Reporters Without Borders Statement As Hopewell Chin’ono’s Is Granted Bail
Prominent Heart Specialist Physician Succumbs To Covid-19

By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe’s prominent and foremost heart specialist physician Professor James Gita Hakim has died from Covid 19 related complications.
He was a professor of medicine and past chair of the UZ Medical School.
As reports of his death filtered yesterday, there was outpouring of grief as the medical fraternity paid tribute to Dr Hakim.
Mr Samkange, veteran surgeon and director of the UZ Institute of Continuing Health Education (ICHE) described Dr Hakim’s death as a huge blow to the country.
“Today we lost Professor James Gita Hakim. Professor Hakim was an exceptional Physician. He was an exceptional medical doctor, fantastic diagnostician and easily caring for his patients deeply but never hesitating to ask if we could not do better. He was a committed teacher, never thinking that one could do too much for the students; a mentor whose commitment to the development of the trainees will take some passing. He was a natural researcher: unique in that he wanted every colleague to reach their full potential.
He wrote so many papers, was respected and cherished in the region, the continent and the world over. He founded organisations and institutions that developed Medicine, our country and our continent. Though he had to leave his native Sudan at a young age, he never forgot it in his works AND he did a lot more for Zimbabwe than some of us. He will be remembered as a giant, so humble, so towering and yet so down to earth and shattering relevant.
He has left a void thst will be so difficult to feel. Our heartfelt gratitude to his family for sharing him with us; we pray that they are comforted in this very arduous time.”
Said Dr Norman Matara:
“We have lost a great professor of medicine, a teacher, researcher, and above all a humble and good person.
“This is a huge loss for the nation. Go well professor, your contribution to science and medicine will forever be invaluable – broken heart.”
Dr Hakim studied medicine at the University of Makerere in Uganda and specialised in internal medicine in Kenya, UK, Germany, Australia and South Africa.-statemedia

Nakamba Linked With Move To Spanish Giants Valencia
Marvelous Nakamba has been linked with another surprise transfer from Aston Villa in the current transfer window.
The Zimbabwean has in the past months been a target of Galatasaray and now, Spanish side Valencia has also expressed interest in the midfielder.
According to El Mercantil Valenciano via Sport Witness, the La Liga strugglers will turn their attention to Nakamba if they fail to sign Lucas Torreira.
Torreira is on loan at Atletico Madrid from Arsenal but has found game time hard to come. He has featured in just nine league matches, starting two and with one goal to his name.
The same has also been happening to Nakamba who only have two league starts at Villa this season.
However, his performance in Villa’s 2-0 over Newcastle United could mean a move away is highly unlikely despite the impending arrival of Morgan Sanson from Olympique Marseille, who is replacing Conor Hourihane who joined Swansea City on loan.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

COVID-19 And Mental Health
First published in 2020
Joint release by the World Health Organization, United for Global Mental Health and the World Federation for Mental Health
Mental health is one of the most neglected areas of public health.
Close to 1 billion people are living with a mental disorder, 3 million people die every year from the harmful use of alcohol and one person dies every 40 seconds by suicide. And now, billions of people around the world have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, which is having a further impact on people’s mental health.
Yet, relatively few people around the world have access to quality mental health services. In low- and middle-income countries, more than 75% of people with mental, neurological and substance use disorders receive no treatment for their condition at all. Furthermore, stigma, discrimination, punitive legislation and human rights abuses are still widespread.
The limited access to quality, affordable mental health care in the world before the pandemic, and particularly in humanitarian emergencies and conflict settings, has been further diminished due to COVID-19 as the pandemic has disrupted health services around the world.
Primary causes have been infection and the risk of infection in long-stay facilities such as care homes and psychiatric institutions; barriers to meeting people face-to-face; mental health staff being infected with the virus; and the closing of mental health facilities to convert them into care facilities for people with COVID-19.
Move for mental health: let’s invest
That’s why, for this year’s(2020) World Mental Health Day, WHO, together with partner organizations, United for Global Mental Health and the World Federation for Mental Health, is calling for a massive scale-up in investment in mental health.
To encourage public action around the world, a World Mental Health Day campaign, Move for mental health: let’s invest will kick off in September.
“World Mental Health Day is an opportunity for the world to come together and begin redressing the historic neglect of mental health,” said Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization.
“We are already seeing the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic on people’s mental well-being, and this is just the beginning. Unless we make serious commitments to scale up investment in mental health right now, the health, social and economic consequences will be far-reaching.”
During the past few months, the World Health Organization has issued, in collaboration with partners, guidance and advice on mental health for health workers and other frontline workers, managers of health facilities, and people of all ages whose lives have changed considerably as a result of the pandemic.
With the disruption in health services, countries are finding innovative ways to provide mental health care, and initiatives to strengthen psychosocial support have sprung up. Yet, because of the scale of the problem, the vast majority of mental health needs remain unaddressed.
The response is hampered by chronic under-investment in mental health promotion, prevention and care for many years before the pandemic.
Countries spend just 2% of their health budgets on mental health
Countries spend on average only 2% of their health budgets on mental health.
Despite some increases in recent years, international development assistance for mental health has never exceeded 1% of all development assistance for health.
This is despite the fact that for every US$ 1 invested in scaled-up treatment for common mental disorders such as depression and anxiety, there is a return of US$ 5 in improved health and productivity.

110 Inmates At Mutimurefu Prison Test Positive For Coronavirus
MASVINGO – An alarming number of inmates have tested positive to Covid19 at Mutimurefu, one of the largest prisons in the country.
Sources told The Mirror that of the 150 prisoners tested so far, 110 are positive. The prisoners are being tested in batches of 75.
It is understood that 53 inmates tested positive on Wednesday last week while 57 tested positive three days ago (Sunday).
Provincial Covid-19 taskforce spokesperson Rodgers Irimayi confirmed the Wednesday figure and said that he was yet to get the Sunday figure.

Temba Mliswa, Tafadzwa Mugwadi In Nasty Twitter War
Norton legislator Temba Mliswa and Zanu PF Director of Information Tafadzwa Mugwadi are currently engaged in a Twitter war over their allegiance to Emmerson Mnangagwa with Mliswa accusing the former ZINASU leader of working against the party.
Mliswa started the war when he commented on Mugwadi’s attack on opposition MDC Alliance vice President Tendai Biti over his comments on COVID-19 killing Zanu PF chefs, urging the young politician to be calculative on when to speak or not
It’s tragic to find a young man, whom I have previously defended in the ANC fiasco, doubling down fomenting baseless claims. These are instances where as a politician @TafadzwaMugwadi should know when to speak and when to be quiet. Mbanje ngadziite shoma.
This did not go down well with Mugwadi who hit back saying he never solicited for Mliswa’s defence when he was under attack over comments he made against the South African African National Congress (ANC).
“I have no trajedy of belonging. I have never solicited for defence frm anybody. You have done well to win as an independent by playing 2 political parties one against the other & when it is convenient, u claim to be supporting the other. In this case u want to recover sympathies,” said Mugwadi.
Mliswa then followed up with a thread of posts attacking Mugwadi whom he said was an opposition plant in the ruling, while sharing a message about the Zanu PF Information director’s arrest during his day when he was the Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU) president.
Any politician of repute& sense should have that intelligence to know when to speak and when not to, so as to avoid finding themselves on the wrong side of history, logic and progress.
These are some of the things which we have said reveal how this current crop& creature isn’t the @ZANUPF_Official that we know. It is infested with people whom we know are very much against @edmnangagwa and in due time we shall be naming and shaming.
Some of us worked for the assumption of power by ED&have the inside knowledge of the true status of many who are now faking to be his allies. This current @ZANUPF_Official is an alien creature far removed from the real party we know and it showed its colours by kicking ED out.
It is the War Veterans who mobilised and worked to have him come back. The rest in that party are just opportunists out for self-aggrandisement but very much against the leadership and administration of @edmnangagwa.

