Covid-19 Deaths Spiral

Zimbabwe has recorded nine new Covid-19 deaths in the last 24 hours to take the total number of deaths to 22 between Sunday and yesterday from 461 positive cases recorded.

Almost all the 461 cases are community transmissions, representing a stark reminder that citizens need to heed guidelines aimed at curbing the spread of the disease to avoid a huge spike in infections.

In the last 24 hours alone, 130 fresh cases were reported together with the nine deaths.

Since the start of the pandemic in Zimbabwe Covid-19 has killed 339.

According to a Ministry of Health and Child Care daily update last night, all 130 new cases yesterday were local transmissions, while the deaths were spread across the county: Harare (2), Bulawayo (2), Manicaland (1), Mashonaland East (1), Mashonaland West (2) and Masvingo (1).

In total, 1 870 PCR tests were done yesterday, while 55 new recoveries were also reported, taking the national recovery rate to 80,7 percent, on 10 314 recoveries.

However, active cases went up to 2 133 as at yesterday, taking the overall positive tests to 12 786 since March when Covid-19 cases were first noted.

Zimbabwe has been notching higher positive cases since Sunday when 174 fresh cases and two deaths were reported.

All the 174 cases were local transmissions.

On Monday, 97 new cases – all local transmissions – and two deaths were reported while 122 new cases and four deaths were reported Tuesday, with 105 being local cases and 17 returnees from South Africa.

On Wednesday, 112 new cases and four deaths were reported, with 111 being local cases and one returnee from South Africa.

Since March, Zimbabwe has tested 314 065 people using both rapid and PCR tests.

Last night the Ad Hoc Inter Ministerial Task Force on Covid-19 warned citizens to be extra careful this festive season, particularly amid reports of a new strain of the virus both in South Africa and Britain.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Monica Mutsvangwa, who chairs the Covid-19 information and communication sub-committee, said: “The threat posed by Covid-19 has not rescinded, but has increased as there is a new strain of the virus.

“Now more than ever we need to practice protective and preventive measures such as wearing our masks in public spaces, washing or sanitising our hands, and physical distancing.”

Some citizens fear that returnees who opt to skip borders threaten to undo the efforts recorded by the country in the battle against the pandemic.

US$1.5 Million Disappears At Chitungwiza Municipality

A WHOPPING US$1,5 million has gone missing from the accounts of the Chitungwiza council, amid indications that councillors and management could be behind the crime.

According to documents availed to The Herald, US$1 503 310, 34 was deposited from Chitungwiza salaries accounts; Metropolitan Bank account number 08070018761113 into three unidentified Metbank accounts — 007001876117, 007001876125 and 160060002 — in 2010 and 10 years later, despite attempts to cover up the apparent crime, not a single cent has been returned to the council, which is failing to provide services to ratepayers.

The money was being withdrawn under unclear circumstances and its use has allegedly not been accounted for to date.

A leaked document from council auditors raises questions over what became of the US$1,5 million.

“During the Tanyanyiwa era the then town clerk, the council used to transfer various amounts from the above salaries council account to unidentified ones which are 007001876117, 007001876125 and 160060002. The passage through was Metbank which used to run the council bank account.

“Verbally the said bank replied and said the accounts were investment accounts for council and no written communication from the bank was seen. But this meant the bank still had the monies in its coffers for Chitungwiza investments. From there, no one knows what then happened to that money, that is, did the investment mature because if it was an investment it should have matured because an investment grows. Also no one knows whether the accounts were closed,” noted the documents.

“If it matured or not, no proof that it was redeposited into Chitungwiza municipality account together with interests. Possibilities are that the money may have found its way into individual pockets for personal gain.”

In 2013, Chitungwiza Municipality’s finance director Mrs Evangelista Machona wrote a letter to the bank seeking clarification of what became of the money, but from there everything headed into a mist.

“It has been noted that there are transactions made from Chitungwiza Salaries Account into account numbers 007001876117, 007001876125 and 160060002. The record of our account numbers with your bank do not include these account numbers. Can you furnish us with information on these account numbers. These transaction entries which are of concern to the council were picked here during the compilation of reconciliation statements and all of them emanated from entries contained in bank statements obtained from your bank in 2010. Photocopies of bank statements are herewith for ease of reference,” she said.

Contacted for comment yesterday, Mrs Machona confirmed that the money is still missing.

“I am aware of the issue but when the transfers happened, I was not yet employed by the municipality and I am the one who found out about the transfers,” said Mrs Machona.

She said she wrote the letter after to find out about the money which was not accounted for within their system, and was transferred from the municipality’s salaries account into the three accounts.

Chitungwiza Residents and Ratepayers Association chairperson Mr Arthur Taderera has since filed a report with Police Anti-Corruption Unit under reference number ER 156/20 over the matter.

Mr Taderera also wrote a letter of complaint to Chitungwiza Mayor Lovemore Maiko and copied it to Local Government and Public Works Minister July Moyo, his permanent secretary, the offices of Provincial Development Coordinator, Chitungwiza Town Clerk and Chamber Secretary.

“The Mayor of the Municipality of Chitungwiza, Your Worship Mr Maiko, as residents of our emerging town we feel let down by your office and it is one of the many reasons we are writing this letter with so much grief as to what is happening at our municipality.

“It has come to our attention that within the municipality management, some officials are enriching themselves at the expense of rate payers. Instead of providing service delivery to residents, some of the town’s officials are bleeding the councils coffers dry,” he said.

Mozambique Military Fends Off Terrorist Attack Near $20 Billion LNG Project

Mozambique said its security forces repelled an attack by Islamist insurgents on a town close to the site where Total SE is building a $20 billion natural gas facility.

Bloomberg reported the country’s Ministry of Defence saying the attack took place about 21 kilometres (13 miles) from Total’s project overnight on Wednesday and is the second this month on the town of Mute in the northern Cabo Delgado province.

The insurgents, who have aligned with Islamic State, seized the port town of Mocimboa da Praia, about 42 kilometres south of Mute in August.

The conflict has already killed about 2,500 people and caused 570,000 to flee their homes since it started three years ago and the latest attack on the natural gas facility may derail the investment.

Mozambique’s government has struggled to contain the insurgency and President Filipe Nyusi has faced criticism for refusing outside help.

Leaders from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) are set to meet in January to agree on a plan to prevent the conflict from spilling across Mozambique’s borders.

Mudzuri Says All The Money Meant To Fund The MDC-T EOC Was Stolen

MDC-T presidential aspirant Elias Mudzuri said the party is not ready to hold its Supreme Court-ordered extraordinary congress (EOC) slatted for Sunday at the HICC.

In a circular to delegates, Mudzuri said the party had no money to hold the EOC after some party officials misappropriated US$60 000 which was advanced to the party by government under the Political Parties Finance Act

Mudzuri further said there are confusing messages about the venue for the EOC and also the party’s failure to finalise the voters’ roll. He said:

As things stand, there is no money for congress as the US$60 000 meant for the party was fraudulently moved from the party’s account without the express approval of the treasurer and the standing committee.

The voters roll had not been finalised up to 17:30hours today (yesterday).

Meanwhile, MDC-T deputy chairperson Morgen Komichi confirmed that Government gave permission for the party to hold the EOC at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).

MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende claimed that the ruling ZANU PF party booked the MDC-T at the HICC “to ensure that their project of running an opposition party in Zimbabwe succeeds”.

Cross Border Association Blames Zim Govt For Border Mishap

The International Cross-Border Traders’ Association (ICTA) has voiced frustration at the Zimbabwean government’s failure to completely reopen the country’s borders to allow its citizens to return during the festive season.

Hundreds of trucks, buses, taxis and small vehicles remain queued at the Beitbridge border post between South Africa and Zimbabwe this Christmas Day, attempting to get to the port of entry which has been congested for several days.

The queue has stretched as long as 14 kilometres to Musina.

ICTA president Denis Juru says, “I would like to condemn this Zimbabwean government because when the SA government announced that they are going to open their borders, they were citing the festive season. The Zimbabwe government failed to open the border entirely and all the people who have been locked in SA have been waiting for the borders to be reopened and this is not about travelling or holidays only, but it is also about people escaping SA. They have been locked in SA without money, work or food. This is the situation we have because Zimbabwe failed to open their borders.”

Traffic outside Beitbridge Border post remains congested:

Meanwhile, Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says truck drivers are to blame for the current congestion at the Beitbridge Border Post, as hundreds of Zimbabweans return home for Christmas.

Motsoaledi says most truck drivers do not have the documentation required to cross the border and are, therefore, blocking all other travellers who are ready to cross with the relevant documentation.

“If you go to Beitbridge now, our people are idling there at the border because the theatre of war is not at the border with customs or Home Affairs, it’s on the road where the truckers have blocked while they don’t have documents to pass through. Take them back to Musina, let the truck drivers do administration. They are in the holding areas. Then they will leave the road free. Then all the other pedestrians will not find the congestion. If the truck drivers were playing the game by the rules, we wouldn’t be having this congestion that is there.”

Discussion on the bottle-neck at the Beitbridge Border Post:

Zvishavane Man Collapses And Dies While Giving Speech At Funeral

State Media

The Msipa family in the Ziboza communal lands in Zvishavane was dealt a double blow after a friend to their late family member collapsed and died while giving a graveside eulogy.

The incident that has left tongues wagging, occurred last week during the burial of former Midlands Provincial Governor and National Hero, Cde Cephas Msipa’s brother, Obert.

Witnesses said the burial was almost over when the deceased’s friend, Mr Muchakachaka Dube was given the floor to speak but soon collapsed and died.

The late Cde Msipa’s son, Mr Douglas Msipa, who was the master of ceremonies during the burial, confirmed the tragic incident.

He said everyone in the village was still in shock over the sudden death of Mr Dube.

“I was the master of ceremonies at the funeral of my father’s brother, Cde Obert Msipa when I made a line-up of people who would give speeches at the funeral wake,” he said.

“Initially I had omitted Mr Dube but we later realised he was a close friend to the late so we decided to give him a slot.”

Mr Msipa said he then handed the microphone to Mr Dube and he collapsed and died while in the middle of his graveside speech.

“At first, everyone thought emotions had got the better of him and some mourners picked him up hoping he would be okay,” he said.

“There were two nurses who were also attending the funeral who moved in to try to render first aid but it could not help, everyone was dumfounded to learn he had died just like that.”

Mr Msipa said the matter was still the talk of the village as the community was once again plunged into mourning

“Mr Dube’s body was taken to the hospital and we are waiting for the results of the post-mortem so that we know the actual cause of the death,” he said.

“It could be shock but what is surprising is that he had spent the previous night at the funeral wake looking okay,” he said.

Former Top Model Acquitted On Cocaine Possession Charges

H-Metro

Former model and Zim Fashion Week founder Priscilla Chigariro was on Thursday acquitted of the charges of illegal possession of dangerous drugs.

Chigariro, who was being co-charged together with her sister Ndaka, was acquitted after a full trial by Harare regional magistrate Loice Mukunyadzi.

Magistrate Mukunyadzi ruled that the state failed to establish beyond reasonable doubt that the two were dealing in cocaine as alleged.

“The person who tipped off the police did it out of malice because when the investigating officer testified, he said he expected to find large amounts of cocaine in the house and even went with reinforcements only to recover 0,6kgs of cocaine in the wardrobe full of clothes.

“The manner that the report was made shows that whoever tipped the police had scores to settle.

“In their defence, the two said they said they were shocked and weren’t aware of its existence. There was no knowledge of possession and in such cases, the State then has to prove knowledge of possession.

“The accused persons said they were not even aware that it was in their wardrobe.

Mnangagwa’s Fake Daughter, Man Arrested For “Stealing His Own Gold Ore.”

SHAMVA miner, John Maungwa, who is involved in a bitter mining wrangle with a woman who once masqueraded as President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s daughter Chantelle Chikafu was arrested on Monday for allegedly stealing gold ore from “his own mine”.

Maungwa is still in police custody after Chikafu made a report that the miner had stolen 390 tonnes of gold ore, which she had mined together with Shamva North MP, Oscar Gorerino (Zanu PF).

He had returned to his mine after High Court judge Justice Jacob Manzunzu on April 29, ruled that he be restored possession of Wickman 23 Mine in Umfurudzi Game Park, which Chikafu’s gang working in cahoots with Gorerino, had violently grabbed from him.

Mashonaland provincial police spokesperson Inspector Milton Mundembe could not confirm or deny Maungwa’s arrest. He told NewsDay that he could not readily get the information.

“I didn’t manage to get the information. There is no one in the office to ask because we took an early break. I will give you the information tomorrow (today) morning,” Mundembe said.

But a source close to the matter confirmed Maungwa’s arrest. He alleged that it was a ploy by Chikafu and Gorerino to fix him for winning the court case which gave him unfettered mining rights.

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (ZimParks) and the police had also allowed Maungwa to mine undisturbed in compliance with the court order.

“He has no case. How can he steal his own ore? These people were illegally mining on his mining claims and when the High Court restored him to resume operations Chikafu then made a report that Maungwa had stolen her gold ore. This is just a way by Chikafu and Gorerino to fix him because he has won the rights to his mine,” he said.

The source also alleged that the timing of Maungwa’s arrest was meant to coincide with the holidays so that he stays long in police custody.

“To show you that they wanted to fix him, the police officer, a detective Pasipanodya from Bindura Criminal Investigations Minerals and Flora and Fauna who arrested him, tricked him telling him that he was supposed to go to court. Maungwa went to the courts and waited for the detective, but he was in no show. When he realised that the courts were about to close for the day he appeared and ordered him to the police station where he advised him that he had orders to detain him,” the sources said.

He also said he suspected that Pasipanodya could be working in cahoots with Chikafu and Gorerino in the mine wrangle.

Maungwa’s arrest came soon after the mine wrangle also claimed the scalp of Mashonaland Central police commander Commissioner David Mahoya who was abruptly transferred for ignoring his bosses’ directives to restore Maungwa to his mine in compliance with a High Court order by Justice Tawanda Chitapi of November 25.

Mahoya had been reportedly siding with Chikafu and Gorerino in defying court orders granted by the High Court directing that Maungwa should resume mining operations without interference.

Beitbridge Border Death Toll Put At 15

  • At least 15 people have died in recent weeks on the South African side of the Beitbridge border with Zimbabwe in lengthy queues that have been slowed by coronavirus screening, television news channel eNCA said on Friday.

The health ministry, Department of Home Affairs and South African police Local did not respond immediately to Reuters’ requests on Friday for confirmation of fatalities that local media outlets attributed to exhaustion and ill health owing to a lack of facilities while waiting to cross the border, sometimes for days.

Images and videos on local news channels and circulated on social media showed lines of stationary cars, mainly trucks, stretching for kilometres on the narrow road leading to the inland Beitbridge port that serves as the main crossing point between the countries, and is more busy than usual at this time of year because of a seasonal return of migrants to Zimbabwe.

South Africa, which the United Nations says is host to an estimated 1.5 million Zimbabwean migrants, is suffering a second wave of COVID-19 infections.

Authorities suspect the surge in cases has been triggered by a genetic mutation of the disease. Total positive cases are now near the 1 million mark, by far the most on the continent.

Asked about the border delays in an interview on news channel eNCA, the director-general of South Africa’s Health Department, Sandile Buthelezi, said that coronavirus screening for outgoing traffic had now been suspended but proof of a negative COVID-19 test performed within 30 days would be required upon re-entry.

“The main backlog was outgoing trucks. We don’t require a test when you’re going out of the country,” Buthelezi said.

Ginimbi’s Friend Succumbs to COVID-19

By A Correspondent| A South African-based Zimbabwean businessman Boss Vickela, real name Victor Jimere, reportedly succumbed to COVID-19 in South Africa on Wednesday.

Boss Vickela, who was the late socialite and businessman Genius Ginimbi Kadungunge’s friend was diagnosed with COVID-19 last week.

A friend, who spoke on condition of anonymity and was close to both Ginimbi and Boss Vickela, lamented how he had lost two of his great friends in a short space of time.

“He was diagnosed with Covid-19 last week and I don’t know how it took him so fast.”

“We are hurt, he was a jolly good man and he has lost a vacuum in our circle of friends.”

“Last month it was Ginimbi (Kadungure) and now it’s him, it’s sad mate,” said the friend.

He had become a ‘permanent feature’ at the late Ginimbi’s white parties which he hosted every year.

Condolence messages have been pouring in from friends, colleagues and businessmen on social media as they mourn and pay tribute to him.

He was the owner of Inex Investments, a company that had footprints in grinding mill manufacturing, trucking, and fuel supply chains among others.

However, according to information gathered by the Zim Morning Post, Boss Vickela is alleged to have left more than P10 million tax arrears due to Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS).

The tax arrears are alleged to have resulted in his deportation from Botswana in 2016, forcing him to relocate to South Africa where he quickly picked up his pieces.

