Guardiola Not Leaving Manchester City

Farai Dziva|Pep Guardiola will remain at Manchester City until the end of his contract, according to the club’s chief executive Ferran Soriano.

There are doubts over the Spaniard’s future after reports emerged suggesting he will leave Etihad before his deal expires in 2021.

The gaffer who won two successive league titles with City has been linked with a return to Barcelona.

“Pep has said so many times that he has a contract that covers this year, plus next year too,” Soriano told Goal.com.

“There is no discussion about this. Pep will stay and he’ll leave at the right time one day – and the club is strong enough to survive any change.

“But as Pep said many times, he’s not leaving.”

Guardiola moved to City in 2016 and his side have won seven trophies during his tenure.

BREAKING – Marry Chiwenga Sent Back To Prison Till 2020

THE ESTRANGED wife of the vice-president, Retired General Constantino Chiwenga, Marry Mubaiwa, has been further remanded to the 14th of January 2020 when she appeared for routine remand at the Harare magistrates court this Monday. Her High Court bail and appeal hearings are set to be heard this Tuesday. Marry Mubaiwa is facing charges of attempted murder of her husband, the vice president Rtd Gen Constantino Chiwenga, externalisation of foreign currency and fraud. Marry has since denied allegations that she had tried to kill her husband, the vice president. In the 13-page bail application at the High Court, the 38-year-old Mubaiwa denied attempting to kill vice president Chiwenga and said the charges were fabricated. She also argued that her former husband had brought the murder charges against her in an attempt to force her hand in divorce proceedings that are pending in the high court. Mubaiwa who was remanded in custody on the 16th of December 2019 is facing charges of attempted murder on vice president Chiwenga, externalisation of foreign currency and fraud. Mubaiwa told the court through her lawyers that her alleged offence occurred when the vice president was already physically frail and nursing injuries sustained in a bomb attack in Bulawayo in June last year. In denying charges of attempting to murder her husband, Mubaiwa told the high court that Rtd Gen Chiwenga had asked President Emmerson Mnangagwa to make arrangements to have her sent to China, where he was being treated, and also gave her money. Mubaiwa said in her bail application that President Mnangagwa “even sent his personal security with US$30,000 for her personal upkeep and use”. All this occurred after July 2019, Mubaiwa’s lawyers told the court, adding that “it is inconceivable that this would have happened had she tried to murder her husband”. As part of her bail conditions, Mubaiwa said she was willing to pay ZWL$10,000 as a bail deposit, surrender her passport to the court and report once every fortnight on Fridays at Borrowdale Police Station, in Harare. Her lawyers asked that the former model be released on bail pending the commencement of her trial. Mubaiwa said she was in poor health, traumatised and had lost weight owing to the ordeal she had endured since being arrested. Her lawyers told the high court that Mubaiwa was a mother of young children who need their mother’s care. “Pre-trial detention will deny them of that,” they argued. They added that Mubaiwa had no capacity to flee the country to escape prosecution. — state media – This is a developing story

South African Singer Dedicates Song To Katsande

A South African musician, Mrivi T, has dedicated an Amapiano song to Zimbabwean midfielder Willard Katsande after music heavyweights DJ Maphorisa and Kabza De Small did a track on Orlando Pirates player Thembinkosi Lorch.

The song was released this week and its lyrics praise Katsande’s performances on the field.

The 33-year old who has made over 250 appearances for the Soweto giants is one of the longest-serving players in Chiefs squad alongside goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune. He arrived at the club in 2011 from Ajax Cape Town.

Katsande is also the vice-captain of the team and has spent the majority of 2019 with the armband following a long injury spell of Khune.

And now reports in South Africa are suggesting he could extend his stay at Amakhosi as his current deal is set to expire in July 2021.Soccer 24

The report from FEWSNET also said food aid requirements will persist even after the harvest, the population’s food needs will not be fully satisfied as food security will be stressed.

The report reads in part:
The population in need of humanitarian assistance across Southern Africa will remain high throughout 2020. In worst-affected areas of the region, Crisis (IPC Phase 3) outcomes will likely persist during the post-harvest period.

In late 2020, at the start of the 2020/21 lean season, FEWS NET anticipates regional food assistance needs will increase even higher than needs during the first quarter of 2020.

There was a severe drought in 2019 that left half the total population in need of food aid .

Can Zimbabweans Trust Bishop Mutendi?

By Jeffryson Murisi David Chitando

Bishop Mutendi’s utterances in Bulawayo in which he described the MDC as house of a lost sheep are blasphemous.

Bishop Mutendi further mentioned that Zimbabwe doesn’t need an international mediator.

Bishop Mutendi must understand that Zimbabwe is not a family project like Zion Christian Church (ZCC) which he inherited from his father Samuel Mutendi.

Bishop Mutendi, you must find an internal mediator in the ZCC dispute.

The late Samuel Mutendi left a united ZCC but due to selfishness the church is now divided.

The people of Zimbabwe know that the ZCC divisions are family based meaning that the Bishop has totally failed to mediate in family disputes -is he the right person to mediate in the Zimbabwean crisis?

US Affirms Its Relations With The Non Existent Republic Of Wakanda.

Own Correspondent|The United States has announced in a statement that it will continue to maintain strong relations with the fictional country of Wakanda.

According to reports, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) had ‘accidentally’ registered Wakanda on its online list of nations that have free trade agreements with the United States. Announcing its decision to remove the fictional country (and admitting its mistake); the department has said in a statement that its relationship with Wakanda will remain strong.

The Kingdom of Wakanda is a fictional country and the home of Black Panther – a Marvel superhero. It is portrayed in comic books and the 2018 blockbuster movie as an isolated African nation with the most powerful technology on the planet. It appears the United States Department of Agriculture has fallen for the well-scripted representation of Africa just like movie lovers all over the world.

“While we removed the Kingdom of Wakanda from our list of U.S. free trade partners, our relationship will always be strong #WakandaForever,” the United States Department of Agriculture tweeted from its official account on Thursday.

A spokesman told The Washington Post that inclusion of the mythical African nation from the universe of Marvel superheroes was a mistake made as part of a test, officials were running.

Francis Tseng, a New York-based software engineer who was looking for data on U.S. agricultural tariffs for a fellowship he is pursuing, first noticed the reference to Wakanda on the U.S. tariff list and called it out on Twitter.

“I was very confused at first and thought I misremembered the country from the movie and got it confused with something else,” Tseng told Reuters.

Before it was removed, Tseng managed to download an Excel sheet listing “Harmonized Schedule” tariff codes for various categories of goods traded between Wakanda and the United States including live animals, dairy goods, tobacco and alcohol.

After the list was corrected, Tseng tweeted: “Well, the USDA took Wakanda off the list. Guess we’re in a trade war with them too.”

There was no USDA entry for vibranium, the fictional metal from space that is the source of Wakanda’s power.

Marvel is owned by Walt Disney Co (DIS.N).

