Sikhala Breaks Silence…

31st July Movement
Spokesperson

12 August 2020

Enquiries are being made about my whereabouts and safety by concerned people of good faith, embassies, friends and relatives.

I want to just advise everyone that God is in Charge. In him I trust.

My present situation is exactly the society that Zimbabwe has become, where citizens live like animals; hunted and abused by the very same people who should be protecting citizens and their rights.

This is the society that Eddison Zvobgo rejected. It is the society that Joshua Nkomo, Alfred Nikita Mangena, Nelson Mandela and it is the unacceptable society rejected by the luminary cohort of Africa’s founding nationalists and revolutionaries.

The 31st July Movement is a Convergence Initiative of Citzens on critical and urgent issues of national concern affecting the lives and livelihoods of ordinary Zimbabweans.

The 31st July Movement has broad based constituencies of all citizens, across the political divide, including those in ZANU PF who are not happy with the deplorable state of affairs pervading our country. It is wrong and crass for anyone to associate my position in the MDC ALLIANCE with my role in this all-inclusive and broad based movement of citizens.

I am not playing my role on the instructions of my party position but the role allocated to me by the stakeholders driving the 31st July Movement.

Therefore when I speak, I am speaking on behalf of the broad citizens not on behalf of any political party.

This is because citizen interests cut across the political divide. That is the objective of the 31st July Movement: to unite all our citizens.

Zimbabwe needs unity today beyond political colour than at any given time.

Ramaphosa Fires DG Who Hired Own Small House

President Cyril Ramaphosa has placed Dr Dovhani Mamphiswana, the director-general of the Public Service Commission on precautionary suspension.

This was announced by the Presidency in a statement on Wednesday night. Acting spokesperson for the Presidency, Tyrone Seale, said Ramaphosa had informed Mamphiswana of his suspension last Thursday.

“The president informed the director-general on Thursday, August 6, that the suspension, with full pay, takes effect immediately.

“The president’s suspension of the director-general does not in any way constitute a judgment on the part of the president,” said Seale.

In July, Independent Media reported that a 37-page report into allegations that Mamphiswana orchestrated the hiring of his mistress recommended that he and the mistress should be charged with fraud and corruption, among other charges.

The report was compiled by Advocate Smanga Sethene on the instruction of the State attorney in Pretoria. During the investigation, friends of the mistress alleged one of the baby showers was held within PSC offices.

The instruction to probe the allegations came in January this year, after the Sunday Independent reported that Mamphiswana allegedly chaired a panel which recommended the appointment of the mother of his child as a chief director for professional ethics.

Sethene later noted that the report by the investigative Sunday newspaper was based on truths.

Seale said Mamphiswana was a precautionary suspension in terms of the Disciplinary Code and Procedures for Members of the Senior Management Services (SMS) contained in Chapter 7 of the SMS Handbook for the public service.

Seale said a report on the investigation was presented to the president in his capacity as the executive authority designated by law to deal with career incidents, including disciplinary matters, pertaining to Directors-General.

“The report submitted to the president has recommended that the president institute formal disciplinary action against Dr Mamphiswana.

“The president subsequently advised the director-general of his intention to place him on precautionary suspension.

“Following written representations by Dr Mamphiswana, the president decided to proceed with the precautionary suspension,” said Seale.

Zim Political Turmoil: Democratic Alliance Takes On Ramaphosa

Ramaphosa

We are calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to withdraw his appointment of Baleka Mbete and Sydney Mufamadi as Special envoys to Zimbabwe because of their political bias towards the ZANU-PF-led regime in Zimbabwe.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to withdraw his appointment of Baleka Mbete and Sydney Mufamadi as Special envoys to Zimbabwe because of their political bias towards the ZANU-PF-led regime in Zimbabwe.

Failure to withdraw these two individuals will render the mission a farce and an attempt by President Ramaphosa to cover up the human rights abuses that Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has been committing against defenseless Zimbabweans.

If the President refuses to withdraw these ‘envoys’, we call on the Zimbabwean people to reject this poor attempt to whitewash their abuse and suffering at the hands of Mnangagwa’s military government.

Her counterpart, Sydney Mufamadi, refused to meet with opposition leaders in Zimbabwe in 2007 when he was sent by then-president Thabo Mbeki in response to the country’s escalating political crisis, choosing instead to focus his attention on the then-president Robert Mugabe.

In fact, both Mbeki and Mufamadi insisted that the opposition leaders recognise Mugabe as the legitimate leader of Zimbabwe before political talks could begin.

Under this cloud of political bias, Ramaphosa’s ‘envoys’ cannot claim to be acting on behalf of the South African government.

They are ANC functionaries who have been sent by Ramaphosa to express solidarity with Mnangagwa’s murderous government.

Mnangagwa’s government has used the cover of Covid-19 to unleash an unprecedented attack on individual freedoms by arresting journalists like Hopewell Chin’ono, whose only crime was exposing corruption, and using force to stop citizens from exercising their right to protest.

What Zimbabweans do not need at the moment is Ramaphosa using the ANC’s solidarity with ZANU-PF to engineer an international cover-up of Zimbabwe’s escalating political and economic crisis.

‘Quiet diplomacy’ should never be allowed to turn into ‘Cover-up Diplomacy’-Democratic Alliance

Oxford University Community Denounces Abuse Of Human Rights In Zimbabwe

Police

Farai Dziva|Another international group, Oxford University Community has urged Emmerson Mnangagwa to respect human rights.

Mnangagwa is using State agents and the courts to silence dissenting voices.

See statement below:

We, the undersigned students, staff, affiliates and alumni of the University of Oxford, condemn the violent suppression of political expression and peaceful protest in Zimbabwe, the arrests of citizens engaging in safe and peaceful protest and the abduction, harassment and torture of Zimbabweans.

We call on the Government of Zimbabwe, the Zimbabwe Republic Police, Zimbabwe Defence Forces and the security services to end the de facto state of emergency that is restricting movement in the urban centres of Zimbabwe. It is clear that this action is designed primarily to suppress criticism of the government rather than to address Covid-19.
We are concerned about the growing number of people who have been arrested or abducted for criticising the government.

This includes journalist, Hopewell Chin’ono, and opposition political leader, Jacob Ngarivhume, who are still in custody after being arrested for calling for peaceful protests against corruption on social media and denied bail.

Chin’ono had been instrumental in exposing corruption relating to the procurement of Covid-19 supplies.

We are alarmed at the arrests on 31 July of many Zimbabweans, including award-winning novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga, several opposition political leaders including spokesperson, Fadzayi Mahere, disability rights activists such as Henry Chivhanga, as well as many more ordinary citizens for doing nothing more than stepping onto the street holding the national flag or placards, peacefully and in small, socially distanced demonstrations.

This is in flagrant violation of section 59 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe, which guarantees the right to demonstrate peacefully, and of Article 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Zimbabwe is a party.

While some of these people have been released on bail, others are still in custody and all are facing criminal charges simply for exercising their constitutional rights.

These arrests follow the spate of recent arrests of teachers, nurses, trade unionists, students, human rights lawyers, constitutionalism activists and others, on charges that arise from nothing more than demanding decent work conditions and publicly speaking out against corruption.

The arrests and detentions are happening at a time when Covid-19 cases are on the rise in Zimbabwe and these actions expose those detained to a high risk of contracting the disease in detention.

We demand that all political prisoners are released immediately and the baseless charges against them are dropped.

We are particularly alarmed at the abductions and torture of Zimbabweans, most recently Tawanda Muchehiwa, who was abducted by state agents in collaboration with the Zimbabwe Republic Police during the 31 July protests and tortured, following several similar instances recently.

We strongly condemn these practices and call for immediate investigations and prosecution of the perpetrators.

We call on the Southern African Development Community and the African Union to discharge their responsibilities to issue statements condemning the arrests, abductions and harassment of citizens and activists in Zimbabwe and to take action against Zimbabwe.

We call on the United Nations and its special mechanisms to actively monitor the situation in Zimbabwe, condemn human rights violations and take appropriate action against the Government of Zimbabwe.

We call on the international community as a whole – governments, civil society and the people of the world – to stand in solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe and to speak out against the violations of human rights and suppression of democracy in Zimbabwe.-Oxford University Community

Mnangagwa’s Daughter Arrested On VP Chiwenga’s Orders | WHAT’S HAPPENING?

As reports surface suggesting Vice President Constantino Chiwenga is the one who fired Emmerson Mnangagwa’s cousin, Obadiah Moyo, Mnangagwa’s daughter was reportedly detained at Mazowe police station after it emerged that she was part of the rampant illegal mining.

The development comes as Chiwenga today took charge over several ministry portfolios including that of Agriculture.

The below article was published by the Bulawayo24 website and it says:

Chido Mnangagwa who is one of Mnangagwa’s children is being sucked in corrupt mining deals and is reported to have been nabbed for riverbed mining with highly placed sources saying the call was made by Vice President Constantino Chiwenga though the case was later swept under the carpet.

According to the source, the arrest of Chido came a few days after Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe and Mines Minister Winston Chitando toured the Mazowe River area to assess the state of illegal mining activities by the Chinese.

“Chido who is ED’s daughter was arrested earlier this week (Monday) for her involvement in riverbed mining activities together with one of ED’s motorcade bikers.

The directive is said to have been made by VP Chiwenga,” the source said

“The arrest came a few days after Home Affairs Minister Kazembe Kazembe, minister of mines Winston Chitando and police Commissioner Mahoya paid a visit to Mazowe to assess illegal mining activities in the area.

The arrest which was more of a warning has since been shrouded and swept under the carpet,” added the source.

Efforts to get a comment from both Mnangagwa’s daughter and the police were futile.

However, Environmental Management Agency (EMA) has since directed the closure of about four mines in the province due to illegal mining activities.

This is not the first time that Mnangagwa’s children have been accused of illegal mining since Collins Mnangagwa is alleged to be closely connected to the corrupt Jumbo Mine.-Byo24news

Mnangagwa Threw Tantrums At The S.A. Envoy

MDC Vice president Tendai Biti while speaking to eNCA News said President Emmerson Mnangagwa is not yet ready to resolve the national crisis. Biti was basing his claims on the fact that his party and other opposition parties were snubbed by the SA Envoys sent by Ramaphosa to speak to Zimbabwe and he blamed the snub on the government as he said the president reportedly threw tantrums and said there was no need for an intervention in Zimbabwe at the meeting yesterday. SA Covid-19 Recovery Rate Hits 75%

SOUTH Africa’s Covid-19 recovery rate has increased to 75% – its highest to date and well above the global average of 62%.

This means out of the country’s cumulative total of 566 109 confirmed Covid-19 cases, 426 125 have recovered, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced on Tuesday night.

There has also been a decrease in coronavirus-related fatalities – 130 people have succumbed to the disease in the past 24 hours, down from 213 in the Department of Health’s last update on Monday.

This brings South Africa’s total deaths due to the virus to 10 751.

Provincially, the latest fatalities were reported as follows: 20 in the Eastern Cape, 35 in Gauteng, 30 in KwaZulu-Natal, 20 in North West, and 25 in the Western Cape.

“We convey our condolences to the loved ones of the departed and thank the healthcare workers who treated the deceased,” Mkhize said.

KZN has edged past the Western Cape and is now the province with the second most recorded cases, with Gauteng remaining the country’s hotspot. KZN has to date recorded 100 494 cases, the Western Cape 100 316, while Gauteng now stands at 194 093 cases.

South Africa still remains fifth overall worldwide, behind the US, Brazil, India and Russia. Mexico and Peru are next in line with 492 522 and 483 133 cases respectively.

By Tuesday, the total number of tests conducted in South Africa was 3 278 977, with 11 483 new tests conducted since the last report on Monday. data by 11 August.

Ngarivhume Sent Back To Chikurubi Prison For Another Week

Jacob Ngarivhume

Transform Zimbabwe leader, Jacob Ngarivhume will spend another week behind bars after the Harare Magistrates Court delayed his bail hearing to next week Monday on the grounds that the designated magistrate was not available to preside over the matter.

Ngarivhume who was the convener of the failed 31 July demonstration, was arrested together with journalist Hopewell Chin’ono on charges of inciting public violence.

Updating journalists outside the Harare Magistrates Court, Ngarivhume’s lawyer Moses Nkomo said they will have to explore other avenues to seek justice for his client.

Nkomo said he had notified the state of his intention to apply for bail on changed circumstances today, which they accepted only for the Magistrates court to set Monday next week as the hearing date.

“We have just been shocked to be advised that the application cannot be heard today because the magistrate who is specifically assigned to deal with these kind of cases is not available, this is despite the fact that bail applications by their nature are urgent and should be treated as urgent. So unfortunately we have to wait until Monday that’s when we were advised that the magistrate specifically assigned to deal with Jacob’s matter will be available. So its quite unfortunate we have to explore other avenues to seek justice for Jacob,” said Nkomo.

“We Are Under Siege, ” – Opinion From ZANU PF

Opinion By ZANU PF The Patriot

Zanu PF members at sixes and sevens

THE major reason the independence celebrations in 1980 were tinged with a slight sense of relief was that there was a nagging, unavoidable belief that the enemy would soon regroup and try to destabilise the country.

“I don’t believe in majority rule ever in Rhodesia…. Not in a 1 000 years,” colonial Rhodesia henchman and the then Prime Minister Ian Smith said in a televised address on March 20 1976.

He amplified that narcissist belief with the odd claim that blacks would not rule the country without the support of whites.

The controversial leader was, to an extent, right in his warped belief.

Giving credit to the devil, he had, with a sense of hindsight, studied the behavioural pattern of some blacks in our midst.

It did not take long for whites to exhibit their true colours, as they hung onto the land for 10 years through that infamous Willing Buyer Willing Seller Lancaster Conference clause.

Now water under the bridge, the inescapable reality was that the chief grievance of the liberation struggle needed to be addressed and that blacks wanted their land back.

