Patients Stranded As Doctors’ Strike Continues

By Own Correspondent| Patients here have been left stranded following the doctors’ strike which has crippled the health system since December 1 last year.

Doctors at government hospitals recently vowed to continue with the strike which is now in its sixth week.

State media reports on Monday claimed that some doctors at several hospitals across the country had agreed to go back to work after a deal had been struck with the government on Saturday.

However, the doctors later revealed that no such deal had been struck between the striking doctors and their employer.

Relatives of patients who spoke to ZimEye at Chitungwiza General Hospital said doctors were not attending to their loved ones and there was no point in being admitted at the institution.

Said Linda Manyere whose sister is nursing injuries from an accident:

“She is in pain but the doctors are not here. It is our prayer that the doctors and government reach an agreement because we are watching our relative dying a slow and painful death because no one is helping her.”

Government has however remained adamant that it cannot afford to pay civil servants in forex arguing that “it does not print foreign currency”.

Four Die In Beatrice Accident Involving A Honda Fit

Four people died while 11 others were seriously injured when a commuter omnibus and a Honda Fit they were travelling in collided head-on at the 44km peg along the Harare-Beitbridge Highway on Sunday evening, police said.

Three people died on the spot, while another passenger died upon admission at Chitungwiza Central Hospital, police spokesperson Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba confirmed yesterday.

“Circumstances are that a Honda Fit with three passengers on board was travelling towards Harare, while the Toyota Hiace with 10 passengers on board was travelling towards Masvingo. On approaching a curve at the 44km peg along the said road, the driver of the Toyota Hiace tried to overtake in front of the oncoming Honda Fit, resulting in a head-on collision,” she said in a statement.

Charamba said all the bodies of the deceased were at Chitungwiza Central Hospital awaiting a post-mortem.

Meanwhile, the Passengers Association of Zimbabwe (PAZ) is urging schools that do not own buses to hire roadworthy vehicles to avoid road deaths as pupils return to schools.

“Many students will be travelling to boarding schools as schools open. Some schools have their own buses, while others do not. We are encouraging boarding schools that do not own buses to hire roadworthy buses that have passenger liability cover,” PAZ said in a statement.

“We are calling upon all boarding and day schools to insure their buses. Passenger liability cover is a necessity. In the event of an accident, students and staff will be assured of compensation. According to our observation, there are many school buses that do not have passenger liability cover.”

Hospitals Turn Back Patients As Strike Revive

MAJOR public hospitals across Zimbabwe are turning away patients as a strike by doctors enters its sixth week.

There is no end in sight to the strike, as President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government says it cannot meet the doctors’ demands.

The Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals, Zimbabwe’s largest treatment center, is largely empty as a doctors’ strike that began December 1 drags on.

Sixty-nine-year-old Kasirina Zibveka had a lung infection in September, according to her medical records. After numerous tests were done, it was confirmed that her right lung had gone bad and needed to be removed.

But by then, doctors were on strike. She was discharged December 13 and was told to return Monday for the ailing lung to be removed. But with the strike unresolved, that did not happen.

Her daughter, Margret Chikoti, says the family has paid for her treatment, but only nurses are attending to her mother.

“We have no idea what is really happening to her since December 13,” she said. “All we see is her discharging some blood stained stinking fluids [through a hole pierced by nurses under her right breast]. What is happening inside her body? Is it getting worse? We just give her painkillers and use ointment to clean her wound. We hope that their negotiations [doctors and government] bear fruit and they return to work.”

Doctors held a meeting Monday and resolved to remain on strike until their demands are met. The doctors want the government to equip hospitals with modern technology, sufficient medicine and protective clothing for doctors.

They also want to be paid in U.S. dollars instead of Zimbabwe’s depreciating currency, known as bondnotes.

“We will not accept the money that they are refusing. We want the money that buys,” Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association Vice President Marambire Sinaravo Jongwe said this to his members. “We are very understanding people, we are very lenient to our government. They are just trying to ignore us, they are very insincere to doctors. But yet we are saving the public, the general of Zimbabwe. For our patients we care, the government does not care.”

The doctors also say they do not want to prescribe drugs that are not in stock, a practice that forces patients to seek out black market drugs.

The Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe has warned about such drugs being fake, expired and unsafe to use.

The government, meanwhile, said last week it is not in a position to pay doctors or any civil servants in U.S. dollars.

Officials say they have imported medicines and are now stocking hospitals. But with doctors still on strike, that news might not be enough to help patients like Kasirina Zibveka.

VIDEO LOADING BELOW:

ZimEye on Monday night conducted a review of the latest developments amid a LIVE video report that states that soldiers, CIO officers and judges combined have told teachers to increase their flames of protest against Emmerson Mnangagwa and his deputy Constantino Chiwenga. The development comes as it emerged Zim doctors are being paid a paltry $85 (USD) per month for juniors, while seniors are being given less than $290 (USD).

This comes at a time when in other nations like Canada, doctors are doing the very opposite- telling government to lower their salaries (currently set at USD 30,000 per month).

Below was the full part speech of the teachers’ report that members of the military, the CIO, and also the country’s magistrates and judges have telephoned telling them to increase the fires on Emmerson Mnangagwa.

ANC Youth League Orders Party To Take Rigging Revelation Seriously And Investigate

ANC YOUTH LEAGUE KZN STATEMENT ON VIDEO DETAILING THE FRAUD USED TO ELECT CYRIL RAMAPHOSA AS PRESIDENT OF THE ANC

The African National Congress Youth league in KZN is concerned by the viral video and affidavit of an individual claiming to have been paid to cheat the process leading up to the ANC’s 54th national elective conference.
If the video and its affidavit is to be believed, it paints an ugly picture of corruption, money laundering and fraud to secure President Cyril Ramaphosa as ANC president.

As the youth league we are disgusted that NEC member Zizi Kodwa has called the whistle blower a conman instead of calling for an investigation into the confession. We cannot go to the national elections with a leadership that may have used dubious machinery to get elected into the ANC’s leadership.

We are therefore calling on the National Executive Committee to intervene urgently.

Ramaphosa Rigged The ANC Elections, Party Plays Down The Key Revelation

Own Correspondent|The ANC’s Zizi Kodwa has downplayed allegations by a man purporting to have taken part in fraudulently granting party membership.

The governing party’s national spokesperson’s described Thapelo Leponesa as a conman.

The statement follows an affidavit and video by one Thapelo Leponesa who claims he and several other party members were hired to rig the party elections that elevated Ramaphosa to presidency.

Leponesa claims in the video that he and others cheated documents leading to the ANC’s 54th national elective conference.

He said they fraudulently worked documents in order to send illegal delegates to Nasrec.

Kodwa said Leponesa is not a real member of the ANC.

The full exposè by Leponesa reads as follows:

AFFIDAVIT:

I Thapelo Leponesa ID. 8407026057082 state under oath that myself and other comrades cheated documents leading to the ANC’s 54th national elective conference. We fraudulently worked the documents in order to send fraudulent and ilegal delegates to Nasrec

1. Sometime in July 2017, I was approached by Cde Abiel Mokotso the former Regional Secretary of Thabo Mofotsanyana. We met at the regional office whilst I was paying a visit there to my other comrades.
He requested me to assist him in putting the membership of the region in order so as to have less administrative work towards Nasrec. When I asked him why he chose me he told me that its because he knew that I was very helpful to my branch secretary hence my branch file is always in order.

2. I agreed to his request since I knew that it was imperative and almost obligatory that every member of the organisation should play an active role in the life of the organization.
To me it was just a genuine cause with no ulterior motives.

3. This started during the preparations of regional conferences leading up to the Provincial and national conferences which were to sit later in the end of the year. At the time they were holding BGMs and subjecting  branches to audit and verification.

4. He indicated that they were less resourced and they could not manage to deposit bulks of membership at the bank.
He also asked me if don’t I know a place that makes stamps so that I can take him to inorder for him to order some bank stamps. On the following day I then took him to a Parkistanian guy ( Jamin) who has an outlet that manufactures the stamps and other things. We requested stamps for the following FNB branches in the Free State:
– Brandwag
– Botshabelo
– Setsing
– Bethelehem
– Harrismith
– Bloemfontein
– Phuthadithjaba.

5. We took the stamps and went straight to Kroonstad myself, Cde Abiel, Cde Linda and Cde Gilbert to first help Cde Kgotso and Cde Letsatsi who are based in Lejweleputswa Region. When we got there we found them waiting for us at a certain guest house already having bulk membership forms tha needed bank stamps as well as some filling of some details on some forms and some forms were fully filled only needed a stamp.

6. Abiel then booked a room for us to work and sleep on. They asked me to check in and later came in carrying with them the stacks and stacks of bulk ANC membershio forms.
We divided the work among ourselves and allocated difeerent responsibilities. My duty was to put a stamp, Cde Abiel was making signatures, Cde Linda and Gilbert were sorting the membership.
We worked there two full days and whilst on it Cde Thabiso and Cde Mafereka Ellias were called by Cde Abiel to come and assist as the task at hand was a mammoth one.

7. On the first day we worked overnightand in the morning Cde Letsatsi and Kgotso came to pick up what we had finished to give branches so as to go to audit which was on going. We continued the next day doing membership so as to make sure that we are done the time they come to pick it up for audit the following morning.
The accommodation, catering and everything that we would need was catered for by Cde Abiel and we were using his white Hyundai Vehicle criss crossing the province.

8. After we had done with Lejweleputswa Region my team headed to Bloemfontein to assist Motheo Region. I had remained behind in Kroonstad to attend to a night prayer at my church.

A week later we reconnected in Phuthaditchaba and we met at Wimpy there for breakfast.

Whilst enjoying our breakfast Abiel got a call from Mxolisi Dukwana and after the call he instructed me and my team to go to Cape Town to assist the Western Cape province the same way we assisted Lejweleputswa Region.

We flew to George from OR Tambo airport and we were received by Cde Titi who booked us a place to work and sleep on in Protea Hotel for about three days.

From the airport we went straight to the regional office where Cde Titi directed us to the boardroom and brought Cde Qonda to introduce him to us. After the introductory remarks and so on, they left and CdeTiti came back bringing bulk membership forms where some of them were half filled, some filled fully, some only need a signature and some needed a bank stamp. The overall objective was to produce more membership and have it in good standing at the same time so that it could participate in the Nasrec Confrence in December.

9. It took us about half a night to finish all the forms given to us because we had no bank receipts to use for proof of payments. In the morning we drove to Knysna FNB to collect a batch of deposit slips to use for that region as George FNB no longer used the green receipts.
We used those green receipts after having put the stamp on them to validate membership and to also serve as proof of payment
Cde Titi came in the evening to fetch the forms and delivered them to the regional office. We then went to sleep.

A week later we went to Cape town with a team assembled by Cde Linda which included the following Cdes;
– Cde Nerina Selelpe
– Cde Ellias Mafirika
– Cde Linda Mthombeni

This team was taking orders from Cde Titi Mokebe who is a close friend of Cde Mxolisi Dukwana residing in Frankfort.

We then proceeded to Dullar Omar Region in Cape Town where we were booked in Protea Hotel Waterfront for a week.

10. During the day Cde Titi would go collect the membership from branches and we would work during the night.

The bulk membership he brought was also incomplete as it was not filled and no stamp and signatures. We were expected to do the same routine work as we had done to the other regions.

We also used the green receipts

After completing Dullar Omar we went back to Free State as Cde Mbalula had lost his mother. Same day ater the funeral we went to the operation centre at the new mall at Thabo Manyoni’s office.

11. The following Monday I went back to Western Cape in Cape Town to finish up the task. On Wednesday we drove to Hermanus and when we arrived there we were taken to the regional office and met Cde Themba who allocated an office for us to work in.

Already stack of bulk branch membership forms were there.

It took us only one day to complete the job there and we drove back to Cape Town.

We then left for about 3 days and came back to assist with corrections as the audit was on going and we were now booked at Hollo Square hotel.

12. After the ANC’s elective conference I begun to be very effected by what I did, having understood that I committed all these evil acts.

“Marcus Rashford” Appears In Court On Fraud Charges

Correspondent|20-year-old car salesman, Ismail Duwa Austin, from Chitungwiza who has caused a stir on social media and has become a worldwide sensation for his uncanny resemblance to England and Manchester United star forward Marcus Rashford has been arrested.

Austin appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ court facing fraud charges. He was remanded out of custody and granted $50 bail.

According to the prosecution, Austin defrauded one Grace Chikwava of US$3000. The court heard that the Marcus Rashford lookalike advertised a Mercedes Benz Vito on his Facebook page.

After Chikwava saw the advert, she negotiated with Austin and agreed to pay US$400 deposit to show commitment and for Austin to stop advertising the car. Chikwava later finished paying off the full amount only for Austin to become evasive about delivering the car.

After failing to get straight answers from the internet sensation, Chikwava filed a police report leading to the arrest of Austin

Second Of Hwahwa Bound Escaped Prisoners Dies In Hospital

Correspondent|The second of the three prisoners who jumped off a moving vehicle transferring four inmates from Harare to Hwahwa Prison in an escape bid has died, officials said.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) spokesman Simon Kawondo said the prisoner died from the injuries he sustained at Gweru General Hospital yesterday.

“He sustained serious injuries when he jumped off the moving truck around the Lalapansi area and he died at Gweru General Hospital. The first died on the spot, but the third is still at large,” he said.

The three prisoners jumped off a ZPCS truck after outsmarting their two security escorts, while a fourth remained behind.

Kawondo advised the public not to attempt apprehending the missing prisoner, but inform the police.

Wife Finds Hubby Busy Raping His 13 Year Old Step Daughter

A 32-year-old Silobela man has been sentenced to 60 years in jail for raping his 13 year- old step daughter on four occasions.

The man who cannot be named to protect the identity of the minor, is from Cetshwayo Village under Chief Malisa.

He was convicted of four counts of rape by Gweru regional magistrate Mrs Phathekile Msipa.

Mrs Msipa sentenced the man to 15 years in jail for each count coming to a total of 60 years imprisonment.

The accused will however serve an effective 30 years in prison after the magistrate ordered the other 30 years to run concurrently with the first 30 years.

In passing sentence, Mrs Msipa said as a father, the man was supposed to protect his step-daughter instead of deflowering her.

“You took in the child as your child when she was two years old and when she was 13 years old instead of protecting her, you raped her several times against the principles of parenthood. Your crime is severe and calls for a long custodial sentence to deter would be offenders. You are sentenced to 15 years in jail for each count. The sentence for count one and two will run concurrently with count three and four giving an effective 30 years in prison,” she said.

It was the State case that in June last year, the accused person saw his step daughter talking to a certain boy along a path that leads to their homestead.

When the complainant arrived home, she was called by the accused who asked her if she had started having love affairs with boys.

The accused told the complainant that he was going to tell her mother about the issue and she will be chased away from home and become a street kid.

The court heard that the accused then took an okapi knife and put it in his pocket before demanding to have sexual intercourse with her.

He then raped her once.

In the same month he raped her again twice.

On the fourth time, the complainant’s mother left for the shops before returning unexpectedly and found her daughter being raped by her husband.

The matter was reported to the police leading to the arrest of the step-father.

Mr Kelvin Guveya appeared for the State.

Former Minister David Parirenyatwa Evicted From House

FORMER Minister of Health and Childcare David Parirenyatwa has been evicted by an order of the High Court from a house he bought after he failed to settle an outstanding balance.