Parents In The Diaspora Sending Their Children Back Home To Teach Them Discipline.

Own Correspondent|Zimbabwean parents in the diaspora are reportedly sending some of their children back home to so they get to learn African values and manners.

A Zimbabwean parent based in the UK said that ‘powerless’ parents felt they had no choice but to send some of their kids back home as laws in that country fail them in declining their children.

She said most families from Zimbabwe were flying their children back home to learn discipline and respect.

‘They’re resorting to taking their kids to boarding school. And to be cared for by their grandparents back home,” she said.

‘It’s seen as a retreat. It’s like a time-out.’

Tshengi Mlilo of Bulawayo said she was aware of six families who had made the tough decision, including a girl who was going to parties with the wrong crowd.

She said at least two families had seen their children return and go on to get jobs or study at university.

Mlilo said some families decided to send their children back home because of growing gang problems in the diaspora communities.

Fearing their kids could be caught up in the violence, they decided to act.

‘Things are stricter back home. There’s very little uncontrolled drinking or substance abuse,’ she said.

‘The schools are quite harsh. The kids have to perform well.’

Highlanders After Nomadic Coach Mark Harrison

State Media|BRITON Mark Harrison is reportedly in negotiations with Highlanders to take up the vacant head coach post, a source close to the gaffer told Chronicle Sport yesterday.

According to the source, Harrison is “90 percent” likely to return to Zimbabwe, six months after quitting Harare City to take charge of Highlanders, a side he “adored because of its following” during his two coaching stints in the country.

Harrison had a four-month stint as head coach of Caps United in 2015 before moving to Botswana’s Township Rollers where he spent two seasons, finishing second in the 2015/16 season and winning the title the following season. He moved to Harare City at the beginning of 2018 and stayed for one and a half years.

“Harrison has been in talks with Highlanders and he really sounds interested in the job. He feels he has recharged and is ready to return to the dugout. There are a couple of things that the two parties are ironing out, but he (Harrison) adores Highlanders because of its followers, structure and history. At this point, I can say chances that he will sign are 90 percent,” said the source.

The Highlanders’ coaching job fell vacant when Hendrik Pieter de Jongh officially notified Bosso last week that he will not renew his contract when it expires tomorrow despite being offered an improved deal.

Highlanders are also said to be keen to add Bulawayo Chiefs coach Thulani Sibanda to their technical staff.

In his Christmas message to Bosso supporters, club chairman Kenneth Mhlophe said everything is “under control” and they are not panicking.

Asked about Harrison, Highlanders spokesperson Ronald Moyo said: “The club management is working around the clock to ensure that the pre-season season kicks off timeously and perfectly. A statement regarding the structure of the technical team and other team news will be issued when the time is right.”

Harrison holds a Uefa A licence badge and previously coached Oxford United, Stafford Rangers and Everton in the United Kingdom as well as Mpumalanga Black Aces and African Warriors before his spell with Chippa United in South Africa.

He began his career in 1977 playing for Southampton in England as a trainee. After three years he moved to Port Vale where he immediately became the first-choice goalkeeper for the “Valiants”.

He had a brief loan period at Stoke City and thereafter returned to Vale Park where he enjoyed a 46-game stint for the team before being sold to Stoke City where he stayed for a brief period.

He then moved to South Africa and played for Hellenic.

Harrison went straight into football coaching after retiring.

Police Identify 19 Year Old Lady Who Died At ZEC Commissioner’s Music Concert

Winky D was main act

Police have identified a woman found dead in the wee hours of Sunday morning after she was trapped for a considerable period of time by a security fence at a cricket ground in Bulawayo.

The woman has been named by police as 19-year-old Shantelle Sibangilizwe Ndlovu of Cowdray Park suburb.

According to Chief Inspector Precious Simango of Bulawayo police, officers attended the scene following reports of a woman hanging from razor wire. Said Simango:

Police attended the scene and found the now deceased semi-conscious, hanging by a jacket from the stadium perimeter wall with her feet on the ground.

Police then removed her from the wall and laid her on the ground in a recovery position. She had visible scratches on her neck which were attributed to the razor wire.

Police searched her and found in her possession a sachet of an unknown brown powder substance. She was taken to Mpilo Central Hospital where a doctor certified her dead upon arrival.

Police officers reportedly turned down offers by members of the public who had volunteered to drive Shantelle to hospital.

According to ZimLive, ambulances services failed to respond because there was no fuel.

Rwanda’s Kagame, Tanzania’s Magafuli and Burundi’s Kurunziza Declare Plans To Retire, But Not Zimbabwe’s ED.

Winds of change: Rwanda's Kagame, Tanzania's Magufuli, Burundi's Nkurunziza to quit

Own Correspondent|Rwanda’s president, Paul Kagame on Thursday reiterated his commitment to walk away from the presidency when the current term he is serving expires in 2024.

Similar commitments by Burundi’s president Pierre Nkurunziza, Tanzania’s John Pombe Magufuli and Kenya’s Uhuru Kenyatta have ignited debate in the East African region on the politics of long-serving presidents.

Kagame and Uganda’s president Yoweri Museveni are among the continent’s longest serving presidents, having been in office for 20 years and 34 years respectively.

Rwanda’s Kagame

Kagame, who was reportedly addressing the 17th Annual National Dialogue said he was not interested in seeking a fourth term, adding that he wished to be replaced by a female president.

‘‘My wish is that one day, a woman takes up this position that you gave me,’‘ Kagame told delegates.

The 62-year old had earlier told a summit in Doha, Qatar that he is not likely to run for office in 2024.

Tanzania’s Magufuli

Earlier this month, Tanzania’s Magufuli pledged to respect the constitution that stipulates a two-term limit for the office of president.

‘‘I have been insisting that I will respect the constitution and laws governing the country after completing my term in office,’‘ Magufuli said while launching a water project in the Geita region.

Magufuli said he is determined to discourage Tanzanians from harbouring such thoughts, arguing that all 55 million Tanzanians have the ability to lead the country, with the help of God.

Burundi’s Nkurunziza

Burundi’s Nkurunziza also restated his position on seeking another term in office, saying he will not contest next year’s elections.

The 55-year old told journalists he would hold another press conference “before handing power to our successor’‘, having also told security forces that it was the last time he would give them his holiday wishes as Burundi’s leader.

His insistence on running again in 2015 led to deadly political turmoil and allegations by human rights groups of widespread abuses.

Zimbabwe’s Mnangagwa

Zimbabwe’s ruling party early December this year gave the go-ahead to President Emmerson Mnangagwa to run for a second five-year term in 2023, all but ending speculation the 77-year-old would step down for one of his deputies at the next election.

Mnangagwa came to power in November 2017 after veteran leader Robert Mugabe was forced to resign following an army coup. He was then elected in a July presidential vote that his main opponent Nelson Chamisa of the MDC says he won fraudulently.