Heroes and heroines were born out of that painful struggle.

A solid defence force was also born out of that protracted struggle for freedom.

It happened in 2000 through the Land Reform and Resettlement Programme which has to date empowered more than 400 000 households, who have been sowing and reaping on their ancestral lands the Government assisted them to reclaim.

Therein lies the many problems that we have been facing as a country.

Zimbabwe has been labelled a pariah state by its enemies both inside and outside the country because of the Land Reform Programme.

There were serious efforts to derail implementation of that historic programme since 1980 by the West.

We give an orderly account of events that took place prior to the execution of the programme.

We will draw from the New African magazine’s November 11 2018 article by Baffour Ankomah titled, ‘Why Robin Cook’s Ghost is Smiling’.

“On this momentous day, November 30 2007, Stan (Mudenge, former Zimbabwe Minister of Foreign Affairs) pulled me aside to a corner of the Zimbabwean Grounds, where we could hear ourselves above the din of the commotion caused by the march. A great historian, Stan reminisced about the escapades of 2000-2001, and told me: ‘In one of our meetings with the British government in London, Robin Cook (who was foreign secretary under Prime Minister Tony Blair) pulled me aside and told me: ‘Stan, you guys must get rid of Bob’.” Bob is the moniker for Robert Mugabe.

Stan said he pretended he had not heard what Cook had said, so he asked him: ‘What did you just say?’ Cook replied: ‘You heard me right. I said you guys must get rid of Bob’. Stan said he told Cook: ‘We can’t get rid of Bob. As much as you guys want him out, we want him in’. At this point, Stan said Cook looked at him hard in the eye and told him point-blank: ‘Well, don’t say we didn’t warn you. If you guys don’t get rid of Bob, what will hit you will make your people stone you in the streets’.

Stan said he came back home and reported Cook’s massively threatening words to Mugabe and his cabinet.”

The results have been devastating because of the aggression that the country has been subjected to by the West, who are still opposed to the land reform programme.

Our security forces, who will be honoured next week, have been unfairly labelled because of the role they have played in maintaining peace and security, both within our borders and outside.

Every year the country gives a befitting honour to these brave sons and daughter of the soil, the men and women who have given Zimbabwe the much needed security and protection.

But the threats to that peace and security continue to erupt by the day.

Our people’s wellbeing continues to be threatened.

Last week provided yet another pointer that we are under siege as a country.

It was supposed to be the ‘mother of all demonstrations’, an outing that would bring the country to its knees and culminate in a change of leadership.

But as the sun set on July 31 2020, the usual ‘normal’ that we have been living under since March 2020 was there for all to see; a country that has abided by the current lockdown regulations and a people who have put their safety ahead of the anarchy and destruction that had been planned by Western governments through their acolytes.

A certain breeze, uncanny, soothing and undeterred whistled in Harare’s Central Business District on Friday last week, and wishing away the ills that had been meant to destabilise the country.

Missing in action were Job Sikhala, the non-conformist Hopewell Chin’ono and the eccentric Jacob Ngarivhume, organisers of the demonstration.

Chin’ono and Ngarivhume were languishing in prison while Sikhala was, as one would expect, in a hideout that had been provided by the US.

There is a nauseating narrative that normally visits upon us each time there is a major event in the country or across the globe.

We are constantly fed with the narrative of so-called human rights abuses, alleged abductions of activists or the Government not respecting democracy.

Last week’s demonstration was meant to destroy property, to paint a picture of a rogue leadership in the country and indict Zimbabwe of crimes against humanity.

There is nothing unusual or untoward about the arrests of Ngarivhume and Chin’ono.

The gentlemen allegedly incited the masses to violently protest against Government and they were duly nabbed according to the laws that govern the country.

There was nothing peaceful about those demonstrations.

They were planned to destroy property, to cause anarchy and chaos, hence the gleeful support from Western governments, particularly the US, which has yet to dispute allegations that they provided funds for those demonstrations.

When all is said and done, the reality that should be embraced by all, is that Zimbabwe is a sovereign state which should be respected.

ZRP Witch Hunting For Police Officers Providing Jonathan Moyo With Inside Information

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it will conduct investigations to flush out “rogue elements” who are allegedly giving out “false” information to cause alarm and despondency in the country.

In a statement on Wednesday, national police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said it is not true that police officers at ZRP Plumtree are defying instructions as alleged by former Cabinet Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo.

Nyathi blamed bad apples and dark forces within the police force of feeding Prof Moyo with false information.

He said:

The ZRP dismisses the social media post by Professor Jonathan Moyo in connection with alleged defying of instructions at ZRP Plumtree by police officers.

The post is false and should be dismissed with contempt which it deserves. The public is urged to be careful of the misleading posts which are circulating on social media as they do not portray the true picture on the ground. “No to falsehoods”.

Nick Mangwana Says Everything Is Fine In Zimbabwe

AFP

Zimbabwean novelist Tsitsi Dangarembga was arrested during an anti-corruption protest

Zimbabwe’s government spokesman Nick Mangwana on Tuesday denied the country was in crisis despite a recent clampdown on dissent that sparked international outrage and shed light on long-standing social and economic woes.

In a telephone interview with AFP, Mangwana defended the arrests of around 20 activists and opposition figures for peacefully protesting against the government on July 31.

The demonstrations — de-facto banned by anti-coronavirus measures — had been called to denounce alleged state corruption and ongoing economic hardship two years into President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s first term.

“The broken window theory indicates that if you let small crimes take place then bigger crimes will happen,” Mangwana said.

“You have to make sure that a broken window is repaired and that the person who broke that window is arrested,” he added, noting that the detainees were “high-profile” but not numerous.

Among the demonstrators snatched from the street were top Zimbabwean writer Tsitsi Dangarembga and Fadzayi Mahere, a lawyer and spokeswoman for the main opposition party Movement for Democratic Change Alliance.

Both were charged with inciting public violence and released on bail.

Mangwana said justice was “blind” to a person’s social position and that laws applied to everyone.

He rejected all notions of “crisis” in Zimbabwe, claiming it was invented by political opponents seeking to “come into power”.

“Somebody lost an election in 2018 and refused to accept that loss,” Mangwana explained. “For there to be a case for international intervention, what they constantly do is say there is a crisis.”- ‘Economic interventions’ –

Zimbabwe is still reeling from 37 years of economic mismanagement under former president Robert Mugabe, whose iron-fisted rule was ended by a military coup in 2017.

Many Zimbabweans complain that the situation has grown worse since Mnangagwa took power.

The president has struggled to redress galloping inflation that has wiped out savings and rendered basic goods unaffordable to most.

Inflation was over 737 percent in June, one of the highest in the world.

This year, economic hardship has been exacerbated by drought and the coronavirus pandemic.

Nearly two-thirds of Zimbabwe’s 14.4 million inhabitants are predicted to face hunger by the end of 2020, according to the UN’s World Food Programme.

Mangwana admitted Zimbabwe was struggling with hyperinflation but said “certain economic interventions” had helped stabilise prices and address fuel shortages.

He denied reports of food insecurity, pointing out that supermarket “shelves are full”, and blamed economic downturn on lockdown measures to stem the spread of coronavirus.

“Every country is experiencing that, including South Africa,” Mangwana said. “So I don’t know why the COVID-19 attributable challenges would be considered a crisis in Zimbabwe and not a crisis elsewhere.”

The southern African country has seen coronavirus cases surge in recent weeks, with over 4,600 infections and at least 104 deaths recorded to date.

– ‘Propaganda’ –

Critics say Mnangagwa is using coronavirus as a cover to thwart protests and hush his detractors.

Last week, the president vowed to “flush out” what he called “bad apples” and “detractors” that “weaken our systems”.

Rights groups say close to 100 Zimbabwean activists and opposition figures have been abducted and brutalised by suspected state agents operating under Mnangagwa.

“People are faking abductions,” his spokesman rebutted. “When you want to demonise a government you accuse it of all the worst kind of atrocities… it causes all sorts of outrage, and that it exactly the type of negative propaganda Zimbabwe is grappling with at the moment.”

The latest wave of arrests have sparked outrage on social media with the hashtag #ZimbabweanLivesMatter trending worldwide.

The United Nations recently expressed concern about the “clampdown on fundamental freedoms”, while the African Union has urged authorities to “protect human rights”.

Last week, South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa appointed two special envoys to “assist Zimbabwe”.

The veteran politicians met with Mnangagwa on Monday but did not engage with opposition parties, sparking anger in both countries.

Mangwana said “wires got crossed” as “these types of missions” only spoke to heads of state.

LIVE: 4 Year Old Girl Made To Drink Rapist’s Sperm | George Charamba Says Some ANC Leaders Want To Remove ZANU PF | Hopewell Chinono and Jacob Ngarivhume Court Fight | The African Union Position On Mnangagwa | NEWS REVIEW.

https://twitter.com/ZimEye/status/1293587002001182723?s=19

It was in July 2019 I had my 4 year old grand daughter on my back, and she suddenly became frightened then quickly told me, “Alvin made me lick his thing.”

Then I asked her, did you say “a thing”? Then after that Alvin was passing by the roadside and as soon as she saw him she screamed at him saying Alvin you made me lick your thing well inside your space bedroom. Then Alvin replied saying you will get me in trouble, you will get me beaten up.

And then my granddaughter replied insisting yes you made me lick your thing. And then I told her you you come down my daughter you will tell your mother when she returns. The mother then arrived to collect the baby with a vehicle from the crèche because her mother works at the crèche.

When it was now evening time, I asked her if she has communicated with her mother and she said her mother did not say anything.

So now I had to turn to to my own son I said to him your daughter said this to me in the morning and he said let me wait for my wife to come back. Then the child’s mother when she returned said let me talk to my mother who is also Alvin’s mother. And he apologised saying sorry mama. so now after that I said let me take my granddaughter to be seen by a doctor and I was fearing that she could have been made to drink sperm fluids. I didn’t think that time that she was raped. At that point the mother refused to go to the doctor. I said since the mother has refused to go to the doctor let us go to the police. At the police they said that the child must be brought here and taken to the doctor so that she is assessed. Let the mother bring the child here, she might have suffered more than just sucking a thing she could have been raped.

We then told the mother and she went with the child’s to the police and she was given a letter to take to the doctor and she was told that the results would be obtained from the police. The mother went to the police on her own she did not go with the husband. She was given the results and returned and they communicated between themselves. the child’s father asked for the report and the mother said that nothing happened to the child. The father updated us, so after that I went to the police, and the police told me, gogo, we wanted to tell you that you’re daughter was not only made to suck someone’s thing, she was gored into, she was literally raped.

I want to tell you my family I cried and cried, a 4-year old child being literally raped, and then the mother refuses to speak. They said to me please stop crying tomorrow we are going to social welfare office.

The child’s mother and the boy’s mum got frightened when she discovered that we now know the truth. They said that at the social welfare we shall be told when to go to court.
Then after that the case was delayed and I returned to the police and a cop said I went and I was told that the person we’ve handling your granddaughter’s case is on annual leave. So I was told that I would be told next week. when he had returned the following week I was told that he has walked out of the office and it was not clear where he has gone.

Charamba Says Zimbabwe Is Far Much Developed That Most SADC Countries, Tells Lindiwe Zulu To Shut Up

Lindiwe Zulu

President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s spokesperson George Charamba has declared that Zimbabwe is better than most SADC countries and will soon be better than South Africa.

Charamba was responding through a Twitter post to Lindiwe Zulu, Chairperson of the ANC’s international relations committee who said that there is a major crisis in Zimbabwe.

Charamba attacked Zulu saying she was not the best person to comment on the developments in Zimbabwe, a country he said has the capacity to be developed better than every SADC country, were it not for sanctions.

“Relatively speaking, Zimbabwe is a lot better by way of the level of industrialization in relation to other SADC, countries. And with projects which are underway, very soon Zimbabwe should be able to peep at South Africa as an alternative industrial hub.

“The western world is aware of this and is doing its damndest to stop that from happening. Of course, they will fail. What Zimbabwe will not countenance are career politicians from elsewhere who seek to use Zimbabwe and her sanctions-related challenges to build personal profiles and names for international appointments. That would be blatantly cynical and very unfriendly.

Charamba poured cold water on rumours of a government of national unity, GNU” which many believe could take the country ou out of the political and economic mess it is in.

He said the discussion must be had by all SADC countries, not the ANC government.

“Again, I am not sure the ANC govt can do anything about that (mediation of a GNU). Or to imagine that creating a GNU in Zimbabwe a very foolish proposition which is entertained by some elements in the ANC will change that structural deformity. Not even an ouster of Zanu-PF would change that,” he said.

“A Team Of 8 People Sit The Entire Day Doing Nothing,” Biti Blasts Mnangagwa “Tea Conference” With Ramaphosa Envoys.

263chat

Tendai Biti

MDC Alliance vice president Tendai Biti has blasted President Emmerson Mnangagwa after President Cyril Ramaphosa’s envoys failed to meet with members of the opposition despite an earlier commitment to seek their views on the current political situation in the country.

Speaking following the ‘snub’, Biti said they were disappointed but not surprised by the developments despite a formal communication that they were going to meet the delegation.

“The actions and tantrums of Emmerson Mnangagwa are not acceptable. We were clearly disappointed because you cannot make an entire delegation, a team of 8 people sit the entire day doing nothing. We are not surprised by the actions Of Emmerson Mnangagwa,” said Biti

He said since Mnangagwa took over from late President Robert Mugabe the country took a nosedive into unparalleled economic collapse.

“It is now three years since the departure of Robert Mugabe but Emmerson Mnangagwa has taken our country to unprecedented levels of failure, of collapse and fragility. He is clearly presiding over the worst government in the history of governments. His actions and activities do not surprise us at all,” he said

On whether there was a possibility of a Transitional Government, Biti said there was no hope under President Mnangagwa.

