“It’s Sentimental Nonsense, Zimbabwe Is A Dysfunctional Banana Republic Period!”

By Wilbert Mukori- Once upon a time, 40 years ago but it might as well be 400 years ago for we have regressed so quickly we are now back in the dark ages, Zimbabwe used to produce enough food to not only feed all her people but had plenty left over to be the breadbasket of the region. Today the nation is starving.

The World Food Programme (WFP) is frantically trying to raise US$ 200 million to feed 8 million Zimbabweans who are facing starvation. To blame the food shortage on drought alone is to miss the point.

Ever since 2000 when Mugabe undertook his chaotic and violent seizure of white owned farms to give to his Zanu PF cronies mostly, the country has lost its breadbasket laurel as agricultural production collapsed and with it the nation’s economy. So when the recent drought and Cyclone Idai struck the region, not only Zimbabwe, it hit us the hardest because we had no grain in the solo and were so impoverished we had to rely on food aid!

Unemployment has soared to 90% as the country’s economic meltdown has got worse and worse. 90% of our people are classified as poor with 34% of them living in extreme poverty, according to a recent World Bank report.

Who is to blame for Zimbabwe’s economic rapid descend into this economic hell-on-earth? Have to blame the corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical Zanu PF dictatorship, the regime that has ruled the country with an iron fist for all the last 40 years. But when all is said, it is us the people of Zimbabwe who are ultimately to blame for letting the corrupt and tyrannical Zanu PF destroyed the country’s once upon a time prosperous economy and, with it, our hopes and dreams!

For the last 40 years we, Zimbabweans, have buried our heads in the sand so we pretended not to see or hear the corruption and tyranny of the Zanu PF dictatorship and so we said and did nothing to stop it. It is shocking that even today with the nation dragged to the very edge of the precipitous abyss some people still continue to bury their heads in the sand!

“A few days ago I was talking to my neighbour – who is a teacher – on the collective job action proposed by the two main teachers’ unions in the country – who have called upon their members not to turn up for work when schools open for the first term of the year, as long as the government (their employer) persists with its arrogant and stubborn refusal to honour its contractual obligation to pay its employees their United States Dollar-pegged salaries in local currency at the prevailing interbank exchange rate.” wrote Tendai Ruben Mbofana.

How is it possible that there can still be one single Zimbabwean out there who is not aware that Zimbabwe is a pariah state ruled by corrupt, incompetent, vote rigging and murderous tyrants. And that as long as the country remains a pariah state, there will be no hope of any meaningful economic recovery. None!

So all these teachers, nurses, doctors, etc. who are demanding a living wage are the ones who are being arrogant, stubborn and, most important of all, down right stupid. The Zimbabwe economic has all but totally collapsed; where do they expect government to get the money to pay them? You do not harvest mangoes from a thorn tree!

Mbofana accepted the economic reality that the teachers, etc. were not going to get a living wage from the government and proffered a solution!

“It is, therefore, without any doubt that the only way teachers, and other civil servants, can successfully break themselves from these shackles of enslavement by their employer, would be for genuine economic empowerment – such that, not only would they have other ready alternatives for sustaining a livelihood, but prove an indispensable asset, which the government would not be able to kick in the teeth whenever it felt like,” he suggested.

“Teachers, and all other civil servants, now need to sharpen their skills in so many other trades that they may have a passion for, or are gifted at.

“Such magnificent and essential skills need to be further meticulously sharpened in the teacher – coupled by business management training – so that they go beyond the boundaries of the classroom, but translate into meaningful, productive, and income-generating ventures that would catapult him or her out of the dungeons of poverty, and vile enslavement by their employer.

“Armed with these skills, there would be nothing to hold them back. There would be nothing standing in their way to a dignified livelihood that is worthy of a creation wonderfully and fearfully made, just below the angels of the heavens, by our loving God – as no human being was ever meant to be a slave of another.”

This is sentimental nonsense at its worst!

Mbofana failed to name even one profession which the teachers can retrain in and afterward find a job that will pay them a living wage. He did not name one such profession because there is not one profession in Zimbabwe where there are no hundreds of thousands qualified and experiences professionals on the Mount Everest unemployment mountain already!

Zimbabwe is not going to get out of the economic and political mess the country is stuck in without addressing the problem of bad governance.

Zimbabwe is not a healthy and functioning democratic nation in which normal market forces such as collective bargaining, economic laws of supply and demand, the laws of thermodynamics, etc. count. Zimbabwe is a pariah state ruled by corrupt and murderous thugs in which chaos, voodoo economic and the criminal waste of human and material resources to feed the insatiable appetites for power and wealth are the norm.

It is therefore shocking that even after 40 years of the Zanu PF dictatorship, with the national economy in the gutter, millions living in abject poverty and despair, etc.; that anyone would still fail to see Zimbabwe for what she is – a dysfunctional banana republic. When you live in a banana republic you do not expect to be paid a living wage!

When Mnangagwa rigged the July 2018 elections, there was a deafening silence from many Zimbabweans; they did not see or hear what happened and, as usual, they said and did nothing to stop him getting into power. He rigged the elections and has since discovered he cannot rig the economy to pay Zimbabweans a living wage.

It is not for a living wage Zimbabweans should be demanding but an end to the curse of rigged elections and of pariah state!

“Seek ye first the political kingdom and all else shall be added unto you,” said Ghana’s first President Kwame Nkrumah. He was right and we, in Zimbabwe, have ignored the advice these last 40 years and have paid dearly for it!

Mohadi Could Lose US$1,2 Million Over Bloody 2008 Elections

Vice-President Kembo Mohadi is still being haunted by the 2008 alleged abductions of opposition activists, with one of the victims, Pieta Kaseke, still pursuing her US$1,2 million compensation claim.

Kaseke, who filed a US$1,2 million claim in July 2009, is still waiting for the determination of her lawsuit which she filed against Mohadi, his then co-Home Affairs minister Giles Mutsekwa, former Justice minister Patrick Chinamasa, former State Security minister Didymus Mutasa, former Police Commissioner-General Augustine Chihuri, former Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) director-general Happyton Bonyongwe, Senior Assistant Commissioners Nyathi and Chiobvu and several other senior police officers.

Kaseke was allegedly abducted on October 31, 2008 in Banket during a period several other MDC-T activists were facing “trumped-up” charges of banditry, sabotage and terrorism.

However, soon after being released from detention following a pact between the late former President Robert Mugabe and the late MDC-T president Morgan Tsvangirai, through a power-sharing agreement, Kaseke petitioned the High Court for compensation and her matter is yet to be finalised.

On July 23, 2019, Kaseke’s lawyers Mbidzo, Muchadehama and Makoni wrote to High Court judge Justice Edith Mushore pursuing the compensation claim.

“We write to advise that the parties have not yet reached a settlement as anticipated. We are advised by the defendant’s (Mohadi and others) legal representatives that the relevant government departments are still in the process of obtaining the necessary approvals in order to finalise the issue,” the lawyers wrote.

“To that end, we kindly request that the matter be set down possibly at the beginning of the next term (end 2019).

That will give the parties more than sufficient time to finalise the negotiations.”

However, at some point towards the end of last year, the matter was set down for hearing, only to be removed from the roll following indications of an out-of-court settlement.

But since then, the matter is still before Justice Mushore and waiting to be set down for hearing.More in Home

Kaseke is claiming US$500 000 for unlawful abduction, enforced disappearance, unlawful detention incommunicado, unlawful arrest and unlawful deprivation of liberty.

She is also claiming US$100 000 for assault, US$300 000 for torture, pain, shock, suffering, psychological trauma, contumelia and loss of amenities and US$300 000 for malicious prosecution.

According to court papers, Kaseke was abducted on October 31, 2008 by police officers and instead of being taken back to Banket, she was handed over to CIO agents who subjected her to further unlawful detention and torture.

“Plaintiff was unlawfully detained and thus unlawfully deprived of her liberty by defendants jointly or one or more of them acting in complicity to one another from October 31, 2008 to December 22, 2008 when defendants then conspired as they had been doing all along to detain plaintiff officially at a police station,” Kaseke said.

She later appeared in court charged alongside Concelia Chinanzvavana, Fidelis Chinanzvavana, Fidelis Chiramba, Violet Mupfuranhewe, Colin Mutemagawu, Manuel Chinanzvavana, Audrice Mbudzana and Rodrick Takawira.

VP Mohadi In Soup Over 2008 Abductions

Mnangagwa Involved In 2 Speech Accidents One After The Other: “I Created A New Corruption”

NATIONAL, BUSINESS, BREAKING

By Farai D Hove| ZANU PF leader Emmerson Mnangagwa has twice announced that created a new corruption.

While addressing an Transparency International meeting in December, he literally repeated saying that he created a new corruption while referring to the new Zimbabwe Anti-corruption commission.

Was this a slip of the tongue or a blast of the truth?

He said he created a “new corruption”, and then once again repeated while calling it “a new corruption.

His comments come at a time when the ZACC was being criticised for pursuing a selective agenda.

Kariba Man On Police Wanted List Over Rape

By A Correspondent- A Kariba man is on the run after allegedly raping his girlfriend’s 12-year-old daughter who had been sent by the mother to collect a drink from him.

Mostafu Chande (32) allegedly visited the minor’s mother as she was not feeling well.

Chande’s lover reportedly asked for something cold to soothe her throat and he offered to buy her a soft drink and asked the minor to accompany him to his house as he wanted to collect an empty bottle.

He then sent the minor to a nearby tuckshop to buy the drink but she found it closed and came back home to notify him of the development.

She found him outside before he told her to take the empty bottle on top of the fridge inside the house.

Chande allegedly followed into the house before closing the door and pushing her to the bed, covering her face with a pillow and raping her while the radio was playing at high volume.

Officer Commanding police Kariba District, Chief Superintendent Christopher Ngulube confirmed the incident, which occurred on the evening of January 1, 2020.

“As police we can confirm receiving a report of rape involving a minor in Nyamhunga suburb. The alleged perpetrator, one Mostafu Chande aged (32) is now on the run and wanted by the police,” he said.

“We would like to urge parents to look after their children especially the girl child and not leave them in the care of male adults. The mother should not have sent a minor at such a time.”

He said preliminary investigations show that the mother was in a love relationship with Chande.

After committing the crime, Chande allegedly gave her ZWL$20 before ordering her not to tell anyone.

The matter came to light after a neighbour who had come to visit the sick mother noticed that she was crying out of pain, could not walk properly and asked her what had happened.

She revealed what had happened and the matter was reported to the police.

Realising that the matter had come to light, Chande disappeared and is now wanted by the police.

Spotlight Comments Saying ED Now Under House Arrest

The power tussle between Emmerson Mnangagwa, and his deputy, Vice President Rtd General Constantino Chiwenga, to gain control of the country has reached boiling point, amid reports that Chiwenga has all but put Mnangagwa under virtual military house arrest, as indications of the president’s embarassing exit from office continue to mount, Spotlight Zimbabwe comments saying.

Their report of allegations further says:

The Office of the President and Cabinet, in a tacit admission of Mnangagwa’s involuntary confinement to the country, despite taking his annual leave, in a statement on Wednesday said Mnangagwa had began his three-week annual leave, but will remain in the country while Chiwenga and VP Kembo Mohadi, take turns to run government business.

Chiwenga returned from China last Saturday, where he was undergoing a medical review, and is also however thought to have been invited to Beijing for a secret private visit by Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

Details of Chiwenga’s meeting with Jinping remain shrouded in mystery, as Chinese media was reportedly slapped with a blackout on covering the visit.

“The Office of the President and Cabinet wishes to advise that His Excellency the President, Cde E.D. Mnangagwa, has started his annual vacation which runs for the next three weeks until the end of the month,” reads the OPC statement signed by acting chief secretary of cabinet and Mnangagwa’s spokesman, George Charamba.

“During this period, Honourable Vice Presidents General (Rid) Dr C.G.D.N. Chiwenga and Colonel (Rid) Cde K.C.D. Mohadi, will take turns to act in his place, starting with Honourable Vice President Chiwenga. The President will spend his vacation in the country.”

Senior government officials close to the state security ministry, said security minister, Owen Ncube’s office, has advised Mnangagwa to remain in the country and avoid foreign trips and summits “indefinitely” as he was now under virtual military house arrest from VP Chiwenga’s faction functionaries running the army and air force, who are still bent on staging a putsch against him.

“There is an eyes-only report which minister Ncube recently presented to Mnangagwa, when the two met at his farm in Kwekwe before Christmas,” the officials said.