Govt Dismisses School Vaccine Talk
Schools will not open on February 15 to administer compulsory Covid-19 vaccine injections as claimed by fake and mischievous messages circulating on social media, the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has said.
The re-opening of schools was postponed indefinitely following a surge in Covid-19 infections after an influx of returning residents, which also led to the resumption of the level four lockdown at the beginning of the month.
In a statement yesterday, the Ministry said schools remained closed as preparations for their safe re-opening and the accelerated implementation of teaching and learning activities continued.
The school calendar will be announced in due course. Dismissing rumours circulating on social media, the Ministry said: “It has come to the attention of the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education that a fake social media report claiming that Government will open schools on 15 February 2021 in order to administer non-voluntary Covid-19 vaccine injections on learners and teachers is circulating.” – Herald
Attempts To Block SB Moyo’s Kids From Attending Own Father’s Burial…
By A Correspondent | An attempt to block the late Foreign Affairs Minister SB Moyo’s children from his first wife from attending the coup general’s burial on Wednesday has been unmasked.
ZimEye can reveal Justice Loice Matanda-Moyo’s family have been in frantic efforts of block his UK based kids from burying their father, under the claim that the number of attendants is capped at 20.
SB Moyo has at least 5 kids (including the two from Justice Loice Matanda Moyo).

The development comes as there is an ongoing debate on how many children SB Moyo has. His oldest son who is UK based, Bernard was born in 1984. He is 34.
Of that marriage he also has Catherine, who was born in 1987.
SB Moyo first got married in 1983 when he was 21, and the wife was 19.
ZimEye checked with the Zimbabwe embassy at London and found out at least three of SB Moyo’s Kids had applied for clearance to fly to Zimbabwe. It could not be established at the time of writing if they are all travelling. The embassy however gave permission to every one of them to fly to Zimbabwe so that they land in time for the burial on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, SB Moyo’s daughter from his first marriage, Catherine was told that the number of attendants scheduled for the hero’s burial has gone over the 20 marker so her flight into the country would be wasted, a family source close to the Matanda-Moyo’s disclosed to ZimEye.
Last week Emmerson Mnangagwa hosted a large crowd of more than a hundred moaners at the heroes acre as the late Manicaland Minister Ellen Gwaradzimba was laid to rest.
SB Moyo was one of the first officers to be reintegrated into the combined army comprising the Rhodesian, the ZIPRA and ZANLA groupings. He was from ZIPRA. At that time the two got married in 1983 and moved on to live in Greendale, Harare. They later divorced in 1992 and went their separate ways.
SB Moyo then moved on get married to Justice Loice Matanda Moyo with whom he sired two more children.
Aside the relationship with Loice, there is a side report suggesting Moyo has raised another child (a girl seen in the picture above).
Efforts to get a comment from Justice Matanda-Moyo were fruitless at the time of writing as she was still in isolation after contracting COVID-19.

COVID-19 Daily Update

15 Arrested At Birthday Bash
FIFTEEN people who were part of more than 100 people who attended a suspected gold dealer’s birthday party on Sunday in violation of lockdown rules at a house in Nkulumane suburb where police officers were attacked, have been arrested.
The suspected gold dealer, Ntombizodwa Ndlovu who was celebrating her 36th birthday, is among those who were arrested.
Police have identified 15 others who are on the run.
Police swooped on party goers at around 5.30PM and the merry-makers attacked them forcing them to retreat.
The police later called for reinforcement leading to the arrest of the 15 who include Ndlovu and her husband.
Confirming the incident, Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson inspector Abednico Ncube said more than 100 people attended the party in violation of the strict Covid-19 regulations announced by Government early this month.
He said when police officers got to the scene, the suspects became violent and attacked them.
“On 24 January 2021 at around 5.40PM, police received an anonymous tip off to the effect that there was an unsanctioned party in Nkulumane at a certain house owned by Ntombizodwa Ndlovu, a female adult aged 36 thereby violating the Covid-19 regulations,” said Insp Ncube.
He said when police arrived, they realised that the gate was locked and they decided to knock and asked to see the house owner.
A house in Nkulumane suburb, Bulawayo where a party was hosted
The request by the police resulted in the accused persons becoming violent.
“The accused persons teamed up from inside and forcibly pushed the gate and attacked the police officers while some of them escaped. Police officers managed to lock the gate using handcuffs and called for a backup” said Insp Ncube.
The backup team arrived and managed to arrest 15 accused persons.
Police said the following people are still at large: Rosemary Mpala (31), Rhoda Ndlovu (59) both of Nkulumane suburb; Babra Kamanga (34) of Cowdray Park another woman also named Ntombizodwa Ndlovu (28) of Nkulumane, Brady Tshuma (29) of Nkulumane, Zanele Makiwa (30) of Lobengula West, Doubt Dube (38) of Lobengula, Gazi Tinashe (34) of Lobengula, Tshabangu Artwell Nqobile (41) of Nkulumane, Knowledge Mpumelelo Mhlanga (34) of Nkulumane, Ndlovu Nkosikhona (34) of Nkulumane, Dube Courage of Nkulumane, Eric Khumalo and Tracy Candy Nyathi both of Nketa and Brendon Sebata (32) of Khumalo suburb.
At the crime scene, police recovered a big PA system comprising of four big speakers, one big blue tent and white décor material, four amplifiers, 11 empty crates of beer and two big dishes.
“The arrested accused persons were taken to ZRP Nkulumane where they are detained,” Insp Ncube said.
He bemoaned the behaviour of people at a time when people are succumbing to Covid-19.
“It is disheartening that at a time when the nation is grappling to contain the pandemic, some members of the public decide to be reckless by hosting such parties. Covid-19 has killed a lot of our loved ones and we as the police will not stop at anything to bring to book those bent on negligently defying Government directives thereby spreading the virus,” he said.- Chronicle