High Court judge Justice Isaac Muzenda on December 19, 2018 issued an order in his chambers evicting the former minister from the house and also slapped him with costs on a high scale.

“Whereupon after reading documents filed of record, it is ordered that the agreement of sale for stand 5163 Salisbury Township, of Salisbury Township lands, measuring 3 150 square metres and the improvements thereon entered between plaintiffs (the Patels) and defendant (Parirenyatwa), be and is hereby cancelled,” Muzenda said.

“Defendant and all those claiming occupation through him are hereby evicted from the property. Defendant is ordered to pay costs of suit on an attorney and client scale.”

The location of the property was, however, not mentioned in the court papers.

Parirenyatwa was in November 2018 issued with summons by three local businessmen, Divaliben Patel, Sharmila Parbhubhai Patel and Umeshkumar Parbhuba Patel, but failed to enter appearance to defend, prompting the trio to apply for a default judgment in December 2018.

According to the court papers, the three, through their lawyers, Muronda and Malinga Legal Practitioners, had filed the litigation accusing Parirenyatwa of breaching an agreement entered into between the parties on April 8, 2014.

In their joint declaration, the three said on the date in question, when the agreement was signed for the purchase of the property, they were represented by one Armutlal Patel.

They said the two parties had agreed on a $400 000 purchase price, but Parirenyatwa is said to have paid $109 000, leaving a balance of $291 000.

The plaintiffs said when they sealed off the deal, the former minister undertook to pay the money through a CABS mortgage bond within 21 days from the date of signing of the agreement of sale, but reneged on his obligation.

According to the businessmen, Parirenyatwa breached the agreement by failing to settle the balance of the purchase price and to rectify the breach even though he was, on several occasions, called upon to do so.

They also said despite demand, Parirenyatwa had refused and/or neglected to pay the outstanding balance and to vacate the property.

Bootlicking ZANU PF MP Says Election Thief Mnangagwa Was Chosen By God And Will Solve Economic Woes

THE country under the leadership of President Emmerson Mnangagwa will achieve the upper middle income economic status by 2030, a Zanu-PF MP has said.

Addressing hundreds of party supporters gathered in Lalapanzi at Cambri Primary School to celebrate the victory of Prosper Machando who was elected Member of Parliament for Chirumanzu- Zibagwe in the July 2018 harmonised elections, Gutu West MP John Paradza who was the guest of honour yesterday urged every Zimbabwean to rally behind President Mnangagwa and his Government.

First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa was previously the constituency’s MP but relinquished the seat to work for the whole nation.

Paradza said President Mnangagwa was a God chosen leader who was committed to turning around the economy.

“We went for elections and the ruling party did well as evidenced by Cde Machando whom you elected as your MP. We crushed the opposition parties left- right and centre in Chirumanzu -Zibagwe. Such celebrations are done to thank the electorate for the confidence they have shown in the party and its leadership under Cde Mnangagwa.

“The Bible says leaders are chosen by God and ED was put in that position by God and therefore the need to appreciate him. He is the Biblical Joshua or Moses to lead us into Canaan which is the Promised Land though the path might be painful,” said Paradza.

President Mnangagwa, he said, is advocating for an upper middle income economy status by 2030, a vision that is achievable.

“We must remain resolute and with President Mnangagwa we will prosper, we will reach the Promised Land by achieving the upper middle income economy status by 2030,” said Paradza.

Addressing the same gathering, Machando said there was no need to hold grudges after the elections.

“This is not a rally; we are here to thank you for voting for Zanu-PF. Zanu-PF is a party with disciplined people and there is no need to hold grudges. There are people still saying we are for Machando and others saying different names. There are no Machando people or whoever. We only have Zanu-PF people. As your MPs we are saying down with factionalism, down with following certain individuals,” he said.

Machando urged people to look ahead in the wake of price hikes and fuel shortages saying it was just a passing phase.

“The Government is working tirelessly to ensure that we get fuel and other basic commodities at affordable prices within the shortest period,” he said.
Chirumanzu – South MP Barbra Rwodzi said the ruling party had done well in previous elections in Chirumanzu-South and Chirumanzu-Zibagwe constituencies because of unity of purpose among party members.

She castigated some greedy and self- centred individuals for creating factions in the Midlands province.

“Zanu-PF is one under the leadership of President Mnangagwa and as the party we have already endorsed him as our sole candidate for 2023. We are however not happy with some members who are dividing the electorate and that must come to an end. We are prepared to welcome back and work with members who had defected after losing primary elections, with others standing as independent candidates,” said Rwodzi.

Minister Set To Lose $60000 For Lying To The Media

A GWERU-based land developer, River Valley Properties (Pvt) Ltd is suing Midlands Provincial Affairs Minister Larry Mavima for $60 000 in defamation damages.

River Valley Properties, whose director is Ms Smelly Dube, accuses Minister Mavima of tarnishing its image by allegedly lying through some sections of the media that they did not follow proper procedures in the construction of Woodlands Park suburb in Gweru.

Minister Mavima allegedly told a local newspaper that the Government was working on administrative legal processes to seize the land that River Valley Properties had developed.

River Valley Properties, through its lawyers Ncube Attorneys, filed summons at the Bulawayo High Court citing the Provincial Affairs Minister, as the defendant.

In papers before the court, the company said the defendant’s statement was factually wrong.

The company said it followed all the procedures in line with the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing requirements.

“All proper procedures were followed and for the avoidance of doubt, River Valley Properties’ interests in the land in question were to develop it on behalf of the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing,” said the company’s lawyers.

“The words by the defendant in the context of his address were wrongful and defamatory of the plaintiff in that they were understood by the audience as insinuating that the plaintiff had benefited from unprocedural means of acquiring the land known as Woodlands Park, Gweru.”

The company said it suffered damages in the sum of $60 000 for tarnished reputation.

“Wherefore plaintiff claims judgment against the defendant for payment of $60 000 being damages suffered by the plaintiff as a result of the defamatory published article whose source is the defendant,” said River Valley Properties’ lawyers.

The company also wants the Minister to pay the legal costs.

Minister Mavima is yet to respond to the summons.

Last year teachers under the Zimbabwe Teachers Union (Zimta) took Gweru River Valley Properties to court for allegedly failing to deliver residential stands, which they had paid for.

The teachers, through their lawyers Munyaradzi Gwisai and Partners approached the Bulawayo High Court seeking an order directing River Valley Properties to refund them $15 845 which they paid in instalments for the stands.

They said between 2014 and 2015 on varying dates each one of them joined Mahlaba Housing Programme after River Valley Properties promised them residential stands upon paying $50 monthly over a period of 12 months.

The matter is still pending before the courts.

No Normal Economy Can Sustain The Bond Notes

Fitch Solutions, the macro-economic arm of global rating agency says Zimbabwe’s currency regime is highly unsustainable and will continue to fuel inflationary pressures going forward.

In 2009, the southern African nation ditched its own currency and adopted a basket of currencies anchored by the United States dollar after the country had gone through a devastating bout of hyperinflation.

Authorities went on to introduce a surrogate currency known as bond notes in 2016 as an attempt to plug a crippling shortage of bank notes. The bond notes were pegged at par with the greenback, but in actual value it is worth only a fraction of the United States dollar.

Government, however, still insists that they hold the same value, a situation which has caused market distortions and fuelled inflationary pressures.

“Food inflation carries a weight of some 32% in the total consumer price index basket, and the year-on-year rate for food and non-alcoholic beverages rose sharply to 42,71% in November, against 26,8% in October. The main determining factor in accelerating inflation, however, remains the country’s complex and unsustainable currency regime,” Fitch Solutions said in a recent report.

“Shortages of US dollars have led to a sharp fall in the value of bond notes and electronic dollars — the surrogate currencies which the government claims are valued at par in value with the US dollar — on the parallel market.”

A central bank directive last October instructing banks to ring fence hard currency deposits unnerved the market, causing the value of the bond note to plunge even further. As a result, the country has been witnessing shortages of basic goods and fuel.

Some retailers have now adopted multi-tier pricing models, offering discounts for customers paying in hard currency.

“The latest intensification of inflationary pressures reflects an expansionary fiscal policy, including a 15% pay increase granted to civil servants in the run-up to the July 2018 legislative election, higher international energy costs and increased local food prices,” Fitch Solutions said.

However, economists continue to dispute these figures as they seem to greatly differ with what is transpiring in the market.

In a post on micro-blogging site, Tweeter, American economist Steve Hanke, questioned the inflation figures from the statistics agency.

“Forex shortage is forcing bakers in Zimbabwe to source US dollars from black (read: free) markets, raising the price of bread; a clear example of why I use free market rates to calculate inflation and why I put Zimbabwe’s inflation at 178% (way above the official figure)”.

In 2009, government stopped providing official inflation data after month-on-month inflation rate reached an estimated 79,6 billion percent.

Civil Servants Confess Of Poverty To Government

TEACHERS yesterday said they were too poor to go back to work as schools open countrywide today, piling pressure on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to solve the worsening economic crisis.

This came as talks to resolve the impasse with teachers failed, while doctors voted to continue their month-long strike for better working conditions.

Addressing journalists after a meeting with Labour and Social Welfare acting minister July Moyo, Apex Council acting chairperson Thomas Muzondo said civil servants welcomed the government’s commitment to negotiations, but their members will not continue working until their employer addressed their conditions of service.

“So for now, as government workers, we are not on strike, but you may see some other workers not reporting for work and it is really because of incapacitation and not a strike per se,” Muzondo said.

“At this point in time, we are saying our members are unable to continue with the service. We are not saying they are on an industrial action, but they are incapacitated. They (parents) should send pupils to school; fees have gone up and their (teachers’) salaries are still static. Basic commodities have gone up five or six times, but salaries have remained static over the same period.”

Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (Zimta) president Richard Gundani told NewsDay that all workers organisations in the Apex Council provided evidence to government of impoverishment at the meeting.

“We showed how incapacitated teachers and the civil servants are as a result of the spike in prices and the erosion of the salaries and justified why teachers are not able to go to work. There is unanimous agreement by all workers who were in attendance that salaries have to be reviewed,” he said in response to questions.

“Government responded by directing that the process of negotiation, which had collapsed, should begin in order to find solutions to the problems. The meeting ended with workers insisting that incapacitation was an urgent matter that would only stop after teachers are paid salaries commensurate with the obtaining prices.

“Zimta’s declaration of incapacitation stands until a solution is found. However, we appreciate dialogue with government at ministerial level and the frankness that characterised (yesterday’s) engagement.”

Teachers want to be paid in United States dollars, or alternatively, at least $3 000 in the surrogate bond note currency, among other demands.

The meeting was chaired by Moyo and attended by Higher Education minister Amon Murwira and a number of permanent secretaries from various ministries.

Moyo called the meeting in a last-ditch attempt to stop a proposed nationwide strike by restive government workers.

Addressing journalists before Muzondo, Moyo said government had an offer ready for civil servants that would soon be tabled at the National Joint Negotiating Council.

“The conclusion of this discussion is that there should now, whether immediately now or tomorrow, go into negotiations, where government will offer in terms of ameliorating the plight of civil service in the areas that they have demanded in transport in salaries and in other non-monetary issues such as housing,” he said.

“Now that we have discussed broadly, they should go back to the Joint Negotiation Council because it is the statutory board that can come up with signed agreements for us to go forward. So, ours was a consultative meeting and that is why we did not want to discuss in the open glare of you members of the media and that is why we are briefing you members of the media.

“Yes, government has an offer certainly and they will discuss. They will discuss and agree on timing, on certain parameters and the civil service, on the trade unions side, they can also offer many alternatives. For example, if there is an increase, shall it apply to everybody across the board or do we favour those who are impacted only?”

Moyo said government explained to the workers on the challenges faced in the economy and the wanton and irrational price increases and government’s commitment to cushion its workers.

“Normally, those who are junior, whose salaries are much lower, who are impacted on by the same conditions in the economy, so that we will leave to them to make proposals, but that is when government has given them an offer,” he said.

Doctors at public hospitals, who have been on strike for over a month, met at major referral hospitals across the country and voted to continue their job action until government reviews their salaries and working conditions.

In a statement, the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors’ Association (ZHDA) said some of its members who had gone back to work yesterday had rejoined the strike.

The statement was released after meetings at the country’s four major referral hospitals, where the doctors conducted a secret vote to decide if they should continue the strike or return to work.

Sources close to the developments told NewsDay that doctors based at Parirenyatwa, Harare Central and United Bulawayo hospitals voted overwhelmingly for the strike to continue, but Mpilo Central, with a split vote, eventually decided to go with the majority decision.

“The ZHDA members have, therefore, remained incapacitated and will not be able to resume normal duty until these matters have been addressed by the employer,” the statement read.

“It is important to note that the available ZHDA members who had shown up for duty in various hospitals have since indicated they will be re-joining those at home until the grievances have been met.”

Since Saturday, when government claimed it had resolved the situation, a widening rift was forming among the striking doctors, as some reported for duty yesterday, while the rest carried on with their industrial action.

The strike had forced government to reach out to the military to provide relief at public hospitals.

Harare Central Hospital chief executive officer Nyasha Masuka confirmed that several of the striking doctors reported for duty yesterday, but were yet to write letters confirming their return to work.

On the deployment of army staffers to provide relief services in hospitals during the absence of the striking doctors, Masuka said they had been given the greenlight by Health permanent secretary Gerald Gwinji to request for help from the uniformed forces to cover for the shortage created by the striking doctors.

Four People Killed In Beatrice Road Accident

Correspondent|FOUR people died while 11 others were seriously injured when a commuter omnibus and a Honda Fit they were travelling in collided head-on at the 44km peg along the Harare-Beitbridge Highway on Sunday evening, police said.

ZEC’s Qhubani Moyo Owned Bulawayo Radio Station In Major Reshuffle Of Presenters

BULAWAYO’S sole private radio station, Skies Metro FM has shuffled its presenters.

The radio’s station manager, Godwin Phiri, told NewsDay Life & Style that listeners should gear themselves for more exciting programming in the new season.

“We have had to change a few of our presenters around. The decision has been necessitated by the realisation that some of our presenters could add value to some of the shows that have been lacking in the past,” Phiri said.

“It is our expectation that the movement of presenters will bring about the flair that our listeners have been yearning for. We are confident that there is a-little-something that the listeners will gain from the shuffling of these presenters that we have done.”

Popular comedian-cum-disc jockey and entertainer, Babongile Skhonjwa will now be joined in the premier Vuka Vuka breakfast show by versatile presenter Thandisiwe Dube, popularly known as TKP

Skhonjwa, in the previous arrangement, co-hosted the morning show, which has attracted huge advertising volumes alongside Donna Ncube and sportscaster Master E, real name Eli Tamirepi.

The mid-morning to afternoon show will now be hosted by Ncube, who replaced Manurse Ndlovu who has taken over the drive-time radio show.

Ndlovu joins main drive-time show host Benkosi “BKay” Maphosa in the show that takes listeners home after their busy daily routines.

“The breakfast show during the weekends, will be hosted by Khaya Drastic, christened Khayelihle Moyo, while Possenti Sikhosana, the mellow Soul Affair programme host, will hold fort on the Sunday mid-morning shows. Multi-lingual presenter Densen Kulube has now been moved to host the Sunday evening shift from 6pm to 10pm,” Phiri said.

