The premise of servant leadership is that the most effective and infuential leaders are those who
strive to serve others rather than take control or be in charge. The servant-leader will continually think about what involves the least damage or pain for the people over whose lives they have power.
Servant leaders will value the worth of every person. The organisation or nation they build will honour the importance of every individual. The prophet Micah proclaims a message that is especialy relevant to the conditions we trace in our society and country.

4. Heroes and Defence Forces Days.

We have just celebrated the Heroes Holiday and the Defence Forces day in which we recall and express gratitude for the immense sucrifices made by our war heroes. Most of our people contributed
to the success of war effort in various ways. We remember Thomas Maptumo and others who
through their music conscientized the people about the struggle and the reasons for it. We know of
business men and women. teachers, the mujibhas and chimbwidos whose support was the difference
between winning the war and losing it.

As anation we must appreciate and be gratelul to those who
despite not holding a gun made an immense contribution of supporting the cause.

As your Shepherds we are sensing that our national leaders want to take us back to the mentality and practices of the war times where it was us against them We want our politics to build a united nation and not to divide us, turning the military who ought to continue the memory of the late heroes against the people who fed them and clothed them and who gathered intelligence at great risk and saved many of our fighiers from peril. Some of our vocal political leades are busy re-creating the war situation of us and them, abdicating from the responsibility to build a united nation.

Have we not all been divided by this divisive political environment to the detriment of the national common good?

As we recognize the sacrifices made by all our people towards our liberation, we continue to wory
about what has become of “gusa ruzhinji” the mantra of the war times and the 80s. This is only
possible when we build a robust economy capable of benefiting the poor and the marginalized who
perhaps because of the war lost opportunity to study and educate themselves or their ehildren.

While we understand the need to re-engage with the global cconomic community we ought as well not to lose sight ot the impoverished and marginalized Zimbabweans. For example. the newly signed
agreement between the Zimbabwean Government and the former Commercial farmers does not
feature or include the interests of the farm workers and their families who lost livelihoods.

While we appreciate the effort of resolving the land question, we think that it should also show concerm for the most vulneruble. It seems to us that Zimbabwe is driving itself fast in the direction of capitalism
thinking that this will bring untold benefits for our people. We need to be cautious as Pope Francis
reminds us, “Some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic
growth, encouraged by free market. will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and
inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naive trust in the goodness of those wielding cconomic power and in the sacralised
workings of the prevailing economic system.

Meanwhile the excluded are still waiting. To sustain a lifestyle which excludes others, or to sustain enthusiasm for that shellfish ideal, a globalization of
indiference has developed. Almost without being aware of it., we end up being incapable of foeling
compassion at the outery of the poor.”(Evangeli Giaudium 2013).

As your Bishops. we feel that this described situation is true of Zimbabwe. It feels as though the poor have no one to defend them. They don’t seem to feature on the national agenda. Their cries for an improved health system go unheeded. Their plea for a transport system that meets their transport
blues are met with promises and more promises and no action. The only time we see real action is
when our leaders are jostling for power. to secure it or to ascend to offices of power. It is not clear to us as your Bishops that the national leadership we have has the knowledge. social skills, emotional stability and social orientation to handle the issues that we face as a nation. All we hear from them is
blame of our woes on foreigners, colonialism., white settlers and the so-called internal detractors.

When are we going to take responsibility for uur own affairs? When are we going to submit to the
requirements of national accountability? While our neighbours in the region are strengthening their
democratic institutions, we seem to be weakening ours.

Our Chapter 2 institutions, the judiciary and Prosecuting Authority seem to be losing their independence and effectiveness. Our health care institutions have collapsed. Our well-trained doctors and nurses remain incapacitated. For a long time, they have felt neglected. As Bishops we have tried to open an honest dialogue on our health care personnel and the health care institutions and the door was shut in our faces.

In the face of growing numbers of COVID-19 infections where does the nation turn to? With the necessary tools in short supply in our hospitals, we notice with wounded hearts that government offieials seem to have more PPE than our nurses and doctors.

Nick Mangwana Blasts Catholic Bishops Conference For Calling On Govt To End The Sufferings Of Zimbabwean Citizens

State Media

Nick Mangwana

Government has taken note of a Pastoral Letter of the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishop’s Conference which curiously opens with a eulogy to an American politician and purports to speak to the current situation in Zimbabwe, Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Mr Nick Mangwana said.

In a statement he said; “Government reiterates that Zimbabwe, like most countries in the world is currently grappling with challenges attendant to illegal sanctions, drought and the Coronavirus pandemic. There is no ‘crisis’, political or otherwise. It is unfortunate that the Zimbabwe Catholic Bishop’s Conference has evidently joined the bandwagon of individuals and entities seeking to manufacture ‘crises’ in the country with the sole aim of achieving known political goals.

“To this end, the grouping deliberately ignores the following facts; President Mnangagwa and Government have demonstrated serious commitment to dealing with corruption through the setting up of the Special Anti-Corruption Unit (SACU) and re-empowering of the Zimbabwe Anti-corruption Commission (ZACC). Several high profile arrests have been made to date and the court cases are at varying stages.

“President Mnangagwa and his Government, have since inauguration, sought to implement policies that result in a robust economy in line with Vision 2030. Indeed, one of the President’s leading targets is for Zimbabwe to be an Upper Middle Economy by 2030. It is however, mischievously misleading for the Bishops to deliberately ignore the impact of illegal sanctions on the country, in their purported assessment of problems afflicting the country. Given the forces against it, natural and man-made, domestic and foreign, Government has managed to keep the country’s economy commendably stable.

“The President has consistently been the leading voice in acknowledging, appreciating and rewarding all who contributed to the country’s liberation, including the mujibhas and chimbwidos whom the Bishops seem to have suddenly and conveniently remembered. In that vein, the President has severally met with liberation war fighters to hear their concerns and views and has not in any way neglected them, neither has Government, which continues to explore ways of improving their welfare.

“The Second Republic, led by President Mnangagwa embarked on the first phase of the Land Audit which has now been completed. Following the audit, under-utilised land will be allocated in line with Government policy. It is Government’s wish that Zimbabweans at large aspire to own land and produce for their country instead of negotiating to be farm labourers

“Government continues to engage all stakeholders in the land issue and the signing of the Global Compensation Agreement in fulfillment of the Country’s Constitution does not in any way, undermine or close the door for farm workers to negotiate with their Government on any issue. Government is a Government for all.

The Zimbabwe Government remains committed to overcoming the present challenges bedevilling the country and ensuring a prosperous and democratic Zimbabwe for all citizens in line with His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s vision.”

Dolly Parton In Rare Political Comment

BBC

Dolly Parton

US country music star Dolly Parton has come out in support of Black Lives Matter, in a rare comment on politics.

She told Billboard Magazine: “Do we think our little white asses are the only ones that matter? No!”

With a broad fan base that spans the right and the left, the singer generally eschews political subjects.

Her comments come amid a nationwide reckoning on race that has impacted all of US society, including country music.

Although Parton has not attended Black Lives Matter marches, she said she supported anti-racism activists’ right to protest.

“I understand people having to make themselves known and felt and seen,” she told the music magazine.

What did Dolly say about Dixie?

The entertainment mogul – who owns Dollywood amusement park in her home state of Tennessee as well as other attractions – also spoke about her decision in 2018 to drop the “Dixie” from her Dixie Stampede attraction.

A 2017 article in Slate critiqued Ms Parton’s attraction, calling it a “lily-white kitsch extravaganza”.

“Dixie” was often used as a nickname for the southern states that made up the Confederate States of America during the US Civil War era.

US country band Dixie Chicks drop the Dixie from their name

“There’s such a thing as innocent ignorance, and so many of us are guilty of that,” she told Billboard. “When they said ‘Dixie’ was an offensive word, I thought, ‘Well, I don’t want to offend anybody. This is a business. We’ll just call it The Stampede.’

“As soon as you realise that [something] is a problem, you should fix it. Don’t be a dumbass. That’s where my heart is. I would never dream of hurting anybody on purpose.”

Why did she speak out now?

George Floyd’s death, and the subsequent nationwide protests, has impacted industries from publishing to sport to country music, inspiring some artists to join marches while forcing others to reconsider their own racial blindspots.

Two other country acts, the Dixie Chicks and Lady Antebellum, have dropped words linked to the Confederacy from their names, becoming The Chicks and Lady A, respectively.

President Donald Trump has taken the opposite approach, describing protesters as “anarchists” and condemning those who kneel for the national anthem.

Parton’s comments come as the 2020 presidential election campaign heats up, a stark contrast with four years ago when she assiduously avoided criticising Trump when he was running against Hillary Clinton.

In 2017, she remained quiet on stage at the Emmys next to Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda, when her former 9-to-5 costars decided to use the spotlight to slam the president.

More recently, in the popular WNYC podcast Dolly Parton’s America, Parton said: “If you hate the president so much, why don’t we pray for him?”