Nick Mangwana and the Medical Assassins, Did He Mean Harm? | OPINION

By Dr Masimba Mavaza | The past few days social media was awash with the news of the Permanent Secretary of Information Ndabaningi Mangwana’s statement on Medical assassins. Many sought to accuse Nick for alleging that there are some medical assassins in our midst. A medical assassin is a doctor who kills his patients by either mis-prescribing or over-prescribing medicine or treatment or by wilful neglect or refusing or pretending to be giving medication. A doctor, known more precisely as a physician, is a health care provider who practices the field of medicine.
Doctors reacted with fury over comments by Ndabaningi Mangwana, who appeared to suggest that doctors hostile to President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime are killing government officials admitted at Zimbabwe’s hospitals. This came after four cabinet ministers and dozens of other government officials have died as the coronavirus threatens to overwhelm Zimbabwe’s health sector. The anger generated by the statement is surprising. These were comments made on Twitter which suggest that Mangwana claimed there were “medical assassins” working in the health sector. The doctors alleged that there was no evidence other than citing “an unfortunate conspiracy theory.”
The Senior Hospital Doctors Association called Mangwana’s claims “regrettable” and the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights warned that “the continuous persecution of medical practitioners is likely to destabilise the health sector.”
A lot of fury and anger was flown all over with the detractors trying to turn the social media comment into a political spat.
Mangwana showed his utmost maturity by apologising to the doctors and anyone who might have been offended. We do applaud the statesman character exhibited by comrade Nick Mangwana.
Cde Mangwana has never doubted the extraordinary work being done by the medical and health staff during this pandemic. He himself has been a health care worker and understands fully well the challenges faced by these multitudes of medical and health workers. Nick Mangwana in another meeting was quoted as saying about the health workers,
“We truly have but the struggle continues. Luminaries going at the behest of the invisible enemy”
In another recording cde Mangwana commented on doctors and nurses,
“Their caring touch deserves our utmost respect, but the truth is under these COVID circumstances they need the support of each and everyone of us”
This shows a man who has a deep entranced understanding of the needs of Doctors and nurses. He is a man who will never trivialise the work of these heroes who are exposing themselves to COVID for the country to be served.
On the same breath we must understand that the deceased government officials were friends to Nick Mangwana and some of them he had met and spoke to them few days before they got sick. It is therefore common that in such a situation of grief questions like why? are being asked. Despite his office Nick is a human being. He has feelings. Behind this tough talking ever smiling man there is a person. So Nick was overwhelmed by a comment suggesting that there are doctors who are practicing politics in their medical practice. This is not far fetched at all.
Doctors should not claim to be angels. Zimbabwe had seen medical witches before. We once had a doctor McGowan who experimented on people. We had several doctors in Zimbabwe who have been arrested of are on the run after some malpractice which borders on witchcraft. The fact that aspersions have been cast towards the doctors domain does not mean doctors are being accused.
Without taking away Mangwana’s apology it must be noted that Mangwana did not accuse doctors but acknowledged that he is aware that there are allegations of such malpractices. This came after a doctor twitted that his colleagues are refusing to treat people who support ZANU PF.
We are not blind to the fact that some doctors show their political inclinations during their industrial actions. All this comes to play when one of their own Tweets a warning of malpractice.
For the doctors to turn around and play victim in a social media case is regrettable and unfortunate. Doctors should stop hunting for an elephant in a small hut.
While our doctors have worked so hard in very difficult conditions they must not act as untouchables. When a finger points at them they must just state facts deny the facts and put the the facts straight.
To create a mountain out of a anthill is wrong and unfair. There is no doubt that our doctors deserve better and Nick is an advocate for that.
It’s not just a fair deal for our nurses, it’s much better for patients too.
The simple truth is tired, overworked staff cannot be expected to provide the high quality of care we want our loved ones to receive. But this does not justify a political discrimination by doctors and nurses.
Nick Mangwana has confirmed the importance of nursing in our society as it promotes health, healing and development and prevention of disease illness, injuries and disability. Nick also advocates that when people are sick the purpose of nursing is to reduce the level of distress and suffering and allow the patients to understand their disease processes as well as coping mechanism, treatment and implications. Nick as a person knows that doctors and nurse provide compassionate care to all patients despite their nationalities, religion, gender, age, disability and other factors that may influence their health outcomes. It’s his personal belief that all human beings should be treated equally with care and integrity.
When Nick Twitted in his personal capacity He hoped doctors and nurses to develop a caring attitude and to find the importance of being appreciated by the patients when they have helped them through their illness hence in transition they will provide a safe and competent care that not only satisfy clients need but also their families. To ensure their well-being by following Zimbabwean council guidelines that obligate them to provide safe and competent care.
In providing competent care, they will employ empirical knowing known as scientific knowledge. This knowledge is gained through research based on scientific methods and rational, deductive thinking not political correctness. The doctors and nurses must use this knowledge when assessing patients’ vital signs which are based on scientific facts. They must not assess patients using their political inclinations. Our hope and prayers are that doctors strive to use the scientific knowledge and information available in gaining the requisite factual knowledge. Not to use the Twitter to react to gossip. This means continuous consultation with their colleagues and learning what causes disease and first hand care that should be given. This knowledge is attainable both theoretically and also through clinical practice.
This is what Nick stands for and poking the doctors on assassin mentality is merely to say to them in case.
We are aware that Covid needs more scientific research and Knowlledge. This scientific knowledge is also acquired from other external sources that can be tested and verified empirically. The solutions recommended for a particular case can be proved quantitatively using known scientific methods.
The knowledge is acquired not by picking fights over comments elsewhere but by the personal understanding of various concepts applicable in the medical process.
Instead of concentrating on unsubstantiated and unofficial comments not officially directed to you doctors must be able to empathize with patients through understanding better the concept of human being.
Furthermore doctors must understand grief. This is because in their profession there is continuous interaction with people all the time. There are various aspects that make up a human being. These include the psychological, social, spiritual and physical aspects. So doctors must not react to that social aspect and mourn like they are perfect.
Anyone who misunderstood Nick’s comments must be able to place self in Nick’s shoes and understand his feelings more. Instead of using a hammer over Nicks heart you should offer moral support while at the same time protecting the rights and freedoms of the patients.
Doctors must ensure high quality standards in their practice. This is through understanding of self, colleagues, community and health consumers’ responsibilities and expectations in the profession. They must not be on the edge and waiting to pushed over by journalists who seek to make news by setting the doctors against Mangwana.
Our doctors must learn and appreciate the ethical parameters that apply to the profession. These will mainly be gained from the environment and the surroundings. They will make them informed of the moral choices they should make when confronted with various situations in the workplace and journalistic gossip. In this regard we should strive to know the environment of the patient which relates to the nature of health care that has been at their disposal without being edgy. This will have a tremendous effect on the kind of doctors we will have under pressure. A doctor must therefore develop the necessary practical skills that will act as a guide in identifying the predetermining factors in caring for a patient and be able to spit out gossip.
The other way of knowing is to understand the aesthetic value of the patient without mixing with gossip. As a doctor One will be in a position to perceive the needs of a patient at first sight. This is the current situation that faces the patient and the individual circumstances that are unique to him. This will guide the practical actions that need to initiated and implemented to ensure the patient is attended to promptly and in time without asking for his status in life.
The socio political dynamics that face the health care profession must be known by the healthcare professionals and we have no doubt our doctors knows this. Together doctors and everyone should strive to identify the current trend in the socio-political arena so that we can be equipped with relevant information affecting health care in this pandemic. This will improve our knowledge of understanding the patients better and recognizing their other needs such as psychological and social needs.
Doctors must identify other underlying conditions besides the main complaint that brought the patient to hospital. This includes knowing other predetermining factors such as social origin which may determine the conditions that the patient is predisposed to. But it must not be a basis of discriminating patients based on their political beliefs.
All these ways of knowing must be applied together in order to achieve the holistic aims of the profession. This is due to the fact that medicine is not just a science but it is also an art and a way of life.
It encompasses several processes such as learning, leadership and decision making. This is also in recognition that there is great mingling of cultures in the health profession. These cultures and attitudes must be understood in order to offer valuable service to clients.
Doctors are not politicians they have chosen the profession because they have a passion for caring for patients. This implies that they must be prepared to be accountable for all their actions during the performance of assigned duties. They must be accountable to themselves the patient, the employer, the public at large and also to the profession The entire society places a lot of trust on them and they must accept it when they are questioned. It is therefore imperative to ensure that they are fully equipped with all the necessary skills so as not to betray this trust. In the exercise of the accountability role, they will exercise their responsibility and authority roles as designated. They will also make sure that they continuously engage in research and development activities. This will make them aligned to latest trends in the profession. It will ensure efficiency and compliance on their part.
They must also engage in professional evaluation. This means that their capabilities will be subject to review from competent personnel in the industry and public at large. They will be able to get constructive responses and feedback from colleagues especially those with more experience. This will enable them know which areas they should focus on to effect personal development. They must not focus on social media.
They must also engage in collegiality. This will make them contribute to the professional career development of colleagues and other health care professionals. This will cultivate the culture of sharing knowledge and skills with colleagues in the profession not sharing Tweets which do not advance their cause. Doctors must also maintain ethics in all their actions both inside and outside the hospital. This ensures that their profession is not in disrepute due to their actions. It will ensure patient-nurse relationship through dignity and preservation of patient autonomy. It is also evident through maintenance of patient confidentiality to avoid any legal and regulatory consequences.
As much as Nick apologised the doctors must work without casting dark clouds in the way they are dealing with political patients.
Covid respects no persons no political party nor any social status.
We must all support our medical and health staff. We must not let gossip divide us.
Nick Mangwana may be a non-saint but a non-villain.

