By A Correspondent- Parents of junior rugby national team players were asked to sponsor their children’s Namibian tour.
The matter came to light after a Twimbo tweeted a letter that notified the parents of the costs and the breakdown of the tour cost.
Mke Madoda tweeted:
If we ever needed any further evidence of Zimbabwe Rugby’s staggering incompetence, this is it. To ask parents of prospective junior national team players to part with US$1061 is immoral. ZRU is virtually selling national team spots. What happens to the boys who can’t afford?
The letter attached to Mike’s tweet reads in part:
Dear Parent
Your son has been selected to be part of the Zimbabwe Rugby U18 Sevens National Team touring Namibia. The team will play South Africa, German, Namibia Botswana and Zambia. We will depart on 27 February and return 1 March
Tour costs
Flight (SA Airways Hre-JNB-WDH return) US 671
Team contribution, Kit, coach’s flights, additional accommodation US 390
Total US 1061