Feminist and LGBTQ icon

This is not the first time the 74 year old, who is seen as both an LGBT and feminist icon, has supported progressive causes.

She came out in favour of gay marriage in 2014, a year before it was legalised nationwide, spoke against anti-transgender “bathroom bills”, and supported the Me Too movement.

But her support for left-leaning issues is usually carefully crafted to be as inoffensive as possible, often urging people to “judge not lest ye be judged”.

“The sin of judging is just as bad as any other sin they might say somebody else is committing. I try to love everybody,” she told Billboard in 2014.

Mnangagwa Signs New Coroner Law That Will See Doctors Go To Jail For Sudden Deaths In Their Hands.

State Media

Police officers handling a case of a sudden death

HEADS of hospitals, police stations and prisons now face a five-year jail term if found guilty of destroying or tampering with vital evidence on the death of a person under their custody.

They will also be criminally liable for the death of a person under their custody should it be established that they were reckless or negligent.

The development comes as Government seeks to safeguard the sanctity of life from reckless or negligent institutions or persons.

Over the years, the High Court has been inundated with lawsuits against medical practitioners who negligently cause the death of patients.

In the past, there have been suspected cover-ups of such deaths by people in various positions of authority.

The new measures are contained in the Coroner’s Office Act, which was recently signed into law by President Mnangagwa after it sailed through Parliament.

“The following law, which has been assented to by His Excellency the President, is published in terms of section 131(6) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe — Coroner’s Office Act [Chapter 7:21] (No. 12, 2019),” reads a notice published by Chief Secretary in the Office of the President and Cabinet, Dr Misheck Sibanda

On the liability of health practitioners and law enforcement agencies, Clause Four of the Act reads:

“Subject to this Act, the functions of the Office shall be — (a) to provide independent and impartial investigations into the circumstances surrounding — (i) any unnatural deaths, including but not limited to homicides, infanticides, drownings, suicides, accidents; or (ii) any deaths occurring within 24 hours of admission into a health institution, or during a surgical operation, or while a person is in or is being escorted to a police cell, prison, health institution or other place of custody.” The Act establishes the Coroner-General’s Office, to investigate unnatural deaths that occur in health institutions, police cells, prisons and any other places through suspected unnatural means.

The Coroner-General’s Office will now replace a magistrate, who in the past used to conduct an inquest into deaths through suspected unusual circumstances.

In terms of the Act, officers-in-charge of prisons, police stations or medical institutions must keep records regarding such sudden deaths for proper investigations by the Coroner.

Failure to keep the necessary records or tampering with the information, will see those in charge of the institutions being jailed for a period of up to five years, according to the Act.

The same law criminalises refusal by medical practitioners to carry out post-mortems as directed by the Coroner, an offence that attracts six months’ incarceration.

Clause 7 of the Act states that custodial officers must keep medical records or any other relevant documents of the deceased for at least five years to allow investigations to flow unhindered.

The clause reads: “Where a person dies, while in any health institution for medical treatment or care or while he or she is in a place of custody, the custodial officer shall preserve all medical records, healthcare records and any other documents pertaining to the medical treatment or care or the custody of the deceased as are in his or her possession for a period as may be prescribed but in any event for not less than five years.

“A custodial officer commits an offence if he or she wilfully or recklessly destroys or fails to preserve medical and health care or custody records in terms of subsection (1) and shall be liable to a fine not exceeding Level 10 or to imprisonment for five years or both.”

The Act also sets out the appointment, functions and powers of the Coroner-General, the Deputy Coroner-General and the Coroners in relation to post-mortems, inquests and their findings. Holding careless doctors accountable for their actions comes amid an outcry over some surgeons whose negligence has led to the death of patients.

The office is expected to impartially carry out post-mortems, when necessary, and come up with forensic reports for use in court.

Cheeky Harare Man “Kidnaps” Curfew Enforcing Police Officers

State Media

Police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi

Two police officers were allegedly kidnapped on Tuesday night by a motorist they had stopped at a check point in Harare city centre set up to enforce the 6pm to 6am curfew.

The motorist, 31-year-old Tinotenda Zinyemba, was driving a white Isuzu KB truck when he was stopped by the officers near the intersection of Samora Machel Avenue and Chinhoyi Street. He was asked why he was driving during the curfew, which is allowed under certain circumstances.

But Zinyemba allegedly showed signs of resistance, prompting two of the police officers to jump onto his vehicle and ordered him to drive to Harare Central Police station.

Once the police officers were in the cab, Zinyemba drove off at high speed eventually getting to Mazowe Street and was driving north towards Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

Other officers manning the road block tried to give chase on foot to rescue their colleagues and arrest the motorist, but after a brief chase while Zinyemba was cutting around corners to get into Mazowe Street, had to give up chase once he had a clear run.

But, as fate would have it, Zinyemba drove into a second security check point at the corner of Josiah Tongogara Avenue and Mazowe Street. And this time he was blocked, arrested and taken to Harare Central Police Station.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, yesterday reiterated that it was a chargeable offence to fail to comply with officers when carrying out their duties.

“Members of the public are urged to cooperate with police officers and security services members who are conducting Covid-19 duties. The ZRP would like to strongly warn all motorists and the general public that all those who undermine the authority of the police will face the full wrath of the law.”

Cases where officers on duty are being kidnapped have been on the rise in the last few years and officers have been assaulted by motorists in a bid to evade arrest.

It is an offence under the Road Traffic Act to disobey directions and instructions, whether verbal or by signs, given by a police officer in uniform.

In 2013, six policemen on duty in Harare were kidnapped and attacked by a commuter omnibus crew and police have also recorded cases of attempted murder and one culpable homicide perpetrated on officers by kombi drivers and conductors.

Diasporans Fall Prey To Home-Based Relatives – Opinion

By Masimba Mavaza

Zimbabweans in the Diaspora are estimated at three million and it is generally considered to be a well-educated group, living mainly in Europe, South Africa and the United States of America.

Most Zimbabweans in the Diaspora have one mind and one mind only, to come back home and spend the final days with kinsman.

Being powered by such noble end, Zimbabweans work extremely hard with the aim of developing back home in order to have a soft landing when the winds of return blow them home.

Home is always best and indeed people itch to be home with all sorts of relations.

Zimbabweans abroad have done all in their might to invest back at home in many different areas.

Unfortunately, many of these have lost substantial amounts of money in their attempts to invest back home.

Mr Thomas Veremu decided to send a car to Zimbabwe.

His idea was his family in Zimbabwe would not have problems with transport.

He bought a beautiful Mercedes ML which was a seven-seater and assured his family that their transport problems would be over.

He made all the arrangements with a shipping company and within a few days the vehicle was in the sea towards Africa.

He was informed the ship would take three weeks to dock in Namibia and the car would be in Zimbabwe in days after that.

On the docking day, Thomas was asked to pay off his shipping and port charges which he gladly did.

Throughout the time he was kept informed of every inch the ship took.

After payment of the required fees Thomas did not hear from the shipping agent. He made several calls and could not get any response.

He tried all he could do to get in touch with the shipping agent, but it was not to be.

He lost his car and the shipping costs.

In the meantime, the family lost trust in him and started calling him names.

Thomas is not the only Zimbabwean who has lost his hard-earned cash to the Zimbabweans.

Meshack Johns tells a story of how he sent money home to his brother to build a house for him.

He spent five months being sent photos from the neighbours’ house.

All hell broke loose when he travelled to Zimbabwe. There was no house built and indeed he discovered the truth thousands of pounds later.

He discovered that his brother had lived a very extravagant life on the money he sent home for the house. He is still struggling with his mind whether he should go back to develop his home in Zimbabwe.

In 2018, Brian Sibanda, living in the UK, decided to build residential apartments in Harare, to rent out.

“I was working double shifts in a care home in the UK while my wife was working three jobs. According to our plan, the apartments would provide us with additional income,” he said with anger all over his face.

So Sibanda started sending about a thousand dollars to his brother every fortnight to facilitate the construction.

To reassure him, his brother regularly sent him pictures of the building under construction as well as the receipts for the building materials such as cement and quarry stones.

He was asked to send a lorry and a van which would be of great help in the project.

Trusting his brother with his life, he took a loan from the bank.

When he decided to visit and check on his investment later, in 2020, he had already sunk more than 50 000 pounds sterling into the venture. But to his shock and utter dismay, all the money had gone down the drain.

The brother became elusive and there was no construction project going on.

He wept when he narrated the story.

He discovered that the photos his brother had been sending him were not of his apartments, but someone else’s project.

His land lay bare, with not as much as a foundation dug.

“I was furious. My brother avoided me for a couple of weeks, but I finally cornered him at a relative’s house. When I confronted him, he had the cheek to ask me why I would get mad at him, his blood brother,” recounted Sibanda bitterly.