We Must Stand Together, A United People” – This Is Insane, Phoney 1987 Unity Is Still Excuse For Bad Governance
By Nomusa Garikai- It was Albert Einstein, one of the world’s greatest intellectuals and physicist, who said “insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result!”
Cursed is the nation that should ever find itself with the insane in positions of power and authority; forever coerced to do the same things over and over again expecting different results. Zimbabwe is one such cursed nation!
”The pandemic has been indiscriminate in its grim harvest. Zimbabweans from all walks of life, all stations, all tribes, all races and religions have succumbed to it,” said President Emmerson Mnangagwa.
“Today we are united in grief and facing this. There are no spectators, adjudicators, no holier than thou nor supermen or superwomen. We are all exposed and we are all potential victims. We are all affected one way or the other. We must stand together arm in arm holding each and one another like a united people.”
There we go again! Every time the nation has faced any problem the leaders have blamed it on the lack of unity. If we are united all our problems will disappear. Unity has been the panacea to all Zimbabwe’s problems.
The Gukurahundi massacre that left over 20 000 innocent civilians murdered in cold blood was blamed on lack of unity. And so the signing of the Zanu PF and PF Zapu Unity Accord on 22 December 1987 was heralded as great and sacred day marking the uniting of all Zimbabweans.
Indeed, 22 December 1987 is considered so sacred it has since been consecrated and declared a national holiday!
Here is the nub; Zimbabweans have been told that unity is the panacea of all the nation’s problems, they had unity rammed their throats, literally, back in 1987 and yet our problems have never gone away. Indeed, our problems have multiplied in quantity and complexity as the nation sunk deeper and deeper into this hell-on-earth we find ourselves in today.
Let me tell something Mr President, there are a hell lot more corona virus cases and deaths in Zimbabwe than the official figures of 30 000 and 979 respectively. And the corona virus infections are soaring because of the blundering incompetence of this government in the handling of the pandemic.
Zanu PF has been boasted about the country’s very low official corona virus figures, taking them as proof of the regime containing the pandemic. This was a deliberate lie; official figures are based on tested and confirmed cases but keeping the figure low by not testing is dishonest and foolish.
Ever since the outbreak of the corona virus pandemic, nearly a year ago, Zimbabwe has consistently failed to test, trace, track and isolate as per WHO recommendation and as common sense would dictate. Whilst SA was carrying out over 44 000 corona virus tests per day in December 2020, Zimbabwe with 1/4 SA’s population should have been doing 11 000 tests per day. We were doing 1 500 tests per day!
The price of carrying out few tests is that many infected people who, identified would go into isolation, are instead left in the community spreading the virus far and wide and fast.
Zimbabwe was always going to have some of the highest corona virus cases and deaths figures in the region because at the outbreak of the pandemic the country’s economy was already in total meltdown and its health care service was in tatters.
The 1987 Unity Accord was supposed to bring national unity, the panacea to all our national problems, and we were supposed to live happily ever after. What had actually happen was that Zanu PF was able to impose the de facto one-party dictatorship, under the pretext of unity. Zanu PF has then used the dictatorial powers to silence dissent, stifle debate and to stamp out all democratic competition and accountability.
40 years of Zanu PF gross mismanagement, rampant corruption and rank lawlessness have turned a promising economy into ruins. Each time people have tried to voice their concern with the way the nation’s affairs were being run; the party accused them of undermining the country’s unity and ruthlessly silenced them. This madness must now end!
Asking people to “stand together arm in arm holding each and one another like a united people” is not going to make the corona virus go away! What the country needs is competent leaders to make sound decisions and make good use of the nation’s human and material resources. And for that, we need to restore the people’s freedoms and rights including the right to free and fair elections – the prerequisite of good governance!
Mr Cross-Silence Cannot Be Misquoted
By Dr Tim Rainhard- In September 2019, Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, appointed a nine-member Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) to influence the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ)’s monetary policy.
Crucially, the MPC’s wide-sweeping responsibilities extend to setting limits on the Bank’s open market operations, ensuring price stability, and determining interest rates.
Chaired by Central Bank Governor, Dr John Mangudya, the Committee has done exceptionally well – by all accounts – in discharging its functions in spite of the well-documented difficult socio-economic environment under which it operates. The price stability that set-in after the foreign currency auction trading system was introduced in June last year is one of the MPC’s many achievements that are difficult not to acknowledge even amongst some of the RBZ’s harshest critics.
The same goes for the positive sentiment that has been restored after eluding the domestic economy since June 2013, when an uneasy coalition government between Zanu PF and the MDC ended.
On a few occasions, the MPC has, however, been found wanting. The irony of it is that in those few cases, Mr Eddie Cross would have wittingly or unwittingly put his foot in the mouth, forcing the entire RBZ machinery to do some damage control.
Unlike your typical, conservative banker, the chatty economist enjoys the limelight that comes with being a member of the MPC. He, however, gets excitable easily, especially in front of the cameras. He is thus prone to prematurely letting the cat out of the bag and deodorizing facts when he is in front of his audience.
While this served him well in the various technocratic roles he occupied in the Rhodesian government and during his 18 long years as a senior opposition politician in the Movement for Democratic Change, Mr Cross seems to be forgetting that he is now part of the nerve-centre of a financial system that is extremely sensitive to changes in macro-economic factors.
As a result, faux-pas have trailed him. Perhaps, his lowest point came less than a month after his appointment into the MPC when he ‘declared’ that a new currency was to be introduced in November 2019, forcing the secretary for information, publicity and broadcasting services to rebuke him strongly.
“We would like to make it clear that Mr E. Cross does not speak for the Government of Zimbabwe. Neither does he speak for the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ). His views are personal and not indicative of government’s policy thrust,” read part of the statement issued by Mr Mangwana on behalf of government back then.
That statement fell on deaf ears. Towards the end of last year, he sensationally claimed that the RBZ was introducing ZW$50, ZW$100 and ZW$200 banknotes to increase physical money supply from ZW$1,4 billion to about ZW$3 billion.
“Some time ago, we made a decision in the MPC to introduce new ZW$200, ZW$100 and ZW$$50 notes. I understand that this is being dealt with by the Governor working with the President because the President has to approve the designs and everything else…But I understand that the ZW$50 note will be available early in the New Year,” he boldly clamed.
Dr Mangudya had to issue a statement to set the record straight and calm jittery markets, which were alarmed that this was going to fuel inflation and the exchange rate, which has stabilised within the ZW$82 range against the United States dollar (US$) following the introduction of the auction system in June last year.
According to Dr Mangudya, the Central Bank is set to introduce the ZW$50 note to compliment lower denomination banknotes that are already in circulation, saying while this would curb cash shortages and improve transacting convenience; it would not impact negatively on money supply.
The correction by Dr Mangudya could not make him any wiser. A few days ago, Mr Cross was at it again, this time alleging during an online discussion forum convened by Alpha Media Holdings that the Central Bank was printing ZW$1 billion weekly, mainly to buy gold.
Once again, Dr Mangudya had to step in to douse inflationary expectations that had been caused by Mr Cross’ reckless and uninformed statement, amid justifiable concerns that the RBZ was sliding back to the era of Dr Gideon Gono when every little problem had to be resolved by printing money at Fidelity.
Apparently, Mr Cross had gotten his facts mixed up. In the latest case, he was merely trying to restate the obvious whereby the RBZ – through Fidelity Printers and Refiners – pay for 40% of the bullion purchased from the market in local currency (at the prevailing auction rate), while the 60% balance is deposited into the licenced gold buyers’ Foreign Currency Accounts (FCAs). As is the standard practice, the designated foreign currency dealers (including the RBZ) would then buy foreign currency from the market at prevailing auction rates to fund competing needs that require the resource in order to bring into the country essential imports such as drugs, equipment and other raw materials. In the case of the RBZ, the 40% portion retained from Fidelity Printers– the sole buyer of gold at the moment– and from other exporters is also used for this purpose.
While Dr Mangudya had to explain that, “So its net effect is zero on the increase in money supply”, the damage had already been done! Mr Cross must therefore be careful not to squander the goodwill reposed in him by Professor Ncube by undermining the Governor of the RBZ whose term of office was extended by President Emmerson Mnangagwa by another five years in May 2019.
As it is, the MPC chairman already has a lot in his plate, which is brimming with legacy issues, some stretching as far back as the 1970s.
Mr Cross is also doing a great disservice to the very MPC he is sworn to serve. Regrettably, he has co-opted himself as the spokesperson for both the RBZ and its MPC, when there are professionals in the field who are better placed and competent to act as mouthpieces for the two organs.
The damage this is inflicting on the image of the bank and its policies is regrettable. To all intents and purposes, official statements issued by the MPC after concluding its meetings should be sufficient and in keeping with modern trends whereby Central Banks are moving away from the long-standing conviction of the 1990s that monetary policy should be wrapped in mystery.
Anything else beyond these statements should be left to professionals in the field. Just as well, the RBZ has a fully-fledged communications unit which is well-placed to handle its internal and external communications. That alone, demonstrates that the RBZ is conscious of the need to communicate its objectives, its intentions, and the timing of its actions, without unnecessarily causing confusion as is becoming Mr Cross’ hallmark.
When handled properly, effective communication can assist the public in adjusting their expectations accordingly and ensuring that unexpected monetary impulses bear no lasting effects. In a world in which policy-making by surprises has lost its purpose, the RBZ is already structured in a way that makes its communication effective and purposeful.
Beyond the mandatory monetary policy statements, the MPC, through its chairman, had been issuing regular updates, which promotes transparency, accountability, while also reaffirming the RBZ’s firm commitment to a nominal anchor at levels consistent with its monetary policy objectives.
It therefore goes without saying that communication about the bank’s objectives helps nail down the steady state of the economy, the end point to which the economy spontaneously tends aftershocks fade. Communication about strategy also helps explain the way monetary policy behaves outside the steady state, how it responds to shocks and frictions to facilitate the economic convergence back to steady state.
At the same time, communicating about the principles that govern the strategy makes the process of adjustment more rapid and less painful. A growing body of empirical evidence supports the conjecture that transparent quantitative objectives and communication about the strategy reinforces monetary policy.
In the absence of frequent disclosures about policy and the economic situation, market participants may not be in a position to attribute fluctuations in inflation either to exogenous disturbances outside the control of the central bank or to changes in policy intentions. Adverse adjustments in expectations could therefore lead to an increase in inflation today and to a slower and more painful reversal later in the process.
While communication is an ongoing challenge and effective communication will always be characterized by a high degree of flexibility and adaptability in order to respond swiftly to a rapidly changing economic environment, Mr Cross’ brash style is a NO, NO. Admittedly, he has his strengths, one of which being his ability to speak his mind, and writing thought-provoking articles in the mainstream media. There is, however, a world of difference between his skillset and what is required to communicate policy at the level of the Central Bank.
Mr Cross can still make himself relevant by sticking to his active participation in the MPC’s affairs while avoiding making public statements on the Committee’s deliberations because that is outside his competences.
The sages say silence cannot be misquoted. For the sake of stability in our markets, Mr Cross must hold his peace!

