Komichi Confirms “Spying” On Chamisa

By A Correspondent- The chairperson of the Thokozani Khupe led Movement for Democratic Change Tsvangirai (MDC-T), Morgen Komichi has said that he has been spying on MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.

He made the remarks during a Press conference in Harare on Friday during which he said he never believed in Chamisa’s leadership qualities even when he campaigned for him during the 2018 elections. He said:

I was never part of them, even if you ask our secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora, I used to pull him by the side telling him that he should relax and wait because the time for Chamisa would come to an end sooner.

Mwonzora concurred with Komichi saying:

Yes, I can confirm that he never believed that the leadership of Nelson Chamisa would last, he used to tell me to relax.

Ironically, Komichi is one of the MDC officials that appeared on a number of rallies and platforms defending Chamisa’s alleged power grab and openly and strongly attacked Khupe.

Komichi also said that he also secretly authorised an organisation called ‘Defending Morgan Tsvangirai’s Legacy,’ which issued statements attacking Chamisa’s leadership.

“I Am Not Obediah Moyo’s Lawyer”: Thabani Moyo Clears Air

By A Correspondent- Advocate Thabani Mpofu of the “fulcrum” and “the pith” fame has denied allegations saying that he is representing the Minister of Health and Child Care, Dr Obadiah Moyo who has been implicated in the abuse of COVID-19 response funds.

Mpofu posted on Twitter last night in response to a message making rounds on social media which suggests that “the firebrand lawyer” was going to Rhodesville Police Station “to get hold of what is currently taking place regarding my client.”

Posting on Twitter, Mpofu who is the lawyer of opposition MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa said:

Well, it is not true that I’m representing Obadiah Moyo. Khululeka Zimbabwe. I don’t even know who his lawyers are. He is, however, entitled to legal representation by lawyers of his choice of whom I AM NOT one. Handisi gweta rake. [I am not his lawyer].

The reports are made when some are castigating lawyers who are also officials in the opposition MDC for representing corruption accused ZANU PF officials.

Chivhayo Ready To Resume Work On Gwanda Solar Project

By A Correspondent- Businessman Wicknell Chivayo’s Intratrek says it is awaiting the finalisation of the financial closure phase of the 100 megawatt Gwanda solar project by the Zimbabwe Power Company (ZPC) to resume its work following a tumultuous court battle with the parent company.

The project stalled after ZPC approached the courts seeking to terminate the contract for the project over alleged contractual breaches by Intratrek.

Intratrek board chairman, lawyer Wilson Manase, in an interview this week, said the financial closure phase of the deal was now the only drawback for the project.

“As Intratrek, we have submitted our documents to the employer, which is ZPC. We are hoping that since everything is in order from our end, the conclusion of the financial closure side of things will not take that much time.

Chivayo won the tender in 2015 to build a solar power plant in Gwanda, expected to feed 100 megawatts into the national grid, but the company missed the deadline due to protracted disagreements with government.

The matter spilled to the courts after Chivayo failed to honour the US$5 million solar project, but High Court judge Justice Tawanda Chitapi acquitted the controversial businessman, claiming the matter should be settled at the Civil Court.

But the Supreme Court overturned Justice Chitapi’s ruling, ordering Intratrek and Chivayo to face trial after an appeal by Prosecutor-General Kumbirai Hodzi.

The Supreme Court order came after Energy minister Fortune Chasi had written to Zesa Holdings executive chairman Sydney Gata directing the power utility to urgently work out an out-of-court settlement with Intratrek Zimbabwe to allow the project to proceed.

Chasi has in the last few weeks been busy at work trying to get the warring parties to the negotiating table. Chasi argues court battles would not save the situation but delay completion of the project.

Manase said: “We want to reiterate that according to our plans, we would be able to add our first 10 megawatts of energy onto the grid in six months as directed by the minister. Yes, we have had ups and downs on this project.

“These, to us, are a thing of the past. Our focus is now on ensuring that the project gets off the ground as planned and that we meet the six-month target set for us. We do not want to plan on saying what if we fail because we have aimed for success of this project.”

Manase added that Intratrek was hoping that the other partners which have joined hands on the project would also help them see the deal to its finality.

“We have the African Transmission Corporation Holdings (ATC) as the financiers of the project.

Just recently, we did witness the arrival of Dube, Manikai, and Hwacha (DMH), a respected law firm that is coming through as the legal adviser on the project and a host of other renowned players.

“This is to show that we are indeed serious with the project. We still have CHINT Electrical — a giant Chinese solar energy company in the mix and we are sure that we will deliver, as I stated earlier, on the project,” Manase added.

Oliver Magwenzi, the Gwanda solar power project managing director said there had been considerable ground that had been covered in laying the foundation and setting up the site for the commencement of the project.

Nurses In Soup Over Protests

By A Correspondent- The Zimbabwe Republic Police on Friday arrested nurses and general workers at Victoria Chitepo in Mutare for a protest over paltry salaries.

The development comes after health caregivers across the country have embarked on an industrial action to register displeasure over the government’s proposed 50 percent salary increment.

The protest started at Parirenyatwa Hospital and has since spread to other public health institutions with reports suggesting that the majority of health workers did not show up for work at Parirenyatwa and Sally Mugabe
Hospitals in the capital on Friday.

The arrests were confirmed by an anonymous administrator at Victoria Chitepo Hospital and other nurses while speaking to the NewDay.

The administrator said:
Yes, our nurses and some general staff were arrested for taking part in the strike. They were detained at Mutare Central Police Station.

They were released without charge after the hospital’s management negotiated for their release.

The report was also confirmed by a nurse at the hospital who expressed disbelief in the development saying all health caregivers nationwide had embarked on industrial action.

Our Ministers Do Not Learn, Mliswa Speaks On Obadiah Moyo’s Arrest

By Jane Mlambo| Norton legislator Temba Mliswa has urged ministers to follow the law and not be swayed into shady deals by compulsion of being close to power.

Mliswa said ministers should learn the importance of doing things in black and white as public officials.

He posted this on Twitter in reference to the arrest of health and child care minister Obadiah Moyo.

“The case of Dr Obadiah Moyo shows that our Ministers do not learn. In that position it’s important that one do things in black and white. Just follow the law and not be swerved into shady deals by the compulsion of being close to power. It will come back to haunt you,” said Mliswa.

Moyo is set to appear in court today on charges of corruption over his role in what has come to be known as the Covid-gate.

Komichi Confirms Long Term Plot To Bring Down Chamisa

THE Thokozani Khupe-led MDC-T party chairman Morgen Komichi yesterday unwittingly exposed that he was a spy who worked to destabilise and undermine MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa.

Addressing a Press conference in Harare yesterday, Komichi said while he played an important role in jettisoning Chamisa into presidency of the party and presidential candidate in the 2018 elections, he never believed in his leadership qualities.

“I was never part of them, even if you ask our secretary-general Douglas Mwonzora, I used to pull him (Mwonzora) by the side telling him that he should relax and wait because the time for Chamisa would come to an end sooner,” he said.

Mwonzora confirmed that while Komichi appeared on a number of rallies and platforms defending Chamisa’s alleged power grab and vehemently attacking Thokozani Khupe, he never believed in the youthful opposition leader.

“Yes, I can confirm that he never believed that the leadership of Nelson Chamisa would last, he used to tell me to relax,” Mwonzora said.

Komichi said he also secretly authorised an obscure organisation called Defending Morgan Tsvangirai’s Legacy, which issued statements attacking Chamisa’s leadership.

As he secretly supported forces opposed to Chamisa, Komichi branded the loyalty card which was at the centre of his campaign for the vice presidency at the Gweru congress where he lost to Tendai Biti and Welshman Ncube.

Komichi, according to MDC-T insiders, is also gunning for the MDC-T presidency which Khupe and Mwonzora were also interested.

MDC Alliance secretary-general Chalton Hwende said the statements by Komichi confirmed that the outfit was just a power-shopping movement.

“Someone who can honestly say in public, I was a spy, supporting a presidential candidate and participated in a congress that I was secretly working against, who can trust such characters?” Hwende asked.

Komichi acted as Chamisa’s chief elections agent and rushed to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission’s podium to declare that the results that gave President Emmerson Mnangagwa a lead in the 2018 general elections were fake.

After ending his romance with the MDC Alliance in March following a Supreme Court order declaring Chamisa an illegitimate leader, Komichi made a volte-face and claimed that youthful leader did not win the controversial presidential poll.

But Chamisa yesterday said Komichi imposed himself on his election team.

“The chief elections agent was Jameson Timba. Komichi went there saying he was interested in knowing what was happening, but he was not an official of my team,” Chamisa said.

Mashakada Says Dr Magombeyi Was Never Abducted, He Was Hidden Inside US Embassy | IS HE TELLING THE TRUTH?

Tapiwa Mashakada

Despite clear evidence proving a kidnapping, the latest betrayer of the MDC Alliance, Dr Tapiwa Mashakada, has narrated shocking claims concerning the abduction of former leader of a union of medical doctors, Dr Peter Magombeyi, which he said was fake and stage managed to tarnish the image of Zimbabwe for Nelson Chamisa’s relevance.

Magombeyi went missing on September 14 last year, leading to a doctors’ strike that incapacitated public hospitals and saw the unnecessary deaths of many patients.

ZimEye has vivid video based evidence of the abduction and how military elements combined with Zimbabwe Republic Police officers played a role. The evidence includes interviews with the police boss Gen Godwin Matanga.

ZimEye had also performed network-packet tracing operations exposing the state denials. Mashakada however, has a different story. He says:

“During the alleged abduction period of the ZHDA leader Dr Peter Magombeyi, the Board members Douglas Coltart and Arnold Tsunga organized accommodation for him at the US Embassy Westgate where he stayed for 5 days.”

He continues:

“An instruction was given from the party to make noise about this on social media and to tag all foreign adversaries.

“Magombeyi left the embassy on September 19 with his cell phone well charged and a team from the embassy drove him and left him at Nyabira where he started calling his friends.

“After some medical examinations, it was proved that Magombeyi was fit and was never tortured. He got a reward from the Americans who sponsored his luxurious vacation in an expensive hotel in South Africa.

“This was a well calculated move which took place when the UN General Assembly was coming and when a high-ranking delegation was visiting Zimbabwe to assess the human rights situation.

“Dr Magombeyi was not a threat to government to warrant abduction by State agents and what would the government gain by abducting the medical doctor at such a time when they were trying to clean up their own image?

“The MDC Alliance was only trying to push the narrative that there were gross human rights abuses in Zimbabwe and to call for more sanctions.”

“This Magombeyi case is a ruse, everything we stage managed. I left the MDC Alliance because these people are after money and tarnishing the image of the government for nothing and for this they are doing all sorts of nasty things.

“The movement has been captured and highjacked by some external forces and no longer serving the purpose,” Dr Mashakada concluded. – via Byo24

Byo Residents Oppose Council Move To Lease Land To Mayor For A Song

By Jane Mlambo| Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association (BPRA) has submitted its opposition to the plans by their municipality to lease out 3.5 hectares of land to Mayor Solomon Mguni for a monthly rental of ZWL$165.00 per month.

In its letter to Bulawayo Town Clerk, the residents group accused the Mayor of abusing his privilege and access to information to grant himself land.

They accused their local authority of using outdated bylaws to benefit themselves at the expense of landless residents.

Below is part of the letter…

Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association would like to submit its objection to the proposal by Bulawayo City Council to lease Lot 3 of Lot 3 Lower Rangemore in extent approximately 3.5 hectares to His Worship Mayor Councillor Solomon Mguni for urban agricultural activities at a monthly rental of ZWL$165 for 25years. This offer was made in line with Council resolution from subcommittee on allocation of stands and premises for development held on the 4th of March 2020.

It is the submission of BPRA that the Mayor used his privileged access of information to make an application for the said property which initially belonged to one P. Phakathi who was later dispossessed of the stand by BCC after failing to develop it. The Mayor being privy to this information then used his influence to get the committee on allocation of stands and premises for development to grant him the land for a song.

BPRA is further concerned by the continued reliance on outdated bylaws by Bulawayo City Council. These outdated bylaws that have not been reviewed for decades continue to be the sole basis and partial justification for corruption gains and deals. As such it is the submission of BPRA that while the process might have satisfied both legal and institutional provisions, such unsound laws cannot guarantee just outcomes.

It is a neutral of public trust for the Mayor to be given such a huge portion of land at a time when the majority of the residents that the Mayor represents are landless and have been victims of social injustice for many years. This act is a subset of injustice and a violation of the obligations of fairness for private gain and a betrayal of public trust.

