Mwonzora Sacked

By A Correspondent- The interim Secretary of the opposition MDC-T, Douglas Mwonzora has been suspended from the party by the interim party president, Thokozani Khupe, following the chaos that rocked the party’s extraordinary congress held at the Harare International Conference Centre this Sunday.

Morgen Komichi and Khupe left the HICC in a huff as they were being attacked by individuals allegedly aligned to Mwonzora. Senator Mwonzora says he cannot be dismissed from the party by a fellow candidate.

Said Mwonzora:

“I expect them (Khupe and Komichi) to cool down, to relax and accept the verdict of the people. I don’t think it is a split. A split is where the owners of the MDC T split. The owners of the MDC in this regard are intact and as you see, as you saw it was individual candidates who saw how the election was going who have moved out.

The members of congress remained and resolved that they should continue and they have continued. I can’t be suspended by a fellow candidate in an election during an election. And in a few minutes, hours time we will have a new president and it is up to that president and the national executive to deal with that matter. It is an act of illegality.”

The congress was meant to elect the party’s substantive heir to the late founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai.

Zanu PF Will Win 2023 Because Opposition Lacks Unity” – Nonsense, Unity Will Never Ever Supplant Competence

By Patrick Guramatunhu- “Opposition politician Jacob Ngarivhume sees a bleak future for opposition politics in Zimbabwe, and has resigned to the fact that the ruling Zanu-PF will win again in the 2023 elections,” reported Zimbabwe Voice.

“I think more disappointing than fighting Zanu-PF is the lack of unity amongst the opposition,” Ngarivhume wrote on social media, adding that now was the time to act and to “tell it like it is”.

Poor Ngarivhume, even now with the benefit of hindsight, he still does not get it! MDC A lacked leaders with the intellectual prowess and vision to implement the reforms and thus stop Zanu PF rigging elections. Zanu PF will win the 2023 elections as long as the party retains its carte blanche powers to rig the elections, even if all the 130, not just the six as in 2018, opposition political parties were united.

It is not the lack of a united opposition that has kept Zanu PF in power, but rather lack of a competent and quality opposition.

You cannot make a silk purse out of sower’s ear!

The 2008 elections were a watershed in Zimbabwe’s history, Zanu PF’s cheating and use of wanton violence was so blatant that not even SADC and AU leaders, known for turning a blind-eye to dodgy Zimbabwean elections, were forced to condemn the elections. SADC leaders forced Mugabe and Zanu PF to agree to the implementation of the democratic reforms designed to stop the party rigging elections.

During the 2008 to 2013 GNU, Morgan Tsvangirai and his MDC friends had the golden opportunity to implement the democratic reforms. They failed to implement even one token reform in five years – proof they are breathtakingly incompetent and corrupt.

It did not make any sense for any one in the opposition camp to contest the 2013, especially the MDC-T given its popularity, elections knowing fully well without reforms Zanu PF would rig the elections. And yet MDC-T participated in the flawed and illegal elections, turning victory into defeat; Zanu PF was never going to lose an election in which the party has carte blanche powers to rig.

David Coltart, one of the MDC ministers in the 2008 to 2013 GNU, argued the opposition would have boycotted the 2013 elections in they were united; same argument Jacob Ngarivhume is making now.

“The worst aspect for me about the failure to agree a coalition was that both MDCs couldn’t now do the obvious – withdraw from the elections,” wrote Coltart in his book.

“The electoral process was so flawed, so illegal, that the only logical step was to withdraw, which would compel SADC to hold Zanu PF to account. But such was the distrust between the MDC-T and MDC-N that neither could withdraw for fear that the other would remain in the elections, winning seats and giving the process credibility.”

Just before the 2018 elections, the opposition did unite. Transform Zimbabwe led by Ngarivhume, MDC-N of which Coltart was a senior member and MDC-T led by Morgan Tsvangirai plus three other parties formed a coalition, MDC Alliance (MDC A).

Judging from the size of the crowds attending MDC A rallies, the party commanded a very significant popular support. The party participated in the 2018 elections; there was never any talk of boycotting the elections although it was clear, with no reforms in place, Zanu PF would rig the elections.

MDC-T turned certain electoral victory into landslide defeat in 2013 by participating in flawed and illegal elections for the same reason MDC leaders failed to implement even one reform during the GNU – they are breathtakingly incompetent. As we saw, uniting the opposition to form the MDC A made no difference as the coalition too participated in the flawed and illegal 2018 elections.

United or not the MDC A and the rest of Zimbabwe’s opposition will participate in the 2023 elections, with not even one reform in place. Mnangagwa and his Zanu PF cronies are counting on the opposition to participate and hence the reason the regime has ignored all calls to implement reforms.

Zimbabwe’s opposition leaders are so breathtakingly incompetent they are failing to see the importance of implementing the reforms, of free and fair elections, verified voters’ roll, etc.; even after these have been explained to them thousands of times. These simpletons have not only failed to comprehend the reality one cannot make a silk purse out of sow’s ear but are stuck with foolish notion that unity can and must supplant quality!

It is 40 years of corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF misrule that has dragged the nation into the economic and political mess Zimbabwe finds itself in today. However, the reason we are stuck in this mess these last decade is because MDC leaders are corrupt and breathtakingly incompetent. It is not so much a united opposition the nation is dying for but a competent one.

Gutu “Celebrates” Decision To Quit MDC T

By A Correspondent| Former MDC-T Deputy President Obert Gutu said he feels vindicated over a decision he made to quit the party and subsequently politics saying he could not be part and parcel of the charade he saw at the extra-ordinary congress held yesterday.

The MDC-T congress turned into chaos over accusations of rigging with the voters roll being the source of conflict as countless members could not find their names while candidates including Elias Mudzuri, Morgan Komichi and Thokozani Khupe left the venue in a huff after condemning the process.

Khupe eventually suspended the Secretary General Douglas Mwonzora who was also a candidate saying he rigged the elections.

In response, Mwonzora said another candidate cannot have the power to suspended a contestant.

The elections however proceeded in the absence of the trio of Mudzuri, Komichi and Khupe with Mwonzora announced the winner albeit discredited.

This forced Gutu to feel he made a good decision to quit the party.

“I surely made the CORRECT decision. There was NO way I was going to continue to be part & parcel of this charade. It’s certainly beyond my personal dignity,” said Gutu.

Khupe Runs For Dear Life At The EOC

By A Correspondent- MDC-T interim leader Thokozani Khupe and party national chairperson Morgen Komichi yesterday ran for dear life after suspected followers of secretary general Douglas Mwonzora pelted the top table with some empty and half empty water bottles accusing the two of trying to stop a party extraordinary congress taking place at the Rainbow Towers in Harare.

Khupe was forced out of the Special Congress after calling off the elections citing rigging.

The warring factional contestants Khupe and Mwonzora were in a near fist fight over alleged voter fraud at the ongoing Supreme Court-ordered Extraordinary Congress.

ZRP Call for Pubic to Wear Face Masks – Hypocritical: Bulawayo Residents

By Tiden Makeke

A cop in Bulawayo yesterday illegally boarded a taxi without wearing a face mask despite threats by Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP), Spokesperson, Paul Nyathi to “take … action against … offenders”.

The failure to put on a mask is a violation of anti-Coronavirus (COVID-19) laws enacted by government to safeguard against the spread of the pandemic in March 2020. As at December 27, 2020 despite 1015 tests done by the Ministry of Health and Child Care, active cases stand at 2135. Total recoveries at 10 593 expressed as a percentage of 13077 total cumulative cases pegs Zimbabwe’s National Recovery Rate at 81%. Fatalities stand at at 349 with Harare and Bulawayo cities being recorded as COVID-19 hot spots.

On December 24, 2020, ZRP Assistant Commissioner, Paul Nyathi warned “kombi operators (commuter bus operators)” not to cramp (sic) people in their kombis as witnessed this morning in … Harare and Bulawayo.” Paul went further to accuse commuter bus drivers of not “putting on face masks, not practising social distancing and putting four passengers at the front seat”.

He warned that “the public should not cry foul when the law takes its course.”

However, in what should embarrass Paul, a police officer travelling from Bulawayo’s Kingsdale suburb to town boarded a taxi without wearing a protective face mask as required by law. The unidentified police officer, who was loud and seemingly not in control of all his senses, did not attempt to stop other passengers who took photos of him.

The penalty payable at the police station for not wearing a mask in public is a USD6 or ZWL 500 fine at the official bank rate.

Rodrick Fayayo is a member of the Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA), which works with surbub and township residents associations among other things. Rodrick criticised the behaviour of the police officer saying that it is caused by lawlessness.

“It can be a reflection of two things, which all have dire implications for Bulawayo residents. The first is that besides proving lawlessness, the cop’s behaviour exposes passengers to the deadly COVID-19 virus. Latest reports from England, Germany, South Africa and other European countries state that the virus has a new and deadly variant,” said Rodrick of BPRA.

“People are doing what they want and no one is there to police them. So if a police officer can go around without following the protocols it becomes difficult for the ZRP to enforce the law. Police cannot apprehend anyone who is not properly dressed because it’s not a priority for them,” fumed Rodrick.

“The second thing is that there is dearth of leadership in the police force. Kukomhlambi uzelusile (Ours is a place where a flock shepherds itself). They know no one will do anything to them so they just behave in a reckless manner,” continued Rodrick.

The cop’s failure to wear a mask pours water on the strongly-worded warning given issued by Paul to commuter bus operators.

While Paul encouraged the public to “take heed of” his “warning” because “police officers have been directed to take action” it seems the ZRP needs to first crack its whip on the errant officer before whipping commuter bus operators into line.

Jacob Sibanda is a resident of North End. He was a passenger in the taxi, which was boarded by the police officer. Jacob believes that “Assistant Commisssioner Paul Nyathi must not be a hypocrite. Paul must first discipline his subordinate before ordering taxi drivers to wear face masks. We cannot have a lawless police force.”

Efforts to get a comment from Paul were fruitless as his phone rang continously without being answered.

“Khupe Cannot Suspsend Me”: Mwonzora Declares

Kadewere Unstoppable

After top-scoring with 20 goals and four assists in his debut season at French Ligue 1 side Le Havre, Tino Kadewere was, as expected, one of the most sought-after players in France.

Incredibly for the Highfield-bred striker, that campaign at Havre was marred by three injuries which kept him out of action for a while, but he still finished it with the most goals scored.

It then emerged that English Premier League sides Southampton and Crystal Palace, Scottish giants Celtic and Ligue 1 outfit Olympique Lyon, were chasing after the lanky star’s signature.

Ultimately, it was Lyon who snapped up the Zimbabwe international, paying a reported €14 million for his services.

The move was met with divergent views within the local football-loving public, as some were pleased with the prospects of seeing him play for such a big club on a big stage while others were skeptical of the possibility of him commanding a regular place.

Admittedly, even legendary former Warriors captain Benjani ‘The Undertaker’ Mwaruwari, who at some point played in the French top-flight for AJ Auxerre, was also not sure if Kadewere can play regularly in Rudi Garcia’s side.

“Tino (Kadewere) is doing very well, I have been watching him,” the former Warriors captain said. “But, I must warn that this season could be difficult for the boy, especially if Depay (Memphis) and the other top strikers at Lyon stay,” he said in September.

That has not been the case though.

Tino has, incredibly, established himself as not only a regular at Les Gones, but one of the most key members of the squad.

With seven goals and three assists to his name in the 2020/21 campaign, Kadewere has more than defied odds which were stuck against him.

To put icing on the cake, the Warriors star has formed a lethal combination in attack, alongside skipper Dutch ace Memphis Depay, and impressive Cameroonian Karl Toko Ekambi.

The trio has combined for most of Lyon’s goals this season.

That development has seen star Frenchman Moussa Dembele being dropped to the bench for the last seven league games.

The Dembele factor was also used as a reason by naysayers who doubted Kadewere’s ability to fight for a place in the Lyon side.

His highlight moment so far this season is undoubtedly his solitary strike which sank a star-studded Paris Saint Germain.