Qadr Amini Speaks On Controversial Substitution
Qadr Amini says he is still in emotional pain after he was controversially substituted in the Warriors’ game against Mali on Sunday.
The Ngezi star started in the match but was pulled out with less than three minutes played in the first half and replaced by Ian Nekati, a change which came as a huge surprise.
Amini had initially been declared unfit to play at the tournament but a late fitness test conducted before the game cleared him.
Speaking to the Herald, the utility player admitted he was confused when he was taken out three minutes after the kick-off.
“At first I thought maybe it was a mistake and maybe it was someone who had been injured,” he said. “Still in that confused state, I walked out, and my mind was spinning.
“It was only explained later to me that the reason I had been substituted was to keep me safe. But safe from what?
“I was pained, and I am still in pain. Just imagine that I had been cleared to play by the doctors only to be pulled out because I could be hurt. Well, that’s part of football, but I wanted to play since I had missed the opening two games.”
Meanwhile, ZIFA is insisting Amini was not fit to play and have promised to investigate the issue.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Notorious Attempt To Block SB Moyo’s Kids From Heroes Acre Burial To Be Presided By Mnangagwa…

Chelsea Set To Announce Lampard Replacement
Chelsea have confirmed the club have parted company with head coach Frank Lampard.
The Blues are going through a poor run of form and currently sit in the nineth position. The team has lost five out of their last eight Premier League games.
A statement by the club reads:
Chelsea Football Club have today parted company with Head Coach Frank Lampard.
This has been a very difficult decision, and not one that the owner and the Board have taken lightly.
We are grateful to Frank for what he has achieved in his time as Head Coach of the Club. However, recent results and performances have not met the Club’s expectations, leaving the Club mid-table without any clear path to sustained improvement.
There can never be a good time to part ways with a club legend such as Frank, but after lengthy deliberation and consideration it was decided a change is needed now to give the Club time to improve performances and results this season.
The Club will be making no further comment until such time as a new Head Coach is appointed.
Former PSG coach Thomas Tuchel is the favourite to take over.- Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

Latest On Lionel Messi Ban
The Spanish Football Federation has rejected Barcelona’s appeal on Lionel Messi’s two-match ban.
Messi received a red card in Sunday’s Spanish Super Cup final to Athletic Bilbao. He was expelled in last minute of regulation time following a VAR intervention when he struck Asier Villalibre in an off-the-ball incident as frustration got the better of him.
The red card was his first in his senior Barca career.
According to AFP, the 33-year old will not be able to play for Barcelona in Sunday’s game away at Elche in La Liga.
He served the first match of his suspension as the Catalans won 2-0 in extra time away to near neighbours Cornella, of Spain’s third-tier Segunda B division, on Thursday in the Copa del Rey.-Soccer 24 Zimbabwe

ZIFA Statement On Controversial Qadr Amini Substitution
ZIFA has released the following statement explaining the infamous substitution of Qadr Amini 149 seconds after kick-off in Cameroon yesterday. The Warriors were playing Mali last night when the historic substitution happened.
According to ZIFA Amini was substituted on medical grounds as the board noticed that he was playing despite his medical condition that had been picked during an MRI test:
ZIFA EXPLANATION REGARDING THE PARTICIPATION OF PLAYER QADR AMINI IN THE AFRICAN NATIONS CHAMPIONSHIP (CHAN) TOURNAMENT, CAMEROON 2021
The Zimbabwe Football Association (ZIFA) has noted media inquiries regarding the substitution of Qadr Amini in the third minute of Zimbabwe’s match against Mali at the African Nations Championship (CHAN) finals in Doula, Cameroon yesterday (Sunday 24 January 2021).
ZIFA would like to categorically state that in line with CAF’s medical guidelines, there was a test that we were supposed to conduct on all players who had recently recovered from COVID- 19 called Cardiac MRI test.
Our medical team checked among radiology centres in the country and there was none in Zimbabwe conducting such a test.
ZIFA wrote to CAF to arrange and facilitate that the affected CHAN players be tested in Cameroon. All the affected players were tested upon arrival in Yaounde and the Board was notified prior to the commencement of the tournament that the player was not fit to play due to heart complications. A decision was made not to field the player until the recovery of the player and subsequent retests. The Board was shocked to see the player in the starting line-up without the player having undergone another test.
The technical and medical teams were engaged and could not give a convincing explanation on why the player was included. The Board then made a decision to order the technical team not to use the player until a retest had been conducted. The decision was made in the interest of the player’s health.
The Board played its oversight role to protect the player from potential permanent harm that may have included death as well as to safeguard the reputation of the game of football.
The insinuations in some media platforms that such was interference with team selection therefore has no basis.
The ZIFA Board has set a commission of inquiry made up of experts to understand what exactly took place and whether it was proper to field the player.
ZIFA urges the public and media to respect the privacy of the health status of the player and we wish the player a quick recovery.

Can Antibiotics Treat COVID-19?
The most common symptoms of Covid-19 are: fever, dry cough and fatigue.
Other symptoms that are less common and may affect some patients include: loss of taste or smell; nasal congestion; conjunctivitis (also known as red eyes); sore throat; headache; muscle or joint pain; different types of skin rash; nausea or vomiting; diarrhoea; chills or dizziness. Symptoms of severe Covid-19 disease include: shortness of breath; loss of appetite; confusion; persistent pain or pressure in the chest; and high temperature (above 38 °C). More severe and rare neurological complications such as strokes, brain inflammation, delirium and nerve damage.
People of all ages who experience fever and/or cough associated with difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, chest pain or pressure, or loss of speech or movement should seek medical care immediately.
If possible, call your health care provider, hotline (in Zimbabwe the number is 2019) or health facility first, so you can be directed to the right clinic.
What should I do if I have Covid-19 symptoms?
If you have any symptoms suggestive of Covid-19, call your health care provider or Covid-19 hotline for instructions and find out when and where to get a test, stay at home for 14 days away from others and monitor your health. If you have shortness of breath or pain or pressure in the chest, seek medical attention at a health facility immediately.
Call your health care provider or hotline in advance for direction to the right health facility. If you live in an area with malaria or dengue fever, seek medical care if you have a fever. If local guidance recommends visiting a medical centre for testing, assessment or isolation, wear a medical mask while travelling to and from the facility and during medical care.
Also keep at least a one-metre distance from other people and avoid touching surfaces with your hands.
This applies to adults and children.
Are antibiotics effective in preventing or treating Covid-19?
Antibiotics do not work against viruses; they only work on bacterial infections. Covid-19 is caused by a virus, so antibiotics do not work. Antibiotics should not be used as a means of prevention or treatment of Covid-19. In hospitals, physicians will sometimes use antibiotics to prevent or treat secondary bacterial infections which can be a complication of Covid-19 in severely ill patients. They should only be used as directed by a physician to treat a bacterial infection.

