Zim’s Bread Basket Status Unpacked!

By Wandile Sihlobo|A hackneyed expression is that Zimbabwe went from the breadbasket of Africa to its basket case under long-time autocrat Robert Mugabe. But was the first part true?

There is a commonly held view that Zimbabwe used to be the breadbasket of Africa, although the specific timeframe in history is usually unclear.

This vague narrative gives an impression that Zimbabwe lost its “breadbasket” status during former President Robert Mugabe’s tenure. While Mugabe’s land reform programme seemingly contributed to a decline in Zimbabwe’s agricultural output, there’s limited evidence to suggest that the country was a dominant player in Africa’s food production prior to that period – at least from a staple food production perspective.

Zim’s production never topped 10% share

A country should be able to meet its staple food consumption needs and simultaneously command a notable share in exports of the same food commodity to be considered a “food-basket”.

Looking at the production data of the key staple foods maize and wheat, Zimbabwe’s production of these commodities has never surpassed a 10% share on the continent over the past 55 years. (Note: The Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations started recording African agricultural statistics in 1961.)

While that is the case, a closer look at the data paints a fuller picture.

For example, in the two decades prior to Mugabe’s leadership (1960–1980), Zimbabwe contributed an average share of 6% of Africa’s maize production, almost at par with Nigeria, but lower than Kenya’s contribution of 7%. During that period, Zimbabwe’s maize production outpaced consumption by an average 400,000 tonnes a year – making it a net exporter.

During the first half of Mugabe’s rule (1980–2000), the country’s maize production contributed a share of 5% to Africa’s output. While it was a net importer in most years, on average, the country remained a net exporter of maize, with a declining maize trade balance (the difference between a nation’s exports and imports).

The decline in Zimbabwe’s maize production and trade balance worsened following theintroduction of the country’s Fast-Track Land Reform Programme in 2001.

The country’s share of maize production on the continent dwindled to an average of 2% between 2001 and 2016. During this period, Zimbabwe’s maize consumption outpaced production by an average of 550,000 tonnes per year – turning it into a net importer.

Wheat and other grain commodities present a similar trend in Zimbabwe’s contribution to Africa’s food system.

Fails to fit idea of food-basket

The available data, which covers three distinct phases in Zimbabwe’s agricultural sector, suggests that the country was self-sufficient before and in the two decades after Mugabe came to power.

Even then, Zimbabwe’s maize and wheat output were generally modest and volatile. It wasn’t sufficient to support strong exports to the rest of the continent and world – which fails to fit the idea of a food-basket.

In the third phase, the country’s maize and wheat production significantly declined, which further weakened Zimbabwe’s standing in the continent’s food system.

Overall, we view Zimbabwe as a self-sufficient food producer prior to its land reform programme. However, there is limited evidence to support the notion of Zimbabwe having ever been “the breadbasket of Africa”.

Madhuku Furious That ED Is Now Getting More Powers Than President Mugabe

angered…Lovemore Madhuku

By A Correspondent| Polad member, and Constitutional law expert and Motlanthe commissioner, Lovemore Madhuku is furious over moves by ZANU PF to change the constitution so to give its party leader Emmerson Mnangagwa more powers than his predecessor Robert Mugabe possessed.

Cabinet on the 17th December pushed through a bill that will remove the running mates clause for Vice Presidents, and furthermore centralise powers to the president to cherry pick judges, the Prosecutor General as well as to appoint a parallel Human Rights authority running in the name of Public Protector.

Speaking in response, Madhuku said:

“The proposed amendments to the Constitution on running mates, the judiciary and the PG must be opposed on the following sacrosanct basis: a government of the day must not be allowed to tailor the Constitution to suit its purely partisan interests.

“The Constitution cannot be amended merely because ZANU PF says so. Both within and outside Polad, I will stand for the position that defines me vis-a-vis a Constitution: a constitution must not be the word of the ruling politicians.”

Fake Dissidents Used To Kill Civilians: Gwesela Was Just A ZANU PF Implant Like Tinashe Jonas

By Keepwell Zuzumbe| How many dissidents do you know? Gwesela, Gayigusu and Thambolenyoka were Zanu PF creations (just like this modern Team Ferret member Tinashe Jonas) if you didn’t know.

I come from Lower Gwelo where Gwesela was operating. People did not even know that Gwesela was a dissident they were told by the army and Zanu pf militias who had camped in the area killing people and burning homes and raping people under the pretext of looking for Gwesela. Gwesela had no car, he moved around sometimes unarmed, sometimes carrying an AK 47, everyone knew him.

Yet in the same area there was a battalion of soldiers, Support Unit, Zanu PF militia all said to be looking for Gwesela and these were armed having better weapons and driving military vehicles and they never caught him.

From 1982 -7 they could not catch him. Come some years later his son is employed by ZIFA as pay back. Thambolenyoka is there and was silenced with a mine, you have been made to hate the Ndebeles up to believing every nonsense said by Zanu pf.

All those dissidents were gvt CIOs who were not arrested. Gwesela did not even kill or destroy any bridge or gvt infrastructure. He was moving around killing people calling them abathengisi because they could have been talking to soldiers.

I think the soldiers were the ones reporting people to Gwesela. Then Zanu pf militias will be watching every home stead that Gwesela entered during the day. Then they would come kill the people for supporting Gwesela.

Zanu pf militias and soldiers would tell by seeing the footprint that this is Gwesela. As these soldiers and militias move out, Gwesela would come in.

Ask those members of the Fifth Brigade if your father was involved. Go and ask him, he will tell you the truth. The current talkative Zanu pf war veterans are former members of Fifth Brigade like Constantino Chiwenga.

Dont Panick, Farmers Told

Farmers should continue planting their summer crops as the 2019-20 planting window is still open, Government and experts have advised.

They stressed the need to plant short-season varieties or traditional small grains and using moisture conservation techniques.

Irrigation is becoming increasingly important, but farmers need to use irrigation carefully to conserve limited water supplies.

Advice from agricultural extension officers on when to plant is vital and farmers should be ready to reduce plant populations and ridge to make full use of any available rains.

There had been concern over dry conditions countrywide, with some farmers who had not planted panicking and no longer certain if it was still viable to continue preparations for planting.

Those with germinated crops were worried their crops would wilt under the hot and dry conditions.

Isolated rains were received in some parts of the country yesterday, bringing relief to farmers in those areas.

Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement Minister Perrance Shiri yesterday said farmers should continue planting.

“Climate change is adversely affecting agriculture. Irrigation becomes very important as it ensures household food security. If the dry conditions continue, we will have challenges with those who do not have irrigation,” he said.

He urged farmers to use irrigation responsibly. “Our rivers are drying up and we should use our water responsibly.”

From the onset of the rainy season, Minister Shiri, encouraged farmers to grow traditional grains, also known as small grains, which are more tolerant to dry conditions than maize.

“Those planting should continue planting traditional grains. This is the way of smart agriculture. We should promote smart agriculture; using what is available and look for better ways of boosting yields,”  he said.

The traditional grains are indigenous to Africa and over long periods of time have adapted to complex weather patterns experienced on the

Government was rehabilitating dysfunctional irrigation facilities to boost irrigation activities.

EXPLOSIVE: Jonathan Moyo Promises 24-Thread Twitter Expose

Exiled former Zanu PF politburo member, Professor Jonathan Moyo has promised an explosive 24 threaded Twitter expose on what transpired in the July 30, 2018 elections, Zanu PF party and Zimbabwe politics at large.

Posting on Twitter yesterday, Moyo said after this thread, he will not do another one ever again.

He added that he will it as an opportunity to share his 2020 vision statement

“Friends & foes, on 31 December 2019, I’ll do a 24-tweet thread after which I’ll do no such thread ever again. I’ll share my 2020 vision statement about myself, ZanuPF, party politics, the 2018 presidential poll, @ZECzim & Zimbabwe. Enough is enough,” said Moyo.

Responding to Moyo, Businessman Mutumwa Mawere had no kind words for the former Higher education minister, accusing him of playing with people’s minds.

“Zim is bigger than your mind can possibly absorb. What is a vision of a single person who finds himself outside the borders of his country of birth? I thought u r no longer a member of ZANU-PF. The 2018 election is history. What is enough? Can you at least reduce urself2the povo?,” said Mawere.

Nick Mangwana On Why ED Hasn’t Flown Out Of Country Since Chiwenga’s Return

Below was the government spokesman Nick Mangwana’s response on the reason why Emmerson Mnangagwa has not left the country since the day his deputy Constantino Chiwenga returned from China.

VIDEO LOADING BELOW…

Chiwenga flew into Zimbabwe unannounced on the 23rd November, the day which is also Mnangagwa’s special anniversary (coup presidency.)

Ever since that day, Mnangagwa has remained in the country spending the longest home stay since taking over power in November 2017.

Said Mangwana, “when His Excellency leaves the country, you complain that he travels too much, he doesn’t stay at home.

“He stays at home you complain that he is not leaving the country. He is damned when he does and damned when he doesn’t.

“But being President, he always exercises his executive judgement.”

Nigeria Takes The Lead In Adopting New West African Currency, Dumps The Naira.

Correspondent|In 2020, Nigeria will be saying bye bye to the Naira as its official currency, as it adopts a new currency called the ‘Eco’.

The ‘Eco’ is a single currency that will be adopted by West African countries as from next year as part of the sub-region’s greater structural reforms.

17 West African countries will adopt the Eco currency when it will be released. These countries are Benin Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Cote d’Ivoire (Ivory Coast), The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Saint Helena, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo.

The Eco is expected to be adopted on the first of July 2020, but since the concept arose in 2003, the target launch date for the currency has been postponed several times: in 2005, 2010 and 2014. Countries in the franc region and other West African nations such as Nigeria and Ghana, which have their own currencies, have for decades debated creating their own currency, the Eco.

With the adoption of the Eco next year,

French speaking West African countries will ditch the CFA Franc, known as “Colonies Francaises d’Afrique,” which was established in 1945 and pegged to the Euro since 1999.

The official symbol for the Eco will be ‘Ec’.

According to reports, the Eco notes will

feature great African legends and showcase features of West Africa.

The official bank for the sub-region’s currency will be known as the Central Bank of West Africa (CBWA).

There is no official value for the Eco currency yet.

A specific launch date for the Eco has not yet been announced but it has been speculated that January 2020 is when the single currency will be launched.

Is Zimbabwe Heading For A Famine?

Stunted cobs in a dry maize field in the Mutoko rural area of Zimbabwe.

A swathe of Zimbabwe, running from the southwest to the northeast, faces a “phase 3” food crisis after a sporadic start to the November to March rainy season, the Famine Early Warning Systems Network (Fewsnet) said.

Phase 3 is just two steps down from full-blown famine, the USAID-funded Fewsnet said in an e-mailed statement on Friday.

The forecast for the region is for “below-average rainfall”, it said. Parts of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Madagascar, Mozambique and Malawi will also be affected, it added.

It’s the second drought in as many years. “Many areas of the region are likely to face a second consecutive poor rainfall season and harvest,” the organisation warned.

That’s particularly bad for Zimbabwe, where the “poor macroeconomy is negatively affecting planting and germination rates”, it said.

Millions of rural Zimbabweans are too poor to plant and farm maize, the country’s staple food. Zimbabwe faces an economic crisis where shortages of cash, fuel and electricity cripple people’s access to basic food.

“High staple prices in the region are contributing to below-average purchasing power for a significant number of poor households,” Fewsnet said, mainly because prices are trending 5%-10% above the five-year average in SA, the region’s biggest producer and the source of much of the region’s milled maize.

The World Food Programme (WFP) will extend a pilot programme that fed about 19,000 “vulnerable” urban poor in 2019 to eight new areas in 2020, its Harare spokesperson, Tinashe Mubaira, said on Friday. Of about 8-million people who faced “severe hunger” this year, 2.2-million lived in urban areas, Mubaira said in an e-mailed statement. The WFP plans to provide money to 200,000 urban residents.

Farmers in Zimbabwe traditionally plant maize in November, when the rainy season begins. So far, they’ve received as little as 55% of normal rainfall, with the luckiest receiving 85%.