Thanks to that goal, Lyon won at the home of the defending champions for the first time since 2007.-Soccer 24

President Chamisa Donates Christmas Presents To The Needy

Tinashe Sambiri|The MDC Alliance Women’s Assembly United Kingdom South West District, through the office of President Nelson Chamisa, has donated Christmas presents to the needy in Zimbabwe.

In a statement, the MDC Alliance Women’s Assembly UK South West District accused Zanu PF of impoverishing millions of Zimbabweans.

Read statement below:

As we all know, Christmas is a time for giving those less fortunate than us.

In accordance with this tradition, the UK MDC A South West District Women’s Assembly carried out a fundraiser that saw many people in the MDC UK and Ireland as well as other well wishers donate money towards President’s Christmas Cheer Fund.

The funds raised were used to buy hampers containing basic groceries which were donated by President Chamisa to deprived families in Zimbabwe.

Let’s not forget that the reason why there are starving families is because of the Zanu government which has presided over the worst deterioration of living standards in the history of Zimbabwe.

Let’s not forget that people are starving because Zanu continues to steal money from the economy. The ruthlessness of the corruption is happening because the man who made himself President of Zimbabwe is the biggest crook and most ruthless individual to burden our people.

Zimbabweans will do so much better under a Chamisa presidency, everyone knows this.

A special thanks to everyone who donated towards this good cause and a big thank you to His Excellence Adv Nelson Chamisa and VP Lynnete Karenyi who presented the hampers on 23 December 2020 in Harare.

Christmas Day, 2020

Overcoming the yoke of oppression to give life to the citizens anti-corruption drive

Jacob Ngarivhume Convenor of the July 31st Movement – a Civil Rights Movement

25 December 2020 is Christmas day. I woke up early; way before 5.00am. My programme was hectic. My team had lined up key engagements for the day.

First, the day would start with a visit to the Kuchengetana Trust in Chitungwiza where Samantha runs an amazing feeding scheme for children and other vulnerable citizens. Our plan was to spend our day with her and appreciate what she goes through while doing such a splendid job.

But we could not afford such a luxury because Friday was a reporting day to the police. Following my violent arrest on 20 July 2020, I spent a harsh 45 days in unjust detention. I was eventually granted bail together with my compatriot Hopewell Chin’ono by the High Court. My bail conditions are unreasonably strict. Other than the fifty thousand dollars I had to pay, they seized my passport and asked me to report three times a week to Waterfalls Police Station, which I have been doing religiously for the past four months.

This, though, has become a cruel yoke. The authorities have got us where they want us; we cannot travel nor can we do meaningful work. We feel the heavy load of oppression upon our shoulders. Every year I farm at my rural home. But this year it has been impossible because of my onerous bail conditions. I could not travel home to Bikita and Chimanimani because I have to report to the police three times a week. The police station has become my second home.

My arrest was not only completely unnecessary; it was a travesty of justice.

I specifically called for peaceful anti-corruption demonstrations set for the 31st of July 2020. In my view, and in the mind of the many fellow citizens who joined me, our call was absolutely just. Zimbabwe is a blessed nation, but completely run down by corruption, among other ills. Corruption is now endemic in our nation. We could no longer just sit and wait, and do nothing. We had to act. When I called for the peaceful protests, my belief and expectation was that all Zimbabweans would embrace it, including the President.

Alas! How wrong I was. They deliberately misinterpreted my campaign against corruption as a threat to overthrow the government.

It seems clear to me, and to many other citizens, that they clamped down on the protests because their very survival depends on corruption. If corruption falls, they fall too. But when we decided to persist with our campaign, I started to receive death threats and threats of arrest. I had to become a wanderer, seldom sleeping at home, and never sleeping at the same place twice.

On 18 July 2020 I received a text message from a South African number saying that if I am lucky, they will arrest me within two days, but most likely they would kill me.

On the 20th of July I was arrested, together with my friend and compatriot Hopwell Chin’ono.

We spent 45 days in filthy cells, no functional toilets, no social distancing, and having to fight for our every right in court, including medical attention, warm food, visits, etc. That story we have shared often enough. Weeks later our great friend and fearless fighter for democracy, Job Sikhala, was also arrested and detained with us at Chikurubi Maximum Prison. While we suffered terrible moments together, we were blessed with a great opportunity to build a lasting friendship. And we did not waste that chance.

A week before Christmas, Hopewell approached the High Court and got his passport back temporarily to travel to South Africa for medical attention. Job approached the same high court and got his reporting conditions relaxed to reporting once a week. I did the same, yet they refused to relax my reporting conditions. Amazing! This level of inconsistency from the same court is hardly surprising. Such callous decisions define exactly who they are, and they don’t care one bit. Many are accused of being captured, and you can’t help but feel that it’s quite true!

On Christmas day we had agreed with my brother Job to join hands and do the reporting together. We agreed to start from Chitungwiza and then go to Hatfield and then Harare Central. Following my meeting with community activist and fearless fighter, Vongai Zimudzi, she decided to join us on this Christmas rendezvous.
My programme started with the visit to Kuchengetana Trust.

Mai Ngarivhume joined me on the trip. We were there before 7.00 am and watched them prepare porridge to feed the children. As early as 6.00 am some of the children were already queuing waiting to be served. Samantha and her family are surely doing a lot of amazing work! We realised a number of areas that need attention. And so we will go back with assistance there.

From Unit A we travelled to St Marys where I picked up my friend Job to go to the local police station to report. As I had not been to his house before, I called him to ask if he could give me directions. He simply said, “ask anyone they will tell you where I live”. We did, and we were directed accordingly! Everyone in the car commented on the great leadership of our brother. Easy accessibility is a core benchmark of good leadership!

We reported at St Marys Police Station. When we were inside the station, Job showed me trenches which the military dug inside the police station overlooking the road to Harare in preparation of the peaceful 31st July peaceful. The plan was to ‘shoot’ at whoever was going to Harare from Chitungwiza. I could not believe it. It dawned on me that this regime must actually believe its own lies. Before my arrest, they were peddling lies that we were sponsored by the Americans and that we wanted to overthrow the government. But I obviously thought that, since they knew they were lying, they could never believe their own lies.

But alas! They do. Crazy. We have to grapple with the fact that they believe that if citizens call for an end to corruption, they must be sponsored by the West. They cannot imagine that we Zimbabweans have the capacity to demand an end to corruption on our own initiative. Madness. Such is the mind of the oppressor. He conjures up threats in his own mind to create a big illusion!

We then drove to Harare Central Police where Vongai reported. We met Jim Kunaka there, arrested the previous day by the CIO and then dumped at Harare Central Police Station.

Years before Jim terrorised many citizens with the support of the ruling party, Zanu-PF. He apologised later when he was expelled from the party. Following the coup, he found himself on the other side of the isle. One can only be astounded at such a turn of events.

From Harare Central Police we went to my local police station in Waterfalls. I have become a familiar face there. The yoke of oppression is what characterises me there.

They know I come virtually every other day. My reporting form is not kept with the rest, but separately in the Officer-in-Charge’s office. This is a huge inconvenience. On some days, when I want to take the chance to travel and meet people outside Harare, I go early to the police station. But I usually find that the office is closed. Although I have challenged this arrangement, they insist the instruction is to keep my form secure so that no one ‘steals’ it. It’s crazy.

While at Waterfalls Police, Job met a policeman who was a former top security aide to the late MDC President, Morgan Tsvangirai, but who is now a full-time police officer. We ponder whether he was a member of the police force way back then. Wonders never cease when people are fighting a dictatorship!

We ended the exhausting reporting process at my house where Mrs Ngarivhume prepared some Christmas lunch for us. We settled down to hours of deep and intense discussions. We concluded that we need to prepare for a long and demanding fight to end corruption in this country. We were honest with each other: Zanu PF holds all the leavers of control to influence the judiciary, the police, CIO, the military and many other state institutions, which must be made independent. They serve at their pleasure without shame. In that case we have to be prepared to suffer the worst.

The determination of the team gave me hope and inspiration. While the regime uses every tool at their disposal, we depend on our only available tool; our inner strength derived from the righteousness of our cause! We all agreed that during this journey we will suffer the scorn and humiliation poured on us by Zanu-PF and its sympathisers.

We will suffer the shame of being falsely accused and imprisoned for crimes we did not commit. We will suffer the terror of threats on our lives and those of our loved ones.

We will suffer the agony of false reports written and shamelessly circulated about wrongs we never committed. This is the cross we have to bare for the sake of all.
Our resolve is unshakeable. Our will to fight corruption is neither dimed nor diminished. Our call for citizens to be vigilant in this fight only becomes more persistent and urgent. A better day for our nation is on the horizon. The more we are persecuted, the more determined we are to resist, stand strong, and fight.

On Monday I am back at the police station once again.

“Constructing Houses For Chiefs Is Not Sustainable”: Housing Minister

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwean government has abandoned the construction of houses for chiefs programme arguing it is not a sustainable programme.

The matter came to light last week when Chief Ephraim Chikwaka had implored the National Housing ministry to build decent houses for the traditional leaders. Said the traditional leader:

At what stage is the ministry (of Housing) in terms of constructing houses for traditional chiefs so that they can have a decent status in society?

Housing minister, Daniel Garwe, responded saying the government had observed that the construction of houses for chiefs is not a sustainable programme.

He added:

Chiefs, like every Zimbabwean, look upon the government for their welfare and upkeep, but the government does not have enough resources.

It is not sustainable due to the fact that today we have Chief Ephraim Chikwaka, we build a house for him and he passes on and another chief takes over who will also want a house constructed for him.

The government made a decision to construct traditional courts, which must be modern structures constructed within each chief’s jurisdiction.

This court will be used by chiefs for generation after generation and is a sustainable project which is the government’s position and intends to undertake.

We must understand that the government does not have resources for individuals and it will help us a lot to move forward in terms of development.

The traditional courts which are expected to have been constructed by 2021 will be for the purposes of hearing matters or disputes arising in that particular area.

Besides being paid a monthly allowance, traditional chiefs in the country have been allocated all-terrain vehicles by the government to facilitate their work in rural areas.

Since the days of the late former President Robert Mugabe, the Zanu-PF government has been showering traditional leaders with benefits and powers ranging from trucks, houses and land to the mandate to distribute food handouts in times of drought.

In return, traditional leaders played an active role as electoral ambassadors of Zanu-PF and did not object maltreatment of their subjects by forces loyal to the government during election times.

Of late, however, some traditional leaders including Chief Nhlanhla Ndiweni, have been critical of the government which they accused of infringing human rights.-dailynews

#BREAKING- “The Congress Is Going Ahead”: Mwonzora Declares As Khupe, Mudzuri Walk Out

By A Correspondent- Senator Douglas Mwonzora has declared that the MDC T congress is going ahead despite his arch contenders in the presidential race Dr Thokozani Khupe and Engineer Elias Mudzuri trashing the current voters’ roll being used at the MDC T congress.

https://youtu.be/bJ54B0I3hNU

Mwonzora revealed this in an exclusive interview with ZimEye and he said:

“The congress is going ahead.”

Mwonzora’s sentiments come after the voting process for Bulawayo province was shelved after it emerged that there was a ballot book that went missing.

There was chaos at the Harare International conference centre where the MDC T is holding its congress after prominent party people like David Tekeshe who is Manicaland Treasurer General had his name missing in the voters’ roll.

The party is currently using a supplementary voters roll with names of those missing from the main one.

This is a developing story. More details to follow…….

Congestion At Beitbridge Cleared

By A Correspondent- The Department of Home Affairs says that traffic congestion at the Beitbridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe has been cleared.

This follows reports of at least eight people having died while waiting to cross over.

Outside the border post, frustrated truck drivers also complained about having spent several days in snaking queues.

The Health Department earlier announced that it had stopped requesting 72-hour COVID-19 test results from travellers at the Beitbridge border in a bid to further ease traffic congestion.

In a statement, Home Affairs says the border is now easily accessible.

“The Musina Local Municipality provided additional holding areas which enabled vehicles going to the border to be released to travel in manageable numbers. The municipality also provided ablution facilities and water along the route from the town of Musina to the port of entry.”

Travellers are urged to continue observing traffic and immigration laws as well as health protocols in place to curb the spread of COVID-19.

