By Tinoonga Mawere, Bikita| MDC Treasurer General Theresa Makone subtly campaigned for the First Lady Grace Mugabe at the weekend.
Makone was captured pouring admiration for the Zanu PF Women’s League boss at a Rally here on Sunday.
She told about 500 MDC supporters in the Makuvaza area time was ripe for women to assume top leadership positions the Grace Mugabe style.
Makone voiced deep esteem for Mrs Mugabe’s errands across the country adding it pointed out to the potential women have in taking up leading roles in political institutions.
The controversial Tsvangirai anchor also said there was nothing wrong for a woman occupying a leading post in politics.
Although Makone spoke cynically about the First Lady, she still within the same message, expressed admiration for the president’ s wife and called on the women at the rally to take courage and stand up to be counted .
Grace who has hogged the limelight for contrasting reasons , has expressed intensions to assume the Zanu PF leadership and eventually the country’s presidency .
“Why are women afraid of taking up top posts in politics ? There is nothing wrong with a woman assuming a high post in politics. We are seeing what some women are doing and there is really nothing bad about it. We all must be courageous and at times we must emulate what others are doing. It is good for a woman to assume leadership and that is what we want,” said Makone at the rally.
She made constant cynical remarks praising Grace and lamented the fact that women were being suppressed in political circles adding women must support each other under such circumstances .
Makone’s rally ironically coincided with Grace’s whirlwind rally at Mushayavanhu Business Centre last Friday .
Political analysts here immediately said there was nothing coincidental in the statements but rather Makone wanted to praise the First Lady -hoping to earn recognition in Grace’s impending government.
It is now feared Grace who is known for spending lavishly could further drain the fragile economy if she happens to land the presidency .
Although MDC supporters at the rally attempted to pour cold water on the remarks, Makone visibly irked some of her colleagues who were not happy with the sentiments.