“The minister warned Mnangagwa against leaving the country, because the possiblilities of a coup against him are now stronger and more threatening than before. Key elements of the president’s security provided by the presidential guard and air force have been compromised, and Mnangagwa now relies heavily on the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) for protection and his daily movements. He (Mnangagwa) has literally been put under virtual military house arrest by Chiwenga according to the CIO, because the army and air force are now fully aligned to his faction. They have sealed and gained control of our national borders and airspace with help from Chinese military experts.”

Zimbabwe was hit by an aviation systems crisis last November, which temporarily shutdown the country’s airspace, causing rattles among security chiefs.

Chiwenga is reported to have flown out of the country, on his latest visit to China aboard a private jet on December 20, 2019 in the middle of a strike by air traffic controllers.

On the same day Chiwenga left for the Far East, the Chinese government pledged continuous support for Zimbabwe’s aviation industry and capacity development, through one of their diplomats in the capital.

Speaking at a Bilateral Training Seminar on aviation held in Harare, Chen Ning, the economic and commercial counselor at the Chinese Embassy, emphasized that the Chinese government will actively assist Zimbabwe in its efforts to restore the development of the country’s civil aviation industry.

“We will promote Chinese airlines to open direct links to Zimbabwe, continue to deepen bilateral aviation cooperation between China and Zimbabwe, provide human resources training in the field of civil aviation for Zimbabwe,” he said.

“From the 1990s to the present, the Chinese government has financed more than 4,900 Zimbabwean officers and specialists to attend seminars and training courses in China,” Chen said according to news agency Xinhua.

Chiwenga is now expected to finish off Mnangagwa’s term, and will receive a Chinese bailout to stabilise the economy until 2023, when a civilian leader and successor of his choice, with a leaning towards Beijing is expected to takeover, army sources have said.
Zimbabwe’s military placed the late founding President Robert Mugabe under house arrest in November 2017 during the coup that ended his almost four decade rule.

Rumours and speculation about Mnangagwa being under house arrest, have also been rife since he assumed power two years ago.

In May 2019, an unverified audio message went viral and circulated among Zimbabweans on social media, alleging that Mnangagwa was under house arrest and being pressured to resign, by the army.

Mnangagwa’s spokesman and speech writer, Charamba, was unavailable for comment last night, as his mobile phone was switched off.

ED Lied To Kuwadzana Residents On School Fees Increment

Barely a week after President Emmerson Mnangagwa promised Kuwadzana residents that there will not be fees increment, acting primary and secondary education minister Professor Amon Murwira has announced that schools can increase school fees according to market forces.

Murwira yesterday confirmed the development, saying only tuition would remain unchanged.

He said levies could be increased in line with market forces, only after at least 20% of the parents vote to approve the increase.

“The issue that I talked about is no tuition fee increases. Boarding fees, food

fees are subject to market forces. Therefore, that one will be charged reasonably,” Murwira said.

“They have been given guidelines on how to proceed with boarding fees. What we are talking about here are tuition fees and that there will be no tuition fee increases in our public schools.”

This came a week after President Emmerson Mnangagwa warned school authorities against hiking fees without government approval.

Schools collect levies, which are controlled by School Development Committees (SDC), and most government schools charge $10 per term as tuition, which is managed by headmasters.

Murwira said government had allocated $8 billion to the ministry, which would be used to finance procurement of stationery, owing to a shortfall that will be created after blocking tuition increases.

“We must also know that the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has a budget of $8 billion. The tuition fees are going to move towards helping this, but they are not a complete solution to it,” he said.More in Home

“Government is investing a lot to move towards free basic education as per the Constitution, so that’s why the ministry is given such a budget. It is important to note that public schools are not only funded from tuition, they are funded (by) the taxpayer.”

Government has been failing to fund schools over the past years and even owes a number of institutions a lot of money in unpaid Basic Education Assistance Module (BEAM) fees.

Treasury has also been accused of failing to pay fees for war veterans’ children.

Murwira said this mistake would be corrected starting this year.

“We have allocations from Treasury for that. If there have been no speedy releases in the past, we are talking about the future here,” he said.

On private schools charging fees in foreign currency directly or indirectly, Murwira said: “Government has also learnt that some private schools are charging directly or indirectly in forex. Responsible authorities of such schools are warned that they risk deregistration of such schools,” he said.

Government teachers have threatened to down tools and not show up next Tuesday when schools open over a salary wrangle with their employer, but Murwira ducked the question saying he was spurred by hope.

“We are obviously concerned, but the reason I wake up every day and work is because I have hope. At this point, we are not talking about that because it’s in the hands of the Public Service Commission. We are talking about school fees at the moment,” he said.

More Woes For Mary Chiwenga

Mrs Mary Chiwenga - Picture by Kudakwashe Hunda

Mary Chiwenga is reportedly set to lose the 300-hectare farm located along Domboshawa Road that she grabbed from the Agriculture Rural Development Authority (Arda) in February 2018.

The farm was used to produce crop seed for farmers by the authority. Vice President Constantino Chiwenga’s estranged wife, Mary Mubaiwa Chiwenga is facing another major headache as she is set to lose her farm.

However, Mary finally managed to get her hands on the farm following the November 2017 military coup, after her first attempt to get the property in 2013 failed.

When she grabbed the farm, she claimed that she wanted to build a school and insisted that everything was done above board with the full knowledge of the Ministry of Lands, Agriculture and Resettlement.

Following her spectacular fall from her husband’s good graces, she is set to lose the farm as she has lost her proximity to power. The couple is going through a nasty divorce which has seen Mary bearing the brunt of the fight after she was arrested by the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (ZACC) allegedly at the behest of Chiwenga.

A source who spoke to online publication the Zim Morning Post revealed that Mary had attempted to get a loan from CBZ to in an attempt to legitimise the farm grab. However, the bank refused to approve the loan.

The source said,

“She recently applied for a loan at CBZ but did not get the green light from the bank. She wanted to use the loan to buy out Arda which was actually renting another farm after soldiers ordered them out at Mary’s behest.”

A lawyer who spoke to the publication added,

“These are what I call spoils of war. You cannot sympathise with her, taking into regard the way she took over the farm. People should not abuse their proximity to power to settle personal wars, and this also applies to Chiwenga and Marry.”

The embattled former model regained her freedom this week after being released on $50 000 bail by the High Court. She spent three weeks in custody and is facing numerous allegations which include, six counts of illegally externalizing funds well worth over one million United States Dollars, five for money laundering and one for fraud where she allegedly forged a marriage certificate.

The charges allege that she illegally solemnized a secret marriage presided over by Acting Chief Magistrate Munamato Mutevedzi without Chiwenga’s consent. She is also facing charges of attempting to kill the Vice President when he was critically ill in South Africa.

Bizarre Murder: Man Sits On Top Of His Father Until He Dies For Refusing To Pray For Him

A 47-YEAR-OLD Chivi man allegedly sat on top of his sleeping 101-year-old grandfather and suffocated him for refusing to pray for him, police have confirmed.

David Chokureva of Mhosva Village under Headman Chipindu allegedly forced open the door to Maribha Chaka’s bedroom in the wee hours of the night.

He attempted to wake up the elderly man who was fast asleep together with his wife but he did not respond.

This angered Chokureva and he allegedly sat on top of his victim, weighing heavily on the centenarian leading to his death by suffocation.

Masvingo police spokesperson Chief Inspector Charity Mazula said the incident occurred on Tuesday at around 1am.

She said the suspect was arrested and is assisting police with investigations.

She said the body of the deceased was taken to Chivi District Hospital mortuary for post-mortem.

“I can confirm receiving a murder report involving a man who is suspected to be mentally challenged,” said Chief Insp Mazula.

She said Chokureva who lived some distance away from his grandfather’s homestead asked his cousin, Mr Alfred Samanyika of Shangwa Village to accompany him to the elderly man’s homestead.

The two found Chaka and his 92-year-old wife fast asleep.

Chokureva knocked on the couple’s bedroom door demanding that the elderly man should wake up and pray for him but received no response. This could have angered Chokureva who forced open the door to the couple’s bedroom.

“He sat on his grandfather while his wife and the cousin who had remained outside watched,” she said.

Chief Insp Mazula said Chokureva rushed outside and told his cousin that he had caused the death of Chaka.

A report was made to officers at Chivi police station who attended the scene and took the body to the hospital mortuary for post-mortem leading to the suspect’s arrest.

MDC Regrets Supporting 2017 Mnangagwa-Chiwenga Coup On Mugabe

THE Nelson Chamisa-led MDC has said the opposition party marched in support of the ouster of the late former President Robert Mugabe in 2017 without knowing it was backing the wrong horse.

The MDC and ordinary Zimbabweans took to the streets in November 2017 in support of Mugabe’s ouster and celebrated the coming in of Emmerson Mnangagwa as President after the military coup in November 2017.

Two years on, MDC chairman for Harare province, Wellington Chikombo, says they made a mistake and have realised that Mnangagwa cannot be a solution to the Zimbabwean crisis.

“Mnangagwa cannot give us a solution today when he was part of the Mugabe administration for 37 years. He is an old person in new clothes, that doesn’t make him young. Look at his behaviour,” Chikombo said while addressing beneficiaries of the party’s social support programme in Zengeza, Chitungwiza.

“When we marched in 2017, we celebrated trouble. We jumped from a frying pan into the fire. We thought we were rescuing the people from Mugabe, but we wasted our energy on Mnangagwa. We wasted our time.”

Chamisa has repeatedly accused Mnangagwa of duping the late MDC leader Morgan Tsvangirai that after Mugabe’s ouster, the country would defer elections and appoint a transitional authority to run government business until the economy had stabilised.

Chikombo said it was a sorry sight to see pensioners suffering in long queues to access cash from banks, saying: “Our pensioners here are struggling. In other countries, being old pays. People are paid for getting old, but here, our old men and women are eating vegetables without cooking oil.”

In 2020 We Can Not Continue With Mthuli And Mangudya’s Egos

AS the curtain came down on the year 2019, one could not stop pondering what the future—yes the immediate future—has in store for long-suffering Zimbabweans.

As Econometer Global Capital, we consistently sifted through Zimbabwe’s political economy, attempting to unpack why a country that has so much potential appears to be backsliding.

In our analyses, issues relating to ruinous government policy and confusion emanating from inconsistencies were played out.Another issue that we would validate that appears to have put Zimbabwe on the tenterhooks is the cold war between monetary and fiscal authorities. Put differently, we are of the view that cohesion between pronouncements (which can be interpreted as policy) between finance minister Mthuli Ncube and Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe governor John Mangudya has been minimal.

Ideally, the central bank chief, while he reports to the finance minister, should operate the apex bank independent of his boss. Ncube’s predecessor, Patrick Chinamasa, a lawyer by training, gave Mangudya greater latitude to run the central bank independently. There were consequences, some of which Ncube says he wants to undo.

The increasingly visible policy differences between Ncube and Mangudya have had some results. The outcome has seen policies being quickly reversed, confusing contradictions in public statements and politicians and experts taking sides with either of the two.

The unilateral measures by Treasury which include abolition in June of the decade-old multi-currency system that allowed the use of the greenback and the South African rand within the country, was widely seen as a reflection of lack of amity between the central bank and the finance ministry.More in Home

AT the beginning of 2019, I laid out my possible economic outcomes for the year and most…

Since the introduction of the bond notes in 2016 which, according to the RBZ, were at par with the US dollar, Mangudya maintained this fallacy in his bid to avoid unsettling the markets.

While removing this parity made a lot of economic sense, it resulted in carnage that authorities are battling with. Many argued that Zimbabwe was not ready to introduce the monetary reforms citing the absence of key fundamentals that can support a domestic currency.

In his 2020 National Budget, Ncube announced that government would scrap subsidies on maize and wheat imports. This move, which dovetails with IMF-prescribed structural adjustment programmes, was expected to push up the price of the staple and cause political instability.

Barely a month after the budget and a few days before the Zanu PF annual conference, President Emmerson Mnangagwa announced that government would subsidise the two agricultural commodities, a development that was seen as a reprieve to consumers. The policy inconsistencies cannot get any worse than this.

For now, Zimbabwe’s economy continues to be hamstrung by rising inflation, foreign currency shortages, high unemployment and rolling power cuts.

Going into the future, we urge monetary and fiscal authorities to harmonise their policy pronouncements and put Zimbabwe first instead of their egos.

Unlicensed Driver Runs Over 5 People Seated Off The Road.

An unlicensed driver lost control of his vehicle and hit five people who were seated by the roadside, killing one in Beitbridge.

