The residents of Chitungwiza have been grappling with water scarcity for many years,on average they have been receiving tap water once a week, but as if that was not worse enough, the taps have gone completely dry for the past three months in most areas. This unavailability of water is grossly complicating the daily lives of hundreds of thousands of residents.

The standards of hygiene and sanitation have been negatively impacted with the obvious risk to residents of water borne diseases like typhoid and cholera.
Residents are resorting to using unsafe water from shallow and unprotected wells for domestic purposes.

Critical are toilets which need water for flushing.
A survey by CHITREST revealed a gloomy picture with most residents lamenting the sorry state of affairs with most toilets blocked by unflushed raw sewer.

As CHITREST we are worried by the failure by our Municipality to proffer solutions to this serious problem being faced by residents. We are informed there are three recent reports of suspected typhoid cases in Manyame and our worst fear is that this diarrheal disease can easily spread especially in our environment of shortage of water and compromised levels of hygiene and sanitation.

Given this prevailing situation CHITREST calls upon Chitungwiza Municipality to call for an urgent indaba of all critical stakeholders to find immediate solutions to ameliarate this serious crises.