“Under Emmerson Mnangagwa we don’t have hope. I think the man lives in a deluded world. He suffers from a reality distorted status quo. But beyond Mnangagwa they should be possible to establish dialogue presided over by SADC, AU in respect of which a political settlement can be reached with establishing a National Transitional Authority.” said Biti

Special envoys from South African President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the country on Monday and met with President Mnangagwa much to the disappointment of the country’s opposition who had anticipated a meeting after they were formally told they would meet the envoys.

Former Highlanders Great Appeals For Help To Save His Ailing Son Who Is Also A Footballer.

Young Bonginkosi Khoza needs urgent help.

IT’S always a painful experience for a parent to watch a child’s health deteriorating daily, but sadly this has been the experience of former Highlanders’ tear away winger Sizabantu Khoza since his 12-year-old son Bonginkosi was diagnosed with septic arthritis in May.

Septic arthritis is a painful infection in a joint, which can come from germs that travel through the bloodstream from another part of the body. It can also occur when penetrating injury delivers germs directly into the joint.

Bonginkosi is a two-time championship winner with Mountain Climbers and Highlanders Under-14 last year.

His football future now looks bleak unless he gets urgent medical attention.

The costs involved are beyond the reach of his loving father, who during his playing days won four back-to-back league titles with a fearsome Bosso side and was also a darling of the team’s multitude of fans.

Khoza senior also had a short stint at Caps United, but is considered a Highlanders great.

He told Chronicle Sport that his son first complained about feeling pain from the groin and later started limping.

The boy was taken to hospital where tests were conducted and doctors confirmed that he had septic arthritis.

“He then underwent an operation. The infection somehow affected his lungs and he had to stay in the intensive care unit for 10 days,” said Khoza.

He said Bonginkosi was trying to walk with the aid of a walking frame, but things took a turn for the worst last week.

“Last week he suddenly said he was feeling extreme pain on his tandem muscle and couldn’t even move his leg. He is still under the doctor and going for his dressing every five days and every time he goes for wound dressing. I need to have a special bandage which costs US$10 per day and I am struggling to raise that amount. What pains me most now is that my boy is always crying in pain and some of the words he utters while crying really make me wonder if I am a good father to him.

But I am trying my best to ensure that he heals and returns to football, a game he loves so much. Another doctor recently told me to buy medication called Stemcell, which costs US$70, an amount beyond me at the moment,” said a visibly dejected Khoza.

“I Have Consolidated Democracy And Rule Of Law” Insist Mnangagwa – Dog Claiming To Put Out Furnace Fire With It’s Puny Fart

By Patrick Guramatunhu- “Muromo hauzarirwi nerwizi!” is a Shona adage highlighting the disparity between what one says they can do and actually doing it.

“What kind of power was it if everybody knew that it would never be used?” asked the great African writer and intellectual, Chinua Achebe in his book Arrow of God. He too was questioning the foolishness of mystical powers those claiming they can do this and that and yet never do any of those things.

“Better to say that it was not there, that it was no more than the power in the anus of the proud dog who tried to put out a furnace with his puny fart.”

Zimbabwe’s proud dog has been farting, again!

“The Second Republic since its inception accelerated the entrenchment and consolidation of democracy and constitutionalism and the rule of law in pursuit of social justice and equal opportunities for the economic empowerment of the previously marginalised majority,” said Mnangagwa in his Heroes’ Day address to the nation.

You blatantly rigged the July 2018 elections, ZEC failed to produce even something as basic for democratic elections as a verified voters roll!

“Informed by a cardinal ethos during the liberation struggle, the Second Republic thrust in the fight against corruption is unwavering. My administration the reform makes no apologies for fixing our systems across the socio, economic and political spectrum.

Zimbabwe is a pariah state ruled by corrupt, incompetent and murderous thugs; just as it was during Mugabe’s days, the so called First Republic. No one wants to do business with in a pariah state and hence the reason the  economic meltdown has continued. The corona virus pandemic has made the economic situation even worse. You have fixed nothing!

“Accountability and transparency will keep on being enforced in every facet of our society. The door to the old manner of doing things is closed. The corrupt way is shut and those who choose that route will face dire consequences.”

Yeah! You have just thrown Journalist Hopewell Chin’ono in jail and his only “crime” was that he dared to reveal the details of the US$ 60 million Drax scandal. The regime has since fired the former Minister of Health and Child Care, Obediah Moyo, who is at the heart of the scandal. The Minister is out on $50 000 bail and the chances are the whole case will fizzle out  “for lack of evidence”!

The only reason President Mnangagwa just like President Mugabe before him, have been able to make outrageous promises of mass economic prosperity;  2 million jobs in the next five years; free and fair elections; etc. without a care in the world; is because they knew no one will ever hold them to democratic account.

So as long as Zimbabweans continued to be denied a meaningful free vote then there really is no difference between the First Republic and the Second Republic, Achebe’s puny dog fart and Mnangagwa’s promises!

The Zimbabwean Political Allegory: “A Dystopian Complex”

By Terence Q Ndlovu- Read it to me Benjamin, Muriel the goat bleats pleadingly:

“…, and all animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.”

This quote from George Orwell’s Animal Farm novel is peculiarly illuminating, especially within the Zimbabwean political arena.

Like the pigs in the story, the promise of an independent and egalitarian society disappeared the moment they attained power and to maintain power, the leaders have resorted to obscuring and controlling the narratives, through control of state media.

The continuous need to control and spin the narrative doesn’t affect Zimbabwe’s political playing field alone, in his deleted tweet for political reasons of course, the United States president, Donald Trump indicated how honoured he was to have hosted Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas.

Calls from Botswana’s opposition party and the delegation sent by South African President, Cyril Ramaphosa fell on deaf ears, as the current status quo of Zimbabwe was said to be of no consequence to outsiders.

The Democratic Alliance tweeted, that as the chairman of the African Union, President Cyril Ramaphosa, was faced with the daunting task of either standing with the people of Zimbabwe against the tyranny of the ZanuPF led government or continue with the failed policy of

“Quiet Diplomacy”

In his Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle describes the happy life intended for man by nature as one lived in accordance with virtue.

And in his Politics, he describes the role that politics and the political community must play in bringing about the virtuous life in the citizenry.

But such an envisaged Utopian society is a far fetched reality within the African political allegory.

For once in power those that hold it, cannot help but abuse it, as power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

For this mere fact equality will continue to be a fleeting reality not only for Zimbabwe and her people but for communities where the elected leaders continue to usurp the civil liberties of their voting masses.

In addressing the people’s concern for affordable meat, President Mnangagwa responded,

“Meat? What about vegetables? Vegetables are healthy; that is what doctors have always said, meat is not healthy, we have to agree on that. All vitamins are those in vegetables and potatoes,”

The Pseudo-Logic that Underlines Existing Disparities in Zimbabwe

“…, pigs dislike this better food, but they make a sacrifice to eat milk and apples because they are the “brainworkers” and are essential to organizing and managing the farm, pigs need this richer, better food because the whole farm depends on them”, Squealer explains.

Fast forward three months later, in his Precabe Farm in Kwekwe, President Mnangagwa stated,

“At this farm, we have plenty of livestock including cattle, sheep, goats, pigs and countless poultry. From all those we eat whatever, we want when we feel like”

The similarities between Orwell’s animal farm and Africa politics is uncanny, and in a way has proved relevant even in Zimbabwean politics to date.

While many struggle to make ends meet, amidst hyper inflated prices, those in power seem to be unfazed or affected by the plight and challenges of the marginalized majority.

For Zimbabwe, a country once hailed as the bread basket of Africa, something has to give. A tide of change ripples through the disgruntled masses, but the question still remains will it be enough?

Cry my beloved country, cry my Zimbabwe and with the vast calls for change emanating from the millions in the diaspora, and those on the ground easily coerced to conform.

The jury is out on whether there will be any plausible change anytime soon.

Oppah Muchinguri’s Brother Grabs A House In Harare And Sells It Leaving The Family Suffering.

Dear Editor Zimeye:

David Muchinguri brother to Oppah Muchinguri sold my house in Greendale Harare.

The house is straight down Mutare Road, just before Jaggers Msasa traffic cycle, Greendale.

The man has declared himself untouchable in Zimbabwe.

The house was sold to Kusangaya family and they confirm to paying David Muchinguri cash. Our house was our life saving and only investment.

Our predicament is that we don’t have money to sue him to recover our house and we know the court will not help add they will work on his favour.

On top of the house, David and his son David Junior also took my car a BMW and a lot of valuables that we left at our home and never paid us.

I’m truely humbled by the work you do for us as a community.

I am extremely hurting from what David Muchinguri has put my family through. I have sold everything we had just to survive while he took full payment for house and never gave us a cent of it.

I’m a motor mechanic and I have had to sell my car to pay rent. This has made my situation very difficult whenever I have a breakdown to attend to. I have to use an Uber to get my job done.

What is left for me now is to even sell my tools and car diagnostic machines to feed the family.

Our plan was to sell the house and invest the money to buy a tow truck and workshop equipment for business to sustain us as a family.

“Go To Harare And Meet Opposition” Ramaphosa Advised After Envoys Are Forced To Eat Humble Pie

By Patrick Guramatunhu- The decision by the Zimbabwean government to deny President Cyril Ramphosa’s envoys an opportunity to meet with opposition leaders was not only disrespectful to the office of the African Union Chairperson, which Ramaphosa currently holds, but seems to confirm that the voices of the opposition and civil society are being muzzled in Zimbabwe,” reported Bulawayo 24.

“The Democratic Alliance (DA) now calls on President Ramaphosa, in his capacity as AU Chairperson, to show leadership and go to Harare and meet with all the relevant stakeholders and get a balanced picture of the political crisis unfolding in the country.”

The decision by Mnangagwa to send back SA President Cyril Ramaphosa’s envoys without allowing them to meet any of the other stakeholders they had expressly said they wanted to meet was rude and disrespectful of the envoys and the man who had send them.

However contrary Mnangagwa’s point of view happened to be as to what is wrong in Zimbabwe, he still had to respect President Ramaphosa’s right to differ. By telling the envoys to their faces that they would not be allowed to meet anyone, after they had come this far, Mnangagwa knew he was throwing his weight around and doing so to humiliate Ramaphosa. That was uncouth and totally uncalled for!

Still, we cannot but ask why President Cyril Ramaphosa send these envoys when there is no hope of SADC getting solving the Zimbabwe crisis.

The root cause of Zimbabwe’s economic and political crisis is the country’s failure to hold free, fair and credible elections. The country has been stuck with this corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship for 40 years now. Four decades of gross mismanagement and rampant corruption have left the country in economic ruins and 34% of the population, according to a 2019 WB report, are living in extreme poverty.

After a particularly obnoxious 2008 election process in which Zanu PF blatantly cheated and used wanton violence to stay in power, SADC leaders refused to recognise Mugabe and his Zanu PF thugs as the constitutionally elected government. The regional body pressure Mugabe to accept the need to implement a raft of democratic reforms designed to stop Zanu PF cheating and using violence.

It is a great tragedy that not even one reform was implement during the 2008 to 2013 GNU. The MDC led by the late Morgan Tsvangirai, who were entrusted to implement the reforms, turned out to be breathtakingly corrupt and incompetent, they failed to implement even one reform in five years.

What is clear is that Mnangagwa will never implement any reforms, even if SADC could get him to agree to another power sharing arrangement with MDC. Since Zanu PF cannot be trusted to implement the reforms, the only option left is for the party to step down. SADC has already endorse Zanu PF as the legitimate government and so, unlike in 2008, the regional body has no leverage to force Zanu PF to step down.

So if President Cyril Ramaphosa should listen to the DA and “go to Harare and meet with all the relevant stakeholders”! Then he must be prepared to go the full hog and force Mnangagwa and Zanu PF to step down because President Ramaphosa will look really foolish if at the end of the new GNU no reforms are implemented and Zanu PF rigs the elections!

Soccer Star Bashes Referee

Referee bashed

Former Russia midfielder and captain Roman Shirokov is facing criminal charges after he attacked a referee during an amateur game on Monday.

According to reports in Russia, Shirokov, 39, knocked off the match official, Nikita Danchenko, with a punch on the face before repeatedly kicking him in the stomach.

The chaos started when the ex-Russian international was not awarded a penalty following a challenge inside the box. He yelled in protest and the referee stopped the game to give him a card.

The ex-Zenit Petersburg man threatened Danchenko, declaring: “If you show a red one, I’ll give you [making a fist].”

And when the referee drew a red card, Shirokov started attacking him.

The match official suffered facial injuries during the attack.

Danchenko suffered a broken eyebrow. He later posted on his Instagram saying: “I spent four to four and a half hours in the hospital, then another 15-20 minutes in the emergency room.

“They put stitches everywhere, did a bunch of examinations. And most importantly, everything seems to be fine with me.

“What does not kill you will make you stronger, as they say. Therefore, we continue to go further and continue to work.

Madhuku Walks Out On Mnangagwa’s Tribunal

THE defence team of suspended Supreme Court Judge Justice Francis Bere walked out of the inquiry last week protesting over the rejection of a request to have one of the tribunal members to recuse himself from the matter because of his alleged connection to the key witness.

The lawyers were also not content with a further six months extension of the tribunal, following the expiry of the given four months..

Justice Bere appeared before the tribunal set up to inquire into his fitness to hold office on Thursday after the High Court ruled last week on Tuesday that the Judicial Service Commission’s advice to President Mnangagwa to initiate the tribunal was in line with the dictates of the law.

Lead defence counsel Advocate Firoz Girach, Advocate Lewis Uriri and Prof Lovemore Madhuku walked out of the hearing protesting over what they claimed to be a “violation of legal procedure”.

The drama started when the tribunal convened for the reading of the allegations of misconduct against Justice Bere.

The defence team requested for recusal of Advocate Takawira Nzombe on the basis that he was known to key witness Mr Itayi Ndudzo, who is at the centre of the judge’s misconduct allegations.