Matabeleland South provincial police spokesperson, Chief Inspector Philisani Ndebele said the accident occurred on Monday at around 6AM just outside Beitbridge Town along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road.

“Timothy Tsikai (25) from Beitbridge who is an unlicensed driver was driving a Toyota Wish towards Beitbridge Border Post. Upon reaching the 316 kilometre peg along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road Tsikai lost control of the vehicle which veered off the road and hit five people who were seated by the roadside.

‘’The vehicle rolled once before landing on its roof. One person, Gift Tsuro (48) from Mutoko died upon admission to Beitbridge District Hospital. The other four people and Tsikai sustained injuries and were referred to Beitbridge District Hospital for treatment,’’ he said.

Chief Insp Ndebele warned motorists against driving without licences as it is an offence. He said drivers should desist from speeding and ensure they exercised caution at all times.

“People should desist from driving vehicles if they are not licensed drivers as they don’t have the relevant skills and training needed for one to be a driver. By so doing they will also be committing an offence. Drivers are urged to exercise caution at all times and adhere to road regulations,” he said.

Lawless Machete Thugs Attack Two “Love Birds” Taking An Evening Walk In Mutare

Machete wielding robbers pounce on lovebirds

Correspondent|A man from Sakubva Township in Mutare is lucky to be alive after he was attacked by machete welding gang on Wednesday evening while enjoying time out with his teenage lover.

Brighton Pazerera (22) who was in the company of his girlfriend, Mollin Nyanhere (18) of Dreamhouse Chikanga, were on their way to Darlington Township when three men emerged from the side of the road armed with machetes.

Manicaland deputy police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Luxson Chananda said the gang ordered the lovebirds to sit down but Nyanhere managed to escape leaving her boyfriend in the hands of the gang.

Pazerera reportedly refused to comply with the orders and was struck with a machete on the head.

The other two robbers searched Pazerera pockets and took US$15 and Nokia 1200 phone.

The following day, Pazerera managed to spot one of the robbers later identified as Freeman Maziyavana (46) at Sanhanga Building and managed to apprehend him with the help of security guards who were manning the building.

The matter was reported to Mutare Central Police station who arrested Maziyavana and recovered a machete and hacksaw.

Police said other two suspects are still at large.

“We urge members of the public not to walk at night in secluded areas as they risk being mugged,” said Chananda.

63 Canadians On Crashed Ukraine Plane, Canada Says Iran Missiles Brought The Plane Down.

Own Correspondent |Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau has revealed that it was actually Iran’s missile that shot down the Ukrainian airliner with 176 passengers on board of which 63 were Canadians.

He said that evidence indicates an Iranian missile downed the jetliner on Wednesday, adding that the strike “may have been unintentional”.

According to the Prime Minister, Canadian and allied intelligence carried out the investigation.

He said it appeared it was a surface-to-air missile that struck the plane.

“We have intelligence from multiple sources, including our allies and our own intelligence. The evidence indicates that the plane was shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile,” Trudeau told reporters in Ottawa. “This may well have been unintentional,” according to Al Jazeera.

Recall that US officials had said it was “highly likely” that an Iranian anti-aircraft missile downed the plane.

Iran had dismissed those reports as “illogical rumours.”

Ukrainian International airliner bound for the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, crashed minutes after takeoff from the Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran on Wednesday.

The incident happened shortly after the Iranian military had launched over 15 missile attacks on the bases of US and its allied in Iraq

Iranian investigators released an initial report on Thursday that said the airliner was on fire and tried turning back but its crew never made a radio call for help.

Mnangagwa Seals Mugabe’s Deal To Give Russia Platinum And Diamonds Mines In Exchange For Army Artillery

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov

Independent|ZIMBABWE is on the verge of replacing its antiquated military helicopters with Russian-made fighter jets, among other armaments, in a deal that has seen Harare mortgaging part of its vast mineral wealth to Moscow, it has emerged.

The deal is one of many inked during a trip to Zimbabwe by Russian Foreign Affairs minister Sergey Lavrov in 2018. The trip was part of Lavrov’s tour of Africa, during which he highlighted that Moscow was scouting for military cooperation opportunities with Harare in a deal tied to a US$3 billion joint platinum project with the southern African country.

A Russian consortium, including Kremlin-owned arms conglomerate Rostec, in 2014 partnered a Zimbabwean group to set up a US$3 billion platinum operation near the capital city, but the project had stalled.

This was followed by a visit to Russia in January 2019 by President Emmerson Mnangagwa where he sealed a number of deals ranging from collaborative geological exploration, mineral resource management, platinum extraction and diamond exploration with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin.

At the time of his visit to Moscow, Mnangagwa noted that Harare’s long-term plan was to bolster its military arsenal with Russian-made hardware. Military sources close to the arms-for-minerals deal told the Zimbabwe Independent this week that Harare, seeking to fortify its arsenal in the region where neighbouring countries were also strengthening their military hardware, would soon take delivery of Russian-made MiG-29 and MiG-35 aircraft to replace its single-engine J-7 fighter jets procured from China.

The deal, sources said, was forged during former president Robert Mugabe’s tenure, but stalled when he was toppled through a military coup that catapulted Mnangagwa to the helm.

However, Mnangagwa’s trip to Russia in January last year, sources said, was partly meant to reassure Moscow that his administration was still committed to the deal.

During Mugabe’s time, the then Defence minister, Sydney Sekeramayi, travelled to Kubinka, Russia, in 2016, to attend war games where fighter jets including MiG-29s were showcased among other Russian armaments.

The military exhibition, held at the military-themed Patriot Park, was organised by the Russian defence ministry.“Zimbabwe has always wanted to replace its fighter jets with Russian-made MiG-29s and MiG-35s.But it was discouraged by the West. Buying military hardware is a major military strategic statement.

The idea to acquire military equipment from Russia has always been on the cards since 2002. More recently, in 2017, this matter resurfaced with Zimbabwe seeking to buy MiG-35s from Russia in exchange for the Darwendale platinum reserves among other mineral resources,” a source who spoke on condition of anonymity told the Independent this week.

“You must remember that Sekeramayi went to Russia in 2016, seeking to buy fighter jets under the cover of attending military games. And there is a report to that effect by MiG confirming that they had finished quoting and costing, as well as doing specification and contract terms with Zimbabwe. So when the Russians came here last year, the idea was to revive the deals which had stagnated when Mugabe was toppled.

“When Zimbabwe attended the military games hosted in Moscow in 2016, the idea was to familiarise themselves with the fighter jets they were going to acquire through its mineral claims.”

At that time, Sekeramayi was quoted by a Russian publication, Sputnik, as saying: “It is a very good exhibition and the ground forces assets that have been shown are very impressive. There are some that we are very interested in and that will be discussed with the relevant authorities.

“At this point in time we are still assessing and are coming to a conclusion on what we want to acquire from here but that could be artillery, jet fighters and helicopters.”

Russian armaments including MI-17-VS helicopters, MI-17ISH, MI-8/17 and MI-35 were showcased during the war games.Defence minister Oppah Muchinguri-Kashiri was not reachable on her mobile phone. She also had not responded at the time of going to print to questions on when Zimbabwe would take delivery of the new fighter jets from Russia.

Her deputy Victor Matemadanda was also not reachable for comment.Zimbabwe National Army (ZNA) spokesperson Overson Mugwisi did not pick up calls to his mobile phone when the Independent called. He also did not respond to questions sent to him by email.

Western countries, which had traditionally supplied Zimbabwe with military hardware, cancelled the deals in 2000 after they slapped Mugabe with sanctions over Harare’s deteriorating human rights record.

Zimbabwe has been struggling to bolster its arsenal which was heavily depleted when the country intervened in the costly Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) war of 1998.

The Zimbabwe government has previously demanded US$1 billion in compensation from Kinshasa for participating in the war. When asked to explain the nature of mining deals Zimbabwe has forged with Russia over the years, Mines and Mining Development minister Winston Chitando said he was “busy” and requested for questions via text messaging.

He had not replied at the time of going to print.

Mnangagwa Reminds POLAD Members Of Their Ornamental Value

Mnangagwa leading his POLAD partners in a tour of his farm.

Independent|THE political rejects that make up the Political Actors Dialogue (Polad) found out this week that they have nothing more than ornamental value when President Emmerson Mnangagwa ploughed ahead to gazette amendments to the constitution.

This is despite promises from the septuagenarian leader that he would debate with the motley crew of losers the proposed changes before they are gazetted and taken to Parliament.

“During the last meeting of Polad, one of the resolutions read out was that the proposed Constitutional Amendment Bill should not be gazetted, but instead brought to Polad where it would be discussed and other parties input,” one of the hangers-on, a member of the totally irrelevant grouping and lifetime National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) leader Lovemore Madhuku whined.

One of the paradoxes of Zimbabwean politics is that the Professor Madhuku you see in a university lecture theatre is totally different from the Madhuku you see rummaging for scraps of food in Zimbabwe’s God-forsaken political dustbins.

“It was agreed that a Bill would then be brought to Parliament with amendments also from other political parties and, instead of focussing on the Zanu PF needs, we will have an omnibus Bill, but that was not followed. But they went ahead and gazetted the Bill.”

In a further demonstration of just how useless the impact of the grouping is, Justice minister Ziyambi Ziyambi swatted away their concerns, as one would an irritating fly, pointing out that the government has no obligation to take bills to Polad. It is laughable that the leaders of parties that garnered less than 2% of total votes cast in the 2018 elections were demanding cars and allowances.

These opportunists, who have already burdened the taxpayer through their meetings which add nothing to the nation’s wellbeing, are shamelessly driven by self-interest. Any self-respecting political leader would have quit the grouping after such a monumental snub, but it is probably asking too much from those who list “visiting Cyclone Idai” — whatever that means — as one of their achievements in 2019.

That one member of this group, Bryan Mteki, has actually rejoined Mnangagwa’s Zanu PF shows just how much of a joke this platform is. They are truly shameful, greedy and pathetic political opportunists.

Update: Police Overpower A Battalion Of 47 Machete Wielding Thugs

The group of 47 Machete Thugs under arrest

Correspondent:Police shot and injured two mobsters who allegedly led a gang of 47 men armed with machetes to raid a police base in an attempt to free an arrested colleague in Gokwe.

Khumbulani Mahlangu (25) was shot in the abdomen while Gift Chimboora (18) was shot in the legs on Wednesday.

The two suspect leaders of a Kadoma-based machete gang called Maziga allegedly arrived at Zenda Police Base in Gokwe North in two hired kombis loaded with 47 machete-wielding members intending to forcibly take away one of their members who had just been arrested.

Officials at Gokwe magistrate courts were yesterday organising a court circuit to sit for the case at Nembudziya.

Gokwe North where the incident occurred has no magistrates court and all incidents which occur in the area are normally referred to Gokwe South, more than 150km away. The 47 suspects are expected to appear before Gokwe magistrate, Mr Shortgame Musaiona facing charges of obstructing the cause of law.

Chief Supt Chishaka yesterday said the two were admitted at Gweru Provincial Hospital under police guard while their 47 accomplices were in police custody.

“Police have shot and injured two machete gang leaders and arrested other 47 members of the same machete racket which calls itself Maziga or MaBranco after they went to Zenda Police Base in two kombis where they charged at police officers who had just arrested one of their members,” said Chief Supt Chishaka.

He said the gang ignored warning shots and continued charging towards police while demanding the release of the suspect.

“The police released warning shots but they continued to charge at them. Two of the ring leaders were then shot in the abdomen and legs forcing the other members to retreat,” said Chief Supt Chishaka.

He said police managed to round up and arrest the other 47 suspects.

“Police also impounded the two kombis and recovered the machetes, knives, picks, shovels and knobkerries that the suspects were armed with,” he said.

Parliament has instituted a probe to unearth the origins of machete gangs, how they are operating, the impact of their actions and what can be done to halt their activities that have had a devastating effect on the lucrative mining sector, one of the major foreign currency earners.

The machete-wielding gangs’ criminal activities have wreaked havoc at gold mining sites across the country, causing several deaths and injuries.

Last month a gang surrounded police officers in Kadoma and macheted one of them to death.

Fugitive Murder Suspect Steals Ten Cars While On The Run.

Taboos Ndlovu

State Media|POLICE in Bulawayo have arrested a mechanic who, while on the run for allegedly killing his girlfriend’s baby, stole 10 vehicles valued at more than $660 000 for joyrides.

Taboka Ndlovu from Cowdray Park suburb allegedly killed the 19 months old baby in November last year during a scuffle with the mother.