Phiri said the station would keep implementing new ideas, informed by market research in its bid to maintain a grip at the apex among stations that broadcast to the City of Kings and its environs.

According to the recently released Zimbabwe All Media Products Survey results, Skies Metro FM was the most popular radio station among those that broadcast to the Bulawayo audience.

“We would like to keep improving so that we maintain our pole position as the leading station in Bulawayo. There are other changes that will come as we go. We hope that the listeners will embrace and enjoy the programming that we have put up for the first season of 2019,” Phiri said.

Govt Offers Civil Servants Massive Increments in Bond Dollar Currency| GOOD NEWS or SHREWD NEWS?

July-Moyo
The ZANU PF regime has offered civil servants massive increments in their salaries albeit in Bond dollar currency.

The Acting Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister July Moyo speaking yesterday said they tabled a massive salary increment offer to civil servants.

He said the workers should now go into negotiations with Government today. Moyo said, “the conclusion of this discussion is that they (workers) should now, whether immediately or tomorrow, go into negotiations where Government will make an offer in terms of ameliorating the plight of the civil service in the areas that they have demanded, that is in transport, salaries and other non-monetary issues such as housing.

“Now that we have discussed broadly, they should go back to the NJNC because it is the statutory body that can come up with signed agreements for us to go forward. Government certainly has an offer and they will discuss and agree on timing and certain parameters.

“The trade unions can offer many alternatives, for instance, is the increase to apply to everybody across the board or do we favour those who are impacted on, that is, those whose salaries are lower? That we leave to them to make proposals.”

July Moyo, quoted by the state media was speaking after a consultative meeting between a Government team and public service staff associations in Harare.

Zim Churches Which Flew A Satanist To Zimbabwe To Meet Mnangagwa, Rubbish Doctors’ Protests

Johannes Ndanga who was once thoroughly bashed by Vapositori greets Energy Mutodi
By Mike Dube| The fake bishop who recently brought a Satanist to Zimbabwe, Johannes Ndanga has condemned protests saying that they are an act of desperation.

Ndanga who is the Apostolic Christian Council of Zimbabwe (ACCZ) leader, told the state owned Herald, “Demonstrations are an act of desperation. They are not a solution to problems but demonstrations are like conflicts.”

Meanwhile Ndanga was humiliated when the Satanist he brought to Zimbabwe was bunked by the povo and virtually no one attended her meeting at the National Sports Stadium in December.

Still No Support For 1 Aug Victims And Auxillia Mnangagwa Says She’s Launching A Program To Enable The GirlChild Attain Full Potential | REALISTIC or just PLASTIC?

Auxilia Mnangagwa
By Dorrothy Moyo| At a time when orphans of her husband’s military brutality have remained without any support, Emmerson Mnangagwa’s wife, Auxillia says she has upped the fight for the girl child.

On 1 August 2018, her husband carried out a military operation announced and planned 8 months before on LIVE ZBC television to scare off members of the public in order to change the election results. Several children who include the 13 year old daughter of the late Gavin Dean Charles are currently struggling without support after their parents were killed on her husband’s orders. Several others still have bullets lodged inside their bodies as they continue without medical support.

Auxillia yesterday met “stakeholders” at Zimbabwe House in Harare where she expressed her desire to see girls attaining their full potential. She announced plans to launch the “First Lady and the girl child” programme next month, the state media reports.

The state media says the programme will see her having interfaces with girls from Grade 6 to Upper Sixth.

The report continues saying, it will give girls a platform to share their experiences with the First Lady.

Yesterday’s meeting was held under the theme “Our girl, our pride, our future, let’s invest in her”.

It was attended by representatives from the ministries of Primary and Secondary Education, Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Health and Child Care, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs, Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprise Development and Sport, Arts and Culture.

Civil society organisations and the media also took part.

In her remarks, the Auxillia said: “This year one of the key area I am focusing on is the girl child programme. A girl child is facing a number of challenges in her journey of development from infancy to adolescence and to a young mother.

“The girl child is faced with a lot of pressures from different sectors of the society, from within the household to the community and society at large. Our girl-children need extra care and support through a listening ear.”

She said only engagement with the girl child would improve the situation.

“The girl child is more vulnerable. Not that we are to discriminate the boy child but special attention needs to be given to the girl child as the most disadvantaged children are girls. I hereby come up with a programme ‘First Lady and the girl-child’ where I would like to meet girls of school-going age and have an interface with them in an open environment which allows the girls to open up and share their real life experiences,” added Auxillia.

She said the girl child must be empowered.

“The focus would be to come up with social and economic solutions for the girl child in order to improve on their assertiveness, attitude to life, education, life skills as well as making informed decisions and being well disciplined. The girl child is part of our nation’s future citizens and we cannot just watch and expect a good future for them when we do not intervene at this point in time,” said Auxillia.

She said there was need for a paradigm shift in the manner the nation treats the girl child.

“In order for us to attain a prosperous upper-middle income economy by 2030, we need to have a paradigm shift in the way we have been doing business. Engagement with the girl child to hear from them and come up with informed interventions is one way to usher our girls to upper middle income economy by 2030. This can be achieved successfully if we work together as a team and brainstorm on this programme,” said Auxillia.

She cited early child marriages, teenage pregnancies, HIV and Aids infections and school drop outs as some of the challenges facing the girl child.

“This is resulting in the girl child’s future being jeopardised and in most cases there are few girls who are getting the opportunity to get out of such pits they would have fallen into. It is therefore critical that we engage our girl child from a tender age and dialogue with them on these issues to come up with practical and lasting solutions,” said Auxillia.

She urged coordination among stakeholders in the fight for the rights of the girl child.

“I intend to roll out the first activity of engaging girls of school going age. Society needs to accept that the challenges the girl child is facing need a joint effort of various stakeholders. Together as a team we can make great impact in addressing the challenges being faced by our girls. I am starting the first interface meeting with the girls here in Harare next month. The objective is to raise awareness on the need for the society to see the value of the girl child,” she said.

“This activity marks the beginning of a series of interfaces that would be held countrywide to ensure that all the girls across the country are reached.”

Organisations which attended the meeting pledged support.

African Union Ambassador for ending early child marriages Mrs Nyaradzai Gumbonzvanda said Auxillia had set the tone for 2019 in fighting early marriages.

“You have set the tone for 2019 for our intentions, for prioritisation of resources and for implementation of policies,” she said.

Mrs Gumbonzvanda said she was a product of early marriage and urged authorities to stop it.

Principal director in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education Ms Kwadzanai Nyanungo thanked the First Lady for the initiative.

Representative for the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development, Mrs Martha Muguti, said her ministry was committed to addressing challenges facing the girl child.

The challenge include shortage of accommodation for girls at tertiary institutions.

“Let us start by addressing these issues from a family set up. Girls are not born to be married. Parents and guardians must stop commercialising marriage,” she said.

Women Affairs, Community, Small and Medium Enterprises Development acting secretary Air Commodore Ivan Dumba said his ministry would work towards operationalising the national action plan to end child marriages.

The action plan was launched last month.

It seeks to intensify efforts towards ending early child marriages.

Drug Trafficking Escalates Due To Economic Crisis

HARARE – Drug trafficking in Zimbabwe has risen as criminal networks groom mules to smuggle
packets of hard drugs into the country, according to the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe (Mcaz) and ZRP CID drugs and narcotics squad.

The smuggling has been blamed for the escalating drug and alcohol abuse among the youths.
Speaking at an awareness campaign on drug and alcohol abuse, Mcaz projects and public relations officer Shingai Douglas Gwatidzo and detective Majaha Mkwananzi from the CID drugs and Narcotics squad said they are on high alert and
working tirelessly to reduce drug supply through raids at the ports of entry and on haulage trucks transporting the drugs.

Traffickers lure mules by getting them hooked on drugs or offering lavish pay to transport the drugs
into the country, in a sophisticated cross-border smuggling ring.
“There have been raids and arrests of haulage trucks transporting drugs at our country’s ports of entry and the law enforcement agency has intensified its operations as we work towards cutting these drugs supply,” Mkwananzi said.

He said while the law works on drug supply reduction on the streets, the health sector and the community will also have to work on the demand reduction and ensure that people quit
taking in these illegal and harmful drugs.
“The CID drugs and Narcotics office is working tirelessly to apprehend offenders and monitor places where drugs are rampant which are called
‘flash points’ where youths, pupils frequent for such activities,” said Mkwananzi.

Mcaz said it is working with Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) and the ZRP at the ports of entry to intercept the haulage trucks which
transport the illegal drugs.Daily News

Shock As Man Axes Wife, Hangs Self

A SILOBELA man fatally struck his sleeping wife with an axe on the head before committing suicide after discovering she was taking contraceptive pills without his knowledge.

Busani Mandava (35) of Langton Farm in Silobela, allegedly struck his wife, Chipo Basopo once in the head while she was asleep and she died on the spot. He then covered her with a blanket, took their three- year-old child to their neighbour before he proceeded to hang himself from a
tree using barbed wire.

Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko could not confirm the incident saying he was yet to get a report on the murder and
suicide case. However, Silobela MP Mthokozisi Manoki-Mpofu confirmed the incident that happened on Friday night.

“Yes I received information that there is a man who killed his wife before taking his own life,” said the MP who referred further questions to the area’s councillor. Ward 24 councillor Mr Ephias Shoko said Mandava left a note explaining why hecommitted suicide after killing his wife.

Cllr Shoko said on the fateful day, the couple spent the day working in their fields as usual.
“They spent the whole day ploughing in their field. They retired around 3PM before they went fishing in the nearby dam. Everything seemed fine for the young couple,” he said.

Cllr Shoko said he was shocked when people came knocking on his door at night informing him that Mandava was hanging from a tree.
“It is believed that the couple had a
misunderstanding over family planning issues. According to a note that he left which is in the hands of the police, he got angry when he discovered that his wife was taking
family planning pills without his knowledge,” he said.Chronicle

No Respite For Beer Drinkers As Delta Hikes Prices Again

Beverages giant, Delta Corporation,
yesterday announced new recommended wholesale and retail prices for its clear beer products that are sold across the country, a
move that has resulted in a 25 percent increase of the firm’s lager beer prices.

The move by Delta follows an announcement by the company to sell its products in hard currency citing that its business was being
“adversely affected” by foreign currency shortages, which resulted in the company failing to meet demand obligations.

The decision was, however, rescinded last week after the firm was engaged in talks with Government.Following the meeting with Delta executives, which also involved Vice President Constantino Chiwenga and RBZ Governor Dr
John Mangudya, Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube appealed to private firms to be patient while Government worked on fiscal
consolidation.

“We are saying the private sector should wait for us to give policy. They should be patient and see how our fiscal policy is making progress. We are making good progress in fiscal consolidation and once we
are ready, we will institute the requisite monetary reforms,” said Minister Ncube.

“They should not rush ahead to choose the currency they think the whole country should adopt. They should just be patient, let us work together. That is really our message,” he said.

Announcing the new prices, Delta corporate affairs executive Patricia Murambinda, said the latest increase is meant to cushion the beverages giant in the face of increasing local
costs.
“Delta Beverages has increased the
wholesale prices of clear beer by an average of 25 percent. The recommended retail prices have been adjusted accordingly.Chronicle

War Veterans Blast Civil Servants For Being “Unpatriotic”

HARARE – The Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans Association (ZNLWVA) has blasted civil servants for demanding to be paid in American dollars saying the public workers were ignorant of the challenges the country is facing.

“Where do they want government to get the foreign currency they want to be paid in? Do they want the government to go out there and look for work so that it can be able to pay them? Don’t they know that government does not own the
means of production?” ZNLWVA spokesperson Douglas Mahiya told the Daily News yesterday.

Mahiya directed the civil servants to industrialists and farmers whom he said are the real owners of the means of production — land, labour and capital. When it was put to him that industry and farmers have no obligation to pay government workers and that civil servants knew who their employer was, Mahiya got agitated.

“That is reckless talk to say they care less about where the money comes from and more about the value for their labour. You see, when people
discuss or negotiate it is always wrong to poke the other in the eye.
“Civil servants need to understand where this government is coming from. It is barely one year old and they already think that it will perform
miracles? Nobody can blame this government for what is happening. It is unfair,” he said.

He said the former liberation war fighters are keen to see the country united and working with President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration to correct the wrongs of the previous government led by former president Robert Mugabe.Daily News

Mliswa Defends Amai Mnangagwa, Says She Is Not Usurping Powers

By Own Correspondent| Independent legislator for Norton Temba Mliswa has defended the First Lady Auxilia Mnangagwa for her role in mediating the doctors, government impasse which saw her meeting representatives of striking junior doctors.

The meeting between the first lady and the doctors held at State House last week saw the state media The Herald reporting that doctors had gone back to work, an assertion which the doctors refuted as false.

However, Mliswa said there was nothing wrong with the first lady mediating  and negotiating on behalf of government for the striking junior doctors to return to work.

He said her role as someone who was passionate about heath issues was justified.

Said Mliswa:

“Amai has always had a passion  for the health sector and there was nothing wrong with her meeting the doctors when they approached her. She has a role to play. Its not usurping powers but even at home, culturally children approach mothers to get a message to their fathers.”

Auxillia Mnangagwa Accused Of “Usurping” State Power

President Emmerson Mnangagwa is
facing allegations of allowing his wife Auxilia “to usurp constitutional power”.

Analysts said Mnangagwa’s wife has no right to run government, and questioned in what capacity
she met striking doctors when she has no constitutional role in the State bureaucracy.Auxillia met with doctors at State House on Friday, in a bid to end the five week-long
industrial action. While Auxilia was meeting with the doctors, her husband was taking part in a clean-up campaign in Harare’s red-light district of the Avenues.

It’s deja vu, some said, drawing parallels with Grace Mugabe, whose meddling in government affairs prompted the ruling Zanu PF party to begin impeachment proceedings against Robert Mugabe on charges that included allowing his wife “to usurp constitutional power.”

United Kingdom-based law lecturer Alex Magaisa said Zimbabwe was walking down the same path
that led to Mugabe’s ouster.
“Lest we forget, this was part of the
impeachment motion against Robert Mugabe in 2017: Allowing his wife to usurp government functions and abrogating his constitutional mandate to his wife…,” Magaisa said.Daily News

Citizens Manifesto Solidarity Statement For Striking Teachers

By Own Correspondent| The Citizens’ Manifesto has called on the Goverment to recognize the economic emergency situation in the country calling on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to immediately commence an Inclusive All Stakeholders National Dialogue to work out a solution that works for all.

Said the Citizen’s Manifesto Convenor Briggs Bomba in a statement:

Citizens’ Manifesto Solidarity Statement on the ARTUZ Economic Justice Salary Protest

Today, 7 January 2018, rural teachers under the banner of Almagamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) commenced the “Economic Justice Salary Camp” with a gathering at Africa Unity square and an intended march to camp at Minister of Finance, Mthuli Ncube’s offices demanding US dollar salaries and improved working conditions.

Citizens’ Manifesto condemns the high handed response by the Zimbabawe Republic Police, who deployed heavily in an attempt to intimidate and harrass teachers who are only peacefully exercising their constitutionally guaranteed right to protest.

The ZRP went on to disrupt the teachers’ march to Mthuli Ncube’s offices and arrested 11 ARTUZ union leaders.