The distressed fellow, who had been in the UK for close to a decade at the time, contemplated suing his brother to compel him to pay back the money that had been pumped into the young brother’s non-existent business.

However, relatives advised him against it, saying such a move would strain relationships with the extended family.

“My wife and children were mad at me because of my brother’s actions and it nearly broke up my marriage,” he said.

Sibanda sold the land and resolved never to invest in Zimbabwe.

Many Zimbos in the UK have come with tales of how they have lost monies sent back home as an investment.

I have realised that Zimbabweans here are ignorant of how the property market back home operates.

With the news of ‘free’ land reaching the shores of the UK, some unscrupulous people have taken advantage of the people here who want to invest in property.

Now those who have burnt their fingers in the fire of trust strongly advise fellow Zimbabweans against sending money to relatives at home to invest on their behalf.

But sometimes the people living in the Diaspora are to blame for their naivety.

How can someone send thousands of dollars to an old mother who has never done a single property transaction in her life and expect her to buy him a piece of prime land in Borrowdale!

How can one send money to a little-exposed brother in Chitungwiza to buy him/her an apartment in Mount Pleasant?

Aren’t you deliberately throwing that person at the deep end where he/she will definitely drown?

It is critical to be professional and avoid relatives and friends when it comes to investing.

Deal with reputable firms.

There is an erroneous belief that those in the Diaspora have easy access to money which has led to relatives and friends having no qualms abusing monies sent to them to invest.

People overseas are working hard, hence their desire to invest back home.

Even when dealing with real estate companies, Zimbabweans living abroad still insist on involving their relatives to play a supervisory role.

This is not always a good option as it provides avenues for realtors to collude with relatives and swindle the Diasporans.

It is sad that some trusted relatives of those who wish to invest back in Zimbabwe often approach companies asking if they can inflate prices by several thousands.

When the companies refuse to do so, they call their relatives abroad and tell them that the firm is not legit and move on to the next firm that will agree to their unscrupulous collusion.

Many have lost their entire life savings.

Trucks and vans for transport businesses have been registered in other people’s names.

Relations have soured and broken down as a result of money.

It has become difficult for Zimbabweans to do much in the face of their relatives who are like vampires waiting to suck even life out of the pocket of the hard-working trusting Zimbabweans. –

Three Byo Man Strip ZESA Power Station, Arrested In Dramatic High Speed Chase

State Media

THREE suspects have been arrested in Bulawayo following a high speed chase with the police after they were found in possession of stolen Zesa Holdings equipment and cables worth thousands of dollars.

The three — Blessing Moyo (30), John Sibanda (24) and Braveson Dube (26) were arrested on Tuesday night after they evaded a roadblock along the old Victoria Falls Road near Amakhosi Centre at around 6pm.

They were travelling in Toyota Hilux pickup truck (ACB 6902) which they had loaded the stolen equipment.

On approaching the roadblock, police waved them to stop and they complied.

Police discovered that they were ferrying the equipment and asked them to explain why they were in possession of it and as the police was trying to verify, the trio jumped into their vehicle and sped off leaving the equipment.

Police gave chase and managed to arrest one of them. They made a follow up and arrested the other two suspects.

Investigations revealed that the trio had stolen the equipment at a substation in Bulawayo.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the arrests.

“We are investigating a case in which three men were arrested in Bulawayo after being found in possession of electrical gadgets used in the generation, transmission and distribution of electricity,” he said.

They will appear in court once investigations have been completed.

Zesa has been losing millions of dollars through vandalism and thefts of cables and equipment countrywide.

In October last year, President Mnangagwa said Zesa workers had a hand in the rampant vandalism and theft of electricity infrastructure which has cost the country millions of dollars and led to disruption of efficient power transmission across the country.

By that time the power utility needed at least US$40 million to replace over 4 000 transformers that had been vandalised across the country.

It had also lost up to 1 000 kilometres of power lines to cable thieves, according to reports.

Responding to a question on the matter during a plenary session at the 2019 ZimTrade Annual Exporters’ Conference in Bulawayo, President Mnangagwa said Government was disturbed by reports of power transmission disruptions linked to vandalism of electricity infrastructure and the attendant negative impact on ordinary people and business operations.

“We are convinced that those who steal transformers either work for Zesa or are related to Zesa workers because you need some degree of information and technology to steal these transformers, and you must know that there is some danger involved,” said President Mnangagwa.

“Transformers are being stolen countrywide and we need to find a way to stop this stealing.”

President Mnangagwa said Government came up with propositions on how to tackle the issue of transformers at two levels.

Recently, Cabinet expressed concern over vandalism of Zesa infrastructure and put into spotlight the effectiveness of the 10-year mandatory sentence for those convicted, with some stakeholders suggesting a 20-year sentence.

COVID-19 Update

It Appears Ramaphosa’s Envoys Never Had The Mandate To Find Out On Mnangagwa’s Human Abuses

Ringisai Chikohomero Researcher At Institute For Security Studies Pretoria

The South African special envoys being received at Harare State House.

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s special envoys arrived in Zimbabwe on 10 August and returned to South Africa the next day, leaving the situation as it was before with very little hope of change. Renowned journalist Hopewell Chin’ono and opposition activist Jacob Ngarivhume are still in prison, corruption continues unabated and the Zimbabwean government is as arrogant as ever.

The envoys snubbed the political opposition cancelling a meeting with the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC)-Alliance at the last minute. Zimbabwean citizens are now perplexed as they try to decipher what South Africa’s envoys came to do.

It seems the show was over before it even started. For a brief moment there was hope that South Africa’s government would call out the Mnangagwa administration on human rights violations. This followed weeks of sustained one-person protests (due to COVID-19 restrictions on gatherings) and Twitter campaigns against the arrests of prominent journalists and opposition activists, and a general despondency over the state of the country.

Ramaphosa’s government for the first time referred publicly to human rights concerns in Zimbabwe, in a series of tweets by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation. This is a marked departure from previous interventions where the department either avoided making any pronouncements on Zimbabwe, or issued a lukewarm statement bordering on solidarity with that country’s government.

In a marked departure from the past, Pretoria referred publicly to human rights concerns in Zimbabwe
The African National Congress (ANC), through secretary-general Ace Magashule, also came out strongly saying developments in Zimbabwe were ‘uncalled for.’ Such a bold response from the ANC is unheard of since the crisis in Zimbabwe started over two decades ago.

Even at the height of gross human rights abuses and political strife such as the 2008 run-off, the 2018 post-election violence and the brutal January 2019 crackdown on protests South Africa has always opted for quiet diplomacy and brotherhood. It has never outright condemned the excesses of the ruling Zimbabwe African National Union-Patriotic Front (ZANU-PF).

The #Zimbabweanlivesmatter movement has now apparently moved South African opposition parties to push the ANC government to act. The social media campaign by the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and its leader Julius Malema clearly hit the right chord.

The EFF called on Ramaphosa to rein in President Emmerson Mnangagwa with a threat to march to the Zimbabwean High Commission and push South Africa’s president to revoke the high commissioner’s credentials. So the dispatch of envoys could be seen as a response to EFF threats rather than a genuine desire to uncover the truth about developments in Zimbabwe, and find solutions to the long-running crisis.

ZANU-PF’s corruption, patronage and clientelism are unlikely to be resolved through talks
In diplomacy, the message is as good as the envoy who carries it. The composition and mandate of South Africa’s delegation is instructive in this regard. While former speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete is a high-ranking ANC member, she doesn’t have the political clout to be taken seriously by ZANU-PF, nor the gravitas and integrity to be respected by Zimbabweans in general. Mbete is seen as friendly with the Zimbabwean president and unlikely to be forthright with him.
Former minister Sydney Mufamadi is an expert negotiator who took part in Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) talks, but he has a blighted history of snubbing the Zimbabwean opposition.

With the pair as envoys, the mission was ill-fated even before it set off. The Mufamadi delegation snubbed the opposition and civil society that alerted the South Africa government to the crisis in the first place. For many Zimbabweans this diplomatic dispatch seemed more like a public relations exercise than a genuine attempt to find solutions.

What is Pretoria’s diplomatic endgame? It seems unlikely that the South African envoys had a mandate to gather facts, as they left without engaging with anyone but Mnangagwa. There is also no clarity about a definitive action plan to resolve Zimbabwe’s evolving crisis by Ramaphosa’s government.

Instead of sending envoys, Ramaphosa should put Zimbabwe back on the SADC agenda
Will South Africa’s recent interest in Zimbabwe’s problems lead to talks? Negotiation has been touted as key to resolving everything that’s wrong in the country. But on what basis would talks be held, and what might the agenda and outcomes be for antagonists bent on annihilating each other?

Corruption, patronage and clientelism are the lifeblood of ZANU-PF. These problems are unlikely to be resolved through talks. Plus ZANU-PF has no appetite for negotiation. It has a clear electoral mandate from the 2018 elections, and will play that hand to the end. There are no real incentives for the party to reform itself out of power and approaching ZANU-PF with kid gloves will only play into its narrative.