“I Am Too Old To Be Violent,” 75 Year Old Assault Accused Man Claims

A 75-YEAR-OLD man from Bulawayo accused of axing his neighbour, told a court he is too old to be violent.

It is alleged that Stewart Sdubi from Emganwini suburb struck Mr Simon Moyo (65) with an axe on his left ear after delivering an eviction letter at his home.

Mr Moyo had to be rushed to the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) for treatment.

Sdubi pleaded not guilty to assault before Western Commonage magistrate Ms Tancy Dube.

He was remanded out of custody on free bail to today for continuation of trial.

“Your worship, Moyo is the one who assaulted me first and I pushed him. He fell on top an axe. I don’t have all that energy to lift an axe. He only got angry because the letter I had given him from the City Council indicated that he was supposed to vacate his home and he vented his anger on me,” he said.

Prosecuting, Mr Tapiwa Solani said on November 20 this year, Sdubi went to Mr Moyo’s place holding an axe and a letter.

“The accused person gave the complainant a letter to read and as he was reading, the accused person struck him with an axe,” he said.

Mr Moyo said he was suspicious when Sdubi came to his home in the evening holding a letter and an axe.

“The accused person came at night and knocked on my gate saying there was a letter that I needed to read. I went outside and while I was reading, the accused person attacked me with the axe and ran away,” he said.

The matter was reported to the police leading to Sdubi’s arrest.

Mnangagwa Begs Churches To Help Him Run The Country.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has begged churches to complement Government efforts in running the country.

Mnangagwa said this while addressing thousands of congregants during the third edition of the annual National Thanksgiving and Dedication Service at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Grounds In Bulawayo.

He said the country’s economic growth hinges on collaboration between the Government and churches, among other players.

“Indeed, we recognise the important role played by the church as you intercede for peace, harmony, unity and development in our nation as well as for the country’s leadership in general. Guided by the Word of God, you the church have a vital role as we pursue the objectives of the national vision and confront a world with its many challenges,” said President Mnangagwa.

“Meanwhile, the Bible says in James 2 v 14, ‘Faith without works is dead.’ We recognise the many developmental projects and philanthropic works done by the churches of Zimbabwe in general. These include schools and health facilities dotted around the country and we acknowledge your contribution to various sectors of the economy.”

He urged churches to increase productivity in all their projects in pursuit of Vision 2030.

“We encourage you to increase productivity in all your respective projects, collectively as churches and in your individual pursuits. Vision 2030 depends on investment by each and every one of us for its success. Let us all put shoulder to the wheel and work for Genesis 3 v 19 says, ‘In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return,” said President Mnangagwa.

He urged churches to continue playing a key role in protecting society’s moral fibre through preaching the gospel of love, peace, justice and forgiveness at household and national level.

“A strong spiritual leadership is integral as it influences the nation’s conscience and curbs wayward tendencies,” said President Mnangagwa.

Turning to devolution, he urged churches to promote local economic development through the utilisation of local resources.

“God gave us dominion over all things here on earth. During our lifetime, let us be good stewards of all that has been put under our care for the benefit of generations to come. Let us leverage our God-given resources to grow our economy. As we accelerate the implementation of devolution, I urge the church to promote local economic development from ward level upwards, through the full utilisation of resources found within our communities,” he said.

President Mnangagwa reiterated that the country would not revert to the multi-currency system and urged citizen to embrace the local currency.

“No country can develop without its own currency. As you are aware, we are now using our own currency and I urge all of us to accept it, use it and be proud of it and also defend it from all forms of attack. There is no going back to the multi-currency system,” he said.

The President said his Government remains committed to transforming the economy into an upper middle income in line with Vision 2030, despite illegal sanctions imposed on Zimbabwe by the United States, UK and their allies.

“As Government, we are accelerating our quest to speedily attain Vision 2030, to become a middle-income economy. In 2020, we will focus on ensuring higher productivity across all sectors of the economy, creating decent jobs, empowering our people and satisfying their needs to improve their standard of living,” said President Mnangagwa.

He said the programmes to ensure the availability of affordable transport and healthcare were ongoing, with more Zupco buses expected to be delivered in the coming weeks.

The President said the Government has ordered more drugs and equipment for health institutions.

He said the Government will continue to ensure that vulnerable communities access food relief, including speeding up the rehabilitation, development and modernisation of infrastructure.

President Mnangagwa also appealed to churches to pray for more rains and a good harvest in light of the impact of climate change.

He commended churches and the generality of Zimbabweans for embracing the national clean-up campaign, which is conducted every first Friday of the month.

“As we strive to restore a spirit of cleanliness in our nation, I am pleased to see that the church is playing an active role in the national clean-up programme. Deuteronomy 23 prescribes that there must be a designated place outside the camp where refuse is disposed of. In the New Testament in 2 Corinthians 7, we are instructed to cleanse ourselves from the rubbish that might cling to us,” said President Mnangagwa.

“We also thank the Lord for the enthusiasm with which Zimbabweans from all walks of life and of all ages have embraced this programme. “POLAD Partners Do Not Keep Good Ideas In Their Back Pockets,” Mnangagwa

Own Correspondent|President Mnangagwa yesterday lauded leaders of opposition parties under the Political Actors Dialogue (Polad) for what he called “their zeal and commitment towards nation-building and unity.”

The President said this while addressing thousands of congregants during the third edition of the annual National Thanksgiving and Dedication Service at the Zimbabwe International Trade Fair (ZITF) Grounds in Bulawayo.

“I find it most refreshing to be working with leaders who do not keep good ideas in their back pockets as political capital for later, but who come forward with those ideas for the sake of our beloved country and that is patriotism. The spirit of unity among us while still respecting and accommodating our rich diversity, views and opinions must be a part of all of us,” said the President.

“Let us continue to love one another as one people united by one flag, national anthem and by the love of our Lord Jesus Christ.”

President Mnangagwa met leaders of opposition parties at his farm outside Kwekwe in the final Polad meeting for the year to review progress as well as mark National Unity Day on December 22.

Polad, a platform for political parties that fielded presidential candidates in the 2018 harmonised elections to contribute to social, economic and political progress, was launched in May this year and 18 political parties were represented.

President Mnangagwa advised parties that continue to undermine Polad that there was power in unity.

Main opposition, the MDC, led by n Nelson Chamisa has rejected POLAD preferring to talk exclusively to Zanu PF, claiming other parties were not necessary.

Update: Machete Wielding Thugs Murder Police Officer At ZANU PF Backed Mining Fields.

State Media|A policeman was clubbed and hacked to death on Saturday and his colleague was seriously injured, while defending workers at Good Hope Mine in Battlefields from an invading criminal gang armed with machetes, logs, axes and catapults.

The invaders are reported to be the gang known as “Team Barca”, formerly led by Taurai Mutandwa who was shot dead during the David Whitehead gold rush in Chegutu.

The killing and assaults on police are suspected to be in revenge.