This development flies in the face of a recent ruling by the Harare Magistrates Court that affirmed the workers’ unions’ right to gather and protest.

Citizens Manifesto calls for the immediate release of the arrested teachers and for the government to urgently engage the justified salary demands by teachers, nurses, doctors and other civil servants.

Furthermore, Citizens’ Manifesto calls on the Goverment to recognize the Economic Emergency situation in the country and immediately commence an Inclusive All Stakeholders National Dialogue to work out a solution that works for all. The country risks plunging into total chaos if the government continues to ignore the unbearable pain and suffering faced by the majority of citizens.

Gvnt, Teachers In Salary Deadlock

By Own Correspondent| The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe has revealed that its protest is set to continue following a deadlock between g9vernment and teachers at the National Joint Negotiating Council meeting held on January 7 2019.

The ARTUZ said in a statement:

“The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union notes with disappointment the lack of seriousness and commitment to the welfare of the civil servants by the government.

At a meeting held at the Civil Service Commission on 7 January 2019 between civil servants from various sectors and government, ARTUZ was disturbed by the following:
1) The Central Bank Governor John Mangudya is adamant that government will not be paying civil servants in United States of America Dollars even though it allows goods and services to be traded in that currency.
2) Mangudya repeats the insult that the United States of America Dollar is equivalent to the Zimbabwe Bond Currency.
3) The Acting Minister of Labour and Social Services July Moyo gave no assurances on salary increments and full payment of 2018 bonuses

We thus reached a deadlock.

Meanwhile the ARTUZ salary camp continues in Harare.”

Masiyiwa Gave Zanu-PF US$60m To Sponsor Bloody 2008 Run-Off Elections, Jonathan Moyo

Correspondent|As the cyber war between former Information Minister Jonathan Moyo and businessman Strive Masiyiwa continues heating up, Moyo has sensationally claimed that the businessman gave Zanu-PF US$60 million to sponsor the bloody 2008 presidential run-off.

The run-off election was marred by violence and intimidation of voters and resulted in the deaths of at least 500 people according to the opposition.

Moyo claimed that Masiyiwa has a record of double-dealing by contributing funds both to the ruling Zanu-PF party and the opposition MDC party although his true allegiance was to President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Moyo also disparagingly referred to Masiyiwa as a “Bond note Billionaire” and claimed that the businessman has always been using his money to bailout Mnangagwa on a number of occasions.

Writing on Twitter in a purported expose, Moyo said,

CIZC Stands In Solidarity With Civil Servants

Media Statement|Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition (CiZC) stands in solidarity with civil servants who have embarked on job action following government’s continued failure to improve their welfare and working conditions.

The demands by the civil servants who include teachers, doctors, nurses and other health personnel are legitimate and we implore the government to desist from commandist approaches in addressing strikes by civil servants.

The military approach by Vice President Constantine Chiwenga, who had been assigned to negotiate with striking doctors is regrettable and has no place in a democratic society.

We reiterate our call that job actions within the public service serve to prove the Government of Zimbabwe’s failure to address Zimbabwe’s economic meltdown which has been characterised by foreign currency shortages, fuel shortages, cash shortages and spiralling prices of basic commodities at a time the majority of Zimbabweans are living far below the Poverty Datum Line.

We take with great exception sentiments from senior government officials that demonstrations from impoverished civil servants and ordinary Zimbabweans are meant to effect change in government.

The government needs to face the reality regarding the economic demise in the country which stems from a constitutional and political crisis following the November 2017 military coup and the much discredited July 2018 elections.

In addressing the strike by civil servants, the government ought to embrace an all stakeholders approach and negotiate in good faith.

The government needs to prioritise the welfare of its workers and the general citizenry as job actions within the public service are impacting negatively on ordinary citizens.

Over and above all this, we need to highlight that addressing the country’s political crisis through national dialogue is a prerequisite in addressing the economic crisis in the country.

Beer Consumers Block Overcharging Outlet From Receiving Beer From Delta

Irate residents in Chitungwiza this Monday blocked retailers at Chirunga shops in Unit K, Seke from receiving a consignment of beer and soft drinks, accusing them of extorting customers by charging unjustifiably high prices for the products.

A simmering tension was written all over the business centre as the stand-off between customers and retailers lasted for more than two hours.

The customers and some patrons of bars at the shopping centre flatly refused the retailers to receive a consignment of soft drinks and beer from Delta Beverages, calling on government to revoke the licences of such retailers.

The customers said it is unacceptable that retailers are charging double and in some cases triple the recommended retail price, describing such attitudes by retailers as an affront to government’s efforts to improve the livelihoods of its citizens.

There are growing calls for retailers to charge reasonable prices for basic goods, with some people even suggesting that manufacturers publish recommended retail prices for their products.

Announcement Of DRC Election Results Postponed Yet Again

The announcement of the results of the Congo’s presidential election has been postponed, the country’s top electoral official said.

The winner of the December 30 election would not be made public yesterday as expected, the head of the national electoral commission, Corneille Nangaa, said. The electoral commission would confirm the delay later yesterday.

The postponement in announcing the winner may increase tensions, as some Congolese see it as a way for President Joseph Kabila’s ruling party to manipulate the results in order to cling to power.

The Catholic Church, an influential voice in this strongly Catholic nation, said that it already knows there is a clear victor, according to data reported by its 40000 election observers deployed in polling stations. The church urged the electoral commission to announce accurate results.

The government has already cut internet access across the vast central African country to prevent any speculation on social media about who might have won the election.

Congo faces what could be its first democratic, peaceful transfer of power since independence from Belgium in 1960.

Election observers and the opposition have raised concerns about voting irregularities as the country chooses a successor to longtime ruler Kabila, although a landslide win by one of the opposition candidates could remove any doubts that the election was skewed to the ruling party’s candidate.

The US and the AU, among others, have urged Congo to release results that reflect the true will of the people. Western election observers were not invited to watch the vote.

While Congo has been largely calm on and after the December 30 vote, President Donald Trump informed House Speaker Nancy Pelosi that about 80 military personnel and “appropriate combat equipment” had been deployed to neighbouring Gabon to support the security of US citizens and staffers and diplomatic facilities. More will be deployed as needed to Gabon, Congo or neighbouring Republic of Congo, he wrote.

Ahead of the vote, the US ordered “non-emergency” government employees and family members to leave the country.

Congo’s ruling party, which backs Kabila’s preferred candidate Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, has called the church’s attitude “irresponsible and anarchist”

Mangoma is being accused of avoiding going to tender when he awarded a South Korean company rights to a government project on 24 October 2011.

“It is being alleged that I as former Minister of Energy and Power development, in the exercise of my duties as a public officer, connived with Joshua Chifamba to unlawfully and intentionally do that which was contrary to or inconsistent with my duties as a public officer by approving a business plan on the proposed switchgear technology transfer agreement between Techpro Company of South Korea and ZESA Enterprises a subsidiary of ZESA holdings without going through the tender procedures for the purpose of avoiding competitive bidding process thereby showing favour to Techpro Company of South Korea,” reads the warned and cautioned statement.

His lawyer Tonderayi Bhatarasa confirmed the arrest of the former MDC strong man.

“I can confirm that Elton Mangoma has been arrested. He was arrested mid-morning today (Monday). In fact what happened is that they asked him to present himself to their offices which he did.

“We went there, talked to them and after some time, they decided that they were going to lay charges on him. So, he is currently in custody at Malbereign police station…we hope to go to court tomorrow,” said Bhatarasa.

Gabon Junior Soldiers In Failed Coup Attempt

Own Correspondent|Soldiers in Gabon have attempted a coup, announcing the establishment of a “restoration council” after taking over the national radio station.

But the communications minister later on Monday announced most of the renegade military officers had been arrested and the situation was under control. There were still reports of shots being fired in the capital, Libreville.

Reading out a statement, the officers condemned President Ali Bongo who addressed his compatriots last week from Morocco for the first time since reportedly suffering a stroke in October.

“reinforced doubts about the president’s ability to continue to carry out of the responsibilities of his office”, said Lieutenant Kelly Ondo Obiang, leader of the self-declared Patriotic Movement of the Defence and Security Forces of Gabon.

“Once again, one time too many, the wielders of power deceptively continue to instrumentalise the person of Ali Bongo Ondimba, a patient devoid of many of his physical and mental faculties,” said Ondo Obiang.

Gunfire was heard around state television offices in the centre of the capital at about 6:30am (05:30 GMT), and military vehicles blocked access to the site.

Most of Libreville remained calm later in the day but there was a strong police and military presence on the streets and helicopters circled overhead.

A crowd of about 300 people had gathered at the radio station in support of the attempted coup, but soldiers fired tear gas to disperse them.

Bongo, 59, is said to have suffered a stroke on October 24 while visiting Saudi Arabia and has since been treated in Morocco. His family has ruled the oil-rich Central African nation for nearly half a century.

The president posted a video message recorded in Rabat and distributed via social and traditional media last Monday in which he admitted he had been “through a difficult period”.

But he added: “Today, as you can see, I am preparing to meet you again soon.”

Presidential spokesperson Ike Ngouoni later told AFP: “This speech is proof that President Ali Bongo is fully recovered. His health problems are now behind him.”

In a video circulating on social media, Ondo Obiang is seen in a radio studio wearing military fatigues and a green beret as he reads the statement. Two other soldiers with assault rifles stand behind him.

Ondo Obiang said the coup was being carried out against “those who, in a cowardly way, assassinated our young compatriots on the night of August 31, 2016” – a reference to deadly violence that erupted after Bongo was declared the winner of a disputed election.

A source close to the government told the Reuters news agency the plotters appeared to be a small group of soldiers.

The situation remained unclear Monday afternoon.

Government spokesman Guy-Bertrand Mapangou said four of the five officers who attempted a coup had been arrested.

“Calm has returned, the situation is under control,” he said.

Rural Teachers Hire MDC Youth Leader To Negotiate For Them

The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe has hired MDC Youth Leader Discent Bajila to be one of their key negotiators during a meeting with government on Monday.

Said Bajila, “The Amalgamated Teachers Union of Zimbabwe has invited me to be part of their negotiations with government on Monday. I have accepted the invitation and I will be meeting the ministers.”

Later in morning Bajila posted that the President of ARTUZ has been arrested while demonstrating outside Minister Mthuli Ncube’s offices.

“The President of ARTUZ Hs been arrested while we are inside the meeting with Mthuli Ncube and Mangudya. We condemn the arrest especially at a time when we are having dialogue with the ministers to deal with the plight of civil servants.”

Reported Bajila after the meeting,

“After the meeting between government and civil service unions we went to report to those who had sent. The rural teachers of Zimbabwe had occupied the entrance to Mthuli Ncube’s Office.

We had held a 3 hours long meeting with the Acting Minister of Labour and Social Services July Moyo, the Acting Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Prof Amon Murwira and the Acting Permanent Secretary for Finance Dr Guvamatanga who were sent by Acting President Chiwenga.”

The Dynamos Circus Returns

When other Premier Soccer League teams are busy on the transfer market, Dynamos are busy in the boxing ring, this time, the contestants being board chairman Bernard Marriot and club president Solomon Sanyamandwe.

When champions FC Platinum were announcing the arrival of Godknows Murwira at the club from Ngezi Platinum Stars, Dynamos were making an announcement that club president Sanyamandwe had been fired by Marriot.

Sanyamandwe is leaving the club barely six months following the departure of Keni Mubaiwa, who resigned after his attempts to fire coach Lloyd Mutasa were thwarted, coincidentally, by Marriot.

What is ironic is that Dynamos still went on to fire Mutasa soon after Mubaiwa’s departure, raising questions whether it was a case of Mutasa or a matter of a show of who was more powerful than the other.

What is clear from the goings-on at Dynamos, is that the unity of the founding fathers — the unity that built Dynamos to be the biggest football club in the country — no longer exists and the likes of Jairos Banda, Richard Chiminya, Freddy Mkwesha and Morrison Sifelani could be turning in their graves asking whether this is the Dynamos they fought so hard to build.

Whatever the case is, the latest developments, coming at a time when Dynamos are in depths of despair, do not give a good picture of what the future holds for the team that claims to have more than 7 million followers.

Dynamos should this time of the season be spending time on strengthening their team instead of the political football game of chess that has destroyed the club over the past three seasons.

For the sake of the future, the Dynamos family should reflect on the goings-on of the past three years and identify the source of all their problems and come up with a binding solution before their team sinks to Division One and eventually into oblivion.

With the way things are going, it will not be surprising to see Dynamos, once again, spending most of the season fighting relegation. So far, there has not even been a single player signing, the focus being on the administration as if they are the ones who wear the famous blue and white jersey.

FC Platinum have nothing to fear about Tunisian side Esperance might be three-time African champions, and Orlando Pirates, winners of the Caf Champions League in 1995 — at that time known as the Africa Cup of Club Champions — but Zimbabwean champions FC Platinum have nothing to fear about the Blood and Golds and the Buccaneers whom they were drawn with in the same group.

Names and history count in African and world football, but in reality, Esperance are not as strong as they were in the past and neither are Orlando Pirates, who have even struggled in their home Absa Premiership until of late.

Fine, Esperance won the title in 2017, after a 4-3 aggregate win over Al Ahly of Egypt, but there is no guarantee that the Tunisians — winners of the competition in 1984 and 2011 — will roar again this year while the 1995 show was Pirates’ best performance in the competition.

In fact, Pirates have been overtaken as the flag bearers of South African club football by Mamelodi Sundowns, who are also still in the competition but in a different group.

However, the fact that FC Platinum are playing teams with rich history in the competition, is enough motivation itself because the Midlands side know that victories over Esperance and Orlando Pirates would see them get recognition across the length and breadth of Africa.

What is even more encouraging is the fact that even though they are playing at Barbourfields Stadium, Norman Mapeza’s side have been given the advantage of playing their first group game at home — something that should give them a headstart should they win that January 12 match and pick up three points.

More importantly is the fact that a win over the South African giants would not only give them the confidence they need, but would also scare their next opponents who are Esperance in Tunis on January 18.

African football history dictates that teams that win convincingly at home usually go further in major tournaments and what the Zimbabwean champions need to do is to win all their three home matches convincingly, without looking at the results of the other teams in the group.

Even the coach of top South African side Mamelodi Sundowns, Pitso Mosimane, has made it clear that they only need to win all their home matches and probably pick up two points away from home to sail through to the quarter finals of Africa’s richest club competition.

Unfortunately, Kugona Kunenge Kudada have not been all that convincing at home, struggling against little Cnaps of Madagascar, whom they beat only 1-0 before stuttering to a goalless draw against AS Otoho D’yo of Congo Brazzaville.

At least the Zimbabwean champions did not lose those two matches, but they need to improve greatly if they are to win at home not only against Esperance and Orlando Pirates, but also against AS Horoya of Guinea, the other team in the group.

In fact, it is Horoya which FC Platinum should be wary of Teams that are seen as no-hopers are usually dangerous as Caps United would testify. The Green Machine were on the verge of qualifying for the quarter-finals of the 2017 competition until the team they least expected, Al Ahli Tripoli, ruined their chances with that 4-2 destruction of Makepekepe at the National Sports Stadium.

In 2008, Dynamos thought they had reached their second Caf Champions League final when they faced Cameroon’s Cotonsport, only for DeMbare to be thrashed 5-0 over the two legs, losing 1-0 at Rufaro Stadium and 4-0 in the return leg in Yaounde.