“Don’t Panic,” Farmers Urged

Government was rehabilitating dysfunctional irrigation facilities to boost irrigation activities.

“We are also trying very hard to bring in irrigation equipment such as centre pivots. The other option is looking at other crops such as potatoes to fill the gap,” he said.

Agriculture expert and Agriseeds director (sales and marketing), Mr Ivan Craig said farmers could continue planting, but devise moisture retention techniques such as mulching and ridging.

“Farmers still have the chance to plant their summer crops. Farmers can also prepare land and if they have done so they should come back and harness as much moisture as possible through ridging.

“If the crops have emerged, they can grow using dew. Those who have not yet planted can establish a medium population of between 36 000 plants and 46 000 plants per hectare and they will not compete for moisture and nutrients,” he said.

Mr Craig said in this case, yields were down and farmers should reduce fertiliser application to match the reduced plant population.

“Farmers can now only apply between 250kg – 300kg of fertiliser per hectare. Weeds should also be removed as they compete with crops for nutrients,” he said.

Climate change expert Professor Desmond Manatsa said there were no prospects of meaningful rain until the second week of January.

He said the current situation resulted in dry weather conditions for Southern Africa.

“We are currently experiencing the positive Indian Ocean Dipole. This is when the West Indian Ocean is warmer than the south easterly surface temperatures which form the Inter Tropical Convergence Zone which is responsible for producing rain in Southern Africa.”

He said normally, the mid-season dry spell was experienced mid-December .

“The mid-season dry spell marks the transition from rainfall from westerly cloud bands to rainfall from the ITCZ. The ITCZ has been weakened and we will not see any meaningful rains even during the first week of January,” he said.

Prof Manatsa said cloud seeding could not help in this situation as there were no suitable clouds to be seeded.

“If clouds are not there, there is nothing to seed. If we seed hazy clouds, they will evaporate. Cloud seeding is ruled out at the moment,” he said.

African research scientist and University of Zimbabwe (UZ) professorial chair of the Department of Soil Science and Agricultural Engineering, Professor Sheunesu Mpepereki, said the current droughts that had been affecting agricultural production called for concerted efforts if the country was to continue with production.

He said while climate change was real, there was need to explore other avenues to find solutions to the problem.

Climate change effects could be reduced if there was intensive research on possible and suitable irrigation facilities that could be availed to all categories of farmers.

“Zimbabwe is the country with the highest number of waterbodies in Sub-Saharan Africa and we should make full use of the water to produce food.”

Zimbabwe Was Never The Breadbasket Of Africa – Full Text

National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi yesterday said on Boxing Day police recorded 73 accidents, six of them fatal. “The major cause of the accidents was speeding, reversing errors, following too closely and inattention,” he said.

On Boxing Day last year, 102 accidents were recorded resulting in eight people being killed.

Asst Comm Nyathi appealed to motorists to be attentive and avoid speeding.

“They should ensure that their vehicles are mechanically sound before embarking on journeys,” he said.

Police arrested 117 touts while 129 vehicles were impounded, with 724 tickets being issues on Boxing Day for a variety of offences.

Infertility Scars: Through The Narrow Gate

By Heaven Munyuki | (This is a real life story narrated by an infertile woman Joy, who married a man he loved and had a blissful short stint in marriage before it somersaulted into hell. She then faced a plethora of challenges such as abuse from the man she loved as well as society isolation, the crime she committed being failure to conceive. This is a touching story which depicts daily harrowing experiences faced by young African women who fail to conceive. The pith is on battered wives being: today’s bruises and minor lacerations may be tomorrow’s skull fructure and broken back. Get help or get out.)

Being a vivacious and beautiful young lady I was ready for marriage. My boyfriend Nox wanted to marry me in 2010 but could not afford because he was very poor. He survived on selling scrap metal. One summer afternoon Nox invited me for introductions in Mbare where he lived with his grandmother and sister. Being someone who deeply loved Nox despite the fact that he had nothing materially, I obliged to his request.

When we arrived at their rented room, I could not hold back my tears. They lived in a small kitchen in a dreadful state of dilapidation. They were three of them in such a tiny cubicle and the conditions were squalid. We greeted her grandmother but she was not welcoming at all and I immediately said goodbye after exchanging a few pleasantries. At later date Nox informed me that her grandmother was not impressed by our relationship but we vowed that we would stick to each other through thick and thin. Nox suggested that we needed to live together. I left my job as a housemaid and eloped to him though we were living at his friend’s place. We then relocated to a room he had secured in the neighbourhood for us. We lived happily and we loved each other, though his grandmother was not happy about our stay together.

A year into the marriage I had not conceived. Anxiety, depression and demotivation crept in and i became more paranoid. Neighbours exacerbated the situation by telling me to seek help since no man would live with a barren wife. My journeys to seek spiritual help started. Nox would accompany me to various proliferating apostolic shrines to seek spiritual guidance from various prophets. Three years down the line, nothing materialised despite all our efforts.

We climbed numerous holy mountains, drank various concortions including elephant dung, eggs, soda and hot chilli but to no avail. My husband loved me despite our infertility problem. He never indulged in extramarital affairs and we were supporting each other all the time. He was always defending me when anyone tried to mock me about my infertility problem. He then solemnised our marriage by paying lobola and my parents where exceedingly happy and blessed our union.

Little did I know that payment of lobola had heralded the genesis of my tribulations. Marriage bliss somersaulted into hell, love turned into hatred and life became sour. A month after payment of lobola, Nox told me that if i fail to be pregnant the following month he was going to send me back to my parents so that they could help me to conceive. Emotional and physical abuse became an order of the day. The bride price had authored the demise of my marriage. Indeed as he had promised, he chased me after failing to fall pregnant. He sent a text message to my father informing him about his decision and my father waited for me at our local shops. As soon as I disembarked from the bus my father broke down in tears. He was overwhelmed by emotions and could not stomach such a consequence of infertility.

My father sold cattle and we traversed through many regions of Zimbabwe seeking help from prophets and I returned to my husband Nox after getting assurance that i would fall pregnant as soon as i returned to my husband. I stayed with my husband with the hope that I was going to fall pregnant but heavens could not open. My efforts to get help for me to conceive intensified. I visited more famous prophets and powerful traditional healers. I faced humiliating acts being done to me, sometimes being instructed to remove all the clothes and various humiliating exorcising acts being perfomed on my naked body usually at midnight. I tried everything (sometimes i would move around in the company of my lovely mother), including herbs such as tree roots and barks but the doors remained shut.

When i noticed that misfortunes were dogging me, I decided to go to school to further my studies as a way of occupying my mind. We continued to live together as husband and wife though life was now hard and emotionally I was drained. I later got employment as a babyminder and used my income to cater for our welfare and that of my husband. Truly speaking I loved Nox and I would buy him best clothes from reputable shops. During weekends we would go out to enjoy ourselves in resort areas, but all these efforts went unnoticed.

He would reciprocate with scorn and vilification. I bought various kitchen and dinning assets such as refridgerators and we relocated to dwell in a better apartment using my money all in the name of love. I loved my husband nommatter how bad he treated me because of infertility. From the wages I was getting I managed to save for a residential stand. I was planning a better life for my family.

Days and seasons passed by,my hope of bearing waned with each passing day. Nox informed me that he was going to find a husband for me meaning he was no longer comfortable to continue living with me. I told him point blank that i was i woman not an object that could be exchanged willynilly. Abuse intensified: I would be battered daily with open hands and fists and he would mock my entire generation as a cursed lineage that did not deserve space on mother earth. He would say I was useless in bed, would accuse me of prostitution and infidelity and would say i was a useless parasite that thrived on living lavishly at his expense yet I was not bearing children. To him I was causing huge financial loss.

One evening I came home late from work,it was raining and had been given an umbrella by a workmate. He was so furious as he accused me of being a seasoned prostiture who was in the habit of being given various gifts by boyfriends. He struck me on the head with an iron bar in front of neighbours who tried invain to restrain him. Blood oozed incessantly from the damaged head as he pulled me out of the room into the water soaked ground. All my clothes were drenched in blood and rain and to make the situation worse it was during my menses.

All my tampons were soaked in rain and blood and had never been changed all day, causing an itchy feeling on my genitalia. I managed to seek refuge at a nearby house overnight and came back the following morning thinking that when he had physically punched me he was drunk. I could hardly walk properly, all my ribs were in pain, I had bruises all over my body and blood was dripping from my auditory canal signifying a damaged ear drum.

When I reached our house the door was locked and we followed him to his workplace in the company of a kind hearted old woman where i had slept. We were expecting to reconcile but when we reached to him he was not remorseful at all. I could hardly talk because my mandibles had been dislocated. He advanced towards me ,cleared his throat and spit the sputum on my forehead shouting that he no longer loved me. He reached to his pockets and took a 50 cent coin which he threw at me as a divorce token. At this juncture I accepted the fate, could not bear anymore the beatings and abuse.

I waded home and the pain inflicted during the violence was now taking its toll.Every step i took was with laboured effort. When I reached home i quickly took a bath, removed soiled clothes and wore clean ones, then left to search for a room to rent. It was now a second day since i had last eaten. My body was now too weak to continue, I fell prostrate upon the ground, pespiration cascading down my temples. I felt that my flesh and spirit were being seperated. The gulf of barreness was now so broad,so deep that my spirit shuddered before it. I crawled to a nearby house to search for food. I was feeling that the burden of infertility was now unbearable. The owners of the house gave me some leftovers, I slept, woke up after regaining my strength and resumed my journey to secure a room to rent.Luckily i got one, paid for it and all i was left was the 50 cent token which i used to buy chips since I felt more thirstier and hungrier than before. When I arrived at our house I loaded my property in a hired lorry and left his house to my own place.

After a month in separation, he followed me and apologised but I told him to go and pass the apology to my elder sister which he did.

However one day again he reverted back to his antics, scolded me accusing me of being a useless moron and a barren woman who deserved nothing better other than ill treatment. It was a marathon shouting that lasted for five hours. I never uttered a single word in retaliation despite praying silently. The following day i took a sabbatical and went to my parents. It was a one week breathtaking period in which my parents counseled me before I returned to where we lived, my room.

The pregnancy question was a daily chorus.

55 Year Old Mama Sues 45 Year Old Boyfriend

AN enraged Bulawayo woman is suing her ex-boyfriend, who is a nurse at Mpilo Central Hospital, for $300 000 in damages for malicious prosecution following her arrest on trumped up charges of malicious damage to property.

Ms Judy Ndlovu (55) of Barbourfields suburb is accusing her former lover Mr Vushe Marime (45) of Tshabalala suburb of causing her arrest and subsequent prosecution on charges of malicious damage to property.

Ms Ndlovu was brought before the court on allegations of damaging window panes and burning curtains at Mr Marime’s house in July this year.

She was however, discharged at the close of the State case and acquitted by Western Commonage magistrate Ms Tancy Dube.

Ms Ndlovu alleges that her ex-boyfriend framed charges as a way of fixing her for terminating their affair.

Through her lawyers, Vundhla-Phulu and Partners, Ms Ndlovu filed summons at the Bulawayo High Court citing Mr Marime as a defendant. In papers before the court, Ms Ndlovu said her former lover reported her to the police for damaging property at his house.

“I was committed to a trial on the charge of malicious damage to property at Western Commonage magistrate’s court. I was acquitted at the end of the trial and by reporting me to the police, defendant set in motion a chain of events that led to my prosecution,” she said.

Ms Ndlovu said when Marime reported her to the police, he sought to punish her for terminating their relationship.

“The defendant acted without reasonable and probable cause when he reported me to the police. His intention was to harass and punish me for terminating our relationship,” she said.

Ms Ndlovu said as a result of her arrest and prosecution, she suffered damages in the sum of $300 000.

“Wherefore plaintiff prays for payment of the sum of $300 000 being damages suffered by the plaintiff as a result of malicious prosecution instituted at the instance of the defendant who acted without a just cause,” said Ms Ndlovu’s lawyers.

Mr Marime is yet to respond to the summons.

Mthuli’s Subsidies Continue To Cause Roller Meal Shortages

More subsidised roller meal will be in the shops once all millers start receiving the special maize allocations from the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) from Monday after a fruitful meeting between the Government and millers yesterday.