Police have launched a manhunt for the culprits, with crack teams from the Support Unit, District Reaction Group (DRG) and the dog section already on the ground.

Yesterday, a high-powered police crack team led by the Officer Commanding Mashonaland West Province, Assistant Commissioner Francis Muswere, and Officer Commanding Kadoma District Chief Superintendent Kezias Karuru, convened a meeting at ZRP Battlefields to direct operations against the gang.

Constable Wonder Hokoyo (27) was first disarmed by a blow to the head with a log before his body was cut and chopped by gang members wielding machetes and axes.

His colleague, identified as Constable Kamhuka, was referred to Kadoma General Hospital, where his condition is said to be stable.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the attacks.

“Police are investigating an incident which occurred at Brompton Mine in Battlefields, Kadoma, where some artisanal miners engaged in violence and in the process, attacked police officers who had been deployed there,” he said.

“One police officer was struck with a machete and died, the other one was attacked and is currently admitted at a local hospital. Police are strongly warning people who are engaging in acts of violence that certainly, the law will take its course.”

Asst Comm Muswere said police had intensified the investigations. “We have dispatched our Support Unit, DRG and dog section into the area to make a follow up on yesterday’s (Saturday) incident. Everyone is on the ground and we are looking for leads. This operation will bring the culprits to book,” he said.

It is reported that at around 11am last Friday, Cst Hokoyo was deployed to Good Hope Mine with three other police officers to deal with an invasion by artisanal miners.

On Saturday, at around 2pm, the suspected killers together with many others still at large, proceeded to the mine armed with machetes, catapults and axes and forcibly took control of the mine shafts, dispersing the company’s workers who were extracting gold ore.

The police officers deployed fired warning shots to disperse the illegal miners, but they did not leave.

Instead, they advanced towards the police, disarmed them and assaulted them.

Cst Hokoyo and Cst Kamhuka were hit on the backs of their heads with logs, disarming them, before the gang closed in for the fatal assault and inflicting the serious injuries on Cst Kamhuka before he managed to escape.

This forced the other officers to retreat.

The body of the slain policeman was taken to Kadoma General Hospital Mortuary for post-mortem.

President Mnangagwa has repeatedly condemned violence and lawlessness among artisanal miners, and warned that perpetrators will face the full wrath of the law.

There have been numerous reports of violence among artisanal miners who invade mining claims while attacking competitors with machetes, and even outrightly grab other miners’ gold or the cash they earn.

Some have since been nicknamed “MaShurugwi” or “Vemabhemba” as reports of violent clashes over the control of mining claims continue across Zimbabwe.

Traditional leaders from Shurugwi have expressed concern over the labelling of their people as being behind the spate of killings and robberies in gold mining areas.

The chiefs said it was unfortunate that both mainstream and alternative media platforms and high-ranking officials were perpetuating the “MaShurugwi” label.

The “Mashurugwi” tag has become synonymous with violent machete-wielding gangs that terrorise gold panners, either to forcefully grab one’s gold or proceeds from a transaction or a gold-rich mine.

Mnangagwa Says Chiwenga On Indefinite Sick Leave

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has indicated that Vice President Constantino Chiwenga has gone back to China for an indefinite period on medical grounds.

He revealed this yesterday while addressing congregants at the third edition of the annual National Thanksgiving and Dedication Service in Bulawayo.

“I wish that as we pray, we also remember to pray for Vice President Chiwenga who is back in China for medical review. He will be back in the country soon,” said President Mnangagwa.

VP Chiwenga returned home last month after a four-month stay in China.

Upon arrival back home, the Vice President thanked President Mnangagwa for facilitating his treatment in China and Zimbabweans for their prayers.

Police In No Nonsense Mood, Nab Hundreds Of Touts At Harare Terminuses

State Media|More than 350 touts have been arrested for harassing passengers at Harare’s bus terminuses since Christmas Eve.

In an interview yesterday, police national spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said the operation seeks to flush out touts.

“As far as we are concerned, the police are enforcing law and order during this festive season,” he said.

“We have had complaints that touts were harassing passengers and we had to enforce the law. So far, we have arrested more than 350 touts from the 24th of December, but the number is increasing.

“We have been having this operation against touts for some time now and the sad thing is we have had a tout who fell to death while he was hanging from the back of a commuter omnibus. Many passengers are complaining why we are conducting such operations, but we are trying to maintain sanity in the city,” Asst Comm Nyathi said.

He said the operation was not targeting kombi operators, but those operating illegally.

“It is not a battle against commuter omnibus or bus operators, but we want to make sure that the passengers are safe during the festive season.

“We would like people to embark on their journeys on designated areas to avoid being victims of the operation,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

ZACC Vows To Combat Corruption

THE anti-corruption drive has moved a gear up towards prosecution of individuals fingered in graft, with fresh revelations that the Attorney General’s Office is now being ropped in to team up with the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) in fast-tracking cases to court.

In a wide ranging interview, Zacc chairperson Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo said the anti-graft body was not happy with the slow action by the NPA in pushing prosecutions.

She said of the over 600 dockets they had opened, at least 100 have been fully investigated, with 74 involving high profile figures.

“Zacc investigates and then sends the papers to the NPA, but the Attorney-General is being brought on board to help fight corruption. We are bringing on board as many people as possible,” she said.

“There are high profile cases which include ministers, MPs, judges, CEOs (chief executive officers) and MDs (managing directors); we are targeting everyone involved in corruption and we will investigate everyone. We urge all those with evidence which may lead to convictions to come forward.

“There should be convictions in court, but we need prosecution (NPA) to up their game. Once we start seeing convictions in court, it gives public confidence that we are not just doing a catch and release game.”

The Zacc boss said to boost the anti-corruption fight, the commission would soon employ 60 investigators drawn from various fields such as forensic auditing, financial intelligence, accountants and engineers.

Chiyangwa Receives Famous CR7 Jersey

JUVENTUS star Cristiano Ronaldo charmed Cosafa president Philip Chiyangwa when he sent him his trademark Number 7 jersey with the world renowned player’s signature on the back.

Uefa president Aleksender Ceferin, who is also Fifa vice-president handed the jersey to Chiyangwa at the Victoria Falls International Airport soon after his arrival on Friday.

The Uefa boss said Ronaldo personally gave him the jersey to hand over to Chiyangwa.
Besides the signature which is right on the Number 7, the jersey is written “to Phillip.”

“I was given this for you. He gave me just before we left for airport as we set off to come here,” said Ceferin.

The Portugal forward and former Real Madrid, who turns 35 in February next year, appended his signature on the back on the jersey on the Number 7.

The former world player of the year is famous for his game and has won a record five Ballon d’Or awards and holds a record highest goals in the Uefa champions league.
Chiyangwa said he was charmed by the gesture.

“Remember I have been attending awards ceremonies so he personally sent this jersey with his signature,” said Chiyangwa.

He said there is much value to the jersey as Ronaldo is his best player.