That is now history as FC Platinum have been presented with the chance to write their own piece of history. Nine points from all their three home games could probably put them in a strong position to reach the quarter-finals of the Caf Champions League — and become the first Zimbabwean team to do so since 2008.

Dynamos set the bar in 1998 when they reached the final of Africa’s biggest and richest club football competition when coached by Sunday Chidzambwa and the semi-finals in 2008 when under the coaching guidance of David Mandigora.

For FC Platinum, a quarter-final berth would be worth the celebration.

Trevor Ncube Says He Donated $5m To The MDC And It Disappeared

Correspondent|Alpha Media Holdings Boss Trevor Ncube has claimed that Five million dollars that was donated to the Opposition MDC was abused by the officials and went unaccounted. Ncube was responding to MDC Deputy national chairperson Tendai Biti who had refused claims by Ncube that the businessman has been funding MDC for many years.

“I was Secretary General for ten years. I am not aware of the alleged donations by these new benefactors of ours.” Tendai Biti had said.

In response Ncube questioned Biti about the missing $5 million.

“As SG for so long you will know $5million donated to MDC by other people not me disappeared and has never been accounted for. Will you deny that too?

“You can deny as much as you want. This will not change the facts. And you were in my home in Umwinsidale when you wanted to start that other party of yours. Will you deny that too?”

Questioned on why he funded the MDC, Ncube said he did it voluntary and now has decided to change his mind.

“Yes we willingly donated to help Zimbabwe have an opposition. I hate MDC suddenly turning against the same business people who sacrificed financially and otherwise. So unprincipled and unacceptable. Not under my watch!!

“For decades some of us supported the opposition MDC financially and otherwise. The opposition has disappointed many times. We have democratic right to change our minds.

“The same rich people that you are now abusing made it possible for MDC to be launched and fight elections. They poured millions into MDC. Try and find out why they have changed their minds instead of abusing them.

“I have personally funded MDC making it possible for you chaps to have an opposition. But we now refuse to continue supporting this type of MDC.”

Ncube has recently been openly supporting President Emmerson Mnangagwa and has been calling for sanctions to be removed.

ARTUZ #SalaryCamp Set To Continue Following Teachers, Gvnt Deadlock

By Own Correspondent| The Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe will tommorow continue with its protest where they will be camped at Finance minister Professor Mthuli Ncube’s offices.

The development follows a deadlock between government and teachers at the National Joint Negotiating Council meeting held on January 7 2019.

The ARTUZ said it was disappointed by the lack of seriousness and commitment to the welfare of the civil servants by the government.

Said the teachers body in a  statement:

“At a meeting held at the Civil Service Commission on 7 January 2019 between civil servants from various sectors and government, ARTUZ was disturbed by the following:
1) The Central Bank Governor John Mangudya is adamant that government will not be paying civil servants in United States of America Dollars even though it allows goods and services to be traded in that currency.
2) Mangudya repeats the insult that the United States of America Dollar is equivalent to the Zimbabwe Bond Currency.
3) The Acting Minister of Labour and Social Services July Moyo gave no assurances on salary increments and full payment of 2018 bonuses

We thus reached a deadlock.

Meanwhile the ARTUZ salary camp continues in Harare.”

Delta Hikes Beer Prices

Zimbabwe’s largest brewer Delta Corporation hiked beer prices by 25 percent on Monday citing high local costs, announcing the move days after it was forced to abandon another plan to accept only hard currency payments for its products.

Like many companies in Zimbabwe, Delta, which is 40 percent-owned by Anheuser-Busch Inbev, has been hit by an acute shortage of U.S. dollars, affecting its capacity to import inputs like concentrates and remit dividends to foreign shareholders.

Delta said it was still to make a decision on prices of soft drinks and other products.

“The adjustment to the wholesale price is meant to cushion against the significant increases in local costs, confirmed by the official inflation statistics,” Delta said in a statement.

Annual inflation soared to a 10-year high of 31.01 percent in November after prices of basic goods spiked.

Zimbabwe has experienced a shortage of soft drinks and beer since November with shops limiting quantities, while some businesses tripled prices to take advantage of the shortages.

Delta said last week it had abandoned a plan to accept only hard currency payments to cope with a crippling shortage of U.S. dollars, after the government intervened.

Human Rights Lawyers Rescue 9 ARTUZ Members Arrested For Demonstrating For Their Salaries

Own Correspondent|NINE leaders of the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) were on Monday set free after they were arrested by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) officers as they embarked on a demonstration protesting against poor remuneration and working conditions.

The nine ARTUZ leaders namely Obert Masaraure, Christine Jubane, Robson Chere, Regai Chinhuto, Fortune Jamela, Lawrence Mapengo, Andrew Munguri, Munyaradzi Ndawana and Gerald Tawengwa, who were represented by Doug Coltart of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, were released without any charges preferred against them.

The trade unionists had been arrested at Africa Unity Square in central Harare as they were about to march to Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube’s offices, where they intended to camp demanding payment of their salaries in foreign currency and full payment of their annual bonus.

Immediately after their release, the ARTUZ leaders and members besieged Ncube’s offices demanding the provision of adequate learning material at schools, the scrapping of the punitive tax on electronic transactions and a review of their salaries among other demands.

“Your Offer Is Ready”: Gvnt Tells Civil Servants

By Own Correspondent| Government says it has an offer ready for civil servants which they will soon table before the National Joint Negotiating Council.

This was said by Acting Minister of Public Service July Moyo after a meeting between government and public service staff associations in Harare today.

On the other hand, Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) President Takavafira Zhou, said teachers have agreed to work for two days a week due to incapacitation.

“In the next two weeks our modus operandi as a result of incapacitation would be working for 2 days a week. We hope within two weeks government would have capacitated us. In the event of failure we will move to another level. Henceforth teachers must send their instruments of combat and incapacitation clanking into gear,” said Zhou.

Knox Mtizwa On Target For Golden Arrows

Terrence Mawawa|Knox Mutizwa was on target on Sunday as he became the fifth Zimbabwean player to find the back of the net in the Match-day 16 of the Absa Premiership.

Willard Katsande, Terrence Dzvukamanja, Walter Musona and Kudakwashe Mahachi all scored yesterday and Mutizwa followed suit in his team’s 2-0 victory over Maritzburg United.

The 25-year-old netted the opening goal of the match with a header in the 10th minute. He could have gotten his brace moments later but failed to beat the keeper.

However, the striker picked up a knock towards the end of the first half and was not able to return for the second period.

His replacement, Joao Moreira doubled the advantage upon returning from the break.

The scoreline remained unchanged as Arrows win their first game of 2019.

Dembare Sign Mavhurume, Bakacheza As Machazane Quits

Terrence Mawawa|Dynamos have signed the duo of striker Hillary Bakacheza and defender Carlos Mavhurume on three-year contracts.

Bakacheza played for Triangle and FC Platinum while Mavhurume a former national U17 captain moves to the Harare Giants from Herentals.

The players are expected to join their teammates for training on Tuesday.

Reports have also linked former striker Edward Sadomba with a return to the club.

Meanwhile, captain Marshall Machazane has since left the club to join Harare City.

“Fighting In Mnangagwa’s Corner Is Masiyiwa’s Worst Blunder”

Terrence Mawawa|Prominent social media analyst, Antony Taruvinga has described Strive Masiyiwa as a “smart conman.”

See Taruvinga’s argument below: ”
Strive Masiyiwa made abnormal profits through the most talked about exorbitant price of a sim card and
per minute billing. So much more of a smart conman.

As a capitalist, he took advantage of the fact that mobile communication and internet services were on very high demand. So he had to produce sim cards in small quantities to make them scarce and expensive in the environment with high demand.

One had to part way with one’s cattle to get a sim card. At that time, same sim cards were being sold for R10 and P20 in South Africa and Botswana respectively. But here,
one had to lose around US$400 to get a sim card.

The people actually financed the growth and operations of that business. He only injected the initial capital which he quickly recovered through exorbitant prices.

The proceeds he got from sim card sales were then used to expand Econet networks to small cities and
rural as well as provision of internet services.

People never had the chance to judge him fairly because they blindly supported anything that Mugabe never liked. So the people identified themselves with the ill treated Masiyiwa who in turn robbed them. His wealth is without doubt all ill- gotten. His greatest mistake now is to be in the corner of an illegal anti-people government. He is now calling

Strive Masiyiwa

for removal of sanctions on behalf of Mnangagwa.

Strive Masiyiwa: Hero Or Villain?Asks Miriam Mutizwa

Terrence Mawawa|Human rights activist and businesswoman Miriam Mutizwa has written a statement that seeks to tell the story behind the Econet Wireless controversy.

See her statement below:”I have followed from the terraces as allegations and counter allegations have been made regarding the facts surrounding the origins of Econet and its evolution to a major telecommunications and solutions company beyond the borders of Zimbabwe.

Strive Masiyiwa left Zimbabwe some 20 years ago and the circumstances that led to his departure from Zimbabwe remain in dispute.

Mutumwa Mawere claims that Masiyiwa left Zimbabwe following his Masiyiwa’s court application to interdict the investigations that Mawere was heading in relation to corruption allegations against some of the officers working for First Mutual Life (FML) especially in respect of an unauthorised investment of Z$180 million that resulted in Masiyiwa gaining control of Econet on the back of a contribution by TSM Private Limited (TSM), a company in which Masiyiwa and his wife, Tsitsi, held about 67.5% shares.

Although it is represented in the prospectus that an amount of Z$43.5 million of Econet’s share capital post-IPO comprising 435 million shares of 10 cents each were issued and paid up by TSM, Mr Nyambirai confirms that the equipment was imported at a time when Econet’s technical partner was Telecel International. The intention was to launch a network using a mobile base station during the Solar Summit that was held at the Sheraton. Around that time, the partnership between Econet and Telecel International terminated.

Telecel International had been the guarantor of the facility for the purchase of the equipment. After difficult negotiations, the facility was transferred to Strive’s Family Company, TS Masiyiwa Investments P/L. The value of the equipment was Z$64,720,000.00. Thus, TSM was in turn owed the same value of the equipment by Econet. TSM decided to convert the shareholder loan into equity (shares) at a discount of 32.84% thus for shares worth Z$43,468,000.00 in Econet. This is how TSM came to hold a total 434,679,999 Econet shares in addition to the 320,001 shares that were already in issue.

This disclosure by Mr Nyambirai that is not contained in the Prospectus is significant because it implies that difficult negotiations were held resulting in the facility as alleged by Nyambirai being transferred to Strive’s family company (TSM) being a value of R64,720,000.00.

It is represented in the Prospectus that when Econet was established in 1994, it was a wholly owned subsidiary of TSM as follows:

In terms of the Prospectus, TSM was the sole shareholder of Econet and thus the version presented by Mr. Mutyambizi is factually incorrect that at some stage the investment alluded to by Mr. Nyambirai of $1 million made by Telecel International was converted into shares representing 40% of the pre-IPO Econet.

With respect to the disputed equipment, it is stated in the prospectus as follows:

It cannot be disputed by Mr. Mutyambizi that prior to Friday, the 14th of August 1998, the entire authorized share capital of Econet was issued and alloted to TSM only.

It is significant that although it is stated in black and white that TSM was owed Z$64,720,000 on loan account by Econet, Mr. Nyambirai has represented that this loan account was in respect of the equipment that had been purchased with Telecel International funds.

In terms of Mr. Nyambirai’s version, TSM could not have been credited with a loan asset for equipment that the company did not pay for without the knowledge and consent of Telecel International. It is not clear to me how funds provided by Telecel International mysteriously ended up in the Econet prospectus as an asset of TSM.

I have seen in the exchanges between Mr. Mawere and Mr. Mutyambizi that Mr. Mutyambizi believes that the equipment belonged to Econet which version precludes the TSM loan version.

It is recorded in the prospectus that TSM agreed to cede its loan account of Z$64,720,000 in Econet at a discount of 32.64% to Econet yet Mr. Mutyambizi believes that the equipment never belonged to TSM which makes the version in the Prospectus factually incorrect and legally unsustainable.

It boggles the mind that the same equipment that Econet claimed in court records to be its own was miraculously acquired by TSM resulting in TSM controlling Econet in relation to equipment that was already owned by Econet.

It seems to me that if the equipment belonged to Telecel International, then the version that this same equipment belonged to TSM was intentionally fraudulent in that it resulted in an unjust and corrupt enrichment of the Masiyiwa Family and related shareholders of TSM.

In addition it has been argued that TSM could not have had any nexus with the equipment based on the prevailing exchange control regulations of Zimbabwe at the time as follows:

It is clear that Econet directors were aware of the exchange control regulations that prevented TSM from having any nexus with equipment that was imported into the country without prior exchange control approval.

In relation to TSM, there is no mention in the IPO Prospectus as to how the equipment that had been represented prior to the granting of the licence by the High Court as belonging exclusively to Econet could end up being owned by TSM without any implications as to how the licence was granted to Econet rather than TSM.

I have looked at the shareholders of TSM to establish whether any of them was a non-resident person in terms of the Exchange Control definition, and this is what was represented in the IPO Prospectus:

It is clear that 100% of TSM’s issued share capital was held by resident individual Zimbabwean shareholders.

If this is accepted as a version, it is not clear how TSM could end up holding an asset worth Z$64,720,000 with no financial causa for it.

Obviously for this asset to exist, someone other than the shareholders of TSM would had had to have financed it.

Although this material information is missing in the Prospectus, investors were told that TSM was a solid company holding equipment imported into Zimbabwe without disclosing the party who financed this equipment.

I am reminded by my sister, Tsitsi Masiyiwa, who implored on people like me to seek true justice and avoid being used by other people, to pursue this matter to its logical conclusion. It cannot be in the interests of justice that TSM was issued with legitimate shares in Econet in lieu of an investment in form of assets that clearly could not have belonged to this country or its shareholders.

Who were the directors of Econet at the IPO stage? They were as follows:

It is stated in the Prospectus that: “The Directors whose names are given below collectively and individually accept full responsibility for the information contained in this document. To the best of the knowledge and belief of the directors, who have taken all reasonable care to ensure that such is the case, the information contained in this document is in accordance with the facts and does not omit anything likely to affect the import of such information.”

It is trite that the Directors of Econet at the material time had taken all reasonable care to ensure that the information in the Prospectus was true and fact.

To the extent that it was a lie that TSM owned the equipment that it had no nexus with, it follows that the Directors misled the public including FML policyholders who complained about the investment by the company without following the laid down procedures.

It is was also represented by the directors that: “The Directors confirm that the listing particulars include all such information within their knowledge as investors and their professional advisors would require and reasonably expect to find for the purpose of making an informed assessment of the assets and liabilities, financial position, profits and losses and prospects of the issuer and of the rights attached to the securities to which the listing particulars relate.”

In my worldview, it cannot be acceptable that the purpose of making an informed assessment of the assets and liabilities of Econet and the prospects of the issuer and of the rights attached to the securities to be held by the public was tainted by material concealment as to the true nature of the investment by TSM into Econet.

This is what Mr. Mutyambizi said to Mr. Nyambirai: “Thanks mukoma, that is the kind of narrative that clears the air beyond newspaper articles May I ask what transpired in terms of temporary import permit and duties due? Where did the capital come from mukoma? Were loans taken from NASA and others?”