Shortages have been severe since only eight of the 61 millers had been receiving the special maize allocations for milling into roller meal but from next week all millers will be receiving the required special allocations from the Grain Marketing Board.

Millers met representatives from the Ministries of Industry and Commerce, Finance and Economic Development, the GMB and the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra).

The meeting came after some millers expressed concern that they were excluded from the subsidised roller meal programme as they had not been registered.

After the meeting, both parties confirmed they had a fruitful discussion and expected things to start improving next week with the subsidised roller meal being made available in shops.

Secretary for Industry and Commerce Dr Mavis Sibanda said Government was working with millers to eliminate all problems preventing the availability of subsidised roller meal on the market.

“We are working together with millers. We are in the process of ensuring all millers are functional,” said Dr Sibanda. We had a cordial meeting with the millers. It was an important meeting to understand each other. Millers wanted to understand the subsidy process and we updated each other on the processes.

“As the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, we want all millers to survive.”

On the registration concerns, Dr Sibanda said all millers were registered with the GMB.

Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) national chairman, Mr Tafadzwa Musarara, said there had been some changes to the subsidy programme, resulting in some millers experiencing challenges.

He said only eight millers had so far been registered for the subsidised roller meal programme.

This resulted in shortages on the market. Mr Musarara was confident of an improvement from next week as both parties had agreed to forge ahead.

“What Finance and Economic Development Minister Mthuli Ncube committed to us and how the programme has been executed had variance.

“There was a selection of eight millers and we do not know how they had been selected; those who were given maize. We need everyone to mill.

“More than 43 members were excluded from the programme and the Ministry of Industry and Commerce said is going to address the problem. Starting on Monday, GMB is going to take its responsibility of allocating maize to members, which allocation structure was done in consultation and agreement with the millers,” said Mr Musarara.

GMAZ said it was expecting to start receiving parts of its imported maize consignments which are expected to complement GMB’s supply. The organisation is expecting an initial delivery of 50 000 tonnes of maize from South Africa and another consignment is expected from Brazil.

“When the maize arrives in the next two to three weeks, we will discuss with Government on how much should go towards subsidised mealie meal. Two weeks from now, the situation should normalise,” he said.

The switch from a general grain subsidy to a particular product subsidy was meant to ensure that market prices prevailed throughout the system, except on the wholesale and retail prices of the actual subsidised product, thus removing market distortions that led to widespread cheating and inefficiencies.

20 Year Old Traditional Healer, Gambling Between School Work And Traditional Leadership

Chief Gambiza

State Media|Tugging a satchel stashed with exercise books and textbooks as he walks towards school hostels to freshen up after a long day of schooling, 19-year-old Mathew Bidi, who is a boarder at St Patrick’s High School sees some familiar grey-haired elderly people walking nonchalantly into the school gate.

Immediately, something struck him that all was not well back in the village.

As a young man who has grown up under the tutelage of his father, a traditional leader, a customary saying which goes, “An owl does not fly during the day for nothing” quickly comes into his mind.

In his traditional lingo, the elders say if you come across one (owl) flying in broad daylight, just know that something is after its life, something is wrong, so they presume, often correctly.

Anxiety and disquiet ran down the young Mathew’s body and blood when he is immediately summoned to the headmaster’s office and lo, as the gods had already knocked in him that something was wrong, the elders had come to deliver sad and devastating news — his father Chief Gambiza of Chiwundura was no more.

Mathew says it did not immediately dawn on him that as the eldest son and at only 19, he was the heir to the throne, he was the new Chief Gambiza.

So, the elders had come to the school, not only to announce the unfortunate passing on of Chief Gambiza, but to announce that the pupil at the school, Mathew, was no longer the ordinary deceased’s first-born child, but has immediately become a traditional leader back in the village.

Today, a year has gone-by since the passing on of Chief Gambiza in November 2018, and last month, his son Mathew, who was still in school then, commemorated his first anniversary as a traditional leader, probably one of the youngest traditional leaders in Zimbabwe.

At only 20 years, he found himself juggling between his school work and his duties as a traditional leader.

Presiding and passing judgments on cases to do with marriages, mending broken marriages as well as giving lectures on how to lead a marriage life when he is a bachelor.

“At first it was a somewhat bizarre scenario; presiding over cases involving say a 75-year-old and 65-year-old couple brought before me when I am as young as I am.

It was difficult, but because my father had assembled a wise counsel which is helping me, I am finding the going getting better and easier,” said the otherwise media-shy Chief Gambiza.

He says he is assuming his late father’s role and was fitting well into his shoes.

Cruising in a mint Isuzu KB 4×4 double cab chief’s vehicle, the young Chief Gambiza says the Government-allocated vehicle was making his job to juggle between school and chieftainship duties easier.

“I had to quickly learn to drive. And now I am a holder of a Class Four driver’s licence.

I am still in school, supplementing my subjects, so during the week, I at times drive to St Patrick’s High School to do my classes, and on Saturday, I am at the traditional court presiding over cases,” said Chief Gambiza.

He said he is also trying to keep his father’s legacy and was into farming, his father’s passion.

“My father was a passionate farmer, so is my mother. My mother helps me a lot on the farming side, so we are trying to keep our father’s legacy alive.

“I am also happy that I have a very vibrant and supportive team which gives me counsel during our traditional court, so everything is good.

We just picked up from what my father left, and we trying to do everything in accordance to the Traditional Leaders Act and what my father used to do,” said the young traditional leader.

Chief Gambiza said he was raring to go, adding that he felt the leadership role was in-born.

He said his role as a traditional leader will not hamper his educational ambitions, but would rather help his dream to achieve more goals in life.

“I can’t say my career path has been disturbed by the new role that came at a tender age.

Kings and chiefs are born and not made, so I think and believe that it was God’s making that I become a chief at this age, so it will even inspire me to become what I want to be in terms of my academic endeavours,” he said.

Asked how he was presiding over marriage issues when he was still young and single, the chief said: “I have learnt the art; as I said I have a team around me, I am mastering the art. What I do is pass judgment on what my wise counsel would have agreed and deliberated on,” he said.

On marriage, he said he was not under any pressure to marry anytime soon.

Son to a chief who was the first crop of traditional leaders to be incorporated into the Parliament of Zimbabwe under the Chiefs’ Council around 2005, Chief Gambiza said his dream was to walk in his father’s shoes.

In his parting words, the young intelligent and handsome traditional leader urged his people to respect what he embodies and not his age.

“I am, however, happy that the people of Chiwundura are tolerant.

“We are working together very well, and they understand that when we are before the courts, we are not looking at age, but at what the law says.

“I also try to spend much of my time studying the Traditional Leaders Act,” he said.

“As a business, though we have met some challenges, we have continued to grow and expand.

Proof That Mining Alone Can Save Zimbabwe… USD$15 billion Stolen Might Still Be Speculative

By Julias Muguwe|Once again I write in my capacity as a Competent Registered Geoscientist with SAIMM-(South African Institute Of Mining and Metallurgy), A fellow of the Geological Society of England (GEOSOL) and a competent person with SACNASP ( South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions).

“It is imperative for the nation to understand why I say mining alone can change the Zimbabwean economy. I will elucidate in my next write ups the basic geology and general mining knowledge that the nation needs to understand about Mining in Zimbabwe, with particular emphasis on the Great Dyke. The Great Dyke is a naturally god given linear geological feature which is about 550kms trending north-south across Zimbabwe and does play host to vast ore deposits including gold, copper, nickel, silver, chromium, asbestos and Platinum Group of Minerals (PGMS). Thereafter I will talk about the Chiadzwa Diamonds and Gold deposits”.

I write this with a heavy heart. My second job after graduating was as a Projects Geologist for Hwange Colliery from 1993-1996 after leaving Shabanie and Mashaba Mines (1992-1993). Hwange Colliery was one of the star mines in fact it was amongst the top 3 big ones.

During my stay there, I was responsible for exploration in and around the mine. I managed to delineate and delimit the extent of Hwange coal seams both opencast-able and underground mineable. The life span of the mine was extended by more than 40 years through my work under the supervision of Resident Geologist Mr Maponga whom I am told is now a lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe.

Former deputy minister Freddy Moyo was the Mine Manager, the late Kudzayi Ibwerinofa was the MD, and Mr Rugare Gumbo was the Human Resources Manager. This was the beginning of the political mess at Hwange. I am not surprised that such a venture was and has been milked to the extent of failing to pay employees with such a vast reserve base.

For your own information I drilled in the Hwange Game Reserve where we would encounter lions in the mornings at our drill rigs. I would like to state that there are underground coal seams 3-6 metres thick as logged by myself, of which I did not even know the limits beyond the game reserve.

What I concluded was the deeper they got the better the grades in terms of ash content. The Hwange Colliery debacle involved among other issues a transport supplier harassing and intimidating a board chair using the Presidents’ office in the new dispensation.

This was just an annex of the numerous political disasters that have crippled the mining Industry. My fellow geologists, especially the ones who have had opportunities to practice outside Zimbabwe had hoped that one day, we will be back to impart and use the experiences and exposure gained outside the Zimbabwean borders in our motherland, but that now appears remote as appointments are done on partisanship. The levels of corruption in mining are beyond repair!

I still don’t understand how Hwange Colliery was destroyed, but if you look at the management mentioned above, it was a partisan management and my heart bleeds to know that a company like Hwange Colliery is being threatened with administration.

Whilst some of these appointees have the professional qualifications, they do in the end jeopardise their integrity as most decisions are made on political grounds, benefitting a few at the expense of the nation. The following questions do then arise from all this:

(1) Do we have the right people in the Mining industry at the top in Zimbabwe?

(2) Are all these so-called mining deals and ventures benefitting politicians or the nation? It is very interesting to note that when diamonds were discovered at Chiadzwa and Marange our government and the army went in like vultures. No ongoing exploration and reinvestment plans were put in place as soldiers and police suddenly became mining engineers.

No feasibility studies were fully conducted. If we do not know how much diamonds were there initially, how much were mined and how much are still in situ how did we come up with a US$15 Billion loss? This may still may still be speculative, could even be more.

When the weathered sub-surface was all mined they got stuck with the hard conglomerate, which they found difficult to mine without using proper blasting and recovery techniques. This was now beyond the military man’s capacity. Geomechanics and structural geology is not a subject studied at a military academy. That was a dead end and the nation was told diamonds are finished.

Where is the proof? What we have is proof that the mining industry is being run by people with no idea, not good enough technically. People running this ministry have no track record of even managing a green field project to full production. Have never managed a feasibility study to production neither have they defined a resource.

So many blunders have been made in our mining.ie BHP Minerals. PGMs (Platinum Group of Minerals) were mined even though the layman only knew that Platinum was being mined. For the layman some of the minerals are as listed, platinum, palladium, thorium, rhodium, iridium, osmium and as well as nickel, cobalt copper and gold.

Platinum (PGMs), gold, copper and Nickel were mined by BHP minerals during their short stint. It might as well be a tall order to know exactly how much of the Great Dyke minerals were actually exploited by BHP Minerals between 1995-1999.

Whilst BHP closed because of grade and ground instability issues leading to low production, I still believe if a proper geomechanics study had been conducted the closure could have been avoided. (a story for another day). These are few examples of how the mining industry is being thrown into a mess by being headed by men with little exposure or knowledge in mining.

We have a crop at the top in the Mining Industry that gets animated with signing of Exclusive Prospecting Rights by foreign investors, thereby politicising such ceremonies. This is why they end up flanking the president announcing fictitious oil discoveries.

This crop lacks the experience of coming up with better mining deals that brings about growth and development of the nation as well as improving the lives of all at large. The crop at the top does not think that minerals we are exporting are the ones we are also buying i.e. in the form of lithium batteries for example.

A crop that is harnessed in thinking, they don’t think beyond sinking a mineshaft. It is a crop that does not have vision of how economic geology and mining relates to other production sectors!

Where there is a mine potential they only see a corrupt line of making money through signing and via tenders and hence we end up with cartels in i.e. transport, mine suppliers etc. They don’t embrace economic Geology. We may be the largest coal producer but we have no electricity and yet using coal power can be generated.

