MDC SA Province Statement On Coronavirus

Spread the love

The Movement for Democratic Change South Africa External Assembly comments the people of Zimbabwe for heeding the call to stay away from the streets so as to curb the spread of Covid-19.

Well done Zimbabweans, together we can achieve more.If pictures circulating on social media so far are a true reflection of our streets in Zimbabwe,we thank you all for your effort to curb this pandemic.

We however appeal to the Mnangagwa government to make sure people do not die of hunger while they are holed up in their homes.

It’s a fact the majority of the people in Zimbabwe survive on informal trading, therefore during the lockdown period their livelihoods suffer. The general population of Zimbabweans live from hand to mouth, making it difficult for them to feed their families during this lockdown period.

While COVID-19 poses a great threat to human life so is hunger and possible starvation to our people during the 21 days of lockdown.

The Mnangagwa government is advised to make sure the people’s food welfare is catered for during and after the lockdown.

We also urge the city and local councils together with the Zimbabwe government to provide safe water rationing to citizens, mostly in urban areas.

Most people in urban areas are now getting their drinking water from community boreholes where they walk some distances and join queues posing a danger of contracting the Covid-19.

Of concern to us is also the presence of security personnel in the streets, especially the army and police whose peace management skills are poor. The police and the army must help the people maintain peace and order in an amicable, peaceful and orderly manner. We are very much worried about this sector because we have seen people losing their lives in their hands.

People are hungry out there so they might find it very difficult for them to stay indoors and try some tricks to go out in search of food.In such instances the police and the army must not beat or shoot at them, instead they must assist them and maintain peace and order.

This Covid-19 is real and is as ruthless as the Zanu PF government.

We therefore advise the people of Zimbabwe to exercise caution during this period.

There is power in togetherness.

God bless Zimbabwe.

Change that delivers.
