By Paul Nyathi|Former President Robert Mugabe’s son Chatunga Bellarmine, has challenged liberation war veterans’ demands that his father be stripped of the honour of having the country’s biggest airport in Harare named after him.

In a short statement on his Facebook page, Chatunga declared that even if the demand by the war veterans is acceded to it will not erase his father’s name from the history books.

“Renaming the Airport won’t remove him from History Books,” wrote Chatunga.

Former President Mugabe led the ZANU PF revolutionary party through the liberation struggle from 1963 when he left PF ZAPU. He later became the first leader of an independent Zimbabwe in 1980 a position he held on to for 37 before he was ousted in a soft coup in November 2017.

A few weeks before his removal, the Harare International Airport was renamed the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport in his honour.

Liberation war veterans this week demanded that the airport be renamed and have Mugabe’s name removed after the veteran statesman expressed that he was going to vote for opposition MDC Alliance presidential candidate Nelson Chamisa against ZANU PF’s Emmerson Mnangagwa who he accused of unconstitutionally removing him from power.

The war veterans tagged him a sellout not worth the honour of retaining the name of the airport.
