Zimbabwe delivered a commanding performance on the opening day of the Boxing Day Test against Afghanistan, finishing at 363 for 4 at Queens Sports Club on Thursday.

Veteran batsman Sean Williams notched his fifth Test century, leading the charge for the hosts. Playing at his home ground, Williams showcased his full range of shots on a wicket that offered some turn. He utilized excellent footwork to dominate Afghanistan’s bowlers throughout the day.

Williams formed a crucial 143-run partnership for the sixth wicket with captain Craig Ervine, who was unbeaten on 56 at stumps.

Earlier in the day, debutant Ben Curran provided a strong foundation for Zimbabwe with a quick-fire 64 off 71 balls. However, his opening partner, Joylord Gumbie, was dismissed early for 9. Takudzwanashe Kaitano made a solid start but was caught out for 45, while also providing vital support to Williams. Dion Myers added a brief but valuable cameo as well.

Zimbabwe made three debutants for the match – opening batsman Ben Curran, and bowlers Newman Nyamhuri and Trevor Gwandu – while veterans Victor Nyauchi and Richard Ngarava were left out.

With a strong foundation laid, Zimbabwe will look to build a significant total on day two before inviting Afghanistan to bat.