ZACC Confirms Obadiah Moyo’s Arrest

By Own Correspondent| The Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) has confirmed the arrest of Health Minister, Obadiah Moyo on corruption charges, with the former Chitungwiza hospital Chief Executive Officer set to appear in court today.

They did not speak concerning the man’s sudden release soon after arriving at the police station yesterday.

In a statement on the Twitter website, ZACC said,

“ZACC confirms the arrest of the Minister of Health and Child Care Obediah Moyo on allegations of criminal abuse of duty related to the procurement of COVID 19 drugs. He is going to appear in court today. As ZACC we continue to say REFUSE, RESIST AND REPORT CORRUPTION,” the anti-graft body said.

Moyo is involved in a controversial deal that saw a shadowy company Drax International being awarded huge government contracts worthy over US60 million dollars.

The dubious company owned by Delish Nguwaya inflated prices of N95 face masks which were supplied at a whopping US$28 against a local price of US$2.

Zimbabweans applying for special dispensation permits in South Africa

The High Court in Pretoria has ruled in favour of special permits holders, refugees and asylum seekers in South Africa receiving the Covid-19 unemployment grant.

The ruling by the High Court opens doors for hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans legally documented to stay in South Africa.

The court found that directives issued by Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu was unconstitutional and unlawful, and that the exclusion of certain groups from accessing the R350 grant should be stopped.

The minister has been given five days to quantify the costs of extending the grant and another five days to publish amended regulations.

The groups that will be included under the COVID-19 unemployment grant are asylum seekers and special permit holders from Lesotho, Angola and Zimbabwe.

MSU Student Drags University Staffer To Court

A Midlands State University (MSU) staffer has been taken to court by his ex-lover who is also a student at the same institution demanding an increase in maintenance to cater for his child with special needs.

Hope Dzapasi who was demanding that maintenance be reviewed from $600 to $2 130 per month, told Bulawayo magistrate Nomsa Ncube that the $600 that Tafara Mukute who is a deputy director at the institution’s IT Department was contributing towards the upkeep of their minor child who has special needs was insufficient following countrywide price increases.

“I want an upward variation from $600 to $2 130. The child has special needs and the above money that the respondent has been providing is not enough to cater for those needs due to the cost of living which has gone up. Hospital bills and groceries have gone up and the money is not enough to take care of the child,” she said.

To corroborate her claims, Dzapasi produced a quotation of the expenses showing that the amount which her ex-lover was contributing towards the upkeep of the child was not enough.

In response Mukute who claimed he was being paid $15 000 per month turned down Dzapasi’s claim saying it “was too high”.

He offered to pay $1 000 as monthly maintenance saying he was also looking after his pregnant wife and mother.

“It is too high since I also have a pregnant wife and mother I am taking care of,” he said.

Dzapasi, however, declined the offer arguing that it was too little to cover the needs of their child.

In her ruling the magistrate ordered Mukute to pay $2 000 as monthly upkeep for his child with effect from the end of this month.

Market Rejects Bond Notes, ZWL$2 Bill

As the Zimbabwe economy continues on a freefall, the informal market has begun rejecting all bond notes and the ZWL$2 bill in favour of the new ZWL$5, ZWL$10 and ZWL$20 denominations.

The informal market controls over 70 percent of the economy and is a major determinant in the direction of the economy.

At Mbare musika, vendors are now rejecting even the new ZWL$2 notes, it’s just going in cycle because once its rejected here, the next person will not accept it because maybe they may want to buy in Mbare,” said one Harare resident, Tedious Magombedze.

Another Harare resident Tecla Sithole who is also a vendor said she failed to buy her stuff after bringing a bunch of $2 notes as they were rejected at most of the vending stalls.

She added that she will find it difficult to accept it from her customers.

Yesterday, the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe announced that all local currency notes are still legal tender which should be accepted by the market.

It remains to be seen if the market will heed the RBZ call to accept the smaller Denominations.

Byo Strange Diarrhoea Death Toll Hits 9 As Govt Orders For Covid-19 Tests On All The Patients

Bulawayo Mayor councillor Solomon Madlala Mguni

THE diarrhoea outbreak death toll in Bulawayo’s Luveve suburb has increased to nine and the city’s health services department has treated nearly 1 000 patients since it launched the door-to-door treatment on Monday.

The Government has since ordered that all those treated for running tummies should also be tested for Covid-19.

Luveve suburb has been experiencing diarrhoea cases for nearly two weeks which residents blame on municipal water.

The local authority in partnership with private laboratories in the city is conducting tests to establish the source of the outbreak.

Results for the tests are expected to be released soon.

Health experts have blamed the deaths on delays by residents to seek treatment.

Severe diarrhoea can lead to kidney failure.

The city council is offering free treatment to diarrhoea patients following the outbreak.

Bulawayo City Council and Government authorities tour gardens in Luveve suburb yesterday suspected to be the source of diarrhoea outbreak in the suburb.

On Monday, council launched a door-to-door treatment of diarrhoea patients and those in critical condition were being referred to Mpilo Central Hospital and were exempt from paying ambulance fees.

Luveve suburb has also been exempted from the 144-hour weekly water shedding being enforced in other suburbs to conserve the fast dwindling water supplies.

The Minister of Local Government and Public Works Cde July Moyo yesterday visited the city to get first-hand information on the outbreak.

Minister Moyo who was accompanied by Bulawayo Provincial Affairs Minister Judith Ncube, Bulawayo Mayor Councillor Solomon Mguni and Town Clerk Mr Christopher Dube visited Luveve suburb.

The delegation visited Luveve Clinic where most patients are being treated before touring sewer contaminated wells dug by residents to water vegetables.

The news crew observed scores of residents receiving treatment at the clinic while some residents were busy watering their vegetables with water from wells contaminated with raw sewer.

After the tour, Minister Moyo had a long closed-door meeting with council officials among other provincial leaders to discuss the diarrhoea outbreak.

One of the resolutions from the meeting was that residents affected by the diarrhoea outbreak should be tested for Covid-19.

Covid-19 can be fatal to patients with underlying illnesses.

Minister Moyo said Government resolved that diarrhoea patients should be tested for Covid-19 as a precautionary measure.

“We also said the city and the Provincial Medical Director (PMD) should test and find out if it is Covid-19 related. We have also asked council to provide the results of the water tests as soon as possible to guide the way forward,” said Minister Moyo.

He said he had been informed that the death toll had risen to nine and that nearly 1 000 people have been treated for diarrhoea.

“The City Health Department is on top of the situation. They have treated now close to 1 000 suffering from diarrhoea. The death toll is now nine and it seems most of those dying are young people which is very worrying,” said Minister Moyo.

He said while the city was conducting water tests, independent opinion has to be sought to give credence to measures being taken to address the outbreak. The National University of Science and Technology Nust and Cimas have been contracted to conduct further tests on the diarrhoea cases.

Minister Moyo said residents need to be educated on the dangers of watering their gardens with sewer contaminated water.

“We have to educate residents on the dangers of using this water contaminated with raw sewer to water vegetables,” he said.

Minister Ncube will lead the awareness programme to educate residents against using sewer contaminated water for watering their vegetables.

ZEC Says An Act Of God Stopping By Elections From Going Ahead

State Media

ZEC chief election officer Mr Utloile Silaigwana

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) this week said all pending by-elections will only proceed after it has finished working on a draft Covid-19 electoral practice policy that will guide electoral staff, the electorate and other stakeholders on how to conduct themselves before, during and after electoral processes to avoid contracting the lethal disease.

In a statement, ZEC chief election officer Mr Utloile Silaigwana said the current suspension of by-elections was guided by Government directive to curb the spread of the disease which has wreaked havoc across nations the world over.

“The suspension of by-elections and other electoral activities was done in compliance with the executive Presidential Powers invoked as a result of the global pandemic recognised by the law as an act of God. It therefore follows that the by-elections were suspended in terms of the Covid-19 regulations and not in terms of the Electoral Act and its stipulated time frames as some of the sections of society would like to believe,” he said.

“It should be noted that by-elections were suspended not postponed which means they will be conducted when the restrictions have been relaxed to allow such activities to resume without posing danger to the health of those involved,” said Mr Silaigwana.

Obadiah Moyo Now At Rotten Row Court

Obadiah Moyo

Health and Child Care Minister Obadiah Moyo who was arrested yesterday by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) over his alleged involvement in NatPharm’s unprocedural contract with Drax International LLC to supply medicines and surgical sundries is now at the Harare Magistrates Court.

According to ZimLive, Moyo arrived in his own personal vehicles with his aides a d is believed to have slept at his house.

His arrest followed the arrest of three NatPharm bosses this week on charges of criminal abuse of office for approving the deal with Drax, now known as Drax Consult SAGL after a name change, without following laid down procurement procedures.

Drax representative Delish Nguwaya has since been charged in court over the deal, which has already been cancelled on the orders of the Ministry of Finance and Economic Development.

Zacc spokesperson Commissioner John Makamure confirmed the arrest of Dr Moyo but did not give details of the allegations he was facing. “I can confirm the arrest of Minister Moyo. He will be detained at Rhodesville police station and he is most likely going to appear in court today,” said Comm Makamure.

Sources close to investigations said Dr Moyo was invited to Zacc headquarters on Wednesday to record statements before he was released to allow investigators to study the documents further, investigations that led to yesterday’s arrest.

Comm Makamure said ZACC was looking at procurement systems and procedures of supply of medicines and equipment to fight Covid-19 to establish compliance with laid down procedures.

“We are looking at the whole procurement system for Covid-19 to establish systems compliance in handling and managing both procurements and donations. We have two processes: the investigation arm and another comprising our officers carrying out a review of the whole procurement system to ensure compliance. This is being done with a view to making recommendations on how it can be improved,” said Comm Makamure.

“Where a crime is suspected to have been committed, our investigation arm will come in. We have officers looking at the whole procurement processes in an emergency such as Covid-19.”

The arrest of Dr Moyo followed the charges against Natpharm bosses, managing director Florah Nancy Sifeku (67), operations manager Charles Mwaramba (78) and finance manager Rolland Mlalazi (55) who appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts.

They were not asked to plead to the charges of criminal abuse of office when they separately appeared before magistrate Ms Vongai Guriro, who remanded them all to July 3 on $10 000 bail each.

Sifeku and Mwaramba are jointly charged on one of the offences where the State alleges that they disregarded a directive from the Health and Child Care Permanent Secretary to go for tender but instead fast-tracked an order to Drax to supply medicines and surgical sundries, on the grounds that there was extreme emergency.

DRAX had written a letter of interest to supply Zimbabwe with medicine and surgical sundries under a US$20 million facility.

The two allegedly withheld the tender documents for a month, while they were processing another order for the same company under the loan facility. They are alleged to have used the tender and order to award and sign a contract for Drax.

Drax is said to have put up US$2,7 million of which US$2 million out of the total amount was for performance guarantee after it failed to secure one from European banks. After realising that Drax had failed to supply the medicine and sundries within three months as agreed in the contract, Sifeku and Mwaramba allegedly deliberately failed to cancel the contract for non-performance.

On a second matter in which Sifeku and Mlalazi are jointly charged, the State alleges that early this year, Health Minister Moyo was approached by Delish Nguwaya and lawyer Dedja, who introduced themselves to him as Drax’s country representative and legal representativ.

Nguwaya and Dedja are said to have tendered an expression of interest, saying their company had the capacity to supply medicines to Zimbabwe through a US$40 million loan facility.

Minister Moyo is said to have asked the then permanent secretary Dr Agnes Mahomva to process the offer. But Dr Mahomva advised Sifeku and Mlalazi to procure the medicines according to the proper procurement procedures.

The State alleges that knowing that Drax International LLC had changed its name to Drax Consult SAGL, and knowing that it was previously known as Papi Pharma and had failed the vetting process, Sifeku and Mlalazi went on to offer it another order to supply US$13 351 071 worth of medicines.

On April 9, 2020, Finance and Economic Dvelpment Permanent Secretary Mr George Guvamatanga wrote to Dr Mahomva after noting that Sifeku and Mlalazi had entered into an agreement with Drax. Dr Mahomva, on the following day, said the ministry had not given NatPharm the green light to sign the contract.

16 More Covid-19 Cases Confirmed As National Tally Nears 500

State Media

SIXTEEN new Covid-19 cases were confirmed yesterday, with 11 of these being patients infected within Zimbabwe, although all by contact from known people previously infected.

The other five were all returnees from South Africa.

In the latest statistics the Ministry of Health and Child Care said there were 213 rapid screening tests and 302 diagnostic PCR tests done yesterday.

