Three pupils from Chinehasha Secondary School in Chiweshe communal lands have drowned while two others were rescued after a canoe they were using to cross Ruya dam capsized this Thursday morning.
A sombre atmosphere engulfed Chinehasha Village in Chiweshe following the drowning of the three on their way to school.
According to eyewitnesses the disaster occurred around 7 in the morning when the five students from Matepatepa area in Bindura district were canoeing to the school which is across Ruya dam in Chiweshe communal lands.
The deceased have been identified has Adelaide Hwengwa a Form 1 pupil, David Kaviya who is in Form 2 and Rutendo Chikondori who was in Form 4.
Survivors Gelisha Mupandira (15) and Rangarirai Kabunze (16) recounted how the tragedy occurred while relatives of the deceased were at pains to explain their loss.
Mr Felix Murisa, who witnessed the incident and helped rescue the duo, attributed the incident to overloading and strong winds that hit the area in the morning.
The gathered crowd managed to retrieve one of the deceased’s body after it was found floating in the dam.State Media
