Controversial War Veterans leader, Douglas Mahiya, has called for an extension of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term of office beyond 2030.

Mahiya made the remarks at the weekend while addressing war veterans, ex-political prisoners, detainees, and restrictees in Makoni West during the launch of the Presidential War Veterans Fund and War Veterans Borehole Scheme.

Mnangagwa’s second and final term of office is set to end in 2028, but Zanu PF hardliners, including Mahiya, are pushing for the possibility of a third term for the President.

The call has stirred debate within the political landscape, with some seeing it as an attempt to extend the current administration’s grip on power.

Speaking at the event, Mahiya praised Mnangagwa for his contributions to war veterans, noting the sacrifices they made for the country. “You will never ever find a leader like President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Remember war veterans suffered for more than 40 years in this country, but look at what the President has done for us. This is what we call a miracle… He is a saint this man,” Mahiya declared, further solidifying his support for the President.

The event marked the launch of a significant initiative to support war veterans, with US$1.5 million allocated for the Fund, which is designed to provide assistance to veterans and their families. The initiative also includes the War Veterans Borehole Scheme aimed at improving access to clean water for war veterans across the country.

Mahiya’s statement reflects a broader push within some factions of Zanu PF to extend Mnangagwa’s leadership, even as his term nears its conclusion. The call for a third term has raised questions about the future political direction of Zimbabwe, with many observing the ongoing efforts to extend presidential tenure.

Whether this push will gain traction within the ruling party remains to be seen, but for now, it highlights the continuing influence of war veterans in the country’s political sphere.