There are now 479 confirmed cases, 63 confirmed recoveries and four deaths in the cumulative totals.

Globally there are now 456 726 deaths from 8 546 919 confirmed cases, although the number of cases is probably significantly higher since not all countries, especially those that have been severely hit, test all sick people or all people likely to be infected, reserving their test capacity for the vulnerable groups.

South Africa remains the epicentre of the Southern African area, with 83 890 confirmed cases, overtaking China in the last 24 hours, but with 1 737 deaths, a little over a third of those seen in China.

RBZ To Withdraw Special Subsidies On Fuel, Price Expected To Shoot Up

Zimbabwe’s central bank plans to stop providing the foreign currency needed for fuel imports, handing the responsibility to private companies, people familiar with the situation said.

The plan, which will end an effective subsidy, will take place as early as June 23 when a currency peg is removed and an auction system for foreign exchange is set to begin, the people said, asking not to be identified because a public announcement hasn’t been made.

The move is an attempt to save the government $100 million of foreign exchange.

The country has been beset by persistent fuel shortages as the central bank doesn’t have the money to pay for adequate imports.

The central bank currently provides letters of credit each month to fuel-importing companies.

The letters of credit had been issued at a fixed exchange rate of 25 Zimbabwe dollars per US dollar, compared with a black market rate that’s almost four times that.

John Mangudya, the central bank governor, didn’t answer calls seeking comment.

“The Finance ministry is looking at the exchange rate and they are best placed to comment on the fuel subsidy issue,” Energy and Power Development Minister Fortune Chasi said.

George Guvamatanga, the Secretary for Finance, didn’t immediately reply to a request for comment.

The southern African nation requires 1.4 million liters of petrol and 2.5 million liters of diesel daily, according to the Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority.

Earlier this month, the central bank also cancelled a gold-subsidy programme, flagged by the International Monetary Fund as contributing to excessive money supply which had weakened the Zimbabwean dollar.

“Bored” Quarantine Inmates Drinking Sanitisers As Substitute For Beer

acting Secretary Dr Gibson Mhlanga

Some returnees in quarantine facilities are taking serious risks by drinking liquid sanitisers as a way of mitigating boredom associated with overstaying in compulsory quarantine.

Sanitisers have a high percentage of alcohol, and in most countries including Zimbabwe this is ethanol, the same alcohol used in liquor.

However, it also contains hydrogen peroxide and glycerine, both of which are safe in the low concentrations for external use but can be poisonous if drunk. The ethanol content is higher than in any bottled drink, which can lead to severe risks.

Posting on his Twitter handle, one of the returnees in a quarantine facility in Bulawayo alleged that some were even hoping to “kill the virus”.

On Saturday, Covid Prisoner shared on his page how some young men were high on the sanitisers before reporting that one of them had been taken ill after showing signs of intoxication.

“Today I came across a few young men high on hand sanitisers. One was quite honest. I want to kill coronavirus on my throat, in case I test positive,” he posted.

Later that same day, Covid Prisoner further alleged that one of the young man had been taken ill.

“The young man in the ambulance imbibed hand sanitiser, ostensibly to kill coronavirus.”

Covid Prisoner further alleged that he had seen another young man intoxicated and holding a hand sanitiser.

“I was chatting with social workers when a young man passed by very sober, appeared a few minutes later, barely able to maintain his balance, with an almost empty bottle of alcohol-based hand sanitiser. The rest is history. I applaud the social worker for being responsive though.”

Although, no official report had been made to the Ministry of Health and Child Care on this practice in quarantine facilities, acting Secretary Dr Gibson Mhlanga warned against the high alcohol content saying it could have negative effects on the human body.

He said while it was not clear whether the alleged returnees were separating the alcohol from the liquid and taking it as 100 percent alcohol or were ingesting it as is, both were still detrimental to health.

“Excessive alcohol intake is dangerous to health. It is tantamount to alcohol poisoning, which can damage some vital organs such as the liver.

“One can actually get into prolonged unconsciousness (coma) with a possibility of failing to recover,” said Dr Mhlanga.

According to some returnees, these practices were pressed on them by the prolonged stay in quarantine facilities with some staying for as much as 40 days instead of the maximum 21 days.

However, the Government has since announced that all challenges that were leading to prolonged stay of returnees had been resolved and everyone supposed to go home would soon be released.

High Court Dismisses Appeal To Have Constitutional Amendments Consultations Put To Halt.

Correspondent

Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Nokuthula Moyo has dismissed an application made by Habbakuk Trust, a local non-governmental organisation which sought to stop Parliament from conducting public hearings across the country on the proposed Constitutional Amendment No. 2 Bill.

Habakkuk Trust, through its lawyers, Job Sibanda and Associates, filed an urgent chamber application at the Bulawayo High Court seeking an order directing Parliament to postpone the public hearings until Covid-19 is over, arguing that discussions may not bring the desired outcome as only 50 people or less would be allowed to partake due to the national lockdown regulations.

Justice Moyo noted that the applicant (Habakkuk Trust) failed to present a well-grounded apprehension, providing concrete evidence on how the respondents intended to go about the process.

“The issue of stoppage of a Constitutional process and waiting for normalcy to return is a difficult claim to sustain for the applicant for, the mere existence of a pandemic cannot be the sole ground to stop certain processes,” Justice Moyo said.

“Processes can only be stopped upon reasonable grounds that indeed they fly in the face of COVID-19 prevention and safety measures. The applicant’s case should have gone further to show how being in the middle of a pandemic is inconsistent with the holding of public gatherings in practical essence.”

The judge noted that no factual basis was made at all for the relief sought.

“On the law, clearly I have no power to stop a Constitutional process that is mandated by the supreme law of our country. Applicant itself avers that what respondent is doing is in accordance with the Constitution,” said Justice Moyo.

“All of us, members of the Executive, Parliament Judiciary are here to uphold the Constitutional provisions of the Supreme law of the country. We do not have the power to suspend Constitutional process, nor are we allowed, per personal views.”

Justice Moyo stated that all the constitutional meetings being held are lawful in terms of the lockdown regulations.

“It is for these reasons that I have found that applicant has not made a case for the relief sought and application is hereby dismissed with costs,” Justice Moyo ruled.

In his founding affidavit, Habakkuk Trust chief executive Officer, Mr Dumisani Nkomo, wanted the respondents to be interdicted from holding public hearing until measures have been put in place to contain and prevent the spread of Covid-19.

“The basis of the application is that the respondents have invited members of the public to attend such meetings at venues throughout the country beginning on 15 June until 19 June 2020 when Zimbabwe is currently under lockdown and public gatherings of more than 50 people is prohibited,” he said.

Burundi’s New President Takes Office After Nkurunziza’s Death

AFP

Burundi’s new President Evariste Ndayishimiye

Burundi’s new President Evariste Ndayishimiye took the oath of office at a colourful ceremony in the capital on Thursday, taking the helm of a troubled nation after the sudden death of his predecessor who left him an isolated nation in political and economic turmoil.

In his oath Ndayishimiye pledged to “devote all my force to defending the superior interests of the nation and ensure the national unity and cohesion of the Burundian people, peace and social justice”.

Ndayishimiye was elected in May in a vote disputed by the opposition, and was meant to take office in August, however the inauguration was sped up after his predecessor Pierre Nkurunziza’s shock death.

In the administrative capital Gitega, tree trunks were painted white and streets had been swept, with a heavy presence of security forces around the city.

Guests began pouring into the stadium from early in the morning, wearing an identical multicoloured outfit given to them by the ruling party and sitting according to their provinces.

Diplomats, members of the military, police and courts took their seats in the upper platform of the stadium.

Democratic Republic of Congo President Felix Tshisekedi was expected to be the only head of state attending the inauguration – taking place in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic – however had to cancel last minute, a presidential spokesperson told AFP on condition of anonymity.

All attendees had to wash their hands before entering, but despite repeated requests to maintain a distance of at least 70cm between them, guests were packed tightly together and few if any were seen wearing masks.

‘Respiratory distress’

Nkurunziza, who ruled the East Africa nation for 15 often tumultuous years, was said by the government to have died of a heart attack last week.

However the 55-year-old took ill less than two weeks after his wife had been flown to a Nairobi hospital for treatment for coronavirus, according to a medical document seen by AFP, and speculation is rife he may have caught the virus.

A medical source told AFP he had suffered “respiratory distress” before dying.

Compared to its neighbours which imposed lockdowns and curfews – with the exception of equally sceptical Tanzania – Burundi has taken few measures to combat the virus.

The country last month expelled a team of World Health Organization experts who were supporting the country’s response to the epidemic.

‘A dark and sad legacy’

Nkurunziza, a devout evangelical who believed he was chosen by God to lead Burundi, leaves a “dark and sad legacy”, Carina Tertsakian of the Burundi Human Rights Initiative told AFP.

His 2015 run for a third term in office sparked protests and a failed coup, with violence leaving at least 1 200 dead while some 400 000 fled the country.

United Nations human rights investigators have said the period since 2015 has been marked by likely crimes against humanity committed by state forces, citing extrajudicial executions, arbitrary arrests, disappearances, torture and sexual violence.

Ndayishimiye, 52, a former army general and Hutu rebel like his predecessor, had been handpicked by the powerful ruling CNDD-FDD party to run in a May 20 presidential election.

He won the vote with 68.7%, and an opposition bid to have the results overturned due to alleged fraud was rejected just days before Nkurunziza’s death.

Ndayishimiye is reputed to be more tolerant and open than his predecessor and is not a regime hardliner.

Observers say the death of Nkurunziza – who was expected to continue to play a significant role – might give him more independence.

However he will still have to please the powerful group of generals at the core of the ruling party, who anointed him to succeed Nkurunziza.

After the news of Nkurunziza’s death Ndayishimiye vowed to “continue his high-quality work that he has done for our country”.

The change in president also opens up the possibility of warmer ties with foreign donors, who cut Burundi off after the 2015 crisis.

A source in the French presidency said the country would work with its European partners and “extend a hand to the new Burundian president”.

“For the first time we will have a leader who is not just forging ahead regardless of the consequences, wrapped up in divine faith,” the source said.

The government has yet to announce a date for Nkurunziza’s funeral.

Zimbabwe Buffoons Plotting Another Coup to Avoid ICC Justice – Enough Is Enough.

Emmerson Mnangagwa

By Nomusa Garikai | “The country’s military leaders have reportedly agreed in private, to invite former Zanu PF political commissar and ex-local government minister, Saviour Kasukuwere, to return back home from South Africa, with the view of laying the ground for his eventual takeover as Zimbabwe president,” reported Spotlight Zimbabwe.

“The disclosures come at a time when, President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime, is jittery and perturbed about rumours of an imminent coup d’état, as the Zanu PF leader all but shut down three major cities in panic this week without notice, to curb potential civil unrest.

“Defence sources said, “some very senior” commanders are concerned about the possibility of the ICC hauling them to The Hague, to answer charges of crimes against humanity and army killings of civilians, in the last two decades through war-like operations such as Operation Hakudzokwi, and the recent August 2018 and January 2019 army killings and shooting of civilians, for protests against presidential poll theft and fuel hikes respectively.”

This story only shows that it is not only Mnangagwa who is jittery and confused, his political opponents too are just as jittery and confused. The same military buffoons were behind the November 2017 military coup and solidly behind Mnangagwa whom they had no doubt would revive the Zimbabwe economy and everyone would live happily ever after.

Well the happily ever after has turned into a nightmare as the economy has sunk even deeper into the abyss and Mnangagwa has turned out to be just another clueless tyrant blundering from pillar to post.

“Zimbabwe is home,” Kasukuwere told Spotlight Zimbabwe. “I will be going back home once the Covid-19 situation has stabilized and security issues addressed. We are all duty bound to work and uplift our country, which is going through unprecedented pain at this moment.”

The military buffoons are now turning to Kasukuwere; just another Zanu PF ruthless tyrant with no more brain than a village idiot!

No one of any substance is going to tolerate another military coup in Zimbabwe. The world is turning the screw on this Zanu PF regime and if there is another coup, the screws will be turned so tight the regime will be crashed to death in a matter of weeks!

The only thing to save Zimbabwe from sinking even deeper into the abyss is for the country to implement the democratic reforms and hold free, fair and credible elections. Like it or not it is time that the Zanu PF buffoon accept that the dictatorship has been a total failure and change, long overdue, must now happen and will happen.