At the same time, the Zimbabwean situation cannot be the sole responsibility of South Africa to resolve. The Southern African Development Community (SADC) should lead a collective and unified response. For as long as SADC remains silent, South Africa’s hands are tied and ZANU-PF will continue down its wayward path.

Instead of sending envoys, Ramaphosa should galvanise a regional response by putting Zimbabwe back on the SADC agenda. At the very least this would send a clear message that member states will be held to account for human rights violations and that the regional bloc is watching.

High Court Dismisses Recalled MDC Alliance MPs’ Challenge Against Their Recall

State Media

The High Court has dismissing the urgent bid by 14 MDC Alliance legislators to stop MDC-T from replacing them in Parliament following their recall.

The 14 contested the 2018 harmonised elections on the MDC Alliance ticket. But the courts early this year ruled that the MDC-A was an electoral bloc formed by seven political parties in August 2017 to contest the 2018 harmonised elections not a political party. Thus any of the seven parties has the legal right under the Constitution to recall and replace those it nominated on the combined bloc list.

The MDC-T was the largest party in the MDC-A bloc, but the Supreme Court has found after a civil action that changes in the leadership since 2014 were not in accordance with the party’s own rules and nullified those changes, which included the elevation of Advocate Nelson Chamisa to MDC-T leadership. That meant that the MDC-T leadership of 2014 now runs the party and it is this leadership which is informing the Speaker of the National Assembly and the President of the Senate that certain members of the MDC-A bloc no longer represent their nominating party.

Bacilia Majaya, Mucharairwa Mugidho, Annah Nyambo and Nomathemba Ndhlovu were all members of the National Assembly while Senators Gideon Shoko, Helen Zivira, Tapfumanei Wunganai, Meliwe Phuti, Phylis Ndlovu, Herbert Sinamapande, Keresencia Chabuka and Siphiwa Ncube were elected in July 2018 through proportional representation.

They lost their seats in June this year, in terms of section 129 (1) (k) of the Constitution, which empowers a political party to expel a member occupying a seat in Parliament as its representative in the event that the member ceases to be its member. They are challenging the validity of their expulsion from Parliament in terms of the cited provisions, saying they were elected on an MDC-A ticket and have nothing any more to do with the MDC-T.

Justice Pisirayi Kwenda threw out their urgent chamber applications after they failed to prove that their recalls were unlawful. His judgment was based on his interpretation of the Supreme Court ruling and other undisputed evidence placed before the court.

The Supreme Court ruling early this year declared Nelson Chamisa an illegitimate leader of the main opposition party and restored Dr Thokozani Khupe as interim leader of all of the MDC-T until an extraordinary congress was convened to elect new leadership.

The expelled legislators, however, stuck to the Chamisa-led MDC Alliance.

In this regard, the judge found the legislators were in defiance of the Supreme Court order and the rule of law.

“They seem to be bent on enlisting the company of the High Court in circumventing the Supreme Court judgment,” ruled Justice Kwenda.

The judge disagreed with the parliamentarians’ argument, describing reliance on the Supreme Court judgment as a fallacy, saying this was regrettable.

“It is trite that the High Court cannot overturn a Supreme Court judgment. The legal profession derives its relevance from the application of the rule of law of which constitutionalism is the cornerstone. Jurisprudentially, Supreme Court judgments are collectively a source of law,” he said.

Justice Kwenda also found that the MDC-A legislators had a burden to prove, not only that they had contested their expulsion from Parliament, but also that their recalls by MDC-T were prima facie unlawful or that, on the face of it, the impugned declarations do not meet the requirements set out in section 129(1)(k) of the Constitution of Zimbabwe.

“In my view Section 129(1)(k) creates the rights for a political party to recall a member who is in Parliament as its representative when the member ceases to be its member,” he said.

The judge also said the pending applications on the same issue were also unlikely to succeed.

In their applications, the 14 argued that notwithstanding the Supreme Court judgment, which resolved the MDC leadership dispute, they did not belong to the MDC-T. They also wanted a provisional order declaring that MDC-T had no right to nominate persons to replace them in Parliament at all until the case, in which they are challenging the recalls, is decided.

The Constitution requires that once vacancies arise in Parliament, they must be filled within 90 days.

In opposing the two applications, MDC-T argued that the 14 ceased to be its members in June this year, insisting that the declarations it issued were and remained valid because they meet all the requirements set in the law.

The Speaker of National Assembly, Senate President and ZEC argued that they did not expel the legislators from Parliament, arguing that they had no quasi-judicial power to either approve or disapprove the expulsion of the legislators from Parliament by MDC-T.

It was also their argument that once vacancies occurred in Parliament by operation of the law, they must be filled within 90 days, thus they had no power to stop the constitutional processes.

Abducted MDC Alliance Gweru Member Charged With Threats To Kill Jacob Mudenda

State Media

MDC Alliance political activist and City of Gweru employee, Tamuka Denhere, (pictured) who had been abducted a few days ago, on Friday appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing charges of threatening to kill National Assembly Speaker Advocate Jacob Mudenda for announcing the recall of opposition legislators from Parliament.

Denhere, who was represented by lawyer and MDC Alliance National Assembly member for Mutare Central Innocent Gonese, is facing threats to commit murder.

The 40-year old activist was not asked to plead to the charges when he appeared before magistrate Mrs Barbra Mateko, who remanded him to September 1, for routine remand.

He was freed on $2 000 bail.

The State, led by Mr Lancelot Mutsokoti, alleges that on August 9, around 5pm, Denhere sent a threatening message to Adv Mudenda which reads: “Zvako zvauri kuita ma recalls ema MPs ndomagumo ako wakusvika kumagumo”.

Loosely tranlated, the message says by reading out messages recalling MDC Alliance MPs, Adv Mudenda would be killed for that.

It is said that after sending the message, Denhere went to his house in Gweru, where the police caught him on August 12, leading to his arrest.

A number of MDC Alliance MPs were recalled from the National Assembly at the height of in-house fights between factions led by Dr Thokhozani Khupe and Mr Nelson Chamisa.

Messrs Amos Chibaya (Mkoba), Murisi Zwizwai (Harare Central), Happymore Chidziva (Highfield West), proportionate representatives Bacilia Majaya, Macharairwa Mugidho, Virginia Muradzikwa, Annah Myambo, Francisca Ncube and Nomathemba Ndlovu, were recalled from Parliament.

Other legislators that were recalled are Messrs Prosper Mutseyami (Dangamvura), Charlton Hwende (Kuwadzana East), Ms Thabitha Khumalo (proportional representative) and Senator Lillian Timveos (Midlands).

Sikhala GofundMe Campaign Raises USD518.00 In 1Hour

Job Sikhala...

By Dorrothy Moyo | The Zengeza MP Job Sikhala’s rescue campaign raised USD518.00 in less than 1 hour on Thursday night.

Sikhala was hounded out of his home when journo Hopewell Chin’ono and politician, Jacob Ngarivhume were arrested 3 days before the 31st July demo. Since then, Sikhala has been roaming between Zambia and Zimbabwe as state agents hunt for him.

He has however been speaking daily addressing Zimbabweans and his latest program was on Friday night.

The call for fundraising was made by UK based female Zimbabweans who asked how Sikhala’s family is fairing during these trying times.

Sikhala is calling for authorities to respect the constitution of Zimbabwe and to uphold the rule of law.

USD390 was via bank account while the rest was directly through the GoFundMe website.

ZimEye will send the money next week Tuesday.

That Air Zimbabwe Jet Back In The Sky To Rescue 200 Zimbabweans In China.

State Media

Air Zimbabwe Jet

Air Zimbabwe is flying off to Guangzhou tomorrow night on another rescue mission to bring back home to Zimbabwe almost 200 students who have been stranded in China following the Covid-19 lockdown restrictions and the cancellation worldwide of most commercial flights.

Parents had been asked to pay at least US$1 000 each to bring back the students on the charter.

Air Zimbabwe had hoped that the outbound leg of the flight would be taken by locally based Chinese, who are being repatriated back home. However, the Chinese embassy are said to have made other arrangements.

For a while the students appeared destined for continued life of total desperation and hunger as Air Zimbabwe said they could not afford flying an empty flight to China.

Then Government stepped in and on Monday morning the happy ending starts when the students return home and are quarantined.

Air Zimbabwe has done incredibly well operating the one 767-200 on repatriation charters even though the last flight lasted more than a month due to their aircraft developing engine trouble in Thailand.

Chiwenga Vows To Deal With Hospitals That Are Demanding Clearance Certificates Before Treating Patients

New Ministers Promise Fireworks

Minister Anxious Masuka

Advocate Fortune Chasi was yesterday fired as Energy and Power Development Minister by President Mnangagwa who replaced him with Muzarabani North legislator Cde Soda Zhemu, while agricultural technocrat Dr Anxious Jongwe Masuka was brought into Cabinet as Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement Minister following the death of Retired Air Chief Marshal Perrance Shiri.