The Uefa boss and wife Barbara are on a private holiday in Victoria Falls and was expected to discuss about local football last night with Chiyangwa.

He said his discussion with Chiyangwa will be around among other things, bringing down to Zimbabwe world footballers for sport tourism and exchange programmes for development of football.— State media

Bishop Mutendi Criticized For Calling MDC A House Of Lost Sheep

By Jeffryson Murisi David Chitando

Bishop Mutendi’s utterances in Bulawayo in which he described the MDC as a house of lost sheep are blasphemous.

Musona Vanishes Into Thin Air

Walter Musona vanishes into thin air

The local football fratenity has been blinkered towards Warriors skipper Knowledge Musona’s woes at Belgian top flight side Anderlecht so much such that very few have noticed that his brother Walter is also struggling for game time at Polokwane City.

The last time the 24-year-old striker was in the spotlight was in May this year,  when he was flagged offside by the law after his BMW was used in a robbery, a scandal which was later cleared as it emerged that it was actually his friend, not Musona, who was involved in the crime.

Polokwane City’s struggles in the ABSA Premiership this season have also coincided with Musona struggling for game time at Rise and Shine.

The last time he featured for the Limpopo-based outfit was on the 26th of October, in the 1-2 loss to Golden Arrows.

He has not featured for Rise and Shine in the last 6 games, an alarming situation considering that at some point, the former FC Platinum man was highly rated in the South African top division.

“Chamisa Won The 2018 Election”: Zhuwao

By Own Correspondent| Patrick Zhuwao, a former Zimbabwean cabinet minister and nephew to the late former President, Robert Mugabe, said MDC leader Nelson Chamisa won the 2018 presidential election but was denied victory by electoral officials.

Zhuwawo made the remarks from South Africa where he is in self-imposed exile while announcing that he had applied to join the Julius Malema-led Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF).

He said:

I agree with CIC (Commander-in-Chief Julius) Malema’s view that Mnangagwa can be defeated. Chamisa won the 2018 presidential election which was stolen as proven in Professor Jonathan Moyo’s Excelgate book.

Whilst I am not a member of MDC, I however respect the democratic expression of Zimbabweans who electorally expressed their wish for Chamisa to be president of Zimbabwe.

Excelgate is a book which purports to reveal how Zimbabwe’s security services, working in cahoots with electoral officials and ruling party officials manipulated the 2018 elections results using an excel spreadsheet.

De Jongh Rubbishes FC Platinum Move

Pieter De Jongh

State Media|DUTCHMAN Hendrikus Pieter De Jongh has rubbished any news linking him with a move to FC Platinum, but confirmed that he will not be returning to Highlanders next season.

Having charmed the Bosso faithfuls, during his three-month stay at the Bulawayo Giants, De Jongh has said that he is in no hurry to ink any new deals, despite a couple of offers having reached his table.

“I am not returning to Bosso next season, and will be going either for new challenges or take a six month break from football.

“When I came here; my task was to help Highlanders survive relegation, now that we survived relegation I am now looking forward to new challenges,” said the Dutchman.

“No club in Zimbabwe has approached me as yet, but I can confirm that clubs from five different countries in Africa and one national team have made contact with my management team.

“I am yet to decide on which team I will be joining though.

“To say that I am going to FC Platinum is fake news; I have never spoken with them (FC Platinum) and neither have my management team,” said De Jongh.

He has, however, heaped praise on the reigning Castle Lager Premiership champions on numerous occasions, something that may account for the rumours between the two parties.

“Zimbabwe has great football quality; I have been following the teams in the local Premiership, and those that have participated in the Champions League,” said the 49-year-old gaffer.

“FC Platinum have the resources and state-of-the-art facilities that are required in modern football,” he said when he came to join Highlanders in September.

As he departs for presumably greener pastures, De Jongh has described his time at Highlanders as one of  his greatest experiences in his coaching career.

His record at Highlanders currently stands at 5-6-1; having won five matches, drew six times and lost just one match out of the 12 Premier League games he was in charge of.

That feat saw him finish sixth on the log table.

His greatest achievements at Highlanders, however, remains the Chibuku Super Cup win, that saw Highlanders win their first piece of major silverware in four years.

“Winning the Super Cup and helping the team survive relegation to end up in the top eight was a big achievement for me,” said De Jongh.

“I had a great time at Highlanders; the team was just fantastic, the supporters were awesome and I really enjoyed my stay here. I wish them all the success in the future,” said De Jongh.

Nakamba Watches From The Bench As Hopeless Villa Gets A Hiding At Norwich

Ten-men Watford has won 3-0 against Aston Villa in an EPL match played on Saturday. Watford got goals from Troy Deeney 42′, 67′ (P) and Ismaïla Sarr 71′.

Aston Villa were without defensive midfielder Marvelous Nkamba who watched the match from the bench as Smith chose Douglas Luiz over him.

While Watford have extended their unbeaten run to three matches, the Blue and Claret army is now in the relegation zone with 18 points after 20 matches.

Dean Smith’s side has won only one, against Norwich, of its last six matches in the top flight.

The Villans committed many errors within and nearer to the box which the hosts capitalised.

Man Arrested For Wearing A Cap In Front Of King Mswati’s Picture

Swazi Herald|Mbongwa Dlamini, the President of the Swaziland National Association of Teachers(SNAT) has been detained by the police at Sandlane Boarder Post for wearing a cap in front of King Mswati’s picture.

It is regarded as an offence in terms of eSwatini Customary Law to wear a cap in front of King Mswati’s picture and citizens are expected to remove their hats to demonstrate respect for the absolute Monarch. Dlamini was allegedly harassed and subsequently deprived his right to freely move from one place to another on Thursday afternoon during the Boxing Day. When reached for comments by this Swaziland News, the SNAT President confirmed the matter saying the police refused to authorize his entry from South Africa, they ordered that he must first remove his cap before his passport was stamped.

“When I asked why should I remove it, they showed me the picture of the King on the wall saying that was the reason I should remove my cap. They did the same thing in the morning on my way to South Africa and harassed me and now they are detaining me. As we speak, they are refusing depriving me to have my passport stamped because of that” he said.

In one of the recorded conversations between the police officer and the SNAT President, the officer whose identity is known to this publication said he won’t stamp the passport until Dlamini removed the cap.

“I won’t stamp for you while wearing that cap, just remove it and your problem will be solved” said the officer.

Superintendent Phindile Valakati, the Eswatini Police Spokesperson could not be reached for comments on the matter at the time of compiling this report.

But Sikelela Dlamini, the SNAT Secretary General said it was clear that their President was being victimized and deprived his right to freedom of movement.

“They are depriving him his right to freedom of movement by refusing to stamp his passport. They are treating him differently from other citizens for reasons best known to them” said the Secretary General.