He allegedly hit the baby with a brick after missing his unnamed girlfriend and the infant later died in hospital.

Police yesterday said Ndlovu escaped after killing the tot and went on a car-stealing spree that ended two weeks ago.

Acting Bulawayo police spokesperson Assistant Inspector Nomalanga Msebele said Ndlovu was arrested on Sunday in connection with murder and theft of cars.

“We have arrested a 25-year-old murder suspect who allegedly threw a brick and hit his girlfriend’s 19-months-old baby following a misunderstanding. The suspect has been on the police wanted list since November,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

She said a day after killing the baby, Ndlovu started stealing cars in the same suburb.

Asst Insp Msebele said the suspect would drive the stolen cars to his rural home in Gokwe, Midlands, where he would dump them when they ran out of fuel.

“Between 18 November and 28 December 2019, the accused allegedly stole 10 cars from houses in Cowdray Park suburb. He was a lone actor in these crimes. He was targeting cars that were left parked in houses without precast walls or not secured in any form. He stole five Honda Fit, a Honda CRV, a Toyota Ipsum, a Nissan Sunny, a Toyota Hiace and Toyota Noah and stole property that was in the cars. In one of the incidents, he got away with US$1 000, R1 600 which was left in the car. All the stolen cars worth $664 825 were recovered. However, some of them were missing batteries and wheels, which the suspect had stripped and sold,” said Asst Insp Msebele.

She said Ndlovu was arrested after the baby’s father saw him fixing one of the stolen cars in the suburb and alerted cops.

Asst Insp Msebele said his arrest led to the recovery of nine other vehicles.

She urged members of the public to report suspicious activities to the police.

Govt And Civil Servants In Make Or Break Wage Negotiation Meeting Today

Mthuli Ncube

State Media|Finance and Economic Development Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube, has expressed confidence that today’s meeting between Government and its employees at the National Joint Negotiating Council will be positive.

The minister said this on the sidelines of the signing of the US$10,4 million grant protocol of agreement for the Tax and Accountability Enhancement Project in Harare yesterday.

“I expect a very positive outcome from the negotiations that are currently taking place between Government and civil servants. I am sure we will a have positive outcome so that we can continue to improve the wages for civil servants.

“We appreciate the work that they do; teachers, nurses and everyone else. We always stand ready as Government to listen, to support them as they support the country and support their families,” Prof Ncube added.

Asked whether Government was ready to meet the employees’ demands that include indexing of salaries to the interbank rate, Minister Ncube said: “Well, it is part of the negotiations as you know, but we will do everything within our means as Government. I am sure we can agree on something that all parties will be happy about and we are determined to do that.”

The Apex Council, a representative body of civil servants’ unions met on Tuesday and resolved to push Government to index their salaries to the interbank rate.

At the time, the least paid Government employee earned approximately $545.

Apex Council vice secretary Mr Gibson Mushangu said they were ready to present their demands at the meeting.

“The meeting is on and we are going to present our demands as agreed during the meeting we held early this week,” Mr Mushangu said.

Civil servants got an increment last August when the Government offered them a 76 percent cost of living adjustment which resulted in the least-paid worker taking home $1 023 per month.

According to the latest statistics by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency the Poverty Datum Line for an average family of five rose by 15,7 percent last November to $3 700 from the previous month’s $3 160.

The PDL represents the cost of a given standard of living that must be attained by an individual to not be deemed poor.

Govt Signs $12m Funding Deal To Stop Funds Leaking Out Of Fraud And Corruption Infested ZIMRA

Mthuli Ncube

State Media|Government is working with its strategic partners to improve its capacity to collect revenue, use and account for it, cent-by-cent.

In one of the steps to achieve this, a $11,6 million programme to upgrade tax management and strengthen the oversight role of the Auditor-General and Parliament was signed yesterday between the Government and the African Development Bank’s (AfDB) Tax and Accountability Enhancement Project.

The agreement was signed by Finance and Economic Development Minister Professor Mthuli Ncube and AfDB country manager Mr Damoni Kitabire.

The Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra) will receive US$8,1 million for the modernisation of the tax and revenue management system while Parliament will get US$2,9 million for its oversight function with the Auditor-General getting US$0,56 million to continue support already received from AfDB.

The bank is extending a grant of US$10,4 million, with another US$1,1 million from the Government to install a new Tax and Revenue Management System (TaRMS) and strengthen oversight and accountability of public entities to be implemented by Zimra, Office of the Auditor-General and Parliament.

The programme will run until December 31, 2023.

Zimra Commissioner-General Faith Mazani said the funding would address challenges being faced by the tax collector.

“ZIMRA relies heavily on information and communications technology and automated processes to effectively and efficiently deliver one of its mandates of revenue collection. The new tax system is of critical importance given the challenges that ZIMRA is facing with the current tax management system.

“The new system will equip ZIMRA with the enhanced capacity to mobilise revenue for the Government of Zimbabwe for the benefit of the Zimbabwe population. This desired system replacement is in line with ZIMRA’s five-year Strategic Plan for 2019-2023 to modernise its ICT systems and automate manual processes. TaRMS will revolutionise tax management by bringing efficiency in the authority’s processes enhancing transparency, service delivery and accountability. It will improve self-service and voluntary compliance by providing an efficient and effective platform to address current constraints,” she said.

Acting Clerk of Parliament Ms Helen Dingane said the support from the AfDB would enhance their legislative function and oversight role.

“We are very much excited to look at the coming project which in our view will help strengthen the role of Parliament in passing legislation, improve our oversight on decisions and implementation of the programmes of the Executive and also this will assist us institutionalise the training and capacity building within Parliament,” she said.

She said Portfolio Committees on Budget, Finance and Economic Development; Public Accounts; Mines and Minerals Development; Women Affairs, Gender and Small to Medium Enterprises; Energy and Power Development; Industry and Commerce; and Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement will benefit from the project.

“We are also happy that this programme will also be assisting advocacy groups within Parliament, that is the African Parliamentarians Network Against Corruption and the Zimbabwe Women Parliamentary Caucus. The key activities under parliament will include training on illicit financial outflows and domestic resource mobilisation,” Mrs Dingane said.

Acting Auditor-General Ms Rheah Kujinga said previous support from the AfDB had gone a long way in assisting them fulfil their mandate.

“Through your support, we have been able to acquire our ICT equipment and as the Office of the Auditor-General and the supreme audit body in the country, we have been able to professionalise and the AfDB has been part of this. In addition, the office has been able to meet the statutory obligation of producing the annual report also through your support.

“The new grant will go a long way in strengthening the human and organisational effectiveness of the organisation and ultimately achieving its mission of improving transparency, accountability and good governance,” Ms Kujinga said.

Minister Ncube said the project was in line with the President’s vision of attaining an upper middle income economy by 2030.

“The President of Zimbabwe, Cde Mnangagwa is rallying all Zimbabweans to rigorously and diligently work towards attainment of the country’s Vision 2030 to transform Zimbabwe into an upper middle income economy by 2030,” Minister Ncube said.

“Attainment of the vision is underpinned by various governance, economic and administrative reforms being implemented by Government. The project is expected to strengthen the transparency and accountability oversight mandates of the three institutions in line with the Transitional Stabilisation Programme, which prioritises fiscal consolidation, economic stabilisation and inclusive growth as well as employment creation.”

He added that the support from the AfDB had come at the appropriate time when the country’s is focusing on promoting good governance.

“To this end, the expected outcome is to enhance tax compliancy and efficiency, as well as, strengthen public accountability which will be achieved through installation and functionality of new Tax and Revenue Management System and improved capacity of the oversight function of Parliament,” he said.

The Minister also thanked AfDB for support it has rendered to Government in various sectors of the economy.

“The Bank has been supporting the Government of Zimbabwe on several projects in various sectors of the economy,” he said.

“The beneficiaries here today have also received support under the Capacity Building for Public Finance and Economic Management and Strengthening Institutions of Transparency and Accountability Projects.

“This support strengthened the capacity of these key institutions in various areas of economic and public financial management.”

In his remarks Mr Kitabire said Zimbabwe had the potential to come out of its current economic challenges.

“Zimbabwe has all the potential to recover from its present challenges, given the reforms efforts that the Government is currently pursuing,” Mr Kitabire said.

“We are aware that tax administration and related reforms are at the core of this recovery and as a Bank we have been and will continue to support the initiatives in this effort. As your bank, we will stand with you and support you as you endeavour to revive the economy with progressive market-oriented policies.”

He added: “Though the amount is modest, it will go a long way to support the much-needed digitisation of the tax administration system in Zimbabwe in addition to strengthening the role of Parliament and enhancing the capacity of the Office of the Auditor General.”

Govt Concedes To Schools Increasing Boarding Fees – “Boarding Fees Involves Groceries. The Ministry Does Not Own A Shop.”

Acting Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Professor Amon Murwira

Own Correspondent|Acting Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Professor Amon Murwira says boarding schools will be allowed to increase boarding fees and levies, provided just 20 percent of parents agree and the proposal is approved by the ministry.

Disciplinary action will be taken against public schools that charge fees in foreign currency or increase tuition fees. Prof Murwira said the Government had no control over boarding fees and levies as they were open to market forces.

“The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education would like to confirm that there will be no tuition fee increases in public schools. Provincial education directors, district schools inspectors and heads of public schools should stand guided by the circular to the same effect which has been dispatched to them. Anyone found transgressing this directive will face disciplinary action.

“Government has also learnt that some private schools are charging directly or indirectly in forex. Responsible authorities of such schools are warned that they risk de-registration of such schools,” he said.

“Boarding fees and food fees are subject to market forces, therefore, that one will be charged reasonably. They have been given guidelines on how to proceed with boarding fees.”

“Boarding fees involves groceries. The ministry does not own a shop and therefore schools are subjected to expenses that occur on the market. This is why there has to be a meeting among the parents which determines the level of boarding fees.

“Government is in control of the tuition fees because that is the service we give,” he said.

The Ministry’s Secretary Mrs Tumisang Thabela said a circular that stipulated the requirements for schools to increase boarding fees was sent to all schools.

“A circular was sent to all schools stipulating how parents meet, look at their expenses and their surroundings, and agree on a fee they think can feed their children and send it to the ministry for approval.

“That circular stipulates that they have to send their audited statements so we are assured that money has been used correctly. They (schools) have to show us they had a parent assembly where more than 20 percent were attending that meeting.

“It has to show us that register of those parents is attached and is authentic. Once our team is convinced that it is a fair request, approval is done,” she said.

Son Watches Mom Having S*x With Boyfriend

This is weird!

Taking voyeurism to an unprecedented level, a 24-year-old man from Bulawayo’s Thorngrove suburb allegedly sneaked into his mother’s bedroom to watch her while she was having sex with her partner.

The pair, even after noticing him, allegedly continued being intimate as if he wasn’t there.

A court heard that Algernon Antony (24) watched his mother Tiffany Antony (43) while she was naked between the sheets enjoying herself with her lover.

She took to the stand and said: “Your Worship, I was with my boyfriend in my bedroom then Algernon came into my bedroom while was having sex with my partner.”

“I tried to tell him to move away but he could not listen to me. He kept watching us for several minutes,” she said.

She added: “When I asked him why he was doing that he said there is nothing that I would do to him and slammed the door in my face.”
As if that was not enough the court heard that when his mother was bathing Algernon peeped through the window.

“When I was bathing last week, I noticed him watching me through the window, I then confronted him, but he once again asked what I would do to him,” she said.

Seeing the escalation of the strange behaviour of her offspring, Tiffany had no choice but to report the matter at Mzilikazi Police Station, leading to the arrest of Algernon.

He appeared in court before magistrate Lizwe Jamela at Tredgold Magistrates Court facing Criminal insult charge.
He pleaded guilty.

“Your Worship, I’m sorry about what I did. I was going to the bathroom and I didn’t know she was sleeping with somebody. I just bumped into them and I watched them in shock and disbelief. It wasn’t my intention to watch her having sex with her lover.”

About peeping through the bathroom window he said: “It was a coincidence that when I peeped through the window she was inside bathing. I’m really sorry to my mum for that.”

Magistrate remanded Algernon out of custody to next week on Wednesday for sentencing.B-Metro

Underwear Gift Exposes Senior ZRP Cop’s Secret Affair With Married Junior

A SENIOR police officer based at Drill Hall’s Traffic Section in Bulawayo has been caught behind enemy lines following revelations that he was allegedly “drilling” his married junior in exchange for favours at work.