In an interview with state media following his appointment, the incoming Energy and Power Development Minister said he was coming into his new portfolio to play a part in helping Zimbabwe achieve an upper middle income society by 2030.

“I am happy to be given this responsibility by His Excellency the President. The energy sector is expected to play a big role in helping Zimbabwe achieve vision 2030 and I am motivated to help Zimbabwe achieve an upper middle income economy by 2030.

“I have experience in management and this will help me do my duties well in this portfolio, and I am looking forward to having a good working relationship with stakeholders,” said Cde Zhemu.

Dr Masuka, seen as an agricultural technocrat with a national and regional reputation, has held several research and management posts, mostly at high level, in his career.

He began in the teaching field as a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe (UZ) in the Department of Biological Sciences as well as at the Zimbabwe College of Forestry.

He has also worked at the Forestry Commission, the Tobacco Research Board where he rose to general manager, and before his appointment he was the chief executive officer of the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society.

Dr Masuka has cumulatively sat on over 30 boards and associations, and has been involved in consultancy work to projects in the field of agriculture, forestry, environment, public health and rural development in Zimbabwe, in SADC region and beyond.

He is a founding fellow of the Zimbabwe Academy of Sciences in 2004.

Bayern Thrash Barcelona

FC Bayern Munich

German champions Bayern Munich utterly humiliated Barcelona with a stunning 8-2 victory on Friday that sent them through into the semi-finals of the Champions League in an extraordinarily emphatic manner.

Thomas Mueller scored twice for a rampant Bayern, who led 4-1 after 31 astonishing minutes, as Lionel Messi and his teammates were condemned to a thrashing that felt like the end of an era for the illustrious Catalan club.

Both teams have been crowned European champions five times. But, while Bayern look to have a real chance of adding a sixth title next week, Barça are clearly facing major reconstruction work and it remains to be seen how many of those involved in this debacle will survive at the club.

The scoreline recalled Germany’s 7-1 win over Brazil in the 2014 World Cup, a game where Bayern coach Hansi Flick was on the bench as the national team’s assistant coach.

It began with Bayern grabbing a fourth minute lead when Mueller collected Ivan Perisic’s cross from the left and played a clever one-two with Robert Lewandowski before drilling home.

But within three minutes Barça had struck back – Clement Lenglet’s super long ball found Jordi Alba in space and David Alaba’s attempt to deal with his searching cross ended up flying past his own keeper Manuel Neuer.

Neuer then had to be quick off his line to foil a goal-bound Luis Suarez but was almost caught out by a cross-shot from Messi from the right which drifted through the area and struck the post.

But just as Barça seemed to have established themselves, the Germans regained their lead in the 21st minute — Serge Gnabry fed Perisic on the left and the Croatian glanced up to see his options before drilling past Marc-Andre ter Stegen.
Bayern then added the third as Barça’s defence was opened up again with ease.

Thiago Alcantara was given plenty of space in midfield to find Leon Goretzka whose superb ball picked out Gnabry, who had got behind Lenglet and then made no mistake with the finish.

Flick’s side were running riot and it got worse for Barca when a low cross from Joshua Kimmich was turned in at the near post by Mueller — another goal of ruthless simplicity making it 4-1 at the break.

The Spaniards desperately needed to find a way to shift the momentum after the break and Suarez, one of the few Barça players to emerge with any credit from the encounter, provided a route back into the game with a fine strike, in the 57th minute.

Jordi Alba found Suarez on the edge of the box and the Uruguayan jinked passed Jerome Boateng before blasting home.

But Bayern were in no mood to turn down the heat and six minutes later they restored their three goal advantage thanks to some outstanding work from their Canadian teenager Alphonso Davies.

The left back dribbled in from the flank, danced past Nelson Semedo to get to the byline and then pulled the ball back to fellow full back Kimmich to slot home and make it 5-2.

Somehow Bayern had managed to score five goals without their prolific striker Robert Lewandowski, who had scored in his previous seven Champions League matches – however, eight minutes from the end, the Pole put that right.

Substitute Philippe Coutinho, who is on loan at the German club from Barça, floated over a cross from the left which Lewandowski firmly headed home at the back post.

To add insult to the already painful injury, Coutinho then scored two more before the end, as Barcelona fell apart in unimaginable fashion to the brilliance of the Bavarians.

Bayern, who last won Europe’s biggest prize in 2013, will meet either Manchester City or Olympique Lyonnais, who play on Saturday, in the last four.-en.as.com

Tino Kadewere Jets In For Brother’s Funeral

Prince Kadewere

FRANCE-based Warriors forward Tino Kadewere arrived in the country yesterday for the funeral of his brother, Prince, who died in Harare on Wednesday.

Kadewere landed in Harare on Thursday afternoon and immediately went into quarantine in accordance with the Government health guidelines.

However, it is not clear if Kadewere would make it for the burial as Government health guidelines stipulate that returning citizens should be subjected to a minimum eight to 10 days and up to as much as 21 days in quarantine even if they test negative to Covid-19 and have no symptoms of the disease.

“Tino arrived in the afternoon yesterday (Thursday).

He has been in quarantine since then but efforts are being made to seek clearances from the authorities for him to attend the funeral of his brother,” said close sources.

Prince died at a local medical facility at the age of 40 after a short illness.

He will be buried tomorrow at the family’s rural home in Murombedzi, Zvimba, 110km west of Harare-The Herald

Harare Motorist Kidnaps Two Cops

Police

It is an offence under the Road Traffic Act to disobey directions and instructions, whether verbal or by signs, given by a police officer in uniform-The Herald

Free Political Prisoners Now

Continued Illegal Detention Of Kurauone, Chin’ono and Ngarivhume Is A Provocation We Can’t Fathom

14-08-2020

The continued illegal detention of our fellow citizens, Godfrey Kurauone, Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume for merely speaking against corruption is a direct provocation we cannot fathom.

Silence at this juncture while innocent civilians are languishing in prison for no apparent reason is betrayal.

It is very clear that by locking up those that questions corruption, the regime is showing us a middle finger.

In a country like ours with right thinking and normal citizens, this calls for a proper response.

We can not go on as if everything is normal whilst innocent souls are rotting in prison for exposing corruption.

It is time we take the initiative and effect citizen arrests on real criminals who looted public funds.

If the system do not provide justice, we are left with no choice but to provide citizen justice.

What Chin’ono, Ngarivhume and Kurauone said is exactly what citizens are saying in the streets, boreholes and market places.

We are Hopewell Chin’ono!

We are Godfrey Kurauone!

We are Jacob Ngarivhume!

MDC Alliance Slams “Daydreaming” Mutsvangwa

Monica Mutsvangwa

Farai Dziva|The MDC Alliance has described Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa as a pathological liar following her claims that there is no crisis of whatever magnitude in the country.

Responding to Mutsvangwa’s utterances, MDC Alliance Youth Assembly National Spokesperson, Stephen Chuma said :

What Monica Mutsvangwa is saying is typical of ZANU PF ostrich syndrome of burying the head in the sand while the nation is burning.

It is a public secret that the current crisis was brewed out of mismanagement and looting and at the apex of that are ZANU PF officials.

Those that stole Covid-19 funds are not from the opposition and so are those that prejudiced the nation billions of dollars under the veneer of Command Agriculture.

GNU has proved beyond any ounce of doubt that the opposition is not part of the problem but the solution to the current crises.

MDC Alliance Namibia Spokesperson, Robson Runyanya also blasted Mutsvangwa a statement below:

If there is no corruption as a crisis why did they fire Obadiah Moyo after the Covid-gate scandal? Why are they obstructing Beatrice Mtetwa to represent Hopewell Chin’ono? Why did they allow Obadiah Moyo bail after stealing more 60million US$ meant to save lives? Why are doctors and nurses are on a serious job action?

Why are council clinics and hospitals closing in Harare closing down as we speak right now. It’s just political ineptitude and bankruptcy we are witnessing in Zanu pf.

Bail is a right but Hopewell , Jacob Ngaribvumwe and Godfrey Kurauone are denied bail. Why are they abducting and torturing innocent citizens. Their elitist politics is the real malady that we need to confront.

They want to continue with their politics of denial. Monica Mutsvangwa is a daughter of Satan who feeds on human blood.

Their dirty Ian Douglas Smith’s antics will not help them to conceal the truth about lack of rule of law and constitutionalism.

Monica is a pathological liar who should shut up and brace for majority politics.

This Zanu pf mouthpiece is an advocate of arbitrary arrests, torture and gross misgovernance.

The history of Zanupf terrorists’ denial politics can be traced back to 1983 on the Gukurahundi genocide and their mentor Robert Mugabe had the guts to make a public confession saying it was a moment of madness.