Zambian Man Divorces Wife Because She Didn’t Tell Him That Mealie Meal In The House Had Run Out

Zambian Man Seeks Divorce Because Wife Did Not Inform Him That A Bag Of Mealie-Meal Had Finsihed | Zambian Politics News

Own Correspondent|A wife in Zambia who slept on her duty to inform her husband that the mealie-meal in her kitchen had run out is now facing divorce charges from her husband.

The husband’s move to take his wife to court stunned Senior Local Court magistrate Kambole Nyoni who could not believe Evaristo Sitonge’s reason to divorce his wife, Loveness Jere.

Sitonge apparently stood firm on his divorce ground and told the court the reason that it was because she did not inform him that mealie-meal had finished in the house.

“Your honour, I only heard from my sister in law that mealie-meal had finished in the house. My wife did not tell me anything, this is the reason why I want to divorce her,” he said.

Sitonge charged that his wife was supposed to inform him that mealie-meal had finished in the house, rather than keeping quiet.

He said as a man of the house, he has never failed to buy mealie-meal and always does that before it finishes.

Apparently, the Mealie Meal was used up a week before the husband came to know of it but the family continued to have sadza provided. Sitonge demanded to know where his wife got the mealie-meal she was using to cook for the week.

“Mwechilye (Your honour), I want my wife to tell me where she got the mealiemeal we have been eating. In my life, I have never bought a ‘pamela’ (nickname for 5kg bag of Mealie Meal) before, I always buy large quantities,” he said.

Sitonge has since kicked out his wife and wants the court to end their eight-year marriage.

Jere acknowledged she did not inform her husband that mealie-meal had finished in the house.

She said the reason she did not do so is because he knew he had not yet been paid. “I was waiting for him to get paid, so this is the reason why I did not inform him about mealie-meal finishing in the house,” she said.

Jere said since she is a trader, she bought a “pamela” at the market as she waited for her husband to get paid. She also accused her husband of sexually starving her and telling her that he has fallen out of love.

Jere said her husband also tells her that the woman he loved and wanted to marry is married elsewhere. The court adjourned the matter to December 30, 2019.

Death at concert

Own Correspondent|A woman in her mid 20s died a horrific death at a music concert organised ZEC Commissioner Qhubani Moyo owned Skyz Metro FM at Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo on Saturday night.

The woman died after trying to get free entry into the music concert by jumping over a stadium precast concrete wall fortified with razor wire. In the process she got herself tangled in the razor wire and got shocked by her jacket.

The concert marketed as ‘Bulawayo Shutdown’ featured a host of artists including Winky D, Mafikizolo and Nasty C. The concert was apparently out of reach for most people as the cheapest ticket was R250 with VIPs paying up to R900.

The woman was discovered unconscious shortly before 3AM on Sunday by a man who was reliving himself and immediately raised alarm. Police officers at the venue attended to the scene. ZEC Commissioner Qhubani Moyo was actually one of the people, together with the police, who lowered the body down from where it was hanging.

On the other side of the wall, police found an extremely drunk a man nearly unconscious, who they handcuffed and took away.

A police search of the woman’s body yielded a Samsung phone, $15 bond notes and a sachet with a powdered brown substance that looked suspiciously like an illicit drug.

Police will try to establish if the unidentified man helped the woman to use an undesignated entry point which has a tree close to the wall on the outside, and why he also suddenly fell unconscious.

“You Are Looking Down Upon The Masses”: Prof Moyo Tells Mnangagwa

By A Correspondent- Former politburo member Professor Jonathan Moyo has blasted President Emmerson Mnangagwa who last Monday visited and bought eats from vendors.

Moyo accused Mnangagwa of looking down on the masses through his gesture when he interacted with the vendors.

The development follows Mnangagwa’s visit in Kwekwe where he got off from his motorcade and headed straight towards the marketplace and bought groundnuts, snot apples (matohwe) and maize cobs.

Commuters, kombi crews and vendors jostled to catch a glimpse of Mnangagwa where he also took time to listen to concerns raised by vendors.

He was accompanied by State Security Minister Owen Ncube.

Patricia Moyo a vendor, who sold groundnuts to President Mnangagwa, said he paid using local currency and asked her about the challenges she was facing.

“We heard his motorcade and suddenly he appeared. I was elated when he headed straight to my market where he asked how much I was charging. After I told him, he took money out his pocket and paid. I even gave him change,” she said.

She was happy to have told her problems to the highest office in the land.

“I am hoping that he is going to address the challenges that we face as vendors. I, for one, told him the problems we are facing and he promised to look into them,” said an elated Moyo.

Professor Moyo however slammed President Mnangagwa for “looking down on the masses.”

“Kubata musana while talking to people, especially pamusika, is rude behavior which is tantamount to looking down on the masses!” Moyo tweeted.

Net Closes In On Over 600 Corrupt Top Chefs

By A Correspondent- The anti-corruption drive has moved a gear up towards prosecution of individuals fingered in graft, with fresh revelations the Attorney-General’s Office is now being ropped in to team up with the National Prosecution Authority (NPA) in fast-tracking cases to court.

According to the state media, the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) is currently working on over 600 dockets for prosecution of people accused of corruption including judges, ministers, Members of Parliament and company executives.

In a wide-ranging interview, Zacc chairperson Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo said the anti-graft body was not happy with the slow pace by the NPA in pushing prosecutions.

She said of the over 600 dockets they had opened, at least 100 have been fully investigated, with 74 involving high-profile figures.

“Zacc investigates and then sends the papers to the NPA, but the Attorney-General is being brought on board to help fight corruption. We are bringing on board as many people as possible,” she said.

“There are high-profile cases which include ministers, MPs, judges, CEOs (chief executive officers) and MDs (managing directors); we are targeting everyone involved in corruption and we will investigate everyone.

Treasury had already approved the recruitment drive.

Justice Matanda-Moyo said corruption was a sophisticated phenomenon requiring highly trained investigators.

She said police officers who were seconded to the anti-graft body had already received further training to strengthen investigating skills.

Justice Matanda-Moyo said as part of the corruption fight, several top-of-the-range vehicles, luxury homes and bank accounts had been forfeited to the State as owners were failing to account for their wealth.

One of the cases of seized properties involved that of former Tourism Minister Dr Walter Mzembi, who lost a house in Borrowdale after he skipped the border to evade arrest on corruption charges.

The Zacc chair urged the NPA to expedite the cases of seized cars and houses to ensure the State and the public benefited from the auction of ill-gotten wealth.

Justice Matanda-Moyo said: “The corrupt will lose properties; cars, houses will be taken. In 2020, we want to see all the law arms fight corruption.”

Another area of concern, Justice Matanda-Moyo noted, was tax evasion and she appealed to the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) to up its game.

To plug financial leakages, the Zacc chair said, there was need to deal with cartels fuelling the smuggling of goods, gold and diamonds, thereby bleeding the economy.

“Immigration authorities should also screen criminals entering the country who are responsible for illegally exporting minerals.