MDC Alliance: Christmas Traffic Jams expose Zanupf Gvt’s lack of Urban Infrastructure Plan

By Settlement Chikwinya| In most urban cities and towns it is now normal that during peak hours drivers have to endure long ques at traffic intersections as vehicles nevigate the congestion caused by a delapidated road infrastructure that was constructed Pre Independence and can no longer cope with the volume of traffic that has more than quadrupled.
In most major cities and in particular Harare, the last seven days preceding Christmas holidays has seen traffic congestion in the CBD for more than 12 hours from dawn right up to 10pm.
Literally all intersections are jammed and it can take more than an hour for one to drive accross an intersection.
Traffic lights even if they are working are no longer being respected and most intersections have no Traffic Police to assist drivers.
The rains have made the situation worse.
It is imperative to look at why Zimbabwe faces such a challenge especially around this time of the year when people are driving in and out of cities as they go about their holiday activities.
Bottom line is that there has been no effort to develop our road infrastructure to accommodate the growing envelope of motor vehicles largely driven by importation of Pre used cars mostly from Japan.
The road infrastructure that existed Pre Independence remains largely the same today if not worse due to lack of maintenance.
Most cities in our neighbouring countries have off ramps that decongest the cities of vehicles that have no business passing through the CBD.
Three to four lane feed in and relief roads are constructed as one drives in and out of the CBD.
In Zimbabwe we still have at best a double lane feeding into Harare CBD and this is not commensurate with the volume of traffic in Harare and therefore leads to congestion.
The 2021 budget allocated only funds ment for routine maintenance to the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, this means that there will be no development again to expand our roads.
ZINARA is collecting all licence funds and remitting very little to local authorities. We must get back to a situation where local authorities collect road user fees from residents and use that money to develop local road infrastructure.
Our local roads now have more potholes than surfaced areas due to non maintenance and as long as ZINARA is collecting the funds instead of local authorities, no single local authority will be able to deliver on road maintenance.
It is hightime citizens call for local resource mobilization and use in line with principles of Devolution.
In the presence of all these frustrating congestion conditions on our roads, the MDC Alliance calls for patients and courtesy among drivers to minimise accidents and costs that eat into our already erroded purses.
Wishing you all a merry Christmas and a safe 2021 ahead.
Covid is real , isolate, wash your hands and always put on your mask in public.

Mudzuri Claims MDC-T Is Broke, Can’t Hold USD$60k Congress

One of the four candidates contesting the MDC-T presidency, Elias Mudzuri, has raised a red flag over preparations to hold the extraordinary congress (EOC), saying the party did not have enough money to fund it after US$60 000 went missing.

The congress is supposed to elect a successor to the late party leader, Morgan Tsvangirai, but there was no agreement on the voters roll to be used or the venue, two days before it is held.

Later in the evening, however, government gave permission for the party to hold  the congress at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).

Mudzuri said the party had no money to hold the congress after it failed to account for US$60 000 which was advanced to the party by government under the Political Parties Finance Act. It postponed the congress to Sunday from last weekend following disagreements over the voters’ roll.

Provincial structures started verifying the voters roll on Wednesday and Mudzuri said by evening yesterday, they had not finalised, raising fears that the process might not be completed since today and tomorrow are public holidays.

In a circular to delegates, Mudzuri said the problems had been compounded by confusing messages regarding the venue.

“It is quite disturbing to note that the EOC has been thrown into confusion by a cocktail of mis-endeavours or  unfortunate circumstances,” Mudzuri said.

“There are confusing messages on the venue or venues for the congress.

“As things stand, there is no money for congress as the US$60 000 meant for the party was fraudulently moved from the party’s account without the express approval of the treasurer and the standing committee.

“The voters roll had not been finalised up to 17:30hours today (yesterday),” he said.

Mudzuri said he was trying to ensure that there was a free, fair and transparent congress in line with the tenets of democracy.

“I would like to urge all eligible delegates wishing to see the survival of this great movement we started in 1999 to achieve all its set objectives to sacrifice and ensure that they come out  to cast their votes on December 27 whatever venue is finally agreed upon.

“We should never accept corrupt and abusive behaviour that we have blamed Zanu PF for over the years. All the missing money must be recovered and accounted for without delay,” he added.

Polls were postponed last weekend after interim party leader Thokozani Khupe’s backers raised concern over alleged attempts by secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora to manipulate the roll.

But Mudzuri said the party was clear that only members of the 2014 structures would vote.

Another candidate, Morgen Komichi said the congress would be held at HICC, contrary to claims by some party members on social media that it would be decentralised.

“The EOC is on, and it will be held at a single venue at the HICC. The persons that will attend are those from the 2014 structures as they are the legitimate delegates to vote,” Komichi said.

“That has been abandoned because decentralised elections are prone to violence and they are very difficult to manage. What we want is to have the whole leadership to be there at the same venue and in the event of any problem, it can be addressed quickly,” he said.

Chivi Villagers Still Need More-MDC Alliance

SO LONG A LETTER

CHIVI people still need more Mr ED

24 December 2020

CHIVI is eager for Change. CHAMISA CHETE CHETE carries our HOPE.

` “`The family cant celebrate a father who brings home vegetables and makes noise about it. The family needs meat“““

The recent Commissioning of a water tape by Mr ED Munangagwa in Chivi district is a very funny and ridiculous thing ever to be expected from a Head of State.

Chivi villagers need economic empowerment stirred up with a free and democtratic environment. The water tapes that ED boast of could have long been installed all over the country. Water is a necessity and as citizens we have the right to good heathy ,water and sanitization. The effort by the ED regime to try exaggaratte and expand a small thing in this world of advanced infrastructural development. Moreover, most political gatherings have been banned . A clear selective application of the law on this case. Zanupf regime took this opportunity to conduct a rally in the guise of a water pipeline commissioning program.

Only an insane human being can believe that Commissioning of a water tape was worth celebrating risking people from the Corona Virus. Whilst we acknowledge and also demand water tapes across all rural areas the natural resource capacity id there but has long been abused. The recent pointing of fingers, arrests and investigations amongst government officials and closests really shows us that the house is burning yet the Father wants us to celebrate. Corruption is dragging us back what we are today could have been positively multiplied long back.”…maoko evatungamiriri azere namo chavabata chinonamira…”

We needed these water pipeline schemes 15-20 years ago. We even needed them in all districts ,we wont allow you to rubberstamp your failures by commissioning a water pipeline. What would the local authorities and VEDCO reps do on their capacity when an all highly delagated team and President risk the spread of COVID 19 by gathering people Bvongwe. As for Chivi people we say lets arise and shine lets open our eyes widely, lets reason and widen up our minds. We demand a well backed up economic status where we are able to harness the water source.

We need democracy people are abducted day in day out, you know of Dzamara, Dr Mugombeyi, the recently abducted and totured trio Cecilia Chimbiri ,Johanna Mamombe and Netsai Marowa. Democracy , freedom and respect of human right are the beginning of a leaders’ wisdom. We wont get our freedom from tapes, we wont get our salaries increased by commissioning a water tape. A good leader could have been mastering and seriously working on high profile projects for the country eg installation of water tapes for the whole Masvingo Province.

The local Chivi people also need empowerment to harness the taped water. Celebrating a mere water tape alone without other backups such as highly empowerered agricultural activities with export and investor appeal and subsequently contribute to the GDP, employment creation.

As a potential green belt zone Chivi needs great projects that attract investors and create employment. The availability of Tokwe Mukosi Dam and those so called commissioned Tapes hasnt been empowered yet to support the local people and the country as a whole. As MDC A Youth we are deeply saddened because the government has done nothing to benefit the youths.

We need hortculture gardens , animal husbandry etc unique and export market projects. The problem that we have is a regime that wants to appease a few individuals for votes come next election. As MDC Alliance ours is a visionary blue print based upon creating an investor friendly country. We also advocate for great ideas and great projects that benefit the Country as whole not a village as a unity.

The Devolution thing has not been handled with competency and transparency . Leaders are not working with the local people, funding is too little to be meaningful. Illegitimacy, and lack of confidence are loopholes we look foward to fight for as MDC Alliance Youth in Masvingo. The Office of the resident Minister Chadzamira should know that our voices, cries and tears will be one day a nightmare and an avenging spirit that would haunt the pepertrators.

Mnangagwa Flies To Masvingo To Open Watertap

Tinashe Sambiri|Irate Zimbabweans have castigated Zanu PF leader, Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa for travelling all the way from Harare to Masvingo Province to open a watertap.

Irate Zimbabweans told ZimEye.com the official opening of the Chongwe Water Project could have been done by government officials in Masvingo.

“This man never ceases to amaze me- someone else was supposed to handle the programme. How can a whole President travel all the way from Harare to Masvingo Province to open a tap? Our economy is already choked,” posted Mai Lisa on Facebook.

“This is ridiculous, I think Mnangagwa is merely seeking relevance,” observed Rudo.

“The man is just confused,” commented Charmaine.

Mr Mnangagwa, who was surrounded by heavily armed soldiers and intelligence officers, commissioned the Chongwe Water Project on Sunday.

Perfect Christmas Present For Zidane

Real Madrid beat Granada 2-0 in LaLiga on Wednesday to go level on points with log leaders Atletico Madrid.

Goals by Casemiro and Karim Benzema were enough for the defending champions to collect maximum points.

Neither side could break the deadlock in the first half, which ended goalless despite Zinedine Zidane’s charges creating decent chances.

They eventually went ahead in the 57th minute, when Brazilian midfielder Casemiro brilliantly headed home man of the math Marco Asensio’s cross.

Benzema made sure all three points are taken by Los Blancos with a solo effort in stoppage time, his 12th goal of the season.-Soccer 24

Olympique Lyon Praise Kadewere

Olympique Lyon have praised striker Tino Kadewere for his start to life at the club and for his recent exploits in front of goal.

The 24-year-old, who moved to Les Gones from French Ligue 2 side Le Havre, defied odds by commanding a regular place despite walking into a side with a star-studded attack.

He has been directly involved in ten league goals for title-chasing Lyon this season, scoring 7 and providing three assists.

On the assist Kadewere provided for Lucas Paqueta on Lyon’s third goal, coach Rudi Garcia said after the match: “We had a very good year 2020. We have a series of victories, that’s the most important. We will try to get back in good shape. We will have to be ready on the 6th against Lens. I’m happy”- Soccer 24

Price Of Bread Shoots Up On Christmas Day

THE price of a standard loaf of bread has risen by 13,8 percent this week to $82 from $72 and consumers feel the move is not justified.

Some retailers, who had already effected the latest price adjustment on Wednesday, said they were caught off-guard by the latest increase by suppliers.

While the country has recently been enjoying price stability on the back of a stable exchange rate, consumers say the latest bread price increase comes as a surprise.

Confederation of Zimbabwe Retailers (CZR) president, Mr Denford Mutashu, also expressed shock but suggested that the move could be linked to rising cost of production.

“We (retailers) were caught off-guard by the increase in the price of bread but may point to continued increase in rates and utilities charges that have not respected stability in the economy brought about by the forex auction system,” he said.

“The increases in the cost of production may have piled pressure on bakers. It’s difficult to hold price as a business when costs increase.”

National Bakers Association of Zimbabwe president, Mr Dennis Wallah, had not responded to written questions from Business Chronicle by the time of going to print yesterday.

Through the weekly Foreign Currency Auction Trading System introduced in June this year, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ) has managed to stabilise the exchange rate with the Zimbabwe dollar this week easing marginally against the United States dollar to 81,78 from 81,73 last week.

National Consumer Rights Association spokesperson, Mr Effie Ncube, said as an organisation they were outraged by the conduct of the bakery industry, which has decided to raise the price of bread during the festive season.

“This will deeply affect poor and low-income households and rob them of celebrating Christmas and New Year with bread on the table.

“This price hike has no business justification whatsoever,” he said.

“It’s industry just profiteering by abusing poor consumers and taking advantage of the festive season.

“We urge the Government to step in and prevent this punitive and unjustifiable bread price hike.

“Bread is a basic commodity that should never be priced beyond low-income households who constitute the majority of consumers,” said Mr Ncube.

Meanwhile, the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) has revealed that the local milling industry’s capacity utilisation has dropped below 20 percent as maize-meal and flour imports pile pressure on local producers.

GMAZ has raised fears that the sector could suffer massive job losses due to loss of business on account of weakening grip on domestic market.

In a position paper on import duty and surtax imposition on imported mealie-meal and wheat flour, the milling industry now wants the Government to cap the quantity of imports as well as review import permits.

The Government gazetted Statutory Instrument No 119 of 2020, which suspended import duty on maize-meal and wheat flour in May this year as part of measures to enhance supplies of basics.

This was prompted by challenges in mobilising maize and wheat imports due to Covid-19-lockdown related constraints.

The Government then instructed the milling industry to also assist by importing some of the maize and wheat.

Since April, GMAZ claims that its members have imported 148 000 tonnes of wheat and 160 000 tonnes of maize.

“Regrettably the milling industry’s capacity utilisation is below 20 percent due to the local market which is flooded with imported maize-meal and wheat flour,” it said.

South Africa Closes In On One Million COVID-19 Cases

Zweli Mkhize

South Africa reported 14,305 new coronavirus cases in a 24-hour period, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 968,563, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced Thursday.

Mkhize said the country also lost 326 more people to COVID-19 related deaths, bringing the total number of fatalities to 25,983.

At least 822,978 people have recovered from the virus in the country.

South Africa is currently experiencing a second wave of the pandemic. The country experienced the peak of its first wave between July and August.
On Wednesday, Mkhize warned South Africans that the government will need to review the current restrictions and consider further measures to ensure that they curb the alarming rate of spread.

South Africa had some of the harshest COVID-19 restrictions in the world four months back which barred non-essential workers from leaving their homes, exercising outside their homes, attending church or even walking their dogs.

“We can never stress enough the need for citizens to take every precaution necessary as we celebrate the festive season and look for a reprieve from a tough year,” Mkhize said.

A Mother’s Love, Mother Killed By Train Trying To Save Son From The Same Train

State Media

A Harare woman died after she was hit by a goods train in Mabvuku while trying to save her son from being hit by the same train.

The disaster occurred as 13 more people were killed in separate road accidents recorded countrywide this week.

In the case of the Mabvuku woman, she was hit last Friday and she died this Monday after being admitted to a local hospital.

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the incident.

“A woman was hit by a goods train while trying to save her son from being hit by the train in Mabvuku on December 18, 2020. She later succumbed to the injuries on December 21, 2020 after being admitted at Parirenyatwa Hospital,” he said.

Meanwhile, two people died while five others were injured in a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on Wednesday at the 45km peg along Harare-Masvingo Road when the driver of a Mazda Axella lost control, resulting in a sideswipe with a Honda Fit travelling in the opposite direction.

On December 22, four more people died and two injured at the 30km peg along Harare-Nyamapanda Road when a motorist driving a Toyota Gaia made a U-turn in front of an oncoming haulage truck resulting in a head-on collision.

In a similar incident, three people were killed while eight others were injured at the 164km peg along the same road when a driver tried to overtake a vehicle which was in front of him resulting in a head on collision with another vehicle approaching from the opposite direction.

Asst Comm Nyathi said on December 20, at around 2040 hours, four people perished at the 385km peg along the Harare-Bulawayo Road when a motorist encroached onto the lane of oncoming traffic.

The motorist hit the right side of a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction and his vehicle overturned, resulting in the fatalities. One person was injured in the accident.

Police have advised motorists “to drive to arrive alive”, to exercise extreme caution on the road and avoid costly human errors.

They have promised to heavily deploy officers along the country’s major roads to ensure sanity.

Motorists have been urged to comply with orders from police officers manning roadblocks.

On December 19, three women and one juvenile, drowned when a motorist tried to cross a bridge on a flooded river along the Zvishavane-Mpalawane Road in Fort Rixon.

The vehicle had nine passengers on board.

“The vehicle was swept away and it overturned. The motorist is being charged with culpable homicide,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

Court Refuses To Release Prisca Mupfumira’s Passport

Prisca Mupfumira

Harare magistrate Mr Ngoni Nduna on Wednesday refused to release former Cabinet Minister Prisca Mupfumira’s diplomatic and ordinary passports, saying her application for their release was insincere.

Mr Nduna said the court saw no reason to return the passports to her as the condition set by the High Court of having them deposited with the Clerk of Court was still in force.

He said there was still need to secure Mupfumira’s attendance to court despite her saying she had so far appeared 17 times since her arrest in September 2019.

Mr Nduna, however, varied Mupfumira’s reporting conditions from twice a week to once a month.

Mupfumira had applied for release of her two passports saying she wanted to travel outside the country for medical reasons.

“The reason for variation is based on her circumstances that have changed since bail was granted in September 2019,” said Mupfumira in her application made on her behalf by her lawyer.

“She was placed on remand in July 2019 on seven counts of criminal abuse and out of seven count the State has proceeded on one count where she is jointly charged with Ngoni Masoka. She has been remanded 17 times and is advanced in age as she turns 70 early next year.

“Accused suffered respiratory problems since 2003 and had a lung removed. Because of her age, the condition is getting worse. Her frequent visit to police twice a week are exposing her and posing high risk of getting infected by coronavirus. She can report once every month to mitigate that problem.

