By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe may experience unprecedented new coronavirus infections and high mortality rates from COVID-19 in the near future, a health official has warned.

Mpilo Central Hospital acting chief executive officer Professor Solwayo Ngwenya issued the chilling warning this Friday, without elaborating. 

He tweeted:

Coronavirus: to all my close relatives, few friends, and close ardent followers I don’t how to reach you without causing alarm to the faint-hearted, but things look bleak ahead.

May you all remain focused on the virus wherever you are. The signals show terrible danger ahead.

The country is currently registering declining infections, deaths and test positivity rates, which has resulted in the reopening of schools and resumption of sporting activities across the country.

In its COVID-19 situation report for 02 September 2021, the Ministry of Health and Child Care (MoHCC) reported 158 new cases, 11 deaths and 670 recoveries.

Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, Zimbabwe has recorded 125 118 cumulative cases, 114 197 recoveries, and 4 449 total deaths.

Professor Ngwenya’s warning comes after the government resolved to reopen schools for all learners on Monday, 6 September 2021.

Teachers’ unions have, however, warned that schools may turn into coronavirus super spreaders, with slightly more than 5 per cent of the educators having been vaccinated against the virus.