Elias Mudzuri Cries Foul

By A Correspondent- One of the four candidates contesting the MDC-T presidency, Elias Mudzuri, has raised a red flag over preparations to hold the extraordinary congress (EOC), saying the party did not have enough money to fund it after US$60 000 went missing.

The congress is supposed to elect a successor to the late party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, but there was no agreement on the voters roll to be used or the venue, two days before it is held.

Later in the evening, however, government gave permission for the party to hold  the congress at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).

Mudzuri said the party had no money to hold the congress after it failed to account for US$60 000 which was advanced to the party by government under the Political Parties Finance Act. It postponed the congress to Sunday from last weekend following disagreements over the voters’ roll.

Provincial structures started verifying the voters roll on Wednesday and Mudzuri said by evening yesterday, they had not finalised, raising fears that the process might not be completed since today and tomorrow are public holidays.

In a circular to delegates, Mudzuri said the problems had been compounded by confusing messages regarding the venue.

“It is quite disturbing to note that the EOC has been thrown into confusion by a cocktail of mis-endeavours or  unfortunate circumstances,” Mudzuri said.

“There are confusing messages on the venue or venues for the congress.

“As things stand, there is no money for congress as the US$60 000 meant for the party was fraudulently moved from the party’s account without the express approval of the treasurer and the standing committee.

“The voters roll had not been finalised up to 17:30hours today (yesterday),” he said.

Mudzuri said he was trying to ensure that there was a free, fair and transparent congress in line with the tenets of democracy.

“I would like to urge all eligible delegates wishing to see the survival of this great movement we started in 1999 to achieve all its set objectives to sacrifice and ensure that they come out  to cast their votes on December 27 whatever venue is finally agreed upon.

“We should never accept corrupt and abusive behaviour that we have blamed Zanu PF for over the years. All the missing money must be recovered and accounted for without delay,” he added.

Polls were postponed last weekend after interim party leader Thokozani Khupe’s backers raised concern over alleged attempts by secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora to manipulate the roll.

But Mudzuri said the party was clear that only members of the 2014 structures would vote.

Another candidate, Morgen Komichi said the congress would be held at HICC, contrary to claims by some party members on social media that it would be decentralised.

“The EOC is on, and it will be held at a single venue at the HICC. The persons that will attend are those from the 2014 structures as they are the legitimate delegates to vote,” Komichi said.

“That has been abandoned because decentralised elections are prone to violence and they are very difficult to manage. What we want is to have the whole leadership to be there at the same venue and in the event of any problem, it can be addressed quickly,” he said.

Komichi cited the shambolic voters roll as the cause of the postponement of the congress that was set for December 19.

“We need to be careful this time around that this will not affect us anymore and so we want the leadership there. While we are candidates, we also have the responsibility as leaders to make sure that the party ensures a peaceful process,” he said.

Meanwhile, the MDC Alliance issued a statement yesterday saying its members that were in the 2014 party structures should not attend the congress, adding that it was a Zanu PF charade.

“All genuine MDC supporters that were in the MDC-T structures when our late president Morgan Tsvangirai passed on are advised to stay away from this Zanu PF charade at the HICC. For the record, Tsvangirai was constitutionally replaced by president Nelson Chamisa and before he passed on, he left president Chamisa in charge of MDC Alliance.

“Zanu PF has now booked this outfit at the HICC and has even provided it with the Zimbabwe Republic Police ‘to maintain law and order’, but in reality they are there to ensure that their project of running an opposition party in Zimbabwe succeeds,” MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende said.

He alleged that there were over 50 opposition parties in the country that were created by State agents and were being controlled by the military intelligence.

“The MDC Alliance remains one of the few opposition parties genuinely fighting for a people’s government. We must not waste time with sideshows, but remain focused on our goal of achieving a truly democratic developmental State in Zimbabwe. 2021 is

the year of people’s action using our constitutionally guaranteed rights.  We must organise ourselves and fight for a Zimbabwe that we want,” Hwende said.

JUST IN- DRAMA AT MDC T CONGRESS AS BALLOT BOOK VANISHES?

By A Correspondent- There was drama at the ongoing MDC-T congress amid revelations that Commissioner Aaron Rwodzi lost a ballot book.

According to a source privy to developments, the ballot book had ballot numbers 1000-1100.

Said the source:

“The commissioner lost the ballot book and there was chaos. An agreement was thus reached that the votes from the missing book should be nullified.”

Dr Khupe Seeks Help From Tabani Mpofu Over MDC T Presidency

“Mama Khupe Turns To ED’s Tabani Vusa Mpofu For Help”

Wild Cheers For Mwonzora At EOC

Douglas Mwonzora

MDC-T congress started at Rainbow Towers, Harare this Sunday morning with wild cheering directed at presidential hopeful and current secretary general Douglas Mwonzora.

Mwonzora’s arrival at the venue was greeted by excited cheering by supporters.

The opposition official had occasion to walk the grounds at the hotel, waving at ecstatic followers.

In some few hours, the Mwonzora was set to contest interim party leader Thokozani Khupe and top party politicians Elias Mudzuri and Morgen Komichi for president.

Except for Mwonzora whose support was visible judging by the number of followers chanting his name, the other candidates have kept a low profile.

The MDC-T extraordinary congress was ordered by the Supreme Court in March this year following a party leadership wrangle ignited by the death of founding opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai February 2018.

Speaking earlier in an interview, Mudzuri expressed confidence he would win the election, suggesting his opponents paid money to hire people to come and cheer them.

He said those chanting his opponents’ names were people who were not going to vote anyway.

“The delegates who are going to vote are quiet. They are just seated waiting for the time. These are just campaigning for their candidate,” Mudzuri said.

“I am best candidate to win and I’m confident.”

Mwonzora, on his part, also said expressed confidence he was winning but accused opponents of waging a smear campaign linking him to the embezzlement of party funds.

He denied the claims.

Mwonzora said if he won the party presidency, he was going to work with both Zanu-PF and his former allies in MDC Alliance to improve the lives of all Zimbabweans.

He added, “We are happy that the MDC Alliance has not sought to disturb our congress. It’s a plus on their part.”

Meanwhile, congress delegate Isabel Mwonzora was unequivocal in claims her father was best suited for the MDC-T top job.

“Mwonzora is the only one who can fit into Morgan Tsvangirai’s shoes. He has delivered the constitution in 2013, he has brought back Harvest House to the party, he has also delivered on the finances from government under the Political Finance Act,” Isabel said.

“Zimbabwe is for everyone. We must be able to tolerate each other regardless of political differences. We expect him (Mwonzora) to work with Zanu-PF for the good of the country.

“Mwonzora will also make sure that we will go to the 2023 elections in a fair environment. Mwonzora will fight military chiefs in the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to institute reforms for fair elections. Come 2023, Mwonzora will go to state house.”

Drivers, Motorists Stuck At Beitbridge

By A Correspondent- Several truck drivers and other motorists have described as a nightmare, their experience at Beitbridge Border Post where they spent Christmas after getting stuck for days on the South African side of the continent’s busiest point of entry.

Owing to the rigorous Covid-19 screening on the South African side, there was traffic build-up which stretched more than 10 kilometres.
For days on end, the truckers, as well as other private vehicles, were stuck in the queue with reports that around 15 people died allegedly from exhaustion, dehydration and heat stroke. Speaking from Beitbridge, a trucker for a Zimbabwean-based logistics company said the nightmare had been so bad that many passed out while seated in their vehicles.

“I arrived in Musina four days before Christmas and the situation was bad. I had been alerted about the jam, but did not expect it to be so bad,” Saidi Limbe, a 47-year-old trucker said.

Limbe is of Malawian descent but was born in Zimbabwe. He says he has been driving trucks along the Beitbridge route, but he has never witnessed such congestion.

“We ran out of food and water, and it was very hard to cope in the afternoon in searing heat. I rationed my water and at least I had a bit to carry me through,” he said.

The few swigs of the precious liquid ensured that Limbe did not pass out.

“I needed to stay awake because robbers were pouncing on us. It was mostly smash-and-grab.”

The South African side had to deploy soldiers on Thursday to ease the situation which was fast escalating.

an official at the Zimbabwe border said it had all been happening on the South African side.

“They deployed the army because there was a huge traffic jam from Musina to the border and they couldn’t untangle the traffic so that it could then cross over to Zimbabwe.

“The army went in and sorted the matter and we have now started receiving massive volumes of lighter vehicles into Zimbabwe. We are coping on the ground, but we are under pressure,” the official, who preferred not to be named, said.

The official said the deaths of some people at the border may have triggered the response by border authorities.

The South African media has been reporting on the crisis showing footage of desperate people including babies strewn along the road.

Besides lack of water, there were no toilets and many relieved themselves right where they were parked, thus raising fears of diseases like typhoid and dysentery.

South African officials have hinted that they doubted if Zimbabwe had the manpower to handle the large quantities of travellers.

“A lot of buses are already cleared, passengers are already cleared and they are waiting for transiting into Zimbabwe and so we have a problem there as well,” a South African border official said.

Meanwhile, the jam raised serious concerns over the new Covid-19 strain which has been reported in South Africa and the United Kingdom.

In fear that the border chaos might fuel the spread of Covid-19 after 15 people, four of whom are haulage truck drivers, reportedly died at the border queues, the South African government yesterday suspended all coronavirus screening on haulage truck drivers to try and ease the congestion.

The validity of Covid-19 certificates for truck drivers in the neighbouring country has also been extended from 72 hours to 30 days after it was noted that it was taking more than five days to cross the border.

A letter by the South African Home affairs ministry director of general health Sandile Buthelezi, which was seen by The Standard, said that they had given the nod to waiver the screening of drivers.

“The validity period for tests for truck drivers has been increased to 30 days in our revised direction to minimise inconvenience,” Buthelezi said in the letter.

The congestion at Beitbridge has also affected the lives of more than 60 000 people in Beitbridge town.

Town clerk Loud Ramagkapola said business in Beitbridge had been disrupted.

“Truck congestion has disturbed the normal flow of traffic and business in the town. We have seen lots of littering and open defecation. Post the congestion, we have a lot of cleaning up to do.

Apart from fear of Covid-19 and other diseases, there will be a lot of damage to our roads,” Ramagkapola said.

South Africa right now is affected by the new strain of Covid-19. researchers in Britain say the new strain of Covid-19 is more infectious (71% more transmissible) and it mostly affects younger people.

The new variant of the novel coronavirus has ravaged parts of Britain prompting more than 40 countries to ban travellers from Britain.

In Zimbabwe, concerns have also been raised especially with the background of rampant illegal crossing of immigrants from South Africa.

However, the chief coordinator for the Covid-19 National response Agnes Mahomva said there was no need to panic.

“There is really no need to panic because nothing has changed in terms of our response to Covid-19. We still need to observe the World Health Organisation regulations of sanitising, practicing social distancing and limiting unnecessary gatherings. These are super spreaders of the disease,” Mahomva said.

She said people must remain vigilant and not be complacent. Mahomva said many people were no longer wearing masks or maintaining social distancing.

On border preparedness, she said: “But really we should also be responsible because we hear that some people are buying fake Covid-19 certificates and officials are taking bribes.”

Portia Manangazira, the director of epidemiology and Disease Control at the Health ministry, said people should limit movement.

“Children from schools which reported cases of Covid-19 should be kept in isolation at home to make sure the disease is not spread further. The new strain is more virulent and we need to observe the regulations. Stop being complacent and irresponsible,” she warned.

Zimbabwe has been recording a sharp rise of Covid-19 cases with two people dying on Christmas holidays.

Prominent journalist and Zimbabwe Union of Journalists secretary-general Foster Dongozi succumbed to Covid-19 last Wednesday and was buried at his rural home in Sanyati yesterday.

Information ministry permanent secretary Nick Mangwana has since urged all journalists and professionals who were in contact with Dongozi to present themselves for testing.

Tragedy As Lighting Strikes 15 Cattle On Christmas Day

By A Correspondent- A 36 year old Beatrice farmer was on Christmas Day left counting his losses after a bolt of lightning struck and killed his 15 cattle.

Mashonaland East provincial police spokesperson Inspector Tendai Mwanza confirmed the incident, saying that the owner of the beasts, Obert Karombe had since notified the police about the disaster.