Zanu PF has held this nation to ransom for the last 40 years with tragic, tragic, economic, political and humanitarian consequences. Enough is enough! – SOURCE: zsdemocrats.blogspot.com

Govt Paymaster Who Awarded Self Hefty Salary, Reinstated

MATTHEW TAKAONAH| Mirror| HARARE– The Public Service Commission has reinstated Brighton Chiuzingo, the Chief Paymaster at the Government Salaries Service Bureau (SSB) suspended last year on allegations of awarding himself hefty salary increases and back pays without the knowledge or authority of his superiors.

Chiuzungo’s return to work has shocked the civil service even though he has not gone back to the same office he was using.

Efforts to get a comment from PSC secretary Ambassador Jonathan Wutawunashe were futile as his mobile phone could not be reached.
The Mirror however, has it on good authority that Chiuzingo was reinstated on May 19, 2020 after he challenged his suspension in court.
Well placed sources said Chiuzungo’s return is a confirmation of Government’s lack of will to fight corruption.

They alleged that the State case was sabotaged by Government lawyers resulting in a weak case against Chiuzungo.

Allegations against Chiuzungo were that in 2018 he arbitrarily increased his salary by 40% from $1 261 to $1 755. He also increased his representation allowance from $641 to $899 and housing allowance from $574 to $764.

This was discovered when he allegedly collected a back pay of $641 and he was suspended by Wutawunashe.

Sources told The Mirror at the time that there was deep-seated high level corruption at the Public Service Commission and the SSB where senior officials looted Government vehicles and funds through nefarious schemes.

A former chief at the Public Service Commission inflated his retirement package by calculating it under retrenchment schemes which pay more. A former Permanent secretary for Public Service rehired her mother who was a teacher after she retired and then gave her a fresh retirement package.

The chief at PSC retired without paying his loan of over $160 000 and this was US$ then.
The same permanent secretary employed more than 100 relatives and friends into the civil service without following procedure.
Under a motor car scheme for managers, senior civil servants walked with two to four cars within five years.

“The PSC and SSB were very rotten institutions and we thought the new dispensation was going to clean all that and start on a new page. We are shocked that a man suspended on a case that has paper trail has won his case at the courts and he is back at work.

“We also know that right from the start of the case that Government had no will power to pursue the case hence Chiuzingo is back,” said a source.

Govt And Teachers Agree On June Examinations

State Media

Health and safety measures against infection by Covid-19 must be in place at all June examination centres by June 26 in line with the prescribed standards of the World Health Organisation, the High Court has ruled in an order issued by consent of both the Government and eight teachers unions.

The pledge by Government to fulfill the exam conditions sought by the teachers’ unions means the urgent chamber application brought by the unions became an uncontested matter, thus prompting the High Court to grant the order sought.

The unions wanted the court to compel the Government to postpone the sitting of June examinations until all examination centres meet WHO Covid-19 prescribed standards, but the Government in response said it would meet those standards by June 26.

The public examinations are scheduled to start on June 30, but teachers’ unions were arguing that they were not ready to go back to school until a well-informed analysis of the impact of Covid-19 has been done and all health and safety measures are in place.

When the parties appeared before Justice Jesta Charewa, sitting in her chambers, on Wednesday they thrashed out the contentious issues leading to the judge granting the consent order.

It was agreed that by June 26 2020 Government should ensure that schools are fumigated, and the cleaning and disinfecting carried out within specified and agreed timelines.

Government would provide necessary temperature scanners for teachers and learners, ensure testing and adequate sanitisation, as well as making sure that all necessary steps to meet the Covid-19, WHO guidelines.

Zimbabwe Teachers Association secretary-general Mr Tapson Nganunu in a statement yesterday said that the Government’s response to the union’s application was based on the premise that Government would ensure that learners and teachers who will take part in the June 2020 examinations will be protected against Covid-19.

This, he said would be by taking precautions such as provision of Zupco transport for teachers and learners where necessary. The State would also ensure the provisions of face masks, sanitisers and thermometers at all examination centres as well as the disinfection of centres that were used as Covid-19 quarantine centres.

“With this order in place it is needless to emphasize that all members should monitor the progress and report to the unions any failure to comply,” said Mr Nganunu.

Gaborone Reopened After All Suspected Covid-19 Cases Test Negative

A Botswana citizen being tested for Coronavirus

Gaborone. — Botswana’s capital city Gaborone has returned to normalcy after all the probable coronavirus cases registered last Friday tested negative, an official said on Monday.

Mosepele Mosepele, deputy coordinator for the southern African country’s Covid-19 Presidential Taskforce Team, made the announcement during a virtual media briefing that was broadcast live on national television, Botswana Television.

Mosepele said all the 16 possible cases, which were tested between Friday and Sunday, came out negative.

“All the cases that caused Gaborone to be placed under lockdown were probable ones, which eventually tested negative, hence the decision to return to normalcy,” said Mosepele.

Botswana’s capital city reinstated its strict containment measures starting midnight Friday following the announcement of presumed cases. Malaki Tshipayagae, director of public health in Botswana’s Ministry of Health and Wellness, said the lockdown ended at midnight on Monday.

However, he urged the country’s citizens to exercise caution and all the precautionary measures put in place to mitigate the spread of the deadly disease. — Xinhua.

Biti Says Mthuli Ncube Is A Liar And Must Apologise

Mthuli Ncube

FORMER Finance minister Tendai Biti (Harare East MP) yesterday demanded that Finance minister Mthuli Ncube appear before Parliament to explain fiscal policy inconsistencies and apologise for “lying that he was de-dollarising.”

Biti’s matter of privilege, which was raised in the National Assembly, came as Norton MP Temba Mliswa piled more pressure on government and Ncube saying that MPs’ US$50 equivalent salaries were meagre and should be increased, while their fuel coupons should be in United States dollars.

On Wednesday, Ncube increased civil servants’ salaries by 50% and awarded US$75 and US$30 allowances for the government workers and pensioners, respectively, which would be paid as COVID-19 allowance for the next three months.

But Biti said Ncube and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor John Mangudya misled the nation when they claimed the country was introducing its own currency at par with the US$.

He said people were shocked on October 1, 2018 when banks were instructed to separate nostro FCA accounts and RTGS accounts.

Biti said this was followed by more policy inconsistencies through statutory instruments where the country was told that the multi-currency regime was no longer legal and that the Zimdollar was the sole currency of trade.

“We made a point to Ncube that the conditions did not yet exist for introduction of our own currency. We were further confused yesterday (Wednesday) when the Minister of Finance effectively de-dollarised by the introduction of US$75 allowance to civil servants and US$30 to war veterans.

“It is our contention that Ncube owes Zimbabwe an apology and that he should repeal SI 33 and SI 42 and the Finance Act because he is introducing the Zimbabwe dollar through the back door. The Minister of Finance has been involved in massive lying,” Biti said.

Mliswa then complained about MPs welfare saying while they got a measly US$50 equivalent salary per month, their counterparts in Kenya were getting between US$10 000 and US$15 000 per month.

“We are not immune to the difficulties and the prices in this country. Soon you will read stories that MPs are pick-pocketing and stealing at supermarkets and then you blame us. We want our coupons in US$ and we can no longer be compromised,” he said.

Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi’s response was that Parliament administration should approach Treasury about MPs’ vehicles and fuel.

This angered Mliswa who then took a dig on government, saying that Zimbabwe was in the doldrums because the Executive was busy stealing.

“Parliament does not generate income. Ministers are busy stealing because they are the ones that generate money which is not going to the fiscus. It is this plundering that is making people of this country to suffer. We (MPs) are not here to do chicken runs. We came to represent people, but because government is stealing, nothing is coming to us,” Mliswa said.

Three Die In Road Accident

Three people were killed in an accident involving three vehicles yesterday morning along the Gweru-Shurugwi highway near Guinea Fowl Secondary School, about 20km from Gweru.

The accident which involved a commuter omnibus, a haulage truck and a Ford Ranger double cab, occurred at the 19,5km peg around 9AM.

Two people who were aboard the commuter omnibus, which had three people including the driver and a passenger in the twin cab died on the spot.

The driver of the haulage truck escaped unhurt.
Midlands provincial police spokesperson Inspector Joel Goko confirmed the accident.

He said the double cab vehicle was travelling behind the commuter omnibus from Gweru going towards Shurugwi while the truck was traveling in the opposite direction.

Insp Goko said on approaching the 19,5km peg, the Ford Ranger vehicle tried to overtake the commuter omnibus.

“The driver of the Ford Ranger vehicle moved to the right intending to overtake but noticed that there was an oncoming haulage truck. He then slowed down in an attempt to return to his lane,” said Insp Goko.

In the process, he said, the Ford Ranger vehicle sideswiped with the commuter omnibus which swerved into the oncoming haulage truck lane.

“The commuter omnibus was crushed by the haulage truck which jack-knifed facing the direction it was coming from killing two people from the commuter omnibus while the Ford Ranger vehicle veered off the road and crashed into a tree, killing one person,” said Insp Goko.

He urged motorists to observe road signs when travelling to curb the unnecessary loss of life-Chronicle

Victoria Falls Rain Forest Ready To Reopen For Tourists.

Correspondent

The Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority (Zimparks) last week allowed tourist operators back into the rainforest to view the mighty Victoria Falls which has been at its highest flow in over a decade this year. This comes as the resort town gears to re-open to international visitors.

Last week, government ministers as well as Zimbabwe Tourism Authority (ZTA) and Zimparks top brass, visited the country’s prime resort town of Victoria Falls to assess the situation first-hand. The officials met with key stakeholders in the industry, aiming to prepare for the eventual resumption of tourism in a safe and sustainable manner.

Tourism operators, reeling in the wake of international travel bans due to the Covid-19 pandemic, are eager to re-open as soon as international travel resumes. however, the sector and government are determined to do it in a manner which ensures the safety of tourists and tourism workers. Government, in partnership with tourism operators, has developed protocols and guidelines to be released to tourism players allowing a cautious, staged re-opening.

In an interview with victoriafalls24, Godfrey Koti, head of corporate affairs for ZTA, stressed that the government was focussed on “health before wealth”. Priority has been given to equipping medical facilities and creating protocols for tourism operators.

“We want our guests to know we are a safe, organised destination,” Koti said.

All institutions dealing with tourists now have stringent protocols to follow prior to re-opening outlined in Statutory Instrument 90 of 2020 and in accordance with World health Organisation guidelines. hotels and lodges are encouraged to reach out to ZTA to have their facilities deemed fit for opening.

At a meeting with Tourism minister Nqobizitha Mangaliso Ndlovu last week, Victoria Falls tourism operators expressed eagerness to get into parks to show the world what Zimbabwe has to offer through social media platforms.

A local tourism operator expressed eagerness to get in and take footage of one of the Seven Wonders of the World putting on a show that the world is missing out on due to Covid-19 travel bans.

“While people across the world are stuck at home dreaming of their next holiday, let’s show them what this beautiful country has to offer. Let’s show them the mighty Victoria Falls in all its glory,” a tourism operator in the resort town said.

Neighbouring countries – South Africa, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia – have all opened at least some of their national parks for domestic visitors in recent weeks. The Zambian side of the falls was re-opened last month.

Further pressure is being exerted for full opening of national parks for local residents. At a time when morale has been hit by the Covid-19 tourism downturn, Victoria Falls residents are frustrated by not being allowed into local parks like Zambezi National Park or Chamabondo National Park.

As one resident put it: “We are allowed into the crowded supermarket and we are now allowed back to work, but we can’t go into national parks and enjoy our beautiful backyard and wildlife.”

Zimparks director-general Fulton Mangwanya, however, has expressed concern over the downturn in revenue for the authority which is soon expected to operate as a stand-alone parastatal. Revenue from local residents would go a long way in providing the authority with some income to fund its operations through these tough times.

Tourism, one of the sectors hard-hit by the lockdown, remains optimistic about the future. Plans are underway on a recovery plan which centres around promoting Victoria Falls and the Kaza (Kavango-

Zambezi) Transfrontier Conservation Area as Southern Africa’s hub for safari travel. The region has a vast population of wildlife, plenty of sunshine and wide-open spaces where the incidence of Covid-19 has been extremely low.

The minister also re-assured the government’s commitment to a ZW$500 million support package to cushion the tourism sector from the effects of the Covid-19 lockdown. The facility is available to ZTAregistered operators through their banks.

Zimbabwe’s Matabeleland North province, which encompasses Zimbabwe’s star attractions of Victoria Falls, hwange National Game Park and part of Lake Kariba, has recorded only six cases of Covid-19 to date of which three have already recovered.