Monica is also driven by their agenda of demonisation and soldierisation of the country by crushing all voices of dissent. The opposition is simply demanding their fair share of the national cake.

They are criticising the stinking corruption and daylight looting apparent in Zanu pf politics of the stomach.

The opposition is simply demanding their various freedoms enshrined in the constitution of the land.

Monica must abandon the colonial and apartheid books that are full dictatorship and lack of respect to basic human rights.

The blame on the opposition is just a scapegoat by Zanupf Bonapartists to maintain their grip on power through stifling social democrats and their democratic space. We are going to continue embracing dangerous freedom to emancipate ourselves from the yoke of Zanupf misrule.

Monica Mutsvangwa and autocratic masters and mistress should not confuse Nationalism and Liberation. We can’t have liberators with social, economic and political liberties in Zimbabwe.

We can’t be fooled to celebrate flag and national anthem liberation by greedy Zanupf morons. She must shut and reform.

The opposition wants to see a liberated Zimbabwe respecting the dignity of his people. To hell with all the devil incarnates in Zanu pf. We shall fight until we see the change that delivers.

Mnangagwa Fires Own Deputy During Vice Presidency…

Emmerson Mnangagwa has today with immediate effect fired the man who loyally deputised him during his Vice Presidency, the Energy and Power Development Minister Advocate Fortune Chasi and replaced him with little known Soda Zhamu.

It never rains but pours for Chasi who was the sacrificial lamb, while personally assisting to boost Mnangagwa’s reputation during the Grace Mugabe days when he, Mnangagwa, was Vice President, and Chasi deputised him in the Justice ministry.

The statement from Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda alleged that Chasi’s conduct had become incompatible with Mnangagwa’s expectations.

Electric Cable Thieves Arrested

Herald

Wife Bashes Hubby

A DRUNK man from Pumula North suburb in Bulawayo ran to a police station to report his wife for beating him up after he allegedly called her a prostitute.

Narrating the dramatic incident pitting Victor Mahlangu (30) against his wife Sharai Sibanda (29), a family friend who spoke on condition of anonymity said Victor arrived home drunk and spewed derogatory verbal attacks on his wife.

“He came home dead drunk and headed straight to the bedroom where his wife was sleeping and insulted her saying she was a prostitute.

It happened so fast as he grabbed her by the neck and strangled her. But his wife managed to free herself from the tight grip of his hands.

Sharai grabbed his private parts and twisted them causing Victor to fall in agony,” said the family friend.

The family friend said Sharai who was seething with anger turned her drunk hubby into a punching bag with fists.

“She left him bleeding from the nose and mouth,” said the source.
Victor, the source said, crawled from the bedroom to the kitchen and his wife followed him and struck him with a cup on the head.

“She struck him once on the head with a dinner cup and it broke on his head. He then staggered to a police station where he reported the case,” said the source.

Sharai was arrested.
Bulawayo police spokesperson Inspector Abednico Ncube confirmed the incident and advised community members to live in harmony.

“Suspecting each other in a marriage does not help as it foments trouble which could lead to a break-up of the union. However, it is important to develop trust and respect for each other.

Therefore we urge community members to stay in harmony. When a couple faces problems in a marriage they should seek help from pastors or community leaders,“ he said.-B-Metro

Abducted MDC Alliance Man Charged With Threatening To Kill Jacob Mudenda | TRUTH or NONSENSE?

MDC Alliance political activist and City of Gweru employee, Tamuka Denhere who was abducted earlier in the week, yesterday appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts facing charges of threatening to kill National Assembly Speaker Advocate Jacob Mudenda for announcing the recall of opposition legislators from Parliament.

The state media said the words translate to say, Adv Mudenda would be killed for recalling MDC Alliance MPs.

The state media says that after sending the message, Denhere went his house in Gweru, where the police caught him on August 12, leading to his arrest.

-state media

Marauding MaShurugwi Nabbed

MaShurugwi

A GROUP of illegal gold miners on Tuesday invaded Tebekwe Mine in Shurugwi where they reportedly disarmed a security guard before handcuffing and severely assaulting him and his colleague using logs and iron bars.

Police in Shurugwi swiftly moved in and arrested eight suspects, some of whom were reportedly advancing towards the milling plant where they wanted to steal gold.

According to the mine manager, Mr Thamsanqa Maseko, the illegal miners were armed with iron bars and machetes and threatened to harm everyone at the mine.

They ordered the milling plant to stop running and declared that they were taking over the mine.

They were about 50, the majority armed with machetes and iron bars, said Mr Maseko. They went around the mine’s milling plant singing and stressing that they were taking over the mine.

We did not know that there was another group, which had attacked the security guards at the mine entrance.

Mr Maseko said police swiftly responded to their emergency calls and arrived at the scene to find the two security guards, including the one who was in handcuffs, being assaulted.

Upon seeing a police truck, the illegal miners fled in different directions, but police managed to arrest eight of them, he said.

One of the security guards was stabbed in the ear with a sharp object and was taken to Shurugwi District Hospital where he was admitted.

The other security guard who was disarmed and handcuffed was beaten with iron bars all over the body, said Mr Maseko. The handcuffs were later removed at Shurugwi Police Station.

Midlands police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed the incident, but said he was still to get full details from officers in Shurugwi- The Herald

Illegal Gold Panners Die In Mine Shaft Collapse

Mine

TWO illegal gold panners died after a shaft they were working in collapsed and buried them at a mine in West Nicholson.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele confirmed the incident which occurred on Wednesday at Majoda panning site in West Nicholson at around 4AM.

He said Kenneth Mathuthu (22) and Prosper Mbedzi (age unknown) both from River Block area in Collen Bawn died on the spot.

By engaging in illegal mining they will not only be committing an offence but they will also be putting their lives at risk as they will be operating without necessary equipment and protective clothing.

“Some of these illegal miners operate in the early hours of the morning in order to evade police not knowing that they will be risking their lives,” he said-Chronicle

Mnangagwa Warned: “You Will Go Exactly The Same Way As You Did To Mugabe. “

Mnangagwa with Mugabe

Tinashe Muzamindo who is the Head of Zimbabwe Institute of Strategic Thinking – ZIST has penned the following piece in which he warns President Mnangagwa that he risks suffering the same fate as his predecessor President Rober Mugabe, of being ousted by his own deputies or trusted friends.

1. Zanu PF your own party

2. ANC and South Africa

3. Main opposition ( Alliance & Nelson Chamisa)

4. Africa Union

5. Civic society and other groups

6. Ordinary Zimbabweans

7. EU and other International partners

8. Former Regional leaders like respected Ian Khama

9. Church leadership

10. Special envoys dispatched by respected regional leaders

Mnangagwa Fires Own Deputy During Vice Presidency

Former Zim Boxing Champion Dies

State Media

FORMER champion boxer, Morgan Maphosa, died on Wednesday.

He was 59.

His family said he succumbed to cancer.

Maphosa began his boxing career in the 1980s and won the vacant Zimbabwe bantamweight title by being Percival Stranger at Vengere in Rusape in 1985.

After his retirement, he joined the referees and judges panel.

Maphosa died at his rural home in Rava Village, in Mberengwa, and was laid to rest yesterday.

His nephew, Clifford Phiri, said the death was a big blow to their family.

“My uncle passed away on yesterday (Wednesday) at home,’’ said Phiri.

“He returned home from Harare, some three weeks ago, complaining of a backache and he has been here where we were taking care of him.

“He was a pillar of strength in the family.

“He retired from fighting around 1990/1991. He won several titles in Malawi, Zambia, the Bahamas and on home soil during his career.

“After he retired, he got some refereeing badges. He worked with several boxing officials.’’

Veteran referee, Patrick Mukondiwa, said Maphosa was one of the pillars of the sport.

“He is someone who had the sport at heart after he started off as a boxer,’’ said Mukondiwa.

“After his retirement, he managed to acquire some badges for refereeing and judging. He was someone who was willing to learn.

“We have lost a companion who loved the sport whole heartedly,” said Mukondiwa.

Boxing promoter, Clyde Musonda, said Maphosa was one of the sport’s father figures.

“We are poorer without Maphosa, he was an inspiration for some of us when we ventured into boxing,’’ said Musonda.

“He was a good fighter and it is a loss, not only to his family, but the nation at large.’’

Exploring Mnangagwa’s Anxious – Soda Cabinet Appointments

NewZWire

Anxious Masuka

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has made two Cabinet changes that throw contrasting light on his leadership.

First, Mnangagwa fired Energy Minister Fortune Chasi, just as the Minister was out in the public fighting ZESA executive chairman Sydney Gata over claims of corruption. Chasi’s “conduct of Government business had become incompatible with the President’s expectations,” a statement said. No detail was given.