The also married Inspector Jamezweni Masuku is accused of being involved in a six months long steamy relationship with his wedded subordinate Constable Mejury Gwangwava.

The illicit relationship was discovered by Gwangwava’s husband, Ebony Nyoni after he stumbled on love messages and audio recordings of the two adulterers.

During their alleged extra-marital affair, Masuku (40), probably as a way of showing his affection towards his married subordinate, was pampering her with t-shirts which are usually reserved for senior members in the police force.

In exchange, among other things, Gwangwava bought her superior-cum lover half a dozen of male mini briefs.

After their love boat was capsized by Gwangwava’s husband, the police supremo reportedly confessed that he was indeed exploring the hidden goodies of his married workmate.

After being confronted he burnt five of the undergarments and brazenly handed over the remaining one to Nyoni because he had never donned it.

Gwangwava openly confirmed the adulterous relationship to
B-Metro , saying she was madly in love with her boss before the illicit relationship was discovered by her husband.
Shockingly, she said she had lost count of the occasions the senior cop had poked her.

“It’s true that I have been involved in an extra-marital relationship with Inspector Masuku for the past six months until it was discovered by husband (Ebony) through text messages and audio recordings which we were exchanging.

“As a way of showing my undying love for him I bought him six undergarments. I also did it so as to gain favours like being assigned to do VID duties and getting time off duty. I slept with Inspector Masuku countless times and I regret doing it.

“I know that I am not the only female constable that Inspector Masuku was seeing,” said a remorseful Gwangwava while pleading with this publication not to publish their names.

Contacted for a comment a hostile Inspector Masuku could neither confirm nor deny his alleged adulterous relationship with his junior.

“You want to talk to me and why are you doing so over the phone? If you got an issue come let’s meet at the office,” he said before he hung up his mobile phone.

After this reporter refused to go to his office, he later sent messages via WhatsApp saying: “ . . . I don’t know the full facts of the allegations you are talking about . . . be specific and you will get the answers you need”.

Inspector Masuku thought of playing a hide and seek game with this publication not knowing that it is in possession of audio recordings of him acknowledging that he strayed into Nyoni’s “private property”
A devastated Nyoni said he started suspecting his wife’s infidelity in June last year until he discovered it two weeks ago.

“I started suspecting mid last year after we had some problems in our marriage. I could tell all that because of my wife’s actions.

Two weeks ago, I stumbled on love messages in her phone in which she was exchanging with her boss Inspector Masuku.

“When I threatened to divorce her that is when she confessed that she was having an affair with her superior. Sometime last year, they once used my car to go to a football match at Barbourfields Stadium,” said a heartbroken Nyoni.

Nyoni demanded R15 000 from Insp Masuku as compensation for bedding his wife.
“So far he has only given me R5 000. I doubt if I’m going to get the balance as I’m now continuously being threatened by several people,” he said.

In an undercover interview on Friday last week, Inspector Masuku’s wife, Assistant Inspector Constance Mugomeza-Masuku who is stationed at Entumbane Police Station’s community relations department also confirmed that her husband was a “womaniser”.

“Such findings are not new to me. Masuku is a womaniser. Five years ago, he was transferred from Harare after it was discovered that he was in love with someone’s wife.B-Metro

ZIMSEC Official In Court For Leaking Exam Paper

A Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) clerk yesterday appeared in court on allegations of smuggling a copy of the October-November Economics Paper 3 from the printing press and selling it.

Edisendi Muzira (54), who is out of custody on $300 bail, was facing criminal abuse of duty charges when he appeared before Harare magistrate Mr Richard Ramaboa.

Mr Ramaboa adjourned the matter to January 14 for trial after the State said it had amended the charges.

The court heard that sometime in October 2019, Muzira was assigned to the Norton Printing Press and his duties included packaging of printed October-November 2019 session O and A Level examination papers.

It is alleged that during that period, Muzira smuggled an October-November 2019 Economics examination Paper 3 which was due to be sat for on November 28.

On October 24, 2019, Muzira’s son, who is a dropout A-level student at Speciss College, sold the paper for US$50.

“It is alleged that Muzira’s son also photographed the examination question paper and used his WhatsApp platform to send a soft copy to Nigel Dengeza in Chitungwiza after he was paid a fee.”

The court heard that the exam paper went viral in most parts of the country, and was accessed by many candidates.

Some candidates, who had accessed the leaked paper were arrested at Gebuza High School in Hwange after a teacher intercepted it before the examination time and were subsequently sent to Hwange Magistrate Court for prosecution.

Zimsec confirmed that the recovered examination paper which Muzira sold was the same as the original paper.State media

Musona Keen To Stay In Belgium

ZIMBABWE national football team captain Knowledge Musona, who has been frozen out of competitive football by his struggling Belgian club Anderlecht, has joined rivals KAS Eupen on trial.

The 29-year-old, who had been linked with a move back to South Africa after Absa Premiership giants Mamelodi Sundowns expressed interest, is keen to stay in Europe.

Musona signed a four-year contract with Anderlecht which runs until June 2022.

However, the forward has been earmarked for disposal this January window after he was deemed excess baggage.

The Warriors skipper joined KAS Eupen in their training camp currently underway in Doha, Qatar, on Wednesday with the hope of impressing the 13th placed club and probably landing a contract.

This is a possible way out for Musona who is desperate to revive his playing career after spending close to a year without kicking a ball for Anderlecht. KAS Eupen confirmed yesterday that the Aces Youth Soccer Academy alumnus is trying his luck with them during their training camp.

“Zimbabwean international Knowledge Musona joins KAS Eupen’s training camp at the Aspire Academy. The 29-year-old offensive midfielder and attacker of RSC Anderlecht arrived in Doha on Wednesday evening and will be tested at KAS Eupen.

“As a national player of Zimbabwe, Knowledge Musona has scored 19 goals in 27 international matches. In the Jupiler Pro League, he played 112 matches for KV Oostende, scoring 41 goals and 18 Assists,” the club posted on their website yesterday.

Musona has not featured in any of the competitive matches in Belgium this season with 21 league games played now.

This would probably rank as the worst phase in his career as he has often complained that Anderlecht shut the door on him without giving him the chance to prove himself.

The Zimbabwean arrived at Anderlecht with a reputation in 2018 following a decent career with local rivals Oostende, where he netted 41 goals and made 18 assists for the side during his three-year stint.

But his move to Anderlecht was characterised by a chronic lack of game-time which left his career at the crossroads, considering his advancing age.

He only played 10 games for Anderlecht since he joined them almost two years ago, scoring once and providing two assists.

Musona had to be loaned out to Lokeren to get more game-time last season where he played just six league games and scored only one goal.

Sadly, the club got relegated and as was expected his return to Anderlecht has been nightmarish.

He had been linked with a move back to South Africa with Sundowns but his South African agent, Mike Makaab, has always maintained that there was plenty of interest in Belgium.

“I will be travelling to Belgium this month to sit down with Anderlecht to discuss the way forward,” Makaab told the South African media early this week.

“Knowledge needs to be playing, and we are going to look for a way to get him out so he can do that.

“There has been plenty of interest in Belgium, but it all depends on what happens with Anderlecht.

We want to get him out, but he is a professional and if they say no, then he will see out his contract and he will keep working hard and wait things out.”

Still, Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane has not hidden his admiration for the Zimbabwean skipper, who won the Absa Premiership Golden Boot in 2011 while playing for rivals Kaizer Chiefs.State media

MaShurugwi Invade Police Camp

Farai Dziva|
A group of fifty machete-wielding notorious MaShurugwi stormed a Gokwe North police base intending to free their arrested colleagues on Tuesday.

Police responded by firing live ammunition at the group and managed to subdue the rowdy group after some of them were injured.

The attempted invasion of the police station came after police had arrested nine illegal gold panners on charges of robbing 80kg of gold ore from a local miner the previous day.

The gang had hired two kombis in Kadoma to take them to Zenda, almost 300km away, where their colleagues had been detained.

The attack happened before police could transfer the nine to Gokwe North’s Nembudziya Police Station.

After the gang had been subdued, the injured were ferried to Nembudziya and Gweru General hospitals where they are admitted under police guard, while their hired kombis were impounded together with a Toyota Wish used by their colleagues.

Senior ZESA Chefs Face The Chop

By A Correspondent- ZESA is set to rebundle its units again in a bid to cut costs, Business Times reports.

ZESA 14 years ago branched its units into 4, (ZETDC), ZPC, Powertel Communications and Zesa Enterprises each with its own executives and board of directors.

However, due to the government’s new thrust to have a leaner structure, ZESA is now amalgamating those 4 units into one again which will result in executives from some of those units losing their jobs.

According to Business Times:

The current restructuring at Zesa, however, will entail nonrenewal of contracts for some top executives whose roles will be deemed redundant. Information gathered shows that former acting chief executive Patrick Chivaura’s contract will not be renewed under the current move.

ZESA is battling power generation issues since May 2019.

Bride To Be Humiliated, As Groom Vanishes From Wedding Venue

By A Correspondent- Charity Jonga learnt of her partner’s failure to turn up for the vows after taking her position before the marriage officer and guests at Florence Chisholm Gardens in Avondale.

Jonga, a teacher by profession, was forced by her bride maids to delete, in protest, contacts of her husband only identified as Justin.

“I was really disappointed and had to sleep over at one of my bride maids’ home that day,” said Jonga.

“Who told you about this? It’s my privacy and I do not think my mother would be happy if this story is published.

“My bride maids deleted my husband’s contact numbers but I will check for it when I get home so that you will get the truth from him,” said Jonga.

H-Metro visited Jonga’s parents at their New Marlborough home where her mother Viola Masiyiwa was still to come to terms with the incident she described as unbearable considering that the groom paid the bride prize.

“Zvakaoma mwanangu,” said Masiyiwa soon after the writer introduced himself.

“Charity was really disturbed that she needs counselling. She slept at her best friend’s house on the day and her aunt got time with her too.

“Today my young sister took her to Lake Chivero for refreshing.

“The groom’s family is still to communicate with us over the issue and I am sure we will have a dialogue soon.

“He paid lobola and everything looked good before the day.

“Preparations have been going well and I do not know why they failed to show up last minute,” said Masiyiwa while her husband looked on.

Justin, based in Marondera, could not be reached for comment from 22nd December 2019 until the time of going to press to give his side of the story.

The marriage officer who was supposed to solemnize the marriage was reported to have send a message a day before forcing the families to engage another one who spent the day waiting for the groom to show up.

“I was called last hour to solemnize the marriage after the one expected to do the work indicated his inability to be on time,” said the marriage officer (name supplied).

“It was so sad and I am still to know the reason why the groom failed to show up,” he said.

However, impeccable sources told H-Metro that the groom was forced by his in-laws into preparing the wedding soon after paying lobola.

“Ambuya vakambunyikidza mukuwasha kuti achate iye asati agadzirira saka akavadzidzisa chidzidzo chikuru kuti roora ipfuma yavakagamuchira nekuzivana kwavakaita kwete muchato wezuva rimwe chete,” said the source.

Canada Based Tawanda “The Cheating Hubby” Shuts The Internet

By A Correspondent| A Canada based man only identified as “Tawanda,” had added to his CV, the reputation of literally shutting down the social networking website, Facebook on Thursday after he was caught by his wife and filmed on LIVE camera while with a girlfriend.

Tawanda, who was at the time busy clubbing and in the late hours wth his side chick literally froze into a stone when his wife entered the pub and went straight after him.

The location of the pub could not be established at the time of writing.

ZimEye reveals how Tawanda was exposed for potentially endangering his sickly child he deserted in order to spend pleasure time with his newly found “yellow bone”.

The girlfriend is also questioned and insulted by Tawanda’s wife who reveals that the duo had only just met on the internet.

Charged Tawanda’s wife who at the same time called her husband names

She then asks, “You are shocked [about] what happened, right? ” ” You are cheating on me; why are you cheating on me?,” she continues. During the heated confrontation, a pub security man draws near and compels the three (3) to leave the building so to finish their conversation outside.

News readers reacted differently to the development as others said it was worth the while to expose Tawanda.

One Privilege Privy however said, “Stop calling her bi**h, she is calm, polite and says she didn’t know he was married but you go on to abuse her. the real bi**h is your husband. What do the other woman’s relationships have to do with you? Ndoopawairasa. nxa”

Parents blamed for contributing to child marriage statistics

By Cheriel Dzobo| A local community based organisation in Chipinge, the Platform for Youth and Community Development (PYCD) has intervened on a case of forced marriage involving a 14 year old girl who had been married off to a 17 year old herd boy lover.

