Terrence Mawawa, Masvingo | MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai has said he is the only opposition leader capable of leading a united front against President Robert Mugabe and Zanu PF.

Although Tsvangirai said consultations on the matter were in progress, he also emphasized that there is no other opposition leader capable of leading the much anticipated grand coalition.

Tsvangirai made the remarks at the party provincial offices in Masvingo Province last weekend. Political analysts say although Tsvangirai has played a pivotal role in the struggle against the Mugabe regime, he has to be prepared to embrace other political figures. “We cannot offer the top post to anyone else. Others have to wait in line. When you arrive at a place you have to familiarise with proceedings. You have to let those you found in the area lead the process while you learn,”said Tsvangirai.

The MDC leader said he was persecuted by the Mugabe regime for 17 years and he was the right candidate to lead the anticipated united front. “The people have suffered for a long time and we know what has been taking place. Therefore, we want the highest office because that is where decisions are made,”said Tsvangirai.

In Zaka District party supporters told Tsvangirai they were sceptical of Mujuru’s sincerity. The former premier however said his party would work with all progressive opposition parties.

  1. Now he is sounding very much like the same Thokozani Khuphe, whom he was castigating just the other day. Eish politicians; they are all the same – crooks, liars, cheats, power hungry – you name it. Never trust one!!

  2. Eish, what an idiot – demanding to be rewarded for self inflicted suffering? What is the difference now, between you Tswangi with those so-called war vets?

The reason Mugabe refuses to go is that he deserves the position because “he died for you”!!

Now you also want to be paid for “dying” for us?

  3. Surely Tsvangirai must lead the coalition coz he has the numbers. Of course that has to be discussed and agreed by the coalition partners but the answer to the question of who should lead is very obvious. Politics is not about degrees or impressive profiles but it’s about how the electorate receive you.

  4. He is power hungry ,we need to have a candidate which is selected by by all oposition political parties. Why is he declaring himself to lead.

  5. i fail to understand why the MDC T is so obsessed to leader a united front. Why every body knows that they have the majority of supporters and MPs until recently when they sold some to Zanu PF. Why is the leadership of who is going to lead not discussed with other leaders. By virtue of being a big party they may land the post, but the posturing about who is going to lead makes people suspicious about their leadership ability.

As such I argue the other political parties under CODE to keep their cool and in someway pull their resources together and try to bring in ZimPF and ignore the MDC T. We know that in 2008 the MDC T president failed to win a majority when MDC, Mavambo and Zapu fielded their own presidential candidate. Also in 2013, the same party failed to win because of the same opposition. What makes them think they will win alone. And if they think they could go it alone, let them go ahead, they are making a lot of noise. Experience is the best teacher but it would appear the MDC T is a slow student. The same people who voted against the MDC T will not change their voting pattern this time around. For the past ten years they have remained resolute. MDC T will pull crowds to the rallies as they always do, but they will not attract these crowds to the voting stations. MDC T needs serious remedial lessons.

The idea whose time has come in Zimbabwe is that people want a united front and it would be suicide for the MDC T to go it alone. We are already agitated as voters to be frustrated by people who won’t force us to vote for their parties, they may force us to attend their rallies, and read in newspapers about the number of people who have attended their rallies, but when we vote we vote with our conscience.