It is reported that, on the day, at around 4am, Karombe’s cattle, which consisted of seven cows, three heifers, a steer and four calves, were in the paddock at his farm.
A bolt of lightning struck them all dead. Karombe then disposed of the beasts by burying them.

The value of the cattle is said to be ZWl560 000.-

ZBC Evicts Former Employees On Christmas Day

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC) evicted its former employees from company accommodation at flats in the Avenues area of Harare on Christmas Day.

At least four families, including two which are headed by widows, were evicted from Hatley House flats along Josiah Tongogara Avenue. Children, the youngest who is seven months old, as well as young girls and boys were among those that were left out in the open.

Gender activist groups in Harare have since taken up the matter and moved swiftly to assist the affected women and children.

Thandolwenkosi Makubaza, the programmes development and fundraising manager of Padare Enkundleni Men’s Forum on Gender, yesterday confirmed that the women and children were taken to Musasa Project for assistance since it was raining.

“Yesterday on December 25 I was visiting my aunt along Josiah Tongogara Avenue, across Hatley House flats owned by ZBC. I then saw about four families that had been thrown out in the open near the road with all their property and children and it was raining,” Makubaza said.

“Many of them were women and children, and one of the women had a seven-month-old baby. When I approached them, I saw three ladies, two of them widows, and one married woman who had a baby strapped on her back. They said they had just been thrown out of the flats because their tenancy had expired as they were no longer employees of the ZBC.”

She said the women told her that the process of trying to evict them began in 2015. They also claimed that ZBC still owed them a lot of money which was part of the reason why they continued to stay at the flats.

“They said ZBC decided to throw them out on Christmas Day, dumping them onto the streets on a rainy day. As a gender activist and a women rights activist, I was affected by this kind of treatment especially on vulnerable women and children.

“The fact that these are widows and there were children, including a seven month-old baby that were sleeping under plastic covers at a time when there is Covid-19 and dysentery unsettled me. It was difficult to turn my back on them,” Makubaza said.

She then initiated a process of getting temporary shelter for them at Musasa Project.

“I approached a number of organisations that we work with and Musasa Project fortunately took up the case and ran around to ensure the children and their mothers have shelter. A passer-by, Chris Jimu of Heylinks, also stopped to try and find out what was happening and he offered to assist,” she said.

“He packed their property into his truck and took it to his warehouse for safekeeping as the company is currently on holiday. He also volunteered to take the woman who has a seven-month-old baby and her husband to his house.”

Makubaza said the women would receive counselling at Musasa Project. However, the centre was unable to take in the boys and young men over 12 years as it is a shelter for women.

“We found a well-wisher who took in two boys. The Women in Law in Southern Africa (WILSA) is now looking at the legal issues pertaining to their case,” she said.

Efforts to get a comment from the Musasa Project director Sharon Matingwina were fruitless as she was not picking her phone.

ZBC spokesperson Rumbidzayi Moyo confirmed the evictions.

“This issue has been at the courts since 2015. However, all tenants were requested to vacate Hatley House after it was condemned by the City of Harare. There have been no existing tenancy agreements between ZBC and any tenant at Hatley House since then. The matter has been to the High Court,” Moyo said.-standard

Chamisa “Eyes” One Million First Time Voters

By A Correspondent- The MDC Alliance provincial youth assembly has been given a task of recruiting 12% of the targeted one million new first-time voters as the party forges ahead with its recruitment drive in a campaign dubbed #OneMillionVotes.

The MDC Alliance youth assembly in November launched a voter registration campaign in Bulawayo targeting one million first-time voters, particularly the youth, to guarantee a crushing victory against the Zanu-PF candidate President Emmerson Mnangagwa in any upcoming elections.

Government has suspended the holding of elections citing Covid-19 restrictions, but the main opposition party said it did not want to be caught unawares when the suspension is lifted.

Voter registration, however, is not suspended. MDC Alliance youth secretary-general Gift Ostallos Siziba said Bulawayo had been given a target of recruiting 12% of the one million first-time voters.

“The second capital of our motherland, Bulawayo, has been given a task to recruit 12% of our total target. It’s a new wave of generational transformation, ideological clarity and class consciousness,” Siziba said.

“New recruits are the cream of our struggle for change.”

In 2018, the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) said 60% of registered voters for that year’s general elections were 40 years and below, meaning that the youth vote will play a decisive role in the 2023 poll outcomes.

However, research shows that participation by the youth has been low amid calls to create political, structural and physical spaces that allow for their meaningful participation.

According to analysts, this could include allocating quotas among other initiatives to young people and prioritising youth empowerment.

In August, the Community Youth Development Trust (CYDT ) petitioned Parliament protesting over lack of youth representation from the district up to the national level as they demanded a 30% quota.

The CYDT in their petition argued that they approached Parliament to ensure that the rights of the youth are constitutionally guaranteed.-standard

Tables Turn For Mwonzora

By A Correspondent- Aspiring MDC-T leader Douglas Mwonzora was yesterday exposed by one of his top allies who described him as “a deceitful and crooked trickster” as the fight for the presidency reaches a chaotic climax ahead of the party’s extraordinary congress expected today.

Partson Murimoga, who was behind the first lawsuit challenging the late MDC founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai’s appointment of Nelson Chamisa and Elias Mudzuri as his co-deputies alongside Thokozani Khupe in 2016, claimed that Mwonzora was behind the court action.

Murimoga lost the lawsuit after the High Court ruled that he was not qualified to challenge Tsvangirai’s appointments. But a year later, party activist Elias Mashavira used the same arguments to successfully challenge Chamisa and Mudzuri’s appointments at the same court.

In March this year, the Supreme Court rejected an appeal by Chamisa’s MDC Alliance and went on to reinstate Khupe as the MDC-T leader before ordering an extraordinary congress to elect Tsvangirai’s successor.

After the ruling, Mwonzora, who was the party’s lawyer in defending Murimoga’s case, abandoned the MDC Alliance to side with Khupe. The two have been using the Supreme Court judgement to launch a vicious onslaught against Chamisa and his camp, including recalling the party’s legislators and councillors from their seats.

The stunning Murimoga revelations shed new light on the tussle for the control of the country’s main opposition party and will raise fresh questions about Mwonzora’s character, even as he claims that winning the MDC-T presidency would be part of his agenda to restore Tsvangirai’s legacy.

Murimoga told The Standard that he had decided to speak out because the runup to the congress had revealed Mwonzora’s true colours. He said he was afraid that the opposition party would fall into wrong hands.

He claimed the MDC-T secretary-general, whom he described as a “cunning and dishonest politician”, had squandered party funds, adding that this was making it difficult for the party to hold a credible congress today.

Murimoga said Mwonzora was not happy after Tsvangirai elevated Chamisa ahead of him despite the fact that he had beaten the former ICT minister for the post of secretary-general at the 2014 congress.

“I was sent by Mwonzora to make the court application,” he said. “I believed in constitutionalism and I agreed. Mwonzora could not do the application because of his position. We used Zivanai Macharaga as our lawyer.

“He asked me to do it. As you know, I was very close to him. I was his campaign manager in 2014 when he beat Chamisa.

“I also composed his campaign song and we jointly composed two albums that include the popular Tsikamutanda track. I campaigned for him then, but now I don’t have anything good I can tell the people about him.”

Murimoga said he had learnt the hard way that Mwonzora was a sly politician, who could not be trusted with the party’s finances as he had failed to pay back some monies that he borrowed from him over the years.

“We were very close to each other, but I have realised that Mwonzora is not honest. He is a crook who doesn’t honour promises and he is too scandal-ridden,” he charged.

“He is bad at managing finances. In 2016, he drove to Bulawayo to borrow US$2 000 to avoid arrest after abusing trust funds; he has not paid back the money up to now.

“He even fails to manage his law firm. He drove to come and borrow US$300 from me to renew the licence for his legal firm and I struggled to recover the money. He was no longer picking my calls and I had to use one MP’s mobile number.”

Murimoga said he was not supporting any of the candidates gunning for the MDC-T presidency today, who include Elias Mudzuri and Morgen Komichi, but he reserved most of the criticism for Mwonzora.

“I don’t support either Khupe or Mwonzora as I stand for the constitution,” he said.

“I don’t hate Mwonzora, but what I saw in him does not inspire confidence; he can’t be a leader. If he is made to head a burial society, not a single corpse will be buried.

“His life is a mess and he can’t surely be a leader. I worked with him. At the moment, Mwonzora is staying at a hotel and it’s possible that he is using the party monies that he is failing to account for.”

In the run-up to the congress that has been postponed twice since the Supreme Court ruling, Mwonzora has been accused by his rivals of squandering US$60 000 in party finances.

The MDC-T got the money from the government under controversial circumstances as the MDC Alliance insists that it is entitled to the funds under the Political Parties Finance Act being the party that sponsored legislators in Parliament.

But Mwonzora rubbished the allegations, telling The Standard that the accusations that he abused party finances were part of mudslinging by his rivals ahead of the congress.

“The (claims) are just false and malicious,” he said. “It’s part of the mudslinging that has characterised this congress. How on earth can one person withdraw money from the (party) account?

“These falsehoods are being peddled by people who are afraid of losing at congress. The good thing is that MDC-T people see through this rubbish.”

MDC-T acting spokesperson Tapiwa Mashakada said the congress was going ahead as planned and once again dispelled claims that party finances had been abused.

Chief Ndlovu, the party’s deputy treasurer, accused Mwonzora’s camp of squandering money meant for transport for congress delegates. He said the party’s coffers had been milked dry.

Mudzuri last week also said the congress was being threatened by the abuse of party funds.

“ED Is Worse”: Sikhala

By A Correspondent- MDC Alliance vice-chairperson Job Sikhala has said President Emmerson Mnangagwa has proved to be one of the worst authoritarian leaders to ever lead Zimbabwe, an accusation that comes as the nation next month marks the second anniversary of the bloody fuel price protests which were violently quashed by the military.

An estimated 17 civilians were shot dead, and several others were left nursing injuries in the crackdown against citizens demonstrating against an over 150% hike in fuel prices.

Sikhala told the Standard in an interview yesterday that citizens must commemorate the January killings in honour of the deceased victims.

“January is a month which we must commemorate as the month in which citizen’s rights were grossly violated by the Mnangagwa regime, through dragnet arrests that were carried out between January 14 to 17, 2019. I personally represented hundreds of victims of this sad period at Chitungwiza magistrates courts,” Sikhala said.

Kadewere Takes French League By Storm

President Chamisa Rescues Suffering Zimbabweans

Ngarivhume Receives Death Threats For Denouncing Corruption

Four Family Members Perish in Road Accident On Christmas Day

FIVE people, including four members of the same family died in an accident while seven others were seriously injured when a Toyota D4D collided head-on with a Zupco kombi near Josiah Tungamirai Airbase in Gweru on Christmas Day.

The accident occurred at around 6am when the Toyota D4D which was coming from Mvuma with 11 people on board collided head on with the Zupco kombi which was coming from Gweru Central Business District (CBD) with two people on board.

A police officer said on approaching the Josiah Tungamirai Airbase, the driver of the Toyota D4D lost control of the vehicle and it swerved to the right, encroaching onto the right lane ahead of an oncoming commuter omnibus resulting in the head-on collision.

The police officer said three people, a conductor from the kombi and two passengers in the Toyota D4D died on the spot while two other passengers died at Gweru Provincial Hospital.

“The accident occurred at around 6am when a Toyota D4D which was going towards Gweru CBD collided with a commuter omnibus which was driving towards Mvuma. It is suspected that the driver of the Toyota D4D lost control of the vehicle and swerved to the right. He encroached onto the right lane ahead of an oncoming commuter omnibus and the two vehicles collided head on.

Three people died on the spot while two others died at Gweru Provincial Hospital where they were receiving treatment. Seven other passengers were also injured and are receiving treatment at Gweru Provincial Hospital,” said the source.

Of the five victims, the source said four were from the same family.

“The four who died from the Toyota D4D are members of the same family. They included a woman and her two children and their sister-in-law. Ironically the sister-in-law had just been involved in an accident in Manicaland and they were coming from the scene,” said the source.