Killer Boy Escapes Jail

A 17-year old boy from Tsholotsho has been ordered to perform 600 hours of community service for fatally stabbing his cousin with a knife and a postmortem said his victim died due to lack of proper medical attention at a local hospital.

Bulawayo High Court judge Justice Maxwell Takuva, on circuit in Hwange found the boy, who cannot be named for ethical reasons, guilty of murder with constructive intent.

The boy, who was represented by Ms Linda Mthombeni of Dube, Nkala and Company, was sentenced to perform 600 hours of community service at a clinic in Tsholotsho.

He fatally stabbed his cousin with a knife last year on June 30 when he was aged 16 and his victim was aged 17.

The two had connived with another juvenile to steal a donkey drawn cart from a neighbour’s homestead to carry bags of maize to Gwayi Railway Station on June 30 last year.

As they were walking towards the neighbour’s homestead at around 10PM, the accused person started whistling prompting the now deceased to rebuke him for making noise.

They started arguing which led to a fight.

The accused person ran away and came back armed with a knife which he used to stab his cousin once on the left side of the chest and he screamed and collapsed.

Neighbours came and rushed the injured boy to Sipepa Clinic using the same cart they had wanted to steal.

He was transferred to Tsholotsho District Hospital where he was treated and discharged after a few days.

However, his condition deteriorated and was he readmitted at the same hospital a few days later before being transferred to Mpilo Central Hospital where he was also treated and discharged.

The boy died on August 1 while at his aunt’s place of residence in Bulawayo’s Old Magwegwe suburb. He had just finished bathing, preparing to go back to Tsholotsho when he collapsed and died on the spot.

A postmortem done on August 5 showed that the boy died due to stabbing, and could have survived if he had received proper medical care.

“He had complained of upper abdominal pain, abdominal distension and body swelling which had been highlighted to nurses and doctors at Mpilo Hospital but nothing was done. Food was leaking from the stomach through the stab wound,” read part of the postmortem report. -Chronicle

Zimbabweans to Get COVID Grants In SA

Zimbabweans-in-South-africa – file

Asylum seekers and special permit holders may now apply for the Covid-19 social relief distress grant of R350 a month.

This is the outcome of litigation initiated by the Scalabrini Centre against the minister of social development.

In the Pretoria high court, judge Selby Baqwa said people who hold asylum seeker and special permit status in South Africa, and whose documents were valid at the start of the national state of disaster, may apply for the grant. Applicants will need to provide their documents.

Like any other person, they are also subject to the SA Social Security Agency’s eligibility criteria: they cannot be receiving an income, any other form of grant, or any economic relief from the Unemployment Insurance Fund.

The grant, which was rolled out in May this year, is applicable for six months.

In a statement, the Scalabrini Centre said claims for May had already closed so those affected by the court order would be entitled to claim from June onwards.

“The coronavirus knows no borders, and does not stop to ask for one’s nationality status. Citizens and foreign nationals in South Africa have been seriously impacted,” the centre said. “In our papers we argued that that it was irrational and unreasonable to exclude such persons from being able to apply for the grant solely on the basis of their nationality or immigration status.”

The centre pointed out that people on asylum seeker visas that have expired during the lockdown often face dismissal from work, no income and frozen bank accounts, and they are excluded from the majority of governmental financial relief packages, including government food parcels, because they do not have a 13-digit SA ID number.

“At Scalabrini, we have seen a surge in requests for help. About 1,400 people called during the first eight weeks of lockdown requesting assistance with food, rental or electricity.

“Many of these are families with children who would usually have benefited from school feeding programmes,” it said. -GroundUp

Teenager Stabs Cousin To Death …

A 17-YEAR-OLD boy from Tsholotsho has been ordered to perform 600 hours of community service for fatally stabbing his cousin with a knife and a postmortem said his victim died due to lack of proper medical attention at a local hospital.

Benzema Silences Critics

MADRID. – Zinedine Zidane said Karim Benzema “shuts people up a bit” when he scores goals like his stunning volley against Valencia in a Spanish La Liga football match on Thursday night.

Benzema brilliantly lifted the ball over defender Hugo Gillamon with his right foot and then shot with his left into the top corner as Madrid beat Valencia 3-0 at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium.
Marco Asensio had earlier made it two after Benzema gave Madrid the lead, his brace taking his tally for the season to 21 goals in 38 games.

“His performance was magnificent, like the whole team, but his goal was extraordinary,” said Zidane.

“We know that he is comfortable with his left foot but wow, to lift the ball in that way and to swing like that with his left foot, without the ball touching the ground, truly it’s a very complicated piece of skill.

“It’s beautiful to see it and I’m happy for him.
“Often we see Karim as the number nine of Madrid and he must score goals, but he doesn’t only do that. So when he does score, I’m happy because he shuts people up a bit, and the work, he always does that no matter what.”

Benzema is a controversial figure in France after his alleged involvement in a blackmail plot against former teammate Mathieu Valbuena. He has not played for the national team since 2015.

But the 32-year-old has been in sensational form for Real Madrid this season and his latest goal was his 243rd for the club, putting him fifth on Madrid’s all-time list-The Herald

Daring Woman Introduces Lover To Hubby

UNLIKE catching a cheating man, nabbing an unfaithful woman is not easy.

This is because like a clumsy bear, men always leave behind trails of their infidelity, like scented perfume and lipstick on their shirts, lodge receipts in pockets and raunchy text messages in their phones.

A Plumtree man’s world fell apart when he busted his wife in a steamy embrace with a man she had been bringing home after she initially introduced him as her church elder.

Njabulo Mpala from Dingumuzi suburb who reportedly vowed never to “trust a woman again” flew into a rage after he caught his now ex-wife Semkelwe Ncube flirting with her lover only identified as Tshuma in their matrimonial bedroom.

The heartbreaking discovery reportedly happened on Saturday last week.

Mpala, an informal trader, reportedly caught Ncube cheating after he received a tip-off from a neighbour that Tshuma who was always visiting Ncube mostly in his absence, had sneaked into his house.

It is reported that when he quickly returned home, after that tip-off, Mpala was in for a shock when he found Ncube on their matrimonial bed while being cuddled in the arms of her “church elder”.

Out of fury, Mpala reportedly meted instant justice on Ncube. In the midst of the chaos, Tshuma reportedly made good his escape.

A witness who spoke on condition of anonymity told B-Metro that Ncube who felt guilty after being busted while cheating on her husband deserted their matrimonial home.

The witness said Mpala was heartbroken after he discovered that the mother of his two children had fooled him when she introduced her lover to him as her church elder.

“MaNcube (Semkelwe) deserted their matrimonial home after her husband caught her red-handed with her lover on their matrimonial bed.

“It was disheartening that the lover was someone who was known to Mpala and was always coming to their house after Semkelwe introduced him to her husband as her church elder,” said the witness.
When reached for comment an inconsolable Mpala could neither confirm nor deny the incident. Instead, he avoided the questions by saying:
“Of course I feel bad, but I can’t change what’s gone on”.

Ncube, however, defended her shenanigans saying it was revenge on her husband who had also been cheating on her.

“It was revenge on my husband after I discovered he had been all along fooling around with another woman,” she said- B-Metro

Former Standard Reporter Dies

NATIONAL NEWS

Former Herald reporter Cornelius Nduna (49) collapsed and died at his house in Gletwyn, Harare, yesterday morning in what has been described as a case of sudden death.

The journalist collapsed while working on his laptop computer and was rushed to St Joseph Clinic in Shawasha Hills, where he was pronounced dead.

Family spokesperson and Harare City Council director of health services, Dr Prosper Chonzi, confirmed Nduna’s death, saying he had no previously known health complications.

“It was what may be called a sudden death. We are deeply shocked because he was working normally at the family home he had just finished building with his wife when he collapsed. His body has been taken to Nyaradzo Funeral Parlour and we are awaiting the post mortem results,” said Dr Chonzi.

Born on November 19, 1970, Nduna worked for various local newspapers, including The Herald and The Standard, where he distinguished himself as an investigative reporter.

He later worked in South Africa as a media trainer and for international news organisations such as Associated Press and Sky News, mainly as a freelance journalist.
Nduna is survived by his wife and fellow journalist Vongai Makamure.
The couple had two children.

Zimbabwe Union of Journalists (ZUJ) secretary-general Foster Dongozi described Nduna’s death as a very sad day for Zimbabwean journalism and a great loss to the industry.

“We have lost a pillar. Journalism is poorer following the loss of our comrade.

He was a gentleman and a professional journalist who moved seamlessly through the public and private media and became an international correspondent.

Gold Mining Giant Targets 1 Tonne Monthly Output

By Own Correspondent| Freda Rebecca Gold Mine, a subsidiary of Landela Investments targets to buy 1 tonne of gold monthly over the next three years.

This will also act as an empowerment initiative by Freda Rebecca Gold Mine as it will unveil a number of financial packages to enhance productivity among small scale miners.

This comes after the company was licenced by Fidelity Printers and Refiners to buy gold direct from small scale miners and artisanal miners operating within its 60 000 hectares claims across the country.

The arrangement has seen Landela Investments entering into a smart partnership with CBZ Bank to convert some of its banking halls into Gold Buying Centres for expanded transparency.

“The aim is to buy 500kgs of gold monthly from artisanal miners and tributary holders while the overall vision is to attain 1 tonne monthly over the next three years,” said a source within Freda Rebecca.

According to sources, Fidelity Refiners and Printers gave Freda Rebecca the greelight to purchase gold as a way of ensuring that leakages of the yellow metal are curtailed.

According to the licence and agreement between Freda Rebecca Gold Mine and Fidelity Refiners and Printers gleaned by this publication, Freda Rebecca will buy gold at the same price that is offered by Fidelity of US$ 45 000 per kilogram.

“On the back of this agreement, Freda Rebecca Holdings has entered into a smart partnership with CBZ Bank which will see specific banking halls being converted into specialised gold buying and handling centres. The bank’s extensive branch network has been utilised to ensure the gold buying centres are located as close to the miners as possible,” said the source.

Speaking on the sidelines of an inspection of the recently completed pilot buying centre in harare, Landela Holdings official who refused to be named said the group had noted that artisanal miners were being shortchanged by unscrupulous middlemen in the industry hence the new arrangement.

“Reports have been rife on gold leakages while unscrupulous gold buyers were undervaluing proceeds from small scale miners and they have been cited as the ones fueling smuggling of the yellow metal depriving the country of the much needed foreign exchange revenue. It is envisaged that this initiative will enable government to account for more gold and ultimately plug gold leakages,” he said.

Under the new arrangement, artisanal miners would be paid their full amount for gold delivered in USD within CZB banking halls.

“CBZ Bank has already committed to creating products tailored for miners to enable them access loans for capital expenditure as well as working capital. CBZ Bank will also offer investment advisory services to the small scale miners.Landela Investmemts will offer technical support, equipment and financial support to small scale miners as a way of boosting their operations which will be recovered through gold sales,” said another source within Landela Investments.

Freda Rebecca has set in motion a process to re-register holders of tributaries on its mining claims to ensure that all activities are legalised.

A member of the Zimbabwe Miners Federation who attended the inspection of the pilot facility at one of the CBZ branches expressed her support for the project.

“The giant gold miner must spread its project to other parts of the country or other big mining firms should emulate this gesture to ensure that it covers other areas such as Midlands and Matebeleland provinces among other gold rich areas
as this initiative is expected to increase government’s gold receipts considering the level of transparency as gold from all Freda Rebecca’s claims will be accounted for,” she said.

Coltart Rubbishes Mashakada’s Claim That Millions Of Dollars Were Misused By MDC Alliance Leadership.

Tapiwa Mashakada

David Coltart: I have noted the allegations made by Mr Mashakada reported in the Herald this week alleging that senior leaders of the the MDC A have been involved in misuse of party funds. This is a baseless accusation which serves a ZANU PF agenda.

As the public will know this isn’t the first time allegations have been made like this. In this regard I repeat what I have stated before – namely that since taking office I have implemented systems designed to combat fraud and misuse of party funds.

I’m not aware of any misuse of party funds since becoming Treasurer General in 2019. I also stress that MDC A President Advocate Nelson Chamisa is not a signatory to our accounts & has always insisted on the highest levels of integrity & probity in all matters financial or administrative.

The accusations made by Mr Tapiwa Mashakada are accordingly scurrilous and baseless. It is also pertinent that at no time has Mr Mashakada raised any of these concerns with me in the last year, despite having every opportunity to do so.

One questions why he now suddenly has raised these issues, which appear to indicate a malicious political motive. I also note that ZANU PF has made similar baseless accusations & they are hardly paragons of virtue. What is this common agenda I ask?

