By Swithern Chirowodza | Four male prisoners were nearly sodomised on the morning of 24th January 2019 at Khami Remand Prison.

A murder suspect, in Room 128, allegedly masturbated until [REDACTED]. After fondling himself, the obsessed captive demanded his four room mates to “one by one buyani ngilizeke (come I sex you up one by one).”

Three prisoners immediately fought the “order” while another banged the door hard to awaken the prison wardens. After a while the correctional officers and prefects called “stages” opened the cell and gave the culprit a stern warning. The four inmates warned the wardens that the sex-pest should be repelled violently if he repeated his advances.

Later, a meeting of all prisoners on remand was coincidentally called in the afternoon by the prison’s Deputy Officer-In-Charge. Several complaints were raised but the story of attempted sodomy dominated the discussion. “There is one man who demanding to have sex with us,” reported an inmate while drawing laughter from the multitude.

“Who is that?” asked the Deputy Officer-In-Charge at Khami Remand Prison. “It’s Mlungisi,” replied one of the prisoners, albeit an inmate at Room 128 on 24 January 2019. “Mlungisi simuka tikuone (stand up)!” demanded the Deputy Officer-In-Charge. Mlungisi, a murder suspect, immediately stood up amidst roaring jeers from from fellow captives. “Handiti murikuona kuti hadzina kunyatso kwana (I am sure you can all see that he is not square in the head),” said the Deputy Officer-In-Charge. “Tichamutsvakira pake pekugara (We will find a place for him to stay),” concluded the Deputy-Officer-In-Charge.

The following day another meeting to hear the grievances of prisoners was called at Khami Remand Prison. Officer-In-Charge, Mr Dumbira addressed the prisoners. He was also told about the alleged abuse of inmates by Mlungisi. “Hatidi kuzvinzwa izvozvo pano (we do not want such behaviour here),” said the Officer-In-Charge. Mlungisi, it seemed, was so embarassed that he did not defend himself when he was made to stand up before fellow captives for the second time

Some prisoners said that Mlungisi was lucky to have his case heard by Officer-In-Charge Dumbira and his deputy. They whispered, “Ogadi bebeyamubulala (the prison wardens were going to beat him to death).” When ZimEye concluded investigations at the end of January, the phrase, “one by one buyani ngilizeke (come I sex you up one by one),” was Khami Remand Prison’s most humorous statement. It drew laughter from both prisoners and correctional officers.