Salaries Equivalent to Dollarisation Period For Civil Servants?

THE Government has given the National Joint Negotiating Council (NJNC) the task of coming up with a roadmap that would enable Government to have a salary structure for civil servants equivalent to the dollarisation period amid revelations that it has also honoured its commitment to pay bonuses to all its workers before Christmas Day.

Civil Servants were awarded a salary increase in November after successful engagements with NJNC and all teachers received their salaries after taking heed of Government’s advice to return to work or risk losing their wages.

NJNC is in the process of drafting a salary roadmap that would see Government being able to pay civil servants salaries equivalent to the salary structure of the dollarisation period where they were paid US$500 on average.

Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Professor Paul Mavima told Sunday News that all teachers received their salaries after complying with the Government directive.

Prof Mavima said Government had given NJNC up to 31 January to come up with a salary roadmap that would enable the Government to gradually review civil servants’ salaries.

He said all civil servants had received their bonuses before Christmas day as promised by the Government.

“Everyone (all civil servants) has received bonuses. No one was not paid and all teachers got their salaries. The National Joint Negotiating Council is in the process of developing a roadmap for reviewing salaries in 2021. The roadmap is supposed to be done by 31 January. We have a winning formula going forward,” he said.

Prof Mavima said the Government was having fruitful engagements with workers and it was necessary to avoid antagonism.

“It is necessary to avoid too much antagonism,” he said.

This comes as civil servants have decried what they described as serious infiltration by minority unions linked to opposition parties which they say are forcing some workers to engage in go-slows and strikes to frustrate Government’s engagement efforts.

The Government workers said as much as they are enjoying the Second Republic’s stance on dialogue—there are some unionists who are throwing spanners into the whole initiative.

Mwonzora Responds to ‘Malicious and False’ Accusations of Misappropriation Of Party Funds

By Douglas Mwonzora| Yesterday the Acting Deputy Treasurer General wrote a letter to all EOC delegates were he made serious accusations against me. The accusations are false and malicious and were calculated to affect my chances at the Congress. They were also calculated to cause my arrest and detention just before Congress. This was planned with one Murimoga who was instructed to make a false report to the Police and SACU. The Treasurer General is currently out of the country. The correct position regarding the party finances is as follows:

  1. The Party received ZWL 7.9 million around June 2020. Of this amount a total of ZWL 3.5 million was set aside for congress. This translated into USD $35 000 and was put in the custody of the Acting Treasurer General.
  2. The party then received another ZWL $14.9 million as part of the government grant. The Finance and Administration Committee chaired by the Secretary General sat and resolved on how this money was to be spent. Specifically it set aside money for Congress. Its recommendations were adopted by the Standing Committee chaired by the Acting President. Mr Chief Ndlovu sat and actively participated in both the meetings of the Finance and Administration Committee and the Standing Committee meetings.
  3. Unfortunately on the 19th of December 2020, the Extraordinary Congress was postponed. However, some delegates had already travelled but their travel expenses had to be paid still.
  4. The National Standing Committee then sat and reviewed the party’s financial position. It unanimously agreed that the money for Congress was no longer enough. The President, National Chairman and the Secretary General were then tasked to raise some more resources for Congress to deal with the transportation of the delegates of congress.
  5. The Standing Committee also received a breakdown of all the expenses incurred to date including preparation of the voter’s roll and ballot papers etc.

South Africa Scraps Mandatory Covid-19 Results at Beitbridge to Ease Congestion

Delays associated with accessing COVID-19 tests at a mobile laboratory inside the border post was cited as reasons for snaking queues of trucks outside the port of entry.

The Health Department has stopped requesting 72-hour COVID-19 test results from travellers leaving the country through the Beitbridge border post in Musina, Limpopo.

Delays associated with accessing COVID-19 tests at a mobile laboratory inside the border post was cited as reasons for snaking queues of trucks outside the port of entry.

At least eight people are said to have died while queuing.

Health MEC Dr Phophi Ramathuba says they will instead be strengthening their screening services.

“We used to demand the 72-hour results but because people have heard that as government we have put a mobile laboratory at the port health, which test you in case you don’t have those results or in case they have expired. But now people would abuse the system, they would drive from Cape Town going to neighbouring countries without the results hoping they would be tested there. So what we have decided; we will remain with the screening there,” she says.

Limpopo reported its highest number of new infections in one day, with over 600 recorded in the last 24 hour window.

Let’s Finalise Political Reforms In 2021, Madhuku Tells Mnangagwa

By A Correspondent| National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader, Professor Lovemore Madhuku has urged government to finalise the implementation of political reforms being driven through the POLAD platform so that no one complains of an uneven political field come 2023.

Madhuku made the remarks in an interview with The Sunday Mail where he said political reforms should anchor economic reforms government is putting in place.

“In 2021, we must achieve all the necessary electoral and political reforms under the Polad platform,” said Prof Madhuku

“We want to see the strengthening of Polad in order to achieve the political reforms because come the year 2023, we do not want to see anyone complaining about the playing field.

“We want these political reforms to anchor the economic reforms that are currently being implemented.” said Madhuku.

Ngarivhume: Overcoming the yoke of oppression to give life to the citizens anti-corruption drive

Christmas Day, 2020

Jacob Ngarivhume Convenor of the July 31st Movement – a Civil Rights Movement

25 December 2020 is Christmas day. I woke up early; way before 5.00am. My programme was hectic. My team had lined up key engagements for the day.

First, the day would start with a visit to the Kuchengetana Trust in Chitungwiza where Samantha runs an amazing feeding scheme for children and other vulnerable citizens. Our plan was to spend our day with her and appreciate what she goes through while doing such a splendid job.

But we could afford such a luxury because Friday was a reporting day to the police.

PICTURES: Incessant Rains Destroy Houses in Chipinge

The current wet spell prevailing across the country has already started destroying houses in Chipinge amid concerns that the impending cyclone Chalane will have devastating effects on low lying areas whose soil is already weakened by excessive moisture.

Chipinge had a wet Christmas with water bodies such as rivers and local dams already full to capacity, something that is already worrying local people ahead of the tropical cyclone estimated to arrive in Zimbabwe on the 31st of December.

Finally, Beitbridge Congestion Cleared

Home Affairs Director of Ports of Entry Stephen Van Neel has requested that truck drivers preparing to travel towards the Beitbridge Border post consider using other ports of entry during the festive season.

This comes as hundreds of truck drivers remain stuck in queues, stretching as long as ten kilometres.

Over ten people are confirmed to have died at the border in Musina, Limpopo in the period starting December the 14th. Van Neel says border officials are working towards clearing the backlog of trucks that have been stuck for several days.

“We have to see whether we can push transport to other ports. If we could be able to speak to the transport sector and truckers we would like to ask them to maybe use other ports of entry and offload some of the pressure on Beitbridge.”

On Christmas Day, SABC News reporter Pimani Baloyi and Cameraman Hulisani Livhebe were taken on an exclusive tour of the port of entry.

They found only one traveller being processed inside the immigration office, with over 10 officials ready to process more. A further walk into the facility revealed sedans as well as bakkies, taxis and buses queuing to exit South Africa after being cleared. Officials say there seems to be a challenge with Zimbabwe’s capacity to accept large quantities of travellers.

Neel said: “A second dependency is also that what is it that Zimbabwe can receive and as we can see here now that there are a lot of busses are already cleared, passengers are already cleared and they waiting for transiting into Zimbabwe so we have a problem there as well.”

Some commuters and light vehicle motorists were hopeful that they will spend the remainder of Christmas with their families after they were cleared speedily.

“It wasn’t really that bad just starting from today and also the papers, we were cleared very fast but the only problem that is hindering us right now is the trucks over there,” said one.

“For me, I don’t want to lie because I just arrived, I think it is only two hours now and I’m going to the Zim side. I think for now I have done everything my bus is already cleared and they have stamped the passports. I am now going to Zim side now,” added another traveller.

Outside the border post though, truck drivers remain frustrated as they remain stuck in snaking queues.

“It’s four days now still on the road and where I am now and the border is about 5 kilometres. So I think I will take another four days to reach the border, I don’t know what to do and I have got groceries and presents for my kids and I don’t know what to do worth the groceries and it’s hot here,” one told the SABC News crew.

“I was hoping to spend Christmas with my family but we are now waiting here, it;s four days now,” added another.

Zanu PF’s Visceral Brain Teaser: Pay Teachers A Living Wage Without Fueling Inflation

By Wilbert Mukori | Squaring the circle is a brain teaser as ancient as geometry itself in which one is asked to construct a square with the same area as a given circle or vice versa.

Let us just say Emmerson Mnangagwa and his Minister of Finance have set themselves a visceral challenge of paying the civil servants; especially the teachers and health workers who are already on starvation wages of US$50 p.m. vs a PDL of US$ 650 p.m; without fueling inflation, which is already 848% p.a.! It should be noted here that the two have maintained that Zimbabwe is on course to become an upper middle income nation by 2030 – the so called vision 2030.

indepth...Wilbert Mukori
indepth…Wilbert Mukori

Both Mnangagwa and his minister have said achieving vision 2030 will require great sacrifices. This is a visceral challenge, to these two reason and logic count for nothing; but still, surely the teachers and the health workers are not to be sacrificial lambs of vision 2030!

“Government must mellow down to a more constructive approach permeable to reason and facts rather than believing a casus belli (an excuse) proffered by Apex Council in which they see opposition politics in genuine labour issues,” complained Takavafira Zhou, president of Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ).

“Positive criticism nourishes leadership while self-pollination stifles debate, is parochial and weakens the ultimate output. Lies have short legs and capital and labour are strange bed fellows.

“The moment labour leaders whip members to accept hogwash and starvation salaries, such leaders would have stopped to represent workers and must be jettisoned from leadership.”

Mr Zhou was talking of jettisoning Apex Council leaders but, if truth should be said, it is the Zanu PF government leaders whom the nation should have jettisoned decades ago for stifled debate and democratic competition.

Zanu PF fostered the 1983 to 1987 Gukurahundi massacre on the nation which only ended with the signing of the Unity Accord with PF Zapu and imposition of the de facto one-party dictatorship. The Accord, Mugabe maintained, would bring national unity and economic development.

Zimbabwe’s economy has been in decline for the last 40 years precisely because the nation was stuck for all these years with a corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical dictatorship that rigged elections to stay in power.

National unity was but an excuse for stifling debate and democratic competition. Unity morphed into to conformity, into uniformity and, spuriously, ending up with brainwashed and brain-dead electorate incapable of even one coherent thought much less hold the regime to democratic account on anything.

It is little wonder the country’s opposition political leaders have turned out to be corrupt and incompetent, a brain-dead electorate cannot be expected to come up with a quality opposition.

With no quality electorate and/or opposition to hold Zanu PF leaders to democratic account and competition, it is no wonder Mnangagwa and his fellow Zanu PF thugs have too become brain-dead, with minds impermeable to reason and facts.

The solution to the geometry brain teaser:

w (width of square) = Square root (22/7) X r (radius of circle).

One does not need even basic economic, just common sense, to know:

  • Cannot pay civil servants a living wage without first reviving the comatose economy, the economic meltdown is getting worse
  • Cannot pay civil servants a wage increase (never mind a living wage) with first reviving the economic meltdown and not fuel inflation, inflation is already 848% p.a. and rising
  • Cannot revive the economy as long as Zimbabwe remains a pariah state, a dictatorship, ruled by corrupt, incompetent and vote rigging thugs who have proven beyond all doubt that they are braindead.
  • Decades of poor funding have left schools and health care services poorly resourced these services have all but completely collapse. Reviving the comatose economy is tough but it is even tougher with a whole generation of ill-educated and sickly citizens. As for vision 2030, that is just a midnight mirage for the naive and gullible!

After 40 years of gross mismanagement, rampant corruption, rank lawlessness, over 30 000 murdered for selfish political gain and the country in total economic ruins and despair – proof we have a braindead Zanu PF regime. It is shocking that there are still people hankering for the braindead regime to mellow down and pay them a living wage!!!!

“Government must mellow down to a more constructive approach permeable to reason and facts!” Insane!