According to PYCD, on the 1st of January 2020, the girl in question (name withheld) was waylaid into being cosy by her 17 year old boyfriend who is working as a herd boy in Vheneka village of ward 27 in Chipinge South constituency.

The two ran out of luck when the father of the teenager girl got wind of the relationship and took a drastic action, turning their merry- making into a nightmare when the father of the girl ,a Mr Chauke sent her daughter packing to the Matikiti family to force a marriage of the two.

What makes the case a serious concern for PYCD, are the circumstances around it.

“The 17 year old boy works as a herd boy at Matikiti family in Vheneka while the girl is a school dropout who is supposed to be in form 2 at Vheneka Sec School. They are minors unable to start a responsible family,” said PYCD in a statement.

After getting wind of the matter, PYCD intervened and engaged both concerned parents including the minors involved.

“The matter which had to involve the police at Chisumbanje to calm emotions is now firmly in the hands of the organisation who are offering counselling services,” noted PYCD.

Over 700 000 People Went Through Beitbridge Border During The Festive

A total of 708 179 people passed through Beitbridge Border Post during the just ended festive season, after authorities put in place border efficiency and management systems that facilitated ease of movement.

Official figures from the Department of Immigration show that a total of 375 956 travellers inclusive of returning residents and tourists entered the country from South Africa between in December 5 last year and last Sunday.

During the same period 332 223 people travelled to South Africa via the border post, which is the country’s and SADC’s busiest inland port of entry.

The assistant regional immigration officer in charge of Beitbridge, Mr Nqobile Ncube said they cleared 24 000 people during peak periods and 14 000 off peak daily.

These, he said was inclusive of both entries and departures.

The Herald understands that the surge in entries through Beitbridge in the last three years is a result of the confidence travellers have in the level of efficiency and organisation amongst border authorities.

“Though the movement of travellers increased on the arrivals side, we had the situation under control. We employed the border efficiency management system were harmonised operation with local and South Africans to ensure that travellers spent the shortest possible time at the border.

“A turnaround plan has been successfully implemented and it brought on board all stakeholders including Traffic sections from ZRP and Beitbridge Municipality to avoid the problem of traffic jams in Beitbridge town,” said Mr Ncube.

He said some of the measures employed to ease the flow of traffic include the re-organisation of the border, where traffic is separated into pedestrians, motorists, buses, commercial and visitors.

He said they had deployed adequate staff to deal with the increase in human and vehicular traffic during the festive season.

The official said though they had witnessed an upsurge in South Africa bound traffic between January 4 and 6 the situation was returning to normalcy.

“Manpower deployments remain the same as in Pre-Christmas period with all officers on hand and all forms of off and leave days canceled,” said Mr Ncube.

“You will also note that Beitbridge is adequately staffed as per the Departmental Detailed Establishment Table.

“However, the major challenge was people leaving en-mass at the same time between January 4 and 6 but we managed to handle increased levels working in conjunction with our South African counterparts.

“Major movement is over and traffic flows are almost back to normal but we are gearing up for the back to school traffic as both countries’ schools seem to be opening same week”.

He urged people to travel well ahead of the school’s opening to prevent delays and to ensure they have the correct documentation.

He said they had also deployed a Regional Compliance and Enforcement unit on the ground to curb issues of rent-seeking, child smuggling, and border jumping.

Sanctions Must Remain Until ZANU PF Reforms

By Innocent Tapo|Talk has been going on for almost 15 years as to whether targeted sanctions imposed on the Zanu PF officials must be lifted or not. The sanctions must stay as a reminder to President Emmerson Mnagagwa that the international community is still concerned about reforms in Zimbabwe.

In the aftermath of the 2008 general elections, if there were no European Union and United States-imposed sanctions, the then Zanu PF government could have resisted the formation of a government of national unity (GNU).

But with the election results of the June 2008 presidential run-off dismissed by both the Africa Union and Sadc as not free and fair, Zanu PF agreed to form an uneasy GNU. So sanctions really worked and can still work.

The present situation where few people are not allowed to go to the United States or Europe to shop, wine and dine is meant to make these people use their influence to implement the much-needed reforms at home.

If they want these sanctions removed, let them open up democratic space in the country. There is need for real reforms, not petty ones.

We have a new Constitution, but our laws and statutes have not been realigned to it, making it ineffective.
Opposition parties are still complaining that the playing field is tilted in Zanu PF’s favour.

State security agents are allegedly dabbling in politics in favour of Zanu PF, negating or compromising their constitutional duties.

The argument that sanctions have hurt our economy sounds comic because even before the Western sanctions were imposed, our economy was going downhill.

As long as human rights abuses persist and reforms remain far-fetched, sanctions must remain in place.

Zimbabwe Has No Intentions Of Attacking US, And Refutes Social Media Rumours

BY DR MASIMBA MAVAZA| The information circulating in some foreign media outlets and in some tweets masquerading as Cde Victor Matemadanda’s twitter handle that Zimbabwe may be forced to intervene in the middle east if United States does not retreat from Iran is completely unfounded and false, Comrade Victor Matemadanda laughed this off as fake news.

“This is misinformation in a twitter purporting to be breaking news from ZBC. It alleged that Cde Matemadanda the deputy minister of defence has issued a chilling statement to America that “If America does not withdraw from Iran, Zimbabwe will be forced to inteverne to remove America by force.”

A number of online media outlets distributed the information with the headline ” Matemadanda warns America.” According to their information, Matemadanda has issued this warning through the national broadcaster the ZBC.

Cde Victor Matemadanda dismissed this as fake news.—Cde Victor Matemadanda asks the social media handlers to refrain from disseminating manipulative false information about the activities in the Middle East. Zimbabwe has not issued any official statement. In any case such information is issued by the ministry of information or by the President himself. There are people who are bent to tarnish the image of Zimbabwe. The information in the above article is false. The authors of the article have misinformed readers in a bid to create a bad relationship between Zimbabwe and America. We refute information about America’s alleged involvement in Iran; this has nothing to do with Zimbabwe.

Cde Victor Matemadanda urged social media representatives who have published the manipulative material of the above-mentioned sources to refute it, and, in the future to verify their rubbish before publishing it. Cde Matemadanda will report to the police to serve notice to persons who are posting inflammatory messages on social media that incited communal hatred and international crisis. Zimbabwe has its own way of doing things and it will never use twitter to communicate with other countries.

While Zimbabwe is not comfortable with the behaviour of America which is bullish it has not commented on the current behaviour. Police in Zimbabwe must register against social media lunatics who ca be identified where they have posted an inflammatory post on social media. The said post is meant to incite tension which may result /resulting in the breach of public peace and order, promoting enmity between nations. Zimbabwe is a peaceful nation and it does not interfere in areas which are not in its interest. Action against miscreants spreading communal hatred on social media is being mooted in a major way Fake news, or fabricated content deceptively presented as real news, has garnered a lot of interest and it becomes dangerous daily.

Although hardly a new phenomenon, the global nature of the web-based information environment allows purveyors of all sorts of falsehoods and misinformation to make an international impact. As a result, we talk of fake news and its impact in the whole world.

Even though the rise of fake news about Zimbabwe in recent months is undeniable, its impact is a different story. It is true that fake news, often highly partisan, gives the opposition a notch higher in their public standing. There is certainly evidence of fake news stories getting a lot of traction on social media, at times even outperforming actual news stories. But talking about the current situation in the Middle East is very sensitive and irresponsible for anyone to utter such rubbish. We must be patriotic Zimbabweans who love their country. And the persuasive effects of these stories have very negative effects on the country.

The real impact of the growing interest in fake news has been the realization that the public might not be well-equipped to separate quality information from false information. In fact, a majority of Zimbabweans are confident that they can spot fake news while the same cannot be said about President Trump. It can be said that Zimbabweans too were confident they could spot, and ignore, fake news online. The reality, however, is that it might be more difficult than people think.

The problem will only get worse without proper action as more people get their news online and politics becomes more tribal and polarized. Those who post fake news should have limits on their jokes. It stops to be a joke once it lacks compassion.

Cde Victor Matemadanda is a seasoned politician and will never utter such information, he is not even a spokesperson of the government and he knows what words to say and when to say them.

Trump Explains Why No American Was Killed In Iranian Bombardment

Own Correspondent|US President Donald Trump has credited careful steps set up by American soldiers for the absence of setbacks from an Iranian rocket assault.

Zim Police Issue Statement On Rangers Killed By Zambian Poachers In Kariba.

Zimparks

ZRP issues statement on Zimparks Rangers: Poacher killers are Zambians. Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) national spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi told New Ziana that Zambian authorities were assisting with the investigations into the murder of the rangers.

Police on Wednesday said suspects in the case of two Zimbabwe National Parks and Wildlife Authority rangers who were killed and thrown into Lake Kariba are Zambians.

“The information we have is that these rangers had arrested some Zambians, so the suspects are Zambians. We would like to thank Zambian authorities who are also cooperating with their Zimbabweans in conducting the investigations,” he said.

Nyathi said post-mortems of the rangers had since been conducted. “The bodies have been identified by their next of kin; that of Mabharani Chidhumo and also that of Timothy Tembo. We want to pass our condolences to the Tembo and Chidumo families,” he said.

“I can confirm that a post-mortem was done yesterday (Tuesday); the bodies were retrieved from the water on Monday. We are now conducting investigations as the ZRP and we are treating this case as a murder case. We have also recovered the boat from the Zambian side and it has some damages which are also part of these investigations,” he said.

Police said the rangers were three when they arrested the poachers but only two went missing. “It’s not clear what happened for the other one to remain behind when the other two went missing. So this is also part of our investigations,” he said.

Spanish La Liga Threatens To Get Philip Chiyangwa Arrested

La Liga threatens to take ex-Zifa boss Chiyangwa to police

La Liga have expressed their disappointed following revelations that ex-Zifa president Philip Chiyangwa misused the goods they donated for football development.

Chiyangwa is accused by Zifa of converting 1 080 soccer balls meant to kick-start a grassroots soccer development project in the country to his personal use.

La Liga representative in Africa Enrique Suay told NewsDay that they are ready to take legal action against Chiyangwa

“As La Liga we are concerned about this situation,” Suay said. “The purpose of the donated balls was to support the implementation of football developing projects in Zimbabwe which is something we really want to do.

“I say this in line with our objective to grow football at large.

“La Liga can confirm that a number of soccer balls were donated to Zifa in April 2018, for the development of the football community in Zimbabwe through the implementation of the #PassTheBall project.

“We are extremely disappointed with the recent allegations that have risen in regard to this donation and condemn such actions.

“If this donation ended up for other purposes, it would put us in a very unpleasant position as our intentions were completely different. At this stage we are communicating with Zifa in order to get more information on the topic.

Villa Fans Blast Nakamba Again After Another Lacklustre Performance Against Leicester City

Aston Villa midfielder Marvelous Nakamba was given a starting place against Leicester City yesterday.

Marvelous Nakamba of Aston Villa runs with the ball under pressure from Josh Onomah of Fulham during the FA Cup Third Round match between Fulham FC and Aston Villa at Craven Cottage on...

Aston Villa fans have laid into Marvelous Nakamba after his latest performance against Leicester City.

Villa managed to pick up a credible 1-1 draw with Leicester last night in the first-leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.

Villa put in a solid defensive performance, as they gave themselves a good chance of making it through to Wembley.

Many of Dean Smith’s side’s players earned praise for their efforts against Leicester yesterday.

However, Villa fans have slated Nakamba, and there are serious concerns over whether he has enough quality to play for them now.

Some of the comments from the fans.

Jack Cudworth@JackCudworth: Think Nakamba has been our worst signing of the summer. Horrendous touch, can’t pass but has a game every now again where he looks like a brick wall

Kal-AVFC@jkalra14 · 15h: Douglas Luiz is 21 years old. It’s his first season in England. He’s playing in a newly promoted team vs better, established, top flight players every game. Give the lad a break ffs. We’re lucky to have him!

Jon Sims@JonathanSimssi1: Our worse player was Nakamba. Poor in his distribution. But that being said noone can be unhappy with the result tonight, considering our injury list. Well done

Adrian Dent@dentfineart: As a Villa fan….thought we set up very well tonight. Nakamba a liability….should have been subbed after 20 mins

Jason Canham@jcanham1986: Marvelous Nakamba has the most ironic name in football. Just not good enough.

n_hughes@Azzajak: Luiz is a quality player, poor mistake but still young. Midfield struggled at times but constantly under pressure with few out balls. Not sure on Nakamba though makes far too many errors.

