There was widespread outrage Tuesday night after the Anglican Church voted against a motion for the admitting of women to the powerful bishopric post.
It will only be in 2015 when the issue is debated again after members rejected the proposal. The House of Bishops voted 44 in favour, with three against and two recorded abstentions. In the House of Clergy, 148 voted in favour, 45 against and there were no abstentions. But in the House of Laity, which represents lay members in parishes around the country, 74 voted against, compared to 132 in favour with no abstentions.
Tears and anger
The result has left many supporters for women disappointed, others angry, and some even in tears according to reports.
Girl Child Network founder, Betty Makoni blasted the move, labelling it retrogression back to the stone age.
“Every institution should make sure that we lead by example. What the bishops did has taken people back to the stone age. Its going to create a lot of animosity in the church,” she said.
“its a big sham that the Anglican church authorities have decided to snub women at a time when the UK government promotes gender balance,” Makoni added.
“If women who are majority of church goers are not top leadership what does it mean. I got married in this church and saw patriarchy in the village where this church is. What a shame. We must all condemn this. These are institutions where gender activists fight lone battles …,” Makoni further wrote in protest on the social networking website Facebook.
One day door will open
The Bishop of Liverpool, the Rt Rev James Jones, who had spoken passionately in favour of the change, said the vote would inhibit the Church’s work.
“The Church of England serves the nation by having parishes all across the country; and thousands of those parishes are led by women. Therefore, not to have women bishops does inhibit us on our mission. But we’re still hopeful that one day the door will finally open,” Rt Jones was quoted by the BBC.

O remember the european Witchhunts? women topped that list of the most burned alive of the two genders. O n now with humantrafficking women top that list too! With the most sextrafficked of the two genders. O n poverty n unemployment etc … etc the list goes on. But do u kno when women dnt top the list to the above immoralities? Let me answer you Mavambo, even though I am not the editor. It is probably a technical glitch. You are one of the few on this forum who do not deserve any censorship. If the editor can allow drivel from the Bla Dogs, Nakedogs, Jumpdogs Chandogs etc, why would he censor the only other somewhat sober comments (apart from mine) on this forum?
This is not an issue of chauvinism or discrimination. It is an issue of biblical interpretation.The Word of God proclaims, “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent” (1 Timothy 2:11-12). In the church, God assigns different roles to men and women. This is a result of the way mankind was createand the way in which sin entered the world (1 Timothy 2:13-14). God, through the apostle Paul, restricts women from serving in roles of teaching and/or having spiritual authority over men. This precludes women from serving as pastors over men, which definitely includes preaching to, teaching, and having spiritual authority.

The laws of man can never usurp what The Bible says, nor can they equate to it. Churches should decide whether they want to follow the laws of man or the laws of God. There is nothing about gender balance in the bible, unless someone wants to print their own Bible. The vast responsibility for the works of God, from Genesis up to Revelation was given to men, with one or two women providing support and leadership where necessary. That is God’s order. There those who think they are cleverer than God, by seeking to anoint gay bishops and women bishops, they will be judged…
Where in the bible does it say women should not be ordained into priesthood? Please don’t use the devil’s words to describe God’s will. One can easily see how Satan has penetrated the Anglican Church. First, it was the homosexual issue which created the Bishop Bakare and Bishop Kunonga issue, the cutting of Sentamu’s dog collar and his subsequent inelligibility to be promoted and now woman can’t be bishops. What a circus.
Never in the bible has it been allowed to ordain women as priests or bishops. Actually the bible forbids such act. The protestant churches have lost it. I don’t deny that women can be gifted in church leadership but but what God says about it is the essence. Main stream catholic church are right not to ordain women in pastoral office.