In the long run, nations get the government they deserve; we in Zimbabwe certainly deserve this braindead Zanu PF dictatorship.

When the penny finally drops and we finally wakeup to the reality that one does not get blood from a stone; we will demand the implementation of democratic reforms and finally end the curse of rigged elections and bad governance.

Zimbabweans’ laissez-faire attitude to the important business of electing competent leaders shows we are not yet ready for good government. Until then Comrade Zhou and his fellow civil servant can continue demanding a living wages from this Zanu PF regime; why not, it is they own visceral brain teaser!

“Mwonzora Is The Only Candidate To Fit Into Tsvangirai’s Shoes”: FACT OR UTTER NONSENSE?

By A Correspondent- MDC-T Congress delegate Isabel Mwonzora was unequivocal in claims her father was best suited for the MDC-T top job.

Mnangagwa Openly Reveals Another Military Coup Which Toppled President Chamisa……..

Soldiers attacking civilians on 1 Aug 2020 – file

“But as Govt we are not waiting for elections, we sat down and decided that the cities belong to us, Zanu-PF.

Emmerson Mnangagwa

By A Correspondent | As the year 2020 shuts down this week, the pages of history were flashed open during the week when the ZANU PF coupist, Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa unashamedly confessed to rigging the 2018 elections.

Mnangagwa announced that government has passed a decision that the cities are owned by his party, ZANU PF, after all.

This is despite the millions of votes that were passed in favour of Nelson Chamisa’s MDC Alliance party during the 2018 elections.

The development is the latest clearest legal evidence of Mr Mnangagwa personally rigging the 2018 elections to favour his ZANU PF party. Nelson Chamisa was removed in a military coup carried out on 1 Aug 2018, as evidence presented before the Motlanthe Commission reveals of the military level plan earlier announced by Mnangagwa’s office on the 15th December 2017.

A SADC level Supreme Court review passed this year, ruled that Mr Mnangagwa’s election victory is not credible, strengthening Mr Chamisa’s ongoing legal challenge against Mnangagwa.

Mr Mnangagwa’s announcement during the week follows several acts of sabotage by the government in the cities that have seen a trail of demolitions of properties to allegedly punish residents for voting MDC Alliance. The government has openly blamed the MDC Alliance party for the systemic failures, although Mr Mnangagwa is seen in another video recording (file copy from the Mugabe days) clearly instructing his juniors that all council operations by the MDC Alliance must be blocked (video).

https://twitter.com/ZimEye/status/1317123316268806144?s=19

This time speaking during a dangerously crowded rally in Chivi, Mr Mnangagwa announced (in full):

“MDC Councils have failed. They have failed. I think when we hold the next elections, we’ll put ZANU PF councils in the cities.

“But as government we are not waiting for elections, we sat down and decided that the cities belong to us, Zanu-pf.

“So we are on a plan to fix our cities, because the MDC Councils have done what? They have failed.

“We’ll fix them on our own so that things work well for us (ZANU PF). VIDEO:

WHAT SHOULD CHAMISA DO NOW, SEEING THIS CLEAR EVIDENCE OF A CRIME?

“Stay Away From Khupe Congress”

All Genuine MDC Supporters that were in the MDC T Structures when our Late President Dr Tsvangirai passed on are advised to stay away from this Zanu-PF Charade at the HICC.

For the record President Tsvangirai was Constitutionally replaced by President Nelson Chamisa and before he passed on he left President Chamisa in charge of the Party and the MDC Alliance.

Zanu-PF has now booked this outfit at the HICC and has even provided them with ZRP “to maintain Law and Order” but in reality they are there to ensure that their project of running an opposition Party in Zimbabwe succeeds.

We are not worried as there are over 50 opposition parties in Zimbabwe and a good number were created by CIO and are now controlled by the Military Intelligence.

The MDC Alliance remains one of the few opposition parties genuinely fighting for a People’s Government. We must not waste time with side shows but remain focused on our goal of achieving a truly Democratic Developmental State in Zimbabwe.

2021 is the year of People’s Action using our Constitutionally guaranteed rights we must organize ourselves and fight for a Zimbabwe we want. Many people think the current onslaught by Munangagwa is on Chamisa and the MDC Alliance. That is not correct Democracy and the People’s right to be governed by a Leader of their Choice under attack and we must all defend and resist…

Floods Hit Chipinge And Chimanimani

As the state media reports of floods in Chipinge, villagers in Chimanimani tell ZimEye of heavy rains running for a whole week running into Christmas day. .

Mwacheta village in Chief Musikavanhu area, Chipinge, received heavy rains from the eve of Christmas up to Christmas Day with the result that houses were destroyed and food items including hens were swept away leaving the villagers in a quandary of huge proportions.

Eyewitnesses say the rains started on 24 December and continued up to Christmas Day at 1600 hours. The situation was compounded by the flooded Nyamukungwa River whose origins are in the upper part of Chipinge in the Chikore area.

Because of that, the flooded river gushed into people’s homes wreaking havoc on the social and economic lives of the people.

Ward 16 Ccouncillor, Mr Raphias Mapahla Sithole, said: ‘’It began raining on Thursday at five minute intervals for the whole night; we woke up on Christmas Day to witness a relentless pounding of our houses. It only stopped at about 4pm.’’

‘’Nyamukungwa River at Mwacheta turn off flooded and it went straight to people’s homes which could not withstand the pressure. Previously, Greenfuel had provided a grader to divert the waters into the fields once a flood occurs.’’

The Chairperson of Kanyi Redu Development Association, a community development oriented grouping of people whose origin is Chipinge, Mr Sinoten Damascus Chabarirwa, said his group wishes to join hands with the Civil Protection Unit and other agencies in combating and mitigating the effects of the flooding.

‘’We will join hands in fighting the consequences of the flooding. As KREDA, we will be putting foot soldiers to spread awareness campaigns on the dangers of flash floods and the need to go to higher ground with the impending landfall of yet another cyclone. However, we believe that moving people permanently to higher ground is a long term solution and the construction of dams wherever possible to ebb out severe floods and instead have a greenbelt could be a boon for the local people,’’ said Chibarirwa.

Some of the families whose houses were affected are: Chimana, Zinhuku, Semwayo and Machini.

The Member of Parliament for Chipinge West, Mr Sibonile Nyamudeza, said he had consulted the Civil Protection Unit in order to map the way forward in view of the human disaster unfolding.

‘’The rain may have subsided for now but I have already contacted the Civil Protection Unit to see how best we can help these families whose livelihoods have been destroyed and right now, the children and the aged are in trouble with the elements,’’ he said.

The rains which have left a trail of destruction in their wake come against the background of Cyclone Chalene landfall on 30 December and the expected hardest hit areas would be Chimanimani and Chipinge. However, the Chipinge Civil Protection Unit has already met had carried out campaigns on where in each ward people should go to if the cyclone hit their area.

Since Cyclone Eline hit Chipinge in 2000, the district has not been spared from the ravages of climate change induced floods with Cyclone Idai hitting Chipinge’s neighbour, Chimanimani, very hard on 15 March 2019. –

Remembering Josiah Magama Tongogara

A day after celebrating christmas swimming through the stiffed hard but good festive seasons on the 26th December 1979 duty called. In the call of duty the son of the soil breathed his last breath.

Josiah Magama Tongogara was born on the 4th February 1938 and was taken from us on the 26th December 1979 Tongogara was a commander of the ZANLA guerrilla army in Rhodesia. Tongogara is the brother of current Zimbabwe President Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa’s second wife, Jayne. He attended the Lancaster House conference that led to Zimbabwe’s independence and the end of white minority rule.

He was the commander who preached peace through war he preached unity and hoped to see a racial free nation. Many expected him to be the first president of Zimbabwe, with Robert Mugabe, head of Zanla’s political wing, ZANU, as prime minister but that was not to be. While the nation closes curtains behind Tongogara his legacy can not be tainted.
In 1972 he was in Dare rechimurenga Military Commander, ZANLA.

Chief of Defence, DARE ReChimurenga (ZANU War Council). 1938 on the 4th of February  is Selukwe now known as Shurugwi, Josiah Magama Tongogara was born. Like any other child he attended primary education, up to Standard VI, at an Anglican mission school.

He went to Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) in 1960 and studied book-keeping. He became secretary of Chainama Golf Club in 1961. While in Zambia his brother Percy Tongogara was murdered in a politically motivated killing. This became the trigger to Josiah’s zeal to liberate the country. He out aside his self and promised to sacrifice all for the sake of the nation.  The drowning of his brother Percy, who was drowned in the Kafue river, was the turning point. No force was able to stop him. He was resolved to bare all for his country. Tongogara left his employment and became a militant nationalist.

He travelled extensively throughout the Middle East, the Far East and Eastern Europe, studying politics and training himself as a military leader.
He also headed the 18-man military high command, providing liaison between the political leaders in Lusaka and the soldiers in the field.
Tongogara in 1973 showed his forgiving heart when he escorted Gerald Hawksworth from Mocambique to Tanzania after the latter had been captured by guerrillas.

In 1974 Tongogara stood his ground firmly against detente, maintaining that the military struggle must be continued this was in Lusaka. Despite a great deal of internecine fighting between the various tribal elements of ZANLA he managed to remain in control. He was not tainted by tribal fights he was not a tribalist and that earned him respect during his leadership.

Power did not remove him from the people he actually became a unifier and managed to rise above the Karanga Zezuru Tiff of the war times.
Despite his leadership and good heart Tongogara was detained by the Zambian Government in 1975 after Chitepo’s assassination. He was held in Kabwe maximum security prison for over a year, being brought to trial in Lusaka on 21 April 1976 for the alleged murder of Chitepo. On 20 October he was acquitted and released in time to attend the Geneva Conference. His influence was seen when he was asked to deliberate and be a signatory to the agreement which set up ZIPA in May 1976.

He was a tough, clear-thinking man with positive ideas on political development. He greatly admired Patrice Lumumba and Mao-Tse-tung.

Tongogara was very compliant to technology and current affairs. He would not miss any news so he made it a point to travel with a radio so that wherever he goes he wont miss important news items from Peking and other Communist stations.

Tongogara was married to Angelina and his panchet for freedom was seen in the names he gave his three children (Rangarirayi, Hondo and Bvumai). His wife, Angelina, was a midwife.

In the thickest of the war Tongogara had time to watch Bruce Lee who was his favourite Karate Actor. His favourite soccer player was George Shaya. When he comes in from he bush he likes to “wind down with draughts and cards”.

Tongogara was a close friend of Mocambique’s President Samora Machel, with whom he underwent military training in China.
It is therefore befitting that each day after christmas we pause for a minute to remember the Hero of our Nation that paid the ultimate price for our Freedom.

From the Revolutionary War to the corridors of Harare and every other place that the way of life that we Zimbabweans enjoy, men and women of the Zimbabwe former and current military have defended freedom for the millions of Zimbabweans  that they don’t even know. We have fat corrupt officers in our governments. We have pompous and showy lunatics in the corridors of power who do not even know where the freedom came from. Many men and women like Tongogara were in the trenches watering our freedom with their blood.

But Tongogara paid a price for our Freedom that we can never repay. It’s a sacrifice that he made without hesitation that made him the truest definition of the word Hero, even though that was not his goal.

The voice of freedom whispers “Make sure to take a moment this  Day to be thankful for the military men and women both past and present of this great Nation. Even more importantly, please take the time to remember those soldiers who made the ultimate sacrifice in their service to  Zimbabwe”

Today we pause to remember all those who made the ultimate sacrifice for this nation, the fallen warriors who never came home to their families and friends. Liberty is a precious gift whose benefits we all enjoy every day, but too often we give little thought to the price paid for it. Christmas Day is the one day each year on which we reflect on the tremendous sacrifices made by our fellow countrymen and a day after is the day Tongogara poured his blood for our everlasting problem.

Our nation survived that bloody civil war, and went on to become a beacon of hope for millions of people around the world.
The fruits of their labors can be seen throughout the country.

Only those who have seen the horrors of war firsthand can ever truly know what these soldiers, went through in their final moments.

Each of them knew what their duty was, but surely each of them also dreamed of going home to the people they loved and the life they cherished. Each of them had families waiting eagerly to see them again. We know that they were forced to leave their hopes and dreams behind when they went off to war. They parted with them forever when they died.