We produce lithium but we still import lithium batteries, we have vast chrome deposits but we can’t even have chromium-plating Industries. We can’t make our own number plates for cars and street names. What a shame! How on earth does a big company like Rio close 3 mines on the basis of lack of forex and yet they mine the gold? It’s so sad this is where we are and all what we have.

As mentioned above I will talk about the Great Dyke Potential, the Chiadzwa Diamonds, oil discoveries and Gold Mining. Watch the space and smile, rocks are friendly!!

Malema Recruits G40 Members Into EFF

EFF leader Julius Malema made a call to former Zimbabwean ministers currently in exile in South Africa to put aside their differences and join the Red Berets in a move that would consolidate their efforts and give them a fighting chance in their quest to overthrow the current administration led by President Emmerson Mnangagwa.

Just days after Malema made this call, former Zimbabwean minister of public service, labour and social welfare, Patrick Zhuwao, has applied to join the EFF.

“Consequently, I have applied to join EFF as a fighter and ordinary card carrying member in a branch within Gauteng Province. I am happy to work as a ground fighter. I do not seek elected office; as a refugee I am not eligible anyway,” Zhuwao told City Press.

“I have already served in senior leadership positions within Zanu-PF from the time I was elected district secretary (similar to subregion) in 1995 and rose through region, province and national levels to the Zanu-PF politburo. I am putting aside my ego to help Africa develop a political culture that detracts from the entitlement mantra that has become so pervasive in liberation movements. We must fix the continent,” said Zhuwao.

Explaining his decision, Zhuwao said all Zimbabweans were adversely affected by the manner in which the current administration had taken power.

“It’s not just exiled [former president Robert] Mugabe ministers who are affected but other economic and political refugees from Zimbabwe who are scattered throughout South Africa, the continent and the whole orld,” said Zhuwao.

A cocktail of corruption, abuse of office, sanctions, drought and the shortages of foreign currency has left half of Zimbabwe’s population facing hunger.

The shortage of power and fuel has also left the country at an annual inflation estimated at 440%, the second-highest in the world.

The differences between Mnangagwa and opposition leader Nelson Chamisa have also contributed to the country’s economic crisis as it is sharply divided along partisan lines, with institutions polarised and the international community not warming to the current administration.

Speaking to City Press, Zhuwao said the militarised nature of the Zimbabwean state meant that “the Zanu-PF junta would never allow anyone who is not their puppet or stooge to assume power”, hence the need for those in exile to pursue different avenues to unseat the administration.

He said in the absence of reforms from those planning to contest the 2023 elections, their actions would be an exercise in futility.

“It boggles the mind why anyone in their right state of mind would expect to contest elections in 2023 and expect to be allowed to dislodge the military controlled Zanu-PF in the absence of reforms,” said the former minister.

At its recent national people’s assembly, the EFF announced a resolution take by delegates to establish a consolidated EFF across the continent.

Malema said it was imperative for the party to establish a continental structure – to be headed by its former secretary-general Godrich Gardee – so that the united front would disrupt the air of entitlement with which most liberation parties were now going about their leadership.

He also said the administrations of Mnangagwa and eSwatini’s King Mswati III could only be overcome by a united show of force from his party’s envisioned continental structure.

“I agree with CIC Malema’s view that Mnangagwa can be defeated. Chamisa won the 2018 presidential election which was stolen as proven in Professor Jonathan Moyo’s Excelgate book. Whilst I am not a member of MDC, I however respect the democratic expression of Zimbabweans who electorally expressed their wish for Chamisa to be president of Zimbabwe,” Zhuwao said.

The EFF already had parties who appropriated the Red Berets’ name in Namibia, Liberia, Malawi and Zimbabwe.

EFF Namibia recently gained two parliamentary seats in the country’s Parliament.

Mliswa Mocks ZIFA President Over UEFA Chief’s Visit

Jane Mlambo| Motor-mouth Norton legislator, Temba Mliswa has said that ZIFA president Felton Kamambo and his deputy Philemon Machana will not overcome the now COSAFA President Philip Chiyangwa following his hosting of UEFA President who is currently in the country on a 10-day visit.

Kamambo and Machana are currently engaged in a bitter war with Chiyangwa whom they accuse of abusing his office during his tenure.

Posting on Twitter, Mliswa said;

“Phillip Chiyangwa hosting UEFA boss Ceferin is indeed a great occurrence and shows how Fidza is well connected. Kamambo and Machana are indeed small boys who can’t do him anything. Well done Fidza for promoting tourism through football.”

“Kamambo and his pals should read the writing on the wall, Fidza is connected and dethroning him is a waste. He should now help us remove these guys. He has been given this task together with the SRC i don’t know why he has not started, investigations on them should start,” said Mliswa.

Chamisa said the visit was refreshing as it allowed him to tap into the wisdom of village elders.

“Taking time to visit, listen to and interact with kith and kin this holiday in Gutu..Enjoying every moment here at my rural village. The deep wisdom of the elders is so amazing. The outpouring of the love is humbling.I always find these engagements refreshing and grounding,” said Chamisa.

Kadoma Prophet’s Extra Marital Affairs Exposed

A popular Kadoma prophet and leader of the Royal Family International Ministries had an extra marital affair with one of his congregants whom he reportedly dumped after having his child.

Prophet Charles Pintec had the illicit affair with one Grace whom he then decided to neglect after having his child prompting her to expose the secret affair she had with the man of God.

Charles Pintec with Grace

According to a source who spoke to H-Metro, Prophet Pintec fell madly in love with Grace to the extent of impregnating her but when the woman gave birth, the man of God decided to dump her.

Out of anger and bitterness, the woman is said to have started spreading pictures of her and Pintec during their good days on social media so as to expose Pintec to his congregants and the whole world.

“Prophet Pintec of Royal Family Church is a well-respected man by his congregants but his actions have proved otherwise.

“He had secret extra marital affair with one of his congregants Grace to the extent of siring a child with her and he decided to quit the relationship after the birth of the child.

“This did not go down well with Grace so she started exposing the Prophet by sending pictures of her and the man of God during the subsistence of their relationship so the man is now the talk of the town,” said the source.

When H-Metro contacted Pintec to get his side of the story, he pleaded guilty to the accusations and apologised to everyone who might have stumbled upon the pictures of him and Grace during their good days.

“What you heard is very true but it is part of my past and it was a moment of madness which I regret a lot as a man of God.

“It is a regrettable past and I would like to apologise to everyone who came across those pictures.

“It has been seven months now since I parted ways with the lady in question and it is also true that I had a child with her but it is past now and I do not know why people would want to bring this up now.

“I know people just want to tarnish my image and the image of the Ministry because of things that happened a long time ago,” said Pintec.

Tragic End To Relish Scuffle As Byo Man Torches Lovers House

A MAN from Bulawayo’s Emakhandeni suburb allegedly torched his lover’s house after failing to burn her alive upon dousing her with petrol on Christmas Eve following a scuffle over relish.

Jabulani Mafu (47) a live-in boyfriend to Ms Malelewo Mathema (45) is alleged to have become violent after she served him relish he disliked.

It could not be established yesterday what relish Mafu was served.

Bulawayo police spokesperson Chief Inspector Precious Simango said the relish sparked the fight between the two live-in lovers.

“We are investigating a case where a 47-year-old man is said to have poured petrol on his girlfriend aged 45 years, both from Emakhandeni suburb. The suspect is said to have been infuriated by the relish his girlfriend served him. The suspect who is on the run is said to have stormed out of the house before returning with a five litre container which had petrol. He is alleged to have poured the petrol on her. She however managed to overpower him to escape from the house,” said Chief Insp Simango.

She said after her escape, Mafu poured the petrol on property in the house before setting the property alight.

Chief Insp Simango said in the process R6 000, US$200 and $280 was lost to fire.

“Other household properties that include a bed, a sofa, refrigerator, home theatre set, clothes among other things were burnt,” said Chief  Insp Simango.

She urged members of the public to solve their differences amicably.

Chronicle news crew yesterday visited the house and found it deserted.

The burnt property was removed from the house and left outside.

Their neighbour, Mr Abednico Ngulube said it was not the first time for Mafu to be violent.

“It is being claimed that the fight was over relish but I suspect it was over money. Their relationship had seriously soured and we recently advised her to report him to the police. She no longer wanted him, ubegciniwe (she took care of him) but he was refusing to leave. It’s not shocking to learn that he wanted to kill her, he was very violent. The previous day they had fought over money. I know he forcefully took US$10 from her on that day which he spent on alcohol before coming to cause violence that same night,” said Mr Ngulube.

CHITUNGWIZA based Zim dancehall chanter, Champz Mativi – real name Epilogue Mutunya – was recently bashed by thugs while coming from a studio around midnight.

Champz Mativi, who could not identify the hooligans who attacked him, suspects foul play from his former colleagues who used to be in his music clan called Big Mero.

He also believes that envy and jealous could be others causes of his recent attack.

The chanter narrated how he was attacked.

“I was coming from the studio around midnight when I got attacked.

“The producer walked to a certain spot and left me alone as he went to his place.

“While I was alone, three thugs that I could not identify attacked me violently.

“They bashed me, took my iPhone 10k, soundcard, pants and shoes.

“I, however, recovered my iPhone 10k in Zengeza 2 at shops since it has a tracker,” said Champz Mativi.

Met Office Predicts Wet Weekend

While sunny and hot conditions will prevail over most of Zimbabwe, isolated thundershowers are expected in some parts of the country today, with the weather expected to be cooler and windy by the weekend.

In a statement yesterday, the Meteorological Services Department (MSD) said all areas should continue to be mostly sunny and hot with brief cloudy periods that may be coupled with thundershowers in some places.

Towards evening, the MSD said a cool breeze is expected to start attenuating the heat over the south eastern provinces of Masvingo, Matabeleland South and Manicaland.

“Such thundery phenomenon is usually superseded by lightning. This poses a potential threat to persons in an open field as well as the tallest objects such as trees and                                                                              poles. Household electrical gadgets are also not spared. Gusts of wind pose a danger of unsecure roof tops being blown off,” said MSD in the statement.

It further urged people to avoid standing next to tall objects or being in an open field during a thunderstorm, adding that where possible people must switch off all electrical gadgets to safeguard life and property.

“In the event of strong winds, make an effort to seek shelter in a house or structure that can withstand strong winds.

“Noting that isolated shades are not safe as they are also prone to lightning strikes.

“Children need to be kept in-doors when a thunderstorm approaches or when there is strong wind as they are at risk of lightning or flying objects such as blown off roof sheets,” further reads the statement.

According to the MSD, some places such as Matabeleland North and Mashonaland West received light showers yesterday with Hwange receiving 9mm and Kariba 4mm by yesterday morning.

The department forecasted a normal to above normal rains during the first half of the season (October, November, December).

Some farmers are, however, concerned with the persistent hot and dry conditions which are beginning to affect some crops in different parts of the country.

OPINION: “If I Brought Suffering, Condemn Me!” said Mnangagwa

By Nomusa Garikai|”We cannot allow isolated voices, which have no platforms, speaking more than us (Polad) who are a collective. Collective voices should be heard more than isolated voices in the jungle,” said Mnangagwa.

“I am happy that we all accept that peace is critical … harmony is equally important. If we all preach peace, unity and harmony in the country, then we expose those who have brought suffering (in the country). If it is my party which has brought suffering or violence, it must be condemned and also any other party, whether in Polad or in the wilderness.”

“I see that with the spirit of Polad, we can sustain this conversation, this dialogue. But we need to be more vocal, to be heard, to pronounce ourselves on all issues, to show that we are alive, vibrant. We need to show that we are working on all issues that affect this country.”

Mnangagwa is just a village thug who is too clever by half! He thinks he can continue to claim the moral high ground of the peacemaker by hold high the olive branch and yet the dagga in his other hand is dripping with the blood of more of his wanton violence victims.

“If it is my party which has brought suffering or violence, it must be condemned!”

Anyone who is anyone condemned last year’s elections as a farce.

“The electoral commission lacked full independence and appeared to not always act in an impartial manner. The final results as announced by the Electoral Commission contained numerous errors and lacked adequate traceability, transparency and verifiability,” stated the EU Election Observer Mission final report.