But the tribunal tossed out the request for lack of merit as it did not establish the degree of apprehension of bias that could not warrant a member of the tribunal to recuse himself.

Earlier on the defence had unsuccessfully challenged the lifespan of the tribunal, to hear evidence. It was noted that “paragraph d” of the Proclamation 1 of 2020 contradicted “paragraph f” of the same as it was apparent on the face of the Proclamation that there was a typographical error which, has since been corrected by General Notice 2090 0f 2020.

However, at the commencement of the hearing on Wednesday of last week, Justice Bere’s legal team walked out of the proceedings of the of the tribunal, citing that the correction of the error “is null and void” because it was done out of time, which the JSC argued is incorrect.

Prof Madhuku confirmed the development protesting over the manner, the tribunal was handling the matter.

“We cannot allow the tribunal to violate legal procedures,” said Prof Madhuku without defining their next move.

Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Permanent Secretary Mrs Virginia Mabhiza confirmed the development.

“It would appear lawyers for the judge are determined to avoid the hearing at any cost making one application after another in both the High Court and before the Tribunal,” she said.

“The tribunal has seen it fit and proper to continue with investigations in the absence of Justice Bere.”

The President set up the tribunal inquiry into the fitness of the Supreme Court judge to hold office after a lawyer accused him of interference in a civil case.

Justice Bere was serving on both the Constitutional Court and Supreme Court benches when he was suspended in March this year.

Justice Bere is accused of meddling in a civil case involving the Zimbabwe National Road Administration and his relatives. Justice Bere allegedly telephoned Mr Ndudzo, who was representing Zinara, asking him to consider settling a civil dispute pitting Zinara and Fremus Enterprise.

God Is In Charge -Wiwa

Job Sikhala…

Gabriel Nyoni Speaks On Future At Maritzburg United

Gabriel Nyoni

Farai Dziva|Speedy Zimbabwean winger Gabriel Nyoni is likely to stay at Maritzburg United.

The winger was listed among a number of players expected to be offloaded at the end of the season by the club.

In an interview with The Chronicle, Nyoni said his campaign was affected by injuries and was working on reclaiming his starting place in the team.

“I will let you know if anything happens,” said the 27-year old when asked about his future. “Presently, I am still here at Maritzburg, learning.

“I started about ten games, made a number of appearances from the bench, but then I got a red card as I was getting back to form following an injury.

“To make matters worse, the person who replaced me has been doing well so before the break I was coming from the bench.”

Nyoni also said he would remain in South Africa even if he leaves Maritzburg United.

“At the end of the season I’ll summarise how my stay at Maritzburg was, but at the moment I’ve applied for admission at a South African university for a law programme.

Whatever the case, I’ll be in South Africa, and I’ll continue playing football,” he added.

Health Alert:Diseases That Are Spread By Cockroaches

Health

Cockroaches can spread a range of diseases.

However, unlike mosquitoes , they are not direct vectors of diseases through mechanical transfer and acting as a reservoir.

Transmission occurs indirectly, from consumption or contact with items which have been contaminated by cockroaches, rather than through bites.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) “Cockroaches are not usually the most important cause of a disease, but like houseflies, they play a supplementary role in the spread of some diseases”…

Cockroaches are proven or suspected carriers of the organisms that cause the following infections:

Salmonellosis
Typhoid Fever
Cholera
Gastroenteritis
Dysentery
Leprosy
Plague
Campylobacteriosis
Listeriosis
Giardia
Cockroaches can also trigger asthma and other allergies as well as spread
E.coli , staphylococcus aureus and streptococcus

Zimbabweans Have Lost Dignity Due To Escalating Political Crisis -Lindiwe Zulu

Lindiwe Zulu

Farai Dziva|South Africa’s Social Development Minister, Lindiwe Zulu has pointed out that Zimbabweans have lost dignity as a result of the escalating political crisis.

See article below :

South Africa’s Social Development Minister and ANC head of International Relations Lindiwe Zulu says there is indeed a political crisis in Zimbabwe that has to be dealt with to restore Zimbabwean citizens’ dignity.

Speaking during an interview with eNCA television, Zulu said the ANC should be frank with Zimbabwe’s ruling ZANU PF party without necessarily breaking off relations between the two countries.

Zulu said Zimbabwean people have lost their dignity as most of them who are highly educated are being forced to do menial jobs in South Africa and having to cross the border into neighbouring countries illegally. She said:
In the ANC’s point of view indeed there is a political crisis in Zimbabwe and we have to be frank about it.

If we are to help the situation we have to be frank and honest about it because we are helping ourselves to answer the question: where is the dignity of all the Zimbabweans who are here, where is the dignity of the young women that I see washing cars, running around, some of whom are either teachers?

… where is the dignity in people being chased back at the border when crossing the border illegally?
These are some of the things we have to be very frank about without necessarily breaking relations because we are neighbours but we have to help each other to make sure that Zimbabwe is what Zimbabweans want it to be.

On Monday South African President Cyril Ramphosa sent three envoys to Harare where they met President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House on their mission to ascertain what is happening in Zimbabwe- eNCA

The prosecutor requested the postponement.

MDC Alliance Member Ms Alaika Time said: “We hope that Councillor Kuraone will be granted bail tomorrow. “

Another International Group Piles Pressure On Mnangagwa To Respect Human Rights

Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa

Health Alert: Follow Good Respiratory Hygiene Tips To Prevent Spread Of Covid-19

coronavirus

Stay aware of the latest information on the COVID-19 outbreak, available on the WHO website and through your national and local public health authority. Many countries around the world have seen cases of COVID-19 and several have seen outbreaks.

The situation is unpredictable so check regularly for the latest news.

You can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading COVID-19 by taking some simple precautions:

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Why?Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses. Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth. From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene. This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19.

Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough and difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

Keep up to date on the latest COVID-19 hotspots (cities or local areas where COVID-19 is spreading widely). If possible, avoid traveling to places – especially if you are an older person or have diabetes, heart or lung disease.

Why? You have a higher chance of catching COVID-19 in one of these areas.

Wiwa: Inquiries About My Whereabouts

Job Sikhala...

By Hon Job Wiwa Sikhala
31st July Movement
Spokesperson
12 August 2020

Inquiries are being made about my whereabouts and safety by concerned people of good faith, embassies, friends and relatives.

Court Acquits 7 Civic Leaders Arrested After Landing In Zim From Maldives

Harare Magistrates Court has acquitted seven pro-democracy campaigners arrested and charged with subversion upon arrival at Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport.

The seven have endured 15 months of stringent bail conditions including surrendering their passports and residing at given addresses among other things.

Spectacular end to the persecution of 7 pro democracy campaigners who have been removed from remand today after they were arrested & charged with subverting constitutional govt in May 2020 for plotting to overthrow President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s govt.

Crisis In Zimbabwe: Democratic Alliance Dismisses Ramaphosa Envoys

President Cyril Ramaphosa

“Corruption Right Inside Parliament!”

By Kennedy Kaitano| On 31 July 2020, The Herald carried a story in which the Supreme Court ruled that none of the MDC formations should get money allocated under the Political Parties Finance Act since there were issues pending before the courts.

Also pending before the courts are the cases of MDC Alliance Chairperson Thabitha Khumalo and Senator Lillian Timveous.

Regardless of the cases of the two legislators pending before the courts, you proceeded to inform the Zimbabwe Elections Commission (ZEC) that these seats have fallen vacant in Parliament so that ZEC can institute the process to get the legislators replaced.

Curiously, you submitted only 15 legislators, all of them who got into the august house through proportional representation.

I cannot tell whether Honorable Amos Chibaya, Honorable Prosper Mutseyami and Honorable Charlton Hwende have or do not have cases before the courts which could have led to you not declaring their seats vacant as well, but the names are not on the list of legislators whose seats have been declare vacant.

One suspects therefore that you are doing all this in a corrupt manner. Why should Parliament declare seats vacant for cases that are in the courts, and leave out cases which are not before the courts?

Chances are that there have been behind the scenes discussions between the ZEC, Parliament and the Dr. Khupe faction of the MDC in which it was established that the MDC-T faction lead by Dr. Khupe is the weaker of the two factions.

It is thus obvious that this faction is not capable of winning any contested seats in Parliament.

This then means that the seats that are uncontested in an elections are the ones that should be given to the Dr. Khupe faction to pacify those who had been promised they will enter parliament.

Whichever reasons you may want to use to defend your corrupt deeds, what you did is brazen corruption.

The country’s President, illegitimate as he may be according to the views of some Zimbabweans, has openly and publicly told the world how he is fighting corruption.

One wonders then whether he is genuine about his stance against corruption when corruption is happening inside Parliament and no action being taken.

It remains to be seen how ZEC will handle this one.

Oxford University Community Denounces Persecution Of Innocent Citizens By Emmerson Mnangagwa’s Administration

Mr Emmerson Mnangagwa addressing the Defence Forces commemoration on line.

Scattered Ideas And Crowded Solutions Scuttle Zim Progress

By Tinashe Eric Muzamhindo| Few weeks ago one of the opposition leaders, Jacob Ngarivhume called for national protests which were slated for July 31, 2020. There were social media rants, the message was scattered, and it was all over and the message was not clear whether povo was calling for Mnangagwa’ s ouster, some were calling for Zanu PF to leave, some Zanu PF officials were seen with placards, and some on the social media were calling for corruption to be stopped, alleging that the first family and many senior Government officials including ED himself were involved in Drax International deals and COVID-19 saga. Some were alleging that it was a Zanu PF internal project which was being masterminded by disgruntled officials led by Chiwenga.
Look here Zimbabwe, we have scattered issues, we are not organized and we don’t know what exactly what we want. What was 31 July all about? There was no proper organization of the whole fiasco at the end, there was no solution focused thinking. Let’s come to civic society, they had a different message, and come to the streets, it was a different message, and come to churches, they were calling for prayer for the national leadership. They even launched a national prayer day and fasting at State House, but soon after the launch, they go back to the people, they stay with the same people who are facing hunger, they are also in the midst of Covid – 19 crisis. Scattered ideas and crowded solutions which are not strategically positioned or placed. We have good ideas as a nation, but they are all over and scattered and at the end of the day, we have no progress at all.
Around 2018, Thabo Mbeki flew to Zimbabwe to hold talks with Zimbabwean leader Emmerson Mnangagwa, and eventually he met Nelson Chamisa the President of MDC Alliance, Thokozani Khupe the so called Acting President of MDC T, and other few leaders around, after enjoying himself and taxpayer’s money in one of these luxurious hotels, he left for South Africa.
Whatever, he went and reported to Ramaphosa, it’s known to himself. Mbeki is known for shelving documents, and his popularly known stance, quiet diplomacy approach. When Zimbabweans heard of Mbeki arrival, everyone pinned hopes on a possible pact or GNU to take this country forward. Today we hear of Ramaphosa appointing another envoy led by Mbete and the unpopular National Assembly speaker, only to be surprised this morning to hear that the envoy has left for South Africa.
When I telephoned one senior official, he personally told me two days ago that there were still being accredited at State House, and everyone waited for the envoy to hold meetings, with all stakeholders, opposition parties, civic society, churches, academics and Government of the day, and even driving into suburbs for a fact – finding mission, alas after getting their packed lunch at State House, they left when all wondering what exactly they came to Zimbabwe for ? We have scattered society which does not know what exactly it wants.
Let me take you few steps back, how many documents do we have which were shelved in Zimbabwe? We had ZIM ASSET, JUICE, BUILD, RE – LOAD, SMART AGRICULTURE, COMMAND AGRICULTURE and STEM etc and so many others. Where did those documents go? Zimbabwe is still subjected to poverty, unemployment rate at 96%, urban starvation pegged at 92%, and those ideas are scattered all over the country, those who ran around with those documents are on the fore front of advocating new ideas , lobbying for more new documents and pocketing more donor funds. Life goes on like that. What exactly do we want as Zimbabweans? After all these aftermath documents have been penned, we still remain the same. We don’t have solution focused thinking, we are not solution oriented and we lack political consciousness. We lack merit on these scattered ideas.
” We have another envoy, what happened to the previous envoy? We are alover the shore, too many ideas, documents, political agreements, signatures, we remain the same”
We need solution focused thinking”
Let us move to opposition in Zimbabwe. Do we have an opposition in Zimbabwe? Let’s look straight in each other’s eyes. What has befallen our opposition in Zimbabwe? Today we have an opposition fighting another opposition, grabbing buildings, taking each other to courts, leaving out a vacuum, with no key players to provide an alternative to solution focused thinking. We have witnessed opposition officials recalling their counterparts in Parliament, which was least expected, scattered opposition alover Parliament, scattered opposition alover courts, scattered opposition alover buildings, scattered opposition alover banks fighting for political funding.
So if MDC Alliance is not opposition party, where does it stand now? Where is the opposition, after all these rants from Zanu PF? Do we have an opposition in Zimbabwe? Ok fine, let’s say MDC Alliance is not a political party, where is MDC T in the midst of this crisis? Do we have one? We are likely to witness another drama in 2023, where one gentlemen may want to finish his second term as State President !!! It may be a walk over if opposition remains in this state. We expect opposition to be alternative on ideas and thinking, it looks like they are hiding in buildings, claiming the political space has been closed. If closed, open one for yourself, and get things done. Scattered opposition will find excuses which society is not expecting. We expect solution focused thinking and provide the alternative.
What exactly do we want as Zimbabweans, I repeat?
Today, we have Zimbabweans lives matter, tomorrow let’s unlike the President’s page, so that he has few likes, tomorrow, let’s have Mnangagwa removed from office as State President, this other day, let’s have placards, this other day, some are calling for dialogue, some are calling for stakeholders engagement, fresh bid to have Nelson Chamisa and Emmerson Mnangagwa on the table, this other day, let’s draw the battle line on the sand, on the other hand, we have Zanu PF internal battles, I repeat we have too many scattered ideas, crowded solutions which are not strategically positioned or placed. What do we want exactly?
We need to be solution oriented. We need political consciousness. We need to manage perceptions. Why do I say so? When Ngarivhume called for national protests, he is a less known figures within political circles, and because of that, some were asking who is this Ngarivhume guy? Where is he coming from? Is he not the same with Pastor Evan? Is he not a project? Maybe he is a liberator, why can’t we try him? There was no proper solution focused thinking. We don’t know the exact direction we are taking?
I’m not defending the cause, the current trajectory we have in Zimbabwe requires solution focused thinking. We have Emmerson Mnangagwa at the helm of this country, he is in charge of the instruments of power, whether he won elections or he got away with figures, the fact remains , he is the State President of this country, and solutions evolved around the political orientation must have a clear and proper strategy or solution of what we want exactly as a nation. By the time we arrived at July 31, the conveyor was already in jail.
Last but not least, when Hopewell Chin’ono and Ngarivhume were arrested, many people wrote on Twitter and Facebook, claiming that there are ready to fight for them, some even claimed that they will throng the streets to fight with them, and some said they will break the jail to bring the two from prison. Most of these tweets came from people who were comfortably tweeting from either their beds or well ventilated offices, leaving out Jacob Ngarivhume and Hopewell Chin’ono battling in the prisons. What exactly do we want?
We are the second largest platinum producer in the world, we are the poorest in SADC, if not Africa as a whole, can you believe that this is the country which has platinum, with residents drinking from sewer water? We have gold reserves all over the country, we have alluvial diamonds in Marange which can go a long way, we have other minerals, we have land, we have Human Resources skills, we have mines, so what is our problem?
If you watch ZTV on daily basis, you will believe within seconds that we are making progress. One of these popular writers said to me ” They work on ZTV” . What is our problem? If I may repeat, what is our problem?
In 2018, Nick Mangwana posted many Economic projections e.g Zimbabwe to net 1.8 trillion in six months time. Rullion mine to employ 500 people. Macro stabilization program to earn Zimbabwe revenue of 3 billion. Zimbabweans to get free primary education by 2020. We are in 2020, what has happened?
Where is our problem?
Let me suggest and submit this to you :
1. We need solution focused thinking
2. We have too many crowded solutions which are not strategically placed or positioned
3. We are not solution oriented
4. We lack moral fibre
5. We lack political & economic consciousness
6. Indecisiveness
7. We follow the wind. We are all over
8. We are gifted in attacking each other
9. We are quick to dismiss
10. We are scattered all over.
Let’s draw the line , we must be solution focused and oriented. What do we want exactly?