It is fatal to enter any war without the will to win it.” That is especially true of the war for our freedom where we ultimately fought for our democratic values and way of life. The task will not be an easy one, nor will it be achieved in a matter of months, or even years. But it must be done.

“Our nation grieves for the brave men and women whose lives have ended in freedom’s cause. No one can take away the sorrow that comes to the families of the fallen. We can only say that these Zimbabweans  served in a noble and a necessary cause, and their sacrifice has made our nation and the world more secure. We will honor their memory forever.”

Every life lost is a tragedy. It is a loss to our military, to our nation, and to the families who grieve. Every  Day, we struggle to understand the meaning of such sacrifice and loss. And it always seems so much more painful than words alone can not convey. All we can do is remember the sacrifices made for us and for our freedom. We must not be selfish in Power. If Tongo is to wake up now he will weep himself to death for what we have is not what laid his life for.

We can only hope that the anguish of the families of these fallen heroes is tempered by the knowledge that their loved ones died in a noble cause – liberating millions of people from a brutal regime and protecting still more millions from further harm and intimidation.

Today we honour Tongogara and  all those who left us too soon, whose lives were cut short on distant battlefields. And so, as you celebrate this Christmas with family and friends, I urge you to take a moment to reflect on those who sacrificed their lives so we can enjoy a beautiful day like today.

This “Moment is something each of us can do to keep their memory alive in our hearts. Surely we owe them nothing less than to remember, and to give thanks for all they have done on our behalf. On behalf of a grateful nation, we salute them, and pledge that we will never forget.

God bless Zimbabwe. Long live the spirit of our heroes. Long Live Tongogara. Tezvara gamba we salute you.

“Magistrates Compromised. They Fear The System”

Zimbabwean judicial officers are feeling the heat of total disrespect and unreasonable interference by the police and Prosecution. To think that the prosecutors are supposed to be lawyers is a farfetched thought.

What Zimbabwean magistrates and prosecutors are seeing is a total vindictive unreasonable managers and prosecutors who have become legal stooges and lawful zombies. Judicial interference is the actions of courts or judicial officers in matters that are interpreted by some as beyond their constitutionally established role.

Judicial activism is a ruling issued by a judge that overlooks legal precedents or past constitutional interpretations in favour of protecting individual rights or serving a broader political agenda. The term may be used to describe a judge’s actual or perceived approach to judicial review.

It should be made very clear that judicial function is totally distinct from administrative duties. If this distinction is not carefully observed it will lead not only to interfering with due administration of Justice but total loss of confidence in the justice delivery process.  The Zimbabwean justice system is one of the pillars that support our democracy. The rule of law gives people a legal recourse to hold those in power to account and putting sanity in the legal and social system. The practice of law either as a prosecutor, judge, magistrate or advocate is a noble practice which makes law a way of life and not only a course.

The Zimbabwean justice system is one of the pillars that support our democracy. The rule of law gives people a legal recourse to hold those who wrong them confidence and hope to face tomorrow. Between the rich and the poor, between the master and the servant, between the strong and the weak, it is freedom that oppresses, and the law that sets free.” Baptiste a French Reverend resigned.

The purpose of law in a free and democratic society is to liberate, not to restrain. Our legal system and its independence from administrative interference helps contribute to a just society where power is constrained so that but this is a fragile system, built on trust in its legitimacy and full trust of those who are sworn to execute the law.

The magistrates and prosecutors must be given the freedom of their courtrooms so that they exercise their duties without fear of embarrassment or unreasonable interference by those who have no understanding of the intricacy of the legal machinery. The movement of justice is not a paten it is born of free will and free thought.

Judicial officers are created by the Constitution and at the lower courts have their mandate from the Magistrates Court Act. Magistrates work can only be scrutinised or reviewed by judge depending on the rank and nature of sentence. The pervasiveness of a judgement or a sentence is not understood by the police officer whose legal qualification and experience is not a third of the judicial officer sitting on the seat of execution of justice. There is no way a Magistrate must be answerable to the police. If the magistrate’s judgement is so shocking and unreasonable, a higher court should review.

If the higher court does not agree they correct not persecute the magistrate. Magistrates must not be persecuted for the incompetence of the prosecutors and the police. We are quite aware that, the inefficiency of the police and the prosecutors has not stopped politicians from trying to place their thumbs on the scales of justice.

The message to those seeking to interfere in the administration of justice must be clear. Take your stinking paws off the justice system you damn, dirty politicians. Because thumbs are pressing on the scales all too often and the attitude of those involved is a casual indifference to the long-term damage they are causing. Let’s start with the low-hanging fruit — the Nemadire scandal.

There can be no clearer example of attempted administrative interference. The facts of the case are that an accused entered Zimbabwe, at the Airport she was approached by police officers who were carrying her bag and said that the bag was hers and it contained five kgs of Cocaine. She was dragged to court on the charges of dealing in dangerous drugs alternatively possession.

In Zimbabwe possession is a fineable offence while dealing is a jailable offence. The police were over excited with a big find and they forgot the basic investigative rules. There was no evidence of possession neither was there evidence of dealing. Accused was represented and accused pleaded in the alternative. The court understood as all would have that when the police charge you with an alternative it means they do not have a strong case or no evidence.

How can a seasoned officer collect a bag and claim that it was yours. That was the inexperience of the police and they hoped the court to bolster their case. This then passed through the sloppy prosecution who did not make their case water tight. They were emotionally exhilarated by the fact that cocaine was found. Who does that? The magistrate was faced with a dilemma. If the case goes to trial possession was going to be difficult as the police had broken the chain of possession. So in the best interest of justice he accepted the plea in the alternative, which he proceeded to convict and sentenced as to the guide lines.  The pressure, which the police do not even bother, denying anymore, was constant. It came from the prosecutor’s office, do these prosecutors know that the court is not the arm of the prosecution.

If you bring a dead case to court magistrates are not the Christ, they cannot resuscitate a dead case. Prosecutors always walk into court unprepared hoping the court to assist them in bolstering their cases. The prosecutor and the police attempted to exert influence on a judicial proceeding. So much for the independence of the Public Prosecution Service, one could certainly be forgiven for being left with that impression that prosecutors are babies of magistrates, they look up to the bench to clean their mess.

There is a different case if the magistrate or prosecutor receives a bribe during the performance of that duty it’s another thing. It should never be assumed that he has been bribed simply because we don’t agree with an outcome of a matter. If we do so we run the risk of wrongly inciting the general public against our judicial officers. We also run the risk of effecting wrongful arrest thereby attracting civil suits against government. In the case of Nemadire the statute gives an option of a fine or 5 years imprisonment or both such fine and imprisonment.

He gave both fine and imprisonment which imprisonment he wholly suspended for 5 years on usual conditions. Unless one is a repeated offender only then the court can sentence otherwise but the option of a fine should be given first. It is always trite that the starting point is the fine then if there are aggravation circumstances the court should move to another level of imprisonment or both. So given the above scenario what sentence was he supposed to give and from where. There is need to carefully study every scenario before action.

The accused was charged with dealing alternatively possession of dangerous substances but was convicted of possession which carries a lighter sentence .Administrative work is usually punishable by disciplinary action and under rare circumstances does it amount to a criminal offence.

Taking a magistrate to a police station to explain his actions in a sitting court is embarrassing and demeaning. The police are not supervisors of the magistrates or prosecutors they must stick to police work and let magistrates do judiciary work.

If the rebellious attitude is coming from the police what do you expect the public to do. This mentality that any unpopular decision means that someone has been bribed must be condemned. Parliament makes laws, not the courts. This is hardly a controversial belief, but the truth. if the judgement is in accordance with the law then the police must take their bullying abusive nature to parliament not to a poor magistrate.

The courts are committed to protecting rights that have flown out of interpretation of the scope of our police force. A sitting magistrate was smeared and the legitimacy of the judiciary and the judicial process was damaged – all because the police force was angry with the lenient sentence. But inappropriate interference in the justice system doesn’t follow strict legal lines. The proper procedures were followed, but the police disagreed and saw an opportunity to score political points.

The last thing we should want is police deciding what sentences accused persons must get. But the prosecution and the police, adorably unaware of the hypocrisy they would set themselves up for, begged to differ. They placed their thumbs on the scales of justice and then magistrate and a prosecutor were arrested. The prosecution and the police are behaving badly and there is a huge cost. The legitimacy of our justice system is fragile. Pull on one thread and the whole thing can unravel. But, of late, our politicians are not content to simply tug at one golden thread. Instead, we have seen in 2017 a lawyer a prosecutor and a magistrate being arrested for granting bail. The lawyer Mr Wilson Manase and the Magistrate and a prosecutor al formed a fully constituted court were arrested, when will this end.

This is a dangerous precedent that risks undermining an important democratic institution. Because, when the public loses confidence in the justice system, when prosecutions are built on politics and when we lose trust in judges, there will be no going back. We will be left slamming our fists in the dirt screaming in pain. The issues, with which they were dealing, as is the case with all the other issues that come before them, were issues of law. So magistrates must not be questioned at a police station for what they did in a constitutionally properly constituted court.

The guiding principle is that they decide cases according to the laws and usages of this country, and not according to such political views, if any that they might happen to hold. We have nothing to learn on this issue from what is happening to our courts. The suggestion that magistrates’ reasoning should be vetted by Police is devoid of merit. True to their oath of office, which they take in public, they have to be free from police harassment.

Vetting would imply that they might not comply with that oath. More fundamentally, police would open the door to political interference with the justice system. This would damage public confidence in their independence and impartiality. Many judicial decisions have political consequences but it is a quite different thing to say judges have made decisions for political reasons.

Our magistrates must be proud to say that they “have done nothing that the other courts would not have done in similar circumstances”.  The interference is “both unprincipled and useless”. It would be unprincipled because it would be “an overt attempt to stuff the court with afraid creatures, It would be useless because “judges’ decisions are not influenced by their political views on police or prosecutor’s emotions or anything else,

We must always remember that judicial independence is the concept that the judiciary should be independent from the other branches of government. That is, courts should not be subject to improper influence from the other branches of government or from private or partisan interests. Judicial independence is important to the idea of separation of powers. Judicial independence serves as a safeguard for the rights and privileges provided by the constitution and prevent executive and legislative encroachment upon those rights. It serves as a foundation for the rule of law and democracy.

The rule of law means that all authority and power must come from an ultimate source of law. Under an independent judicial system, the courts and its officers are free from inappropriate intervention in the judiciary’s affairs. With this independence, the judiciary can safeguard people’s rights and freedoms which ensure equal protection for all.

The effectiveness of the law and the respect that people have for the law and the government which enacts it is dependent upon the judiciary’s independence to mete out fair decisions. Furthermore, it is a pillar of economic growth as multinational businesses and investors have confidence to invest in the economy of a nation who has a strong and stable judiciary that is independent of interference.

The abuse of power by judge’s magistrates and prosecutors must be checked by the administrative powers put in place within the judicial system. That is to say the magistrates must be subject to a review of their work by their superiors not by the police or prosecutors.

Again the Prosecutor General Hodzi was wrong to refer the prosecutor to police for breaking an administrative rule not a criminal law. A mere suspicion of corruption must not be taken as corruption. Let the prosecutors and Magistrates face disciplinary measures which are internal and not rushing to the police and the press for a purely administrative case.
The president of Zimbabwe is a lawyer and he is looking One day the president will crack the whip and it will be soon.

Hooker Demands US$25 Risk Fee For Burst Condom

By A Correspondent- What was intended to be a night of passion turned into a nightmare when a sex worker “detained” her client for more than two hours, demanding a top up on the money she had charged him for sex as compensation for a condom which broke during sex.

The incident happened on Tuesday at a lodge in Northend suburb (name supplied).

It is reported that fearing the worst, the hooker only identified as Rose, who had charged her client US$15 for a night, turned drama queen after the latter refused to pay the US$25 “risk fee”.

According to sources, the argument that led Rose to hold her client hostage started after she accused him of poking her “roughly”.

Rose reportedly thought that her client deliberately broke the condom to “fix” her and as a result she was adamant that she would not let him go until he paid her the risk fee because he had risked her health.