In Chasi’s place is now Soda Zhemu, MP for Muzarabani North, who is so little known that there has been a hunt online for pictures of the man. The only account of Zhemu’s professional record, given on the Parliament website, is that he worked as an accountant at Cottco Sanyati and as a regional manager at another cotton company until he retired in 2017.

In July, Chasi ordered the ZESA board to investigate allegations of corruption against Gata. However, Gata moved swiftly and fired the board instead. But on August 6, Mnangagwa then suspended Gata and gave the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission four weeks to investigate Gata.

Gata himself, through proxies, has alleged Chasi had corruptly benefited from ZESA, including having air tickets paid for by the company. There are also suggestions that Gata and Chasi clashed over the controversial Gwanda solar project, where Chasi wanted Wicknell Chivayo to be allowed to continue with the project. Gata is said to be opposed to it.

However, with no other information given on his firing, Chasi’s sacking reflects badly on Mnangagwa himself. Worse, Zhemu as a replacement looks like a case of picking a random name from a hat, as long as it is someone who can be bent easily.

Inside ZANU PF’s Mashonaland Central structures, Zhemu may not be so anonymous. In 2018, a month after elections, Soda said “even God himself had confirmed the presidency of Emmerson Mnangagwa”. In his own election, Zhemu got 17 098 votes against the rival MDC-Alliance candidate’s 1 161.

So, from a distance, it looks like Mnangagwa has, yet again, just gone for a loyal man who won’t question his decisions, as Chasi did on Gata.

There is also internal party politics at play. Mashonaland Central, for long a bastion of support for ZANU-PF, supplying such national leaders as Joice Mujuru, Chen Chimutengwende, Border Gezi, Elliot Manyika, Nicholas Goche Edward Chindori-Chininga, Chris Kuruneri and Saviour Kasukuwere, has looked decidedly lightweight of late. Perrance Shiri, the province’s leader since 2018 until his recent demise, was not from there and many were unhappy about that.

While removing Chasi, who is also from Mashonaland Central, Mnangagwa had to look within the province, or risk further alienating an already disenchanted key voting region. Home Affairs minister Kazember Kazembe, a Cabinet novice, is the only other minister from the province.

In February 2018, Mnangagwa was forced to make three additional Politburo appointments from Mashonaland Central, after the political leadership in the province protested at being overlooked.

Not so anxious
Then, there was the not-so-bad appointment. Anxious Masuka, Mnangagwa’s new Agriculture pick, is not as surprising as the one at Energy, at least on the face of it.

Masuka is widely respected in the industry. He is an academic who has written extensively on farming and forestry. More importantly, he has served in the private sector as Chief Operating Officer at ZSE-listed agro-processor Ariston, and as CEO of the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society (ZAS). So, he knows farming.

However, as many technocrats appointed to key offices in this government have found out many times, it’s not just the qualifications that count. Masuka takes over a Ministry that needs not just industry expertise, which he has in abundance, but strong political clout.

The man Masuka is replacing, the late Perrance Shiri, was at his death panned by political opponents, given his role in Gukurahundi and the military. But he was also praised by farmer groups, including the Commercial Farmers Union, once a foe of the Ministry.

What Shiri lacked in professional qualifications – and Masuka has piles of those – Shiri made up for in political influence, and Masuka doesn’t have a lot of that.

Shiri’s political clout allowed him to push through changes that were welcomed by many in the industry.

In John Basera, Masuka will find a competent Secretary at the Ministry. Appointing Masuka shows that Mnangagwa, while still a political animal as ever, still has some respect for professional competence. But it will take more than that.

Masuka’s in-tray is full of key issues that will need his qualifications, definitely, but also some political muscle. After three successive droughts, Zimbabwe is badly short of grain and needs a plan, quickly. In addition, Shiri was driving the farm “downsizing” programme, a politically dicey plan to cut farm sizes.

He backs cutting farm sizes, but wrote last year, in a ZAS report, that “generally, land availability remains the least impediment to increased production”. Instead, he said, it was the lack of funding and technology.

Energy and Agriculture are two key ministries.

Ministers don’t always need to be experts in the fields they are running, although they need some policy clarity and competence.

The Zhemu and Masuka appointments show what it takes to get into, and to stay in, a Mnangagwa Cabinet. Firstly, those who are loyal will be rewarded, but they need to stay in line. Secondly, technocrats are welcome, but they need their own political clout to survive.

Hopewell Chinono Sent Back To Prison Until Tuesday As Trial Within A Trial Drags On

Beatrice Mtetwa

Detained journalist Hopewell Chin’ono will remain in custody until August 18 when Magistrate Ngoni Nduna is expected to rule on the suitability of his lead defence lawyer to continue in that position.

The State, led by Prosecutor Whisper Mabhaudhi is pushing for lead lawyer, Beatrice Mtwetwa to recuse herself from the case on allegations of disrespecting the courts.

Mtetwa is alleged to have posted on “her” Facebook page titled Beatrice Mtetwa and the Rule of Law saying: “Where is the outrage of the international community that Hopewell Chin’ono is being held as a political prisoner?

“His life is in serious peril. Raise awareness about his unlawful imprisonment. Do not let him be forgotten. You or someone you love could be the next one abducted from your home and put in leg irons. SPEAK OUT”.

But Mtetwa, who is representing Chin’ono in a case in which he is being charged with inciting public violence, argued that the allegations of contempt, stemming from a Facebook page being run using her name, had no legal basis.

She denied being the owner of the page and was backed by her client Chin’ono who said the page belonged to a film documentary maker who is not based in Zimbabwe.

The matter has become a trial within a trial, as Mtwetwa was before the courts to re-apply bail for Chin’ono on changed circumstances.

She accused the State of “trying to choose a legal counsel for the accused which is completely unheard of.”

“Prosecutor Mabhaudhi is calling on the courts to remove the lead counsel from the case and we finalised the submissions today,” said lawyer, Roselyn Hanzi after the trial.

“The Magistrate has said that he needs time to write the ruling which he is going to deliver on Tuesday, 18 August, so that means the bail application is not going to proceed until we have the ruling and we know the position of our lead counsel Beatrice Mtetwa in this case.”

The decision by the magistrate means, Chin’ono, who was arrested with politician, Jacob Ngarivhume on the same charges, will spend yet another weekend in prison and will not know his own fate until the fate of his lawyer has been decided.

A number of attempts to have both the High Court and Magistrates Court grant them bail have so far failed.

This forced their lawyers from the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR) to re-apply for bail on changed circumstances given that the date for the planned action passed, with the demonstrations considered a non-event.

The hearing for Chino’no’s new application began on Wednesday before Nduna following the Heroes and Defence Forces holidays while that for Ngarivhume was pushed to Monday.

But Chin’ono’s hearing took a twist when the State alleged that Mtwetwa, through a social media page being run using her name, had disrespected the courts.

Meanwhile, the High Court granted an application by Chin’ono and Ngarivhume challenging the suspension of their rights in prison, with the court ordering the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services to allow the two access to their lawyers food and clothes, within reasonable administration restrictions, access to doctors of their choice and personal protective equipment in light of the Covid-19 outbreak while in remand prison.

The ruling followed complaints by the defence that their clients were being denied time and privacy with their lawyers as well as food provided from outside prison.

Fortune Chasi Inevitably Lost The Fight Against Mnangagwa’s Mukwasha

ZimLive

Fortune Chasi

President Emmerson Mnangagwa sacked Energy Minister Fortune Chasi on Friday saying “his conduct of government business had become inconsistent with the president’s expectations.”

Mnangagwa named little-known Muzarabani North MP Soda Zhemu as Chasi’s replacement.

Mnangagwa also named Anxious Jongwe Masuka as his new minister of lands, agriculture and rural resettlement, replacing Perrance Shiri who died on July 29 from Covid-19.

The 55-year-old Chasi, previously deputy transport minister, replaced Jorum Gumbo as energy minister in May 2019 as the country battled its worst energy crisis on record.

A combination of higher electricity tariffs to fund imports and increased inflows at Kariba Dam where the country draws most of its electricity have eased power outages which lasted up to 18 hours at the peak of the crisis.

Chasi had however battled to get a handle on the fuel crisis which has persisted for several years. The government recently allowed private importers to sell fuel in foreign currency as the country appears to be returning to full dollarisation.

Chasi’s exit is believed to be linked to his recent bruising battle with ZESA’s executive chairman Sydney Gata who has been married to Mnangagwa’s niece, Angie Mayahle, since 2014.

Late last month, the Mazowe South MP suspended Gata over corruption allegations, but Gata hit back accusing him of abusing his power and calling him an “impediment to my efforts… to uprooting corruption at ZESA”. Gata also dismissed Chasi’s directive to other board members to investigate him, stating that “the directive is contrary to the law and cannot be acted upon.”

Gata also told Chasi that he was seeking to activate the mediation role of the Office of the President and Cabinet “without delay.”

Mnangagwa subsequently suspended the entire board at the power utility while ordering an investigation into the allegations of wrong-doing. It was not clear on Friday if the “mediation” led to Chasi’s dismissal.