New Twist to Ngarivhume’s Freedom Bid, Hearing Delayed to Monday Next Week

Incarcerated coordinator of the 31 July anti-corruption protests, Jacob Ngarivhume will spend another week in remand prison following the postponing of his bail hearing to Monday 17 August 2020 due to the absence of the Magistrate designated to handle the matter.

New Twist To Mnangagwa’s White Farmers’ Compensation – It’s Just A Mind Game

ZANU PF spokesman, Patrick Chinamasa is duping white farmers while avoiding the 2008 SADC Tribunal judgment which ruled against the Zimbabwean government, the below advisory argues.

Tribunal Rights Watch – opinion

7 August 2020

Zimbabwe government’s Global Compensation Agreement with two farming organisations raises serious concerns

Patrick Chinamasa, acting secretary for information and publicity in President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ZANU-PF government, has announced that, through the signing of the government’s “Global Compensation Agreement” on 29 July 2020, there is now acceptance from white commercial farmers that there will be no compensation for land from the Zimbabwe government.

Chinamasa emphasised that by agreeing on the amount of compensation for improvements, the time frame for payment and the modalities for raising the resources, ZANU-PF wished it to be known that it no longer considered the Commercial Farmers’ Union (CFU) and the Southern African Commercial Farmers’ Alliance- Zimbabwe (SACFA-Z) to be anti the land redistribution programme.

Further to these comments published in the state-owned Herald newspaper on 5 August 2020, Chinamasa stated that white farmer organisations were now no longer against the taking of their members’ farms. He called for the Commercial Farmers’ Union and other farmers organisations to demand the unconditional lifting of sanctions imposed by the United States.

“As we go into the future, ZANU PF expects the voice of the two organisations in calling for the unconditional lifting of the sanctions to be loud, clear and unambiguous,” he said.

Chinamasa noted that the conclusion of the Global Compensation Agreement was “an acceptance by white commercial farmers that with respect to compensation for land, they should look elsewhere and not to the people of Zimbabwe nor to the Zimbabwe government.

“In terms of section 72(7) of our Constitution, the obligation to pay compensation for land was placed squarely on the shoulders of the former colonial power, the British,” Chinamasa added.

As SADC Tribunal Rights Watch (SADC-TRW), we wish to distance ourselves from the Global Compensation Agreement that the CFU, SACFA-Z and the Valuation Consortium were under extreme pressure to sign – and within a minimal time frame.

However, in the government’s apparent haste to have the agreement signed, even Zimbabwe’s own constitution has been violated in the laid down procedure for the compensation process.

Although the reasons for the pressure were not clear, numerous legal experts and dispossessed farmers, many of them living in dire straits in Zimbabwe or scattered around the world, urged caution and highlighted legal shortcomings in the proposed draft agreement.

SADC-TRW was also concerned that dispossessed farmers were not given prior sight of the actual agreement document before being asked to vote in a referendum on whether or not to accept the agreement, which was presented to them as the last option for compensation from the government.

The reality is that the government is broke and although the parties have agreed to a sum of US$3.5 billion, there is no money available or pledged, and the farming organisations are expected to work with the government to raise it internationally.

Chinamasa is a lawyer and was former Justice Minister during the landmark Campbell case (Mike Campbell (Pvt) Ltd et al. v. Republic of Zimbabwe), which was lodged with the SADC Tribunal in 2007. He has been trying to find ways to circumvent the 2008 SADC Tribunal judgment for the last 12 years.

Chinamasa has made it clear that he believes the Global Compensation Agreement is a great triumph in undermining this historic and binding judgment of the Tribunal.

SADC Tribunal judgment – key points

The Tribunal held that the Zimbabwe government had violated the Southern African Development Community (SADC)’s Treaty by denying access to the courts and engaging in racial discrimination against white farmers whose lands had been confiscated under the land reform program.

The Tribunal also held that the Zimbabwe government had violated the SADC Treaty by denying access to local courts and engaging in racial discrimination in the confiscation of the land.

With respect to the question of who should pay compensation, the Tribunal stated that in international law it is the expropriating state that should pay compensation.

Regarding compensation for the land, the Tribunal noted: “It is difficult for us to understand the rationale behind excluding compensation for such land, given the clear legal position in international law. It is the right of the Applicants under international law to be paid, and the correlative duty of the Respondent [the Zimbabwe government] to pay fair compensation.”

The Tribunal stressed that [the Zimbabwe government] cannot rely on its national law and its Constitution to avoid an international law obligation to pay compensation. The Tribunal was unanimous in its decision that fair compensation should be paid by the Zimbabwe government for land it had unilaterally taken.

It is important to note that more than 75 percent of title deeds were transferred after independence in 1980, after the government had issued “certificates of no present interest”. This meant that government had the first option on any sale. If it did not want a farm for resettlement, it issued a certificate and the farmer could sell his land on the open market.

The Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZDERA)

The Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZDERA) requires that the Zimbabwe government compensates farmers fairly according to the SADC Tribunal judgments, the rule of law and international precedents, guidelines and norms.

Chinamasa claims that President Mnangagwa is leading the way in adhering to the Constitution, particularly Chapter 1, Section 295, subsection 3 (a) that obliges the State to pay compensation for the improvements that were on the land when such land was acquired.

However, the Constitutional Provisions that Chinamasa says President Mnangagwa is respecting in the “deal” are the very same Constitutional Provisions struck down by the SADC Tribunal judgment.

Indeed, if individual farmers do sign up to this “deal” over the next nine months – the time line agreed to – those farmers will be locked into a process which strips them of any further claims or rights that are derived from the landmark SADC Tribunal judgment of 28 November 2008.

This will be tragic given that everything farmers and their families had worked for and invested in over decades – some cases for up to four generations – was taken from them. They lost their entire farming enterprises and livelihoods, including expensive equipment and machinery, standing crops in the ground, livestock and wildlife.

In addition, they lost their homes, household possessions and in many cases cottages built for elderly parents for whom the farms were their source of retirement income. Even the very lives of farmers, family members and farm workers were taken during the frequently brutal land nationalisation process.

Despite the fact that the SADC Tribunal regional human rights court was shut down by the SADC heads of state in 2012 at the instigation of President Mugabe, all judgments made by the Tribunal remain in force and are legally binding.

Should farmers heed the minister’s call to lobby for the dismantling of the sanctions measures and the stipulations of the Zimbabwe Democracy and Economic Recovery Act (ZDERA), they will be siding with a government that is steeped in corruption and continues to perpetrate shocking human rights abuses and to violate the rule of law and property rights.

Ironically, the dispossessed farmers will find themselves in the invidious position of supporting the very tyranny that has left them and their fellow Zimbabweans in the dire position that the majority are currently enduring.

Charamba, Jonathan Moyo Says Special Envoys Have No Business With Anyone Except Head Of States

By Jane Mlambo| Self exiled former cabinet minister Professor Jonathan Moyo and his once surbodinate George Charamba have put to rest the contentious issue of special envoys dispatched by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to Zimbabwe on a fact finding mission, saying their mandate was only between heads of state and no other person as widely thought.

The opposition MDC Alliance on Monday cried foul after they were ‘snubbed’ by Dr Sydney Mufamadi and Baleka Mbete who were send by Ramaphosa to Zimbabwe following a deafening social media outcry by Zimbabweans against human rights abuses perpetrated by suspected state agents.

Posting on Twitter at different intervals, Charamba and Moyo debunked misconceptions that the two envoys were supposed to meet other stakeholders before being denied a chance by the government.

Moyo posted definitions of special envoy, facilitator and mediator to clarify the mandate of the Mufamadi led team.

“SPECIAL ENVOY: a diplomatic messenger who carries a message from A to B, and vice versa. A FACILITATOR: a go-between who eases or lessens tensions between parties. MEDIATOR: a go-between who brokers a deal or agreement between parties,” said Moyo on Twitter.

Charamba also posted a thread titled clearing confusion over purpose and mandate of presidential special envoys.

“Presidential Special envoys are deputations between two heads of State. Theirs is to deliver a message from one head of State to another and, to take back the response to sending Head of State.

“They may not re-interpret their mission or purpose to do any other businesss without undermining their status as special envoys. There is thus no sensible reason to have expected the Mufamadi-led Special Envoys to have branched out of their strict mandate defined by the two interacting Heads of State and Govt by meeting other groups inside the country.

“Simply, that is not the role of Presidential Special Envoys. Second confusion is to imagine this is a sub-regional intervention. It is not. It is merely a BILATERAL interaction between two close Heads of State representing two close sister republics.

“If Sadc has to get involved – and there has to be very good grounds for that outside adulterated images circulated by the hashtag nonsense – that will happen through appropriate mechanism, namely Sadc Organ,” said Charamba under his Twitter name Jamwanda2.

ZERA Warns Service Stations

The Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority (ZERA) says all fuel service stations that buy fuel using Zimbabwe dollars are obliged to accept all forms of payment including mobile money from motorists.

However, the energy regulator said service stations that source fuel using their own offshore funds are allowed to charge fuel in foreign currency only.

ZERA Chief Executive Officer Eddington Mazambani said:

It is illegal to refuse to accept all forms of payment (if fuel was purchased using local currency) and ZERA is working with law enforcement agencies to ensure compliance in the sector.

Only operators who would have used their own offshore funds to source fuel from the traders may sell the product in the currency of their choice.

Mazambani said blending on all fuel imports was saving the country about 20 per cent scarce foreign currency which would have been paid to fuel traders.

He said fuel blending is a government programme which dovetails with regional and global trends as countries are shifting towards cleaner, renewable and environmentally friendly fuels.

D- Day For Jailed MDC Alliance Youth Leader

By A Correspondent- Imprisoned MDC Alliance youth organising secretary Godfrey Kurauone will appear at the Masvingo High Court for a bail hearing this Wednesday.

Kurauone was denied freedom at the magistrates’ court last week in a case where he is accused of inciting citizens to push for President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s ouster.

The State alleges that on June 20 this year, Kurauone, a Masvingo councillor, circulated a video song on social media urging people to revolt.

He is also accused of participating in the failed July 31 anti-corruption protests in which he allegedly blocked free movement of vehicles in Masvingo on the day.

Kurauone is denying both charges.

MDC Alliance youth spokesperson Stephen Chuma on Tuesday said Kurauone, who is incarcerated at Masvingo Remand Prison, is being denied access to proper medication and healthy food in contravention of the Prisons Act.

Chuma said President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s government has resorted to persecuting Kurauone just as the racist Ian Smith regime used detention as a tool to silence critics.

He cited the cases of Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume who are languishing at Chikurubi Maximum Prison for speaking out against corruption.

Mr (real name withheld for his protection), together with his son, slept in police cells as his wife and neighbours were left struggling for clues on how to deal with the police action.

Both CCTV and common footage show how a group of police officers arrived to arrest the man while in the act of self defence for both him and his son yesterday afternoon.

A social worker and a lawyer spent the night assisting the wife as she also said was afraid of going back him.

At 7.30am, Wednesday ZimEye was informed that the father and son have since been released following the attack.

Justice Bere’s Lawyers Walk Out On Tribunal

State Media

Justice Francis Bere.

Commander Zimbabwe Defence Forces, General Philip Valerio Sibanda has warned Zimbabweans to guard against being misled by divisive and dangerous elements who use social media to peddle lies about the country’s security sector.