Carl James@CarlKynaston: Nakamba looks scared of the ball, he tries to get it out of his feet as quickly as possible which usually results in sloppy passes. Luiz isn’t consistent enough, we need someone with quality in midfield who will grab the ball and look for that through ball and we need a striker!

James@Shead___Remember when Nakamba was winning everything, controlling the midfield, everyone had Zimbabwe flags in their name. Now the guy can’t make a 5 yard pass. Shame.

Nakamba’s place in Villa’s first-team could actually come under threat, as Smith has already strengthened his midfield in January.

Villa snapped up Danny Drinkwater, and it could be that the Chelsea loanee replaces Nakamba in the claret and blues’ starting line-up, unless the Zimbabwean international improves.

Munashe Charlene Ncube, 24, of Damofalls allegedly bedded the 16 men and her husband to make them 17.

She also spent three days with a boyfriend when her husband was out on duty during Christmas holiday.

Ncube has since gone into hiding after jumping over the precast wall after her husband Erkridice Makomo leaked chats revealing unprotected sexcapades, sleep overs and nude images sent to boyfriends.
H-Metro is in possession of pictures of the alleged boyfriends and other graphic photos of the lady.

Makomo is bitter, from information in the chats, that Ncube had been denying him conjugal rights saying she had stomach cramps and was even spoiling her boyfriends with goodies as well as fuel for their meets.

Makomo says he has been insulted over the phone by some boyfriends after he took his wife’s phone.

They have been married for the past four years.
“I got the shock of my life to see chats of over 16 boyfriends some of which are hidden in GB WhatsApp version.

“I also found out that in December last year she went to sleep at one of the boyfriends named Kudakwashe Masoka’s place during the Christmas period while I was out working for three days.

“She no longer wanted to have sex with me and she gave all sorts of silly excuses achiti ane mudumbu.

“Ndaimupa mari iye achinotengera petrol ma boyfriends nekudya ne zvikomba zvake mari yandaishandira,” he said.

Makomo said Ncube stole his US$40 and he suspected from the chats that she is now staying with Kudakwashe.

He said he took his estranged wife Munashe to a nursing school and recently bought a brand new stove and a refrigerator worth ZW$14900 for their household.

He would also give her money which she spent on boyfriends buying them fuel.

Another alleged boyfriend named Simbarashe called on Munashe’s mobile phone which is in possession of the husband and hurled insults at Makomo.

“Iwe, ndikuda kutaura na Munashe, ukutaura zvekuti mukadzi wako ko mukadzi wako haataurwe naye kuti zviite sei?
“Ndikuda kutaura nemukadzi wako kwete nemi, mupei phone,” said Gwese.
Makomo further explained his ordeal saying they had not sired a child for the four years they have lived together with his wife.

“I would come back after two days and find dirty dishes and when I ask her she would say siyanai ne zvinhu zvemu kitchen.

“There is a Doctor in Norton named Obed whom she is also flirting with and this guy had been asking for sex from my wife,” he said showing this publication the chats.

Makomo and his uncle have since created a WhatsApp group including the 16 boyfriends to shame his wife and the boyfriends have been sharing moments they had with Munashe.

H-Metro caught up with one of the boyfriends in Norton, Ranganai Forichi who said he met Munashe in September last year.

“Ndakamuona akadhakawa ndikamutengera mvura pandai taura naye akati ndiri single mother ndikabva ndaita attack.

How Zimbabwe’s New Parliament Symbolises China’s Chequebook Diplomacy Approach To Africa

With China’s help, a new city is taking shape on the outskirts of Zimbabwe’s capital Harare, as Beijing deepens its influence in Africa.

A US$140 million six-storey parliament building being constructed on Mount Hampden, about 18km (11 miles) northwest of Harare, is the linchpin of a move by the southern African country to ease congestion in the crowded capital.

Sitting on the top of a hill, the imposing circular complex being erected by China’s Shanghai Construction Group is fully paid by Beijing, which regards the gesture as a donation.

The 33,000 square metre (355,209 square foot) complex will replace the current 100-seat, colonial-era building which Zimbabwean officials consider too small for the country’s 350 legislators.

Besides the parliament, the Zimbabwean government also plans to relocate some of its administrative units, including its judiciary and executive branches, to the site, where a state house and official residences for the speaker of the House of Assembly and president of the Senate also will be built.

The new city will also become home to the country’s reserve bank, upmarket suburbs, hotels and shopping malls.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has made three visits to the site since its groundbreaking last year. During his latest visit on November 27, Mnangagwa expressed appreciation to China for the donation.

“The building is important in the decolonisation of Zimbabwe,” he said. It is expected to be completed by March 2021.

Paying for the construction of grandiose symbols of the state, such as presidential palaces and parliamentary buildings, through grants or interest-free loans, has been one of Beijing’s major diplomatic strategies on the continent.

When China first started establishing diplomatic relations with Africa between the 1950s and 1970s, it used offers of financial help and interest-free loans and sent over medical teams to endear itself to African countries.

In return, those nations helped Beijing secure a seat on the United Nations Security Council in 1971. Until then the seat had been occupied by the Republic of China government seated in Taiwan.

But it was the construction of the Tanzania-Zambia Railway (Tazara), Beijing’s most ambitious and expensive project, that did the most to boost China’s political capital on the continent.

The railway, which was built between 1970 and 1975 for US$500 million via an interest-free loan to be repaid over 30 years, necessitated the deployment of 25,000 Chinese workers. Once completed, the line stretched almost 1,870km from Dar es Salaam Port to the Zambian town of Kapiri Mposhi, where the country’s coal mines are situated.

Beijing has since funded several projects, including soccer stadiums, in nations such as Cameroon, Mozambique, Malawi, Ghana, Angola and Zambia. It has also paid for parliamentary buildings in the Republic of Congo, Lesotho, Mozambique and Sierra Leone. Further, China has gifted presidential palaces to countries such as Togo, Sudan, Burundi and Guinea-Bissau.

The trend has picked up recently with Beijing bankrolling the building of the US$200 million African Union headquarters in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa.

Also, last year, Beijing said it would fund the building of the new headquarters for the Economic Community of West African States in Abuja, Nigeria, for US$31.6 million.

Meanwhile, China is building a US$58 million parliamentary complex in the Republic of Congo and rebuilding the burnt parliament in Gabon.

Two weeks ago, Zambia announced that China has agreed to fund construction of a new international conference centre that will be used to host the African Union Heads of State Summit in 2022.

During the 2018 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation in Beijing, Chinese President Xi Jinping pledged to extend US$60 billion in financing to Africa over three years.

That will include US$15 billion in grants, interest-free loans and concessional loans, US$20 billion in credit lines, the setting up of a US$10 billion special fund for development financing and a US$5 billion special fund for financing imports from Africa.

China is the continent’s largest bilateral lender, pouring billions of dollars into African countries for the building of motorways, dams and railways under the Belt and Road Initiative, the multibillion-dollar plan to link Asian and European economies to a China-centred trading network.

China advanced more than US$143 billion between 2000 and 2017, according to figures from the China Africa Research Initiative at the Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies in Washington. Chinese aid to Africa stood at US$29.4 billion between 2003 and 2017, the figures showed.

Dr Obert Hodzi, an international relations scholar at the University of Liverpool, said these infrastructure “gifts” were meant to show China’s benevolence, its willingness to share its prosperity with other developing countries and its sacrificial giving that has endeared it to African leaders since the Tazara railway.

These gifts, he said, also allowed Beijing to re-emphasise the tangible and much-needed infrastructure benefits it provided to African economies – differentiating it from Western powers that focus on “intangible issues of governance and human rights” widely seen as disruptive by the ruling elites in Uganda, Zimbabwe and Zambia.

“Currently, the strategy is working,” Hodzi said. “[President Yoweri] Museveni has recently praised the Chinese for not being jealous of Uganda and caring about its development. Beijing also hopes that recipient governments will reciprocate by favouring Chinese businesses.”

David Shinn, an American diplomat and adjunct professor at George Washington University’s Elliott School of International Affairs, said China’s practice of building, at no charge, the African Union headquarters, regional African organisation headquarters, presidential palaces, military headquarters, public stadiums and political party headquarters was “brilliant public relations and probably buys a great deal of influence with African governments, regional organisations and the general public”.

But he questioned whether African leaders really believed the projects involved no quid pro quo, as Chinese diplomats often claim. If so, they were mistaken, he said.

“African leaders can be excused for taking no interest in Chinese internal issues such as human rights, the treatment of Uygurs in Xinjiang, the situation in Tibet, the building of islands in the South China Sea and the status of Hong Kong,” Shinn said.

“But a surprising number of African governments are supporting China’s position on these policies. That is where the quid pro quo comes into play.”

Stephen Chan, a professor of world politics at the University of London’s School of Oriental and African Studies, said China built prestige projects internationally.

“They sit alongside the infrastructure projects – roads, railways – for which China is well known,” he said.

“But they are not as expensive. In a way, it is visibility for less outlay. It also gives exposure to Chinese construction firms. For China, it is a win-win situation.”

But critics have questioned the motives behind China’s largesse. Last year, a French newspaper Le Monde claimed Beijing was spying on the African Union (AU), saying it had installed hidden microphones in the building and was taping sensitive information.

Beijing dismissed the report’s “groundless accusations”, while the AU called them “baseless”Analysts say China’s efforts to gift imposing projects is part of its broader chequebook diplomacy programme in Africa to win the affection and allegiance of its elite.

Bradley Parks, executive director of AidData, a research lab at the College of William and Mary in the US state of Virginia, said Beijing often plied African leaders with lavish spending on projects, such as stadiums, theatres, museums and parliamentary buildings, that disproportionately benefited urban elites.

Beijing’s purpose was partly to secure African countries’ support for its policy positions such as its opposition to the South China Sea arbitration process at the Permanent Court of Arbitration in The Hague and its adherence to a “one-China” policy on Taiwan, he said.

Parks was part of a team that recently published an AidData paper showing that Chinese aid was used either to buy African governments’ support for its foreign policy or as a reward for them providing it.

“Across the continent, we find that there is a strong, positive, and statistically significant relationship between Chinese aid provision and voting with China in the UN General Assembly [UNGA],” he said.

“To give you a sense of the magnitude of this effect, our statistical model indicates that a 10 per cent increase in UNGA voting similarity with China yields an 86 per cent increase in Chinese aid, on average,” he said.

As an example, he said, the model predicted that if Rwanda moved from its 67 per cent level of voting alignment with China in the UN General Assembly to Egypt’s level – 93 per cent, the maximum level of UN voting alignment with China in their Africa sample – it would see a 289 per cent increase in aid from China.

Conversely, if Egypt’s 93 per cent level of voting alignment with China in the UN General Assembly fell to Equatorial Guinea’s level (65 per cent), “our statistical model predicts that Egypt would see an 87 per cent reduction in aid from China”, Parks said.

So Far So Good, Trump Unmoved By Attack On US Military Base

As promised, Iran fired back at the United States Wednesday, striking two Iraqi military bases that house American soldiers.

According to the Associated Press , Iran fired more than a dozen missiles at the military bases. No casualties have been reported.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the strike was in response to a U.S. drone strike in Baghdad that killed Iranian Revolutionary Guard Gen. Qassem Soleimani.

The General was popular with some Iranians but widely regarded as a terrorist on the international stage.
“Last night they received a slap,” Khamenei said in a speech after the missile strikes.

“These military actions are not sufficient (for revenge). What is important is that the corrupt presence of America in this region comes to an end.”

Iran’s foreign minster also tweeted that Tehran had taken and “concluded proportionate measures in self-defense,” and said Tehran did “not seek escalation.”

Iran’s Revolutionary Guard also released a statement about the missile attack: “We are warning all American allies, who gave their bases to its terrorist army, that any territory that is the starting point of aggressive acts against Iran will be targeted.”

Trump, however, said there were no casualties in the attack on the U.S. troop housing.

“All is well!” President Donald Trump tweeted after the missile attacks, adding, “So far, so good.”

Iraqi Prime Minister Adel Abdul-Mahdi said he received notification from Iran just after midnight that a retaliation “was starting or would start soon” and would target only on U.S. positions.
Finland and Lithuania militaries also received information about an imminent attack and evacuated their bases.
According to the Associated Press, there were at least five impact sites on the Ain al-Asad base in Iraq’s Anbar province. U.S. officials said 15 missiles were fired.

