Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo| A prisoner who is a notorious robber, has vanished out of Mutimurefu Prison in classic James Bond style.
Kudakwashe Nyashanu is nowhere to be seen after he successfully crept out of the prison.
A senior Zimbabwe Prison and Correctional Services (ZPCS) boss has since landed himself into trouble after assisting the inmate to escape from jail in a suspected case of corruption, ZimEye.com can reveal. Shepherd Chinhara a senior officer based at Mutimurefu Prison, 15km from the city of Masvingo, assisted Kudakwashe Nyashanu, who was serving a 76 month jail term for robbery, to escape from prison by concealing him in his vehicle boot.
According to police reports, Chinhara drove his car and parked it near the place the inmates were carrying out their duties. He then left the car boot open and Nyashanu jumped into the vehicle. Chinhara immediately drove away from the place towards the main gate where he instructed a junior officer not to conduct a routine check of the vehicle.
However other inmates who witnessed the whole drama alerted the prison officer on duty, leading to Chinhara’s arrest but Nyashanu had already escaped.
“Chinhara who is a senior prison officer has been implicated in a jail escape scandal at Mutimurefu Prison and he has since been arrested. He is assisting the police with investigations. He used his influence to assist the inmate to escape from jail. He is expected to appear in court later this week. Chinhara is currently in custody after being nabbed over the issue,” said a police source.
Although his motive was not known at the time of writing, it is widely believed Chinhara was promised payment in cash.
