By A Correspondent- The first officer to hold a “full” general’s rank in post-Independence Zimbabwe General Andrew (Sandy) Maclean has died.

His promotion was announced by current President and then Minister of State Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Maclean was promoted to full general in overall command of the country’s army and air force as the supreme commander of Zimbabwe’s defence forces by (then) Prime Minister Robert Mugabe in 1981 at the age of 49.

Maclean was the commander of the Rhodesian army and one of the men who led the fight against Mugabe’s nationalist guerrillas during the seven-year independence war which ended late in 1979.