He was speaking in an interview with ZBC News ahead of this Tuesday’s commemorations to mark Defence Forces Day.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who is the Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces, will today lead the nation in celebrating the Defence Forces Day, a day set aside to pay tribute to the country’s security forces. The celebrations of the Defence Forces come a day after the country celebrated the National Heroes Day, in a virtual ceremony in response to the Covid-19 lockdown limiting public gatherings.

“We are forever grateful to our security service sector, which continues to protect our independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity,” he said.

Usually, thousands throng the National Sports Stadium on this day, but because of the Covid-19 pandemic, this year celebrations will be different after authorities took preventative measures to curb the spread of the pandemic that has killed more than 100 people in Zimbabwe.

In an interview to mark the day, Commander Defence Forces General Philip Valerio Sibanda said the commemorations gave the nation an opportunity to reflect on the historical formation of the ZDF.

“The day is important because the commemorations give the nation an opportunity to reflect on the historical formation of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces in 1980.

“The ZDF was formed from the formerly warring forces of ZANLA and ZIPRA on one hand and the Rhodesian forces on the other. “It is pleasing to note that the Zimbabwe Defence Forces has since its formation transformed into a formidable, loyal and disciplined force.
“The country should take this opportunity to pay tribute to members of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.

These are men and women who have dedicated their lives to safeguard the country’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity. The celebrations are also a statement of intent that members of the ZDF are ready to pay the supreme sacrifice in defence of the country,” he said. |

South African Federation of Trade Unions Blasts Ramaphosa For Being Too Friendly With Mnangagwa

SABC

Zwelithini Vavi

The South African Federation of Trade Unions (Saftu) has called on government to take a firm stance against Zimbabwe’s leaders, following recent allegations of human rights violations.

Zimbabwe’s ruling Zanu-PF party has received widespread criticism after videos and pictures, circulated on social media, showed state security agents abusing citizens.

At the weekend, South African envoys met with President Emmerson Mnangagwa at State House – without engaging the opposition MDC-Alliance.

Saftu General-Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi says South Africa needs to put pressure on the Zimbabwean government to make changes.

“Until the South African government stands firmly for the democratisation of that country, for the opening of the political space, the freedom of the media and ordinary people to lead a normal life and to organise themselves, we will go nowhere.”

He adds: “The SA government has been treating the regime with friendliness, but it is time for the President to pick up the phone and say to Mnangagwa – we will not allow your Ministers to come here and get treatment when you have destroyed your health system there, and when Zimbabweans are trapped in a situation where the hospitals have no doctors or nurses.”

Special envoys

Special envoys to Zimbabwe, Baleka Mbete and Syndey Mufamadi, were appointed by President Cyril Rampahosa last week after calls for South Africa to assess recent incidents of alleged human rights violations.

However, the Zimbabwean opposition party, the MDC Alliance, claims it has been snubbed by them.

Methodist Church Member Demands For The Church To Fire Mnangagwa

All Africa

A DISHEARTENED ordinary member of the Methodist Church has called upon the church’s leadership to revoke President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s membership from the religious grouping.

The church member, Cleopas Sanangura said Mnangagwa’s membership was not in good standing and if it is not withdrawn, he (Sanangura) will himself pull out of the church.

Sanangura also accuses the church of failing to protect weak and ordinary members of the fellowship adding that he no longer felt safe to be associated with Mnangagwa in the same church.

“I am writing this open email to you as a member of the Methodist Church. The reason for this letter is the situation in our country where the church has failed to protect the weak and the vulnerable,” reads part of Sanangura’s letter addressed to the Methodist Church leadership.

“We see the brutality happening in the country and the leader of this brutality is a member of the Methodist church in ED Mnangagwa.

“I have found it very difficult since he went into office why I should be associated with him in our church. I have family members that have since been killed by him but the church has remained silent about this.

“I see him and his wife wearing church uniform and I take it by association we are murderers as well. The President took oath to defend, protect the people and the Constitution of Zimbabwe yet he has become the enemy of the country.”

Sanangura continued; “Corruption is at its highest and people can’t afford a meal. I, therefore, would like to request that the church revoke his membership because he is not a member in good standing.

“The suffering of our people cannot be associated with the Methodist Church. If the church cannot do this, I, therefore, will withdraw my membership as I cannot be part of making the suffering of Zimbabweans.

“I have prayed about this and the only thing the church can do is to withdraw his membership to the church.”

It could not be established if the Methodist Church had responded to Sanangura’s request.

FULL TEXT: Oxford University Community Condemns Political Persecution In Zimbabwe

We call on the international community as a whole – governments, civil society and the people of the world – to stand in solidarity with the people of Zimbabwe and to speak out against the violations of human rights and suppression of democracy in Zimbabwe.

In 2019 and 2020, the ZDF carried out community programmes, which included the construction of classrooms blocks, teachers’ accommodation and also intervened in communities that were hit by the Cyclone Idai disaster.

Covid-19 Stats Update

Actives cases have increased to 3 170 while 20 new recoveries were recorded. The cumulative number of recorded cases is now 4 818 and COVID-19 deaths remain at 104.

Joe Biden Tackles The African-American Vote, Picks Kamala Harris As Running Mate

Reuters

Joe Biden and US senator Kamala Harris shake hands.

Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden on Tuesday tapped senator Kamala Harris as his choice for vice-president, making her the first black woman on a major party presidential ticket in US history and providing him with a partner well suited to go on the attack against Republican President Donald Trump.

With social unrest over racial injustice and police brutality against black Americans rocking the country for months, Biden had been under increasing pressure to select a woman of colour as his running mate. She is also the first Asian-American on a major presidential ticket.

Biden and Harris will make their first joint appearance as a presidential ticket on Wednesday in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware, the campaign said.

In Harris, a senator from California who made her own run for the White House before ending it and endorsing Biden, he gains a deeply experienced politician already battle-tested by the rigours of the 2020 presidential campaign as they head into the final stretch of the November 3 election.

“I have the great honour to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate,” Biden said on Twitter.

Harris, who became only the Senate’s second black woman in its history when she was elected in 2016, will be relied on to help drive the African-American vote — the Democratic Party’s most loyal constituency. Four years ago, the first dip in black voter turnout in 20 years contributed to Democrat Hillary Clinton’s upset loss to Trump.

Biden, whose foundering campaign was rescued by black voters in South Carolina’s primary in February, needs their strong support against Trump. It will be crucial in battleground states such as Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin that Trump won by the slimmest margins in 2016 but where opinion polls now show him trailing his Democratic rival.

The black vote is also central to Biden’s hopes of winning southern states Georgia and Florida that Trump carried four years ago but that opinion polls indicate will be competitive this year.

Biden served as vice-president for eight years under President Barack Obama, the first black US president.

Harris, 55, a former prosecutor and state attorney-general in California, is well known for her sometimes aggressive questioning style in the Senate, most notably of Brett Kavanaugh during his 2018 supreme court confirmation hearing.

As a presidential candidate, she also took Biden to task in a nationally televised debate over his past stances on mandatory busing for students as a means to desegregate schools. Some Biden advisers have said the attacks made them question whether she would be a trusted working partner because of her political ambitions.

While that exchange failed to boost her White House hopes, the Biden campaign will now look for her to train her prosecutorial fire on Trump and Vice-President Mike Pence. Harris is scheduled to debate Pence on October 7 in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Biden’s age, 78, has led to broad speculation he will serve only one term, making Harris a potential top contender for the nomination in 2024. Some of his allies were concerned that would make her a bad fit for the No 2 job and questioned her loyalty.

Biden publicly committed to choosing a woman as his running mate in a March debate and had considered other former presidential rivals such as senators Amy Klobuchar and Elizabeth Warren.

After the protests that erupted over the May 25 death in custody of George Floyd, a black man, at the hands of a white policeman in Minneapolis, Biden switched focus.

Harris will be confirmed as Biden’s running mate at the Democratic convention that begins on Monday, where Biden will also be formally nominated to challenge Trump.

Harris has become a key ally for Biden at a time when race has been thrust to the forefront of the campaign.

After Floyd’s death, she became a prominent voice in the push for racial justice and police reform, standing with marchers and sparring with Republicans in the US Senate over reform legislation.

Harris at times came under criticism from some in the black community and from progressive advocates for her record as California attorney-general where, they say, she did not do enough to investigate police shootings and too often sided with prosecutors in wrongful conviction cases.

Her defenders say she has always been reform-minded — and point to her record in the Senate, where she has championed a police-reform bill among other measures. Harris has said she became a prosecutor to bring a more progressive approach to the office.

The daughter of an Indian mother and a Jamaican father, Harris has knocked down barriers throughout her career. She was the first woman to serve as San Francisco’s district attorney, elected to that office in 2003, and the first woman to serve as California’s attorney-general, elected to that office in 2010.

Biden had also considered former Obama administration national security adviser Susan Rice, Atlanta mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms and representative Val Demings, a former police chief in Orlando, Florida. Biden also considered Asian-American senator Tammy Duckworth and New Mexico governor Michelle Lujan Grisham.

Historically, the vice-presidential nominee has been the one to take the lead in criticising the opposing ticket, though Trump has largely shredded that tradition. Brian Brokaw, a California political consultant who managed Harris’ campaigns for attorney-general and Senate, said Harris fits that role well.

“She is someone who can really make Republicans quake in their boots,” Brokaw said.

Ramaphosa To Decide On Next Move After Mnangagwa Kicked Out His Envoys

State Media

Mnangagwa with Ramaphosa

Envoys sent by African Union (AU) chairperson, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa to assess the political situation in Zimbabwe flew back to Pretoria yesterday where they are expected to report to their principal.

The three-member delegation returned a day after meeting President Mnangagwa where they were ordered back home without meeting with opposition parties, civil society and churches as was originally scheduled.

Former South African Minister of Safety and Security Dr Sydney Mufamadi was leading the team which comprised former Speaker of Parliament Baleka Mbete and former South Africa’s Minister of Public Service and Administration Advocate Ngoako Ramatlhodi.

In an interview yesterday, South African Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Mr Mphakama Mbete said the trio left for Pretoria to brief President Ramaphosa.

“They have just left. They are now going to brief their principal, His Excellency President Ramaphosa. This is after they met His Excellency President Mnangagwa in Harare on Monday,” said Mr Mbete.

He said it was up to President Ramaphosa to decide on the next course of action.

“The envoys were here at the instigation of their principal, who is President Ramaphosa. At the moment I cannot tell what is going to happen because it depends on President Ramaphosa who sent them here.

“It is him who will decide what course of action depending on what he would have been told, but they returned today after their meeting with President Mnangagwa,” said Mr Mbete.

The three came to Zimbabwe to assess the political situation in Zimbabwe after a sustained social media onslaught against the Harare administration.

Briefing journalists on Monday after meeting President Mnangagwa, Dr Mufamadi said they are in the country as envoys of the President of South Africa.

He said they had exchanged views with President Mnangagwa on the situation in the country.

“We exchanged views with his counterpart President Mnangagwa. In other words, we were listening to the state of the situation, what is being done or the intentions to do extra things and so on,” he said.

Dr Mufamadi said the outcome of the meeting will only be made public by President Ramaphosa after getting the views from all parties.

“We are not going to respond for our President through the media. We will be reporting to the President first, who will then interact with the public in due course,” said Dr Mufamadi.

Secretary for Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Mr Nick Mangwana last week said Zimbabwe has nothing to hide, as the so-called crisis was merely a creation of the nation’s detractors.

The three are coming to understand “the difficulties that Zimbabwe is facing”, following a wave of sustained attacks by opposition politicians, civic society activists and exiled G40 fugitives — Saviour Kasukuwere, Walter Mzembi, Jonathan Moyo and Patrick Zhuwao.

The anti-Zimbabwe crusade follows the flop of the protests that had been planned for July 31, which had been heavily-funded by Western embassies aimed at toppling President Mnangagwa and his Government.

Mr Mangwana said Zimbabwe and South Africa maintain cordial relations since they share a similar history of fighting and winning the war against ruthless colonial regimes.

Dep Comm-Gen Chihobvu is a liberation war veteran who joined the struggle in December 1977 and did a platoon commander’s course in Sarajevo in the former Yugoslavia.

He was attested into the Zimbabwe National Army at independence and held various positions and, participated in the Mozambique Campaign and in peacekeeping in Angola with Unavem III.

Dep Comm-Gen Chihobvu is also a holder of a Diploma in Combined Strategic Intelligence from the United States.

Facebook Announces Restrictions on Political Content

VOA

Facebook announced new regulations Tuesday that prevent U.S. publishers with demonstrated ties to political groups from running advertisements that look like news reports on the social networking site.

Facebook has been under pressure to manage disinformation appearing on its pages during the coronavirus pandemic and as the country prepares to vote for president in November.

The rules announced Tuesday permit publishers with political connections to register with the site, but they will be excluded from using Facebook’s “news” page for their messages.

“The news pages with these affiliations will not be eligible for inclusion in Facebook News,” the social media giant said.

Previously, such organizations were labeled “news exempt,” meaning that their content was not labeled as political.

Facebook defines a “political entity” as “an organization, company, or other group whose predominant purpose is to influence politics and elections,” such as political action groups and organizations designated as social welfare organizations by the Internal Revenue Service.

A “political person” includes candidates for public office, those whose positions are subject to legislative confirmation, such as Supreme Court justices and others, who possess the authority to enforce political power.

The Columbia Journalism Review published a report Tuesday outlining “new networks of shadowy, politically backed ‘local news websites,’” distributing domestic and internationally-sourced disinformation surrounding the U.S. election.

Several tech companies have cracked down on political exploitation of their platforms in recent weeks. Google recently told media company Axios it was planning to implement a similar ban in September, and Twitter temporarily suspended the account of the president’s son, Donald Trump, Jr., in July after he promoted the drug hydroxychloriquine as a treatment for coronavirus. Hydroxychloriquine’s efficacy in treating COVID-19 has been dismissed by medical experts after several clinical trials.