“People entering Zimbabwe must be scrutinised because we can’t import corruption,” said Justice Matanda-Moyo.

Furthermore, there was need to strengthen the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) so that it properly monitors the activities of banks.

Said Justice Matanda Moyo of members of the judiciary: “As for the judges, there should be proper salaries so that they don’t accept bribes. We don’t want corrupt people acquitted because those in the judiciary have been bribed.

“However, we are pleased that matters will be dealt with swiftly because we have anti-corruption courts at the magistrates’ and High Courts.”

Justice Matanda-Moyo also noted that a National Anti-Corruption Strategy (NACS) was being finalised and would be complete this week.

Views contained in the NACS were drawn from the public, civil society, academia, Government and business.

President Mnangagwa earlier this year appointed a new commission led by Justice Matanda-Moyo and other commissioners, namely Gabriel Chaibva, Jessie Fungai Majome, John Makamure, Thandiwe Thando Mlobane, Kuziva Phineas Murapa, Frank Muchengwa, Retired Major Michael Dennis Santu andMabel Ndakaripa Hungwe

.Since coming into office, Zacc has shown some teeth. High-profile people swooped in its path include former Vice President Phelekezela Mphoko on allegations of criminal abuse of office and former Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Prisca Mupfumira.

Zacc also arrested former Environment, Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister Prisca Mupfumira on corruption allegations involving US$95 million.

Another arrest that confirmed Zacc’s seriousness in the fight against corruption was that of Marry Mubaiwa, the estranged wife of Vice President Constantino Chiwenga, for externalising US$1 033 000.

She was also charged with money laundering involving US$990 000 and fraud.

Joram Gumbo, the Minister of State for Presidential Affairs (Monitoring and Implementation of Government Programmes), was also arrested for criminal abuse of office last month.

Former principal director of State Residences in the Office of the President and Cabinet Douglas Tapfuma was hauled before the courts on criminal abuse of office charges after he allegedly facilitated the importation of several vehicles duty-free.

ZEC Begins Consultations On Constituency Boundaries

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has begun preparatory consultations to draw boundaries that will be used for the next harmonised elections.

While the delimitation exercise is usually conducted after the national population census — of which the next one is expected in 2022, a year before the elections — Government has already decided to amend the Constitution to delink the two key exercises.

It would, however, mean that constituency boundaries would be mapped using registered voters.

The delimitation exercise involves coming up with a minimum threshold of registered voters to make the country’s 210 National Assembly constituencies.

ZEC’s chief elections officer Mr Utoile Silaigwana recently told The Sunday Mail that the elections management body was engaging key stakeholders to help shape the process.

“You are aware that delimitation is a constitutional item in terms of Section 161 (1), which states that delimitation shall be done after every 10 years as soon as possible after a census exercise,” he said.

“So, if you look at the next census exercise, which is in 2022, and the next election is in 2023, already that shows a coincidence in the two major exercises.

“But the amendment of the Constitution is not within the purview of ZEC; it is with the Legislature.

“But ZEC has not sat back because of that; as part of preparations, we have already started discussions and consultations with some institutions and stakeholders, particularly ZimStat, the Ministry of Local Government (and Public Works) and the Registrar-General.”-State media

Mnangagwa Dishes Out 15tonnes Of Rice From China

By A Correspondent- President Mnangagwa has distributed 15 tonnes of rice donated by the People’s Republic of China to rural communities, with all rural constituencies benefiting.

The donation supplements the grain that is distributed to rural communities on a monthly basis to fight starvation.

In a statement recently, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Professor Paul Mavima said the donation was part of Government’s obligation to provide social protection to vulnerable and disadvantaged communities in Zimbabwe.

“The Government of Zimbabwe, through the Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, has an obligation to provide social protection services to vulnerable and disadvantaged groups in Zimbabwe through social transfer programmes. This includes, among other interventions, the provision of food relief to vulnerable households during times of drought and emergencies,” he said.

Prof Mavima said there were a number of social protection programmes and strategies being implemented by Government to ensure that all vulnerable groups in society were reached and supported.

“The Ministry of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare guarantees that the donated rice will be distributed during the festive season. In addition, distribution of grain will also continue to ensure that no one starves in Zimbabwe during the festive season and beyond,” he said.

Roller Meal Supplies To Improve

By A Correspondent- More subsidised roller meal will be in the shops once all millers start receiving the special maize allocations from the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) from Monday after a fruitful meeting between the Government and millers recently.

Shortages have been severe since only eight of the 61 millers had been receiving the special maize allocations for milling into roller meal but from next week all millers will be receiving the required special allocations from the Grain Marketing Board.

Millers met representatives from the Ministries of Industry and Commerce, Finance and Economic Development, the GMB and the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra).

The meeting came after some millers expressed concern that they were excluded from the subsidised roller meal programme as they had not been registered.

After the meeting, both parties confirmed they had a fruitful discussion and expected things to start improving next week with the subsidised roller meal being made available in shops.

Secretary for Industry and Commerce Dr Mavis Sibanda said Government was working with millers to eliminate all problems preventing the availability of subsidised roller meal on the market.

“We are working together with millers. We are in the process of ensuring all millers are functional,” said Dr Sibanda. We had a cordial meeting with the millers. It was an important meeting to understand each other. Millers wanted to understand the subsidy process and we updated each other on the processes.

“As the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, we want all millers to survive.”

On the registration concerns, Dr Sibanda said all millers were registered with the GMB.

Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) national chairman, Mr Tafadzwa Musarara, said there had been some changes to the subsidy programme, resulting in some millers experiencing challenges.

He said only eight millers had so far been registered for the subsidised roller meal programme.

ZELA Warns Gvnt On Diamonds

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe has been told to clean its diamonds or totally lose its diamond market share to synthetic diamonds if environmental and human rights issues are not addressed.

This was said by Zimbabwe Environmental Lawyers Association (ZELA) official Shamiso Mtisi who said;

Due to the emergency of synthetic diamonds, natural diamonds are slowly losing market share as they are associated with wars, child labour, environmental harm, and human rights violations.

This means countries like Zimbabwe may lose out if we don’t clean up our diamonds and adopt responsible sourcing measures like carrying out human rights related impact assessment and environmental reservation principles which resonate with the consumer of this day.

America banned Zimbabwe diamonds on American markets this year due to alleged unethical practices at diamond mine.

Said Mr Chitiyo:

Industry is certainly growing just in Houghton Park, Harare, alone we have had three industries coming up and that’s a posi- tive direction. Yes, we have some stressed industries; we have those industries which are in need of financing in order to be resuscitated in order for them to grow.

Some are just above floating, but government has set aside some funds to make sure that these in- dustries don’t die and that they continue to grow.

Mr Chitiyo’s remarks were despite the fact that CZI is saying capacity utilisation has shrunk to below 40% in 2019 and some businesses recorded the lowest sales in 2019 since 6 years ago.