He also said: “Thanks my bro your engagement has been invaluable, it’s truly much appreciated and the honesty has enhanced further my previous respect for you! Happy New Year in 2019. dialogue is always superior to emotionalism! Keep well my brother.”

I was shocked to read what Mr. Nyambirai had to say about the Mawere Commission of Inquiry into the FML affairs: “A commission of enquiry driven by Mr Mawere was set up. They harassed me quite a bit. I was employed at NMB at the time. We had handled the IPO as financial advisors. Their investigations did not find anyone palpable although we learnt that FML was forced to sell the Econet shares they held. Were it not for that, FML would be holding a stake in Econet and Cassava that would be larger than that held by OM. FML would be much bigger than it is.

All the noise being generated around Econet shares is mere froth and fume. There is no substance to it.”

I am waiting to hear from Mr. Nyambirai against the facts set out above, why he believes that the search for the truth some 20 years could possibly constitute a harassment. We are still nowhere near trying to understand the true facts of the listing of Econet and why Mr. Masiyiwa and Tsitsi ended up with 67.5% of TSM’s issued share capital and who played a part in creating this skewed outcome.”

Dr Ruhanya Defends Strive Masiyiwa

Terrence Mawawa|Prominent political analyst Dr Pedzisai Ruhanya has described the widespread criticism of Strive Masiyiwa as unfair.

In his argument Dr Ruhanya points out that Masiyiwa is entitled to his personal beliefs like any other person in a democratic society.

“Strive Masiyiwa is entitled to his personal opinions. The public is entitled to engage respectfully and
differ at the level of thinking.

Labelling him Zanu PF etc is  trigger happy and embryonic behaviour. Some of the opposition activists are intolerantly empty,” argued Dr Ruhanya.

Ex Soldier Plans “Surprise Visit” To State House And Confront ED Over Election Promises, Economy

By Own Correspondent| A former Zimbabwe National army officer, Knowledge Kafuramika (27) has revealed plans to storm the state house and confront President Emmerson Mnangagwa over his electoral promises and the deteriorating economic situation.

Describing his move as “bold”, Kafuramika told a local online publication that he believes Mnangagwa has failed the nation and should be held to account.

Said Kafuramika:

“We have reached a breaking point. The 2018 elections were supposed to bring hope to our future hence people should not take them lightly. Now after the elections there is no hope and we cannot be sure where the future lie.

“One thing I want to do is go to the state house and meet President Mnangagwa and tell him that he promised us jobs, a better life in 2019. We are in a new year and everyone has resolutions and goals. We want to realise that.

“For the youths it’s even worse because we have reached a breaking point where we care less about dying because we are dying already. If you look at the United Nations statistics on drug abuse, it’s very worrying,” said Kafuramika.

“I have a burden in my heart, I want to do this radical move and I know the consequences but I want to do this for my generation. I’m willing to sacrifice even my blood and I have to do it. It’s not about the money or any political agenda but it’s for the good of my generation,” he added.

Kafuramika added that he will not back down even even it means being abducted or tortured saying he is prepared to go the route followed by missing activist, Itai Dzamara.

The former President Robert Mugabe critic, Dzamara, went missing in March 2015 after he continuously called for the resignation of Mugabe and his whereabouts have remained unknown.

Zimbabweans have grown increasingly frustrated over the current state of the economy, characterised by shortage of cash and basic commodities and inflation among other challenges. — 263chat

Reflecting his sentiments on the current economic crisis in the country Kurauone blamed the Emmerson Mnangagwa led government for dismally failing to resolve the impasse due to “lack of wit.”

Lacoste was the muscle. Now we are seeing the effects of the muscle
without the brain,” wrote Kurauone on Facebook.

The Vision of AFANMI whose goal is to find the lost and equip the found, continues under the leadership of the Commissioners.

A full investigation will be conducted and appropriate action taken for the reputational damage to his wife Dr Judith and the wider community of believers especially in Agape. In the current state of affairs, we have a duty of care to offer spiritual, moral and emotional support to the wider member of the church who are affected, Dr Judith and family and also to Dr Walter Masocha

The statement does not specify the sexual misconduct he was engaged in. However, blogger Jean Gasho, who was once a member of the church, and once got Masocha arrested for other cases of sexual misconduct revealed on her blog:

I Mary-Tamar was Jean Gasho, can reveal today on Christmas day 2018 that ‘Prophet’ Walter Masocha has stepped down as leader of Agape For All Nations Ministries International after he allegedly confessed to having sex with his married daughter.

She also revealed that Masocha had sexual relationships with several married women in the church, which he admitted to:

…on 24 December on a quiet evening in Stirling, Scotland, as the Masocha family was getting ready for a jolly Agape Christmas, the wife of the prophet Judith Masocha found herself holding her husband’s phone after an alleged tip-off from her son-in-law that the Bishop had been allegedly having sex with his own married daughter.

…Judith had found a lot more on her husband’s phone, naked pictures of several married women in the church, as well as explicit messages the Bishop sent to his lovers/concubines.

Upon the shocking discoveries, Judith called Walter Masocha’s family, both in Zimbabwe and in the UK.

Shadreck who is a member of Agape church, took it into his own hands to ‘deal’ with Masocha….

Shadreck is reported to have said to his Uncle, “You are a disgrace to our family! We had to put up with you dragging the family name down with Jean’s case, now this again! Step down now!” Shadreck demanded, in front of the whole family.

Lost for words and humiliated, it is reported that after confessing to his grave sins which included incest, Walter Masocha was FORCED to write a resignation letter to the elders of his own Church, stating that he had suffered a ‘moral fall’ of sleeping with countless married women and his own daughter.

The sex scandal is not the first the prophet has been involved in. In January 2014, Masocha was arrested in the UK on allegations of sexually abusing Jean Gasho as well as underage girls. He was convicted by a court but appealed the conviction and was eventually cleared of the charges.

Mugabe Was Cruel But Not Stupid While Current Leaders Are Cruel And Stupid- Dr Ruhanya

Terrence Mawawa|Dr Pedzisai Ruhanya believes Robert Mugabe was a “better devil” than Emmerson Mnangagwa because the former was cruel but not stupid while the latter is “cruel and stupid.”

“Mugabe was cruel but not stupid. The current coup class is both cruel and stupid. Tragically, they are not aware that everything they are doing is  undesirable in Zim,” Dr Ruhanya wrote on twitter.

Mnangagwa was touted as a cult hero following the removal of his mentor, Mugabe from power in 2017, in the wake of the “Kutonga Kwaro” euphoria, has all but been brought back to earth by the biting economic challenges.

“Our Devolution Is Different From Zanu Pf’s”: MDC

By Own Correspondent| MDC senior official Sesil Zvidzai said that his party’s view of devolution is totally different to that of ZANU PF.

Zvidzai, a former Gweru executive mayor and Member of Parliament said this while speaking to a local publication.

He said:

“There is a huge and fundamental difference between Zanu PF’s view of local governance and the MDC’s. Zanu PF believes local government exists at the will of the central government and, therefore, should account to same. They believe in centralisation with a passion.

This is why mayors have been fired left, right and everywhere. This is why local level policy positions have been wantonly trumped upon by [former Local Government ministers Ignatius] Chombo and [his successor [Saviour] Kasukuwere, among others.

This is the reason why local authorities have been suffocated through the closure of resource arteries such as vehicle licence fees and the constitutional 5%.
The MDC believes in the devolution of power to sub-national governments and allowing these to govern out of their own initiative.
We believe these devolved governments should first and foremost account to their electorate.”-Newsday

Police Officers At Crossroads To Arrest Protesting Teachers

Video loading below…

By Own Correspondent| Police details today refused to arrest and charge protesting Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) members.

ARTUZ members who are currently protesting in a demonstration dubbed #SalaryCaravan are demanding the payment of their salaries in US dollars.

This was revealed by one of the protestors while addressing the protestors who are currently camped at Finance minister Mthuli Ncube’s offices.

Said one of the protestors:

“We are in this struggle for US dollars not juat for teachers but for each and every civil servant who is earning RTGs.

We are happy that today junior officers refused to effect a command which was a violation of the Constitution and arrest us for exercising our democratic right to protest.

The junior police details refused to arrest us for close to an hour.”

Ex Soldier Threatens To Storm State House

A former Zimbabwe National army officer, Knowledge Kafuramika (27) has threatened to storm the state house and confront President Emmerson Mnangagwa on the prevailing economic situation.

Describing his move as “bold”, Kafuramika told 263Chat that he believes Mnangagwa has failed the nation and should be held to account.

“We have reached a breaking point. The 2018 elections were supposed to bring hope to our future hence people should not take them lightly. Now after the elections there is no hope and were cannot be sure where the future lie.

— 263chat

Tragedy Strikes Eldorado Mine, As Two Illegal Miners Are Crushed To Death

By Own Correspondent| Two suspected illegal miners died after a rock fell in a shaft at Eldorado Mine in Chinhoyi last weekend, a report by the State Media has revealed.

The incident, which occurred on Saturday night only saw a call for help being made on Sunday.

Sources privy to the developments at the mine said one of the miners was trapped and died underground while the other was rescued but died at Chinhoyi Provincial Hospital due to extensive injuries and excessive bleeding.

There are fears more people could still be trapped underground amid indications that illegal miners continue to use illegal access points into the mine.

“We Are Homesick”: Zimbabweans In The Diaspora

By Own Correspondent| Zimbabweans living in the diaspora owing to years of economic turmoil have called on President Emmerson Mnangagwa to deal with the political and economic crisis bedevilling the country.

Zimbabweans based in neighbouring South Africa who spoke to a local publication said that they are now ‘tired’ of living as second-class citizens.

Said one Grammy Kasindi of Mt Darwin:

“Almost every one in 10 Zimbabweans you see in South Africa is well trained, but they do inferior jobs there because life is hard to back home.

We are homesick, we want to come back home and develop our country. We are bottled in South Africa. We have no social life there.

I wish our President could see this. He may have a change of view. Politicians must do their work and we will come and do ours and build our country.”- Newsday

Gvnt Thanks Doctors Who Have Returned To Work

By Own Correspondent| The government has thanked doctors who have heeded its call and returned to work at the country’s referral hospitals in Harare and Bulawayo.

Junior doctors, from the country’s major public hospitals have been on strike since 1 December 2018.

Others joined the strike later as the government refused to give in to the doctors’ demands.

The government met with doctors’ representatives several times without finding a solution until this Saturday when it was announced that the doctors have called off the strike.

However, no sooner was the ‘deal’ announced that the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association declared that the strike will continue until the government met the doctors demands.

A short statement released on Monday morning by the Ministry of Information and Publicity is not clear if the majority of the doctors have abandoned the strike.

Read the statement:

“Government wishes to thank all the doctors that have gone back to work at Mpilo, United Bulawayo Hospitals(UBH), Harare Central Hospitals and Parirenyatwa.”

Olinda Throws Shade At Stunner’s Wife

Controversial socialite Olinda Chapel has thrown a shade at Stunner’s wife in the latest twist of the back and forth drama between United Kingdom based business woman and her ex-husband Stunner.

The drama is said to have started when Stunner seemingly threw shade at Olinda for her weight after singer EXQ posted a photo carrying his wife on his shoulders.

“Unoziva pane vanoshuvira kuisa vavo pama shoulder like that but it’s never going to happen” Stunner commented. Olinda then allegedly shaded Stunner’s wife after the latter posted a picture which showed that she had gained weight immensely.

“God is a God of balance, if you know you know” Olinda wrote.

However Olinda had to come out and defend herself after many accused her of shading Dyonne.

Firstly that’s not what I was referring to. Secondly I am a grown and mature person and honestly I am in a very happy place and I don’t need to throw shade at another woman to validate myself. I already know my worth.

Thirdly add a combination of puberty, motherhood and genes it’s normal and ok for her to be that size.

Jonathan Moyo Escalates War With Strive Masiyiwa, Threatens To Expose The Tycoon’s Double Dipping

Jane Mlambo| Self-exiled former Higher Education minister and Zanu PF member, Professor Jonathan Moyo has threatened to expose business tycoon and Econet Wireless founder, Strive Masiyiwa’s double standards in funding both Zanu PF and MDC, in what marks a new high in the Twitter war that has been ongoing since last week.

Posting on Twitter yesterday, Professor Moyo said;

“As a former government minister and a former Zanu PF election campaign manager, I’ll tomorrow morning (Monday) do a thread with information exposing Strive Masiyiwa’s two-timer dalliance with Zanu PF and MDC when he purported to be anti ZanuPF and in support of human rights and democracy,” Moyo said.

Masiyiwa has dipped himself into Twitter wars with opposition supporters since his television interview on CNBS in which he remarked that President Emmerson Mnangagwa was sincere in his effort to turn around the country.

Since then, he and his wife have since left Twitter after Zimbabweans launched a vicious against the powerful couple, in a battle that has also sucked Human Rights Watch Africa Director Dewa Mavhinga whom the business magnate sought to have him fired from his job.

Another Military Coup In Gabon As Soldiers Seize Radio Station

Military officers in Gabon have staged a coup attempt, seizing the state radio station and declaring their dissatisfaction with President Ali Bongo, who is recovering from a stroke in Morocco.

A New Year’s Eve address by Bongo “reinforced doubts about the president’s ability to continue to carry out of the responsibilities of his office”, said Lieut Kelly Ondo Obiang, who described himself as an officer in the Republican Guard and leader of the Patriotic Movement of the Defence and Security Forces of Gabon.

In a video circulating on social media, Ondo Obiang is seen in a radio studio wearing military fatigues and a green beret as he reads the statement, which was broadcast at about 4.30am local time (0530 GMT). Two other soldiers with assault rifles stand behind him.

Ondo Obiang said the coup was being carried out “to restore democracy” and to oust “those who, in a cowardly way, assassinated our young compatriots on the night of August 31 2016” – a reference to deadly violence that erupted after Bongo was declared the winner of a disputed election.

A source close to the government said there were gunshots around the national television station, but that the plotters appeared to be a small group of soldiers.

A spokesman for the presidency told Reuters he would make a statement shortly.

Bongo, 59, was hospitalised in October in Saudi Arabia after suffering a stroke. He has been in Morocco since November to continue treatment.

In his New Year’s speech, Bongo acknowledged his health problems but said he was recovering. He slurred some of his words and did not move his right arm, but otherwise appeared in good health.

The Bongo family has ruled the oil-producing country for nearly half a century. Bongo has been president since succeeding his father, Omar, who died in 2009. His re-election in 2016 was marred by claims of fraud and violent protest.

Bongo won re-election in 2016 by fewer than 6,000 votes, sparking deadly clashes between protesters and police during which the parliament was torched.

The European Union said it found anomalies during the election in Bongo’s stronghold province of Haut-Ogooué, where he won 95% of the vote on a 99.9% turnout.

Zesn Petitions Parliament Over Electoral Reforms

By Own Correspondent| The Zimbabwe Election Support Network (Zesn), and 50 other civic society groups have petitioned Parliament to effect electoral reforms ahead of the 2023 general elections.

Zesn urged government to take bold steps to end the country’s history of disputed elections by reforming electoral laws ahead of the forthcoming polls.