“We Take Pride In Our Defence Forces,” Mnangagwa’s Full Speech Showering Soldiers With Praises

President Emmerson Mnangagwa addressing the Defence Forces commemoration on line.

Members of Parliament; Members of Zimbabwe Defence Forces; Ladies and Gentlemen; Comrades and Friends;

It is my singular honour and privilege to address the nation on this special day which marks the 40th Anniversary of our Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF).

The attainment of independence in 1980 signalled the advent of majority rule and the formation of the Zimbabwe Defence Forces (ZDF). The bringing together of ZANLA, ZIPRA forces on one side and the Rhodesian Forces on the other was a daunting and challenging exercise.

I was privileged to chair the Joint Command for the integration of the three forces. Having fought for a united Zimbabwe, the formation of a unified defence force with a single purpose of defending our territorial integrity, sovereignty and independence was indeed gratifying accomplishment.

Today, we celebrate the numerous achievements scored over the last 40 years since the formation of the ZDF.

This occasion is happening on the backdrop of successive accomplishments by our Defence Forces to defend our motherland Zimbabwe from detractors, divisive elements and enemies.

The commemorations which we are holding this year under the theme, “ZDF: Celebrating 40 Years of Excellent Service to the People”, are taking place under yet another wave of aggression manifesting through illegal sanctions, hostile anti-Zimbabwe propaganda, mounted on social media platforms, and other forms of asymmetrical warfare meant to break the unity within our forces.

This has been coupled with the negative impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic.

EDITORIAL COMMENT : Responsibility must accompany free speech
Sadly, the virus has claimed some decorated members of the ZDF family in the name of Air Chief Marshal (Rtd) Perrance Shiri, who was a long time Commander of the Air Force of Zimbabwe and Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement and the ZDF Director of Public Relations, Colonel Overson Mugwisi, among others.

May their souls rest in eternal peace.

Fellow Zimbabweans;

In executing its constitutional mandate, the ZDF has since its formation acquitted itself with distinction and high professionalism and for this they deserve a big compliment. Zimbabwe has continued to enjoy peace largely attributable to the ZDF’s vigilance, loyalty, commitment and dedication to their constitutional obligation of defending the country and its people.

The resultant peace and tranquillity has provided a great stimulus for socio-economic development over the years.

Whilst maintaining peace in the country, the Zimbabwe Defence Forces continue to participate in regional and international peace keeping missions under the auspices of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), African Union (AU) and the United Nations (UN).

Our officers, men and women of the ZDF perform their duties with excellence and unparalleled dedication, as they contribute towards enhancing regional and continental integration.

In September 2019, the ZDF participated in the Ligwalagwala Air Show in Eswatini while preparations for participation in the Russian International Military Games and Special Forces Exercise CHOMELA to be held in the Republic of Botswana are at advanced stages. Their involvement in these international activities exposes our forces to the use of modern military equipment as well as strengthening ties between our forces and allies.

Additionally, memories of Cyclone Idai in 2019 bring to mind the Defence Forces’ significant role in search and rescue operations as well as provision of food and medical assistance to flood victims. They have also helped in restoring the damaged infrastructure such as roads, bridges, schools and clinics.

All these activities demonstrate the commitment of the Defence Forces to serve the nation and the close relationship that exists between them and the generality of the Zimbabwean population. This rich history of assisting communities is commendable and must continue to be the hallmark of our Defence Forces.

I commend the Zimbabwe Defence Forces for embracing my Government’s Vision of attaining an Upper Middle Income Economy by 2030.

In that regard, the ZDF engineers and artisans are engaged in various construction projects to precipitate development of our communities throughout the country.

Comrades and friends; the National Mine Clearance Unit of the Zimbabwe National Army Engineer Corps is also making significant progress in clearing anti-personnel landmines laid by the Rhodesian Regime during the liberation struggle. These include areas along the Sango Border Post to Crooks Corner Minefield. Government is committed to clearing all landmines across the country to give full meaning to independence, freedom and development for the affected communities.

Co-operating partners, Hazardous Life Support Organisation (HALO) Trust, Mines Advisory Group (MAG) and Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) are also progressing well in similar demining operations. Let me take this opportunity to express my Government’s sincere appreciation for the assistance we are getting from these organisations.

I am aware of the sacrificial nature and service ethos of the Defence Forces, however, my administration remains determined to improve the salaries and conditions of service for our forces. Housing, transport and medical facilities among other requirements are being improved in recognition of the role and sacrifices made by our Defence Forces in the conduct of their duties.

Mobility, requisite training equipment and Research and Development needs will be equally funded to ensure the modernisation and improvement of our national defence capabilities.

With regard to the War Veterans Affairs, my Government has resuscitated the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Bill which has now gone past the second reading stage in Parliament. The passing of the Veterans of the Liberation Struggle Bill into Law will repeal the War Veterans Act and the Ex-Political Prisoners, Detainees and Restrictees Act and take on board the previously excluded categories of the veterans. I am confident that upon its enactment, most of the welfare issues of veterans of the liberation struggle will be resolved.

Recognising the immense contribution made by veterans of our liberation struggle, I urge them to build on this rich legacy by taking full advantage of the empowerment opportunities availed in all sectors of the economy and the implementation of the devolution policy.

Fellow Zimbabweans; Our battle with Covid-19 pandemic requires discipline, bravery and unity which are embodied in the personalities we are celebrating today. We must be united and fight this invisible enemy together. It is our collective responsibility to protect our nation, our families and our beloved ones.

As responsible citizens, let us all co-operate with our security services, assisted by the ZDF as they enforce our national laws. We commend the ZDF for continuing to be a people’s army, a reputation it has built over the years.

In conclusion, I want to thank you all for joining the entire Zimbabwe Defence Forces family in commemorating this special day, the ZDF 40th Anniversary. Thank you, once again for remaining calm and peaceful in the wake of some misguided calls for violent protests and demonstrations by the opposition elements with support from foreign and civil society supporters and backers.

You have shown your patriotism and love for peace and tranquillity.

To the Zimbabwe Defence Forces, as a nation we take pride in you and we thank you for continuously defending our sovereignty and territorial integrity from all contemporary threats.

Happy 40th Anniversary!

God bless you all.

God bless Zimbabwe.

I thank you.

Zanu PF Makes A New Parliamentary Appointment

Priscilla Chigumba

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has gazetted the appointment of Esther Nyathi as Matabeleland South Proportional Representative Member of the House of Assembly after Zanu PF nominated her to replace Alice Ndlovu who died in December last year.

The announcement was made by ZEC chairperson Justice Priscilla Chigumba in a Government Gazette published last week.

“ZEC has gazetted the appointment of Esther Nyathi, the nominee put forward by ZANU PF, as a party list/proportional representation (women’s quota) member of the National Assembly. The appointment is in terms of section 39(7)(a) of the Electoral Act and with effect from the 31st July 2020,” reads the notice.

Justice Chigumba said Nyoni was a registered voter in Matabeleland South Province and fulfilled the requirement of the Electoral Act.

“It is hereby notified, in terms of section 39(7)(a) of the Electoral Act (Chapter 2:13), that Esther Nyathi a registered voter in Ward 11 of Insiza Rural District Council of Ntute Primary School, P.O Box 113, Filabusi, Insiza, Matabeleland South Province, who was nominated by Zimbabwe African National Union Patriotic Front (ZANU PF) party to fill the vacancy in the National Assembly Party list that occurred following the death of Alice Ndlovu, has been appointed as Party list member of the National Assembly, with effect from the date of publication of the notice.”

Ndlovu, who was elected as MP during the 2018 harmonised elections died in December last year after succumbing to kidney failure.

She was 63.

The appointment of Nyathi come as ZEC has also declared 15 seats in the National Assembly and Senate vacant after the MDC-T recalled some of its legislators.

In a gazetted notice recently, Justice Chigumba said ZEC had been formally notified by Parliament of the 15 vacancies.

Senators elected on the party lists and the extra women Members in the National Assembly elected by proportional representation are chosen by political parties in proportion to the votes received by their candidates in the constituency elections to the National Assembly.

If one of these seats falls vacant the original party nominates the successor.

Hopewell Chinono Back In Court Today For Fresh Bail Application

State Media

Hopewell Chinono being led back to prison after court.

Investigative Jornalist Hopewell Chinono is today expected to make a fresh bail application on changed circumstances on charges of inciting public to stage violent demonstrations on the July 31.

Chin’ono, through his lawyer Ms Beatrice Mtetwa, wanted to make the application last week but Harare regional magistrate Mr Ngoni Nduna ordered him to return to court today for his fresh bail bid.

The State led by Mr Michael Reza had indicated that it was ready to hear his application and respond on a later date.

The High Court threw out his appeal for bail after noting that the trial magistrate’s decision was properly arrived at when he initially dismissed his at the lower court.

In denying him bail Mr Nduna noted that he had shown some defiance in the face of the State which was calling for banning the protests.

Also Justice Tawanda Chitapi in his decision to deny Chin’ono bail said: “In disposing of the matter, I determine that the appellant (Chin’ono) has failed to demonstrate any misdirection of fact, law or both made by the learned magistrate in the court a quo (lower court) as would justify interference with his judgment.

“In consequence therefore, the order I make is as follows . . .The appeal be and it is hereby dismissed.”

Justice Chitapi said releasing Chin’ono might enable him to continue with his campaign as there was no condition discernible capable of restraining him if he granted bail.

“The attitude of the appellant was therefore one of defiance of State authority on the basis of a claim of right. In such circumstances the learned magistrate cannot be faulted in his reasoning,” said justice Chitapi.

New Heroes For Bulawayo

Busani Mthombeni

SOUTH Africa-based Highlanders member Nodumo Nyathi has been receiving rave reviews across the club’s social media platforms for spearheading Bosso’s debt clearance campaign that was launched in May.

Nyathi has been bestowed with living hero status for leading the drive that resulted in the club wiping its legacy debt that stood at $862 868 when the campaign started.

The initiative saw Nyathi and his team delivering the last payment of $410 000 to the club last Friday.

It was good news for Bosso family, as the debt clearance came just before Zimbabwe celebrated Heroes Day yesterday.

Nodumo Nyathi

Nyathi’s resilience after an initial attempt to raise funds for Highlanders failed in 2018 rightly earned him the hero status.

In September 2018, Nyathi launched a fundraising initiative aimed at raising about R30 million to clear the Highlanders debt but it failed.

However, in May this year, Nyathi, who is chairman of the Highlanders Supporters Association South African chapter, remodelled the campaign, which initially targeted at least 1 000 Bosso fans to contribute a once-off R500 payment to help the club clear its debt.

The 2018 campaign ran under the banner R30 challenge, targeting Bosso followers and sympathisers based in South Africa and abroad, who the supporters’ chapter believes to be more than one million.

Only 40 people contributed to the R30 challenge, raising R7 000.

Nyathi is happy that they have managed to help the club clear its debt with the contribution of less than 1 000 Highlanders fans.

“Having tried and failed in the first campaign, I looked at possible reasons why first the first attempt didn’t do well and I was convinced that it was not a failure, but just a learning curve. Convinced that Highlanders fans love the team and would like to play a part, I thought of remodelling the initiative,” said Nyathi.

“This time around the campaign was vigorous and there was a time I looked stupid to many people and some even told me straight in my face that I was nagging and boring them, but I never relented. When a few people supported the call, I immediately believed that this time the campaign would be a success and committed to doing everything for it to succeed,” he said.

Nyathi said it took a week to plan and strategise before launching the initiative after making some consultations.

He said besides the love Highlanders’ followers have for their club, team work, transparency and accountability made the campaign a success.

Every time someone made a contribution, organisers made it public by posting evidence on all social media platforms.

The exact number of people that contributed towards debt clearance will be announced once reconciliation has been completed.

The campaign had a slow take off, with $100 000 being raised in May and $300 000 in June.

Nyathi believes the campaign would have raised lots of funds had they opened mobile payment platforms.

“I believe if we had EcoCash, Telecash, One Wallet and Netcash platforms, we would have pushed more numbers in Zimbabwe. That’s the only thing I feel we could have done to raise more funds,” said Nyathi.

Contributions for the debt clearance were made to a South African back account and a BancABC account in Zimbabwe as well as online platforms.

The success of the campaign has left Nyathi pondering on what other project to embark on for Highlanders.

“Many possible projects have been discussed and are still to be discussed. We will pick quick wins first. What I’m certain of is that we will definitely embark on some projects, discussions are ongoing.

“I would like to thank everyone who has played a part in this campaign and would like to give special thanks to Busani Mthombeni, who I worked with to set up this project as we endured a number of sleepless nights before launching the campaign. I appreciate my wife and his wife for allowing us to do this as it really drained us. Special mention also goes to some ladies that played a pivotal role behind the scenes, mainly Mildred Maseko, Fiona Tshuma and Nokuthaba Nkala,” said Nyathi.

Musicians Bongani Mncube and Sebenzani Mehlokazulu were also roped in to drum support for the campaign.

Senior SA Government Official Admits There Is A Serious Political Crisis In Zimbabwe

 Emmerson Mnangagwa

New Prisons Boss Named

Prisons boss

Deputy Commissioner-General Moses Chihobvu has been promoted to Commissioner-General of the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS) with effect from 1 November.

Justice, Legal and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi yesterday confirmed the promotion by President Mnangagwa.

His promotion follows the retirement of Retired Major-General Paradzai Zimondi, who is now on pre-retirement leave, after 22 years at the helm.

Dep Comm-Gen Chihobvu has been Acting Commissioner-General since Rtd Maj-Gen Zimondi went on three months of pre-retirement leave and his promotion as substantive head of the service will take effect on November 1 after Comm-Gen Zimondi formally retires.

Dep Comm-Gen Chihobvu was seconded to ZPCS from the Zimbabwe National Army in 1999 and appointed personal staff officer to the commissioner of prisons.