Gata has two children with Angie, described by some as Mnangagwa’s “most-loved niece.” She has reportedly invested in several solar projects, backed by Mnangagwa, with the aim of selling power back to ZESA.

Chasi was criticised for re-appointing Gata to ZESA after he previously left under a cloud of corruption allegations – but sources say the appointment was made on Mnangagwa’s directions.

When corruption allegations recently surfaced against Gata, Chasi saw an opportunity to elbow him out – a fight he would inevitably lose, and with it his ministerial job.

Meanwhile, Mnangagwa said Masuka – who has no parliamentary seat – has sat on 30 agriculture-related boards since 1991 including the Tobacco Industry Advisory Council; the Agriculture Research Council and the Zimbabwe Seed Trade Association.

He joins the Cabinet from his job as CEO of the Zimbabwe Agricultural Society.

Just Who Is This New Minister Of Agriculture? Many Could Be Asking?

Minister of Agriculture Anxious Masuka
  1. Anxious Jongwe Masuka is an agriculturalist whose career in agriculture spans for over 32 years since he graduated from college in 1988.
  2. Masuka is an academic who holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Agriculture majoring in Crop Science from the University of Zimbabwe and he holds PhD from the same university, he has published over 6 publication while affiliated with Tobacco Research Board
  3. He Is the current Chairman of the University Of Zimbabwe Council
  4. He is the current Chief Executive officer of Zimbabwe Agricultural Society
  5. He sits on the following boards: Tobacco Industry Advisory Council, Zimbabwe Seed Trade Association, Agricultural Research Council, National Economic Consultative Forum, International Mycological Association.

Masuka is the new Agriculture Minister, a technocrat who was appointed by President Mnangagwa today following the death of the former agriculture minister Perrance Shiri

“MDC Alliance Must Build Strong Alliances Regionally And Internationally”

By Sindile Ncube| We are seeing how the support for the Mnangagwa regime is faltering in the SADC region, and understandably so.

In addition to his misrule of Zimbabwe, the human rights abuses and the systematic corruption, Mnangagwa is not a likeable character. He is not an African hero.

His life story lacks heroism or any of the pan Africanism from which Mugabe derived a lot of his support in Africa. Mnangagwa’s political history is that of using violence and intimidation.

There is not a single moment in history where you can say Mnangagwa did this for the Zimbabwean people, not a single one. That’s says a lot about him.

How can someone who has been at the top of government since 1980 not have a single moment of heroism or decency towards his own people?

This lack of a humane back story makes it easy for people around the region and even in his own party to stop supporting this man.

In the light of this, I believe that Chamisa needs to build alliances with people within SADC, starting with the various opposition parties in those countries.

Yes, Chamisa needs to make friends with influential bodies in Zimbabwe as well.

He needs to find common ground with influential people who are also frustrated by Mnangagwa and his government – and that list of people is growing.

The Zimbabwean people already don’t like this man, and have made that very clear, but those in Zimbabwe are being battered for having that point of view.

The world at large is realising that this man is a fraud and worse than Mugabe, which takes some doing by the way. The people in the region are finding it hard to defend him and his party.

This gives the MDC Alliance an opportunity to make new friends and strengthen allegiances.

The more Mnangagwa is alienated from influential people within the region, the faster his removal will be.

Even the Chinese need to realise that this guy is not wanted by his own people.

Who would have thought that someone like Malema would publicly expose Mnangagwa in this manner?

Zimbabwean Christians And Church Leaders Honestly Not See The Regime’s Evil Ways – Why Are They Silent?

By Tendai Ruben Mbofana

As a devout Christian, there is one thing that I have never been able to wrap my mind around – that is, can most Christians and Church leaders in Zimbabwe honestly tell me that they can not see the barbarous evil being perpetrated by the country’s ruling elite on a largely defenceless innocent population, whose only desire is to live an oppression-free prosperous life, where every citizen is accorded their God-given dignity and respect, equitably enjoy the abundant wealth that Jehovah bestowed on this great nation and its people, as well as those entrusted with leadership being held accountable for their deeds?

As Christians, can we seriously tell the millions of Zimbabweans – obviously, the vast majority of them being Christians, as over ninety percent of the population confess to be of this faith – who have been sadistically reduced to miserable paupers, who have to survive on less than one United States dollar (USD) a day, and forced to survive on food handouts – whilst, the small elite opportunistic ruling clique live lavishly, as a result of the mass looting of national resources that God, by His abundant wealth of grace, blessed us with, so that each and every citizen may benefit – that we can not see all this, or do not care?

What do we tell those hard-working men and women (our parents and grandparents), who sacrificed their entire lives, with their sweat and tears, in an effort to develop this beautiful country into a prosperous paradise for everyone – yet, lost all their pensions, insurance policies, and life savings, which cruelly vanished into thin air, as a direct consequence of the corrupt and warped selfish government economic policies that merely sought to serve those in power, at the expense of the majority?

Who today, can not even afford a ten kilogram bag of mealie meal – let alone, a decent meal, critical medication (as they are now elderly, and prone to various ailments), and other necessities – in spite of having diligently prepared for their retirement, but have been turned into beggars by a heartless regime.

What are we to say to the countless wives, husbands, children, and parents of those gallant human rights and political activists who disappeared without a trace (and still have not been accounted for), whilst numerous ordinary citizens, investigative journalists, lawyers, labor and social justice defenders have been viciously butchered, abducted, tortured, sexually abused, beaten up, or arrested on questionable charges – merely for doing what we, as the Sons and Daughters of the Almighty Jehovah, and His representatives in this world, are expected to do…that is, holding those placed in positions of authority, on behalf of God, to account for their actions and decisions?

Are we, seriously, going to tell them that we never saw what was taking place? Or, are we going to say that we were too afraid to stand up, or speak out? Or, are we going to wash our hands, as Pontius Pilate, and claim that these abominable acts by the ruling establishment have nothing to do with us?

Nothing to do with us? Afraid of the Devil, and his workers of iniquity?

Surely, why would we even believe that? How can we even fathom such evil thoughts? Are we not ashamed?

As a beloved wise cousin of mine so aptly put it this morning – which inspired me to write this article – “Christians are more afraid of death than God”. Such, unadulterated truth, which is so painful that it immediately moved me to write, even though I had absolutely no plan of doing so today.

As Christians we need to ask ourselves these pertinent questions: Was Moses not afraid of death when he confronted the ruthless Egyptian Pharaoh, demanding him to let God’s people go? Possibly he was, as he was the same Moses who had fled his most comfortable and privileged royal life in Egypt, after killing one of its soldiers, only to end up living in exile for forty years.

Nonetheless, by the power of God Almighty, he had the courage to return and boldly face Pharaoh – no matter the possible consequences – and stood firmly by Jehovah’s grace, in consistently and relentlessly demanding the freedom of His people, even though, Pharaoh’s heart increasingly became hardened.

The same God-given courage – through the Holy Sprit – in the face of imprisonment, torture, and even death, was witnessed by various biblical prophets, and the Apostles of Christ, who neither quivered nor crumbled in standing up, and speaking out the truth of Jehovah, against some of the most powerful, merciless, and murderous men and women in world history.

Were noble and acclaimed men and women of God, such as Rev. Martin Luther King Jr, wrong in fearlessly fighting against institutionalized racial segregation and oppression in the United States – leading to his assassination?

Why, then, are we different? Did Christ not say, “He who loves his life, will lose it”, as He warned all those who would rather submit to the fear of death, instead of valiantly standing up for God’s truth, irregardless of the possible fatal and brutal consequences?

Does the Bible also not say that, it is most profitable to die for righteousness, than to die due to sin? As such, where do we find ourselves today, as Zimbabwean Christians?

Why is it that, when the government wanted to enact a law that supposedly equated extra-marital relationships with solemnized marriage, we never wasted any time in loudly voicing our condemnation? When some groups advocated for the legalization of homosexuality, we rightly resisted.

Does it, then, mean that we see absolutely nothing wrong with a ruling elite that shamelessly plunders the country’s vast wealth for itself, leaving everyone else wallowing in abject poverty? Or, that we are alright when innocent defenceless people are savagely killed by those with the might of the brutal state security apparatus?

In fact, it is so disturbing witnessing some amongst us, who are actively supporting, defending, and teaming up with, such damnable acts – and, blasphemously doing all this in the sacred name of Jesus Christ!

If that is the case, then we need to honestly pray to God, and ask Him to reveal to us the true nature of our faith – are we sincerely after His heart, or are we simply hypocrites, whose relationship with Jehovah is transactional, as we seek Him only for what we can get from Him, rather than standing up for what He represents – righteousness, love, and protection of the weak and vulnerable against agents of the Devil, whose sole objective is to kill, steal, and destroy?

For most certainly, to Jehovah God Almighty, #ZimbabweanLivesMatter