COVID-19: Prioritize Frontline Health Workers- MDC Alliance
Tinashe Sambiri|The MDC Alliance has castigated selfish Zanu PF bigwigs for denying frontline health workers access to Coronavirus vaccine.
The MDC Alliance argues frontline workers should be given preference in the administration of the vaccine because of their vulnerability to the deadly pandemic.
Below is MDC Alliance deputy spokesperson Clifford Hlatywayo’s statement:
The diabolic plan by the regime to prioritize themselves in the administration of the coronavirus vaccine is regrettable and unacceptable.
The vaccination programme must target medical practitioners, our soldiers in this fight against the spread of this deadly virus, the elderly, and the vulnerable.
Not to prioritize Ministers and MPs, knowing very well that they are the ones in those positions. So it means vaccine is for Zanu pf members. That selfish tendencies must not be tolerated.
Every lockdown they target the poor, majority of whom are in the informal sector. They are not allowed to move or transact their businesses.
They want to fend for their families but because the regime does not consider them as important citizens, they are always considered as enemies and second class citizens.
Government workers including teachers and other critical sectors who play a very crucial role in society are neglected and also considered as second class.
The first priority of the vaccine should be the frontline staff, elderly and those with co-morbidities.

Friends Of Job Sikhala Solidarity Trust Warns Of Impending Explosion…
Friends of Job Sikhala warns of impending explosion over continued detention of Job Sikhala
Monday 25 January 2021
The Friends of Job Sikhala Solidarity Trust condemns the arrest and continued unjustified detention of Job Sikhala in the strongest possible terms, particularly political persecution, intolerance and scare tactics, which have put a stain yet again on the Emmerson Mnangagwa and Zanu pf regime due to its dictatorial tendencies.
We therefore, call for Job Sikhala’s, Hopewell Chin’ono and Alan Moyo’s freedom and demand an end to the abuse of judicial service to settle political scores.
We unequivocally believe in the basic right to freedom of speech and call on the regime in Harare to respect and uphold the citizen’s right to liberty and freedom of expression. Charging Sikhala, Chin’ono and Mahere under a law that was struck down by the Constitutional Court was a violation of their right to free speech. Zimbabwe’s constitution guarantees the right to freedom of expression and the state must curtail its assault of this right.
The systematic arrest and continued detention of Job Sikhala and others is just the latest iteration of a protracted and concerted effort by the regime in Harare to silence his outspoken voice, the regime thinks this arrest will cow the people of this country, then we have news for them. “Zimbabweans will not be intimidated and they will fight for a truly democratic society.”
We strongly hold the view that these actions are unhelpful as they aggravate tension and create a volatile atmosphere. The impunity with which security operatives are operating in the continued harassment and systematic arrest of Hon Job Sikhala is leading this country closer to a breaking point.
The Friends of Job Sikhala Solidarity Trust appeals to all pro democracy campaigners, human rights activists, Africa Union and the United Nations to oppose and condemn such arrests which are being engineered by those in power. It is essential that the international community not turn away from what is happening in Zimbabwe. This repression is unacceptable and must stop.

Cornered Govt Appreciates Frontline Workers
By A Correspondent- The vice-chairperson of the Ad-Hoc Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Covid-19, Professor Amon Murwira, has emphasised the importance of frontline workers.
Professor Murwira who is also the Minister of Higher and Tertiary Education said health caregivers are the heroes of our time and everyone must play their part in helping them do their jobs in the difficult time of the Covid-19 pandemic.
He made the remarks after disturbing reports from some areas which suggest that nurses were being stigmatised after images from Norton showed some nurse aides being barred from boarding public transport. Murwira said:
Health services, nurses, doctors are the heroes of our time.
Everyone must make sure they play a part in helping them do their job. Yes, the Government has provided transport for frontline workers, but as a responsible society, we need to be seen appreciating their efforts.
Let us never lose our guard in the fight against Covid-19. Let us continue to adhere to the prescribed protocols to win the fight against this virus, and also avoid a spike in Covid-19 infections.
This is happening when health workers have continued to show resilience even when health caregiver, especially nurses, have died after testing positive to coronavirus.
Health caregivers have since 2019 embarked on periodic industrial actions while some have since deserted public health institutions citing potential exposure to the virus and poor remuneration.
Meanwhile, the Zimbabwe United Passenger Company has indicated intentions to beef up its fleet in response to high demand.

Chinese Firm In Covid-19 Testing Scam
By A Correspondent- A Chinese mining company, Afrochine Smelting has been embroiled in a COVID-19 testing scandal after it allegedly assigned unqualified personnel to carry out tests for the respiratory virus on its 600 workers.
Workers at the Ngezi-based mining company told NewsDay that the administration manager, Angui Zhang Zong, gave an order to have the tests carried out at the company premises.
They said workers from the safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ) department, mainly students on attachment, were compelled to administer the tests despite lacking the professional know-how.
An audio recording in NewsDay’s possession revealed that during the company’s COVID-19 response plan meeting, Zhong ordered that the tests for the virus should be done at the company.
“We will test the people here, and then we quarantine the affected people. The rest of the response plan, we will look at it when we have cases,” Zhong is heard saying.
However, workers said they were surprised when a group of Chinese workers at the company drove to Harare on January 15, to have COVid-19 polymerase chain reaction tests administered on them. it is then alleged that five of the Chinese workers tested positive.
“On January 18, the administration manager held a meeting with personnel in the SHeQ office, and ordered them to carry out COVid-19 tests on the 600 workers which were to commence the following day,” one of the workers said.
“The wife of the administration manager, Mrs Xian Zhang, who is head of stores department, placed some COVid-19 igM/igG rapid test kits on the table and gave a demonstration.
“The results of the demonstration came out negative. However, it is not known whether this Mrs Xian Zhang has a medical qualification, nor has been trained for COVid-19 treatment and management.”
According to Statutory instrument 102 of 2020, which enforced the original COVid-19 lockdown period, employers must use the rapid results diagnostic test or any other test approved by the Minister of Health and Child Care.
However, the exercise should be coordinated by the Health ministry.
“What surprises us is that on January 20, the SHeQ director Pardon Kufakunesu gave a direct order to Petros Kumbwizha (computer science intern) and Thabeth Matoda (environmental technology intern) to conduct the testing,” said another worker.
“When the exercise commenced, the testing team did not know their COVID-19 status until late in the afternoon. it was then discovered that one of the testing team members had tested positive for the virus and had to be replaced, although he had tested 150 workers.
“Some of those who were testing had no personal protective equipment. As for students on attachment, they were mostly the ones at risk as they were exposed to blood. they were doing it for the first team.”
Chinese-run mining companies operating in Zimbabwe have been accused of rampant abuse of their workers.
Last year, two workers at Chinese Rum Mine in Gweru were shot and wounded by their Chinese boss after they complained about outstanding wages.
Contacted for comment, Gilbert Kwaramba, the Afrochine Smelting human resources manager referred NewsDay to Kufakunesu, who despite seeing the questions on his WhatsApp platform did not respond by the time of going to print yesterday.

Doctors React To Threats Policy
By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Hospital Doctors Association which represents junior and middle-level doctors has reminded the government that it has a zero-tolerance to threats policy.
This comes after the Permanent Secretary of Information, Nick Mangwana, had insinuated that some doctors were deliberately killing political elites in hospitals. He has since apologised and withdrawn his statement.
Still, the doctors issued a statement reiterating that they have a zero-tolerance to threats poliy. Below is ZHDA’s statement.
In the light of recent events, the ZHDA would like to remind responsible authorities of its zero tolerance to threats targeting its members, whether in person or through social media platforms.
The labeling as “health assassins’ of dedicated healthcare workers, risking their lives daily to save the people of our land, is not only disheartening but irresponsible and is regrettable, coming from a senior government official.
We urge members of the public to continue abiding to COVID-19 regulations in order to safeguard life and prevent overwhelming our already incapacitated health care system.