“As such, many aspects of the 2018 elections in Zimbabwe failed to meet international standards.”

Zanu PF blatantly denied 3 million Zimbabweans in the diaspora a vote, for Pete’s sake! How are Zimbabweans supposed to judge you when you deny them a democratic voice!

As much as you, President Mnangagwa would like to claim that last year’s elections were free, fair and credible the truth is they were not.

As much as you want to claim the ZEC results were “the voice of the people, the voice of God!” the truth with with no verified voters’ roll no one could ever verified whether those people were real or fake!

Today Zimbabwe is facing a real and immediate existential threat, the economic meltdown is cause serious human suffering and unnecessary lose of lives. The country’s health care, for example, has all but completely collapsed and hundreds of people are dying of easily treatable ailments. The situation cannot be allowed to continue. The country needs a way out.

The only way out is for Zanu PF to accept that the party rigged last year’s elections, step down and allow the nation to reset its failed political system. Step down now, with each day this corrupt, incompetent and tyrannical regime remains in power hundreds of innocent lives are lost and the nation is being dragged closer and close to the edge of the precipitous abyss.

After 39 years of gross mismanagement, rampant corruption and tyrannical lawlessness; Zanu PF must go now. Enough is enough, Zimbabwe has had enough of these Zanu PF thugs!

“I had the privilege to work with Mr Mapingire on the weekly cabinet briefings, a governance innovation tool of the Second Republic of President Emmerson Mnangagwa. A high minded public servant, Mapingire’s work was marked by keen sense of patriotic duty, and an intense work ethic,” she said.

Govt Meets Grain Millers Over Mealie-Meal Supplies

Roller meal supplies are set to improve after today’s meeting between the Government and millers.

Millers and representatives of five ministries and State agencies are expected to fix the long delays in registering millers and speed up the distribution of subsidised roller meal.

Government early this month scrapped general maize subsidies and replaced them with a specific and targeted subsidy on roller meal produced by approved and registered millers.

However, there have been delays in getting the subsidised product to the market in sufficient quantities, largely because of time taken to register millers.

Millers are expected to meet today the representatives from the Ministries of Industry and Commerce, Finance and Economic Development and Lands, Agriculture, Water and Rural Resettlement, plus the Grain Marketing Board (GMB) and the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (Zimra).

The switch from a general grain subsidy to a particular product subsidy was meant to ensure that market prices prevailed throughout the system, except on the wholesale and retail prices of the actual subsidised product, thus removing market distortions that led to widespread cheating and inefficiencies.

The switch also ensured that the full budget for the subsidy was applied to just the product eaten by the most vulnerable households.

Industry and Commerce Minister Dr Sekai Nzeza said her officers were working flat out to resolve problems in the registration of millers to ensure adequate supplies are delivered to the market.

“I am surprised that the process is taking long as the team is working hard to register millers,” she said.

“However, we need to resolve this matter quickly and there should be no shortages at all,” she said.

The Finance and Economic Development Ministry ordered the registration of millers on December 13.

Some millers have expressed concern over the slow registration process.

They are now withholding stocks fearing that they may not be registered at all.

Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) media and public relations manager Mr Garikai Chaunza confirmed today’s meeting.

“We have more than 60 millers who are yet to be registered and we are glad that the authorities have called them all to attend the meeting to discuss and iron out all sticking issues.

“Millers have roller meal in their stocks and they are holding on to it pending the registration process by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce, whose process they are saying is not moving.

“They are saying they are being taken from one office to another for the past two weeks, but without getting any assistance and it is our hope that Government moves the process so that millers release their stocks,” he said.

Government has committed to provide 40 000 tonnes of maize to millers for subsidised roller meal production each month, starting this month.

This should satisfy the projected demand of 32 000 tonnes of roller meal a month.

“Feed People Not Fish,” Chamisa Blasts Mnangagwa Over His Cosy Fish Feeding With Khupe

President Emmerson Mnangagwa (in scarf) during the weekend tour of his Sherwood Farm in Kwekwe, where he showed off his prowess to his Political Actors Dialogue members.

OPPOSITION MDC leader Nelson Chamisa yesterday took a swipe at President Emmerson Mnangagwa over a video that went viral on social media of him feeding his fish at his Kwekwe farm at the weekend, saying the Zanu PF leader had misplaced priorities at a time millions of Zimbabweans are in urgent need of food aid.

The United Nations estimates that 7,7 million citizens are in urgent need of food aid, while US$300 million is required to supply some 240 000 tonnes of handouts.

The MDC president said he was going into the Christmas holiday depressed knowing that millions of Zimbabweans will be without food, fuel, power and freedom.

“Any serious and credible leader’s core business is the well-being and interest of the people they lead. On that score, I walk into the Christmas holiday depressed, challenged and burdened because my thoughts, mind and conscience are with the people of Zimbabwe who are suffering. They are suffering because we have deprived them of happiness and merrymaking. They are without cash, without fuel, without electricity, without water and even without freedom,” Chamisa said.

He said it was a difficult period for Zimbabweans, and he hoped that “this will be a vivid reminder of the urgency of our situation, the extraordinary circumstances”.

“I wish I could have the luxury of feeding my fish at the farm with my friends, but I can’t. It is just impossible. We must feed the people not the fish,” Chamisa said, in apparent reference to a video that featured Mnangagwa, MDC leader Thokozani Khupe and other Political Actors’ Dialogue (Polad) platform leaders at Mnangagwa’s farm.

Mnangagwa met Polad members at his farm at the weekend.

Chamisa said he sympathised with the people of Zimbabwe who will miss the usual delicacies usually associated with the festive season.

“I sympathise with the people and feel with them, the definition of a sensitive leader. The way Zimbabwe is suffering, high school fees, dysfunctional hospitals; in other countries, people are busy having their best meals, their delicacies on Christmas and visiting best places. But in Zimbabwe, the situation is different. I was in Germany, I could feel the sense of Christmas, but that is not the situation in Zimbabwe. (A) sad indictment of those in leadership. Instead of dispensing love, they are dispensing agony and sorrow,” Chamisa added.

Aircraft Crashes In Kazakhstan With 100 People On Board

The wreckage

At least 12 people have died after a Bek Air plane with almost 100 people on board crashed near the city of Almaty in Kazakhstan shortly after taking off.

The Fokker 100 aircraft, heading for the capital, Nur-Sultan, on a pre-dawn flight on Friday, “lost altitude during takeoff and broke through a concrete fence” before hitting a two-storey building, Kazakhstan’s Civil Aviation Committee said in a statement.

In a statement posted on social media, Almaty International Airport also said 22 people suffered severe injuries and were taken to two hospitals.

The Almaty healthcare department had earlier said that at least 15 people died. This figure was scaled down to 14 by government officials.

The higher figure was the result of confusion on the ground, a spokeswoman for the department said.

A survivor told English-language news website Tengrinews she heard a “terrifying sound” before the plane started losing altitude.

“The plane was flying with a tilt. Everything was like in a movie: Screaming, shouting, people crying,” she said.

Images posted on social media showed several rescue personnel digging through the wreckage of the Bek Air aircraft.

A special commission is investigating the circumstances leading to the deadly incident, airport officials said.

The crash site in Almerek village – just beyond the end of the runway – has been cordoned off.

In a statement published on social media, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev expressed his condolences to the friends and families of those killed in the crash.

“All those injured will be rendered assistance. All those responsible will carry severe punishment in accordance with the law,” Kazinform news agency quoted the president as saying in the Kazakh language.

The company manufacturing the aircraft went bankrupt in 1996 and the production of the Fokker 100 stopped the following year.

All Bek Air and Fokker 100 flights in Kazakhstan have been suspended pending the investigation of the crash, the country’s authorities said.

Govt Clears Use Of Automatic Vehicles For Driving Tests Following Citizens Petition|Rwanda

Rwandan Ministry of Infrastructure (Mininfra), simular to Zimbabwe’s Transport Ministry, has finally given a green light for prospective drivers to use cars with automatic transmissions during driving tests to acquire a driver’s license.

The development follows a petition by a private citizen to parliament in April 2018, which sought to amend the law on acquisition of driving licenses to allow for the use of automatic cars.

The petitioner, Frank Shumbusho, among others argued that “there are many people who own automatic cars and know how to drive them but are unable to do so because sitting for a driving exam requires one to have knowledge of a manual car.”

In an exclusive interview with The New Times, Alfred Byiringiro, the Transport Division Manager in the ministry, said that the petition was a catalyst to the move.

“After that citizen’s petition, the ministry and parliament sat together and resolved that the law should be amended, because the use of automatic transmission cars in driving tests won’t be invented by Rwanda; it is even done elsewhere,” he said.

“For now, we are about to submit a draft law in parliament concerning the amendment of the current law governing road traffic.”

He said that after that draft law is passed, they will follow with the amending of the Presidential Order which is the one that so far stipulates how driving tests are done.

“Among others, we will add in the use of cars with automatic transmission in driving tests,” he added, noting that: “The amended law will start being implemented at the start of next fiscal year 2020-2021.”

The fiscal year begins in July.

The current law only recognises manual cars while conducting driving tests and any change to that effect would require changing the law.

“All in all, we will make sure that someone who gets a driving license whether using manual cars or those in automatic mode will do an exam that really qualifies him or her as a driver,” Byiringiro noted.

Petitioner reacts

Speaking to The New Times, Frank Shumbusho welcomed the move noting that it will benefit many Rwandans.

“I am happy that my concern was put into consideration by different stakeholders whom I had consulted.”

“This will benefit many people including me who has spent many years without a driving license regardless of the fact that I know how to drive an auto transmission car.”

Shumbusho also thanked legislators and the ministry for looking into petition, highlighting that; “There was also a possibility of defying it.”

The petition followed an increasing trend of auto transmission cars on Rwandan roads.

A source from Rwanda Revenue Authority in Customs Department noted that: “Though so far we don’t have statistics on the number of imported auto transmission cars in comparison with manual ones, I can personally estimate that 60% of them have automatic transmission.”

Jean-Luc Mugabo, the sales manager in CFAO Motors Rwanda, Volkswagen Rwanda’s official dealer, also told The New Times said that 70% of their vehicle sales are of automatic transmission.

John Mugabo, the Finance Manager at Toyota Rwanda, emphasized on their increasing sales of automatic transmission cars.

“Our clients’ preferences, different from before, are automatic transmission cars at an estimation of above 60 per cent especially in these small cars,” he said.

Mugabo added: “I can even say that one of the major reasons for the 40 per cent who prefer manual transmission cars is that they are more affordable as compared to auto transmission cars.”

The trend is global.

For instance, figures released by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders in 2018 showed that the number of cars with auto gearboxes in Britain among others rose by over 70 per cent since 2007.

People’s reaction

In a poll published on The New Times social media platforms in 2018, when asked whether the law should be amended to enable driving license exams to be conducted using automatic vehicles, 76 per cent of the 500 respondents answered ‘yes’ while 23 per cent answered ‘No’.

Arsene Niyongabo, a University student who drives a car with automatic transmission, welcomed the act.

“For me I think that can be a good move because many people fail driving tests not just because they don’t know how to drive, but because manual cars complicate the exams,” he told The New Times on Tuesday this week.

However, Niyongabo added that: “Legislators should be vigilant and make sure that they provide different licenses to differentiate people who are able to drive cars with automatic transmission only from those who are able to drive manual cars.”

“This will prevent many accidents because, obviously, manual cars require more skills than automatic transmission cars,” he noted.

On this, Byiringiro said that there will be two kinds of driving permits; one that will be given to someone who did the test using a car with manual mode and the other one to the person who used a car with automatic transmission.

Sangoma Paid Zahara R20k And Only Walks Away With A Mobile Phone Selfie Picture

SANGOMA Sibusiso Mathe is furious with Zahara.

The 38-year-old from Khayelitsha, Cape Town, told Daily Sun the artist owed him money.

READ: NO CASH FOR RICK ROSS!

He had booked her to perform at the End of the Year Music Festival in Khayelitsha, which took place last Saturday, but she didn’t show up.

“I’m very unhappy with what she did. I loved her so much but she disappointed me. I never received a proper apology. I just got a phone call to say she was sorry for what happened,” Mathe said.

