Govt Performs U-Turn On Import Ban

The government has been forced to backtrack on the import ban, Statutory Instrument (SI) 64, in order to save face.
Govt says it is now opening consultations to amend the ban.
The SI 64 of 2016 will come under scrutiny this Monday as stakeholders converge in Harare to deliberate on its impact.
The SI 64 recently introduced by the government, which punishes ordinary Zimbabweans who survive on cross border trading, bans the importation of basic commodities at a time when industries have totally collapsed.
The state media reports that the Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers President, Mr Denford Mutashu said tomorrow’s meeting will be graced by various stakeholders which include officials from the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) and captains of industry.
While government claims that since the introduction of the statutory instrument, local firms have proved they have the capacity to meet national demand especially those in the oil industry, food processing and furniture sectors.
The policy directive is in sync with the industrialisation agenda of economies in the SADC region.