Chinamasa Says Mnangagwa Will Never Have A One On One Dialogue With Nelson Chamisa

ZBC

Patrick Chinamasa

Zanu PF party has dismissed calls by MDC Alliance leader Nelson Chamisa for one-on-one dialogue with President Emmerson Mnangagwa, telling the opposition politician to join the POLAD process.

In a statement Friday, Zanu PF acting spokesman Patrick Chinamasa said the party had taken note of indications by Chamisa that he was ready for exclusive one-on-one dialogue with President Mnangagwa.

Chinamasa said the ruling party was committed to the inclusive Political Actors Dialogue (POLAD) process established by President Mnangagwa after the 2018 elections.

“The POLAD dialogue process which is in motion is inclusive of all political players and must be supported by sober thinking Zimbabweans,” said Chinamasa.

“The party (Zanu PF) therefore has no time to entertain calls for exclusive dialogue processes that are being demanded by some political players who think dialogue is meant to resurrect their waning political fortunes.

“We dismiss the demand by Mr. Chamisa and his political grouping in which he is insisting on a one-on-one dialogue with President Mnangagwa exclusive of other players.”

Chinamasa insisted that President Mnangagwa’s commitment to dialogue was not a sign of weakness and warned the opposition against issuing empty violence threats.

“… the President’s call for dialogue is not an act of cowardice or a sign of weakness as some have been tempted to think. Rather it is a gesture of statesmanship, inclusivity, and maturity,” Cde Chinamasa.

He added; “… We advise that issuing empty threats of violence or setting unbridled conditionalities to an ongoing inclusive dialogue framework will not be tolerated.

“The party reaffirms its support for the POLAD process and calls upon Mr. Chamisa and like-minded political leaders to join the POLAD dialogue framework.”

Tsholotsho Teen Escapes Long Custodial Sentence For Murder Thanx To Hospital Incompetence

Undenge Picked Up And Sent To Prison To Serve His Two And Half Jail Term.

Correspondent

File Picture of Undenge going to court from remand prison

FORMER Energy and Power Development Minister Samuel Undenge has finally been picked up and sent to prison to serve his two and half years in prison sentence.

A huge contingent of police officer stormed his residence on Thursday evening to arrest him after a warrant of arrest was issued against him.

Undenge was in 2018 convicted of abuse of office but appealed at the High Court which dismissed his appeal and committed him to serve the sentences imposed by the lower court.

Undenge appeared before senior regional magistrate Trynos Utahwashe at the Harare magistrate’s court on Friday.

He was in the company of his lawyer Alec Muchadehama.

Muchadehama said they have since approached the High Court seeking leave to appeal to the Supreme Court against the latest decision.

He said they have also applied for bail pending appeal at the Supreme Court.

“However, the High Court has dismissed his appeal against both conviction and sentence meaning that he now has to serve a full sentence he was given by magistrate Hosea Mujaya,” his lawyer said.

“He was convicted and jailed two and half years in 2018. His (earlier) appeal against both conviction and sentence at the High Court was successful and he has been out all the while.”

“When his appeal was thrown out, I told him to stay at home because I knew the police would go after him so he was never a fugitive.”

Drax Scandal: Mnangagwa Owes Us A Lot Of Explanations.

Opinion By: Owen Gagare

President Emmerson Mnangagwa with Delish Nguwana of Drax International.

AFTER immense public pressure following the exposure of how the public purse was being looted through the Covid-19 procurement scandal, the government belatedly arrested Drax International frontman Delish Nguwaya last Friday. But the question in the court of public is: “Why are the public officials who assisted him walking scot free?”

Nguwaya, an associate of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s son Collins, was arrested on accusations of lying to the government that his company Drax International was a medical firm in a bid to be awarded Covid-19 procurement deals.

The company was awarded contracts to supply medicines and surgical sundries worth US$60 million without going to tender, before the contract was revoked following a public outcry over inflated prices.

For example, the company was supplying N95 face masks at US$28 yet the average cost for the product was US$4. It has also emerged that Nguwaya has a colourful criminal record and had failed security clearance conducted by the Central Intelligence Organisation.

In clinching the contract, the security clearance was disregarded, suggesting that some powerful persons were behind the deal. Questions have also arisen as to how a criminal found himself around Mnangagwa, his wife Auxillia and their sons, with whom he has been pictured. In serious countries, presidents and their families are very careful about the people they hobnob with.

If the country’s justice system is to gain credibility, law enforcement agents should investigate the role played by powerful persons in facilitating dodgy procurement contracts.

What was Mnangagwa’s role in the deals? This question must be answered in the national interest. What role did Health minister Obadiah Moyo, who pushed for the deal, play? What was the task of Finance permanent secretary George Guvamatanga, who authorised payments? In the court of public opinion, Nguwaya is considered a mere fly in this matter. Who are the tigers?

After all, he did not award himself the contract, but was assisted by public officials who flouted procurement procedures. They, too, should be in the dock, otherwise the case around Nguwaya will prove to be a smokescreen. It is disheartening that the grand corruption is happening at a time the country is battling the Covid-19 pandemic, which is threatening to deal a fatal blow to Zimbabwe’s sickly economy, already in the intensive care unit.

The fact that the corruption is happening during a serious pandemic and at a time when more than half of the population is food insecure, lays bare the parasitic nature of our leaders. They are keen to suck the blood out of long-suffering Zimbabweans for their self-aggrandisement.

The Drax case will be the barometer with which Mnangagwa’s commitment to fighting corruption is measured.Zimbabweans and the international community are watching with an eagle eye. Over to you, Mr President.

Demonstrators Demand Parliament To Impeach Failing President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Own Correspondent

The demonstrators at the Zimbabwean Embassy.

A few Zimbabweans living in South Africa turned up for the solidarity demonstration at the Zimbabwean embassy in Pretoria on Friday afternoon.

The much publicised demonstration was organised by Chapter 2 Movement. The demonstrators called for the immediate impeachment of President Mnangagwa by both ZANU PF and MDC parliamentarians.

The demonstrators went on to drop a petition at the embassy.

Below are the contents of the petition and pictures of the demonstration.

We the people of Zimbabwe, having given the President of Zimbabwe, parliament and Senate legitimacy through our votes, hereby petition and demand our Members of Parliament and senators from all political parties to participate in setting up and moving a motion for the impeachment of the President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa. The Preamble of the Constitution of the Republic of Zimbabwe dictates that sovereignty resides in the people of Zimbabwe.

As law abiding citizens we demand a legal and constitutional solution to Zimbabwe’s challenges and that is the impeachment of a President who has failed. We can no longer continue on this trajectory of pain and suffering, we will not wait for 2023, we demand a constitutional process of impeachment. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa is not bigger than the Constitution, we demand that he be subjected to a constitutional proceed of impeachment.

Our MPs, senators, the Speaker of Parliament, the President of the Senate, the Chief Whips and the leader of the House we implore you to allow a motion on the impeachment of Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa.

Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa must face impeachment for the following reasons as laid out in section 97 (1) (a)-(d) of the Constitution. They include: serious misconduct; failure to obey, uphold or defend the Constitution; wilful violation of the Constitution and inability to perform the functions of the office.

On the part of the President, it has been shown here that the people have expressed their desire to have him leave office for various  reasons which include

Presiding over corruption of the highest order, the first family is implicated in the Drax deal which prejudiced the taxpayers of 60 Million USD

The President presided over the killing of civilians on 1 August 2018, January 2019 and the president presided over torture, abductions, rape and political detention of representatives of the people, media personalities, political activists among others.

The President as commander in chief has presided over the shooting of civilians by the police such as the Pual Munakopa case among others.

The President as commander in chief has presided over the violent human rights abuses by the police, cases include the Bulawayo sisters who were assaulted by police officers, several demonstrators who were assaulted by police officers, we have video footage to prove this.

The President has presided over the looting of Bank depositors funds through various statutory instruments which have disenfranchised depositors and robbed them of their USD.

Section 3 (2) (d) of the Constitution states that good governance is based on “the respect for the rights of all political parties”. Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa has failed in this regard as evidenced by the state sponsored clandestine and brutal assault on the MDC Alliance, its MPs, members, lawyers and other supporters. This is not the Zimbabwe we want. We demand a Zimbabwe that respects the rights and dignity of all forces and voices, even opposition voices.

We the people petition every elected Member of Parliament and Senator to actively push for and participate in the legal removal of President ED Mnangagwa.

We urge the security sector not to interfere in the Constitutional process of impeachment, we will not be intimidated and we urge the international community to pay close attention to the situation in Zimbabwe.

Kuda Tagwirei Makes Easy US$54m Profit From Govt On Latest ZUPCO Buses Deal.

Independent

Kuda Tagwirei

PRESIDENT Emmerson Mnangagwa’s adviser and Sakunda Holdings boss Kuda Tagwirei who has been pocketing millions of dollars from dodgy state contracts, will smile all the way to the bank after making a profit of US$54 million in a fresh bus purchase agreement with the government.

Through his company Landela Investments, Tagwirei will import 500 additional buses for mass public transportation at a unit price of US$58 900 from Xiamen Golden Dragon Bus Company in China. He will then sell each bus to the government for US$212 962.

The landing cost of each bus, including transportation, duty, tax and clearing, will be US$104 147, meaning the company will make a profit exceeding 100%, at US$108 815 per bus.

In total, Landela will rake in a profit of US$54 million from the bus deal. The government will pay Tagwirei’s company a total of US$106,4 million.

As first revealed by the Zimbabwe Independent, Landela recently made millions of dollars through acquiring 162 buses for the state-owned Zimbabwe United Passenger Company (Zupco) in a murky arrangement, which the government, Zupco officials and Procurement Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (Praz) officials failed to explain.

Landela sold each of the 162 buses it bought from Xiamen Golden Dragon Bus Company for US$212 962 despite buying at US$58 900.Initially, government and Zupco officials falsely claimed that Zupco had directly acquired the buses on its own.

The Independent understands Landela imports the buses on credit, as the company pays a 20% deposit, with the 80% balance payable a year after delivery.

Import duty for a 64-seater bus is calculated at 61% of purchase price and shipping cost.

Landela is therefore paying duty amounting to US$37 147 per bus, at the prevailing US$1:ZW$25 interbank exchange rate. Clearing charges amount to US$5 000 per bus, thus bringing the landing price to around US$104 147 per bus. Bigger buses, however, attract duty of 10%.

The procurement procedures in the bus deal remain shrouded in secrecy as line ministries and Praz officials have distanced themselves from the opaque transaction.

Africa, creditors wake up to debt dilemma
Landela announced last week it will import 500 more buses to boost the mass public transportation system as the government is in the process of phasing out private commuter omnibus operators.

A Landela representative who was not named in a state media report on Sunday, said the company was using its own resources to import the buses for the government.

The company also has interests in mining. Landela is one of the companies that had its bank account frozen by the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe in September last year for allegedly being involved in money laundering and fueling the foreign currency parallel market.Questions have arisen as to how the company clinched the bus procurement deal without going to tender.

The buses were bought through a dealer, FAW Zimbabwe, which has offices in Harare. All the relevant ministries in the deal told the Independent that they were not involved in the deal in which the state-run Central Mechanical and Engineering Department (CMED) had a hire-purchase agreement with Landela.

Local Government, Public Works and National Housing minister July Moyo and his Transport counterpart Joel Biggie Matiza both said their ministries were not involved in the deal.

The government has been hard-pressed to create the impression that it was directly acquiring the buses on behalf of Zupco, with Mnangagwa officiating at a vehicle-commissioning ceremony amid pomp and fanfare in Bulawayo in November last year.

At the time Landela imported the vehicles, the Civil Service Commission also acquired 20 new buses from the same supplier to boost its fleet, raising questions as to why the government decided to handpick Landela to purchase buses on behalf of Zupco.

Mnangagwa has been going around the world, and in some instances with Tagwirei, with the government boasting he struck various deals — including bus purchase agreements in China and Belarus — but the transactions are shrouded in controversy.

The buses imported by Landela were reported by state media to be part of a consignment of 1 000 vehicles ordered from China and 500 from Belarus.

Tagwirei, who has been expanding his empire and enjoys close relations with both Mnangagwa and Vice-President Constantino Chiwenga, also has dealings with the military and government officials. Chiwenga’s estranged wife Marry revealed in a High Court affidavit that Tagwirei bought the vice-president expensive luxury cars.