Said the Zesn:

“Cognisant of the transition that took place in Zimbabwe in November 2017 ,which sought to break Zimbabwe from its past of autocracy, and usher in democratic reform; concerned at the slow pace of legal reforms in addressing the democratic deficit since the promulgation of the new Constitution in May 2013; alarmed by the administrative lethargy in the Executive arm of the State to address this misalignment of some statutes relevant to electoral processes to the Constitution. … your petitioners appeal for the set up an all-inclusive electoral reform committee to deliberate on political, administrative and other legal reforms that are needed to enhance the credibility of Zimbabwe’s electoral processes”

Signed by over 50 civic society organisations, the petition noted that current laws had loopholes which resulted in electoral disputes that have affected the legitimacy of elections.

Zimbabwe has had a history of contested electoral outcomes; mainly because of a legal framework that does not embrace principles for the discharge of democratic elections.”

Zesn wants President Emmerson Mnangagwa to reform the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (Zec) by removing State security agents from the elections management board, among other proposed changes.

“In particular, your petitioners seek this House to take into account the following issues for the democratic overhaul of Zimbabwe’s Electoral Law and electoral processes , enhancing the independence of Zec and other independent commissions connected to the electoral cycle,” the petition read.

The commission of inquiry into the August 1, 2018 post-election violence, which was chaired by former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe, also recommended changes to the electoral laws.

The commission said reforms, if implemented, would improve the announcement of presidential results, create a traceable and auditable trail of the movement of results from polling stations to the national command centre.-Newsday

“The Listening President Is Not Listening”: Opposition MDC

By Own Correspondent| Opposition MDC has accused President Emmerson Mnangagwa of ignoring calls for talks arguing that the “listening President” is no longer listening.

The party said without dialogue the people of Zimbabwe will have no option but to engage in demonstrations as provided for in the Constitution.

MDC spokesperson, Jacob Mafume said that the issue of Mnangagwa’s legitimacy is at the centre of the crisis and it has to be resolved.

Said Mafume:

“As long as it is not resolved, problems in this country will remain in place. We are able to restore this nation. We have done it before. Our former Minister of Health (Henry Madzorera) has done it well before and he can do it again.

We need to re-engage with the international community on a basis that is rational where we are able to comply with the international norms and standards, where we are able to have foreign direct investments (FDI) and tap into international finance as a way forward and that needs to be done as a matter of urgency.

However, that cannot be done when we are not talking to each other. We have put the dialogue issue out there and our President Nelson Chamisa has talked about it. Our leadership has talked about it yet, there has been no reciprocal desire to dialogue by the current regime.

We feel that Zimbabwe is becoming a regional security threat because of the failure by Mnangagwa’s government to solve the political stalemate over his illegitimacy.

… The economic crisis has the effect of causing a burden to South Africa owing to the exodus of people that are fleeing the worsening economy.

Mnangagwa has refused to listen to our concerns, so we felt it was better for us to meet President Ramaphosa to listen to our concerns and also to relay our message to Mnangagwa.

The people of Zimbabwe continue to suffer and, as a party that was voted for by millions of people, we will do what we can to offer solutions.”

ED and Zanu PF Accused Of Ignoring Opposition Calls For Dialogue As Zim Economy Nears Dead End

The ruling Zanu PF seems unwilling to take heed to calls by the opposition MDC and Nelson Chamisa for talks to absolve the country from total collapse.

MDC spokesman Jacob Mafume confirmed the rebuff at a press conference last Friday, warning that “without dialogue, Zimbabweans would have to resort to the constitution which allows for demonstrations or a collective action that ensures their voices are heard”.

The disputed July 30 elections have been followed by a deepening of the country’s economic meltdown with foreign currency shortages resulting in fuel shortages as well as demands for salaries to be paid in foreign currency by public service workers.

A strike by junior doctors is now in its second month while teachers have also warned that schools may not re-open for the new school term this Tuesday if government does not agree to pay wages in US dollars.

Doctors Say First Lady Only Broke The Ice Not The Strike, The Big Interview

Zimbabwe government hospital doctors have been on strike for the past 36 days, plunging the public health sector into deep crisis, which has led to the near-collapse of the health delivery system. But on Friday, a surprise meeting between the doctors and First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa managed to break the ice for discussion between government and the striking doctors. No deal was, however, brokered and, contrary to post meeting utterances by the first lady, the doctors have not gone back to work.

VIDEOS LOADING BELOW…

Our chief reporter, Everson Mushava (EM) managed to get hold of Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association (ZHDA) secretary general Mthabisi Bhebhe (MB) to get details of the outcome of the doctors’ engagement with the first lady and other issue relating to the strike. Below are excerpts from the interview.

EM: On Friday, your members had a meeting with First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa. What were the issues and what was the result of the meeting?

MB: She was pleading with us to go back to work while government looks into our problems and we felt it was a half-baked offer. She does not hold an official government position and like anyone else, she is just an interested party. We are directly employed by the Ministry of Health and if we have any disgruntlement, we know whom to approach. We cannot approach the President over promises made by the first lady. Yes, she has influence on him, but the proper channel is that she will have to direct our concerns to the Health ministry, which employs us. The Health minister should then take the issues to Cabinet and a decision is made, that is legally binding. The Ministry of Health manages everything about our concerns. It would have made more sense if the promise by the first lady was made by the President himself. Nonetheless, it was a good initiative that such a meeting occurred, but let me reiterate that no agreement was reached and the strike is still going ahead until our demands are met.

EM: One of your demands is to be paid salaries in United States dollars. Has government made a commitment to meet the demand before and what was the outcome?

MB: An agreement was made a long time back in 2014 that government would pay our on-call allowances at a rate of US$10 per hour, but steps to fulfil the agreement were never made. Between 2014 and now, government never talked about it. There was no commitment. Every year, we had an industrial action over the same issue. This year, however, is the longest we have been on strike; so far 36 days and the industrial action is still going on. There is no solution over old promises.

EM: Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga was tasked to resolve the issue. Have you met him in person to negotiate your demands since he was given the task?

MB: The VP never made an effort to meet us. We were negotiating with the Health Services Board. The HSB is our employer. It is responsible for our welfare and work conditions. Every decision regarding our issues is made by the HSB, which presents them to the Ministry of Health. The HSB is playing ground, this is where everything starts and ends and this is provided by the Health Services Act. The HSB is the governing body for all health workers, that is why we say negotiations should be done by the HSB as has been the case. It has the mandate to do so, but the problem has been the way it was handling the negotiations. We believe it was misrepresenting issues to the VP and trying to portray us as devils in this. The HSB has not been negotiating in good faith. We hold the HSB liable and responsible for the delay in resolving this industrial action. They decided to take us to court to force us to return to work without meeting our demands. It made the situation difficult for proper negotiations. We cannot negotiate when the other party is back-stabbing.

EM: Have you alerted the HSB of your reservations on the way it has been handling the issue?

MB: We told them that the way they were handling the issue was delaying rather than solving the problem in the health services. It was out of desperation that the doctors engaged in job action. The doctors had tried their best to have honest engagements with their employer, but the process and outcome were frustrating.

EM: President Emmerson Mnangagwa cut off his annual leave to reportedly attend to the crisis in the health sector. Has he made an effort to meet you?

MB: No, but we have met a lot of representatives from the President’s Office and the latest development was the meeting on Friday with the first lady.

Now there is something on the table, the ice has been broken and now the fighting spirit is no longer there. People want to negotiate. She has pacified the situation. The meeting helped a lot; people are getting to understand our grievances. Like I said before, the only problem is that she is not a government worker and cannot make legally binding decisions, which is the reason why we are still on strike. The first lady has done her part — she should now direct our concerns to our parent ministry to make concessions.

EM: Health minister Obadiah Moyo looked keen to negotiate with you and come up with a solution during the early days of your strike, what happened to his zeal and how are you going along with him?

MB: The minister is good with words and offers, but no tangible solutions. He was only appealing to us to go back to work with nothing, yet the situation in hospitals urgently needs redress. People cannot go back to work by word of mouth. We want concrete measures to bring long-term sanity to the health sector, not piecemeal solutions.

EM: There seems to have been a feeling that Chiwenga was using a hardline stance to negotiate with you. What do you think was the result of such actions?

MB: We were engaging with him through the HSB. We only got to know of his views through his utterances that gave us an impression that he was not interested in negotiations, but force. We thought the mood for negotiation had been abandoned. We felt provoked by his utterances where he described junior doctors as mere students. We believe his utterances were as a result of misrepresentations from the HSB. This is why we were glad when the first lady offered to get our side of the story. We had been demonised without anyone making an effort to understand our concerns.

EM: Right now, government has appealed to student doctors to apply for jobs to fill in the vacancies left behind when it made an undertaking to suspend you. Is such a move legal?

BM: It is not procedural. That is why even the student doctors rejected the offer, a move that forced the first lady to get involved. They invited students who just finished school, whose results are not yet out. The ministry was trying to recruit doctors who have not passed their examinations.

Furthermore, we are all on one page, senior, junior and student doctors. We have similar demands.

Prison Escape Gone Bad As One Prisoner Dies

One prisoner died on the spot and another was seriously injured when three hard-core criminals in transit from Chikurubi Maximum Security Prison to Whawha Prison in Gweru attacked prison warders and jumped off a moving prison truck early yesterday morning.

The third prisoner escaped and a manhunt has since been launched for him.

The three “D-Class” prisoners were being transferred to WhaWha when they attacked and overpowered the two prison wardens escorting them as they approached a tollgate a few kilometres before WhaWha.

Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) national spokesperson Chief Correctional Officer Simon Kawondo confirmed the incident that occurred around 1am along the Mvuma-Gweru highway near Lalapansi.

“We have information to the effect that there were some inmates on their way to WhaWha, who connived and overpowered our officers before jumping off a moving truck resulting in a fatality.

“I don’t have all the facts at the moment since I am not at work but if you can send your questions via email, I will be able to give you full details by tomorrow (Monday).”

Sources close to the incident said the three inmates, considered dangerous criminals, were being relocated to WhaWha when they started beating up the two officers escorting them.

“All this happened without the knowledge of the prison truck driver. The prison officers tried to raise the alarm when they realised that they were being overpowered by the inmates. Unfortunately, the truck’s emergency internal communication sirens were not functional,” said the source.

The source said the driver only got to know of the incident after reducing speed while preparing to stop at the tollgate.

“One of the prison officers, (only identified as) Madzivanzira, who was at the back of the truck managed to disembark at the tollgate and informed the driver that they had been under hell and all the inmates had escaped.

“They then made a U- turn and that is when they discovered that one of the inmates had died on the spot after jumping off the moving truck. His colleague was badly injured and was still lying on the spot,” said the source.

The source said one of the prison officers, an Officer Muroyi, was badly injured during the scuffle with the inmates.

“He is receiving treatment at WhaWha as we speak. These were high- risk inmates and under the law, there were supposed to be two officers per each inmate.

“We don’t know why there were only two officers escorting three very dangerous prisoners,” said the source.

Govt Threatens Land Barons In Mt Hampden

Government has warned people selling land within the new city boundary in Mt Hampden without consulting relevant authorities that they will be arrested.

Lands, Agriculture, Water, Climate and Rural Resettlement Minister Perrance Shiri told journalists yesterday that Government was also concerned that some people were undertaking massive developments within the 18 000 hectares set aside for the new city without permits.

“I am aware and deeply concerned that there are unscrupulous individuals who are currently selling land within the New City boundary without consulting authorities and undertaking massive developments without obtaining permits. To those selling land, may I warn you that it is fraudulent to do such transactions on land earmarked for national interest projects,” Minister Shiri said.

LIVE – Chiwenga Still Burning All Over Body, Appears In Town Early 7am

By A Correspondent|Several days after commissioning a meeting at the Harare’s Parirenyatwa Hospital, Emmerson Mnangagwa’s deputy Constantino Chiwenga was seen early Monday morning having driven into the capital city.

VIDEO LOADING BELOW

The general who in 2017 took on bravery to remove former president Robert Mugabe, was spotted visibly struggling in similar ways as last week when he complained of burning all over his body. Chiwenga was seen shifting from left to right hands all over his body, the second time in 24 hours. Yesterday he attended mass at a holy Catholic church near his house, where he was also seen visibly struggling for temperature comfort. ZimEye could not at the time of writing establish his itinerary today on Monday. Meanwhile the “kupisa” sensation took over social networks by storm with even Chinese people copying it. – More follows…

Love Wins As Auxillia Mnangagwa Hunts For Booed Couple

First Lady Auxillia Mnangagwa yesterday appealed to Zimbabweans to help her locate a couple whose husband became the subject of abuse on social media after he was captured in Harare with a baby strapped on his back and carrying his wife’s handbag.

The wife carried small hand luggage, in a typical reversal of roles.

In the video that went viral a few days ago, the man was subjected to verbal abuse and jeering and some went to the extent of concluding that the wife had administered a love potion to make the man compliant a common belief among Zimbabweans.

In the clip people mocking the man are heard saying, “Mudhara wakadyisa iwe!” (A love potion was administered on you).

The couple was wearing matching red clothes together with their child.

Posting on her Facebook page yesterday, First Lady Mnangagwa said she was touched by the video.

She commended the couple for displaying love and tolerance.

“I was touched by the love displayed in this video and the gesture of responsibility and care demonstrated by this father carrying his baby despite the abuse he received,” she said.

“I am therefore appealing to my fellow Zimbabweans to help me locate this couple. There is surely more we can learn from their tolerance and love. It is through shared responsibility that we can enjoy parenthood and raise a responsible future generation for our country.”

The video comes as people are jostling to assist a Bulawayo couple whose picture also went viral after the man proposed to his sweetheart at a Chicken Inn food outlet.

The move by Makhosana Mguni and Belinda Nyoni ignited a spirit of giving from all corners of the country. Many ridiculed the man for proposing at a food outlet.

Some companies and individuals are offering wedding services to the couple.

Chicken Inn has asked people to suggest what the food outlet can do for the couple and many are of the view that it should pay for the couple’s entire wedding, pay lobola and make them brand ambassadors.

Govt-Teachers Meeting Today Won’t Stop Planned Strike: Union Leaders

Government will today face off with its restive workers in a last-minute ditch to stifle a proposed nationwide civil servants’ strike, but teachers unions yesterday vowed to go ahead with the industrial action as scheduled.

The meeting takes place at a time striking doctors are also meeting to decide their next course of action after government failed to break their month-long industrial action.

This was after government made a few more concessions at the weekend, but representatives of the Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association refused to counter-sign the agreement before consulting their membership.

Teachers have threatened a crippling strike when schools open for the first term tomorrow, demanding to be paid in United States dollars or at least $3 000 local currency, among other demands.

Shaken by the prospect of a looming crippling strike, acting Labour and Social Welfare minister July Moyo on Friday invited all public servants’ unions and four fellow Cabinet ministers to today’s crunch meeting with union leaders.

Besides the Ministry of Labour, ministries of Finance, Primary and Secondary Education, Higher and Tertiary Education and the chairperson of the Public Service Commission will also attend the meeting.

Most teachers’ unions, however, yesterday said they would go ahead with the industrial action with the unions’ umbrella body, the Apex Council, saying the meeting would determine their next course of action.

Apex Council secretary-general David Dzatsunga said the civil servants’ umbrella body would consult its members on the next move after the meeting, adding that they would not stop individual unions from making independent decisions.

“We have agreed that every other action will be premised on today’s meeting with the five principals [ministers] from our employer,” Dzatsunga said.

“The decision to go for a strike comes from the members. Some unions can unilaterally declare a job action if that is what their membership has proposed. That will not necessarily be the position of the Apex Council. The apex body will sit down and make an apex position.”