Cristiano Ronaldo Sends Chiyangwa Trademark Number 7 Jersey

Govt Employs 5000 New Teachers

Cain Mathema

State Media|THE Civil Service Commission has given the nod to the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to employ 5 000 teachers to ease pressure in the country’s schools while further proposing that teachers be proficient in local languages spoken in the district for infant modules.

The proposal to employ teachers proficient in local languages especially those that were previously marginalised is expected to put to rest concerns by communities especially in Matabeleland that their children were taught by people who are not well versed with the learner’s language.

Primary and Secondary Education Minister Cde Cain Mathema confirmed the development saying they were elated as it meant an improvement in service delivery in the country’s education sector and rescue the zero percent pass rate recorded in some schools.

He, however, lamented the lack of adequate resources for learning and teaching for the competency-based curriculum which was introduced a few years ago.

The minister said there was a need for action to be taken to fill in the gaps. Registration for the teachers started on 25 November.

“We were recently granted authority to hire 5 000 teachers for the 2020 financial year. We are grateful that President Emmerson Mnangagwa allowed us to employ the teachers during such economic times. “We have, as one ministry created 5 000 jobs which is impressive. We have a high unemployment rate and we are making efforts to reduce that by employing more of our professionals who were out of the system due to budgetary constraints. These 5 000 teachers will surely aid the sector in a huge way through an improved service delivery,” he said.

The education sector now has a deficit of 10 000 teachers from the previous 15 000.

Cde Mathema, however, said teaching and learning material for the competency-based curriculum was in short supply with books selling at prices like $1 000 each.

“Our current budget is grossly inadequate to meet the demand for teaching and learning materials for most of our schools especially in rural day schools and satellite schools,” he said.

Panic was growing from worried parents who felt their children would miss out on learning if there were no books availed for them.

“We are working to afford all children and schools in the country the necessary materials for learning as well as teaching material. They may be in short supply at the moment but we promise to deliver as soon as we can,” said Cde Mathema.

Some pupils who are crossing over in to Grade Six said they were told that there were no books under the new curriculum and that they would use books from the old curriculum.

Cde Mathema made a passionate call for the private sector and parents to chip in and assist in providing support.

“The private sector and the parents are called upon to assist in supplying textbooks so that learners have access to reading material. We need to produce enough books so that students can continue with their education undisturbed,” he added.

The minister also said it was not an overnight job to secure all the needed requirements for the new curriculum saying there was a need for a lot of financial investment and help from stakeholders.

He added that access to education and the necessary learning materials were a Constitutional right that all learners from both rural and urban schools deserved.

Cde Mathema said teaching and learning space in schools was inadequate as some schools were still using tobacco barns and grass-thatched classrooms.

He also spoke of the need for more resources to be availed for the construction of teacher’s cottages and further training of teachers in the competence-based curriculum.

The developments in the education sector are, according to a statement released on Friday, going to reduce the number of unqualified teachers as well as multi-grade teaching especially in resettlement areas.

Stakeholders have expressed disappointment over poor infrastructure in some schools and learner performance, particularly e-learning facilities which are affecting the new curriculum.

“E-learning facilities, are they available in those schools that we have people failing dismally? The education, infrastructure is it available or people are just asked to explain the teaching concept and curriculum in theory only? We want to know, it should be disaggregated to see whether there is any relationship between the poor infrastructure and the poor pass rate,” asked Umzingwane Member of Parliament Retired Brigadier-General Levi Mayihlome.

Charity Workers Save Two Baby Elephants From Sure Death

Operation Save Dumbo: Charity workers rescue two baby elephants from certain death in Zimbabwe… and just look at them now!

Lost, alone and having suffered life-threatening injuries in the drought-ravaged savannah, the future seemed bleak for these two orphaned baby elephants.

Kadiki had been attacked by a lion when only a day old, suffering deep claw wounds to her trunk and terrible damage to her tail. She was so young, she had not yet been fed by her mother.

In a separate incident in the searing heat of Zimbabwe, one-month-old Bumi had somehow got stuck among rocks and suffered severe sunburn. Usually, elephant calves are shaded by their mothers.

Luckily, rescuers found them and now their survival against the odds – chronicled in these charming images – can be trumpeted.

Kadiki and Bumi were taken in by veteran animal rescuer Roxy Danckwerts, 53, founder of the Wild Is Life charity and its Zimbabwe Elephant Nursery (ZEN), the country’s only baby elephant sanctuary.

Since the calves were airlifted to the International Fund for Animal Welfare-supported nursery near Harare, she and her team have stayed by their side.

Kadiki, whose name means ‘the little one’ in the local Shona language, has had surgery to amputate part of her tail and treatment to her trunk. Now around ten days old, she is well enough to walk about again despite being on a drip.

As for Bumi, staff at the nursery say he is now ‘almost unrecognisable’ from his arrival, has developed a mischievous personality and loves playing with tyres.

It is not known what happened to their mothers. As well as drought, calves can end up alone or injured due to poaching, falling into ditches, getting separated from herds or predator attacks, the IFAW says.

Ms Danckwerts, who has rescued more than 20 elephants in the past five years, said: ‘Elephants are highly intelligent, with physical and emotional needs unparalleled in other mammals.

‘Big picture conservation is terribly important. Working with IFAW we are making this happen and I’m happy we can together create a legacy of long-term protection.’

She hopes that Moyo, the first orphan elephant she rescued, will be able to act as a mother to Kadiki and Bumi, who may be there for two years before being transported to Panda-Masuie, a forest reserve near Victoria Falls to prepare for integration into wild herds. Jimmiel Mandima of IFAW said: ‘The progress made by very traumatised and damaged elephants shows the incredible relationships between animals and humans and why it is important to give them a chance to thrive.

‘The location of the Panda-Masuie reserve opens up a safe corridor for both rescued elephants and wild herds. The presence of keepers and rangers disrupts traditional poaching routes, from Zambia down to Botswana, and further safeguards these and other animals.’

Ten Year Old Boy Ordered To Change His Snake Bearing T-shirt Before Boarding A Plane

snake boy

Own Correspondent|A boy was forced to change his T-shirt with a picture of a snake on it before boarding a plane, his family claims.

The 10-year-old Stevie Lucas had flown from Wellington, New Zealand, to Johannesburg in South Africa to visit his grandparents when the incident occurred.

At OR Tambo airport in Johannesburg, he was told that his black T-shirt, which had a large green snake printed on it, was not permissible clothing to be worn onboard on a flight.

Stevie’s parents Steve and Marga told the Daily Mail that security officers at Johannesburg airport alerted them to the rules about snake toys and clothing.

It’s believed that the snake T-shirt could cause anxiety to other passengers.

Ms Lucas reportedly told her son to turn the T-shirt inside out in order to be able to fly home.

Airport security footage shows the 10-year-old taking off his T-shirt and turning it inside out, reports the paper.

The Independent has contacted the Airports Company of South Africa for comment.