Tagwirei’s flagship company, Sakunda Holdings, has been involved in controversial projects, including Command Agriculture, under which the company failed to account for about US$3 billion in public funds, according to Auditor-General Mildred Chiri’s 2018 audit report. The company was also awarded the Dema Emergency Power Plant project without going to tender, after an experienced United States company, which had won the tender, was corruptly muscled out.

File Picture of a nurse demonstrating at Parirenyatwa Hospital with the nurses message.

MUTARE – Thirty-five nurses at Mutare General Hospital were on Friday arrested for taking part in an “illegal” strike over poor salaries.

The disgruntled nurses were, however, released later without a charge following intervention of the hospital leadership.

Though Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Taviringwa Kakohwa professed ignorance over the arrests, a nurse who was part of the arrested group confirmed the arrests.

“We were rounded up and arrested in the morning at the hospital, as we were on strike. We were then taken to Mutare Central Police Station where we were briefly detained,” she said.

“We were, however, released around midday without any charge following intervention by our superiors,” added the nurse.

Hundreds of disgruntled nurses and other health workers across the country demonstrated this week over poor salaries.

The nurses also demanded the proposed United States-dollar COVID-19 allowance to be paid in cash.

City Of Harare Housing Official Commits Suicide In Bizarre Circumstances

State Media

A Harare City Council employee based at Remembrance Drive offices in Mbare last Friday allegedly committed suicide under yet to be established circumstances.

Ms Margaret Muganga who was working in the Department of Housing and Community Services as acting allocations officer, is suspected to have poisoned herself.

Her death came two weeks after the city council instituted investigations into the alleged unprocedural and double allocations of stands by the Department of Housing.

There are reports that the deceased left a suicide note in which she allegedly revealed circumstances leading to her death. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed Ms Muganga’s death and said they were investigating circumstances surrounding her death.

“Police are investigating circumstances surrounding the death of (Ms) Margaret Muganga. The circumstances leading to the unfortunate incident are not clear and are now subject of the police inquiry.

“We will release detailed information only after inquiries are complete. In this regard, it is difficult to say if there was a suicide note or not,” said Asst Comm Nyathi.

On June 5, the Harare City Council temporarily suspended operations of the Allocations Unit in the Department of Housing to pave way for internal investigations.

Council said the move to temporarily shut down the unit was prompted by desperate home seekers that were duped of their hard earned cash.

However, the operations have since been resumed and according to a highly placed source in council, Ms Muganga was one of the employees implicated during the on-going investigations.

“She is one of the employees implicated in the on-going internal investigations. There are also reports that she left a suicide note before she took her life,” said the source.

When The Herald visited the Muganga family residence at House number 2645 Crowborough Phase 4, her husband refused to comment on whether his wife left a suicide note.

Real Madrid Beat Valencia As Battle For La Liga Title Reaches Home Stretch

Karim Benzema scored twice in the second half as title-chasing Real Madrid overcame Valencia 3-0 in a LaLiga clash played at the Alfredo Di Stefano on Thursday.

Zinedine Zidane’s charges needed to respond to log leaders Barcelona’s 2-0 win over Leganes on Tuesday which saw the Catalan giants opening a 5 point gap at the summit of the Spanish top division.

They (Madrid) struggled to break down an organised Valencia defence in the first half, with Eden Hazard denied by Valencia goalkeeper Jasper Cillessen from close range in the 11th minute.

Valencia thought they had taken the lead moments later when Rodrigo Moreno netted but VAR disallowed his strike citing offside in the building.

Neither side could break the deadlock in the first half.

Madrid took the lead after the restart, Eden Hazard setting up Benzema to find the bottom corner on the hour mark.

Substitute Marco Asensio, who was making his first appearance since the horrific injury in pre-season, scored with his first touch, connecting from a Ferland Mendy cross.

Asensio then turned from scorer to provider, setting up Benzema for a goal of the season contender, the Frenchman finding the top corner with four minutes of regulation time left.

Valencia finished the clash with ten men following Kang-In Lee’s sending off.

KAS Eupen “Pray” For Musona Stay

Farai Dziva|KAS Eupen coach Benat San Jose is hoping that Knowledge Musona will remain at the club for next season and beyond.

The Warriors skipper joined Eupen on loan from Anderlecht in January and made an instant impact; scoring ten minutes into his debut against Charleroi as well as netting the winner against R Excel Mouscron, guaranteeing the club’s Belgian League status in the process.

Eupen’s Spanish coach San Jose was impressed by the 29-year-old’s contribution and hopes his stay at the club will be extended.

“Benat San José hopes for the return of Smail Prevljak and Knowledge Musona to AS Eupen,” reported Belgian publication Lameuse Sport.

South African giants Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns are also interested in signing the Aces Youth Academy graduate but Eupen are the favorites to land him, judging by his agent Mike Makaab’s words.

“His first option is to stay in Europe, there’s no doubt about that. He is 29 years old. People are saying he is old, but he is in the prime of his career. He did very well with Eupen at the end of the season” Makaab said.

“In seven games, he had two goals and a number of assists, he helped the club climb away from the bottom of the log, so he has done really well.” he added.

Arsenal Coach Speaks On Luiz Disastrous Performance

Arsenal coach Mikel Arteta has insisted that David Luiz’s performance against Manchester City has not impacted the decision he will make about the defender.

The centre-back had a disastrous outing on Wednesday and made a defensive blunder that led to Raheem Sterling’s opener on the stroke of half-time before receiving a red card for hauling down Riyad Mahrez inside the penalty area four minutes into the second half.

His bad performance has attracted concerns from frustrated supporters who have called for Luiz to leave upon the end of his one-year deal on June 30.

Speaking after the game on SkySports, Arteta gave his verdict saying: “He (Luiz) has spoken in the dressing room. He is someone that is very honest and straightforward. I’m sure he will talk to you guys and explain his feelings.

“My opinion on David doesn’t change. It won’t change because he had a difficult performance tonight. This won’t change a thing for me, no.

South African Premier Soccer League, ABSA Part Ways After 13- Year Partnership

South African PSL chairman Irvin Khoza has confirmed that they are in talks with four companies who have expressed interest in sponsoring the top-flight league.

The PSL announced earlier in the month that it is parting ways with the Absa Group at the end of this season after a 13-year partnership.

“We’ve got four companies at the moment (who want to sponsor the league),” Khoza told IOL without revealing the identity of the corporates.

“The economy is not in a healthy state, but we are trying to find the best ways to position our proposals. It is a very difficult one. Having said that, we are working very hard (towards finalising a deal).

“At the moment though our main focus is on how to restart the season. Remember, we still have to finish the old season before we can say too much about the new season. Right now, we are waiting for the government to give us the go-ahead.”

Bidvest Group and DStv are reported to be leading the race to clinch the sponsorship deal while betting firm Betway is also in the picture- Soccer 24

COVID -19: Basic Safety Tips For You

What can I do to protect myself and prevent the spread of disease?

Stay aware of the latest information on the COVID-19 outbreak, available on the WHO website and through your national and local public health authority. Many countries around the world have seen cases of COVID-19 and several have seen outbreaks.

Some countries have succeeded in slowing or stopping their outbreaks.

However, the situation is unpredictable so check regularly for the latest news.

You can reduce your chances of being infected or spreading COVID-19 by taking some simple precautions:

Regularly and thoroughly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash them with soap and water.

Why? Washing your hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand rub kills viruses that may be on your hands.

Maintain at least 1 metre (3 feet) distance between yourself and anyone who is coughing or sneezing.

Why? When someone coughs or sneezes they spray small liquid droplets from their nose or mouth which may contain virus. If you are too close, you can breathe in the droplets, including the COVID-19 virus if the person coughing has the disease.

Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth

Why? Hands touch many surfaces and can pick up viruses.

Once contaminated, hands can transfer the virus to your eyes, nose or mouth.

From there, the virus can enter your body and can make you sick.

Make sure you, and the people around you, follow good respiratory hygiene.

This means covering your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of the used tissue immediately.

Why? Droplets spread virus. By following good respiratory hygiene you protect the people around you from viruses such as cold, flu and COVID-19..

Why? National and local authorities will have the most up to date information on the situation in your area. Calling in advance will allow your health care provider to quickly direct you to the right health facility. This will also protect you and help prevent spread of viruses and other infections.

Keep up to date on the latest COVID-19 hotspots (cities or local areas where COVID-19 is spreading widely). If possible, avoid travelling to places – especially if you are an older person or have diabetes, heart or lung disease.

Why? You have a higher chance of catching COVID-19 in one of these areas.

“It’s Not That We Are Unpatriotic, We Are Just Realistic”: Workers

PRESS STATEMENT BY ZCTU PRESIDENT PETER GIFT MUTASA ON WAGES AND PRICES ISSUED AT A PRESS CONFERENCE ON 19 JUNE 2020, ZCTU OFFICES, GORLON HOUSE, HARARE

Members of the Fourth Estate, I welcome you to this Press briefing which is specifically on the issues of wages and salaries and the escalating prices of goods and services.

Let me start by giving thanks to the Almighty God for keeping us safe in this difficult time when we are facing the deadly COVID-19 virus. We give him all the glory and reverence.

If you remember, before the outbreak of COVID-19, we had an unfinished business of fighting for a reasonable living minimum wage.

In particular, the ZCTU was calling for the return of the use of the United States dollar as a mode of payment for wages and salaries.

We argued that the country was not ready to have its own currency because the economic fundamentals were not in place. We even proposed another alternative of using the South African Rand.

Unfortunately we were labelled ‘unpatriotic’ by the pro-establishment.
It is not that we do not love our country, but we were being realistic.

Today everyone is crying as inflation takes a bite on incomes. The ZWL$2 500 minimum wage gazetted by the government has become useless overnight as inflation soars to over 850%.

During the lockdown period, prices of goods and services have risen by over 500% while the Poverty Datum Line is way above ZWL$8 000 and changing every minute.

In any case, most goods and services now require payment in United States dollar. A bucket of maize now averages US$6. Even those services that are pegged in the local currency, they are all benchmarked to the US$.

We said we were chasing a mirage and there was need to go back to the use of US$, but we were ridiculed.

Some might argued that the country has no capacity to pay a living wage and more so in US$. Zimbabwe is endowed with so much sufficient resources if only we curb the high level corruption that has been the major cause of our misery.

You have seen for yourself how the COVID-19 has been used to loot funds from donors. It is just a tip of the iceberg. Minerals are being looted left right and center everyday and if we curb this corruption scourge, we would be able to meet the basic needs of our people.

Even farmers have not been spared. In fact, there is daylight robbery going on. Tobacco farmers buy their inputs using foreign currency and sale their crops in foreign currency.

They do not get all their earnings in foreign currency. When they deposit the little US$ they get into their Nostro accounts, they are paid using the fixed official rate of US$1:ZWL$25 yet the rate out there is over US$1:ZWL$70.

During the TNF meetings, the government pleaded with social partners to give them six months to put the economy back on track. They claimed they would be able to stabilise the currency in six months.

They literary refused to adopt the Rand and the US$ in the name of ‘sovereignty’. You can all now see where we are now!
Everyone is crying, from the civil servant, the student to the informal worker.

The center cannot hold anymore. We are now facing the precipice. Workers have been pushed too far and they cannot take it anymore.

As you are aware, before the onset of COVID-19, the ZCTU had mobilised workers to take action against not only poor wages but also the high cost of living.

The mandate was given by workers during the consultation process in the form of labour forums that took place throughout the country. We had put the action plan on halt due the Corona pandemic and also to give dialogue a chance.

It looks like we are going nowhere and we today are advising the government that we have been left with no option than to exercise our constitutional right to protest.

We are therefore calling on all Zimbabweans who have Zimbabwe at heart to join the ZCTU as we mount a peaceful push for a better Zimbabwe.

However, we can not mobilize on the basis of sectors. No more informal – formal divide, no more urban – rural divide, no east, west, south and north divide only the poor and oppressed collectively waging a struggle for a fair share of the cake.

We are all scavenging for food and starving. So, what is the basis of the division? We need a united front from students, residents, peasant farmers and civic society.

The nurses have already shown the way and we must support them. We salute the heroic and united position adopted by health service workers who are fighting for better salaries.

For too long the government has been reneging on its promises to improve the welfare of health workers. They are front line workers in the fight against Corona virus.

We also salute the Amalgamated Rural Teachers Union of Zimbabwe (ARTUZ) for declaring that from Monday 22 June teachers will be embarking on action to press for US$ salaries.

It is our collective struggle; everyone is suffering and must collectively contribute. We know we will be met with brutal force and there is a possibility that some people might be killed, tortured, abducted and brutalised.