Duo Hauled To Court For Forging June 2020 Examination Results
By A Correspondent- Two men from Chitungwiza Monday appeared before the court for forging Zimbabwe Schools Examination Council (Zimsec) 2020 June results.
The duo, Misheck Tawanda Cherera (20) and Zaine Stanley Goreraza (27), both of Chitungwiza, pleaded not guilty of forgery when they appeared before magistrate Denis Mangosi.
The state alleges that on January 22, 2021, Cherera went to Zimsec offices in Mount Pleasant intending to check the authenticity of his Ordinary Level June results for the year 2020.
When the officials there checked, they discovered that he had produced a fake result slip with passes which were not appearing on his original slip.
He was arrested and he implicated Goreraza who in turn implicated another accomplice who is still at large.
Magistrate Denis Mangosi remanded them to March 3, 2020, on a $3 000 bail each.
Forgery of academic documents has been on the rise with reports suggesting that some government officials had been in offices using bogus results.
Recently, Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (Zimche) parted ways with its top operations manager Mrs Florence Chimbunu after it was exposed that she had a single Ordinary Level pass.
Others have been paying others to write examinations for them.

ARV Shortages Hit Byo
By A Correspondent- Bulawayo has been hit by a shortage of antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), with patients saying the COVID-19 lockdown period had worsened the situation.
Some of the patients, who spoke to Southern Eye, said they used to get their medication once every six months, but now they are forced to access them on a monthly basis which is costly.
Last year, people living with HIV and Aids experienced difficulties in accessing second line drugs from public institutions and they were forced to buy them from pharmacies at a cost of US$25.
HIV activist Dumisani Nkomo said it was saddening that even after getting assurances that ARVs would not stockout, patients were still experiencing difficulties in accessing them.
“We got an assurance that drugs will never stock-out but this is not the case.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is now contributing to shortages of ARVs.
“I recently went to get my supplies but I was told that they could not give me supplies that can last for six months as they were in short supply.
“I was only given supplies that can last for one month,” Nkomo said.
He said if urban areas were experiencing stock-outs of ARVs, then rural areas would be the worst affected.
“We are not looking for special treatment as we know that we are currently in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We are just wondering what the future holds for persons living with HIV as we suspect that funds for ARVs will be diverted towards COVID-19 mitigation.
“As a result of drug shortages, some young people on ARVs will end up defaulting,” he said.
Bulawayo provincial medical director Welcome Mlilo said some ARV formulation stocks were not adequate.
“Some of the formulations are not adequately stocked, so a few clients on selected regimens would receive a month’s supply instead of three to six months’ supplies,” Mlilo said.
However, he said a majority of HIV patients will continue to receive three months to six months supplies of their medication.

Zanu PF Thugs Storm Mutare Council Meeting, Force Councilors To Stop Meeting
ZANU-PF supporters reportedly disrupted a Pungwe Breweries meeting in Mutare last week in what is believed to be politically-motivated move.
It is alleged that Zanu-PF activists, who included Occasion Chimwendo, Wellington Moyo and Kenneth Chimbuya stormed the Civic Centre in Mutare and demanded that a meeting which was being held by Pungwe Breweries, a subsidiary of the Mutare City Council should be stopped.
The meeting’s agenda was to replace two former MDC Alliance councillors, Edson Kalulu and Kudakwashe Chisango on the company board. The two were recalled recently by the MDCT led by Douglas Mwonzora.
Mutare City Council spokesperson Spren Mutiwi said council was investigating the matter.
“We are still investigating the issue to have an appreciation of the motive behind the disruption,” he said.
A council official, who commented on condition of anonymity, said he witnessed the drama.
“We wanted to install a transitional board to run council affairs for the next three months, as we are awaiting the Pungwe financial report. The disruption was done by Zanu-PF supporters,” he said.
The source added that during the melee, security details were present, including military intelligence officers who said there was need for the 3pm COVID-19 lockdown regulations to be enforced and, therefore, the meeting should end.
Mutare mayor Blessing Tandi refused to comment on the matter.

Funeral Operators Pushed To The Limit By The Covid-19 Scourge
By A Correspondent- Zimbabwe’s funeral assurance sector has allayed fears of possible collapse as the COVID-19 scourge intensifies and affects capacity to meet policyholder claims.
Taka Svosve, the Zimbabwe Association of Funeral Assurers boss, told NewsDay Business that this was despite the concerns that shareholders in many firms were failing to inject fresh capital to meet prescribed thresholds in the third quarter of 2020, investments into “tangible service assets” will help the sector pull through one of its toughest eras in decades.
“The funeral assurance business model in Zimbabwe is a service-based model where the funeral policy is directly linked to a defined funeral service benefit right from inception of the policy,” Svosve said.
“The assurer continuously invests in tangible service assets that are needed to meet policyholder expectation in the event of claim. Such assets include, but are
not limited to mortuaries, hearses, buses, lowering equipment, caskets and coffins. These do not necessarily require the assurer to liquidate his compliance capital at the point of claim in order to meet the policyholder claim. What is important is that funeral assurers consistently replenish their service assets in anticipation of any eventuality. However, this does not mean that funeral assurers that are not up-to-date with compliance capital should sit back and relax. They should regularise their positions since this is a statutory requirement,” he added.
Svosve spoke as Zimbabwe is battling to contain a relentless surge in COVID-19 infections and deaths, which exploded in November.
The pandemic had killed over 960 people by Sunday, in over 30 000 infections.
The industry has been pushed to the limit by the surge, which came as five out of eight operators failed to meet third quarter Insurance and Pensions Commission (Ipec)’s minimum capital requirements.
Funeral assurers are required to maintain a minimum capital requirement of $62,50 million as prescribed in Statutory Instrument 59 of 2020.
It means if the pandemic continues at the pace and scale that it has exhibited lately for a prolonged period, operators that run out of capital will have no fallback positions.
In that event, funeral assurers may only avoid a crisis if they step up to inject capital, or if Zimbabwe pushes back the pandemic before balance sheets are overstretched.
“Funeral parlours are somehow managing despite the increasing constraints caused by the surge in COVID-19 deaths since the beginning of the year,” Svosve said.
“More planning in terms of infrastructure like mortuaries and even burial space need to be considered urgently since nobody knows when and how this will end. We are calling upon government to partner with funeral parlours for (investment into) related infrastructure in case the current situation develops into a catastrophe,” he said.
Economist Victor Bhoroma said the industry was already overwhelmed.
“Funeral assurance companies are overwhelmed for sure. The number of deaths has stretched the few human and financial resources on the ground, which were obviously designed with normal mortality rates in mind before COVID-19 hit,” Bhoroma said.
“This will undoubtedly impact the insurance sector with possible premium hikes to compensate for the increased costs and risks undertaken to handle pandemic debts. Going forward Ipec would also need to look at capitalisation from non-accounting terms with a clear focus on disaster preparedness and emergency management capacity for funeral assurers,” he said.