He has risen through the senior ranks of the service and in his rise has served as Chief Staff Officer Security and Protocol, Assistant Commissioner Security and Protocol, Senior Assistant Commissioner Rehabilitation and Officer Commanding Manicaland Region, before becoming Deputy Commissioner-General with responsibility of correctional services.

“With the instruction from the President, I have since advised Deputy Commissioner-General Chihobvu on his new appointment,” said Minister Ziyambi.

He brings a wealth of experience to his position, a holder of a Master of Science in Strategic Management and a BSC (Hon) degree in Management and Entrepreneurial Studies among several other qualifications.

Police Impound 6000 Kombis For “Breaching” Lockdown Regulations

Kombis

Over 6 000 kombis and pirate taxis have been impounded countrywide for violating Covid-19 regulations, as police reiterated that inter-city travel remained banned unless the traveller has exceptional circumstances that allow exemption.

At the inception of the Covid-19 lockdown in March, Government suspended inter-city travel and banned all long-distance buses to minimise the spread of Covid-19.

Only commercial vehicles ferrying and distributing goods were permitted to travel from one city to another, and beyond borders.

National police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi on Friday warned anyone breaching the inter-city travel rules would be arrested and vehicles found transporting people would be impounded.

“People should take note that the country is still under national lockdown and as such, inter-city movements remain banned, he said. We reiterate that we don’t expect any unnecessary movements and that people should abide by the laws.

“People should put their safety and health first and should also assist in the maintenance of law and order.
“We also don’t expect any increase in the volumes of traffic on the roads.”

Recently, Government announced a curfew running from 6pm to 6am, during which time no movements are allowed except for essential service providers, as a way of containing the spread of Covid-19.

Asst Comm Nyathi said they received information that some pirate taxis and kombi owners were operating at night, putting themselves and passengers at risk.

Such operators risk being arrested, along with any members of the security teams that could be conniving with truckers and kombi operators in the ferrying of people illegally.

Covid-19 Inter-Ministerial Taskforce spokesperson Minister Monica Mutsvangwa recently called for behaviour change among Zimbabweans and reminded the nation that Covid-19 was real.

“People should not just wait to be seen by a police officer to wear a mask, she said.

People should not get into trucks where you know there is no social distance, no hygiene and when you actually know you should not be travelling.”-The Herald

Shock As Man Kills Friend Over R10 Debt

Knife

A GWANDA man has been arrested after he fatally stabbed his friend with an okapi knife in a dispute over a R10 debt.

Farai Moyo (28) of Spitzkop North Suburb was not asked to plead when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate, Ms Lerato Nyathi facing a murder charge. He was remanded in custody to August 21.

Prosecuting, Miss Ethel Mahachi said Moyo met the now deceased Moses Sibanda at Red Cross Business Centre in Gwanda when they had a misunderstanding over a R10 debt which the deceased owed him.

“On 26 February Farai Moyo and Moses Sibanda met at Red Cross Business Centre for a beer drink together with their peers. Moyo later confronted Sibanda and demanded back a R10 debt which he owed him.
Sibanda denied knowledge of the debt and insisted that he had given back Moyo his money which resulted in a misunderstanding.

“The two started fighting and Moyo drew an okapi knife and stabbed Sibanda twice on the stomach before fleeing the scene. Sibanda was rushed to the Gwanda Provincial Hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival,” he said.

Miss Mahachi said the matter was reported to the police who conducted investigations leading to Moyo’s arrest.-Chronicle

“Go To Harare And Meet Opposition” Ramaphosa Advised After Envoys Deported By Mnangagwa.

By Patrick Guramatunhu | “The decision by the Zimbabwean government to deny President Cyril Ramphosa’s envoys an opportunity to meet with opposition leaders was not only disrespectful to the office of the African Union Chairperson, which Ramaphosa currently holds, but seems to confirm that the voices of the opposition and civil society are being muzzled in Zimbabwe,” the report says.

“The Democratic Alliance (DA) now calls on President Ramaphosa, in his capacity as AU Chairperson, to show leadership and go to Harare and meet with all the relevant stakeholders and get a balanced picture of the political crisis unfolding in the country,” it continues.

ZRP Says Chiyangwa A Clean Man Who Was Cheated On By Kamambo for ZIFA Top Job.

THIRTY-TWO Zifa councillors accused of receiving bribes in the run-up to the 2018 Zifa national elections that ushered in Felton Kamambo’s administration are set to appear in court on August 25.

According to police sources, all but five of the 32 councillors were co-operating with police investigations and their statements were recorded.

The five hostile councillors are from Midlands province and refused to give recorded statements, but they’re still set to appear in court in what would be a historic criminal case in the history of Zimbabwean football.

The 32 are alleged to have received bribes from a candidate in the build-up to the polls that saw Kamambo shocking then incumbent Phillip Chiyangwa for the Zifa top post.

Kamambo got 35 votes to Chiyangwa’s 24, while another challenger Gift Banda beat Omega Sibanda by 37 to 22 votes for the association’s vice-presidency post.

Investigations later revealed that some councillors’ mobile money wallets were credited with various amounts totalling $8 110.

The official exchange rate then of the local currency and US dollar was 1:1. Police also interviewed the Zifa executive committee member accused of “bribing” the councillors and he reportedly confirmed sending the money, but said it was for “lunch” and other “incidentals”.

Those targeted received amounts ranging from $100 to $1 700, depending on how “influential” they were perceived to be.

A councillor from Matabeleland North, one from Bulawayo and others from Harare are reported to have been the biggest beneficiaries.

One of the 32 accused councillors Mehluli Thebe, a Zifa Southern Region executive committee member, confessed in June to receiving $300 from one Robert, who said it was from Kamambo.

Thebe, however, insisted that the money sent via EcoCash was never hush money, but reimbursement for his traveling expenses to and from Hwange as well as accommodation.

Thebe said there was no way he would have used his own money to travel to Bulawayo to listen to a candidate, so those that wanted his ear met all his expenses.

Thebe also argued that his vote was a secret and no one can conclusively say the $300 he received influenced his voting.

A police source yesterday told Chronicle Sport that the dockets were ready and they’re confident they have a strong case for some convictions.

“Trial date is August 25, all the papers are ready. We interviewed all, but five councillors in this case.

The five from the Midlands were not co-operating, but that’s not a big issue, they will have their day in court,” said the police source. –Chronicle/state media

Councillor Kurauone Bail Application Hearing Set For Today

Godfrey Kurauone

11-08-2020

Reports from Masvingo Remand Prison indicate that jailed MDC Alliance Youth Organizer Clr Godfrey Kurauone is in a very unstable health condition.

Our Organizer is being denied access to proper medication and healthy food in contravention of the Prisons Act.

Clr Kurauone was arrested by the police when he went to report as per his bail conditions.

He is part of the long list of individuals whom the police say are wanted for ‘interviews’ in connection with 31 July protests against looting and corruption.

Kurauone was denied bail at Masvingo Magistrates Courts and his bail hearing appeal is set for Wednesday at Masvingo High Court.

It is very clear that Kurauone is a target of persecution by the state because he refused to yield to Emmerson Mnangagwa’s call for command fasting and went on a campaign to feed the underprivileged.

Just like Ian Smith regime, ED’s government now uses detention as a tool to silence critics as we have witnessed in the case of Hopewell Chin’ono and Jacob Ngarivhume who are also languishing at Chikurubi Maximum Prison for speaking out against corruption.

We want to make it clear that we are not going to be cowed into submission but will continue to raise our voices against societal ills like corruption.

We shall never relent!

Mnangagwa Not Ready To Resolve National Crisis Through Dialogue

Ramaphosa’s Envoy Arrives In Harare City

Farai Dziva|The MDC Alliance has accused Emmerson Mnangagwa of deliberately scuttling talks involving his administration, envoys from South Africa and the opposition.

This, the MDC Alliance argues is a deliberate plan to stifle genuine dialogue.

See statement below:

STATEMENT ON CANCELLATION OF MEETING BY SPECIAL ENVOYS APPOINTED BY CYRIL RAMAPHOSA

The MDC Alliance was formally requested to be available for a meeting today(yesterday), the 10 of August 2020, with the special envoys that were deployed by President Cyril Ramaphosa to Zimbabwe.

A delegation remained on standby from 10am this morning only to be advised at the end of the day that the special envoys would be returning to South Africa without meeting the MDC Alliance delegation in order to brief President Ramaphosa on the outcomes of their meeting with Mr Mnangagwa.

We can only assume that the failure to meet the MDC Alliance delegation was as a result of demands made by the Zanu PF delegation.

We reiterate that Zimbabwe is in a state of crisis that has been characterized by a de facto gate of emergency a crackdown on citizens, abductions arbitrary arrests of government critics and the political persecution of journalists. The Govemment in Harare is incapable of resolving these challenges because it lacks legitimacy.

We are of the firm view that any solution to the ongoing socio-economic challenges lies in resolving the political crisis and answering the outstanding legitimacy question.

It is clear that Mr Mnanangagwa is not ready to resolve the national crisis through genuine dialogue.

However, the deteriorating plight of the Zimbabwean people means that a political settlement is more urgent than before.

We will continue to mount pressure on Mnangagwa to engage in sincere dialogue untill national crisis is resolved.

MDC Alliance Message To Zimbabwe Defence Forces

Farai Dziva|The country’s main opposition party MDC Alliance has implored the Zimbabwe Defence Forces to protect the citizens of the country instead of being used used by politicians to suppress the will of the people.

See the MDC Alliance’s Defence Forces Day statement below:

Today, the MDC Alliance joins the nation in commemorating our Defence Forces.

It is 40 years since the Zimbabwe Defence Forces came into being through the integration of the ZIPRA and ZANLA liberation armies and the Rhodesian colonial forces in 1980.

This year’s commemoration of four decades of service presents an opportunity to reflect on the history and direction of our Defence Forces.

There would be no independent Zimbabwe were it not for ZIPRA and ZANLA, whose liberation war feats helped force the uncooperative colonial Rhodesian government to the 1979 Independence talks at Lancaster House.

We owe a great debt to the two liberation armies.
The constitutionally defined roles of the Defence Forces are to protect Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, to partake in the design of shared regional security architecture, to play a role in the preservation of international stability and peace, and to offer military assistance to civil authority in times of need.

Our Defence Forces have distinguished themselves in many of their constitutionally defined roles.

For 40 years they have safeguarded Zimbabwe’s independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Our Defence Forces have played an active part in SADC’s security architecture. We take pride in their sterling performances in various peacekeeping missions in Africa and in the role they continue to play in aiding civil authority to save lives, deliver humanitarian aid and spearhead emergency reconstruction as they did in 2019 in the wake of Cyclone Idai.

However, the Defence Forces’ 40 years of existence have not been unblemished.

We note with particular sadness the politicisation of the Defence Forces for domestic repression and the continued militarisation of the civic space.

On this day of commemoration, we call on the Defence Forces to remember their constitutional mandate to the people of Zimbabwe.
We ask that they act in a manner that better serves the interests of all Zimbabweans, by fully complying with their constitutional obligation to respect the lives and dignity of the people in the execution of their duties.

In the new Zimbabwe, weapons and arms of war will never be deployed to support a political party’s partisan interests or impede the people’s right to demonstrate peacefully but instead support collective national interests taking due cognisance of the fundamental rights and diversity of the citizenry.

Perhaps, the most significant commemoration we can give to our Defence Forces on this day is to collectively call for the improvement of the conditions of service for rank and file soldiers as well as plead with each and every member of the Defence Forces to remember that the people of Zimbabwe are not their enemies, instead, we ask that they work to protect.
Happy Defence Forces’ Day.

All Eyes On Mnangagwa As 30 ZBC Employees Test Positive COVID-19.

All eyes are on ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa after thirty employees at the Zimbabwe Broadcasting Authority (ZBC) tested positive for Covid-19.

ZBC employees usually frequent Mnangagwa’s offices for broadcasting services.

The COVID-19 is an infectious disease similar to the cold and travels in droplets when one coughs or sneezes. It also travels in other body fluids. Not only people who are infected with coronavirus are the carriers; Asymptomatic carriers don’t have any symptoms but pass on COVID-19.

The development follows last month’s incident where the public broadcaster had to suspend normal programming after one employee tested positive for the killer virus.

ZBC confirmed the latest development yesterday through a statement posted on microblogging site Twitter.

“The ZBC wishes to advise that 30 members of staff have tested positive for Covid-19. All 30 are currently isolating at home. The corporation continues to follow Government and World Health Organisation (WHO) guidelines with periodic testing, premises disinfection and personal protective equipment provision,” tweeted the public broadcaster.

Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Permanent Secretary Mr Nick Mangwana, wished the infected staff a speedy recovery, while asserting that the media sector is part of the frontline workers.

He said five of the employees had mild symptoms while the rest were asymptomatic.

“We wish all ZBC staff members who tested positive a quick recovery. We are comforted in that of the 30 who are positive, only five are showing mild symptoms and the rest are asymptomatic. We have always said media staff are frontline workers. These results attest to that,” he said.

Frontline workers are among the worst affected by Covid-19 largely due to the nature of their jobs that puts them at high risk of contracting the virus.

Young Journalists Association (Yoja) last month lobbied the Government to minimise Press conferences among other face to face gatherings as they could increase the risk of journalists contracting Covid-19.

The association also encouraged media houses to equip journalists with tools to enable them to work from home.

The workplace continues to be one of the country’s Covid-19 hotspots as cases continue to rise.

On Monday the country had recorded 4 748 Covid-19 positive cases including 1 524 recoveries and 104 deaths.

Organisations such as Cimas, United Refineries, Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra), Commercial Bank of Zimbabwe (CBZ) have had to temporarily shut down their premises after employees tested positive for Covid-19 to allow for disinfection of the affected areas. -Chronicle/state media
