National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) president Professor Lovemore Madhuku has ruled out the formation of a unity government, saying the government of the day will see out its full term in office and no one should assume power through the backdoor.

Madhuku said this while speaking to Star FM after he and other POLAD leaders met with former South African President Thabo Mbeki who is in the country.

Social media was full of speculation that Mbeki had come to encourage a government of national unity between Zanu-PF and the opposition as happened in 2009, but Madhuku has dismissed the speculations.

“There’s no such a thing as a unity government as some are suggesting. We will never have someone coming into power through the back door.

“Former South African President Thabo Mbeki was just in the country to encourage dialogue with a view to solving the problems we are having.

“It is not even Constitutional anymore to have a GNU as happened in 2009 when we were using the old constitution.

In any case, we have an elected government in office, so why should anyone wriggle their way into power via the backdoor?” Madhuku thundered.

On Monday, Mbeki met with President Emmerson Mnagangwa at the State House, before meeting with MDC leader Nelson Chamisa later that day at a Harare hotel.

Tuesday saw Mbeki meeting with leaders of the ‘useless’ Political Actors Dialogue platform who include MDC-T President Thokozani Khupe, MDC-T Vice-President Obert Gutu, NCA leader Professor Madhuku, amongst others who included NPF spokesperson Jealousy Mawarire and Lucia Matibenga.

Since its launch, Polad has done absolutely nothing to solve Zimbabwe’s economic problems.

The former South African President also met with leaders from the church and civic society.