The State, led by Mr Tafara Chirambira, opposed the application saying what Mupfumira wanted to seek outside the country was available locally.

Mr Chirambira said Mupfumira was likely to abscond if her passports were released and law enforcements agents would face difficulties in locating her in a foreign jurisdiction.

South Africa Finally Acts On Beitbridge Border Congestion, Albeit After 5 Zimbabweans Had Died

State Media

Congestion at the border

The movement of travelers through Beitbridge Border Post has relatively improved after South African authorities moved to end serious delays which saw people spending up to 48 hours to cross the border.

Long delays at the border claimed the lives of five Zimbabweans in the last five days while awaiting to be cleared out of South Africa.

Police in the neighbouring country said the causes of deaths were yet to be ascertained, although one of the victims had been confirmed to have had complications with his heart.

Limpopo police spokesperson, Brigadier Motlafela Mopjapelo confirmed the deaths last night.

“We have recorded a total of five deaths at the border. These include three women and two men.

“The two women died on Wednesday, another woman died today at the Home Affairs departure bay. The truck driver who is said to have had a heart problem, died on Thursday, while another man died on the same day at Shell filling station,” said Brig Mojapelo.

Limpopo’s Department of Transport spokesperson, Mr Matome Moremi, said a team led by the director of Traffic and Community Safety, Mr Allen Matsila was already at work on the ground decongesting the N1 highway to push the clearance of northbound traffic.

“What we are doing is the separation of traffic into heavy and light vehicles. The light vehicles are being directed to a holding place at the Musina Showgrounds as soon as they arrive in Musina. From there, they are being cleared into the border post in batches,” he said.

Mr Moremi said the decongestion plan had started paying dividends since they had managed to clear the gridlock on the 12km stretch leading to the border post.

He said commercial trucks were being processed separately considering they would be transporting essential cargo.

The official said the long queues were a result of a curfew that was being implemented after 10pm in that country in line with Covid-19 containment protocols.

Zimbabwe’ Ambassador to South Africa, Mr David Hamadziripi said Harare and Pretoria were already in contact with a view to finding a sustainable solution to the delays currently being experienced by travellers at Beitbridge Border Post.

“It is our expectation that the results of these efforts will be discernible very soon,” said the Ambassador.

Assistant Regional Immigration Officer-in-charge of Beitbridge, Mr Nqobile Ncube said the traffic flow had greatly improved and there were in constant touch with their counterparts to address bottlenecks as and when they arose.

“Our counterparts in South Africa have managed to unlock the traffic problems which they have been having.

As we speak, traffic is moving smoothly to both sides of the border and on our side, we have kicked in a rapid response mechanism to speed up the flow of both human and cargo traffic,” he said.

An average of 6 500 travellers, 1 200 commercial trucks and 2 500 light vehicles are passing through the border daily, with truckers being the hardes hit since they started experiencing long delays three weeks ago.

“If You Misbehave, We Will Fire You,” Mnangagwa Warns Newly Elected DCC Chairpersons

President Emmerson Mnangagwa

PARTY leaders who were recently elected in District Coordinating Committee (DCC) elections should follow the Zanu PF constitution or risk expulsion if they engage in counterproductive plots, President Mnangagwa said.

Addressing hundreds of people, including Zanu PF supporters at Jenya Secondary School in Chivi North after DCC chairpersons for all the seven districts in Masvingo had been introduced to him by the party national political commissar Victor Matemadanda, the President underscored the importance of unity in the revolutionary party.

“My message to those who were elected into the DCCs is that the party (Zanu PF) has a constitution and that constitution must be followed. Those who will try to burn midnight candles trying to make plots and sub-plots will be suspended and expelled from the party. There is no room for such leaders in Zanu PF. We do not countenance members who take issues outside the party, there are channels and procedures to be followed when members want redress,” he said.

The President said the DCCs should strengthen the party, urging those who lost to graciously accept the results and work towards ensuring the party wins the 2023 elections resoundingly.

He chronicled the history of DCCs from the time when they were disbanded in 2014 until their revival in 2019.

“As you know we used to have DCCs some time back and when we were approaching party internal elections the chorus across the whole country within the DCCs was that they wanted Mnangagwa (to be party Vice President at the time) and those who were in control at that time said let’s do away with them and they were disbanded,” said President Mnangagwa.

“However after that at our last party annual conference it was resolved that the DCCs be brought back. It’s the people who said they must be brought back and the voice of the people is the voice of God, so the DCCs are back.”

President Mnangagwa added that there is no need for genuine cadres to fight for positions as those who remain loyal would always be rewarded for their unwavering support and leadership.

He said leaders who thought they were bigger than Zanu PF would always be proved wrong, with those who will try to use their new positions in the revived DCCs to foment divisions going to be checkmated.

The Zanu PF First Secretary reiterated the importance of unity and selfless sacrifice which was a hallmark of all yesteryear party greats and icons who took up arms to liberate the country.

“Every time there is a contest for positions within a party there is bound to be clashes and fights but at the end the winner should be humble enough to embrace the loser and say let us work together for the good of the party and the same applies to the loser, the loser should always be bold enough to work with the winner to take the party forward,” he said.

“Loyal cadres always remain consistent and unwavering and the people will always reward them for that at the end, because they would have seen the track record of loyalty.”

In his address at the same event, Matemadanda had warned Zanu PF members across the country to refrain from creating fissures in the party over DCC polls, saying those with grievances should use party channels to air them.

Khupe Congress Called Off Again

Thokozani Khupe

THE government has barred interim MDC leader Thokozani Khupe from holding the party’s planned extra-ordinary congress slated for December 27 – until the coronavirus pandemic is under control in the country.

The decision by authorities to stop the party from going ahead with its extra-ordinary congress followed a recent letter to the government by Khupe – in which she asked for clearance from the Health ministry for the gathering, which was due to be attended by 4 500 delegates.

The MDC-T led by interim president Thokozani Khupe had rescheduled its extraordinary congress to 27 December.
The elective congress to choose a new president to replace the late founding leader Morgan Tsvangirai was scheduled to this Saturday at the Harare International Conference Centre (HICC).

However, the event was cancelled due to sharp differences among the contesting candidates, Khupe, Douglas Mwonzora, Elias Mudzuri and Morgen Komichi, and addressing the media last Saturday afternoon, MDC-T acting spokesperson, Tapiwa Mashakada confirmed the embattled opposition party had resolved to postponed its congress to 27 December.

Mashakada claimed the sticking issues that forced the party to postpone its congress were a shambolic voters’ roll and other logistical challenges in bringing 4 500 delegates to the congress venue.

This time another postponement has been reported by an online news site, bulawayo24, despite approval being granted earlier by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga.

The report however did not cite any official by name. – this article is being updated…

FULL TEXT: Information Minister Monica Mutsvangwa Mourns Late Veteran Journalist Foster Dongozi

CONDOLENCE MESSAGE BY THE MINISTER OF INFORMATION, PUBLICITY AND BROADCASTING SERVICES, SENATOR MONICA MUTSVANGWA, ON THE PASSING ON OF THE SECRETARY GENERAL OF THE ZIMBABWE UNION OF JOURNALISTS, FOSTER VULINDLELA DONGOZI

I am deeply saddened by the passing on of Foster Dongozi, the Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) on Wednesday night of 23 December 2020. Mr Dongozi started feeling unwell on Saturday 19 December 2020 after attending a Media Training workshop on the ‘Transitional Stabilisation Programme Successes and National Development Strategy 1 Reporting’ in Gweru and succumbed to breathing complications on admission at Parirenyatwa Hospital.

A towering figure in the media industry, Foster’s journey in the media sector began when he trained in journalism at the Harare Polytechnic. Over the years, he horned his skill at various institutions across the globe including Cairo, Egypt; Berlin, Germany and Cardiff, Wales, in the United Kingdom.

He worked as a journalist at The Standard, Daily News and The Chronicle. As he grew in the industry, he worked as Editor for: Disability Rights Up; Sexual Harassment in the Media Research; and, Women Walk Silently to Parliament. Foster also worked as a correspondent to: the Drum Magazine; United Nations Integrated Regional Information Networks (IRIN); and, New York Times. As testimony of his excellence in the journalism profession, Foster was the Environmental Journalist of the Year in 1998 and the News Reporter of the Year in 2003.

In recognition of his leadership qualities, Foster was elected General Council Member of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU); Executive Committee Member of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ); Executive Member of the Federation of African Journalists (FAJ); and, President of ZUJ and later its Secretary General, a post he held till his untimely demise.

At a time when Zimbabwe was under siege from some Western media houses that were working in cahoots with countries that had been miffed by Zimbabwe’s Land Reform Programme, Foster as President of ZUJ, worked with the then Ministry of Media, Information and Publicity to host the Federation of African Journalists congress in Zimbabwe in 2010. The event helped to reveal the true story of Zimbabwe, including the Land Reform Programme, to African media.

Foster was a unifying and harmonising figure in the media industry whose main focus was press freedom and the welfare of journalists. In fact one of my first meetings as Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services was with Foster in his capacity as ZUJ Secretary General. He seemingly had come to assess if really as the Second Republic we were serious about media reform or just paying lip service. Out of that first engagement came successive meetings; a new cordial and professional relationship between Government and the media; participation and cooperation in outreach programmes that sought to reform the media sector in Zimbabwe leading to the repeal of the Access to Information and Protection of Privacy Act (AIPPA) as well as the enactment process of the successor acts.

May I on behalf of the Ministry of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services, the Government of Zimbabwe and my family express my deep and profound condolences to the Dongozi family, his friends and the media fraternity at large. The loss is not only to his family and friends but to the whole nation. May his soul rest in internal peace.

AFRICA: The Last Ghanaian Electoral Event And Its Inconsistent Calculus

An opinion on the last Ghanaian electoral event and its inconsist calculus- ought to take account of the following:

Preamble :

First and foremost, an open minded person has to gracefully laud and excellently applaud the Dr Afari Djan’s Electoral Commission (EC) team, who navigated the electoral processes and events from 1992 till 2012; where he maintained/sustained a fragile democratic experiment through the apt institutionalization of an Inter- Party Advisory Committee (IPAC)- whose decisions were consensus based and highly respected.

Sovereign Right :

In the exercise of any type of democratic obligation- constitute a right of an individual citizen to exercise without fear nor intimidation of a franchise at a given designated space or polling station by law.

To ignore the will and wish of a voter through a distorted calculus at a collation point prefers a blatant disregard for the basic sovereign right of the individual as enshrined in the 1992 Constitution of Ghana and UN Conventions on human rights; and could amounts to a forceful seizure of an individual political power of the thumb.

Indeed, one agrees that elections are all about counting heads and not cutting heads.

Alien Democracy :

From historical hindsight, the current four year cycle of electioneering is an enveloped neocolonial system pushed through the throats of Africans.

After independence, the healthy growth of the newly born independent states from colonial economies didn’t go done well with colonialists.
It’s like the Biblical narrative of Moses and Pharaoh- let my people go;
After they left- Pharaoh pursued them because of their economic labour.
Now, military adventurism like coups were encouraged immediately to destabilize these newly born progressive states.
That, neocolonial military rule also got unpopular and so was the quick introduction of the current western style democratic alternatives, which creates tensions during its peak period of political elections.

Democratic Abuses :

The colossal amount of resources and physical cash poured into these elections are unbelievably frightening because such quantum of money could wisely be redirected into job creation for the youth and other progressive socio-economic ventures for national growth and prosperity.

In the current so called democratic dispensation, it is becoming obvious that the fight for Presidency is not a fight to serve but rather to be served at the detriment of the suffering masses engulfed in enormous quagmire of hopelessness and poverty- a complete departure from the good governance leadership style of Malaysia, Singapore and many others.

The Media :

Some of the media outfits who are to protect the masses from abuses engineered by actors of this alien democratic practice have failed in some instances to adhere to their core and basic mandate of fair reportage and truth regarding realities governing activities on the days of voting and are allegedly being described as being induced to compromise good elections results, making futile the efforts of citizens who have sacrificed to queue and vote.

The Ghanaian elections as depicted by the conflicting and unstable figures suggest a flawed one ab-intio, which could set dangerous precedence for social instability.

Fair Judiciary :

The Malawian courts recently became an envy of the world for turning down a flawed election.

The Kenyan courts did same some few years back.

Can the Courts in Ghana survive the test of pronouncing an independent ethical, fair and unbiased judgement on the current electoral process?

To guarantee and respect the wish and will of the electorate, is the wisdom to conduct an open forensic audit of votes cast from all polling stations by experts, guided by the electoral laws of Ghana.

Observers :

Ghana is not an island but a player in the comity of nations. Hence, the reports of the AU, ECOWAS and EU, ought to be seriously examined.

In the Cote d’ivoire, Burundi, Zimbabwe and other parts of Africa, electoral disagreements have left many heads not counted with consequential damages to socio-economic gains.

Conclusion :

It is upon facts surrounding the unhealthy democratic scenarios/practices in Africa, that in a letter to H E President Lazarus M Chakwera of the African State of Malawi – a suggestion has been put to the fore-as an alternative democratic model for the people of Africa.

AFRICA MUST UNITE.

OPINION: Who Has Destroyed The Country?

By Leonard Koni| The country is troubled to the borne marrow. It is so disheartening that those who destroyed the country through nepotism, corruption, poor governance and thieving are telling the people that they should unite and build the nation.

Who actually destroyed the country?
Zanu PF led by the late Robert Mugabe Mugabe inherited the country from the colonial rule when it was a jewel of Africa and as a promising nation.

Unfortunately due to greediness and insatiable appetite for power in Zanu PF’s  government the country squandered what appeared to be a golden opportunity and switched on the destruction mode.
Mugabe was a monumental failure in economics and we continue to see the same failure in Mnangagwa.

The new political design of this government has not gotten us out of the old dispensation system. The destruction continues unabated.
A lot of people have not seen any improvement or change from the way things were being done in the past and present.

Hunger and poverty still grip the vulnerable people both in rural and urban areas. Everyday you wake up, you see gloomy faces all over. The country is at crossroads.
This narrative of rebuilding the nation is just a cover up or a diversionary tactic from the real challenges facing this government, like corruption, incompetence, maladministration and abuse of public funds.

The new republic mantra is just surviving on paper but in reality there is nothing happening on the ground besides bulldozing peoples’ homes down, launching books and a national dress.

We keep on pumping money into this fashion charade when our hospitals are drug less. People are dying due to lack of medical drugs and state of the art  facilities. Zimbabwe is a very rich country endowed with vast mineral deposits but its people continue to wallow in poverty in a country of plenty.

When they went to fight for the liberation of the country, they said the country belonged to the future generations but today they are singing from a different script.

Top government officials continue to go and receive treatment outside the country shunning their own poor health facilities which have collapsed.

We still have poor road network but we waste time and resources concentrating on launching economic blue prints, books and dresses. Misplaced priorities and policy inconsistencies are the order of the day.

A nation that pulls its resources and effort in launching a national dress when its health sector is collapsing simply shows it is not proactive and up to scratch.

It would be naive for them not to admit that, it was them in the first place who destroyed this country. It was destroyed under their watch through corruption, embelzzelment of funds, lack of supervision of public funds, awarding themselves fat perks, plundering resources and there is nothing which will reassure the citizens that they have new found abilities.

This old dispensation which is now calling itself the new dispensation will argue that the country was destroyed by the late Robert Mugabe yet the leadership which is here, was part and parcel of the previous regime which destroyed the country under its watch.

President Emmerson  Mnangagwa and his cabin crew are the most people in the history of Zimbabwe hiding under the new dispensation pretending as if they are rebuilding the country.

These people were in Mugabe’s government since 1970 and the new generation cannot expect them to change but are getting this country worse by the day. In fact they have nothing to lose.

Today President Emmerson Mnangagwa and July Moyo are just copying and pasting from the old regime using the same dirty tactics of the late Robert Mugabe and Ignatious Chombo of capturing Harare City Council. In 2003 Chombo fired MDC Mayor and thirteen MDC Councillors.

He then appointed a Zanu PF puppet Commission to run Harare City Council and nothing improved. There is nothing new to emulate from this new republic and telling the people to rebuild what they destroyed does not make sense. They should be ashamed of what they did during the past forty years in power.

The continued hatred of any opposing forces and voices in the country also creates a vacuum of giving a chance to progressive ideas and flourishing of democracy. Choking democracy is tantamount to destruction of a nation.

I have come to a conclusion that, the country has successfully ignored bread and butter issues whilst resources are being plundered and wasted on a national dress, surely Zimbabwe needs a new crop of leadership just like an excessive smoking car which will need a new set of rings.

Low Christmas As House Ceiling Bursts In Flames

A Bulawayo family will have a bleak Christmas after a fire destroyed their house in Paddonhurst suburb yesterday.
The fire that caused damage running into millions of dollars is suspected to have been caused by an electrical fault. Neighbours told a Chronicle news crew that there was a loud explosion just before the house burst into flames.

