
By Own Correspondent| The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) Salary Caravan commenced Sunday amid revelations that the teachers completed the first stretch of their journey and camped in Odzi, Manicaland overnight.
ARTUZ President Obert Masaraure told ZimEye that the teachers camped in Odzi readying to continue with their journey in the morning (Monday).
He however revealed that while over a hundred teachers had started the march, a handful had pulled out on day one of the protest.
“The march started well with over 100 participants.
Some of our cadres have however pulled out of the march and there are about 95 of us left. This is walking and some of the teachers could not handle it so they gave up.
We however put up in Odzi where we rested for the night and we will continue with the march this morning until we get to Harare on 19 December.”
The ARTUZ Salary Caravan is a protest march by teachers aimed at pushing government to pay teacher’s salaries in forex. The teachers are also demanding their bonuses in full among other grievances.
The teachers are walking from Mutare to Harare, which is 266 kilometres and expectations are that they will reach Harare on 19 December 2018.
The teachers have revealed that they will camp at the fnance ministry until their grievances are heard.
