By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police have served the opposition MDC with a prohibition order which bans the party’s Mutare demonstration that was slated for Thursday.

The ban becomes the fifth after the State also blocked the Harare, Bulawayo, Gweru and Masvingo demonstrations.

Police argue that they have concrete evidence which suggests that the demonstrations would degenerate into chaos. Chief Superintendent Florence Marume brought into remembrance some violent demonstrations which were allegedly caused by the MDC in Mutare before.

They say that although demonstrating is everyone’s constitutional right, public safety, which these demonstrations are threatening, overrides the right.

Commentators have however claimed that the state’s evidence which is the basis of banning the protest was planted by the State so as to find an excuse to ban the demonstrations.

The bans have been widely and wildly condemned by human rights defenders, Diplomatic Missions in Zimbabwe and opposition political parties in Zimbabwe.

They describe them as an attack on democracy.

The demonstrations aimed at challenging government over the deteriorating state of affairs in the country.
