The World Health Organisation has said for a country to lift lockdown measures it must meet certain conditions.

WHO director-general Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, speaking on the matter of lifting lockdowns said:

…Some countries are considering when they can lift these restrictions. Others are considering when to introduce them.

On both cases, these decisions must be based on protecting human health and be guided by what we know about the virus and how it behaves. We are all learning all the time and adjusting our strategy based on the latest available evidence.

WHO reportedly recommended that for a country to lift lockdown measures it must:

  1. Lift the lockdown only if health systems have capabilities to test, isolate, treat and trace every contact.
  2. Make sure the transmission of the virus is controlled and ensure that outbreak risks are minimal in specialised settings such as nursing homes and health institutions.
  3. Avail preventive measures, especially in places where people converge such as workplaces and schools.
  4. Ensure that imported risks are managed while communities are educated, engaged and empowered to adjust to the new norm.