The sangoma had booked a flight from Joburg to Cape Town for Zahara and her manager, but the artist apparently only rocked up after the show.

Mathe claimed he had already paid Zahara an appearance fee deposit of R10 000 of a total R 20 000 she was supposed to be paid for the performance.

He said: “I want my money back. I paid her R10 000. My expenses to bring her to Cape Town with her manager is another R10 000. She owes me R20 000.”

Fan Zizipho Mlenzane (30), who attended the event, said fans were expecting Zahara to perform.

“She is my favourite musician. It was the first time I was going to see her live,” she said.

“When she arrived I managed to take a selfie with her and I will cherish the picture.”

Zahara’s manager, Oyama Dyosiba, confirmed they were paid R10 000.

“We were paid the deposit for her to perform and the remaining amount was to be paid after the event,” said Dyosiba.

He said they only agreed to the R 20 000 because they wanted to support a friend.

“One of the guys who organised the event is my friend and became Zahara’s friend through me, so we agreed to perform for that amount. This is far less than Zahara’s performance fee.”

He told the People’s Paper Zahara arrived late because their flight was delayed.

“They had booked for an earlier flight for us to depart from Joburg at 10am, but we were delayed, hence we arrived late.”

Met Office Predicts Heavy Thunderstorms Into The Weekend

Controversial Businessman Frank Buyanga Sucked In Marry-Chiwenga Divorce

Zimbabwean businessman Frank Buyanga has been dragged into the messy divorce between that country’s 63-year-old vice president Constantino Chiwenga and his jailed wife, Marry.

Businessman Frank Buyanga

A report in the Zimbabwe Morning Post alleges that the South African-based Buyanga had been “scouting for properties” in South Africa on behalf of Chiwenga’s estranged wife.

The story in the online publication surfaced a few days after Marry was arrested and charged for allegedly taking huge sums of US dollars out of Zimbabwe.

The former model is also accused of trying to poison her husband.

Chiwenga, the former army general who deposed long time strongman Robert Mugabe, spent four months in China, where he received extensive treatment for a condition allegedly caused by poisoning.

Upon Chiwenga’s return a few weeks ago, he began divorce proceedings against Marry. She was arrested on December 15 and remains behind bars awaiting a bail hearing, which is scheduled for Friday.

However, Buyanga’s lawyer Estee Maman was quoted in the Post as denying that his client had any business or other relationship with Marry.

“I am fully acquainted with details of Mr Buyanga’s properties and the purchases made and can verify that this statement and claim made is false and completely baseless,” Maman said.

Zimbabwean sources suggest the report linking Marry Chiwenga and Buyanga may be part of moves by the Zimbabwean presidential couple to “get back” at Buyanga.

Although 40-year-old Buyanga recently complained that his former partner had sought president Emmerson Mnangagwa’s intervention in the matter, he would not be drawn to comment on the latest reports.

Until recently it was common cause that Buyanga and Mnangagwa’s son Emmerson Jr were friends. However, with the former pals now at loggerheads, secret dealings reportedly involving massive payments in US dollars the pair allegedly pocketed were coming to the fore.

Meanwhile, fresh reports from Zimbabwe claim that Buyanga and Mnangagwa Jr received over USD1 billion from Morocco and the prince of Saudi Arabia to lobby support for the latter’s inclusion into the African Union.

Man Burns Wife In Scuffle Over Relish

Chief Inspector Precious Simango

Lewis Matutu Grabs Farm, Forcibly Slaughters Goats, Pigs

Zanu PF Youth League Secretary Lewis Matutu has been taken to court by one Onisimo Zhavairo for allegedly invading his farm that he was allocated by government during the land reform exercise. The farm is located in Kwekwe.

Zvavairo is being represented by Tendai Biti Law. The application lodged at the High Court cites Matutu as the first responded and Ministry of Lands as the second respondent.

In the High Court application Onisimo Zvavairo alleges that Lewis Matutu invaded his farm on 19 December 2019 without an offer letter from Ministry of Lands.

Judge Kwenda has granted an interim relief in favor of Zvavairo requiring Lewis Matutu to leave the farm.

The court heard Matutu and his colleagues were armed with guns and had already slaughterd 15 goats and pigs while at the farm.

Matutu didn’t come to court and was also not represented by a lawyer. Source: Vantunews

Grace Mugabe Bundled Into A List Of Thugs Banned From Entering New Zealand

Own Correspondent|The New Zealand Government has banned visits from people involved in the killing of the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi.

It will also not grant visas to the wife of former President of Zimbabwe, Robert Mugabe.

The restrictions came into place at the start of December.

The instructions sent to Immigration New Zealand staff do not name those the Government has banned, but it says it holds a list of them.

The United Nations special rapporteur has said there is credible evidence that Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and other high-level officials are liable for the killing of Jamal Khashoggi.

Saudi authorities insist they were not acting on Prince Mohammed’s orders.

The Gulf kingdom put 11 unidentified people on trial behind closed doors for Khashoggi’s murder.

Earlier this week, a court in Saudi Arabia sentenced five people to death and jailed three others over the murder of Khashoggi.

The 58-year-old journalist, a US-based columnist for the Washington Post and prominent critic of Prince Mohammed, was last seen entering the Saudi consulate on October 2 last year to obtain papers he needed to marry his fiancée Hatice Cengiz.

The travel bans follow a similar move by the United States in April, when it issued restrictions against 16 Saudi Arabians, including a former aide to the prince.

Mohammed bin Salman himself was not on the US state department’s list.

Meanwhile, Grace Mugabe has also been added to the list of those under New Zealand visa restrictions.

She married Robert Mugabe, 41 years her senior, in 1996.

He ruled Zimbabwe for nearly 40 years before he was ousted in a military takeover in 2017 and died in September, aged 95.

She has been accused of assaulting a South African model, Gabriella Engels, and was named head of Zanu-PF women’s league in 2014.

Mnangagwa’s Top Official Dies

Head of Cabinet Secretariat in the Office of the President and Cabinet Mr Francis Sonny Mapingire has died.

He was 57.

Mr Francis Sonny Mapingire

Mr Mapingire succumbed to cancer of the colon at a private hospital in Harare on Christmas Day.

In a condolence message read on his behalf by Acting chief secretary, Ambassador Nicholas Dhlamini Kitikiti, the Chief Secretary to the President and Cabinet Dr Misheck Sibanda described Mr Mapingire as one of the most dependable officers who worked tirelessly and diligently to make the Cabinet system efficient and productive.

Dr Sibanda said they were looking forward to launching the e-Cabinet system with him in the New Year.

“It is with a deep sense of loss and sorrow at the untimely loss of a pillar of your family after a short illness. We had hoped that he was going to recover soon and join us back at work, but it was not so. His loss is not only to you but to all of us in the Office of the President and Cabinet and indeed the nation,” he said.

“We will all continue to cherish his contribution in the area of the Cabinet administration and indeed in other critical areas. May his family be comforted that he played his part in this whole process.”

His widow, Josephine, said he fell sick in 2017, had an operation and went through treatment before he fell sick again in September this year. He had a scan that confirmed his condition was recurring and he started deteriorating.

“He was a kind and generous man of God who was loved by a lot of people. He was a great father. He loved to talk to his children, mentor and teach them the values of life,” she said.

Family spokesperson and young brother, Mr Munyaradzi Mapingire said he will be buried tomorrow at his rural home in Zaka, Masvingo.

A funeral service will be held at 9am today at ZAOGA Braeside Christian Centre International before the body is taken to Zaka.

Brigadier’s Wife Sues Provincial Administrator $500k Over A Infidelity Charges

A BULAWAYO woman is suing Matabeleland North provincial development coordinator Ms Latiso Dlamini for $500 000 in damages for allegedly engaging in an adulterous relationship with her husband of 21 years.

The aggrieved woman, Mrs Siboniso Lesley Maseko (nee Gumede) is accusing her rival Ms Dlamini of Khumalo suburb in Bulawayo, of having a love affair with her husband Brigadier-General Simo Maseko.

Mrs Maseko said their marriage was solemnised in terms of Chapter 5:11 of the Marriages Act on December 20 in 1998.

Mrs Maseko, through her lawyer Mr Godfrey Nyoni of Moyo and Nyoni Law Firm, filed summons at the Bulawayo High Court citing Ms Dlamini as a defendant.

In papers before the court, Mrs Maseko said she discovered that Ms Dlamini and Brig-Gen Maseko have been seeing each other since 2017.

She said the two suspected lovers would meet at the defendant’s house among other secluded places.

“On diverse occasions and at various places including but not limited to Ms Dlamini’s place of residence, the defendant committed and still continues to commit adultery with my husband, Simo Maseko,” said Mrs Maseko.

She said despite Ms Dlamini being aware of their marriage, she remains defiant.

“I have further demanded that the defendant desists from continuing with her adulterous affair with my husband. Despite such demands, the defendant has continued with her actions,” said Mrs Maseko.

Mr Nyoni said as a result of Ms Dlamini’s actions, his client has suffered damages amounting to $500 000.

“As a result of the defendant’s actions, plaintiff has suffered damages for contumelia in the sum of $300 000. My client has furthermore suffered damages for loss of comfort, society, companionship and services of her husband in the sum of $200 000,” he said.

Mr Nyoni said Mrs Maseko wants the $500 000 to be paid with an interest of five percent calculated from the date of issue of summons to the date of full payment.

She also wants the court to order Ms Dlamini to pay the legal costs she incurred.

Ms Dlamini is yet to respond.

Bonne Guides Charlton Athletic To Victory

Farai Dziva|Macauley Bonne scored twice in Charlton Athletic’s 3-2 win over Bristol City in the English Championship on Thursday.

The 24-year-old broke the deadlock on the stroke of half time to thrust Charlton ahead in the 40th minute and his strike was the difference between the two sides at the break.

Bristol mounted an impressive come back in the second stanza, overturning their first half deficit to race to a 2-1 leaf but Bonne restored parity for his side in the 77th minute.

The Zimbabwean came back again and assisted the winner which was converted by Alfie Doughty in the 82nd minute. He now has eight goals in 18 appearances this season.

In the EPL, Marvelous Nakamba was not at his best in Aston Villa’s 1-0 victory against Norwich.

The midfielder played until the 56th minute as coach Dean Smith replaced him with Conor Hourihane who scored the winner eight minutes later.

This was his fifth successive start since his return to the first team this month.

The win sees Villa rise on points to 18 but remained in the drop zone after Match-day 19.

Chiyangwa Threatens To Sue ZIFA

Farai Dziva|Former Zifa boss Philip Chiyangwa has reportedly threatened to sue the association’s current lawyers after they reported him to the police.

Chiyangwa is being accused of abusing Zifa’s funds during his tenure, and the current administration, led by Felton Kamambo, through its lawyers Ngarava, Moyo and Chikono opened a case at the Commercial Crimes Unit at Harare Central Police Station.

According to NewsDay, the businessman has responded by writing to the lawyers, threatening to sue them for reporting him to the police and leaking information to the media.

Details have emerged in the past two weeks “exposing” how Chiyangwa milked the association.

The Kamambo administration also tried to forbid the ex-Zifa boss from taking part in all football-related activities, but the ban was reversed by FIFA.

Nakamba Shines As Villa Win

Aston Villa finally remembered how to win when they completed a double over Norwich City, courtesy of a 1-0 win at Villa Park on Thursday.

The Birmingham-based side had lost their last four games in the English top division, a situation which had increased pressure on manager Dean Smith but Conor Hourihane’s second half strike was decisive in earning much needed maximum points.

Marvelous Nakamba started for Villa but was taken off the second half, replaced by the match-winner in the 56th minute.

At Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard’s Chelsea succumbed to a 0-2 loss to Southampton courtesy of goals from Michael Obafemi and Nathan Redmond.Soccer 24

If Change Doesn’t Come We Will Go And Get It For The People -Chamisa

“There are complex challenges in Zimbabwe … We know there are serious and seemingly intractable political factors that might need attention, in fact, that needs attention if solutions are to be effective or implementable.

The political formations in Zimbabwe remain at loggerheads and have apparent deep antipathy toward each other which makes joint decision-making and planning extremely difficult,” said South Africa International Relations and Co-operation minister Naledi Pandor on November 18, 2019 at a symposium on the Best Path Towards a Prosperous Zimbabwe at the University of South Africa in Pretoria.

Pandor’s message came exactly two years after Emmerson Mnangagwa assumed power as President in November 2017 following a military coup that deposed long time ruler, the late Robert Mugabe.

Upon assuming power, Mnangagwa premised his message on rebuilding Zimbabwe, insisting on the need to “let bygones be bygones” and his swearing in was attended by Mugabe’s long-time nemesis, Morgan Tsvangirai (the late MDC leader), a clear sign that Mnangagwa meant well.

Two years down the line, all hope is slowly fading, and Mnangagwa is leading a deeply divided nation, plagued with economic challenges that observers insist, require a political solution.

Mugabe’s loyalists, better known as the G40 cabal, including former ministers, Saviour Kasukuwere, Jonathan Moyo, Patrick Zhuwao and Walter Mzembi, among others, remain exiled, fleeing possible persecution and prosecution at the hands of Mnangagwa.

Chamisa is on record describing Mnangagwa as having betrayed Tsvangirai after having earlier agreed to a “transitional mechanism” with him as part of the transition.
“Tsvangirai told me that ‘Chamisa, we are now going to help remove the poverty caused by Mugabe, but the assurance I have is that we are going to have a transitional authority’,” Chamisa was quoted as saying.

“I said to him, this was a good thing, but asked him if he was sure about the people he was dealing with and he said ‘let us give them time’. We gave them time and they betrayed my old man.”

According to a leaked intelligence report in early 2017, Mnangagwa and Tsvangirai allegedly engaged in secret talks to form an arrangement post-Mugabe, with Tsvangirai telling Reuters in June of that year that he would not rule out a coalition with political opponents, such as Mnangagwa, and wanted white farmers to come back into a “positive role”.

Tsvangirai supported the military intervention and Mnangagwa’s takeover, even rallying his supporters for the action at Parliament in the days Mugabe was about to be impeached.

Mnangagwa acted as if he meant well even by visiting an incapacitated Tsvangirai later on at his Highlands mansion, a sign that made many believe, the unifier was in town.

But alas, Mnangagwa pushed for polls and opted to go it alone, and it is that decision observers say which led to the prevailing socio-economic crisis that was to be born out of the unresolved July 2018 elections, and there is no hope for Zimbabwe as it stands.

In Chamisa’s words, had Mnangagwa not betrayed Tsvangirai and implemented the agreed transitional mechanism, the story would have been different.

Mnangagwa’s woes started after the July 30 harmonised elections, where the Zanu PF leader narrowly won, but his victory was challenged.

Moyo, a former government spin-doctor, claims Mnangagwa lost to Chamisa and evidence is supposedly contained in his book Excelgate, which was set to be launched last week before suspected Zanu PF supporters interrupted it, chasing out guests, including diplomats.

As Zimbabwe waited for results of the delayed presidential election results, soldiers shot and killed six people in Harare, injuring scores in the process after opposition supporters took to the streets protesting the delay.

A commission of inquiry into the killings led by former South African President Kgalema Monthlante called for unity among political actors and up to now, this and other recommendations are yet to be fulfilled.

Another huge dent on Mnangagwa’s administration was to come on January 14, hours after he sparked a fire that would lead to at least 17 deaths, more than 80 sustaining gunshot injuries, with more than 300 cases of torture at the hands of the police, the military and Central Intelligence Organisation operatives.

Mnangagwa made a surprise announcement of a 150% hike in fuel prices that led to violent protests across the country.
Shortly after making the announcement, Mnangagwa flew to Russia, but had to cut short the trip following the widely condemned attacks on civilians.

The January shootings were to be the beginning of a tough year for Zimbabweans, characterised by week-in, week-out price hikes of fuel, cash shortages, doctors’ and nurses’ strikes and hospital closures, among other challenges.

Over half the population is facing starvation caused by drought and a wobbly economy, with ordinary citizens evidently losing faith in the ruling party’s ability to resolve the crisis.

In its latest central committee report, Zanu PF stated that the economy remains a “latent security” threat, but blamed the United States, the MDC, some civic society organisations and even drought for its failure.

“The most latent security threat that has grave consequences is the unstable economy which is largely propelled by the thriving parallel market (black market),” the report by the party’s national security department read.

The report further stated that ordinary Zimbabweans have lost confidence in the direction the economy was going and were “angry”, while government also took to blaming natural disasters for the crisis.

“Formal trading prices are determined by the parallel market exchange rate which has been sharply rising on a daily basis.

This has resulted in inflation also rising to unprecedented levels. Prices of all commodities and services have followed suit to unsustainable levels. Most people are failing to make ends meet, so are poverty levels that are rising very much throughout the country. As a result, anger is brewing among the citizens, while there is loss of confidence on the direction the economy is taking,” the Zanu PF central committee report said.

“Owing to the incessant price hikes of commodities, food security situation is exacerbated by the fact that there were poor harvests experienced due to the El-nino induced drought.”

Zanu PF lamented the high unemployment in the formal sector due to company closures, and raised fears that unemployed graduates can be used by detractors to work against the ruling party.

The Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition blamed all this on the incumbent leadership that focuses on pettiness, giving the much-publicised divorce of Mnangagwa’s lieutenants, Vice-Presidents Constantino Chiwenga and Kembo Mohadi as examples
“The most unfortunate thing that we are lacking as a country is leadership,” Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition spokesperson Marvellous Khumalo said.

“Instead of the national leadership to focus on addressing the economic challenges that we have, the social, political and other related challenges that are bedevilling the country at the moment, we are witnessing a host of the sideshows taking place. The arrest of Marry Chiwenga, all this is being done and is raking attention from the leadership and the country at large yet we have important things, bread and butter issues to attend to,” he said.
“It is sad.”

Chiwenga is embroiled in a nasty divorce with his wife of eight years, Marry, and so far, a lot has been exposed and the VP is likely to be kept busy at the courts in 2020, joining Mohadi who has had violent confrontations with his estranged wife, Tambudzani, including an incident whereby the Vice-President chased after her at their Beitbridge home, armed with an axe and threatening to kill her.

Chiwenga accuses his wife of wanting to kill him while he was hospitalised in South Africa.

Marry, who is also accused of fraud and money-laundering involving close to US$2 million, was remanded in custody to December 30, but has made a High Court application for bail.

This comes after a lengthy absence from the political scene by Chiwenga, who was receiving treatment in China following suspected poisoning.

In Mnangagwa’s short reign, the police and military have launched a massive crackdown across the country, which has also seen MDC supporters being violently dispersed during gatherings in what the opposition party describe as “an unofficial ban” of the party and closure of the democratic space.

Several people, most of them ordinary Zimbabweans, were injured, while others were arrested last month ahead of Chamisa’s Hope of the Nation Address that was quashed by the police.

Chamisa was to survive an incident in which he claimed to have had gunshots targeted at him last month during a tree planting event in Marondera, although the police claimed otherwise.

But in the entire crisis, Chamisa yesterday said he would push for change in 2020.
Recently, he was also quoted as saying something would happen to change the lives of ordinary Zimbabweans by May 2020.

“My biggest Christmas gift is the hope I see in 2020. Change will come, if it doesn’t come, we go and get it for the people,” Chamisa said.

His statement also comes as former South African President Thabo Mbeki jetted into Harare last week to meet almost all political actors who included Mnangagwa, Chamisa, Political Actors Dialogue (Polad) and also with the churches on a “listening exercise” to understand the challenges affecting Zimbabwe.

Mbeki has promised to come back for more talks before year end.

While Mbeki has brought renewed hope to suffering Zimbabweans, with Chamisa warming up to possible dialogue with his nemesis convened by a neutral interlocutor, Mnangagwa dashed the hope by insisting that there would be no talks outside Polad, a grouping the main opposition party has sworn never to join.

Political analyst Eldred Masunungure thinks it is too early to celebrate.

Mbeki was at the centre of talks between Mugabe and Tsvangirai that led to the Global Political Agreement of 2009 that saw Tsvangirai becoming Prime Minister in Mugabe’s government, an arrangement that led to some brief stability before it ended in 2013.
Meanwhile, Kasukuwere has thrown his hat into the opposition political ring, vowing to challenge Mnangagwa if he chooses to answer to calls by a movement dubbed “Tyson Wabantu” that is pushing for him to lead.

Said Kasukuwere of the situation in the country: “It is not hatred of each other that will take our country out of this challenge, but a need to collectively confront the elephant in the room.

The pain in our society is deep and sharp. Let’s accept our failings and correct our steps. It’s the economy and politics.”

86 Year Old Gogo Rushed To Hospital Bleeding Badly After Being Raped By Great Grand Son

WHILE everyone else was celebrating Christmas yesterday, an 86 year old woman in the Matshetsheni area of Gwanda district was being brutally raped by her great-grandson who had just given her 30 Rand Christmas present after he returned home for the festive season.

Police in Gwanda confirmed the incident.

Villagers of the community say they have been left shell-shocked over the incident.

The culprit took advantage that most members of the community were busy celebrating the Christmas holiday at Nkazhe business centre in Matshesheni area, to rape his great-grandmother.

According to ZBC News, a neighbour who preferred anonymity told the broadcaster that the victim who is receiving treatment at Gwanda hospital was bleeding profusely when she came to her house calling for help around 3 am this Thursday.

“Gogo told me that she was sleeping in her hut when the suspect allegedly broke into and raped her. She came to me around 3.24 am to seek help. She bleeding badly and in a state of SHOCK,” she said.

It is alleged that earlier on Christmas day the suspected rapist visited his great grandmother and gave her 30 Rand before breaking into her home in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

A relative of the suspect said it was not the first time the alleged sexual predator has raped women in the family.

The accused is alleged to have raped his aunt in August 2011 before raping another 67-year-old relative on the 25th of December the same year.

The community alleges that the serial rapist committed similar crimes in Plumtree and Mbalalabala in the past before fleeing to South Africa.

Meanwhile, the suspected serial rapist has been arrested after being apprehended by members of the community this Thursday.

Mnangagwa Announces Plans To Unleash Military Onto Civilians Again In January Just As He Remains Grounded In Zimbabwe For First Time

– GROUNDED IN ZIM FOR FIRST TIME SINCE REMOVING MUGABE.

– ANNOUNCING ANOTHER ROUND OF LIVE AMMUNITION AGAINST CIVILIANS.

– SHUTTING OUT CHIWENGA, MDC FROM ALL OPPORTUNITIES OF TAKING OVER.

LAWYERS REVEAL TOTAL BREAKDOWN OF LAW AND ORDER

-STRIPPING CHIWENGA OF POWERS TO REPLACE HIM.

-MAKING VP, PROSECUTOR GENERAL, AND JUDGES MNANGAGWA’S OWN APPOINTEES SERVING AT HIS (PERSONAL) PLEASURE.

By Simba Chikanza| ANALYSIS | Somewhat running out of political-oxygen, an unrepentant Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced plans to once again use the security forces against civilians this coming January in ways previously condemned by the United Nations HQ in Geneva. Speaking in clear terms, Mnangagwa said this time he will ensure it will be done in total secrecy so that so called “oppostition elements” do not transform the evidence into what he termed “propaganda.”

This follows a long period stretching over a month the Zanu PF leader, has been caught on camera on several occasions, making loud visual-noises while holding his waist tight. The first time was on the day when his deputy general Constantino Chiwenga secretly flew into Zimbabwe. This was on the anniversary of his (Mnangagwa’s) coup presidency, the 23rd November after a mystery ridden 4 month medical sabbatical in China.

At a time when he is actually supposed to be on annual leave, Mnangagwa has remained ‘trapped’ at work while grounded inside Zimbabwe for the longest period ever since the day he usurped power in a military coup in 2017. What is going on and what is he planning? This short documentary details the man’s survival plans between 2019 and 2020.

While ZimEye’s efforts to get a direct comment from Mnangagwa at the time of writing were fruitless, the following were some factual findings so far.