Ms Tendai Munofa (24) who was sleeping in the house woke up to billowing smoke at around 9am. She said at first, she tried to ignore the smell of something burning because she thought it was coming from a neighbouring house.

As the smell grew stronger, she realised that it was coming from her landlord’s bedroom which she tried to open but failed since it was locked.

“thick smoke was coming from the landlord’s room. I tried to open his door to no avail. I realised at that moment there were flames coming from under the door. I started picking things from my room and throwing them outside through the window,” said Ms Munofa.

She said she had to abandon her frantic efforts when she saw the ceiling bursting into an orange ball of flames.

“I only managed to get a few things out and most of my stuff including certificates got burnt in the house. When my landlord came it was too late for us to put the fire out,” said Ms Munofa.

Neighbours, she said, helped her to call the Fire Brigade. A Chronicle news crew observed the Fire Brigade team scrambling to put out the inferno that was threatening to spread to the next property in the semi-detached houses.

Six teams, each with high pressure pipes directed jets of water at flames at different corners of the house.

Neighbours gathered around and watched in apparent horror as the fire consumed the house. Some scurried to help push out two vehicles that were parked in the yard. The well-coordinated fire team put the fire out in about 30 minutes.

Mr Naison Haruzivishe, the owner of the house said he received a call from Ms Munofa informing him that the house was on fire as he was attending to personal business in the city centre.

He could not hold back his grief as he narrated his loss. “I have lost all I had worked for. All my property is gone. It was worth about $5 million. I don’t know where I shall sleep,” he said.

A neighbour who spoke to Chronicle on condition of anonymity said: “I heard a sound like a bomb coming from my neighbour’s house. When I checked I discovered that the house was totally covered in smoke.”

Acting Chief Fire Officer for Bulawayo Mr Jabulani Ndlovu said investigations into the cause of the fire were underway.

“We are still investigating but preliminary results point to electrical faults. The value of the destroyed property is not yet known but it would run into millions of dollars since the whole roof, ceiling, paint work, inbuilt wardrobes would need replacement, said Mr Ndlovu.

“This was a bad Christmas eve for the Paddonhurst family and we would like to warn the public to be vigilant concerning electrical faults and engage competent electricians to attend to them. We request the public to keep the emergency numbers- 993 and 994 or (2922) 71717-9- in their cellphones because driving to the nearest station is time consuming and it causes serious delays in our intervention,” added Mr Ndlovu.

Following the tragic incident, Ms Munofa appealed to members of the public for assistance since all her clothes and food were destroyed by the fire. – Chronicle

Bleak Christmas For Byo Family As Fire Destroys House Day Before Fete

Mandatory Quarantining For Entrants

Returning residents without valid PCR negative Covid-19 test certificates will undergo mandatory quarantine while visitors without the certificates will be denied entry as Zimbabwe enforces public health controls to minimise risks of spreading Covid-19 infections.

Those leaving Zimbabwe must also have such certificates. Zimbabwe and South Africa, which have similar health rules, are working together to smoothen operations at Beitbridge Border Post to handle huge numbers of travellers this festive holiday, largely by having checks done before people arrive to clog the approaches to the border.

The Ad Hoc Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Covid-19 yesterday urged Zimbabweans not to loosen their guard after a new variant of the virus was detected in South Africa, with Zimbabweans being implored to forgo traditional Christmas festivities to stop infection rates rising.

Taskforce member and Minister of Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Monica Mutsvangwa, announced the enforcement of travel measures and warned of higher risks yesterday.

“All persons traveling in or out or transiting through Zimbabwe should possess a valid PCR negative Covid-19 certificate from certified local and international laboratories. In this regard, any returnee without the required PCR certificate will be put under mandatory quarantine.

“All foreigners who do not present valid PCR negative Covid-19 certificates will be denied entry into the country, and all persons who wish to travel outside the country should not present themselves at ports of entry and exit without the requisite PCR certificates,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

She said decongestion measures at the ports wre being implemented, including setting up of check points prior to arrival at the border posts. Law enforcement agents had been deployed to enforce adherence.

Minister Mutsvangwa confirmed that meetings were being held between Zimbabwe and South Africa to address the congestion at Beitbridge.

Minister Mutsvangwa thanked Zimbabweans for standing with their Government and supporting efforts put in place to curb the pandemic.

“My fellow Zimbabweans, we have come so far and despite our losses. We have continued to be resilient. Let us keep up our fighting spirit, as this is the only way we can win the war against Covid-19.”

She acknowledged festive holidays were associated with merrymaking but reminded the nation of the new normal where large gatherings are banned.

“The threat posed by Covid-19 has not receded but has increased as there is a new strain of the virus. Now more than ever, we need to practice protective and preventive measures such as wearing our masks in public spaces, washing or sanitizing our hands and physical distancing,” said Minister Mutsvangwa.

“High level meetings have been held between Zimbabwe and South Africa, as part of efforts to address challenges and ensure the smooth flow of traffic at Beitbridge Border Post,” she said.

Speaking at the same briefing Minister of Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Kazembe Kazembe said his ministry was collaborating with their South African counterparts in this regard.

Vice chairman of the Inter-Ministerial Taskforce on Covid-19, Professor Amon Murwira, talked of the new variant that has been detected in other countries, emphasising the importance of not loosening guard.

“We are in a new normal. What it means is that we know there is Covid-19, and there is a new variant which is being reported internationally. We cannot lose our guard. While we enjoy our Christmas we want to enjoy it alive by observing all the measures that have been put in place,” he said.

Deputy Minister of Health and Child Care Dr John Mangwiro explained the nature of viruses which he said tend to mutate. His emphasis was to avoid unnecessary travel and implored total adherence to containment measures.

“Viruses continuously mutate. Let’s keep safe, and the best treatment is prevention and we are all aware of the several measures, sanitisation, social distancing, wearing of face masks and not travel unnecessarily, let’s stay home let’s stay safe.” -Herald

Civil Protection Unity On High Alert Despite Met Office Understatement On Cyclone Building Up In The Indian Ocean

Department of Civil Protection director, Mr Nathan Nkomo

Government has mobilised Civil Protection Unit (CPU) teams which are on high alert, especially in the eastern parts of the country, amid reports of Cyclone Chalane which is reportedly building up in the Indian Ocean.

The cyclone is expected to hit parts of Manicaland next week.

President Mnangagwa yesterday said the Government had already been proactive on the looming natural disaster.

He said CPU teams had been activated to manage the impact of the cyclone in the event that it hits eastern parts of the country next week as anticipated.

There were fears the cyclone could be destructive like Cyclone Idai which hit parts of Manicaland 21 months ago.

“We hear that a cyclone similar to Idai is building up in the ocean (Indian) and it can come here so we are warning our people especially in Manicaland that is areas like Chipinge and Chimanimani and surrounding places.”

“The cyclone can hit those areas next week so we are putting our CPU teams on alert so that if it happens, we will be ready and we can move our people to higher ground,” said the President.

He bemoaned the deadly effects of cyclones, saying Zimbabwe still had fresh memories of Cyclone Idai which killed thousands of people and left over 600 locals unaccounted for.

Idai ravaged infrastructure such as schools, clinics, roads and bridges and derailed Government’s plans to grow the economy as funds for key projects had to be diverted to mitigate effects of the disaster.

Few Indian Ocean cyclones get as far as Zimbabwe, but Chalane is on a course for Beira, so Zimbabwean officials are getting ready.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Mr Jason Nicholls tweeted yesterday that the tropical cyclone may strike north-east Madagascar on Saturday or Sunday and possibly move towards Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

Department of Civil Protection (DCP) director Mr Nathan Nkomo told The Herald yesterday that there was an Emergency Services sub-committee meeting to plan for any cyclone.

“We are prepared. Remember, before we develop a contingency plan, it requires funding and this funding was approved by Cabinet in November,” said Mr Nkomo.

“But as for tropical Cyclone Chalane, we met today as the Emergency Services cub-committee of the National Civil Protection Committee.

“The Meteorological Services Department has indicated that it is monitoring developments in the eastern parts of Mozambique hourly and from 31 December to the 1 January, they will continue to monitor whether the cyclone will affect Zimbabwe or not.”

Mr Nkomo said the social media had helped spread the message about the potential cyclone in the provinces, although their structures were on the ground to raise awareness without causing pandemonium.

Representatives from the Public Service and Social Welfare Ministry and the Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage Ministry were part of yesterday’s meeting to plan for food and shelter provision and the rescue of marooned people.

Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) officials also attended as they will be responsible for monitoring river levels.

Mr Nkomo said they agreed to come up with a priority plan, adding that there was need for the identification of institutions that would be used to house any people displaced by the cyclone or needing emergency shelter.

“The institutions should be within reach and technically they should be boarding schools given their infrastructure,” he said.

Traditional leaders have been engaged to raise awareness in their areas, prepare people for evacuation should the need arise, while those taking medication, for instance, should have their tablets at hand.

In terms of transport, the DCP will discuss the logistics with ZUPCO in mind to ensure the movement of people is done with dignity.

Should the situation deteriorate, any mode of transport will be used.

Chimanimani East legislator, Cde Joshua Sacco said awareness campaigns had started while the Chimanimani District Civil Protection Unit had an emergency meeting yesterday to chart the way forward.

He said he was raising awareness about the potential cyclone on his Facebook page, but was unaware at this stage, of the path the cyclone would take.

“We have started awareness campaigns and this afternoon (yesterday) the Chimanimani District Civil Protection Unit met to discuss modalities on preparedness and I the central Government will come in to assist.

“But it is only after the cyclone hits Mozambique that we will start considering evacuations. At this stage, we have not started evacuations because the cyclone may change path and go south or north.”

Tens Of Thousands To Spend Christmas And Boxing Day Holidays In Deadly Queues At Beitbridge Border Post

Traffic over Beitbridge between South Africa and Zimbabwe, Africa’s busiest border crossing, has ground to a near standstill over the past five days, with authorities battling to process hundreds of thousands of people making their way home for the holiday season.

Delays at the border, which traverses the Limpopo river, have been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic, with many people failing to get the required testing to cross, and curfew restrictions resulting in early close of the posts, Johannesburg-based broadcaster eNCA reported. Fifteen people have died over the past week while waiting in scorching heat in lines that stretch for least 15 kilometers (9 miles), it said.

South Africa, which has the continent’s most industrialized economy, was host to about 4.2 million migrants last year, United Nations data show. Many return home for Christmas and New Year, with Zimbabwe one of the main destinations and transit routes.

Beitbridge Congestion Death Toll Goes Up, Five More Die

Five people have died in what has been described as the worst congestion in the history of the Beitbridge border post.

Queues of trucks and other vehicles are reaching 20km in both directions at the Musina, Limpopo, border crossing — and truck drivers are taking up to nine days to get into Zimbabwe, according to the Road Freight Association (RFA).

The association said the crisis was unacceptable as thousands of people had been stranded with no facilities or amenities to accommodate them.

“The freight situation is desperate … This is the worst congestion in the history of Beitbridge. Queues stretch out from the border to Musina on the South African side and on the Zimbabwe side along the Beitbridge-Harare highway and the Bulawayo road,” said Gavin Kelly, CEO of the RFA.

“Trucks are on every street and all over in the surrounding towns. Though congestion at Beitbridge has been a challenge for some time, the Covid-19 checks and curfews have severely worsened this. With proper planning, this nightmare could have been avoided,” he said.

Covid-19 checks and curfew add to Beitbridge border traffic jam

NEWS2 days ago
The association said it was aware of the deaths of four drivers. They died “in their trucks due the dire situation and conditions — with unconfirmed reports of another seven from local SAPS authorities”.

Provincial police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the deaths of five people — two women who died on Tuesday, a truck driver who died on Wednesday, a man who died in the early hours of Thursday and another who died later in the day.

Mojapelo said police had opened inquest dockets for the deceased, except for two people who had existing medical conditions.

The situation was being monitored, he said.

Growing risks
The association expressed concern at the risks and dangers drivers had been exposed to.

“Exhaustion is a reality and this affects the ability to function effectively and drive safely. Drivers are not able to perform at their best and therefore safety is compromised. This is a serious concern,” said Kelly.

He said most drivers were not sitting in their trucks but were continuously walking up and down the queue trying to investigate the cause of delays, while others were fighting those who try to bribe their way through.

“Criminals are also taking advantage of the situation and trucks and trailers are being broken into and looted,” Kelly said.

The association also expressed concern at say that some drivers paid up to R1,000 to skip the queue.

“The more you pay, the better your chance to get clear to the front. Those who stand innocently in queue waiting their turn stand for weeks in the same position. This dire situation cannot continue — it is affecting the lives of our drivers, the surrounding areas, consumers and business.

“The delays have cost more than R700m to date and this figure is going to increase substantially. This crisis could have been avoided. We call on government to take speedy action to address this,” said the RFA.

Ginimbi’s Best Friend Dies Of Coronavirus

A South African-based Zimbabwean businessman Victor Jimere also know as Boss Vickela or 1 Bulk reportedly succumbed to COVID-19 in South Africa yesterday, ZimMorning post reports.

Boss Vickela who was the late socialite and businessman Genius Ginimbi Kadungunge’s friend was diagnosed with COVID-19 last week according to a source that spoke to the publication and said:

He was diagnosed of Covid-19 last week and I don’t know how it took him so fast.

We are hurt, he was a jolly good man and he has lost a vacuum in our circle of friends.

Last month it was Ginimbi (Kadungure) and now its him, its sad mate.

According to the publication, Vickela who was an electrician by profession relocated to South Africa from Botswana in 2016:

Jimere was an electrician by profession and his business empire was under the banner of his holding company Inex Investments.

His company had footprints in grinding mill manufacturing, trucking, and fuel supply chain among others.

However, information gathered by Zim Morning Post established that Jimere left more than P10 million tax arrears due to Botswana Unified Revenue Service (BURS).

This resulted in his deportation from Botswana in 2016, forcing his relocation to South Africa where he quickly picked up his pieces.

He reportedly revived his fortunes through the help of fellow Zimbabweans like Kit Kat, Uncle Roland, Chiyangwa and Mike Chimombe according to another source that told the publication that:

When he was deported from Botswana in 2016, some of his properties were confiscated by the government and forfeited to the State.

Some top politicians tried to assist but the pressure was too much because he was accused of funding one of the opposition political leaders’ activities and campaigns.

So when he was deported, he had to use his network of fellow Zimbabweans to rise from the ashes and he did.

Confirmed PSL Starting In Feb 2021

ZIFA board member Sugar Chagonda has confirmed the 2021 Premiership football season will begin in February.

The 2020 season was wiped by the Covid-19 pandemic before it had even started.

There were indications that some mini tournaments pitting top-flight teams in a bio-secure bubble would be played this month.

But the costs involved coupled with lack of corporate sponsorship meant the proposed competition that would have marked the return of football in the country failed to take off.

Premiership teams, the only tier allowed to resume football by the authorities, have since gone for breaks with the majority of them resuming training early next month.

There is still confusion among Premiership teams as they claim they haven’t been informed on the date the 2021 season will start though.

But Chagonda, who was one of the high-ranking football officials to attend a grassroots tournament held to celebrate Black Rhinos secretary-general Edward Mutukwa’s elevation in the Zimbabwe National Army in Chiweshe on Tuesday, confirmed the new season will begin in February.

“The 2020 football season was washed away by the pandemic as you may all be aware,” said Chagonda.

“Both the top-flight and First Division football season as well as all other divisions were supposed to start the 2020 term in April this year. “Unfortunately, the pandemic put paid to the plans. As a result, the players took time at home training alone until just recently when Premiership teams were allowed to return to group training.

“We are working to make sure all the football divisions return to action in a safe manner. The 2021 season will start in February or if that doesn’t happen then latest will be in early March.” Chagonda said it was imperative for football to be played in all the corners of the country. “ZIFA takes grassroots football seriously and it is through these structures that the future of the game depends on.

“We are happy to see football being played in all the corners of the country. This is in tandem with our vision and we support initiatives like these.”

The celebratory match, which featured Chiweshe Select against Zimbabwe Defence Forces Senior Officers, saw Black Rhinos chief scout Stanford “Stix” Mutizwa handpicking three youngsters who will join the army side’s development team.

Mutizwa said there is vast untapped talent in the country’s rural areas which authorities need to develop. “I am awed by the level of talent in the rural areas. Look, most of the scouts in the country look at such areas like Mbare or Mufakose forgetting that we have had so many players who have come from the rural areas and have done so well. “I am impressed by the level of talent that I have seen here in Chiweshe and I am taking at least three youngsters to Black Rhinos juniors.

“I will go around all corners of the country to search for raw talent and with what I have seen here, I am sure I won’t be disappointed.”

Mutukwa, who was elected into the Rhinos executive early this year, has made inroads into the local football fraternity and has transformed the army team into a professional entity. While other teams have complained of non-payment of salaries, Black Rhinos players have religiously received theirs and just last month, they were rewarded with hampers.

Mutukwa was recently promoted to the rank of substantive Colonel from Lieutenant Colonel, a feat which he decided to celebrate with his kith and kin in Chiweshe.