He said the Apex Council has already advised government that their members may not be able to report for work because they were incapacitated due to the increased cost of living that has eroded their earnings.

The meeting would be first this year after the National Joint Negotiating Council met on December 7 last year, where Apex Council leaders walked out in protest after failing to get satisfactory answers from their employer.

Obert Masaraure, the Amalgamated Rural Teachers’ Union Association of Zimbabwe president said his union would send a representative to the meeting, but that would not stop preparations for tomorrow’s proposed strike.

“The strike will go ahead. Teachers will not attend the preparatory meetings today and will not report to work on Tuesday. The only thing that can stop us from going on strike is a reflection of US$ salaries in our accounts,” Masaraure said.

He accused government of exhibiting a contemptuous attitude when dealing with civil servants.

Zimbabwe Progressive Teachers’ Union president Takavafira Zhou also said the meeting would not stop the job action, but an increment of their salaries would do.

“Our salaries are enough to take us to work for two days. We are deliberating the two days we should report to work and the three we should stay at home. We are very clear about that. The purchasing power parity of our salaries can no longer allow us to do so. We cannot subsidise our employer,” Zhou said.

The largest teachers’ union, the Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (Zimta), at the weekend announced that its members would start their strike action tomorrow, regardless of the outcome of today’s meeting.

Zimta president Richard Gundani said: “Talking won’t capacitate teachers. They need money. The strike is going ahead”

Harare Mayor Outlines Plans For A Better Harare In 2019

Opposition MDC’s Harare mayor Councillor Herbert Gomba says Harare City Council will aim at significantly improving service delivery this year.

Reviewing last year’s performance and outlining plans for 2019, Cllr Gomba said the year 2018 was filled with challenges and opportunities.

“We are grateful because we worked with the Government in developing our structures and on service delivery in 2018,” he said.

“The challenges we faced had to do with access to critical resources for use in our service delivery mandate. This includes shortages of foreign currency to procure critical equipment such as compactors, fuel, chemicals and spare parts.

“Other challenges were to do with reduction in revenue due to problems faced by ratepayers and the Zimra debt which is suffocating council.

“On opportunities, several corporates came forward to assist and create synergies with us. Econet wants to transform First Street into a world class street and NetOne came through with its own proposals and Cassava indicated that it was keen on creating business entities with council.”

He said council implemented its 100-Day Plan under which various infrastructure projects were carried out. These were on roads, libraries and clinics.

“Last year we made our top managers sign performance contracts to ensure they deliver according to those contracts. Going forward, more changes are going to be implemented and this will see many council employees being forced to perform,” Cllr Gomba said.

“We are planning to announce the next phase of 100-Day Plan. We are looking at transforming our human resources into a viable entity that delivers service to our people, that means dealing with numerous cartels formed in traffic police, realign the force into a municipal police that controls and enforces by-laws through retraining.

He said this year, revenue collection will be prioritised.

“We want to create a loose agency which will meet every week to review progress on targets set and the enforcement of the law. We also want to push for an improvement on the payment of bills and this can only be achieved if we deliver quality service to our clients.

“Our focus this year is on service delivery. Therefore, we will not tolerate non-performing workers.

“They will be fired. We will be requesting each division to submit a list of non-performers, such as those who just register their attendance and leave to do personal or union business at the expense of council work.”

PRETORIA 00000418 001.2 OF 003

Classified By: Ambassador Eric M. Bost. Reasons 1.4(b) and (d).

1. (C) SUMMARY. Prominent exiled Zimbabwean businessmen
Trevor Ncube and Strive Masiyiwa agreed that the upcoming
March 29 elections offered opportunities for political change
in Zimbabwe, but differed on the electoral prospects for
independent presidential candidate Simba Makoni. Ncube, a
strong Makoni supporter, claimed that Makoni has generated
significant excitement in Zimbabwe and would do well in the
upcoming poll, whereas Masiyiwa questioned Makoni’s
organizational strength on the ground. Both believed that
Makoni’s candidacy has created sharp divisions in ZANU-PF,
and that Makoni and Tsvangirai may still form a coalition
before the election. Some key ZANU-PF officials who were in
involved in the rigging in previous elections now support
Makoni, potentially making it harder — but not impossible —
for Mugabe to steal the upcoming election. The MDC will
attempt to combat rigging, but has not yet devised a plan for
the “day after” in the event of a Mugabe victory. Masiyiwa
expressed his growing concern about the spiraling inflation,
suggesting that there may be “no more room” for the economy
to collapse. END SUMMARY.

2. (C) Visiting DAS Carol Thompson, AF/S Office Director, and
PolOff met February 27 with prominent and influential
Zimbabwean exile businessmen Strive Masiyiwa and Trevor
Ncube. Harare Ambassador McGee joined the meeting with
Masiyiwa. Ncube is publisher of the respected South African
weekly newspaper the Mail & Guardian, as well as the
Zimbabwean newspapers The Sunday Standard and The Zimbabwean
Independent. Masiyiwa is founder and CEO of Econet Wireless
Group, a global telecommunications company with operations in
Zimbabwe and 14 other countries.

——————————
Prospects for Makoni Candidacy
——————————

3. (C) A long-time advocate of a “third way” in Zimbabwe (ref
A), Trevor Ncube expressed his enthusiastic support for the
presidential candidacy of Simba Makoni (ref B). (NOTE: Ncube
appears to be deeply involved in the Makoni campaign, and
even received a phone call from Makoni during the meeting.
END NOTE.) Makoni has generated “tremendous excitement” on
the ground in Zimbabwe, Ncube claimed, leading to an upsurge
in voter registration. Makoni’s biggest enemies are time and
resources. Ncube said that the diaspora is helping to fund
Makoni’s campaign through a Johannesburg trust fund (Ncube
offered to provide the account number to the USG for
contributions, an offer we did not follow up on). Ncube
suggested that Makoni is making inroads in Mashonaland East,
where former General Solomon Mujuru has broad support, in
Harare, and in Matabeleland, both urban and rural areas.
This support would spread into other areas, Ncube believes.

4. (C) DAS Thompson stressed to Ncube that the United States
does not support particular political parties in Zimbabwe,
despite rumors that the USG backs the opposition MDC.
Instead, the United States wants to see leaders with vision,
who can create political and economic change in Zimbabwe and
a better life for the Zimbabwean people. Ncube said he
appreciated the message and would pass it to Makoni. Ncube
Qappreciated the message and would pass it to Makoni. Ncube
noted that any association between Makoni and the U.S. or
U.K. would be the “political kiss of death,” so urged the USG
to speak carefully when commenting on the campaign.

5. (C) Strive Masiyiwa was much more cautious about the
Makoni candidacy, questioning whether Makoni has support on
the ground. He noted that Makoni does not have any “foot
soldiers” to campaign for him, and thus limited ability to
communicate with the man on the street, many of whom are
deeply suspicious of Makoni due to his long association with
President Mugabe and ZANU-PF. Both Masiyiwa and Ncube agreed
that Makoni’s candidacy has divided ZANU-PF, including the
security structures. While no one knows the exact extent of
the division, Ncube said it is “extensive.” This division
has created tension, distrust, and even paranoia within
ZANU-PF.

—————————
Complicated Ties to Mujurus
—————————

6. (C) Ncube and Masiyiwa provided differing accounts of the
relationship between Makoni and ZANU-PF heavyweight retired
General Solomon Mujuru. Ncube claimed that Makoni decided to
run for president without Mujuru’s blessing. Now that Makoni
is “gathering momentum,” Mujuru has begun quietly supporting
him, but many core Makoni supporters resent Mujuru’s late
conversion. Mujuru is a controversial figure in ZANU-PF and
could even become a negative factor in the Makoni campaign.

7. (C) Masiyiwa, on the other hand, said that Mujuru and
former Home Affairs Minister Dumisa Dabengwa created the
“Makoni project” as a means to get rid of Mugabe. Dabengwa
will publicly endorse Makoni in the coming days, which will
be “symbolically powerful” and will bring the former ZAPU
leadership firmly behind Makoni. Masiyiwa helped organize a
meeting in Johannesburg between Dabengwa and MDC leader
Morgan Tsvangirai (ref C), a potentially important bridge
between Makoni and the MDC. According to Masiyiwa, Mujuru
will never publicly back Makoni. Mujuru is essentially a
“mafia boss,” and Mugabe could simply threaten to arrest
Mujuru if he got out of line. Masiyiwa also questioned the
conventional wisdom that Mujuru controls much of the
military, noting that Mujuru has been out of uniform for some
16 years and may not have as much influence as experts
believe.

—————————————
Alliance between Tsvangirai and Makoni?
—————————————

8. (C) Both Ncube and Masiyiwa believed it was still possible
for Simba Makoni and Morgan Tsvangirai to form an alliance
before the presidential elections on March 29 — or perhaps
for a second round of elections if no one candidate receives
50 percent plus of the vote (a prospect both Ncube and
Masiyiwa thought likely). Ncube, a harsh Tsvangirai critic,
argued that the MDC-Tsvangirai has been “seriously weakened”
by its failure to reunite with the MDC-Mutambara faction, and
that Tsvangirai has no more than 20 percent support in the
country. Tsvangirai is under significant pressure, even
“rebellion,” from within his own party. Masiyiwa said that
both Makoni and Tsvangirai are still sizing up their support,
but at the appropriate time in the next couple weeks, he
expected — and would in fact help ensure — that the two
would meet and discuss forming a coalition. Masiyiwa floated
the idea of Makoni serving as Prime Minister and head of
government, while Tsvangirai would become president and head
of state.

—————-
Rigged Election?
—————-

9. (C) Asked about the possibility that Mugabe would rig the
election to ensure he received 51 percent of the vote, Ncube
and Masiyiwa noted that the “people who did the rigging last
time” are now divided between Mugabe and Makoni (Masiyiwa
even joked that one CIO contact expressed concern that Makoni
could steal the election from Mugabe!). Ncube said you
cannot rule out the impact of fear and intimidation from
Mugabe’s thugs, but that there were “competing forces at
work.” Blatant rigging might not be accepted by the young
people, Ncube observed, noting that many youth were
frustrated when they were unable to register to vote.
Qfrustrated when they were unable to register to vote.
Masiyiwa is helping the MDC set up an “anti-rigging unit”
that hopefully will help reduce the amount of electoral theft.

10. (C) The MDC does not have a clear plan for the “day
after” the election, Masiyiwa said. The party is beginning
to hold those discussions, but remains committed to
non-violence. Tsvangirai is concerned that post-electoral
protests could spin out of control. Masiyiwa has recommended
to the MDC that they view the election as part of the process
of de-legitimizing Mugabe — shrinking his international
support base to a couple countries in the region like Namibia
and Angola. Masiyiwa wants as many regional observers and
journalists as possible in Zimbabwe to witness the election.
He and others are urging the South African Communist Party
(SACP) and trade union federation COSATU — both sympathetic

PRETORIA 00000418 003.2 OF 003

to the MDC — to send observers through the ANC and South
African Government delegations.

—————
Economic Crisis
—————

11. (C) Concluding, Masiyiwa expressed concern about
spiraling inflation and economic meltdown in Zimbabwe.
Mugabe is continuing to print and spend money in advance of
the election, creating a “roaring monster.” “We have talked
about the economy” for a long time, Masiyiwa said, but this
time there “may be no more room” for collapse.

——-
Comment
——-

12. (C) Simba Makoni’s presidential bid has created
excitement among the well-educated Zimbabwean diaspora in
South Africa. Many, like Trevor Ncube, are supporting Makoni
and are likely contributing resources to his campaign. A
significant number of the elite and successful Zimbabweans
dismiss Morgan Tsvangirai as ineffective, uneducated and
incapable of ruling Zimbabwe, and see Makoni as the best hope
for change in Zimbabwe. Others, like Strive Masiyiwa,
continue to back the MDC and Tsvangirai, and Tsvangirai
retains strong support among the working class and poor
Zimbabwean exiles in South Africa. We expect few Zimbabweans
living in South Africa, estimated between one to three
million, will return to Zimbabwe to vote in the March 29
elections, although their financial resources, international
connections, and ties to family members may make them an
influential factor in Zimbabwean politics.

Teachers Issue Ultimatum, No Schooling Tomorrow.

PRESENTATIVES of teachers’ unions across the board have made their positions known ahead of a crucial meeting today with government: schools will only open if the demand for salaries in US dollars is met.

Schools are opening tomorrow, and teachers are demanding a salary of $3,000 local currency, or equivalent in US dollars at the parallel market rate, among other demands.

They claim that the economic downturn has eroded their salaries so much that they are incapacitated to return to their workstations.

In a last-ditch effort to stem the crisis, government has called for a meeting today with representatives of the teachers’ unions.

Has Strive Masiyiwa Lost Respect Because Of His Wife? ● OPINION

By Walter Mukuyu| OPINION| The person who started this war is Strive Masiiwa’s wife by talking nonsense on Twitter now the husband has taken over so as to defend the stupidity of his wife.
Now Strive has lost respect because his wife. Strive is now following the footsteps of Mugabe of being destroyed by own wife after having built a good reputation in years.

By Farai D Hove| The Executive Director Of Human Rights Watch, Kenneth Roth last week responded to Masiyiwa’s allegations that the NGO’s Zimbabwe leader Dewa Mavinga bullied his (Masiyiwa’s) wife, Tsitsi.

Roth took a sharp swipe at Masiyiwa appearing to say his Facebook screamer was a “cheap shot.”

Writing on Wednesday afternoon, Roth said, “Defenders of Zimbabwe Pres Mnangagwa don’t want to hear criticism of his government’s persistent repression so they pretend all critics are foreign sponsored.

“A cheap shot. Why not address the reality? ”

45 Degree Soldier Likely Re-Deployed And Now Working Inside London Embassy As A Defence Attache’

By Lesley Ncube| The cruel soldiers caught on camera shooting at fleeing civilians on the 1st August were likely promoted and are now working at the country’s foreign embassies.

A source inside the military told this reporter, “it is the norm for the military to be sent to work in embassies as defence attache’s.”

They would however not speak directly concerning the whereabouts of the 1 August soldiers.

If their statement holds true, the practice of deployment would be similar to other nations. At one  time in London, a Libyan embassy official shot and killed a British policewoman, PC Yvonne Fletcher.

The Guardian newspaper identified a man later arrested as Dr Saleh Ibrahim Mabrouk, a former minister in the late president Muammar Gaddafi’s government and a high-ranking member of the team tasked by the regime with suppressing opposition.

PC Fletcher, who was 25, was hit in the back by automatic gunfire from the direction of the Libyan embassy on the morning of 17 April 1984. Libyan exiles in the UK, some of whom were also injured, had been protesting against the Gaddafi regime. Fletcher died later that day at Westminster hospital. Her fiance, Michael Liddle, who was also a police officer, was at her side.

The murder led to a 10-day police siege of the embassy and the severing of diplomatic relations with the Libyan regime, as well as the deportation of 30 of the people who were inside the building.

The brutal military operations of the 1st August were pre-planned more than 8 months before and a ZBC full broadcast shows Emmerson Mnangagwa smiling as his most senior office worker on the 15th December 2017 announced that ZANU PF will deploy the military in order to change the election results.

Meanwhile the below twitter user has begun a search for the soldier in the below picture caught on camera in a kneeling position:
