STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF SOUL JAH LOVE

It’s with a heavy heart that we have come to learn of the passing of Soul Musaka, popularly known as Soul Jah Love.

Our deepest condolences to the Musaka family and the Zimdancehall fraternity. If there is one artist who delivered music that connects, it was Soul Jah Love. From Ndini Uya to Kana Ndafa, you can feel raw emotion in his music.

Among other things, Soul Jah Love sang about real life issues such as poverty. His song “Kuponda Nhamo” is both a cry for better living conditions and a call to action for suffering masses. Zimbabwe, please, mese wunganai, mese kokanai, mugosvika pano, toda kumboponda nhamo.

One of his last tracks, dubbed Taneta neNhamo, bemoans the deplorable situation in Zimbabwe. In the song, Soul Jah Love chants “mabvira kare,” laying blame on an unidentified entity who we can only assume is ZANU-PF, the party responsible for the ongoing economic malaise.

When houses of many ordinary citizens, including his, were destroyed a few years back, Soul Jah Love released a track titled “Pazai.” To those who recently started destroying houses again tinoti pazai, pazai, pazai, but one of these days, the people will rise.

As young people, we mourn the passing of a fellow youth, compatriot and brother. His passing has robbed us of a talented artist and left the Zimdancehall fraternity poorer.