He also donated football kits and footballs.

Rhinos have so far added former Dynamos striker Kuda Kumwala on their roster and dropped ex-Monomotapa attacker Osbourne Mukuradare.

“Keep Calm,” Met Office Warns On Cyclone Building Up In The Indian Ocean

The Meteorological Services Department has advised the public to be calm but keep informed as the anticipated cyclone is still a tropical depression and far off.

This comes as a tropical cyclone which according to the MSD is yet to be named is expected to hit some parts of Chimanimani next week.

If the cyclone hits Chimanimani, this will be the second time the area would have been affected by a cyclone in 21 months, after Cyclone Idai left a trail of death, destruction and displacement of people in March last year.

Government has already mobilised Civil Protection teams which are on high alert especially in the eastern parts of the country.

In an advisory early this morning, the MSD said the tropical was currently in the far Indian Ocean.

“A, yet to be named, Tropical Depression is situated in a quasi-stationary position near the centre of the Indian Ocean, to the north east of Mauritius, to the far east of Madagascar.

“On Thursday December 24, 0200hrs it was near 14degress south and 60 degrees east and expected to track southwestward towards Madagascar in the coming days as it steadily intensifies (might later become a tropical storm then a Cyclone,” said the MSD.

All the cyclones and Tropical storms that affect Zimbabwe emanate from the Mozambique Channel but depending on their trajectory or path, some of them tend to dry out while others bring significant rainfall over the country.

Noting that these tropical storms also tend to weaken when they fall on land; the current system is anticipated to make initial land over Madagascar on Sunday December 27, and rejuvenate in the Mozambique Channel around

Tuesday, December 2020. However due to the nature of such systems this path and speed can change drastically.

“The Meteorological Services Department will continue to monitor intensity as well as the trajectory and update the public accordingly,” said the MSD.

VP Chiwenga’s Donated Heifers Die

By A Correspondent- Twenty-four of the 100 heifers donated to Buhera villagers four months ago by Vice President Constantine Chiwenga have died.

The heifers were donated under the Heifer Pass on Scheme to replenish thousands of herds of cattle lost to bovine theileriosis (January disease), a tick-borne disease.

Masvingo Mirror reported that sources say the livestock succumbed drought, lack of supplements and proper care.

The Heifer Pass on Scheme was intended to benefit poor villagers but the scheme was reportedly hijacked by senior Zanu PF officials in the district.

Farmers who received the heifers are supposed to pass them on when they have new calves, therefore, the pass on the programme has been severely incapacitated by the 24 deaths.

Buhera District veterinary officer, Doctor Samson Chiduku told Masvingo Mirror that his office is incapacitated to monitor the project and he does not have information on the heifers.

He said:

We don’t have fuel to monitor the heifers. We, therefore, have not visited the farmers and do not have information on what is happening.

Some farmers are reportedly selling away the heifers for US$100 when they become too weak to walk while others are slaughtering them for meat.-MasvingoMirror

Demand Arrest Of Chicken Thieves Not Wildlife Poachers’ – Animal Rights Tell Africans

By Emmanuel Koro- One of the most curious and harmful lessons that Western animal rights groups continue to teach African rural communities co-existing with wildlife and the African public, in general, is ‘demand the arrest chicken thieves and not wildlife poachers.’

As can be witnessed anywhere on the continent, the African villagers and the public can readily demand the arrest of anyone, even the most powerful political elites, if they dare steal their chickens, goats and cows but not so for poaching wildlife such as elephants and rhinos. Why? It’s because the more the Western animal rights continue to succeed in restricting benefits from African wildlife, the more they teach African people to place no value on it and then see no need to demand the arrest of wildlife poachers.

Without benefits from wildlife, Africans would rather help poachers to poach wildlife. This is why poaching is increasing rapidly in Africa. For instance, the poaching of eight rhinos worth millions of US dollars(for hunting and horn value) in South Africa, Kwazulu Natal, Hluhluwe-Imfolozi National Park in one week, in November 2020 should have sparked a nationwide public protest. Well known for protesting against the looting of state assets, including the taxpayers’ money, South Africa’s labour movement and vocal political parties did not make a single protest statement. Yet, this was a bold and shameless looting of state assets worth millions of US dollars.

No surprises for lack of public protest against wild wealth, because the Western animal rights’ politics and business interests of restricting benefits from African wild trade is bad education for Africans because it keeps the African public unaware of the huge wealth that wildlife can bring to Africa, including job creation opportunities. There are numerous cases of massive poaching of elephants and rhinos, including looting of ivory and rhino horn that the African public has not protested against. Therefore, African observers have suggested that until we get to a stage of stopping Western animal rights from restricting wild trade so that full and fair wildlife ownership benefits should go to the communities, wildlife shall continue to be harmed by poachers with no public protest. Curiously, the poachers and animal rights are currently the direct and indirect beneficiaries of Africa’s wild wealth that should instead benefit the African public.

“The African communities that co-exist with wild animals as neighbours need financial incentives to look after both habitat and wildlife,” said Namibia-based safari operator, Mr Robin Hurt. Take this away and people will see little reason to keep wild animals on their land and will turn to other forms of destructive land use such as slash and burn agriculture or herding excessive numbers cattle, goats and sheep. The result would see a rapid decline in wildlife numbers.”

Sadly, the animal rights groups continue to tell sensational lies, in order to restrict and ban any form of community benefits from wildlife, including hunting.

In its 7 December 2020 editorial, the seemingly animal rights influenced British newspaper, The Times told what African and international observers view as disgraceful, untruthful and arrogantly neo-colonial racist lies; that the Africans are being forced into hunting by the Safari Club International and Dallas Safari Club.  A pro-hunting British citizen who spoke on conditions of anonymity said that The Times “can’t claim that it was merely reporting” as this was an editorial piece, representing its official anti-hunting position.

“We are very far from being influenced by the West to hunt our wildlife,” said, Mr Ovehi Kasikaona, the Chairman of Namibia’s Anabebi Conservancy; where wildlife revenue was used to build a day-care centre and is creating jobs and; will soon bring solar power to every household. “The animal rights groups must come on the ground and get a clear picture of the benefits of hunting in Africa. They should stop misleading the world by giving a wrong picture of hunting. We will continue to hunt our animals in a very sustainable manner.”

Elsewhere, the President of the Professional Hunters Association of South Africa(PHASA), Mr Peiter Potgieter condemned and dismissed as “utter nonsense,” The Times’ lies that Africa was being forced into hunting against its will and that hunting brings no conservation and development benefits.

“Nobody is forced to do anything and hunting has been part of Africa’s culture long before the white man set foot in Africa and before there were any hunting organizations, local or international,” said Mr Potgieter. “We just found a way to better manage wildlife through our sustainable use model which gives wildlife a greater value and an incentive for local people and communities to conserve and protect the game[wildlife], instead of just seeing it as vermin.”

Meanwhile, the former Director-General for the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and also former CEO of the Kavango-Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA)  with the world’s biggest elephant population, Dr Morris Mtswambiwa said that “poaching is a product of the current unfairness” where those who suffer the costs of co-existing with wildlife are denied the right to meaningfully benefit from it.

“This is a blatant violation of other people’s human rights,” said Dr Mtsambiwa.

The President of Zimbabwe Safari Operators Association, Dr Emmanuel Fundira said that the overtures raised in The Times article “only serve external interests and should be ignored” with the contempt they deserve.

“Africa will continue to partner with external bodies as long as they are fully aligned to serve local interests,” said Dr Fundira.

Africa’s known first black woman safari hunting business operator and an inspirational fighter for community hunting culture and rights, South Africa-based Ms Esther Netshivhongweni and Advisor for the Makuya Traditional Council that occupies the most  natural resource-rich part of  Kruger National Park said that no one can divorce Africans from hunting.

“Hunting has been and still is, Africans’ bartering product to get access to money, to acquire wealth and pride,” said Ms Netshivhongweni. “These international and self-appointed organisations that claim to speak on behalf  African communities, while in the process making money from recolonizing Africans through canvassing for the ban of sustainable use of wildlife in Africa, must be banned from talking on behalf Africans.”

Botswana’s Ngamiland Council of NGOs Executive Director, Mr Siyoka Simasiku said that hunting “is not a new practice” in Africa.

“Our chiefs dress in leopard skins when rising to the throne as a right of honour,” he said. “Pre-colonial African communities had indigenous knowledge, so do current African communities. That knowledge gives guidance on the correct seasons to hunt. These practices helped increase the African wildlife you see today.”

A representative of one of Zimbabwe’s richest hunting communities, Masoka; with a hunting revenue built road and a bridge that links them to the rest of the world, as well as a school that produced medical doctors, engineers, teachers and accountants etc., Mr Ishmael Chaukura said that it’s a pack of lies and absolute propaganda maliciously aimed at banning trophy hunting imports from Africa to Western countries such as the United Kingdom, to say hunting destroys wildlife as The Times did in its editorial this month.

Despite these life-changing benefits brought by hunting, The Times and Western animal rights groups continue to shamelessly lie that safari hunting companies only give 3% of the annual hunting revenue to African rural communities. The 3% benefits from hunting is a misrepresentation of Zimbabwe-based Vernon Booth’s recent research in which he referred to  a voluntary donation of 3% from hunters to rural communities. Therefore,  the 3% is not part of the officially negotiated payments to communities by hunters and safari hunting companies that range from 50% upwards, under contractual agreements that SADC hunting communities sign with hunting companies.

Answering a media question at the November 2019, Victoria Falls  African Wildlife Consultative Conference, Mr Booth confirmed that the animal rights groups continue to quote him out of context as 3% benefits was like a bonus donation and not part of the officially negotiated payments to SADC hunting communities that have much higher percentages than 3%.

To avoid further confusion and lies about hunting benefits, SADC communities have long invited Western Animal rights groups to come and see for themselves the life-changing as well as mind-set-changing hunting benefits.

However, local and international observers say the animal rights groups will never accept the invitation to see the evidence of hunting benefits, because it would end the lies that support their selfish fundraising industry, using African wildlife as their pawn.

The mindset and life-changing benefits from wildlife include the transformation of former wildlife poachers to absolute conservationists. Also, the socio-economic benefits from hunting have given hope for a better future to communities that were once hopeless. Wildlife also continues to benefit from community protection from poachers and wild habitat conservation. The hunting communities are increasingly becoming empowered in wildlife management as evidenced by their involvement  in negotiating the hunting fees and setting the annual hunting quotas.

“For example under the Zimbabwe CAMPFIRE Programme, communities set their own hunting quotas annually, without any external influence,” said Mr Chaukura. “The  representatives from the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority and the rural district councils play the role of the technical advisers. and the communities are the custodians and beneficiaries from trophy hunting.”

Hunting is an effective form of wildlife management that involves the harvesting of old wildlife that would likely soon die of natural causes and that would also be replaced by younger species without causing population decline.

According to the World Wide Fund For Nature (WWF) 1997 Quota Setting Manual, the main purpose of a quota is to identify the number of animals that can be killed without reducing the population.

Trophy hunting is often incorrectly confused with poaching, or with the organised international illegal wildlife trade (IWT) that is currently devastating many species including the African elephant and African rhinos. However, trophy hunting typically takes place as a legal, regulated activity under programmes implemented by government wildlife agencies, protected area managers, indigenous and local community bodies, private landowners, or conservation/ development organisations. In several cases, revenue from hunting is used to fund law enforcement or provide community benefits that counter incentives to engage in IWT.

Meanwhile, African observers say that Africans love their wildlife more than animal rights groups as can be seen in their wildlife-respecting/valuing surnames and totems, given since the creation of humankind. Africans’ surnames and totems range from elephant, lion, hyena, monkey, baboon, snake,  jackal, hippo, crocodile, buffalo and warthog, etc. In contrast, Western people’s surnames are far less associated with wildlife compared to those of Africans.

Sadly, the observers say that the animal rights groups will also continue to lie that Africans don’t love wildlife and hunting and therefore all forms of wildlife use should be banned. They profit from such lies because they help them raise millions of dollars to support their high salaries and lifestyles, with hardly any funds being used to conserve African wildlife. To them, this seems to be an excellent money-making opportunity and it’s not about African wildlife conservation.

This is seemingly a backdoor theft in which African wildlife is used as their pawn, says a recently published book, Western Celebration of African Poverty – Animal Rights Versus Human Rights. The book exposes the dark secrets and harmful activities of animal rights politics in Africa. It argues that it’s a violation of human rights to talk about animal rights without talking about human rights. It says Africa urgently needs a Nelson Mandela of wild trade to emerge from the 21st century so that the continent can claim its sovereign rights to benefit from wildlife sustainably, without external interference. The book concludes that the rights of African race (black and white) will remain violated as long as they continue to be denied the rights to fully, fairly and sustainably benefit from trophy hunting as well as all forms of wild trade that benefit conservation and development on the continent.

The Vice Chairman of Botswana’s Chobe Enclave Conservation Trust, Mr Nchungu Nchungu said that any attempt to ban hunting would be a very big mistake because it creates jobs and socio-economic development opportunities as well as incentivizes the need to conserve wildlife and its habitat.

“Hunting brings the much-needed foreign currency into Africa, including Botswana,” said Mr Nchungu. “So it’s part of the survival for the African communities. If they [West] ban hunting it means the African economy will go down.”

It is against this background that the SADC Community Leaders Network issued a protest letter against The Times this month, correcting the harmful lies; aimed at motivating the ban on African hunting trophy imports into Western countries, including the United Kingdom that is considering to impose such a ban.

The SADC Community Leaders Network  protest statement against  The Times’ harmful anti-hunting lies reads in part, “You [The Times] say trophy hunting fuels “a precipitous decline in population levels of endangered species.

“We say show us the evidence for this offensive, sweeping, and baseless claim which contradicts our information and knowledge as the owners and managers of wildlife.”

Humanitarian Disaster Looming In Gweru As Taps Run Dry Due To Power Outage

By A Correspondent- Gweru has been without running water for five days thereby raising fears of a humanitarian disaster.

Taps ran dry across the whole city on Saturday due to a power outage at the city’s water supply source – Gwenhoro Dam which is situated 46km away from Gweru.

Gweru mayor, Councilor Josiah Makombe said there was no electricity at Gwenhoro Dam following the power outage on Saturday morning. He said:

There are some ZESA poles which collapsed along the power line to Gwenhoro Dam on Saturday. ZESA has been working on them.

Because of the power outage, we haven’t been pumping water and that resulted in the taps running dry.

ZESA is working flat out to address the fault line and we hope soon we will have water back.

People with boreholes on their properties especially in low-density suburbs such as Athlone, Lundi Park and Kopje have been selling the commodity for US$4 per 20litre bucket.

In high-density areas such as Mkoba 15, 18 and 21, those with wells which are mostly unprotected have also been selling water for at least US$2 per 20litre bucket.

Bullying Lands Three High School Pupils Jail Sentences

NATIONAL NEWS

GUTU – Three pupils from Mutero High School in Gutu have been given three months wholly suspended jail sentences for bullying.

The three, Stewart Mazuru (20), Tapiwa Gijima (18) and a minor (17) appeared before Gutu magistrate Mandlenkosi Ndlovu last Friday.

The State said that the three accused another student of stealing a mobile phone.

After accusing the minor, the bullies took the complainant to a dam where they assaulted him for three hours while at the same time pushing him into the water.

They only stopped bullying the minor after the lunch bell rang.
The incident occurred on December 12, 2020.

The State led by Samuel Magobeya said that the accused asked the complainant to accompany them to the school dam a slight distance away from the school which complainant agreed to. Complainant however, attempted to run away after noticing that there was no one at the dam.

The accused then chased him and took turns to assault him accusing him of stealing Mazuru’s mobile phone. The court heard that the accused would push him into the dam after assaulting him.

“The three accused took turns assaulting the complainant whom they accused of stealing a mobile phone belonging to Mazuru. They pushed him into the dam after every assault and only let him free after the lunch hour siren rang,” said Magobeya

Demo Over Khupe’s “Voters Roll”

By A Correspondent- Supporters of MDC-T interim secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora on Wednesday staged a demonstration at the party headquarters in an attempt to discredit the voters roll favoured by the party interim leader Thokozani Khupe.

The protestors claimed that Khupe’s preferred voters’ roll, which is based on the 2014 MDC-T structures, which was adopted by the party, belongs to the rival MDC Alliance.

Mwonzora and Khupe have clashed previously over the voters’ roll to be used this Sunday at the party’s Supreme Court-ordered extraordinary congress.

A party insider, who refused to be named, told NewsDay yesterday that Mwonzora’s backers staged a mini demonstration. He said:

They mobilised and came to Richard Morgan Tsvangirai House, where a meeting of principals that are contesting the presidency was scheduled to begin.

They were baying for Komichi’s blood, accusing him of trying to rig the party elections by using MDC Alliance 2019 structures which the party used for its botched Gweru congress.

The principals had to abort the meeting and opted to go and proceed with the meeting at Mudzuri’s House where the previous national council meeting was held last week.

Mwonzora, Khupe, acting chairperson Morgen Komichi and his deputy Elias Mudzuri are the four contenders to replace founding president Morgan Tsvangirai who died in 2018.

Beitbridge Covid-19 Super Spreader Congestion Worries SA Govt

JOHANNESBURG – Parliament’s portfolio committee on Home Affairs has called for urgent intervention at the Beitbridge border post.

There have been concerns raised over the large number of travellers at the border into Zimbabwe.

This comes as South Africa battles to curb the spread of COVID-19 amid a second wave.

The congestion at the Beitbridge border post during the festive season is nothing new.

But this is no normal year-end.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, travellers have to produce a negative test not older than 72 hours before being allowed to cross the border.

But enforcing this is likely to be difficult as the queues at the border post see many camping out there before crossing into Zimbabwe.

There are concerns that the travellers passing through Beitbridge – some of whom started their journey in the Western Cape – may have their certificates expire before they cross the border.

Chairperson of the parliamentary committee, Bongani Bongo, said that while they understood the need to travel past borders for trade, strategies should have been put in place to mitigate this.

Manhunt For Armed Robber Released On Bail

By A Correspondent- Police have launched a manhunt for suspected armed robber Douglas Mutenda, who was released on bail after prosecutor Mr Douglas Chesa consented to bail on December 8.

Mutenda (31) is facing several counts of armed robbery and was released on $5 000 bail when the State consented on the basis that some of his co-accused were out on bail. But he failed to turn up last Friday for routine remand and Harare magistrate Mrs Judith Taruvinga issued a warrant for his arrest.

Part of his bail conditions were that he was supposed to reside at house number 24 Sebakwe Road, Glen Norah B, in Harare and that he should report twice a week on Mondays and Fridays at Glen Norah Police Station between 6am and 6pm.

Mutenda, who has since failed to report at the police station, was also ordered not to interfere with State witnesses or evidence until the matter was finalised.

Sources close to the investigation yesterday said police over the weekend visited the home address which he gave, but could not locate him.

Mutenda had also claimed that he was married and had three children that he was staying with at the given address. Investigations revealed that he provided fake addresses which are 165 Glen Norah B and 265 Glen Norah B, all in Harare.

A team of detectives from Harare Central Police Station has now questioned several people related or linked to Mutenda. Mutenda was supposed to stand trial for armed robbery charges on February 17 next year with co-accused Prince Makodza, Carrington Marasha, Liberty Mupanhanga, Godfrey Mupamhanga, Spicer Takawira and Musafare Mupanhanga.

On January 21 next year, Mutenda was supposed to be tried at Harare Magistrates’ Court on other armed robbery charges with Eddison Mashamhanda, Spicer Takawira, Prince Makodza, Musafare Mupanhanga, Nevanji Madanhire, Christopher Mashamhanda and Dudzai Chidangwara.

Mutenda was also expected to appear in court on December 30 for routine remand on similar charges with Musa Taj Abdul, Musafare Mupamhanga, Godfrey Mupanhanga, Spicer Takawira, Carrington Marasha, Benjamin Chitunhu and Conwell Kasambarare. He was initially denied bail when he applied at the High Court on October 20 this year.

The State, led by Mr Chesa opposed the application, arguing that they had a very strong case against him.

Mr Chesa also told the court that Mutenda had led to recoveries of some of the stolen items. There was also closed circuit television (CCTV) footage showing Mutenda at a crime scene, Mashwede Towers in Glen View, where US$100 000 was stolen earlier this year. His alleged accomplices also implicated him and there were phone calls linking him to the offence, all of which left the prosecution with a very strong case against him.

High Court Judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi dismissed Mutenda’s bail application on grounds that he was likely to abscond and that he was facing a serious offence.

Barely a month after his bail application was dismissed at the High Court, Mutenda engaged a different lawyer and approached the same court, and went before a different judge. New lawyer Mrs Concilia Maheya made a fresh bail application citing changed circumstances on December 8.

In that application, Mutenda argued that his co-accused, Musafare Mupanhanga, Spicer Takawira, Benjamin Chitunhu and Conwell Kasambarare, had been granted bail. He also argued that he had no pending cases as the State had alleged.

Mr Chesa responded to the fresh bail application on the same day and consented to Mutenda’s release.

“The present application is based on changed circumstances, which the respondent (State) is of the view that they tilt the scales in favour of the applicant,” he said.

UPCI Turns To The High Court As Pastor Refuses To Vacate Church House

By A Correspondent- United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI) has approached the High Court seeking an eviction order against its excommunicated pastor who is allegedly refusing to vacate the church house.

Rev Antony Unganayi Nyandoro is a former pastor of UPCI who has since been excommunicated from the church. His ministerial licence was also annulled. He was accused of leading a group of church members who sought to unconstitutionally replace the church’s national board and executive board.

Rev Nyandoro was also accused by his rivals of gross mismanagement of church funds and usurping the functions of the executive board.

The church said despite causing unlawful and disorderly behaviour, Rev Nyandoro and his sympathisers refused to attend a disciplinary hearing, which subsequently led to their ex-communication from church and ministerial duties.

Rev Nyandoro, together with three others – Reverends Samuel Mugwiji, Edward Fish Gwebu and Pride Nhokwara, belonging to his camp, were in 2018 interdicted from using the church’s name and using church premises in New Lobengula suburb and Eastlea in Harare by Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Martin Makonese.

They were ordered not to attend and interrupt church meetings following an application by UPCI. They were also barred from staging demonstrations against the church’s leaders and members.

Rev Nyandoro is part of the leadership of the breakaway group which caused violent skirmishes and disrupted the church’s Easter Conference in Kwekwe in April 2018 resulting in the intervention of anti-riot police and the Zimbabwe National Army.

During the conference, ZRP and ZNA provided security to quell the threat of violence.

The church, the world’s largest Oneness Pentecostal denomination headquartered in Weldon Spring, Missouri, United States, is mired in leadership disputes that have resulted in nine court cases at the High Court in Bulawayo and Harare. UPCI was formed in 1945 by a merger of the former Pentecostal Church, Inc. and the Pentecostal Assemblies of Jesus Christ.

UPCI, through its lawyers Liberty Mcijo and Associates, filed summons at the Bulawayo High Court citing Rev Nyandoro as a defendant.

The church wants an eviction order against Rev Nyandoro is pursuant to Justice Makonese’s ruling under case number HC1675/17 in which the defendant was part of the individuals that were interdicted from using church buildings in Bulawayo and Harare.

“The defendant is a former pastor who has since been excommunicated from the church and had his ministerial licence cancelled. He, however, continues to live on church premises despite the fact that he is no longer part of the church,” said the lawyers.

The church wants an order directing the defendant to vacate the church premises including all those claiming occupation through him.

“Due to the fact that the defendant is no longer a member of the church and was only using the premises by virtue of his membership, he is liable to eviction. Wherefore, the plaintiff claim against the defendant is for his immediate ejectment on the grounds that he was excommunicated from the church,” said the lawyers.

The church said Rev Nyandoro was given a notice to vacate the church premises, but remained defiant.

The church said in the event that the defendant refused to comply within 48 hours of the granting of the order, the Sheriff of the High Court should be directed to remove him.

Rev Nyandoro is yet to respond to the application.

Bogus Police, Army Officers Nabbed

By A Correspondent- Three suspected armed robbers, who were allegedly offering lifts to hitch-hikers along Simon Muzenda Street (formerly Fourth Street) before robbing them of cash and goods, have been arrested.

The trio is said to have been masquerading as police and army officers and using a black Honda Fit to pick up passengers before diverting to rob the unsuspecting passengers.

They were arrested by a team of officers from Rhodesville Police Station and one of the suspects was wearing police uniform The suspects were yesterday still assisting police with investigations and are expected to appear in court soon.

It is alleged that the suspects would commit the robberies in Hillside near Mukuvisi Woodlands where they would dump their victims. Their luck ran out when they were waylaid by police on Tuesday evening.

Police have been warning members of the public against boarding private vehicles as they can fall prey to robbers. Early this month, two suspected armed robbers, believed to be part of a Harare gang that had been offering lifts to people before robbing them of their cash and valuables were arrested.

Blessing Kamushanga (26) and Oscar Mhozha (26) were allegedly targeting women around the Southerton area and were also using a Honda Fit. They would mainly rob their victims of handbags, cash and other valuables.

Police said most robbers were using unregistered private vehicles and were mostly using Toyota Raum, Spacio, Fun Cargo, Ipsum and Honda Fit vehicles.

Media Fraternity Mourns Veteran Journalist Foster Dongozi

Following the sad passing on of veteran journalist and Secretary General of the Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) after a short illness, the media fraternity has plunged into mourning.

The Media Alliance of Zimbabwe (MAZ) described the late Dongozi as very supportive of journalists and pushed media industry issues to media owners and government.

He was quite openly supportive of journalists that ventured into leadership positions either in the industry as media owners or in governance in either Parliament or Cabinet and in other sectors so as to have media issues being discussed at high levels.

“Dongozi leaves a rich legacy around empowerment and providing incentives for journalists. He was among the brains that transformed the National Journalistic and Media Awards (Njama) to greater heights and for the occasion to be an annual key event on the media calendar,” MAZ said in a statement.

Young Journalists Association (YOJA) said Dongozi supported of young media professionals having their own union to push their issues.

“Foster was one of the many senior journalists who supported the idea of a union mainly for young media practitioners on our formation,” said YOJA.

Suspected Border Jumper’s Body Found Decomposed

By A Correspondent- Police here have recovered the body of a suspected border jumper who drowned in the Limpopo River while illegally crossing between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The body was found in an advanced state of decomposition.

Currently, the Limpopo River, now six metres deep, and many streams are in flood with heavy rains continuing in most parts of Beitbridge district and northern South Africa.

The local Civil Protection Unit has since issued out early warnings to communities around Shashe, Umzingwane and Limpopo Rivers to take precautionary measures.

Officer commanding Beitbridge District, Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo said police were yet to get more reports on drownings and that most information was filtering through the grapevine and these were being investigated.

“We have been hearing rumours, but it is very difficult to establish the facts without anyone reporting on the cases or location,” he said. “However, so far we have one case of drowning that occurred at an illegal crossing point near Panda Mine.

“We have retrieved the body of a man who was spotted trapped between rocks by a villager who was looking for his donkeys along the Limpopo River on December 17.”

Chief Supt Nyongo said the naked corpse had been taken to Beitbridge District Hospital for a post-mortem. He said the remains were found trapped some 20 metres from the Limpopo River.

“The body of the unidentified man was retrieved at the advanced state of decomposition and indications are that he could have drowned while crossing the flooded Limpopo River,” said the senior police officer.

Cases of drowning have become common in Beitbridge during the rainy season. In January this year, two mourners from Mtetengwe area drowned while taking a bath in the flooded Umzingwane River.

Late last year, four fishermen drowned in the flooded Zhovhe Dam when a boat they were using capsized while they were casting fishing nets. The dam is located 63km west of Beitbridge along Umzingwane River.

Cyclone Chalane To Hit Zimbabwe

By A Correspondent- Cyclone Chalane may hit Manicaland Province, especially Chimanimani District, next Thursday with President Mnangagwa putting the country on alert and the Department of Civil Protection (DCP) meeting yesterday to ensure all measures were in place should the cyclone strike.

Few Indian Ocean cyclones get as far as Zimbabwe, but Chalane is on a course for Beira, so Zimbabwean officials are getting ready. If the cyclone hits Chimanimani, this will be the second time the area would have been affected by a cyclone in 21 months, after Cyclone Idai left a trail of death, destruction and displacement of people in March last year.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Mr Jason Nicholls tweeted yesterday that the tropical cyclone may strike north-east Madagascar on Saturday or Sunday and then could move towards Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

In his address in Chivi yesterday while commissioning the Chombwe Piped Water Scheme, the President warned that the cyclone could move into Zimbabwe and asked chiefs and other traditional leaders to warn communities.

DCP director Mr Nathan Nkomo told reporters yesterday that  there had been an Emergency Services sub-committee meeting to plan for any cyclone.

“We are prepared, remember before we develop a contingency plan, it requires funding and this funding was approved by Cabinet in November,” said Mr Nkomo.

“But as for tropical Cyclone Chalane, we met today as the Emergency Services Sub-Committee of the National Civil Protection Committee.

“The Meteorological Services Department has indicated that it is monitoring developments in the eastern parts of Mozambique hourly. And from 31 December to the 1 January, they will continue to monitor whether the cyclone will affect Zimbabwe or not.”

Mr Nkomo said the social media had helped spread the message about the potential cyclone in the provinces, although their structures are on the ground to raise awareness, “without causing pandemonium”.

Representatives from ministries such Public, Service and Social Welfare and Home Affairs and Cultural Heritage were part of yesterday’s meeting, as they play roles such as food and shelter provision, and rescuing marooned people.

Zimbabwe National Water Authority officials also attended as Zinwa will be responsible for monitoring river levels.

Mr Nkomo said they agreed to come up with “a priority plan”, adding that there was need for the identification of institutions that would be used to house any people displaced by the cyclone or needing emergency shelter.

“The institutions should be within reach and technically they should be boarding schools given their infrastructure,” he said.

Traditional leaders have been engaged to raise awareness in their areas, prepare people for evacuation should the need arise while those taking medication, for instance, should have their tablets at hand.

In terms of transport, the DCP will discuss the logistics with Zupco in mind to ensure the movement of people “is done with dignity”, but should the situation deteriorate, any mode of transport that can be obtained will be used.

In a telephone interview, Chimanimani East legislator, Joshua Sacco said awareness campaigns had started while the Chimanimani District Civil Protection Unit had an emergency meeting yesterday to chart the way forward. He is raising awareness about the potential cyclone on his Facebook page, but said he spoke with the Met Department. They were unaware at this stage of the path the cyclone will take until it gets to Beira, Mozambique around December 29 or 30.

Added Sacco:

“Anyway, we have started awareness campaigns and this afternoon (yesterday) the Chimanimani District Civil Protection Unit met to discuss modalities on preparedness and I think central Government may also come in to assist.

“But it is only after the cyclone hits Mozambique that we will start considering evacuations; at this stage we have not started evacuations because the cyclone may change path and go south or north.

Ngarivhume Predicts ED Victory In 2023

By A Correspondent- Opposition politician Jacob Ngarivhume sees a bleak future for opposition politics in Zimbabwe, and has resigned to the fact that the ruling Zanu-PF will win again in the 2023 elections.

Ngarivhume, who fronts the Transform Zimbabwe movement, was part of the MDC Alliance in the 2018 harmonized elections, and pulled out of the coalition last year but remained vibrant in the opposition trenches.

Still smarting from his arrest in July this year over the foiled #July31 protests, Ngarivhume says lack of unity is the biggest undoing for the opposition in Zimbabwe, and other opposition leaders have agreed with him.

“I think more disappointing than fighting Zanu-PF is the lack of unity amongst the opposition,” Ngarivhume wrote on social media, adding that now was the time to act and to “tell it like it is”.

With 2020 already in the rear-view mirror and just over two years to the next plebiscite, Ngarivhume says infighting among the country’s opposition movements has handed Zanu-PF an undeserved breath of fresh air.

Daniel Shumba, who leads the much smaller and virtually unknown United Democratic Alliance (UDA), agreed with Ngarivhume.

“We need to open discussions on pertinent issues of constitutionalism, rule of law, state capture, reforms, and governance. None should entitle themselves or behave as if they are the anointed opposition,” Shumba, also a losing presidential candidate in the 2018 elections, said in apparent reference to the Nelson Chamisa-led MDC Alliance.

“We may narrow down to two or three opposition parties because of ideologies. We are aware of our enemy’s modus operandi. More than infiltration they murder, jail, disenfranchise, expropriate, torture, and use the whole state machinery as their proxy. Nonetheless, we must counter, adapt, and employ smart means. We must ostracize them from echelons of power.”

But President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson, George Charamba, laughed off the sentiment by both Ngarivhume and Shumba, saying the opposition was its own worst enemy.

“You want them to unite over such quisling cause? They are united in rejecting it!” Charamba told off Ngarivhume.

Dr. Brian Sedze, a leading business executive and former organizers of State galas, said the main error lied in the belief among opposition politicians that their main fight was to get rid of Zanu-PF.

“I do not think the idea is to fight Zanu-PF but to fight for a better Zimbabwe. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to differentiate the one being fought and the fighter in terms of character or DNA. Ideology, policy and strategy are more important than #ZanuMustGo hashtags,” said Dr Sedze.

Recently, former Zanu-PF chief propagandist Professor Jonathan Moyo also said the main opposition in particular the MDC Alliance was focusing on Chamisa’s soundbites which make good news headlines but mean nothing to the average voter.  Moyo, who is in exile since the fall of the Robert Mugabe regime over three years ago, cited the #MugabeMustGo mantra of the MDC under Morgan Tsvangirai as another false mirage that kept the opposition busy all for nothing in the end.

Moyo reckoned that when Mugabe indeed left in November 2017 under pressure from his former colleagues, the army and even opposition leaders, nothing has changed in terms of the fortunes of the opposition supporters, showing the bigger problem was not an individual.

Ngarivhume admits that 2023 is a tall order for the opposition, especially considering that Finance Minister Mthuli Ncube appeared to have tamed the runaway inflation which had presented hope of an economic implosion MDC Alliance supporters.

“I don’t think we are going to make progress in 2023 until we deal with the elephant in the room,” said Ngarivhume, referring to disunity and ego in opposition structures.

Political analyst Mufaro Chambati told the Zimbabwe Voice that unless the camp led by Nelson Chamisa realized they were being taken down a garden path, the opposition will be left even more bruised after the 2023 elections.

“There are plenty signs of poor leadership, dictatorship, student politics and politics of the stomach in the main MDC Alliance. (Nelson) Chamisa and his followers think populism is a sign of quality leadership, but in truth he lacks strategic thinking, conflict resolution and basic management skills. Does MDC Alliance need a new leader ahead of the 2023 elections? I bet so!”

South Africa Set To Urgently Impose Tough Lockdown As The New Covid-19 Variant Is Ravaging The Country

Zweli Mkhize

A tougher lockdown is imminent in South Africa.

More than 14 000 new COVID-19 infections were recorded in South Africa on Wednesday 23 December, matching the peak seen during the first wave.

Things are set to get worse for Mzansi, as a new strain of the virus rips through the country – and, to the amazement of many – parts of the UK are also affected by this variant.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize has confirmed that the current lockdown laws in South Africa will now ‘have to be reviewed’, revealing that ‘further measures’ are set to be considered soon. He then set down three golden rules for SA citizens:

  • Avoid large gatherings and congested environments.
  • Ensure adequate ventilation is available in places where people gather.
  • Vigilantly adhere to non-pharmaceutical interventions, such as wearing masks, social distancing, and sanitising.

Sadly, the death toll continues to rise at an alarming rate. A total of 411 people succumbed to COVID-19 on Wednesday – with 171 of those dying in the Western Cape. There were 101 fatalities in the Eastern Cape, and 90 in KZN.

These glum figures have forced Zweli Mkhize into a corner. The minister is now confident that the second wave will be much more devastating than the first, as South Africa skyrockets towards its one-millionth coronavirus case. This all means that tougher lockdown restrictions will return – and it is now a question of ‘when, not if…’

“Today we report that 14 046 COVID-19 cases have been identified since the last report at a positivity rate of 26%. Therefore, the cumulative total of COVID-19 cases today is 954 258. This indicates that the virus continues to spread exponentially – the rate of spread is much faster than the first wave. We’ll surpass the first wave peak in the coming days.”

“We must warn South Africans that we will need to review the current restrictions and consider further measures to ensure that we curb this alarming rate of spread. Therefore, it will be important for us to evaluate the situation in these provinces, identify hotspots in these areas (and in other provinces) before making recommendations based on these findings.”

“We can’t stress enough the need for citizens to take every precaution necessary as we look for a reprieve from a tough year. Unfortunately, COVID-19 is unrelenting and we therefore cannot afford to be complacent at this stage. We urge all South Africans to adhere to the regulations and recommendations pertaining to the National State of Disaster.”

Advantage FC Platinum

FC Platinum 1 – 0 Simba SC

ATTACKING midfielder Perfect Chikwende turned on the show with a beautiful strike that gave FC Platinum a narrow win over Tanzania’s Simba S.C. in the first leg of the Caf Champions League first round tie at the National Sports Stadium yesterday.

The Zimbabweans, who were coming from a difficult background of inactivity this year, turned up with a composed game-plan which helped them contain the 2018-19 quarter-finalists after getting the early goal.

Chikwende, who scored the second goal when the Zimbabwean champions disposed of Mozambican outfit Costa do Sol in the preliminary round, continued with his fine form when he put the platinum miners ahead after 17 minutes.

The diminutive midfielder yesterday burst into a run on the right flank, beating his markers in the wake before unleashing a powerful right-footer that gave the visitors’ goalkeeper Aishi Manula no chance at all as it went in through the bottom corner of the goal.

The win gives FC Platinum the advantage ahead of the return leg set for January 6 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Winners after the two-legged encounter will proceed to the group stage.

Norman Mapeza’s game-plan appears to have worked well for the platinum miners who did well not to concede at home despite the threat posed by the visitors.

Simba looked dangerous with their attacks but they could not break clear at goal. They even missed two great opportunities towards the end of the game, which could have complicated the day for the hosts.

FC Platinum goalkeeper and skipper Petros Mhari came up with some important saves in the match and also did a great job organising his defence.

The platinum miners to their credit fought for every ball and were deserved winners despite not having played competitive football for nearly a year, before engaging in the preliminary round against Costa do Sol and emerging 4-1 aggregate victors.

Mapeza was forced to rethink his starting line-up following the injury to Silas Songani who missed the action yesterday. Another key midfielder Ralph Kawondera, who was not 100 percent fit, was also forced to start from the bench.

Hardworking FC Platinum midfielder Brian Banda had his shot tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Manula soon after the restart but the hosts failed to make good use of the resultant corner.

Chikwende had a brilliant opportunity to register a brace when he slipped past his markers to come face-to-face with the keeper but Manula this time used his frame to block the shot.

Fitness issues were always manifesting in the FC Platinum side and Mapeza had no choice but to replace striker Stanley Ngala at the hour mark after the forward came worse off in a tussle with a Simba player.

But Simba showed that they are not a small side. The 21-time Tanzanian champions also missed the services of their danger man John Bocco who failed to recover on time for the match and was replaced by Ugandan Middie Kagere.

Simba evaded the off-side trap after 68 minutes but Mhari managed to have his hand on a rising shot by substitute Larry Bwalya who had an exchange with Chris Mugalu.

The Tanzanians had the ball in the back of the nets with exactly 15 minutes remaining but the far side assistant referee had his flag up for off-side after Mugalu had strayed in the area unattended.

Simba had another glorious opportunity deep in injury-time when two of their players found themselves unmarked in the box but substitute Mugalu could not direct his header home.

Byo’s Road Networks Collapse

By A Correspondent- Bulawayo’s road network has collapsed following heavy rains that are being experienced in the city and elsewhere across the country and council needs approximately US$500 million to fix them.

Earlier this year, the local authority said 70 percent of its 2 389km road network needed urgent attention. Motorists in the city have bemoaned the dilapidated state of the road network which is damaging their vehicles.

They said the potholed roads are also to blame for some of the accidents being experienced across the city.

Most of the city’s major roads have become an eyesore due to potholes but the situation is worse for feeder roads leading to residential areas. While council has tried to renovate major roads, the feeder roads appear to have been neglected for years.

Rains that have been received recently have further damaged even the roads that were deemed to be in good shape.

So bad are the roads that some residents are joking that the potholes are part of the widely adopted Intwasa/Pfumvudza climate proof farming method under implementation to improve the country’s yields.

Memes abound depicting the deep potholes as the holes used for planting in the national programme.

Some motorists have resorted to avoiding some of the bad roads, such as Khami Road near Ingwebu Breweries. Mr Vuyo Phiri from Cowdray Park suburb said:

“The roads are so bad, it’s even worse for us with light vehicles. I lost my car’s shocks because of these roads. After it rains it gets worse because you won’t even know that you are going through a pothole until you hit it as it would be filled with water.

The sad situation is that we are now also recording accidents as a result of potholes. Mr Vuyo Phiri Last week, I saw someone being hit by a car which swerved off the road while the driver tried to avoid going through a pothole. The pedestrian lost his life along Luveve Road just after the flyover.”

Another motorist Ms Millicent Soko said driving has become more difficult especially as drivers have to constantly manoeuvre to avoid the potholes.

“It damages cars, the suspension, tyres and the like. One gets tired driving short distances as they will be constantly changing gears and swerving to avoid the potholes. You have to be always extra alert on the road just to avoid hitting a pothole. The problem is that we are not even seeing the council doing anything to patch some of the potholes. The old ones have become deeper while new ones have emerged,” said Ms Soko.

Miss Gugulethu Mpofu from Hillside suburb said the risk of being involved in an accident increases especially when driving through unfamiliar roads.

“For example, I used Khami Road, as I passed Turnall (Holdings), the road is so bad. I didn’t know it was now like that from the last time I used it. We are now in the festive season and a lot of people have come from diaspora. They might not know how the roads have deteriorated and this could cause accidents. I don’t know who should fix the roads between the Government and the city council but something needs to be urgently done,” said Miss Mpofu.

Another driver Mr Cephas Mutasa from Queens Park suburb said it is not just potholes that need fixing but also the city’s drainage system which is failing to absorb water whenever there is a downpour.

Bulawayo Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube admitted that the city’s road network had collapsed. He said on Sunday he went around the city assessing the state of the roads and what he saw worried him. Mr Dube however said there will be no quick-fix to the city’s road network problem as a lot of money is needed to address the issue.

“We are facing a disaster not just as Bulawayo but all other local authorities. Roads have totally collapsed. The reason being we have not been maintaining roads. We have been building new suburbs, constructing new roads but we have not renovated the old roads. We may need about half a billion in US dollars to fix our roads as Bulawayo. We might need investors to chip in so that we could rehabilitate our road network. We need capital injection so that we rehabilitate our roads,” said Mr Dube.

He said it was unfortunate that investors were not willing to spend their money even after the council comes up with brilliant ideas with most of them demanding sovereign guarantee, which is difficult to obtain.

Mr Dube said Zimbabwe National Road Administration (Zinara) was not disbursing enough money towards road maintenance while residents were also not paying bills. He said Zinara had promised to allocate ZW$81 million towards road maintenance to Bulawayo as part of the last disbursement for the year but last month only ZW$13 million was allocated.

Bulawayo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Judith Ncube said the poor state of the road network is a serious concern that needs all hands on the deck. She said residents can also assist in addressing the poor road network problem by paying their bills.

“I was checking the city council accounting books; residents are not paying their bills. We need residents to pay their bills for the council to effectively deliver on its mandate. We know that there are no jobs and money but we should also play our part. Our roads are in a bad state, it’s even worse for light vehicles. Last week, we were driving along Luveve Road, I observed three light vehicles that hit potholes and broke their ball joints, so we need to take this issue seriously. Sometimes when these parts break, it could result in accidents, so we need to take this issue seriously,” she said.

Zinara spokesperson Mr Tendai Mugabe said the roads agency has come up with a ZW$1,1 billion supplementary budget to be disbursed to road authorities so that they attend to roads during this rainy season.

“We set the road users charges and we collect the money and disburse it to road authorities who have the responsibility of maintaining our road network including Bulawayo City Council. It will not be proper for me to comment on the state of the roads. But what I can say is that as Zinara we have disbursed a supplementary budget of about ZW$1,1 billion to cushion road authorities during this rainy season to maintain our road infrastructure. But I want to make it clear that it’s not our responsibility to maintain that road infrastructure,” said Mr Mugabe.

Health Experts Call For Urgent Closure Of Beitbridge Border Post, ZANU PF Says It’s Unnecessary Cause For Alarm

Dr Solwayo Ngwenya

HEALTH experts have called on the government to urgently close the borders, particularly the busy Beitbridge Border Post after a new COVID-19 variant was detected in neighbouring South Africa.

Already, five countries Germany, Turkey, Israel, Switzerland and Saudi Arabia have suspended flights from South Africa to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 variant.

The virus is termed 501.V2 variant, and health experts have said it carries a heavier viral load.

With thousands of Zimbabweans based in South Africa returning home for the Christmas and New Year holidays, health experts fear the worst for the country, hence they called on the government to close borders.

“It’s too late to close the South African border as there are thousands of people already committed to spending the festive season here in Zimbabwe,” Mpilo chief executive officer Solwayo Ngwenya said in an interview.

“You (Zimbabweans) will have to deal with the ramifications of COVID-19, despite expert warnings and advice. People were warned not to travel, and repeatedly for months they were warned.”

https://twitter.com/Jamwanda2/status/1341950995866255360?s=20

South Africa has recorded 931 000 cases of COVID-19, with almost 25 000 deaths, according to official statistics.

Excess mortality studies suggest a death toll of more than 5 000.

After the first wave peaked in July and August, the daily total for new cases fell dramatically.

However, the number of new infections began to rise steeply at the beginning of December, reaching 11 000 early this week.

Meanwhile, the Bulawayo City Council has banned annual public activities during the festive season citing escalation of COVID-19 infections.

The banned activities include the Jason Moyo Street Mall, Trade Fair funfairs and the Lunar Park, which are places in Bulawayo well known for lighting up the festive season as they attract huge crowds.

“The city would like to advise the public that the portion of Jason Moyo Street, of 8th Avenue between JMN Nkomo Street and Fife Street will not be closed this festive season to accommodate Christmas activities due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Bulawayo town clerk Christopher Dube said in a statement.

“Council will, in future, notify the public of any changes pertaining to the events at the Jason Moyo Street Mall, Trade Fair funfairs and Lunar Park activities in light of the COVID-19 pandemic. Bulawayo City Council would like to apologise for any inconveniences likely to be caused.”

Dube also advised Bulawayo residents to adhere to COVID-19 protocols, which include wearing of masks and exercising social distancing, as well as avoiding public gatherings during the festive season.

The City of Bulawayo is once again recording a high number in daily infections and at least a death everyday.

According to the daily update from the Health and Child Care ministry, as at December 22, Bulawayo had 481 active cases and 90 deaths.

The country has recorded 12 544 cases, 10 159 recoveries and 326 deaths.

More Police Officers Deployed To Enforce No Partying Covid-19 Restriction Directive

State Media

Police Commissioner General Godwin Matanga

POLICE have increased deployment of officers to curb festive season-related road accidents and crimes including robberies, theft and break-ins.

The police have also urged members of the public to adhere to Covid-19 regulations to prevent the spread of the global pandemic.

They also discouraged people from keeping large sums of money in their homes or going around with huge amounts.

Police also expressed concern over drowning cases that have been on the increase since the country started receiving heavy rains in the past few days.

In his festive season message, Police Commissioner General Godwin Matanga said police have activated all necessary structures to curb or minimise holiday-related crimes.

Comm Gen Matanga said members of the public should abide by the country’s laws to avoid arrests and disappointments during the festive season.

“Of particular interest is the issue of road traffic accidents which take centre stage during this period. It is sad to note that most road traffic accidents during the festive season are caused by speeding, drunken driving, misjudgment, overtaking errors, failure to observe traffic rules and regulations and mechanical faults.

In this regard, the police will ensure that deployments are conducted along major highways, residential areas, industrial and central business districts,” said Comm Gen Matanga.

“Police officers will conduct foot and motorised patrols on all major and feeder roads, checking for wanted persons, loitering criminals and those who move around with stolen property.

“Drivers are warned not to drive while drunk or under the influence of alcohol or other substances which may affect their judgment. They must be observant and avoid the use of cellphones while driving.”

He said police will impound all defective vehicles and those without number plates.

The Comm Gen said police will closely work with the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe, Vehicle Inspection Department and Zimbabwe National Road Administration to ensure that only roadworthy vehicles are on the roads.

Comm Gen Matanga urged commuters to avoid boarding unregistered vehicles as some of them are used to commit crimes and they may end up being victims.

He said police are also on alert to curb crimes usually committed during the festive season that include rape, robbery, assault and theft among others.

“As the public make merry and enjoy this holiday, my office is concerned with murder cases which arise out of domestic disputes, beer drinking disputes, those committed by mentally ill patients, those emanating from witchcraft allegations especially among relatives and neighbours and the recent killings of children by parents and guardians for various misdemeanours,” said Comm Gen Matanga.

“Life is sacrosanct and let us find peaceful means of resolving differences, especially during this holiday. Police officers are available to assist families and those in disagreements to negotiate and discuss peaceful methods of tackling differences.”

The Comm Gen said members of the public should adhere to Covid-19 prevention measures including observing the daily 10PM to 6AM curfew.

“When It Started We Never Thought It Was Serious,” Foster Dongozi Leaves Behind Shuttered Hearts

Veteran journalist and long-serving Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) secretary-general Foster Dongozi has died.

Dongozi, who is reported to have been suffering from a heart ailment for a long period, passed on last night at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals.

His death plunged the journalism fraternity into mourning, coming barely two days after that of another veteran journalist Charles Laiton.

Former ZUJ president Matthew Takaona last night said he was shattered by Dongoza’s death.

“I am devastated. Shortly before his death there was an SOS call from his close relative that he was critical. He was rushed to a local hospital where he died after admission.

“He was one of the most tolerant persons whom I have ever worked with.”

Takaona said the media fraternity had lost a great pillar who was sober minded in his approaches.

“Over the years he managed to unite journalists across the political divide, keeping the union away from partisan politics,” he said.

Zimbabwe National Editors Forum secretary-general Isdore Guvamombe, who is also a former ZUJ vice president, described Dongozi as “a journalist with a conviction to drive journalism to greater heights.”

“He was a unionist at heart. He had a conviction to transform journalism through defending its principles and rewarding hard working journalists. We all remember how he recently presided over this year’s National Journalism Merit Awards. Those close to him knew he was sick that time, but he worked day and night to make them a success,’’ said Guvamombe.

Information gathered from a close relative who declined to be named, said Dongoza had gotten seriously ill while visiting the construction site of his new home in Harare.

“When it started we never thought it was serious. We thought he had been affected by the smell of paint. But things got worse and he was rushed to hospital.”

Mnangagwa Commissions Piped Water Scheme For Rural Chivi Community

President Mnangagwa yesterday commissioned the $8 million Chombwe Piped Water Scheme in Chivi.

The project was financed through Government’s devolution funds.

President Mnangagwa said the devolution programme would transform the lives of the rural folk over the next five years through financing the development of piped water schemes that will supply water for domestic consumption, irrigation and livestock.

The Chombwe scheme had been mothballed for nearly 25 years owing to the breakdown of infrastructure to pump, store and convey water.

Nearly 10 000 households in arid Chivi North and Central constituencies will benefit from the scheme through the supply of piped raw water, with an estimated 5 000 hectares expected to be put under irrigation.

Water is pumped from Tokwe River, downstream of Muzhwi Dam and conveyed to homesteads, schools, clinics and business centres covering five wards between Mhandamabwe Business Centre and Chivi Growth Point.

He hailed devolution saying under the Second Republic, communities would choose their own priority projects to drive development.

“What we now have is a situation whereby Harare will no longer dictate what is wanted in outlying parts of the country. Under the Second Republic, we now have a new way of doing things where communities decide their own projects that will be funded under devolution and we are very impressed with ground that has been covered in a short space of time with 74 projects having been funded in Masvingo this year alone which was impossible if Harare was dictating the pace like before,” said President Mnangagwa.

“Projects like this (Chombwe scheme) will be replicated in other parts of the country and after the coming of the Second Republic we were told of this mothballed project and decided to fund it under devolution and here we are today.

“So we will definitely undertake similar projects all parts of the country over the next five years.”

“We have started the war against hunger here in Chivi that will spread to all parts of the country within the next five years and we want our people to be able to grow enough food for themselves while also stocking GMB and growing other crops for sale.

“Our thrust is all year round crop production with schemes like these so there will be no excuse for failure,” said President Mnangagwa.

Besides crop production, communal farmers could also diversify into fruit trees while having sufficient water to grow their livestock herds for local consumption and export.

In his address to hundreds of people at Jenya Secondary School in Chivi North, President Mnangagwa highlighted inroads made by devolution funding hailing the programme as a game changer for the country’s economy.

“The future is bright. We can see that the future is bright. What has been a problem is the magnitude of hardships where we are coming from but the future is bright,” he said.

President Mnangagwa said his Governmnet would continue investing in dams, roads and bridges using local resources to drive the economy.

President Mnangagwa handed over agricultural inputs to traditional leaders from Chivi and surrounding areas.

Limpopo River Deaths, Decomposing Body Of A Man Found Trapped In The Flooded River

Own Correspondent

File picture of Zimbabweans contemplating crossing the flooded Limpopo River

Police here have recovered the body of a suspected border jumper who drowned in the Limpopo River while illegally crossing between South Africa and Zimbabwe.

The body was found in an advanced state of decomposition.

Locals in Beitbridge claim that several people have been washed away by the heavily flooded river indicating that more bodies are likely to be found downstream of the river.

Officer commanding Beitbridge District, Chief Superintendent Tichaona Nyongo said police were yet to get official reports on the drownings and that most information was filtering through the grapevine and these were being investigated.

Cyclone Chalane Building Up In The Indian Ocean, Likely To Hit Chimanimani In The Next Week

Paul Nyathi

Weather experts on Monday warned of a tropical storm that is building up in the Indian Ocean and could make landfall in Madagascar at the weekend and proceed towards the Mozambique Channel early next week with a possibility of stretching into Zimbabwe’s Eastern province of Manicaland.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Jason Nicholls said the ongoing heating of the water surface in the southwestern Indian Ocean is expected to result in a tropical storm forming during the course of this week.

“A tropical low located well southwest of Diego Garcia will continue to strengthen as it drifts westward over the next few days,” Nicholls said.

The tropical low is expected to further strengthen as it enters “an area of atmospheric conditions” before reaching Madagascar.

“Warm water and favourable atmospheric conditions are expected to allow this low to strengthen into Tropical Storm Chalane this week,” the weather forecaster said.

He warned that the storm would result in periods of heavy rainfall, gusty winds and rough seas in northern Madagascar and surrounding areas.

“The storm is expected to strike northeast Madagascar on Saturday and may eventually emerge over the Mozambique Channel early next week,” Nicholls said.

Rainfall of this magnitude is expected to result in flooding and increased of mudslides, the expert said.

Meanwhile, government has mobilised Civil Protection Unit (CPU) teams which are on high alert, especially in the eastern parts of the country.

AccuWeather senior meteorologist Nicholls tweeted yesterday that the tropical cyclone may strike north-east Madagascar on Saturday or Sunday and possibly move towards Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

The Horrors Of Parking Your Car In The Harare CBD

Own Correspondent

The City of Harare has announced that parking charges have been reviewed upwards with effect from 2 January 2020. A circular from the City states that motorists will now part with US$0.70 per hour to park their vehicles at designated parking spots around the city.

Motorists have already been battling to pay the current fee of US$0.50 especially for those who work in the CBD and have to drive into the city everyday.

A Harare entrepreneur who runs a shop along Julius Nyerere Street told ZimEye.com that he has had to quit bringing his car to work as he will be forced to pay City Parking US$5 per day for the ten hours he is in the city everyday at the current rate.

“I can’t afford the parking fees as at the end of each month I will be forced to part with about US$120 just for parking for the six days a week in town,” he said.

A lady who also works in the CBD said she is surviving by making use of a private parking space about four blocks away from her office who are levying US$10 per month for parking Monday to Friday.

Motorists have also raised complaints against officials from City Parking who are very quick to clamp vehicles whose parking time has expired without giving the owner a chance to pay for the extended time on return to the car.

“I had my car clamped when the parking time had exceeded by just six minutes and had to pay a lot more to have it unclamped,” said one motorist on social media.

Although the city council and City Parking have been expanding the reach of paid street parking, it is still possible to find free parking within a 15-minute walk of the city centre, especially to the east and west.

In the last two to three decades, most major corporate headquarters have left the city centre for office parks in the northern suburbs and investors and developers have built or expanded huge shopping complexes in the suburbs, again concentrating on the northern suburbs.

This change in business has seen the city centre more and more hosting smaller businesses that bus passengers, especially those stuck in the city centre while they wait for a connecting bus to their final destinations, might use.

Fees in the poshest parts of Johannesburg and Cape Town are more in the line of R50 a day, making even the US$0.50 an hour on the pricey side.

City Parking, the private company set up by the city council to manage street parking, parkades and car parks, unilaterally hiked its charges to US$0.70 an hour, although people could pay in local currency at the informal rate, a staggering $700 an hour and easily the most expensive in the entire Sadc region.

Student Teachers Recalled From Teaching Practice

By A Correspondent- The Higher and Tertiary Education ministry has recalled student teachers, who had already been deployed for teaching practice, to continue face-to-face tutorials at their respective campuses.

The authorities’ decision to recall the student teachers comes on the back of the ministry’s conviction that the students are not adequately prepared for teaching practice.

In a notice to principals of teachers colleges, tertiary education programmes assistant director Christopher Mudzingwa said teaching practice deployment of the January 2021 group has been pushed to May 2021.

“The class of students who started their course in January 2020 should continue with their face-to-face tutorials from January 4 to March 26, 2021 on campus in preparation for the teaching practice deployment in May 2021,” he said.

Mudzingwa directed that the circulated academic calendar for 2021 should be strictly adhered to.

“In this regard, ensure that there is adequate preparation of student teachers towards their teaching practice,” he added.

Authorities have insisted on the adequate preparation of student teachers before deployment for teaching practice despite demonstrations by the Council of Student Teachers (CST) last month.

The student teachers who protested against the decision to force them to repeat in 2021 were arrested, including CST leader Walter Muzamani.

They were arrested at Morgan Zintec Teachers’ College in Harare and appeared at the magistrates court where they were released on bail.

Teacher training institutions, polytechnics and vocational training centres resumed studies in July after lessons were discontinued on March 24 as the government battled to contain the spread of Covid-19.

Most of the learning institutions had been turned into quarantine centres for locals returning from abroad as authorities sought to contain the spread of the virus.-dailynews

Wife Of Late Zim Man Wins Death Certificate Battle

The widow of a late Zimbabwean man, who she claimed had obtained South African citizenship, asked the Gauteng High Court to overturn a decision by the Department of Home Affairs not to issue a death certificate.

Sylvia Melaphi, a mother of three, eventually obtained the death certificate for her husband Robert Melaphi more than a year and a half after his death.

The department was adamant that Robert was not a South African citizen. According to the department, the law precluded it from issuing a death certificate to a non-South African.

While his widow insisted he was a South African citizen, Home Affairs simply disputed this without supplying any facts in this regard to the court.

Acting Judge SDJ Wilson said the department had “perhaps not taken the attitude I would ideally expect from a responsible organ of State in matters of this nature.”

He added that the department should have perhaps responded to the widow’s plight with more reasoned compassion than has been in evidence in this case.

The husband died in April 2019 after a long illness. He left money for his funeral, savings and a life policy to support his wife and children.

His widow wanted to access the benefits, but could not as she was unable to convince officials of the department to issue an unabridged certificate.

The death certificate is one of a series of documents necessary to access the various payments and benefits to which the widow and her children would be entitled. It is also necessary to finally wind up her husband’s estate.

The department refused to issue the death certificate, claiming that the deceased was not a South African citizen at the time of his death and as a result did not qualify for a death certificate.

Melaphi said her husband was born in South Africa to a South African mother and a Zimbabwean father. Home Affairs, on the other hand, offered a bare denial of this to the court.

The judge said the department’s unsubstantiated denial was insufficient to create a dispute of fact. He said in the absence of facts to counter the widow’s claim, he must accept that the deceased acquired South African citizenship by birth.

He said the deceased acquired an ID, driving licence, passport and marriage certificate, which were shown to the court. His ID, with a South African number, was issued in 1995.

The department, out of the blue, questioned his citizenship in 2010. But by the time of his death the investigation into his legal status had not been completed.

His widow said he was so distressed by the investigation that his health deteriorated, he became chronically ill, lost his job and eventually died.

The judge said one would have expected the department to give some answers as to why it had suspected that he was illegally in the country. But none was provided.

The department instead mentioned the “Beitbridge Project” which was implemented over the 2009/10 Christmas and New Year period.

This was to check all travel documents for those who travelled between South Africa and Zimbabwe. The project involved interviewing travellers at the border post in Beitbridge, and deciding whether or not to seize their documents.

The documents of the deceased were subsequently seized, but the department could not say why.

“The gravest cause for concern in the respondents’ (department) answering affidavit is that there is simply no account of on what basis Mr Melaphi’s citizenship was found to be suspect …,” the judge said in ordering that the death certificate be issued.

“Crocodiles Don’t Build Nations”

Tinashe Sambiri|MDC Alliance vice president, Hon Tendai Biti has pointed out that Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa is worse than President Robert Mugabe because the current Zanu PF leader has taken brutality and persecution of opposition activists to “unprecedented levels.”

Hon Biti argued that compared to Mr Mnangagwa, Mugabe was a political saint.

“Jacob Mafume’s continued detention exposes the regime’s ruthless capture of state institutions and its unrelenting malice.

Emmerson is a vindictive character without any boundaries .Sadly the State is now reproducing itself in his own image.Mugabe now appears saintly.

This man is surely turning in his grave .The latest faux pas from the regime is around a National Dress.

An illegitimate group of people unable to command love respect and trust from the citizen can never foist a sense of identity or nationhood. Crocodiles don’t build nations…

The Mnangagwa regime has taken the assault on workers rights to new and unprecedented levels .

The devaluation of wages and payments in ZWL$ represents vicious attack on working people .The physical arrests torture and convictions of workers on dubious spurious charges is a new low for Zim,” argued Hon Biti.

In a statement, ARTUZ condemned the conviction and sentencing of its Gender and Welfare representative for Masvingo Province Sheila Chisirimunhu:

“@edmnangagwa
has taken us back to Rhodesia. Cde Sheila sentenced to 16 months imprisonment for protesting against underpayment.

Sheila to serve 10 months in prison. This is an attempt to silence the exploited working class. We are appealing this and this gvt wont know peace.”

President Chamisa Denounces Persecution Of Opposition Activists

Tinashe Sambiri|MDC Alliance leader, President Nelson Chamisa has pointed out that the concept of unity has been drowned by violence and lawlessness in the country.

Below is President Chamisa’s Unity Day Message :

THE IDEA OF UNITY- MDC Alliance President Nelson Chamisa Unity Day Message
22 December 2020

Fellow Zimbabweans,

The bold font of divisions, destruction, violence and anarchy continues to override the voices of love, unity, peace, reason and development in our country.

This is largely because our nation-building project has not fulfilled the promise of the glorious days of independence.

We need true unity, peace and prayer to heal and build our nation. Peace and unity are the necessary ingredients for development and the enjoyment of fundamental freedoms and rights.

However, it is important to understand the idea of unity. Unity is not about the coming together of bodies, commanded by the powerful in society. It is not an event signified by elite political pacts. Unity is a process by which minds are drawn together organically to achieve a common purpose.

Unity does not mean the absence of difference. Instead, it is a process that acknowledges, recognises and celebrates difference as a natural part of a normal society. Therefore, unity does not necessarily mean uniformity among peoples. Rather it recognises and promotes diversity and the beauty of it.

Indeed, unity does not mean compulsory conformity of the minority to the majority merely because the majority demand compliance. Rather, unity behoves the majority to recognise and respect minorities in whatever form because they matter too.

Politically, unity is a process in which parties of different political and ideological persuasions are allowed to pursue their cause while they come together to face common threats.

Unity does not criminalize diversity and alternative views. It is not tyranny of the centre. This why the devolution process, which is encapsulated in our Constitution, is essential for unity. Unity does not mean sweeping pain and tears of a people under the proverbial carpet. Rather, it is a process that is undergirded by truth-telling, acknowdgement of pain, remorse and reconciliation.

Where there is unity of purpose there is difference but a commitment to development and prosperity. Genuine unity does not produce an impoverished society. It exalts a people to prosperity. On this day, we should be celebrating. But too many of our people are in great pain because of socio-economic burdens that have become unbearable.

Currently, we experience too many divisions, violence, and hatred. This has made Unity Day become trite, vacuous and meaningless without the values and practices of unity that I have outlined. It has become a reminder of the ogre of violence, intolerance and hate speech that continue to engulf our nation.

Violence is intolerable. We note with disdain an increase in abductions and torture against its citizens including young leaders and activists. We have hundreds of MDC leaders in detention or on remand facing trumped-up politically-motivated charges. The consistent and persistent denial of citizens’ rights is a form of violence against political opponents.

The harassment, intimidation, illegal arrest of opposition leaders, activists, and professionals is repugnant to unity and peace. It’s deplorable how professionals have been harassed and persecuted during the course of the year simply because they have dared to exercise their freedoms. Unity does not mean a suppression of fundamental rights and freedoms. It celebrates and protects them.

Unity is not built on force. It is built upon foundations of love, understanding and appreciation of difference and diversity.

In a New Zimbabwe, under our new government, we propose a National Unity, Peace and Prayer Day. We do so in recognition of the fact that unity, peace and prayer are interconnected.

We recognise that unity is not merely a political slogan but rather, it is a reality that we must experience in all spheres, be it in our families, churches, workplaces civic organisations or government.

Nation building is an ongoing project that must produce conditions of unity in diversity. But we cannot build a nation when there is persecution. We call for an end to political persecution. Nation building requires justice to be done for the aggrieved in our communities.

We deserve to be united by our values, aspirations, constitution and human rights. No single organization is bigger than Zimbabwe. We must imagine a better, just and more prosperous Zimbabwe in which our diversity is celebrated, not condemned.

We owe it to ourselves and future generations as God’s people to embrace one another in unity, to pray for the prosperity of our nation. Prayer works with works. We should not wait for divine intervention when we can change our behaviour.

This day, I call upon families and all people of this country to embrace this day as a day we express our unity with one another. A day we find peace. A day we seek the Lord as we prepare for Christmas and the New Year holidays.

This day, I join you all in demanding true unity, peace and prosperity for us all as a people. We in the MDC are ready to play our part in finding a lasting solution to the national issues that bring us together as a nation. We will unite the nation and bring peace in the name of our Lord, without resorting to any forms violence which we abhor.

Peace is simple. Peace begins within. Peace begets peace. Peace breeds prosperity.

In our fractured nation, I wish you all a blessed Unity, Peace and Prayer day and we pray for unity and peace in our country.

Winning Zimbabwe for real change.Change that delivers!

God Bless you