The government spokesman Nick Mangwana told ZimEye:  “When HE leaves the country, you complain that he travels too much, he doesn’t stay at home. He stays at home you complain that he is not leaving the country. He is damned when he does and damned when he doesn’t. But being President, he always exercises his executive judgement.”

ANOTHER ROUND OF LIVE AMMUNITION AGAINST CIVILIANS.

Speaking at his party’s Goromonzi conference mid December, Mnangagwa revealed he is concerned about propaganda rather than human life losses. He clearly threatened to use the state apparatus to ensure secrecy when he carries out another crackdown. Last January when soldiers protested against the fuel price rise, (even criticised by pro ZANU countries such as Russia), his security minister switched off the internet for 3 days during which period 17 people were shot dead and several women raped. This time speaking at Goromonzi, Mnangagwa described the January 2019 protests where 17 people were killed by state agents as “nonsensical”.

“The January nonsense and periodic mischievous activities by the opposition elements such as those we witnessed this year must be nipped in the bud,” he said. “Never again shall we allow the loss of precious lives of our countrymen to feed the agenda of a notorious few.”

He repeated exactly what he told a French journalist earlier in the year, while blaming the MDC party for the mass murders which he did and while denying saying no one was killed.

Show me the graves, said Mnangagwa in the below interview. He also announced that he is hunting down every woman who reported rape.

From his own words, it is without guessing that the Zanu-PF leader is planning a repeat of the same operation this January.

SHUTTING OUT CHIWENGA, MDC FROM ALL OPPORTUNITIES OF TAKING OVER.

Another very clear plot by the zanu-pf leader is that of shutting out his deputy from the coup days, Constantino Chiwenga from ever taking over power. It has already been discussed he has put in place a mechanism to ensure that the opposition MDC party never gets a legal advantange to take over from him, and this by heaping the blame, legal and penal, for the killings on them.

When Chiwenga returned to Zimbabwe from his sabbatical, Mnangagwa’s spokeman George Charamba did not at all celebrate the miraculous return. Instead he splashed litres of ink attacking China’s deputy ambassador for conducting a welcoming ceremony for the vice president at the RGM International Airport ahead of of senior government officials. Chiwenga had secretly flown into the country, aboard a Chinese jet paid for by the Asian nation’s government. To this Charamba complained against the Chinese envoy saying, itsitsi dzei? – what kind of sympathy is that?

A Mubaiwa (Chiwenga wife) uncle has described Chiwenga’s jetting into the country as treasonous, alluding that he invaded Zim airspace without informing aviation authorities in advance.

STRIPPING CHIWENGA OF POWERS TO REPLACE HIM.

In less than 30 days of Chiwenga’s return, Mnangagwa rushed to accelerate a bill that reduces his deputy to a mere apppointee who will never be able to replace him.

This is detailed in the following legal advisory by the Law Society which has complained that there is now a breakdown of Law and Order, as Mnangagwa gathers to himself more powers than his predecessor Robert Mugabe possessed.

MAKING VP, PROSECUTOR GENERAL, AND JUDGES MNANGAGWA’S OWN APPOINTEES SERVING AT HIS (PERSONAL) PLEASURE.

FULL TEXT- On the 17th of December 2019, Cabinet at its 45th meeting approved several amendments to the Constitution. Some of the notable proposed amendments relate to the appointments of Vice Presidents, the Prosecutor General, Public Protector, promotion of judges and the terms of office of judges. The other notable proposed amendments relate to the composition of the provincial councils and the extension of the provision on the women’s quota which was scheduled to end in 2023.

The Constitution provides for its amendment. Although amendments to the Constitution are allowed these ought to be necessary for the promotion of the rule of law and protection of the principles of democracy. Our Constitution is a democratic document which came out of extensive consultations. It is a national document which should be enduring. Amendments to the Constitution must be necessary for the enhancement of enshrined rights, accountability and good governance. Amendments must not be retrogressive.

In terms of Section 92 of the Constitution a presidential candidate chooses running mates who upon election become the national Vice Presidents. The rationale for these provision was to introduce non-disruptive succession planning whilst ensuring that in the event of a Vice President taking over the office of President he would be having the people’s mandate. The effect of the proposed amendment to Section 94 means that Vice Presidents will no longer be elected but appointed by the President. This removes the transparency and democratic process sought to be achieved by Section 92 in relation to the assumption of these important offices. In addition, the Vice President’s tenure will be at the pleasure of the President. An amendment is expected to cure a problem or mischief. This is not apparent in the present case. The proposed amendments further seek to change the procedures for the appointment of the Prosecutor General. The current procedure for the appointment of the Prosecutor General is similar to that of the judges. This is a transparent way of appointing this important office, which like the judiciary ought to enjoy prosecutorial independence. The proposed amendment whereby the President appoints the Prosecutor General upon consultation with the Judicial Services Commission (JSC) is reverting to the old constitution. The current provisions promote transparency in the appointment process. This will not be achieved under the proposed amendment. It is not clear what mischief the proposed amendment seeks to address. The fact of the matter though is that the amendment is retrogressive. It emasculates a position that is pivotal to our criminal justice. The amendment will remove the Prosecutor General’s independence. The appointment system also does not guarantee meritocracy as the basis for appointment. This cannot be achieved by simply consulting the JSC. In any case in terms of section 339, such consultation may not be binding on the President.

Section 180 sets out the conditions that must be met in relation to the appointment of judges. The proposed amendment seeks to provide for the President to appoint a sitting judge to a higher court upon consultation with JSC. This approach seeks to reverse the elaborate, and transparent system currently in place. It is not clear why we should depart from the current system. The proposed changes will take us back to the pre 2013 era where judicial appointments were shrouded in a veil of secrecy.
The proposed extension of the tenure of judges albeit on a contract basis and subject to medical certification on fitness, is not desirable in a country with a vibrant legal profession. There are many legal practitioners who are fit to hold the office of judges.
The introduction of the office of the Public Protector should be based on a true desire to achieve administrative justice especially by public offices. The 2013 Constitution deliberately omitted this institution on the basis that the functions could be effectively undertaken by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission. The Ministry of Justice was recently lamenting that this commission is under resourced. Instead of properly funding the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission, the Cabinet is creating another institution which will have its own resource chewing bureaucracy. On the other hand, the present Constitution already provides for the establishment of an independent complaints mechanism to deal with misconduct by members of the security sector. This has not been instituted and yet Cabinet finds it necessary to create the public protector’s office. The Executive is failing to diligently and without delay perform all constitutional obligations as provided in Section 324.

The proposal to remove MPs and Senators from provincial councils also appear ill conceived. The presence of these members was supposed to bring the nexus between national and local development. The prosed amendments will perpetuate the disconnect between the national Programmes and the local/Provincial Programmes thus creating development inertia.

The Law Society of Zimbabwe reiterates that the provisions to the Constitution ought to be guarded jealously. Any proposed amendments to the Constitution should be for the people and by the people.

The Law Society of Zimbabwe further reiterates its position that the Constitution of Zimbabwe should be jealously guarded and protected in pursuance of the supremacy of the rule of law. The proposed amendments to the Constitution in the most, are unnecessary, retrogressive and are not in the interest of transparency, good governance and respect for the rule of law. Accordingly, the LSZ categorically denounces them.

Drama As Mangoma Impregnates Maid, Wife Squeezes His Privates Until He Faints

By Own Correspondent| The advice came following an incident in which a Zvishavane man reportedly passed out after his enraged wife lunged at him and grabbed his testicles in a vice-like grip after finding out he had impregnated their maid.

It is reported that on Saturday last week, during a heated argument at their home, Emily Svondo flew into rage and gave her husband Amos Mangoma a real piece of her mind when she forcibly grabbed his genitals and repeatedly squeezed them until he fainted.

According to a source when Svondo from Makwasha suburb latched on to her husband’s balls, she screamed saying he will never have sex again.

Svondo, the source said, was angry that her husband had relegated her by making her share his magic stick with their maid who was later sent packing.

“Trouble started after the seemingly suspicious Svondo asked their pregnant maid the man who was responsible for her pregnancy. When the maid revealed that it was her husband who had impregnated her, she (Svondo) repeatedly assaulted her with open hands before she bolted out of the house to confront her husband who was sitting at the verandah,” said the source who preferred anonymity.

The source further said the couple started quarrelling before the argument got physical as they exchanged blows.

“During that furious row the wife violently grabbed her husband’s genitals and squeezed them while shouting that he was not going to have sex again. The man who possibly could not bear the pain was writhing in agony thereby attracting the attention of their quick-witted neighbours who rushed to the house and rescued him by rendering first aid,” said the source.

Mangoma, who was overcome  with giult for having wronged his wife, refused to report her to the police.

After the near tragic incident, Mangoma’s parents who apparently felt their son was no longer safe at the hands of his wife took him to their rural home in Mazvihwa.

According to a source it was not the first time that Mangoma had been attacked on his groin by his wife as she once did it sometime last year after she found love text messages in his mobile phone.

When contacted for comment a hostile Svondo said she was not at liberty to share her marital problems with the Press. Mangoma’s comment could also not be obtained as his mobile phone was unreachable by the time of going to print.

Horror As Cheating Pregnant Woman’s Stomach Explodes

By Own Correspondent| A four months pregnant married woman drank poison and her stomach exploded leading to her death, after she was caught having sex with another man from her village.

The incident happened last week on Monday at Mairosi Village, Chisina 3, Ward 25 in Gokwe South.

A family source who requested  anonymity said:

“Reuben Mutemarinda (42) came home from a beer binge and  found his wife Ruth Kaurosi (34) having sex with Everisto Dzivarepasi. He tried to grab him, but he fled in boxer shorts and left his trousers and a shirt.”

A villager, Trynos Mataruka, said the deceased apologised before she killed herself.

“She apologised to her husband. But later on, she went to a nearby bush where she drank a cotton pesticide. She vomited and her stomach started to bulge. It burst while she was being ferried to Gokwe District Hospital where she died,” said Mataruka.

Mataruka added:

“Initially her husband refused to collect the corpse, saying Ruth must be buried at Dzivarepasi’s place. Some family elders tried to reason with him, but he stood his ground.

They had to report the matter to Chief Chisina who intervened by ordering Mutemarinda to collect the corpse and bury it. The burial was done last week on Thursday at Mairosi Village after the body had spent four days at the mortuary.”

Contacted for a comment Chief Chisina confirmed the incident.

“I can confirm that a woman Ruth Kaurosi (34) from Mairosi Village drank poison and later died at a hospital. Her stomach burst. But what worried us as community leadership is that Reuben Mutemarinda (42) was refusing to collect the remains of his wife from the mortuary.

He was saying she must be buried at Dzivarepasi’s place as he feels she disrespected him by sleeping with someone on their matrimonial bed,” he said.

Chief Chisina added: “I had to order Mutemarinda and his family to bury the deceased and I told them that any issue will be discussed after the burial.”

Chief Chisina said as of now he cannot comment on how Dzivarepasi will be punished.

“As for now I cannot comment on Dzivarepasi, I will wait for a report from Mutemarinda, after that I will be in a position to comment,” he said.

Ward 25 councillor, Chisina 3, Shungu Maruza said: “This is a shocking incident and I would like to advise members of the public to seek counselling whenever they encounter problems in their marital lives or at home in general.”

Mutemarinda said he would consult his family before formally reporting the adultery matter to the chief.

“I have to consult elders and kraal head Mairosi, after that I will make an official report to the chief because what Dzivarepasi did has lowered my dignity in the society and it’s the reason behind my wife’s death,” he said.

Efforts to get a comment from Dzivarepasi were fruitless

Prophet Sires Child With Congregant, Dumps Her

By Own Correspondent| A popular Kadoma prophet and leader of the Royal Family International Ministries had an extra marital affair with one of his congregants whom he reportedly dumped after having his child.

Prophet Charles Pintec reportedly had the illicit affair with one Grace whom he then decided to neglect after having his child prompting her to expose the secret affair she had with the man of God.

According to a source, Prophet Pintec fell madly in love with Grace to the extent of impregnating her but when the woman gave birth, the man of God decided to dump her.

When a local publication contacted Pintec to get his side of the story, he pleaded guilty to the accusations and apologised to everyone who might have stumbled upon the pictures of him and Grace during their good days.