“As we evaluate the situation and our response, we will take all necessary measures to protect and defend U.S. personnel, partners and allies in the region,” said Jonathan Hoffman, an assistant to the U.S. defense secretary.- Associated Press

MaShurugwi Storm Police Base In Bid To Free Arrested Colleagues

Health Experts “Condemn” Bread From Zanu PF Bakeries

Farai Dziva|Health experts in Masvingo have warned members of public against buying bread from Zanu PF initiated bakeries.

Speaking to ZimEye.com on Wednesday health experts expressed concern at the safety of the bread – for human consumption.

The health experts argue the bread has not been properly certified fit for human consumption.

“We are concerned about the safety of the bread -for human consumption.

This is a political project that is being controlled by politicians. They have not followed the proper procedure of seeking permission to operate such projects,” said one health officer.

However Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Information Nick Mangwana claimed:

“Community bakeries have started producing high quality confectionery products at less than half the price charged by conventional bakers in Masvingo.

A loaf of bread in parts of rural Masvingo is selling at $8,50 compared to $18,50 in urban outlets”

Declaration Of Assets By Public Officials Is A Preventative Anti- Corruption Tool

By Lloyd Mupfudze| In his 2020 national budget statement on November 14, 2019 the Minister of finance and economic development professor Mthuli Ncube correctly states that corruption causes economic malaise, wastage of public resources, jeopardises the environment for domestic and foreign investment and reinforces political instability. Minister Ncube listed various strategies the government will take to curb corruption in Zimbabwe.

Whilst some of the strategies are key in the fight against corruption, government stand accused of taking it too long to come up with legislation to enforce chapter 9 of the constitution. Section 194 talks about the basic values and principles governing public administration. Section 198 states that, “An act of Parliament must provide measures to enforce the provisions of this chapter, including measures requiring public officers to make regular disclosures of their assets, (b) establishing codes of conduct to be observed by public officers….”

Why is it taking so long for the government to introduce the legislation given the magnitude of the problem? The government’s reluctance to come up with the legislation shows the government’s lack of political will to lead by example and to combat the endemic and grand corruption which has continued to have corrosive effects on the socio and economic rights of millions of Zimbabweans.

I have repeatedly heard from different segments of society that the government anti-corruption drive is nothing but just “a catch and release strategy”. The government cannot be said to be taking a strong stance in the fight against corruption and impunity if it is failing or neglecting the implementation of chapter 9 of the constitution.

There have been efforts to combat corruption but have been concentrated at national level by the anti-corruption commission. There is not much that have been happening at local level. Efforts to control corruption at local government level are dealt with by local government minister who have been accused of taking a partisan approach when it comes to dealing with corruption.

Declaration or disclosure of assets is now part of the constitution what is now left is for the government to enact an enabling law as provided for in the supreme law. Requiring public officials to provide lists of their assets and interests is one of the most effective means of preventing and identifying corruption. According to a 2012 publication by the World Bank and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Public Office, Private Interests: Accountability through Income and Asset Disclosure, it has been noted that addressing corruption needs to be done on two simultaneous fronts: prevention and enforcement. Income and asset disclosure systems are recognised as an anti-corruption tool that can potentially support both prevention and enforcement. According to this publication, there are three main benefits of financial disclosure: detecting and preventing corrupt behaviour and conflicts of interests; building integrity in public service; and enhancing public confidence in the integrity of government.

There is need for an entity that manages the register of assets. In many parts of the world the issue of asset declaration has become key in the fight against corruption. Rwanda introduced it and have an online system every citizen can go online and see what their leaders or public officials owns. South Africa have also implemented a declaration of assets. Even in South Sudan, the world’s youngest country asset disclosure has become a focal point in the fight against corruption.

Declaration of asset and financial disclosure is a sign of commitment to transparency and accountability. It also promotes public trust in government.

Zanu PF, Health Experts Clash Over Community Bakeries

OPINION: It’s Rigging, Rejection Of Election Results Is Inconsequential

Dear Gideon Chitanga

“The consequent illegitimacy facing President Mnangagwa after the rejection of his election victory by Chamisa has triggered political and economic uncertainty which has blighted his government’s efforts of reengagement with the international community and prospects of financial support from International Financial Institutions(IFIs), multilateral and bilateral aid from Western countries, which imposed sanctions on ZANU PF elites, resulting in concerning socio-economic meltdown, nudging sub-regional leaders to push for dialogue,” you said in Zimeye.

“The United Nations has already indicated that Zimbabwe is at the mercy of a disastrous man-made disaster as the country faces drought which may worsen emigration into already economically pressed neighbours, especially South Africa.”

This is just nonsense devoid of logic!

President Mnangagwa is not illegitimate because Chamisa “rejected his election victory”. Mnagagwa is illegitimate because the July 2018 elections were flawed and illegal and therefore null and void. A null and void elections process cannot produce a legitimate result and government. What Chamisa said and did is as inconsequential as me commanding the sun to rise tomorrow – it will rise regardless.

The Americans, the EU, the Commonwealth and many other international nations and organisations were in Zimbabwe and had first hand witness accounts of how Zanu PF had blatantly rigged the July 2018 elections.

“The electoral commission lacked full independence and appeared to not always act in an impartial manner. The final results as announced by the Electoral Commission contained numerous errors and lacked adequate traceability, transparency and verifiability,” stated the EU Election Mission final report.

“As such, many aspects of the 2018 elections in Zimbabwe failed to meet international standards.”

So you think the EU, the Americans, etc. were going to rewrite their reports just because Chamisa accept the flawed and illegal process.

Indeed, Chamisa is the one taking advantage of the West’s condemnation of the elections to push his own selfish agenda. He claim to have the key to unlock the economy; it is just grandstanding, he has no keys to change the reality of Zimbabwe being a pariah state.

Zimbabwe is a pariah state ruled by corrupt, incompetent and vote rigging thugs. No investors wants to do business with these crooks! As long as Zimbabwe remains a pariah state, there will be no meaningful economic recovery.

The UN is spot on, Zimbabwe’s seemingly intractable economic and political crisis is “a man-made disaster”. The root cause of the crisis is the failure to hold free, fair and democratic elections – Zanu PF is responsible for that bit.

The second bit, is allowing Zanu PF to get away with rigged elections – MDC leaders, the ordinary Zimbabweans and, to a lesser extend, SADC leaders are responsible for this. All this talk of dialogue with Zanu PF is just another way of avoiding telling Zanu PF thugs the truth – that they rigged the elections – and holding them to account!

The key, the only key, to end Zimbabwe’s pariah state is for everyone to acknowledge the July 2018 elections were flawed and illegal and the country has no legitimate government. We need an interim government to implement the reforms necessary for free, fair and credible elections! Nothing else will suffice!

The solution to Zimbabwe’s man-made crisis must address the elephant in the room or it is just a waste of time! Given the seriousness of the mess in Zimbabwe today; the country does not have time to waste.

All Souls Mission SDC Exposed?

Dear Editor

The School Development Committee (SDC) at All Souls Mission School in Mutoko has been exposed after it has emerged that no school has applied for an upward review of fees and the Government through the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has not approved any fees increase ahead of the first term opening next week.

The SDC led by Chairperson,Mrs Wadzanayi Kanyuchi had told parents and guardian that the Ministry had approved fees for 2020 from $2000 Zimbabwe dollars to about $7700 Zimbabwe dollars.

What surprised parents was that there were no papers to show from the Permanent Secretary’s office which pointed to the effect. Government has reiterated it will not tolerate waywardness in the education sector, where
schools are proposing massive hikes in fees.

While most schools have hinted at fees increases, Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Ambassador Cain Mathema last Friday said no school had made a formal application.

He said schools wishing to increases fees should confine the figure to a maximum of 20 percent of the current amount.

“We have been clear even in the statements that we have made before.Every school should first come to the ministry to apply before they increase school fees, which is the procedure. We will not tolerate lawlessness in education,” said Ambassador Mathema.

It still needs to be heard how the All Souls Mission SDC had reached to such a huge figure without the consent of the education authorities. The current fee before a massive hike for a Form One pupil was $2040 Zimbabwe dollars and $2070 Zimbabwe dollars for those doing Advanced level.

On Saturday, a handful of parents and guardians were seen at the Roman Catholic Cathedral along Simon Muzenda Street in Harare where there were carrying a ‘clearance process’ which is usually done by the school before opening of each term.

Mrs Kanyuchi who usually lead the process was absent and rumours which were doing circles was that parents had planned to ‘impeach’ her and undress here for causing commotion at the school among other things.

The Deputy Chair, referred as Mr Mubaiwa and committee member,
a one Mr Chidzero were seen trying to organize everything in her absence cheering parents to pay fees in full.

“The committee headed by the chairperson must be relieved of its duties immediately; we thank it for whatever it has done for the school, we want the one that plans with parents for the betterment of the school”, a parent said.

At the venue the school Bursar, Mr Sebastian Nyandoro told parents to pay $5000 Zimbabwe dollars upfront before getting a clearance which he said another $2000 would be paid through a payment plan with the School Head Mr Felix Shoko after one had reached him through his mobile phone.

However, Zimbabwe Teachers’ Association (ZIMTA) chief executive officer Dr Sifiso Ndlovu and Zimbabwe Schools Development associations/ Committees Secretary-general Mr Everisto Jongwe said while schools were following procedures, Government was taking long to approve those proposed fees increases.

The Principal Director of Primary, Secondary and Non-formal education, Mr Peter Muzawazi said the Ministry is in the process of assessing applications for fee increases.

He said after assessing the applications the Ministry will be able to come up with a proper subsidy.

Mr Muzawazi said for the Pernanent Secretary to approve the request by schools, there should be audited accounts showing how the previous funds for the school was used and also parents would have met to agree on the new fees.

It is yet to be seen whether All Souls Mission and other schools around the country are going to defy the Government directive of not increasing fees and hike the old fees by 20 percent.

“The Government through the education sector should help us out from vultures such as SDC who siphon monies from parents in the pretext that they want to develop schools yet some end up converting the funds for their own use or making deals with school authorities.

“Most of the parents are civil servants and ordinary people, where do you think we can get such amount; they should show remorse and agree with parents on a forum than to be passive. Taking a child to school is just basic, so why making massive fees hike”, queried another parent, AmaiBhobha.

Parents with children that go to All Souls School are also worried with the way the school has been communicating to them.

“We were blocked from the school WhatsApp platform which was used by the SDC to ‘rule’ and pass decision. It’s not proper for a school to do such behavior. The school should use the platform to communicate issues that would have been agreed on to parents.

“We do not condone the situation whereby the SDC use the platform to abuse and victimise parents, they should take note and come to order before we report them to the police”, urged another parent.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa during the 13 th monthly National Environment Cleaning Dayheld at Kuwadzana 2 Shopping Centre in Harare said the Government would crack the whip on schools that had increased fees without approval.

“From what I understand, the minister said the fees had not been increased, but we will soon send out inspectors to schools to investigate the matter, but in Government schools, we have not increased fees,” he said.

Acting Minister of Primary and Secondary Education Kirsty Coventry last month told Parliament that schools were not allowed to increase their fees by more than 20 percent without Government approval.

Father Aaron Kamusekera who is the administrator of the Roman Catholic school could not be reached for comment and way forward as he is said to be currently in Italy where he is studying.

However, some schools, especially boarding schools, have reportedly increased their fees to between $10 000 and $12 000 for Form Ones, while some private schools are demanding foreign currency.

Former ED Advisor Blasts Proposed Constitutional Amendments

By A Correspondent- Former President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s advisor, Petina Gappah, who is an international lawyer and investment expert, has criticised the Zimbabwean government for proposing to amend the Constitution.

Gappah said the Constitutional Amendment Bill sets a dangerous precedent of changing a constitution before it has been implemented. Writing on Twitter, she said:

The problem of the proposed constitutional amendments is not that “ED will have greater powers than Mugabe”. This is hyperbolic propaganda.

The real problem is that it sets a dangerous precedent of changing a constitution that’s barely been implemented since it was approved.

It’s also a spectacular own goal. For 2 years, the government has done nothing about constitutional/political reforms they promised.

And yet they’ve speedily approved this. They’ve set themselves back on foreign policy aims, e.g. rejoining the Commonwealth, deepening reengagement

The Chief Justice clause is unintentionally funny in what it says about our judiciary. It is a public vote of no confidence.

It sends a clear message that no one is good enough to be Chief Justice so the current one has to have the constitution amended to allow him to stay.

This I believe is the most unfortunate aspect of the proposed changes. Our institutions urgently need strengthening to make them independent of political control.

But they are willfully making changes to weaken the judiciary. I sincerely hope these changes do not go through
