LILONGWE-(MaraviPost)-In a desperate move following Malawi Defence Force (MDF) leadership siding with citizens over the country’s leader President Peter Mutharika has appointed Lieutenant General Vincent Nundwe as the new Malawi Army Commander.
Nundwe replaced the former army leader, General Griffin Supuni Phiri who has been appointed National Security Advisor.
The appointments are with immediate effect according to Office of President and Cabinet (OPC).
The development comes following social media reports on Thursday that former MDF general Supuni Phiri was on house arrest for refusing to resign.
The reports further alleged that there was a heavy presence of armed soldiers at Supuni Phiri where they were chanting calling on Supuni Phiri to resign with immediate effect.
The spokesperson for MDF Chimphwanya could not confirm or deny the allegations promising to issue a statement.
