Douglas Mahiya |When his brother decided to go and fight for the liberation of his country, Zimbabwe, uncertain whether he would make it back from the war, whether he would ever see him again, my dad decided to name his son after his beloved brother and so I am Douglas Mahiya. At the peak of the war the Rhodesian forces came to our homestead looking for the rebel (‘Comrade Moto’). Hearing my name being called and the white man was convinced that I was the Douglas Mahiya aka Comrade Moto who had mysteriously turned into a child (‘gandanga yachinja kuita mwana mudiki’ he bellowed).
Separated from everyone guns pointed at me the soldiers were ready to fire at the ‘child rebel’. My entire family was helpless, desperate for some kind of divine intervention as the snotty little boy cried for help with absolutely no-one to help. This family was about to lose another son to the revolution for the liberation of the beloved country. What could they do? The state machinery and institutions were fully behind the cause of the Rhodesian forces – to protect the colonial master and continue suppressing the black majority.
Just as the soldiers were about to take it all out on me, pants drenched in fear induced urine, divine intervention came through a ‘traitor’. The black man who was fighting on the side of the oppressor intervened and explained what it meant in our culture – I was saved! This experience entrenched in me a strong resentment for any form of oppression especially spiritual oppression.
The past couple of days have evoked emotions of the experience of more than 36 years ago. Armed men stormed DK’s residence in the high density suburb of Chitungwiza and placed the occupants (my brothers and sister in law with two month old baby under ‘house arrest’ until DK had surrendered himself to the police. When I arrived home in Chitungwiza, it was déjà vu. My father DK in handcuffs, reduced to a 3 year old little boy, family helpless, about 15 men empowered by the state searching for ‘subversive material’.This time around it was not a white man, neither was there a ‘traitor’ to bring the much needed divine intervention to my father.
As he sits in remand prison awaiting bail hearing tomorrow (30 July 2016 at 0900 hours at the Magistrates’ court in Harare – his family is resolute and stands firmly with him. We are not without hope for our God is a God of TRUTH!
Our prayer is simple – “LORD, there is no one besides You to help in the battle between the powerful and those who have no strength; so help us, O LORD our God, for we trust in You, and in Your name have come against this multitude. O LORD, You are our God; let not man prevail against You.” (2 Chronicles 14:11)

These rogue war veterans have said they are “the stockholders of Zanu PF band Zimbabwe” and the rest of us “are stakeholders” meaning we have the vote, if we are lucky, on who rules Zimbabwe and they have the veto!

This has become more than unbearable that people derail from objectivity on every given situation and make sure no constructive discussion is carried out and employ tribal theories. At this time and age one still carries and wields a tribal card in every sphere and forum. if you have nothing to contribute you would not be cursed for remaining silent as it is golden. It is pathetic and stinking for one to disguise himself as shona hater. clearly defining and always wanting your inferior personality to substitute the subject.let me advise all who are and who would be , Zimbabwe is now tribal inseparable as people have diluted in length and breath social and economical .