This is the price some of us a prepared to pay. We must all mount a serious collective and prolonged protest until we get a better Zimbabwe.

Zimbabweans are dying silently during this lockdown period due to hunger and starvation.

The ZWL$200 per household promised by the government during this lockdown has not reached them despite it being too little. No one will fight for us but ourselves.

As workers, it is our belief that we have a Constitutional right to go and fill the streets and I am inviting all Zimbabweans to this worthy struggle. It will be tough, but be assured victory is certain if we are united and determined.

GOD BLESS WORKERS OF ZIMBABWE
I THANK YOU!

Mashakada Hits Back At Critics

By A Correspondent- MDC Alliance legislator Tapiwa Mashakada who defected to the MDC-T led by Thokozani Khupe has hit back at former colleagues in the MDC Alliance who have criticized him.

In an article he posted on Facebook, Mashakada said a clarion call is made to all MDC Party Structures and the 2014 National Council saying: “Munhu wese mugango/Umuntu wonke embizeni”

“The MDC party does not have a substantive leader until the Extra Ordinary Congress chooses a new Leader. The shenanigans that happened after Tsvangirai’s death were all nullified by the Supreme Court. These were:Chamisa’s takeover and his Congress, Khupe’s Congress,” he said.

“True Democrats must accept the ruling of our courts and comply with the Supreme court ruling. All accusations about some people being sell-outs or bought by Zanu PF are immaterial. It is cheap policking. Let MDC leaders walk the talk on democracy, rule of law and constitutionalism. The MDC family must unite, go to Congress and choose a new leader to replace Morgan   Tsvangirai and reaffirm the original position that MDC is a labour backed party, a social democratic party and not a neo-liberal party.”

He said the Congress must reposition the new MDC as a Pan-Africanist party with known national values and footprints in Africa.

“But most importantly, a party that is non tribal, non racial, non sexist. A party with a  rural support base. The cabal that is ill-advising my young  brother Nelson Chamisa are making his political Waterloo and spoiling his chances of  ever becoming the President of Zimbabwe,” he said.

Daring Wife Introduces Lover To Hubby As Church Elder

NATIONAL NEWS

Couple Teams Up To Beat “Nosy” Neighbour

By A Correspondent- According to a relative, Excellent Nyathi of Old Lobengula was touched when he heard high pitched cries from his neighbour’s house where a man only identified as SaMaDu was pummelling his wife Partel Mlilo allegedly accusing her of being a woman of loose morals.

The source went on to say Nyathi rushed to the house and restrained the angry SaMaDu from battering his hapless wife.

“He left when the couple was on talking terms at around 9pm,”said the relative.

But Nyathi did not know that by intervening in the couple’s feud he had courted trouble for himself.

Later on in the evening he heard a knock on his door and upon opening, the source said, SaMaDu grabbed him by the throat accusing him of causing a rift in their union.

The source said while he was trying to explain his side of the story a heavy slap landed on his cheek.

“He cried for help as the marauding couple took turns to hit him with open hands and kicked him with booted feet all over the body. They left him shirtless and with torn trousers,” said a neighbour. The source said the couple demanded money from Nyathi.

“They demanded money from Nyathi so that they could free him but he could not give them anything since he had nothing on him,” said a source.

Hearing that he had no money seems to have stoked more anger as they turned more violent and smashed windows with beer bottles.

The source said Nyathi’s mother Juliet Ndlovu (48) phoned police officers who rushed to the scene and arrested the violent couple.

Bulawayo deputy police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele confirmed: “We are investigating a case of assault and malicious damage to property.

“A couple from Old Lobengula suburb beat their neighbour accusing him of causing problems in their marriage. They also damaged windows with beer bottles.”

Mr. President Your Own People Will Soon Surrender You To The Public!!!

By Tinashe Eric Muzamhindo- To me the loot, reflects racing against time. There is something fishy around this kind of looting.

It looks like there is a deadline, or there are fixed targets which must be met, and the whole drama shows that there were no criminals around Robert Mugabe, it was simply a fight to have a turn to loot national coffers!!!

I’m so surprised to see the whole State President, posing for images with criminals who have looted the state coffers. What does this entail on your legacy as a Head of State?

All those people around you, and the praise singers will be spectators when you are in trouble. The nature of people is that those around you will be laughing at you when you get into trouble. Where is George Charamba, the spokesman to former President Robert Mugabe? Today he is in your Government. Where is Oppah Muchinguri?

Where is the politburo which endorsed your dismissal? The same politburo which endorsed your dismissal, is the same politburo which endorsed your Presidency. The same 10 provinces which called for your ouster, is the same 10 provinces which reinstated you.

Your departure will be sad, it is unfortunate that those around you are after crumbs falling from the master’s table, and they are comfortable with what is happening in our country.

I have few questions, why are you holding on to Obadiah Moyo, the failed Minister of Health? Why is your cabinet full of questionable characters? After all the exposed loot of Covid – 19, why are you holding on to Obadiah Moyo who is responsible for all this mess?

President Mnangagwa President Mnangagwa President Mnangagwa!!!

I’m tempted to believe that the Drax International saga has a lot of finger prints around it, given the context that the Minister of Health is still around and you are still holding onto to him.

There could more to it than what we are reading from social media and other platforms. Money that was meant to feed the whole nation during the pandemic was looted by own members of the family, through hoax companies linked to the first family, and do you care about your own legacy?

I was looking at images circulating on social media, which you were posing with those questionable characters, where on this earth would you see a whole some President posing with criminals of that nature? From Drax International, to all the Nat pharm deals, it clears shows that these deals have a lot of finger prints around them, and my simple question is why posing for images with such criminals?

Today Muthuli Ncube is running from one corridor to another, with many papers with Government letterhead, cooking all the measures, it’s too late Mr. President, the centre can’t hold anymore, people are fed up with lies, propaganda, cooked information, fake receipts, fake vouchers, fake statements, failed promises, torture and alleged abductions, it’s time to give an ear or reflect, or else your own people will soon surrender you to the public. It is important to listen, when you are offered advice.

It is not necessary to attack those who open your eyes. I’m surprised that whole some 60 Million USD is transferred from Government coffers without your knowledge? The honest truth is that all these are games, and the money was looted by your own members of the family and close people around you, we the majority have nothing to benefit.

The rate at which press conferences are held being held from one corridor to another clearly shows that the pivot holding all the pillars of the system will soon crumble and all pieces will be scattered alover. It will be very difficult to gather spilled milk.

Today, we are witnessing nurses and other civil servants, going on strike, and this clearly shows you have failed as a leader. Previously you have tried to heap blame on sanctions, yet your own people loot the Government leaving the purse empty.

My simple question, why is the first lady Mrs. Mnangagwa involved in Ministry of Health? You honestly tell me, Zimbabwe has run out of Ambassadors for Health Ministry? What a joke!!!

Where is the 18 Billion stimulus package which you announced during the lockdown? Where is the 500 Million which Muthuli Ncube announced, which was meant for cushioning people? Do you realize how the masses are suffering?

No accountability to platinum deals

No accountability to Gold deals

No accountability to Jumbo & Fredda Rebbeca mine

No accountability to all mining activities in Chiadzwa, and how much worthy of diamonds were extracted during the lockdown?

No accountability on Nat pharm deals

It is high time you must open your eyes and listen to people’s grievances.

On Folk Superstition and Political Ideology

Masimba Musodza

By Masimba Musodza| Enlightenment is man’s emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one’s own understanding without another’s guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one’s own mind without another’s guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) “Have the courage to use your own understanding,” is therefore the motto of the enlightenment.”- Emmanuel Kant, Answering The Question: What Is Enlightenment?, 1784.

What do the snake-oil ravings of, say, “Prophet” Freddy, have in common with a paper on “Systemic Racism” written by a Black academic at western in university. On the surface, nothing at all. However, peel away the semantics and you find yourself confronting my argument; that the roots of an outlook that wears the mantle of race, identity and politics are in folk religion.

One of the most enduring beliefs in Zimbabwean culture is that life’s problems are caused by others. Business failing, marriage failing, job loss, children performing well at school then, at some point before entering university, becoming dissolute etc. Before contact with European Christian missionaries, such misfortunes were the work of varoyi (witches) who could secretly administer poisons that made it look like ordinary illness, or drove a person mad, or induced loss of affection towards a spouse etc. Some varoyi were adept at appealing to their victim’s vadzimu (guardian ancestral spirits), persuading them to look the other way by pointing out their grievances against the victim. Sometimes, it was the vadzimu who withdrew their protection if they felt their descendant was in the wrong- for instance, if they had enabled him to acquire vast wealth only to neglect his children. It was then the role of the svikiro (spirit medium) or the n’anga (the so-called witchdoctor) to reveal the supernatural forces at play in a family’s misfortune, and prescribe potent defences against varoyi or propitiatory rituals to appease the angered vadzimu as the case may be.

Christianity did not end such beliefs. Rather, modern scientific method only reduced the number of illnesses that can be attributed to witchcraft. Still on the list are many disabilities, mental illnesses and learning disabilities. In fact, the popular charismatic churches clothe these ancient beliefs with Christian terminology, but the fundamentals are the same. The pastor plays the role of the sangoma or svikiro, he can see the machinations of unseen supernatural forces and he can grapple with them. Just look at a leaflet of a typical “Black church,” the ones led by a self-styled “Prophet” or “Apostle” or some other such proud title. They offer not fellowship with other Christians etc, but deliverance from curses, witchcraft and promise jobs, residence permits etc. The leader of the church plays the role of the n’anga or svikiro, like these religious leaders of old, he has the unique ability to see the supernatural forces at play in events such as job loss, marriage failure etc. and act in God’s name to deal with these.

My problem with such an outlook is that it becomes an overarching excuse for individual or, as we have seen with the National Day of Prayer in Zimbabwe, national failure among Black Zimbabwean people. It deflects from individual or collective responsibility for certain outcomes. It denies the fact that sometimes, even with the best laid plans and most strategic actions, things can go wrong and there are factors that no mortal has no control over. It opens the path towards pinning the blame on things that may not be rooted in religious belief, but are as less reliant on empirical evidence than sheer enthusiasm, such as “Systematic Racism” or “Patriarchy.” More importantly, it motivates people to direct their energy towards a problem that is not there at all when they should be addressing with the real ones in their lives.

Masimba Musodza

I am not going to deny that there are people in our society who dislike a person enough to seek to do them harm, and rejoice at news of their misfortune. There are people in our society who see relatives, even siblings, and colleagues at work as rivals. They see other people’s success as an act of divine injustice. The man who has struggled to build his business is livid that his younger brother has built his in a much shorter time and what appears to be less effort. The woman whose daughter is now on child number three and still no man to present as a father to any of the children finds it hard to be happy for her sister-in-law, the wife of her husband’s brother, whose daughter has been married for a substantial dowry and is now preparing for an ostentatious wedding. Stories abound of people carrying out diabolical schemes to scupper their relatives and “friends”’ plans, from spreading malicious gossip that can end a marriage to writing letters to the Home Office seeking to get someone deported.

However, the fact remains that not one of such people is capable of supernaturally standing in the way of another person’s progress. They might be able to slip poison into someone’s food. They might tarnish someone’s reputation, leading to the breakdown of a romantic relationship or loss of a career opportunity. But they cannot actively cause unsuccessful outcomes or even physical injury by mere evocation of imagined deities or supernatural entities. Even the Bible does not attribute misfortune to any other force outside of ordinary human action and Providence.

I am the Lord, and there is none else, there is no God beside me:
I girded thee, though thou hast not known me: That they may know
from the rising of the sun, and from the west, that there is none beside
me. I am the Lord, and there is none else. I form the light, and create
darkness: I make peace, and create evil: I the Lord do all these things.
– Isaiah 45:5-7.

Once freed from the notion that ordinary problems are caused by extra-ordinary powers, I believe Black people and whole nations are able to objectively interrogate the idea that the problems we face can be attributed to “Systematic Racism,” “White Supremacy,” “Patriarchy” “White Privilege” and all of the words one hears often these days in discussions. It is not an easy thing, even with a Black population that has access to information and education on a scale that has not been seen since the days of the Nile Valley civilisations. Just as the n’angas and svikiros held positions of power and wealth from trafficking in their belief system, as do now the “prophets” and “apostles” of hundreds of churches, the purveyors of political identity ideologies would not want to see an outlook that has given them social standing and an income scrutinised and possibly abandoned, even if it stands to be replaced by something that, in my view, is morally superior. That something is an outlook or an ethos that ascribes agency and responsibility to Black people and whole nations, rather than the gods or European and American racism.