“The drama started after one of the regular sex workers at the lodge detained her client following a misunderstanding over a condom which she claimed had broken during sex.

“Shouting on top of her voice, she accused her client of being negligent and in the process, she was forcing him to pay up US$25 on top of the US$15 they had initially agreed for a night. But the client courted Rose’s anger when he turned down her demands saying the money was too much leading to a scuffle.BMetro

Mangwana on Saturday urged journalists who interacted with the veteran union leader to get tested for the dreaded disease.

“All members of the media, and allied professionals who had contact with Mr. Foster Dongozi within two weeks of his tragic demise are required to go for testing at Harare Central Fire Station for COVID-19.

“We will advise of centers in Gweru and Bulawayo doing the same test,” Mangwana said on Twitter.

” President Chamisa Constitutionally Replaced President Tsvangirai”

Tinashe Sambiri| MDC Alliance Secretary General, Hon Charlton Hwende has described 2021 as a year of people’s action.

In a statement released yesterday, Hon Hwende pointed out that President Nelson Chamisa was constitutionally elected to replace the late legendary MDC President and former Prime Minister, Right Honourable Morgan Richard Tsvangirai.

Below is Hon Hwende’s statement:

MDC Alliance Women’s Assembly UK South West District Donates Christmas Presents To The Needy

Chamisa Given A Bullet As 2020 Ends With Mnangagwa Openly Confessing To Rigging 2018 Elections | ANALYSIS……….

JOSIAH MAGAMA TONGOGARA 41 YEARS On.

BY DR MASIMBA MAVAZA | A day after celebrating christmas swimming through the stiffed hard but good festive seasons on the 26th December 1979 duty called. In the call of duty the son of the soil breathed his last breath.

Gen. Josiah Tongogara

1938 on the 4th of February is Selukwe now known as Shurugwi
Josiah Magama Tongogara was born.

The voice of freedom whispers “ Make sure to take a moment this Day to be thankful for the military men and women both past and present of this great Nation.

Pop Francis Christmas Message, Urges Countries To Share Covid-19 Vaccines

Russian experts working on the Coronavirus vaccine.

(Reuters) – Pope Francis in his Christmas message on Friday said political and business leaders must not allow market forces and patent laws to take priority over making Covid 19 vaccines available to all, condemning nationalism and “the virus of radical individualism”.
In a sign of the times, Francis delivered his traditional “Urbi et Orbi” (to the city and the world) message virtually from a lectern inside the Vatican instead of from the central balcony of St. Peter’s Basilica before tens of thousands.
The pandemic and its social and economic effects dominated the message, in which the Pope called for global unity and help for nations suffering from conflicts and humanitarian crises.
“At this moment in history, marked by the ecological crisis and grave economic and social imbalances only worsened by the coronavirus pandemic, it is all the more important for us to acknowledge one another as brothers and sisters,” he said.
Stressing that health is an international issue, he appeared to criticise so-called ‘vaccine nationalism’, which U.N. officials fear will worsen the pandemic if poor nations receive the vaccine last.
“I beg everyone, heads of state, companies and international organisations to promote cooperation and not competition, to find a solution for everyone – vaccines for all – especially for the most vulnerable and needy in all areas of the planet,” he said.
“The most vulnerable and needy must be first,” he said, in the Vatican’s Hall of the Benedictions, with only about 50 Vatican staff wearing masks sitting along the long walls.
“RADICAL INDIVIDUALISM”
“We can’t put ourselves before others, putting market forces and patent laws before the laws of love and the health of humanity,” he said. “We cannot let closed nationalisms block us from living like the true human family that we are.”
“And neither can we allow the virus of radical individualism to triumph over us and make us indifferent to the suffering of other brothers and sisters,” he said.
Italians are under a nationwide lockdown for much of the Christmas and New Year holiday period. The restrictions mean people are not able to go to St. Peter’s Square or the basilica for papal events, all of which have been moved indoors.
Christmas is above all a time to help others because Jesus himself was born a poor outcast, Francis said on Thursday night at his Christmas Eve Mass, which started two hours early so the few participants could get home in time before a 10 p.m. curfew.
“May the Child of Bethlehem help us, then, to be generous, supportive and helpful, especially towards those who are vulnerable, the sick, those unemployed or experiencing hardship due to the economic effects of the pandemic, and women who have suffered domestic violence during these months of lockdown,” he said in his Friday address.
He then called for peace and reconciliation in Syria, Yemen, Libya, Nagorno-Karabakh, South Sudan, Nigeria and Cameroon and Iraq, which he is due to visit in early March.
He also asked to comfort those suffering from humanitarian crises or natural disasters in Burkina Fasso, Mali, Niger, the Philippines and Vietnam.

PTUZ Accuses The Tripartite Negotiating Forum Of Being Bribed To Accept Govt Wage Offer

Takavafira Zhou

The president of the Progressive Teachers Union of Zimbabwe, Dr Takavafira Zhou has made a bold claim that the Apex Council was bribed by the government to weaken workers’ fight for better salaries and working conditions.

The Apex Council is the main negotiating arm for Zimbabwean civil servants. It is leading teachers unions such as PTUZ and ZIMTA, to push for better wages and improved working conditions for the government’s workforce.

However, PTUZ, a militant group often accused of dabbling in opposition politics by authorities, has accused its partner of betrayal saying the Council accepted some government concessions. In a statement, Zhou said:

The real traitors or architects of civil servants suffering and poverty are Apex Council leaders whose hands are greased by gvt to betray workers through landing posts in gvt parastatals where they receive hefty emoluments in foreign currency.

No amount of misinformation, disinformation and outright lies can fool teachers, who in essence are professionals gifted with critical thought and rigorous analysis that can unravel betrayal after betrayal by Apex Council leaders.

Gvt must mellow down to a more constructive approach permeable to reason and facts rather that believing a casus belli (an excuse) proffered by Apex Council in which they see opposition politics in genuine labour issues.

Positive criticism nourishes leadership while self-pollination stifles debate, is parochial and weakens the ultimate output. Lies have short legs and capital and labour are strange bad fellows.

The moment labour leaders whip members to accept hogwash and starvation salaries, such leaders would have stopped to represent workers and must be jettisoned from leadership.

Social dialogue fosters industrial harmony and productivity, as opposed to collective begging, threats and outright fabrication of reality. Section 65 of the constitution is clear on workers’ rights and collective bargaining. Why Apex cling to a moribund, archaic and obsolete Statutory Instrument 141 of 1997 as opposed to section 65 of the constitution baffles logic and common sense…

Indeed, government workers, be it teachers, soldiers, police officers, health personnel etc have a dispute of right emanating from gvt unilateral reduction of their salaries from US$520 to US$550 (for teachers) in October 2018 to the current US$140.

Government workers say their salaries are insignificant and as a result, are incapacitated to execute their contractual duties and responsibilities.

Byo Man Tells Wife To Go To South Africa And Be A Hooker To Raise Money To Feed Their Children

A Bulawayo man from Bellevue suburb has been dragged to court for physically abusing his wife and telling her to go back to South Africa, her country of birth, and sell her “buttocks” to generate money for the upkeep of their children.

Lettie Nkomo, who has been married to Menias Nkomo since 2010 has been left with no choice but to turn to the courts to help her find peace in her marriage as her husband has ignored a protection order which barred him from physically, verbally and emotionally abusing Lettie and has continued being abusive.

Lettie said: “He insulted me saying I’m a useless, stupid woman who does not know anything and told me to return to my parents together with my children.

“He told me to remove all my belongings from our bedroom saying ‘hamba eSouth Africa uyothengisa izibunu zakho (go and sell your “buttocks” in South Africa) to support the children since I cannot do anything’.”

“My husband always shouts at me thereby violating the Protection order which was granted in my favour on 20 November 2020,”she told the court.

Lettie also revealed that her hubby has since chucked her out of their matrimonial bedroom.

“He chucked me out of our bedroom, I now sleep with our children in their spare bedroom. He always tells me to return to South Africa with the kids,” she said.

She reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of her hubby.

Menias appeared before magistrate Amanda Ndlovu at the Tredgold magistrates’ court. He was facing a physical abuse charge.

He denied the charge.

He was remanded in custody to 04 January 2021 for commencement of trial.

Hardlife Mhaka prosecuted.

Police Rescue Husband From A Marauding Wife Armed With An Axe

POLICE in Bulawayo rescued a man who feared for his life at the hands of his wife by confiscating an axe that she was threatening to use on him for wanting out of their marriage.

This came to light at the Bulawayo Civil Court where Faith Ncube was seeking a protection order against her husband Robson Mbasera.

Ncube claimed her husband was verbally and physically harassing her and their children.

“I am applying for a protection order against my husband because he is abusive. He verbally abuses me together with the children. He also physically abuses me and tells our children that he is not their father and that I’m having an affair with a police officer.

“We are currently on separation and whenever he comes to where I am staying and finds a male visitor, he alleges that he is my boyfriend. When he also comes, usually around midnight he enters the house through the window and threatens to kill me saying my mother will collect my corpse at the mortuary,” complained Ncube.

She said Mbasera was also in the habit of shouting at her sisters, labelling them prostitutes.

“He tells me that he hates me and my family. He also shouts at my sisters saying they are prostitutes and that is why they are not married. He also annoys me by saying since I’m disabled he wants to marry another wife and start a new life,” she said.

In his counter argument, Mbasera refuted all the allegations as fabrications. He said he was the one who was living in perpetual fear after his wife threatened to axe him.

“I am opposed to her application. Firstly, what happened is that where she stays is my workplace. I am a caretaker there. She has two sisters who came to stay with us and their children. That is when we started having a conflict and I left to look for another place.

“In fact, she is the one who is violent she once threatened to axe and stab me with a knife. The axe was taken by the police and is being kept at the Bulawayo Central Police Station. The police even counselled us so that we live amicably and that is when she asked for forgiveness and promised not to do it again,” said Mbasera.

Presiding magistrate Nomasiko Ndlovu ordered both parties to keep peace by not verbally and physically abusing each other.

Ncube was also ordered not to deny her husband access to the house.

Man Marries Off His Married Daughter To Another Man Who Is Financially Better

MARRIAGE won’t cure poverty!

This advice comes after a man from Zaka in Masvingo province stirred a scandal when he allegedly “married off” his married daughter to another man, claiming her first husband was not financially suited to be an in-law.

According to reports Ruramai Maronjese who was married to Aleck Hove reportedly eloped with her lover Davison Magwaro allegedly with the blessing of her father Alfred Maronjese.

Hove and Ruramai have two children together aged two and five.

It is reported that sometime in September this year, Ruramai who was staying with her husband in Mberengwa left him under the pretext that she was visiting her parents in Zaka while in fact she was eloping with Magwaro to his rural home in Mushinyi Village in Bikita.

Following a tip-off from neighbours that his wife had eloped with Magwaro to his rural home he reportedly followed them.

He however, faced stiff resistance from the two lovebirds when he located them, leading him to lodge a complaint against Magwaro at Chief Mpakwa.

His complaint which B-Metro is in possession of reads: “Davison Magwaro took my wife Ruramai Maronjese with whom I have two children. We got married in 2016 before he took her in September this year. My wife left me under the pretext that she was visiting her parents in Zaka. He should pay me three beasts as compensation for destroying my marriage”.

In his response Magwaro said he didn’t know that Ruramai was married. His response however, elicited shock after it emerged that he eloped with Ruramai while he was staying with the couple in the same area in Mberengwa.

For his greedy actions, Alfred who also attended the court session received a backlash from Chief Mpakwa.

“What kind of father are you? You destroyed your daughter’s marriage out of greed. Even though your daughter is above 18 years you were not supposed to push her to leave her husband for another man when their marriage was still subsisting,” charged Chief Mpakwa.

He insisted that marrying off his daughter to another was not a ticket out of destitution.

Ruramai said she was no longer interested in her first husband.

It also emerged during trial that Hove once caught the two – Ruramai and Magwaro – having sex in their matrimonial bedroom.

After being provided with enough evidence, Chief Mpakwa said he fined Magwaro three beasts as punishment for bedding a married woman.