Zim Man Jailed 10yrs For Armed Robbery
By A Correspondent- A Zimbabwean man and his Motswana accomplice have been slapped with a 10-year effective jail term each for an armed robbery which they committed in Maun, Botswana in 2018.
Llyod Choto (37) and Moagi Gabantheetse (43) subjected their victim, a woman, to a night of hell during the commission of the crime.
They were convicted on counts of robbery and theft of a motor vehicle when they appeared before Maun magistrate Thebeetsile Mulalo last week.
Mulalo sentenced the two to 10 years for robbery, and five years for theft.
The magistrate said the sentences would run concurrently.
The pair reportedly had spent some time in jail, with Choto having languished in prison for two years, while Gabantheetse had been locked up for a year. Their sentences were backdated to the time of their incarceration.
The two robbed Josephine Moetse, after subjecting her to torture.
During the trial, it was heard that they broke into her home in the early hours of September 30, 2018 after tampering with the alarm system.
Moetse, who was asleep and naked, woke up to turn off the alarm and was startled by the intruders in the hallway.
In her testimony, she said the two men beat and dragged her to the bedroom where they dressed her and demanded money.
She said she gave them her handbag and they took 300 pula, as well as her cellphone and credit card. They demanded the credit card pin from her.
They drove her to a bushy area after tying her up, and Choto went to withdraw cash using her card while Gabantheetse remained with her in the car.
After failing to withdraw the money, the two assailants left Moetse in the bush.
She eventually managed to untie herself and ran to the nearest homestead, where she borrowed a phone and called the police.
Her car was found abandoned in a field later that day.-newsday
Emirates Airlines Set to Increase Harare Flights
Dubai based airline, Emirates says it is increasing flights between Zimbabwe, Zambia and Dubai beginning next month as efforts to increase connectivity.
This will bring the number of flights to four times a week.
“Emirates will increase its flights between Harare Lusaka and Dubai to four times a week from February 6.
“The expanded schedule of services will offer better connectivity for customers in Zimbabwe and Zambia to Emirates’ growing destination network via Dubai of more than 100 destinations,” said Emirates.
According to the airline, it will operate its fourth flight on Wednesdays, using a Boeing 777-300ER aircraft from Harare to Dubai via Lusaka, complementing its current Friday, Saturday and Sunday flights on the route.
The Dubai-based airline resumed operations to Harare in October and has since seen a gradual increase in travel demand. The resumption came after a Covid-19 induced break as countries effected travel restrictions to limit the spread of the pandemic.
Emirates connects business and leisure travellers from Zimbabwe to the Middle East, Europe, the Far East, the Americas, Australia and West Asia.
Emirates recently announced free cover on Covid-19 related medical expenses for travellers should they be diagnosed with Covid-19 during their travel while they are away from home.
“This cover is immediately effective for Emirates customers flying with tickets purchased between December 1, 2020 and January 31, 2021 and is valid for 31 days from the moment they fly the first sector of their journey.
“This means Emirates customers can continue to benefit from the added assurance of this cover, even if they travel onwards to another city after arriving at their Emirates destination,” said Emirates.
The free, global cover for Covid-19 related costs is further complemented by the comprehensive set of measures that Emirates has put in place at every step of the customer journey to ensure the safety of its customers and employees on the ground and in the air, including the distribution of complimentary hygiene kits containing masks, gloves, hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes to all customers.

“Covid-19 Vaccines For Cabinet Ministers, Top Gvnt Officials”
By A Correspondent- Government yesterday revealed that it was failing to import enough vaccines for citizens, and would prioritise Cabinet ministers and senior government officials, Members of Parliament (MPs), the security sector and frontline health workers.
This is despite that a majority of people that have succumbed to COVID-19 are ordinary citizens after the country recorded 1 075 deaths as of last night.
Zimbabwe has witnessed a steep rise in the number of infections of the coronavirus, now having recorded more than 31 000 cumulative infections.
Ministers Sibusiso Busi Moyo (Foreign Affairs and International Trade), Joel Biggie Matiza (Transport and Infrastructure Development), Perrance Shiri (Lands and Agriculture, Water and Rural resettlement) and ellen Gwaradzimba (Manicaland Provincial Affairs) succumbed to COVid-19, but the majority of the 31 000 infections in the country consist of ordinary Zimbabweans.
Yesterday, Health and Child Care ministry (MoHCC) statistics showed that 326 people tested positive to the virus, bringing the number of active COVid-19 cases in the country to 7 694.
Only 105 people are hospitalised at different health institutions.
The disclosure that ministers, MPs, government officials, the security sector and frontline workers would be prioritised should the country secure vaccines was made in Parliament by the head of monitoring and evaluation in the Health and Child Care ministry, Robert Mudyiradima.
He said this during a virtual meeting of the Ruth Labode-led Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Health to explain the COVid-19 situation in the country and how the government was coping in mitigating the pandemic.
Mudyiradima said the COVid-19 vaccine to be procured would not be enough to cater for all citizens.
“There is a need for a vaccine to control the spread of COVID-19, and we have to know which vaccine meets our requirements and which one we need. Most of the vaccines have not passed phase three trials,” he said.
“The vaccine might not be enough and there will be a group that will be prioritised such as frontline workers, ministers, MPs and members of the security sector.”
It was also revealed that the money to be used in the procurement of the vaccine was not factored in the MoHCC budget.
The funds to procure the vaccines were still being mobilised.
Director of epidemiology in the MoHCC, Portia Manangazira, told the committee that Zimbabwe would not get all the vaccines, as some of them were not meant for Africa, mostly because they were produced under subsidies.
“On the issue of medicines intended for developing countries, some of them are subsidies, and so it might be one of the reasons behind the labelling. it is not about the quality of the vaccines. We have one of the most stringent regulators, which are the Medicines Control Authority of Zimbabwe which checks the quality of medication …” she said.
Manangazira said that the vaccine that would be rolled out to the public would be safe and scientifically proven.
“The vaccine manufacturing process is very rigorous and whatever comes will be scientifically proven beyond doubt,” Manangazira said.
The cost of the vaccine is said to be between US$2 to US$9 per dose.
Zimbabwe expects to receive three million doses of the vaccine under the COVAX scheme facilitated by the African Union at a cost of US$20,5 million. they are being supplied by Pfizer-AstraZeneca.
Health analyst Itai Rusike, who is the executive director of the Community Working Group on Health (CWGH), said government needed to prioritise frontline health care workers and the elderly in its vaccination plan before inoculating the politicians.
“It is with relief that we welcome the news that the government has managed to acquire some doses of the COVid-19 vaccine. We hope that the government will prioritise our frontline health workers, the elderly and people with existing health conditions before inoculating the political elite and the general public,” he said.
“Depending on whether we use a vaccine that requires one or two doses, around 15 million to 30 million doses will be required, along with a massive roll-out effort to achieve herd immunity. this cannot be done by the government alone. We, the people, especially the millions of us who live in the direst of circumstances, must be central to this effort. No one is safe until everyone is safe.”
Rusike said politicians should not use COVid-19 emergency vaccines to score points and raise their profiles.
Said scholar Austin Chakaodza: “there can be no doubt that frontline workers deserve first priority because they are the ones that are in the forefront in trying to contain the spread of the pandemic.
“After the frontline workers, the ordinary people of Zimbabwe should then be given the second priority. there should be no special treatment given to certain categories of people because of their status in society.”
Chakaodza said the virus did not distinguish between ministers, soldiers, MPs, factory workers or peasants.
“The vaccines should be available to all and sundry. After all, the majority of the people who are dying from the COVid-19 pandemic are ordinary people whose names don’t find their way in the media,” he said.
But some organisations that represent ordinary people like the Zimbabwe National teachers Association (Zinatu) yesterday said they would not allow their members to accept the COVid-19 vaccine even if they were to be given priority during its roll-out.
Zinatu chief executive Manuel Nyawo said it was important that the vaccine be administered to the workers after all the necessary precautions to ensure that it was not harmful to the human immune system were taken.
He said workers could not be used as guinea pigs during experiments to find out the effectiveness of the vaccine.
“We hear shocking news that there is going to be a vaccination exercise to all of us. We are anxiously waiting to see how this is going to be executed, given our worry over the effectiveness and harmlessness of the vaccine to the Zimbabweans,” Nyawo said in a statement.
“We shall not allow the government of Zimbabwe to experiment with the vaccine on workers. We do not want teachers to be used as experimental objects.”
However, several health professionals have encouraged Zimbabwe to get its citizens vaccinated against COVID-19.
Mpilo Central Hospital acting chief executive and health expert Solwayo Ngwenya said at least 10 million of the population should be vaccinated in order to contain the spread of the virus.
Meanwhile, Home Affairs secretary Aaron Nhepera yesterday warned the public to desist from peddling falsehoods about vaccines and the COVid-19 pandemic, saying it had the effect of destabilising the nation.
“It’s, however, a fact that the COVID-19 pandemic has dealt a devastating blow to our social circles affecting as it has done to close family members, acquaintances, colleagues and many others dear to us. this is indeed a reality but which gives no justification to blatant falsehoods that have the effect of destabilising the nations,” Nhepera said in a statement.-newsday
